hen I met Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise at the Japan premiere of his film “Oblivion” last year, I thought it was only a one-time opportunity. In my report, I described it as surreal for the simple reason that he is my ultimate idol. That experience has taught me a lot of things— representing myself as a Filipino journalist in this foreign land being the most important. “Come here, come here.” How can I forget this line uttered to me by Tom? More than a year have passed since that encounter but it feels like it just happened yesterday. On June 26, we were invited to cover the red carpet premiere of his new sci-fi action movie “All You Need Is Kill,” held at Roppongi Hills Arena in Tokyo—the same place where I first met him. I was ecstatic beyond words. I never thought I’d be

able to see him again in the flesh. Together with FilJap Magazine’s perennial photographer Din Eugenio, we covered the event. And just like in all Japanese premieres that we attended, we were the only Japan-based Filipino media present. “I love you!” were Tom’s first and last words for his excited fans. “You’re here!” was his verbal acknowledgement when he saw me in the crowd of local and international media. It’s because of these dreamlike encounters that we came up with the idea of having him on our cover—an act fitted for his charm, humility and kindness. May this month’s issue bring you one step closer to Japan’s most beloved Hollywood icon Tom Cruise, as this is our way of sharing with all of you the priceless experience I had with him. Returns Home After Fruitful Japan Trip HIROSHIMA, Japan – President Benigno S. Aquino III returned to Manila on the night of June 24 following his one-day working visit to Japan, where he met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo, addressed a peace seminar and visited a memorial for wartime victims.

uring their meeting, Aquino and Abe exchanged views on current developments in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) and the East China Sea. “This is our fourth summit meeting in the last 12 months and through our frequent communication, I understand that we have great progress in terms of the development of the bilateral relationship, which is quite meaningful,” Abe said in his opening remarks at the summit meeting. The President said the Philippines wants to advance the defense and security dialogue with Japan to boost its cooperation with its closest Asian strategic ally. He noted that the agreement with Japan will not necessarily be similar to the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the United States, but it will address the Philippines’ needs during emergencies. On the West Philippine Sea issue, Aquino told his Japanese counterpart

about the Philippines’ move to push for the strict observance of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, to which claimant countries and China agreed in 2002. He expressed hope that the ASEAN and China immediately agree on a binding Code of Conduct in the South China Sea. “It is with this that I look forward to working with Your Excellency—towards the realization of our shared aspirations not only for our peoples but also, and more importantly, in building a more peaceful and more secure Asia-Pacific region,” Aquino said. After the summit meeting, Aquino proceeded to Hiroshima to address the Consolidation for Peace for Mindanao Conference, where he renewed his commitment to bring lasting peace to Southern Philippines after the signing of an accord with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front last March. He said his administration will work hard to ensure an orderly and

At the same time, he thanked the countries and organizations that helped the Philippine government and the MILF agree on a peace pact. He expressed his gratitude to the US, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Norway, Libya, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, and the European Union. He also thanked the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for its continuing efforts for development and stability in Mindanao. After the conference, the President led a wreath-laying ceremony at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, referred to by the locals as the Atomic Bomb Dome to remember the victims of the nuclear attack in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. He was then guided to a tour of the museum. He was given a copy of the Peace Declaration by Mayor Matsui before he signed the Museum Guestbook, signaling the end of the tour. The President and his delegation left Hiroshima at about 8:45 p.m. and arrived in Manila at midnight.

ogether with director Doug Liman and producer Erwin Stoff, the 52-year-old action superstar successfully traveled over 1,770 kilometers in a single day, flying from Osaka to Fukuoka to Tokyo, meeting press and greeting fans. The ‘loop around Japan’ promotional campaign meant to mimic the time loop experienced by Cruise’s character in the movie. “Konnichiwa! I love you. I love Japan. I’m so happy to be here. Thank you so much for this warm welcome. I’m overwhelmed and humbled. I truly appreciate it,” Cruise told fans. Cruise’s visit kicked off at Dotonbori Riverside in Osaka where he was given a hero’s welcome. Then they flew to Fukuoka to attend a fan event at Hakata City. They capped off the day by hitting the red carpet at Roppongi Hills Arena in Tokyo. “I work very hard because I make these films for you,” Cruise said at the premiere night. “This is a very special film because the novel originated here in Japan. It’s a very unique love story, very unique characters, wonderful

humor. I can’t wait for you to see it. I’m very proud of it.” Liman also expressed his happiness over the warm welcome he received throughout his stay in Japan, “I love Japan and I love Tokyo. It’s my favorite city. I can’t thank you enough for making me feel like I’m home.” He admitted that it was a dream come true for him to work with Cruise. “Nobody works harder than Tom Cruise, nobody gives more, nobody cares more. From the first moment we started working on this movie, Tom would bring up the fact that we’re gonna be showing this movie back here in Japan and he was talking about this moment three years ago when we started.” “Tom is not only a brilliant actor, he’s a brilliant stuntman. He’s just the best. And there’s not one moment, not one frame on screen where it’s a double, and it’s always Tom Cruise. It’s never a digital Tom Cruise and it’s never stunt double. It was my dream to work with Tom Cruise. And now it is my dream to work with him again,” Liman said. Hiroshi Sakurazaka, the author of the novel, “All You Need Is Kill” in which

the film was based, made a surprise appearance on stage as well. His book was first published in 2004. It was later serialized in a weekly magazine as a manga adaptation. After speaking of their love and affection for Japan and their Japanese fans, Cruise, who turned 52 on July 3, got an unexpected pre-birthday treat from his legions of admirers when they sang a special rendition of “Happy Birthday” for him. “That is the best birthday present I’ve ever gotten! Thank you,” Cruise exclaimed. Cruise, who is known in Japan for his lenghty red carpet appearances, happily signed autographs and candidly posed for photos with ecstatic fans. The 39-year-old actress was stunning in her black Atelier Versace strapless dress and snappy black heels while Fanning looked lovely wearing an Alexander McQueen gown as they walked the red carpet and hit the stage. “Hello, Japan! Good evening! Thank you so much for coming out. We’re so excited to be here with all of you and we hope that you enjoy the film,” greeted Jolie who landed at Haneda Airport with her children Pax, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne, who made her acting debut in the film. A day before the premiere, the UN Special Envoy took her brood to Kiddyland in Shibuya and spent the evening eating shabushabu. “I always love Japan. I’ve been here many times and I look forward to the next time.” “This is my first time in Japan and I love it. It’s fantastic and you guys are so great and so sweet,” Fanning gushed. The teenage actress revealed she spent her first day in Tokyo buying souvenirs for her friends in Harajuku. The “Maleficent” co-stars obligingly signed autographs and posed for selfies with excited fans. During the photo call, Jolie and Fanning were all smiles as they posed together. “I think what is unique about this film is that it follows a character that we’ve known as a villain; that I think the lesson we all know is that for all of us who have felt different or bullied or less than, we feel that way sometimes. But then we have the choice to rise above and to change and also love others, we can do that. I think it’s a very strong message for all people, especially children,” Jolie who played the iconic Disney fairy queen told the host. Fanning, who took the role of Princess Aurora expressed her excitement about the film. “I’m so excited for you guys to the see movie because I love it and I think you will all love it too.” “I think that our film shows that love comes in all forms. he concert featured the REO Brothers – known as the “Beatles of the Philippines” – a band consisting of four brothers from Tacloban City. Also appearing at the concert were the Filcom Chorale and Japan-based artists Ms. Sayaka Akimoto, a young Japanese-Filipino actress who was formerly a member of the J-Pop idol group AKB48, and jazz singer Charito. In his message to the audience before the start of the concert, Philippine Ambassador to Japan Manuel M. Lopez said the story of the REO Brothers is one of inspiration, proving that despite the tragedies and adversities in the life of Leyteños, there is always hope. Aged 17 to 24, Reno, Ron Joseph, Raymart and Ralph Evasco Otic were left homeless by Yolanda. With only the clothes on their back, the guitars they saved from the typhoon, and faith in their talent, the brothers left Tacloban with members of their family to try their luck in Manila. They requested a bus company to allow them to ride a bus, with the promise of payment after arrival. Subsisting on

biscuits and candies, they made it to the capital after two days, where they lived in a small rented apartment of a sibling. In Manila, they impressed many with their raw musical talent. They captured the hearts of admiring audiences in the ABS-CBN Christmas TV Special at the Araneta Coliseum last December and in the Pinoy Relief benefit concert in Madison Garden, New York City last March, where they shared the stage with world-class Filipino artists. In the “Damo nga Salamat” concert in Tokyo, they wowed an audience of more than 400 who came not just from Tokyo but from other parts of Japan. From the moment they began their first song, they had the audience cheering and singing as they effortlessly sang Beatles hits such as “A Hard Day’s Night,” “All My Loving,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “Here Comes the Sun,” “Twist and Shout” as well as various medleys. The vibrancy of the REO Brothers performance moved the audience to dance along with the music. Representing different musical

genres, the other performers at the thanksgiving concert were likewise widely applauded. Charito, chairperson of the Tokyo Manila Jazz and Arts Festival, impressed many with her deep, soulful voice while the Filcom Chorale gave a spirited performance of classical Filipino music. Japanese-Filipino actress Sayaka Akimoto, who sang the popular Cebuano song “Matud Nila” touched the heart of kababayans when she expressed pride in her Philippine heritage. Her mother is a Cebuana. Following the concert, Ambassador Lopez hosted the National Day Reception at the Sun Pearl Arakawa attended by some 300 invited guests among them the ASEAN Diplomatic Corps, Japanese parliamentarians, Foreign Ministry officials, Japanese businessmen and leaders of the Filipino organizations. The Honorable Nobuteru Ishihara, Minister of the Environment, conveyed the greetings of the Japanese Government on the 116th Philippine Independence Day and offered a toast for the further enhancement of Philippines-Japan relations.

Angel Locsin is feeling high these days. It is because after almost a decade, the mysterious magical stone is officially back on her hand as Star Cinema and ABS-CBN tapped her to portray the iconic Pinoy superhero, “Darna,” this time on the big screen.

n an interview with ABS-CBN, the 29-year-old actress happily confirmed that she will again reprise the role of one of the most loved Pinoy superheroes of all time -- the same character that made Angel famous and changed her life for good years ago. “It’s official, nasa akin na ulit ang bato!” Angel exclaimed after confirming that she is set to do the movie remake of the said Mars Ravelo classic. “I’m very excited and ang laki ng respeto ko kay Darna. Iningatan ko si Darna noong ginagawa ko pa lang siya, nasa puso ko talaga siya,” she added. Angel, who recently visited Japan with boyfriend Luis Manzano, revealed that what makes her excited about her newest film is Star Cinema’s vision of setting the bar high in doing fantasy films by using the latest technology in special effects, guaranteeing a Hollywood-

caliber movie like “The Avengers.” Coming off the successful run of primetime drama series “The Legal Wife,” Angel beamed at the thought of what this ambitious project can do for the local filming industry. “Kasi dati sinasabi nila, pag fantasy movie, parang medyo nahihirapan tayo dahil sa budget at saka sa effects. Pero dito ngayon, all in talaga. Ibibigay namin sa inyo ang lahat,” she said. “Napakaganda noon para sa atin, ‘di ba, na meron tayong ipapakita, mga bagong talentong ipapakita na ipagmamalaki nating mga Pilipino sa buong mundo, na makakagawa kayo ng ganitong klaseng pelikula.” The movie will be directed by Erik Matti and Don Monteverde and slated for release next year. It can be recalled that Angel

made history when she first landed the role as a Kapuso star when one of its episodes garnered a 52% AGB rating, one of the highest in TV history. This time, Angel made a new record as the only actress who landed the Darna role both on TV and the movie since its first movie adaption in 1951. Several actresses were chosen to portray the said role in over six decades, most notable of which were Vilma Santos, Rio Locsin, Nanette Medved, Anjanette Abayari, and Marian Rivera. ABS-CBN got the contract rights to Darna and other Ravelo classics in 2013. GMA-7 used to own said rights. The story of Darna begins with a village girl named Narda who finds a small white stone, a tiny meteorite from outer space. Narda swallows the stone and shouts “Darna,” she becomes a mighty warrior ready to defend Earth from evil forces.

After the controversial exclusion in the national artist list by the Aquino government, Nora Aunor broke her silence about the issue saying she was hurt by what happened but is thankful for the show of support from family, friends, colleagues and fans who believe that she should be given the said recognition.

Aunor, a multi-awarded actress, was nominated as National Artist for Film in the list submitted by the National Commission for Culture and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. But after President Benigno Aquino III signed the proclamation order, Aunor’s name was excluded in the list. Declared national artists were Alice Reyes (dance), Francisco Coching (Posthumous, Visual Arts), Cirilo Bautista (Literature), Francisco Feliciano (Music), Ramon Santos (Music) and Jose Maria Zaragoza (Posthumous, Architecture, Design, and Allied Arts). According to President Aquino when he spoke to the media during the 67th anniversary ceremony of the Philippine Air Force in Clark Air Base, Pampanga, he rejected Aunor’s nomination because she was arrested and convicted for possession of shabu in the United States in 2005. Aunor’s lawyer, however, clarified that Aunor was not convicted for any drug-related case or any other crime in the said country. Although hurt, Aunor said that the outpouring of support by people would serve as an inspiration to continue to hone her craft and be an artist through and through. “Para sa akin po ay mas totoo at mas masarap ang karangalang ito dahil taos-pusong nanggagaling sa mga taong siyang dahilan kung bakit ako nagpapakabuti bilang isang artista—ang mga mamamayang Pilipino. “Ang pagsuportang ito ang lalong nagbibigay ng lakas ng loob sa akin, at ng walang kapantay na inspirasyon, upang lalo kong pagbutihin ang aking sining, upang lalo akong sipagin sa pagbabahagi ng kung anumang talento meron ako, at upang lalo ko pang pag-ibayuhin na maging isang mabuti at marangal mamamayang Pilipino. “Maraming salamat po at pagpalain po kayo ng Diyos.” The Order of the National Artist Award (Orden ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining) was established under Proclamation No. 1001 dated April 27, 1972 to give appropriate recognition and prestige to Filipinos who have distinguished themselves and made outstanding contributions to Philippine arts and letters. Boracay, Aklan Boracay Island, with its sugary white sand beaches and azure blue waters, is located on the northwestern tip of Panay, Western Visayas. The best of the island is the 4 km. White Beach, touted as the “finest beach in the world.” The water surrounding the island is shallow and the sand is finer and brighter than most beaches in the archipelago.

Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte In the Northern part of the Philippines is a beach reputed to have the longest contiguous white sand with mighty waves and strong winds that can compare to Hawaii. Wind and wave surfing are the outstanding activities that Pagudpud beach offers its very discriminating clientele. Not to mention the inviting views, clear blue waters, and white sand. Pagudpud promises its visitors a magnificent experience in a secluded paradise.

Mactan Island, Cebu Lying in the heart of Cebu is the island of Mactan. This tropical-island getaway endowed with a variety of colors – from its beach, hotels, resorts, nightlife, music, food, drinks – will guarantee to spice up every tourist.

and beach holiday. It is a small island on the Philippines southwest of the bigger island, Bohol. On the southern beach of Panglao there are several resorts that line up on the beach.

Camiguin Camiguin, which rhymes with “come again,” has been regarded as the most beautiful island in the country. Honda Bay, Palawan Framing the rugged and intriguing coastline of the capital of Palawan, Puerto Princesa City is Honda Bay. Its blue cool waters are dotted with islets that assure one of a pure-pleasure experience. From snorkeling in its clear waters to the more adventurous island hopping within its enclaves to simply having a picnic in the fine sand of its beach areas, Honda Bay is sure to leave a lasting impression on the visitor.

birds, El Nido is the source of one of the most delectable soups specially found in Chinese restaurants – the Nido Soup. This soup consists mainly of the birdnests that abound in the area. But El Nido is more than this. It prides itself in having the most beautiful seascapes in the province of Palawan, known as the country’s last frontier. Because of its utter splendor, it has also been called the island of the gods – heaven on earth, that is El Nido.

Pearl Farm, Davao Pearl Farm is located in the Samal Island off the coast of Davao City, Southern Philippines.
