If you’ve traveled down Parkway Avenue in a car, walked down the sidewalk, or taken a bike along the Root River Trail, you’ve probably noticed that there’s a new vibrant shade of pink decorating the historic downtown. Ron and Kathy Kasten have now opened Another Time Ice Cream Parlor and Chocolates at 100 Parkway Avenue North bordering the trail. The location of Another Time is the former location of River Trail Picnic Basket. Behind every new business venture, there’s usually a story to be told. This tradition holds true with the Kasten family’s new ice cream shop in Lanesboro. Ron and Kathy both come from the local area, specifically the region around Spring Valley, Minnesota. After graduating high school, college, and getting married, both Ron and Kathy found themselves working in the Twin Cities corporate world watching their lives unfold in front of them as they quickly climbed the corporate ladder. About five years into her business career, Kathy decided it was time for a change from her routine. She left her company life behind, but a short time later found a love for alpacas. She even turned to alpaca farming for about seven years, beginning in 2005. After seven years of taking great care of her herd, the Kasten’s fate led them to another business switch which brought them to small town Lanesboro in 2012. However, Ron still balances his corporate job along with Another Time

At our company, every day we ask ourselves what we can do better. With our very own newspaper website, we have known for quite some time that we had a tremendous opportunity for improvement. This past week, we had a soft launch of the new and improved fillmorecountyjournal.com. Our sister company, SMG Web Design, helped us establish a design and functionality that we felt was lacking with the current design. We identified a list of things that a great news website should have for a positive end-user experience. And, here’s what we came up with. 1. First and foremost, just like with our print edition, access to

fillmorecountyjournal.com will remain free. No need to keep track of a username and password. Many newspapers are locking down their news content or providing stripped down content online only to encourage readers to look for the full story in the print edition. Our local news is provided free of charge in print and online. 2. Some newspapers provide their content in a PDF format so visitors can flip through the pages online just like a regular newspaper. But, most of those newspapers charge a fee for access to that format. If you check out our Electronic Edition section of the new site, you’ll have access to every newspaper we’ve published since this newspaper started. Another Time was a step into the unknown back in May, but the couple has familiarized themselves with the food service world. It’s one of the Kasten’s goals to carry as much original Minnesota products as possible. The shop still carries the famous Bridgeman’s ice cream line (a Minnesota original). They also supply their customers with local milk from Kapper’s dairy. Looking for soda? Another Time carries a variety of the Spring Grove soda options. In addition, the new Lanesboro business now carries chocolates from both Minnesota and Virginia. And if you’re looking for an excep-

tional cup of coffee or want to spice up your world of caffeine, you will want to try a specialty espresso drink made with real Caribou coffee. The Kastens see themselves and their business more than just a name for customer retail. They’re also striving to help the community. Right before the process to acquire a business in Lanesboro began, they decided to investigate the town. Lanesboro City Council hears from the Chamber By Jade Sexton Julie Charlebois, representing the Lanesboro Chamber of Commerce, informed the council about the upcoming Lanesboro Weed-Up at the July 2 council meeting. “With the really warm spring, and being short of funds and no real clarity of who is responsible, we came up with a good idea,” said Charlebois. “We’re really excited about it.” On July 18 from 6:30-8pm, people are getting together to pull weeds around town, and Riverside on the Root will be giving out drink coupons for afterward. Charlebois also spoke about noise ordinance issues, especially concerning semis, motorcycles and trucks that go through downtown. The council approved Vickerman to contact the Department of Transportation to request a speed study in order to potentially lower the speed limit on Parkway. Council member Ceil Allen said that Frank Wright recently took a tour of frac mines and presented to the Chamber. The Chamber is writing a letter with their concerns about the frac mining, mostly concerns about the high amount of traffic on the roads. Allen said that Wright said there could be up to 250 trucks a day on the roads that are deliver-

ing for the mines. “I think we should have a long, hard think about the impact this will have on our streets, and write our own letter of concern,” suggested Allen. The next frac committee meeting will be on July 18, and after that there will be a public hearing. There was some discussion about waiting until the public hearing. Allen said if the council has concerns they should express them now, before they amend the ordinance. She felt the city should support whatever the Chamber is doing. She will be attending the meeting on July 18. Charlebois said one of the biggest concerns of the Chamber is the fact that a bike trail goes through town, and the truck traffic could be dangerous for visitors. Heritage Preservation Commission Vickerman said the HPC program on June 18 regarding the design guidelines had a big turnout and went very well. She added that Barb Johnson received a scholarship to attend the National HPC in Norfolk, Virginia in July. Vickerman asked for the city to cover an initial expense of $250 for Sara Peterson to photograph several buildings in town, as they Shih Tzu

are working on expanding the historic district. They are applying for some legacy grants to help in this project. EDA Council member Keith Eide said the Lanesboro EDA (Economic Development Authority) heard from Chris Gastby about a business program that helps businesses that are close to going out of business stay open. The businesses must fill out an application for $150. Other Business Council member Ceil Allen said the library exceeded their circulation goals in June, and the summer reading programs were very successful. Vickerman said the shelter near the bathhouse is completed and is now handicapped accessible. They also got some accessible picnic tables and are working on getting grants for an accessible bathhouse. The council approved the following items: *The audit as presented at the June meeting *The lease with AT&T for the cell phone tower *The garbage contract with Harter’s *$25 a month cell phone stipend for City Clerk Michelle Vrieze *The contract with Associated Bank *The resolution adopting policies for the small cities grants * Street closure for the Buffalo Bill Days street dance *Permit for the ATVs during Buffalo Bill Days There will be a joint meeting with the City Council and the EDA on July 11 to discuss the Lanesboro 20/20 vision for the future.

Search continues for County Engineer By Karen Reisner Kristina Kohn, Human Services, reported at the county board’s July 3 meeting that the lead candidate for county engineer had declined the county’s offer. The county has been searching for a replacement for retiring County Engineer John Grindeland who is leaving later this year. There was some discussion of ways to broaden the search for candidates. Chairman Tom Kaase said they started the process early and they still have time. Kohn will look into the cost of advertising in larger papers including the Star Tribune. SEMMCHRA Early in 2012, Southeast Minnesota Multi-Housing Redevelopment Authority (SEMMCHRA) asked counties including Fillmore for reimbursement

of administrative shortfalls. Section 8 housing vouchers, a federally funded program, is administered by SEMMCHRA. Section 8 vouchers allow qualified, low income residents to have reduced rental rates. Joe Wheeler, SEMMCHRA, notified the county that Housing and Urban Development (HUD) had notified them that the vouchers were SEMMCHRA’s. Commissioners have questioned why the Section 8 vouchers couldn’t be administered by Semcac, Bluff Country Housing Redevelopment Authority (BCHRA), as they may already work with eligible clients. Semcac’s staff provides administration for BCHRA. Wheeler noted there is a freeze on issuing vouchers because of

the current economy, adding reserves will be used in 2013. Wheeler makes it clear that a county will not receive vouchers (if they become available), if they are not part of the Joint Powers. Wheeler wants to meet with the county board or schedule a joint board meeting to discuss the HUD letter, plans for 2013, and what the organization could look like with more members. County Coordinator Karen Brown said BCHRA is not certified for the Section 8 vouchers. The overall number of Section 8 vouchers is down. Kaase who is on the BCHRA board said they meet on the next Monday and he will report back at the next county board meeting on Tuesday. Commissioner Duane Bakke said he wasn’t interested in being part of the Joint Powers, adding this isn’t that big of program with relatively few receiving assistance in the county. Commissioner Chuck Amunrud said it isn’t a “real” Joint Powers, as the group doesn’t have any power to replace the director. He added he doesn’t think they should get involved in the Joint Powers. No action was taken. Other Business In Brief •The board voted to utilize a smaller group or committee for the labor agreement negotiation process.The local 49ers had requested the change to discuss

their health insurance. Bakke noted many counties don’t do initial labor negotiations with the full board, adding this should speed up the process. •Approval was given for overnight stays for two nights next week for Jon Martin, Sanitation. He said the Minnesota PCA had put out feelers for help in collecting household hazardous waste in Duluth. Martin noted Winona County will send a couple people next week also. He said they had received a lot of outside help during the Rushford flood. •A partial payment of $3,500 was approved for Kane and Johnson for architectural services on the Highway Administration Building remodel. The firm has issued its preliminary report. •A payment of $1,650.30 was approved for attorney Matthew

Brown noted the judge ruled in the county’s favor. •The purchase of a wireless microphone from Dascom for $1,353.00 was approved. The wireless hand held microphone will be used in public hearings. •The board made its final offer for the five year renewal of lease space on the county’s tower. The state had requested a renewal of its license with the county for antenna space on the tower in Preston. The county had asked for $1,500 per year which was an increase from the last five year agreement ($1,200 per year.) The state proposed to stay at the $1,200 figure. The board approved a take it or leave it offer of $1,300.

By Yvonne Nyenhuis In my twenties, I worked as an Embroidery Designer in Philadelphia. My dear friend and mentor, Ronald Levy, and I frequently had lunch together in Fairmont Park. One day we were sitting in the sun enjoying our corned beef sandwiches and pickles, when a flock of birds settled in front of us pecking at chunks of dry rolls that had been thrown on the Yvonne ground. Out Nyenhuis of nowhere a witch-like figure, scrawny and bent over, covered in black, emerged. She pulled a crumpled brown paper bag from the folds of her gar-

ments, scooped the rolls into her bag, and swiftly disappeared. No one should have to take dry chunks of bread from the birds in order to survive! Fast-forward to nineteen-sixty-seven. I’m married, living in an apartment in Minneapolis with my husband, Glenn, and our eighteen-month-old son, Gordon. Once a week I’d pile our laundry into the stroller and taking Gordon’s hand, walk to the Laundromat on Hennepin Avenue. One morning we walked over the Hennepin Bridge. I found myself looking down to the railroad tracks below where there was a large cement platform. I wondered at first what all the people were doing. They huddled in twos and threes. Some walked aimlessly in the area. They were shabbily dressed, with slumped

shoulders looking down at the ground. Then it hit me. These people are homeless! The awful reality swept over me. When you don’t have a job there is no place to go. When night comes, where do you sleep? What do you eat? For forty years the middle class has been losing ground and poverty has increased. The “poor” did not cause the “recession,” yet Republicans in Congress tell us that “entitlements” are the problem. We must cut food stamps, school lunches, Head Start and Planned Parenthood. Meanwhile they insist we should continue subsidies to Corporations and tax cuts for the rich. It is not “Big Government” we need to fear. Corporations have taken over our lives! The drive to “repeal Obama Care” has been carefully orchestrated by Health Insurance companies. The Media is fed by a spring of lies and misinformation. Health Care is

a business motivated by profit. Drug companies’ main objective is not “healing the sick,” it is selling drugs! Monsanto and Cargill engineer our food for “appearance and durability.” We are left to wonder how much nutrition is in the food we eat. Corporations put profit ahead of the health and welfare of workers and desecrate the environment. (We must get rid of the E.P.A. All those silly regulations are cutting into our profits. We must defund OSHA. Safety of workers? Not our responsibility!) They have money and influence but we have “the vote.” Presently sinister forces are at work to suppress the vote, threatening the survival of our Democracy! In the pursuit of “smaller government,” Republicans have made huge cuts in money allocated to States to pay salaries for public workers. We NEED police, firefighters and teachers.

Challenging corporate abuse of power brings citizens together RUSHFORD, Minn. — Over 100 farmers, small business owners and other rural residents came together in Rushford last night at a Land Stewardship Project (LSP) meeting to discuss how excessive corporate power negatively affects almost every aspect of their lives, from access to affordable health care to the kinds of seeds that are planted. “Every place we turn, it’s corporate power that is in the way of making our communities better,” LSP associate director Mark Schultz told the crowd. “We are organizing rural people to stand up to corporate power so we can make positive change in our lives, in our communities and on the land.” Taylor Peterson, a crop and livestock farmer from Peterson, explained how he sees the frac sand mining industry in southeast Minnesota as an immediate example of corporate interests Editorial Cartoon

exploiting rural communities. He shared the negative impact this kind of “boom-and-bust” corporate-backed industry could have on his young family and his community. “So much is at stake not just for me, but for my kids,” said Peterson. “The damage these corporate-backed mines will have on our land, environment and roads is extraordinary— what will be left in our community once the mines close and the corporations move on?” LSP policy organizer Bobby King explained how rural Minnesotans have the power at the township level to stop and restrict unwanted development, like frac sand mines, from coming into their communities. “By organizing together, neighbors can win passage of township ordinances that will keep this harmful development out of their communities,” said

King. Participants in the meeting pledged to take several steps in coming months to fight corporate power in rural Minnesota. Among other things, many people committed to organizing with friends and neighbors at the township level to win policies that will prevent corporatebacked frac sand mines from coming into their rural communities. “None of this happens without people taking action together,” Schultz said. “Corporate power has gone too far, and the only way to diminish their power is to organize together to build our power as people.” The Minnesota-based Land Stewardship Project, founded in 1982, is a grassroots organization focused on food communities, farmer training and community organizing that promotes healthy land and justice

for all. It has offices in the Minnesota communities of Lewiston, Montevideo and South Minneapolis.

If they are hired, they will be able to afford to buy houses and cars. They will increase the need for goods and services in the private sector. Banks will lend to new businesses because a market is created. They will pay taxes, increasing government revenues, which will allow us to start paying off the deficit. When we provide upward mobility for the poor and the middle class, we all benefit, including the rich! On a trip to England I stood with a friend on the shore of a harbor looking over the town of Wivenhoe. I was surprised that there was no water. The boats were sitting moored to the muddy bottom. It was explained to me that twice a day there was a tide of water pouring in from the North Sea: that “The Rising Tide Raised All Boats!”

Relaying for me and you By Gabby Gatzke Cancer. The word you never want to hear. The reality is that most people will hear it whether it’s their own diagnosis or that of a loved one. Fillmore County residents have been helping fight cancer for more than 15 years through an event called Relay For Life. Relay For Life is an event that was started by the American Cancer Society. This year, Fillmore County’s Relay For Life will be held at the Fillmore County Fairgrounds in Preston for the second year in a row. Next year it will move on to Harmony, where

Fillmore County’s Relay For Life first began. On July 13th, people from all over Fillmore County and beyond will come together for a nightlong event to raise awareness in hopes of creating more birthdays and getting rid of that nasty word that no one wants to hear. Close to 30 teams have fundraised year round and will finally celebrate their hard work on July 13. The evening will begin at 4:00pm with a Survivor Tea. All survivors and caregivers of those cancer survivors are invited to attend. There

The beginning of the emotional events begins with the survivor’s lap at 6:00pm where all cancer survivors and caregivers take the first lap around the walking track lined with luminary bags that are in honor or in memory of those affected by cancer.

Paul Schmidt of Preston and friends will be playing on stage from 6:15-8:15pm. They will end their gig with the emotionally moving Balloon Release at 8:15pm, where people send off messages to those lost due to cancer. The lighting of the hundreds of luminary bags begins at 8:30pm. This is truly the most moving experience of the evening. Other things to participate in throughout the evening are Bingo, Texas Hold ‘em, Community Campfire, Zumba, Bingo and more! Entertainment will continue throughout the evening with Ginny and the Right Combination and

the Outback Band. There will also be a dedication video dedicated to those who have survived and those who have passed away from cancer. And you can even enjoy an outdoor movie thanks to the Jem Theater of Harmony. This event could not take place without all the volunteers, teams, local businesses and the American Cancer Society. Last year, $123,000 was raised and this year the planning committee is hoping for even more! We have organized the news at fillmorecountyjournal.com in two ways: categorical and geographical. People tend to be most interested in what affects them where they live. They want to know what’s happening at their local city council meetings and school board meetings. As you drag your mouse across the top horizontal navigation bar of cities, you’ll notice a menu drop down a list of all options for each city in Fillmore County. You can cut to the chase and find out everything going on in your community. In addition, on the left vertical navigation bar you’ll notice a long list of categories. So, maybe you don’t want to narrow your search to a specific community. If you want to search for all birth notices, engagements, weddings, and military service announcements, regardless of geography, you can click on “Special Announcements” and find everything you need. 4. OK, this is probably my favorite feature of the site. SMG Web Design worked diligently to identify the best way to tackle this request, and they executed my request just the way I envisioned it would work. So, you live in Rushford, and the Fillmore County Journal covers your city

At the bottom of any page of the new website, you will find an option under “Need more FCJ?” referenced as “Email Newsletter.” When you click on this option, you’ll see a list of all categories on the new site and you’ll see a list of all cities in Fillmore County. Each category and city combination you select to have e-mailed to you will provide you with the special privilege of being the first to know when a story is posted to the site in that category and city. So, once we post an article about what happened at the recent Rushford city council meeting, you will immediately receive an e-mail with a link to that story. This feature puts you in the driver’s seat to decide what you want to be updated on as the content becomes immediately available. 5. Since we are on the subject of receiving updated content as articles are posted in a particular category and city (referenced above), this is the perfect time to mention one of our goals in 2012 with the new website. As news happens throughout the week, we will be posting fresh content on a daily basis. Each day that you check fillmorecountyjournal. com, you will find something new. In 2011, we calculated well over 1,900 local articles, photos and videos posted to the old site. In 2012, we will be providing even more news and information every day. If the Preston City Council made an important decision last night, you’ll see that story on fill-

morecountyjournal.com today. 6. Another feature on news websites that drives me nuts is when they require users to login with a username and password to be eligible to post comments. This is often used as a ploy to spy on users to track IP addresses. Check out some other local news sites and you’ll see what I mean. My thoughts are to provide the opportunity for people to post online comments without that requirement. So, feel free to post comments on stories appearing on the new fillmorecountyjournal.com, and don’t worry about us tracking your whereabouts. We’re not “big brother.” I will say that I am responsible for preventing libel in print and online, so we will filter out any online comments that cross that line. And, with all online comments, you can look for the 10 most recently posted comments to appear as a scrolling ticker near the top of the new website to let readers know about what articles are prompting the most response. 7. In the footer of the site, under “Need more FCJ?” you’ll find links to our Facebook page, Youtube channel and the option of tapping into fresh content from each page of the new site with the rss feed option. 8. More locally generated videos. We recognize that Youtube.com is the second most used search engine in the world, right behind Google, and so we know our Internet users are seeking more interactive video. For example, on our new website there’s a video

OK, here’s another fantastic opportunity to create interaction with our readers that will come in handy on a regular basis. With the wonderful matrix of categories and cities, we have the option of posting reader polls based on the specific interests of each section of the site. Whether voting on candidates for elections, school bond referendums or decisions being made at civic meetings on a regular basis, our new reader polls will present more opportunities to create interaction with the communities we serve. 10. Citizen journalism has become a buzz phrase in the newspaper industry, often times never executed very well at all. We will be offering this option to the community for purposes not often shared by other newspapers. Here’s how it might work. If your church would like to have a citizen journalism access level to the new site, you could post articles, events, photos and videos in the Faith & Worship section about your church. With your own username and password,

you would be allowed access to the back end of our newspaper website. This gives our site users the opportunity to update the new site with their own content. Maybe you would just like to have a blog to be shared with our online community. We can do that. A citizen journalism access level posses tremendous opportunities. Obituaries Ilene Mildred Anderson Ilene Mildred Anderson, 89, of Chatfield, died Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester. Ilene Mildred Soiney was born May 16, 1923, in Harmony, to Lawrence Soiney and Matilda (Jacobson) Soiney. She attended Harmony and Whalan Schools. She married Ervin O. Anderson in 1943 in Whalan. Ervin passed away in 1968. Ilene was a nurses aide at the Lanesboro and Preston Care Centers. She worked at Saint Marys Hospital as a housekeeper and dietary aide, and cleaned houses for Doctors in Rochester for many years. Ilene was a member of Whalan Lutheran Church and the Erickson-Rose Legion Auxiliary Post 637. She enjoyed spending time with her family, making mission quilts and day trips with friends. She is survived by four daughters, Carole Johnson of Chatfield, Linda (Larry) Wrolstad of Kenyon, Donna (Francis) Novotny of Chatfield and Cindy (Ole) Bothun of Chatfield; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bette (Milton) Eide of Rushford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin, a daughter, Sharon, three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 7, 2012, at the Whalan Lutheran Church, in Whalan, with Rev. Patricia Hinkie officiating. Burial was in the Whalan Cemetery. Everyone who came in contact with Ilene loved her. She has left a legacy of wonderful memories for her family and friends. Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield was in charge of arrangements.

Audrey Engrav Audrey I. Engrav, 96, of Rushford, Minn. died on Thursday, December 29, 2011, at Valley View Healthcare and Rehab Center in Houston. Audrey was born on June 13, 1915, in Houston, Minn. to Emil and Jane (Hostvet) Thronson. She was raised in Houston where she attended school. On January 14, 1934, she married James M. Engrav. The couple moved to Rushford, Minn. Audrey worked as a nurs’s’ aid for twenty years at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford. Audrey was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church where she was an active circle member. She also served as a Cub Scout Den Mother. In her spare time Audrey enjoyed: knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, crafts, traveling, shopping, holidays, cooking, spending time with her family and talking about the “Good Ole Days”. Audrey is survived by two children: Paul (Jeanneen) Engrav of Rushford and Jane (Wayne) Schuster of Brownton, Minn.; grandchildren: Timothy (Kris) Engrav, Kristina (Justin) Crowder, Alison Schuster, Oliver Schuster and Jillian Schuster; great-grandchildren: Abby, Alex, Caleb, Eli and Drake; sisters: Lyla Cruze, Marge Poppe and Norma Muenkel; and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; and brothers, Donald and Daniel Thronson. There was a memorial service, celebrating Audrey’s life on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Rushford Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Rushford Lutheran Church or Valley View Healthcare and Rehab Center.

“Protest!” will showcase songs of the 1960s in this month’s “Over the Back Fence” Community Variety Show A full cast singing “Marching Up To Freedom Land” a capella will open this month’s “Over the Back Fence” community variety show. “Protest!” is the theme, and the show will feature a variety of music and historical and cultural references from the 1960s. Also featured will be Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and Elvis Presley’s interpretation of that speech, “If I Can Dream,” sung by Rick Nance. Host Damon Prestemon will welcome the Rutabaga Brothers onstage throughout the show, for numbers including “Times They are A-Changin’” (featuring soloist Nick Danielson) and the audience sing-along and show closer “We Shall Overcome.” Barbara Benson Keith and the Barbettes will sing “Sufferin Suffrage,” and Bob Petrillo will perform a song he was actually arrested for singing in the 1960s: “Eve of Destruction.” In sponsor interviews, we’ll learn about Riverside on the Root Restaurant & Root River Outfitters, Church Hill School Condominiums, and Niagara Cave. Fillmore County Court Report On July 2, 2012, Jerome Sondre Halvorson, Jr., 47 of Lanesboro, made a first appearance before Judge Robert Benson at the Fillmore County Courthouse. Halvorson faced charges for three counts of Financial Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult, which has a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail, $20,000, or both. He was also charged with two counts of Theft, and two counts of Theft by Swindle. A bank called police with concerns about Halvorson’s mother’s account. His mother lives in a nursing home. Halvorson allegedly used money from her bank accounts at casinos in Arizona and Minnesota, as well as at ATMs and Kwik Trips in the area, totaling approximately $19,403.99. Halvorson was released on his own recognizance, with $20,000 unconditional bail. His next appearance is July 16, 2012. Jesse Cole Julian, 18 of Chatfield, appeared before Judge Benson on July 3, 2012. He was charged with Drugs in the 5th Degree possession, not a small amount of marijuana, and Drugs in the 5th Degree sale, both with

a maximum penalty of five years in jail, $10,000 or both. He was also charged with drugs, possession/sale of a small amount of marijuana, and paraphernalia, both with have a maximum penalty of a $300 fine. The charges stem from an incident in which police heard about a truck going into a ditch. When they arrived, the truck was gone, but they then pulled over a truck that had mud on it and was damaged. Police could allegedly smell marijuana coming from the vehicle, in which Julian was a passenger. They found marijuana in the vehicle that allegedly belonged to Julian, as well as a pipe. Julian was given $2,000 conditional bail and $10,000 unconditional. He must not have any contact with co-defendants or drug users, and must submit to drug testing weekly. His next court appearance is July 9, 2012.

Space Commando and other odd hobbies at DreamAcres Farm The Dreamery Rural Arts Initiative on DreamAcres Farm welcomes David Harris and his one-man, acrobatic, autobiographical show “Space Commando and Other Odd Hobbies” on Friday, July 13 at 8:30pm. This is the second of three shows in the Play! in the Barn Series funded in part by a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council’s Legacy allocation from the Minnesota State Legislature. Tickets are $12 or “pay what you can.” At the age of 14, David Harris knew exactly what he wanted to be, a professional yo-yo player. This dream led to a 20-year pursuit of odd hobbies; seemingly impossible stunts with folding chairs, shopping bag dancing, juggling feats, and inspired paddleball moves. Along this unexpected, hilarious, and often embarrassing journey, David finds amazing yo-yo masters, paddleball kings, and wedding rings. Also featured in the show is drummer Sam Mistry, a 15 year old student at the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists and a resident of the Midway area of St. Paul. David Harris has amazed and amused audiences with his physical comedy shows. Using a variety of unconventional props such as hand trucks, sheets of paper, bicycle wheels, and buckets, David blends acrobatics, comedy, and virtuosic object manipulation. He graduated from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks with a degree in English. David frequently performs in Minnesota at venues such as Dreamland Arts, The Red Eye, The Ritz Theater, Bryant Lake Bowl, and Jon Hassler Theater. He has performed

at libraries, schools, fairs, corporate events, comedy clubs, variety shows, cabarets, and in dozens of theatrical productions. His shows include The David Harris Show (with magician David J. Harris), Everything Must Go (with Katie Kaufmann), Delivery Guy, The Paper Mover, BOOKcrobatics, and What I Want to Be When I Grow Up! Friday nights at DreamAcres include wood-fired pizza from 5-8pm. Pizzas are made using the freshest seasonal vegetables on the farm, a sourdough crust, and Minnesota and Wisconsin cheeses. The Resplendent Raspberry I love raspberries, not only for their sumptuous flavor, but also because I have a history with this lovely berry. I grew up in Hopkins, Minnesota, a suburb of the Twin Cities, known then as the Raspberry Capital. Raspberry farms proliferated on the outskirts of Hopkins, supplying an abundance of the delicious crop to the area, and for the yearly Raspberry Festival, our little claim to fame. As a 10-year-old, I decided to fol-

low in my brother’s footsteps and pick at a raspberry farm. I’d earn a little money and show how responsible I was, an attribute needed to pass one of my dads tests to go swimming with friends at Shady Oak Lake, attended by life guards but no parents. If I remember correctly, we made the huge sum of five cents a quart, an amount that added up during my two-week stint. Remember, a candy bar cost five

Raspberry Torte

For the crust mix 1 cup flour,1/3 cup powdered sugar and one stick butter. Press into 9-inch pie pan. Bake at 350° for 15 min. and cool. For the topping beat two eggs, 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon baking power, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Pour over the crust. Spoon 3 cups of raspberries over the custard. Sprinkle 3/4 cup chopped nuts of your choice on top. Bake for 30 min. at 350°.

We were given a brief training period and then began the job of picking as fast as possible under the hot sun, without dropping or spilling berries. During a weekend at the height of the season, our families came to help out, making a fun time out of the effort. Jokes were passed back and forth, along with goodnatured ribbing as to who could fill a flat fastest. I only worked the raspberry fields one summer, as most raspberry seasons I stayed with my cousin Patty at my grandparents in Williston Park to pick their crop. We adhered to my father’s philosophy, one for the pot and one for the mouth. Patty and I rambled the area, making forts from tall foliage, hiding from our two much younger pesky boy cousins, and making trips to the little country store for grandma. It seemed a long walk down the dusty road, so we often took the shortcut through a path rumored to be a spot snakes liked to sit in the sun at the entrance. Everyone knew my mother was terribly afraid of snakes, due to the fact her impish brothers had once stuffed them down her back. None of these local snakes were poisonous, but they grew in size in our minds. One hapless day we had trekked the entire distance to the store and back to the entrance of the shortcut, only to see the fabled snakes sitting there, minding their own business. They were probably more afraid of us than we were of them, but we ran all the way back to the road and home again. I’ve always been fascinated by

snakes, but still didn’t want to step over them. Over time I’ve wondered if the snakes were just large branches that turned into the crawly creatures in our minds. At night, Patty and I slept upstairs under a slanted ceiling and had daily contests to see who could jump their feet high enough to touch the ceiling, a feat that became easier as we grew. Our grandpa was a small 5’6” mild-mannered man who smoked cigars and made dandelion wine he served at family occasions, giving each child he considered old enough a taste in a shot-glass. During the evening, he taught us how to play poker, using poker chips for currency. He was a carpenter and grew vegetables on their five acres of land. My sister Sharon remembers loading the produce and carrying it to a homemade stand to sell. He didn’t talk much, but had a gentle way about him and we all loved him dearly.

My mother once told us that a man down the road employed migrant workers. My grandfather was always friendly when they walked by. One day a black man stopped and asked grandpa if he could have a drink of water. My grandfather pointed to the cup hanging from a nail above the well and told him he was always welcome to help himself. Later that summer, the man came back with his young wife. My grandfather was not at home, so he told my grandmother the owner had raped his wife and asked if she could help them get away. My aunt Mary said that she was 10 years old and remembers the incident well. Her mother went inside the house, retrieved the money they were saving to work on the house and took the couple down to the bus stop. After paying their fare and giving them additional funds, she helped them get on the bus. This happened in 1940, a time See SUE’S MUZE Page 20 

father took a number of his grandchildren to witness the wonder of the Minnesota State Fair. It was a grand adventure visiting the animals and exhibits and riding the stately horses on the merry-go-round, each posed in a different riding posture, taking our imaginations on a wonderful gallop while listening to the Calliope music in the background. existed, as we never rode them, nor missed that part of the fairway. At noon, we unpacked the picnic lunch assembled the night before, and stretched our tired legs to eat, oblivious to the wondrous array of fair foods a short distance away. At the end of the day trip, we all searched for the car grandpa lost in the crowd of vehicles each year. Eventually, my brother thought of placing a red ball on the antenna. Now we grow our own crop of berries, some stock-ordered from a catalog, other plants garnered from friends thinning out their patch. I enjoy plucking the red fruits under the summer sun, soaking up the vitamin D among the bright rays, as well as tasting as I pop them into the pottery bowl for a later treat. In my opinion, there is never too much of a good thing in the form of raspberries, and I relish eating them to my heart’s content. It is our fond hope to have enough this year to freeze a few for raspberry tarts or make raspberry vinegar to cook with, or cordial to sip, all something to anticipate in the winter from the bounty of summer.

Raspberry renovation Jerrold Tesmer, Extension Educator for Fillmore/Houston Counties Jake Overgaard of University of Minnesota Extension Winona County will be giving a free on-farm workshop July 14th, from 1-2 pm on raspberry renovation at Hoch Orchard and Gardens near La Crescent, Minnesota. Participants will learn how raspberry plants develop, the Jerrold Tesmer importance of renovation, and how to renovate. High tunnel production will be discussed as well as variety selection. There will be an opportunity for hands-on learning (bring a pair of work gloves if interested!). The workshop will be

held at Hoch Orchard and Gardens near La Crescent, Minnesota. Weather permitting, this workshop will be held entirely outdoors; dress appropriately and bring your sunscreen. The Hoch Orchard and Gardens will also be holding an open house the same day, with farm tours from 11 am to 5 pm. Feel free to attend either or both events! Nitrogen management for alfalfa-corn rotations field day Jerrold Tesmer, Extension Educator for Fillmore/Houston Counties J e f f Coulter, University of Minnesota Extension Corn Agronomists, Matt Yost, University of Jerrold Tesmer Minnesota

Extension Research Assistant, and Michael Russelle, USDAARS Soil Scientist are conducting research on N credits from alfalfa to corn. This year, they have eight on-farm trials that are focused on predicting nitrogen credits from alfalfa to second-year corn. On Monday, July 16, we are planning to hold a field day for the on-farm research site located near Fountain, MN (Gary

Redalen Farm). Registration is at 9:30 am with the event running from 9:45 am to 12:00 noon. The field day will start with indoor presentations at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center auditorium. After the indoor presentations, we will look at the plots and have a guided plot tour on the Gary Redalen Farm. Jerrold Tesmer, Extension

Educator, Fillmore & Houston Counties, will moderate the indoor event at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center. At this event, there would be presentations on nitrogen management in alfalfa-corn rotations by Jeff Coulter and Matt Yost. As well as a presentation on manure management by Jose Hernandez, Extension Educator – Livestock Nutrient Management . We also antici-

pate having a presentation on alfalfa management/IPM by Lisa Behnken, Regional Extension Educator. This event is FREE and open to the public (no registration is required). Minnesota Pork Ambassador Winslow attends MAAI Minnesota Pork Ambassador Katie Winslow of Fountain attended the 17th annual Minnesota Agricultural Ambassador Institute (MAAI) in Red Wing and southeastern Minnesota. The MAAI program combines hands-on activities, speakers and tours that encourage and develop communication and leadership skills, and increase agricultural knowledge. Also, among the 40 individuals taking part were representatives from the Minnesota Pork Board, Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council, Minnesota Corn Growers Association, Minnesota FFA Association

and local FFA chapters, Minnesota Beef Council, Minnesota Lamb and Wool Producers, and local business summer interns. The MAAI participants toured agriculturally related businesses around the Red Wing area, including Red Wing Tannery, Red Wing Shoe Company, Spirit of the Water (Treasure Island Casino) River Ride, and Schafer Farms, Incorporated. This year’s keynote speaker was Lucas Sjostrom, Hoard’s Dairyman Association Editor of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Lucas encouraged the MAAI participants to be agricultural advocates by sharing their story with consumers. He advised the young advocates to travel across the world and captivate the different ways of agriculture. Also speaking at the conference were Mary Milla, Communication Coach, David Preisler, Min-

nesota Pork Board and Minnesota Pork Producers Association Executive Director, Ruth Meirick, Minnesota Farm Bureau, Jerry Knapper, Ingram Barge Company and Brandon Schafer, Schafer Farms, Incorporated.
