Autumn is upon us and we’ve all been beavering away here at ONFife to make sure you have the very best of entertainment to look forward to. The jewel in the crown: Dunfermline’s Carnegie Hall rings in 80 years this October so we’ve put together a programme of events for the whole family – from an exhibit of photographs and images that chart the venue’s storied life so far to a night of cinema which commences with a red carpet screening of The King’s Speech to evoke the spirit of 1937. More on page 28.

Over at Lochgelly we are delighted to welcome the fabulous Birds of Paradise with their poignant story Blanche & Butch while in Comedy East Wemyss boy done good Daniel Sloss performs at Adam Smith Theatre with his latest stand-up show.

We’re otherwise spoiled for highlights this Autumn. Much loved at Adam Smith Theatre, James Yorkston’s Tae Sup Wi’ A Fifer gig series tips up for another round of carefully crafted evenings with Radiohead’s Philip Selway, Kurt Cobain favourites The Vaselines and the cryptically monikered Ol’Crabbit John.

By December ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ which can only mean Panto season! Oh yes it does! Our very magical Tiny Little Christmas Festival brings an array of workshops, family shows and nostalgic films to Carnegie Hall while at Adam Smith Theatre Aladdin swoops into Kirkcaldy on his magic carpet. Still on music, YolanDa Brown brings a sassy sax with a touch of jazz, soul and reggae to Rothes Hall in October while Deacon Blue lynchpin Ricky Ross brings 30 years of quality classic Scottish pop song writing to Carnegie Hall in November.

Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries opened its doors in May with a host of awards and I would encourage you all to visit and explore all it has to offer inclusive of its fabulous Heaven Scent café! Be sure to look for our Sunday Seminars

series and bone up on your local history, or take full advantage of our free Bookbug sessions, which encourage a love of reading for the next generation. And all of this barely scratches the surface of what our theatres, libraries, musuems, mobile services and heritage sites have to offer. We offer lower-priced concession tickets for many of our shows. If you are under 16, a Senior Citizen, student in full time education, registered disabled or unemployed, where you see ‘conc.’ you can book at a reduced price. When collecting concessionary tickets, proof of concession must be provided.

Babe in Arms advanced bookings

For tickets costing more than £5 there is a reservation fee applied online and on the phone but no charge in person at the box office:

In order to give parents and carers peace of mind when making advanced booking for shows, we have introduced a Babe in Arms ticket (for suitable performances) for only £2. This charge enables us to register attendance and support parents and carers when you are in our venues.

Art In Trust Daily until Jan 2018 | FREE Highlights from our wonderful paintings collection celebrate the opening of our fantastic new facility. The exhibition shows the breadth of the collection and there is something for everyone to enjoy, from landscapes and portraits to seascapes and still lifes. On display are works by many well-known artists, including William McTaggart, James McIntosh Patrick, Walter Sickert and L S Lowry. There are also paintings by all four Scottish Colourists – Peploe, Hunter, Fergusson and Cadell – and Glasgow Boy, E A Hornel. As well as enjoying a visual feast, visitors can also find out how the collection was formed and continues to develop today – with recent acquisitions on show, such as Love’s Whispers by William McTaggart and Fent by Alison Watt.

Dunfermline, Scotland’s ancient capital, has long been the subject of ideas and fantasies about how it should be laid out and developed. From philanthropicallyfinanced studies by Andrew Carnegie’s trustees to children-designed models and ambitious plans and a whole lot more in between, this Sunday Seminar looks at how the layout of the town has changed over the last 120 years – for better and for worse. Drawing on rarely seen maps, sketches, photographs and films, local architect Sam Foster will guide you through some incredible ideas and invite you to think about what you’d like to see changed over the next century.

With a style that has been described as “poetic”, Scott Hunter’s work pays particular attention to the sequencing of images as he gently probes themes such as transience, femininity and mortality. Through combining traditional and contemporary printing practices, these delicate works aim to blur the lines between analogue and digital photography.

We all get bumps and bruises along the way in life. Some are inevitable, others perhaps a result of our knee-jerk response to events. Whatever the cause we could all do with reclaiming greater control over how we respond to life’s challenges. In this talk and mindfulness session Martin Stepek shows us how to do just that, by developing our ability to observe what’s really going on in our everyday life, and how to take the sting out of our most troublesome thoughts and emotional reactions to events.

The Stirling Tapestries Craigie Aitchison Sat 18 Nov – Sun 18 Mar 2018 Six large tapestries designed by Craigie Aitchison for a competition to decorate The Chapel Royal in Stirling Castle. The scheme failed but the designs were produced posthumously as a faithful realization of the artist’s intent. Craigie never saw his work woven into these superb tapestries but at Kirkcaldy Galleries you can.

Brothers In Arms And Blood Brothers Scotland’s War Project (1914-1919)

The Glasgow Boys - A Spirit of Rebellion Until 5 Nov | FREE Linked by friendship and a shared desire to rebel against the existing art establishment in late 19th century Scotland, the Glasgow Boys became internationally famous. They enjoyed critical acclaim and commercial success at home and abroad and their determination to break with tradition paved the way for other young Scottish artists.

Mon 6 Nov – Sun 31 Dec FREE The Canadian Expeditionary Force fought throughout World War One but a particular relationship grew up between the soldiers of the Canadian First Nations and the Scots. Many of the First Nations people had adopted Scottish surnames and in 1916 their regiments visited Scotland. This exhibition tells the story of the visit and how those earlier bonds were strengthened and built on to help make Scotland ‘a country fit for heroes’ in the years after the war. Ethics & Aesthetics -Living in a Material World Sat 18 Nov – Sun 18 Mar 2018 Using objects from our ethnographic collections, this exhibition explores the hidden meanings behind everyday objects, such as jewellery, clothing and domestic items. The objects on display span both centuries and continents – from South American pottery and beaded African jewellery, to Chinese porcelain and carved ivory miniatures from Japan. Curated by postgraduate Museum & Galleries Studies students at the University of St Andrews

Associations Tue 3 – Sun 29 Oct FREE An exhibition of new work by ceramic artist Carol Sinclair, presented by Fife Contemporary as part of the Luminate Festival. Inspired by the experience of being a carer for a family member living with dementia, Carol uses gently shifting and changing light and shadow between paper thin layers of porcelain to echo the fragility of how memories are built and lost. As part of the project Carol will be delivering workshops on the theme of The Joy of Clay with Fife Carers’ Centre.

Scotland’s War Project 1914-1919 Tue 7 Nov | 2 - 3:30pm FREE (Please Book)

Dr Yvonne McEwan, Director of Scotland’s War Project (1914-1919), and an authority on the Scottish experience in World War One will be giving a talk on the exhibition Brothers In Arms and Blood Brothers.

The town of St Andrews was a major centre of European pilgrimage in the Middle Ages, with thousands of pilgrims journeying there to see the relics of the apostle St Andrew in the Cathedral. Why not make a trip today to St Andrews Museum to find out about this and other fascinating stories from the past? Our long term display, St Andrews A–Z, includes rare medieval pilgrim badges, 4,000 year-old arrowheads, 19th century banners and even an executioner’s axe! Our first floor gallery hosts temporary exhibitions and you can relax in our ever-popular café in the park.

MAC Fife’s Mobile Museum Exhibition

Methil Heritage Centre Methil Heritage Centre is a community museum lying in the heart of Levenmouth, an area stretching from Leven to the Wemyss villages, and from Kennoway to the shores of the River Forth. Located in a former Post Office, the centre hosts a programme of changing exhibitions and events, as well as a tearoom and a shop. The long term display, Levenmouth Lives, offers a flavour of the rich heritage of the area. Evidence of life in early times can be seen in the Pictish carvings in the Wemyss Caves. In more recent times the village of Buckhaven had the second largest fishing fleet in Scotland and Methil was the most important port in Scotland for shipping coal that came from the many mines in Fife.

Rothes Halls This modern and versatile arts and conference venue hosts a very popular programme of live music, comedy and drama as well as exhibitions, community classes and the local library. Based in the Kingdom Centre with free parking and only 5 minutes walk from the bus station, its flexible seating auditorium seats up to 600 with 1400 standing which enables Fife Cultural Trust to bring large scale productions and major acts to Fife. Our busy café is open early for breakfast and serves delicious meals throughout the day.

This show is packed full of hits such as Calendar Girl, Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, [Is This The Way To] Amarillo, Stupid Cupid and of course Oh! Carol – masterpieces made famous not only by Sedaka but also other well known performers like Connie Francis, Tony Christie, Tom Jones and LaVern Baker.

Join One Night of Queen, as performed by Gary Mullen and The Works in celebrating their 15th anniversary tour. The show captures the lights, sound, pomp and showmanship, paying tribute to, arguably the greatest rock band of all time – QUEEN. The show does go on!

Big-time and small time respectively, they unsuccessfully attempt to work together to charm rich women out of fortunes, only to find that ‘this town ain’t big enough’ for the two of them. They agree to a ‘loser leaves’ bet which brings out the best and worse in the two with many laughs, witty songs and an interesting twist at the end.
