Just as effortlessly, the actress had then made a smooth transition to more meaningful cinema making powerful statements and addressing issues that encouraged women empowerment through her films! HOW DOES SUMMER AFFECT YOUR SKIN?

AS THE WEATHER GETS WARMER AND HUMIDITY INCREASES IN THE ENVIRONMENT, YOUR SKIN’S SEBACEOUS GLANDS START PRODUCING EXCESS SEBUM (NATURAL OIL). THE OIL SECRETED GETS STUCK ON THE SURFACE OF THE SKIN, LEADING TO STICKINESS, GREASE AND BLOCKED PORES. WHEN YOUR SKIN IS EXPOSED TO HARMFUL UV RAYS, MELANIN PRODUCTION INCREASES TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM SUN DAMAGE. BUT EXCESS MELANIN RESULTS IN DARKER, TANNED SKIN. HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN DO!

SURFACE OF THE SKIN, LEADING TO STICKINESS, GREASE HARMFUL UV RAYS, MELANIN PRODUCTION INCREASES

1. Use face wash to remove excess oil. People with dry skin would need a non-foaming cleanser. Opt for mild, alcohol-free and pH balanced cleansers.

2. Maintain a good skin care routine through cleansing, toning and moisturizing twice a day, that will help keep your skin clean and fresh.

3. Keep your skin hydrated by using a hydrating face mask or carry a facial mist to freshen your skin at regular intervals.

4. Exfoliate for healthy skin with a face scrub least twice a week. Make sure you exfoliate the lips and the neck too.

5. Wear sunscreen to avoid a stubborn tan, that can cause premature aging, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. A good sunscreen with SPF 30-50 is vital for the summer months

6. Avoid heavy makeup and if you do, use a tinted lip balm and moisturizer if you need to wear some makeup.

7. Use a good toner for the T-zone of the face. To prevent sweat and oil from clogging these pores, use an aloe vera or cucumber-based toner as they are lighter.

8. Moisturize well with a non-greasy formula based on your skin type. But look for ingredients like antioxidants like vitamins A and C.

9. Don’t forget your eyes, lips & feet and always wear sunglasses to protect the eyes from the sun’s harmful rays and do use a moisturizing under eye gel; and a lip balm with SPF under your lipstick.

10. Stay away from sugary drinks and opt for lemonade instead of cola and intake fresh veggies and fruits.

Raveena Tandon The &Glorious Glam

IN THIS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW, THE ICONIC RAVEENA TANDON TALKS TO AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE ABOUT BEING HONOURED WITH THE PRESTIGIOUS PADMA SHRI AWARD, REIGNING THE MARQUEE AS THE QUINTESSENTIAL HEROINE IN THE 90S, HER TRANSITION AS A CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED ACTRESS IN GROUND-BREAKING CINEMA AND CONTINUING TO RULE HEARTS AS A POWER-HOUSE PERFORMER EVEN ON OTT

From reigning the marquee and ruling hearts of millions all through the 90s as the quintessential Bollywood heroine of some of the biggest commercial hits and highest box-office grossers to wowing the audience with her power-packed and impactful performances in path-breaking and critically-acclaimed cinema, Raveena Tandon has done it all with great aplomb! Winning some of the Nation’s highest and most prestigious honours like the Padma Shri as well as of Indian cinema like the National Award, the stunning star of films like Mohra, Aks, Shool, Satta, continues to captivate audiences across generations with blockbusters like K.G.F.: Chapter 2 and her run of ground-breaking performances continues even on OTT where she made her hit debut with Aranyak

But there’s more to the gorgeous diva than just being an iconic star on the reel! A philanthropist, an environmentalist and a wildlife photographer, her Rudra Foundation is also doing praiseworthy work for the cause of children, women and animal welfare. A woman who dares to follow her heart and lead by example, she chose to be a single mother to two adopted girls when she was barely 21. Currently, she is the Wildlife Goodwill Ambassador of Maharashtra and also the first participant from the entertainment industry to be a delegate at W20. From being the heart-throb in commercial movies and rank entertainers to proving her acting mettle in arthouse cinema and socially relevant films, and from taking up women’s causes and supporting women empowerment on screen and off it, to addressing wildlife concerns she has done it all with immense passion and continues to be quite an inspiration for women across.

Even as encapsulating her interesting and inspiring journey in a few pages is nearimpossible, I caught up with the actress for this cover story while she visited us in Dubai. Candid, fun, extremely endearing and ravishing as ever, it’s easy to see why the illustrious star continues to be such a loved and respected name. She has more to celebrate as a proud mom too with her daughter Rasha Thadani graduating recently. In this exclusive interview, the iconic star and woman of substance, Raveena Tandon talks all about it and more. Excerpts:

Congratulations on being honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri! How does that feel?

Honoured and grateful. Thank you so much, Government of India, for acknowledging my contributions, my life, my passion and purpose – cinema and the arts, that allowed me to contribute, not only to the film industry, but also beyond. I thank all those who guided me through this journey of art and craft of cinema – all those who held my hand through it, and all those who watched me from their place above. I owe this to my father – Ravi Tandon (late legendary filmmaker).

From the 90s – when you made your debut to the present day – you have a strong following across generations, what do you attribute that relatability to and what’s secret to this longevity?

The new generation of actors are fully trained and prepared. We got the opportunity to give the kind of challenging roles maybe in our 10th film which they are doing in their 2nd or 3rd film. It’s commendable that today’s actors are willing to take risks and explore offbeat roles, as it adds depth and diversity to the portrayal of characters on screen. I made a conscious effort to try out and do different roles and the audiences accepted me.

From ruling the marquee in the 90s as a commercial glam star to garnering acclaim in more ground-breaking and powerful roles, how was the transition back then? That was a deliberate choice made in 2000. I was starting to feel stereotyped and stuck in the same roles. I figured I was capable of more. I tried to see what else I could do other than just perform ‘Akhiyon se goli maare’. Then came a spate of films, Satta, Daman, Shool, Jaago, Ghulam-E-Mustafa, Aks. Though Aks was more glamorous, it was absolutely performance-oriented, and that year I won the Filmfare Award. I was stagnating around 1998–1999. And I wanted to do something more. I wanted to push the boundaries and see what more I could do. I’ve

Thereisnochallengeforactor’sageorstardomonOTT.Thereis nobaggageaboutwhatactorlookslikeorifhehasasix-packor not.Thestorymattershere.Thatiswhattheaudiencewantsto seeinthismedium.Well-writtenrolesareneededforgood performancesandcontent.

enjoyed every challenge that has come my way.

You have constantly been evolving with the mediums too – From doing a KGF 2 in the South to doing OTT…

Yes, I wanted to do something different with Aranyak. I didn’t want to act in the same stereotypical way that others had perceived me. It was a risk for me. I had

many large-scale offers that went on to become huge successes. And all of a sudden I was asking myself, ‘I hope I have not made the wrong choice. I hope this pays off’. I’ve actually done a lot of South films in the 90s and even now. In fact, I think they’re always at an advantage because they keep their traditions, their rituals, their culture so deep rooted and woven into their stories that it always hits with the masses.

From heroines taking a backseat and all the talks of having a short shelf life earlier, you have clearly rewritten rules in Bollywood!

There was a trend and a cultural thing in India that if a heroine married, they ceased to be the male fantasy. I feel that the trend is changing now and even the audiences are accepting it whether it’s marital status or age. The audience now

14 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST June 2023 COVER STORY

are more accepting that this is just like another job for us and that’s a good thing that came about. For example Madhuri Dixit, Kajol, Tabu and me… I felt were doing phenomenal work. Now’s a great time especially for today’s actresses and five years down the line they will see an even better time.

So many songs when it comes to mentioning that one stunning and glamorous heroine and heart-throb in Bollywood use your name as a reference, your songs are still blockbusters even with remakes, does that make you smile?

It’s just been great hearing all these songs come back again, getting a new life, getting a new beat. And it’s a win-win situation for me.

From awards to acclaim from audience, you’ve had the best of both, but what between the two is the bigger achievement for you?

For many actors, both awards and acclaim from the audience hold significance and are seen as significant achievements. Awards represent recognition and validation from the industry and peers, highlighting their talent and skill. They often serve as a testament to the actor’s dedication and hard work. On the other hand, the acclaim and appreciation from the audience hold immense value as well. The audience’s response reflects the connection and impact an actor has made on them through their performances. It shows that the actor has successfully resonated with the viewers, entertained them, and left a lasting impression. Ultimately, the audience’s support and love are vital for an actor’s longevity and success in the industry.

It’s important to note that the importance of awards or audience acclaim can vary from person to person. Some actors may prioritize industry recognition and the validation that comes with awards, while others may find audience appreciation and their love for their work as the ultimate reward. Ultimately, it is a personal preference and may differ for each individual.

How did you handle the Friday ups and downs at the box

office? Did they affect you on a personal level?

The entertainment industry can be unpredictable, and actors often need to cultivate resilience to navigate the ups and downs. I enjoy the process of making that film so much that after I finish shooting for it, I am done with the movie. The outcome doesn’t really affect me much because I have enjoyed the process. For me, just creating it and being part of it, having discussions, going in front of the camera and personifying that person I am playing, it’s the high point of being part of that film.

What’re the biggest differences you see in today’s style of filmmaking and the industry overall?

Nowadays, women are given more importance in a film. Women are now not just eye-candy; parts are written where she has an important role in society. Also, today the trend is such that people do one film in a year. Back then I remember I have done 12 films in a year too, but those were the days and the way of working was different. Today you can take your time, read the scripts and choose the kind of roles you want. And I think I like it more that way,

Personally, how would you say you have changed over the years?

I’ve become less impulsive, and I’ve gained more stability. My husband, Anil Thadani has made a significant contribution.

If there was any one advice you could give to yourself in the 90s, what would it be? It’s been a journey and an experience. I don’t carry pain or hurt; I only carry lessons, so I wouldn’t want to erase any experiences in life.

Has the social media in some way upped the game for actors today whether in terms of reach or popularity?

Yes, social media has significantly upped the game for actors today, both in terms of reach and popularity. Social media platforms provide actors with a direct and immediate connection to their fans. Sometimes there were lies being printed that used to

sell the copies. At that time, you were at their mercy. You used to beg and plead that this was the wrong story; please don’t go ahead with it. Thank God for social media today, where you can put out every kind of proof right in front of people.

What’s your take on the OTT with the kind of freedom it provides the actors from the Friday box-office pressures?

It’s helping everyone. For example, OTT is providing our character actors a ton more opportunities to shine. It is fantastic because they are not limited to playing a single minor

character; instead, they play protagonists and other incredible roles. You can discover a variety of stories on OTT, and each story has a specific niche audience. Because there is a specific audience for it on OTT, the producers are not under any pressure for it to perform well at the box-office. Because of this, in my opinion, people are experimenting with various types of narratives.

Is OTT more challenging?

There is no challenge for actor’s age or stardom. There is no baggage about what actor looks like or if he has a six-pack or not. The story matters here.

June 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 15
It’sbeenajourneyandan experience.Idon’tcarrypainorhurt; Ionlycarrylessons,soIwouldn’t wanttoeraseanyexperiencesinlife.

That is what the audience wants to see in this medium. Well-written roles are needed for good performances and content.

How has the criteria of choosing a project changed over the years, what’s the deal-breaker for you today?

The criteria for choosing a project and deal-breakers can be highly subjective and dependent on the individual actor’s goals, artistic aspirations, and personal preferences.

What’s been your greatest learning in the journey so far?

It’s important to note that each person’s journey is unique, and the learnings can vary based on individual experiences, perspectives, and personal growth. What one person learns may not be the same for another. The journey of self-discovery and personal growth is ongoing, and new learnings keep emerging at different stages of life.

Through the years, besides being a top star, you have been a role model, too, like you adopted two girls (Pooja and Chhaya) when you were barely 21… what has been your courage,

strength and conviction?

Back then, the wave of feminism hadn’t hit India as strongly as it has today. Female infanticide was on the rise. No one wanted to adopt daughters. The moment I set my eyes on my girls, it was love at first sight. My life has been a joyride ever since. My most cherished memories involve their childhood.

On your low-days, you always turn to? Engaging in self-care activities can be helpful during low days. This can involve activities like practicing mindfulness or meditation, exercising, getting enough sleep, engaging in hobbies, or doing things that bring joy and relaxation.

One advice you’d have for your children (Rasha Thadani and Ranbirvardhan Thadani) if they enter the industry? I don’t think there is any single piece of advice I can give them; their entire upbringing is advice to them. What my parents taught me, I taught them, and I hope they turn out the way I expect them to. But it is their life and I will always be there for them, good or bad. I’ll be there to help them.

Besides contributing to the cause of women empowerment, on screen and

even off it, you are known for your contributions as a philanthropist and an environmentalist too… I often use my social media platform and influence to raise awareness, mobilize resources, and drive positive change. My contributions may involve financial donations, volunteering time and skills, using the voice to amplify important messages, or engaging in hands-on activities related to philanthropy and environmentalism.

Also tell us more about your other passion as a wildlife photographer? Wildlife photography is my passion and capturing moments on camera is sheer thrill. The excitement and love for the forest and to conserve what we have on our beautiful planet with its beautiful creatures, which man is slowly destroying, is what draws me to support and take up initiatives.

Your upcoming projects?

I will be next seen in T-Series family entertainer Ghudchadi alongside Sanjay Dutt, Arbaaz Khan’s upcoming social drama Patna Shukla. I have recently finished shooting for a Disney plus Hotstar web-series. I will soon start shooting for Aranyak Season 2.

Every year, the hues decorating international fashion and beauty trends vary along with the seasons. The colours used in current fashions frequently reflect the changes occurring in the world. Think of bold, sophisticated, intense and peaceful all together. Cobalt blue is the colour that comes to mind. The right time has come to update your wardrobe with blue tones that exude highspirited optimism. The bright tone lends itself to almost any setting and can be found on both formal gowns and informal t-shirts, giving it a broad appeal. The tone is also entirely gender neutral, which enables it to go beyond established boundaries in fashion. With all the chaos going on in the world, we deserve to look a little bit cool, bold and joyful in blue. In fact, dopamine dressing is here to stay and we couldn't be happier.

HAULING CARGO

Cargos are both chic and comfy

Gather your items and shove them in various pockets because cargo pants are back. Cargo trousers have thoroughly dominated the fashion scene, having made their way from the ranks of the British army at the end of the 1930s to the runways of today. The modern version of the utilitarian trousers, which originally conjured visions of hard camouflage cloth, is now free-flowing and has a wider leg that is more attractive than functional. For anyone seeking to create a trend-driven capsule wardrobe, cargos are the ideal day-to-night staple because they can be worn for everything from a casual streetwear appearance to a sophisticated night out ensemble. White, beige, brown, and black are definitely the most common colour schemes but they also come in interesting shades for anyone wishing to give the design a little more individuality.

Packing punch! Sonakshi Sinha IN A

REAL, RAW AND GRITTY - SONAKSHI SINHA TALKS TO AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE ABOUT NAILING THE COP ROLE TO PERFECTION - IN HER OTT DEBUT DAHAAD PHOTOGRAPHY - MOHIT RAI

Sonakshi Sinha believes in letting her work do all the talking, and her performance in her debut OTT outing has not just spoken tons about her talent as an actor, but has been roaring out loud about her being a power-house performer. Packing in a punch as a no-nonsense cop in the Amazon Original crime drama Dahaad that’s streaming on Prime Video, the actress has us hoping for a sequel already. I have seen the series, and she’s easily one of the top reasons that make it a must-watch! I do hope to see Sonakshi in many more such roles that do her justice because clearly the actress has so much more to offer than is being tapped! In a candid conversation with the gorgeous star I ask her about all this and more. Excerpts

WHAT WAS YOUR HEADSPACE LIKE AHEAD OF DAHAAD’S RELEASE?

Super excited. It’s something I’d been waiting for so long. We started shooting in 2020 now it’s finally released. We went through the entire pandemic, and this is a project, a role actually that I was waiting for all my life and now that it’s here I’m super excited. I can’t wait for everybody to watch it.

YOU DO FIT THE ROLE TO THE T. HOW DID YOU PREP FOR THIS ROLE TO GET INTO THE SKIN OF THE CHARACTER LIKE THEY SAY?

Actually most of the preparations I do is by speaking to my directors because they are the ones who have the vision, they are the ones who stay with the character and script for way longer than anyone else involved in the project. So, I like to speak to them. And Reema (director Reema Kagti) told me one thing specifically - she said just play it straight, nothing filmi about it. It has to be very real, very raw. I had to train in a certain way, learn a few new things to be able to play this cop character of Anjali Bhaati, like I learnt bike-riding and I also trained a couple of months in Judo. I had to learn the dialect because the world that’s created by them, all the actors went through workshops to learn how to speak like we’re from there and it shouldn’t sound like you know one person sounding different. So that preparation was actually quite challenging and good fun as well, because I got to learn so many new things for a role.

WHAT WAS THAT ONE THING THAT MADE YOU SAY A YES TO THIS ROLE?

The one thing was that she’s just so powerful and she’s so strong. She’s a gogetter, she’s stubborn! She’s faced with a lot of obstacles, maneuvering herself in a man’s world but still she powers through and just the strength of the character is what really attracted me towards it. The way it’s beautifully written and it’s so well-rounded. Her struggles are shown, the things she had to deal with on a daily

I think my biggest takeaway is to not get phased by success or failure and just keep moving forward. Because things change Friday to Friday within the industry. You never know what might work for you, what might not. But that doesn’t mean you stop working. I think it’s very important to give it all you have.

basis have been shown. And yet she’s so focused on what she wants, and she does everything to go out there and get it. That’s a really attractive quality for any woman to have. And that’s why I was instantly attracted to this role and in fact, as soon as the narration was over, I didn’t even ask for the script, I said “you know what, you can send in all of that later but nobody else is going to play this role other than me. Reema and Zoya (filmmaker Zoya Akhtar), I’m doing this!”

ANY TIPS FROM YOUR DAD (SENIOR STAR SHATRUGHAN SINHA) ON PLAYING A COP?

Oh no, he was just really happy. He was thrilled that I was playing a police officer because when I was a child, he used to tell all his friends that I’m going to make Sonakshi, a police officer when she grows up. It was his dream that I become a cop. So, when I did wear that uniform for that look test, the first person I sent a picture was to my father and I told him “Dad, now your dreams have come true.”

BUT HE’S PLAYED A COP IN SO MANY MOVIES AND YOU MADE YOUR DEBUT IN DABANGG THAT HAD SALMAN KHAN PLAY A COP. ALSO WE’VE HAD A LOT OF ACTRESSES WHO HAVE DONE IT LIKE THERE’S TABU, RANI MUKERJI, PRIYANKA CHOPRA... DID YOU HAVE ANYONE IN MIND?

I didn’t have anyone in mind per se because I don’t like to work that way. I like to make my own character rather than base it on somebody else. But the names you’ve taken are people who I really appreciate as actors, and they have done such justice to the roles that they’ve played as police officers. So yes, they are wonderful in their own right but I wanted to make my own character.

DO YOU SEE A SEQUEL TO IT ALREADY?

We haven’t talked yet, but I’m rooting for it because I want to be Anjali Bhaati again.

IS THERE ANY ONE THING THAT YOU’VE LEARNT ABOUT YOURSELF OR DISCOVERED A NEW FACET TO YOU WHILE WORKING ON THIS ROLE? Yes! I learnt how to ride a bike very well. Like “Oh I can do

this, nice! Pehle Kyu nahi Kiya!” (Laughs).

HOW MUCH OF SONAKSHI DO WE GET TO SEE IN ANJALI BHAATI? WE KNOW THAT YOU ARE VERY RESILIENT AS A PERSON YOURSELF? SO ARE THERE A LOT OF SIMILARITIES?

Yes, I think in terms of her inner strength and her determination and her nononsense attitude! But I don’t have her demeanour, she’s quite the toughie. I’m a softie. But I think in terms of her attributes, her personality traits, we are quite similar. We are both strong women.

FROM A LOOTERA TO AN AKIRA AND NOW THIS ONE, YOU HAVE TAPPED MULTIPLE GENRES, DONE SUCH VERSATILE ROLES AND BROUGHT A BEAUTIFUL DEPTH TO ALL THE CHARACTERS. SO, WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT PROJECT, WHAT IS IT THAT YOU’RE EXACTLY LOOKING AT?

See the genre doesn’t matter, I want to be that actor, that when filmmakers think of me, they think that okay fine she’ll fit in any genre. I want them to have that much confidence in me. So yeah, I don’t want to restrict myself to any genre, but I want to do roles that portray women very strongly on screen. And

I want to play powerful characters and I want to play different characters. I don’t want to repeat something I’ve done before. So, my lookout now is that whenever I do have scripts to read, my first priority is that is this role different and is this role powerful!

ALMOST ALL YOUR ROLES WE’VE SEEN YOU HAVE BEEN VERY STRONG AND DEFINED CHARACTERS. SO, I THINK IT’S JUST AN EXTENSION OF WHO YOU ARE REALLY? Yeah, could be because maybe that’s why I also connect with the characters that I do so much.

YOU’VE BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW SO WHAT HAS YOUR BIGGEST TAKEAWAY BEEN IN TERMS OF YOUR LEARNING FROM THE JOURNEY SO FAR?

I think my biggest takeaway is to not get phased by success or failure and just keep moving forward. Because things change Friday to Friday within the industry. You never know what might work for you, what might not. But that doesn’t mean you stop working. I think it’s very important to give it all you have. Like even today when

I’m starting a new project, I always approach it like it’s my first film. That’s what keeps me as motivated, as excited about it. And I guess that’s pretty much why I’ve been here also for 13 years because that’s always been my approach to my work. I’m enjoying it till now. As much as I’ve done, I’m still enjoying what I’m doing, and I hope I continue to do so.

WHAT ARE YOU OTHER PROJECTS THAT WE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO AFTER DAHAAD?

Well, I’m currently shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali sir’s Heeramandi which is also a series, and which is also a very new and different character that you all will get to see me in. And there’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan which is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. I’m currently shooting for both these projects.

AMONG THE ROLES THAT YOU’VE PLAYED, IS THERE ANY ONE THAT YOU HAVE HELD REALLY CLOSE TO YOU?

There’re a few actually. There was Paakhi in Lootera, there was Noor, there was Akira. These three I think are my top favourites and now Anjali Bhaati has joined the club.

DO YOU FEEL SOMEWHERE LET DOWN WHEN A ROLE LIKE IN LOOTERA DOESN’T GET THE KIND OF RECOGNITION IT SHOULD?

Till today when I meet people, the first thing they tell me is – ‘We loved you in Lootera, it’s such a beautiful film, you were so good in it’. And that truly is my reward. So, I’m okay, I’ve never been one to kind of work for “that” sort of recognition. What matters to me, first and foremost, is how satisfied I am doing a character like this, playing a role like this, being a part of the film. The experience is what is most important to me. Other than that, it’s all secondary.

ONE THING ABOUT SONAKSHI THAT NO ONE KNOWS?

Let it be unknown na, why do you want to know? (Laughs)

In a of his League Own!

Vijay Varma

POWERHOUSE PERFORMER VIJAY VARMA GETS CANDID WITH AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE ABOUT RAISING THE BAR WITH EVERY PERFORMANCE AND ALSO MAKES SOME SHOCKING AND MANY INTERESTING REVELATIONS

Vijay

Varma is on a roll! The actor most recently attended the prestigious Cannes films festival, where he once again proved to be quite a head-turner making a stylish statement that reflects his sartorial fashion choices. Quite the risk taker, whether it’s breaking gender stereotypes with his fashion or his unpredictable roles, the versatile actor has been winning accolades back-toback for his riveting and power-packed performances in all his outings, both on the big screen and the OTT. Manto, Pink, Gully Boy, Darlings, She, Mirzapur and now the latest Dahaad in which he plays a remorseless serial-killer, the powerhouse performer seems to nail his layered roles and often flawed characters to perfection with an effortless ease. And while he has consistently been raising the bar with every nuanced performance, the actor isn’t letting any of that fame or success get to him on a personal note. As is evident, when I caught up with the easy-going and charming actor for a candid tete-a-tete. Surrounded by selfie-seekers and his fans, he obliges most with a smile and kind words. So, when I finally get down to our conversation, I couldn’t help but ask him about his fascination for the grey roles especially the ‘antiheroine’ kinds! And Vijay is quick to point out that while that may be the case on reel, ironically, in real life, it is the women who have played the biggest role in shaping his life and in fact, he has great respect for them and holds them in the highest regard. Be it his mother or then the women filmmakers who have helmed several of his works and shaped him as an actor including Nandita Das, Zoya Akhtar and now Reema Kagti in the Amazon Original Dahaad that’s steaming on Prime Video. Excerpts from an exclusive interview with the man of the moment: Vijay Varma!

The feedback for Dahaad has been phenomenal…

Yeah, the response has been fabulous and it’s very heartening to receive such a lot of love and appreciation from all quarters - makers, fraternity, fans, friends, family, they all have been reaching out and they are intrigued with what they saw. I was very confident about the show and I’m excited to see it pan out the way it has.

We’ve only been hearing good and happy things about you on the personal front. But when it comes to on-screen, you seem to have a knack for sharing this strange equation with women - She, Darlings, Pink, now Dahaad too! There’s no ‘normal romantic’ equation…

Bahut log already kar rahe hain na normal romance (laughs)!

But is there a fascination for these flawed and grey characters?

Imitiaz Ali ne She likha hai, Jasmeet ne Darlings likhi hai. Reema and Zoya ne Dahaad likha hai. So, I feel these guys write such incredible, juicy, delicious parts that I can’t say no, and these are women-centric projects. And mostly fronted by women directors and writers. So, I’m very excited to be in a time where so many women are doing such incredible work and they see me fitted out to be a part of their world and creations. And I am ‘Team Women’ so I end up doing a lot of stuff with them.

Absolutely! It’s interesting to see the layers that you add to any role

that you’re doing on screen rather than panning them out as onedimensional characters. And you’ve also always stood your ground even in an ensemble cast… Is that from your FTII training?

Yeah, there is some merit to the training. Some confidence and ease that comes when you know the job a little bit. And secondly also I have been an active student of acting. So I try to learn. I try to push myself. I try to do projects that other boys wouldn’t do. So I get excited with the idea that ‘ye to bahut challenging hai, daraawana hai.’ I don’t know how it will work, what lies ahead for me when I do such parts. But what is interesting is that the kind of love and the kind of understanding the audiences have for cinema right now,

June 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 33

for actors, it’s incredible. I don’t know if I can say this, but I do get a lot of love for the work that I do.

That is well-deserved too, as you are a treat for cinema buffs to watch and your name also adds that credibility factor to any project that you do today. Does this play on your mind when you’re choosing the next project or do you just accept a project if it’s being offered by a certain production house or a filmmaker? There are a few checkmarks. Of course the script has to work for you, the character has to be exciting for you. The makers, if they’ve done work that you admire then you know that you’re secure. Because it can’t give wrong notes if the makers are somebody that you admire, and respect and they have artistic acumen. So, all of these factors come into play. And at the same time, now that I have a little body of work, I try to do something slightly different than what I have done before. So, all these criteria are met before I say yes and there are a lot of scripts and it has been relentlessly busy for me for the last few years. Yeah, that’s where I am. I am actually in the thick of things right now. You could say I am thoroughly loving it.

What has been the game-changer for you?

It’s very funny that every new release that I have is spoken like it’s a game-changer for me. It happened with Gully Boy, it happened with She, it happened with Mirzapur, it happened recently with Darlings and I think now its Dahaad

Setting the benchmark a little higher with every outing, what was most exciting about doing Dahaad? The ensemble was a very exciting idea to work with. And it’s a cat and mouse chase and I’m very happy to be the mouse among three cats. So, I get to do my own little mousy things. I enjoy playing ball with other actors. And I manage to work with some of the best, so I thrive better when I’m working with actors that are very competent and very good and they bring a certain kind of game. And here you see like some of the best performances. I am speaking because I’ve seen some of their shows and I know, I am an admirer of these actors more than I am an admirer of my own work. So, I see the kind of artistic heft that these actors have brought on the show and its incredible what Sonakshi (Sinha) and Gulshan (Devaiah) and Sohum (Shah) can bring to the table.

What is the real Vijay Varma like? I have no idea. I don’t know, I just keep changing. But I’m not like any of the characters that I play. Being myself is the most boring thing, because as a person I’m not very exciting. I feel like these characters I play are far more exciting personalities than who I am. So, I find refuge in such colourful characters. So, I feel like ‘oh I have an interesting personality, Yes!’

Your fashion sense is quite sartorial too. So how much of it is ‘you’ in that and do you really enjoy it?

I do. I was a fashion baby when I

was a little boy. I enjoyed wearing my nice sweater while going to school. So I’ve been into it and I know that during releases particularly… a lot of eyeballs are on you, so I make sure that I try and put my best foot forward. So I try to be myself and what you see on the red carpet, what I’m wearing is completely me. I mean I have a stylist who works with me because there’s no way I can go to designers and curate with so much logistics. So yeah, I get a bunch of stuff, I look at it and I decide what to wear. And as soon as I put it on, if I’m comfortable I’ll wear it, if I’m not comfortable, out it goes. So, it’s as simple as that.

Would you say that you are exactly on the kind of career trajectory path that you’d thought for yourself when you first started?

No, not really. Like I remember when I was out of work, I had a lot of time to think about the graph that I wanted and none of that happened. So, I figured that I don’t have time to plan these things and I figured that the way of plans is failing in front of the universal plans, so I just go with the flow. You know, none of these shows that I do or the films that I do, I have control over once I have shot. Because I don’t know which one will come first. And I’ll do this first and then that first. Nothing happens that

way. It’s not in my control. So, what I do is I make the most of what I have in hand, and I have fun and then I forget about it, and I move on.

So what’s been your biggest takeaway?

I think patience is a very strong virtue that one needs to have for looking at a career as an actor. And the ability to face rejections. And these are the two things that I hold dear. Patience was really hard because like I had to wait patiently for a lot of stuff to come around. Even like a simple show like Dahaad, we’ve been with this for like two years and you know that it’s just around the corner once it comes. A project is not complete until the audience have seen it. So you have to be patient and you have to believe in yourself and not to lose hope.

So what’s on your wishlist?

I am actually doing everything that I’m wanting to do. So touchwood. I’m working with the filmmakers that I wanted to work with. I’m doing the roles that I never thought I could do. Because I’ve done some already and I’m shooting some already so in my mind there’s a lot of other stuff that I’m doing, variety of roles that I’m doing. So that’s the reason I’m not worried about the typecasting or any of these

34 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST June 2023 INTERVIEW
Itrytopushmyself.Itrytodoprojectsthatother boyswouldn’tdo.SoIgetexcitedwiththeideathat ‘yetobahutchallenginghai,daraawanahai’

things because I know that it’s just a matter of one different performance.

Any co-actors on the wishlist?

There’re a lot. I mean there are so many interesting actors that I’ve not worked with. Although I got to meet and do a little bit of scenes with Tabu, but I want to do a full-fledged something with her. She’s incredible. I really like Ranbir Kapoor, want to do something with him. I always wanted to work with Irfaan but voh nahin ho paaya. Yeah I guess, everybody who’s a fab actor, I want to work with them.

Where do you draw all that restlessness or whatever that your characters require, from? How do you internalise something that is so layered, each time?

I think you just get into a state of mind of the character. Like if we say, he’s worried about getting caught, is he the person who shows it, is he the person who hides it? What does he do when he’s anxious? So these are the questions you prepare as an actor and then you figure out the root. Map

out what are the qualities of this person. And I enjoy understanding psychology so then those are very good guidelines if you just understand little bit of psychology, if you get a little bit about it. And I also consult a therapist for characters which are mentally unstable. So that means a lot of consultations have happened there?

Yeah (laughs), and also one of the feedbacks that I received after the show is out, I want to hear from the therapist if the portrayal was correct and I get to hear some incredible insights about what they observe.

Which one has been the most challenging for you as an actor?

I think each character brought in its own challenge. Darlings was challenging because it was a very interesting character in a very difficult situation. And you had to use every bit of your imagination and your body and your voice and everything to kind of portray a certain kind of… you know he’s beaten, he’s under the influence of substances, alcoholic. So many things going. So, I wanted to inculcate everything and

create a whole personality. And with Dahaad, it’s been a completely different exercise. It’s been more studying, more dissecting the mind more than anything else, because it’s his mind which is the most critical thing about this character. His mind is everything.

So do you take the character back home or can you disassociate immediately? I imagine that I disassociate but they have their own way of looking around.

What are your other upcoming projects?

There’s a bunch of stuff which is cooking right now. I’ve finished some, I’m shooting some. There are some at the stage of final touches before release. So, we have maybe 2-3 projects lined up this year.

And finally, what are your three reasons to watch Vijay Varma in Dahaad! Because I’ll make you smile. That’s it (laughs).

Palak Tiwari

GETS CANDID ABOUT HER LIFE CHOICES IN AN EXCLUSIVE TETE-A-TETE WITH AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE

WHAT’S THE HEADSPACE LIKE NOW THAT YOU’VE MADE YOUR BIG DEBUT AND HAVE BEEN GETTING MUCH LOVE FOR YOUR ROLE TOO?

I’m ecstatic! I think this is something that you look forward to your whole life, especially when you want to be an actor. It’s been a few weeks since and it’s been a fun time

and it almost feels like a birthday. Everybody’s congratulating you and you get so many messages and so many people come to celebrate, and it really feels like a birthday, but it’s even more special than a birthday. So yeah, it’s a great feeling.

YOU CAME IN WITH QUITE A BANG WITH THE SONG ‘BIJLEE

INTERVIEW
Y

BIJLEE’ BECOMING AN INSTANT HIT AND NOW IT’S GOING FORWARD WITH THIS FILM. SO DO YOU SEE YOURSELF FOLLOWING A PARTICULAR PATH THAT YOU HAD PERHAPS PLANNED FOR YOURSELF OR TAKING THINGS AS THEY COME?

I wouldn’t say that I’ve ever had a pre-decided or a pre-ordained career graph. I’ve never intended to follow like a straight line and always sort of done my own thing. I’ve always sort of figured things out and maneuvered it as things have come my way and I think I’m going to continue doing that. I don’t like to put too much thought into it. I like to go with the heart.

BUT DID YOU HAVE ANY CAREER GRAPH IN MIND WITH THE KIND OF ROLES THAT YOU WANT TO DO?

The way I think of it is - if I curtail myself into ‘oh these are the kind of roles that I want to do’, I’ll never be able to find out what I’m actually good at. Sometimes you don’t know actually what your potential is. Sometimes you do a role, you’re like ‘oh I’m good at it, I didn’t know that I could do something like this’. Which is why I don’t want to curtail myself at all right now. I just want to try everything that comes my way. And yeah, my main goal, I would say, my priority, something that takes paramount importance above everything else is just doing work that my family loves and can watch.

YOUNGSTERS YOUR AGE ARE STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT

WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY WANT TO DO, BUT THERE’S SO MUCH CLARITY IN YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS…

I get to hear this a lot! But frankly speaking, I feel like an imposter. Because I don’t really have that much clarity, I’m not that decisive as a human being. I’m extremely indecisive. I’m all over the place. Still at times, I feel very petulant for my age. But I feel like the only place where I am decisive is here, because I have always been sort of clear in the fact that this is what I want to do, and this is what matters the most to me. And once you get that in your head, nothing else matters. I try not to focus on little things which is like what sort of roles I want to do and all that. I just like being on a set and I want to for as many days of my life as I can.

HOW WAS IT WORKING IN YOUR DEBUT MOVIE WITH SALMAN KHAN? WAS IT UNNERVING AND WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST TAKEAWAY WATCHING HIM ON SETS?

I feel like that experience for me was fraught with learning experiences and learning instances. There was so much that I picked up from him. I say this a lot, but I feel like a sponge. I was just soaking up all the information around me because that moment for me was enriched with so many things. There were so many truly successful and truly experienced actors surrounding. I had so many people to look at. But about Salman Sir, I feel like the discipline that he had in terms of, even if he is sick, it doesn’t matter. I mean in the movie there’s a line that goes, “power nahi will-power”. And I feel like that’s actually him in real life. He could be extremely, severely ill, but he’ll still show up on set simply because he loves what he does so much. And the way that he treats everybody on set and how relaxed he is as an individual and how

…I’VE LOST THE ABILITY TO HAVE CRUSHES I FEEL (LAUGHS). NOW I HAVE LIKE TALENT CRUSH ON PEOPLE LIKE ‘OH MY GOD THIS PERSON IS SO TALENTED’ BUT I DON’T REALLY HAVE ‘OH MY GOD THIS PERSON IS SO ATTRACTIVE’. I DON’T KNOW WHY; I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!

nonchalant he is. You’ll never look at him and think ‘oh he thinks he’s a star.’ He’s so grounded. I think you learn a lot when you look at him.

PEOPLE HAVE LOVED YOUR TRACK OF MUSKAN, BUT PEOPLE HAD HIGHER EXPECTATIONS FROM THE MOVIE OVERALL…

I feel like cinema is so subjective. What is absolute brilliance to some people could be ‘meh’ to others. And that’s fine. That’s how it’s been since the dawn of time. And from what I’ve heard, people have liked it and people have enjoyed it. I think the people that Salman Sir had in mind, whom he wanted to cater to, which were children and family, they really enjoyed. And I think that was our target audience and I think he hit the nail on head with that. But in terms of all of us, I am not even looking at my solo appreciation. Because I know how hard that man

worked, Salman Sir. And I know how hard everyone worked. So, if you’re telling me that it’s been underappreciated, or people aren’t liking it, actually that hurts me because I know how much love we gave it. And I think all of us actors, we just have to come together to form something which is much bigger than us. And for us it was this film, so I don’t think it’s about solo appreciation but its more about how people are perceiving the film and the film has found acceptance with its target audience. And I think that’s what matters most to me.

WHILE GROWING UP, WHOSE POSTERS DID YOU HAVE IN YOUR BEDROOM? WAS IT SALMAN KHAN?

It was actually Zayn Malik. I had like a wallsized poster of Zayn Malik in my room. I remember the marketing of that poster was like, ‘Zayn real height in a poster’ and it took up

June 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 37
“ “

one whole wall. And I remember I’d kiss him good morning during my school days and I really thought he’s going to be my boyfriend someday. But I was 12. But after that, not really. After that I’ve lost the ability to have crushes I feel (laughs). Now I have like talent crush on people like ‘Oh my God this person is so talented’ but I don’t really have ‘Oh my God this person is so attractive’. I don’t know why; I don’t know what happened. I don’t know if this is my body telling me that I’m going to be celibate for life. But that’s what it is.

FROM HAVING THE POSTER TO BEING A POSTER GIRL YOURSELF...

I wouldn’t say that I’ve reached that sort of caliber yet. I mean I would want to someday. Everybody does right. But I don’t think I’ve done enough work in my life to have that yet. But yeah, hopefully someday. Someday I would want to be somebody’s Zayn Malik, why not?

HOW ARE YOU WHEN NOT FACING THE CAMERA - INTROVERT, EXTROVERT, PARTY PERSON?

I feel like I’m an extrovert for sure. I think that shows very clearly. But I am very conspicuously an extrovert, my friends sort of get tired of me sometimes because of how I’m like ‘let’s go, let’s do this, let’s do this’. But I think I’m a very low-key person. You know even partying and all I do, very, very occasionally. All my friends are stepping out and I’ll be a complete loner sitting at home, that’s when I’ll go out partying otherwise, I’ll be sitting at home, playing cards with my friends. I love playing dumb charades, playing badminton, playing Nintendo with my brother. Stuff like that. Like I like being with my family, being with my friends and just staying in my hall and just gossiping. That’s my

favorite pass-time.

WHAT ARE YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS? WE KNOW YOU HAVE THE VIRGIN TREE WHICH IS A SANJAY DUTT PRODUCTION… THAT SOUNDS VERY INTERESTING. Yes, thank you. I do have that. I have scheduled that up. And I have also wrapped a film with Pen Productions and that was also a huge honor to be a part of. That was actually the first movie I ever shot. It’s a remake of a South film and I was very, very excited to be a part of it. And I really love my character in that film. Actually, both these films have been varying with each other. So, I’m very excited.

WHAT IS THE ONE BIG TAKEAWAY AND LEARNING YOU HAVE FROM YOUR MOM – ACTRESS SHWETA TIWARI?

I feel like I could go on enumerating the sort of things that I’ve learnt from her as a person. I think everything she is she has inculcated into me. And consciously or subconsciously I think I’ve taken everything that she is, and I’ve tried to make it myself. Because I am so in awe of the person that she is. And yeah, as mother and daughter sometimes we argue, and I think that’s the most common with all motherdaughter relationships. And especially since we’re very similar in talking. So, we do have arguments, but there is not one singular person that I admire more than I admire her. So, there is not just one thing that I can pinpoint. It’s just her as a person.

DO YOU GET ANY TIPS FROM HER IN TERMS OF STAYING GROUNDED BECAUSE ALL THE FAME CAN BE A LITTLE OVERWHELMING?

I FEEL LIKE WEARING WHATEVER I WANT, AND I WEAR WHATEVER I WANT. AND MY MOM’S OKAY WITH IT AND THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS. ALSO, IN TERMS OF EVERYTHING ELSE, I REALLY AM SUPER UNBOTHERED

I agree it can. But with the adulation people have for my mom, I feel like I 100 percent agree with it. And I’m a 100 percent blinded also. But nothing beats the adulation and the reverence that I have for her. Because to me my mom is like the best. I’m obsessed with my mother. I’m obsessed with Shweta Tiwari. Like I can’t get enough of her. But I would also say that she’s the person who leads with example. And I’ve never seen her get swayed by the attention that she’s getting or swayed by how famous she is. And this is something which she never had to teach me; this is what I saw my whole life. It’s that no matter how adored you are outside of your house, you come back to your house and you’re a mother, you’re a daughter and that’s where it ends.

THERE’S A LOT OF PRESSURE ON YOU WITH THE KIND OF FOCUS AND LIMELIGHT ON YOUR PERSONAL LIFE. LIKE YOU KNOW YOU’RE OUT WITH IBRAHIM (ALI KHAN) AND THAT GETS SPOKEN ABOUT. YOU STEP OUT IN A DRESS AND THAT GETS WRITTEN ABOUT…

I try not to think about it a lot. Of course they say things about whatever I’m wearing. But at the same time, I’m young. I feel like wearing whatever I want, and I wear whatever I want. And my mom’s okay with it and that’s all that matters. Also, in terms of everything else, I really am super unbothered. Because I feel like a lot of it is just made up so I try and I’m like ‘okay, yet another day’. I’m so used to it now; it doesn’t even phase me. So, I just go on with my day living my life.

On a musical highSANAM

HOW DID YOU ALL START AS A BAND?

Musicband Sanam first burst onto the music scene with their recreations of old classic Bollywood numbers and soon their cover songs and catchy originals saw them being catapulted to instant fame and popularity with music lovers across! The band’s one of recent tracks ‘Aur Iss Dil Mein’ had them ditch their romantic image and saw them in neverseen-before rugged avatars and doing action sequences. In between their touring, and the release of their latest track ‘KyaHuaTeraWaada’, we caught up with the fab four - Lead VocalistSanam Puri, Drummer - Keshav Dhanraj, Lead Guitarist - Samar Puri and Bass Guitarist - Venky S for this exclusive interview where they talk about their musical journey and reveal some fun facts. Excerpts:

Sanam Puri : Samar, Venky and I formed a band in school, when we were in Indian School Muscat. After shifting to India, Samar and I moved to Delhi, Venky moved to Bengaluru. Venky met Keshav in college and started a band of their own, while Samar and I explored music in Delhi. I was a part of a few bands in Delhi. When we finally moved to Mumbai in 2009, Keshav had also shifted from Chennai. Venky was the one who connected us. After our first jam, we connected really well and have never looked back since. Venky joined the band during the finals of a contest we took part in called Supastars (by Times Music). We have been making music and exploring life together since then.

WHAT WAS THE GAME-CHANGER FOR YOU?

Keshav Dhanraj : I think the biggest change for us was the decision to do renditions when we were focused on only doing original music. The idea was just to reach out and showcase what we as a band had to offer musically. But it turned out to really touch so many hearts. We never expected to make such a big difference to people’s lives. Once our renditions started making an impact, the entire industry started to shift to renditions. So we are proud of what we did with this decision. We also didn’t realise what a big emotional connect this is when we travel abroad for shows. You have Indian origin families who have lived most of their lives abroad, who get so emotional when they hear some

of these old songs that their parents or grand-parents used to constantly listen to, but this time it’s presented to them in a more modern but easy listening package.

YOUR NEW TRACKS ‘AUR ISS DIL MEIN’ AND ‘KYA HUA TERA WAADA’ HAVE YOU GUYS IN A NEVERSEEN-BEFORE AVATAR, WITH ALL THE RUGGED LOOK AND ACTION SEQUENCES, WHAT PROMPTED THE CHANGE FROM YOUR ROMANTIC IMAGE?

Samar Puri : There are two different sides to this. Firstly, this is something my brother Sanam wanted to do for a long time. Contrary to what you all might think, he has always connected with this stylish but dark vibe. So it was only a matter of time before we tried something like this. The second is the fact that both these songs (in the genre we picked) call for something dark and stylish. So it worked out perfectly. It definitely took a lot of effort to pull something like this off in the little time we had in between our crazy live show schedule. But while shooting, it was actually very comfortable to get into character for all of us. Playing these characters was easier than what we do in our other renditions.

TELL US MORE ABOUT CREATING ‘KYA HUA TERA WAADA’?

Samar Puri : Sanam had come up with a guitar riff that eventually set the tone and vibe for this rendition. We didn’t plan to do this song along with ‘Aur Iss Dil Mein’. As the plan for the previous song was being made, this sort of fit perfectly. So we decided to club both songs together. The fight sequences were really new

INTERVIEW

and fun for us. We did end up with a few bruises, but the over-all experience was amazing.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE USP OF YOUR BAND?

Venky S : Honestly, there are a lot of things we do that makes us unique. But if I had to pick one, it would be the simplicity of our music. People find it easy to listen to and with Sanam’s unique voice, our arrangements tend to really resonate with our listeners. Easy listening, feel good sort of music.

WHAT’VE BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES ALONG THE WAY?

Sanam Puri : We have faced so many challenges along the way. Some REALLY BIG ones which we would rather not talk about. That’s a part of life I guess. But the fact that we have stuck together through thick and thin, makes it easier for us to deal with newer challenges that we find ourselves in. One constant challenge we keep facing is the fact that we are a self-made, independent band. So, many people underestimate us. The decision to do things our own way, on our own terms was so that no one can control us or our success. The power of that freedom is everything! The growth is slower but steady and stronger than what we could have imagined.

WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON THE BOLLYWOOD VS INDIE SCENE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY? DO YOU THINK BOLLYWOOD SINGERS HAVE IT EASIER?

Keshav Dhanraj : Well, Bollywood is an established industry. So it is harder for independent artists to reach out in comparison. A lot of independent artists move to Bollywood later, when they see a path to success there. But honestly, with social

media and the way things are now, you can literally reach out to the world by releasing songs from your own house. If you see some Punjabi artists and also many rap artists, some of them have a bigger reach than many Bollywood singers. So I guess both have their own advantages.

DO ALL OF YOU ALWAYS AGREE, ARE THEIR CREATIVE DIFFERENCES AND HOW DO YOU FINALLY DECIDE ON THE MUSIC AND THE NOTES?

Venky S : We don’t always agree on ideas. We all have our own unique styles. I think it all boils down to love and respect. We understand that all our individual efforts eventually go into make the band and the song sound good. It’s not the ego that drives us. So letting go of an idea if everyone else thinks it doesn’t sound good, isn’t that big a deal. We move on to the next idea. Arguments and disagreements are a part of life when you have four different minds working on the same thing. How we deal with it is the most important. We use this as a way to keep our music fresh.

WHOSE MUSIC INSPIRES YOU ALL THE MOST?

Sanam Puri : I normally don’t like to listen to music when I am composing. I like my ideas to be new and not heavily inspired by something I heard recently. When I do listen to music, I love listening to instrumentals and music composed by a Japanese composer, for games.

DO YOU FEEL THAT MUSIC IS MORE ABOUT MARKETING AND THE MUSIC VIDEOS THAN JUST THE ART-FORM?

Keshav Dhanraj : With marketing you can reach out to a larger audience. By playing the same song repeatedly, you can get people addicted to a song as well, but there is a limit to this. Once you stop marketing it, the song becomes really short-lived and

eventually dies out. When you make good music, your songs live on. People add them to their playlists and listen to them for years and years. It becomes a part of their lives and a part of their story. These songs pass the test of time. Marketing will help them reach more people for sure but eventually, the art speaks for itself.

HOW HAS LIFE CHANGED OVER THE TIME, ESPECIALLY WITH FEMALE FAN FOLLOWING AND ALL THE ADULATION?

Samar Puri : Some of the struggles in life have eased out for sure. But as people, our core values haven’t changed much. We are still the same in many ways. Yes we are more comfortable in life now and are growing into a new phase now. We are grateful for having such a strong, sensible and loving fan base. They have supported us right from the start. We are able to do sold out concerts across the globe because of them. This is a rush every time, but once we get back home to our families, we are back to being ourselves again. It’s true that money and fame bring out your true colours. So it’s important for us to have our core values set in life and not let anything else change that.

YOU HAVE TOURED EXTENSIVELY, SO WHICH CONCERTS HAVE BEEN MOST MEMORABLE?

Venky S : We are fortunate to be able to travel to so many beautiful places and perform. All our concerts are memorable in their own way. Like we had just performed in the middle of the Agafay Desert, Marrakech (Morocco) - that was surreal. Israel was a unique experience - In fact, our November gig is already sold out this year. We’ve also had fantastic experiences in Maldives, Mauritius, the Netherlands, and Suriname - I cherish my interactions with the Indian diaspora and try digging deep to learn about their experiences of being part of unique cultures in these parts of the world. Growing up in Bur Dubai in the 90s and attending school at Our Own (OOEHS) and Indian High School (IHS, Dubai) makes every concert in Dubai especially memorable for me. Seeing a desi crowd (especially old schoolmates and their families) mix with Arabs and a global audience who like our music becomes a true celebration. After Singapore and Malaysia, we look forward to our upcoming tour of South Africa at the end of May ‘23.

Masterstrokes!

CELEBRITY MAKEUP ARTIST AND CEO OF Z HAUS, ZEENAT JAFFER TALKS TO AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE ABOUT RULING THE ROOST AS ONE OF THE MOST RENOWNED AND LEADING NAMES IN THE MAKEUP INDUSTRY!

Zeenat Jaffer

WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED?

The industry was very different when I first started. I am talking about 15 years ago when Dubai wasn’t what it is today, there was no influx of social media and whatever went on backstage in the entertainment industry was kind of very secretive, in the way that the hair stylists and makeup artists weren’t really recognized brands or well-known faces the way they are today! Also there was a huge gap, a great divide between high-end luxury beauty brands and brands for cinema and stage, primarily for the camera that wouldn’t sell off store, and the regular products being sold off at smaller drugstores. So there were no in-between beauty product brands.

SO WHAT BROUGHT ABOUT THAT BRIDGING OF THE TWO EXTREMES?

I think all of this started changing when the camera went from the normal to HD. And the cinematic makeup needed reworking, as it needed to be kind of toned down and brought to more natural looking as against looking heavily made-up! Also celebrities started endorsing various brands and bringing them to the front with a chain of brands like a

A popular and much-respected go-to name for makeup when it comes to fashion shows, destination weddings, awards events, commercial shoots, music videos and several film and TV related work, Dubai-based Zeenat Jaffer, Owner and CEO of Z Haus has worked with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. So, it does come as a surprise when she confesses that being a celebrity makeup artist was never a childhood dream or an ambition. Instead it was a natural flair that turned into a passion and then a full-fledged profession only post marriage. And even then, instead of opting the well-trodden path and a much easier option of opening a salon, post pursuing a course in London, she decided to focus only on the makeup. And having made up her mind then, there’s been no looking back for the celebrated makeup artist whose expertise spells an illustrious journey of 15 years as a professional now. Self-assured, confident and charming, Zeenat looks radiant, as we catch up with her at a café. And in between juggling her professional commitments and her mommy duties, the much-in-demand artist shares some interesting insights into her work and headspace. Excerpts:

BUT YOU DID NOT OPT FOR THE TRIED TESTED ROUTE AS A MAKEUP PROFESSIONAL?

That’s right. Instead, I opted to work towards combining academics and bringing the backstage and these unsung heroes to the front! So, rather than working on just a payment per project basis, I started working towards creating a visibility for the artists, where we would work on barter and other collaterals where instead of just paying us, they would acknowledge us in terms of having our logos displayed. I was among the first ones to do that in Dubai and there’s been no looking back. I started with small events that led us to bigger projects including promotional tours for all the movies that came here, right from Krishh 3 to Bhoothnath to Highway and then even the awards events. Not just here, we started getting work from Mumbai too! Our logo presence made quite an impact and we became the go-to people. We were the pioneers and it’s so nice that so many did the same thing after us. It was like we created a trend to celebrate and win. It became a great platform for newbies too, as they got

54 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST June 2023
MAC or Sephora that helped bridge that gap.

to learn, experience and network too from awards events to fashion shows to destination weddings. From the academy license we moved that to an online license to teach. And when it came to destination weddings, we don’t just take care of makeup but offer ancillary services like ironing, and even masseuse contracts. We’ve inspired a lot of people and I think we were in the right place at the right time too, because Dubai became the hub for shoots as it was cost-effective and offered great aesthetics! I think we did the first videos for Badshah, Guru Randhawa, Yo Yo Honey Singh and for a lot of singers as well. We did Dabangg Tour as well, and all our associations and collaborations carried our logos too. So, yes, that’s how it all came into being for me!

WHAT’S THE VISION AHEAD?

We’re looking at starting some of our setups in Mumbai and Delhi as well. Everyone is in the ‘shaadi business’ and so many of our fashion shows and Bollywood is over there so I think that it makes sense for us to want to tap into that market.

CELEBRITIES CAN BE VERY UNPREDICTABLE. SO HOW DO YOU HANDLE THAT KIND OF PRESSURE ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO WORKING WITH MULTIPLE ARTISTES WHO COME WITH THEIR OWN TEMPERAMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS?

It is a very good question because if you go in with a mindset that ‘I do makeup this way, take it or leave it and this is my signature style’, it’s not going to work. This would only work with bridal salons where they have their particular signature style! ‘Take it or leave it’ approach doesn’t work with celebrities. We’ve worked with celebrities who keep repeating us each time they are here, like Kanika Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh, Neha Kakkar. And the reason for that is because we’re willing to listen. Half the challenge is understanding their requirement. Just learning makeup application techniques from YouTube tutorials isn’t enough. It needs to be backed with a thorough knowledge of color theory, makeup demographics and there is actually a whole science behind it. When a celebrity is preparing to appear, they need to be confident about how they look or they get trolled too. So it’s very important that you listen very carefully when they tell you what they’ve been using, the brands they work with, products they prefer, how they like their makeup and what works for them. What Instagram sells you isn’t what is required for the celebrity. Time management is of key importance, also you can’t be unhygienic, confused or nervous! You’ve got to understand what the celeb wants and then be ready to

work your magic!

IS WORKING IN DUBAI MORE OF A CHALLENGE BECAUSE OF THE VARIATIONS YOU SEE IN THE DIFFERENT SKIN TYPES CONSIDERING THERE ARE EXPATS HERE FROM ALL ACROSS THE WORLD? So this goes back to academic part which if you’ve studied well, then you already know what works for different skin types. Also, you’ve got to know what’s going to work in which temperature, on what kind of skin. Like, on Caucasian skin, colors really change on their faces. A little bit looks like a lot, but it’s very different for a dark skin.

WHICH SKIN IS THE MOST CHALLENGING TO WORK IN TERMS OF GETTING THE TONES RIGHT?

I think Caucasian to be honest and next is Scandinavian. Because we have some of them with golden eyelashes. So you got to have the right grey mixture into the brown and you can’t go black and all of that.

DO YOUR TRAVELS HELP IN THERE?

Yes definitely! I think it makes a big difference. Because I’ve travelled so much and lived in so many countries, I’ve gotten an idea of different ways of living cultures. It opens up your mind to be more accepting of different ways. If you have one rigid way of looking at things, then it will affect your work. Travelling makes you versatile and gives you a healthy exposure in life too to broaden your mind. I think Dubai gives you all that right here. It’s very cosmopolitan and you mix up enough with people to understand that their ethnicity and skin types make them have their own requirements. So, your mind generally has to be very open, very broad minded in makeup as well.

WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR BEGINNERS?

I would honestly advise them to be as authentic as possible. Work on your listening skills for clients’ requirements. Be thorough professionals, get your licenses. Follow the contracts. Being bilingual is a great asset. These things are tools that will help you get out there better.

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR COOL ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE ARE BIG EVENTS AND YOU ARE MANAGING YOUR MAKEUP ARTISTS, PLUS THERE ARE CELEBRITIES, THEIR MANAGERS, ORGANISERS… DOESN’T IT GET CHAOTIC?

Yes, it can get hectic. But you do need to take a break every now and have your spiritual moment to be mentally strong and prepared for these situations. Sometimes it can be very tiring and it can burn you out very quickly. I am very spiritual, so I think that helps me from having a nervous breakdown (laughs). Also people who don’t know how to delegate are honestly in trouble. Trying to control everything and having that power trip will never let you grow healthy. The more you spread and share

the more you’ll grow as well.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST GAME CHANGER IN THE MAKEUP INDUSTRY?

I would say the social media and Sephora have been the biggest game-changers for sure. Sephora really bridged the gap between the professional and behind the scenes makeup and the luxury brands like the Dior and Chanel.

WHICH 5 TRENDS ARE TIMELESS ACCORDING TO YOU? Wing-liners, red lipstick, healthy glowing skin makeup, mascara and eyebrows.

WOMEN ALSO OFTEN COME IN WITH THEIR INSECURITIES AND SKY-HIGH EXPECTATIONS. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

I tell my girls that don’t be shy in talking about what can and cannot be done. We patiently explain what’s attainable and try to make the best work for them. I also suggest that if they want to feel more confident in their own skin, then try to be more consistent with your diet, with your inner beauty, with your affirmations and look at the bigger picture. Because life isn’t only about your face, life is bigger than that.

62 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST June 2023 FOOD REVIEW

Food

The cuisine is largely Indian with Desi-Chinese being one of their fast-sellers! The food definitely gets a big thumbs up from us. The lounge scores high on the taste-o-meter with almost every dish and the innovative mocktails that we tried making the cut. And the names of the dishes definitely make you want to acknowledge their creativity! Each name reflects an interesting element of the dish.

We kickstarted our culinary journey here with the starters and ‘You’re My Butter Half’ – Prawns tossed in butter with herbs, ‘Not Aloo-Wed to Skip This’ – a potato based starter and ‘Come to me baby’ – which is fresh baby corn marinated with Indian spices and topped with cheese, are our recommendations. Like the starters, for the mains too, we tried a mix of the veg and the non-veg. ‘Luck Se better Palak’ –simply put palak paneer, ‘You’re a reel catch’ which was fresh sea bream based dish, ‘Chilli biryani for the Rani’ – chicken biryani, and ‘Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate’ – a stuffed potato dish won our taste-buds.

The fresh ingredients, spiced to taste with a burst of flavours, and cooked to perfection, were consistent across all the dishes. The assorted breads straight off the oven, made the culinary experience more delightful as did the healthy orange flavoured dessert!

Creative, cooked-to-perfection and wellpresented in good portions, the dishes are a culinary delight for foodies.

Ambience

The place is buzzing and on weekends we would even recommend you to reserve a table ahead. The relaxed ambience reflective of the Bollywood pop-culture makes it a perfect dineout option for friends and family. The seating though not overly spacious is comfortable. We also quite liked their assortment of funky tablemats and glasses that showed a rather innovative streak.

Service

The delicious dishes were topped with a quick service time and prompt and friendly, yet courteous staff. They do help out with the recommendations and clearly know what will suit the palettes the most. The preparation time is quicker in the early hours than later in the night, which of course is highly dependent on the day of the week. Weekends are a packed affair at Haveli, so expect a little longer waiting time then.

Verdict

The central location is an added for the lounge. The LIVE music and young vibe make it an ideal spot for celebrations and night-outs with friends. Dining here is a fun experience that’ll have you coming back for more. The dishes are a treat for Indian cuisine lovers. It’s beautiful setting makes it perfect for a date night too.

FOOD DÉCOR

The veg dishes were just as flavorsome as the non-veg dishes, so just make sure you have enough appetite because the tastes will tempt you to have more!

OVERALL

Funky and quirky, this one will grab your imaginations

The place is perfect for fun dine-outs and partying with friends!

Riva Arora first made her big screen appearance in Imtiaz Ali’s Ranbir Kapoor starrer Rockstar. She then went on to win hearts as a child actor in several popular and acclaimed films and projects including Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019), Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020), Section 375 (2019), Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota (2018), MOM (2017), Bharat (2019), Kaali Khuhi (2020), and TVF Tripling Season 2 (2019), amongst others. Most recently the young actor and now popular social-media influencer grabbed spotlight starring in music videos and collaborating with Karan Kundrra and Mika Singh! Basking in the success and the popularity coming her way, the actress is unperturbed by a section of netizens who trolled her over the age difference. And as we catch up with the young star, she talks to us about taking it all – the good and the bad - in her stride and also reveals her long wishlist of directors and co-stars that includes working with her Vicky mamu again!

FROM WINNING HEARTS AS A CHILD ACTOR TO NOW SHOWING HER ACTING CHOPS AS A YOUNG STAR, RIVA ARORA TELLS AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE THAT SHE IS LIVING HER DREAM!

YOU HAVE BEEN FACING THE CAMERA SINCE YOU WERE A CHILD, SO DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO GROW UP TO BE AN ACTOR?

Yes, I always wanted to be an actress since childhood, it had always been my dream!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT BEING AN ACTOR?

Well, I love working with new people. I love working with amazing co-stars. I love playing different roles and feeling different characters, getting to know the character and I love new challenges.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHALLENGING ROLE SO FAR?

Well, I don’t think I’ve had any challenging role as such, but yes, URI: The Surgical Strike, it was the best role, kind of challenging but I loved playing that part. I loved being Suhana.

YOU’VE MADE QUITE AN IMPRESSIVE IMPACT WITH YOUR PERFORMANCES AS A CHILD ACTRESS ESPECIALLY IN URI AND MOM, HOW DID YOU HANDLE ALL THE FAME AND LOVE COMING YOUR WAY?

I basically love that so many people love and support me and appreciate my each and every role and I loved working with Sridevi ma’am and Vicky (Kaushal) mamu. It was a pleasure working with them and getting all the love from people all around the world. It’s just amazing. I feel so grateful and so happy and so blessed to have made this far and it’s just amazing.

INTERVIEW
FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST June 2023

BUT WHILE AS A CHILD ACTOR YOU WERE LOVED AND APPRECIATED SO MUCH, THE TRANSITION AS A YOUNG STAR BECAME QUITE A TALKING POINT. AS AN ACTOR, IS THAT UPSETTING?

Well, yes, it is kind of upsetting, but my mum never lets me read any comments. The fact is you have to grow up and it’s just a part of life. I always focus on the love part more than the hate part because if people hate me there are many more lovers, many more people that love me and support me. So, I’m really happy and grateful because 11 million people love and support me and I’m grateful to each and every one of them.

DO YOU THINK PEOPLE FIND IT DIFFICULT TO ACCEPT CHILD ACTORS IN A NEW IMAGE?

Well as far as I know, I don’t think so. Because as a child actor, when you’re a child you’ll obviously grow up and if a child actor’s dream is to become an actor, then when they’ll grow up they’ll obviously become an actor.

ON WHAT BASIS DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR

PROJECTS? WHAT’S YOUR CRITERIA? Well, I let my mom handle that. It’s her department. What she looks out for a role is mainly that it should be a good project and she loves to get me interesting roles and even I love playing new and different challenging roles. So that’s the only criteria we have.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS. My upcoming projects are Milenge Jannat Mein, Sundarban Ki Sundari, Constable Gir Pade, and the movie titled Candy where I play the titular lead role and it is going to be directed by Shantanu Ray. I also have one music video ‘Haveli Pe’ to be produced by Jagnen Upadhyay Sir where I’m paired with Vidit Sharma of Roadies fame and it will be directed by Asif Silavat sir.

DO YOU FEEL THE PRESSURE OF KEEPING UP WITH THE SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS? No, because I always do my own thing, and I enjoy what I do, without the pressure to prove anything to anyone!

WHEN NOT ACTING, WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING?

Well, I enjoy studying a lot. I study everyday and when I’m not shooting, I love going to the gym. I exercise and I love swimming and playing badminton as well. So that’s what I do when I’m not shooting.

ANY STARS OR DIRECTORS ON YOUR WISHLIST? Among directors I would love to work with the ones I’ve already worked with again like Aditya Dhar sir, Ravi Udhyawar sir and Tejas sir because I have worked with all the best directors, and I would love to work with all of them again. And on my wishlist I also have directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Karan Johar sir and Rohit Shetty Sir, Mani Ratnam sir, Rajkumar Hirani sir, Anurag Kashyap sir, Imtiaz Ali sir, Neeraj Pandey sir, Farhan Akhtar, Rakesh Roshan, Rajkumar Santoshi, Vishal Bhardwaj sir, Anurag Basu sir, S.S. Rajamouli Sir, Ayan Mukherjee, R. Balki, Mohit Suri, David Dhawan sir, Zoya Akhtar ma’am and Aditya Chopra and Farah Khan as well. Well if you see the list is very big and it keeps going on and on because I want to work with each and every director. And the actors I want to work with… I’d like to work with Vicky mamu again and Varun Dhawan, and my all-time favourite, Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Kartik Aryan and new talents as well.
