Since it started trading AttFife has been an organisational and financial success and continues to deliver a range of well-supported, quality services to the residents of and visitors to Fife.

We operate four major venues, spread over a radius of 25 miles: > Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy > Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline > Rothes Halls, Glenrothes > Lochgelly Centre, Lochgelly (closed during 2010/11 for refurbishment) ON at Fife delivers an eclectic mix of programming across its venues, within schools and community halls, and in the built and natural environment. We support performance programmes from local arts groups and from visiting professional companies from across the performing arts. We commission work,

support the development of emerging artists and new work, create our own work and mount co-productions and tours.

In 2010/11 ON at Fife realised a number of significant programming and creative partnerships, delivering artistically acclaimed co-productions, national tours, residencies, education projects and digital developments.

The organisation played a significant role in the successful delivery of Celebrating Fife 2010.

Our commitment to delivering effective programming partnerships, our focus on being artist-led and audience-focused, and our solid organisational base – both in terms of venues and of staffing – place us in a strong position to contribute significantly to Fife’s cultural economy over the coming years.

This is a summary of the annual report on the work of Arts and Theatres Trust Fife (AttFife), recently re-branded as ON at Fife.

ON at Fife is Fife’s largest independent arts organisation.

Audiences

Performance Programme

The work of ON at Fife touches people’s lives in many ways. The scope of services we provide across Fife means we reached a diverse range of communities and audiences.

In 2010/11, we engaged with people over 670,000 times, through our shows, events, classes, conferences, and meetings, and through services offered within our buildings and at other locations.

Taking into account all the performances we presented – both in and out of our venues – ON at Fife gave 612 ticketed performances of 310 different productions. We also exhibited 103 films across 153 screenings at the Adam Smith Theatre.

Within our venues... > 123,710 people attended ticketed shows and events > 8,980 attended cinema screenings > 48,411 attended courses and classes > 50,048 attended exhibitions > 77,031 made use of our café bars > 129,123 attended conferences and meetings in our venues > 29,120 made use of 3rd party services in our buildings, such as Rothes Halls Library

Outwith our venues... > 21,623 people attended shows on tour and at locations outside our venues > 6,939 took part in education activities > 25,872 viewed our digital work > 181,213 visited other events wepresented

In 2010/11 we worked with a number of co-producers and artists to make some exceptional arts experiences. These took place not only within our buildings, but on tour, and on location.

Our co-producers included the National Theatre of Scotland; Citizens Theatre TAG; Vox Motus; Puppet Animation Scotland; Promote YT; Children’s Classic Concerts; Clydebuilt Puppets; Starcatchers; Jazz Scotland, and several Fife-based visual artists.

The snapshot on the following pages gives a flavour of some of our co-production highlights of 2010/2011.

99…100 National Theatre of Scotland/ON at Fife co-production A large-scale, nine-month creative arts residency, culminating in a series of live art events and site-specific performances, 99...100 was a Flagship event for Celebrating Fife 2010. The work was designed with and for the people of Fife to celebrate our rich cultural past, present, and future.

The Monster in the Hall Citizens Theatre TAG/ON at Fife co-production A commissioned play for age 14+ by Fife-based playwright David Grieg.

The play premiered in Fife, toured Scotland, and was presented at IETM and Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The creation of the play was informed by a two-year, NHS funded creative arts project, involving 80 participants from Fife Young Carers. “…a tightly drilled ensemble, passionate, playful…, gripping us one minute, cracking us up the next, before melting our hearts” The Guardian

Jock and the Beanstalk Wee Stories/ON at Fife co-production – Digital project A digital project was developed to bring our co-produced Christmas show to those who might otherwise not experience it. We delivered the project to audiences across Scotland – in hospitals, a hospice and schools in remote rural locations.

“We live in an isolated, rural community, and most of my pupils have never been to see a pantomime before.

The Not-So-Fatal Death of Grandpa Fredo Vox Motus/ON at Fife co-production This inventive new piece of theatre was developed and previewed at Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline, before transferring to the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh for the Festival Fringe. Receiving very positive reviews, it then embarked on a nationwide tour.

Starcatchers/ON at Fife We were one of four organisations entrusted to deliver a Scottish Arts Council Inspire Lottery-funded artists residency project in partnership with Imaginate. The residency created performances and arts experiences for children aged 4 years and under. The residency ran in Lochgelly and Carnegie Hall, and also toured to 23 nurseries.

National Festival of Youth Theatre (NFYT) Promote YT/ON at Fife co-production For the first time since its creation six years ago, the NFYT was based in Fife. The event saw the largest and most varied programme in the Festival’s history, engaging more than 350 participants. Groups came from eight regions of Scotland, as well as Norway, England and Ireland. The Festival showcased 16 dynamic stage and site-specific performances in Glenrothes.

Puppet Animation Scotland/ON at Fife – Sea Project A six-month residency project, which saw Fife puppet company Clydebuilt based in two Fife primary schools, delivering in-class educational workshops, as well as CPD for staff. It went on to inform the creation of a new show for Clydebuilt’s repertoire, Diving Belle, based on a sea theme.

Decky Does a Bronco Grid Iron We helped Edinburgh company Grid Iron stage their site-specific show in five park venues in Fife. The presentation of the show brought new audiences out to unusual performance spaces, and challenged expectations of what theatre can be.

Fifespace Gallery During 2010/11, eight visual arts exhibitions were curated by ON at Fife in our new gallery, FifeSpace at Rothes Halls. A range of themes were covered through media including textiles, photography, mixed media, punk art, oils and watercolours and kinetic sculpture. A series of artist-led masterclasses accompanied the exhibitions.

Financial Review We achieved a high level of financial and in-kind support from partners for our activities in 2010/11.

The surplus on unrestricted funds for the year ended 31 March 2011 was £207,102 (2010 deficit of £9,552), before transfers and FRS17 pension adjustments.
