BOYS OF ’61 CAMP IN SPRING VALLEY By Rich Wicks As part of Spring Valley’s annual Loyalty Days observance, the Civil War reenactment group known as the “Boys of ‘61” camped in Spring Valley’s Spring Creek Park, and gave demonstrations of practices used by the soldiers during the Civil War. One especially popular part of their demonstrations was the cannon firing. Corporal Jason Grimm explained that he is a member of the Battery I, First US artillery group. Their stated goals include education about the Civil War, as well as honoring and preserving the memory of those who fought in the war. But at several events throughout the year, he and other reenactors come together as the Boys of ’61. One of their
goals, he explained, is to raise awareness and funds, to help create a state memorial to all of the Minnesotans who fought in the Civil War. “We’re basically portraying living history, firing demonstrations, teaching people what is was like to man these cannons, and then also some of the daily life of the soldiers… We’re interpreting Civil War soldiers as kind of a memorial and to raise awareness and raise funds for the Boys of ’61, which is a non-profit group dedicated to honoring the memory of Civil War soldiers, particularly from Minnesota.” Grimm said. Corporal Grimm said his group participates in actual target competitions with their cannons, some of which weigh over a ton. He said to prepare
for the competition, they practice by honing in on a target roughly the size of a door, at a range of 1,000 yards. He said his team can often hit 12 or 13 out of 15 during this practice. During the actual competition, the range is still 1,000 yards, but the target is about the size of a sheet of legal paper. This, he explains, takes a lot of skill, and some luck. Corporal Grimm also noted an interesting bit of Minnesota history. He explained, “By happenstance, our Governor at the time was in Washington D.C. when Lincoln put out his call for troops after Fort Sumter was fired upon. The Governor went to the Secretary of War and said, ‘I volunteer 1,000 troops for the defense of the country.’” In that way,
Civil War encampment in Spring Valley. Minnesota was the very first state to volunteer troops to fight for the Union in the Civil War. Grimm summarized that
somewhere around 15,000 Minnesotans served in the Civil War. He said many See BOYS OF ‘61 Page 3 ➤

joined due to patriotism (Minnesota had become a state just a few years before the war) while simple economics was another reason. Young farmers realized they would get a decent wage for joining, and they saw it as a way to get ahead financially before returning to farming. Unfortunately, many never returned from the war. Grimm stated that more Americans died in the Civil War than all other wars combined, with roughly 2% of the population dying during the four years of the war. He also noted that many more died of disease or infection than from the immediate damage of war wounds. Grimm welcomes anyone interested to check out their

website (minnesotaboysof61.org) and Facebook page, and to attend more of their events. He said he believes this type of “living history” has particular value, because whereas a person can read a book about history, “If it’s something that you can physically see and interact with, that has way more meaning.” Sarah Kohn, one of the local organizers and volunteers for Loyalty Days, explained that the Boys of ’61 was just one part of Spring Valley’s Loyalty Days. She said the events included a golf tournament, VFW banquet, flag ceremonies, and a grand parade on Sunday (including a visit from President and Mrs. Lincoln). She added that the whole purpose of Loyalty Days is to show appreciation for all veterans who have served our country.

AFTER 50 YEARS OF SILENCE, LOST SOLDIER’S FAMILY LEARNS THE TRUTH
Arlo Mathison in uniform.

By Hannah Wingert Arlo Mathison was on his way to fight in the Battle of the Bulge when tragedy struck and the boat he was on sank. His son Chuck was only 2 ½ years old when his father died, so the only memories he has of him are the stories told to him after by his family. Arlo was born in 1919 and moved to the Spring Valley area with his family when he was 13 years old. In 1941, he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Utzinger, and their son Chuck was born in 1942. Later that year, Arlo was drafted into the Army. In late 1944, Arlo was stationed in England, where he was able to spend some time with his sisters who were also
stationed there and on December 24, Arlo boarded the USS Leopoldville with over 2,000 other American soldiers to cross the English Channel. They were on their way to Ardennes to fight in the Battle of the Bulge as reinforcements. Just five miles from their destination, a German submarine torpedoed the ship. Unfortunately, a combination of things led to it becoming the second worst American maritime sinking during World War II. When the ship was hit, it was Christmas Eve night and so it took a while for the call for help to be answered. As the soldiers had just boarded the ship earlier that day, they had missed the lifeboat drill. Many didn’t even know how the life

jackets worked. When rescuers did arrive, they couldn’t find the survivors floating in the water because it was dark. The life jackets had lights built into them specifically for that reason, but the men didn’t know that and so didn’t turn them on. Over 700 American soldiers died, some when the torpedo hit the ship and others in the frigid waters of the channel. The bodies of almost 500 of the men lost that night were never recovered. Military leaders at the time realized that such a disaster would be bad for morale, espeSee MATHISON Page 5 ➤

cially since the Battle of the Bulge was currently ongoing and the end of the war was drawing near. Because of that, the sinking of the Leopoldville was classified as top secret, and survivors were instructed not to talk or write about it for 50 years. It would be months before many of the families would even be notified of their loved one’s death. Arlo was listed as missing for six months, and it wasn’t until August 1945 that Chuck’s mother was informed that her husband had died. The news shook his family to the core. “My grandmother, I think, never got over it,” Chuck said. Arlo’s body was recovered when he drifted to shore in France after dying of exposure in the cold water. He was
buried in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer. Five weeks after the sinking of the Leopoldville, Arlo’s wife Dorothy gave birth to their daughter, who he would never meet. Their son Chuck had been born before Arlo was sent overseas, but because he was so young, he doesn’t have any memories of his father. When Chuck asked his mom about his dad, she told him that he had drowned. “She never really talked about him,” he said. Chuck stayed close to his dad’s family, spending summers with his grandparents and listening to his aunts and uncles tell stories about Arlo. In 1994, the survivors of the Leopoldville were finally free to talk about what happened and several published books about the sinking that same year.
Chuck was able to read one of the books by Allan Andrade and learned more about the tragedy that took his father’s life. “It was hard reading, especially since my dad was involved,” he said. One of the things that struck him the hardest was that his father was a supply sergeant in the Army, a relatively safe position. “If they hadn’t gotten torpedoed, he probably would’ve never seen combat,” Chuck said. In 2009, Chuck had the opportunity to attend a ceremony at Arlington commemorating the lives lost in the Leopoldville sinking. While he was there, he was able to talk with two of the survivors. Neither one had known his dad Arlo, but he still appreciated hearing their stories. “They were interesting to talk to,” he said. “So much happened and people today don’t realize.”

WEDDING PLANS THWARTED BY WWII
Marjorie Scott with her fiancé Robert Bowe before he left for Europe. Photo submitted By Hannah Wingert One of 97-year-old Marjorie Scott’s favorite memories of her fiance Robert Bowe was when the two of them would go out on Sunday nights. They didn’t go out on a fancy dates though. Instead, Marjorie and Robert would drive down to the small country schoolhouse where she taught, to start the fire in the stove so it would be warm for the students when they arrived the next morning. Memories like those are
all that Marjorie has left of Robert. He was drafted into the Army and sent to Europe to fight in World War II. During the Battle of the Bulge, he lost his life and never returned home. Robert came from a large Catholic family. Before he was born, his parents immigrated from Ireland to the United States and settled near Preston to farm. “They were just as hard up as could be,” Marjorie recalled. Robert finished eighth grade and, as was common at the
time, quit school to work on the family farm. She remembers that Robert saved up for a car when they were dating. One night, he was taking her to see a movie and when he rounded a corner, the door flew open, and Marjorie almost fell out. She still laughs when she thinks of that date. Robert and Marjorie were together for five years. She doesn’t remember when they got engaged exactly, but knows that their engagement lasted quite a while. She spent a lot of time with his family, before Robert was drafted and after he left. “They were very good to me,” she recalled. “I wasn’t Catholic, you know, but that didn’t seem to matter.” The couple never got the chance to plan their wedding or even set a date for it. They had decided to wait until the war was over before moving forward with that part of their lives. But April of 1945 brought sad news. The superintendent of the school where Marjorie worked told her that he had received a message that one of the Bowe boys had been killed in action on April 17 and asked her to come along when he drove out to the Bowe farm to break the news to the family. Marjorie remembers that Robert’s parents
were happy to see her when she got out of the car, but when they saw the superintendent, their happiness turned to tears. They knew what that meant. “I think it just wasn’t fair that his life had to be snapped like that,” Marjorie said. Robert had been acting as a scout during the Battle of the Bulge and was struck down during the fight, dying instantly. Marjorie was devastated when she heard the news, especially since she was looking forward to him returning soon. “I thought he was coming home. I thought it (the war) was just about over when I got that letter,” she said. For the next year, Marjorie lost interest in going anywhere or doing

anything. “I just worked in the flower beds at home and cried tears there,” she said. “You grew up in a hurry.” Marjorie was eventually able to move on with her life. At first, she stayed close to Robert’s family, even visiting his sister while she was on vacation one time. Eventually though, they lost touch and as of now, another of Robert’s sisters is the only one she still knows the whereabouts of. Marjorie married and had three children, who she is very proud of. Throughout her life, she’s always remembered her first love, Robert Bowe. “I still pray for him everyday,” she said. “He was a good guy.”

HARMONY AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY ANNOUNCES ITS GIRLS STATE SELECTION The Harmony American Legion Auxiliary is proud to announce that Hailey Lange has been chosen to represent Harmony at the 73rd Hailey Lange
annual Girls State program to be held June 9-15, 2019, at Bethel University in St. Paul. Lange is the daughter of Derek and Sandi Lange and Kim Kiehne, all of Harmony. She is currently a junior at Fillmore Central High and is also a junior member of the Harmony American Legion Auxiliary.
The purposes of the Girls State program are to provide citizenship training for girls of high school age; to afford them an opportunity to live together as self-governing citizens; to inform them about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship, in order that they may understand and participate in the
functioning of their government; and to help them grasp the meaning of some of the responsibilities which they must assume when they become adults. The entire Girls State program is a non-political, non-partisan, non-sectarian attempt to instill in these potential leaders a love of God and country. They practice

CELEBRATE ALL MILITARY THIS MAY Memorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America. Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today. Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. on May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designat-
ed the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the South began to recognize it as well.

Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength. Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves. There are many ways to honor active, reserve and former veterans, as well as those who died in service

AMERICAN FLAG ETIQUETTE The American flag symbolizes many things to many people. While the American flag is proudly displayed in millions of buildings and homes across the United States year-round, it tends to draw special attention each summer, when Americans celebrate their independence on July 4. The Flag Code formalizes and unifies the standards of respect that must be given to the flag, even containing specific instructions regarding how the flag should not be used. The following are some of the rules that govern how to display the American flag. Raising and lowering the flag According to USFlag.org, the American flag should be raised quickly and lowered slowly and
ceremoniously. While the Flag Code suggests the flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, if it is displayed
at night, it should be illuminated. The flag should be saluted as it is hoisted, and when lowered that salute should be held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the final note of music, whichever is the longest. When displayed indoors, the flag should be displayed to the

right of the speaker, staging area or sanctuary. Any additional flags hanging in the room should always hang to the left of the American flag. When flags are grouped for display, the American flag should be in the center and at the highest point of any flag. In mourning The American flag is often displayed in mourning. When placing the flag at half staff, first hoist it to the peak for an instant before lowering it to a position halfway between the top and bottom of the staff. D u r i n g mourning, when the time comes to lower the flag, it should once again be momentarily raised to the peak before it is lowered. The American flag is flown at half staff when mourning designated, principal government leaders. It also must be flown at half
staff upon presidential or gubernatorial order. When covering a casket, the American flag should be placed with the union at the head and over the left shoulder. The flag should never be lowered into the grave. Parading the flag When the American flag is carried in a procession, such as in a parade, the flag should always be to the right of the marchers when it is the lone flag being represented. When other flags are carried, the American flag may be centered in front of the others or carried to their right. Parade audiences should salute the flag as it passes in the procession. Flag restrictions There are many conditions under which the American flag is not to be used. These include: as a decoration. Use bunting to decorate with the colors of the American flag, always ensuring

The flag also should not be embroidered, printed or impressed on articles such as cushions, napkins, boxes, or anything considered temporary that is likely to be discarded after use. part of a costume. The American flag is an enduring symbol of freedom and sacrifice to millions of people across the globe. The flag should always be displayed with the utmost respect and in adherence to the guidelines set forth by the Flag Code.
