Semper Gumby By Barb Jeffers barb@fillmorecountyjournal.com
Many things from his time in the military stick with Scott Johnson, including “Semper Gumby” or “Always Flexible” which is a phrase that comes from his former First Sergeant. Born in West Point, Nebr., Johnson’s family moved to Chatfield, Minn., when he was about a year old and he attended school there until fifth grade when they moved to Harmony, Minn. He graduated from Fillmore Central in 2001. In May of 2001, just weeks before graduating high school, at the age of 18, Johnson joined the Army Reserve. When asked why he joined the service, Johnson says, “Some of the reasons that I joined may sound somewhat cliché, but also were very real to me,” one of which was the fact that growing up he always knew his grandpa, Bernhard Erickson, was in the Navy. “I had always had a deep respect for veterans, and felt that as they had done their part to ensure my freedoms, I also owed that to my peers, and to the future generations,” states Johnson. He attended basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., followed by Advanced Individual Training (AIT) as a Combat Medic at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Tex. “Week four of my AIT contained a very eye opening incident that changed the attitude of my training for sure,” says Johnson, further explaining “that incident being the infamous day of September 11, 2001,” a day which every American remembers. “It was easy to see the change in seriousness of our training, as it was evident that we were not simply learning our craft for knowledge sake - we were learning in order to support our units in a time of war,” says Johnson. He was assigned as a medic to the 79th Military Police Company, which was located on Marion Road in Rochester, Minn., at the time and has since been moved to Wabasha, Minn. Johnson served with the 79th throughout the time he was in the Army, aside from when he was deployed. In December 2003, Johnson was deployed to Abu Ghraib Prison, later known as Baghdad Central Correctional Facility, with the 391st Military Police Battalion from Columbus, Ohio. The prison was filled with more than 7,000 detainees and no more than 500 U.S. Army, Marines, Navy and Air
Force personnel. “Our mission was to guard detainees that had been arrested and brought to the prison,” states Johnson. “Our arrival in country was expedited by the need to have the current units stationed at Abu Ghraib replaced. This need was driven by the photo scandal that occurred in November of 2003 that was brought to public light and public knowledge in April of 2004,” explains Johnson. “Needless to say, this scandal, both when it occurred and when it was brought to public light, definitely set the attitude of the prisoners and local public, and made our mission all the more difficult,” says Johnson. Johnson served in the military for 8 1/2 years, from May 2001 to November of 2009. He was discharged in November of 2009 at the rank of Specialist, or E-4. Although he is now out of the military, there are many things that will stay with him forever as Johnson says, “The Army has taught me a great many things” that will never be forgotten. “One thing that always sticks in my mind was a phrase that my 1st Sergeant always put at the end of his section in the monthly blotter: “Semper Gumby” - in other words he was reminding us to be Always Flexible,” notes Johnson. “This was often important to remember, as there were many times that the training or projects that were scheduled could often times either be rescheduled, or simply not happen,” he adds. “Something else I learned in the Army, past my medical training, was how close complete strangers can become by sharing the same experience,” Johnson states, as he explains, “one fear that I had as a medic being deployed with a new unit went past the normal anxiety, because I didn’t know anyone and being a fairly shy individual, this is often a difficult thing for me” in certain situations, this being one of them. “Even past this, though, is the fact that when you deploy, you are in a position that you know the people with you and you know that they have your back, and they know that you have theirs,” as Johnson explains further, stating, “as a medic, this feeling is heightened even more, in the fact that if they come to me, it potentially may be in the most dire of circumstances,” and they were counting on him to help them in their time of need. “So now, there is a large group
Scott Johnson proudly served our country in the Army and now lives with his family in Preston, Minn. Shown are Scott, his wife Patricia and children Xander, Slade and Paizley. Photo submitted of soldiers that I don’t know that I am trusting to have my back, and I am asking them to trust their lives to my ability as a medic,” but adds, “one thing that made it even the smallest bit easier was that I was not the only individual soldier from the 79th that deployed with this new unit,” as he went along with 14 others from his unit, so it helped to have a few people he knew along with him. “While deployed, I learned that there are some things that are universal language; a cry for help, the mourning of a lost loved one, and alternatively a laugh and a smile are all universally understood,” says Johnson. “The ability to work as a medic and offer something as small as a needed medication, or a bandage and IV to wounded detainees showed that it is possible to change negative feelings and preconceptions of people,” states Johnson, adding, “sometimes by offering to meet even the most basic of needs, you can change the hate that can be held inside some” and make a difference. The ability to be Always Flexible is relevant in every day civilian life every bit as much as while in the military, whether it is an unexpected traffic jam or a change in plans. “The ability to not be stunned into inactivity because of a change in what you had planned is a very great ability,” states Johnson. Johnson knows that he now has a “brotherhood that foregoes blood relatives,” as he says, “I have a second family that if things get rough, I know that I still have friends that
would support me through it all, because we have a friendship that was forged in such a way that we are not simply friends, rather we are family” in a very real way. Adjusting to life after being deployed is understandably difficult, as Johnson says, “Due to the public knowledge of the photo scandals in Abu Ghraib, there were many times that we sustained mortar attacks on our base. During the year that we were stationed at Abu Ghraib, we sustained attacks by 300+ mortar rounds and Rocket Propelled Grenades,” which of course, were very unnerving to say the least. “Because of this, I can still get a bit jumpy at unexpected loud noises, but have become more accustomed to the everyday noises again since returning home,” says Johnson. Johnson currently lives in Preston, Minn., with his wife Patricia and their children Xander-8, Slade-6, and Paizley-1, and works in Information Technology (IT) for Fillmore County. After serving his country, Johnson says, “I have a deeper love and respect for veterans, not only of veterans from my era, but even more so for veterans of past wars. Simply performing the duties that I did, and seeing what little action that I saw, and knowing the severity of some fighting that I did not experience both in these days and past wars, I deeply appreciate what other veterans gave to ensure my freedoms” and the freedoms of every U.S. citizen.
When asked what being a veteran means to him, Johnson replied, “ To me, being a veteran means that I deeply appreciate the sacrifices made by others in order to ensure that my freedoms and rights as an American stand,” which is what they fought for. “And because of this deep appreciation, I have chosen to stand up next in line, not only as a means of saying thank you to previous generation of veterans, but also as a means of trying to ensure that these rights are passed on to my children and future generations,” states Johnson. “Being a veteran means that I have friends and family around me that made sacrifices along with me in order to support me, whether it be serving with me, or supporting me in my service,” says Johnson, adding “without the support of my friends and family, I would not have been able to serve as well as I did.” “There is no veteran who does not have loved ones and friends behind them making sacrifices in order to ensure that they can serve to their fullest potential. Whether it is a spouse watching children while the veteran serves, or friends and family sending pictures, letters and treats in order to offer pieces of home no matter where the veteran is serving,” says Johnson. As we go through our daily lives and tasks, each of us needs to take time to say thank you and show respect to our veterans. And let’s all try to remember to be Always Flexible.

Easy ways to celebrate Veterans Day
Veterans Day is an annual holiday when veterans of the armed forces are honored and celebrated in the United States. Many people confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. While both days honor members of the armed forces, there's a distinction between the two holidays. Memorial Day, which is celebrated in May, is a day designated for remembering servicemen and servicewomen who died while serving. Veterans Day, which is observed in November, honors all military veterans. The role of the brave men and women who serve in the military is an important one, and it's one that warrants appreciation and celebration. The following are a few easy ways to celebrate veterans and their significant contribution to our country this Veterans Day. • Offer your thanks. Serving in
the military can feel like a thankless job, as those who have not served might not be aware of the risks men and women in the military take and the sacrifices they must make to protect our country and help the less fortunate across the globe. As a result, something as simple as saying "Thank you" to a current service member or military veteran can go a long way. Veterans know they don't serve in vain, but it's still a great idea to let them know how much you appreciate their efforts and sacrifices. • Help families of active military. Many service members are currently stationed and serving overseas, and their families back home may need or just appreciate a helping hand. Invite family members of active military over for dinner, offer to do chores like cutting the grass or shoveling the driveway when it snows or
help around the house if something needs fixing. Even if families of active members serving overseas appear to be getting along great, offer your friendship and let them know you're there to help should anything arise. • Visit hospitalized veterans. Unfortunately, many veterans are hospitalized after suffering an injury during a tour of duty. These veterans sacrificed their physical well-being to protect our way of life, and many spend extended periods of time in the hospital. Visiting a hospital to get to know a veteran and spend some time with him or her, sharing a few laughs and thanking them for their service, is a great way to celebrate the holiday and lift a veteran's spirits at the same time. Recruit friends and family members to visit hospitalized veterans as well. • Pay for a veteran's night out on the town. Like many people, veterans appreciate an escape from the daily grind. Men and women who want to show their appreciation to veterans can treat a veteran to a night out on the town. Have extra tickets to a ballgame or play? Donate them to a local VFW. Or if you see a veteran out on the town, offer to pay for his meal. • Thank businesses who support veterans. Many businesses show their gratitude to veterans by offering them free services on Veterans Day. When a local business shows its appreciation to veterans, patronize that business and let them know you appreciate their efforts to help veterans.

Veterans Day - a family affair By M ary Whalen mary@fillmorecountyjournal.com
The Cleveland family of Spring Valley has a long and rich relationship with the military. Patriarch of the the family, George Cleveland, was unable to enlist in the military during World War II due to a disability caused by a bout with polio when he was a child. He did, however, serve an enlistment with the Civilian Conservation Corps as a young man. “The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men from relief families as part of the New Deal,” states Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia. Mr. Cleveland married and spent his life working hard at
various jobs while he and his wife, Edith, raised eight children. Since they also did foster care, sometimes as many as 13 children found “home” with the Clevelands. Their biological children are: Leroy, James, Herbert (Gene), Patricia, Evelyn, Nelda, Gerald (Jerry), and Kenneth. Being a patriotic family, it’s no surprise that five of the Cleveland children, the five sons of George and Edith, entered the United States Military. Eldest son, Leroy Cleveland, enlisted in the Navy in the 1950s. Because he was under the legal age to enlist, his recruiter had to get special permission from his mother to allow the enlistment. Leroy traveled all over the world during his 21 years as a sailor. He visited countries in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean Sea. While in
the Navy, he served on every type of ship in existence except submarines. Aircraft carriers, destroyers, and mine sweepers were among the ships Leroy called home. His family still retains a few of the articles he obtained during his world travels. Leroy spent an additional 20 years working for the Department of Defense before retirement in Virginia. Following in his father’s footsteps, Leroy’s son, Mike, also committed 20 years of service to the US Navy. Second son, James Cleveland, worked on a commercial tug boat which during war time would have been considered the Merchant Marines. Unfortunately, he died as the result of an accident while on duty during his first trip down the Mississippi River in 1959. Gene Cleveland, third son of George and Edith Cleveland,
enlisted in the Air Force soon after graduation in 1964. Gene was stationed in Texas and Mississippi before being sent to Japan. Upon return to the States, he was stationed in Oregon. Using his military training, he worked for Harvey Aluminum and the Army Corps of Engineers. Still living in Oregon, Gene has retired but still does disaster relief for the Corps on occasion. Gerald, “Jerry” Cleveland, son number four, joined the Air Force in 1969. Initially stationed in Texas, Jerry states, “I didn’t even want to go to the east coast, much less go overseas. As luck would have it, I did two overseas tours back to back.” His first overseas journey took him to Okinawa, one of the southernmost islands of Japan, followed by an assignment near Istanbul, Turkey, where he spent nearly two years. Upon return,

he said, “ It was one of the best things that ever happened to me. The work was not exciting, but the travel was great. Getting to know how other people in the world live was an education in itself. I used my G.I. to help with tuition and worked enough to be the first member of my family to get a college degree.” Jerry graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Ag Education, then taught school and worked for the United States Postal Service. Ken, the Clevelands’ youngest son, was in the Army, where he worked as a truck driver. He is now retired and living in Spring Valley. George and Edith’s three daughters were not enlisted in the military, however, Pat’s husband was in the Army and Evelyn’s husband was in the Navy, so Veterans Day has special meaning. This family is just one example of the way citizens are able to serve their country.

to be unemployed. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall unemployment rate for veterans rose to 7.6% in January 2013. The unemployment rate of post-9/11 veterans or those who participated in the Gulf War reached 6.2%. • Upon retiring or being discharged, veterans may need help acclimating to life outside the military. His identity was unknown, and the gravesite is known as the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier." A guard from the Society of the Honor Guard stands watch over the grave each year on Veterans Day, and the president or another high-ranking member of the government places a wreath on the grave. Veterans Day occurs each year on November 11, marking the end of World War I. The day has evolved into a celebration and remembrance of the heroism of America's brave soldiers.

Wykoff dedicates new Veterans Memorial Park By H annah Wingert hannah@fillmorecountyjournal.com
The new Wykoff Veterans Memorial Park stands on the corner of Highway 80 and Gold Street. Photo submitted
It’s a project that’s been over two years in the making. Wykoff resident Harvey Schmidt knew he wanted to create a Veterans Memorial in Wykoff and so, in 2014, he formed the Wykoff Veterans Memorial Committee, which included Mike Holzer, who served as co-chair with Schmidt, Mark Anderson, LuAnn Hare, Lynn Kidd, Cheyanne Baker, John Baker, Ross Heusinkveld, Lyle Crowson, and Mitch Grabau. The late Wayne Winslow also served on the committee. The committee partnered with the Spring Valley Area Community Foundation or SVACF, which allowed them to gain 501(c)3 nonprofit status. Ground was broken for the memorial in fall 2015 on the corner of Highway 80 and Gold Street in downtown Wykoff. The land for the memorial was donated from the estate of Bud Kavanagh and the city of Wykoff, which inherited the parcel from Bill and Connie Bicknese. Construction took around a year and many volunteers donated their time, labor, and equipment to get it done. In spring,
2016, the first pavers were laid. So far, 143 pavers have been put down along the walkway at the memorial. Each one has the name of someone who served in the military, along with their branch and years they served. “They can be from anywhere, not just Wykoff,” LuAnn Hare noted about those the pavers honor. They can be purchased for any member of the military, living or deceased. The memorial isn’t finished yet, though. The cannon that used to sit by the Wykoff City Hall for many years was moved to the park and is having its wooden wheels redone by the Amish. The Wykoff Veterans Memorial Committee plans to install a plaque next to the cannon detailing its history. There is still landscaping that needs to be completed, along with more work on the granite markers. Donations are being accepted to help cover the costs. The Veterans Memorial features flags from all seven branches of the service: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, Prisoner of War, plus the Minnesota state flag and the Ameri-
can flag. Granite markers with gold medallions showing each branch’s seal also line the walkway. The memorial was dedicated at a service during the Wykoff Fall Fest on September 24 at 10 a.m. The public was invited to attend the solemn occasion at which two speakers gave speeches. The first was Norman Hecimovich, who served in the Army from 1952 through 1994. He was in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Desert Storm. The second speaker was Colonel Galen Lichty, a 1962 Wykoff High School graduate who served for 22 years in the Army and was granted several awards for his service. The dedication was closed with a gun salute to honor the veterans, along with the ringing of the Bells for Eternity, and Taps. The Memorial Committee will continue to care for the memorial with the help of the city. So far, 60 pavers have already been purchased for next year’s placement. The deadline for submitting paver forms is January 1, 2017 and those interested are asked to contact LuAnn Hare at (507) 352-2641.

American flag etiquette The American flag symbolizes many things to many people. While the American flag is proudly displayed in millions of buildings and homes across the United States yearround, it tends to draw special attention each summer, w h e n Americans celebrate their independence on July 4. The Flag Code formalizes and unifies the standards of respect that must be given to the flag, even containing specific instructions regarding how the flag should not be used. The following are some of the rules that govern how to display the American flag. Raising and lowering the flag According to USFlag.org, the American flag should be raised
quickly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. While the Flag Code suggests the flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, if it is displayed at night, it should be illuminated. The flag should be saluted
as it is hoisted, and when lowered that salute should be held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the final note of music, whichever is the longest. When displayed indoors, the flag should be displayed to the
right of the speaker, staging area or sanctuary. Any additional flags hanging in the room should always hang to the left of the American flag. When flags are grouped for display, the American flag should be in the center and at the highest point of any flag. In mourning The American flag is often displayed in mourning. When placing the flag at half staff, first hoist it to the peak for an instant before lowering it to a position halfway between the top and bottom of the staff. During mourning, when the time comes to lower the flag, it should once again be momentarily raised to the peak before it is lowered. The American flag is flown at

half staff when mourning designated, principal government leaders. It also must be flown at half staff upon presidential or gubernatorial order. When covering a casket, the American flag should be placed with the union at the head and over the left shoulder. The flag should never be lowered into the grave. Parading the flag When the American flag is carried in a procession, such as in a parade, the flag should always be to the right of the marchers when it is the lone flag being represented. When other flags are carried, the American flag may be centered in front of the others or carried to their right. Parade audiences should salute the flag as it passes in the procession. Flag restrictions There are many conditions under which the American flag is not to be used. These include: • The flag should never be used as a decoration. Use bun-
ting to decorate with the colors of the American flag, always ensuring the blue stripe of the bunting is on top. • The flag should not be used as part of advertising. The flag also should not be embroidered, printed or impressed on articles such as cushions, napkins, boxes, or anything considered temporary that is likely to be discarded after use. • The flag should not be used as part of a costume. The uniforms of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations are permitted to wear American flag insignias on their uniforms. • The flag is not to be used as a receptacle to carry, deliver, hold, or receive anything. The American flag is an enduring symbol of freedom and sacrifice to millions of people across the globe. The flag should always be displayed with the utmost respect and in adherence to the guidelines set forth by the Flag Code.
How to show appreciation for military personnel
Military personnel are unsung heroes whose sacrifices for their country make it possible for hundreds of millions of people to enjoy freedoms that many people across the globe do not have. In recognition of those sacrifices, many people want to show their appreciation to both active and retired servicemen and women. Fortunately, there are many ways to do just that. • Pitch in at home. According to the United States Department of Defense, the United States military currently deploys active duty personnel in nearly 150 countries. Many of those troops are separated from their families for months at a time, and that separation can make things difficult for their loved ones back home. If a neighbor's spouse is deployed overseas, offer to help around the house. Whether it's mowing their lawn, dropping their kids off at school or inviting the whole family over for dinner one night each week, such gestures can go a long way
toward easing the burden faced by spouses of deployed military personnel. • Send gifts to active personnel. Servicemen and women on active duty do not enjoy many of the luxuries that tend to be taken for granted back home. But men and women who want to show their appreciation can send care packages to active personnel serving overseas. An organization such as Operation Gratitude (operationgratitude. com), which to date has sent nearly 1.3 million care packages to active personnel, sends care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, personal hygiene products and handmade items. This provides active personnel a taste of home while also letting them know their extraordinary efforts are appreciated and not forgotten. • Volunteer at a veterans hospital. Unfortunately, many servicemen and women return home from their deployments with injuries or health conditions that require long-term
care. By volunteering at veteran hospitals, men and women can help veterans overcome their injuries and provide muchneeded help to staff at hospitals that could use a helping hand. Visit volunteer.va.gov for more information. • Make a financial donation. For those who want to support servicemen and women but don't have much free time to do so, financial donations can go a long way toward improving the quality of life of active and retired military personnel. Many programs work with veterans to improve their quality of life, and such organizations rely heavily on financial donations to make their missions a reality. The Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org), for example, works to honor and empower servicemen and women who incurred physical or mental injuries or illnesses on or after September 11, 2001. The organization relies on the generosity of individuals who want to help wounded mili-
tary personnel overcome their injuries and illnesses. Based on audited financial statements of the 2014 fiscal ending on September 30, 2014, 80.6 percent of total expenditures went to services and programs catering to wounded military person-
nel and their families, assuring prospective donors that their donations will go toward helping those in need. There are many ways that civilians can express their gratitude to active and retired military personnel.
