Brown’s Tire & Battery remains strong after more than 30 years in business trimmed out from the original back bumper, logos and lights included. It wasn’t something Brown had been looking for, but he stumbled upon it on an online auction this past winter and placed a bid. “There were other bids and I told my wife, ‘I’m going to bid one more time - that’s it,’” Brown chuckles, remembering how he got the winning bid. Eager to find out more about the couch’s origin, Brown was able to track down Gieger via
Facebook after reading the details of how it was made in an old newspaper article. It turned out Gieger and her husband originally had the piece in their own repair shop before selling it to another gentleman. Brown proudly shows of the couch, flipping on the tail lights, and smiling. “Everything has changed and we grew with it,” he recalls. “If you stay the same you’ll be left behind. Every day is a new challenge and you have to go after it.”
AUTO REPAIR Gary Brown, of Brown’s Tire & Battery, with the 1955 Chevy Bel Aire custom couch he recently acquired. Photo by Kirsten Zoellner By Kirsten Zoellner For Gary Brown, the secret of a good business comes down to the essentials. “We work hard and we’re honest. We try to treat people in the way they would want to be treated. We don’t play games.” Brown is the second generation owner of the business, which was started in 1986. Brown’s father, Art, had been the owner and operator of the Arendahl Store, but when the economic farm crisis of the ‘80s hit, the elder Brown was forced to close the store. In 1985, he had the opportunity to rent a building, just south of Rushford, from Rustad Hog Equipment. The shop officially opened in February 1986 as farm tire shop only. Brown rented the building the first
year, found success, and purchased it. Gary, fresh out of school joined the business at just 22. “It’s really evolved from there,” he says. “Initially, it was the front shop only. As we grew, we ran two shops; one in front and one in back.” In 1999, he bought the entirety of the business from his father. In those years, the building has been remodeled or added to five times. One addition added 5,000 square feet in one project. Allowing Brown’s to offer more to customers, the expansions allowed for three hoists in each shop, with tires, alignment, brakes, oil changes, and other maintenance in the front shop and transmission, engine, and electrical work in the back shop.

“We built as we grew,” says Brown. “It happened faster than expected.” While there are no current plans for further expansions, there are also no plans any time soon for Brown to retire. Another key to Brown’s success, as he will readily tell you, is who you work with. “We have very good help,” he says, smiling, while getting joking glances from his staff. “We’ve also been in this so long that suppliers have become really good friends of mine. It’s easier to do business with good people.” Through the years, Brown says the biggest highlights has easily been people thanking them for what they do. He’s hoping they’ll come take a peek at another something that’s recently brought him some joy; the custom-made, 1955 Chevy Bel Aire couch that now adorns his lobby. Made in New Ulm by Linda Gieger, an avid ‘50s decor enthusiast, the red and white, striped leather piece is

Hyland schools competition
Mike Hyland stands next to the 2016 and 2017 first place trophies from the annual school bus races at Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, Minn. Hyland and his pit crew have won first place in the bus races for four years running. Photo by Barb Jeffers By Barb Jeffers “It’s not your average ride on the bus,” says Mike Hyland, who has been involved in school bus racing since 2014. Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, Minn., began holding school bus races in 2012 and with overwhelming interest from fans, the event became an annual tradition and a friendly competition between local schools. The first year of the school bus races Kingsland school did not have a bus entered in the race and Hyland thought something should be done about that. Hyland explains that he called some friends and said, “Hey we gotta get a bus together; we’ve got to race out here because it’s our local track,” and Kingsland needs to be represented. “We got together and did it and got into it and have been in it ever since,” notes Hyland. The pit crew includes Troy Lange, Jake Merkel, Peggy Merkel, Mike Becker and Troy Leutink. When the group entered the
school bus races at Deer Creek Speedway for the first time in 2013, Hyland did not drive the bus but the next year he got his opportunity and passed the test with flying colors as he took first place. Hyland has an impressive winning streak going, as he has won first place every year since, giving he and his pit crew four trophies so far, which they donate to the Kingsland school to place in the trophy cases. Proceeds from ticket sales goes toward student activities for preschool through sixth grade in all participating schools with the Kingsland School Parents group helping disperse the funds. “It’s good for the community,” states Hyland to get people together at the races and adds “it’s a nice deal for the school and the kids,” as well. Some people may think that going to school buses races would not be the most heart pounding and unpredictable kind of race to watch, but as Hyland explains,

the races are exactly that. “It’s exciting; you’re not sure what’s going to happen next because you can’t watch everything,” states Hyland. “We get up to around 60 mph,” says Hyland, which is surprisingly fast for the bus which Hyland approximates at 12,000-14,000 pounds. For the lengthy and heavy buses, getting around the corners of the track can be difficult but often provides terrific entertainment. “During the race, coming around the corners, they are fast enough if you can get the front end to bite, to turn, the inside tires of the bus will come off the ground and you can hear it and feel it; the engine speeds up, they are spinning and you’re not going - you can feel it come back down and away you go,” says Hyland. “We’re kind of running those buses right on the edge; we’re maxing them out,” he states. Buses have tipped on their sides, giving the drivers an unforgettable experience and the crowd an added thrill. “We have dents on top above the windows from other buses hitting up on top there,” which describes how exhilarating the bus races can get. Hyland admits to being a bit of an adrenaline junkie, saying, “I’ve always been into that kind of stuff; the racing, the machines, whatever,” he explains. “I’ve raced other cars out on that track too,” notes Hyland, as he actually helped to build the track and has been a sponsor. He volunteers his time every year working on the track doing necessary maintenance. “I’ve driven a lot of things around that track,” he says. A few things must be done with the bus to get it in racing form, including removing all glass, removing seats, putting a screen in the front windshield, placing the battery inside the bus, beefing up the front bumper, making sure they have good tires and most importantly, a five point harness is installed because “you don’t want to be thrown out of that seat,” Hyland comments. The bus they have used since Hyland began racing was donated by Ronnie Merkel and the pit crew volunteers their time and necessary materials to get the bus ready for racing and maintain it each year. Hyland Motor Co. donates the use of their shop to do maintenance and also supplys the semi to haul the bus to the racetrack. The bus races at Deer Creek Speedway take place on June 16 this year, so plan on attending to see for yourself just what these buses can do.

more money at the problem and can’t even assure us that will fix it.” Lawmakers have introduced legislation that would allow the governor to reduce spending within his administration by $10 million in order to make the needed MNLARS down payment for additional money. Another bill is also being introduced that directs the Commissioner of Public Safety to study the feasibility of using a commercial vendor to “develop, deploy, and maintain” a system to replace MNLARS. “What we’ve done to deputy registrars and the people of Min-
nesota is unconscionable,” Representative Davids said. “We need a bill to reimburse our local deputy registrars for their added expenses due to the state’s incompetence.” Reicks concluded by saying, “We never had lines in our office before and now we can have 15 customers waiting. We had to hire another employee in order to keep up. It’s a good thing that people are understanding and patient. We appreciate that!” Reicks is encouraged that Minnesota is in the process of piloting a driver’s license system before it goes public. “Maybe they learned a lesson with MNLARS,” he said.

Body Shop, Inc. Kurt Reicks, Maren Gilsrud and Dawn Ristau are ready to help customers at the DMV/Auto Licensing Bureau in Preston. Deputy Registrar Reicks said, “Unfortunately the new Minnesota Licensing and Registration System (MNLARS) is causing a lot of headaches, but if you come to our office, we can help you get your questions answered. I urge people to shop local!” Photo by Gabby Kinneberg By Annie Lewis The new MNLARS (Minnesota Licensing and Registration System) has been riddled with problems, despite nearly 10 years of preparation and $100 million in expenses. Many deputy registrars have had difficulty processing applications and Minnesotans have been unable to obtain car titles and tabs in a timely manner. According to Kurt Reicks, Deputy Registrar for the DMV in Fillmore County, “It’s been a nightmare!” MNLARS replaced the old sys-
tem on July 24, 2017. The old system was shut down on Friday and the new one up on Monday. “Before it went public, we had only one day of training,” Reicks said. “It covered simple transactions and was pretty informal. They didn’t pilot the system before launching it to the public, and as a result, it has a lot of issues. It’s been extremely frustrating for us and for our customers.” Reicks has been deputy registrar for the DMV/Auto Licensing Bureau, 201 Fillmore St. W. in Preston for almost 29 years 104 Main Street South Chatfield, MN 55923

and he has never seen anything like this before. “The old system wasn’t broken, but because it was 20 years old, they said it needed to be replaced. It was supposed to be a customer-based system, but there’s so many glitches, that it just causes more delays and a lot of unhappy Minnesotans.” According to Reicks, special license plates, i.e., disabled, personalized, veterans, etc. are among the biggest challenges. “It’s hard to describe, but what should be an easy process, just isn’t with this new system.” Reicks said that obtaining new vehicle titles and getting registration tabs are problems too. “There are nearly 200,000 title transactions that are not getting processed in St. Paul because of the new system. I urge people not to mail their tabs to the state, because they’ll cash your check and may not mail the tabs. Shop local is all I can say. Visit our office and we’ll try to get what you need in a timely manner.” The Dayton administration said they had no idea MNLARS was having problems. Yet a recent KMSP-TV investigative report found that three years ago a MNLARS analyst told the Governor’s Office directly that the program was not ready for launch, and warning signs of program failure were repeatedly ignored. Recently, state government officials told lawmakers that another $43 million was needed in order to keep it operational. According to State Representative Greg Davids (R-Preston) he’s not sure that money will fix it. “The administration owns this debacle,” Davids said. “They knew it wasn’t going to work three years ago. Now they want us to throw

By Sgt. Troy Christianson Minnesota State Patrol Question: I noticed that the horn on my vehicle does not work. Is there a law that that says a vehicle must have a working horn and when it can be used? Answer: Ac c o rd i n g to state law, your vehicle Troy H. must have a Christianson horn that’s “in good working order and capable of emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than 200 feet. The horn or other warning device must not emit an unreasonably loud or harsh sound or a whistle.” I believe the definition of whistle is quite clear, and use common sense to determine if a horn is unreasonably loud or harsh. If it’s too loud or harsh, it could violate a local noise ordinance. Minnesota law says it’s legal to honk a horn when it’s “reasonably necessary to insure safe operation” on the road. For example, that’d include warning other vehicles, pedestrians or animals as needed to avoid a crash. If it’s not a safety situation, it’s illegal to honk the horn on the road. Excessive or illegal use of the horn could result in a road rage scenario, so only use it when needed for safety. You can avoid a ticket — and a crash — if you simply buckle up, drive at safe speeds, pay attention and always drive sober. Help us drive Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths. If you have any questions concerning traffic related laws or issues in Minnesota send your questions to Sgt. Troy Christianson – Minnesota State Patrol at 2900 48th Street NW, Rochester, Minn. 55901-5848. Or reach him at Troy.Christianson@state.mn.us.

of the many benefits of changing air filters. One such benefit pertains to fuel efficiency. The automotive website CarsDirect. com notes that studies have shown that changing clogged air filters can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 10 percent and save drivers as much as 15 cents per gallon of fuel. environment. When vehicle air filters are clogged, air flow to the engine is reduced, adversely affecting vehicle emissions. Clean filters increase air flow to the engine, reducing vehicle emissions as a result. Clean air filters also can help drivers get more out of their vehicle investments. Designed to trap dirt and debris, clean air filters prolong engine life by preventing such particles from damaging engine components. Drivers can check their owners' manuals for air filter replacement guidelines, but manufacturers generally advise drivers change their air filters every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. Such a repair is inexpensive but can go a long way toward ensuring vehicles operate as efficiently as possible.
