T

he Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is undeniably the most exciting and glamorous cinema event in Japan every year. And its 27th edition has just ended last October 31. Although the Filipino films “Ruined Heart” and “Above The Clouds” failed to win any accolades, we are very happy with the feedback that we heard from the viewers. On behalf of my photographer Din Eugenio and myself, we’d like to thank you for letting us share our excitement with you in covering for the second time, one of the biggest film festivals in the world. In the middle of showbiz spotlight, where one can be easily drowned by the glitzy trappings of the business, there is a certain kind of earthiness that Angelica exudes. And she is never apologetic for it.

ou listen to her TV interviews and you can feel her unabashed honesty. Dragged into controversies, she never fails to put a game face on, her heart on her sleeve. Bashed and criticized and she always have a ready answer that can make the naysayers groping for words. Most importantly, when you watch her in movies and TV series, whether it is drama or comedy, you know that you’re in for a ride with her impeccable acting that is raw and moving and guileless. Attribute all these to her being in the show business for the last 21 years. Yes, she is one of the adorable kids that we love to watch in ABS-CBN’s “Ang TV,” the sympathetic Becky in “Sarah…Ang Munting Prinsesa,” the one who earned Best Child Actress awards and nominations as Issa in “Ama, Ina, Anak,” the innocent and voluptuous Malen in “Santa Santita” that gave her the Best Actress award, the submissive and feisty Jacqueline in the movie “One More Try” opposite Dingdong Dantes and Angel Locsin; and recently as the insecure Estelle in “Beauty in a Bottle.” These are just some of the few notable works that Angelica has under her belt. Being in show business at a young age, she has learned the ropes of the game and has taken with her valuable lessons that probably paved the way for her to discover the formula to longevity in an industry where you deal with fickle- mindedness and the arrival of new and younger artists. “Feeling ko dapat hindi mo minamata ang kahit na sino maliit na tao, malaking tao. Kasi at the end of the day, mas importante at mas nakakataba ng puso iyong sasabihin nila, 'ay, nakatrabaho ko na 'yan, masarap katrabaho 'yan,’” Angelica said in her interview on Aquino and Abunda. “Kasi kahit anong galing mo kung napapangitan sila sa ugali mo [mahirap]. Marami naman puwedeng pumasok sa industriya at pag-aralan 'yong acting di ba? So importante talaga 'yong ugali ng isang tao.” In another round of interview on “The Buzz,” she admitted that though she believes that there are no big or small, she is picky with projects and roles to portray. This is because she wants the public to see something new and worthwhile in every project that she appears in. “Ayaw kong sayangin yung pera ng mga tao. Ayaw kong sayang iyong panahon nila na papanoorin nila ako sa TV or sa pelikula na ‘Ay nakita ko na ito, napanood ko na ito.’ Gusto ko kapag pinapanood na nila ako, kapag nagbibigay sila ng oras sa akin, sulit iyon. Iyong ‘Sulit yung pera ko, natuwa kami kay Angelica ngayon.’” And though a lot of celebrities are getting engaged, Angelica is in no hurry to settle down any time soon with John Lloyd Cruz whom she’s in a relationship with since 2012. She used to be so public with her past relationships but this time Angelica chose to share only bits and pieces of their relationship. What is more important is they keep it real and they make it a point to never lose respect for each other. “Sinisigurado ko lang na may respeto ako sa sarili ko, sa partner ko, sa mga taong mahal niya, sa pamilya niya, and sigurado ako na siya gano'n din sa akin.” Through it all, Angelica has proven that with talent coupled with the right attitude one cannot be easily toppled by any controversies, rumors and criticisms. TOKYO, Japan – The 27th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) came to a close on October 31, after nine days of tributes and screening, with a glitzy awards ceremony at TOHO Cinemas in Roppongi Hills.

T

he Tokyo Grand Prix went to the US-France co-production “Heaven Knows What,” the directorial debut of brothers Joshua and Benny Safdie. The top award comes with a cash prize of $50,000. They also took the Best Director award with their film about a young heroin addict who finds love in the streets of New York. The Special Jury Prize went to BulgariaGreece co-production “The Lesson.”

Best Actress was Rie Miyazawa for her role in Daihachi Yoshida’s “Pale Moon,” which also bagged the Audience Award. Robert Wieckiewicz won Best Actor for his performance in the Polish film “The Mighty Angel.” The Russian film “Test” won the awards for Best Artistic Contribution and WOWOW Viewer’s Choice. The other big winners of the Festival included “Borderless” (Best Asian Future

Film), “The Last Reel” (The Spirit of Asia Award by the Japan Foundation Asia Center), “100 Yen Love” (Best Picture-Japanese Film Splash) and “Ecotherapy Getaway Holiday” (Special Mention-Japanese Film Splash). The main stars of the closing ceremony were Hollywood director Tim Burton and Japanese actor-auteur Takeshi Kitano, who were the first recipients of the Samurai Award for their outstanding achievements in filmmaking.

he 42-year-old actor and wrestler was greeted by hundreds of Japanese fans, some of them crying, who lined up to see him. “The Japanese fans really mean so much to me. From the bottom of my heart, arigato gozaimasu. I love you,” Johnson said. He revealed that “I was five years old when I had my very first poster of Hercules, and I was inspired then by the man who is powerful and strong. I really appreciate his heroics.” Johnson was accompanied by director Brett Ratner and producer Beau Flynn. “We are so grateful to be here with all of you. You are the first audience in all of Japan to see the film. The Japanese fans are by far the best fans in the world,” Ratner enthused. The director revealed that one of his heroes is the great Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and even “studied his movies in order to make Hercules.” “Thank you, Japan so much. This is a very memorable and important night for us. This is the end of our world tour. We love you so much. Such an honor to be here,” Flynn said. Just before the film screening, a stage greeting was held where the three were joined by Japanese professional wrestler Keiji Muto and actress Sumire Matsubara. Distributed jointly by Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, the film was shown in Japanese cinemas on October 24. 12

Interview: Meet the Cast and Crew of ‘Above The Clouds’

TOKYO, Japan – “Above The Clouds,” a film by young director Pepe Diokno starring Pinoy rock legend Pepe Smith, in his actorial debut, and Kapuso star Ruru Madrid, had its world premiere at the recently concluded 27th Tokyo International Film Festival.

A

lthough the film didn’t win Best Asian Future, its story definitely made its way into the hearts of the audience from around the world, especially the Filipinos who watched it. FilJap Magazine’s editor-in-chief Florenda Corpuz was able to interview Diokno, Smith and Madrid, so read on to learn more about the thought and vision behind this film. FilJap: What inspired this film? Diokno: Maraming inspirasyon yung pelikula kasi sinulat ko ito over the course of three years. Una, yung typhoon Ondoy na marami ang namatay. This and coupled with the death of my grandmother in 2011, the feelings of loss and grief, I poured it sa script. FilJap: What was the reason for choosing Pepe Smith to play the lead role? Diokno: Sinulat ko talaga yung pelikula na siya ang nasa isip ko. I know him from family and friends, so may image ako of him in my head. But when I got to know him even more parang mas ang lalim kesa sa image, at napakalaking inspirasyon yun kung sino talaga siya. FilJap: For a rock legend like you, what was it like to play a dramatic role? Smith: At first, I was nervous, yung tipong what am I gonna do here. But when direk explained to me everything and

Madrid: Sabi ko exciting ito kasi ngayon ko lang makakatrabaho yung rocker talaga. Nung nag-location shoot na kami, nagulat ako kasi naramdaman ko agad na lolo ko siya. Sobrang gaan ng pakiramdam every time na magkasama kami kaya mas madali na sa akin ang mga eksena. FilJap: What was the most challenging thing about this film, aside from filming it in the Mountain Province? Diokno: Lahat. The fact that it was such a huge production, with a crew of 124 people, going up to a mountain, and having to still keep it small and intimate was a big challenge. FilJap: What does it mean to you, to have a film at TIFF? And what do you hope to get out of it? Diokno: I’ve always looked up to Japanese cinema. I grew up watching

Miyazaki and Kurosawa, so to be invited here was a huge honor for us. This is the world premiere, so it’s like seeing your baby walk for the first time, you just hope na it finds its way. I just hope na it finds an audience here in Japan and also abroad. FilJap: What do you think will be the impact of this film in the international audience? Diokno: I think it shows a different side of Filipino movies. I hope this film gives people a broader view of what our cinema is, and see some of the most beautiful parts of the Philippines and our culture. FilJap: This is your first time to attend an international film festival, how’s the experience so far? Smith: Cool. FilJap: What is your advice to aspiring Pinoy filmmakers here in Japan? Diokno: It’s really all about the story. Pinakamagandang magagawa ng isang Filipino filmmaker is to tell Filipino stories. FilJap: Any message for your Pinoy fans here in Japan? Smith: Sana panoorin ninyo itong pelikula namin at makabunot kayo ng mga karanasan on how to deal with everyday life. And huwag ninyo kalimutan mag-rock and roll. Maraming salamat. A new batch of Filipino artists with extraordinary voices took center stage in the highly anticipated Season 2 of Philippine TV’s best vocal competition, “The Voice of the Philippines,” which began last October 26 on ABS-CBN.

ack in Season 2 are its quartet of superstar coaches Apl de Ap, Sarah Geronimo, Bamboo, and Lea Salonga, with the solid team of multi-awarded host Luis Manzano, Robi Domingo, Alex Gonzaga, and the ultimate multimedia star Toni Gonzaga. “I’m really happy about the hosts of Season 1 and Kids teaming up. Of course, I’m proud to be back too, since this format is really close to my heart. We get to discover more talents and I’m sure it’s going to be an exciting season,” said Toni. Luis, who hosted “The Voice Kids,” shared that Season 2 brought him a brand-new experience because aside from his regular hosting duties, he also went to different places in the country to personally invite artists to join the blind auditions. “In ‘The Voice Kids,’ we were very impressed by big voices coming from little children, and that proves that innate talent of Pinoy singers. This season, I got to travel the country and 14

I saw the amazement and joy in each artist when I gave them the envelope. During the blinds, I surprised and checked on

some of them. So I got to know their inspirations and motivations,” Luis shared. In Season 2, coaches Apl, Sarah, Bamboo, and Lea will have to assemble 14 artists to form a team by the end of the blind auditions. The new season will also introduce the ‘steal,’ which will definitely add spice and excitement to the competition. During the battle rounds, each coach will have to pit two artists against each other and choose only one that will move on to the next round. If a coach likes an artist, he or she can ‘steal’ the losing artist. If two or more coaches like the losing artist, the artist, just like in the blind auditions, gets to choose which coach or team to transfer to. The new season will showcase artists with notably refined artistry representing various fields and ages, including a nurse, a bus vendor, a farmer, a chemist, a Zumba instructor, and a former recording artist.

Kabuki

The first recorded performance by okuni, a woman considered the ancestor of present day kabuki, was carried out in 1603 in Kyoto with her troupe of female dancers. The word kabuki is derived from the word kabuku, which means “to be eccentric or breaking social norms.” Okuni was known to imitate the costumes and other traits of kabukimono, people with extreme hairstyles and fashions. This type of entertainment was called kabuki, but with a different meaning: ka (music), bu (dance) and ki (acting). Later during the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate banned women from performing on stage as the authorities considered their popularity as a threat to public order. Eventually, male actors play all female roles in kabuki and were called onnagata, while actors who play male roles were called tachiyaku. The period of 1603-1868 is considered kabuki’s golden age, where the wealth of the theaters accompanied by lavish costumes and sets allowed actors and playwrights to pursue more daring achievements.

Nakamura Kyozo is a kabuki actor known for his diverse repetoire spanning across

the Nakamura Jakuemon IV family. In 1994, he was promoted to nadai, the upper rank of kabuki actors. He has received many awards including the National Theatre’s Encouragement Prize in 2002 and 2008. Prominent Plays Since 1960, many kabuki shows have been played abroad. The top three most performed plays are “Renjishi” (The Father and Son Lions), “Bo-shibari” (Tied to a Pole) and “Fuji-musume” (The Wisteria Maiden). Kabuki in Modern Times Shochiku dates back its origin to 1895, when Takejiro Otani started promoting theatrical performances as the owner of Kyoto Shin Kyogoku Haniza. I

t is with this plight that airports are the best place to witness the most genuine expression of love and the most heartbreaking scenes where one says goodbye to a loved one for a separation that may take a year, or two, or only God knows until when. Many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), especially those who are parents, missed seeing their kids grow up as well as celebrating birthdays, weddings, reunions and other important family occasions. There is the constant longing to be together especially during Christmas, which is the most celebrated event in the Philippines being a Catholic country. And this is where technology comes in. Now viewed as a necessity, almost everyone is equipped with computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones that make communication easier and more efficient. By a mere touch or click in a button, one can speak to another person wherever they may be. It makes distance closer and separation more bearable with all these communication devices and social media platforms. Even communication networks have launched promos that allow Filipinos to call their families back home at an affordable rate. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have made conversations and creating memories more accessible and fun through sharing of photos and instant messaging. Other mobile applications like Skype, Viber, WeChat, and WhatsApp also give a whole new meaning to togetherness. Take the use of Skype, an OFW and his family can see and talk to one another face to face through Skype despite different time zones. That although nothing can still beat the feeling of being with your loved ones physically, these technological breakthroughs have made distance and separation not as agonizing as it used to be compared when one needs a few days or even a month to hear a reply from someone via letters or snail mails. All these forms of digital communication emphasize the strong family ties as an important trait of Filipinos; that in whatever part of the world, staying in touch is a must especially in celebrating important traditions like Christmas. Christmas in the Philippines is like no other and not even distance can hinder the Filipino spirits in celebrating it with their families and loved ones. Thank God, we now live in a borderless world. he Philippine Embassy in Tokyo wishes to inform the public that starting November 1, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) will implement the International Passenger Service Charge (IPSC). This means that the Php 550.00 airport terminal fee will be integrated into the price of airline tickets upon booking or ticket purchase. The integration scheme will be implemented simultaneously by all airlines worldwide and shall also cover passengers departing Manila to any destination outside the Philippines. It aims to provide convenient and hassle-free travel and conforms with international standards and practices of airports worldwide. The integration shall recognize and honor all exemptions mandated by law such as Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), Muslim pilgrims endorsed by the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) and athletes endorsed by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). Exemption may be availed of with the presentation of an exemption certificate duly issued by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) or the MIAA. Children ages two (2) years and below are also exempted from the IPSC. A refund is allowed for exempted passengers who upon booking or ticket purchase were charged the Php 550.00 terminal fee. It may be processed and paid at the NAIA terminals upon departure twenty-four

(24) hours daily, or at the MIAA Administration Building from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Mondays thru Fridays except holidays. For further information on the integration scheme, please visit MIAA’s website: www.miaa. gov.ph/.
