Dave Haugen’s ‘69 Camaro Z28 is well maintained and protected from the elements to keep it in great condition. Photo by Barb Jeffers By Barb Jeffers “I found this in a shed, way back in the corner,” says Dave Haugen of Lanesboro, Minn., about the 1969 Camaro Z28 he bought a few years ago. “I was pretty lucky to find this one.” Having favored Camaros and Chevelles over the years, Haugen has owned a couple other older Camaros, and had restored a 1968 Chevelle. “I was looking for another car to restore and I stumbled across this one. This has always been my dream car,” he said. He bought the ‘69 Camaro and sold the Chevelle to focus his time on the Camaro. His camaro has the X33 code;
Haugen explains that the Z28s came in two models — the X33 code which is more of a deluxe model with nicer interior, more chrome and other extras, while the Z77 package was a more bare bones model. As Z28s were designed for racing, they had to be under 305 cubic inches, which is where the 302 came in to play. “In order to race officially they had to be under 305 cubic inches according to the race rules, and then they had to be a production car and an “x” amount had to be sold to the public in order to officially race,” explains Haugen. This Camaro is a 1178 crank and has the original snowflake

intake. The car was originally licensed in 1969 in Georgia and spent most of its years in Florida and Georgia. A previous owner must have raced the car, as Haugen found plaques and trophies in the vehicle after he purchased it. When buying a Camaro Z28 back in the ‘60s, a person had to get a manual transmission and it had to be a four speed. Air conditioning was not an option at the time. Power steering was an option, however, and Haugen’s Camaro does have power steering. Haugen has gone through the motor and the transmission of the car to make sure everything is in good working order. The rear seats in the Camaro are original with houndstooth and leather while the front seats, which had more wear, have been redone. The car was painted back in the ‘90s and although the paint job is not perfect, it was wet sanded after Haugen purchased it and the paint looks very nice. “I can do everything except paint,” notes Haugen, as he received his auto mechanic’s degree from Rochester Community & Technical College in Rochester, Minn., in the late ‘90s, so when he is looking at cars he is always looking for one with a decent body. Haugen’s Camaro Z28 has 73,000 miles on it and he does not add a lot of miles per year, as he says they use it to go cruising on Sunday afternoons and special occasions, but his family doesn’t take it on long trips. Haugen and his family have attended a couple car shows with the ‘69 Camaro and he says, “It’s fun to go to cruise-in’s and things like that” every now and then.

Mary Bell and Joe Deden next to their Model 3 Tesla. By Mary Bell and Joe Deden On March 31, 2016, my husband and I stood in freezing weather at the Tesla Minnesota service center to put our order in for a Model 3. We were 30th in line and we received the first long-range, dual motor, enhanced autopilot, Model 3 delivered in Minnesota, on August 10, 2018. A Tesla is an American made, all electric vehicle manufactured in
Fremont, Calif. It is not a hybrid with a combined gas engine; Teslas are powered solely by electricity. The Tesla model 3 has a rated range of 310 miles, and 90% of charging for most vehicles is done at home, at night, using off-peak rates. Enhanced autopilot is a game changer and makes the car fun to drive. The continual overthe-air free updates keep the car operating on the cutting edge.

Photo submitted Batteries are stored in the floor, making it one of the safest cars on the road. The most common question we receive is about the car’s range and how we handle range anxiety due to cold weather. Every February we take a month long road trip. This year we ventured out with our Model 3 Tesla. We drove 4,600 miles; from Minnesota to Texas, west into New Mexico, then back home on Interstate 70 and then I35 home. It was four degrees Fahrenheit when we left and zero degrees Fahrenheit when we returned. Our “rated” miles was 6,360 with our average efficiency at 72.3%, and over the whole trip the average energy usage was 310 wh/mi. During our trip our highest energy usage was 416 wh/mi, where we fought strong headwinds and the temperature was six degrees Fahrenheit. Most miles were driven on enhanced auto pilot, except for 40 miles of snow and ice on local roads. We used “A Better Route Planner” and loaded it into the car’s computer to display on the screen. We personalized the planning data based upon our current situation (average wh/mi, temperature, wind, road conditions). We set our lower battery arrival level at 20% to cover for unknown elevation changes and weather conditions (temperature, precipitation and wind). Using their recommendations, we selected Tesla Superchargers or destination chargers from the Tesla listings. We found that Superchargers are often near a truck stop, eating establishments or lodging facilities. Plugshare shows more destination chargers than the internal Tesla listings. extra charge for the destination chargers and left our car plugged in all night! We left our phone number at the front desk in case some other Tesla vehicle needed space to charge. In Las Cruces, N. Mex., at their community center there was a free level 2 Tesla wall charger. Our average trip segment was between 100 and 150 miles (twothree hours) that enabled us to keep charging in the sweet spot between 20-80%. We took bathroom breaks, got coffee and did a little walking, had a meal and sometimes played cribbage. Tesla automatically notified us when our battery reached 80%. Over the course of our 28-day, 4,600 mile trip we supercharged 38 times. Our average supercharging time was 31 minutes. We recharged the battery at the end of each day when the battery was still warm verses charging in the morning when a cold battery would take longer to charge. When possible, we plugged our car into a 110 outlet to keep the battery warm and pick up a couple extra miles. We did not witness internal combustion engine vehicles inten-
tionally blocking Tesla superchargers. Some superchargers were located close to the main entrance and others were at the furthest end of the parking lots. In Rockport, Tex., the LaQuinta Inn put orange cones to save the charging spot for Tesla vehicles. One of our most memorable experiences was while we were Supercharging at the Flying J Truck Stop in Texas. A father came up with his 12-year old son and asked if we were the owners of the Model 3. It was the first they’d seen. The son knew everything about the specs of the Model 3. They both smiled as we showed them our car. His son’s knowledge, excitement and pure joy in witnessing an all-electric vehicle gave us hope for the future. All in all, I found that charging more often while driving long distances was less stressful on my body as I wasn’t confined to a car for long periods of time, and the charging stop enabled us more opportunities to limber up! We absolutely love our Model 3. It is the best purchase we have ever made and we wouldn’t purchase any other car! Currently, 7,000 Tesla Model 3S are made each week. This number is expected to grow to 10,000 vehicles per week by the end of the year!

Golf carts – Fun, useful, and not just for golf!
Ivan Vreeman and grandson Dillon show off just a few of the carts waiting to go to new homes. Harmony Golf Carts starts with about 120 new carts every spring. Photo by Julie Little By Julie Little Harmony Golf Carts is a great place to visit because golf carts are just plain fun! From Hwy. 52 in Harmony, go east on 4th at Kwik Trip toward Harmony Golf Course – you can’t miss it. Owner Ivan Vreeman and his wife Tami say they sell about 100 carts a year from their huge selection of Yamaha and EZ Go, new and used, “Plain Jane” or fully loaded, gas or electric carts. One reason Vreeman believes his carts are popular with buyers? “Lots of people sell golf carts but not everybody works on them. I service the carts too. Golf carts don’t need a lot of service. Oil changes yearly and a new battery every five to seven years for electric models.” Vreeman could list many reasons to own a golf cart: around the grounds quickly. Carts can be hauled to the site on a pickup, on a 4x8 trailer, or in a “toy hauler” camper. optional back seat with a cargo carrier that folds down. Southland Auto & Diesel does it all
Brandt Alrick, Isaac Hurst (holding Jet), and Jay Alrick are ready to keep your vehicle rolling smoothly at Southland Auto & Diesel. Photo by Rich Wicks By RichWicks If you drive a vehicle, you should know about Southland Auto & Diesel. Located in Spring Valley, just west of Ace Hardware, Southland is a hidden gem of automotive expertise. Owner Isaac Hurst explained that, “We’ve been here since 2010. I actually started out selling used cars,” but he adds, “I would work on my own cars that I bought and then sell those, and so then I transitioned into just working on cars once I got busy enough that people just wanted me to work on their other cars that they had… and it’s grown from there... Nine years later and we’ve got myself and two other full-time employees.” Jay Alrick and Brandt Soukup are the other full-time members of the crew, and they work under the watchful eye of Southland’s mascot, a dog named Jet. When asked what services he offers, Hurst said, “We do pretty much anything, from oil changes to new engines. We also try to stay up to date on the new technology with the computers and scan tools.” For the past three years, Southland has also offered 24-hour towing services, including jump starts, lock-outs, and accident response. He said the towing services have been growing steadily, and he recently added a second tow truck, but he and his crew enjoy staying busy. Hurst said, “We started selling tires a number of years ago, and we’ve gotten busy with that, too. We try to be full service for our customers.” When Hurst was asked what Southland specializes in, he responded, “We pride ourselves on the diagnostic part of it. We See SOUTHLAND Page 6 ➤

don’t give up… I really enjoy being able to save the day. Whether it be another shop looked at a vehicle and they couldn’t get it fixed and we could… or just helping somebody out, whether it’s somebody traveling through town that’s broken down, I like to help turn a bad situation into a good situation.” This philosophy carries through into Hurst’s
off-work time as well, since he is a firefighter for the city of Spring Valley. Hurst said he’s often asked how he came up with the name of his business, and he explained that he is originally from Tennessee, so that’s why he named his business Southland (though he admits it’s also very fitting since he’s in southern Minnesota). Hurst acknowledges that some local citizens are still not aware of his business, but said the growth
has “mainly been through word of mouth. We do some advertising, in a couple of papers. Other than that, we don’t do a whole lot of advertising. I try to treat my customers like I would want to be treated if I went into their business. We try to treat people fairly, and I think that’s the best advertising.” In looking toward the future in automotive shops, Hurst said, “The more technology that they put into cars, which is more
creature comforts, more safety features, which are all great for the driving experience, but that’s more and more stuff that you can’t work on at home. The shops are going to have to keep up on that.” He also stated that he and his crew are looking to expand into a larger building in the coming years, so they can better keep
up with the demand. Hurst said he appreciates being a part of the local business economy, and added, “We’re really thankful for our customers. I try to shop local and spend my money here, because people spend their money with me. I appreciate each and every one of our customers.”

state. It also sets a goal of increasing the amount of electric vehicles in Minnesota from about 6,000 today to 200,000 in 2030. “Electric vehicles reduce pollution, improve public health, and are more efficient than internal combustion engines,” said MnDOT Commissioner Margaret Anderson Kelliher. “They are also a lot of fun to drive.” Electric vehicles are cheaper to maintain and operate than traditional cars, according to the report. Although electric vehicles currently cost more than similar sized vehicles, the cost will decrease as more electric vehicles enter the market and the technology becomes more prevalent. The vision document also addresses potential benefits that will come with greater electric vehicle use, including: job creation that will support local and state economies, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improvements in air quality and public health, and support for environmental justice and social equity. “Minnesota’s climate is changing and we must address this by reducing greenhouse gases in all parts of our economy, including our transportation sector,” says Commissioner Laura Bishop of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. “Our recent Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Report revealed that expanding electric vehicles provides Minnesotans with a big opportunity for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the health of Minnesotans everywhere.” For more information and to view the report, visit MnDOT at: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/ sustainability/electric- vehicles. html or MPCA at: https://www. pca.state.mn.us/encouragingelectric-vehicle-use-minnesota.
