e are still in Ramadan as you read this edition and preparing for Eid. The pious month of fasting, prayers and charity has seen the UAE ‘s ongoing initiative of providing 100 Million Meals across the world to the lesser privileged and Covid affected sections of society. The initiative was supported massively by Sonam Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and other celebrities across the world. On our cover is the climate warrior and Bollywood actor Bhumi Pednekar who shares us insights about what the lockdown taught her. “The biggest learning last year was that we give ourselves too much importance. We all feel like we are invincible and that nothing can affect us. And that we are above everything else. Well, we are not. I think the universe has given all of us a tight slap and taught us a big lesson,” she says. The parent company of Filmfare Middle East, Starz Media Inc, celebrated three years and came up with a coffee table book on the Most Influential Women 2021. Bollywood’s young and gifted music composer Amaal Mallik graced the event that had a group of enterprising women who were felicitated and honoured for their initiatives and contribution to the world. Actor Aman Varma who was in Dubai attended the event too, so did Soniya Mehra(Vinod Mehra’s daughter) who lives in Dubai. Turn to page 28 for more details of the event. In the local stories, we had Dubai denizens tell us about their Eid celebrations, that is somewhat sedate this time owing to the Covid situation. Pakistani actor Sarwat Gilani who I met in Dubai over an Indian fusion meal told me that is related to late Bollywood actor Parveen Babi. Read her interview to know how she is connected to the Raat Baaki actor of yesteryears. Keep to or pages to register for our talent hunt, Arab Asia Starz that is celebrating Season 2 this year. The digital talent hunt tracks down the best in fashion, beauty and entertainment and felicitates the best of you all! As we keep indoors and make social distancing a norm this season, here is a collective prayer of courage from us all to tide through the rest of the year and defeat a pandemic that has crippled the world. A prayer that we don’t pollute our real world or the world of twitter and social media with hate and angst but create a harmonious digital space lifting each other up. We are all facing the same enemy regardless of location, age, nationality and boundaries – here is to more kindness and compassion as we celebrate Eid! Eid Mubarak!

tourist would say that the best time to visit Dubai is during the winter months, for shopaholics it’s the Dubai Shopping Festival, but for a foodie (like me) – it just has to be the Ramadan! Getting my first taste of the lavish Iftaars here – and the mouth-watering delicacies they entail – I can’t wait to take in the sights, sounds and other delights of the upcoming Eid – the holidays, the sheer kurma and the Eidis. Of course for the movie-buffs and Bollywood fans, there’s also the promised Salman Khan cinematic Eid treat – Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai! Do DM us and share your reviews of the film - Top 2 would be featured online! In the meantime, while treating the tastebuds, I also indulged in the local flavours of the Middle East at the night bazaars as I added to my wardrobe the gorgeous kaftans,, Pakistani shalwars and several other quaint goodies. But among all this what truly had my heart was seeing the strength of faith resonate so beautifully among the believers. Grace for what has passed, Peace for what is, and Courage to face what comes ahead. A prayer for all, more so the Covid warriors. This, especially at a time when the world is grappling with the second wave of the Covid-19, which the UAE authorities here are tackling efficiently. Kudos for the efforts! Having stepped up on its vaccination drive, Dubai is going full throttle to ensure the well-being and safety of its citizens. With a distribution rate of 98.97 doses per 100 people, it’s well on its way to achieve the desired results too. There’s more happening in the city! Our Arab Asia Starz is back with its Season 2. Yes, the much-awaited digital talent hunt that had created quite a buzz when it was first launched last year is back with its platform to showcase upcoming talents from this region and their passion for Entertainment, Fashion and Beauty. Last year witnessed a mind-boggling participation and this year it only gets bigger!!!

HIGHLIGHTS

THE STARS GRACED THE 66TH FILMFARE AWARDS 2021

Amruta Khanvilkar opted for an Indo-Western look with a dramatic pleated red saree by Tasuvure. Her gelled back hair, smokey eyes and the minimal diamond jewellery elevated the look to perfection. Sara Ali Khan kept it icy cool in a blue tulle number by Aadnevik. Her voluminous look was topped with a messy ponytail, a pair of glittery heels and a light smokey eye. Taapsee Pannu, who looked like a dream on the red carpet, made sure her outfit was as bright as her night. The actor donned an ombre pink and mauve gown with a soft bow on the back by Zara Umrigar and finished it up with a headband and scrappy silver heels. Sanjana Sanghi made quite an edgy statement in her custom Amit Aggarwal creation. A structural piece in dull metallic grey, Sanjana was a breath of fresh air amidst the trail gowns and dramatic looks. Talking of trails, Divya Khosla Kumar turned up the heat in a mauve Atelier Zuhra gown. The embellished gown that turned into a feathered trail shone at the red carpet.

Tamannaah Bhatia in her Bennu Sehgal gown bedazzled everyone. The actor strutted like a million bucks in a princess gown, exuding her unmatched charm at the red carpet. Nora Fatehi made a fierce appearance in Georges Chakra and got all heads turning for her at the event. The lady opted for a golf metallic outfit and hit a hole-in-one with her minimal make-up, emerald jewellery and her undying sass. Sunny Leone sure loves white for her red carpet appearances and we’re not complaining. The stunner picked a L’mane number with poker straight hair, blush make-up and some diamond jewellery. Needless to say, she stole the show. Christmas arrived a little early for us, as a very merry Mithila Palkar turned up in a mistletoe green gown by Sharnita Nandwana for the night. Retro waves in her hair and minimal jewellery, she was a vision in green at the red carpet. Another break from the usual was Alaya F, who arrived wearing a Gaurav Gupta number. The blush pink short dress complemented her vibe and made her stand out in style on the big night.

HIGHLIGHTS

Whoever said men’s fashion is limited, hasn’t seen the Filmfare red carpet yet. The dapper Freddy Daruwala got heads turning in a jet black bandhgala by Manish Malhotra. With his black loafer and pulled back hair, Freddy rocked the fusion wear for the big night.

RAJAT BARMECHA

Our third host for the evening Maniesh Paul was both humour and style personified during the awards night. He opted for an all-black tuxedo with a contrasting scarlet bow tie to finish the look.

VARDHAN PURI

FREDDY DARUWALA

Our first host for the evening, Riteish Deshmukh added a bit of jazz to a classic tuxedo by Jewellyn Alvares. A crisp bow tie and the classic combo made the star shine bright. Talking of oomph, Vardhan Puri turned up in a quirky striped rose gold blazer with black pants for the night. He made the unconventional ensemble work to perfection. Cool and comfy, Rajat Barmecha kept it semi-casual in a black blazer and a t-shirt. He finished off his look with chunky white sneakers. We couldn’t keep our eyes off Pratik Gandhi in his all black tuxedo by Adani Creation. Vintage and striking, Pratik looked like a million bucks that night. It doesn’t get cooler than Jaideep Ahlawat casually walking down the red carpet in a well-fitted maroon blazer, a crisp white shirt and black pants. The star looked dashing in the ensemble topped with his ponytail. RITEISH DESHMUKH

PRATIK GANDHI

Sahil Salathia stood out in the crowd in his plaid-green suit with a white shirt. He accessorised the look with some funky jewellery and manicured black nails. We sure dug this OOTD. Amaal Mallik kept it classic in an all-black suit with his messy hair and beard. He looked quite charming walking down the red carpet. Next up is the man who defines men’s fashion for all age groups. Ayushmann Khurrana dropped yet another style bomb wearing an OS by OS suit. Working the velvet blazer like it’s meant to be, he sure was one of the finest dressed that night. Our second host for the night, Rajkummar Rao took the classic route in his Gaurav Gupta creation. A tailor-made tux with his unmatched charm, Rajkummar and his tuxedo were a match made in heaven.

DR. SANA SAJAN Director of American Aesthetic Medical Center

TREAT THINNING HAIR AMAAL MALLIK SAHIL SALATHIA

The American Academy of Dermatology states that the body normally sheds 50 to 100 strands of hair in a day. If you notice more, your hair may be thinning. Thinning hair can be linked to diet, nutritional deficiencies, age, stress, and most commonly, androgenetic alopecia, also known as pattern baldness. 1.HAIR TRANSPLANT SURGERY Modern-day hair transplant techniques like FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) are safe and minimally invasive. Healthy hair follicles are extracted either individually or from a strip of skin from the donor area of the scalp and transplanted into thinning or balding areas. 2. PRP (PLATELET-RICH PLASMA) THERAPY Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a 3-step treatment. The process increases blood supply to hair follicles and promote cell growth, stimulating natural hair growth. PRP is done up to 3 times, with a gap of 4-6 weeks. 3. LASER THERAPY Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) revives inactive hair follicles and stimulates new hair growth. A 650nm wavelength laser light irradiates photons into the scalp. Weak cells absorb them to re-energize hair follicles and promote growth of dense, healthy hair. Wearing the laser cap for 30 mins daily delivers promising results. 4. MICRO-NEEDLING A hand-held roller with tiny needles is rolled on the scalp, and creates pin-prick-sized wounds on the surface, that are painless and non-injurious. The body stimulates collagen production that enhances the strength and elasticity of hair and skin. This stimulates scalp circulation and new cell growth, providing a healthier environment for thicker hair growth. To be done with expert advice.

Please contact our medical experts at the American Aesthetic Medical Center. We provide some of the best treatment options for thinning hair customized as per your requirement. AYUSHMANN KHURRANA

On screen, she’s fighting patriarchy with her powerful roles, on social media she’s making the right noises for conserving the environment. Over our zoom call, I also meet the young, simple girl who loves doing make-up and likes to look good at all times. Clearly, there’s more to Bhumi Pednekar than meets the eye. “You know because of the roles that I do... I don’t get to glam up in my films. But in real life I’m so away from those roles or those characters that I play, I take out all my frustration on myself when I’m not in front of the camera. I love playing dress-up,” chuckles the actress. One wouldn’t have known that she’s as fond of make-up kits as she’s of method acting. The stark contrast between Bhumi’s on-screen and offscreen personalities makes her more real than most. Her candid replies make you aware she’s actually woke and not pretending to be so. Her relatability is her USP and the more you learn of her inspiring journey, the more your respect grows. Bhumi started off on a strong note with Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015), then went from one high to another in her career and five years later she’s reached that point where author-backed roles are being written for her. 2020 started off on a high as she received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics) for Saand Ki Aankh, along with Taapsee Pannu. And she closed the year with Durgamati, her first project where she’s the solo lead. The candid, witty, compassionate actress talks nineteen-to-the-dozen about making her way in a man’s world, surviving the lockdown, becoming a warrior for environmental issues and losing her heart to showbiz - that kind of explains the lack of a special someone in her life... Excerpts...

What are the biggest learnings of 2020?

That we give ourselves too much importance. We all feel like we are invincible and that nothing can affect us. And that we are above everything else, well, we are not. I think the Universe has given all of us a tight slap and taught us a big lesson that don’t mess with the basic running of the world. The year helped me become a humbler human being. Also since I spent so much time with my family, on a lighter note, I feel I’ve relearnt a lot of things about my sister and my mother and a lot of things about myself as well. Things that I thought I’m not capable of doing like cooking... I’d thought oh my God I’d never be able to cook... you get so busy with your career that you start feeling that if you ever have to stay home and do the household work, will you be able to manage? But I managed it really well. As I said, I learnt a lot about my sister’s work. Her law world was completely unknown to me. I have a newfound respect for her because I’ve always looked at her as just my younger sister. For the first time, I saw her as a professional and realised the amount of work she puts into it. I learnt a lot from my mum as well. My mum writes and we discussed it a lot. I walked down our family history. I learnt so much about my grandparents and my uncles and aunts. Like this time was tough, but it’s a period that I’m going to miss and I’m going to hold close to my heart. I’m already getting withdrawal symptoms. As much as I want to go shoot, nothing takes away from that, I’m already having withdrawals that I’m not going to have this for a long time again. 2020 has been a tough year. Losing a friend, a co-star, that was one of the most hard-hitting moments not just for me but for Sushant’s fans as well. And for so many people across the spectrum who’d worked with him. That was definitely

I think all actors today have become

quite woke about their

responsibilities towards society, which is good.

I feel happy that I’m

an actor at a time I can contribute this much

COVER STORY one of the toughest moments for me. Apart from that, there are so many families I know, who’ve lost their loved ones. The time is such that you’ve only been hearing about heartbreaking, brutal things that are happening around. People are losing their jobs… But there’ve been some good moments too. I have a couple of friends who’ve become parents. Also, we’re seeing some positive change in the way people are looking at things. The work I’ve been doing with the Climate Warrior campaign or with Abhyudaya Ashram is giving me immense joy. These were my guiding lights through the lockdown. The kids at Abhyudaya Ashram kept me afloat, they kept me rolling, they kept my competitive and ambitious side alive. Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare releasing was definitely a fantastic time for me. The kind of love the film got... the reviews the film got...

Durgamati was meant to release in theatres but then the world changed. How did you react when you came to know it’s going to have a direct-to-digital release? I’m going to be honest. I’m a consumer of the OTT platform. So I love all our OTT platforms. There’s path-breaking work happening on these platforms. But being a film actor, someone who is so used to seeing her

Durgamati is a genre breaker, to be honest. I have not seen myself do the things I’m doing in the film. There’s a lot of hard work that has gone into the film, it’s a conspiracy thriller, with a horror story. I enjoyed making the film because it’s a family entertainer. It’s not one of those horror films that you can’t watch 14 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST May 2021

I ’ve always maintained that Akshay Kumar has had the biggest influence in my career and in my life. I was fortunate that I did the film Toilet... with him so early in my career, so I learnt many things, professionalism, punctuality, mutual respect for everyone around, being happy, hard work... films release on the big screen and someone who loves the theatre-viewing experience, I had mixed feelings. I wasn’t sure, especially for a film like Durgamati because it is a spectacle. The film is extremely larger than life. Once you see the film, you’ll understand that it’s an experience. So I was a little confused. I’ve already had Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare that came out on a similar platform. The love that the film got was amazing. And that experience taught me that if you have a good film, it doesn’t matter what medium people watch it on. I’m glad that at least my film is reaching people in the same timeline that it was supposed to reach people earlier. I feel that films do get stale. Every film has a shelf life and you need to enjoy it then. We all move on with our lives. There is a certain amount of relevance and also the business needs to keep rolling. Besides, the kind of reach all our OTT platforms have is immense.

You worked with Akshay Kumar in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha but this time he did not act with you. How is he as a producer? I would say he’s more hands-on as a producer than he’s as an co-actor. He’s someone I keep learning from. I’ve always maintained that he has had the biggest influence in my career and in my life. I was fortunate that I did the film Toilet... with him so early in my career, so I learnt many things, professionalism, punctuality, mutual

respect for everyone around, being happy, hard work.... When I saw him take on the hat of a producer or a presenter, I realised that he is as involved. Be it the script sessions that we had, the post-production work that went into the film, he was constantly checking with me when we were shooting or with the director. He was completely up to date with whatever was happening on the set. And he has four films in a year. I was like how do you make time, how is it possible? I don’t know, he just has superhuman strength. I did not expect this level of knowledge and investment from him as he is so busy, but he

surprised me.

In your next project Badhaai Do, you’re teaming up with Rajkummar Rao for the first time. How excited are you collaborating with him and secondly are you going to miss one of your favourite co-stars Ayushmann Khurrana who was part of Badhaai Ho? I’m definitely going to miss Ayushmann. I think the chemistry that AK and I have is crackling. It just happens. You know whenever we speak to each other we’re constantly telling each other that we haven’t found that comfort elsewhere, even though I have had the opportunity to work with some

amazing co-stars. But me and Ayushmann, there is something special about what we do. And coming back to Rajkummar, he’s one of my favourite Indian actors. I thoroughly love his work. I’m nervous that I really have to up my game. He’s so good with comedy. I’ve met Rajkummar a couple of times in a professional space for Badhaai Do. He is such a nice guy, so sweet, so secure about his craft, that is something I really appreciate in a co-actor.

Tell us about the time you decided to become a climate warrior…

I can’t pinpoint that one moment that changed me. I feel it was inherent… I’ve had it since I was a child. I’ve always been bothered

I’ve always been bothered by the lackadaisical attitude people have towards our planet and how irresponsible we all have been... We were taught about planet conservation and the impact it would have in the future. But for us, the future felt like some 400 years later by the lackadaisical attitude people have towards our planet and how irresponsible we all have been. We’ve just not had the knowledge. We were taught about planet conservation and the impact it would have in the future. But for us, the future felt like some 400 years later. But that’s not the truth, it’s now. After I became an actor, my reach increased and I could actually formalise the work that I was doing. I brought it under Climate Warrior. The idea was to create as much awareness and do as much groundwork as possible. I’m extremely passionate about this. I think the day my parents named me Bhumi, subconsciously something went off in my head. I’ve been like this since then. Even in school, I was affected by the things that happened around me. I went vegetarian this year. And that’s one of the happiest things that has happened to me.

Apart from you, there are others in the industry who are doing their bit for environment. Whose efforts do you appreciate the most?

Shraddha (Kapoor) for sure. She’s a very woke voice for planet conservation, and for co-existing with other species. She’s quite compassionate towards the planet. Alia (Bhatt) too loves animals and is constantly posting about it. She has a property called Coexist that does some good work. And of course, Dia Mirza, who’s so devoted to the cause of the environment. She’s someone by whom I’m extremely inspired. Amitabh Bachchan too does telethons to raise awareness. INTERVIEW

Ensnaring your

soul with

song!

He is the maverick behind some truly soulful music in Bollywood. His recent work with Dua Lipa has catapulted Indian music to a world stage and he is laden with some great projects back home. With a childhood seeped into Hindustani classical music courtesy his grand-father, the legendary Sardar Mallik and being surrounded by Bollywood film music owing to his dad, music composer Daboo Mallik, a chat with Amaal Mallik meanders into lanes, by-lanes of memories, emotions and highs and lows of his life. Amaal was the star guest at the Most Influential Women event powered by Filmfare ME in Dubai and he wowed crowds with his rendering of songs. A chat with Amaal Mallik takes the longest to edit because it is multi-layered like him and fluid and unchartered like his music. Manju Ramanan chats up with the young composer. 26 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST May 2021

A SONG HAS ITS OWN DESTINY Songs come with their own destiny and some make it big and some don’t. I composed Koi Ishaara from Force 2 and gave my 3000 percent to the song but it didn’t do well. My young fans love it and connect to it but despite all the work put into it, poof, it was gone. A GOOD MELODY CONNECTS TO YOU When I make a song and get my friends, mom and dad to listen to it, I spy on their reaction. If it connects, my dad will usually hold his head in happiness. THE IMPORTANCE OF LETTING GO! I made a song called Tu mera Nahi on the concept of letting go. Be it relationships, songs or people, when I feel it is enough, I let go. Intuitively you know when a song is ready. It has to match these four pillars – Sound scape has to be good, it has to be modern and relatable, lyrics should be good and the melody, simple. It should make audiences feel something. MAGIC CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE! I composed Chale Aana in this house (my friend Emil Bhatia’s home in Dubai Marina). We had had a long night and I was in the wash-room when this song came to me. I called up the director of the film Kunal Verma and told him I had a song for him. I composed Roke Na Ruke Naina during my Himachal trip. I was 23 years old and 26 songs old and felt like a 35-year-old, burdened with too many things. I had to run away. I had just come out of the studio after recording Kaun Tujhe Yun Pyaar Karega and Shashank who directed Badrinath ki Dulhaniya met me and asked me for his song. I told him let me go away for a bit. Soon I was ready with Tu jo Nazron ke Saamne. I got the Filmfare award the next year! The song was edited out of the film but somehow made its way back because it fit the narrative. I cried when this happened. I usually never cry and take rejection well. A song does have its own destiny. SIMPLICITY IS THE TOUGHEST TO ACHIEVE I want people to sing my songs, hum them and keep them in their lives. That usually happens when a song is simple. The closer you are with yourself, you can achieve that. I assisted Salim Sulaiman who were into the laptops and technology but never left their Indian sufi roots. Across all their songs in Chak De, Qurbaan etc, they kept the essence of India alive. I am more drawn towards Hindustani music today. I learnt a bit but Armaan did his visharad. I feel that it is a bigger ocean and the notes

India hits, surprises the western world. WORKING AND NET-WORKING I have missed most success parties of my films and have arrived after the networking crowds have left. But I have had my family and some real friends in my life. I never became someone I was not. My mother often tells me that if I keep making music, when will I start living? I tell her I am living now. This is my life and it is music. THE MUSICAL FAMILY My grand-father on his death-bed, told my father that both of us, Armaan and I were musically gifted. My mother had already started guiding us, now dad geared up too. I was 14 when my grand-father asked me to produce a music album and I had no clue or means to do it. I didn’t know laptops, plug ins etc then. Today I still feel guilty that I didn’t have the knowledge then. Main Rahoon ya Na Rahoon was my tribute to him. My parents have done everything for us. They stayed together despite hardships and my mom used to say that it felt like they were waiting on a train platform and all trains laden with people passed them by without creating room for them. She once told me that she would be proud of me if the DJ at an event plays one of my songs without request. Recently she called me to tell me all songs were my songs. They both stepped back and let us shine. My dad is now getting back into music and my fans are telling me, I should compose like him! DEALING WITH SUCCESS I go to sleep if I am overwhelmed. From the age of 15-28 years I was angry at the world and was trying to prove a point that we have my dad’s DNA in us to make it big. After receiving a big award after Sonu ke Titu ki Sweety, I wasn’t happy internally. I had won 25 awards by then, my brother had become a star singer, we had the comforts we needed but I wasn’t happy. I realised that I needed to do lesser films, have yummy Andhra food, have a good night’s sleep. All that keeps your highs and lows balanced. I was getting negative by doing films to prove a point. I slowed down, said no to many projects (rejected 17 films for Saina). I stayed away from remix songs, told my mom that I don’t want to be DJ Amal but an AR Rahman. He did 40-50 songs in his career, all works of art. Numbers aren’t important, work is. A 100-crore film or 100 million likes doesn’t determine quality. INDEPENDENT MUSIC Though I can’t run away from being a film composer, there is a full-fledged independent music industry out there that I can always fall back upon. Armaan went global, Prateek Kuhad is

AT A BLACK-TIE EVENT I ARRIVED IN TORN JEANS AND A T SHIRT IN MY SMALL CAR. I HADN’T READ THE INVITE. WHEN I WAS DRIVING BACK, KIDS TORE OUT NOTE BOOK PAGES AND HOUNDED MY CAR FOR SELFIES AND AUTOGRAPHS. THE BIGGER SWANKY CARS AROUND WITH DARK GLASSES WERE BARREN !

so well known, so are Badshah, Honey Singh etc. During lockdown people consumed music. Lifafa is an amazing artist and so is Dheekshita Venkadesan. I am composing for projects for Hotstar, Amazon and Netflix too. Songs with lesser views on YouTube are streaming well with Jio Saavn, Spotify, Gaana etc. It is a good time for music. Most Influential Women 2021: A power-packed evening celebrating the empowered women of today!

Most Influential Women 2021 hosted by Starz Media on Wednesday (April 7) was an evening that had some of the most celebrated names and women of power gather under one roof! While being felicitated for their achievements and immense contribution to society, these super-women were also presented with a special collector’s issue - Coffee Table book that spoke about their success stories and celebrated their grit and determination. It was a double celebration as Starz Media turning three, as did Filmfare ME under them. Among those presenting the honors were Founder and Chairman Danube Group, Mr Rizwan Sajan, H.E. Sheikh Obaid bin Suhail Al Maktoum, and TV star and presenter Aman Yatan Verma. Also enthralling the audience with his live renditions was Bollywood’s ace music-composer Amaal Mallik.

INTERVIEW

Shooting straight

heart! from the

Fearless in her choice of roles, she’s a no-filter person when it comes to speaking her mind too! Having carved a niche for herself over the years, Shefali Shah earned her spot in the sun early on in her career even when facing the camera with some of the biggest names in the industry. Not the quintessential heroine, she has however wowed audience time and again with her power-packed performances. Earning accolades as DCP Vartika Chaturvedi in the Emmy winning show Delhi Crime to winning hearts in the latest OTT outing Ankahi which is a part of the anthology, Ajeeb

Daastaans, it’s easy to see why she’s hailed as one of the finest actresses of the industry. Shefali is in the midst of shooting for her medical thriller Human when we reach out to her. And in an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the talented actress gets candid about her journey, her choice of roles, directorial pursuits, Delhi Crime’s Emmy win and the changing audience perception towards women character actors

YOU HAVE COME TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH SOME VERY STRONG AND REALISTIC WOMEN CHARACTERS ON SCREEN. DO YOU NATURALLY GRAVITATE TOWARDS SUCH ROLES? I’m drawn to what a person thinks, feels, behaves… So yes, the strength of a role would attract me, but so would the vulnerability of another role. It’s not that I’ve made a conscious decision to do films which talk about really strong women. I have just done roles that really touched me, or hit me in my gut. They were a calling and I had to do them. DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THEM? Being a human I identify and relate with every single human complexity that there is and as an actor, the need to act comes from the fact that I can live many lives, live many characters which may or may not be like me. So it’s not a conscious decision to do a role which I can identify with. There might be a role that I can’t relate to at all, but that’s not going to stop me from taking it up. SEVERAL OF YOUR ROLES HAVE ALSO BEEN WAY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME AND VERY PROGRESSIVE… Like I said, I just do parts which hit me hard in my gut and call out to me. Whether they’re ahead of time or not, I’m lucky that I got films that were extremely progressive. I do make a conscious choice of what I want to do and if it does not attract me or consume me or satiate me... then I choose not to do a role and that’s exactly how I’ve worked all throughout.

TELL US ABOUT THE EXCITEMENT OF BEING A PART OF THE EMMY AWARD-WINNING SHOW DELHI CRIME. I was extremely proud right back when I was first offered the show and when we started to prep and shoot for it too. In fact, even Netflix picking up the show had come in much later. We had already made the show without knowing where it was going to be showcased or telecast, we didn’t even know about the Sundance premiere (Sundance Film Festival)! It’s one of those shows where everyone put in their heart, soul, blood, sweat just because they wanted to be a part of this and create it because we trusted the show and the director’s vision. And now when it’s won the Emmy, I’m more than over the moon as the show deserved it. It is a show I’m very proud of and winning the Emmy’s was a cherry on the sundae! OF THE ROLES YOU’VE PLAYED SO FAR, WHICH ONES HAVE BEEN THE MOST CREATIVELY SATISFYING AND THE ONES MOST CHALLENGING? Well, satisfying is a very difficult one because I’m never really satisfied with what I do. I always look back and I feel I fell short. Actually I hope I never get completely satisfied with what I do, because then the hunger to do it better or push myself, might not be as strong as it is right now. As far as challenging is concerned, honestly none of the parts I’ve done have been easy. But if you talk about the latest, it’s definitely Delhi Crime. It has been my most consuming, exhilarating, fulfilling experience. Personally it’s enriched me, but it’s also been my learning curve. Vartika is very dear to me.

that is what has changed or rather just opened the horizons for all actors. Earlier a character actor would’ve been restricted to playing a mother, a sister, a friend or a henchman or something like that. But today every character is as important. In fact, there is no lead character when you go to see, there’s an ensemble cast, which is commendable and great. It’s what we’ve been waiting for all this while.

WHATEVER YOU DO, HONESTY IS PARAMOUNT. VULNERABILITY IS IMPORTANT. I KNOW PEOPLE PUT UP A PROTECTIVE COVER AROUND THEM, AND MAYBE THAT’S A GOOD THING, BUT FOR ME, NO FILTERS HAS WORKED BETTER.

WHAT ARE THE CHANGES YOU’VE SEEN OVER THE YEARS IN TERMS OF THE ROLES BEING WRITTEN FOR WOMEN? In the 70s or so there were a lot of womenoriented films – Mamta, Aandhi, Aaradhna…- but then there came a lull where the heroine or the female lead was reduced to being arm-candy. Luckily that has changed in the last couple of years and there are roles being written for women, by women, there are female directors and there are women-oriented stories that people want to tell so that is a big shift. You see a lot of the shows on the OTT platform, they are women-dominant shows, women-dominant stories and that has been a complete boon for actresses and also age-wise. Earlier the shelf life of an actress was let’s say till she was 22-25, but that’s completely changed. Filmmakers are telling stories about women, who vary in their age groups. 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s.... it has nothing to do with the age, it has to do with how powerful the role is, the script is and how they want an actress and not just someone who will get the numbers rolling in at the box office or someone who’s just popular or who just looks really nice! There’s a far bigger requirement from women and its definitely challenging for me as an actor and a great place to be. DO YOU THINK THAT THE PERCEPTION TOWARDS WOMEN CHARACTER ACTORS HAS CHANGED AND THEY ARE FINALLY GETTING THEIR DUE? Yes of course, the perception of women has changed quite a bit. I feel that the perception of any kind of character has changed a lot. You know now it’s not just a box, the way it used to be earlier - a hero, a heroine, a character actor and a villain. Today, every single character gets its due. Every character, no matter how small, in terms of screen-time is important to the story and May 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 35

INTERVIEW

IT’S NOT THAT I’VE MADE A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO DO FILMS WHICH TALK ABOUT REALLY STRONG WOMEN. I HAVE JUST DONE ROLES THAT REALLY TOUCHED ME, OR HIT ME IN MY GUT. THEY WERE A CALLING AND I HAD TO DO THEM.

HOW HAS OTT CHANGED THE INDUSTRY AND FOR YOU AS AN ACTOR? The OTT has really opened doors, its opened horizons and the sky is the limit! It’s not driven by the BO collections, but by content; not driven by star-power, but by stories; driven by performances and it’s incredible. Personally, no other work has really opened floodgates for me in so many years like Delhi Crime has. I’m still waiting for the most incredible parts and by incredible I don’t mean that I want to be the quintessential heroine. I probably never will fit in, but I want to do parts which are powerful, which are strong and the OTT is really opened up those horizons! For actors, makers, writers, it’s another world altogether which is just amazing. This is the best time for all creative talent. YOU’VE ALSO TURNED DIRECTOR. WAS THAT ALWAYS ON THE WISH-LIST? I have been wanting to direct for a pretty long time and I had worked on scripts, etc. But during the lockdown obviously there was a lot of time to introspect and think about things we hadn’t thought of earlier. I realised that one of the things we took most for granted were the people we loved, and the closeness to them, to touch them, to meet them, to hold them, to talk to them, to sit face-to-face with them. To be able to see a smile without a mask. That is in fact where the idea for my short film came from. It’s called Some Day and if I had to tell you in one line what it is: If the disease doesn’t kill you, the distance will! At the same time, I wrote another script, and they’re both short films. Some Day is doing the festival circuit rounds, the second film is Happy Birthday Mummyji which we will talk about later some time. But

yes, it was something I always wanted to do, but wasn’t sure if I was ready to take over a responsibility of this kind. Making a film is taking the responsibility of your entire cast, crew… I wasn’t sure if I was capable of doing it, but the short film format was something I could carry off and I’m glad I did it. It was a huge learning, a completely different ball game from going to the set as an actor. WOULD YOU WANT TO DIRECT A FULL-FLEDGED MAINSTREAM FEATURE FILM? I definitely want to do a full-length feature, though I’m not sure if it would be a mainstream film. It’s not that I’m averse to it, or I’m consciously keeping away from it, but it’s just something that would come from within me and in fact I have worked on two scripts which I hope I can direct someday. I don’t know when! TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS… I have a pretty exciting year ahead. I have Human which is a medical thriller. It’s based on the underbelly of the medical world. It’s produced and directed by Vipul Shah and Mozez Singh for the OTT platform. It’s a part I’ve never ever played before and I’m very excited about it. Then I move on to shooting Darlings which is directed by Jasmeet and produced by Red Chillies. It has Vijay Varma, Alia Bhatt, Roshan Mathew and again a fantastic crazy script! It’s dark, funny and its wicked and another part that I haven’t played before, so I’m very excited about that. After that I start Doctor G, directed by Anubhuti Kashyap with Ayushmann Khurrana and a great ensemble cast. Again a lovely script and then there’re some more things that I’ll talk about later. IS CINEMA THE USUAL DINING TABLE CONVERSATION AT HOME WITH VIPUL (HUSBAND, FILMMAKER VIPUL SHAH)? Yes, cinema is a big topic that we share in common. Films, shows that we watch! Right now we are doing Human together, so there is even more to discuss, and talk about, and there’s a lot of give and take. But more than anything

36 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST May 2021

25/04/2021 4:31 PM

else, it’s the kids we talk about. WHAT HAS BEEN THE DRIVING FORCE THROUGH YOUR JOURNEY PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY? The biggest driving force in my life is my family. I mean my life revolves around them and if they are safe and healthy and happy the world is a better place for me. And professionally there’s one thing I learnt and I genuinely believe is that I’d rather take my work seriously than take myself seriously. HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK AS AN ACTOR FROM YOUR DEBUT UP UNTIL NOW? First of all, I never thought I would be an actor. It just happened. And I never had the aspirations to be a heroine. In fact, I never had a plan of action. My parents don’t come from this field. I didn’t know how to go about it. I never had a manager, I never went and asked for work, I just did stuff that came my way and rung true with me. And that’s how it just kept happening. There was a point in time when people would say that you’re one of the finest actors we have, but it wasn’t translating into work. I was disappointed that I wasn’t getting the kind of work that I wanted to do, but over time I realized that the kind of work I want to do comes occasionally, andI’d rather wait for that. If it meant doing one film a year or one project in two years then so be it. So, I don’t have a long resume, but a strong resume for sure. And I’m so lucky that I got to do some amazing projects with some amazing filmmakers. Whethere it was a Satya, a Monsoon Wedding or Gandhi My Father, Last Lear, Juice, Once Again, Dil Dhadakne Do, Delhi Crime... I mean I used to feel that if it’s not as good or better than something I’ve already done, than is it worth me going to work. It made sense to me, so I stopped worrying about it.

very serious’ and all of it, but a couple of minutes down the line they realise that I’m goofy, I can be funny, and I’m as genuine as they come. I can’t put up a farce and I’m the worst actor in real life. So, what you see is what you get. I have a full life, I love acting and I’m happiest on the set, but I have my kids, I have my family, I’m a homemaker, a mother, I write, I paint, I cook, I love doing my house, I have friends, I love reading, so there’s a lot that fills my life. And I love travelling. If I could, I would just travel and live out of a suitcase. WHAT IS THAT ONE LIFE LESSON YOU HOLD MOST DEAR? Sometimes you fall down and you get up, dust your knees, put on a bandage and you move on. But there isn’t one lesson. There are a lot of them. And you learn them on a day-to-day basis. But whatever you do, honesty is paramount. Vulnerability is important. I know people put up a protective cover around them, and maybe that’s a good thing, but for me, no filters has worked better. It’s very important to take chances and follow your gut and your instinct. Love abundantly and show it. So many lessons… very difficult to compile it in an answer really.

ANY REGRETS? I don’t regret anything. There’s no point regretting. I was at that age at that point in life with that certain level of understanding and I did it. So there’s no point looking back. There’s no pint of what ifs really. May be not doing one or two projects which I could not do… one was Mira Nair’s The Namesake. I was offered the film, but my dates were committed to Gandhi My Father and I’d never back out of a commitment no matter how desperately I wanted to do The Namesake. Second was Talwar. My dates were with Dil Dhadakne Do and there was no way I could give time to that. I really missed being a part of that. WHAT IS THE REAL SHEFALI LIKE, WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN NOT FACING THE CAMERA? YOUR PASSIONS? When people meet me they are very intimidated by me. Like before they meet me, they are like ‘Oh My God, she’s

I DON’T HAVE A LONG RESUME, BUT A STRONG RESUME FOR SURE. AND I’M LUCKY THAT I GOT TO DO SOME AMAZING PROJECTS WITH SOME AMAZING FILMMAKERS.

I Dare!

INTERVIEW

I Win!

The petite Sarwat Gilani meets me at the Mall of the Emirates at an Indian fusion restaurant and marvels at the molecular gastronomical delights the place serves. She’s got a beautiful ajrakh scarf for me that reminds me of the fabrics of Rajasthan. We discover a common thread – she is related to a close friend from India, Aliya Babi who is from the Parveen Babi family. A free-wheeling chat with the versatile actor who made Churails a respectable term for women who spoke their mind, women who dared… who won! Manju Ramanan

What brings you to Dubai and what are your memories associated with the UAE? I love Dubai’s vibe, it’s is a place where I feel like I “belong,” even though I am an outsider but the assumption isn’t automatically “where are you visiting from?” but rather “do you live here?” There aren’t many cities which are similarly nonpresumptuous in that way. In Dubai I meet people from all around the world and they often make me wonder about their interesting stories of Dubai. One such story always intrigued me and that was about ‘The Pearls of Dubai’, a book that belonged to my grandmother. In that book I learnt that Dubai was home to pearling sites, they were regular destinations for pearl divers dating back to 800 years ago. So someday I would love to have my story of pearl diving in Dubai...or at least that’s the excuse I give for visiting Dubai! How are you and Parveen Babi related? Parveen Wali Muhammad Khan Babi was born in the state of Junagadh, which was the princely State of my grandfather’s brother Sir Muhammad Mahabat Khan III Khanji. Parveen was a ‘Babi’ which means she belonged to the same clan or dynasty as my granddad (Major Nawab Ghulam Moin ud-din Khanji Fateh ud-din Khanji Babi, Khan Sahib of Manavadar) There are thousands of Babis and we are not all particularly related. Babis came from Khorasan and ruled the princely states of Junagadh and Manavadar. Let’s say like all the Khans and Sheikhs are not related, neither are the Babis. Although Parveen was my mother’s chachi ma’s real niece (aunt’s real niece) and we would always hear about her but it would be safe to say she was from the same dynasty or clan as my maternal side but not directly related. Which are her films you have liked the most and why? The magical, mystical and mesmerizing Parveen Babi was the most glamorous fashion icon. Her comic role in a movie called Duur Desh was one of my most favourite roles of hers. I can never forget her as Jenny in Amar, Akbar Anthony and of course Shaan and Namak Halal to name a few. More than her acting I will forever remember her persona, with her chiseled looks, well-sculpted body and anglicized accents that made her the prima donna of Bollywood. I remember as a kid, all my aunts wanted to be her or at least secretly desired to be as desirable as her. At a time when conservative dressing was the norm of the family Babi’s attire was completely westernized providing her a certain latitude in India’s male-dominated film industry and that to me showed that she was very bold and embraced herself inspite of the times she lived in. Your web-series Churails crashed several stereotypes in the world of content. Were you expecting it and how did you take to the risqué path? Winning Hit List OTT Award and a Film Companion Gold Disk doesn’t happen every day. Kudos to Asim Abbasi for doing what everyone wanted to do, break stereotypes like never before. I had read Asim’s work before and it had always been a page turner, but when I read the script Churails, I knew it was something special, most unusual and a very bold storyline. There was so much insight, honest questions and the hard truth, a truth not many of us want to address or face. It was a ground- breaking series globally because everyone could relate to the truth that was being told. I felt Churails was well received because we are all victims of the same mindset. A script that is so honest and tells its story with such clarity is bound to be very powerful and expected to draw extreme reactions especially in a society like ours. How dare we try 38 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST May 2021

and shake the patriarchal and misogynistic walls of our society or how dare we strip the prevailing hypocrisy of its façade? It made waves globally and questioned a woman’s place in every society, not just our own. It made people especially men very uncomfortable, and that was the idea to make these issues dining table conversations so we can start the journey to fixing them. I was blown away to see what a ground-breaking product it turned out to be. And as someone who’s always spoken her truth I felt compelled to be a part of the story. Did you have a gleeful but tough time answering the trolls? Trolls don’t really affect me much but they do give me an insight on how a lot of people are thinking. As far as Churails is concerned surprisingly there was more love than hate and more praise than criticism and this overwhelming appreciation reaffirmed my belief that we as

a society are beginning to grow and evolve. You have several other roles that you play in real life - of being mom, wife, daughter in law, daughter and actor. How does it all rhythmize? In order to do it all, one has to be super-organized and the people who are close to me know how OCD I am about my kid’s routine, my life’s timelines etc. I’ve observed and learned from some amazing and outstanding women in my life who are great home makers, professionals and mothers, I would always wonder how they did it and so when it was my time I knew exactly what I needed to do and how important it was to strike a balance between myself and all that I want to achieve. Tell us about your art school? Fortuitously coming from a Nawab background music and arts was always appreciated and enjoyed in my family, I remember as a child I was an ardent art student because my mother instead of bringing me dolls would give me art material. Art gave me the ability to express myself in many creative ways and hence acting was one of them. I’m am a graphic designer by education from the prestigious Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture and I loved every bit of it. It gave me the vision, the organizational skills and an artist’s eye to see the world through a more creative and open-minded lens. You are part of the special Olympics. Share a few insights? Special Olympics Pakistan is a nonprofit organization that has been transforming the lives of thousands of children and adults since the past 30 years. As an Ambassador of Special Olympics, Pakistan I have witnessed the kind of change the power of sports and inclusiveness has made in each individual’s life, it is a unique metamorphosis that transforms these children with special needs into power house athletes, owing and embracing their differences. And these benefits are not just restricted to them getting a medal, but also translated into every aspect of their lives, enabling them to realise their own potential by being able to get a job and earn for their own livelihood and families. Seeing people like our Chairperson Mrs Ronak Lakhani creating opportunities and platforms for our special athletes is absolutely awe inspiring. Her willingness and strength to change the perception of differently-abled people in our society gives me great hope and renews my belief that if you are

willing to go all the way, you will be the victor. I use this belief in my everyday life and now I know that everything is possible. Do you feel artistes need to raise issues of social concern? I believe we are not mere entertainers but actual role models who have a huge responsibility to inspire uplift and elevate our followers to a better way of life. As a generation, our greatest tool is social media and we are lucky that we have the eyes and ears of so many people that it would be a shame if one didn’t shed light and create awareness about important social issues. If every artist picked up a cause, imagine the kind of change it would bring to our society especially the underprivileged among us. Media is a very powerful tool that can change mindsets and changed mindsets change lives. How did you meet your husband and how does he support you? Fahad and I met at a theater play with friends and we clicked right away. He was and still is very charming and flamboyant and I totally fell for it. But what made me really fall in love with him was his passion for helping people especially those who had been severely disfigured through accidents. His honesty and willingness to go far and beyond for those people and help them recover is what makes me fall in love with him every day. Just like me, he has a passion to give back to everyone around him and I think that’s where we both clicked. He was always comfortable in his skin and it is rare to see a man accept a spouse who’s more famous than him and still choose to help them embrace themselves. I believe he is a complete man because he always encourages me to be myself and do the best I can. It takes a substantial amount of love to say ‘don’t burn yourself out, take a break...head to a spa and pamper yourself I’ll take care of everything’. I’m very lucky to have Fahad as my partner, I can safely say I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for him being the bed rock on which I stand. Which are the Bollywood films you have enjoyed watching and why? We all grew up watching Indian movies. My love for cinema was born out of watching Indian films, My ideal hero was Aamir Khan. I still remember watching these amazing movies with my family, classics like Satte Pe Satta, Amar Akbar Anthony, Sharabi, Lagaan, Andaz Apna Apna, Bazaar, Salam Bombay, Arth to movies like Dil Chahta Hai, Tarey Zameen Par, Rockstar, Gangs of Wasseypur and Piku. It was the same language, culture and aspirations and I could

relate to them. Tell us about meeting Karan Johar and his reaction to Churails? I can never forget standing in the airline queue to board our flight from Rome back to Karachi and I see this guy waiting in another line being escorted by an official with a huge trawler with 15 pieces of luggage on it, I remember thinking to myself “who would want to shop so much from Italy” and to my surprise it turned out to be Karan Johar, and I was just exclaiming “O my God! O my God! It’s Karan....it’s Karan Johar!!!” I told Fahad and he turned to look and confirmed that it surely was him. Thanks to my uncontrollable excitement he looked our way and Fahad asked him if we could take a picture with him, he was polite enough to smile and nod to which I dashed towards him. I told him we were huge fans from Pakistan, we took a picture and he also said ‘hi’ to everyone in Pakistan in a small video clip. I thought it was very nice of him to do that given the current state of affairs between the two countries. I told him I was an actor and he had a sweet comment to respond back with. It showed how unbelievably real he was. I love him and his work! After Churails, Karan reached out to me saying that he loved Churails and my work in it. He also sent love to the entire cast and crew of Churails. It is then that I reminded him that I bumped into him at the airport in Rome couple of months ago and he actually remembered. What are your future projects? I have done two more web series for Zee5 and I can’t wait for them to be released. I’m also in talks for a film that is planned to be shot in the winter of 2021. Besides media, a project that has been very close to my heart is setting up a vocational center for kids. During the lockdown I realised how difficult it was to keep my two boys entertained and so I started doing home art classes which were exceedingly well-received across Pakistan and abroad. A lot of mothers reached out to me on various child related issues and that is when I felt there was a dire need of creative, educational and vocational training for both kids and parents together. My space would ideally enable that to happen. Your DP status says Sky is the Limit. Elaborate! I believe the human body is the most advanced technology on the known planet and as such our mind is limitless. So I choose to believe that one can eventually achieve anything their heart truly desires. May 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 39

id is a day for happiness, joy and prosperity after completing one full month of devotion in prayers, fasting and eating delicious food throughout the Ramadan month. We usually start the day early with morning prayers at home or at a nearby mosque. Going for the Eid prayers with my family members and greeting everyone there is a very humbling experience. I cannot thank Allah enough for showering his blessings on me and my family by giving us the opportunity to live in such a beautiful Islamic country where practicing my religion comes so naturally.

This is followed by a lunchtime feast with loved ones and family most important my grand-children, and a chance to reflect on the month of Ramadan. It’s a day where I can spend more time with family and give more time to children and grand-children as they need it. Having lived in UAE for 25 years, every Eid was special and memorable. May Allah bless the leaders of this beautiful country with long life, health, happiness and success in this world and thereafter.

id, which is to be celebrated on the commencement of the month of the holy Ramadan, is not just about the fasting, the spiritual aspects of it but also the mean value that brings the family together. In the times of COVID, rather than focusing on the negative, we like to focus on the positive aspect of Ramadan. This year we would like to focus on our immediate family. We know the need of hour is people wanting to celebrate their rituals and their festivals but we need to keep in mind the fact that if we don’t hold our horses back this year or next, maybe there won’t be any of us left for the next year’s celebrations. So, we aim to keep this Ramadan limited to ourselves, where we dress up in pretty dresses of prettier colors, savour the spiciness of biryanis and revel in the blissful sweetness of the sheer khurma that balances out everything. The afternoon nap with a stomach full of happiness is by far the most important tradition of our family. During the breakfast on each Ramadan, we speak about how weird it feels to eat in the daylight and the stomach says there is something wrong, so wrong. We then wake up, creased clothes and sleepy eyes, sit back and go for a long drive, to either Fujairah or Qudra lake, where we see tons of families sitting, having their picnics and their big baskets of food, watching ducks swim by, As the sun sets everyone prepares to leave, we too come back home have our dinner, and end the day watching an old Bollywood film whose dialogues we remember in our deepest sleep. As the day ends, and we prep to sleep, the eye is wide awake and the stomach growling for food at four in the morning!

or the last two occasions, we have had to spend the holy month of Ramadan amidst one of the worst pandemic of recent times. Last year, as this was allgenerally unprecedented to the world, everyone scrambled around to try and make the most of the Eid festivities. This year, as we have had time to think and explore our options for Eid rejoice amid the movement restrictions in place to limit the spread of the virus, we have agreed to celebrate Eid as much as we can in the safest way possible. This Eid, our family has planned to hold virtual calls with relatives and friends across the globe in which we all will join in and not only get to meet and greet but also share one thing that we have learned during the holy month of Ramadan or even in the past year. As everyone’s experiences has been so unique, it will be great opportunity to understand the different struggles that we went through and in turn be thankful for the life that God has given us to give back and teach others. We all have to be responsible citizens by abiding the regulations laid down by regulatory authorities in curtailing the virus widespread. As the world is ever changing, we should adapt quickly to still find ways to relish such get-togethers on special occasions with family and friends yet be safe and healthy. elebrating Eid in Dubai is truly a blessing... For me, observing the Holy month of Ramadan especially in Dubai is a really spiritual experience. During the day, most offices and schools work shorter hours and this gives us more time to spend with the family reciting the Holy Quran, praying Salah and then sharing in the Iftar preparations. The best part is hearing the Azan - call to prayer five times a day and the additional special prayers - Tarawih held every night post the breaking of the fast where people pray in congregation and give charity (zakat) to the underprivileged showing compassion to all. It is heartwarming to see how my grandson takes the initiative and really enjoys being part of this. We usually give special boxes of sweets to the poor and distribute the lunch boxes and sweets at the mosque and to workers in the labor camps. These are gestures of goodwill and bring luck to us for the entire year. This is followed by having the traditional Sheer Khurma and then all the children in our family and in the community gather to receive the long-awaited envelope with a token gift of money – the coveted ‘Eidi’. Everyone then dresses up in traditional ethnic wear and we proceed to a close friend’s home to have a sumptuous Eid lunch. We usually have the famous lamb biryani, with Haleem and Nihari Indian / Pakistani dishes which are all time favorites along with other Arabic delicacies, such as quoozi which is brought by one of our Emirati friends a rice-based dish very popular in the Arab world. It is served with very slowly cooked lamb, roasted nuts, raisins served over rice. There are also live stations with pizza and pasta and other goodies for the children. Many friends from other nationalities and cultures join us in this celebration which continues till the evening. On the next day of Eid, we host an open house at home where we welcome friends and neighbors to our home and cook delicacies such as shami kababs, samosas, a variety of baklava and other Indian sweets. Usually Eid holidays may be 3 -4 days which along with the weekend make it an enjoyable period. This year we also plan to have a short staycation to enjoy the last few days of great weather where a few of our close friends along with their families will get together and drive down to Ras al Khaimah and enjoy a picnic by the hot springs

and waterfalls. Everyone is anxiously looking forward to spend two days in the Waldorf Astoria RAK with scintillating views and luxurious family suites so that all of us including the children can enjoy fishing and other water sports such as jet-skiing, fly boarding and going on the speedboats. My favourite is the speedboat ride which I enjoy thoroughly and am also looking forward to relaxing in their world class spa facilities. This year we are blessed to be with our daughter, son in law, and our grandson but we miss our son, daughterin - law and their beautiful daughter Zahra as they live in Arizona in the US but Insha’Allah we will see them very soon and spend the next Eid together!

he word Eid means feast or festival. Each year, as Muslims we celebrate two Eid’s - Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Fitr or chotti Eid as we call it in Pakistan, marks the end of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha or badi Eid, the conclusion of Haj. For me, chotti Eid is the most awaited since it is after one month of fasting we get to feast. It is not just about feasting but many small rituals that make this Eid special. So…. it all starts with the anticipation that has the moon been sighted, is it the last day of Ramadan, is it Chand Raat? We will soon follow TV and Social Media eagerly to find the exact date of Eid. And of course, many weeks in advance, I have chosen my Eid clothes and a traditional Eid kurta shalwar for my husband. On Chand Raat, a bunch of us close girlfriends gather at a friend’s place and it is all about mehndi, choodiyan/bangles, food, laughter and planning what to wear tomorrow? It is indeed always a memorable night of pure joy and anticipation on what the next 3 days of Eid will hold. Back home in Pakistan, on Eid morning the men go for Eid prayers and our mothers prepare the Eid trolley with typical delicacies like sheerkhurma, mithai, chat etc. as it is expected to be an open house with friends and family walking in for Eid greetings. However, my husband and I do not have any family in UAE and the culture here is quite different too as no one just walks in without prior calls. We get up at leisure and after a normal cup of coffee get ready for Eid lunch at a close friend’s house. Eid lunch is almost always at our dear friends Mall’s and Shezi. They have 3 teenaged kids and some cousins join in with young children so when we go to their home it feels really nice and just like back home with all kids dressed up running around, noise, food, Edi (money given to kids) etc. The day goes in a blur between the lavish lunch, and after a siesta at home, the Eid dinner typically is at our home or outside in a nice formal restaurant. Day 2 & Day3 of Eid also pass by in a flurry of pre-planned lunches/dinners, selfies & more social media postings, as us girls in Dubai love to post pictures. Then, as all good things come to an end Eid Holidays are over and we are back to work at our offices! Another two and a half months to wait till the badi Eid!

have lived in Dubai all my life and have celebrated all my Eids mostly in Dubai. Preparations start usually a week or two before the Eid day. Since childhood we have had three days of Eid celebration. Pre covid I was planning huge gatherings with family and friends. Since last year Eid is just with the family but connected on zoom and phone calls with extended family and friends. Every chand raat is a must with henna application and preparing sheer Khurma and special eid dishes for the Eid day. Due to Covid SOPS, this Eid will be with my children at home.I have a planned nice eid dinner at a restaurant with my children. My son’s birthday is falling on Eid so a mini staycation plan is also there on third day of Eid. Since my childhood I had three days Eid outfits, so planning different Eid looks is a must. During early morning Eid Namaz which will also be at home. we will be praying specially for all the people suffering from Covid. May Allah shower His infinite blessings on everyone. Aameen and Eid Mubarak to all. May 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 43

Like last year, this year too with the lockdown continuing in Mumbai, Eid will be a somber affair with family and friends with no major festivities. The rise in Covid 19 cases in Mumbai have kept people indoors and hesitant to be part of gatherings. However, the Eid season is also the time to release films and that too seems to have taken a beating.

Salman Khan Bollywood superstar Salman Khan who usually releases his films on Eid is trying his best to release his upcoming movie on May 13th, Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai. At the time of going to press, the news is that the film might get postponed if the lockdown in Maharashtra continues. During a Facebook Live session, the actor said that the movie will be screened theatrically only when the Covid-19 cases come down. Or it will be pushed to the next Eid. “But if it opens up and if people take care of themselves, wear their masks, maintain social distancing, don’t go out and don’t break any guidelines which the govt has put on us, this will die out very soon. If it does, we will have ‘Radhe’ back in theatres this Eid,” he said. Last year he had a somber Eid celebration in his Panvel farmhouse. This year is predicted to be the same.

Shahrukh Khan Last year, the 54-year-old actor took to Twitter to extend Eid greetings to his fans.”May the blessings of Allah see us through these times,” he wrote in the tweet.” In the end, it’s faith that keeps us going... Eid Mubarak to all. May He shower all with love, peace and prosperity always,” Khan’s tweet further read.Eid-ul-Fitr marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramzan, which is a month of fasting and prayer for the Muslim community. This year, Eid is being celebrated amid a nationwide lockdown imposed as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Imtiaz Ali Though he doesn’t fast during the holy month of Ramadan, he celebrates Eid like he celebrates all festivals if “my folks are around”. The Netflix webseries She that he has directed will see a Season 2 shortly. ‘She’ season 2, stars Aaditi Pohankar, Vishwas Kini, Kishore Kumar G, Shivani Rangole, and Suhita Tatte has been confirmed by Netflix India as part of the 15 original web series announced by the streaming giant for 2021. The synopsis of season 2 by Netflix reads:“After swearing her allegiance to druglord Nayak, Bhumi must walk the dangerous line between siding with the police or with crime, while simultaneously exploring her newfound liberation, as Nayak’s larger plan unfolds.” Directed by Arif Ali and written by Imtiaz Ali, Divya Johri, the release date of Tipping Point’s ‘She’ season 2 is yet to be announced

Huma Qureshi Huma Qureshi is all set to make her debut in Hollywood flick Army of the Dead. This Zack Synder’s film is a zombie heist flick. The film came a gift to her during the Ramadan season and is said to have a theatrical release and also on OTT from May 21st. On the Eid front, Huma Qureshi and brother Saqib Saleem who live together in Mumbai will celebrate the festival together indoors. The sibling’s family owns restaurants in Delhi and Dubai and are both foodies! So Eid promises to be a happy celebration!

Nushratt Bharuccha Given the current Covid situation I am not fasting during Ramadan to keep my immunity up. Also I live with my parents and my granny. I so want to travel or fly into Dubai but it doesn’t seem likely. Eid too will be a celebratory time with family only, strictly indoors. We have a large family and I have cousins all over Mumbai and some of them will come over if the lockdown eases. During my last Eid, my parents and family members help me shoot the Filmfare ME Eid cover! Such lovely memories!

Firoz Nadiadwala The film-maker who recently announced his OTT series Art of War: No Retreat, No Surrender doesn’t talk of an incident that kindles his Eid memory but shares a general feeling of gratefulness. ‘Eternally and perpetually grateful to God under any circumstances. That is my Eid memory,” he signs off.

Success!

for

Having completed more than three decades in the film industry, renowned production designer and art director – filmmaker, Nitin Chandrakant Desai is a legend in every right. Four-time National Award winner and three time recipient of the Filmfare Award for Best Art Direction, Desai is the name behind some of the most impressive and talkedabout sets of several films right from 1942: A Love Story, Khamoshi, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Salaam Bombay, Jodhaa Akbar, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Lagaan, Swades, Slumdog Millionaire, Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, Ishqiya, to the recent Panipat, amongst several others, as well as TV shows Kaun Banega Crorepati and Bigg Boss. It is his love for what he does that led him to set up the state-ofthe-art film and television production studio, ND Studios, as well as a school for filmmaking which he hopes to expand into a university soon. The veteran’s enthusiasm, love and passion for his work is unmistakable as we catch up with him for a candid chat. And in an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the noted production designer talks all about his journey, his ambitious projects, and most of all his love for cinema. Excerpts:

DREAM, BELIEVE, ACHIEVE! “I joined the industry when it wasn’t looked upon as a very secure profession and coming from a simple background with no connect in the industry, people had their doubts. In fact, explaining what I do for a living wasn’t easy. People wanted entertainment, but didn’t want to work in it,” laughs Desai. “But thanks to my parents who were supportive of my dreams, I could forge ahead no matter what came my way. They stood by me and my choices all through. Even today, my family has been my greatest strength and support in every way. You have to believe in your work and art and then do so well that your work inspires and speaks for your success.” MAKING A MARK! Having started as art director Nitish Roy’s assistant on television shows like Tamas, Chanakya, and Bharat Ek Khoj, Desai shifted the gear to films with Parinda (1989). However, it was his second film with Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 1942: A Love Story that put the spotlight on the young art director and got him noticed for the realistic sets of the period drama. “Everyone thought Chopra was a new kid, won’t be able to get the sets in that budget and will lose money there! So the film came with a lot of challenges and much was riding on us. But I was sure about what I wanted to do and Chopra showed such trust and faith in me that I just knew that we had to put in more than our 100 per cent. Many in the industry were skeptical and warned Chopra about risking it all

with a newcomer like me, but it was that challenge that motivated me even more. There was a hunger then to deliver and it’s still there,” recalls Desai who hasn’t looked back since. REAL CHALLENGE “I have never looked at any phase as a struggle per se. For me it’s been constant learning and growth. But yes, the biggest challenge has always been the same,” says the veteran. “Directors come with a vision, producers come with budgets, so the idea is to make them meet without compromising on either and add your skills to enhance both. For me an achievement is not about showing my aesthetics, but about bringing to life the director’s vision and helping add and bring that element to the story that would enhance, but not overshadow the real characters. Something that would do justice to the content and the subject. You have to give what the film needs and wants. People should be attracted, engrossed and the story should be supported. And that’s the key. A set should be in line with the director’s vision, not a personal canvas. If you want to focus only on showing your creativity, then go design your own bedroom!” ORIGINAL GENIUS Desai’s lavish sets especially on films like Devdas are considered a benchmark in cinema. However, he himself has never had any reference points he admits. “I’ve never had any reference point. Each set has been a first and I’m humbled when people come to me with my own work as a reference point to their films.” Bhansali (Sanjay Leela Bhansali), Ashutosh (Gowarikar), Rajkumar (Hirani)… they all have their styles and I try to fit in all their shoes. The film has to speak of the director’s style not mine!

WORK IS WORSHIP! “I have never taken a break ever in over 33 years now. Even on the day of my marriage, I remember checking out the sets before going to my wedding venue. It’s during the lockdown that I am forced to take a break, and even then we are working,” says the veteran, adding that when you are passionate about what you do, it ceases to be work. “Instead, it becomes an extension of who you are.

This is my tapasya!” FAVOURITE GENRE Are period dramas a favourite? “I don’t have a favourite as such. But yes, historicals stand out as they have won me a lot of appreciation. I’m happy and lucky to do good projects and films that got me to push the envelope.” BEST PAIRING “I respect all my directors, but Bhansali (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) is a different league. I have seen him work as an assistant in Parinda, and when he made Khamoshi, he asked me to work on it. I had 20 films on floor, but I agreed and we gave it all to the film. Of all the people his passion is on another level. He gives his best and extracts the best out of people and you will always learn.” He adds that he has loved working with others as much. “I have enjoyed working with all of them and loved adapting to their styles, right from my first to the current fourth generation of filmmakers that I’m working with. The young bring in a refreshing new perspective and energy and with them I become as young as them,” he smiles. CHANGE IS CONSTANT Much has changed in the industry, insists Desai. “Be it in terms of respect and acknowledgement of technicians or the technology itself which I have always believed in adapting to constantly. Also the budget allocations have improved much more and many more filmmakers today understand the importance of good production value as well as pre-production prep. This saves money and time,” Desai adds, “Also with OTT, makers are getting to explore and make different kinds of cinema,

so there’s a huge shift there and it’s for the best. Also international projects are coming here now and VFX is great. The set-up is corporate which is also good. But at the heart, films are a work of passion more than math. There has to be a balance there, so planning should be corporate, but the making has to be creative and passionate. Both the old school and new school have to adapt and improvise.”

AT THE HEART, FILMS ARE A WORK OF PASSION MORE THAN MATH. THERE HAS TO BE A BALANCE THERE, SO PLANNING SHOULD BE CORPORATE, BUT THE MAKING HAS TO BE CREATIVE AND PASSIONATE. BOTH THE OLD SCHOOL AND NEW SCHOOL HAVE TO ADAPT AND IMPROVISE LOOKING AHEAD “I believe that we have great content and talent which is being recognized the world over. We can do the same when it comes to our production designs. We have the potential to make our mark internationally and I hope we can do that,” says Desai. LONG WAY TO GO! He may be Indian cinema’s one of the most celebrated production designers, but Nitin Chandrakant Desai insists that he still has a long way to go. “I take myself as a student and I learn and grow with each film. I feel like I’m still a beginner. I have just learned the A of art direction and there’s a long way to go for me,” he says. DESIGNS FOR THE FUTURE “There is so much talent in our country. I hope that someday I can have a university, where apart from the technical aspects of filmmaking and syllabus-bound education, we can focus on the overall personality development that prepares and trains the youth psychologically and make them stronger. Prepare them to deal with real time challenges and work environment. This would include yoga and counselling so that they can handle the pressures and the highs and lows without losing morale. This industry can test the best of us when it comes to our inner core strengths.” As for the studio, he adds that it was set up to provide the best in production to avoid wastage of time and money and no compromise on creativity. JOURNEY SO FAR “Every day is a new day, I thank God that I’m alive, working and doing what I love. Every art work is new and so are the challenges it brings with it. I have always taken on challenging projects, faced a lot of difficulties too but always overcome obstacles. I used to dream big but I was driven. It’s a blessing that I’m still relevant and that I get to be a youngster with the young generations. I am humbled with all the respect and recognition over the years,” signs off Desai. CONGRATULATIONS FOR JERSEY (2019) WINNING THE NATIONAL AWARD! Yes that came as quite a pleasant surprise for all of us. We had given up on that aspect as all award events stood cancelled in 2020, so this announcement came as a surprise. We are happy and honoured.

Having kickstarted 2021 with his Jersey winning the National Award, Nani has a busy year ahead with as many as three films lined up starting with Tuck Jagadish. Best known for packing a punch on screen when it comes to action, he’s equally known for his romantic, boynext-door image. The actor first shot to Pan-India fame with the SS Rajamouli blockbuster hit Eega - that went on to become one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of the year – and broke the language barriers to become a much-celebrated name countrywide. However in an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the South superstar reveals why he’s in no rush to join in the current crop of the stars hopping on the Pan-India bandwagon, talks about Jersey being remade in Hindi, and shares why Tuck Jagadish is a nostalgic film for him. Excerpts:

SHAHID KAPOOR IS WORKING IN THE HINDI ADAPTATION OF JERSEY. DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET? No, not yet. We were supposed to meet when I was shooting in Mumbai, but then lockdown happened and we couldn’t. ARE YOU APPREHENSIVE ABOUT IT BEING REMADE? Not at all. A lot of times there’s a fear that the essence of the original will be lost, but with Gowtam (Tinnanuri) directing it again, they will recreate the magic for sure. I have no doubt about Shahid and Gowtam doing full justice to it. THE PROMOS OF YOUR UPCOMING FILM TUCK JAGADISH HAVE BEEN VERY WELL-RECEIVED… It’s a very special and a nostalgic film for me personally too. It reminds me of the kind of films I used to love watching. We rarely get to see these kind of wholesome entertainers nowadays, as usually the genre is either action or comedy or romance. Tuck Jagadish is a mix of it all and I’m very glad with the way it has shaped up. There’s action, family drama, romance and there’s a certain honesty about it. The best thing is that it has all happened organically. Every element is a part of the story and nothing has been added just to up the commercialization of the film. So it’s a very intense story with the family values dealt very maturely. A LOT OF ACTORS ACROSS INDUSTRIES ARE GOING PAN-INDIA. WHAT ABOUT YOU? I believe that a good film always reaches the right audience. And now especially with the OTT, the best thing is that when the audience hears about an interesting film, they check it out and see it irrespective of the language. The subtitles make the language barriers redundant. In fact, in the future there won’t be Pan-India films at all. There will be good films and bad films, irrespective of the language. The content will decide whether the film is PanIndia or not! So I have never looked at a film in that way. I try to make good films and if they are good, they will automatically translate into Pan-India success. Like Eega was made in Telugu and everyone knew about it across. So my focus is on making great content, it will reach the audience automatically. Even now, the dubbed versions get 200 million plus hits, so we know the reach. The idea is simple, you hear the narration, say a yes if you like it and then give it your all! HOW IMPORTANT ARE AWARDS FOR YOU? I never work for awards. The idea is always to make a film that will find an emotional connect with the audience. And if the film or a performance wins an award then that’s an added. That’s neither the goal nor the end all! Like in Jersey, we knew that the film will touch the hearts of every father and son! It winning an award was an added. HOW’S IT BEEN GOING BACK ON SETS AFTER THE LOCKDOWN? Well, we started in October last year (2020) and I’ve been shooting non-stop since, so yes it’s going good. HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR ROLES? IS THERE ANY SPECIFIC GENRE THAT ATTRACTS YOU MORE? I avoid any genre that I did recently, so any film which is not like my last film attracts me. I want to experiment and May 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 51

INTERVIEW

try to move away from the previous genre that I did. I like to try new roles and that excites me. IF YOU WERE NOT AN ACTOR? I did think about it, but as hard as I think I feel that I have ended up where I belong! So if not for films, I would not have done anything else, I can’t see myself doing anything else. I would have been okay being an assistant director. I would’ve been terrible at anything that would have not made me happy or look forward to every morning. Nothing matters to me, not the success, just the work that I do. And I love what I do. SO WHAT DO YOU EQUATE SUCCESS WITH - BOX OFFICE NUMBERS OR FAN FOLLOWING? My success is never about numbers, but about the love I get from my fans whether a film works or not. I know that the audience can see the effort that has gone and they somewhere hold that sincerity close to their hearts too. My success is not decided by one Friday, but the faith my audience shows in me all through. In the long run, your audience believing in you is success. Even the fact that my audience finds me approachable, my fans feel like I’m one of them and they own me, that is success too. WE HEARD YOU RECENTLY HAD AN INTERESTING FAN ENCOUNTER? Yes I was shooting for Shyam Singha Roy and one day while going for a shoot, a fan came up and said, ‘Nani, I am a big fan of yours. If you do not take a selfie with me, the shooting will not take place.’ Rajahmundry is the only place in the world that can give such a warning with such love (laughs). But then this is something we all take in our stride. And I look at the love of my fans as a blessing. Recently, I met another lady, she called me her son and insisted that I eat at her place. So, there are so many beautiful moments and I’m touched with the warmth and love they shower me with.

WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON THE COMPETITION? It may sound clichéd, but I am not in a race here nor are we here to compete with anyone. The purpose is to improve and better your own performance each time you face the camera and even then the goal is not BoxOffice oriented, the idea is to translate good stories on screen that people can relate to and they enjoy the experience of watching you on screen. THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHEN YOUR FILMS DID NOT DO AS WELL AS EXPECTED, SO HOW DID YOU DEAL WITH THAT PHASE? Hit or flop, I’m always learning and growing, giving my best that I can. Like I said, my success is not defined by one Friday or the BO status of my film. It’s more important for me that my efforts are consistent and my fans have that connection with my screen characters. IN ALL THESE YEARS, YOU’VE STAYED UNFAZED BY YOUR STARDOM? It’s just the way I am. I am blessed that people treat me like their own son. I feel that’s my USP, but I can’t take

My success is not decided by one Friday, but the faith my audience shows in me all through. In the long run, your audience believing in you is success. Even the fact that my audience finds me approachable, my fans feel like I'm one of them and they own me, that is success too.

If I like the filmmaker or the story, then I won't be thinking whether I should do it or not because it's Bollywood. But I do believe that you need to be comfortable with the language to really emote. I can speak Hindi, but I'm not good at it. So, I need to be so excited about the script that that I'll take the time and learn the language perfectly...

credit for it. Before I became an actor I worked as an AD and I have seen so many talented people struggle. So wherever I am, I know I will always have gratitude. HOW WOULD YOU SAY HAS YOUR JOURNEY BEEN SO FAR? I am content and happy with my journey and I would not change one thing about it. Hits, flops, success, failure, everything has taught me a lot. WHAT’S YOUR VISION AS A PRODUCER? Five years down the line, I want people to look at it as a platform that has put forth great talent. Both the films I have produced have done that and that’s what I hope to continue doing and first film won national award. We are in production for the third. We started off great and I want to continue there. ANY PLANS OF DOING A BOLLYWOOD FILM? I am not looking at it, but if something comes my way, I will consider. If I like the filmmaker or the story, then I won’t be thinking whether I should do it or not

because it’s Bollywood. But I do believe that you need to be comfortable with the language to really emote. I can speak Hindi, but I’m not good at it. So, I need to be so excited about the script that I’ll take the time and learn the language perfectly and not sound like a newbie. So if I think it will drive me to take that effort and put in my effort for a film then maybe yes. HOW ARE YOU IN REAL LIFE? I love laughing, I love movies. I’ve always been a mad movie buff from my childhood and now even more. I like being happy, enjoy work, love talking cinema and I lose myself in that when I do… I believe in dreams and I like to escape in my dreamy world. WHAT ARE YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS? After Shiva Nirvana’s Tuck Jagadish, there’s Rahul Sankrityan directed Shyam Singha Roy. I’ve already completed 70 per cent shooting of Shyam Singha Roy and the team and I are thrilled with the response my first look from the film has been garnering. Like I said, I like to do completely different roles in my back-to-back films and not repeat genres, so Shyam Singha Roy will see me in a completely different role as compared to Tuck Jagadish. And both have been equally enjoyable to do as an actor. And then there’s Ante Sundaraniki being directed by Vivek Athreya. Post this, there’s another entertainer which is yet untitled and we will announce soon. ANY PLANS OF VISITING DUBAI? Dubai is the new Mumbai! I’d definitely love to visit.

INTERVIEW

Dubai-based popular DJ Steppie aka Ahmed Ellahi Khan has his finger on the pulse of the crowd when it comes to spinning music. A muchwanted name when it comes to the party scene, Steppie has worked with some of the biggest and most influential brands across Dubai. In an exclusive chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, he talks about his love for music and also reveals some of his trade secrets! WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU MOST LOVE ABOUT BEING A DJ? Music has a strong emotional impact on the human psyche, irrespective of the occasion. What I like most about being a DJ is that I get to leave a lasting impression on people’s memory of the event. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? My music is mainly hiphop, R&B and mainstream commercial songs and their remixes. I keep the remixes basic as I don’t believe in making it too complex and like to maintain a familiarity for the crowds when it comes to the music and remix tracks. WHAT KIND DO YOU ENJOY LISTENING TO THE MOST? Hip-hop and R&B are my absolute pick among other genres of music. Hip-hop music is everywhere on my own playlist, and it’s my alltime favorite WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY? I’ve always admired the multi-talented, professed

veteran Farhan Akhtar, whose voice and music has always lifted my spirits. IS THERE AN ARTISTE ON YOUR WISH LIST THAT YOU WOULD LOVE TO PERFORM WITH? DJing with David Guetta will undoubtedly be a highlight for me, as he has always been a source of inspiration, talent and motivation.

awesome response from the crowd!

WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF YOUR PROFESSION? When you first venture out, the challenge is to keep proving yourself to stand out in a crowded industry, which only a few DJs manage to do. However, even after a few years of advanced DJing, you must maintain the same work ethic and motivation. If you don’t, you’ll soon be replaced.

HOW DO YOU STAY UP TO DATE WITH THE LATEST MUSIC TRENDS? Crate digging is my relentless passion for looking for new songs. This can be accomplished in a variety of forms, from listening to internet DJ mixes, podcasts, radio shows, live sets, or listening to large amounts of music on purpose.

IF NOT A DJ… If not a DJ, I would have been a magician. A DJ and a magician are both consistent in staging skills and tricks of illusion with sleight of hands, and the success for both is an

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF MIXING MUSIC? The most challenging aspect of mixing is working out how to integrate intervals to produce a steady connection of music.

Mixing is a trick of the eye. Behind the deck, there are a slew of activities, but it is only DJ’s responsibility to keep the audience in trance. WHICH HAVE BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE SHOWS AND EVENTS? The Filmfare Middle East Diwali Night was a huge success. Then there was the New Year Eve at Polo Bar, another event in Dubai Mall and a Fresher’s Night bash.
