process, Newgard asked me if I would assist with the auditing process. She printed off a report from the machine that showed all votes cast from the 18 ballots. All votes were cross-referenced with the predetermined votes accounted for on the ballots that were processed. In the end, the audit checked out and the machine was in good working order. A total of 18 test deck ballots from Bristol Township were processed on the DS200. As Newgard fed each ballot into the DS200, the machine quickly scanned and recorded each ballot tallying votes along the way. If a race did not have a candidate selected, it was noted. And, if a voter selected more candidates than eligible to be elected for a seat, that vote was discarded from the machine. However, all other eligible votes were counted. At the end of the
It is heartbreaking to see cemeteries that have come into such disrepair that they are hardly even recognizable as a cemetery anymore. And although we feel disheartened when we see these cemeteries falling further and further into remnants of what they once were, what can one person do? As shown by Don Lukkason of Lanesboro, Minn., one person can do a lot when they set their mind to it and enlist the help of others willing to help achieve an honorable goal. Around 2015, Lukkason took an interest in the Root River Settlement Burying Ground (BellBjelde Cemetery) on Gaelic Road north of Lanesboro, as he was investigating some of his family ancestry documents at North Prairie Church near Lanesboro.
“In the bottom of a file cabinet was a record book that was labeled Root River Burying Ground (Bell Cemetery), founded by researchers Ted and Wanda Olson of Fremont,” states Lukkason. As Lukkason has a keen interest in history, he found the cemetery and met the nearby landowners John and Jennifer Horihan, who like to stop and talk to those visiting the cemetery as they may be descendents of someone buried there. For over 100 years the cemetery has been maintained by the Horihan family. In recent history the cemetery has been taken care of by John and Jennifer Horihan, who live in the original Knud and Anne Knudson (Bell) farm that Charles Horihan purchased in 1912. Although the Horihan family

“We had gotten a grant from the State of Minnesota for a portion of the cost. That amount was $50,170.20 for the DS200s. The county had to match 50% of that amount for purchase plus pay for the extra. So the County paid $54,042.80,” according to Huffman. In addition, Fillmore County invested in Poll pads, which allow for the judges at each polling precinct to look up the name of each registered voter when they check-in prior to voting on Election Day. And, for those who have not registered to vote, but live in the precinct, the Poll pads allow voters to register on the day of the election. Huffman explained, “For the Poll pads, the total cost was

machine. A total of only 25 ballots had ever been processed on that machine, including 18 of those ballots processed during the General Election Public Accuracy Testing event. All votes from the test deck of ballots did not count toward the election. Each DS200 ballot machine goes through the same accuracy testing process. Carrie Huffman, Local Election Official for Fillmore County, Minn., was in and out of election training throughout the day, but was able to answer questions relating to the election equipment. “When we purchased the DS200s, the total cost was $114,160.00,” for 22 machines.

$65,220. We purchased 45 of them.” Fillmore County received a 25% matching grant for the Poll pads, which amounted to $18,629.32. The remaining cost of $46,590.68 was picked up by Fillmore County. Out of 37 precincts (14 cities and 23 townships), a combined total of 15 cities and townships will be using the Poll pads: Arendahl Township, City of Chatfield, Chatfield Township, Fillmore Township, Forestville Township, City of Harmony, City of Lanesboro, City of Mabel, City of Peterson, City of Preston, City of Rushford, City of Rushford Village, City of Spring Valley, Spring Valley Township, and City of Wykoff. According to Huffman, “In 2016, we had only two precincts that were mail ballot precincts. Those were Preble Township and the City of Whalan.” There were 1,096 absentee ballots, with 139 of those being mail ballots. Mail ballots have been on the rise. As of November 1, 2018, for the November 6, 2018, election, Huffman indicated that 1,231 ballots had been accepted, with 576 of those being mail-in ballots. The mail ballot precincts have increased from two to eight since 2016: Bloomfield Township, City of Canton, Canton Township, City of Fountain, Fountain Township, Newburg Township, Preble Township, and City of Whalan.
Dear Voters,
Over $29.6K has funneled in from special interest groups to attack me. They know Greg Davids will work for them and I will work for YOU. Please don't fall for the lies and smears. These groups seem to think the people of Houston and Fillmore Counties are gullible. I beg to differ. I am running for Minnesota State Representative because it is time for new positive leadership in our area. Enough of the same old worn out ideas. Enough of the bullying and smoke and mirrors. Enough of the big monied interests influencing campaigns with negativity and division. We need to put our people first and invest in the future. As a fifth generation resident of Houston County, I am concerned that we may not survive and thrive unless we make a change. That change starts by making sure our schools are first class again, so that more young families will want to stay here. It starts by making sure health care is affordable and accessible for ALL, so that people can take entrepreneurial risks and build our local economy. And most importantly, it starts by really listening to you, the people of Houston and Fillmore counties. I have spoken with thousands of you this campaign cycle and I will continue to meet with you in the future. As your representative, I will host 6 town hall meetings, 3 in each county, so that I can be the best possible voice for your concerns in St. Paul. I do not care which party you normally vote for. I am not running for a party, or any big monied interests, I am running because I want to work for you. I would greatly appreciate your vote tomorrow, November 6th. Let's make a change together.

In 2016, there were 12,223 registered voters. Newgard said that based on voter turnout thus far, there is anticipation that the 2018 election turnout out will rival 2016. The Election Official staff at the Fillmore County government center usually expects to work until about 10 p.m. or

C ommentary Facts? Ugh, figures By Eric Leitzen Hokah, MN Facts. Anyone else getting sick of that word? Alternative ones, fake ones, real ones, their relation to feelings... What the heck even is a “fact” anyway? If I remember Mr. Hines’ Science class Eric Leitzen correctly, it’s something that can be observed and agreed upon, but boy howdy is that not enough anymore. Don’t believe me? Keep reading. We’ll start with an easy one: the sky is blue. Now, barring colorblindness, overcast clouds, or other technicalities, that’s pretty
much accepted as a fact, hands down, no questions asked, right here, black and white, clear as crystal, right? Well, take a little journey of imagination with me to a time in the future. 2047, specifically. In that year, my daughter will be as old as I am now, 33 years old. Let’s imagine we can hop in a time machine of your choosing (DeLorean, TARDIS, phone booth, H.G. Wells’ bathtub, etc.) and visit my daughter in 2047. Let’s ask her if the sky is blue. Do you know what she will say? Because, if things don’t turn around fast (and I mean F-A-S-T) her response will be something like this: “Well, when I was a kid it was blue, but now it’s sort of white. You see, humans didn’t do
One Moment, Please...
“If you can’t say something nice, then...” By Jason Sethre Publisher Fillmore County Journal jason@fillmorecountyjournal.com Please raise your hand if you are sick and tired of all of the political ads; especially the negative Jason Sethre ones! “If you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all” apparently doesn’t apply to elections. Back to back political commercials flood the morning TV news channels. Our mailboxes are heaping with piles of direct mail that fill our recycling bins. Editorial Cartoon
And, most of it is negative. Mudslinging. I am proud to say that the advertising campaigns in our newspaper have been more focused on promoting what the candidates stands for and their promises to their constituents — presenting their vision. Maybe it’s because candidates realize the permanence of print, knowing they have to be careful with their message. Broadcast ads are in one ear and out the other pretty quick, that’s why they have to keep beating you over the head with the same ad. People hold onto newspapers for future reference and can easily share it with others. I’m pretty sure none of our readers are recording political TV ads to replay for their friends and fam-
enough to stop climate change, so when they finally realized too late how up the creek they were, they had to resort to something called “geoengineering.” That means they launched a bunch of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere to reflect some of the sunlight back and keep us from broiling... but as a result we don’t have blue skies anymore.” She was always so well spoken, that kid. Sound crazy? It’s true. If we don’t act fast (and I mean F-A-S-S-S-T) it won’t just be blue skies that are no longer an observable fact. Say goodbye to hamburgers, or meat in general, or maybe even vegetables not grown in a lab or greenhouse. We’re not really sure how scattering sunlight will affect green plants, but hey, for now the sulfur dioxide plan is only Plan B behind actually trying to
not pollute so much, so... silver lining? Or is that a white lining, now? Oh well, at least I didn’t have to drive one of those weird electric cars. Sure, the heating of the planet is already causing catastrophic storms and will eventually lead to water wars (and yes, the aquifer Minnesota draws from will be affected) so we can cross the old “water is wet” off the “obvious facts” list. As reported in the New York Times on October 7, 2018, “a group of scientists convened by the United Nations to guide world leaders, describes a world of worsening food shortages and wildfires, and a mass die-off of coral reefs as soon as 2040” and also “if greenhouse gas emissions continue at the current rate, the atmosphere will warm up by as much as 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit (1.5 degrees Celsius) above preindustrial lev-
ily, but I may be in the minority. By the numbers There has been a lot of money spent on the election, especially in Minnesota. According to the Center for Responsive Politics presenting data from the Federal Election Commission, from January 1, 2017, to October 26, 2018, more than $46 million has been raised for political advertising by Democrats and Republicans to infect our brains for the 2018 mid-term election. And, of that $46 million, Democrats raised $22.4 million while Republicans raised $17.6 million. The remaining millions came in the form of soft money and PAC donations. This is one state out of 50 states. And, Minnesota ranks 22nd in the nation in political ad spending. According to Borrell Associates, as of September 7, 2018, the estimated political
ad spending would top out at $8.93 billion for this election. California voters have been slammed with the most political ads, topping out at $1.76 billion, consuming nearly 20% of the total political ad spending in the United States. The state of New York is in second place with $638.3 million, with Florida falling into third place with a mere $563 million. So, as much as we may be annoyed with all of the political ads consuming our lives these days, we are only ranked 22nd out of 50 states on the U.S. political ad spending list. I think that’s a list in which most of us would agree we’d like to finish in last place. I guess what’s really disappointing to me is how much money is spent on (negative) political advertising that could actually do something good for our society. I don’t mind a candidate sharing their views and promoting their ideology. I just can’t stand all of the negative political advertising. We don’t need further polarization.
els by 2040, inundating coastlines and intensifying droughts and poverty,” so it looks like a lot of the facts we take for granted could turn out to be, well, fudge-able by the time my four-year-old girl is my age. Isn’t it funny how facts work, sometimes? Sometimes new facts disprove other facts we thought would never change, and sometimes we don’t want them to change. Sometimes we go to great lengths to convince ourselves of certain facts and how they will never change... and then they have the rudeness to come barging through out front door and ruin our nice carpet... or planet. Maybe, when you’re looking at something like decisions that could literally wipe out a large amount of life on this planet... you need to let some of those uncomfortable facts in.

Ask a Trooper Fillmore County Police Reports By Sgt. Troy Christianson Minnesota State Patrol Question: My father found a wallet at a big retail store while on vacation and was concerned about handing it off to the staff there, instead deciding to contact the owner directly. He was e v e n t u a l l y Sgt. Troy H. pulled over Christianson by local PD, with the wallet in hand, and was told he could be brought up on theft charges. What should he have done? His intent, clearly, was to ensure that the staff at the store wasn’t going to pocket any cash from the wallet before putting it in their safe, but that’s not how the police perceived it. Answer: He should have turned it over to a supervisor at the store where it was found or reported it to the local Police Department or Sheriff’s Office. If the wallet had been stolen and discarded where your father found it, it would be considered stolen property. Explaining to law enforcement how and where the wallet was found might clear him as a suspect of possessing stolen property. If further evidence is required, law enforcement could obtain video footage from the store that would support his statement. Wallets, purses and property found on state highways or freeways have been turned into troopers and MSP office staff employees. We examine the property in an attempt to find a form of identification that could be used to contact the owner. If you lose a wallet or purse that contains credit cards, contact your credit card company to report it missing as soon as possible. Contact your state’s Department of Vehicle Services to report your driver’s license missing and to request a duplicate license. If the wallet or purse is stolen, report it to your local law enforcement agency. A report will be generated and the items will be returned to you if found. You can avoid a ticket — and a crash — if you simply buckle up, drive at safe speeds, pay attention and always drive sober. Help us drive Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths. If you have any questions concerning traffic related laws or issues in Minnesota send your questions to Sgt. Troy Christianson – Minnesota State Patrol at 2900 48th Street NW, Rochester, Minn. 55901-5848. Or reach him at Troy.Christianson@state.mn.us.

Bonnie Hedrick Bonnie Margaret Dinneen Hedrick passed at her home on October 26, 2018, surrounded by her family (including the fourlegged members). Bonnie was born at the Oak Knoll Naval Bonnie Hospital in Hedrick Oakland, Calif., on Sept. 7, 1968, to Daniel and Jennie Clark Dinneen. Her father’s military service required relocating 10 times in four years, planting the seed for Bonnie’s wanderlust. Along the way her brother “Feef” (Patrick Scott) joined her. After her father completed his service, the young family returned to Rochester, Minn. Bonnie attended Rochester Public Schools, graduating from John Marshall in 1987. Growing up, Bonnie was an avid downhill skier, was active in band, and enjoyed an eclectic variety of musical interests. She was a hard worker and always maintained a job or two. After graduating high school and attending college, Bonnie headed west for the mountains. Skiing gave way to snowboarding. She eventually made her way to Big Cottonwood Canyon (in northern Utah), and it was there that she found her husband, Nathan Bradley Hedrick. Bonnie and Nate created a family of their own: Connor Riley Dinneen Hedrick and Eleanor Jane Dinneen Hedrick. After initially making their home in Cedar City, Utah, the family relocated to Chatfield, Minn. Being her first born, and having a several year advantage over his sister, Connor formed a special bond with Bonnie like no one else. Eleanor, on the other hand, was born with a BIG personality. Her mother would often say that there are no strangers in Eleanor’s world, only friends that she has not yet met. According to her kids “Bonnie was a strong, kindhearted, brave, bright soul and a very loving person.” Neither could ever leave home without hearing “I love you, make good choices.” Bonnie was a skilled artist. She created many practical items, with a special interest in knitting, felting, other textile art, and jewelry. She favored creating wearable and useable art. Bonnie and Nate shared an interest in homestead-

stroke from which she was unable to recover. Marlys was born October, 29, 1929, in Mower County, Minn., the sixth child of Theodore and Dena (Gilbertson) Iverson. She was valedictorian of her high school grad- Marlys Larson uating class of 1948 and in 1958 began her employment as the bookkeeper for the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Ostrander. On September 10, 1961, she married Donald Larson and they made their home in Spring Valley until his death in 1974. Marlys stayed in Spring Valley where she enjoyed fishing, playing cards and socializing with her friends. She continued to work at the Ostrander Elevator and in the 1991 “Celebrate a Century of Living” booklet, created to commemorate Ostrander’s 100-year history, Marlys was recognized as one of three individuals who stood out as providing exceptional dedication and service to the Co-op. She retired in 1989 but continued to be very active as a volunteer at the Spring Valley Community Center, preparing and serving meals. Ann, one of her friends from the center said of Marlys, “She was indispensable to me…” and that most of what she learned came from Marlys. She volunteered and served there for many, many years, only recently stopping due to health problems. Marlys was a true independent spirit who will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends. Marlys is survived by her nieces Edda (Ronnie) Willert, Debbie (Curt) Long and Sherri (Benny) Judice; great-nieces and nephews Cathy, Kristi, Jackie and Dani; Dawn and Scott, Curtis and Ashlee, Tara, Tasha and Brian; and numerous great-great-nieces, nephews and cousins. Marlys was preceded in death by her husband, Donald (Tony) Larson; father Theodore Iverson and mother Dena Iverson, brothers Raymond, Leverne and Henry; sisters Doris (who died in infancy) and Violet Iverson, and niece Donna Tindal. Hindt Funeral in Spring Valley is handling the arrangements. At Marlys’ request there will be no funeral but family, friends, and others whose lives Marlys touched are invited to a graveside service at Bloomfield Cemetery in Ostrander, date and time to still be determined. ing (self-sufficiency) skills, as is reflected throughout their home, yard, and lifestyle. In early August 2015 Bonnie was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma and was told she had “two to four months.” She adopted a new motto, “Everything will be okay.” She showed her oncologist a picture of her family and said “I need you to help me stay in this picture.” She maintained an eternally positive outlook throughout the three-plus years of battling her illness. Bonnie’s warrior attitude proved the experts at the Mayo Clinic to be wrong — she outlived their longevity prognosis many times over. Bonnie utilized her time to make sure she will always be present in the lives of her children. Subsequent to her diagnosis she did extensive legacy work: many long-distance family road trips to create new memories that will last a lifetime, journaling, scrapbooking, creating more artwork and heirlooms, lots of quality time with family, anything and everything that she could do to ensure that “everything will be okay” for Connor and Eleanor. Bonnie maintained lifelong connections with many of the friends that came into her life. Her personal code, “always be kind,” made meaningful friendships easy. Her diagnosis brought new friends in the form of her global cholangio support group, and a redefined friendship with her high school friend, Joe Brom, her “cancer tour guide,” whose journey was completed before her own was. Longtime friends stepped up during her illness and supported the family in virtually every way imaginable. Cancer itself is no blessing. The love, and the reprioritizing of what is important, and what is not, that come in its wake can be. Bonnie’s family extends gratitude to each and every member of the Mayo Clinic staff that joined in her journey (you know who you are) and a special thanks to her Hospice team, who assisted Nate in achieving her goal to remain at home with her family. Visitation for family and friends was held at Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield on Friday, November 2, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral took place at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester on Saturday, November 3 at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Bonnie’s family (Nate, Connor and Eleanor). Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield assisted the family with arrangements. Mary Anne Overland Mary Anne Overland, age 80, of Rushford, Minn., passed away Friday morning, October 26, 2018, at Winona Health Hospital, in Winona, Minn. She was surrounded by the peace of our Lord Mary Anne with her lovOverland ing kids by her side. John 3:16 Mary Anne Overland was born June 20, 1938, in Cloquet, Minn., to Henry and Vera (Johnson) Christiansen. After her father’s passing they moved to Peterson, Minn. She attended Peterson High School. She married Karrol (Sam) Benson, the father of her children; they later divorced. She married Phillip Overland in 1973 and they lived in Peterson, San Francisco Bay area, and Rushford. She was a past member of Grace Lutheran Church in Peterson, Minn., and current member of Rushford Lutheran Church. Mary Anne was an incredible lady, loved by many. She had an unmatched passion and zest for life that allowed her to travel to many beautiful places making friends. She loved her annual vacations with her sister Joan and friends. She also loved the time she and Phil spent living in the Bay Area of California. After returning home to Minnesota they settled into their dream home (and yard) where Mary Anne loved spending time outdoors tending to her gardens. Her many trips to Duluth were something that she cherished. She also treasured her many loving friends close to home that meant the world to her. And, of course, her times spent with the Johnsons. The farm was indeed a special place! She treasured friends at each of her places of work. Rush Products, Camera Art, NASA Ames Research Center, in California and lastly a calling where she shined the most, Good Shepherd Lutheran Home. Above all, Mary Anne was most proud of her family. She was always there with her trusty camera to take pictures of any, and all, events in their lives. A passion (some say obsession) Mary Anne had later in life was Facebook. It’s probably safe to say Facebook will never be the same again. She was especially proud of all her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. As one of the grandkids said, “You will never meet a lady who loved her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids more than this one. She was as spunky as they come. To say we are going to miss her is an understatement.” See OBITUARIES Page 7

Fillmore County Sports By Paul Trende Could this be the year MabelCanton volleyball goes to state? Lonnie Morken has long The Trende Report run a topnotch program, but the answer is a realistic maybe. Section 1A is as open as it has been. Paul Trende There is no awe-inspiring squad. M-C is the Section’s only ranked team (#6). West juggernaut Faribault B.A. is not quite the same without ex-coach Franz Boelter. M-C is going to have to beat three quality clubs. One (perennial power) is down, the next is a familiar foe (the Cougars have already beaten thrice), and then a section title game. Who knows? M-C (1-seed, 27-5) first got past Kingsland (9-seed, 15-17) in the 1A East quarters, 25-15, 25-20, 25-18. Maddy Michels served the key scoring run in every game (4 kills, 24-24 serving, 11 straight points in set three). Kenidi McCabe (27 assists, 17 digs), Sarina Stortz (12 kills), Payton Danielson (7 kills, 11 digs), Lexi Thorson (5 kills, 15 digs), and Hannah Snell (11-11 serving, 3 aces, 14 digs) also did work. Lauren Buchholtz (14 kills, 20 digs), Ellie Buchholtz (13 kills, 21 digs), Alyssa Link (26 assists, 9 digs), and Jenna Schmidt (18 digs) led Kingsland, which finishes 15-18. M-C (1-seed, 28-5) then renewed its rivalry with Caledonia (4-seed, 18-11). The Cougars controlled things for almost three full sets. M-C led game one the duration, prevailing 25-16. They fell behind 5-1 in set two. Michels then had another key serving run (five points, three aces), turning an 8-8 tie into a 13-9 lead. The Cougars finished 24-11 for the 25-16 win. M-C was then up 19-11 and 22-14 in game three. Warrior senior Katie Tornstrom then got hot (seven kills down the stretch). Her ten-kill set helped
Caledonia to a 27-25 comeback win. Game four saw M-C mostly in front. Down the stretch it was tight (23-21, 23-22, 24-22, 24-23). Finally, Michels hammered a big shot, deflected deep and unplayable. The Cougars got revenge for back-to-back 1A East title game losses, winning 3-1 (25-16, 25-16, 25-27, 25-23)! Michels had a career-high 22 kills on .450 hitting (13-13 serving with 4 aces; 37-37 serving on the week). M-C had 99 digs. Hannah Snell (career-high 25 digs, 24-25 serving), McCabe (53 assists, 17 digs), Thorson (8 kills, 22 digs, 3 aces), Danielson (12 kills, 16 digs), Stortz (12 kills), and Lauren Wyffels (12 digs) made it a team-effort. Tornstrom (19 kills, 13 digs), Lydia Lange (15 kills, 15 digs), and Haley Jennings (39 assists, 15 digs) led the Warriors. It will be M-C (1-seed, 29-5) versus SG (2-seed, 26-3) for the 1A East title.
Hurricanes Run to Section Title Game
They’ll play to go to state for the first time since 2009. Houston football’s run has reached another level. The #7 ‘Canes (2-seed, 7-1) ran past two foes to make the Section 1 9-Man finals. A quarterfinal with L-O (7-seed, 2-6) was a little dicey. Houston jumped out 22-0 only for the Cards to tie the game at 22. Houston scored before the half (28-22) and after (36-22). L-O replied (3628). Houston scored (44-28). L-O again replied. The conversion critically failed, keeping it a two-score game (44-34), where it remained. Houston prevailed 50-40. Joey Fishel (18-168, 3 TDs rushing) and Jaytin Millen (21-133, 4 TDs rushing) led a big double-H ground attack. Trey Hungerholt (22-30, 361 yards, 4 TDs passing, 18-167, 2 TDs rushing) was huge for the Cards. He hit Riley Olson (8-144 receiving), Carter Johnson (3-95 receiving), Chase Johnson (6-81 receiving), and Tanner Kasel for TDs. Houston won in September 54-14. Cody Hungerholt’s group then hosted GM (3-seed, 7-2) in the semis. The ‘Canes got two
Houston’s Joey Fishel gallops through the GM defense. He and senior teammate Jaytin Millen combined for 575 yards and 9 TDs in Hurricane play-off wins over L-O and GM. Both are over 1,000 yards rushing. Houston is in the 9-Man Section 1 title game. Photo by Paul Trende
first quarter TDs for a 14-0 lead. Mikkel Schutte then authored a key 40-yard interception return TD for a 22-0 lead. GM got on the board; Evan Oelhke a 77-yard TD pass to Luke Speer. Houston answered just before half, a Ben Walters 38-yard TD run. Oehlke and Speer connected again (67 yards), but the Larks were critically held in the final ticks of the stanza. Houston led 28-6. In the second, GM started with an eightplay TD drive (28-14). They ran five more plays. Houston ran 35! The ‘Canes had two super long drives, a 14-play, 67-yarder (Fishel 14-yard TD run), and a 21-play, 61-yarder. The later produced no points, but milked over 10:00 off the fourth quarter clock. Houston controlled GM, final 36-14. Millen was the man (31-184, TD rushing), posting his ninth 100yard game. Fishel (13-90, TD rushing) and Walters (14-78, TD rushing) got some. Schutte fell on an offensive fumble for his another TD. Oehlke (9-20, 204 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs passing) and Speer (4-162, TD receiving) did GMs damage. The #7 ‘Canes (9-1) will face #1 SG (1-seed, 10-0) for the Section title. Nine wins is Houston’s most since the 2008 state title year (14-0). Millen’s near 1,400 yards (17 total TDs, scored in every game) and Fishel is over 1,000.
Gophers Make First Section Title Since 2013
There for a span, it was a whitehot rivalry. Chatfield’s culmination was a memorable 1AA title game win in the 2013 state title season. The Gophers and Caledonia are set to meet again for the 1AA title. Chatfield (2-seed, 6-2) had no trouble with Cotter (7-seed, 0-8) in the quarters. A 28-point first quarter gave way to a 44-6 win. Sophomore Ben Roline (12-173, 3 TDs) had great mop-up stats. Gage Tuohy (3-47, TD rushing), Carson Larrabee (2-54, TD rushing), Chance Backer (2-58, TD receiving), and Reid Johnson (3-6, 79 yards, TD passing) all scored in the first. Cotter had six turnovers. Chatfield (2-seed, 7-2) then hosted upstart Triton (6-seed, 2-7). Big receptions were huge. Larrabee caught an 80-yard wheel-route TD in the second quarter, Tuohy an 82-yard screen pass TD (both from Reid Johnson) in the third. The scores gave Chatfield 13-7 and 21-7 leads. Triton scored early in the fourth (28-14), but Tuohy cemented things with two ensuing TD runs for a 42-14 win. The senior (19-144, 2 TDs rushing, 82-yard TD reception) had a huge game. Larrabee (13-64, TD rushing, 80-yard TD reception, forced fumble, sack) also scored two ways. Johnson scored three ways (6-10, season-high 243 yards, 2 TD passing, rushing TD, two-point reception from Tuohy). Chatfield won turnovers 5-0 (11:0 ratio in the play-offs). Seth Allen sniped his eighth pass and had a fumble recovery. Triton was led
by sophomore QB Mason Barker (12-24, 144 yards, TD, 2 INTs; 13-47 rushing), Anthony Avery (16-84 rushing), Austin Melder (8-39, TD rushing), and Drew Kelly (4-62, TD receiving). It will be #8 Chatfield (2-seed, 8-2) versus #1 Caledonia (1-seed, 10-0) for the 1AA title.
Oh Yeah for O’Hare, Ellinghuysen
Redemption is too sweet. A year ago was Luke O’Hare’s first year running cross country. He was in position at the Section 1A Meet to make state. But going hard for 5000 meters is taxing, particularly for a young newcomer to the sport. O’Hare didn’t finish. But make no bones about it. He has running in his blood. Older brother Austin was a state participant, a collegiate runner. Sister Bailey was All-Conference. And Luke has transformed a bunch physically, from a gawky freshman to longer and stronger sophomore. And he can boast something that few can: the Section 1A individual C-C title. In the last three hundred or so meters, beyond where he faltered last year, O’Hare pulled away. Around the last corner, down the home stretch, he sprinted to a finish. With a personal best of 17:01.8, and somehow devoid warm garments from earlier in the race, O’Hare was the first to cross the finish line at the Rochester Northern Hills Country Club course. He bested nearest foes Samson Hagen (PEM > 17:07.7), Alex Lawrence (Stewartville > 17:08.9), Axel Daood (St. Charles > 17:12.4), and Austin Dawley (PEM > 17:13.3). He wasn’t the only LARP runner punching a trip to Northfield. Aidan Ellinghuysen was less the 30 seconds back (17:29.8). The senior finished tenth. With PEM (53) taking the team title and Lake City (82) second (earning trips to state), Ellinghuysen was the sixth

individual (of eight) to clinch an individual state berth. He took 31st last year (18:14.8). Matt Kingsbury’s LARP team took a more than respectable fourth (131), behind La Crescent (102), ahead of Stewartville (143), in a 22-team field. Ricky Buchanon (38th), Mitchell Ledebuhr (40th), and Tyler Rislov (45th) finished top 50 (152-man field). Chatfield 8th grader Treyton Lanning (43rd) also pulled off the top 50 distinction. The Gophers finished 11th, LFC 19th, and Kingsland 20th. On the girls’ side, LFC’s Kaylee Arndt was looking for another trip to state. In only her second race this year, with an ailing hip, the sophomore fell short. She took 23rd overall (21:08.8), back a bit from last year’s state pace (20:33.5). With Cotter taking first and Lake City second, Arndt was the 15th individual finisher (top eight not from state teams qualify). The top Journal covered finisher was Chatfield’s Aletta Strande (20:24.6). The Gopher 8th grader took 15th overall and was three spots, eight seconds, from qualifying for Northfield. She ran 22:38.5 last year. LARP runners Ellie Ekern (7th grader), Hannah Linder (sophomore), and Lauren Honken (7th grader) went 37, 38, 39. Gophers Beatrice Martin (41st) and Abbi Gillespie (48th), LFC’s Brielle Ruen (49th), also finished top 50 (136-girl field). Grace (17:49.9) and Lauren (18:09.8) Ping repeated 1-2. Chatfield took 9th, LFC 10th, LARP 13th, and Kingsland 19th (20 complete teams).

has maintained the cemetery well over the last 100-plus years by keeping it mowed and trimmed, over time many headstones had fallen to pieces, a condition Lukkason felt needed to be addressed. And so began a several year project that would be spearheaded by Lukkason. A manuscript of the history of the Bell Cemetery was located by Debra Richardson, Executive Director of the Fillmore County History Center and Museum in Fountain, Minn. throughout the project. Bell Cemetery is a pioneer cemetery which was officially named Root River Settlement Burying Ground in 1867. Many early settlers are buried in the oneacre cemetery, which was sold by Knud and Anne Knudsen (Bell) to a cemetery association in 1867 for $10. Both Richardson and Lukkason noted that it is very unusual for a cemetery to have the title of burying ground. “Burying grounds is actually a Yankee term, which is very unusual to have west of the Mississippi, states Richardson, “especially Norwegians. Through their research, Rich-

ardson and Lukkason found historical information in Images of America, Lanesboro, Minnesota, Historic Destination by Don Ward and Ted St. Mane, “On the Banks of the Root River (writings from the estate of Harvey Sathre), and 1882 History of Fillmore County. Included in their research was the fact that this area near Lanesboro, in Carrolton Township, was settled by immigrants from Sogn fylke (state), Aurland (district) and Bjelde gard (farm area) of western Norway. Upon arrival to America from Norway, they settled in Koshokong, in Dane County, Wis., in the mid-1840s. In 1854 they came to the territory of Minnesota. Knud and Anne Knudsen (Bell), Rognald and Tollev Knudsen (Bell), R Peterson, and Jules and Sille Skari were the first to settle in the area. In approximately 1856, the area of Carrolton Township which is now Lanesboro was welcoming new settlers with names such as Con Scanlon, Thomas Barrett, Ed and Charles Johnson, John McLaughlin, Lars Christenson and Ed Enright. For several years, ranging from approximately 1867 to 1920, burials in the Bell Cemetery were of those from around the area, including the areas that are now ministered by the Union Prairie, North Prairie and Bethlehem Lutheran churches. After learning much of the history of the cemetery and talking at length about how a restoration project could be started, Lukkason and John Horihan decided to move forward. A fundraising effort was started, including making phone calls to ask for donations. John Horihan then brought the project idea to the Carrolton Township annual meeting, where the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Township board voting members Ben Taylor, Steve Olson and Steve McCallson voted to not only approve the project, but also for the township to donate the

remaining funds needed for the cost of the project. McCallson explains that the Minnesota Association of Townships has been encouraging townships to improve and restore abandoned cemeteries throughout their townships, so the town-
ship board was thrilled to be a part of the project. Mike Karsten, with Winona Monument and a monument counselor for Sunburst Memorials, whom Lukkason met while See RESTORATION Page 13 

planned for the future when stones may need to be redone. “We uncovered a lot of pieces of the original stones under the ground. We took some pieces and put them in a time capsule so when these have to be redone again (75 to 100 years) they will have pieces of the original material to work with,” he says, as the material the stones are made of are no longer available. “You can’t replace the 1800-style stones,” notes Harris. “It’s very rewarding being able to restore these relics of the past. Most of the time, the relatives of these stones have all passed away, so cemeteries take the restoration process on themselves. I am

Fortunately, when Karsten needed someone to read the Norwegian writing on the stones he needed to look no further than Lukkason. “He was my interpreter. He was up here every day we had a major day (deciphering head stone pieces),” states Karsten. I cannot prove that but I know that,” she states. “We did not go deeper than about a foot and a half or two with the probes because we were looking for the stone, (and nothing else),” states Karsten. in regards to Indian burials. And that goes back to the early 1700s — there were 50 mounds here at one point,” she explains. The cemetery overlooks a large flat cornfield which is also of great historical importance, according to Richardson. “This is all oral history, but there was a battle between the Chippewa and the Winnebago, and that flat, as I understand it, is what would have held the 50 mounds which were eventually plowed over,” she states. The preservation of history is of the utmost importance and it takes just one person to set a plan and a project in motion. Even if it is a long and complicated process they persist to see the project through, such as Lukkason has done. A huge amount of appreciation goes out to Don Lukkason, Mike Karsten, Winona Monument,

Everyone involved should feel a sense of pride for what has been accomplished and the respect that has been shown to our ancestors. Undoubtedly, the Root River Settlement Burying Ground has many more stories yet to tell — and thankfully people like Don Lukkason will always be listening, searching for answers and showing our ancestors the respect they deserve.

Preparing for the future By Amara Nelson Senior year is an intimidating time of a young person’s life. You are just starting to figure out what you really want to do with your life. Some people choose Amara Nelson to go into the military or straight to work after high school, and others go to college. Whichever way you choose to go, it is intimidating to say the least. Most of us high schoolers have only been working for a few years, and that’s just at small part-time jobs in between school and extracurricular activities.
By the time senior year rolls around, most of us are accustomed to not always depending on our parents. The popular question I hear asked amongst students is, “What do you think it will be like to be on our own without our parents?” This is something no one can really give you an answer to. It’s one of those things that you have to experience it to understand it. As a young person, I have the same questions as my fellow classmates. We all think about what we’re going to do with our lives. For those of us who are going to college, we’re expected to know what our majors are going to be. The next question is always what do you plan to do with that major? It really gets students to start thinking

about how they can prepare themselves for the future. For those of us who get to take Mr. Aaron Mensink’s Business Finance class, the first thing we learn is to save and do things the Dave Ramsey way. Other than saving, we think about what colleges we are going to go to, what our majors will be, and what jobs we want to have. Whether those careers be teachers or neurosurgeons, as long as we love our jobs, that’s all that really matters. Here’s a message to the class of 2019: Do what you love. According to bls.gov, “In October 2017, 66.7% of 2017 high school graduates age 16 to 24 were enrolled in colleges or universities. Among persons age 20 to 29 who received a bachelor’s degree in 2017, 77.6% were employed. Among those age 20 to 29, unemployment rates for recent associate degree recipients, recent bachelor’s degree recipients, and recent advanced degree recipients were 5.6%, 8.3%, and 11.9% respectively.” If you look at the statistics, you can see getting at least your bachelor’s degree is worth the effort — for those of us going to college at least. This could be just what you need to get your first foot forward in planning the rest of your future. If you are not going to college and decide to work right out of high school, more power to you. You are already a step ahead of everyone else. If you are one of the very brave men and women who go into the military, I thank you for your service to our country. No matter what direction you may take in life, it will lead you down a road to a success of your very own. As Marc Antony once said, “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Amara Nelson is a student at Fillmore Central High School. She is one of eight area students participating in the Journal Writing Project, now in its 20th year.

by 45% since the program began in 2003. About 1,000 traffic safety professionals attended this year’s TZD conference October 23-24 in Mankato. “TZD is a tremendous asset to the state in reducing traffic deaths,” said MnDOT Commissioner Charlie Zelle. “The
individuals and organizations honored this year for their work are making a difference to save lives and reduce serious injuries on our roadways.” The awards are given annually to individuals and organizations in Minnesota that show excellence in TZD’s emphasis areas of enforcement, emer-

They have shown their leadership and creative capacities to improve traffic safety throughout the state and build partnerships. “Some people may think that aiming for zero deaths on Minnesota roads is not a reasonable goal, but we’re making progress,” said Public Safety Commissioner Mona Dohman. “I’m proud of our statewide traffic safety partners and TZD award winners for seeing that vision and working every day to turn it into reality. Thank You readers a
nd advertise rs for your support, participat ion, and s ense of ownership of this pu blication .
Our staff at the Fillmore County Journal would like to take a moment to thank our readers and our advertisers for their support, participation, and sense of ownership of this publication. Without the support of our advertisers, we could not provide meaningful coverage of city council, county board, and school board meetings. We also could not provide free obituaries, along with free birth, engagement, wedding, and military service announcements. Without the support of our advertisers, there would be no sports section, and no recognition of the accomplishments of our youth. And, we wouldn't be able to provide all of the great human interest stories that capture the interests and hearts of our readers. And, we thank our readers for not only supporting this publication by reading the newspaper cover-to-cover each week, but for also supporting the businesses that advertise in this publication. There is a symbiotic relationship between our advertisers and our readers, for which we are grateful.
Our team at the Fillmore County Journal loves what we do, and we thank you for letting us be a part of your lives every single week!
