10 PRaCtICal tIPs to Get YouR CaR ReadY FoR Fall Check the brakes and tires. Inclement weather and associated road conditions and other hazards require good stopping power. That means good brakes and tires. If the tires have wear bars showing, say the experts, you need to replace the tires. Most good brake and tire shops will inspect the brakes and tires at no charge. Also check the tire pressure, as tire pressure drops when the outside temperatures plummet. Keep the pressure at levels recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Check the lights. Walk around the outside of the car and check the operation of all lights: headlights, taillights, parking lights, brake lights and emergency flashers. Replace all broken bulbs and those that have stopped working. Make sure all lights are clean. If you own an older vehicle with sealed-beam headlamps, you might want to pony up for halogen lamps for improved visibility and safer driving. Replace wiper blades. The purpose of wiper blades is to completely clear the windshield. Cracked or worn blades won’t do an adequate job. Check the blade’s rubber to ensure it is flexible and operate the wipers to see that the blades clear the glass. Replace worn blades. Make sure heater/defroster work. Driving with an improperly working heater isn’t fun or safe. Driving with fogged-up windows is an accident waiting to happen. Check front and rear window defrosters to ensure proper working condition. If necessary, have heater and defroster systems repaired. Have the battery checked. A fully charged battery is necessary to start the car in cold weather. Have the battery and charging system inspected by a trained technician who can replace it if required. If you see signs of corrosion on the battery terminals or cable ends or if you spot loose connections, your battery needs attention. Inspect under the hood. Looking under the hood will allow you to identify any obvious signs of wear or items that need replacing or fixing. Look for leaks, cracks or loose clamps in the cooling system and squeeze the hoses and replace any that are spongy-feeling or brittle. Inspect the underside of drive belts for fraying and replace as required. If you’ve noticed any engine noises, experienced sputtering or other engine problems, have a licensed mechanic thoroughly inspect the engine and make any necessary repairs. Change oil and air filter. If the oil is dirty or you’re at your recommended oil change time, change the oil. Also check the air filter to ensure that it is clean enough to allow for proper operation. If you can’t see light through it when you hold it up to a 60-watt bulb, it’s time to replace the air filter. Refill cooling system. Experts such as AAA recommend checking the coolant level in the overflow tank when the engine is cold. If the level is too low, add a 50/50 solution of water and coolant to allow proper antifreeze capability. It may be necessary to refill the cooling system. Check all fluid levels. This includes washer fluid, along with transmission, brake and power steering fluids. Make sure they are all at or above minimum safe levels and refill as necessary. Get a good car wash/detail. It may sound crazy, spiffing up your car with an extra-special wash or even a detail, but when your vehicle is clean, it’s easier to spot any potential problems.

Spring Valley Chevy keeps you rolling

Blake Greenfield is proud to be continuing the services his predecessors offered at this location. Photo by Rich Wicks By Rich Wicks Blake Greenfield is the new owner of Spring Valley Chevrolet, and he believes, “If it aint broke, don’t fix it.” That philosophy applies to his staff, and to the services they provide. But on the other hand, if your vehicle is broken, Blake and his crew can almost assuredly fix it. The car dealership has been continuously operated at this

location (at the intersection of Highways 16 and 63 in Spring Valley) for longer than most can recall. The Zeimetz brothers (from Elma, Iowa) bought it in 1971, and ran it successfully for over 45 years, selling it to Blake in December of 2016. Blake says, “Almost four years ago, I had purchased the Chevrolet Buick store in Wells (Minnesota), and I bought that

from the Hinckley brothers. So I’ve been doing that for four years. And a few years back, Roger and I got to know each other doing the dealer trades. So we got to know each other over the phone that way… And then when he and Zip were ready to sell, they contacted me.” But Blake says he is very pleased that Roger and Zip Zeimetz are still on his crew. “We bought the store from Zip and Roger; I guess we took possession in December of last year. Under normal circumstances, they’re still working here most days. They do take some time off, because they’re wanting to do more retirement things, but it’s still in their blood,” stated Blake, and he hopes they continue sharing their expertise for a long time. He added, “It’s been a lot of fun. Roger won’t admit it, but I still learn a lot from him... We’re keeping that expertise here.” One area that Blake said he is keeping with tradition is in offering low-mileage “program cars.” He said Roger has a knack for finding these barely-used vehicles at affordable prices, and that’s something that Spring Valley customers have come to expect. The dealership offers sales, service, parts, a collision center, and towing. Blake shared that, since he took over, he’s changed very little, but, “We’ve basically doubled the size of our collision center in the basement. That’s the biggest change we’ve made… Maybe some of the newer community members maybe have never heard that we have a fully certified GM body shop/collision center. We are authorized to do warranty paint work. We do a lot of deer-hit work, and we have a tow truck. And we can get them set up with a rental vehicle right on site.” Blake says his “hidden gem” is the collision center, since most people think the business is only an auto dealership. He explained, “We have two guys in the collision center that have a good amount of experience and are very skilled with paint and body work. We have all the necessary tools. And they can work on any make or model, including imports. We custom mix all of our paint. So no need to order paint and wait for it to come in.” He added that his crew also uses a “plastic welder” which can fix anything from a

When asked what he hopes to change, Blake said, “The one thing that’s hard to do that we’d like to expand on is just the physical parking space…we want to do our best to accommodate so customers feel comfortable finding a parking space…I really strive to keep our building the same…I’ve come to the conclusion that I love this location.”

Blake adds that, “We certainly don’t want to change a whole bunch. Our biggest change is we’re just trying to carry a larger inventory, and a bit more variety in the inventory.” He employs a crew of 18 workers, with almost all working for him full-time. He also shared that, “We really appreciate the loyalty of our customers. It seems like businesses (in the Spring Valley area) are thriving. And I’ve been very impressed with how friendly our customers are. I’ve been very impressed with the businesses and the community.”

Ask a Trooper By Sgt. Troy Christianson Minnesota State Patrol Question: The clerk at a local gas station recently asked me if it is illegal not have a front plate on a vehicle. He stated he can’t allow someone to pump Troy H. gas without Christianson paying first if he is unable to read the license plate. He told me that many people have told him a front plate is not required in Minnesota. Answer: Minnesota State

Statute (M.S.S.) 169.79 states: “No person shall operate, drive or park a motor vehicle on any roadway unless the vehicle is registered in accordance with the laws of this state and has the license plates or permit confirming that valid registration or operating authority has been obtained.” Vehicles that are allowed to display only one license plate include motorcycles, a dealer’s vehicle or vehicle in-transit, classic car, collector car or a vehicle that is of model year 1972 or earlier that is not registered as a collector vehicle and is used for general transportation purpose. License plates must be displayed on the front and rear of the vehicle. They cannot be displayed in the front wind-

License plates issued to vehicles must also display the month of expiration in the lower left corner of each plate and the year of expiration in the lower right corner of each plate. The plate must be unobstructed and free from grease, dust or other blurring material (dirt, mud, snow, etc.) so the lettering is visible at all times. It is unlawful to cover assigned letters and numbers or the name of the state of origin with any material, including any clear or colorless material that affects the plate’s visibility or reflectivity. This also includes license plate brackets that block the state of issuance and tabs. Why do we have two license plates? First and foremost, it is the law in Minnesota M.S.S. 169.79. From a law enforcement perspective it is safer to have two plates. For instance… • If an officer needs to run vehicle information they can get the plate information from the front or rear of the vehicle. • It makes a suspect vehicle easier to identify if it is encountered from the front or the rear. • If a suspect vehicle is backed into a parking spot it is

more easily identified. • Identifying a suspect in a crime (from surveillance images) is easier with front and back plates. You can avoid a ticket — and a crash — if you simply buckle up, drive at safe speeds, pay attention and always drive sober. Help us drive Minne-

Full-time mechanic, part-time farmer enjoys working on vehicles at McCabe Repairs

Jerry McCabe stands with his dog, Kya, outside McCabe Repairs. Photo by Tim Little By Tim Little Jerry McCabe owns over 80 acres of pasture land and manages over 25 head of cattle, but, though he loves farming, his main vocation is auto repair. McCabe is the proprietor of McCabe Repairs, a fixture in Preston for the past 18 years.

To get to McCabe Repairs you pass by a charming restored farmhouse and continue to a large red outbuilding that sits, at least metaphorically, at the center of McCabe’s farm. While McCabe’s first love may be cattle farming, his livelihood for the past 18 years has been

servicing the cars and trucks of Preston and surrounding cities. “Farming is my hobby, “ McCabe jokes. “I’ve never just farmed. It’s not enough. You have to do it for fun because there is no big money in it.” McCabe and his wife, Pam, grew up in the Bluffton/Burr Oak, Iowa area and moved to Preston in 1987 when they purchased their farm, located just east of the Poet Biorefining complex off Highway 52. McCabe recalled as a young couple, he and his wife purchased the property with some trepidation. “It was a hard place to look at because it wasn’t very nice. When we first walked in the house there was a dead mouse hanging from the ceiling. Good thing we were freshly married,” McCabe laughed. McCabe and his wife have made lots of improvements over time. “The only thing that’s original is the house,” McCabe noted. Over time they added all the outbuildings, including the auto shop. In their early years of marriage, McCabe worked for other repair businesses, including Greenway Coop in Chatfield, a full-service station, and K&R Equipment in Fountain, a small engine repair shop. In 1999 McCabe decided to go off on his own and launched McCabe Repairs. McCabe is a self-taught

mechanic. “You learn by doing it wrong the first time and do it right the second time,” he joked. When McCabe first started his business he mostly worked on small engines. “That’s what I did at K&R,” he recalled, “when I came here a lot of lawn mower owners followed me. But, you’d starve to death working on them (mowers). It’s a seasonal thing, so I had to do other things that I know.” McCabe then began working on cars and trucks. Explore

McCabe and his wife have three children, Amanda, Alex and Adam. They are all grown now, but McCabe reminisced about the early days when money was tight and with three children the cost/benefit of both spouses working outside the home and sending their kids to daycare didn’t seem to be working out. “The daycare bills were getting too outrageous with three kids in See JERRY MCCABE Page 7 

How to handle car trouble while driving

An Official Legal Newspaper for Fillmore County can place flares and/or warning triangles behind your vehicle so oncoming traffic knows to drive around it. The popular not-forprofit motor club AAA recommends placing the first flare or triangle 10 feet directly behind the side of the vehicle that is closest to the road. The second should be placed between 30 and 60 feet (increase the distances as the posted speed limit increases) behind the middle of the bumper, while the third flare or trian-

gle should be placed between 120 and 360 feet behind the vehicle's right side. • Stay with the vehicle. Once you have called for help and set up flares or triangles, stay with the vehicle, though do so at a safe enough distance so you are not in harm's way. Sudden car troubles can be scary, but drivers who approach such issues calmly and quickly can reduce their risk for accident or injury.

Sudden car trouble is some- an issue arises suddenly. Remain the shoulder. A car that runs out of gas is certainly inconvenient, but if you can pull over to the shoulder or make it to the nearest filling station, then this unfortunate situation can be remedied rather easily. daycare. My youngest was four when I started the shop. It was great,” McCabe recalled, noting that after opening his shop on his farm property, “I never missed a t-ball game.” Once his three children got older, they joined McCabe in the shop frequently to help out. “When we started we (washed vehicle)

windows inside and out on the oil changes. My kids helped a lot,” he smiled in recollection. Transitioning his shop from small engines to car and truck repair is certainly the biggest change McCabe has seen in his 18 years in business. The advent of computerized vehicle diagnosis is another big development. McCabe uses a handheld device that he hooks up to vehicles to download codes,

Monday, October 30, 2017 then uploads the codes to one of two web-based programs that read the codes and provide potential causes of a vehicle’s trouble. McCabe recalled one situation where a customer’s car repeatedly stalled out when coming to a stop. The customer told McCabe: “I go up to a stop sign and it’ll quit and it won’t start. I have to tow it home. Then by the time I get it home, it will start.” McCabe used the computer program to diagnose the vehicle issue. The program told him there was a ground wire under the back seat that may be the source of the trouble. McCabe investigated and found the ground wire had rotted off. Replacing the wire fixed the problem. Currently, McCabe and has one long-time employee, Monty Darling, working with him in the shop. The two of them do general auto repairs including work on tires, brakes, exhaust systems, transmission, and engines. The shop does roughly 25-30 oil changes a week. “I’m in the works of trying to hire another guy,” McCabe said, “We need three of us to keep things going.” McCabe Repairs opens its doors at 8 a.m. weekdays, but, being a small business owner, closing time isn’t set in stone. “Sometimes you work till seven, sometimes you work till four,” McCabe noted. If you go to McCabe Repairs for service you are likely to be greeted by an unpaid staff member, McCabe’s Norwegian Elkhound, Kya. Kya greets most customers with a friendly lick. She is especially fond of McCabe’s auto parts delivery drivers who often give her treats when they stop by. Kya knows their vehicles by heart and rushes out to greet them. Customers also tend to enjoy her company as they sit waiting for work to be completed on their vehicles. McCabe has encountered many perplexing vehicle problems over the years. He recalled one situation where a customer’s car would repeatedly stall while driving down the road. The customer would go back to the car a little later and it would start right up. After much investigation McCabe determined the cause was simply a loose battery cable. “You only get a few minutes with most vehicles (to diagnose a problem),” McCabe stated, “To diagnose it’s problem in just a few hours can be very hard.” McCabe acknowledged the value in having customers provide as much detail about what their vehicle is doing, what noises it makes, what precedes or follows a problem they are having with their vehicle to help him more quickly diagnose the vehicle’s problem. “That saves them a lot, “ he said, acknowledging the benefit that a customer’s detailed observations about a vehicle can have on diagnosis. Of course, anything a customer can do to avoid a vehicle problem in the first place will also save them money. McCabe

recommends they have their vehicles looked over before winter. “Check your batteries, antifreeze, tire tread,” he advises.

Our staff at the Fillmore County Journal would like to take a moment to thank our readers and our advertisers for their support, participation, and sense of ownership of this publication. Without the support of our advertisers, we could not provide meaningful coverage of city council, county board, and school board meetings. We also could not provide free obituaries, along with free birth, engagement, wedding, and military service announcements. Without the support of our advertisers, there would be no sports section, and no recognition of the accomplishments of our youth. And, we wouldn't be able to provide all of the great human interest stories that capture the interests and hearts of our readers. And, we thank our readers for not only supporting this publication by reading the newspaper cover-to-cover each week, but for also supporting the businesses that advertise in this publication. There is a symbiotic relationship between our advertisers and our readers, for which we are grateful.
