One Act team wins Sectionals By Barb Jeffers bjeffers@fillmorecountyjournal.com

Fillmore Central’s One Act Team has won first place at competition which was held on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Director Jackie Whitacre, along with the cast and crew, traveled to St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minn. and put forth an award-winning performance of The Importance of Being Earnest for the audience and judges to enjoy. Jackie Whitacre describes the play in the following way: “The Importance of Being Earnest is a play on words - it is important to be earnest so any man with that name should be a great catch; therefore, having the name of Earnest is important. Jack (Matt Gottormson) has used the name ‘Earnest’

when he comes to town and Gwendolyn (Danielle Zinsmaster) has fallen in love with the perfect name. Algernon (Lee Dyreson) also uses the name after his friend Jack explains that having two names is a great way to woo the ladies. When Algernon goes to the country to see Jack’s young ward, Cecily (Sydnie Huffman), she too falls in love with the name, not the man. Both gentlemen ask Dr. Chausable (Mitch Gibson) to christen them with the name Earnest, but even that may not help when Lady Bracknell (Ruth DeLano) and Ms. Prism (Lindsey Weiss) lend another twist to the couples’ plans. All the while Merriman (Kirby O’Connor), the butler, is looking on and laughing at the upper crust’s attempt at love.” The group received a large

trophy for their first place finish of the performance during the sectionals. The trophy will be displayed in the Fillmore Central High School in Harmony, Minn. Each member of the One Act Team also received a medal for their accomplishment. According to Jackie, the kids get “tons of confidence” from being involved in the One Act team as well as gaining important social skills. The students really do have fun together whether it is during rehearsals, performances, or even while taking photographs together for the Fillmore County Journal, the kids are light-hearted and thoroughly enjoy themselves. The Director, cast and crew are not acting when they say “we are family” while laughing and joking with each other. See ONE ACT Page 6 

Just six weeks past a rejected referendum for a new $15 million, early childhood through grade 5 facility, the R-P board once again took an in-depth look at what can be done with the district’s aging facilities. With four new members on the board, including Valerie Howe, Julie Koop, John Linder, Taylor Peterson, discussion covered public opinion, scope of plans, financial planning, and potential future plans. “I’ve done a lot of reflecting on the referendum and have come to the following conclusions,” began Superintendent Chuck Ehler who presented a prepared document to the board. The top five conclusions, based on post-referendum information were: •We have to keep the building in Peterson open and will need to plan to update the building. •Tax impact – Our citizens felt the tax impact was too great. •There is a belief that we can

invest in our current facilities vs. a new building. •We need to more directly involve our government entities (city of Peterson, Village of Rushford, and City of Rushford). •Our citizens and residents want a plan that is long-range and comprehensive. They want a “one and done” project. Based upon those reflections, Ehler went on to suggest the district move forward with five items. First, the hiring of architectural firm ATS&R and ICS Consulting to complete an educational analysis of the buildings. According to Ehler, this will provide a thorough engineering analysis of both buildings, including mechanical, electrical, heating, and technology assessments. Secondly, the hiring of David Drown Associates to complete a fiscal impact study. Used by the city of Rushford for both short and long-term project and financial planning, Ehler believes this would assist in a cooperaSee R-P SCHOOL Page 3 

tive effort between the district and city government in gauging the impact of the cost associated with updating our facilities or building a new facility for early childhood-grade 5 and grades 9-12. After an analysis is complete, Ehler would then suggest the district begin to update and improved the Peterson facilities through deferred maintenance funds. According to Ehler, this would consist of a new boiler, flooring (carpeting), windows, lockers, and covering the exterior in steel, and could be accomplished within three years. Next, an analysis of the elementary/high school buildings would determine all facets required to update the Rushford facilities. This would consist of new boilers, flooring (carpeting), windows, lockers, roofs, electrical, sprinkler system, etc. It was noted within the document that the update of the elementary/high school may involve bringing in portables to complete the updates in the 1906 and 1936 portions of the building. This update could be accomplished within two to three years. Lastly, Ehler suggests the efforts to secure financial assistance from the state continue. Legislative lobbyist Peg Larsen has been hired for this purpose. In addition, the district will continue its partnership with the Moose Lake School District, which was also

including those in a collaborative fashion. The model would allow the district to see the impacts of variables immediately on various types of properties including residential, homestead, and businesses. Such variables would include things such as project size, year, financing term, revenue streams, growing or shrinking tax base, current debt going offline, and more. Once the model is created, the district will hold a joint work session to test a variety of approaches to the project. Once consensus is developed through the process, findings will be finalized and guide how project financings will proceed in coming years. “It’ll be a valuable tool in longterm planning,” noted Ehler. “We’ll have a better handle on the See R-P SCHOOL Page 12 

impact study on the R-P school district buildings. This will assist in joint capital financial planning between the city and the district, as well as allow a comparative analysis of tax and utility data for surrounding districts and municipalities compared to those in the district. Mike Bubany, of David Drown Associates, also noted that the impact study would provide in-depth planning benchmarks, based on the comparative data, to establish reasonable costs for taxpayers. Decisions about projects would be made with these benchmarks in mind. Lastly, a computer modeling program would allow for the input of numerous variables. This would assist the district in effectively scheduling, structuring, and planning for a variety of projects, obs • Cabinet Hardware • Ceramic Tile • Storm Doors • Wallpaper

$15,000-20,000 would then double or triple the district’s costs. “It’s twice the money for the same issue,” stressed Ehler. “I can’t be supportive of double spending. I can assure you ICS Consulting and ATS&R figures are accurate.” New board member John Linder questioned the rise in costs. In 2002, the district held a referendum for an $18 million, early childhood to grade 12 facility, which was also defeated. “$18 million ten years ago and $15 million for a preK to 5 now?” he asked. “I can’t believe that costs are up that much. What was the difference in the model projected?” Ehler, who was not superintendent in 2002, was not sure, but would bring any information of that model to ATS&R and ICS Consulting for their analyses. The idea of assistance funding is still very much an issue as well. “Something we have to look out for,” cautioned Greg Smith. “The state still funds 80 percent of our budget. The state says this is what we want. They may not graciously approve a remodel.” Ehler confirmed that the state will give no assistance to any R-P plans to remodel the facilities. “Either option is going to costs us,” noted board chairwoman Angela Colbenson. “l’d like to see voters have an option A or B. There’s a lot of variables. We need to do it and do it well.” The board went on to proceed with the hiring of David Drown Associates to perform a fiscal

impacted by a natural disaster. Ehler believes there is potential in the future to secure some state funding. The district is seeking $20 million to assist with updating the facilities. “I hope to have building analyses completed by late spring. Hopefully, by late spring, we would also have a better feel for possible stat funding or assistance,” says Ehler. “I envision having a referendum ready for our citizens to vote on in late October. The goal is to have some alternatives for our citizens to consider and to make our plans a comprehensive long-term solution for our facility needs.” Ehler encouraged the board to set up a meeting with ATS&R and ICS Consulting. “It’s my assessment, if we maintain or update, let’s get the best bang for our buck. We need to take all things into consideration. Let’s do it right,” he continued. New board member Taylor Peterson, who’d been an outspoken citizen against the referendum plans, suggested the district budget for the facilities, with more coming out of the general fund, as opposed to being levied out through health and safety. “Whether new or renovated, it’s never one and done,” said Peterson. “I think we need more budgeting for facilities, with the rest carrying over for the next budget. I’d like to see two or three opinions from firms.” Ehler cautioned against multiple analyses, citing that the

C ommentary Over the cliff

By Stan Gudmundson I’ve quoted him before but it is appropriate to do so again. Historian Arnold Toynbee once said something to the effect that great countries and empires are not defeated, Col. Stan they commit Gudmundson suicide. The authors of the book I am John Galt tell us that Alan Greenspan, former chairman of the Federal Reserve, essentially believes that is exactly what the United States is doing. We are over the cliff. The following quote was written before November’s election. “Coming out the Great Recession, (Greenspan) sees the United States having crossed a fateful threshold, a point of no return, at which we’ve taken on too great a government debt and...made too great a commitment to government control of the economy. (Greenspan said) that we won’t recognize America 20 years from now, and that we won’t like what we see.” This past November, America voted to reaffirm and accelerate our country’s suicide. Republican leadership was quick to find fault with its own positions and blame symptoms rather the actual reason for the defeat in November. Symptoms such as immigration, taxation, birth control, abortion, and so on. Republicans completely failed to pinpoint the reason for our country’s problems. The cause is basic and simple. It is liberalism led by, as Tom Sowell calls him, the “warped” man in the White House. Failure to drive a stake through the heart of this loser collectivist ideology is the reason Republicans continue to lose. Over the years I’ve gotten to Editorial Cartoon

know people who are or were near the summit of their professions, in the Catholic Church, the military, the state department, and our business sector. Without fail they were and are extremely worried about another Obama term. What they told me is not comforting. Very senior military officers believe Obama is a disaster. In part it is because of a philosophy that doesn’t hold that America should be as strong as it is in comparison to other nations. In addition, they recognize that out of control spending makes the prospect of keeping and maintaining a powerful military totally impossible. Mark Steyn points out that “within this decade, the interest payments on the debt will be covering the entire cost of the Chinese military. America can fund the Pentagon or the People’s Liberation Army, but not both, not for long.” There will be severe consequences ultimately. If you think that this coming century will be less bloody than the 20th century without our strength and leadership, you are badly mistaken. My senior friends in the Catholic Church are also deeply worried. Our constitution guarantees freedom of religion, but this administration has so twisted that definition that it is now virtually meaningless. With the specious requirement for the Catholic Church and other denominations to provide services for practices for which these institution do not approve is nothing less than tyranny. Freedom to practice religion according to our beliefs? Gone. Very successful businessman don’t see much future for a strong economy either. That too goes back to the insane level of government spending that hugely reduces opportunity for a strong and growing economy. That is further minimized by increasingly onerous regulations. There

is more of course, like corrupt crony capitalism (fascism) which shuts down competition as businesses compete for government largess. But the “unofficial” opinions that surprised me most were those of very high ranking state department officials who have had extensive experience in Afghanistan plus the Middle East. They have given up on the Muslim world, believing there is no hope. There are moderate and liberal Muslims but the religion itself is not moderate. Witness the persecution of and exodus of Christians in the Muslim world. Moreover, the law of sharia, whether it arrives through violence or through other means, is a freedom destroying totalitarian system. If you do not understand its basis and what it means to a society you ought to spend a few almost guaranteed to be unpleasant weeks in Saudi Arabia, as I have, or to Iran. The Muslim world itself is being overrun and smothered with brutal and intolerant movements terrorizing to establish sharia. There are many ways to illustrate its hatred and extremism but nothing illustrates it better than viciously inhuman Taliban throwing acid into the faces of little girls who go to school to learn. One friend was so frustrated by the fighting and intolerance in Afghanistan that he told me that we should have killed all of the Taliban. I never expected to hear anything like that from this kind and gentle person. There is now nothing we can or should do to try bring the Muslim world into the 21st century. It is not an Arab or Muslim winter they have entered but an ice age. Our “not official” state department position sees only one reasonable way forward. Get out of that Muslim world and the Middle East completely. Isolate them and leave them

alone. That includes not allowing a single additional Muslim, as one recommended, to come into America. Too dangerous, he thinks. But our ability to leave the Muslim world is contingent on the west being completely energy independent. We must pursue that posthaste. With this administration however, energy independence is a pipe dream. If you voted for Obama believing that things will be better over the next four years, you are completely daft. I suppose there are some who might be offended by the word “daft.” Let me be a little more precise. If you are an Obama voter who believes America will be better off in four years, you have a screw loose. And probably more than one. The overall result of the November vote is a hugely weakened America, a more tyrannical government, and a far more dangerous world. Plus a lowered standard of living and poorer healthcare. And it won’t be George Bush’s fault. Do you think I am wrong? As time goes by I will unhappily document why I am not.

Letter about R-P School Board To the Editor, December was my last RushfordPeterson School Board meeting, after serving one four-year term. Neither I nor my family is RP alumni, since we have lived here only 13 years. With this background, I was surprised when people, many who are from here, would say to me that they would never serve. One even said that she would rather serve on City Council before the School Board. These poor perceptions of what public service entails are unfortunate. Disparaging comments critical of RP School Board made during the referendum on the new school could only feed negative views. Some school communities have difficulty finding people willing to serve. Our community has not come to that point, and, I write to focus attention so that does not happen. My Board service was a rewarding experience, one that I was privileged to have. No one ever yelled at me, or called me at all hours to complain. The Board meetings were, and continue to be, an open, respectful exchange where all were heard – if they wanted to be. I learned so much. Public service is an honor that more should try. The rewards, and the shared responsibility to take part, outweigh the downside, even taking into account the criticism, valid or otherwise, that may come from others. Please consider constructive support to all of your publicly elected officials, instead of “armchair quarterbacking.” Or, more important, consider serving in an office, and be a role model of community service for your children, family, and friends. Thank you for the privilege to serve on the RP School Board. Sincerely, Beth Stanford Rushford, MN

The Minnesota Service Cooperative Knowledge Bowl competitions are interdisciplinary academic contests for students. Junior High Knowledge Bowl is for students in grades 6-9. During the contest, teams of students compete in written and oral rounds by answering questions related to all areas of learning, typical of secondary educational programs. Questions test students’ recall, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. This competition provides a format for student growth centered around academics. Teams consist of six students (six competing in the written round and five competing in each oral round).

City Clerk Joel Young explained the report required by the state every two to three years determines if the city treats both genders equally. According to the predicted pay line, fifty percent of both male and female employees are below the line. He suggested the city may need to bring in a payroll consultant within the next couple of years. •Michelle Thorson was hired again for the 2013 season as swimming pool director. The position paid $4,300 in 2012. She will enjoy the same percent of increase in compensation as other city employees for 2013. •Councilor Jacobson reported for the Park and Recreation Committee. At that meeting Tim Gossman and Jenny Bradt discussed the possibility of a parking area at the beginning of the Lost

Creek Hiking Trail. •Councilor Robert Pederson reported for the Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC). He listed the five concepts of historic preservation. 1)Historic buildings and sites are scarce, non-renewable cultural resources and should be treated as critical assets for community development. 2)Historic preservation is an important public service and a legitimate responsibility of city government. 3)Not everything that is old is worth preserving: protective measures should focus on significant historic resources. 4)Saving significant resources for the benefit of future generations is always in the public interest. 5)Effective historic preservation policies are those which create a partnership between the owners of historic properties and city government. The Official Legal Newspaper for Fillmore County

Fillmore County Sports Lucky #13 and Lucky #11 By Paul Trende It takes a very good team to go once through the 3-Rivers schedule without a defeat, to win thirteen straight games. The newly ranked (#8 in A) Rushford-Peterson Trojans boys had a chance to do each. The road to those accomplishments, and to staying tied atop the 3-Rivers, went through the last team to down Tom Vix’s club, Lewiston-Altura. That loss occurred on December 11, in two overtimes, by one (72-71): an instant classic. The re-match probably wasn’t destined to live up the first meeting. It was still a hotly contested affair in front of an awfully full Rushford auditorium between two rivals. Through much of the 1st half, the Cards rode the efforts of senior Josh Ehlenfeldt. The 5’7” shot-taker pumped in 14 points. He helped his team lead by as many as eleven late. Enter the youngster who turned out to be the man of the night. Trojan sophomore Charlie Krambeer hit backto-back threes late to cut L-A’s lead to 30-25 at the half. The teams battled defensively in the 2nd half, R-P trying to solve L-A’s long 2-3 zone, L-A trying to beat R-P’s 1-3-1 trap/zone. Neither offense was consistently successful. Midway through the half, the Trojans went back to Krambeer. He made threes on consecutive possessions. The later gave R-P their first lead, 41-39, since 8-5. L-A responded by scoring 5 out of the next 6 points. Krambeer then nailed another trifecta (3:00). Again, he pushed R-P into the lead (45-44). Jorli Hauge then made two huge defensive plays on back-to-back possessions. He drew a charge and then blocked a shot, following the latter up with a bucket on the other end (47-44 R-P). The Trojans made 4 of 6 FTs down the stretch. They denied L-A defensively (the Cards went score-

less over the final 7-plus minutes). Via a final of 51-44, the Trojans got their 13th victory in a row. Lucky #11, sharp-shooting 6’2” sophomore Charlie Krambeer led the way (18 pts, 6-11 deep shooting, 6 rebs, 3 stls off the bench). Alex Vix (12 pts) and Austin O’Hare (10 pts, 6 rebs) also reached double figures. Cole Kingsley had 6 points but 8 assists. Ehlenfeldt (24 pts) was the only L-A player in double figures. Nate Reps had 8 points and 13 rebounds. Free throws were one big discrepancy (R-P 11 of 25, L-A 1 of 2). Krambeer’s deep shooting (6 of 11) versus the rest of R-P from range (3 of 18) was another. The win keeps R-P (11-2, 14-2) tied for 1st place with PEM (11-2, 11-6). Southland (11-3, 14-5) is in 3rd. Caledonia (8-4, 11-5), L-A (8-5, 10-7), and Chatfield (8-5, 9-8) are 4-5-6. Burro Winners If one had to place bets on the winner of the Lanesboro/MabelCanton boys-girls series, conventional wisdom would have picked the M-C girls and Lanesboro boys. Each entered with much better records and having already downed their counterparts once. The Lady Burros kicked conventional wisdom right in the buttocks. They outplayed their M-C counterparts. Lanesboro ran the flex-cut well, and junior F Kaia Hongerholt exploited it with her passing. She assisted nine Burros buckets (added 7 rebs, 2 pts). Johanna Bearson did the bulk of the scoring (game-high 18 pts, 8 rebs). Alisa Warnes added 10 and 7 as Lanesboro, save for an early 4-2 deficit, led the entire way enroot to a 45-34 victory. M-C struggled to crack the Burros 2-3 zone. Sara Lind (9 pts, 11 rebs) and 8th grader Coranda Vickerman (9 pts, 3-6 from deep) led M-C. Christy Welscher (7 pts, 13 rebs, 3 blks) and Lydia Geving (5 pts, 7 assists) also did work.

MARSHALL OELTJEN Kingsland Boys Basketball

Kingsland senior Marshall Oeltjen is A.O.T.W. The Knights were only 1 and 2 in three games, but that record can’t be put on Oeltjen. The physical 6’2” power forward averaged 19.7 PPG over the three games. He (unofficially, but likely) leads the Knights in scoring and rebounding on the season, and as has stepped up big-time after playing only a bit part as a junior. Photo by Paul Trende

A night later, the boys took the floor at Mabel-Canton Coliseum. Conventional wisdom held strong and firm. The Burro junior duo of Kole Ruud and Lucas Rogers made it hold firm. Early on, the Burros pulled a fast one and fed 6’2” senior F Isaac Freese in the post. Freese delivered Lanes’ first six points. Then things got back to normal. Erik Peterson bombed away. Rogers bombed away. Ruud bombed away. M-C never had a scoring draught. They just exchanged four points, for six and nine, six points, for nine and twelve. Courtesy of 9 made trifectas (18 attempts), the Burros rolled to a 45-28 halftime lead. Roger’s 2nd half perimeter exploits kept the Lanes lead big. M-C scored the final 13 points to make the final Burros 68, Cougars 54. Ruud (23 pts, four 3s in the 1st half, 6 assists), Rogers (21 pts, 6-11 from deep, 11 rebs), Peterson (12 pts, four 3’s), and Freese (10 pts, 10 rebs) all reached double figures. Noah Manning (17) and Justin Ward (13) led M-C. Lanesboro made 14 of 34 threes. current tax impact and projected project impacts.” The minimum cost of this analysis and model is $2,125 and should not exceed $2,250. The cities of Rushford Village and Peterson have been asked to participate as well, to provide a thorough look at the impact to the entire district. The workshop, with analysis details, is expected to be held within three months. In other news, the district is the recipient of a Minnesota Cultural Grant in the amount of $6,995. The grant was used to complete the history of the school buildings at the elementary/high school facility, with Tammy Lindberg as facilitator. The long-range goal will of this study will be to get the 1906 and 1936 buildings listed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings. The designation would allow the district to apply for future funding through the Minnesota Cultural HeriDon’t Miss!

tage Grant Program. With the report other grants may be sought, including potential assistance for roof work and tuck pointing to the buildings. The district will be seeking bids for installing a security system for the main exterior doors at the elementary, middle, and high school facilities. The plan would encompass a camera and intercom setup, which would require visitors to be buzzed in by staff. The district is exploring the option of using individually programmable keyfobs to parents, but is unsure due to cost. Still, all on the board appeared excited at the security plan. “I’m thrilled to see it on the agenda,” enthused new board member Julie Koop. The next regularly scheduled board meeting is Monday, February 25, at 5:30pm, in the high school biology room. Please note the date change from the third to fourth Monday of the month, to accommodate the Presidents’ Day holiday. The public is encouraged to attend.

socialscenes A View From The Woods By Loni Kemp

©SallyKeating2011

Seasonal Surrender Now is the time of hunkering down. I’m not leaving home, not reaching out, not outwardfocused. These precious deep winter weeks are giving me permission to slow down, look inward and rest. I rise on a winter-storm-warning morning, elated to know today I have to stay off the roads and out of the woods. I light a fire, marveling at the success of my newly discovered method of starting a fire. Big logs on the bottom, medium sticks laid

crosswise, topped with kindling, a shred of birchbark, and a crispy pinecone. I light the birchbark, the pine cone flares up, the kindling starts to burn, and—here’s the thing I never knew before— the fire naturally drops down as it catches. No more tending and laying on sticks and logs, hoping not to put the little fire out. The fire finds its own way down to the big wood. Reflecting on new discoveries and perfecting life habits is a satisfaction of winter. Some people hate January. I, too, sometimes get a sinking sensation on New Year’s Day, putting away the holiday decorations while noting that there is almost nothing on the new calendar. No parties, no concerts, long nights, little to look forward to in a drab, brown and white world. Then I realize I’m ready for this season. It is the time to slow down. Now the whole day, a doubly precious Sunday with no work expectations, spreads before me

Happy 13TH Birthday

in endless quiet possibilities. I eat my granola and yogurt, listening to the taps of freezing rain on the window, and do the crossword puzzles from yesterday’s Star Tribune. I can read all morning if I want to, or catch the Sunday political shows on TV. I may wander over to the piano and pick up the Bach Two Part Inventions I’ve been working on. Every note must be fingered perfectly, or else Bach’s devilish melodies fall off the musical cliff when I run out of fingers. While practicing, my brain may drop into the zone of total absorption, or wander away in trite musings. Either way is fine. This could be a great day to inventory and order my spring seeds. Maybe I’ll cook green pea soup from summer’s frozen harvest, or blend up a batch of hummus. I’ve got some mending to do, many unseen movies recorded, and a letter to write. Best of all might be a little nap, or a long corpse pose after doing yoga, which amounts to the same thing. Deep winter is the time for these personally rewarding activities, too easily trumped the rest of the year by more urgent tasks, meetings, client invoices, laundry, and social events. We crave the busy required and regular commitments that give our lives shape and focus the rest of the year. Yet these leisurely, almost selfish, hours of deep winter provide nourishment for our souls. What we love to do in solitude gives us comfort and

Hummus

1 or 2 garlic cloves 1-15 ounce can of garbanzo beans (chickpeas) Juice of a lemon 4 Tablespoons tahini (sesame seed paste, optional) 2 Tablespoons olive oil Salt and Pepper More olive oil and paprika to garnish Drop garlic cloves into a food processor or blender to chop finely. Drain garbanzos, saving the liquid, and add beans to processor and blend until smooth. Add a small amount of the reserved liquid if needed. Add lemon juice, tahini and olive oil, and process. Add salt and pepper to taste. Scoop into a bowl and top with generous coat of olive oil and sprinkling of paprika. Dip with warm pita slices, tortilla chips, or carrot and other veggie sticks. Or, spread on bread or crackers for a light lunch. Traditionally served with black olives. Hummus is tasty and healthy as is, or jazz it up with an optional ingredient like chopped parsley, ground cumin, hot sauce, roasted garlic, roasted peppers or dried tomatoes.

Love and Life

By Megan Kiehne Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and people are wondering what to get that special someone. Do diamond earrings mean you’re committed? Are chocolates and a fuzzy stuffed bear too kiddish? Should you give pink, red, or white roses? Or is that significant other Megan Kiehne expecting a candlelit dinner at a five star restaurant? There are so many options of gifts and activities to do to tell that certain someone how special they truly are. Valentine’s Day is another com-

mercial holiday businesses adore. A study in 2012 by National Geographic indicated that businesses generated $17.6 billion in retail sales in the United States. Fifty two percent of United States consumers plan to send at least one valentine. I challenge you to be creative and tell your loved ones how special they are, and it won’t even break your bank account. Don’t get me wrong, I love Valentine’s Day and am a hopeless romantic, but how did this holiday get started? By doing some research I found some interesting answers. Evidence of Valentine’s Day goes back to St. Valentine. According to the Huffington Post, one legend says, Valentine actually sent the first “valentine”

greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor’s daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today.” Did you know there are three types of love? The first type of love is eros. Eros love is a romantic relationship based on physical attraction and the feeling of “falling in love.” Eros love is a result of fleeting emotion and is focused primarily on “self-benefit.” Second is philos love which is based on mutual “give and take” and is a higher form of love than eros. Philos love is defined as a friendship between two people which leads to a more long-term, lasting relationship. Third, the highest level of love is agape. Agape love

is divine, unconditional, and selfsacrificing love like a mother gives to her child. All three types of love are important to one’s physical, mental and spiritual wellness. The human race can’t survive without love. Every kind of love is present and important in one’s life. Don’t be afraid to tell someone how you feel, express yourself. I’m only 18 years old, what do I know about love, right? But I’ve grown up in a home that’s full of love and I have had my share of crushes and relationships. Valentine’s Day is not just reserved for couples! Valentine’s Day is a day dedicated to love. Tell your parents, grandparents, best friend, or pet how much you appreciate them and love them. Giving a valentine or doing something special extends your feelings. Don’t forget to tell the special people in your life that

“Our C hristmas Blessing” Happy 12TH

you love them throughout the year. Even though this is an annual holiday, it doesn’t mean there isn’t love 365 days of the year! Gandhi simply states, “Where there is love, there is life,” and I fully agree with him. Megan Kiehne is a senior at Lanesboro High School. She is one of 8 area students participating in the Journal Writing Project, now in its fourteenth year.

Spring Valley may receive Economic Development Grant By Gary Peterson Spring Valley could be receiving $265,000 from the State of Minnesota in the form of an Economic Development Grant. The money is a result an extension of the Rochester .5 percent sales tax. The citizens of Rochester approved the ballot question on November 6, 2012, authorizing that extension. The total amount of funds to be shared by 17 communities is $5,000,000. The Sales Tax Distribution Agreement is

to be approved by the Legislature. The proceeds of the tax exempt bond issue provided to Spring Valley may only be used for capital costs directly related to an eligible economic development project. Pre-show music begins at 7:10 p.m. with Nick Danielson, and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Highlights will include an appearance by Brad Boice as Elvis, songs like “The Mick-

ey Mouse Club” and “Rock Around the Clock,” memories, fads, slang, and the hula hoop of the 1950s, Diane’s Delectable Doggie Treats (an audience participation give-away), “Betty Crocker,” and a sneak peak of the Lanesboro Community Theater’s production of “Leaving Iowa.” In sponsor interviews, we will learn about Pedal Pushers Café with Angie Taylor, the Fillmore County Journal with Jason Sethre, and the Lanesboro BP/S&A Petroleum. The “Over the Back Fence” Community Variety Show is a program of the Lanesboro Arts Center. The show took shape 18 years ago in the St. Mane Theatre, with many of the same cast members involved. “Over

www.mrsbsinn.com “Terry & Ginger Neumann , the proprietors of Mrs B’’s Historic Lanesboro Inn are proud to announce that we have a completely new website. We felt that we needed a website that was up to date and more user friendly for both desktop, laptop, cell and tablets, as old technology doesn’t cut it anymore. We wanted a site that was easy to navigate without a lot of fluff so you can look, decide and book all in one place. We chose SMG web design of Preston, MN as they had what we wanted. The first week it went live, a guest checking in said “I really like your new website. So easy to navigate and make our reservation!” Thank you Michelle and Tyler for all your hard work!”
