Harmony Enterprises, Inc. celebrating 50 years By Jade Sexton jsexton@fillmorecountyjournal.com
For the past 50 years, the small town of Harmony has been home to a large worldwide business, and many people aren’t even aware of what goes on there. Harmony Enterprises, Inc., known to the local residents as HECO, offers more to the world than can be seen when driving by the building. The company was started in 1962 by a group of men that wanted to diversify the economy. Merlin Hoiness designed an ice fishing shelter, and soon they needed a building for manufacturing. The first location of Harmony Enterprises
was where the American Legion Club is now. Al Cremer was one of the first people to work at Harmony Enterprises. His son Don started in 1968, and his grandsons, Steve and Chris both work there now. Steve Cremer is the President, and Chris Cremer the Vice President of Operations. “We’re just a small little business in Harmony, but we do business in 70 countries,” said Steve. The number of products created at Harmony Enterprises increased over the years to include things like tent campers and roof lift systems. In 1995 they stopped sewing canvas and
sold that part of the business to High Pointe Coverings. Right now, the business they do is mostly related to waste solutions, balers and compactors. There is also an office in Toulouse, France, called Harmony Europe, which opened in April of 2011. “It allows us to take care of our European customers on European time,” said Steve, noting the time difference between Minnesota and countries in Europe. Garbage compactors of all sizes are manufactured right in Harmony and shipped all over the world to businesses that can See ANNIVERSARY Page 19

Preston resting spot is number one for Chimney Swifts By K aren R eisner kreisner@fillmorecountyjournal.com
The number one chimney swift site in the state of Minnesota as determined by the Audubon Minnesota Swift Counts in 2011 is the former Preston Elementary School chimney, which is now Trailhead Inn and Suites. Population counts had been conducted at over 200 sites within the state in 2011. Last August 30 around sunset, 1100 chimney swifts were counted circling over the 65-foot tall historic chimney before funneling down for a good night’s rest. The chimney is nearing 100 years old and has likely been a destination for the swifts since its construction. Swifts gather for communal roosts in large chimneys. Greg Munson, former director of the Quarry Hill Nature Center, became aware this last spring of some damage to the
old chimney, probably from a lightening strike. He initiated the effort to repair the historic chimney. The chimney has not functioned for the purpose for which it was designed, for the building’s furnace, for many years. Munson contacted owner Steve Corson and was given permission to repair and stabilize the chimney. The Minnesota DNR Non-Game Wildlife Division provided $4,500 for the repair of the chimney which has been completed. At a May 2011 Preston City Council meeting, Munson presented plans for a tower/kiosk to be located in front of the Trailhead Inn near the bathrooms. The tower could provide a nesting site for a pair of chimney swifts. The kiosk would have educational materials on each of the four sides about swifts and possibly about cliff swallows and turkey vultures, which are also prevalent in the area. The tower
is planned to be 16 feet tall with a 4-foot by 4-foot base to be made of concrete block. The DNR has expressed an interest concerning the installation of a camera, similar to the “eagle cam.” Funding for building the tower/kiosk has been obtained ($300 from Zumbro Valley Audubon Society of the greater Rochester area, $300 from Minnesota Audubon, $2,000 from the Corson family, and $1,000 from the Preston Foundation. City Administrator Joe Hoffman confirmed that the city has approved the building of the tower/kiosk on city property contingent on an agreement between the parties involved. At the city council’s July 16 meeting Hoffman reported that the city attorney had drafted an agreement as directed in May. However, Zumbro Valley Audu-

Tippy is currently about 16 pounds but is quite skinny from her previous case of neglect but she LOVES her food so she will be putting some weight on in no time! Tippy came from a hoarding case from out of state, she is slowly getting used to a life in doors, as part of the family. She is very shy and timid at this point but her foster family is working with her and with some time and patience she will make a great companion. She likes to have her own space with a nice bed or blanket where she can cuddle up, especially when she is frightened. Who can solve our problems? By Jason Sethre Publisher of the Fillmore County Journal & Olmsted County Journal Cell phone: 507-251-5297
jsethre@fillmorecountyjournal.com
In last week’s commentary, I posed a rhetorical question: But, really, can a president solve our problems? Of course, the answer is no. Yes, on some levels of executive power, a president can influence the Jason Sethre general direction of a conversation about a particular issue. But, keep in mind we have three branches to our government, maintaining checks and balances. So, who can solve our problems? There’s only one person who can come to the rescue on this one. Us. We have the greatest influence on our personal destiny. We make decisions every day that affect our lives more than anybody else in our lives. So, when I hear the continuous rants of those who feel like they have become victims or casualties of the economy, I grow more concerned about how we are going to get ourselves out of this messy economy. The economy tanking back in 2008 was the result of many things of which we cannot control. However, our response to those events and the decisions we make based on what we learned from those events could help us define a brighter future. Back in 2008, many people lost their jobs and those losses put the housing market on fragile terms. I know. I was there. Editorial Cartoon
I, too, was laid off in October 2008, among another 13 percent of my coworkers. At that time, while I didn’t realize it, nearly 30,000 jobs had been eliminated across the nation in 2008 in the newspaper industry. It was a sign of things to come, but I wasn’t really acknowledging this unemployment Tsunami, yet. It wasn’t until it affected me. Fortunately, everything worked out for me and my family. We sold our house in less than 45 days back in Wisconsin, and immediately moved back home to this area to purchase the Fillmore County Journal. The rest is history, and I’m glad that economic downturn forced me to make a decision I should have probably made a long time ago. So, why am I concerned about people ranting about how the economy has gravely impacted their lives? Well, it appears to me that we are not going to completely crawl out of this depression (and yes, I said depression, not recession), until we learn a few things. Losing my job back in October 2008 was like going through the grieving process. I had put in 14 great years in the newspaper industry, continually getting promoted and helping my company grow revenues and profits. So, when the rug was pulled out from underneath me, it felt like it was undeserved. But it wasn’t a personal attack on me, even though it felt like it. It was a business decision, and downsizing was the most popular word in our vocabulary in 2008. Just like when we lose someone, I believe job loss follows the same path of emotions with the five stages including denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. What stage are we at as a
nation and personally? Well, of course, it will be different for every person. As a nation, when I see the Occupy movement persist in various forms, I question the value we place on privilege versus entitlement. Apparently, we don’t want to work for anything anymore. Nearly every day, I receive a press release from Occupy Homes MN out of the Twin Cities talking about how they are battling another bank from allowing a foreclosure to take place on another family or individual. OK, so if one person is entitled to remain in their home without satisfying a contractual obligation to repay a debt service, there should be no consequences? Well, if you felt the collapse of the banking system was bad in 2008, just wait until you tell anyone who doesn’t pay their monthly mortgage that they are entitled to become squatters. Yes, our politicians and bankers have made horrible decisions, but this didn’t happen without our consent. Nobody put a gun to our heads and made us over-extend ourselves. We took chances, individually and as a nation. I remember when I bought my first home at the age of 21. At that time, I hadn’t considered buying a home until my older and wiser coworkers told me that if they were my age again they would buy a house instead of paying rent. So, I took their advice and made my first leap into home ownership. At that time, the mortgage loan officers indicated the benchmark for determining how much house a person could afford was based on 28 percent of that person’s gross monthly income. So, including all monthly payments (like auto loans and home loans), my monthly bills could not exceed 28 percent of my gross monthly income. Really? Who pays their
monthly bills with gross income? Shouldn’t that be based on net income -- the money you actually have left over at the end of the day? And, for each of the four homes we purchased from 1995 to 2002, the 28 percent rule was in place. In 2007, when my wife and I moved from Indiana to Wisconsin for a promotional job opportunity, the 28 percent rule apparently went out the window. At that time, that 28 percent rule had jumped up to a 56 percent rule. So, now the bank was offering us much more money to drop on a house. But, why would I want to buy such an expensive house and potentially struggle to make ends meet each month? We chose to stick with the 28 percent rule. Each of us make decisions that impact our lives more than any banker or politician. But, it seems as though we are quick to blame others for our own challenges instead of picking ourselves up by our bootstraps to make forward progress. When we can stop blaming others for our challenges and begin to focus on what we need to do to change our direction -then we will be able to make this economy better. Don’t leave it up to the politicians. We need to act with a sense of ownership with every decision we make every day. There are lots of jobs in the employment section of our newspaper, yet how many people are applying for jobs? Extended unemployment is making it easy for complacency to keep our work ethic on the couch. As I stated earlier, we are battling the values of privilege versus entitlement. Have we learned nothing from those who traversed the Great Depression?

Letter about OHV trail To the Editor, The city of Houston is sponsoring an OHV Trail in partnership with the DNR and four out of town recreational clubs. The four clubs received DNR Grant-in-Aid funding in July, 2010 ; $150,000 matched by the DNR for a total of $300,000. Letter about the Fillmore County Fair To the Editor, Last Friday night, my family had the pleasure of going to the Fillmore County Fair in Preston. We had planned to meet my son and his family for supper and arm band night for my grandsons. We were delighted to find that the midway was clean, safe, and run by people who liked their job!! My grandson (age 4) had a FABULOUS time riding each ride and was delighted to know that he could ride as often as he wished to. As he left one ride, he told the attendant “I’ll be back!” As he approached that same ride later, the man said, “Hey, Buddy, I’ve been waiting for you!!” Needless to say, my grandson had a wonderfully memorable night, much of which was due to the kindness of the midway staff. Several of the ride staff noticed my other grandson (age 2) with his mother, and asked if he would like a ride, too. They were very encouraging and were very careful for his safety. He rode several times, but was mostly content to watch his brother and cheer. As we meandered through the games and food stands, we were pleased to find that the people supervising the rides were not the only great people on the midway staff. We visited with game and concession staff who were interested in people- not just in making money. We would love to see this midway group return in the future! I know that the midway is but a small part of the fair. Many people spend countless hours making certain that things go smoothly from the grandstand to the 4H projects to the food stands and everything in between. I would like to say a big HATS OFF! Especially to the fair board, as well as to each person who had a part in making this year’s fair such a success! Joanie Johnson Harmony, MN within the state, so long as there is a feasible and prudent alternative consistent with the reasonable requirements of the public health, safety, and welfare and the state’s paramount concern for the protection of its air, water, land and other natural resources from pollution, impairment, or destruction. Economic considerations alone shall not justify such conduct. The OHV Trail has yet to be approved, yet $210,000 of GIA money has been spent acquiring property, with another purchase of residential property in process. Park design, maintenance and management plans have yet to be developed. Planning after making a commitment reminds me of Nancy Pelosi pitching National Healthcare by stating that, “We have to pass the bill before you can find out what is in it.” Incredible! City residents should know the full cost and details of the proposal BEFORE purchasing the land for it--that is simply prudent. Lisa Erickson Houston, MN

The Fillmore County Salvation Army, in collaboration with local law enforcement, is sponsoring the first ever, “Shop with a Cop” event in Fillmore County Saturday, August 4. “Shop with a Cop” has been successful and eagerly anticipated program in a growing number of Minnesota communities. The Fillmore County Salvation Army is focusing this event around the back to school needs of children entering 3rd grade. The monies allocated are funds raised in Fillmore County and applications were provided to families living in Fillmore County. Children and their “Cop” mentors will meet at the B&B Olympic Bowl in Preston. After being introduced, the children will be escorted to Alco in Spring Valley to shop for school supplies, clothing, and shoes. Pizza and bowling after will give the kids an opportunity to get to know Fillmore County’s real life heroes. This is an important and groundbreaking event. Our goal is to create positive relationships between our peacekeepers in uniform and the young lives they may touch. Our mission is to offer “Shop with a Cop” every school year. Officers and kids will meet at 10am at B&B Olympic Bowl for sign-in. They will shop at Alco in Spring Valley from 10:45am until 12:15pm. They will return for pizza and bowling from 12:30pm until 1:30pm. Parent pick up is from 1:15pm until 1:30pm.

re monotes from a country kitchen by Vicki Christianson
I’m sorry to report that I did not get a chance to write an article for this edition of the Journal. I spent the last two months doctoring with my husband in Rochester. I have jotted down some of life’s lessons that have been passed down to me and that I feel are very true. Hope you can apply them to your life as well. 1. Life isn’t always fair, but it is still good.
2. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 3. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick - but your friends and family will. Stay in touch! 4. When it comes to chocolate - don’t even try to resist! 5. Make peace with your past so it doesn’t screw up the
Betty Wiltgen’s simple refrigerator pickles.
Got this recipe from her about 26 years ago when she was still working at the bank. I make these many times during the summer. Peel several cucumbers and slice. Put into a large bowl. Add as many sliced onions as you want. Soak this in a mixture of salt and a little water. After about an hour, drain. Boil together 1 cup sugar and 2/3 cup white vinegar. Pour over the cucumber/onions and chill. The syrup will cover lots of cucumbers as they tend to shrivel up a little bit. Can eat as soon as they are cooled! Sometimes I do not peel the cucumbers as I like the eating all the cucumber.

present. 6. Don’t compare your life to others - you have no idea what their journey is all about. 7. If a relationship has to be a secret - you shouldn’t be in it. 8. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful. 9. Whatever doesn’t kill you really will make you stronger. 10. Burn those nice candles, use the good sheets, and wear your fancy lingerie! Don’t save it for a special day - today is special! 11. No one is in charge of your happiness but you! 12. For every disaster or problem that creeps into your life, remember these words - “Will this matter in five years?” 13. Forgive everyone for everything. 14. Time heals almost everything, so give time some time. 15. However good or bad the situation is, it will change. 16. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or did not do. 17. Growing old beats the alternative - dying young. 18. Your children only get one childhood - enjoy it! 19. Life isn’t tied with a bow but it’s still a gift. 20. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d probably grab ours back! 21. Frustration is trying to find your glasses without your glasses.

22. Good friends are like stars, you don’t always see them but you always know they are there. Recipe for cooler corn: the following simple trick cooks a couple of dozen cobs at one time by using your beverage cooler! Wash out your insulated cooler. Shuck several ears of corn and place in the clean cooler. Pour an ice cream pail of boiling water over the corn and close the insulated lid. Let sit for about 30 minutes. Drain the cooler and keep the lid closed. The corn will stay warm with a just-right texture for about two hours. Great for camping or an outside picnic!

In the July 30 issue of the Fillmore County Journal, the College News incorrectly stated that Ashley Christianson was on the Dean’s List for Bemidji State University. It should have read Ashley Christian of Spring Valley, Minnesota.

By Shannon Love On July 15-19, several FCLMC Wolves got the experience of a lifetime. Several wrestlers on the team attended Nebraska Wrestling Camp in Lincoln to work on and learn new wrestling techniques. At the end of their time there, they got an opportunity to meet Jordan Burroughs, the 2012 World Champion at 74kg in Men’s Freestyle Wrestling. Burroughs is the Gold Medal favorite at the Olympic Games in London on August 10. Burroughs is a two-time National Champion and three-time AllAmerican at the University of Nebraska. The FCLMC wrestlers had a great time at camp and learned many new skills they will be able to demonstrate next season on the mat. They plan to attend the camp again next summer. Pictured with Jordan Burroughs are: Back Row: Trevor Barnes, Alex Fishbaugher, Sam Bahl, Niko Anderson, Monty Holm. Front Row: Chris Collett, Andy Love, Burroughs, Connor Hanson, Tom Henry.

We are still getting patents. Over 50 years we have kept that innovation.” In 2008, Governor Pawlenty awarded Harmony Enterprises with the International Trade Award for the State of Minnesota. Chris started working there out of high school, and spent the first 15 years learning the manufacturing aspect of the business. “It really helped me a lot to understand the operations,” he shared. The plan for the future is to last at least another 50 years, continue designing and producing great products, and expand the business in Europe. An Open House to celebrate 50 years in business in Harmony is taking place on August 29, 2012, from 3-6pm with plant tours and a picnic-style lunch.
Lidtke Mill in Lime Springs a historical treasure By Jade Sexton Lime Springs is a small town in Iowa, right near the Minnesota border that is home to something big. The Lidtke Mill has been there since 1857. At one time, there were 13 mills along the Upper Iowa River, and the Lidtke Mill is the last one standing. According to Jerry White, member of the Lidtke Mill board, the mill and the miller’s house next to it were restored in 1974. In 1976, they were put on the registry of National Historic Sites. The home next to the mill, where the miller would live with his family, has been restored to what it would have looked like with a family living in it in the late 1800s, complete with wood stove, furniture, clothing, kitchen stove and cooking utensils, photographs, and chamber pots in the bedrooms. Phyl Stevenson is one of the volunteers that give tours of the home, and describes what life was like for the people who lived there. There is also a gift shop for visitors who wish to take home a souvenir. Melvin Monroe Marsh first built the mill in 1857. Various other people owned and ran the mill during the years that it was running. D.W. Davis bought the mill in 1915. Herman Lidtke married Davis’s daughter, and took over ownership until 1960, when he closed up the business. When he did that, he merely locked the doors, leaving everything behind. He left tools, machines, and even paperwork

Bratland Family recognized as a 2012 “U of M Farm Family” for Houston County Jerrold Tesmer Extension Educator Fillmore/Houston Counties Gerald and Judy Bratland (Viking Valley Farm) of Spring Grove has been named Houston County’s “2012 Farm Family of the Year” by the University of Minnesota. Viking Valley Farm is three generations of Bratlands owning and operating the farm, which started in 1945 by Kenneth and Gladys. Gerald became a partner in 1960, joined by Judy in Jerrold Tesmer 1962. Their sons Duron and Darin became partners in the ‘80s along with their wives and families. The farm started with 200 acres of land raising corn, oats and hay, 20 dairy cows, 350 head of slaughter hogs and 500 laying hens. In 1951 a registered Brown Swiss heifer was purchased for a 4-H dairy project. In 1954 and 1956 Gerald purchased registered Hampshire and Suffolk sheep. The swine operation turned to registered Hampshire pigs in 1960 selling breeding stock. The sheep and swine operations continued for 30 years and were discontinued in the ‘80s to concentrate on registered Brown Swiss dairy cattle and crop production. In the 1970s and ‘80s, the dairy herd was shown at the State Fair and was Premier Breeder and Exhibitor for ten consecutive years. The herd was also shown at National Shows. Over 130 excellent cows have been developed. The herd has received first place National
recognition for production in herds of the same size and All American recognition on seventeen dairy animals. Today 4-H and FFA cattle are shown by the fourth generation. The current farm operation consists of 710 acres owned and 250 acres rented; 750 acres of corn, beans and hay are grown. Crops are mainly no till terrace and strip cropping rotation. Over 200 Brown Swiss are maintained with 100 milk cows. The financial and management of the farm is now done by Duron and Darin and families. Duron is in charge of the dairy operation and Darin is the agronomy manager. Duron and wife Missy have three daughters; Kaitlin, Claire and Kelsey. Missy is a teacher in the Spring Grove Public School. Darin and Sara have three children; Lindsey, Samantha and Carter. Darin’s wife Sara is a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse. Gerald is active in the daily operations. The grandchildren help in the dairy barn and enjoy showing dairy at the county fair. Gerald has served on local coop boards, been president of their church congregation, and served as president and secretary for the Minnesota Brown Swiss Association, president and director on the National Brown Swiss Association, and president for National Purebred Dairy Cattle Association. Gerald was on the Swiss Valley Farms Company board for 27 years and served as secretary and president for 14 years. This also gave him the opportunity to be a director on the National Milk Producers Association and director on World Dairy Expo for 19 years. He served on the Houston County Fair Board for
20 years, also as President; and showed livestock at the county fair since 1951. Throughout the years, Gerald has served as dairy judge at many county, regional, national and state dairy shows. In 2003, he had the honor of being inducted into the Minnesota Livestock Hall of Fame. Judy has been involved with the Houston County American Cancer Society board and Relay for Life for over 18 years. She has served as president in their local church women’s group several times and also on conference boards, been a Garden Club member for over 45 years and a volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile for many years. Duron and Darin’s families have had adult leadership roles in 4-H. The grandchildren have been involved in sports and theater productions. Gerald has been in the unique position of viewing the dairy industry from both sides. He has been involved in the production side of breeding and raising cattle, as well as being a part of the marketing industry. The most fulfilling aspect for Gerald has been the opportunity to work in partnership with his family to produce quality cattle. Without his family, these opportunities would not have been possible. The Bratland family is one of the many farm families from around the state, one from each participating county, being honored by the University this year. The families will be officially recognized in a ceremony Thursday, August 9 at the annual Farmfest near Redwood Falls, MN. Profiles of the 2012 honorees and information on the recognition event can be found on the U’s farm family website, http://mnfarmfamilies.cfans.umn.edu. Families receiving honors were selected by their local county Extension committees and have demonstrated a commitment to enhancing and supporting agriculture and agriculture production. “The 2012 Farm Families were chosen based on their contributions to agriculture and their communities,” said Bev Durgan,

Tracing Abe Lincoln’s Springfield, IL, footsteps, Part 2 By Gerri Nielsen This story is the second in a five-part series about Gerri Nielsen’s trip to Springfield, Illinois. TUESDAY: We walked the couple blocks from the downtown Hilton to Lincoln’s home, a National Park Site. We passed the First Presbyterian Church that houses Lincoln’s pew along with other historical documents. The current church building was built in 1868, three years after Lincoln’s death. The Lincolns attended the second of three church buildings of this congregation; that structure was sold in 1871. Like other parishioners of the time, Abe paid $50 upfront and then paid a yearly rent to retain the family pew. The pew was number 20 on the left side, seventh row from the front. Even though Lincoln himself was never a member of the church, Mary became one on April 13, 1852, after the death of their son Eddie in 1850 (his funeral was held in their home). Their son Tad was baptized in the second church building, and his funeral was held there on July 17, 1871. The third and current building of the congregation was the site of Mary’s funeral on July 16, 1882. It seemed a bit ironic since Mary swore she could never return to Springfield after Abe’s death--it just held too many memories for her that would bring her into a deep melancholy. We found the pew in the entryway of the church with a silver nameplate on the arm. A church member had purchased the pew from the old sanctuary and donated it to the current building in 1912. On Easter Sunday in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt sat in it
at worship services. Church members proudly showed us the million-dollar organ in the balcony, and the gorgeous Tiffany windows which are slated to be dismantled and sent to St. Louis for cleaning and restoration this month. When we arrived at Lincoln’s home, Tim Townsend, a Lincoln Home Historian, gave us an orientation. Then Park Rangers toured us through. The home is quite different than its original state when Lincoln purchased it as a 1 1/2 story cottage for $1,200. It is now a two-story, large home. Mary, who was born into Kentucky aristocracy, had never done any household tasks herself. Now, marrying below her station, she had to learn to to cook, clean, and take care of Abe and their four sons: Robert, Eddie, Willie, and Tad. Mary had begged all the years they lived here for a cook stove so she wouldn’t have to cook over the hearth fire. She finally got her stove just before they left Springfield for Washington. When you walk up the stairway, your hand is grasping the same railing Lincoln’s did. Many of the furnishings are original, including Mary’s dresser, Lincoln’s desk, and a stereo-optic toy the boys played with in the living room. The neighbors all complained about the younger boys, the terrors of town. Since Abe and Mary had unhappy childhoods, they swore their boys would be able to live carefree and undisciplined--the boys would be happy and have limitless freedom. This included letting them throw toys from the balcony. A decoration on the wrought-iron railing on the balcony remains broken today from the boys’

roughhousing. But the Lincolns’ time here was happy and historic. Several important guests were entertained in this home, and Abe and Mary’s intent was to return here and continue living a happy midwestern life. Next was a tour of the old state capitol building. The building is the fifth statehouse in Illinois, and it was in service from 1839 to 1876. A young intern named Mike dressed as a Union soldier was our guide. The capitol is decked out as it was when Lincoln served as a busy lawyer in Springfield. We saw the secretary of state’s office, the Supreme Court (where Lincoln pleaded over 250 cases!), several more offices, and on the second floor, the Senate and the House Chambers. We even sat at the legislators’ desks and imagined what it would be like to use those quills to write resolutions. Across the street we toured the Lincoln-Herndon law office. On the morning before he boarded the train leaving Springfield bound for Washington as President-elect, Lincoln told his partner to leave the shingle up on the shop--he planned to come back after his terms in office and continue on lawyering. “We’ll just go on as before--this thing won’t change anything,” he said. Our guide, a volunteer named Molly, gave us all the history inside the building, including all the changes over the years. Dressed in period costume, she gave us some secrets about how women dealt with seven layers of underclothes like pantaloons and corsets. When she spoke, she had to tae slow, deep breaths every minute or so to work around the confines of the corset. Molly also showed us the post office located in the back and described the intricacies in sending letters in the mid-1800s. Mailing a letter was very expensive--for the receivers. Before the time of postage stamps, a list of names of people who had letters waiting for them at the post office was published in the newspaper. Receivers would come to the post office, take a look at the letter, and decide if they wanted to pay for the letter or not. If they refused, the letter would be sent to Washington, D.C., to the dead letter office and would be destroyed. The cost of the letter depended on the number of sheets and the number of miles the letter traveled. Generally, a one-sheet letter traveling 30 miles would cost six cents. Traveling 150 miles, it would cost 18 3/4 cents. Traveling over 400 miles, it would cost 25 cents--a fortune for someone earning 40 cents a day. The cost of a 2-sheet letter would double. For that reason, the writers would write as small as possible; sometimes they would write filling up one sheet, and then they would turn the sheet 1/4 turn and continue writing in a crossword puzzle style; reading it is tricky! They would fold the sheet and write the address on a blank space, because using an envelope would cost more.

Senders and receivers used codes so they could save their money; if someone moved to a new location, the receiver of the letter would know his/ her loved ones had arrived safely in their new location just by seeing that they had written. If a baby was born, writers would write the name of the baby in the addressee’s name. They’d jot down certain letters or doodles to declare if it was a girl or boy. After tromping around town, we boarded a trolley which took us to see Lincoln’s tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Mark Johnson, Historian of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, explained its history. There was a lot of discrepancy over where Lincoln’s final resting place would be. After his assassination, he was immediately regarded a hero, and several people felt his burial place should be in Washington, D.C. He was certainly a man of the people, and his family’s wishes were almost ignored. Finally, after some telegraphing and finagling, Lincoln’s only living son, Robert, insisted that Lincoln’s burial happen in Springfield, the town he loved dearly. Today, visitors can see the receiving tomb, where Lincoln’s body was at first kept while the monument was being built. A temporary vault is now gone, with just a granite marker on the site. In 1874, a 117-foot Quincy granite monument was erected. A giant obelisk towers over a bronze statue of Lincoln holding the Emancipation Proclamation in one hand, and four bronze sculptures representing the four Civil War military services: infantry, artillery, cavalry, and navy. Lincoln’s body was placed in a marble sarcophagus in
the burial room. The front of the tomb contained artifacts and documents visitors could peruse museum-style. There was a lot of controversy when Chicago tomb raiders tried to steal Lincoln’s body in 1876 to collect a ransom of $200,000. Their scheme was foiled when an informant told police, who showed up before the robbers on the appointed night. The tomb now encases Lincoln’s body under ten feet of concrete with the slogan: “Now he belongs to the ages” decorated in gold letters. Also buried in crypts here are Mary, and their sons Willie, Tad, and Eddie. Oldest son Robert, who served as Captain for U.S. Grant in the Civil War and secretary of war under President Garfield, lies at rest in Arlington Cemetery in Washington, D.C. A castle-like building was constructed for the “keepers” of the tomb, and as of 1960, the Tomb has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Our group was lucky to see the 114th Infantry Regiment Illinois Volunteers dressed in their Union blues march in and lower the flag flying at the tomb in a ceremonial flag retreat ceremony that evening. One lucky winner took home the flag that had been flying in front of Lincoln’s tomb the previous week. We were happy to see a boy scout from northern Illinois take home the prize. Every year, hundreds of boy scouts from around the country venture to Springfield to take the 20-mile Lincoln Heritage Trail hike from New Salem to Springfield, earning them a badge. Read the third installment of the series in next week’s Fillmore County Journal!

You must give or mail to the person who signed this Summons a written response called an Answer within 20 days of the date on which you received this Summons. You must send a copy of your Answer to the person who signed this Summons located at the following address: Matthew J. Opat, P.A. Attorney at Law PO Box 455 22 SE Second Street Chatfield, MN 55923 3. YOU MUST RESPOND TO EACH
CLAIM. The Answer is your written response to the Plaintiffs’ Complaint. In your Answer you must state whether you agree or disagree with each paragraph of the Complaint. If you believe the Plaintiffs should not be given everything asked for in the Complaint, you must say so in your Answer. 4. YOU WILL LOSE YOUR CASE IF YOU DO NOT SEND A WRITTEN RESPONSE TO THE COMPLAINT TO THE PERSON WHO SIGNED THIS SUMMONS. If you do not answer within 20 days, you will lose this case. You will not get to tell your side of the story, and the Court may decide against you and award the Plaintiffs everything asked for in the Complaint.
