SHOEPRINTS
“A pair of sneakers today can be made out of over 50 different components from 5 countries. One single shoe will pass up to 240 hands during its assemblage. (T. Vanderbilt, The Sneaker Book 2001)

BACKGROUND
BACKGROUND The quote from the previous page was what started my project. I found it interesting how an object that has existed for so long with the sole purpose (pun intended) to protect our feet, has become such a complex item to make. I wanted to get a deeper understanding of the craft of shoemaking and see if I could learn from history to create more sustainable shoe for the future. I started my project by visiting tanneries and shoemakers to gain more knowledge so that I by the end of it would be able to make my own shoe using locally sourced materials.

TANNERY
Raw hides delivered from the butcher get preserved in salt.
The hides are then tumbled and treated with tanning agents.
Leather being measured and stretched to remove wrinkles.
Vegetable tanned leather ready to be used!
TÄRNSJÖ TANNERY My research began with one of the most common raw materials used for shoes, which also poses a big environmental issue, Leather. Most of the leather being used for footwear is chrome tanned. Using chromium to treat leather is a toxic process that is harmful to nature. At Tärnsjö Garveri they are producing vegetable tanned leather, an old tradition in which the leather is being treated with natural tanning agents such as bark from trees.

BESPOKE SHOES
Emil showing me some ongoing projects.
NANTON STUDIO I visited with Emil, an industrial designer who in his freetime also runs Nanton studio, a small shop on Sรถdermalm where he makes bespoke leather shoes. Custom made to fit each customer perfectly. Emil showed me how to take measurements of the foot, modify the last, make patterns and assemble the final shoe.

SHOEINDUSTRY MUSEUM
THE SHOEINDUSTRY MUSEUM Through my research I came in contact with the company Kavat which was founded 1945 in the small swedish town of Kumla that used to be the centre for shoemakers in sweden. Kavat still produces a limited collection of shoes here in the factory, a factory which now also serves as a musem. The time had come to make my first pair of shoes and I was lucky enough to get to use their facilities.

FINAL PROPOSAL
FINAL PROPOSAL My final proposal was these unisex slip-on shoes. The upper is made in one piece of leather with a single stitch in the back to minimize the use of adhesives. It is then stitched to a leather board which makes it possible to change the midsole when it is worn out. The midsole is made out of cork and natural rubber to keep the shoes light and while being a more environmentally friendly alternative to commonly used materials such as EVA or PU.

DUNDERDON
Dunderdon offers both professional workwear and casual clothing in their collection. By using modular solutions the products can be added/stripped with function, giving them either a clean or a technical look. This project is their first line of safety boots which will be release for autumn 18. The launch will consist of two winter style boots optimized for the harsh conditions of the scandinavian winter.

IDEATION
Based on the Dunderdon clothing line with its monochrome colours and technical details I wanted the footwear to have a tactical look inspired by the army. Different textures and materials would give the shoes depth.

These shoes are by far the most technically advanced I’ve worked on. It required me to use my entire toolbox ad a designer, from detailed product renderings to CAD modelling certain parts to make molds. It took two trips to the factory and over 15 samples before they were finalized.

SOLID GEAR
SOLID GEAR SAFETY SNEAKERS
Solid Gear is a swedish brand that offers safety shoes inspired by the sportswear industry. For this project I was asked to design and develop a new range of midcut sneakers using the goretex surround technology which allows for the entire shoe to breathe while being completely waterproof. For any safety shoe it is important that the shoe is comfortable and supportive since the users tend to walk many hours a day in them. For this project I was inspired by basketball shoes and decided to give the shoes a wrapped tongue for extra comfort and support.
