DESIGNER SELECTION.
FJFW has invited EOI from emerging and established designers who have participated in FJFW over the past 15 years. Established designers are defined as those with their own online or physical retail outlet or who are stocked in boutiques or department stores. There will be 3 visiting international designers who will show a collection each at Pacific Resort, Resort Cruise and Resort Luxe.
Selection Panel: FJFW Managing Director Ellen Whippy Knight; Fashion Educator Nicholas Huxley; Brand Strategist & Creative Beck Jobson. Award Winning Designer, Lawyer and Celebrity John Apted.
Innovation (sustainability, creative design /production techniques) is expected. This may include using sustainable fibres, sustainable or low waste production methods, or using a high level of technical skill to create a cohesive collection that is made to last. Selected designers will be notified of application outcomes by 21 February 2022.
DESIGNER SELECTION.
FJFW22 will showcase 36 designers over 3 collections shows.
BUSINESS 1. Collection is designed and Made in Fiji (only applies to Fijian designers) 2. Operating as a business with with information on local or international stockists, and or own online retail; and own social media following. 3. Clarity of defined market space/ client for current collection
Criteria 2.
CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION 1. Demonstrated innovation and quality of current collections concept as shown on storyboard, including inspiration and fabric selections 2. Uniqueness, creative expression of current collection 3. Quality of previous presentations (collections and finish)
Criteria 3.
SUSTAINABILITY* 1. Does the collection use sustainable fabric? 2. Has the designer used eco processes to create a surface print if included? 3. Has the designer attempted to showcase innovation acknowledging some sustainable innovation or endeavour to offset production / business, creativity
All selected designers will receive design development and mentoring from Australian Fashion Educator Nicholas Huxley leading up to FJFW22 as part of a formal Foundations of Design Curriculum at FNU Suva and Nadi. The selection process requires presentation of a detailed storyboard showing your design inspiration and research references, general styling cues, indicative materials/fabrics, intended silhouettes and application of fabrics and materials across the collection. Application to FJFW is by registration and submission of storyboard. These must be received by FJFW by COB 14 February 2022. Please note, late entries will not be considered. Link to Registration Form: www.fijifashionweek.com.fj/designerapplication Designer applications will be reviewed by the FJFW Designer Relations Manager and FJFW Designer Selection Panel who will consider applications based upon three main criteria - business, creativity and innovation, sustainability.
*wiill determine candidates for the Sustainability Award.
SELECTION CRITERIA.
Criteria 1.
THE STORYBOARD.
Your storyboard must include evidence of research and inspiration, fabric samples, the key silhouettes for the collection, any prints/motifs in development including their intended application, a full colour palette, runway style cues, any special finishes or detailing in use. Any combination of hand-drawn or vector illustrations, collage photography, text, finishing and fabrics can be used. Please note we do NOT want mood boards, we want to see your inspiration, your creative process AND your final vision.
THE STORYBOARD.
Your storyboard must be in colour and deliver the selection panel with a cohesive and coherent overview of your new collection. The selection panel must be able to clearly understand your inspiration, your intended construction, and potentially your intended audience and client. We want the full picture.
Explore how you can introduce sustainable fabric / print / production processes into your collection. Globally, consumers are looking to purchase garments that are made ethically and have strong sustainability credentials. Most locally sourced fabrics do not have information on fibre composition so you may need to purchase a sample and test it to see what it is you are working with. Research industry production standards to ensure quality production and provide samples of preferred finishes to your maker so that they understand your expectations. FJFW does not support cultural appropriation in any form across the collection or styling. If you are unsure of what the image, text or motif means, there is a fair chance that you shouldn’t be using it.
THE STORYBOARD.
Consider how your collection is delivering on key criteria - fabric selection, sustainability, innovation, quality production.
There are 4 places in the Pacific Resort Show on Saturday 27 May and two spaces in each of the Resort Cruise and Resort Luxe shows on Friday 27 May and Saturday 28 May respectively. Fees for international designers are FJD1500. If FJFW22 is cancelled or delayed due to COVID-19, FJFW will consult with you on alternate arrangements which may include a pivot to a virtual showcase or refund of fees in full. FJFW can provide hotel recommendations including the option to use the FJFW Official Hotel Partner, Grand Pacific Hotel at discounted rates of FJD199 per room. Please include this on your registration form if needed. Separate fittings will be arranged for international designers prior to or on the day of your showcase.
