FIGJAM Magazine Vol.8
Welcome to FIGJAM Magazine Vol.8 It’s already Vol.8 of FigJam Magazine, but the excitement of the original magazine launch has still not worn off. We are still as thrilled and proud of every new issue as we were of the very first one. We continue to be grateful to everyone who supports our efforts to bring you the best magazine possible every two months. The last few months have been hard, with many people losing their jobs, their financial security, and sometimes sadly their lives to Covid-19. However, as we slowly move out of lockdown, life seems to get easier and better again. This has been a long slog for all of us. Society is moving towards a new normal, which includes facemasks, social distancing and less flexible travel. Although Covid-19 seems to be affecting the older generation the hardest, it is still the responsibility of each and every one of us to look after everyone. Some coutries are stil struggling to contain the outbreak and a second wave may be a reality for all. Let’s hope that a vaccine will become available soon. Until then, it is very important that we all remember that the virus is still with us, and that we all look after ourselves, and each other, for the foreseeable future. Keep your social distancing up, use sanitizers, and masks if required, and keep washing those hands. The creativity of all the artists out there in recent months has had no real outlets, as there were limited possibilities to do any photoshoots. We all succumbed to streaming Netflix and Amazon all day long. Thankfully, the impact of easing lockdowns and restrictions worldwide was also visible in the FIGJAM offices. We have started to receive more editorials again, as photographers are now able to get out and produce some great new work.
almost singlehandedly, Pavan Dhanjal. Her spectacular work and acheivemetns were recognised with a British Empire Medal for Services to Beauty. This issue’s cover photo is shot by the extremely talented Audrey Bieber from France, and the model is Sabrina Martello. We want to include more written features in future issues, , and are currently looking for a fashion editor, as well as a beauty editor to help make FIGJAM even better. If you or anybody you know would like to be part of the FIGJAM team, please do not hesitate to contact us - editor@figjammagazine.com FIGJAM Magazine Vol.9 is expected to be out mid October - early Nov, and once again, we will have no theme for issue submissions. We are enjoying the editorial freedom and creativity that this provides. So keep those great submissions coming! Please also support FIGJAM by following us on our social media channels: Instagram: @figjammagazine FacebookPage: Figjammagazine Pinterest: Figjam magazine FIGJAM YouTube channel. Until next time, we hope you all stay safe, keep being alert, and think about the greater good instead of the individual freedom to do what you want. There are some very cool facemasks out there, and they can make beautiful fashion statements. ~ The Editor
It has once again become harder for us to choose which editorials to feature. FIGJAM Vol.8 contains 144 pages of good quality photography, art and fashion. It is, as usual, a mixed selection from around the world. We welcome the photographers who are having their work shown in FIGJAM for the first time, as well as our ‘regular’ photographers such as Eric Chieze and Seigar. We also have a very interesting article about the woman who has brought traditional Indian henna art into western culture Pavan Dhanjal

Pavan Dhanjal
- the woman who almost singlehandedly made Henna mainstream The art of henna has been practised for over 5000 years, but has only recently become popular amongst people outside of India, Pakistan, Africa and the Middle East. As henna has natural cooling abilities, it is thought that people used Henna to control body temperature. The cooling sensation lasted for as long as the henna stain remained on the skin. However, in more recent times, henna has been worn by Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Liv Tyler, Ellie Goulding, Alicia Dixon and many others. One of the reasons that henna tattoos have become mainstream in the United Kingdom is the effort of British-born Pavan Dhanjal, owner of The Henna Bar.
where a team trained by Pavan directly recreates the art of the master.
Pavan’s determination and her pride in her culture have also resulted in her writing two books about the Art of Henna. Pavan tells us she would like to write more books on the subject, but also thinks that the way people consume information is now more dominated by social media. She puts up the most interesting information via video tutorials on her YouTube channel. The success of henna art, and now its mainstream appeal, have led Pavan to start teaching henna as well. She delivers teaching courses for beginners, as well as advanced students, and henna Pavan was born in East London in 1984. Her interest in the art can be taught via an online course, or in a classroom. Naturally, of henna started from the age of 15. She says: These incredible successes were acknowledged by the Queen “I knew from the beginning that I wanted to pursue henna, when I first herself, in 2017, as Pavan was awarded a British Empire Medal started creating designs I thought it was so fun and beautiful, I thought for her contribution to the beauty industry. That, she says, was I’d like to spend as much time as possible doing this. My inspiration a very proud moment for herself and her family: came from being a British Asian and knowing how important henna is culturally, I wanted to make this beautiful regime available to all, no “I received a British Empire Medal for Services to Beauty two years ago, matter what culture or background.” and the honour still shines through within everything I do to this day. I = am proud of my henna journey so far. From building an entire business The talent of this young lady soon became obvious to everybody, around a tradition that is so dear to me, to spreading the word about henand at the tender age of 25, Pavan entered the Guiness Book of na in the Western world, sharing my passion for body art has helped me Records in 2009, as the henna World Record holder for doing grow my brand and pushed me years ahead in my career” the most henna armbands in an hour. This World Record lasted for 3 years, as, in 2012 she made another attempt to improve her However, Pavan thinks her biggest accomplishment it is making record. Her ultimate goal is that it becomes so popular that it will be as normal as a blowdry and a manicure. The success Pavan has achieved is well deserved. She is a humble and hard working entrepreneur who is always seekIf you want to know more about Pavan’s training courses or ing opportunities to promote her henna art. When FIGJAM accessories, more information is available on her website, www. Magazine asked her about how she wnet from doing henna for pavanonline.com. You can also follow her on instagram, @paan Asian wedding in one of the most famous British TV soaps vanhenna, or follow her YouTube channel, Pavan Henna. (Eastenders), to having her work displayed in the front windows of Harrods, and doing henna on several celebrities, Pavan says: ~ The Editor “When trying to take your business to the next level, networking is key. Don’t underestimate the power of creating the right contacts and engage with everyone who is interested in your business - you don’t know what they might bring your way. The beauty and fashion industries are so small that some of the biggest opportunities often come through word-ofmouth, or are simply created for the right person (hint: that could be you). Surround yourself with people who will happily mention your name in a room full of opportunities, and actively speak about your passion whenever you meet someone new. From big publications to Selfridges and my EastEnders gig, nothing would have come my way if I didn’t persistently speak to people about my business and what I could offer. It’s all about shaking the nerves off and making that phone call or sending that email.” Her persistence paid off, and after her second World Record, she was asked open a pop-up shop in Topshop’s flagship store on Oxford Circus in London. She has since moved The Henna Bar into permanent locations in both Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, 22
