Preface By Fr. Donal Hogan Regional Director of the Philippines

This little book celebrates the offering of their lives, by the Columban Martyrs of Malate. They are symbols of those Columban Fathers all over the world from our founding in 1918 who have given their lives for the love of Jesus Christ and in their efforts to make His name known and loved everywhere. Malate parish was the first commitment of the Columban Fathers when they came to the Philippines in 1929. From Malate they spread throughout the Philippines building churches and schools and strengthening the faith. Today many young Filipinos have joined the Columban fathers and are set to bring this faith to Asia and throughout the world. We hope that you, our readers, will support us and them; in doing so you become companions in mission and indeed missionaries yourselves.

'Some follow Jesus to the breaking of the bread, but few to the drinking ofthe chalice. When the supreme chalice came to his lips on that February day in 1945, Fr. Henaghan walked up the last road, it is remembered, with head bowed down. Those who knew him have no doubt that it was bowed in prayer. What prayer? It is not given to one man to see into another man's soul, but I can have no doubt that near the heart of that moving prayer there was what he himself had called, "that prayer ottire- thy will be done." He had learned it well in a garden of olives.'

Fr. Anthony 0' Brien Former Superior General of the Columban Fathers
