look no further. Our goal is to not just meet, but exceed your expectations. The Hecht Aesthetic Center doesn’t just have clients— we welcome you into our family.

Lavish—What’s hot for 2012? Looking back, we’ve seen a lot of changes at the Hecht Aesthetic Center—a new look, an updated website, and many new clients who have joined our family and are looking their best. I am very excited for the upcoming year, as we continue to provide the best in facial cosmetic surgery and lasers to Whatcom County and beyond. We all strive to look our best, and in today’s world there are many ads offering a ‘quick fix’ for just about anything you can think of. It can be overwhelming trying to decipher all the options that are available—from vitamin pills to experimental lasers and of course the latest in a long line of magic new facelifts that claim to change your life. As we all know, if something sounds too good to be true it usually is not true! Fortunately, there are many treatments available that work, and we have them available right here in Bellingham. Whether you’re looking for a treatment for wrinkles, a younger, firmer neck, or a new nose that is made to fit your face—you need

Some of the most exciting advances in facial plastic surgery in 2012 are new ways to treat lines and wrinkles. Xeomin, which is a relative to Botox, is coming to the market—offering more options to treat active wrinkles like those bothersome ‘elevens’ between the eyebrows. Soon we will also see more variety in dermal fillers—great for deeper lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Both of these injectable options (Botox and fillers) can be performed in a quick office visit with little to no downtime. To complement these quick in-office treatments the Hecht Aesthetic Center also has a new state-of-the-art laser, the Clear + Brilliant laser. This has quickly become one of our most popular treatments for facial skin changes. Imagine younger, tighter skin with less sun damage and pigment changes—with only a few minutes away from work. For patients who are bothered by moderate lines around the mouth, or wrinkles beneath the eyes—this is the treatment that will give long lasting results with minimum recovery.

‘THE EYES HAVE IT...’

‘THE NOSE KNOWS’

This quote has a lot of implications when discussing facial rejuvenation, since we are drawn to people’s eyes. They are often the first thing we notice when we meet someone new or see an old friend. Blepharoplasty (another terms for eyelid surgery) is therefore one of the most powerful surgical procedures we perform. Utilizing a combination of techniques and state-of-the-art technology, eyelid surgery helps bring out the youth in many of our patients by highlighting their eyes. So it certainly is the truth when we say ‘the eyes have it’ here at the Hecht Aesthetic Center!

Many of my younger patients have wonderful facial volume and big beautiful eyes, but all people notice is their nose. Whether it is due to asymmetry, a bulbous tip, or a bump along the bridge of the nose, rhinoplasty (nasal reshaping surgery) can be a life changing procedure. Every nose is different, however, and each requires a custom designed technique or combination of procedures, often addressing breathing concerns with septoplasty (surgery to fix a deviated septum). As a fully trained and board certified head and neck surgeon, as well as a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, I am uniquely qualified to perform both the cosmetic and functional procedures necessary to reshape the nose. I recently had a patient who was so happy after nasal surgery she kept repeating ‘I can breathe! I can breathe’ while her mom was saying—‘but look- your hump is gone, too!’

‘TURN UP THE VOLUME!’ Revolumization of the face is the newest trend in facial cosmetics. Many of my clients have heard of, or seen advertisements for, some of the facial fillers on the market today—Juvederm, Perlane, Sculptra, Radiesse, Artefill... the list goes on and on. Why are these the new rage? Volume! As the aging process occurs, the face loses volume in many areas... and, like a deflated balloon, wrinkles appear. While this may seem unfair, it is unfortunately a fact of life. Fortunately, we have the full spectrum of options available for facial revolumization. While these cannot replace face or brow lifting for certain aging changes, fillers can help accent beautiful features of the face while minimizing lines and wrinkles.

Overall we have an exciting Summer ahead of us at the Hecht Aesthetic Center. I thank all of my wonderful patients, as well as my hardworking, caring staff. Together we will continue to achieve outstanding results—one face at a time.

Get Moving

BY HAYLEY WAKEFIELD

As every adult knows, normal physical fitness leads to longer, healthier more enjoyable lives, particular in our later years. However, often it is difficult to find both the time and motivation, to commit to a regular schedule of physical activity. The aging process frequently leads to pain and discomfort, and as a result, achy joints, muscle soreness, and a lower tolerance for extended workouts can sometimes prompt those with the impetus to get in shape, to discontinue their fitness plan, or at least feel defeated by their own bodies.

100 years ago, Americans did not agonize over washboard abs or perfect biceps and triceps. Instead, most of the population engaged in regular physical activity, as most jobs required a certain level of strength and movement to be effective. The human body ultimately served as a necessary

set of power tools, where a gym membership and a pair of spandex were never part of the conversation. Try to imagine a lumberjack making the New’s Year’s resolution to start using his elliptical machine more. However, one can only imagine how these folks would perceive modern-day Americans struggle to stay healthy and fit. The Nordic Track would probably be a term for a chilly walk to work. “I used to walk five miles to work and back home, each day when I lived on Capitol Hill,” says Leslie Welch, who retired six years ago from a secretarial position at an accounting firm in Seattle. She went on to say that although she began taking the bus to work later in her career, she made it a point to continue walking at least three times a week, and is still walking despite that she is no longer working. Welch is a wonderful example of an older adult who was conditioned early on to stay loyal to the fundamentals of living a health lifestyle later in life. She also maintains a healthy diet, incorporating fruits, vegetables, and regular massages as part of her anti-aging plan. On the other hand, making regular healthy choices can be

a challenge in today’s world, as stress, long workdays, and modern comforts serve to dissuade efforts to stay fit. Sedentary lifestyles have become too often the norm, where physical inactivity can lead to diabetes, heart problems, and poor self-esteem. According to a study at the University of Washington, adults need at least 30 minutes of regular physical activity to stay healthy and lessen the impact of the aging process. The good news however, is that there are more options than ever before to make a healthy lifestyle possible. The Pacific Northwest offers a plethora of fun and exciting ways to make fitness an affordable and central part of any adults way of life. —contined on next page

M i n d/Body/Wellness —contined from previous page In Whatcom County, our landscape boasts some of the best natural resources for adults to get moving. Places for hiking, biking and running are in abundance, as there are over 50 miles of recreational trails to enjoy from Blaine to Chukanut Ridge. Hiking and biking are just the beginning. If sore joints are deterring regular activity, and donning your sea legs seems more like your cup of tea, the Puget Sound is right in our backyard, with delightful options for canoeing or kayaking.

Once you have decided the kind of activity you want to get into, the next step is to discuss with your doctor, the right way to go about it. He or she can tell you what your body is suited for and at what level you should approach your physical goals. This is particularly important, if you have led a sedentary lifestyle up to this point. If you feel you are also tackling this goal alone, but would prefer to do it with a buddy, talk to your friends with like interests that will provide support and help you stay committed to your new healthy attitude.

“The most important goal is to keep with an activity you enjoy...”

Finally, don’t become discouraged if you get off track. It is not the end of the world if you can’t make it to the gym once in awhile, or you feel overwhelmed by other commitments. Trust me, Arnold Schwarzenegger most likely skipped a few workouts en route to a successful bodybuilding career. The most important goal is keep with an activity you enjoy, be kind to yourself, and get movin’! n

Skin Tips

BY AMY CLASSEN

Q

How often should I have a facial treatment? As the seasons change, our skin changes. Sometimes our skin feels dry and flaky, and other times of the year we may feel a little oilier. The best plan of action for individuals who are not experiencing a skin disease or condition is to have a treatment once per season. For those who are treating a condition such as acne, rosacea, or hyperpigmentation, you may need to come in more often to help keep your skin condition under control. Your skin will benefit from a series of facial treatments every 2 to 4 weeks or 6 to 8 weeks for maintenance. Every individual is different and time in between treatments can be recommended at a consultation.

How do I keep my clinical results at home? Although we strive to ensure each client receives the best clinical treatment for their skin care goals, the effectiveness of each treatment can be extended by maintaining a treatment regimen at home. I work with each client to create an optimum regimen for individual needs and history. We have a wide array of products that I can recommend for home use that are easy to understand and use.

What is the difference between a spa facial and a facial treatment at Hecht Aesthetic Center?

What are the most effective skin care ingredients?

I’m going on vacation and would like to have a tan. Is it ok to go to a tanning booth two or more times to get a base tan?

A facial is a treatment for the face, usually consisting of exfoliation, a massage, and the application of cosmetic creams. A treatment at Hecht Aesthetic Center targets specific skin conditions such as rosacea, acne, hyperpigmentation and/or sensitive skin. After a thorough skin analysis, a treatment plan will be established. A treatment can last 45 minutes to an hour and may involve microdermabrasion, a chemical peel or a laser treatment. Clients will find these types of facial treatments to be relaxing, yet quite effective. I provide a complimentary makeup application using Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup at the end of each session. It is my goal to ensure that every one of my clients leave the center looking and feeling beautiful.

Age is the most important factor. If you are 30 and older, begin to look for active ingredients. I recommend PSP (processed skin cell proteins), a natural ingredient obtained directly from cultured skin cells. PSP mimics what your body naturally does for cell renewal and rejuvenation. PSP energizes, nourishes and restores aging and sun damaged skin by increasing mitochondrial activity (the energy) of the cell and tricks older cells into behaving more like youthful cells.

A tan is your skin’s way of showing damage. Tanning booths have been rated carsonogenic by the FDA and are not safe for anyone’s skin. If you want a warm glow for your Hawaiian vacation, I recommend Jane Iredale tanning solution or getting a spray tan. When on vacation, remember to wear sunscreen and your favorite hat!

Summer Spaces

BY MICHELE SEABURG

Winter’s icy grip has finally given way to summer and not a moment too soon. Record-breaking snow and rain storms resulted in some serious cases of cabin fever here in the Pacific Northwest, creating a strong desire to transform those inner spaces. Leafing through the pages of glossy magazines and watching home shows are inspiring, but where to begin? It’s hard to know whether a couple of walls need to come down or a new throw pillow will suffice to transform your home. Bellingham designer Debi Burton has a trick or two up her sleeve to make decorating magic less daunting and more affordable. Burton, who has been in the business for 29 years, said subtracting rather than adding may be all that’s needed to turn a room from drab to fab. “Sometimes it’s more about taking something away,” Burton said.

Owner of Ormolulu, a Bellingham based design, antique and collectable business, Burton suggests bringing a curator’s eye to a room to get the most impact. Since most people know what they like and buy accordingly, they often have everything they need to create the space of their dreams.

Ho m e D é c o r

Careful selection of accessories, furniture placement and lighting creates energy and space. “You need a better canvas for the wow factor,” Burton said. Bringing a fresh eye to your own home can be difficult, she said and recommends consulting a professional rather than running out and buying the first thing you see. Another way to pare costs while getting professional help comes from local furniture stores. Typically they have design savvy professionals on staff available who will help with everything from finding just the right chair to selecting a new color palette. Terry VanDenberg, a designer for Samuel’s Furniture Store in Ferndale, helps customers realize their vision. Like Burton, he believes a little professional help can go a long way. “It can save you a lot of time and headache,” VanDendberg said. Small changes like paint, new throw pillows and artwork can make a big impact, according to VanDenberg. For those wanting more dramatic changes he recommends, “Start with a good base piece and go from there.”

Following the latest home decorating trends can be pricey. Right now a fusion of European elegance meets rustic farm and anything metal is the rage. Burton recommends combing through magazines and tearing out the pages of the rooms that best suit your taste, but eased concern over making the perfect choice. “I don’t think there is an identifiable trend anymore, because there are so many options for people,” Burton said. “It’s about your environment and how you feel,” she added. —contined on next page

“It’s not about collecting, it’s about design.”

—contined from previous page Similar to Burton’s philosophy, VanDenBerg said it’s possible to get the latest look without breaking the bank if you have a solid base of pieces you like that will work with transitional furniture and accessories. He emphasized that customers should not shy away from making their desires known.

“One thing that people don’t realize—if you don’t see what you like when you’re in the store is that we probably have it available to us.” Personalizing your home with found and family objects is another way to get a unique look. But be careful to avoid going overboard with too many pink pig cookie jars, vases or

She underscored her earlier point saying that a designer’s time is worth helping you see your home with “new eyes.” Above all, Burton recommends not taking decorating too seriously. A sense of humor and “whimsy” is the key to making a house a home. n

Supporting the Gluten-Free Dinner Host

BY JOLENE HANSON

“Do you even know what gluten is?” my friend Adrienne asked an insensitive dinner guest who had just claimed gluten-free was the latest fad diet. “Wheat?” he replied meekly, knowing he had a few seconds left to live. A young Italian woman, who has had to find gluten-free replacements for her traditional pasta favorites, is not a person to mess with. What the unfortunate dinner guest didn’t know is that gluten is not wheat.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, but it’s also found in barley, rye, and many other unexpected sources. For example, gluten can be added to meat products, soy sauce, and salad dressing. This can make finding acceptable side dishes to bring to dinner parties confusing.

How does a dinner guest best support a gluten intolerant host? First, the most important thing to understand is that gluten-free is not a fad diet. People who have Celiac disease or other gluten sensitivities will actually become ill if they ingest it. Second, do a little research. There are many online resources with glutenfree products, recipes, and information

such as www.celiac.com. Most local grocers also carry a variety of delicious gluten-free alternatives; just be sure to check the labels. Adrienne has kindly donated a glutenfree, dairy-free lasagna recipe, for those interested in trying an Italian recipe without the added allergens. n

“The most important thing to understand is that gluten-free is not a

QUICK LASAGNA Adapted from Bette Hagman’s The Gluten-Free Gourmet Cooks Comfort Foods, 2004

INGREDIENTS: 10 oz Gluten Free uncooked lasagna noodles 8 oz Italian sausage, browned and chopped into small bits 8 oz of Tofutti cream cheese 1 box of extra firm tofu 1 egg 1/2 bag fresh baby spinach chopped, steamed and pressed or 1/2 box of frozen spinach thawed and drained 1 28 oz jar of spaghetti sauce 1 tsp salt 3/4 tsp oregano 1/8 tsp black pepper 1 cup water

fad diet.”

Directions: Brown sausage in skillet, drain and let cool. Chop fresh spinach place in covered dish and microwave for 5 minutes. Using paper towels, carefully press liquid from steamed spinach and set aside. Whip cream cheese and crumble roughly 3/4 of the box of tofu (when it looks like ricotta texture it’s done). Preheat oven to 350º. Spray a 9 x 13 pan with vegetable oil spray. In large mixing bowl, combine sausage, spinach, “ricotta” mixture, egg and seasonings. Begin layering 3/4 cup of sauce, one-third of lasagna noodles, half of filling from mixing bowl. Repeat the layers. Top with remaining noodles and sauce. Pour water around edges. Bake for 1 3/4 hours or until bubbly. Let stand for 15 minutes before serving. Note from Adrienne: This recipe has been adapted from the original recipe from Betty Hagman. Though the original version is delicious, I believe that in order to make a recipe a “keeper” it’s important to experiment and make it your own. If cooking for those who tolerate dairy, use Ricotta instead of tofu substitute and sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese and/ or parmesan on top prior to baking.

Dinner and a Movie

BY MARISA PAPETTI

After many long years of grant writing, campaigning for funds, and working with the City of Bellingham, the Pickford Film Center opened its doors on Bay Street just over a year ago.

Since then, they have had over 14,000 patrons and added wine & beer to the list of comforts in the 21 and over theater. With two state of the art theaters located in the heart of Downtown Bellingham’s new art district, the Pickford is a hit. “I find I am always inspired by the eclectic, enlightened films, the energy of the staff and the provocative nature of independent media,” says Analeise, a volunteer at PFC.
