It would have been a typical wedding proposal with a man getting down on his knee and promising forever to the love of his life, only, that man is none other than Dingdong Dantes and the one being asked is Marian Rivera – both GMA 7’s prized stars -- and the professing of love happened live in front of the cameras with thousands of viewers tuned in. 6

iewers knew it would just be a segment with Dingdong, 34, giving Marian a birthday tribute on her dance show aired on the Kapuso network. He started it by asking Marian to describe the photos flashing on the big monitor until a video of them in MGM Butterfly Pavillion was shown that Marian started shedding tears. “Isa lang ang gusto kong mangyari. Gusto kong ipagsigawan sa buong mundo kung gaano kita kamahal. Like what I said, I want to do it right this time.” “Yan [Marian’s nickname], whenever I pray, tuwing nagdarasal ako, alam mo, ito ang isa kong parating hinihiling—na sana bigyan Niya ako ng makakasama ko sa kalokohan, sa kalungkutan, sa kasiyahan. Isang taong makakasama kong mangarap. Isang taong alam kong ibibigay ko ang buong buhay ko sa kanya. “And right now, wala na akong mahihiling pang iba. There’s nothing else that I want and could ask for but settle down and have a family.” Dingdong got a small box from his pocket with a sparkling diamond ring in it and said: “I offer you this gift on your birthday, something that’s beyond
any material thing or tangible one. But I offer you myself, my love.” “Today, and all the days of my life, so please, Marian... will you be my wife?” He asked. To which Marian, uncontrollably crying, answered Dingdong with a passionate kiss. The studio audience was screaming in awe, thrilled to have witnessed something as beautiful and lovely as that, like a scene in a romantic film. Dingdong first proposed to Marian in August 2012 at the MGM Butterfly Pavillion in Macau with his family in tow. However, Dingdong felt that there were things he wasn’t able to say and do during that time so he decided to propose again with their family and friends and the public to witness it. The Royal Wedding Dubbed as local showbiz’s “Royal Wedding,” their union will take place on December 30 at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Cubao, Quezon City. The couple has decided to make the details of their wedding public because their love story was also an open book. Dingdong said that it’s
an important milestone to them and they want all of their family, friends and even the fans to be part of it. “Mayroon naman kaming option to really keep this private, but hindi namin made-deny iyong fact na we both started in GMA, nagkakilala kami dahil sa isang TV show, and lahat ng tao who supported us from the start until now… you were with us in all our milestones together,” Dingdong elaborated. The gorgeous twosome revealed that one of their sponsors would be Batangas Governor Vilma Santos. Marian’s best friends and “Amaya” co-stars Roxanne Barcelo and Ana Feleo will stand as her maids of honor while Dingdong chose his brother Angelo to be his best man. The wedding will be officiated by Fr. Aris Sison, rector of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. The pair met on the set of the Pinoy adaptation of “Marimar” in 2007 where both played the lead roles of Marimar and Sergio. Their real life romance blossomed after Dingdong broke up with singeractress Karylle in 2008. he press conference opened with a welcoming address from TIFF Director General Yasushi Shiina. He revealed that they will be featuring works by Hideaki Anno, one of Japan’s most prominent filmmakers. “We are going to be showcasing animation films in a way that only TIFF could do this year. That is the retrospective program, ‘The World of Hideaki Anno.’ We will continue to present those outstanding Japanese filmmakers to the world.” Anno made a special appearance at the press conference and announced the line-up of his retrospective program, which is around 50 films including his early works from his school days. “I am quite excited to show most of my previous films at this year’s TIFF. By looking back my past work, I find that my creation style has not been changed since I started my career. Even some of the films from my amateur ages constructed a part of my career, so I am thrilled to show my films from all genres. Come to think of it, everything is challenge, all of my works are unforgettable and good memories as a director don’t remain but hard experiences led to build my creativity.” Other announcements include the

up, but the opening and closing films have already been unveiled. The opening film will be Disney’s “Big Hero 6” animation while the Japanese live-action film “Parasyte” will close the fest. The Festival has five main sections: the Competition section in which 15 films from around the world will compete for the festival's top prize; the Special Screenings section featuring highly anticipated films; the Asian Future section showcasing up-and-coming Asian directors; the Japanese Cinema Splash section featuring Japanese independent films; and the World Focus section showcasing mustsee films that have received recognition at various international film festivals. This year’s Competition section features a new joint award established by TIFF and Japanese broadcasting channel WOWOW – the ‘WOWOW Viewer’s Choice Award’ offering a cash prize of US $10,000. The 27th TIFF will be held October 23-31 at Roppongi Hills, TOHO Cinemas Nihonbashi and other venues in Tokyo. TIFF’s affiliated multicontent market, TIFFCOM2014 (Japan Content Showcase 2014) will take place October 21-23 at the Grand Pacific Le Daiba in the Tokyo Bay area.

Ambassador Lopez Extends Assistance to ‘Philippine Nikkei-jin’
P
hilippine Ambassador Manuel M. Lopez offered his support and assistance to “Philippine Nikkei-jin” in their effort to gain recognition by the Japanese Government of their Japanese heritage being children of Filipino mothers and Japanese citizens who migrated to the Philippines before the Second World War. Nikkei-jin is a Japanese term for Japanese emigrants and their descendants who have established families and communities in foreign lands. In the case of the Philippines, a number of Japanese migrated from the late 19th century to 1945, many of them marrying Filipinos and raising families. Those children and their descendants are called “Philippine Nikkei-jin”. After WWII, the children of Nikkei families became orphans or were left behind in the
Philippines with their Filipino mothers. Ambassador Lopez met the six senior “Philippine Nikkei-jin” at the Embassy, namely, Henry Sato and his elder brother Ramon Sato, Hideo Miyake, Felixberto Fujiwara, Josefina Yagi and Victoria Takeshige. They were flown to Japan along with their caregivers or children with the assistance of the Philippine Nikkei-jin Legal Support Center (PNLSC), a nonstock, non-profit organization. The PNLSC helps the “Philippine Nikkeijin” reconnect with their heritage and identify as Japanese or Nikkei-jin by searching for and reuniting them with their fathers, if still alive, or their relatives in Japan as well as assisting them before administrative and judicial agencies of Japan to gain recognition of their family connections with Japanese parents or relatives. The PNLSC has the assistance of the Nippon Foundation
in
this humanitarian project. Ambassador Lopez offered the assistance of the Embassy for the “Philippine Nikkei-jin” to secure the appropriate travel documents so that they can fly to Japan to face the administrative and judicial agencies for recognition purposes. The six “Philippine Nikkei-jin” were using travel documents as they could not be issued Philippine passports in view of the unique legal circumstances of their birth and residence in the Philippines. The Ambassador suggested that the “Philippine Nikkei-jin”, through the assistance of the PNLSC, sign a petition seeking the assistance of the Philippines Government in establishing their Philippine citizenship having been born in the Philippines with Filipino mothers and Japanese fathers and have lived, worked and raised families in the Philippines.
Ambassador Lopez Shares Good News about the Philippines with Japan National Press Club

isit the Philippines and see a country greatly transformed and energized,” proudly proclaimed Philippine Ambassador to Japan Manuel M. Lopez as he addressed the prestigious Japan National Press Club (JNPC) last July 31. Ambassador Lopez was invited to appear before Japan’s premier press association for an “on-the-record

press conference”. The Ambassador took the occasion to discuss positive political and economic developments in the Philippines, the rise of the Philippines-Japan Strategic Partnership, as well as regional issues of mutual import to the Philippines and Japan. He also thanked Japan for its extensive support for peace and development in Mindanao, as well as the recovery of disaster-hit areas, most recently communities

affected by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in central Philippines. Ambassador Lopez joins world leaders, policymakers, VIPs and foreign dignitaries and ambassadors before Japan’s largest and most prestigious press organization. The JNPC welcomes about 200 speakers annually. Previous speakers from the Philippines include President Corazon C. Aquino (1986) and other Philippine presidents and cabinet secretaries.

ne of the three major beauty pageants in the world, the 2014 Miss International will be held at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Shinagawa, Tokyo on November 11. Beautiful and intelligent ladies from roughly 80 countries and regions of the world, including Mary Anne Bianca G. Guidotti representing the Philippines, will compete in this year’s pageant. From their arrival in Japan at the end of October until the final contest, they will actively take part in experiencing Japanese traditional culture as well as participate in various exchange events as the “Ambassadors of Beauty and Peace.” The top 5 and special award winners will be announced during the coronation night. Miss International 2013 Bea Rose Santiago will pass the crown to the next titleholder.

Philippine Festival 2014 Successfully Held at Ueno Park

he Philippine Festival 2014 was successfully held at the popular Ueno Park in Tokyo last August 30-31. The opening ceremony was graced by Philippine Ambassador to Japan Manuel M. Lopez and wife Madame Maria Teresa L. Lopez, Philippine Festival 2014 Chairperson Jenavilla Bibal Shigemizu, Japanese AmbassadorDesignate to the Philippines Kazuhide Ishikawa and House of Representatives and Japan-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship League (JPPFL) Members Yukio Ubukata, Kensuke Miyazaki and Masayoshi Nataniya. Filipino celebrities like Gerald Anderson, Richard Poon, Imelda Papin, Marlene dela Pena, Blakdyak, MMJ Magno Brothers, Eric Nicolas, Sunshine Garcia and Aiko Climaco entertained the crowd. Aljur Abrenica was also seen at the event. The two-day Festival provided visitors plenty of opportunities to appreciate Philippine music, dance, entertainment, games, fashion, food, products and services. Philippine Festival 2014 was organized by the Filipino Community in Japan.

Who hasn’t heard of the heritage city of Vigan in Ilocos Sur and in Ilocos Norte, the La Paz sand dunes, Paoay Church or the windmills of Bangui? Visitors to these two Ilocano regions in Northern Luzon will likely find themselves bemused, by the interesting contrast in the tourism attractions.
T
he southern vista in Vigan’s Spanish-era settlement gives visitors a somber nostalgic trip down memory lane while the northern exposure in Paoay and Laoag, invites visitors to an entirely distinct experience earthy and exhilarating in La Paz and Burgos, and modern-scientific in Bangui. The easier and faster way to arrive in Ilocos is to take a commercial flight to and from Laoag, by one of the country’s local airlines. Once settled in Laoag, the road travel in between Sur and Norte is convenient given the good quality of road infrastructure. The distance between Vigan and Bangui is 140 kilometers, about 4 hours drive. For those who are more attuned to the excitement offered by roadtrips, your Ilocos journey could begin in the southern side, in Vigan, a 7-8 hour drive from Southern Manila area. The rural vista as one passes through the Pangasinan-La Union corridor is quite interesting and adds flavor to your countryside travel. Following are some of the “must experience” in your Ilocandia visit: Historic Ambience of Vigan Vigan

established in the 16th century by the Spanish and served as key a trading post, has been declared by the UNESCO as a world heritage site. The UNESCO cites as follows: “Vigan is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia. Its architecture reflects the coming together of cultural elements from elsewhere in the Philippines, China, and Europe, resulting in a culture and townscape that have no parallel anywhere in East and South-East Asia.” [http:// whc.unesco.org/en/list/502]. Like many of the typical Spanish towns in early Philippine history, Vigan’s notable landmarks are all easy to find in virtually “one square.” A walk or a calesa ride around the city’s center points, Plazas Burgos and Salcedo will lead one to St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Municipal Hall, and the hard-to-miss, Calle Crisologo, where the reasonably well-preserved 187 Spanish-era homes, some now turned into museums or commercial establishments, abound. The old and new appear to be harmoniously fused into one community here. Calle Crisologo and its adjacent streets teem with historical prominence; from the Syquia Mansion, (i.e., the home of 6th First Lady Doña Alicia Quirino, the Crisologo Museum
(i.e, home of Don Mena Crisologo, a delegate to the Malolos Congress, the first provincial governor), and the Padre Burgos Museum, which are also old homes that highlight the lives of important people in Philippine history. La Paz’s Exhilarating Sand Dunes An almost eerie scream is heard as soon as the all terrain vehicle (an outfitted jeep for up to four standing passengers) soars off from one of the steepest cliffs (called Devil’s Drop) in La Paz’s sand dunes. For those that bravely take the challenge, the gut wrenching sensation is unmistakable and the exhilaration unforgettable, as the ATV glides, rolls, twists, and turns around the combined roller coaster-like obstacle course of sand and rocky formations while also beguiling you with the beautiful coastal environ. At one hilly but smooth portion of the dunes, you can channel your surfing dreams by sand boarding, without fear of drowning; well, maybe just a bit of risk of toppling over into hot powdery sand and ingesting some too. There are several entry points to the sand dunes, managed by local adventure organizations and all offer the same promise to fulfill your adventurous spirit. Paoay’s Historical Attractions When in Paoay, places of interest are:
• The Church of St. Augustine, which is more popularly known as the Paoay Church – a Baroque-styled UNESCO declared world heritage site that is probably one of the most picture-perfect churches in the country. • The so-called Malacañang of the North, which used to be the official residence of the Marcos family - now a museum of sorts for family and political memorabilia, a sprawling Spanish-style structure is set amidst lush foliage and has an imposing view of the serene Paoay Lake. Rocky Wonders of Burgos The natural art works, collectively known as the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation, are located on the rocky coast of Burgos, Ilocos Norte. These limestone formations, ranging in color from dirty to creamy white, had been sculpted over time into their present form by different oceanic and weather forces. Burgos, a fifth class municipality is the most northwestern town on the island of Luzon and is named after the martyred priest Fr. José Burgos (of GOMBURZA). Kapurpurawan is the Ilocano word for kaputi-putian or “whiteness” in Tagalog. Wind Farm of Ilocos – Burgos and Bangui In 1996, a wind resource study
showed that many areas in the country, including Bangui and Burgos towns in Ilocos Norte, are suited for generating wind power. Over a decade later, the country’s first wind farm was completed in 2008 and has since contributed to the electricity supply in the Luzon Island. Found in Bangui, the wind farm produces 33 megawatts of power from the 20 wind turbines/towers that are rhythmically arranged on a single row along a ninekilometer stretch in the shoreline off Bangui Bay, facing the South China Sea. These majestic modern structures outline a graceful arc that mirrors the coastline of the Bay and provides an awesome foreground for sunset watching. The second wind farm in the country is found in the same area where the Kapurpurawan rock formations are. Set along the hilly entrance to the area and the coastline, the wind turbines/ towers, which are expected to produce 87 megawatts of power for Luzon by 2016, provide a thrilling view that is quite unparalleled. Nature and technology altogether in one canvass. From a developmental perspective, the wind farms of Ilocos demonstrate what the power of “dreaming large” can do. Nature’s essential powers harnessed by technology, combined with the right attitude and determination among the stakeholders, make an effective recipe for development.

Trains like the Philippines’ Metro Rail Transit (MRT) system should be the fastest, most efficient and most convenient way to commute from one place to another at any time of day. However, riding the MRT these past few months have been a challenge to more or less than 500,000 passengers a day who have to contend with long queues, delays, lack of safety standards and other concerns.
L
ast August, 39 passengers were injured as one of the trains overshot the EDSA-Taft Station tracks in Pasay City and crashed through its barrier and hit a lamp post. It was later revealed that the cause of the accident was the coupler attached between two trains broke down. It was also reported this September that an MRT train operated with one of its doors open while its coach were full of passengers from Guadalupe station to Boni station. Also, passengers have to wait in line for an hour or so before they can get in the train especially during rush hours. But with all these problems, many passengers still choose to ride the MRT because it is much cheaper (Php11-Php15/ticket depending on destination) compared when riding a bus (Php20-up) or an FX (Php25-up) that most of the times are caught up in horrible traffic. According to Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), they are working hard to improve the MRT system and in fact has purchased 48 coaches that will arrive in the country from August 2015 to 2017. They are also in the process of upgrading the signaling system and other facilities. They also asked the Senate to allot Php6.6 billion fund for the MRT for 2015 – Php1.92 billion for operation and

maintenance and Php4.66 billion for the subsidy. The government is being criticized about this and a number of netizens have even launched the #MRTChallenge where they called on some politicians to ride the MRT to personally know the commuter’s problems. Senator Grace Poe did the challenge during rush hour on a Friday from North Avenue Station to Taft Station in preparation for the Senate investigation regarding the matter. Presidential spokespersons Abigail Valte and Edwin Lacierda also took the challenge. The sad thing about our public transport system is that it is being managed by public officials who don’t even commute every single day of their lives; they are in the comforts of chauffeur-driven cars, therefore, a lesser understanding on the plight of the poor who are the daily commuters. It is high time that the government find a perfect solution to the railroad system because if Manila traffic is incurable, making railroad system better should be the next best option.
