A Happy Diwali to you all! The light winter breeze caresses the flame of the diya, ever so lightly, this Diwali season. Quite like the celebrations this year that are largely indoors and quieter unlike the flamboyance Dubai is used to. For a population waiting to dress up, socialize and let their hair down, the cruel pandemic has slackened but not really dampened the spirit of Diwali. Check out how some of the noted names from Dubai and Oman are celebrating the festival. And the A-Z of Diwali along with Goss on films, fashion and lifestyle. On the cover is the stunning Katrina Kaif who epitomizes beauty, grace, discipline, grit and gumption. Not only is she Bollywood’s female superhero of recent times, she is widely loved and lauded for her talent, beauty and fitness. Now, she has slipped easily into her next real- life role - that of a beauty entrepreneur with Kay by Katrina. Find out who she thinks are two of the best dancers of Bollywood and if she can cook? I also caught up with director Ali Abbas Zafar who is directing Katrina in his first superhero film Super Soldier. Zafar, who was in Dubai and Abu Dhabi scouting for locations, is also working on a superhero trilogy that includes Mr India 2. In this edition, we have two unusual stories concerning cricket and cinema. While ace cricketer Irfan Pathan has turned his sights to the big screen with Tamil film Cobra where he plays an intelligence officer, actor Saqib Saleem (who is a trained cricketer too) is portraying the role of legendary cricketer Mohinder Amarnath in the upcoming Kabir Khan film 83’. Both sportsmen bring the spirit of sportsmanship to their craft and to the big screen. The master Nawazuddin Siddiqui spoke to us about his role in Serious Men on Netflix and how the OTT spaces have liberated actors from the Friday headaches of box office successes. He also tells us how he caught up on his favourite cinema during the lockdown. From this edition onwards we are starting a section called Dialogue with the Diplomat and their view on cinema. Check out my interview with HE Paul Raymond Cortes, Consul General of Philippines to the UAE to read who is his favourite actor in Bollywood and why? And how he finds Bollywood endearing because it dares to defy norms set by the western world. Some amazing women enhance this edition. Designer Salma Khan who is an eminent designer much sought after by royalty and the crème de la crème of the world, tells us about the colours of 2021 and why she likes vibrant, happy hues. The elaborate photo shoot of her gowns at Bab al Shams Desert Resort look like a fairy tale of the Arabian sands. Film-maker Zenofer Fatima tells us why she likes darker characters to portray and is working on her horror web series. Dubai based influencers Jumana Khan and Aishwarya Ajit and I took a personlized Diwali shopping experience at Bloomingdale’s. Check out the Filmfare ME Youtube for more! Also check how Avnish Sharma of Mad’ouk Nights wants to transform the desi night scene in Dubai. A lot of all this and more in the Arabic section of the magazine! As we revel in the winters and embrace it, here’s wishing you all a Happy Diwali. Stay safe, stay strong!

RUMOURS AND MORE

Rumours & More RANBIR KAPOOR AND SHRADDHA KAPOOR TO START SHOOTING FOR LUV RANJAN’S NEXT Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor have been paired together for the first time in Luv Ranjan’s next. Luv Ranjan is known for films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama series and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. His next was supposed to go on floors early this year but the coronavirus pandemic came in the way. Now, we hear Ranbir and Shraddha will start shooting in November. The film will need six months to wrap up the shoot. Reports suggest that the makers are planning to wrap up the shoot by April 2021. The film is set in Spain and Shraddha reportedly plays a waitress while Ranbir plays a ladies’ man who sets out to charm her. If Luv Ranjan’s track record is anything to go by, this untitled project will surely be a love story with a difference.

SHAH RUKH KHAN HAS SIGNED TAMIL DIRECTOR ATLEE’S NEXT TITLED SANKI. AND WE KNOW WHO HE’LL BE ROMANCING IN THIS MUCH-AWAITED PROJECT. YES, IT’S NONE OTHER THAN DEEPIKA PADUKONE. DEEPIKA REPRTEDLY HAS LOVED THE STORY AND IS ON BOARD. THE FILM WILL BE DEEPIKA’S FOURTH VENTURE WITH SRK AFTER OM SHANTI OM, CHENNAI EXPRESS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

SALMAN KHAN’S TIGER 3 TO BE SHOT ACROSS SEVEN COUNTRIES

According to reports, Salman Khan and Aditya Chopra have big plans for Tiger 3. Salman Khan is free to shoot in February and hence Aditya Chopra and director Maneesh Sharma are hurrying to get the script ready. According to reports, the film will be shot in seven countries and will be a visual delight. A source revealed the details, “If everything goes as planned, Maneesh Sharma and his team will conduct a recce across the UAE, Istanbul and the US in December. The rest of the countries have yet to be pencilled in. Tiger 3 is close to Adi’s heart as he has developed the screenplay along with Jaideep Sahni. Despite the industry slowdown, Adi is certain that the film has the makings of a blockbuster. Maneesh and he want to take it on floors by February.” Katrina Kaif will keep pace with Salman again in the film. The makers are now on the lookout for a fresh face to play the negative lead.

KATRINA KAIF’S SUPERHERO FLICK IN TROUBLE Katrina Kaif has too many big projects in her kitty and she’s raring to hit the road soon. Her Sooryavanshi with Akshay Kumar was ready for release but got stalled due to the lockdown. She also has Phone Bhoot with Ishaan Khattar and Siddhant Chaturvedi and Tiger 3 with Salman Khan. According to reports, Katrina’s most ambitious project, where she’s reportedly playing a superhero, or shall we say, a superheroine, which is backed by Ali Abbas Zafar might be delayed. The filmmaker has not been able to get any producer or studio on board to finance it. Since it’s a superhero flick, the film will be high on VFX and hence expensive. Looking at the current scenario, film studios are not ready to invest in a high-budget film. Ali Abbas Zafar and Katrina have worked together in films like Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Tiger Zinda Hai and Bharat. Katrina Kaif incidentally has been prepping for the role for a while now. She wants to get the right physique for the film. We’re sure she’ll look marvellous as a superhero.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Binodini Dasi biopic gets delayed due to COVID-19

Do you know Akshay Kumar drinks cow urine every day?

Dr. Bushra Nosherwani

Talks had surfaced early this year about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan having signed Pradeep Sarkar’s next. It’s a biopic on Binodini Dasi, a popular courtesan from the 1800s who became popular as a theatre actor. But now we hear that the project has been pushed to next year due to the pandemic. Talking about the delay, Pradeep Sarkar said that he’d narrated the script to Aishwarya and she’d given him the heads up but soon after the lockdown started. So he hasn’t been able to work further on the project. He also revealed that even though Aishwarya is on board, he has not been able to sign on other actors for the film. He’s hoping that things will go back to normal by March 2021, so he can go back on sets. He said, “The writing is in progress. While Aishwarya has given her nod, I have not approached other actors because I am waiting for the crisis to abate. I hope the vaccine is developed by March so that we can start shooting.” Pradeep Sarkar is also working on two other scripts but will only start narrations when he can meet the actors in person.

RANVEER SINGH WANTS SIGN LANGUAGE TO Ranveer Singh likes to involve himself in various charities and causes. The actor has been doing his bit for people with speech and hearing disabilities. He has been supporting an initiative to make the sign language India’s 23rd official language. Thanking him for standing up for them, 25 members of the deaf community from across India said, “We were very happy to hear the good news about Ranveer Singh, who is a famous Bollywood actor, to support Indan Sign Language to be recognized as the 23rd official language of India. This progressive step will create a ripple effect in providing equal access across all areas from education to employment to entertainment to more than 10 million deaf people in India.” Kudos to you Ranveer!

The Magic of Lumineers A cost-effective way to correct discolored teeth Like every other domain of medical science, developments and procedures in dentistry have been proliferating with unprecedented results and efficiency. When, it is contemplated that a given thing is turning out to be the best, that is when a latest discovery emerges, making people realize there is still room for improvement. In the same way, woes related to problems of discolored and unusually shaped teeth are being addressed with better treatments like lumineers, a brand of porcelain veneers. WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LUMINEERS AND VENEERS? Lumineers is a variant of veneers requiring less preparation and advanced dental work than them. One might get to hear doctors call them no-prep veneers since they are made of ultra-thin laminate instead of porcelain ARE LUMINEERS AS EFFECTIVE AS VENEERS AT HIDING DISCOLORED TEETH? Dentist resort to lumineers in case of mildly discolored teeth due to them being translucent and thinner than porcelain veneers. So, veneers should be the first thing coming to mind of patients having severely discolored teeth. DOES A PATIENT HAVE TO GO THROUGH TEETH GRINDING BEFORE LUMINEER APPLICATION? Teeth do not require being ground to be thinner in order for Lumineers to be applied. A customized set of lumineers made for specific treatment needs are used by dentists for their patients. HOW EXPENSIVE ARE LUMINEERS AS COMPARED TO VENEERS? Cost per tooth for lumineers is less than that of veneers, making them a better option for those whose teeth are less severely discolored and unusually shaped.

COVER STORY

You have been the representation of fitness and beauty. Were you always inclined towards this space? es, always. I grew up in a family of six girls. Needless to say, I was always surrounded by make-up. So, I learnt to play around and experiment with it from a young age. I have always believed that a healthy body results in a happy and positive mind. Taking care of your inner well-being and mental health is extremely important, things like mindfulness, meditation just a few minutes a day can really help. I also like challenging myself by mixing my workout plans. Working out is not all about being thin. It is about improving your stamina and strength. I really do love working out. Without it, I am not the best version of myself.

Y

How many hours do you dedicate to fitness daily? I believe that it is not necessary to workout everyday but I try to stick to my six-day routine. I generally work out for at least 45 minutes a day. Strength training in the gym, Pilates and yoga are a part of my workout regime. While strength training helps me work on my core, Pilates and yoga help me focus and stay calm. Free-hand exercises like lunges and squats are great and can be executed in 20 minutes. What was your most challenging role when it came to fitness? There are two films that required me to work very hard on my physique – Tiger Zinda Hai and Dhoom 3. While Tiger Zinda Hai required me to pull off some high-octane stunts, Dhoom 3 was all about executing some difficult dance moves.

29/10/2020 3:31 PM

I have been doing an intensive high mix of squats, lunges, push-ups and Pilates along with strength training at the gym with my trainer and friend, Yasmin Karachiwala for Tiger Zinda Hai. For Super Soldier, I did some rigorous workout sessions for about 10-hours a day to work on my flexibility and core strength. Apart from my regular exercises, I spent a lot of time in acrobat training. What is your diet like these days? Do you cook? It is important to watch what you eat. Contrary to the popular notion, I include ample carbs in my diet. I try to stay away from gluten, refined sugar and dairy products. Even now that I am at home, I am making sure that I do not binge on junk and fried food. I have a clean diet. I have begun a little bit of cooking during this lockdown. I have tried my hands at making pancakes, omelets and salad. I am slowly getting there but I know that I can be a good cook someday (laughs). Do you think beauty is skin deep? Why or why not? I have always maintained that beauty-products are meant to enhance your personality rather than beautifying you. We are all beautiful and unique in our own ways and we need to celebrate that. The world has defined beauty as something which I think is all about vanity. I believe that we are the most beautiful when we are happy. What is your skin care regime during the day and during the night? During the day, I apply a basic moisturizer. It helps my skin stay hydrated. The secret to a good skin is drinking lots of water. I have also begun my version of an ice bucket challenge where I dunk my face in a big bowl full of icecold water before applying make-up. At night, I massage my face with coconut oil before washing thoroughly. Why did you choose beauty as a business? Right since my days as a model, I have been fascinated with make-up. All of my make-up artists will tell you about how I keep asking them questions about cosmetics and beauty products. That has been and that continues to be the basis of why I’m always intrigued to try out new products. Make-up has been an innate part of my journey- from runway to the big screen, and finally I rendered my love for it to launch Kay Beauty, my first ever Beauty Brand! I could imagine no better beauty partner in India than Nykaa to launch this brand. Not only do they have a deep understanding of their consumers, but also this amazing reach which will allow Kay Beauty to be available to everyone across India. I always wanted to create something I strongly feel about, something where I can be involved with right since its nascent stage. I see so many women suffering from low self-esteem, thinking that they aren’t beautiful. I wanted to let them know that makeup should be fun! I wanted to own a beauty label through which I could give out the message that we should learn to celebrate ourselves. Tell us about the making of Kay? It was years ago after a meeting with Nykaa - Falguni (Nayar) and Reena (Chhabra), when we decided to work together on our beauty brand, Kay Beauty, and finally it went live in 2019. It has helped me fulfil my dream to own something I can call my own! Kay Beauty is a true representative of who I am - I wanted to create a beauty brand that said what I think about make-up and what do I expect from my make-up. I also asked myself a very demanding question - how can we get more out of make-up? That is what I wanted Kay Beauty to be – a bridge between high glamour and care, so all of us can be glamorous without any guilt. Kay Beauty stands for #MakeUpThatKares, as each high-performance product

is enriched with skin loving ingredients that have been hand-picked to care for your skin. It was also very important for me that the collection was versatile enough to cater to different skin tones, ages and emotions. With the range of shades and buildable formulas every woman can find their look, whether it’s quick glam or ultra-luxe! I am very thrilled as our brand completes a year this month since its inception. You can expect some exciting colour cosmetics and face products in the coming two months! We will be touching approx. 200 SKUs at the end of 2020 and in the coming years Kay Beauty will grow into a fullfledged makeup brand catering to all beauty needs. Under #KARE initiatives, we will be extending a helping hand and empower women from different walks of life. We will continue to support causes close to our hearts and help build a better tomorrow. What is your input in adding your experience to the brand? I have been working on Kay Beauty closely with the Nykaa team, every step of the way. I have been involved in all the aspects such as packaging, the ingredients in the products, the shades, the formulations, marketing and even how we wanted the first campaign picture to look. It gives me immense pleasure to be a part of the brand which I can call my own. I also wanted to make sure that we take our time before November 2020 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 19

launching the products rather than flooding the market by unveiling them all at once. I wanted and still want everyone to give enough time to understand the products. I have taken all the knowledge I’ve gained in the course of my career and put it into these beauty products! Our brand launch video campaign ‘It’s Kay To Be You’ came up after some brainstorming on mine and Zoya’s (Akhtar) part, which is a message to all the women out there that it is completely fine to accept your imperfections, hence #ITSKAYTOBEYOU. What is your favourite make up hack? I love eye liners! After I apply them, I smudge them around the corners of my eyes because it renders a softer and natural look to them. That is why we’ve added the Smokey Kajal in the Kay Beauty kajal range, as it is super quick and effective for a smokey eye in less than a minute! I suggest all women try that out because a good eye make-up has the power to transform you. Apart from that, I like blending my foundation with my fingertips for a natural finish, I can vouch for it that it works like magic! 5 beauty products that must be in your bag? An eye-liner, mascara, foundation, a perfect shade of a lipstick or lip gloss and my moisturizer. I love putting on mascara (you must try out my Kay Beauty length and volume mascara because it is sensational!) because it helps enhance my eyes and I have always maintained that a good liner and lip shade are everything that you need to feel confident. A moisturizer with SPF is a must for me because my skin tends to turn red due to the hot and humid climate here. Do you see beauty overshadow talent in an actor sometimes? No, never! It is your talent and soul that makes you 20 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST November 2020

beautiful. If you are hardworking and passionate about what you do you are in it for the long haul. Many believe that showbiz is a vanity business and it is your looks that determine your longevity in the industry. But I do not subscribe to that notion. If you want to be a successful actor, you need to be talented, hard-working and have a positive personality. Confidence in the self is important and confidence is beautiful. Name the actresses you find beautiful? I honestly find everyone has their own unique beauty which is exactly what our campaign has also been about - every woman is unique and beautiful and in their own way. Name three Bollywood dancers you absolutely adore? Madhuri Dixit Nene is my ultimate inspiration when it comes to dancing. Then there is Hrithik Roshan who is so effortless. You have to be really good to match up to his energy. How did you spend time during the lockdown? How did it enhance your creativity? I kept myself busy by doing a lot of introspection, reading, meditation, my workout, and doing the household chores. I was also very busy working on the upcoming product launches for Kay. Every day we have worked on that front. Apart from that, I had also been reading scripts and narration. The lockdown made us all introspect on how blessed our lives are and how much we take things for granted. It also helped me polish my cooking and kitchen skills (laughs). I respect everyone who does this on a regular basis. I also worked very hard with the team on Kay Beauty throughout the lockdown, where we came up with some exciting properties on the @Kabalarian Instagram page and continued to tirelessly work on the launches that you will be seeing in the coming months! Where are you likely to head out once the lockdown ends? There were days when I really missed being on a shoot. So, I am really looking forward to being back on the sets soon.

Tell us about your memories of the UAE When you came here for the first time? I think the first time was for a film shoot. I have shot a lot in the UAE for my films. I always have the most wonderful time - it’s one of my favourite places to shoot. November 2020 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 21

What’s your take on designer masks and how fashion is evolving with the pandemic?

I think it’s necessary to contribute and also make money for yourself. As a designer, it is your job to cater to people’s needs. If there is something a person is looking for, it is our job to provide them with it. I think it’s great that everyone is coming up with their own version of masks. They are anyway a necessity and now people can have fun with them.

Where do you see the fashion industry heading once the pandemic is over? This is the time for everyone to reflect on how much wastage happens when we create a collection. It’s time to rethink and evolve in terms of benefiting the environment. All the different industries have abused nature. But as part of the fashion industry, I’m looking into how much I can contribute to enviroment. You have to also look

into sustainability. Sustainable fashion is something everyone needs to think about. As for changes, things are going digital. Internationally, fashion weeks have already gone digital. A lot of designers have decided to cut down on their collection. Instead of having six collections a year, they are looking to making seasonless collections. It stops mass production and wastage.

Who are your all-time favourite fashion icons? I’ll name a few. Audrey Hepburn and Lady Diana for sure. Maharani Gayatri Devi, she was the face of Cartier, and Karisma Kapoor. I’m a big fan and her personal style is chic and eclectic.

Who according to you pulls off your designs the best?

I love making people look beautiful. So every single person I have ever dressed up has been a pleasure to work

with. But having said that, right from the time I started my brand, Sonam (Kapoor) has been very supportive. When I launched my first campaign, she modelled for it. She had also started her career around the same time. So my first collection was created with her as my muse. It will be eternally special to me

Who are some of your favourite designers?

Internationally, I love Christian Dior, Valentino, Versace.... I really like Alexander Wang. But these are more my personal style than inspirations. Amongst Indian designers, I love Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. I also love Anuradha Vakil’s work, Anamika Khanna, Rohit Bal for his classic couture and Manish Malhotra. He was actually my first boss and knows how to make a woman look so beautiful and sensual at the same time.

You are born and raised in Dubai. What was your first exposure to fashion and the international market? I took part in the Bridal Fashion Show in Paris about 17,18 years ago and since then there has been no looking back. You started out two decades ago. Tell us about the initial years and the major highlights as you look back 20 years? Yes. It has been over two decades in this space. My major highlights have been the London Fashion Week, the Paris Fashion Show and the Oman Fashion show where I was invited by the royalty. You have designed for royalty. Can you share individual fashion statements preferred by them and how do you personalize each piece? They like simple and elegant designs. Their tastes are such. How has the pandemic affected the world of fashion? How do you see

After the pandemic we all want to see happy colours. Any colour that brings smiles on people inspires me. The spirit of smiles and happiness will be used in my future collection since this is what the world needs after this year! the future of fashion? I see the future work as being majorly online and I think that is the best future. Also, no fashion shows will be happening. We should concentrate on being online more. What are your fashion predictions for 2021? What are the colours you would like to see? After the pandemic we all want to see happy colours. Any colour that brings smiles on people inspires me. The spirit of smiles and happiness will be used in my future collection since this is what the world needs after this year! What keeps you going creatively when you hit a road block? I take long walks while listening to classical music to clear my head and rethink my ideas. What are the accessories that you will incorporate in 2021? This year has introduced face masks to the world. The accessory that I will include in 2021 will be trendy, modern and affordable face masks, that can be used for all occasions. Stay safe and secure, while looking beautiful. What is that one fabric that works on women of all body types? Do you have a favourite? Chiffon is my favourite fabric along with pure silk. Define the Salma Khan woman in TWO words? Elegant and chic. n November 2020 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 39

She’s a film-maker, actor, producer, doting mom and daughter and balances each of her roles with great skill, ease and grace. Manju Ramanan chats up with the feisty Zenofer Fatima who has completed filming her short film Specter and is planning her next horror web-series

Did you always aspire to be an actor? You hosted food shows in the past. Tell us about your association with the performing arts? wouldn’t say it was an aspiration, it was something that I just thought of getting into after entering the film industry after dabbling in journalism in my early years. So, when I developed an interest towards filmmaking, I discovered acting was not a bad option to try out, and when I did try my hand at acting , I felt like I had it in me and I had also enjoyed it, and so did my audiences. Nevertheless I would still say I am more of a film-maker, because I love being behind the camera.

I

You shot and featured in a few documentary films. Which topics interest you? I guess I’m more invested into genres like mystery, horror and psychological thrillers that are always keeping the audience on the edge of the seat. I am an advocate of social awareness and documentary type films, but I am now slowly venturing into the fictional side of filmmaking, while still ensuring that they promote some sort of social message at the same time. I think no matter what genre or fictional nonfictional film you create, it should always keep the audience intrigued throughout. I like to keep the audience in the know, yet somehow clueless but not confused - in the way that the ending makes them realize something that they did not realize before.

Tell us about Specter and your role in it? Is it entirely shot in the UAE? Yes, Specter is my first feature film (50-60 min) venture that is entirely shot in the UAE. It’s about a troubled celeb-played by myself - who is in the midst of fighting her own demons. Whether those demons are inside her or are indeed real, is up to the audience to figure out. The film, like I stated before has a social message attached to it, in the sense that what the protagonist faces can easily be faced by any other person. It’s primarily a fast-paced thriller that will keep audiences engaged till the end. It’s quite an enigma and a puzzle on its own, and it counts on the audiences to put the pieces together to understand or realize what’s actually going on. There’s a slight chance that even by the end, the audience may need to rewatch the film to piece together the clues. What about the Ouija series you are planning? You have acted in and produced the series too? How do you manage both roles? The Ouija Series is a series of short films in the form of episodes that will focus on real life paranormal experiences that people have faced in their lives. The series will be released on an exclusive OTT platform. I will not be acting in all episodes, but I will be taking on the roles that I feel will suit my persona. Any local talent you are working with? There are a lot of local talents that we have worked with in the Ouija Series. Some of them are Tik Tokers who actually use Tik Tok as a platform to display their acting chops. So we are always on the lookout for new talent whether it be Tik Tokers or other local talents in the UAE. For Specter, we will be having some promising names on board as well, which will be announced in due course. Any spooky incident you can narrate that you experienced during the shoot? We were doing Ouija series and were using the Ouija board to simulate a sort of séance, we did hear some spooky sounds that didn’t seem very earthly. We have also done some vlogs near RAK wherein after the shoot we had experienced some weird happenings - one of them was our tyre being punctured even though it was a completely new tyre! You are attracted to negative roles because there is more range of acting? What about romances? Well, I believe negative and positive roles have their own merits. But in my honest opinion, negative roles are always more challenging- and I like the challenge. This is because the expressions and acting that you need to be displaying on camera features a range of emotions that you need to be able to balance out-and the real beauty of it is making people love and sympathize with your character despite that person being evil or malicious. As for romances, I believe as an actor you should be able to dabble in multiple genres-even romance. So while I am sure I can do it, I guess I choose not to as my interests do not lie in that genre. You featured in a Mumbai Indians video. Tell us about that experience? It was definitely super exciting and a different experiencebecause this time the project was by a different production company and not my own company- so they were directing me as to what to do. So this was very different from what I am used to. I am always open to working with new production houses that house a lot of talent, it’s good to have diversity and work with people that think differently than you do, because that is how you grow. Every production house works differently and it’s fun to explore that. How do you balance family and work, and how involved are your kids in your work? I first take care of my family, before anything. When I am in

shoots, I always make sure that my family and kids are completely taken care of. As for how involved my kids are in my work, my elder daughter gives a lot of advice. Like if I come up with a story, she will polish it. So I take her advice and she has also codirected some of my films like my recent COVID-19 projects like Tomorrow Never Came and The Wave . This is very helpful whilst I am acting as she checks if my expressions were appropriate for the scene or not. My little son also helps out and gives me plenty of suggestions, so I do take a lot of their constructive advice-because filmmaking is a very creative profession and I always encourage the youth to get into it because they are innovative and creative. What is your average day like? I am an early bird. After my fajr prayers I do look into what is the work for today, and set my schedule for the day for myself and also my team. Deadlines are very important-we sometimes work throughout the nights while other times we work for a half day. I have no restrictions or anything for my team- it’s more about whether the job is done or not-we are very result-oriented. How do you keep fit? Any beauty hack you want to share? I do have a diet that I follow-but I also make sure that I get a cheat day twice a week. I have a personal trainer that I work with 2 days a week. I drink a lot of energy juices like green juice or carrot juices and these are always good for cleansing the body. As for hacks, I use a honey mask to keep my skin soft and supple. I am also a huge fan of supplements like evening primrose oil capsules which help decrease dark spots and promote and overall glowy appearance. November 2020 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 41

INTERVIEW

THE

After winning hearts in the world of cinema, the super talented Nawazuddin Siddiqui is all over the OTT space and we are loving it. A treat to watch every time he fixes his soulful gaze at a character, does a monologue or speaks to the audience, the boastful Ganesh

Gaitonde of Sacred Games, the crafty Aiyyan Mani of Serious Men (Netflix) to the gentle Ghoomketu (Zee5) is formidable talent. Manju Ramanan speaks to the man who has effortlessly pulled off a Manjhi, Manto,

Thackeray and a Housefull 4.

You always wanted to work with Sudhir Mishra? es, I did. I waited for 20 years and have finally worked with him in Serious Men that streams on Netflix. It was my dream to work with him. Though I never met him, from his films, I had an idea about the personality. In the year 2000, someone had arranged for me to meet him but could do so. When I received the script of Serious Men written by Manu Joseph and knew that he was directing it, there was no thinking. I said yes immediately. I realised that he is unbiased in the way he looks at the world and has a unique sensibility and sensitivity. He told me that he had started noticing me from Black Friday and then Gangs of Wasseypur.

Y

How did you manage to speak Tamil in Serious Men? Manu Joseph was always on set correcting my language and teaching me the right pronunciations. Tamil is a tongue twister and a very difficult language. It is pure, traditional and authentic and is very ancient. You have addressed the issue of generation gap and expectations in the film? Yes, Aiyyan Mani calls them 2G, 3G and 4G for the last, current and the next generation. Every parent wants to give the child more than what he received in life. He or she tailors the child’s upbringing in such a way that the child is prepared for the future. And many of them force children to work beyond their capacities. It happens everywhere. Aiyyan represents the hordes of people who aren’t at the top of their game but manipulate their bosses to suit their interests. They operate from behind the throne. As an actor, it was challenging to switch between being innocent and being street smart – that is the character of Aiyyan. Thanks to Sudhir Mishra, he, very lovingly let me explore this role.

What about your future films? Ghoomketu that released on Zee 5 was an old film. It was shot 5-6 years ago but released late. We have shot for Jogira for two days and there is Bole Choodiyan which is commercial film.

I am enjoying cinema right now. Theatre se abhi dar lagta hai!

Your memories with the late Irrfan, who we lost this year? I know Irrfan bhai from the year 2000 and he recommended me in many How many films did you consume films including Slumdog Millionaire. I couldn’t make during the lockdown? Oh yes! I have been bingeing it for that film and I didn’t know it would become so on films. I have watched big. He directed me in a star close to 150-200 films best seller and then we did of my favourite actors Anthony Hopkins, Matthew Bypass. He was my mentor and longtime associate. And McConoughey, Tony Lang, then we did Lunchbox. He Kevin Spacey etc. Also, was phenomenal in it! during the lockdown, I had the opportunity to speak And the most asked questions? to myself and reflect on That I succeeded even my thoughts. Also, film if I was unconventional narrations are happening looking. To them I always now. say, 98 percent of India Would you return to theatre some looks like me. So, who is unconventional? day? n

How did you bond with the child actor Akshat, who plays your son? Akshat Das is a professional actor. I have worked with many kids in my career and he is unusual. He comes well prepared on set and if his shot in not okayed by the 3rd retake he feels uneasy. In the entire duration of the shoot, he didn’t behave like a child. Whatever dialogues were given to him, he was always up to the mark. His parents have raised him so well – he is amazing, be it his etiquettes, personal or professional life. Also, he is very bright and obedient and extremely organized. Do you see the era of superstars change with OTT? If the superstar film is content driven, people will watch it. Or else, people have options in the OTT space. Often small budget films are ignored by theatre owners because nearly all

big screens are booked by superstar films. OTT has liberated them and given them an equal opportunity to showcase their work. I used to go to international film festivals and I have seen people make fun of our cinema. I mean the typical ones. I was told that they are made because the audience likes only that kind of cinema. I believe that it is the audience’s fault. They should demand better work. But you have managed to straddle all kinds of cinema? Yes, I have. I do commercial films because then, my films like Manto are watched. Will we see you turn film maker in the future? I cannot direct films but I can produce films for sure. I am thinking about it. Maybe in the future. November 2020 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 43

Celebrating Diwali 2020!

It is the most vibrant of Indian festivals and this year, though celebrations are low-key, the Indian diaspora’s spirit of celebrations can’t be held back easily. Here’s what the industry’s big-wigs have planned for the season, with all safety precautions in place!

This year for Diwali while the celebrations will be low-key, we are very grateful that we have our daughter, my mother-in-law and brother-in-law here in Dubai with us. Usually, we have the three of them on video call during our family puja time. We plan to do the usual diya and desi dressing on the day and welcome friends who may drop in. Even though times are testing to say the least, I am filled with gratitude for being able to spend more time with my family than usual and getting the ability to spend Diwali together as a family after almost five years️.

iwali is one of the most popular celebrations for the Indian diaspora in Dubai. We celebrate Diwali in our house with great fervor and enthusiasm. Typically the day starts with puja , followed by exchanging greetings with friends and relatives. In the evening, the whole house is decorated with traditional Indian oil lamps (diya) and the twinkling lights. We invite close friends for dinner at home which typically gets over by 10 pm. We burst fire-crackers together. At the end we as a family go for a drive to various places in Dubai such as Bur Dubai to see the firing of crackers. We are blessed to be in a country where we get a chance to celebrate all Indian festivals including Diwali in the same manner we do in India.

iwali is the festival of light, colors, and love. It is usually celebrated amidst a lot of enthusiasm with social meetings and entertaining events. But this year the COVID pandemic has curtailed many group activities. Adhering to social distancing and personal hygiene norms we will have to celebrate the coming Diwali inside our house. There will be no house visits, parties, and hand-tohand gifts exchanges. People will prefer purchasing gifts online and send them to their near and dear ones through courier agencies. As far as I am concerned, I will celebrate it with my family on a positive note. We would like to gift something useful to the weaker section of society to light up their lives.

his time our Diwali celebrations will be what we do once in a lifetime. It will be an e-Diwali festival time with family and friends – completely online. Like every year, we shall light the home with lights and diyas only and without guests unlike all the previous year’s festivities. iwali is the five-day festival of lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. Diwali, which for some also coincides with harvest and New Year celebrations, is a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness. The first day of Diwali festival Dhanteras falls on 13th day of 2nd half of lunar month. Dhanteras is considered as one of the most auspicious day by Hindus for buying silver, gold and vehicle. And each year we celebrate this day by buying sort of gold / silver objects. The second day of Diwali is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi or Kali Chaudas. During this day we get up before the sun rise take holy bath and then new clothes are worn followed by breakfast with relatives and friends. Also, on this day we perform Puja for all our machines situated in our factory. The third day of Diwali is known as Lakshmi Puja, the most important day among the five days of festival. Lakshmi Puja is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune, prosperity and the embodiment of beauty. On this day all our office staff are welcomed to our office along with their whole family. There is a Lakshmi Puja where in offerings are offered to Goddess Lakshmi and many other deities. During this puja, offerings are also offered to new books of accounts and they are worshiped for bringing in prosperity.

Diwali has always been my favourite festival as it’s all about colors, lights and sweets. This Diwali will be different as we must follow the protocols and ensure safety standards are maintained. I plan on sending my loved ones personalized video messages telling them how I feel about them and what they mean to me as opposed to forwarding a message. I have learnt how to cook so definitely I will be preparing a nice spread to have with my close ones. My outfit is very important and I will wear a kurta with chikankari work as I have been meaning to wear a Lucknow kurta. My family is far but video call will surely come handy and we will do our family puja online this time. November 2020 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 49

iwali is a festival of lights and we are fortunate to celebrate Diwali in the same way we would do it back home. The preparations start 10 days before the actual Diwali day. We make sweets, decorate the house, buy new clothes and most important, clean the temple. Being in Dubai for 20 years, we have a lot of friends and family here. The trend is that they all visit our house, we do puja, burst some light crackers like phooljhadi, eat, play, play cards and thank God for everything. 50 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST November 2020

n these Covid-19 times, the word, ‘safe’, doesn’t only imply to crackers but also suggests protecting oneself from catching the virus. Even though many of us are skeptical about going all out and immersing in the Diwali celebration with others because of COVID-19, there will still be some people, who wouldn’t care less to come together and burn a few crackers. Even though stepping out to celebrate the festival with your neighbours is tempting, staying indoors makes up for a wise decision. We plan to have equal

fun staying indoors and celebrate the festival with family – make Rangoli together, plan out an extensive Diwali dinner menu, and involve a list of interesting activities and games, which we can play within the family. Memorable conversations, great food and games can never dampen our festive spirit. We will make Diwali for kids interesting and engaging with fun Diwali activities such as diya decoration, ladoo making, play dough Rangoli making and so on. We will involve our kids and let them offer us a hand while Riddhima, my wife, dishes out some delicious Diwali

delicacies. Soaking in the spirit of the new normal, we will catch up with our long-distance friends and send them our gratitude and let them know that we are thinking about them. We do not believe in exchanging greetings on WhatsApp or any social media platform. We like to call up people and wish them. We will call up our elders on Diwali to seek their blessings. For us, the festival is a signal to bring light to the lives of those around us, and our country of residence. We believe this to be the most auspicious time for us and our family to raise funds for Sivana Foundation aimed at supporting the education of underprivileged girl students across India. The New Us! HE’S FROM LONDON AND BRINGS A BRAND NEW CONCEPT TO DUBAI THAT AIMS TO ADD PANACHE, CLASS AND SOPHISTICATION TO THE DESI PARTY SCENE HERE. AVNISH SHARMA WHO OWNS AND CURATES MAD’OUK NIGHTS AT AT.MOSPHERE BURJ KHALIFA, SPEAKS TO FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST ABOUT HIS PLANS FOR THIS YEAR AND 2021! Tell us about your expansion to the UAE? Well, I am still very new to Dubai. I visited Dubai for a business meeting in 2017 November and later in 2018, decided to give it a try and start something in this city. I belong to the F&B industry since the last 9 years but here I started my Holiday Homes company. Why did you choose UAE as a destination of choice for your business and why Burj Khalifa? We chose Burj Khalifa because Mad’ouk’s first policy is not to work on any venue where desi themes have already happened. Secondly, what is better than

partying at the top? What is the idea behind Mad’ouk Nights and what all have you planned for the future? Well, the meaning of Mad’ouk is pain from experiences. A few years ago, we celebrated occasions because we had reasons to celebrate them. Say, happy occasions like birthdays or promotions or anniversaries. But today, celebrations are a weekend ritual. So, I wanted to give it a name which has some

meaning to the company. Our concept is clear. If people see it is Mad’ouk, they automatically know that once in a week, it will take place at a memorable venue. We are not looking to cater each day of week but yeah we are surely coming up with some decent venues. I promise you guys, you simply can’t guess! How did you start Mad’ouk nights? During my visit to London in February 2020, my friends pushed me to start an event company. In fact, it was meant as a joke but it made me curious to

see if it could work out. So, I decided to launch Mad’ouk but then I had a fight in deciding the venue. Somehow I got lucky to get sky 2.0 for my launch and that night is still in my memory cloud. I will be honest. The day I started, I had no idea of executing my launch. I started out with no data of leads or numbers, no desi friends in Dubai, no promoters. In fact I had no idea how will I make

it happen? But I believe in the law of attraction and so I always give credit to the universe to make it happen. How has the response been so far in terms of local and international guests you have hosted? Our very first event was on 3rd March 2020 in sky 2.0 and the amount of reservations we had and the response we received, was just unprecedented for me personally. Although COVID hit our launch, we still managed to pull it off in a very elegant way. After the launch, we chose At.mosphere for the second event but unfortunately the world went into a lockdown. Later, when we got a chance to come back, we still kept the same venue. It has been 16 weeks and none of our nights have gone empty. Yes, and this response after COVID, is a hit response for us.

people come with their groups and there is no more stags policy. We can cater to them easily because it is practical for the venue or event company. But 2021 is surely bringing many new changes or as we say it is the new us!

Dubai has epitomised the new normal, how do you see the hospitality industry in 2021? Well, very honestly we all know that nothing is the same anymore and so is nightlife. But I do have a strong intuition on seeing a new trend in nightlife or the F&B industry. We all know social distancing is one factor which cannot be accepted very easily in hospitality because it is not just hard it also makes the vibe very sad and low. The new change I notice now is,

Any further expansions to your business in Dubai? My plans are very simple. We plan to launch Mad’ouk in London in February next year. We plan to add a few more venues in Dubai but we are only looking for Thursdays and Fridays. We have many innovative ideas to add to our nights, but unfortunately the pandemic happened. But I am not disappointed because I got enough time to execute what I want to serve, and it will work out. November 2020 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 53

I INTERVIEW

rfan Pathan to grace the silver screen!

Cricket and cinema have been closely linked to each other and the crossover has happened a few times too. We’ve had cricketers play film roles (refer the list in the story) other than appearing as themselves. The latest to join the band wagon is pacer Irfan Pathan. Pathan debuts as an Interpol officer in director Ajay Gnanamuthu’s third Tamil movie Cobra. The film will be a Pan-India project catering to the Tamil, Hindi and Telugu audience. and produced in association with Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. Manju Ramanan speaks to Irfan on how he managed the tongue twister Tamil and if he applied the sportsman spirit to cinema.

How did you manage a role in Tamil? have been offered roles in Hindi and Telugu. I refused a role in Hindi because it was of a reformed drug addict. I have a sense of responsibility towards who I will play onscreen. I accepted Cobra because my role is that of an Interpol chief and I am a huge fan of superstar Cheeyan Vikram who is the main lead in the film. He is a very humble guy and was very welcoming. Also, the casting is amazing. Another major reason of accepting the project is to work with A.R. Rahman. I have an affinity with Chennai. When I was 15 years old, I lived in Chennai for three months and I took to the language. I can’t speak Tamil fluently but I can manage a few words. The challenge however wasn’t just the language, I had to emote in it too. So first, I understood the script in translation, then spoke the words with the emotion required. If it was Hindi or Urdu zubaan, it would have been easier. But the director Ajay (who has directed the successful Demonte Colony and Imaikka Nodigal) has been very supportive and patient. He is a man with a lot of sabr (laughs). He is a very hard-working guy and slept for barely 2 hours daily after an 18-hour shift.

I

How excited are you about the upcoming film 83’? I was born a year after 1983 just like Ranveer Singh, who plays Kapil paaji (Kapil Dev) in the film. The euphoria of that world cup is second to none. Whenever I have met my seniors, we have only heard fantastic stories of that match when India won the 1983 World Cup. Through their experiences, the events are etched in my memory though I have only seen footage of the matches played. It was a magical time that made us proud that we could win a world cup and that we had become world champions. I have had the opportunity to hear the stories from Sunny sir (Sunil Gavaskar) and Kapil paaji. That was also the time when members of the family including women watched and enjoyed cricket and got engrossed and involved in the game. When you entered the film set, how do you bring the jazba of sport into film? Well, it is a very different world. Cricketers are very punctual and I told the director that I would be on time. 62 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST November 2020

Cricketers who have acted in films Kapil Dev Kapil Dev has made special appearances in films including Gaurav Pandey’s Stumped and David Dhawan’s Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. But his most prominent cameo was in Nagesh Kukunoor’s Iqbal, starring Shreyas Talpade. “The Indian team needs bowlers like you,” Kapil Dev tells an awe-struck Iqbal in the film’s climax.

Sachin Tendulkar The Master Blaster of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar was prominently featured in his biographical documentary Sachin: A Billion Dreams, directed by James Erskine.

Vinod Kambli The former batsman tried his acting bat in Ravi Dewan’s Annarth, alongside Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty. The cricketer played Bandya, a criminal. He also featured in Pal Pal Dil Ke Ssaat..

Anil Kumble The ace bowler played himself in Meerabai Not Out, starring Mandira Bedi, Mahesh Manjrekar and Anupam Kher. The cricketer plays a hiccup-riddled version of himself in the film, in a special appearance.

Ajay Jadeja The former Indian batsman tried putting on his acting face for Yusuf Khan’s 2003 Hindi film Khel-No Ordinary Game, in an important supporting role alongside Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty and Celina Jaitly. Jadeja has also starred in the Bollywood film Pal Pal Dil Ke Ssaat, with Mahie Gill

Yuvraj Singh The former Indian all-rounder made an endearing cameo in the 1992 Punjabi film Mehndi Shagna Di. A young Yuvraj is seen sporting a school uniform in the film.

Harbhajan Singh The ace spinner was roped in to play a significant role in Karthik Yogi’s Dikkilona, which stars Santhanam in the lead.

Salil Ankola After retiring from Indian cricket, Salil starred in a crop of Hindi films, including Churaliya Hai Tumne. The sportsman began his acting career with the role of a police inspector in the 2000 film Kurukshetra, starring Sanjay Dutt.

These international cricketers, too, worked in Indian films West Indies player Dwayne Bravo might be known for his ace bowling skills. But the sportsman got to depict another side of him in Tamil film Chithiram Pesudhadi 2, in which he set the dance floor on fire. Pakistani cricketer Mohsin Khan made his Indian film debut with JP Dutta’s Batwara, in which he played an honest cop. He also featured in Mahesh Bhatt’s hit drama, Saathi. Brett Lee, too was part of the silver screen in 2016, when he acted in Aussie-Bolly film, UnIndian. He played a charming Australian English teacher who falls for an Indian single mother

If I said I would be ready by 9 am, it was at 9 am at the dot. But the film industry has its own rhythm and delays that I had to get used to. Also, in the beginning, when it came to retakes, I would get really bothered. In cricket, you don’t have a second chance. I kept telling the director that I want to do my shot in one take but that is not how it functions. I learnt that, even if I gave the right shot, retakes were imperative because there was a chance that the camera angle wasn’t right or a co-artist wasn’t getting his or her lines correct or the lighting had to be readjusted or the script had to be changed last moment etc. So, I learnt to be patient. It is pretty challenging. Is this film a one off or you will continue acting? It will depend on the role that is offered to me. Though I retired from playing cricket this year, I am a cricketer and love being associated with cricket. I love watching players grow. Jammu and Kashmir never had a cricket team and now does. TheWse boys are playing cricket at the highest level and that is good for the state and the country. Also cricket commentary is a big thing for me. I know that some cricketers have appeared as themselves in movies and acted too. Here I am playing an Interpol officer and if all goes well and if I get respectful roles, I don’t mind acting again. How did you keep busy during the lockdown? I work out regularly and have spent time with the family. The kids keep me busy- my child Imran and my nephews Rayaan and Ayaan are all under 5 years of age and have different interests. One of them loves farming the other enjoys doing many things and one loves cooking and playing chef. No, no one is about cricket yet. It is totally up to them as to what they want to do. I watched Gujarati cinema during the lockdown and I am glad it is doing well.  November 2020 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 63

INTERVIEW

Reliving

1983

He plays the legendary cricketer Mohinder Amarnath in the upcoming Kabir Khan directorial 83’ based on Indian team’s major win at the Cricket World Cup of 1983. Amarnath had won Man of the Match in the series against West Indies and was also the Vice Captain of the Indian cricket team. Manju Ramanan speaks to the cricketer turned actor Saqib Saleem in Dubai who is also seen on Voot Select web serial Crackdown.

How euphoric were you when you bagged the role? es, I have played state level cricket and when I read that Kabir Khan has cast Ranveer Singh in the role of Kapil Dev, I called Kabir sir and met him. He asked me if I had played cricket and asked for an audition. I would then be tested for my cricketing skills. I played it low and went for the workshop conducted by cricketer Balwinder Sandhu who is the creative consultant to the film. When Sandhu sir saw me play, he took me aside and asked me if I had played serious cricket before and he was surprised to know I had played at state level. And I was in!

Y

How did your family react to the news? My dad got extremely happy when I said I was playing Mohinder Amarnath. A pioneer of test cricket, he was the Man of the Match in 1983 when he took Michael Holding’s wicket. My mother was misty eyed. She has arduously woken me up early mornings and taken me to cricket practice in an auto rickshaw. I took to cinema as a second option and now that cricket comes to my life in such a way, we are all thrilled! When I read the script, I had goose bumps. Each character that comprised of us

Kapil’s devils was etched out so beautifully that it felt like a team right from the start. Imagine a group of cricketers who never thought they would win a world cup. In fact, two of them were planning a trip (one a honeymoon) knowing that they would lose. Describe your time at Lord’s cricket stadium, the seat of action? The film celebrates cricket and this is the India we want to be proud of. Among the actors, we have Sandeep Patil’s son playing his father and Malcolm Marshal’s son playing his dad. It is not just a film but an emotion that is cricket. When we’re shooting the World Cup presentation ceremony at Lord’s, Kabir sir, very coolly told us, that the cup we were shooting with was the real cup that India had won in 1983. For a moment, all 13 boys started crying. Here we were playing gulley cricket and here we were at the mecca of cricket with the trophy India had won. I called up my mom and started bawling! I never felt that acting in a film was so close to my life. The film is about the pride of India. How was it meeting Mohinder Amarnath?

We have Sandeep Patil’s son playing his father and Malcolm Marshal’s son playing his dad. It is not just a film but an emotion that is cricket

waiting for his response and he finally said he liked what I did. I felt so relieved. It wasn’t easy playing him – every cricket fan knows his body language and the way he moved on the field.

What about your web series Crackdown? My character is very interesting. I play a smooth operating secret agent and so there is a lot of action. There are a lot of unsung heroes like him who are putting their life at stake so that we can sleep in peace at night. My character Riyaz Pathan is always has to be on the go. He is always lurking in the shadows to stop threats towards the nation. I had to be physically fit. I made sure that I look like a mean machine. But he does it like a 9-5 job and very clinical about it.

I met him during the shoot of Dishoom in Abu Dhabi. That time, I was an inquisitive cricket kid asking him a million questions and he would have that soft smile. He is one of the gentlest people I have met but when he speaks, you listen. And I am a talkative person

and I had to be this calm man. Mohinder Amarnath is very Dhoni like in his mannerism, he is a big brother to the team and very contained and grounded. At that time, we never exchanged numbers. Five years down the line, I am playing him! When we went to Dharamshala for

the prep, he came and spent 5 days with us. I was overwhelmed for the first two days and wanted to impress him. I had to impersonate him and I didn’t want him in the shoot but he had to be there. So, I naturally wanted feedback. And once I followed him till his car

How did you manage your set -backs? I don’t take myself seriously. Sarcasm helps in dealing with life. When I moved to Mumbai, I had asked my dad for a year to pursue acting and in my first year, I got my film. I got a film I can’t complain. I am happy. I am doing webseries, working with best of people, technicians etc. I don’t get affected at all. I am a sportsman and that attitude helps. I am highly competitive and hate losing but if I fail, I will keep trying harder the next time. November 2020 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 65

At 1.4 billion people, India is the most populated country in the world. Along with its population, comes its rich Indian culture that deserves a spot in the world order. Bollywood, India’s cultural ambassador, is the largest cinema industry in the world, followed by Hollywood and Nollywood. The influence of Bollywood is not merely on the Indian subcontinent but has global appeal. I come from the Philippines where we have a colonial history including being under America. Our songs and culture are very American and Hollywood centric and there isn’t too much of shift towards other cinema(Bollywood, Chinese films, European and Iranian films). India proudly has Bollywood to state the Indian perspective to the rest of the world. Film is a great medium to spread culture awareness. I have admired the work of particularly Aamir Khan and I am also very impressed with the output volume of Shah Rukh Khan and the films of Sushmita Sen, Kareena Kapoor and many others.

What was your first Bollywood film?

Lagaan was my first Bollywood film and I loved it. I am mesmerized when history is told through the medium of film. Many of our farmers back in the day had to pay taxes to the Spaniards and other colonizers who ruled us. All of them left their imprint on our people. They did the same to India and this is why Lagaan resonates much with me. Indians have devised their own ways to keep their culture and identity alive and your film industry thrives without completely aping the West. Bollywood dares to defy Hollywood. That is why I like Bollywood. It is symbolic to see how Indian cinema tells the stories of its people in the way it wants to not in the way other people would like to hear the Indian narrative. If I were an American film maker, I would probably cut the singing and dancing parts, unless I was making a musical. I believe that you must find out what is inherently natural to you to tell your story through your words. The Filipino film industry has a marked western influence. We have a lot of singing and dancing in our culture but it is hardly reflected in our films. In the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s we made 300 films a year but over the years we have gravitated towards less mainstream and more independent films. Also, OTT platforms are giving people the opportunity to create their own kind of content and show them in digital format.

Sushmita Sen, the former Miss Universe was crowned in Manila. Have you met or interacted with her?

Sushmita Sen was very popular in the Philippines since she was the first Miss India crowned Miss Universe in Manila. I did have a chance to meet her at Danube Home in Sharjah. She was the brand ambassador of Danube Home and it was a great moment having to meet her.

Have you visited India?

I haven’t. But I am very keen. I have strong respect for India for its place in the world, the history of its people and religion. One of our senior diplomats back home said that India is the place where the creme de la creme of diplomats must be posted to.

Do Filipinos watch Hindi films in Manila and in Dubai?

I am not sure in theatres but with the OTT platforms Indian cinematic content is popular. Films like Baahubali and Robot 2.0 are very popular and so is actor Rajnikanth. My wife Yasmin is very fond of Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas are very popular back home and so are Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Aamir Khan. I enjoyed watching 3 Idiots and Dangal (that was about the Phogat sisters). Aamir gained 30 kilos and lost the weight for his role. I also admire AamirKhan because he is my height. If a superstar of that height is so popular in the biggest cinema industry in the world, there is hope for short people (laughs). I loved watching PK, Fan and Main Hoon Na. I feel that we must embrace the new medium made available to us to view this content, something 20 years ago was not even easy for film buffs to source.

How do you see Dubai and its leadership encourage talent from across the world?

Dubai is the hotbed of innovation. It is the capital of the new world. It is the place where people live out their dreams, share stories and somehow come up with a menu that you can share with the rest of the world. Filipino designers Michael Cinco, Ezra and Amato who are based in Dubai exemplify this confluence. Their gowns have intricate work by Indian craftsmen and these elaborate gowns are worn by Jennifer Lopez, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Lady Gaga to name a few and they represent the success of every migrant in Dubai - cementing Dubai’s place as a spring of talent and opportunity. INTERVIEW

Creating Bollywood’s Female The Hindi film industry has often portrayed very strong women characters through its cinema, but most of its superheroes still tend to be men. Ali Abbas Zafar is out to shatter that mould. The director is in Dubai and Abu Dhabi scouting locations for his next film Super Soldier starring Katrina Kaif where she plays a superhero. He has also been in the news when he announced

Mr India 2, which he states is nothing similar to the original except for a few names that will be repeated. Manju Ramanan speaks to the acclaimed director who has worked closely with Salman Khan in Bharat, Tiger Zinda Hai, Sultan and more and is all excited about his superhero ventures.

Tell us about your superhero film with Katrina Kaif? We have had strong women characters but never a female superhero. I was toying with the idea for a very long time. A superhero film based in reality and whatever is happening around us. Katrina Kaif was quite excited to be a part of it. We are in pre-production stage and a lot will depend on the current Covid situation. We are

looking to roll next year in Dubai and Abu Dhabi but majorly Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi’s Twofour54 has been really helpful. TZH and Bharat were shot there. Why did you choose Abu Dhabi as a location? Abu Dhabi’s Twofour54 is meticulous and logical and that is why it is great working with them. This time though, I am not shooting in the deserts but in downtown with glass buildings and malls in the background with lots of action thrown in. With Abu Dhabi, the permissions are sought out easily by Twofour54. Georgia is another location we have narrowed down to. There are many new regulations now after the pandemic and we have to incorporate those too. How have you fashioned out Katrina’s superhero character? It is too early to talk about these things and official announcements will come soon. All I can say is that

68 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST November 2020

68-69-FFME- NOVEMBER2020-ALI ABBAS.indd 68

29/10/2020 4:09 PM

it will be a visual spectacle for sure. There will be an elaborate international team working on the project. We all know that Katrina is great at dance and action and this film will establish that very well. Her role will be something like what Uma Thurman did in Kill Bill. People started looking at her in a whole different way. All I can say is that it is a superhero film which is packed with logic and science.

Writing for superstars? What do you have to keep in mind? Yea I have to keep in mind that I am writing for a superstar but the first thought is to write a story that is relevant to the generation and then write characters that will resonate with the maximum number of people. There is broad scope writing and there is intimate writing. I prefer the broad scope way of writing and find soul in the story. If you look at Sultan or Gunday or Bharat, the soul story is very universal. And such stories are best portrayed on superstars because of their mass appeal and connect with audiences worldwide. The emotion is multilayered. So, the best approach is to not make it complicated. To quote a food analogy, just serve a well-made thali with all the ingredients and make it your very best. Rajkumar Hirani, Rohit Shetty do it too. How do you avoid clichés yet cater to the masses? I somehow or the other try to find a story that is around me. I am not inspired by stories that are distant or those I have watched. I have come with a middle-class background level, seen people at the grassroots and known their journey. So, naturally, they become the characters I create. A superhero film for instance needs the drama around the superhero like masks, cape and costumes. You can’t negate that because your target audience is a 6-year old’s imagination. All the women in your films are empowered and strong characters? Yes, that is how I see them. Katrina’s character Madam Sir in Bharat is popular because she holds her own ground. She is placed in a certain era but is independent and strong. Her role in Mere Brother ki Dulhan too, is not meek. She is front footed. Even in Tiger Zinda Hai, that is set up in a socio-political scenario, she is shown to have a mind of her own. Your films have a fragrance of the past era, yet talk of today’s issues

What about Mr India 2? I have just finished writing it and working on the second part. The film is a trilogy set in the present and a bit in the future and has a completely new story set in a new world with characters. I just finished writing part 1. The same characters go over to three parts and I am hoping that it is a full-blown theatrical release. It is produced by Zee and my company. It is an elaborate film and I have been prepping from the last 6 months. So elaborate it is that we have to make a comic book out of it that is the script – so that we know that in each frame, this is how the characters look, the guns look, the cars look etc. I used to love Diamond Comics – Nagraj and Super commandoes and Chacha Chaudhry and of course Spider and Batman.

I am old school. My family is grounded in Indian culture. I am a hill boy. I grew up in Dehradun where I did my schooling and then went to Delhi University that was my major exposure to the wide world. At Kirodimal, I was exposed to theatre and the college has produced artistes such as Satish Kaushik, Syed Naqvi, Kabir Khan, Vijay Krishna Acharya, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub etc. Somehow, all that I learnt there transpires into the work I do today. Your voice needs to resonate with things around you and it should be popular. And then, be popular and then push the envelope, that is the challenge. n November 2020 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 69
