FILLMORE COUNTY JOURNAL
2020 Senior class officers reflect on the end of high school Chatfield High School McKenna Daniels Senior Class Vice President This senior year definitely didn’t go as expected, due to the pandemic. I have missed my senior prom, senior trip and my last year of playing softball with all my friends. It is hard trying to continue school online and keeping up McKenna Daniels with each class. I find myself waiting for the last minute to do everything. My motivation has fallen, and I don’t have the free time that I used to. I don’t get to see my friends anymore or continue to make the memories and go through our senior year together. Every Friday, my friends’ grandma would make lunch for my friends and I and we would talk about how our day has been or if we have any tests we had coming up. We would just sit and enjoy one another’s presence and enjoy life. Now I get to sit at home and eat lunch with my brother. Not being able to go on my class trip with them is also hard, knowing it was just another thing ever other senior was able to experience and enjoy and I got it taken away from me just like that.
Lastly, the thing I would say I am most upset about is missing my senior year of softball. There were seven seniors on the team, and we have all been playing together since we were nine years old. Our team this year had a very good chance of going to state this year and then in a blink of an eye it was gone. I have made so many memories with these girls and have made friendships that will last a lifetime. It was devastating finding out that I would not have my last chance to play with these girls one last time. While it was so hard to hear this, I was kind of prepared for it at the same time, due to having a month of expecting this to happen and prepare myself for the worst. While this pandemic experience has taken a lot for me and my senior year, I have been able to grow as a person and I know I will be a better person in the end of this. Fillmore Central High School Michael Barrett Senior Class President During this quarantine, I’ve been doing really well personally. Although it’s hard to stay motivated to get all my classwork in through Michael online learning, Barrett
I’ve been keeping up and my grades have actually improved. Online learning takes a lot less of my day than school did and the free time has been really nice for me. I’ve been learning about things and doing things that actually interest me. I’ve been getting into circuitry, doing some extra reading about what we’ve been learning in Advanced Chemistry, and trying to do a handstand push up. Emphasis on trying. And believe it or not, my room is actually clean for once. Of course, I miss my friends, but I’m talking to them daily anyway. I even miss some of my teachers, shout-out Mr. Holten and Elliott. I’ve heard a lot of my classmates’ disappointment with the end of their senior year. From prom to graduation, most of the classic senior year activities have been cancelled. While I might not personally be upset, I understand why they would be. I’m just not sentimental about these things. Everyone has fantasized about their senior year as an underclassman. Whether it be prom, the trip, or simply getting your diploma in front of that crowd, every underclassman can’t wait to be a senior. But, we got unlucky. We won’t have any of that, but that’s okay, it happens, that’s life. All we can do now is stay inside, try to make the best
of it and remember that things could be much worse. That’s been the mindset I’ve been trying to focus on during quarantine. Grand Meadow High School Mariah Weiss Student Body President Senior Class President In late January, early February, I remember going to my daily Anatomy class and my teacher talking about a rare virus hitting China. At first, I didn’t think it was a big deal because it was all the way in China and figured if Mariah it came to the Weiss United States, we would be just fine because Mayo Clinic is the best in the world, right?! As weeks passed, we still talked about the virus in class and eventually how it had reached Minnesota. I was then worried, my teacher told our class that it could possibly affect our school year. I didn’t believe him at the time, but here we are, seven weeks into quarantine. My senior year being robbed: my last ever high school track season, senior prom, senior class trip, baccalaureate, senior awards, the list goes on. Still, nobody knows how long this chaos will last but I will

always remember the day our school told us that we would be closed for two weeks minimum. It was a normal day at school until a teacher reminded us that this could possibly be our last day as a senior. Most of the class was emotional, including me. Once the school day was over, it was time to clean out my gym locker. I walked into the eerie gym and proceeded to the locker room. Nobody was in there, and that is when I lost it. I sat down on the bench and just started crying. So many thoughts, memories, and emotions flooded my head. As time passed, we found out more and more and now we must come to terms with it. I am coping with all of this by looking at the bright side. I have been in contact with my roommates for next fall and talking to them makes me excited for the future! Although the Class of 2020 might have missed that milestone in life, we have so much more to look forward to, our lives are just starting! I will miss my Grand Meadow family dearly, but I am ready for this next step in life! Houston High School Madelyn Srock Senior Class Co-President As a member of the high school Class of 2020, I’ve been faced with many unforeseen changes to my long awaited senior year. circulate I chose to ignore the severity of the situation because I didn’t believe that something this terrible would happen. When school closed on March 17, I hoped it would be temporary. But now my physical high school experi- Madelyn ence is over. Srock After resuming school online, the last few weeks have been a blur. I attempt to focus on my school, but most of the time I don’t know what day it is. My school work is not often difficult, but I struggle to find value or purpose in my online assignments. Even as the top student of my class, the quality of my work has gone down, and I haven’t had the motivation to try and prevent it. I feel stressed constantly, and I can’t find an escape because COVID19 has taken over everything. The media is so oversaturated with coronavirus news, I find it hard to look at the bright side. It makes me think of how graduation, prom, and all other senior traditions are gone, and it brings me to tears more often than not. I even feel unprepared for attending college in the fall, as my placement tests and freshman

orientation have been converted into online forms. Anything that was once concrete in my life has now disappeared, and I am struggling to adapt. Yet, I feel guilty when I complain. I see that others are affected in much worse ways that I am. I am very lucky to be healthy, and live in a wonderful home. Others are not so fortunate, and many spend their days putting themselves at risk. I feel selfish that I complain of my wants when the losses of others are far worse. But I believe that everyone is facing their own difficulties during this time, even if they don’t share it with others. Please reach out to the people you care for, and check in. We could all use someone to talk to right now. Kingsland High School Kaycie Bellrichard Senior Class President With the cancellation of the remainder of the in-person school year, Kingsland seniors are completing their high school careers through distance learning. Although the transition has gone Kaycie smoothly overall, a lot has Bellrichard changed. A few of the activities we are missing out on are the class trip to South Dakota, spring sports season, prom, and graduation.
The FCJ reaches over 17,000 households each week.
These activities had been in the works for months, and have now been canceled. The class trip to South Dakota had been planned since the beginning of the school year and was scheduled for late April. Although the students were upset that they could no longer attend, everyone was reimbursed for the costs. Many students were looking forward to their final spring sports season at Kingsland as well, whether it be golf, baseball, softball, track & field, trap shooting, or even the spring show. Many of our seniors were planning for this to be “their year” in sports, and now have to accept last year’s achievements as their lasts. Prom is another event that has been canceled at Kingsland. Every year, the prom is planned by the junior class and the prom advisor. Fundraising for this event lasts nearly a year and takes a tremendous amount of coordination and planning. At this time, there are no plans to reschedule prom at Kingsland, but many students are still making the most of it and getting dressed up for pictures in the formal wear they purchased for prom. Finally, there is no set graduation ceremony for Kingsland seniors at this time. This has left many students and families in distress. Many students have dreamed of walking across the stage forever, and parents do not want their children to miss out
on this iconic milestone. We all hope there will be a celebration of some kind to commemorate graduation, but there is no ceremony planned right now. Although most events have been canceled, many students at Kingsland are remaining optimistic through this time and are spending more time with their families, getting ahead on schoolwork, spending more time outdoors, and enjoying their various hobbies. We are all looking forward to when this is over. LeRoy-Ostrander High School Tanner Kasel, Nicole Freerksenn Tiana Plagman, Libertee Smalley Senior Class Officers The year 2020 will be a year to remember, especially for us seniors. Thirteen years in the same building, with the same friends, and a lifetime of memories all came to an end unannounced on a random Friday Tanner in March. It has Kasel affected some of us more than others, but for me the thing I miss the most is spending time in class with my friends. I also feel especially sorry for those students that did not get a final spring sports season. It has been an extremely unsatisfying end to senior year. First it started as a long break -
we had two weeks to relax and get things done we wanted to, catch up on homework, get a head of the homework, clean our rooms help around the house more. When we learned we likely would not return to school it was not exciting because that meant we really Nicole needed to stay on task and get Freerksenn things done and not getting to go back and finish high school right. We don’t have the teachers here to make sure we do it. Nobody to teach us how to do each step in the right order. This has taken a toll on everyone, not just people on the front line, but the kids/ students too. The pandemic has definitely been something different. COVID-19 has you thinking about a lot of things. The hardest part of the situation is the online learning aspect, some kids including each Tiana of us like hav- Plagman ing the face to face contact with teachers. It’s overwhelming and stressful but we are all trying to get the hang See 2020 SENIORS Page 25 ➤

of it. Online learning is not the only hard part; it is the closure you never got. When we got back from our school trip, we never thought it would be our last chance to see our classmates, friends, and teachers. The COVID-19 virus has put a lot of stress on our class as seniors because these last weeks were supposed to be our time to say goodbye to everyone and to have our last hoorah at our school. With having school online, I think we definitely appreciate those moments in the Zoom and Google Meet calls where we can see each other and talk as a class. These times have been hard but we’ll make it through it as a class just like we do everything! Trying to keep your mind off all the things Libertee Smalley you are missing out on like prom, class trip, and graduation is hard. Through this time, you just have to sit back and wait, there is nothing we can do. The pandemic has reminded me not to take things for granted even if its things you don’t like. To cope with the changes many of us and our classmates have spent time working/getting new jobs, using this free time to
save up a few extra bucks to go towards college. We have also tried our best to stay in touch with classmates through social media. Rushford-Peterson High School Jasmine Schueler Senior Class President Never in a million years is this how I imagined my senior year to end. I never would have guessed that walking out of school on March 17 would be the last time I walked out of Jasmine that school as a Rushford-Peter- Schueler son student. I am missing out on a lot this year. My senior prom, the senior class trip to Florida, senior awards night, sitting in my favorite hallway spot talking to my favorite teachers and friends, and my senior softball season. I have looked forward to this for years and watching previous years get to experience these things made me look forward to it tremendously. Yet, it all got taken away from me. It was a shock and it really made me realize that we can not take things for granted, even the smallest things. Even though times are tough right now I am finding joy in the little things. I am enjoying the extra time I get with my family before I will be heading off to Luther in the fall. My puppy is
Monday, May 25, 2020 surely enjoying the extra snuggles and kisses as well. I mean, I am enjoying the extra time spent with my puppy as well. I recently bought a new puppy so I am now a dog mom of two, so that is keeping me quite busy! Other than spending more time with my friends and family, there isn’t much to do. I am missing school, my friends, and my teachers tremendously during all of this. I didn’t think those last days would have been my last. Although this is not how I saw my year ending, I am grateful for all the support and love that has been shown for the Class of 2020. Spring Grove High School Amelia Solum Student Council President Senior Class President Hi, my name is Amelia Solum and I am the Student Council President at Spring Grove Public School this year as well as the Valedictorian of the Class of 2020. This school year was filled Amelia with lots of great Solum memories and experiences but it didn’t have the glorious ending that any of us expected. None of us would have ever thought that when we walked out of school on March 16th that it would be our last day of school in the school building. I have spent so many years there
FILLMORE COUNTY JOURNAL
learning, studying, being involved in music, playing sports, and growing up to be the individual that I am today. It is bittersweet that we can not have the end of our journey in the place where it all started. I always imagined the spring of my senior year to be the grand finale to my time in high school. The events that we were supposed to have would have been the reward for all the hard work we have put into everything we were involved in. Instead, we have to stay at home and watch our teachers on a screen and submit our homework online. I was really looking forward to our senior class trip to D.C, prom, academic excellence, baccalaureate, a National Honor Society banquet, awards night, etc. Some of these things are still taking place virtually but that doesn’t really have the same effect. As for graduation, I was looking forward to walking across the stage in the gym to receive my diploma just like both my mom and dad did when they graduated from Spring Grove High School. However, I am choosing to look at the bright side of things, which is what we should all try to do during a time like this. Our original graduation date was supposed to be May 31 so on that day our town is going to have a parade for the seniors and we are going to ride atop convertibles in our caps and gowns. It is awesome that our school and community want us to know that they support us, and
Page 25
it is a great feeling to be part of a town that really cares about each member of the senior class. Our new graduation date is August 7 and the school is planning to have it outside to follow proper social distancing guidelines. Individual banners have also been hung on the school fence along the highway to honor the class of 2020. The way that things are happening now may not be traditional, but this time has inspired people to think outside of the box to create new ideas and maybe even create new traditions. I want to thank the teachers and staff at Spring Grove Public School for trying to ensure that our last moments of high school are the best possible given the conditions. You all have impacted our class more than you will ever know. As the Spring Grove Class of 2020 motto states: “Some have a story, we made history.”
