They Are On A StarTalk Merry-Go-Round by Ricky Lo

Ai-Ai is the Real MMFF Queen of Box Office Ai-Ai de las Alas is the real holder (bar none!) of Metro Manila Filmfest (MMFF) Box-Office Queen, for the same reasons that you have discussed with me, to wit: The overwhelming success of Star Cinema’s Sisterakas in the recent MMFF just proved one thing: Ai-Ai remains as the MMFF’s Box-Office Queen, having starred in the festival’s top-grossing movies for the past four years. Take this: Ang Tanging Ina Mo 2 in 2009, Ang Tanging Ina Mo 3 (Last na To) in 2010, Enteng ng Ina Mo in 2011 and Sisterakas in 2012 emerged top grossers, and all four movies have one common denominator — Ai-Ai de las Alas. That’s four in a row. Call it luck, but Ai-Ai is a proven lucky charm of all four movies. “I want to thank the people who continue to support me and my movies,” said Ai-Ai, “and more so because the movies I am in finish top grosser in the MMFF. Of course, in Sisterakas I am with, among others, my friendship Kris Aquino and in Enteng ng Ina Mo, kasama ko naman si Bossing Vic (Sotto). What’s important, I am part of the success of all those movies and that’s enough blessing for me.” After Sisterakas’ resounding boxoffice success, Ai-Ai gets top billing with Korean pop Superstar Psy of Gangnam Style fame in a Valentine concert billed

as Ang Tanging Family Valentine at the MOA Arena on Feb. 16, with Wally and Jose as special guests. She is currently shooting a movie for international release, Kung Fu Divas, where she shares stellar billing with Marian Rivera and is also set to renew her contract as a certified Kapamilya. Meanwhile, watch for a bigger, better Pilipinas Got Talent 4, where Ai-Ai is one of the judges, on ABS-CBN primetime very soon. The Year of (Water) Snake is proving lucky to Ai-Ai.

Star-studded Navotas Founding Anniversary The 107th founding anniversary of Navotas City kicked off yesterday with variety show featuring Ate Gay, Ryzza, Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, KZ Tandingan, Erik Santos, Rey Valera, EB Babes and Rocksteddy, capped by fireworks display. Miss Universe first runner-up Janine Tugonon will grace the parade, joining Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco, Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco and city officials. Mayor Tiangco and organizers Evangeline Cruz and Marita Trinidad assured Navotas residents a starry celebration this year.

Gerald Anderson is being tagged as Tuhog King because he’s deemed to have strung together three friends (as chefs do with barbecue) — Kim Chiu, Sarah Geronimo and Maja Salvador. Even if there was “something” between Gerald and Kim, it was more a network gimmick to tickle the imagination of fans (the Kimeralds, right?). Besides, it seemed obvious that Kim was more in love with Gerald than the other way around. Then, the split, with poor Kim crying a river. When they did a movie together, Gerald was reported to be “eyeing” Sarah in an imagined ideal romance nipped in the bud by Sarah’s strict parents who suspected that Gerald has a non-showbiz girlfriend from Cebu. Now come Gerald and Maja who have both admitted that, yes, they were together (with a group daw) on a weekend holiday at the elite Misibis resort in Albay, the same place where Zac Efron spent a few

days when he was here late last year. On The Buzz last Sunday, Gerald admitted being “smitten” (who wouldn’t be?) by Maja and, given the chance, he would court her because, after all, he’s single and so is Maja (who has broken up with Matteo Guidicelli). Meanwhile, Kim felt betrayed because Maja happened to be the friend on whose shoulder she cried every time Kim and Gerald had an LQ (Lovers’ Quarrel). But pray, what’s wrong if Gerald and Maja do get together when they’re not stealing other people’s partners (never mind if 2013 is The Year of the [Water] Snake)? Who benefits from this merrygo-round? Yes, of course, the ABS-CBN soap Ina Kapatid Anak which is topbilled by Kim and Maja. (You deduce your conclusion from that.)

(Postscript: A DPA said that Gerald’s true love is non-showbiz who is an Economics Major? From what school? The DPA was mum.)

Curtain-Raisers: Sad to learn that a popular (and quite controversial) young singer has started selling some of her properties, including a car and a vacation house somewhere near Metro Manila. Has she, like most of us, started to feel the economic pinch? Or is it a sign that her marketability and popularity are going down? If so, she has nobody to blame but herself for letting fame and fortune weigh her down. Or is it fate’s way of knocking her back to her senses (after she kind of “rejected” her Filipino-ness)? The family of a pretty show host must have (even grudgingly?) given its blessing to her May-December romance with a co-host twice her age. You see, every time there’s a family gathering, her father would replay the episode many years ago when she competed

in a kiddie contest on the show she and her beloved are now hosting. As soon as the precious videotape starts rolling, she very quietly slips out of the room, leaving the family members with amused smile on their faces. How can you tell if a “couple” (take note, in quotation marks) is straining hard to make the public believe that whatever it is between them is for real (and not, actually, “for show”)? Well, they resort to PDA (Public Display of Affection) by making sure that they are seen having lunch or dinner at a popular A-list restaurant, holding hands in public, being lovey-dovey when people are looking or posting their pictures on Facebook during their “private moment” on the beach. Name the “culprits”? You can easily spot them, can’t you? @TheFilamInsider

PURISIMA MUM ON ‘AMBUSH’ PHILIPPINE National Police chief Director General Alan LM Purisima yesterday declined to comment on a newspaper report (not in the People’s Journal) claiming a police probe body had found the 13 people killed in a gun battle on January 6 in Atimonan, Quezon died in an ambush and not a shootout. Stressing that only the National Bureau of Investigation has the final say on what really happened during the January 6 shooting incident, Purisima kept mum on the published report that first, a PNP fact-finding body has ruled that the 13 slain men were victims of an ambush and

did not fire their guns contrary to claims by the operating troops and, second, only six of the fatalities were armed. “Actually, I returned the factfinding report that was submitted to me this morning. I gave them up to this day to reformat it,” Gen. Purisima said noting the absence of form in the report. What is definite in the report, he said, is that 13 people riding in two vehicles died. “We can not compete with the NBI which is the sole agency tasked by President Aquino to investigate the incident,” he said. Purisima said that based on the concerned police officers and the findings of the NBI, they will men. He said that by only looking take administrative actions on at the crime scene, there were clearly some violations of Police Operational Procedures which call for administrative actions. inutusan ni Pangulong Aquino na mag-imbestiga dito ay para maiwasan ang anumang duda. Whatever will be the findings of the NBI, we will support it,” the PNP chief said. Purisima said that the policemen involved were subjected to initial interviews by the PNP fact-

finding committee chaired by Chief Superintendent Federico Castro. He also said that in case investigators from the PNP Crime Laboratory Service erred in collecting evidence at the crime scene, they will also be subjected to administration actions. The officer wounded during the incident, Supt. Hansel Marantan, again maintained that there was a shootout between his group and the 13 victims after he was fired upon by passengers of the first sports utility vehicle they flagged down. Marantan, who sustained gunshot wounds in the left arm and both his legs, and appealed to his detractors including those from the media and the government to stop pre-judging him and avoid resorting to speculations.

KILL ‘CYBER-DRACULA’ SENATOR Teofisto Guingona yesterday appealed to the Supreme Court to “impale” the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 or Republic Act No. 10175 which he dubbed as cyber-Dracula. He made the appeal during oral argument before the High Tribunal on the various petitions questioning the constitutionality of the anti-cybercrime measure. Guingona argued that the cybercrime law contains “fangs that instill fear in the people’s hearts, threatening to suck the life out of our freedom of speech and expression.” “We ask the highest Court of the land to impale the law of its ghostly provisions with the stake of reason. As cyber-Dracula lies helpless in its sleep, we plead for the final decisive action to banish our anger, anxiety, and fears altogether,” he told justices. “We fear that this law gives the State unlimited powers to invade our lives, intruding into spheres long protected by constitutional rights. We are anxious that it will limit our rights to ventilate matters of public concern and interest, especially matters of importance to us, which involve

transparency, accountability, and people participation,” Guingona said. He added: “We are angry because we have always trusted that laws are for the good of persons and society. The Cybercrime Prevention Act is a law that threatens and assaults our fundamental Constitutional right to speak, our right against unreasonable searches and seizures, our right against double jeopardy, and our right to be accorded equal protection of the laws.” Meanwhile, Sen.Edgardo Angara, the primary author of the measure, welcomes any changes to the Cybercrime Act. “Cyberspace, and the Internet in general is an entirely new field especially in

law. This is unplowed ground for all of us legislators. Any attempt at examining the regulations written in the law are welcome because they expand knowledge and awareness in people.” he said. Angara filed Senate Bill 3315 filed last October amending some provisions of the Cybercrime Law. However, the senator said that he would await the decision of the courts before setting a public hearing in the Senate to discuss the proposed changes. “The amendatory bill repeals the higher penalties for online crime, puts in the requirement of a court order for the takedown of suspected websites, and strengthens the exclusionary rule providing that seizure of evidence should adhere strictly to lawful procedures,” he said. “The Supreme Court would have the final say on the matter of the TRO (temporary restraining order). I am still optimistic, though, that the SC would uphold the measure as a whole provided that we change the problematic provisions. I am confident that they will see that this law is truly necessary to protect the millions of legitimate Internet users in our country,” said Angara. @TheFilamInsider

Nadine Breaks Up with BF Who Has No Plans to Marry Her NADINE Samonte, who just visited her dad in Germany with her sister, reveals that she has called it quits with her Chinese boyfriend of seven years. “Nag-break na kami noon at may ibang nanligaw sa’kin (Leandro Munoz who was her leading man in “The Sisters”), pero nagkabalikan kami, but this time, it’s for good,” she says. The rumor is that her BF was often seen in clubs, bars and casinos so she chose to end the relationship. “More than that, I saw na parang walang pupuntahang seryosohan ang relationship namin. Parang wala siyang planong mag-propose ng marriage. E, ako gusto ko mag-asawa while I’m still quite young so I can start my own family and have kids. Bumabalik nga siya, pero ayoko na talaga.” Why? Is she envious of her Starstruck batchmates Jennylyn Mercado, Katrina Halili and Yasmien Kurdi who are now all young moms? “Hindi naman sa naiinggit ako. Gusto ko lang ma-enjoy having my own family while I’m still young kasi.” Nadine is one of the two leading ladies of Derek Ramsay in “Kidlat” that’s now rating very well in NUTAM ratings.

“Kami ang magkababata rito at magkaribal sila sa’kin ni Baron Geisler. The other leading lady is Ritz Azul. Something will happen to my character later na hindi ko puwedeng i-reveal. But dahil dito, magiging magkalaban kami ni Derek as Voltaire, who becomes Kidlat.”

SOPHIE DISCOVERS VIN’S MOODY SIDE

WHAT can Sophie Albert say about working with Nora Aunor in “Never Say Goodbye”? “Grabeng pressure kasi alam naman natin kung gaano siya kagaling, pati si Cesar Montano who plays my father,” she says. “Talagang pinagbubutihan ko kapag kaeksena ko sila kasi nakakahiya kapag nagkamali ako. Pero in fairness to them, they are so kind. Never nilang pinaramdam sa’min ni Vin Abrenica na

mga baguhan lang kami. Ang babait nila, lalo na si Tita Nora. May eksenang hindi ako makaiyak sa harap ng kamera kahit pilitin ko. Lumapit siya sa’kin at kinausap ako. She said kaya mo ‘yan. She motivated and helped me hanggang sa makaiyak ako. And after I did the scene, pinuri pa niya ako. Good job daw. Very supportive.” She’s thankful to TV5 for giving her this big break. “Tinupad nila ‘yung pangako nilang bibigyan nila ng magandang project kaming winners sa Artista Academy. Actually, hindi lang kami ni Vin kasi kasama rin namin dito ang ibang finalists like Benjo Ocampo, Brent Manzano, Chris Leonardo at si Malak Shidifat na ka-love triangle ko dito with Vin.” So is she and Vin now closer with each other? “Siyempre, lagi kaming magkasama sa set at sa eksena, e .” What has she discovered about him that she didn’t know before? “Moody pala siya. Kapag natutulog siya sa set, mahirap siyang gisingin kapag take na. Sobrang nagiging masungit siya.”

Richard Shows Butt, Admits Commitment to Sarah RICHARD Gutierrez was very hesitant to answer when asked if he did butt exposure in “Seduction.”It was his director, Peque Gallaga, who answered for him. “Yes, he shows his butt in the movie,” says Peque. “But more than that daring scene, I think mas mapapansin ang husay ng acting ni Richard dito as a man torn between two women. Also, mas mapansin sana ang ganda ng story which is very contemporary in flavor and treatment.” Richard is told by Ethel Ramos that his mom Annabelle Rama used to do sexy movies before without any hesitation. Has he seen any of her mom’s daring flicks? “No. And thank God for that,” he says. “I have no intention of watching any of them. As for me, hindi kasi ako sanay, I’m not really comfortable to bare before the camera. But I’d do anything sa ikagaganda n g ‘Seduction’, which came at a time na I’m more ready to

more mature scenes. I really prepared for this film. Before, yung projects ko didn’t require much preparation, but for this, the role is serious and my scenes are so intense kaya pinaghandaan ko talaga.” Has he experienced being seduced? “Oh yes, at may mga nagtagumpay dahil nagpa-seduce naman ako,” he laughs. “And na-experience ko rin namang manseduce. When it comes to such things kasi, marupok ako, madali akong bumigay. Noon ha, pero ngayon, hindi na. I ’ m committed to Sarah Lahbati.”

Glaiza Denies Aborted Love Affair with Dennis

ONE reason why “Temptation of Wife” clicks with viewers is the fact that Glaiza de Castro is so effective as the villainous Heidi. We know she didn’t want to play kontrabida again after she did lead roles in “Grazilda” and “Biritera” but Glaiza made the right decision in accepting the Heidi role as it’s really so “markado” and she can show her versatility as an actress who can do both lead and villain roles. To think that the role was originally offered to Alessandra de Rossi, who

turned it down. This is definitely a better role than the role now played by Alex as Christopher de Leon’s mistress in “Pahiram ng Sandali.” Alex’s loss is definitely Glaiza’s gain. “I admit I really had second thoughts about my role but then, I realized okay lang kasi Marian Rivera naman ang susuportahan ko,” says Glaiza. “Now, I’m thoroughly enjoying my role as Heidi and I’m so flattered when people see me in public and reprimand me for being so mean to Angeline, Marian’s character. Inaaway nila talaga ako. It only means I’m doing my role well. But now na bumalik na si Angeline as the avenging Chantal, matutuwa na ang viewers kasi mag-uumpisa na ang paghihiganti niya sa’kin at kay Dennis Trillo as Marcel.” How about the rumor that she’s the one who replaced Bianca King in Dennis’ heart? “Natatawa nga ako, nagkadevelopan daw kami ni Dennis sa show. It’s not true. Kung mangyayari yan, dapat noon pa sa ‘Biritera’ where we both played lead roles.”

MMFF Power Players’ Views Clash So much has been said about boxoffice success vs award-winning films in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). Is it rare for entries to have the best of both worlds? The audience is drawn to movies that it thinks it deserves. Or does it know any better? I asked some of the MMFF power players their sentiments about the annual Pinoy Christmas film extravaganza. Amid all the controversy, may they all learn to coexist. Après tout, the MMFF serves as a yearend adrenaline shot to resuscitate the movie industry. Hopefully, it won’t eventually turn into a “filmPEST.” Brillante Mendoza (Director, “Thy Womb”): I would like to share an analogy between the MMFF and a feast. You invite the guests to partake of food at the table. There are certain foods that the guests would want to taste first, and there are those that they want to save for last. You do not take away the food until the guests have left. This year’s MMFF showed who are the stakeholders involved in the film industry. It also showed us who are responsible for the rotten system plaguing the industry. Let the festival be an opportunity for the moviegoing public to feast on the best. Let them choose and enjoy the best of the feast.

Roselle Monteverde (Producer, “Shake Rattle and Roll XIV”): For the next film festival, I suggest lesser entries, like six entries, one entry per genre, to give the producers equal sharing in cinemas including the provinces. Let’s put back one entry per film outfit to give chances for other producers to join. We selfimpose this in Regal to give way to other producers. Actors are only allowed to be cast in one entry, be it lead or supporting roles. The MMFF should not penalize film outfits for the shortcomings of actors in attending its promotional activities. Certain things are beyond the producer’s control, especially if the promotional activity was not scheduled at least two months in advance. The MMFF should work harmoniously with producers because we invest so much time, money and effort in movies shown during the festival.

Anne Curtis:

Career, Love Life in Full Bloom

Name it, Anne Curtis has done it. She has proven her worth as an actress, a concert artist, TV host and product endorser. Her face has launched a thousand products and shows. Her love life is also in full bloom. She can rest on her laurels if she wants to, but Anne still has so much fire in her belly. She’s set to appear in ABS-CBN’s new teleserye, “Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw” (premieres Jan. 21, 9 p.m.), where she will be in an unusual love triangle with Kris Aquino and Robin Padilla. We had a chat with Anne recently: What’s it like working with Kris and Binoe? Kris and I have been close since we worked together in “Hiram.” I love listening to her stories. We are so comfy with each other. But I was wary about our scenes where I had to slap her. Parang ’di ko kaya, so I asked her permission muna … At first, I was awkward around Binoe. I had worked with him in “Tulak ng Bibig” but I had a small role there. Now he’s my leading man. When he told me that we should make our love scenes as realistic as possible, na-relax na ako. Mas todo ako dito in terms of my confrontation scenes with Kris, and love scenes with Binoe. 2012 was good to you. How do you intend to outdo yourself this year? It wasn’t a quick rise to fame for me. I’m so thankful that my patience has paid off. Tanggap lang ako nang tanggap ng roles dati to hone my skills. I don’t like planning; I just go with the flow. I’m not pressuring myself to top 2012. Still, I’m claiming that 2013 will be a very good year. Deadma na lang to my detractors and to negative vibes. If a project clicks, that would be cherry on top. If it doesn’t, I’ll just have to strive harder.

If I could do a repeat of my concert, I hope to fill up the Mall of Asia Arena the way I did Smart Araneta. Itutuloy ko ang pagtayo ng bandera ng mga nonsingers like me who love to sing. I’m excited for my movie, “The Gifted,” which is a dark comedy. You have to watch it to find out in what way am I gifted. Do you now have a formula for success? I just keep reinventing myself. I’m lucky that I now have a say in the roles that I play, and in the script. I told Boss Vic (del Rosario, her business manager) that I don’t want to do young-mother roles yet. After the success of “No Other Woman,” it would be too drastic for me to portray a mom. But in (the TV series) “Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw,” my character Ruth has to deal with kids who are not her own. How are things going between you and Erwan (Heusaff)? I’ve never been happier. We’ve been together for three years and we’re going strong. I’m a very supportive girlfriend. I accompany him to his triathlon events. When fans want to have pics taken with me, I tell them, “Sorry I’m here as the girlfriend of Erwan and not as Anne Curtis.” When he trains, we hardly see each other but I understand. I may go into triathlon myself, should my schedule permit. What’s important to him is important to me, too. I love how he cooks healthy meals for me. Like any couple, we fight but not to the point of breaking up. He’s the boyfriend I’ve been with the longest, with no onand-off periods. I guess it comes with maturity. If Erwan asks me to marry him and I feel the time is right, I’ll go for it. But we’re not rushing; we still have many dreams to fulfill.

NEW INCOME & ESTATE TAXES UNDER AMERICAN TAXPAYER RELIEF ACT OF 2013 By Roman P. Mosqueda, B.S., LL.B., LL.M., & S.J.D.

On January 3, 2013, President Obama signed the fiscal cliff bill into law: The American Taxpayer Relief Act (“ATRA”), in his vacation house in Hawaii, using an autopen and averting going over the cliff for good and for bad. Increases In Income Tax And Capital Gains and Dividends Rates: ATRA retains the individual income tax rates for the majority of taxpayers: 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33% and 35%, but adds the new rate of 39.6% for the following income levels of: (1) $225,000 for married taxpayers filing separately; (2) $400,000 for single taxpayers; (3) $425,000 for head of household taxpayers; and (4) $450,000 for married taxpayers jointly filing. In addition, the capital gains and dividend rates remain at 15% in 2013 for taxpayers in the 25%, 28%, 33% and 35% income tax rates, but ATRA adds the new maximum rate of 20% for the aforesaid income levels to which the top 39.6% income tax rate applies. Moreover, effective January 1, 2013, the 3.8% Medicare surtax on net investment income under the Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) applies to the following income levels: (1) $250,000 for married taxpayers filing jointly; (2) $125,000 for married taxpayers filing separately; and (3) $200,000 for all other individual taxpayers. For individual taxpayers, the 3.8% Medicare surtax is based on the lesser of: (1) net investment income, or(2) the amount by which the modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds the threshold amount in the tax year. ATRA begins the personal exemption phase out, as well as the itemized deduction phase out in 2013 at various adjusted gross income thresholds from $250,000 for single taxpayers to $275,000 for head of household taxpayers to $300,000 for married and jointly filing www.FilAmInsider.com taxpayers. 8

Notably, the itemized deduction phase out includes mortgage interest, property taxes, state and local income taxes, and charitable contributions, estimated to result in loss of up to 80% of itemized deductions. Alternative minimum tax (“AMT”) rules are implemented in ATRA, made retroactive to January 1, 2012. Exemptions for 2012 are the sums of $50,600 for individuals and $78,750 for married taxpayers filing jointly, and will be indexed for inflation in the future years. Estate, Gift, And Generation Skipping Transfer Taxes: ATRA makes permanent in 2013 and thereafter the rules governing estate taxes, gift taxes, and generation skipping transfer taxes under the Tax Relief Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010 (TRUIRJCA”), but increased the maximum rate for each of these taxes from 35% to 40%. It also makes permanent the portability of the estate tax exemption between married couples, that is, the ability to use a deceased spouse’s unused exclusion amount. TRUIRJCA unified these taxes and provided for inflation indexing beginning 2012. Consequently, under ATRA, the 2013 exemption for each of the estate, gift, and generation skipping transfer taxes is $5,250,000, $130,000 more than the exemption in 2012, instead of going back to the 2002 exemption of $1,000,000. Derek Wants to Keep New GF Away from the Limelight DEREK Ramsay became one of 2012’s most controversial stars when he decided to leave ABS-CBN and moved to TV5 then he broke up with Angelica Panganiban after being together for six years. How would he describe the start of 2013 for him? “Peaceful naman,” he says at the launch of his new action-fantasy show, “Kidlat.” “I can’t complain. I’m happy with my career, my family, my life. Big hit naman ‘yung last movie kong ‘A Secret Affair’. I’m now currently building my dream house in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, so busy ako supervising that.” Is he happy with the way his career is going on TV5? “Oo naman. ‘Amazing Race Philippines’ got very positive feedback and I enjoyed my work covering the Olympic Games in London. Siyempre, laging may detractors, like those who say hindi naman ako nakita sa London. But it’s meant to be that way. Hindi naman ako nagpunta doon as an artista but we’re there to support our athletes so nasa kanila ang focus, not on me. I guess you really just can’t please everyone. What I appreciate with TV5 is that they really consult me on what I want to do. ‘Yung projects na babagay talaga sa ’kin, like ‘Kidlat’, which is about a superhero and I really want to try playing one.” Is he pleased with the TV movie of “Kidlat” shown yesterday on TV5 and

the pilot episode that starts tonight after the TV5 news, “Aksyon”? “Oh yes, happy ako. Enjoy ako doing it. I’m having so much fun. Our director, Mike Tuviera, is very good and he’s leaving no stone unturned to make

sure the public will find each episode of the show to be exciting and entertaining. I trust him and all the staff very much. We’re confident viewers will be pleased with our show and we have a winner. This is an original Filipino superhero, not a remake or copied from anything. Even the guys who did ‘X-Men’ in Hollywood are very pleased with it so they agreed to design my costume for the show.” How does he find his co-stars: Christopher de Leon as his mentor, Nadine Samonte and Ritz Azul as his leading ladies and Baron Geisler as costar? “It’s a great honor to be working with a distinguished actor like Sir Boyet de Leon. Nadine and Ritz are both great to work with. Si Baron naman, I consider him as my new little brother who I’m helping to guide right now dahil masyado siyang kontrobersyal. He’s really a good actor. Kasama rin namin sina Wendell Ramos, Jay Manalo and Assunta de Rossi. Puro sila magagaling kaya masarap katrabaho.” How about his love life? It’s common knowledge Angelica is now very much into John Lloyd Cruz. As for him, rumors say he’s now going steady with a girl named Alexa. “I’m dating someone but I’d rather not talk about her. It’s better to keep such things private na lang para tahimik at baka ma-jinx pa.”

Sarah to Leave for New York with John Lloyd SARAH Geronimo will soon be leaving with John Lloyd Cruz to shoot scenes of their third movie together, “It Takes a Man and a Woman,” on location in New York. This is the third installment in their love story as the rich Miguel Montenegro and the poor Laida Magtalas that started in “A Very Special Love” and “You Changed My Life,” both box office blockbusters. This will be the last chapter in the trilogy. It opens with the lovers breaking up and John Lloyd falling for another girl, played by Isabelle Daza. Sarah still works in the office of John Lloyd but she’s hurting. The

movie is scheduled to open on March 30, Black Saturday, which means they have more than two months to complete it. But someone told us their director, Cathy Molina Garcia, shoots only one scene a day, so here’s hoping it’d still be completed in time for its playdate. About reports that she’d be paired with Coco Martin after this last flick with John Lloyd, Sarah tells us she has yet to receive formal notice from Star Cinema about this. Right now, she’s still busy with provincial tours and by July, she’ll stage her 10th anniversary concert at SM Arena. She’s also helping out in their family businesses.

PREDICTIONS THAT BOMBED FORTUNE tellers are all over the place once again since it’s the start of the new year. Here are some predictions made by manghuhulas (we won’t name them anymore so they won’t be embarrassed) at the start of 2012 which we collected. It’s up to you to decide if their predictions came true or not.

Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes will walk down the aisle as they’re from Year of the Rat and Year of the Dragon and this is the perfect time for them to marry. Kris Aquino will have a new love life that she could not resist kahit dedmahin niya ito. Angel Locsin will find it hard to balance love and career so she’ll break up with Phil Younghusband. Based on their birthdays, Angelica Panganiban and Derek Ramsay are very compatible as their characters support each other, so their relationship will be stable at lalo pang titibay ang pagmamahalan nila. Heart Evangelista will continue to be loveless this year. Nora Aunor will get back her golden voice and this will be a banner year for her.The new shows of Aga Muhlach and Sharon Cuneta on TV5 will be topraters. This is the year of Sarah Geronimo and Gerald Anderson. Their love affair will prosper. Rhian Ramos will be afraid to fall in love again. To all these predictions, our reaction is: Mwahahaha!Their only prediction that came true is a top comedian will die, but they’ve been predicting that annually since a few years back. It’s only last year that it finally came true. Now, maniniwala pa ba kayo sa mga hula?

Enchong Defends Who Could Sarah Geronimo mean by ‘Womanizer?’ Maja Against Bashers MANILA, Philippines -- Actor Enchong Dee defended his close friend Maja Salavador against bashers and media over photos that circulated in the Internet showing the actress vacationing with actor Gerald Anderson in a high-end resort in Albay. Anderson is the ex-boyfriend of actress Kim Chiu, who stars with Salvador and Dee in the hit primetime series “Ina Kapatid Anak.” While Chiu was quoted as saying that their friendship has been affected by the reports of a possible AndersonSalvador romance, Dee believes it’s not fair to say the two women are fighting over one man and that this will affect the atmosphere at the set. “I think it’s not healthy na sabihin na mayroon silang friction dahil lang, because of, isang tao at I think hindi enough reason ‘yon para pagawayan,” Dee said In an interview on Tuesday during the press conference for their soap. Dee also believes the two actresses will weather this storm because of their long friendship. “’Yung pagkakaibigan nila na naipon, hindi ‘yon basta mawawala dahil langwww.FilAmInsider.com doon. Siguro marami pang 10

pwedeng mangyayari after today,” Dee said. As for social media bashers, Dee’s advice to Salvador is to just ignore. “Siguro hindi naman ‘yon mawawala. They will never be gone, palagi silang nandiyan and they will always have their opinions and, for whatever it is, our lives are not their lives,” he said.

MANILA, Philippines – Sarah Geronimo, who is set to star on her third movie with John Lloyd Cruz “It Takes A Man And A Woman,” has taken a swipe at a certain “womanizer.” as observed on her Sunday show “Sarah G Live.” On her live show, “Sarah G Live,” the Pop Princess performed Britney Spears’ “Womanizer,” after which, urged her viewers to not fall in love with womanizers. The singer-actress’ co-host Robi Domingo was caught off guard when asked point blank by Sarah if he is a womanizer. “Hindi ka womanizer, promise ha?” she addressed Robi, who answered he isn’t. When it was Robi’s turn to ask the audience, Sarah exclaimed: “I think alam na nila ‘yon, sorry. Itaas natin ang bandera ng mga babaeng nagmamahal ng totoo at mga babaeng sinasaktan, joke lang... okay, control emotion na.” She apologized for “misbehaving.” “Pasensiya na po at hindi ko po napigilan ang sarili ko, pasensiya na po.” Earlier that day on “The Buzz,” Gerald Anderson, who was linked to Sarah a few months back, admitted his intention to court Maja who, in turn, is the co-star of the actor’s ex-girlfriend, Kim Chiu, on the series “Ina, Kapatid, Anak.” Sarah, who has had her fair share of failed “could-have-been” relationships in the past, couldn’t agree less that she, too, has her regrets when it comes to love. The 24-year-old Viva talent was linked to popular showbiz names (John Lloyd Cruz, Rayver Cruz, Kean Cipriano, and the recent Gerald Anderson) and politician (LRay Villafuerte).

“Ayaw ko namang magpaka-ipokrita na ‘No regrets,’” Sarah said in an interview aired on “Bandila” Tuesday night. Nonetheless, she regards those “regrets” as learnings in life. “May mga pinagsisisihan ka na sana ay ganito, ganyan. Pero ‘yun nga, everything happens for a reason… May mga aspeto na may pinanghihinayangan ka, may aspeto na ‘Ay, hindi ko dapat ito panghinayangan,’” she added. Celebrating her 10 years in showbiz this year, Sarah offers her upcoming film with John Lloyd and a new album to her fans. Sarah, at this point however, still stands by her “no kissing scene” policy in her movies, saying “Hindi naman yun ang papanoorin [kasi] ng mga tao… kung mayroon man, ’yun ’yung storyang mayroon kami, kung ano ’yung na-witness nilang love story ni Miggy (John Lloyd) at Laida (herself).”

The Buzz by Boy Abunda

“Sabi ko, ‘Alam mo, let’s just forget everything sa 2012 and start a new 2013.’ So I think he’s starting anew. He’s doing parang recording a new album,” kuwento ni Jessy. “Kung ‘yun lang ang rason parang it’s not even valid enough to do it to himself,” giit pa ng dalaga.

M a r a m i n g naglalabasang negatibong balita tungkol kay JM De Guzman.

“Ang alam ko may gagawin akong movie din actually, I think dalawa, I’m not sure. Basta I’m looking forward sa pagiging busy, sa lahat and having a positive, talagang positive year,” nakangiting bungad ni Sam.

“Sobrang blessed na ang daming trabaho dito so I want to work while I’m still here pero pabalikbalik. So starting over pa lang doon that’s why back and forth dapat,” pagtatapos ng aktor.

Kim vs Maja:

Gimmick or Real? SOME people are wondering if the petty war between Kim Chiu and Maja Salvador because of Gerald Anderson is just pure gimmick of Star Cinema. Kim suddenly felt uneasy after learning that Maja and Gerald were seen on many occasion together. On ABS-CBN’s “Bandila,” Kim was quite open in sharing that she had heavy feelings about the situation as in the past always shared secrets with her, including what had transpired between her and Gerald. But why then Kim didn’t talk when Gerald was courting Sarah Geronimo? Some say it’s gimmick but with all the quality projects ABS-CBN makes, they don’t need such stories to make up so their stars would be talked about. So considering this, is it for real then?

Sarah Out of the Country:

Guilty or Otherwise? IT’S confirmed: Controversial new actress Sarah Lahbati, who’s embroiled in a controversy with GMA Network and GMA Films president, Annette GozonAbrogar, has flown out of the country. It seems like Sarah has decided to take the easy way out instead of facing the consequences of her actions. Now that GMA Network and Atty. Abrogar have filed their respective cases against Sarah, some people say the controversial actress might have realized that she could no longer stand by her earlier allegations. To others, her departure is already tantamount to an admission of guilt on her part. While we still have to wait and see, there are other speculations about her personal status. Some naughty thoughts are saying that what others speculate that she is pregnant is true, or she, or her camp might have other plans in mind. www.facebook.com/filaminsider

2012 A Good Year for Sam, Aiza but not for ‘Enteng’

Sam Pinto and Aiza Seguerra – two of the cast members of “Si Agimat, Si Enteng at Ako,” are thankful for the career boost they got in 2012. Sam, an actress and commercial model, though still hopes this New Year will even be better. “Like any other artist, I wish for new shows,” she said. “My career is really my focus now. I’ll be doing a lot of workshops in singing, acting and dancing. I really have to level up.” She noted that her shows “Bubble Gang” and “Party Pilipinas” are rating well. Sam, who has been modelling since she was 10, first became popular when she joined the reality show “Pinoy Big Brother: Double Up” in 2010. She signed up with Viva that same year and has already appeared in various movies and TV shows. She was voted FHM Philippines’ Sexiest Woman in the World in 2011 and 2012. Doing well, too Aiza, Sam’s costar in “Si Agimat,” said 2012 was likewise a good year for her. “I’ve been part of two stage plays, which was a really big experience for me,” the singer-actress began. “I find it weird that I’m visible on TV now (via the drama ‘Please Be Careful With My Heart’) and not so much in the music scene.” Aiza said she was also grateful for the support she got for her 25th anniversary concert, titled “Bente Singko,” at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in September. “I was happy with the fact that all my guests did it for free,” she said. MMFF entry According to unofficial box office results, their film entry, “Si Agimat,” is at presstime the third topgrosser in the ongoing MMFF that runs until January 8. Its lead stars include Vic Sotto, Bong Revilla, and Judy Ann Santos. The fantasy-adventure franchise has consistently been the festival’s top grosser in the past two years. “I’m afraid I’d be blamed if this [movie] does not turn into … [no.1] box-office success,” Judy Ann said. “The pressure is on me since I’m the newest cast member.” In the film, Judy Ann plays Princess Angelina Kalinisan Orteza, a.k.a. AKO, the ruler of Kingdom Diwarata and a protector of the environment. It was a character specially created for her, after Ai-Ai de las Alas begged off from the project to be part of another MMFF entry, “Sisterakas.” “The bosses said they would create a character that’s just for me,” Judy Ann recalled. “As soon as this was clear, I said, ‘Yes.’ Why wouldn’t I? It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with the two greats (Vic and Bong). This might never happen again.” The movie “Enteng ng Ina Mo,” which featured Vic and AiAi was last year’s MMFF top earner. In the 2010 fest, Vic and Bong’s “Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote” was also No. 1 at the box-office. One of Judy Ann’s supporters posted on her fan page: “Don’t blame Judy Ann Santos for not making ‘Si Agimat, Si Enteng Kabisote at Si AKO’ the No. 1 Box Office Hit Movie of MMFF 2012. “Sadyang nagsawa na ang mga movie viewers sa paulit-ulit na parehong konsepto ng movie franchise na ’yan, sa totoo lang [Movie viewers have grown tired of the same, old concept of that movie franchise].”

38th MMFF Awards Night

Highlights and Sidelights by Mario E. Bautista ONCE again, Dingdong Dantes beats Gov. Jeorge ER Estregan as best actor in the Metro Filmfest. Last year, ER was hoping he’d win for “Asiong Salonga” but Dong bested him as the psychotic husband in “Segunda Mano”. This time, ER plays another real life character, Emilio Aguinaldo in “El Presidente”, and Dong bested him anew as the father of a sick boy in “One More Try”. Dingdong was not around when his name was called so it’s Director Ruel Bayani of “One More Try” who claimed the trophy for him, saying he’s on the way to the venue, Meralco Theatre. “Natrapik lang ho sa C5,” says Direk Ruel. Host Kris Aquino later announced he has already arrived and called Dong upstage.

Last year, he was also absent when he won for the first time. Now, well, better late than never. Dong was busy taping “Pahiram ng Sandali” in Tagaytay and he rushed from there to attend the awards night. He thanked almost everyone, including his family, but forgot to mention GF Marian Rivera. “One More Try”, “El Presidente” and “Thy Womb” got the most number of awards. “One More Try” won five trophies: best picture, best screenplay, best actor for Dingdong, best editing for Vito Cajilig and Fernando Poe Jr. Memorial Award for Excellence (FPJ must be turning in his grave.) “El Presidente” also won seven trophies: 2nd best picture, best supporting actor for Cesar Montano, best theme song for Apl de

In the New Wave category, the winners are “The Grave Bandits” for best picture, “Ad Ignorantiam” for Jury Prize, Tyron Acierto as best director for “Grave Bandits”, Liza Dino as best actress in her role as a dancer torn between love and her craft in “In Nomine Matris”, Alan Paule as best actor in his role as the understanding father of a gay son in “Gayak” and most gender sensitive award for “In Nomine Matris”. Staging of Miss Universe 2012 Pageant

The final moments of Miss Universe 2012

INSIDER PRODUCTIONS in VEGA

LIVE at the Miss Universe Pagean INSIDER PRODUCTIONS was on scene as we joined the many media outlets , presenters, judges, and celebrities on the red carpet of the Miss Universe 2012 Pageant. With the countless beauties leading up to this event, INSIDER PRODUCTIONS wanted to capture the pride of the Philippines, Miss Universe candidate Janine Tugonon. Pressure was truly on Janine as Miss Philippines has had a great history in the Miss Universe pageant with a top 5 finish the past two years with Miss Universe 4th Runner Up 2010 – Venus Raj and Miss Universe 3rd Runner Up 2011 – Shamcey Supsup. It was only befitting that INSIDER PRODUCTIONS was there to capture all the moments as Miss Philippines was declared 1st Runner Up and Miss USA, Olivia Culpo, taking the crown. In the Question and Answer portion, Janine answered her question beautifully to the delight of the crowd, which included a huge Filipino-American contingent. Judge

Nigel Barker asked: “As a global ambassador, do you think that speaking English should be a prerequisite to being Miss Universe?” Janine simply answered: “For me, being Miss Universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language. It’s being able to influence and inspire other people. So, whatever language you have, as long as your heart wants to serve and you have a strong mind to show to people, then you can be Miss Universe.” From Facebook and Twitter followers alone, Janine received massive praise as her eminently sensible answer was to the point and very well spoken. Unfortunately, on this evening it was Miss USA Olivia Culpo who took home the crown. Many believe that Miss Philippines deserved the title but it was not meant to be this time around. Nevertheless, Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon was the perfect representation of the beauty, style, poise, and prestige of the Philippines. She joins Venus Raj and Shamcey as the beauties from the homeland and elegance of a true Filipina.

RC allegedly keeps HB on the side, just in case Beleaguered Beau is unavailable.

In public pronouncements, Popular Star and Character Actress keep praising each other—a little bit too much, really. But in a social networking site, CA posted the photo of a billboard of their project with an unflattering caption, alluding to PS’ crass background. In return, PS has been describing CA in subtly disparaging ways in interviews with the press. In so many words, PS refers to CA as a “rich witch.” Tit for tat.

Angelica’s Wish: More Claudine Involved in Downtime for Lloydie Another Controversy?

All that Angelica Panganiban wants for boyfriend John Lloyd Cruz this year is for him to slow down on work. “He’s such a workaholic and pushes himself even when he’s sick,” Angelica said. “I want him to have a balanced life, and have time to spend with his family, or do what he pleases.” Despite Lloydie’s workload, though, the 26-year-old actress said they always find timewww.FilAmInsider.com for each other. “That is, when 20

we don’t have shoots. If we’re lucky, we get to have long dinner breaks,” said Angelica, whose romance with Lloydie reportedly started during a movie shoot in Vietnam last April. Asked before Christmas what she was giving Lloydie, she said finding a gift for someone who had everything wasn’t easy. “I’ll probably give him a credit card!” she said, laughing. “Trying to outdo each other with expensive gifts is passé. The simpler, the better—and more heartfelt.” She said Lloydie was ecstatic about her holiday reunion with her family. “He suggested things to do, restaurants … he could be an events coordinator!” Like comedy. What else had she learned about him? Angelica replied, “I didn’t know that we had similar personalities. When we’re together, it’s as if we’re doing a comedy flick.” One of the lead stars of the Metro Manila Film Festival best picture “One More Try,” Angelica said she never knew there was something missing in her life until Lloydie became part of it. “I still can’t believe this kind of feeling exists,” she said. Even so, she admitted, they have spats like other couples. “It happens usually when he doesn’t reply to my text messages,” she said. “It’s so … high school!”

Very much together at in love na in love sa isa’t isa ang mag-asawa.

WHEN, MANONG? I’ve always maintained that the stories of Fil-Am Manongs, then and now, are worth telling. However, during my past 10 years in America as an immigrant, I found that there are scant few dedicated venues to celebrate the Fil-Am spirit.I am in awe of the existing multi-purpose community halls in isolated pockets of Filpinotown USA, bravely trying to keep Filipino culture and tradition alive—and they do serve their purpose as best as they can. And yet, apart from San Francisco’s awesome warren of a theater called Bindlestiff, there seems to be no other theater dedicated tothe continually evolving journey of FilipinoAmericans. I find this strange in a country with a vaunted population of 4 million Filipino-Americans. And, specifically, having lived and worked with mostly Pinoys in Los Angeles for the last three years, I am inclined to say: “That’s Incredible!” After all, according to Wikipedia, the Greater Los Angeles areais “home to the most (number of) Filipino Americans, with the population numbering around 606, 657”; and, with Los Angeles County alone accounting for over 374, 285 Filipinos, “the most of any single county in the United States.” Can you imagine the enormous energy that can be generated for positive good if all that Pinoy Power can be harnessed? One of my heart-felt dreams is to see-- in my lifetime—some of that energy go towards building a little Philippine cultural center in Los Angeles, something like a combination of the wonderful, historic, multi-purpose SIPA (Search to Involve Pilipino Americans) building married to a modest version of Little Tokyo’s Aratani Theater.Reality check?I’ve seen Pinoy Power at work in impressive spurts regularly sparked by Kababayan Compassion during annual fundraisers for calamity/natural disaster victims in our homeland. I’ve witnessed the work of GawadKalinga. Seen the successful efforts of the ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. Read about the all the continuing Medical Missions. Knowing that such a reliable, tireless Pinoy spirit exists makes this dream about building a Filipino-American Cultural Center in Los

Angeles appear to be not as impossible as some people may think. Your thoughts, please? NOW NA, MANONG! After the November 6, 2012 elections, there was some buzz on the Internet and local media when at least 14 Filipino-Americans—mostly Democrats with one Republican—won national and state positions in California, Hawaii and Virginia. But not quite enough, I thought. Certainly, universes away from the kind of support that Jessica Sanchez of American Idol fame enjoyed for weeks. Also, I was expecting Pinoys to be a little more jubilant when Alameda Vice Mayor Rob Bonta made history in California as the first Filipino-American to be elected to the State Assembly. Unfortunately, it looks like Fil-Ams’ reaction to fellow Pinoys’ political triumphs are destined to register on a much, much lower scale than the usual frenzied reaction to a kababayan’s performance in boxing championships, singing competitions, and beauty pageants. The overwhelming Pinoy pride that accompanies celebrity worship is, of course, understandable and well-merited. However, we have to remember that in the scheme of things, the representation and performance of fellow Fil-Amsin the political arena impacts us more directly. I say this with some urgency because there are two Fil-Ams I know of running for positions in Los Angeles and Glendale and I fear not much is being heard about them. I would like to encourage our fellow Fil-Ams to support: Alex de Ocampo for LA City Council and Edith Fuentes for Glendale City Council. De Ocampo was recently endorsed by Gary Toebben, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce who stated that, “ Alex de Ocampo brings a unique mix of policy expertise and significant experience in how to make a business successful and how the government can help the local economy thrive.” In response, De Ocamposaid, “ I am honored to receive this endorsement and look forward to to using my experience in the private sector to find ways the city canhelp small businesses grow and thrive.” (You can check out Alex deOcampo’s FB

campaign page: http://www.facebook.com/ AlexDforCD13) Edith Fuentes, on the other hand, who is aiming for a seat at the Glendale City Council, was endorsed by former Glendale Mayor Bob Yousefian, who had worked with Fuentes when she was Glendale’s planning administrator. Yousefian underscored Fuentes’s 36 years of public service by saying, “You don’t need a genius; you need problem solvers, like Edith Fuentes. She has the intelligence, the common sense, the kind heart and knowledge of the city. If it is illegal right off the books, she would find ways to do it legally. Edith will find solutions to very difficult problems because she is a problem solver.” Both De Ocampo and Fuentes need the support of fellow Fil-Ams. As Fuentes pointed out, “I call FilAms (or Asians) the “sleeping giants” of LA or CA, as a whole. If we all act in unison, wake up and VOTE - there’s nothing we cannot accomplish. In UNITY we can achieve anything, our impact will be huge - we can put anyone in any government position - local, State or Nationwide. We are unstoppable, if we will just wake up, and NOW is the time. ACT!!!” Fuentes suggestions to Fil-Am Voters: “First - if they found out that there is/are FilAm candidates running for office in their area, get to know who they are, contact them. Second if they are registered voters already, make sure they go out and VOTE or turn in their absentee ballots ON TIME. Third - get other FilAms who are citizens, above 18 years of age, who are not registered to REGISTER. We need new numbers. 4th - the only way FilAms will win is if we all go out to vote (in person or ballots) and make impact with our numbers. We need bigger numbers.” (Check out the FB page of Edith

Fuentes: https://www.facebook.com/ EdithFuentesForGlendaleCityCouncil) GLUTHATIONE BLUES One would think Pinoy viewers would rather look Korean, Chinese, American or Spanish rather than the traditional Kayumanggi with the button/pug nose if one were to watch the endless parade of tear-jerking teleseryes, recycled sitcoms, mindless game shows, and fab-glam TV commercials imported from the Philippines via Channel 2, Channel 7, Channel 5—with all their stars fair-skinned and unblemished, practically bleached and gluthationed beyond ethnic recognition. As one observer noted: “Mukhangangkabayo—pero flawless!” MUKHANG MASA Decades ago, the phenomenal talents of Nora Aunor and Rico J. Puno virtually reversed the look of Philippine entertainment, rewriting codes of mass appeal to conform to more recognizably traditional Pinoy“Masa” attributes—darker complexion, shorter stature. They effectively erased the dominance of the mestizos on film and television. The masa and the idols were one. Carbon copies, as one wag put it. Now, the masa wants to be white and there’s an unabated upsurge in the sales of skin bleach. Anobatalaga, ‘Teh?! TELEVISION CHANNELS WITH “K” I have never ceased to be amused by how Pinoy TV networks define their relationship with their viewers. ABS-CBN Channel 2 is the Kapamilya Network. GMA Channel 7 is the Kapuso Network. And, of course, Channel 5 is TV Kapatid Network. Lahat may “K.” Pag may pumasok pang bagong TV Network, malamang “K” pa rin, bagaysaPinoy: KABIT.

movies, tv & music PINOY IN AMERICA by Lorenzo Paran III

Looking Back, Looking Ahead Though 2012 was a short year for Pinoy in America, it was a good one. I launched Pinoy in America, the website (www.pinoyinamerica.com), in June to add my voice to those of others who aim to recognize the works of Filipino artists in the U.S. One of the things I quickly realized when I moved here was how rich, diverse and vibrant the Filipino-American community’s artistic life was. I have always been partial to the arts even when I was living in the Philippines, but what I found here—whether it was in the realm of music, visual arts, writing and literature, photography or the other artistic fields— was enough to make me realize that Fil-Am artists are composing a body of work that while different from that of their brothers and sisters in the homeland is just as rich and important. I knew that, of course, even before coming here but being here and seeing for myself what Filipinos were doing artistically simply blew me away. I’m not going to go into details right now. Suffice it to say that Filipino-American art is impressive. Just think how many times

you who are here, too, have told yourself after watching a show that features Filipino talents or after attending a Filipino cultural festival, “Ang galing ng Pinoy!” That’s how I felt. At the same time, though, I felt sad because not enough was being done to report, much less promote, these artistic events—even in the Filipino-American media. It’s a good bet that if you don’t go to the show itself you wouldn’t know exactly what happened. You wouldn’t have a place to go where you could find coverage that does justice to that event and to the artists concerned. One experience that I kept having as I educated myself on Filipino-American artistic life is watching a concert or reading a book and then telling someone about it, and finding that the person I’m talking to has not even heard of the artist or artists in question. And I’m talking to a fellow Filipino here; if I’m talking to a non-Filipino, forget it—chances are even slimmer that he or she would know even the name of the artist. And who can blame them? On the eve of the first Filipino-American International Book Festival, held in San Francisco in 2011, Oscar Penaranda, the Bay Area Filipino community leader, raised this

question: How can we expect other people to notice our culture when we ourselves are not even giving it the attention it deserves? Thankfully these days there is social media to help spread the word about Filipino artists. But even so—or rather especially so—now that we need something to post or share on Facebook or other social media, it’s important that we have the high-quality, impartial, and current stories that tell the Filipino-American Story, that Filipino art deserves As I like to say, if we don’t write about it, it’s almost as if it doesn’t exist. I am lucky that I often get a front-row seat (sometimes literally) to these shows that I talk about. That’s only heightened my appreciation for the work of our brothers and sisters who’ve dedicated themselves to the pursuit of their craft. It’s also nurtured in me a sense of obligation to report what I see. That’s the philosophy behind Pinoy in America: to provide critical (not in the sense of “disapproving” but rather “analytical”) review that our art deserves. I am not saying, by the way, that I will provide the review that all of FilipinoAmerican art deserves or even that which is found in the Greater Los Angeles Area, which is my stomping ground—that work cannot be done by one person. I am not even saying that I would write good reviews. Not at all. But I am saying I want to try. I am greatly encouraged by the efforts of like-minded Filipinos in the U.S. In the Bay Area, for example, a group led by Mona Lisa Yuchengco and Gemma Nemenzo, the two women behind the now-defunct Filipinas Magazine has recently launched Positively Filipino (www.positivelyfilipino.com), an online magazine that aims to record the Filipino-American experience. Even in these early days, the website is distinguishing itself with the scope and quality of its coverage of Filipino culture in the U.S. In New York, Cristina Pastor has been

leading The FilAm (www.thefilam.net), also an online magazine, which aims to tell the story of Filipinos in the N.Y. area. As a testament to its service and commitment to the community, the website garnered two Plaridel awards in 2012. The Plaridel awards are given by the Philippine American Press Club (not to be confused with the FilipinoAmerican Press Club of California). The FilAm also recently branched out in San Francisco. I have not heard of similar efforts in Chicago, Dallas or other major U.S. cities that are centers of Fil-Am activity, but perhaps it’s just a matter of time before I do. Efforts like these need all the support they can get. I am fortunate to have the backing of two groups in particular as I report on the scene in the Greater Los Angeles Area. One of them is this publication, which has agreed to publish some of my pieces. This will go a long way in helping us achieve our goal. I thank the people behind it for providing a platform, not for me, but for the musicians, writers, visual artists and photographers I write about. My other supporter allows me to maintain my website. Many individuals have also been very supportive. There are too many to name here. Most of all, I want to thank the artists themselves, who have been generous with their time and their work whenever I have questions about them. Without them I literally could not have written the reviews and profiles I have written. I am grateful to them, most of all, for their dedication to their craft through which they nurture the good name of the Filipino people. Mabuhay sila. Beauty tips for all the brides-to-be: Look fabulous on your wedding day! Anyone who’s ever been a bride, a bridesmaid, mother of the bride, a debutante, or someone who has dolled up for a special occasion share an unguarded secret about getting ready for a major event: It pays to hire a professional hair and make-up stylist! A professional stylist can execute glamorous look you want with the most cutting edge tools. But I must say this depends highly on how clearly you have communicated your vision to the stylist. I always recommend a consultation session before that special day. There are clients whose minds are set on a certain look, without taking into consideration what the stylist has to work with. Collaboration between the client and the stylist is critical. In most cases, the responsibility rests on the stylist because as the professional they know what works, based on experience. My advice to clients: Do not be afraid to express your vision. Be bold, be clear, but don’t forget to be kind as well. A pleasant rapport with your stylist will make things run smoother and faster. Another major reason to hire a stylist: convenience. I offer my clients the option to either go on location (to do the style service where the event is going to be) or it can also be in-salon, at any of my salon branches. There’s a surcharge for on-location service but for the convenience of our busy clients, the price is very reasonable, especially if you book it in advance. Confidence is another important reason to hire a professional stylist for your

special occasion. We can recommend make up and hair styles that will best suit your face shape, your skin tone, and your personality. My team of makeup artists are very excited about our high-definition makeup which has staying power, provides impressive coverage, and flawless results, more than regular brush-on make-up. The price for this make-up application is slightly more expensive but the quality is definitely worth it. In terms of choosing a make-up style, well, the trends vary. For brides, we can create a natural-looking make-up. This doesn’t mean “everyday” or “washed out” makeup. I define natural-looking make-up as a look that emphasizes natural features and skin glow. When done properly, the facial complexion radiates with the clever use of neutral tones. It’s ethereal and elegant and timeless. Or a dramatic smoky eyes look. It depends on the personality of the bride-to-be. It’s advisable to plan ahead when booking a stylist. You need to know you can talk to the stylist about your vision and that the stylist, in turn, has the range and experience to pull it off. At Monet Salon, we reward clients who plan ahead. If you book us for bridal make-up service three months in advance, we are offering a special discount. Please visit www.monetsalon. com for more about our services, or call Monet (213) 216-4923. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) If you feel you must make a confession, tell the whole story, rather than keep a few secrets stored away. Impress your superiors with a creative idea, but be careful of who you confide in. If you’re asked to take on extra tasks at work, say yes only if you can fit it in your schedule and it will be beneficial in the long run. SAGITARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Love can be fateful, if it’s meant to be it will happen. You need to look your best, but don’t go overboard in trying to make a good impression, it is best to present the true you. Be careful of being someone’s bank – it’s time to refill your own savings account. Pass out the compliments at work, it won’t go unnoticed. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) The energy of transiting Jupiter and the Sun can make you want to hurry love, but resist the temptation to make a commitment before you’re ready. Enjoy the honeymoon period and keep your focus on work responsibilities. A new arrangement can work in your favor, tune in to your intuition to know if it is right for you. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) When you combine business with pleasure it can lead you on a direct route to a special sweetheart. With Jupiter and Mercury influencing your work, home and family, you can consider changes in one area which will affect the other. A possessive love gesture can show you care, but also be a turn off. ARIES (Mar. 21- Apr. 20) If your boss and love–mate are in competition for your time, try not to neglect either of them. However, trying to keep everyone happy can be stressful. In the end, you have to do what’s right for you. Make friends with business colleagues to boost your popularity and your bank account. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) With love, get ready for a whole new ball game, what happened in the past is never to be repeated. When it concerns money, be positive, but be careful of giving someone mixed messages. Be clear about the outcome you want and your intentions so there are no secrets that can come back and haunt you later. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) If love has escaped you, then this is the perfect time to get busy on the social scene to meet new people and attract romance. You have entered a new phase in your personal 1 life– ditch old habits to make way for new ones. To get ahead, be strategic, it’s time to do what is right for you not just for others. CANCER (June 22-July 22) With action planet Mars opposite your sign, a passionate love affair can get your heart racing, and could end up being the love of your life. Good news heads your way regarding the state of your business affairs, but don’t start celebrating until you have confirmation. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) A secret admirer can emerge from the shadows. Venus waves her magic wand, and before you know it, you’re the object of someone’s affection. It’s empowering to be independent, however, if you want a relationship, you also need to consider the other persons needs. Change at work can come without warning, be ready to move into top gear. Your talents are finally recognized. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Passion planet Mars casts his spell on you. Getting what you want in love can become a reality, and sooner than you think! When it concerns money, keep your private business private. There is new energy in your work zone, be consistent and you will outshine everyone, including your competitors. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) Align yourself with the office gossip to learn valuable information before its front page news. Unexpected twists and turns in your love life can be challenging but enlightening. Saving and spending money is always on the agenda, but don’t forget to keep a little for a well–earned holiday treat. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) If love and money are an issue, communicate your intentions in writing to steer clear of drama. At work, be careful of running yourself ragged with an increasing hectic schedule. This is a powerful career time, fine tune your creativity and time management skills to ensure you are productive. @TheFilamInsider
