Star Trek inspired millions of people to become scientists, teachers, astronauts and more. Most importantly, it had a vision that gave people hope and invited them to become their best selves. A GALAXY OF DIVERSE CHARACTERS Space Command prides itself on presenting a spectrum of characters that reflects the real world, in terms of race, religion, nationality and sexual orientation. This extends to our casting choices, as well.
Doug Jones plays Dor Neven – To science fiction fans, Doug Jones needs no introduction.
Most recently seen as the Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water and Saru in Star Trek Discovery, Doug has played everything from The Silver Surfer and Hellboy’s Abe Sapien to the Faun in Pan’s Labyrinth. But in Space Command, we actually get to see his real face! Doug plays Dor Neven, first in a line of Synthetic Humans created by Greg Mazzey, brilliant inventor and CEO of the Mazzey/Patillo Corporation. When we first meet him, Dor is at his lowest point, working as a laborer at the Ceres Mining Facility in the Asteroid Belt. But Dor has ambitions far beyond that… which includes leading his kind out of bondage.
Bill Mumy plays Greg Mazzey – Bill began his amazing career starring in The Twilight Zone and Lost in Space (“Danger, Will Robinson!”) and distinguished himself as Lennier on Babylon 5. Mumy and Marc Zicree have known each other since the latter was seven years old, and they’ve worked together on Marc’s landmark book The Twilight Zone Companion, Babylon 5 and now Space Command. As Greg Mazzey, Mumy is much like the Steve Jobs of the future… only instead of inventing the iPhone, he creates a race of Synthetic humans!
Mira Furlan plays Vonn Odara – A movie star in the former Yugoslavia, Mira relocated to
America, where she gained fame as Delenn on Babylon 5 (where she first worked with Marc Zicree) and Danielle in Lost. In Space Command, Mira portrays Dr. Vonn Odara, a renowned xeno-archaeologist who discovers the first evidence of an ancient alien race. Vonn has a grown daughter Jelena and is married to Lynn Talmadge Odara, formerly a medical doctor in Space Command. Vonn also has a secret – she’s been genetically altered, thanks to an experimental procedure that saved her life. In time, that alteration will help tip the balance when a terrible fate befalls her.
Robert Picardo plays Yusef Sekander – Robert has had an incredible career of memorable roles in The Howling, Total Recall, Star Trek Voyager, Stargate Atlantis, The Orville, Legend, China Beach and The Wonder Years. In Space Command, he plays Yusef Sekander, a mining foreman at Mazzey/Patillo’s Ceres Mining Facility in the Asteroid Belt, where he oversees a team of Synthetic miners, including Dor Neven. Yusef saves Dor’s life and befriends him, which launches them both on an adventure that spans the solar system and the galaxy beyond. Yusef is a practicing Muslim and a widower, raising a young son who’s at a boarding school on Mars. Christina Moses plays The Prophet – Currently starring in ABC’s A Million Little Things and
previously on The Originals and Containment, Christina first found fame playing Sulu’s daughter Alana opposite George Takei in Star Trek New Voyages “World Enough and Time,” which Marc Zicree co-wrote, directed and executive produced, and which won the TV Guide Award and was nominated for the Hugo and Nebula Awards, science fiction’s top two prizes. She graces Space Command as the secretive Prophet, founder of the Children of Job, a spiritual community with acolytes throughout the solar system. Their “Mecca” is the Iron City on Mercury, where her followers mine iron ore to ship to the outer planets. The Prophet escorts a group of religious pilgrims through space to the Iron City, only to disappear… a harrowing journey that will test her faith to its very limits.
Ethan McDowell plays Captain Jack Kemmer – From Wyoming and winner of the Space
Command Worldwide Talent Search, Ethan beat out 1,200 other actors to win the lead role of Captain Jack Kemmer, commander of the Space Command patrol ship Paladin. In the tradition of such great actors as Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart and Gary Cooper, Ethan exudes a natural decency, honesty, bravery and honor. And he’s not hard on the eyes, either.

Michael Harney plays Anson Kemmer – A phenomenal actor famed for such
shows as Star Trek – The Next Generation, Deadwood, Orange is the New Black and now A Star is Born and the forthcoming Project Blue Book, Mike plays Anson Kemmer, Jack’s father (and named after legendary science fiction author Robert Anson Heinlein). Formerly in the United States Air Force and then the United Planets Space Command, thirty years earlier Anson joined Anoka Chandimol’s Sanity at Last movement and led an international flotilla of spaceships to snare an ice comet and tether it to Earth, reversing the effects of Global Warming. A true hero and a hard man to live with.
Soraya Dean plays Anoka Chandimol – Soraya Dean is a real-life Peace Activist from Sri Lanka (where science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke lived for many years). In Space Command, she plays Anoka Chandimol-Kemmer, Jack Kemmer’s mother and founder of the worldwide Sanity at Last movement that reverses Global Warming and wins her the Nobel Peace Prize.
Sara Maraffino plays Captain Lora Essex – From New York and winner of the
Space Command Worldwide Talent Search, Sara colored outside the lines by being the only female to send in an audition for the role of Captain Jack Kemmer. This so impressed Marc Zicree that he created the lead role of Captain Lora Essex specifically for Ms. Maraffino. Captain Essex commands the Templar, sister ship of the Paladin. In time, she and Jack get married and give birth to their son Ed, who one day will follow in his parents’ tradition and be a Space Command captain.
Faran Tahir plays Kasain the Conqueror – From Pakistan and London, Faran Tahir
has played a wide variety of roles, including the Federation Captain who gets skewered by the Romulan at the beginning of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek. As Space Command’s Kasain the Conqueror, he presents an enigma. In times past, he was Warlord of the Asteroid Belt, and Captain Kemmer blames him for a tragedy that wounded Jack to the core. But now, the fugitive Kasain claims to have turned over a new leaf by joining the Children of Job. He offers Jack a deal: he’ll turn himself in if Kemmer helps him find 300 missing pilgrims and their Prophet, who have vanished somewhere in space. Jack agrees… but very much suspects Kasain’s motives in claiming to be a changed man.
James Hong plays Elder Michael of the Children of Job – With a career spanning more than seventy years, James Hong has been unforgettable in everything from Chinatown to Big Trouble in Little China to Blade Runner (“I just do eyes!”). In Space Command, Hong’s Elder Michael oversees the Iron City on Mercury while the Prophet is away ferrying the pilgrims… and then goes missing. He pleads with Captain Kemmer to see Kasain with fresh eyes, explaining that a core belief of the Children of Job is forgiveness… and a willingness to give anyone a second chance. Bruce Boxleitner plays General Joe Haldeman – Unforgettable as the lead in Tron and as Captain Sheridan on Babylon 5, Bruce Boxleitner’s General Joe Haldeman is named after the award winning author of The Forever War. It turns out both actor and author are fans of each other’s work and thrilled to be linked via Space Command. Additionally, this is the first time Boxleitner has worked with his Babylon 5 co-stars Mira Furlan and Bill Mumy since the end of that show.
Kasturi plays Elena Mazzey – A terrific actress and famed singer and deejay (with over 400,000 Instagram followers), Kasturi is cast as Elena Mazzey, granddaughter of Greg Mazzey and savior and CEO of the Mazzey/Patillo Corporation. A brilliant scientist, Elena is inventor of the faster-than-light drive, which results in her having a galaxy-spanning adventure with Jack Kemmer, Dor Neven… and a mysterious character named Deuce (also played by Robert Picardo).

Bryan McClure plays Lt. Bradbury – Appearing most recently in Atlanta opposite Donald Glover, Bryan hails from Iowa and is also a winner of the Space Command Worldwide Talent Search. His role of Lt. Bradbury is named for Marc Zicree’s dear friend and mentor Ray Bradbury. Lt. Bradbury is pilot of the Paladin under Captain Jack Kemmer. In future episodes, we’ll meet Lt. Bradbury’s enigmatic great-grandson… who will also be played by the versatile Mr. McClure. Katharine McEwan plays Lynne Talmadge-Odara (a.k.a. Odara T’Lynn) – Hailing from England, Katharine has been the lead in many productions and graces Space Command as Lynn Talmadge-Odara beloved wife of Dr. Vonn Odara and her companion on archaeological digs across the solar system. When tragedy befalls them, separating Lynne from Vonn and leaving Lynne’s body and mind shattered, she adopts a shattered version of her name, Odara T’Lynn. Forced after this experience to wear an exoskeleton that allows her to live and to move, she rejoins Space Command and sets off on a mission that will take her to the Core of the Galaxy, determined to find and save Vonn. Victor Manso plays Lt. Luis Borges – A native of Venezuela, Victor plays the charming and inventive Lt. Borges, who attended the Academy with Jack Kemmer then served aboard the Thomas Paine when both he and Jack were young officers. Now Borges is weapons officer of the Paladin under Captain Kemmer. In future episodes, we’ll see a good deal of the dashing Lt. Borges… and hear more of his native language. Nathaniel Freeman plays First Officer Charlie Chilton – Hailing from New York and Broadway, Nathaniel portrays the seasoned First Officer of the Paladin under Jack Kemmer. As he tells Jack, “I keep this bird alive.” He also can get Jack to open up about his feelings when no one else can. Charles Chilton is named after famed science fiction author Charles Chilton, writer of BBC’s 1950s trilogy of Journey Into Space radio series and novels. Aungelique Scott plays Lt. Delany – A talented actor, singer and dancer, Aungelique fills the role of the Paladin’s head navigator during the Great Solar War. The character is named after the renowned author Samuel R. Delany, one of Marc Zicree’s teachers at the Clarion Writers Workshop. Ryan Husk plays Lt. Ted Sturgeon – Fluent in French and a popular actor in many science fiction projects, Ryan portrays Lt. Sturgeon, intelligence officer on the Templar under Captain Essex before transferring to the Paladin under Jack Kemmer. Lt. PHOTOS FROM THE SET GREAT EPISODES AHEAD! Marc Zicree is famed for creating landmark episodes of many shows, including Deep Space Nine’s acclaimed “Far Beyond the Stars” and Star Trek New Voyage’s award-winning “World Enough and Time.” With Space Command, Zicree has designed a series that allows a cornucopia of storylines. Each season is designed to consist of twelve hour-long episodes that tell a season-long -- and series-long -- arc. Within the twelve hours of each season, the episodes are broken up into two-hour storylines with a beginning, middle and end, which join together to form the larger season-long story arc. Zicree has already written the first eight hours of Season One, and outlined hours nine through twelve. The titles of these two-hour stories are “Redemption,” “Forgiveness,” “The Great Solar War,” “Empire,” “Harvester” and “Mousetrap.” Of these, Marc and Elaine Zicree have shot the two-hour pilot (“Redemption”), forty minutes of the second story (“Forgiveness”), with the rest to be shot in January, and the opening sequence of the third (“The Great Solar War”). SPOTLIGHT ON IAIN McCAIG CHARACTER DESIGNER EXTRAORDINAIRE!
One of the legends of Hollywood, Iain has worked on many of the biggest films ever made and created such iconic characters as Star Wars’ Darth Maul, Queen Amidala and Rey, and collaborated with the Marvel Art Department to create the designs for Rocket and Groot for Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as the Hulk for The Avengers and Thanos for Avengers: Infinity War. Beyond this, Iain and Marc Zicree have been pals for over twenty-five years and McCaig has worked as a character designer on all of Zicree’s major projects. These include Zicree’s TV pilot and bestselling trilogy of novels Magic Time, Star Trek New Voyages “World Enough and Time” (designing Barbarian Sulu and his daughter), the science fiction feature Fugitive Space and now Space Command. In fact, McCaig was one of the first people Zicree called to work on the project.

DESIGNERS OF THE PALADIN!
When it came time to reach out to an artist to design our hero ship, the Paladin, there was only one choice – Star Wars illustrator Dave Dorman. We asked for something retro and cool, with a silver and red color scheme. And this is what he came up with:
We then sent the design to VFX whiz Tobias Richter, in Cologne, Germany. Tobias detailed, textured and modeled the Paladin in CG, and what emerged was this wonderful version:

Since then, Tobias and his team at The Light Works Digital Imagery have been designing and rendering dozens of VFX shots for Space Command.
And Dave Dorman has also been designing the wartime iteration of The Paladin‌ as a Flying Wing!

NICOLAS ALANIS THE GREAT SPACESHIP DESIGN CONTEST WINNER!
When Iain McCaig drew two preliminary drawings of the vast alien Y’maa spaceship seen in our Space Command pilot, it gave Marc Zicree an idea: why not have a spaceship contest to design and model the final design of that craft? Teaming with Lightwave (the VFX program used in many TV shows, including The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica and the various Star Trek series), Space Command launched the contest worldwide. We received many wonderful submissions. In the end, there was one entry that towered over all the others – the remarkable design by Nicolas Alanis of Italy.
Zicree hired Nicolas to design and render CG models of the interior of the Y’maa ship and also a mirage of an Y’maa city that appears on Mars. The results were equally unique and breathtaking.

RON COBB GENIUS OF CONCEPT DESIGN!
Marc Zicree first met the amazing Ron Cobb at a party when Marc was sixteen. Cobb was already a famous political cartoonist, whose images often displayed stunning spaceships, robots and aliens. That night, Cobb took Zicree back to his place, where he showed him ten concept paintings he’d just been hired to create to help sell a friend’s movie script. The paintings were unframed, laid out along the baseboard of the living room… and they astonishing. And the paintings did the trick. The movie sold and was ultimately released as Alien. Cobb went on to work as a designer on Alien (designing the Nostromo interiors and exterior, the final design of the Facehugger, and more), Star Wars (the Dewback and the Hammerhead), Aliens (the drop ship, much else) and Back to the Future (the Delorean time machine). Zicree had been friends with Cobb for four decades before the opportunity arose for them to collaborate. When he needed a design for the two Shrike fighters parked in the Paladin’s hold, Zicree reached out to Cobb and his wife Robin Love, now living in Australia. He was amazed and gratified when Cobb granted permission for him to use this terrific design.

Zicree’s VFX Supervisor Joseph J. Lawson and his team then modeled and textured the design in CG. What emerged was everything that Zicree had longed dreamed of.

SPOTLIGHT ON JEFFREY HAYES THE WIZARD OF ART! (AND HE’S A COP, TOO!)
Marc Zicree first met Jeff Hayes when Hayes was set photographer on Star Trek New Voyages “World Enough and Time,” starring George Takei. And Zicree had his socks knocked off when he saw Jeff’s gorgeous poster for “World Enough.” Imagine his surprise when Marc learned that Jeff was also an assistant police chief on the outskirts of Austin, Texas! It turns out that Jeff took up art as a hobby in his off-hours -- and discovered he had an amazing aptitude, proving himself a master working both old school (on paper and canvas) and utilizing the tools of the computer. Jeff was Zicree’s first and only choice to do the posters and book covers for Space Command. To date, Jeff has done spectacular images for the first three two-hour Space Command episodes (“Redemption,”“Forgiveness” and “The Great Solar War”), Star Wars author Maya Bohnhoff’s Space Command novel, and a variety of other illustrations. As retirement from the police department looms, Jeff Hayes will soon be devoting full time to his art career… something no doubt a relief to crooks in Texas – and a thrill to Space Command fans everywhere.

SPOTLIGHT ON CARLOS FERNANDEZ PRODUCTION DESIGNER SUPREME!
Marc Zicree knew from the moment he saw Carlos Fernandez’s work that he’d hire him for Space Command. Not only was he a terrific artist and designer, he’d spent eight years in the Navy as a mechanic on aircraft carriers! As a result, when Carlos designs something for Space Command it really looks like it works! We’ll be seeing much more of Carlos’ designs in Space Command episodes to come. He definitely has the Right Stuff.

SPOTLIGHT ON MIKE PHILPOT COSTUME DESIGNER PAR EXCELLENCE!
When Marc Zicree first met Mike Philpot, he knew they would be great partners in creating the look of the Space Command costumes. After all, Mike had worked on Man of Steel and Spider-Man 3, and had a great feel for science fiction. What emerged were wonderful designs for Dor Neven, Yusef Sekander, Vonn Odara and Greg Mazzey, not to mention a host of Combat Synthetics and Miners, plus Space Command’s General Joe Haldeman. Next up, the exoskeleton that allows Odara T’Lynn to survive after a harrowing ordeal. We can’t wait…

SPOTLIGHT ON DAVID RAIKLEN MUSIC MASTER OF THE STARS! David Raiklen has the perfect pedigree to be a co-producer and composer on Space Command – his Dad was a top scientist on NASA’s Apollo missions. In fact, David was actually present at the launch of Neil Armstrong’s historic trip to the Moon! David has worked for the major studios including Sony, Fox, Disney, Sprint, Mattel, Warner Bros and PBS, plus many independents. David made the New York Film Critics Top Ten with the documentary Heist, the short list for an Academy Award® for Worth, and Mia, A Dancer’s Journey won the Emmy. His projects have starred Elliott Gould, Doug Jones, Blythe Danner, and Martin Sheen. David loves composing for science fiction, and he’s in good company. Some of the greatest composers to work in TV and film have taken on SF and fantasy assignments, notably Bernard Herrmann with The Day the Earth Stood Still and Twilight Zone, Jerry Goldsmith with Planet of the Apes, Alien and Star Trek – The Motion Picture, James Horner with Aliens, Wrath of Khan and Avatar, Bear McCreary with Battlestar Galactica, and Ramin Djawadi with Game of Thrones and Westworld. OUR AESTHETIC IN THE TRADITION OF THE GREATS!
In its writing, directing and acting, Space Command is forward looking while commenting on the modern day – much as Twilight Zone, Star Trek and Ron Moore’s Battlestar Galactica were before it. That said we wanted to tip our hat to the brilliant science fiction writers, artists and actors that have inspired us to create Space Command. These include Ed Kemmer, star of the 1950s TV show Space Patrol, for whom our Captain Jack Kemmer is named. We also named our Space Command officers for some of our favorite science fiction and fantasy writers, including Ray Bradbury, Ursula K. LeGuin, Leigh Brackett, Theodore Sturgeon, Clifford D. Simak, Fritz Leiber, Joe Haldeman, Charles Chilton and Jorge Luis Borges. And visually of course, the science fiction artists of the Fifties were simply amazing and provided illustrations of great power and beauty. These included Ed Emshwiller in Galaxy Magazine and tons of paperback covers… Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson and Wally Wood in E.C. Comics Weird Science, Weird Fantasy and Weird Science-Fantasy… Virgil Finlay in the pulp magazines… Frank Kelly Freas in Astounding and countless book covers… Space Command is honored to continue in their tradition. SPOTLIGHT ON COMIC ISSUE #2 Cover sketches and illustrations by Iain McCaig Iain McCaig is busy at work on the cover for Space Command Comics #2. We wanted to share you with his preliminary sketches for the cover illustration as a bonus.
