WELCOME TO
AFRICA
Fellow business events stakeholders, It is with great pleasure that we present you with our latest edition of the Event Planner’s Guide to Africa. Designed as a resource for both the regional and international industry, EPG is a beautiful, easy-to-read book that offers an annual overview of meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions on the continent. This year, we showcase countries that have great potential for growth in tourism, incentives and business events. We also bring you case studies from Malawi, Mauritius and Rwanda which drive home the point that Africa is open, ready and waiting to welcome you to experience something new and exciting. The continent has overcome many obstacles in getting to where we are today. Not only have we increased international routes to Africa in the last 12 months, but we have also continued to push ahead despite economic challenges, water shortages, political instability and more. With this kind of resilience and persistence, there is no doubt in my mind that Africa can make 2020 a year of great moments for business events. Here’s to 20Plenty! Yours in business, Lance Gibbons Publishing Editor

Africa continues to provide unforgettable experiences for incentive travel groups. Not only is there a plethora of options to suit any budget or taste – beach, bush and berg plus a whole lot more – but with SITE’s Southern Africa chapter rebranding to SITE Africa in October 2019, there’s so much potential for further growth.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BUREAU-LED RESEARCH
Our value proposition as an industry
The outputs and legacies to be identified and quantified in the SANCB-led studies will cover a broad spectrum, from the value of networks and business transactions arising from an event, to medical advancements like improved disease awareness, research, and treatment practices. Also to be explored are the benefits that hosting events can deliver to the host community, including profiling a particular country or city in connection with key elements of their economic or social agenda or attracting new talent to key sectors. on delegate and organiser spending to the value of what these events actually achieve for organisers, participants and host communities. As simple as it sounds, this in fact has huge implications, because it places the business-events industry at the centre of both the global economy and the underlying scientific, professional, academic, business and social advancements that drive it.

THE ICEBERG: CAPITALISING ON LEGACIES
J
oint Meetings Industry Council’s Iceberg initiative recently released a case study project report titled Business Event Legacies. This project
collected, analysed and synthesised the findings of all prior Joint Meetings Industry Council Case Studies to deliver a verdict on the broader contributions that conferences, congresses, trade shows, convention centres and bureaux deliver to destinations, communities, industries and economies. The cases were drawn from four continents: Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. The analysis indicates that the global business event industry is supporting knowledge economies, industry innovation and community well-being. Ultimately, these findings confirm a significant mismatch between the way governments measure and value the business events

UGU South Coast Tourism (USCT) is the official destination management organisation of the UGU District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa. USCT’s mandate is to grow tourism within the KZN South Coast by developing and showcasing the diverse offerings and experiences of the South Coast as tourist destination.
How is USCT enhancing the region’s tourism offerings? A major focus is opening up the hinterland to tourism through the Great Drives Out routes. The recently-launched KwaNzimakwe MultiTrails allow visitors to experience this space by foot, bike or car, benefitting tourists and the local community. Agri-tourism is also a burgeoning sector which enhances our offerings in the hinterland. We support these products through our extensive marketing and business development programmes. Why is the KZN South Coast a popular business destination? We offer award-winning accommodation and conference venues providing business visitors world-class service. For those who prefer to conclude business on the greens, there are 11 courses on the ‘Golf Coast’ as well as a variety of outdoor team-building activities. From the hinterland tours and ocean-based activities, to white water rafting and extreme swinging, there’s so much for visitors to experience. What investment opportunities does the region hold? We believe there is so much potential within the tourism sector. The development of hinterland experiences has increased the economic benefits associated with heritage tourism, greenpreneurs are establishing sustainable ecological practices, creating agri-tourism opportunities. The ease of accessibility, leisure activities, excursions and climate make this an attractive destination for a cross-section of tourism markets.

CONVENTION BUREAUX

CONVENTION BUREAUX IN AFRICA A
lthough several countries on the African continent have established convention bureaux, many of these are young. More often than
not, the equivalent facilitation and support of events is found in tourism offices. South Africa is one of the countries that has realised the importance of ensuring a dedicated team is at the forefront of the business events industry. It has several regional convention bureaux, and the National Convention Bureau (SANCB). The Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Guateng are business event hubs which offer full support for conference and exhibition organisers.
