completed work APARTEMENT ST LISBON, PORTUGAL photography: FG+SG client: private area: 82 m² cost: 28.300 â‚Ź Apr 2010 - Jul 2010

The aim of the project was to preserve the aesthetic memory of what was once a mid-twentieth century apartment, within the specific urban context of Alvalade, maximizing the use of space with functional and organizational changes, updates to the level of materials and equipment, enabling a more contemporary way of inhabiting the space. The footer, the original moldings and the old wood parquet flooring are the three aspects that allow more objectively the reinterpretation of the flat and form the conducting wire that tells the story of the house. A traffic yellow volume in the kitchen, a dark grey in the living room and another one in a turquoise toilet, will comply and characterize some areas, marking the image of this apartment.

completed work APARTEMENT JSJ LISBON, PORTUGAL photography: João Morgado client: private area: 143 m² cost: 69.500 € Nov 2009 - Apr 2010

The purpose of intervention: an outdated apartment in the early ‘90s, in Ajuda neighborhood. The goal: to transform the current space in an updated and functional dwelling, taking advantage of a privileged view of Monsanto and the Tagus river. The kitchen, bathrooms, hall and office spaces were the ones that suffered a more profound intervention. The ideas of organization, clean spaces, functionality, ergonomics and comfort were always present in the choice of materials and redesign of the spaces. There were significant improvements in terms of acoustic and thermic comfort, with the replacement of all window frames and shading system. The colour white was widely used throughout the apartment and both the natural and artificial light were treated with special care.

completed work APARTMENT AA LISBON, PORTUGAL photography: Filipe Melo Oliveira client: private area: 95 m² cost: 21.000 â‚Ź Oct 2008 - Feb 2009

An apartment surgically intervened. The doors were reinterpreted, replaced, but kept its opaque, translucent or transparent character. All the wood floor was restored to its original look and re varnished. The kitchen was totally redesigned with more functionality and the bathroom and toilet were improved.

completed work VERGÍLIO FERREIRA HIGH SCHOOL LISBON, PORTUGAL colaboration: Atelier Central Arquitectos photography: João Morgado client: Parque Escolar EPE area: 14.585 m² cost: 11.810.000 € Oct 2008 - May 2011

Today we face a new paradigm: no more schools, but better schools. Prefabrication, modulation and repetition are necessary in response to this new challenge. The need no longer focuses on building new schools, but mainly in the transformation and renovation of the existing schools. Correct pathologies, enhance the thermal insulation of buildings, implement modern infrastructures, rationalize spaces, in short, increase functional and energetic efficiency of buildings, while taking the opportunity to improve the aesthetic aspects that were not always upheld in the past. The connection of different levels and the creation of a tangible face of the school to the community became the main objectives.

completed work HOUSE AT FUSTIGA TORRES VEDRAS, PORTUGAL colaboration: Atelier Central Arquitectos photography: FG+SG client: private area: 403 m² cost: 394.250 â‚Ź Sep 2007 - Jul 2008

Concept: reorganizing a dysfunctional old villa into a functional modern house, respecting the place, the landscape and the building. Visually clean and simple interior spaces that strongly interact with the natural landscape. Natural materials and traditional construction techniques define the comfort and mould the light of the different and in-between spaces. The house is built in poor stone masonry, with white stucco and yellow ceramic tiles used as wall covering. Riga wood, wine slate stone and lioz limestone are the main materials for floor covering. Strong relations are generated with almost all interior spaces of the house that come to life around the entry patio. An old press room, used for producing wine or olive oil, was refurbished to be the living room. The wood trusses define the scale of the space which opens its view to the rest of the plot and landscape.

projects MO HOUSE MONFORTINHO, PORTUGAL client: private area: 300,00 m² cost: 225.000 â‚Ź Since Jan 2007

A country house on the outskirts of a small village. A strong connection to the earth and the ingrained habits of the community. Two volumes interact with between them and project the experiences of the living spaces to the south landscape, where it can be seen beyond the border. Two volumes organize the interior space: the L shaped bigger one is white; the smaller one, a rectangular box that penetrates the bigger one, is coated in local stone. By this one that divides the social and more private areas, we enter in a patio accessing the house. The kitchen, the dining and living rooms turn south to a porch. To east, the bedrooms and bathrooms. In the outer L shaped space a swimingpool has its place. The bedrooms wing lays in a slate stone level that touches the terrain.

A pre ruin in a plot of 3m width by 5m long, between two bigger buildings in the historical centre of Nazaré is the beginning of this project. There is a will of comfort in the inner space and discretion in the outer apearence. The used materials and the clarity of the program make this project simple and coherent. Limestone and light wood create a warm ambiance. Also present are the maintenance of the regular orthogonal windows, the traditional ceramic tiles roof and the exterior wainscot that makes the contact with the street. The program develops verticaly like the house: a kitchen in the ground floor, more related with the community, a living room in the first floor, and a toilet and a bedroom in the second floor.

projects AUTOMOTIVE DEALERSHIPS PORTUGAL colaboration: Atelier Central Arquitectos clients: Opel, Hyundai, Chevrolet, Audi, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, CitroĂŤn Since Sep 2007

Some examples of remodeling projects and construction of new showrooms and workshops of car brands in Portugal. The aim is always the optimization of space, where the corporate image may have a role in the concept and identity of the various concessions. The materials are specific to each corporate identity and are used to grant comfort to the different functional areas of each dealership.

projects HOGESCHOOL UTRECHT AMERSFOORT, THE NETHERLANDS colaboration: DP6 Architectuurstudio client: Burgfonds area: 18.000 m² Jan 2007 - May 2007 1st PRIZE | UNDER CONSTRUCTION

For its Amersfoort branch the Utrecht Academy is in need of a building in which the various educational departments (Economy, Management, Engeneering, among others), which are currently housed in a number of buildings all over the town, can be combined. The space is organized in a dynamic way, with the relationship and the views over the city being two important caracteristics. A red mass that lays on an apparently more free and open floor, is the brand image of the building. The ground floor and part of the first floor will be public in nature. Besides classrooms, study areas and offices, the building also has a bar, and public shops, a large dining room, mediathec, auditorium and anfitheatre.

This project refers to a professional school for intermediate vocational training. In addition to the school building for 1278 students, a sports centre and a covered car park will be constructed. The urban plan for this area calls for the building outlines to roughly follow the boundaries of the sites in order to create built-up urban spaces. The tallest volume is four to five stories high and for its plasticity the theatre volume has a prominent presence. The North facade is transparent, revealing the activities inside the building. The main entrance to the school and the sports centre will be by South near a dynamic bycicle zone and a water canal.

existing

proposal

This project consists in an urban plan inside an echological reserve, with housing of diferent typologies. The preservation of the natural environments of the area is achieved through the low density of construction, the direct visual relationship with the river or the woods and the public nature of almost the entire space. It is intended a total integration with the ecological reserve, with a sustainable view of the construction, the integration and experience of the public and private built spaces.

competitions PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLING BRIDGE OVER 2ª CIRCULAR| FUNDAÇÃO GALP ENERGIA EXPERIMENTA DESIGN 2009 | LISBON, PORTUGAL coauthoring: architect M. Caiado Sep 2009

Once upon a time, the area was an outskirt, but nowadays is actualy an intensive moment in the city, with a busy road, housing and service areas. The Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge is the designed as part of the public space, connecting and re/thinking two diferent parts with a fluid movement. A metalic structure holds the bridge that links a lowered public square to a tower on the two ends. The lowered public square and the garden around it intend to create a more relaxing space, with a bar/ cafeteria. The tower consists on a huge rain water reservoir and a treatment facility, allowing the water to be sprinkled over 2ª circular, getting down the CO² levels efficiently, to be used in the gardens around the area or even to wash public spaces.

competitions RAKVERE VABADUSE SQUARE AND ST. PAUL’S CHURCH RAKVERE, ESTONIA colaboration: ATMB13 Arquitectos area: 3.875 m² cost: 1.451.271 € Jul 2009

longitudinal section

Walking a path around the Church generated by an interaction between the monolith and an “organic” curtain that contains all the expansion areas. Two neutral voices join and create a new kind of harmony. The new building works as a protective frame. A curtain made of wood columns as trees in a forest. The roof is flat like Arvo Pärt music and orthodox icons, resisting the attempt to place them in time or space. The use of wood justifies as a locally available and sustainable material and also as a matter of creating ambience generated by the warmth and tactile natural wood, as by its strong and pleasant aroma. The coronation of the columns takes a very important symbolic role going back to a certain architectural tradition, winning back the values of pre-modern architecture in a contemporary version. The transition between different materials, the concrete slab and the wood columns produces a discreet dissonance.

An object by two phases. A 3x6m stand like the others, but which in certain moments stands out and is seen far away, like a landmark in the area. A remarkable presence that enhances the disclosure and the interest for the exhibited products. Create a stand structure with RHS metal profiles, linoleum flooring in carmine red, MDF walls painted in white and coated with white nylon fabric, light enough, capable of being inflated by means of two large turbine fan on the ceiling and up to 12m height. This is the proposed idea. The top wall is thicker in order to create a storage space, in which is gathered a white curtain that creates a meeting area when it is in use. In the remaining available space hosts an exhibition and demonstration area with capacity for three people. In the most exposed corner, L shaped metal profiles form a display for catalogs and brochures.

Dinamism and adaptation of the contemporary way of living. Everything changes quickly in society and therefore the living conditions of the space are diverse from family to family. A single family house that can evolve in its typology, with spaces that are added ans used according to a logic, a project, and to the needs of owners. This makes possible an evolution, a growth of families and therefore the population.

competitions PALLETE SHELTER ESPAÇOS HABITà VEIS ARQUITECTURA.PT | AFRICA coauthoring: architect Arno Geesink May 2007

Wooden cargo palletes that are no longer useful are now reused and grouped up. They build up a space, a shelter at night and a commerce spot during the day. A two or three days temporary shelter for itinerant tradesmen, merchants and farmers, that move between cities in local or regional week markets. This shelter would be built in central public areas, such as squares, in developing african cities.
