Fillmore Central Community Education - One Block At A Time activities that focus on a standard from our curriculum, Core Knowledge Curriculum. Activities are usually hands-on and cover a wide range of abilities including cutting, writing, coloring, role playing, retelling stories, and learning colors, shapes and letters, to early math and science concepts. Pre-literacy skills are also an important component of our 4/5 school readiness program. Much of the year revolves around early literacy and helping students move on to the next step. At the beginning of the school year, we really focus on letter identification and we have now moved on to beginning letter sounds. Throughout the school year, we have worked on writing our letters in both uppercase and lowercase, as they are encouraged to know both going into Kindergarten. Letter knowledge is not the only piece to the early literacy puzzle. Rhyming is a big part of being able to increase awareness in different sounds in language. Throughout the school year, we have been working on identifying rhyming words and what makes a word a rhyming word. We begin each day with literacy. Special Education students are fully integrated into our classrooms allowing friendships to form and differences to be

The mission of our early childhood programs is providing children with successful starts through healthy, nurturing, learning environments. School Readiness School Readiness offers a preschool experience to students that are 3-5 years of age. The 3/4 year olds have two options: Monday/Wednesday session or a Tuesday/Thursday session. These sessions both meet 8:30am – 10:30am. Transportation is provided for the Monday/Wednesday session only. Our 4/5 year old classes meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There is a morning class from 8:30am - 11:30am and an afternoon class from 12:10 3:10. Transportation is offered for our morning class only. Our primary goal is to welcome students to the school setting and help them feel comfortable in a classroom when they enter Kindergarten. Play time is an essential part of our program. Play time provides many opportunities for students to grow in conversational skills, imagination, social skills (such as getting along with others), as well as fine and gross motor skills. We also have structured

Women, Infants, & Children (WIC)
WIC provides no-cost nutrition education and supplemental food for pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to age five. To receive WIC, you must be a resident of Minnesota and meet income requirements.
Child and Teen Check-Up (C&TC)
These checkups are complete well child visits for infants, children, and teens. C&TC’s are a health care benefit for Minnesotans, age birth to 21, enrolled in Medical Assistance or Minnesota Care. Early years are learning years with Rushford-Peterson Community Education Rushford-Peterson Community Education offers many opportunities for early childhood aged children and their families. Our Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) classes are open to birth-5 year olds. Parents and children attend the themed classes together. Classes meet on Thursday evenings from 6-7:30pm or on Friday mornings from 9-10:30 am. The Spring Session of ECFE starts on April 18th and 19th. Along with offering classes, ECFE also sponsors events the whole family can attend
together, as well as events that highlight and celebrate special family relationships! This school year, families have already enjoyed Math Wizards Night, Santa’s Workshop, ECFE Katy Smith, Open Gyms, 2011 Teacher of the Year and Reading Wizards. Our WIC (Women, Infants and Children) and Maternal/ Child Health programs are designed to provide information and good nutrition during pregnancy - preparing moms for that gift of motherhood. Our Maternal/Child Health Specialist offers education on pregnancy, delivery, parenting, car seats, breastfeeding - information parents want to know. Enrolling in the Follow Along Program (FAP) begins a sharing of information between us about your child from birth through age three giving you a chance to see how developmental milestones are being met and how you can help her meet her next set of milestones and challenges. If your child is enrolled in a Minnesota Health Insurance Plan (MA, U-Care or MinnesotaCare) Child & Teen Check-ups (C&TC) is designed to help you put the pieces of your healthcare puzzle together. Child & Teen Checkups is how Minnesota refers to the comprehensive wellchild checks recommended by the Minnesota Department of
Health. Asking for C&TC by name is a way to ensure that your clinic allows ample time to include all of the components of these important, periodic check-ups including: Health history, growth measurements, developmental checks, physical exam, age-appropriate health and development information, immunizations, vision and hearing checks, and laboratory tests as needed. Recommendations for periodic dental checks are included, as well. C&TC: Think of it as your owner’s manual AND your maintenance guide. It’s there for your children from cradle to college to help you keep track of what they need and when they need it.

Head Start works together with families to build bright futures Semcac Head Start is a high quality preschool program serving six counties in Southeast Minnesota. We work as a fullservice support and development program offering services in four areas: Parent Involvement, Early Childhood Education, Health and Nutrition, and Community Services. Our staff is familyfocused. Parents and teachers work together to plan activities that support each child’s growth and well-being. Services are offered to meet the special needs of children with disabilities. Head Start works for the total child. Children participate in a variety of educational activities. The activities encourage a love
of learning and lifelong healthy habits. For example, they receive medical and dental care, have healthy meals and snacks, and enjoy creative play in safe settings indoors and outdoors. As a result, children get along with others, solve problems, and are more confident. The children also improve their listening and speaking skills. Head Start helps all children succeed. Children, and their families, leave Head Start more prepared for kindergarten, excited about learning and ready to succeed. Our school readiness goals are aligned with federal and state mandates. They are consistent with the State of Min-

nesota’s Goal to ensure that by 2020, all Minnesota children are school-ready as they enter kindergarten. 100% of children enrolled in 2011-12 progressed toward “full proficiency” across all domains of learning. Head Start provides responsive and flexible programming. We are excited to announce two changes to our programming starting in August 2013. The changes are in support of rural families and young parents. A new home-based option will reach families expecting a baby and/or with children birthfive years, for southern part of Fillmore and Houston counties. The option is weekly home visit by a trained educator and center socializations offered every 2 weeks. Our Ostrander site is moving to Leroy-Ostrander Public School. We will offer a 6 hour day, M-Th, in sync with the school’s schedule. Children could take part in the School’s before and after care. Our bus would run from Spring Valley to Leroy both ways. Investments in early education will place kids on path to success By Brenda Cassellius, Minnesota Commissioner of Education Much has been written about the long-term benefits of high quality early education and all day kindergarten, especially for poor children. Research abounds to support investments in young learners as a critical way to close achievement gaps and improve student outcomes. Governor Dayton’s budget contains significant new investments for both early childhood education and all day kindergarten, and every sign indicates that substantial investments for early learning will be coming out of the legislature as well. Minnesota is home to some of the most compelling research on the high return of investment for early learning – up to sixteen dollars for every one dollar invested according to former Federal Reserve Chair Art Rolnick. And there’s more: Child-development researchers at the University of North Carolina recently published a study that found low-income students who attended preschool had higher math and reading scores in third grade than their low-income peers who did not. City University of New York conducted a study showing that one in six students who can’t
read at grade level by third grade will not finish high school by age 19 – nearly four times the rate of their more proficient peers. A study begun in 1962 in Michigan tracked two groups of low-income students - those who attended preschool and those who did not - and found that at age 40, participants who attended preschool had attained higher levels of education, earned higher wages, were more likely to own a home and were less likely to have been incarcerated than those who did not attend preschool. Yet, despite the evidence, pockets of opposition continue to question the wisdom of early childhood education. To which I say this: if you want a real life success story that illustrates the potential for high quality early education to change a life, look at me. I was a Head Start baby. I can personally attest to the value of early learning, not only the early benefits to a poor girl growing up in the projects of south Minneapolis, but the long-term effects on my life. I could easily have ended up in a cycle of poverty and dependence, but I didn’t. Why? For many reasons, including hard work and a little bit of luck, but also because of the early
opportunities I received and the parenting support given to my mother, who had my sister at 16 and me at 20. Head Start allowed me to develop school readiness skills and a love of learning that have lasted a lifetime. I remember the fun of outlining my 4-year old body on a big sheet of paper and labeling my parts, of watching a celery stalk turn red in a glass full of tinted water, of reading my first book, Harold and the Purple Crayon, and imagining my own dreams for adventure as I drew them with a purple crayon. My best memory, though, is when my teacher would round us up in a circle at the end of the day to touch the tip of her “magic wand” to the top of our heads, and if we were good and had done all of our work, the magic star on the end would light up. Why do these experiences matter now, nearly four decades later? Because they taught me perhaps preschool’s biggest contribution to a students’ future success; the so-called “soft skills,” which help children learn how to pay attention and stay on task. My earliest teachers shaped me by instilling not only a love of learning, but also the principles of hard work, goodness and perseverance. These qualities

cannot be measured by a test, but they matter a great deal in a competitive and diverse global economy and are necessary for success in life. I’ve been lucky. Lucky to be born in the right decade and that my mother had access to resources and support. Lucky to have had great teachers who pushed me to be my best. Lucky that wise Minnesotans who came before me realized that a good education for every child was the surest way to strengthen our state’s competitive edge, leading a generation’s War on Poverty and crafting a Minnesota Miracle along the way. But should it come down to luck? The Governor and I
believe not. We believe all children deserve access to the same great start I had. Investing now, this year, in our youngest learners - with more scholarships for high quality early education programming and increased access to all-day kindergarten – gives us the best chance to fully leverage the potential that lies within every child. We may never be able to fully measure the profound impact early learning has on life success. Or maybe we can. Maybe we’re just waiting for a future education commissioner – a little girl or boy learning and dreaming in a sun-filled classroom today - to show us just how it’s done.

Chatfield Community Education supports and serves families Chatfield Community Education recognizes the importance of early childhood experiences. Therefore, it is a priority to support and serve families with young children. Programs and services have been designed with the young child in mind. ECFE The Early Childhood Family Education program provides classes and special events for parents and children to attend together. The Building Blocks classes are available on Monday mornings and Thursday evenings. Families choose to participate for a variety of reasons. Some like the uninterrupted parent-child time—others the experience of the teacher-led
circle time with music and stories – and other parents enjoy the parent discussion which gives them the chance to discover strategies and tips to assist in the adventures of parenting. Information on the Fall session of Building Blocks will be available in August. Check out the Gopher Gazette, the school website, and the August Community Education ad. SUMMER ECFE provides playground & story time for families with toddlers & preschoolers. The cost is $5 per child, for the entire summer. Snacks are provided. Join us at the elementary school pre-K playground on Tuesday mornings, beginning June 11th. To

Classes are offered for two age groups (3-year-olds and 4 & 5-year-olds). Through teacher-directed activities, theme-based centers, and small group activities, children develop pre-literacy skills as well as the social skills necessary to function in a classroom setting. Rhyming, alliteration, letter knowledge, vocabulary, and conversation form the foundation for the preschool curriculum. Curriculum is enhanced by the inclusion of Action 100, which is a literacy program for Pre-K through 6 grade. All the preschool classes are held in the Early Childhood/ Kindergarten wing of the elementary building. Children in the older classes may ride the school bus to or from school, with a bus buddy. Scholarships are available, based on financial need. For the full day option, children must bring a lunch, and eat on site. Early childhood programs in Lanesboro strive to emphasize early learning The early childhood programs at Lanesboro strive to meet the goals of emphasizing the importance of early learning and early literacy. We welcome you to learn more about our programs and would love you to join us! Early Childhood Family Education Parents are a child’s first and most significant teachers. ECFE offers a variety of classes and resources for parents and children, birth through kindergar-
ten age. If you are unfamiliar with how ECFE classes operate, class time is divided into three sections: parent-child activity time - where families explore a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate play and learning activities planned by a teacher; parent discussion time where parents meet with a parent educator to share support, experiences and information about child development and parenting techniques; and
children’s activity time where children learn with the teacher and paraprofessional and practice social skills as they interact with each other. All children and families are welcome and encouraged to attend ECFE classes! ECFE also coordinates community wide events for seasonal holidays such as Halloween, Christmas and Easter. Preschool Lanesboro Public Schools offers two different preschool classes: a three/four year old class and a four/five year old class. The focus of our preschool program centers on the five milestones in development: receptive and expressive language, gross and fine motor skills, social and emotional development, self help, and cognitive development. The three/four year old class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays for three hours each day. Morning and afternoon classes are offered with transportation to and from preschool available. The four/five year old classes meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for three hours each day. Morning and afternoon classes are available with transportation to and from preschool available.
Lanesboro Child Care Center (LCCC) At LCCC, we believe that children need a warm, safe, colorful environment and varied experiences that place the emphasis on ‘play.’ By providing these things, we feel that your child will grow and develop at a pace that is just right for them. We feel that the role of the teacher is to assist the learning process by providing an environment where each child has an opportunity to explore and develop various skills. Our professional staff is responsible for planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate curriculum for each age level. Day care in the Lanesboro Public School system allows children to be comfortable in a school setting. It also is comforting to parents to know that after school their children can go to a safe, enjoyable setting. With the in-house day care, Lanesboro Public School is promoting the value of family first, developing children who are school ready, and offering convenient facilities for its patrons.
