By Hannah Wingert “I wasn’t ready,” Marlys Tuftin of Whalan said. While Tuftin was studying at Winona State, her college roommate asked her to join the Navy with her on the buddy system. Tuftin wasn’t interested at the time and ended up turning her down for a job in civilian nursing, but five years later, she had second thoughts. “I decided to try it for three years,” she said. Those three years turned into 23. In 1978, Tuftin started her career in the Navy Nurse Corps at the Naval Hospital in Bremerton, Wash. She spent three years there, first working in the general medical ward for a year and then completing some advanced training during the next two years. During her time at Bremer-
into orthopedics where she became the ward charge nurse. She found it challenging, but rewarding as she assisted with new medical advancements such as hip replacements. During that time, she also went for two weeks of training at Camp Pendleton in California. She and her colleagues lived and worked in tents that they had to set up themselves. The group completed field
ton, Tuftin had the privilege of attending the decommissioning ceremony for the USS Higbee, a WWII destroyer named for a Navy nurse. “That was a highlight of my time there,” she said. She also took part in moving the hospital from an older facility at the shipyard to a new building outside of the town. Doing so was complicated as some of the personnel had to be at the new hospital to accept patients and get everything ready while the rest of the crew stayed at the old hospital to prepare the patients for transport and close it down. From Bremerton, Tuftin was sent to Oakland Naval Hospital in Oakland, Calif., where she spent nearly four years. At first she worked in the coronary care unit and then moved

training for a Rapid Deployment Medical Facility which is a forward unit used during wartime to triage, treat injuries, and stabilize patients before sending them to a hospital. After Oakland, Tuftin moved to Whidby Island Naval Hospital near Oak Harbor, Wash. She served there for three years, spending time in the ER and in family practice. While there, she
was able to take part in some new responsibilities. “I was given the opportunity to serve as the hospital’s Disaster Preparedness Officer and also coordinated mass casualty exercises for the hospital in conjunction with emergency responders at the Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, and the civilian community of Island County,” she explained. “These joint exercises were staged realistically and with varying scenarios that challenged emergency responders and promoted coordination of efforts and communications among the responders across agencies.” Tuftin’s next stop was overseas at Keflavik Naval Hospital in Iceland where she spent 18 months. From Iceland, she moved to Marine Corps Air Station El Toro back in California. While there, she attended to many reservists who were preparing to serve in Desert Shield. After three years, she was on the move again, this time to the University of Washington in Seattle to obtain a Master’s in Nursing. After that, her next three years were spent at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. This time, she worked in administrative positions in a multi-service specialty surgical unit and managed care. Tuftin’s final tour of duty took her back to where it all started. While at Bremerton for the second time she once again participated in a training for a forward deployed medical facility, although this one was more advanced than the first. “They had top-notch equipment,” she said. “That was one of the highlights of my time in Bremerton as See TUFTIN Page 4 ➤

FC GRADS MAKE A CAREER IN ARMED FORCES By Rich Wicks Two Fillmore-Central High School graduates have taken different paths in the military, but both are now stationed in Miami, Florida. Becky (Polzin) Wyness serves in the Coast Guard, while David Fink serves in the Army. They recently agreed to share their stories with the Journal. Becky Wyness explained that, “I grew up in Preston, but we moved around a lot. I lived in Harmony, and out by Greenleafton, and Fountain.” When she graduated in 1999 and considered going into the military, she researched the options available, and chose the Coast Guard. As Becky described, “The Coast Guard is a branch of the military, but we fall under the Department of Homeland Security, and that is a change since I’ve been in. And most of what we do is centered around search and rescue, and law enforcement. I’ve done a tour in New Orleans, a tour in San Diego, a tour in Mobile, Ala., a tour in Bodega Bay, Calif., a tour in Michigan City, Ind., and a tour in the Middle East.” This July marked 20 years for Becky in the Coast Guard, and she said it’s been an enjoyable career. She mentioned that she recently came back to do recruiting at Fillmore-Central, and she gets to travel quite a bit for her job and in her free time. She stated, “I’m married and I have a four-year-old daughter who keeps me very, very on my toes… We travel a lot; the cool thing about being in the military is you know people from all over.” Becky added that since most Coast Guard locations are on the coast, her tours have tended to be in large metropolitan areas, and she’s enjoyed that. She said, “I grew up in small towns. It’s such an incredible experience to join the military, and experience all these different cultures. far as operational type training.” In 2001, after 23 years of serving in the Navy Nurse Corps, it was finally time for Tuftin to hang up her hat. Her retirement ceremony took place at Bremerton where her commanding officer, Captain Christine Hunter officiated. Tuftin appreciates all that she gained from being in the Navy. “Training and readiness is a huge aspect of military service, and working together as a team was extremely rewarding during my entire time in the U.S. Navy,” she explained. “One of the things that set us apart from civilian nursing was that type of training. We were trained in areas that you normally wouldn’t find in a civilian job.” One of her favorite things about the military was the camaraderie. “It’s a lot of fun to have everyone working together for a common goal,” she said. She still stays in touch with some of the people with whom she served. The hardest part of her time in the Navy was the constant moving from one location to the next. “It’s a lot to get ready for the moves,” she said. The military
did help her move though which made it easier. “It seemed like every transport I had, I always ran into someone I’d served with before,” she said. Tuftin was born in Preston. She moved around a bit with her family, but moved back to Whalan when she was in fifth grade. “I consider myself a Whalanite,” she said. From then on, she attended school in Lanesboro and graduated from there. In September, she attended her 50th class reunion. After retiring from the Navy, Tuftin worked for about five years as a nurse at the Franciscan Skemp family practice clinic in Caledonia. Since retiring from nursing completely, she has been involved with the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary and has also kept busy with church activities as well as serving as the mayor of Whalan. “That has kept me pretty busy,” she said. She lives next door to her parents in Whalan, in a house built on the site of her grandmother’s home. “It was good to serve,” Tuftin said. “But once you fully retire, there are always things to do. There are lots of organizations out there that need help.”

By Claudine Zap While most know that Veterans Day honors those who have served in the military, the meaning behind its exact date (November 11) may not be so familiar. Here’s the back-story: Back in 1918, in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, a stop to hostilities was declared, ending World War I. An armistice to cease the fighting on the Western Front was signed by the Allied powers and Germany. President Woodrow Wilson immediately proclaimed the
day “Armistice Day,” kicking off the annual commemoration on November 11. But over the years, with veterans returning from World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day — a day reserved to honor veterans returning from all wars. But 11/11 still represented the end of the Great War in the public’s mind, and the date stuck. In 1921, unidentified dead from the war were buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., Westminster Abbey in London, and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
The tradition to honor those killed in the war but never identified continues every year in the U.S. The ceremony is held at 11 a.m. at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Congress designated Veterans Day as a legal holiday in 1938, and since then, most Americans have come to know it as a day for store sales and parades. Yahoo! Searches on the holiday have already surged on the Web. People want to know “veterans day history,” “veterans day closings,” veterans day sales,” and “veterans day free meals.”
5 FACTS TO KNOW ABOUT VETERANS DAY

Photo from www.defense.gov By Katie Lange Veterans Day is a well-known American holiday, but there are also a few misconceptions about it — like how it’s spelled or whom exactly it celebrates. To clear some of that up, here are the important facts you should know. Veterans Day does NOT have an apostrophe A lot of people think it’s “Veteran’s Day” or “Veterans’ Day,” but they’re wrong. The holiday is not a day that “belongs” to one veteran or multiple veterans, which is what an apostrophe implies. It’s a day for honoring all veterans — so no apostrophe needed. Veterans Day is NOT the same as Memorial Day A lot of Americans get this confused, and we’ll be honest — it can be a little annoying to all of the living veterans out there. Memorial Day is a time to remember those who gave their lives for our country, particularly in battle or from wounds they suffered in battle. Veterans Day honors all of those who have served the country in war or peace — dead or alive — although it’s largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices.
It was originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I. World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, the fighting ended about seven months before that when the Allies and Germany put into effect an armistice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, was largely considered the end of “the war to end all wars” and dubbed Armistice Day. In 1926, Congress officially recognized it as the end of the war, and in 1938, it became an official holiday, primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I. But then World War II and the Korean War happened, so on June 1, 1954, at the urging of veterans service organizations, Congress amended the commemoration yet again by changing the word “armistice” to “veterans” so the day would honor American veterans of all wars. For a while, Veterans Day’s date was changed, too, and it confused everybody. Congress signed the Uniform Holiday Bill in 1968 to ensure
that a few federal holidays — Veterans Day included — would be celebrated on a Monday. Officials hoped it would spur travel and other family activities over a long weekend, which would stimulate the economy. For some inexplicable reason, the bill set Veterans Day commemorations for the fourth Monday of every October. On October 25, 1971, the first Veterans Day under this new bill was held. We’re not sure why it took three years to implement, but not surprisingly, there was a lot of confusion about the change, and many states were unhappy, choosing to continue to recognize the day as they previously had — in November. Within a few years, it became pretty apparent that most U.S. citizens wanted to celebrate Veterans Day on November 11, since it was a matter of historic and patriotic significance. So on September 20, 1975, President Gerald Ford signed another law (Public Law 94-97), which returned the annual observance to its original date starting in 1978. Other countries celebrate it, too, in their own ways. World War I was a multinational effort, so it makes sense that our allies also wanted to celebrate their veterans on November 11. The name of the day and the types of commemorations differ, however. Canada and Australia both call November 11 “Remembrance Day.” Canada’s observance is pretty similar to our own, except many of its citizens wear red poppy flowers to honor their war dead. In Australia, the day is more akin to our Memorial Day. Great Britain calls it “Remembrance Day,” too, but observes it on the Sunday closest to November 11 with parades, services and two minutes of silence in London to honor those who lost their lives in war.

He described his decision to join the military, saying, “I was in college, at the University of Minnesota, when 9/11 happened. I was doing a research project on the University’s ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) program, and when 9/11 happened, it really changed my perspective on a lot of things, and I felt the need to serve, so I ended up joining the Reserve… and then right away I got activated to be part of the initial invasion of Iraq.” David volunteered for a second tour in Iraq in 2005, where he served as a team leader, and he again returned to Iraq in 2008, as a squad leader. Following his third Iraq tour, David said, “I went full-time Army after that.” In 2012 and into 2013, he served in Afghanistan, and has since been stationed in Chicago, in Minnesota, and now has been in Miami for just over a year. First Sergeant (E8) is David’s rank, and when asked what his military “job” is, David replied,
“I’m a Combat Engineer. Combat Engineers do a lot with demolition and explosives, and maneuvers.” He explained that while stationed in Miami, “I’m the senior enlisted man in the company. I work at an engineer battalion.” David said his overseas experiences have taught him much, saying, “I’m a firm believer if you’re going to lead people, you’ve got to experience it firsthand yourself… I’ve spent close to six years overseas. You see the worst that humanity has to offer, but you also see the best. You see people act in amazing heroic ways during some of the worst experiences.” When asked how long he plans to stay in the Army, David quipped, “At this point, I enjoy it, so I’ll probably go until I just don’t enjoy it anymore, or they kick me out.” Getting kicked out seems unlikely, though, as David has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Parachutist Badge, and Air Assault Badge, among others.

Having graduated from Columbia Southern University with a Bachelor’s in Psychology, David said that whenever he retires from the Army, he would like to pursue his master’s degree, stating, “I’d like to be able to work with veterans when I get done, and offer that firsthand experience.” Regarding his younger days, David shared that, “I’m really thankful to have grown up in Preston. I love going back.” Nowadays, David spends much of his free time either on the beaches of Miami, or out riding his motorcycle. When asked what advice he’d give anyone considering the military, David pointed out the good pay and benefits, and added, “It’s a great opportunity. It’s not for everybody, but it’s probably for more people than they realize.” David also shared that, “I’m very proud to represent my friends and family and hometown. I’m very proud to wear the uniform.” He also shared his appreciation for all other veterans. Veterans Day is an annual holiday when veterans of the armed forces are honored and celebrated in the United States. Many people confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. While both days honor members of the armed forces, there's a distinction between the two holidays. Memorial Day, which is celebrated in May, is a day designated for remembering servicemen and servicewomen who died while serving. Veterans Day, which is observed in November, honors all military veterans.
The role of the brave men and women who serve in the military is an important one, and it's one that warrants appreciation and celebration. The following are a few easy ways to celebrate veterans and their significant contribution to our country this Veterans Day. ing in the military can feel like a thankless job, as those who have not served might not be aware of the risks men and women in the military take and the sacrifices they must make to protect our country and help
the less fortunate across the globe. As a result, something as simple as saying "Thank you" to a current service member or military veteran can go a long way. Veterans know they don't serve in vain, but it's still a great idea to let them know how much you appreciate their efforts and sacrifices.

Visiting a hospital to get to know a veteran and spend some time with him or her, sharing a few laughs and thanking them for their service, is a great way to celebrate the holiday and lift a veteran's spirits at the same time. AMERICAN FLAG ETIQUETTE The American flag symbolizes many things to many people. While the American flag is proudly displayed in millions of buildings and homes across the United States year-round, it tends to draw special attention each summer, when Americans celebrate their independence on July 4. The Flag Code formalizes and unifies the standards of respect that must be given to the flag, even containing specific instructions regarding how the flag should not be used. The following are some of the rules that govern how to display the American flag. Raising and lowering the flag According to USFlag.org, the American flag should be raised quickly and lowered slowly and
ceremoniously. While the Flag Code suggests the flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, if it is displayed
at night, it should be illuminated. The flag should be saluted as it is hoisted, and when lowered that salute should be held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the final note of music, whichever is the longest. When displayed indoors, the flag should be displayed to the
right of the speaker, staging area or sanctuary. Any additional flags hanging in the room should always hang to the left of the American flag. When flags are grouped for display, the American flag should be in the center and at the highest point of any flag. In mourning The American flag is often displayed in mourning. When placing the flag at half staff, first hoist it to the peak for an instant before lowering it to a posi- tion halfway between the top and bottom of the staff. During mourning, when the time comes to lower the flag, it should once again be momentarily raised to the peak before it is lowered. The American flag is flown at half staff when mourning designated, principal government lead-

ers. It also must be flown at half staff upon presidential or gubernatorial order. When covering a casket, the American flag should be placed with the union at the head and over the left shoulder. The flag should never be lowered into the grave. Parading the flag When the American flag is carried in a procession, such as in a parade, the flag should always be to the right of the marchers when it is the lone flag being represented. When other flags are carried, the American flag may be centered in front of the others or carried to their right. Parade audiences should salute the flag as it passes in the procession. Flag restrictions There are many conditions under which the American flag is not to be used. These include: as a decoration. Use bunting to decorate with the colors of the
REMEMBERING PEARL HARBOR December 7, 2019, marks the 78th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. This was a pivotal day in world history, ultimately leading the United States to enter the Second World War. Prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan participated in a series of invasions into China, believing the only way to solve its economic and demographic problems was to expand into China and take over its import market. This attitude helped
create rising tension with the United States, and American officials ultimately responded with economic sanctions and trade embargoes. Although it seemed war was inevitable, the Japanese preempted the American military with a surprise attack targeting Pearl Harbor, which is 2,000 miles from the U.S. mainland and 4,000 miles from Japan. Pearl Harbor is a U.S. naval base located near Honolulu, HI. On a Sunday morning on
December 7, 1941, just before 8:00 a.m. local time, Japanese fighter planes descended on the base in a surprise attack. Five additional attacks followed throughout the day. The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, which included eight battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. While the military equipment could ultimately be replaced, the more than 2,400 military personnel and civilians who died paid the
ultimate price. It is believed the United States was especially surprised by the attack, as American military leaders felt, if an attack were to take place, it would come from the sea rather than the air. In addition, American intelligence officials were confident that any Japanese attack would take place in one of the European colonies in the South Pacific, such as Singapore or Indochina, which are closer to Japan than Hawaii.

However, even 78 years later, the residual emotional effects of the attack continue, particularly among WWII veterans, as well as the family members of those who perished.

Military personnel are unsung heroes whose sacrifices for their country make it possible for hundreds of millions of people to enjoy freedoms that many people across the globe do not have. In recognition of those sacrifices, many people want to show their appreciation to both active and retired servicemen and women. Fortunately, there are many ways to do just that.
to the United States Department of Defense, the United States military currently deploys active duty personnel in nearly 150 countries. Many of those troops are separated from their families for months at a time, and that separation can make things difficult for their loved ones back home. If a neighbor's spouse is deployed overseas, offer to help around

Whether it's mowing their lawn, dropping their kids off at school or inviting the whole family over for dinner one night each week, such gestures can go a long way toward easing the burden faced by spouses of deployed military personnel. Servicemen and women on active duty do not enjoy many of the luxuries that tend to be taken for
granted back home. But men and women who want to show their appreciation can send care packages to active personnel serving overseas. An organization such as Operation Gratitude (operationgratitude.com), which to date has sent nearly 1.3 million care packages to active personnel, sends care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, personal hygiene products and handmade items. This provides active personnel a taste of home while also letting them know their extraordinary efforts are appreciated and not forgotten. tal. Unfortunately, many servicemen and women return home from their deployments with injuries or health conditions that require long-term care. By volunteering at veteran hospitals, men and women can help veterans overcome their injuries and provide much-needed help to staff at hospitals that could use a helping more information. For those who want to support servicemen and women but don't have much free time to
do so, financial donations can go a long way toward improving the quality of life of active and retired military personnel. Many programs work with veterans to improve their quality of life, and such organizations rely heavily on financial donations to make their missions a reality. The Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org), for example, works to honor and empower servicemen and women who incurred physical or mental injuries or illnesses on or after September 11, 2001. The organization relies on the generosity of individuals who want to help wounded military personnel overcome their injuries and illnesses. Based on audited financial statements of the 2014 fiscal ending on September 30, 2014, 80.6% of total expenditures went to services and programs catering to wounded military personnel and their families, assuring prospective donors that their donations will go toward helping those in need. There are many ways that civilians can express their gratitude to active and retired military personnel.
