Welcome to Viewing Room 2016 Viewing Room was successfully introduced in the 2011 edition of Film Bazaar with the aim to present Indian and South Asian films that are recently completed or in the final stages of editing and post-production. The films presented are seeking finishing funds/world sales/ distribution partners/participation in film festivals. These films are viewed on individual computer terminals in private booths via Viewing Room software that has been exclusively designed for this purpose. Film programmers, distributors, world sales agents and investors can watch complete films, access details of the films as well as contact the directors or producers.
These films are absolutely fresh; most are works in progress, unreleased and have yet to have their world premiere at any film festival. Many of them are also looking out for finishing funds. Most of the films in this section are having their first market screening at this Film Bazaar. This year we have 32 films in the FBR section. Film Library (FL) – All feature-length submissions to Viewing Room are showcased in a section called Film Library, which includes both Fiction and Documentary Features. This year we have 132 films in the Film Library Section.
This catalogue contains information on these films divided into three main categories:
Short Films – All submitted films under the duration of 60 minutes are in this category.
Film Bazaar Recommends (FBR) – Film Bazaar Recommends, as the name suggests, is a specially curated section comprising films recommended by the Film Bazaar Team from amongst the film submissions.
This year we have 38 short films in this section.
The films in this section are specially recommended by the curator from the total feature film submissions to Viewing Room. The films in Viewing Room are looking for either or all of three main criteria i.e. ‘Gap Financing | Distribution & Sales | Film Festivals’.
This year, a total of 202 films are presented in Viewing Room, of which 32 are Film Bazaar Recommends, 132 are in the Film Library and 38 are Short films. Deepti DCunha has been the consultant and curator for the Viewing Room at the NFDC Film Bazaar since 2011.

A Dream Document Awaiting World Premiere
Dreamers, achievers and inefficient people from all over India arrive at the shores, streets and studios of Mumbai to become stars. Deluded by the kaleidoscopic illusion of the cinematic phantasm, swarms of young men and women take the do-or-die dive into the meta-real miasma of movies, to either prevail or perish. Mumbai thus turns into an axiomatic city, a real El Dorado, to survive where hungry hearts have to fight it out for their share of spotlight and realize their own individual iridescent dream. Aalim Zaib a.k.a Saaki, travels from Kashmir to Amravati and finally to Bombay. Movies, with their Mephistophelian promise of immortality and eternity demands from our protagonist, in exchange, the best years of his youth in Faustian sacrifice.

Limitless Awaiting World Premiere
We have come a long way since the days of Bobbi Gibb and Kathrine Switzer. Those were the days when women had to sneak their way in the world of long distance running. But is reality any different today? Do Indian women find it easy to step out of the confines of their homes and simply run? Limitless takes us into the lives of ordinary women marathon enthusiasts. Their joys, fears, worries and fights form the narrative of the film. As we dig deep we realize that their voices are reflective of women at large.

Newton Awaiting World Premiere
As India, the world’s largest democracy, braces itself for another general election with nine million polling booths, more than 800 million voters, and costing nearly $5 billion, Newton Kumar, a rookie Government clerk finds himself entrusted with a task that appears deceptively simple: conducting elections in a remote village in the jungles of Central India. The bushes teem with Communist guerrillas, who have been waging a decade old war against the State, even as the indigenous tribals live without any access to mainland amenities. Newton learns over the course of this eventful day that conducting ‘free and fair’ elections in a minefield like this is no child’s play. Unfazed by the cynicism and danger around him, Newton is determined to do his duty. But, as they say in the jungle, ‘the more the things change, the worse they will get’.

A Billion Colour Story
English | India Fiction | 115 mins
In a world rapidly being torn asunder by violence, division, racism and suspicion, there is a growing despondence and a feeling that almost all of humanity is at cross-purposes and most of it at war. There is a dire need for reassurance that not all is lost and the fundamental goodness of humanity is still intact. There ought to be more stories that reinforce our faith in each other rather than that mythical messiah who might never arrive to save us. Seen through the eyes of an innocent, but typical 21st century Indian child born of an inter-religion marriage, ‘A Billion Colour Story’ is a simple tale, told with a complete absence of frills.

It is obvious that the piece has been influenced by memories collected over time, the discrete images lodged in the artist’s mind and more nascent, less visible thoughts and ideas that dictate the choice of figures and colours. The film delves into those influences that eventually rendered themselves on canvas.

Black Sheep
Hindi, English | India, UK Documentary | 72 mins
‘Black Sheep’ provides an unflinching look into the lives of transgender women living in the slums of India. The Hijras of India come to bless weddings, yet they are shunned by the very society that seeks their blessings. When the Hijras arrive at Reshel Shah’s wedding, she found herself asking questions no one had answers for. Who are these women? What motivates them? Who do they love? She found that the people around her were soaked in superstition and urban legends. Reshel attempts to answer these questions, she sets out to meet and live with a group of Hijras. In getting to know these women beneath the labels they are shunned for, Reshel finds a world of acceptance, perseverance and love, which is as unbreakable as the women we get to know. Black Sheep shows a glimpse of the pain of ‘leaving the herd’ that these women endure to follow their own hearts.

...But Don’t Call Me A BASTARD Awaiting World Premiere
‘...But Don’t Call Me a BASTARD’ is set in a Bangladeshi Enclave, Madhya Mashaldanga village, an illusory ground of international political trap, where people are struggling over national identity crisis. The village is a piece of Bangladeshi land, completely locked by the Indian Territory. This film is the viewpoint of Jaynal Abedin, a Political Science student, who lives in the village with his fake Indian identity proof. Like any other enclave dweller, Jaynal’s situations forced him to take an active role in the Enclave-Exchange Movement. Sadly, he doesn’t have any knowledge about the two Indian villages, Jaridharala and Daribash, a few miles away from his native place and the Indian villagers who are deprived of their basic rights and are forced to cross international borders illegally for their daily needs. The film portrays this abuse of human rights, where people in these areas are neglected in their own country.

His life is interrupted by a proposal to create a mural for an exclusive restaurant in the city of Kolkata, a journey that brings young strong-minded painter Tithi into his life. Their relationship unfolds through the lines of the mural as they struggle between generations and life’s philosophies. For whom does a painter paint? Is it only for those who can pay? The film is adapted from Sirsendu Mukherjee’s story ‘Guhamanab’. A sturdily built Batakrishna Roy (Batu), the protagonist in his fifties, has recently retired from the armed forces. His wife passed away recently. To honour her last wish, their son Saju has been married off, perhaps a little too hurriedly. The relative positions of Batu, his son and his daughter-in-law resemble the three vertices. Sometimes in a reverie, Batu meets and talks to his dead wife, Sushmita. Her friend, Aparajita comes back to India after a long while. It doesn’t take Pinky long to understand how besotted Aparajita is with Batu. A mysterious caveman invades pinky’s dreams. That shrouded persona appears familiar. One day Pinky sees everything clearly, she knows now who that caveman with a guilt-laden heart is. Pinky stands in front of Batu and confesses her feelings. Batu takes it upon himself to solve this problem in his own inimitable manner.

The seasons change, and so does the music, transforming the mundane into the hypnotic. The love that they sing of is also a metaphor for the need of a friend, a family and a community to build polyphony of voices. There are stories of love, the field and the songs. ‘Up, Down and Sideways’, is a musical portrait of a community of rice cultivators and their memories of love and loss, created from working together on the fields.

The Take Over
English | India Documentary | 63 mins
Cinema, one of the greatest art forms of our time, providing popular entertainment, is the pre-eminent forum for ideas and selfexpression. Right before our eyes, Indian cinema is undergoing a revolution that may have a more far-reaching and fundamental impact than even the introduction of sound, colour or television. Digital technology is transforming how we look at movies and what movies look like. From modestly budgeted movies shot with digital still cameras, to blockbusters laden with computer-generated imagery, digital technology has evolved to an extent where film has been replaced as the primary means of creating and sharing motion pictures.

The Thinking Body Awaiting World Premiere
Indian classical dance forms provide a perfect vehicle for interactions of varied emotions and ‘rasas’ in perfect harmony, irrespective of time, space and gender. ‘The Thinking Body’ interprets the mind of the character it portrays through spiritual layers. Dance is the state of being that transcends one’s physical self, delving into the deeper states of the resonating mind within a spectrum of timelessness. The awakened human body is a reflection of one’s own thinking. Experiencing the self is a reflexive perception of one’s emotions and an interpretation of one’s innermost consciousness. It is an expression of ‘The Thinking Body’ and an acknowledgement of being alive.

A Close Shave
English | India 9 mins
Awaiting World Premiere
Shaving – a necessity, a ritual, or a social pattern? Man has been shaving since prehistoric times. Cave paintings show that the early men used to shave as well. The hunter-gatherers used the sharpened edges of their flints to shave their beards off. The Greeks called the ones who didn’t visit the barber ‘barbarians’. Throughout history, shaving has carried heavy cultural meaning for men. It translates into enhancing the social self, and has been so firmly cemented over time that it has become an involuntary act that most men carry out without much thought. The film attempts to look at ‘shaving’ as an anthropological tool and showcases the human experience of shaving as a means to understand the idea of a body ritual in a socio-cultural construction, through the life of an eighty-five year old for whom the probable outcomes of shaving, as projected by popular culture, are understandably meaningless.

From what we understand of the clips, an amateur filmmaker named Dhruv Vidur, along with two other people, Sagar and Deepanshu, decided to document a seemingly fictional story. The story was narrated to him by his father regarding a mythical creature that dwells in the forests of Faridabad, an extension of India’s capital, New Delhi. What they encountered at the forest led to their disappearance. The footage has not been edited or tampered with in any way by Workshop PoV Films. Dongar Dei Paribi Naahin I Cannot Give You My Forest
Kui | India 45 mins
In the brave new world, democratically elected governments do not bat an eyelid as they alienate citizens, reducing the original inhabitants to refugees on their own lands. While forests disappear and rivers are poisoned, an indifferent world looks the other way. ‘I Cannot Give You My Forest’ is a modern day rendition of the David and Goliath story, played out in an Orwellian setting. It is an intimate poetic window into the lives of the Kondh - the original dwellers (adivasis) of the lush forests of Niyamgiri, in the state of Odisha, India. Niyamgiri is under attack from marauding corporations and the Government for its minerals and pristine tropical forests. In their bid to wrest control, the government is also trying to destroy the self-reliant food eco-system of the Kondh. The film blurs the thin line between documentary and narrative cinema.

Gul Awaiting International Premiere
The narrative gives a glimpse of a humble household in India where Ajay, a garland maker, and his sister Mamta, a mehendi artist, struggle to make ends meet. She is getting bald patches, which makes it increasingly difficult for Ajay to find a suitable groom for her, which causes constant conflicts between the two. The film juxtaposes the cause and effect of cultural policing by the local extremist groups, amidst the daily struggles of food and shelter of the majority, leading to a haunting climax. It raises the inevitable question about who is going to draw a line to what is socially acceptable love?

Panshkuroni Konkaboti The Lonesome Lass
Awaiting World Premiere
The sojourn of life is a sheer deception. Every single moment of the expedition is pre-destined. ‘Panshkuroni Konkaboti’ murmurs the melody of a young soul, whose life was apparently blissful and candid until she stepped into the life of her elder sister in a remote village. Tiya, the protagonist, gradually starts witnessing the atrocities of life as her elder sister starts grinding her with disgraceful abuses. The tender soul inevitably turns into a victim of patriarch domination. Another pivotal character, Bula, appears to be a stark contrast of the poor soul. Bula, Tiya’s only mate, lives in a world embraced with compassion and love. Life takes its turns and Bula gets married to her love and leaves the village to start her new life. Years later she returns to the village only to witness how a vicious stroke has shattered Tiya’s existence.

Wounds of Change
Hindi, English | India 50 mins
The documentary gives a glimpse into the complex socio-political situation of India, as the nation takes on the path of development. It commences from Srinagar, Uttarakhand where a major dam is being constructed. The dam has led to the displacement of many villagers and is being considered as an environmental hazard. The villagers who have lost their lands are yet to be adequately compensated. The film illuminates their situation. The film also discusses the ‘Jansatyagrah Movement’ organised by Rajgopalchari. The movement seeks land reforms in order to provide land and livelihood resources to the marginalized communities, tribals and landless farmers. Another movement of the new Indian middle class, the ‘Anna Hazare Movement’, follows this movement.
