SHRADDHA KAPOOR WANTS TO PLAY LATA MANGESHKAR IN HER BIOPIC During a recent fan event, when Shraddha Kapoor was questioned about which biopic she’d aspire to star in, her response was, “I would also wish to say Lata Mangeshkar. I mean, it’s a very big aim, but you never know.” Indeed, it is a significant aspiration, but not entirely out of reach, given that Shraddha Kapoor is actually related to Lata Mangeshkar. Shraddha Kapoor’s maternal grandfather, Pandit Pandharinath Kolhapure, is the first cousin of Lata Mangeshkar. Consequently, Shraddha’s mother, Shivangi Kolhapure, and he sister, Padmini Kolhapure, are Lata Mangeshkar’s nieces.

AAMIR KHAN SET TO COLLABORATE WITH RAJKUMAR SANTOSHI AND SUNNY DEOL Aamir Khan is all set to make a comeback after a short break with two exciting projects in the pipeline. The first one is a reunion of Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi, titled Lahore 1947 and the second one is a remake of the Spanish film Champions. Aamir took to the Instagram account of his production company to share the news. “I, and the entire team at AKP, are most excited and happy to announce our next, starring Sunny Deol, directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi, titled Lahore, 1947. We look forward to collaborating with the immensely talented Sunny, and one of my favourite directors Raj Santoshi. The journey we have embarked on promises to be most enriching. SS Rajamouli announces his next production SS Rajamouli fans are in for a treat as he announced his next titled Made in India recently. Sharing a video on social media, he captioned the post with, “When I first heard the narration, it moved me emotionally like nothing else. Making a biopic is tough in itself, but conceiving one about the FATHER OF INDIAN CINEMA is even more challenging. Our boys are ready and up for it...With immense pride, Presenting MADE IN INDIA.” The film is produced by SS Karthikeya, Rajamoul’s son and Varun Gupta. It is directed by Nitin Kakkar.

HRITHIK ROSHAN TO SHOW HIS BARE BODY IN A SONG FOR FIGHTER A few days ago, news surfaced that Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone will be heading to Italy for the filming of two songs for their upcoming movie Fighter. The film, directed by Sidharth Anand,, is being promoted as India’s first aerial action film. The director is known for incorporating grand songs in his movies such as Bang Bang, War, and Pathaan. The two songs in question will showcase Deepika and Hrithik in a dance sequence and a romantic melody. As per a report by ETimes, Hrithik will be showcasing his sculpted physique in a grand dance number, accompanied by numerous talented dancers from both India and Italy.

Indian performers are getting their fair share of international spotlight. At the recently announced nominations for International Emmys 2023, Shefali Shah, Jim Sarbh and Vir Das were amongst the nominees. Shefali Shah reprised her role as DCP Vartika Chaturvedi in Season 2 of the crime-drama, Delhi Crime and bagged Best Performance by an Actress nomination. Vir Das’ uproarious stand-up special, Vir Das: Landing, got him nominated in the Comedy category. Meanwhile, Jim Sarbh has secured a coveted International Emmy nomination for his performance in Rocket Boys.

ALIA BHATT TO CO-PRODUCE VASAN BALA’S JIGRA WITH KARAN JOHAR Following the success of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and making her Hollywood debut with Heart of Stone, Alia Bhatt has announced her next film with Vasan Bala. Bala Reuniting with Karan Johar and Dharma Productions, the actress is set to co-produce the movie under her banner Eternal Sunshine Productions. Titled Jigra, the film is set to release in theatres on September 27, 2024. Dharma Productions took to social media to make the announcement. The tweet read, “@aliaa08 is back to put up a courageous fight like no other for her #Jigra! JIGRA, directed by Vasan Bala - releasing in cinemas on 27th September 2024.” Along with the announcement, the production house released a video as well.

Ashutosh Gowariker to make a film on Adi Shankaracharya

During the grand unveiling of the Statue of Oneness, a 108-foot tribute to Adi Shankaracharya in Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh, the Acharya Shankar Sanskritik Ekta Nyas announced their collaboration with Ashutosh Gowariker to bring the teachings and legacy of the legendary Indian Vedic scholar and philosopher to the big screen. In reference to the project, Ashutosh Gowariker shared his enthusiasm, stating, “Adi Shankaracharya was a remarkable figure in Indian history, and his teachings continue to resonate with people around the world. You have come a long way since your debut 11 years ago with Student of the Year (2012)? I really can’t believe sometimes that it’s been that long to be honest. But yes, it has been a great learning curve. Evolving with every film, being so many characters, exploring different genres, and getting to entertain the audience. You came in with an innate star swag and confidence, is the Varun Dhawan any different today? I have never looked at it like that, but if anything, there’s a greater sense of responsibility today… towards my audience as the expectations are higher and I don’t want to let them down. You have struck a fine balance between the quintessential massy hero and the niche actor! For me massy or classy or niche, that’s never been the criteria. I believe in entertaining the audience in whatever genre I am doing. If the story, the characters excite me as a movie lover, I’m on board. I like to see the audience whistle and clap for the hero, for the heroine… I have grown watching and enjoying that cinema and being a part of that audience, so I do want to see that happen from this side of the screen too! So do you track box office numbers, are they important or you go by critical acclaim? It’s a mix of both. I don’t lose sleep over either, but I totally

watch for the numbers, as that Box Office factor will decide my next five movies and the acclaim will ensure that I’m on the right track as an actor. All I know is that I’m not afraid to push the boundaries, conventional, unconventional, I’m game for it all. And I want to keep challenging myself with every film. A hit gives me the confidence, the freedom as an actor to do that.

You have proven to be one of the most bankable names at the Box Office and

will do it! The age or the generation are secondary. My choice has more to do with the storytelling and whether it gives me an opportunity to transform into a character that would in turn resonate with my audience. Rest everything falls into place if the storyline, the narrative, the vision of the filmmaker and the energies of the actors are in sync.

Any favourite genre... You seem to have a great knack for comedy and your timing is impeccable there…

As actors, we are not immune to the hits and Flops, they are a part of our journeys, but I tend to not overthink or over-feel either of them. versatile too!… That’s the best thing about being an actor that you get to do so many characters and play out so many facets, live out so many lives!

and you don’t want to let them down. As actors, we are not immune to the hits and flops, they are a part of our journeys, but I tend to not overthink or over-feel either of them.

So how do you deal with a film that doesn’t clock in the numbers that you were hoping? I own it and move on. As an actor, I gave it the best I could. I analyze what could have been, but don’t over analyze, I’d rather work on my next. When not facing the camera, what would we catch you doing? Spending time with Natasha, watching movies or a series, chilling with friends, with family… The one thing I have realized over the years is that we don’t live in the moment

enough. It’s either the past or the future, and we overthink. So, I enjoy what I have, I am grateful and just happy to be in this phase now where I can appreciate more and chase less!

What has been the biggest takeaway in so many years and learnings? That entertainment never stops and to keep working at it. I’ve been fortunate to have gotten to explore so many characters, be a part of some amazing films and work with fantastic filmmakers. I just hope to keep doing better, because there’s no end to that hunger as an actor. Action, comedy or romance... All three really. My next project has me do it all and I’m really excited about it.

Husband and wife duo Pankaj and Nidhi have been creating dreams together, one stitch at a time. They talk with Tanisha Bhattacharya about what makes them tick

Pankaj and Nidhi are a talented designer duo who launched their label in 2006. They are the winners of the iconic International Woolmark Prize, 2012, India and competed for the International Finals at London Fashion Week in February 2013. In 2012, they were chosen as Grand Finale designers for Lakme Fashion Week where their collection received a standing ovation. In 2010 they also won the Grand First Prize at the International Apparel Federation’s International Fashion Award at the World Apparel Convention in Hong Kong. Pankaj graduated with top honours from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (N.I.F.T.). He won the Uma Nath Gold Medal for topping academics and the Ritu Kumar Award for Best Graduating Collection 1995. He also won the first Smirnoff International Fashion Award in 1994. After that, he worked with one of India’s top designers, Rohit Bal, as Head of Design for 10 years. He met and married his colleague Nidhi, who also studied at N.I.F.T, while working there. The husband and wife team talks about the process they follow and what propels their drive towards perfection. HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY IN THE FASHION WORLD BEGIN? Nidhi: Both of us were science students, but destiny had other intentions, and fashion just happened because of our interest in art and design. So we applied to NIFT. Pankaj was senior to me – there were only 25 seats in the whole country. We were destined to be in fashion. Just to give you an example, for instance, in the initial few years, when we did the latticework, we would try to do it in a way that it would look as if it were done in the air. So it was woven and then the fabric

So when I checked out Prague, I was amazed to see how easily the capital city of Czech Republic also called Czechia gets the right tick on all boxes of the checklist when it comes to making your dreams come true. Here I list down the top 5 Reasons that make it the ideal destination for a fairy-tale wedding!

Easy Connectivity

ne of the most important aspects for a Destination Wedding is the travel and connectivity for the guests! The Vaclav Havel Airport is wellconnected to all the major cities of the world with regular flights. The airport is also situated at a comfortable driving distance of 30 to 40 minutes from the main city. When it comes to local transport, the city is very well-connected with trams. Taxis are available, but not the most recommended as the fares can run high. It would be a good idea to arrange a pick-up from the hotel.

rague offers some of the most idyllic and picturesque landscapes that make it just perfect for those dreamy pre and post-wedding shoots. While the city is full off some great spots, the one we’d highly recommend is the Vrtbovska Zahrada better known as the Vrtba Garden. Registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural monument, it is a terrace-style garden on a hill that overlooks the city and provides one of the best views. While it’s situated in the heart of the city, the serene surroundings transport you away from the hustle bustle of the city life completely. An extension of the Prague’s palace gardens it also makes a great venue for weddings, but it’s a public space and may not give you the privacy for a more intimate ceremony on a busy day.

Fairytale Venues

rague provides options for a church wedding, a civil, a combination of the two or a symbolic wedding ceremony as per the rites of your own culture or religion. Based on your preferences, the venues you could consider include palatial chateaus, contemporary spaces, luxury boutique hotels, and even vineyards. Here are a few that I visited and would totally recommend. The Lobkowicz Palace: Think royal, this private palace turned museum is a much-sought after venue. Dating back to the 16th century it is situated within the Prague Castle area. While the venue doesn’t accommodate guests for overnight stays, it’s perfect for hosting the ceremony within the lavish halls. Mozart Hotel Prague: This one had my heart completely. From a Casanova suite to their largest suite, the hotel makes for the perfect venue for large as well as more intimate gatherings. The location is a big plus too. Centrally located, it’s a five minute walk from the Charles Bridge, it’s also ideal for guests who want to set about sightseeing in between. Hotel Golden Key Prague Castle: This one makes for a great venue for a small and intimate gathering. You could put up the guests here, while hosting the main ceremony

at nearby venues. The location of this hotel and pocketfriendly pricing makes it a great choice for the guests to stay. Augustine, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Prague: The medieval Augustinian monastery in the Lesser Quarter in Prague has been transformed into this luxurious hotel. What makes this one special is that you could have the ceremony here as well as accommodate all guests too. The functional monastery here adds a serene touch. Hotel Mandarin Oriental Prague: Situated in a former Dominican monastery, the hotel features spacious gardens and offers an array of facilities. Treat your guests to the spa here and enjoy the services as they ready for the big day. Their bridal suite is a dream one! Villa Richter: If open settings, in house grape and picturesque setting is what you have in mind then the classicist Villa Richter is just perfect. Situated in the St. Wenceslas Vineyard, right by Prague Castle, it offers breath-taking views of the Malá Strana panorama that will instantly make you fall in love. Žofín: This palace-turned-hotel is a great venue for the ones who prefer it all royal and larger than life! Great location and stunning halls, make it a much preferred choice.

Chateau Ratměřice: A much preferred venue for romantic weddings, the chateau boasts of fountain, extensive park areas and beautiful rooms.

COUNTRYSIDE FINDS If the countryside appeals to you more than the city, then here’re my picks for you. The lush greenery and the crisp freshness in the air is certainly a huge draw. An hour’s drive from the city and you have several options. Sort the travel ahead and book your vans for transport though.

Panství Dlouhá Lhota: This one offers luxurious spaces and elegant outdoor settings with an adventerous walk through the gardens. Spacious rooms and luxury right in the lap of nature.

Savoia Castle: The unique setting of the antique castle is a perfect backdrop for stunning wedding photos and it also provides several indoor and outdoor wedding ceremony options. This one’s for a more personal and intimate gathering than large crowds. The rooms take you back in time and though they have all modern amenities, the old world charm lingers.

Tourist-friendly

Chateau Mcely: This one spells class, elegance and luxury. Tastefully done up decors and lavish pampering of their guests makes this one highly recommended on my list. Their spa and spa products are a treat too. Also brwonie points for the staff that is extremely courteous. Farm Michael: If the farm life, cosy romantic cottages, horses and fun activities like collecting eggs off the farm and fishing are what you dig then this one’s ideal.

Hop on to the tram, go sightseeing through Old Prague in a historical car, and take a romantic dinner cruise. I also ticked off all the touristy places and here’s what you should also totally do. Take a walk down the dreamy Charles Bridge and go around the local market square for souvenir shopping - I picked up loads of fridge magnets and keychains (its okay to bargain, don’t push it much though)! Check out the Astronomical Clock Tower, the Prague Castle, Old Town Square, The Church of Our Lady of Victories, also referred as the Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague, in Malá Strana, the Lenon Wall, the Book Tower, the Franz Kafka rotating sculpture and also visit the spots where films like Mission Impossible were shot. Dine at the Ginger & Fred Restaurant in Dancing House, and at the Municipal House with LIVE music and choicest of dishes. If you are not faint-hearted then check out their evening ghost-tours! Do visit Manufaktura – a 100 per cent local Czech brand and experience a unique way of making your customized soap and shampoos. Interestingly almost all of the above can be completely done within two days of walking as they are within short distances of each other. For the fashionistas, the Fashion Arena Prague Outlet is a must visit. I got the most amazing discounts and sales on top luxurious brands! This one’s a little further away from the city though and should be planned ahead. I also happened to attend the unique sight and sound festival that took place on the streets of the market square and loved the vibe. The city is very rich culturally and concerts, shows, musicals and theatres are a huge draw. Shops usually shut by 10 pm, but the trams run till late and it’s very safe to walk around post-midnight too! For the foodies, the place is a haven! Most foods are fresh produce. And DO try their local desserts.

Pocket-friendly

he stay included, Prague is easily one of the most pocket friendly cities of Europe. Most tourist attractions are actually free of cost. For the weddings, while each location has its own costing, budget-wise it still makes the cut considering it’s international. And you’ll actually be surprised how pocket friendly the whole package can actually work out to be if planned smartly.

Tips to Remember Hire a local wedding planner. Plan ahead as the venues could get booked as much as a year in advance. Be upfront with the hotels for the transportation of guests and arrange ahead. Cards are acceptable in almost all places, however it’s advisable to keep cash handy. The currency here is the Czech Crown (CZK).

Be prepared to walk... A lot! Comfortable sports shoes are highly recommended. The upside: You’ll love all the walking! The weather can change real quick, so check ahead and be prepared with back-ups in case of rains. Venues are open to customizing cuisine, but vegetarians may have limited options

run Kumar better known as Atlee, started life in Tamil films as an assistant to S. Shankar in the films Enthiran (2010) and Nanban (2012). He made his directorial debut with the film Raja Rani (2013), after that, he has directed mass hits like Theri (2016), Mersal (2017) and Bigil (2019), all featuring Vijay, all of which became commercially successful at the box office and won several accolades. His latest venture, Jawan (2023), starring Shah Rukh Khan in a double role, broke all sorts of box-office records when it was released on September 7. At the time of writing this, it has grossed over 1000 crores worldwide. It has been talked about its anti-establishment stance as well. Atlee says he has always made films which have high emotional content with a social message thrown in. He’s super happy about the kind of crazy success that Jawan has been generating. There are rumours that he’s already working on the sequel. The director talks about his philosophy and more in a candid interview.

It is a massive year to be a part of Shah Rukh Khan’s filmography…

It is a gift for a director when your lead star is having the best year and of course your pressure comes down and you know if you have merit in your film, you are going to fly. So, I was happy for Khan sir. I was happy for everyone who was a part of this film and I was personally also happy about that.

You have dealt with many sensitive topics in Jawan in a nuanced manner; was there ever a fear of backlash?

I do this in every film of mine. As a filmmaker, you must be responsible and entertaining. It is grammar and I have learnt from Shankar and Amitabh Bachchan’s films. Every film will have a good entertaining zone along with a solid responsibility. I think I carried my film with merit and that’s why you all loved the film.

Did you always wish your Bollywood directorial debut to be with Shah Rukh Khan?

I have never thought that I’m going to make a Bollywood film. Shah Rukh sir said, “Let’s make a film for everyone.” It’s an Indian film. So it’s not only for Bollywood, South, West, or East; it’s for everyone. Shah Rukh sir has a good heart. He was humble and sweet to come and say to just a four-film-old director, “Can you make a film with me?” And I was surprised and speechless when he said that I’d make a difference. I was so happy, I pinched myself. The meetings continuously happened between us every now and then. He used to call me and ask, “How’s it going? No pressure, all going well?” He didn’t ask whether the script was ready or if you were thinking about it. But he was always looking to see whether I’d made the right film at that time. When I was making Bigil, he was always behind me and said that the film was coming up well. If you need any help, let me know. Finally, after finishing Bigil, I started writing. I started my love letter to Shah Rukh Khan

We all know him, but being closer to him, I got to know him much better. By heart, he is simple and he knows his craft well. He knows how to make a film. He’s a serious producer. He can be extremely supportive of the director and the technician and their vision to make the

film better and better. I think I was blessed to have him in my fifth film. I think my graph and ideology have improved and become better.

What was the last conversation you both had before the film was released on September 7?

We met in the mixing studio after finalising the climax reel and we saw the film. Then we had coffee together. I said everything had come out really well, sir. The background score and everything and I think we have made our film. Now only we have to leave everything to God and we have to send our good prayers to him.

I asked Pooja (Dadlani, SRK’s manager), “Can we approach Deepika for Aishwarya’s character?” She said, “Yeah, let’s speak to Shah” Then Shah Rukh sir said, “I’ve already spoken to her; she’s interested. She will do it, let her get free. Then we’ll go and narrate; if she feels merit, she will definitely do it.” And I was also happy about it. So then we flew to Hyderabad; she was shooting for Kalki 2898 AD. We went to her hotel and spoke for 2–3 hours with her. Her reaction was, “Why do you have to narrate? You don’t have to narrate it to me. I’m coming.” I told her, “No, ma’am. It is not a small character. It is the central pillar of the film and you have to know before you’re doing it.” But she said, “No, no, I will do it.” Nevertheless, she heard it. After hearing it, she said, “Oh, This is a very solid character. Oh my God.” With respect, love and in the most positive way, she came on board and I really had

What did you observe about her when she was doing emotional scenes

When you meet her next, just observe her eyes. Eyes can speak more than dialogue. I always went for a close-up shot of her. She has great eyes and she speaks the scene through her eyes more than through dialogue. I edited a lot of her dialogue because she’s such a wonderful actor to work with. For instance, she will come near the bar in that jail scene in the film and say, “Vikram kahan hai?” Before she speaks, you can feel her anger. She aggressively asks about Vikram. She came and did it in one take. I think she has a lot of stuff within her. Any director who is going to get her, I think they are blessed. They’re going to get whatever they want onscreen through her performance.

The biggest South and Bollywood

stars have come together for the film; how was the energy on the set?

India is all about unity in diversity. It feels great when everyone comes together for one reason. So if we all come together, if we all put our energy into one zone, I think it’s going to shower a lot of goodness. When I was on my set, there were multiple people speaking multiple languages. My camera operators were from Hyderabad, so they spoke in Telugu. Our team speaks Tamil. The art department speaks Malayalam and most of the actors speak Hindi. It felt homely and connected. So that is the synergy and positivity converted into a film. All the best brains and best cultures have been fused together to make Jawan, and that’s why, personally, I think this film has one X factor where all synergies are coming together to give a great positive.

What were your takeaways from Jawan?

See, every film teaches you a lot of stuff. This particular film has taught me patience and calmness. If you really wish for something, you have to wait and be a little patient and that’s the best learning I have had. I didn’t have patience before. I have always been like, I have to finish the film and I have to move on, this and that. But now I am really calm and it’s worth it. It was. I think I have to give credit to my wife Priya and Shah Rukh sir. Yeah, I have to give credit to both of them. They both made me patient and calm. Their presence in my life made this film better.

Speaking of your wife, how does she balance out your life?

I am a very fast person. I have to finish, which means I rush a lot. But she holds me and says that it’s okay. It will take time. You’re pulling a mountain now; it can’t happen like that. So you have to really

be patient and see. She’s my best positive energy and that keeps me growing at this level. In 10 years of directing five films, where I am today is all because of my wife. I’m really thankful.

Your child, Meer, born this year in January, must be a lucky mascot for you…

Yeah, after his birth, life has really given me a new grammar. He, in his own way, makes me calm. A lot of things are happening. The film is being showered with love, reviews, and box office numbers, but I’m at home. Sitting with him, we both look at each other and I’m extremely calm. It’s like he’s saying, “You have nothing more important than me in the world, so concentrate on me.” And he’s right.

After all the rumours that were there, do we get to see a movie where Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan come together?

Kalki Koechlin plays a distraught daughter coming to terms with her mother’s dementia in Goldfish. She chats with Tanzim Pardiwalla about the experience

Anyone who has ever had the rare privilege of watching Kalki Koechlin, best known for her roles in Dev.D and Margarita With A Straw, among other films, in a theatre play will tell you that when the spotlight hits her, it’s impossible not to get mesmerised by her presence. So her latest role in theatre director Pushan Kripalani’s film Goldfish seems like the perfect project for her acting prowess to shine. The film sees her at her most vulnerable as a young woman navigating her relationship with her mother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s. For Kalki, this came at an interesting trajectory in her life. The actress opened up about finding a balance between her personal and professional lives on a Zoom call all the way from Spain...

DEV.D WAS YOUR BREAKOUT ROLE; IT WON YOU A FILMFARE AWARD. HOW MUCH WOULD YOU SAY HAS CHANGED SINCE THEN? While filming Dev.D you could wake me up in the middle of the night and I would know my lines. I would be able to say them; I was so nervous about lines. Now I’m much more concerned with the meaning of the lines, so it’s not so much about getting the right words. It’s about getting the meaning across and that helps a lot. Of course, language has helped. Getting a proper Hindi teacher, to be able to speak properly, helps a lot. I also know that it's healthy for me to counter whatever I'm doing. So if I'm playing an intense role, then after I get home, I need to shake that off and go for a swim, do some exercise, or even just watch a light show. Something that will just change my energy. I started understanding the need to

balance it out. WITH ALL THE VERSATILE ROLES YOU’VE PLAYED SO FAR, FROM ADITI IN YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI TO LAILA IN MARGARITA WITH A STRAW, HAVE YOU NARROWED DOWN A PROCESS THAT WORKS FOR YOU? It depends on each and every character because some are light. With Aditi in Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, there was no process. I just worried about how my hair looked. It was more about bonding with my co-stars than any hard-core process. All four of us (Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur) were hanging out a lot. We were having dinners together, going for walks in the mountains together, and stuff like that. That was the important thing. For me something like Margarita was completely different. For six whole months, I stayed in a wheelchair and just practised with it.

I also practised the speech and how the muscles would move. I went so deep into it, even physically, that I started having problems. I had a backache. In this case for Goldfish, my director gave me a bunch of research material in terms of the accent—getting the right kind of British accent and wearing certain kinds of outfits. It was also about this British attitude of keeping everything inside. She’s from a culture where you hide things and bottle them up. So that was an important feedback from him. I can go on and on, but each and every character has a journey. WHAT MADE YOU SIGN GOLDFISH? Honestly, I was already a fan of Pushan Kripalani. I’ve told him that whenever you do anything, I’d like to work with you. He said, “Oh yes, I have a perfect role for you. It’s about a motherdaughter relationship and it’s beautiful. Unfortunately,

I have no money. And I don’t know when I’ll make it”. That was pre-pandemic, and it took about four years for him to call me back and say, “Okay, I found a producer and they want to start shooting yesterday, so let’s go!” He’s the main reason. I cried when I read the script. We don’t often see these kinds of subjects. We view them as hopeless or dark, but this is a hopeful film, and it has forgiveness in it. That’s what makes you cry more, because when you can’t hold the anger anymore, the sadness comes out. HOW EMOTIONAL WAS THE PROCESS OF FILMING FOR YOU? We were shooting in London during a COVID-19 wave. We were insulated with only a small crew and the actors. We shot the whole film in less than a month. Our DOP had a three-camera set-up, so we always had one camera on Deepti Naval, one camera on me and another camera taking the whole scene. We

Now that I’m a mother, I have become much more sensitive to what she had gone through. Because that mother’s love in the beginning, no matter how tough she might have been or whatever, still gave everything for you to be

HEAVEN? It’s fun because you already know the familiar habits that this character has. Sometimes I just go back and look at some of the scenes from the first season just to remember that she had this problem or that issue. I also got the chance to play with the whole pregnancy thing. Since I had experienced pregnancy, I was like, “Oh, I know I’m going to be hungry all the time” or “I’m going to be sick all the time.” So, adding those little things was fun.

I cried when I read the script (of Goldfish). We don’t often see these kinds of subjects. It was exciting, and intense. WERE THERE ANY REFERENCES YOU LOOKED AT? I was given the name of a British actress and was watching all her interviews and listening to her. I remember mimicking and getting that accent right. And other than that, Pushan didn’t give me too much. He gave me a lot of stories because Pushan and the writer Argya Lehri, who had written the script together, both had family members who had dementia; actually, Deepti ma’am’s mother also had it. They gave me some strong anecdotes. Having that background and the real stories around me was helpful. YOUR EX-HUSBAND ANURAG KASHYAP PRESENTED THE MOVIE. WHAT’S YOUR WORKING DYNAMIC WITH HIM? He came on board after the film was finished. It went to the Busan Film Festival and he came to watch our film. He loved it and said, “I’d love to support it,” and we were, of course, thrilled. We need all the help we can

YOU ARE SHOWING YOUR VULNERABLE SIDE IN THIS FILM. WHAT GOES ON IN YOUR MIND WHILE FILMING EMOTIONAL SCENES? You shouldn’t think when you’re acting. All your thinking should have happened before. That’s why you prepare. You find out how this character will respond. What words would she choose to use in this situation? All that preparation happens before. But the day when you’re doing that scene where you have to break down, get angry, smash something against the wall, or anything, you just have to react. It’s all about what the other person in front of you is saying and doing, and you’re just giving it back or reacting in whichever way. It’s about being in the moment, and believing it. You believe you’re in that situation. You’re no longer Kalki; you’re Anamika and you’re pissed off at your mother because she’s insane. That’s it. WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR OWN MOTHER LIKE? Oh my God. I don’t think

WOULD YOU SAY THAT MOTHERHOOD CHANGED YOU AS A PERSON AND AS AN ARTISTE? I don’t know if motherhood has changed me. But it’s made me question who I was before and maybe just reminded me of the things that are important to me. You’re just a slave to this little child, crying 24/7. You start getting reminded of what matters in this life. And that’s just a wonderful feeling to know and to have that again. YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN UNAFRAID TO SPEAK YOUR MIND AND DO YOUR OWN THING. DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR CELEBS TO BE THEIR UNFILTERED SELVES OFF-SCREEN? We don’t know what everybody is going through. There are times when I need to be quiet too, and I can’t put it out there on social media. I need to just be in therapy or stare at the ceiling. There are times when you need to absorb what you’re going through. And there are other times

Kerala Story directed by Sudipto Sen has gone on to set new records at the Box Office and the actress admits that the film is certainly proving to be a game-changer for her. Bursting with cheerful energy and a heart-winning simplistic appeal, it’s hard not to smile as I indulge in a candid chat with Adah and ask her about her long overdue success. “I love movies, but I also love so many other things that I pursue and success for me is the chance to be able to enjoy those too and I have been doing it,” she says about following her multiple talents including dance, martial arts, and supporting various causes for animals – that she has been pursuing with equal fervour and passion. We talk to Adah about all these and more. Excerpts

IT HAS TAKEN SOME TIME, BUT YOU ARE FINALLY IN A GOOD PHASE PROFESSIONALLY AND IT’S ALL VERY WELL-DESERVED TOO… Yeah! I think whenever the universe decides that the time is right, I guess that’s when things happen. And I’m just glad that it’s happening in this ‘janam’, this lifetime. That’s the best part. DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE AN ACTOR, HOW DID IT ALL START? I was in my 10th actually when I decided that this is what I want to do. At that time I didn’t really know about movies, like I knew I wanted to act and dance as I was trained in these, but I did not know how I would get into it. But then it’s just been some divine intervention that has made things happen for me. So I have to be more than grateful for everything, but back then, I didn’t think it through, to be

honest. There was no planning, there was no thought, there was nothing. It was just like this is what I want to do. WHAT HAVE BEEN THE TURNING POINTS FOR YOU? Everything. A good film, a film that’s worked, a film that’s not worked, films that I have signed and gotten replaced or a film that I’ve done an audition and gotten rejected. Everything is a turning point because all of it leads you to where you are right now and I think I’m in a very good place right now, especially with The Kerala Story. It feels unreal to even say that I could be part of this film. So I think every single thing in my life has led me to this and all of them are turning points but maybe the main turning point would be my first film because I stepped into the film industry with it. So probably 1920. And my Telugu debut Heart Attack.

THE KERALA STORY HAS BEEN CREATING RECORDS AS ONE OF THE MOST PROFITABLE INDIAN FILMS OF 2023… Yes, and I feel so fortunate to be part of a film that’s made history and it’s one of the highest grossing women-led film ever too. WHAT MADE YOU SAY A YES TO THE KERALA STORY? Like I said, instinct and intuition. I had read some material which was like 30 pages and met Sudipto Sir (director) and he told me about 10 years of research that he’s done to do this film. He made me watch a lot of these videos that are actual testimonials. These girls had a story to tell. And I felt very privileged to be chosen for this. For me it’s either a definite yes or a definite no. There’s no midway for anything in life. I’m sort of an extremist. And this was a definite yes! WHEN ALL EYES ARE ON YOU TO SEE HOW THE NEXT MOVIE WILL BE, IS IT EASIER TO SAY A YES OR A NO TO A PROJECT? I still take my decisions based on the exact same thing that I used to even earlier which is my intuition. When you agree for a project, it’s like you are giving away a considerable time of your life to it, so the criteria is that do you want to spend time with this team, director and do I think that this project will give me happiness and would I want to wake up every morning and go on set excited. I’m not a planner person and also movies are not my entire life. So, I also enjoy so many other things while working. Like I have these parrots come to my house. They give me as much joy as a blockbuster movie would give if not more. So I only follow my intuition. It’s a feeling. HAS IT CHANGED THE KIND OF MOVIES THAT ARE NOW BEING OFFERED TO YOU? Yes, and I’m also really happy that now people feel like they can trust me with the girl being the protagonist or leading the film or with really meaty roles. I’m happy that filmmakers are offering me stories that’s different from what I’ve done before. So that’s very exciting also. Like my

TELL US MORE… In one I have negative shades, I’m playing a vicious role and I’m really evil. And I also have a comedy, which is again different. It’s kind of like a dark comedy. But I’m working with the best and I can’t tell you who, I’m waiting for them to announce. But the funniest people who you can think of, one of the top people in our country who has great comic timing and I’m glad that I’m being allowed to do the comedy also. So it’s really exciting for an actor.

YOU HAVE BEEN VERY VOCAL ABOUT ELEPHANTS... I’m very fond of all animals, but with elephants, I just seem to have this bond or connection with. They are very intelligent animals and they are also so forgiving and that’s a wonderful quality to learn from them. I work with this rehabilitation centre that takes care of elephants who’ve been injured in circuses. So there was this one elephant and she was tranquilised and her child was taken away from her and when she got up, her baby was kidnapped, her tusks were gone. Human beings are really cruel if they want to be. So she’s gone through so much trauma but when I met her she was so kind to me. There’s another elephant whose head was broken during elephant rides, there was another one whose back was injured. But when you meet them they held no malice or hatred towards humans. I really enjoy my time with them.

WHAT COMES EASY TO YOU THOUGH - ROMANCE OR ACTION OR EMOTIONAL DRAMA? It depends actually on how well written the script is. Like I really enjoy comedy and action. I did Commando and I’ve worked with really good action directors, maybe that’s why I enjoyed so much, because action is again all choreography. It’s like dance. So if you have someone really good to train you, it’s so much fun to do. I’ve enjoyed romance also. Comedy is actually my favourite genre ever. It’s even tougher than horror to get right. YOU ARE TRAINED IN SILAMBAM AND KALARIPAYATTU. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE MARTIAL ARTS? I actually started when we were shooting for Commando, and though they didn’t use it in the movie, I had so much fun doing it that I continued. It’s like a meditation thing now. YOUR INSTAGRAM IS VERY HAPPENING. LIKE YOU’LL WHISTLE A SONG, THERE’S MARTIAL ARTS, YOU DANCE AND THERE’S YOUR CAT RADHA ALSO... Yeah, like I said, there’s much more to life than movies for me. And Instagram is a great way of just being yourself. Nothing’s scripted. I can do whatever and there’s no

HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK? I don’t think too much. Like if I can continue doing stuff which I used to do before as well as do new things, I think I’m successful. I’m happy that people are offering me better roles and using my potential which I think I can do so much more. So I’m happy about that. THE INDUSTRY HAS BEEN UNDERGOING MASSIVE CHANGES IN TERMS OF CONTENT, GENDER EQUALITY, BUT WHAT IS THAT ONE THING THAT YOU FEEL IS STILL A DARK BIT ABOUT THE INDUSTRY? I think whatever dark was there is also already changing in terms of casting as well. Like people who dreamt of becoming

Yes it does take time, like for me to get The Kerala Story it took me 100 years, from 1920 to 2023, it took 103 years (laughs). But I guess you get your due. With social media, you can just put your video of yourself out there. No one can stop you. So I mean the world not just the industry… there’s a lot of darkness if you look for it but there will be that ray of light which might be a tiny bit, but I think if you can concentrate on that rather than the darkness, your life will be a little more joyful. MUSIC COMPOSER-SINGER VISHAL MISHRA BARES HIS SOUL IN A CANDID CHAT WITH AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE AND TALKS ABOUT ALL THINGS MUSIC AND HEART

Vishal Mishra is in Dubai for his maiden international concert as we catch up with the ace musician who has been all the rage since Kabir Singh. Tracing his journey from his 2016 debut in South to the game-changing, ‘Kaise Hua’ and the success of Academy Award winning chartbuster ‘Naacho Naacho’ from RRR, he reveals that the journey actually began much earlier from his first auditions. It’s thundering and pouring outside, and as we dive into our exclusive interview, seeing lightning strike the sky from the 24th floor, he points out that there’s so much beauty in simple things and it’s these things with a soul that inspire him. He’s clearly a man of the heart and it’s easy to see why his music reflects that too. Over cups of coffee and a dreamy weather outside, we chat with the musical genius about all that and more.

I’d done from 2016 onwards. I started with the Tamil film Devi (2016) and from there I did a lot of Marathi cinema, followed by Munna Michael (2017) which was my debut in Bollywood and then Qarib Qarib Single, Veere Di Wedding, Race 3 song with Salman Bhai and then I did Notebook for him and then happened Kabir Singh. And I always tell people in my concert also that there are times when you put in all your efforts, yet you feel that nothing big enough is happening. But there is a time when You started off in 2016 in God chooses to collect all the South industry, but it was the good you’ve done and post 2019 that you became creates the individual that quite the rage all across… So you wanted to become. I what was the game changer think Kabir Singh was that for you? catalyst. It reminded people I think Kabir Singh is the one of what I had done before that culminated all of what Kabir Singh and it got them You performed in Dubai for the first time, how was the experience? Not just Dubai, this was my first international concert. But yes, to be honest, I’ve always felt at home in Dubai, with the kind of love I always get on my visits here, so the concert was an extension of it. You make songs for listeners, to add to people’s lives and journey and when you can sing it with them, and their voices echo with you, I think it’s the most beautiful and gratifying feeling for an artiste.

excited about what I will do after. And I’m grateful that everything I have done has been loved immensely. As a music composer, is there a temptation to sing all your songs? Ab toh mujhe zaroorat nahi hoti kyunki log khud hi bol dete hain ki aap hi gaao, yeh gaana aapko hi gana chahiye. But you know it’s a beautiful feeling. Everything is a part of expression and as a musician I want to express as much as I can. Directors come to me like thunder and they ask me to rain my creativity and I do it. Every time I try my best and sometimes I feel that somebody else is supposed to sing the song I would ask them whether it is Arijit or sometimes Jubin and sometimes somebody else, somebody new. So it totally depends on what the script is asking for. But yes, when I’m doing my own album I prefer singing my songs because they are a very individual expression and nobody else would be able to express it the way I want to. It’s a mix of both and I am enjoying the process a lot. Where did you draw your music from? Everywhere. This thunder outside, you, the person filming us, everybody that I have met today. They are all so different and yet similar. If you dive deep you’ll understand the souls smell differently and I just look for that. I look for the core and that really inspires me. That is why when you are doing a concert and there are so many souls and the energy is so big, you can’t script that and it’s the most beautiful and gratifying feeling for an artist. How do you look at competition and also there are so many multiple platforms?

Creativity is such an individual expression that there can’t be any competition. Everybody will be different and the only competition I have is me. If I create a song today, and make another song tomorrow, I ought to make it better than the previous ones. So I need to keep improving and my only reference point is my own music and my own songs and the way I have sung them. When I did ‘Naacho Naacho’ for RRR the only thing I could think about was ‘Will I be able to deliver it better than the previous time?’ And then it got the Academy Award, and that’s incredible. Like now Sandeep Reddy Wanga and I are doing Animal and we have come back after Kabir Singh and the only reference was ‘Kaise Hua’. We wanted to make a better song than that. So that’s the way I compete and everybody else is just somebody that I draw inspiration from. Being a part of such successful songs like the Academy Award winning ‘Naacho Naacho’ does that put pressure on you? Not at all. I don’t look at life like that. For me it’s not about numbers. Even if two people are attending my concert I really don’t care. Because those are the 2 people that are connecting to my vibe and my soul. For me what’s important is that I make music which makes me happy and people like me because I am the most common person in the room that can be. I come from a very small place in Uttar Pradesh it’s called Unnao and my journey is not from 2016 to 2023. It’s from 2005 when I did my first audition. So from then to 2023, when my first song came out in 2016, it really made me happy and after that I have lived beyond my dreams. So all of it is just happening to me, I am not pretty particular about numbers. I just want to keep outing out one song after another. I am into creativity. For me I would rather concentrate on my

music and I’d let the stats be handled by somebody who looks behind that but I am not bothered by it. What has been your learning all through? Just work hard, no matter what you are doing. If you are the hardest working person in the room and you are aware enough I think you’ll be the best at it. And that is my thumb rule, I work really hard at everything that I do and I don’t let anybody else take the blame for whatever good and bad that I have done in life. For me it’s just about being the hardest worker in the room and doing it as honestly as I can because music is all about honesty and soul. What’s happening on the personal front? I am a very boring person. Not a lot of exciting things there. Boring with so much of female fan adulation? Men and women, both like my hair (laughs), but I don’t know about me though. I think I’m too packed inside my studio to do anything. Any crazy fan moment? Oh yes. I was doing a concert in Panipat and I stepped off the stage and there were girls were on the left and the boys were on the right. One guy put his hand in my jacket and one girl put her hand in my jacket from the left side. So there were two hands in my jacket from either side… and they tore my jacket. And I was like ‘Oh My God this is exploitation!’ But I understand that the fans get a little crazy, and I love that man. I wish I could touch and meet and hug everybody because they are the ones that have inspired me to become what I am and they are the ones that are inspiring a generation after me especially in Uttar Pradesh and other parts of India where people didn’t consider music as a career and they had to convince

their parents. Now they tell their parents oh this guy from a middle class family has done it and I can do it as well. So I think I owe everything to them. What’s the most romantic thing one could do for you? Just understand what I am singing. I think that’s what people lack in relationships. I think they don’t understand each other they just sing. And when you’re an artist you just hope and pray, even if she or he’s your friend or whatever, the person sitting in front of you should be able understand what you’re trying to say. I think that’s the most romantic thing that two people can do.

A THEME SONG FOR YOUR LIFE WOULD BE… ‘Naacho Naacho’ for sure because for me it’s all about fun and taking life as it comes. WHEN NOT IN THE STUDIO, YOU ARE… Watching TV. I watch a lot of television. My life is all about being in the studio and after that I think TV just transports me to different worlds, cultures. ONE ARTIST YOU REALLY WISH TO COMPOSE FOR OR COLLABORATE WITH? I had really wanted to make songs for Lataji. I have done 3 songs with Ashaji which are very close to me heart, but I also wanted to do it with Lataji. The other day I saw an A.I. cover of Lataji on my song and I saved it! ANY ACTOR YOU WANT TO LEND YOUR VOICE TO? Ranbir Kapoor was the one I hadn’t sung for, but then Animal has happened. Otherwise everybody else I have sung for. Shah Rukh Bhai, Salman Bhai. Aamir Sir I have not sung for and I want to sing for him too. But for me, it’s not about actors, it’s about the directors that I am collaborating with. And directors are the catalyst. WHAT’S THE WAY TO YOUR HEART? Great food. SAHIL SALATHIA IN CONVERSATION WITH AAKANKSHA NAVALSHETYE TALKS ABOUT MAKING A SPLASH WITH HIS PERFORMANCES AND MAKING HEADS TURN WITH HIS SARTORIAL FASHION CHOICES

From studying to be an engineer to stepping into the world of commercials, and from being spotted by Ashutosh Gowarikar for a TV series to diving into Bollywood, Sahil Salathia’s journey has been nothing less than a dream. The platform and screen size notwithstanding, the young actor has made an impressive impact in every role and with several projects under his belt there’s an exciting slate to look forward to. Not just acting chops, when it comes to fashion, Sahil is quite the style chameleon too with a strong penchant for carrying the quirkiest looks with great elan. Charming and vibrant, the actor bowls us over with his refreshing candour as we catch up with him at our office in Dubai. And in a candid tete-a-tete, we talk to Sahil Salathia about his incredible journey and winning hearts one series at a time! How did you start, did you always want to be an actor? The funny thing is I never wanted to be an actor. I’m a small town boy, grew up in Jammu. I was a very bright kid, and very academically inclined, pursuing B-Tech. But in my early 20s, I started doing some television commercials, like I shot one for Samsung in Bangkok. And I was like, wow I’m getting paid for THIS! Ashutosh Gowariker happened to see this commercial and his team got in touch with me for the TV series Everest, for the role of the protagonist. It was a long process then with so many screen tests, but it all worked out. I hadn’t gone to acting school till I did Everest, but because I got good reviews and a few debutant awards also, I decided to pursue it more intently and I joined Barry John for acting. So, it all just worked out organically. That must’ve been quite transformative lifestyle-wise too! It is. There’s a lot of hard work, even the basics. I had studied in a Hindi medium school, so I had to teach myself English. And today however I dress or talk, it’s all self-taught. My father’s a retired police officer, very legendary of course, but in his own space, nothing to do with entertainment. Even my leanings were never towards creative art or drama as such. But God had a plan and that’s how it happened.

And how’s it going now? Like a dream. Sometimes it feels kind of surreal, but again it’s beautiful and my heart’s only full of gratitude and that passion to work harder. You teamed up with Ashutosh Gowariker again for Panipat… Yes, he gave me my Bollywood debut also. Unfortunately inspite of the great reviews, the film couldn’t clock in big numbers at the box office, but it was a great experience. From there, I went on to do POW with Nikhil Advani where I played the antagonist. He’s a filmmaker I love and my favourite movie till date is Kal Ho Naa Ho. When I watched the film I was like, I want to go to New York! That’s the magic of movies, the power of cinema right? It could inspire you, make you dream! What is the kind of genre that really appeals to you? I would want to do a kickass action series or a film. I think I’d be pretty good at that because I’m reasonably fit and I would also love to do an easy-breezy romcom. We’ve seen your Instagram and you have this really quirky fashion side to you with a fluid style… So where does this come from? To be honest, I’ve travelled so much in the past 10-15 years, and when you’re exposed to the world, you see where the world is going. I’m very inspired by the West, their fashion, the actors, they’re always trying interesting different things. Because if as an artist you’re not going to take those chances, who will? In India, I think, actors, especially male actors, take lesser chances when it comes to showcasing their creativity in day-to-day life. Women are incredible. Indian actresses, they are pushing the envelope, they are very good. They are not less than the Hollywood counterparts I would say. But in the men, I would say Ranveer Singh is, like he’s right there. He’s incredible. What a fantastic actor! And even his persona, personality, it’s like every day you see him like he’s

showcasing a different person. He experiments, but the soul is the same… Which actor’s graph do you follow? It’s Aamir Khan. He would probably have a release once in 2 years or 3 years, but it’ll be worth the wait. A film may not work, but look at the efforts he puts in any film… Dangal, 3 Idiots, Rang de Basanti, he’s not the same in any two films. How many actors of his age are putting those efforts physically to bring the character out! One more thing I really like about him is, sometimes you see photos at the airport, and he’s carrying his pillow. I find it very endearing. Thanks to the OTT, the paradigm has shifted to the character than just the star! So it’s a great time for actors across? 100 per cent. It’s a time where talent is very important, where talent is given its due, where if you are a good actor, it will sooner or later come to you, it’s not going to be snatched away from you and I think OTT has definitely played a great role. Because there are such great scripts, there’s so much requirement for great actors because the scripts are written like that. The content quality is very high and I think some of the OTT shows we are creating, I think even at the risk of sounding not so modest, I think Adhura also, like the quality is at par with a bigbudget Bollywood film. So yes it’s a fantastic avenue for showcasing talent. It all depends on the filmmakers also. For a newcomer does an ensemble cast dilute the efforts? I come from that school of acting or school of being rather, that we are supposed to be a community. Humans are supposed to be codependent but at a healthy level. Likewise, in acting, when you want to create a great project, there has to be co-dependency from

people you believe in. Acting is reacting to the action that somebody else has done, so it is actually the energy exchange on camera. For that you need a great ensemble cast, a great bunch of actors. You can’t be a one man army in a film, or in a series for that matter. Actors can shine just to a certain level. It’s about the actors, the directors, the DOP, everybody coming together and creating magic. Quite often it happens that the series wasn’t great but this actor was good. But that’s never going to help the actor or the movie or the series. All the actors will get to the next level in their journey being part of a kickass project. It’s never about ‘he’ was good but the series was bad. It’s never like that. Often it becomes a cinematic choice versus running a house kind of a choice! Yes it is a very strong call. Like I’m very blessed, I’m doing very well but you can always do better. For me creative satisfaction is the most important thing ever.

So what are your upcoming projects? There are a few that will be announced by the respective production houses. There’s a thriller series called ‘Honeymoon Photographer’ and I’m playing one of the protagonists. It’s going to be one of my most interesting pieces of work, so, I’m very excited. What’s with you and your characters dying in most of your projects though including in Adhura? Yes, someone on my Instagram had pointed this out and that was when I really thought about it. I died in Panipat, almost died in Everest, POW I died, Adhura I died, in Paurashpur I died, and then I did this Indie Festival film There Will Be Tomorrow. I’m playing an HIV positive protagonist and I die in this too. Like is there anybody who wants to see me survive (laughs). When you started off what was on your bucket list vs what has changed on that now? The top of my bucket list is really to work with the best filmmakers. Zoya Akhtar is right up there. Like Made In Heaven, it’s human drama at its finest. That’s her magic of filmmaking. And Gully Boy. Then Mr Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Every frame is like a painting. He’s really iconic. sk Maniesh Paul the secret of his ever-smiling face and he asks you for a million dollars. He’s the man with a hundred comebacks lined up. Someone who knows the art of delivery and no, he isn’t a bowler or a gynaecologist. Maniesh Paul always greets you like a long-lost friend and proceeds to tell you a fictional story about your last meeting, which is so entertaining you don’t have the heart to correct him. He is observant as hell so you remember to keep a poker face and mind your ps and qs, otherwise he’s sure to use your gaffes as the material for his next joke. But behind the quick smile, the quick laugh, hides a man who has as many problems as you and I. The difference is that he has learnt to laugh at them, learnt to turn them into punchlines. We’ve been chasing him for an interview for a long time and finally got to chat with him about being the entertainer he is and his aspirations of being a big screen star. Excerpts: Did your life get changed after JugJugg Jeeyo? My life has definitely changed after JugJugg Jeeyo. Before this, many filmmakers lacked confidence in giving me a role. JugJugg Jeeyo has shattered this myth. And the biggest credit goes to Karan Johar sir and my director, Raj Mehta, who gave me a lot of freedom to play the character.

You talk about an actor’s possessions – his new car, house, new hit but there is no news about the loneliness he goes through or the pressure he feels

You must already have an equation with Anil Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, as you have done many shows with them. I was doing this film after a long gap with so many big actors. Yes, they were all friends, but at the end of the day, sharing the stage and the screen with Anilji and Neetuji are two different things. Things change when you are a host and an actor. I had thought it was a cakewalk, but it wasn’t. As an actor, when all these actors get involved in the scene, they become their characters. You had a good relationship with Neetu Kapoor and the late Rishi Kapoor, too. I had a good and different relationship with Rishiji. When he was in the US while undergoing treatment, I was in New York and I had gone to meet him. I remember we were having lunch and he asked me if I was in a hurry. When I said no, he said, “Chal aaja coffee pilata hoon.” Then he took me to his apartment and he made coffee for me. That was a huge moment for November 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 43

me, having him personally making coffee. Even Neetuji is quite humble. I enjoyed working with her. How do you see your journey so far? I have received a lot of love, more than I deserve, whether it is as a host, an RJ, or as an actor. My success didn’t happen overnight. It took a lot of hard work to reach where I’m today. I have faced many rejections. When I came to Mumbai, I did not know anyone. And today, touchwood, I have so many friends in the industry.I don’t have any regrets. I don’t hold any grudges. I don’t have any anger against anyone. Did you go through a low-phase in your career? I did a film called Tere Bin Laden 2 (2016) which was well received and I thought I’d get big banner films after that but that didn’t happen. I was at the top of the hosting game and whatever I’ve achieved is because of hosting. It’ll forever be my first love but I also want to be known as an actor, I also want to win awards. That hunger still remains but the lack of films doesn’t bother me now. I’m positive that it’ll happen. How do you define success? Your journey is a success. How happy you are from within is a success. We don’t talk about our inner lives at all. That’s where the germ of the idea for my podcast came from. What I like about it is that people come to my show not to talk about their work but about themselves. As actors, we always wear a mask. unaware of. Bharati Singh is a good friend but even I didn’t know half the things she revealed when she came on my podcast. You are already a celebrity. What other successes are you aiming for? Stardom is decided by the masses. Let the people decide how high you have reached. When I initially shifted to Mumbai, I wanted a bigger house, a bigger car, like everyone else. But then I realised that more than all this, family is important. So for me, success lies in the quality time I get to spend with my family. I don’t go to late night parties. I rush home after work to be with them and I make sure that in the morning, I get to spend at least an hour with them. Today, I have all the perks of stardom but tomorrow,I might not have them. But my family will always be there with me. They keep me grounded. They never treat me like a star. And my wife Sanyukta keeps our children grounded as well. They’re being brought up as normal children. We’ve always maintained that like everyone their father too has a job. They shouldn’t feel they’re the children of someone important or famous. When you host reality shows or award shows, what is the biggest challenge you face? You always have this fear whether you’d be able to make people laugh or not. Yes, you have a script but you don’t know whether the jokes will work or fall flat. You have to improvise a lot, gauging their mood. And remember, they have come to see interaction. So you interact with the other guests, interact with the audience, the contestants, if it’s a reality show. You have to come up with things on the spot to make the proceedings more lively. Do you feel conscious when you have to interact with the big stars?

During my initial days, yes, I was scared, I was conscious. Like I’ve heard so many stories about Salman Khan so I was conscious about pulling his leg but he took it all sportingly. In fact, no one has ever complained about me till date. Be it Amitabh Bachchan saab or Shah Rukh Khan sir or any big star, they’ve all been sporting and cooperative. And I’ve always given them due respect. I always think of them as my brothers and sisters. They’re like family and that feeling will always remain in my heart throughout my life. How do you keep your smile up and perform even when you’re hurting from the inside? You should never let what’s eating you inside show on your face.That’s what makes us performers. Recently, I was hosting a show and Sanyukta was calling constantly. My makeup man informed me that ma’am had called up three-four times. When I called her back,

I got to know that a close relative had passed away. I couldn’t wrap-up and rush home as I was in the middle of the shoot. I told her to handle it and went back to the shooting as if nothing had happened. I was deadpanning jokes while grieving on the inside. Have you ever felt stereotyped? It is easy to say that this actor can only do comedy; this one can show his six packs; this one can only do action; the mindset of the makers needs to change. There are many actors who have never realised their full potential because people only saw them through a prism of stereotype. It’s only when you look into the full range of an actor that great content will come.

Do you ever get angry? I don’t get angry easily. When I feel anger coming, I move away from that place and that person. Because I know that you might say something in anger, which will hurt you more later. Konkona Sen Sharma has been in the industry for decades now and has established herself not only as an actress of many shades in the Bengali and Hindi film industries but also as a perceptive director with a penchant for storytelling. Currently, she’s being lauded for her short film The Mirror, a part of the Lust

Stories 2 anthology featuring Tillotama Shome and Amruta Subhash in the lead. Her nuanced narrative featuring the female gaze and desires has hit the bull’s eye with the audience. In an engaging conversation, Konkona reiterates how she is an actor first and then a director, both roles driven by passion and intent. She also talks about the influence her mother, Aparna Sen, has

and when she said Amruta Subhash, I instantly agreed and we reached out to her, and that’s how it happened.

Did you ever see yourself helming a subject like Lust Stories after doing a film like A Death in the Gunj? No, I didn’t have any plans. It is not like I had any plans to become a director but in A Death In the Gunj, I felt the need to share that story. Then I was just busy with my family; I had taken up a few acting gigs and hadn’t thought of it. Ashi Dua, who is the producer, was the one who got in touch with me and asked if you would like to do a short film for Lust Stories. I had seen the previous anthology, and I liked it. So I told her that I do not have anything in mind but give me some time and I’ll figure it out. And then I just got into it.

You’ve mentioned that you had no story initially. A friend of mine

told me this story about how she came home early with a migraine and encountered her domestic worker in bed with someone else, and in that situation, the maid was fired. That is the most regular course of things. But I immediately knew there was something important here, and I told her I was going to use it, and she, of course, laughed. I found it interesting how everything was just there—lust,

class, these two women. And then what would have happened if she had been able to confront the worker? That is what I imagined in my head—how she would want to confront her, but then she wouldn’t be able to tell her because she wouldn’t have the words. And then Ishita herself enjoyed watching it; she was in conflict. And both women are doing something wrong. Both are inherently unequal, and even towards the end, their positions in society are not equal. I didn’t want to show they are now equal because of this situation. I just wanted to see how it played out.

How did you manage to get it all done without multiple retakes?

Many times, when we are depicting those things in films that we go through as normal human beings. This was an unusual circumstance and I wanted to push it high but she immediately got it. Tillotama is very good at comedy. Amruta and Srikant, the guy who played her husband—I was blessed to get such divine actors, they got it and it was magical. When we are shooting, a lot of it is always planned—even the positions, where will you be watching them from, where will the cameras be, we

Which is your favourite place to enjoy Bengali food in Mumbai? I am very lucky to have one of the loveliest Bengali cooks at home. I have had her for 15 years, and I get great Bong food at home. What are your favourite Bengali dishes? I love kosha maangsho, Bengali Biryani with aloo and egg, Luchi and shaada aloo torkari, Illish maach bhaaja, etc. Do you have a sweet tooth? No, thank God! I do love chocolate, but I do not have a strong sweet tooth. What is your go-to comfort food? Chicken and rice—any form, any cuisine— chicken and rice What’s the most fascinating cuisine you have tasted in a different city or country and enjoyed? I am not a fan of raw food; I have tasted sushi but my taste hasn’t developed towards raw preparations.

That I don’t know. This is something from my imagination. I saw two thieves stealing pleasure from each other. They have both done something wrong. . People do make mistakes. It is to understand why people are living the way they are and also take responsibility for that action. Ishita apologised to Seema at the end of it. Seema could own her desires too.

Were there any films by other directors that you watched to understand the language and treatment that are needed to address this genre?

Not specifically for this film, but there is a film called The Piano Teacher that came out many years ago. It came to mind because of the way it portrayed

female sexuality, and all women are not the same, everyone’s desires are different. What I feel is that the context of showing female desires has not been nuanced, it has been basic. It’s probably exciting to be able to relate to it because we are able to see it with nuance, with mistakes, with fire and with consequences.

What is the conversation like with your mother? Both of you are actresses and directors?

We are great friends. She’s so cool. Honestly, sometimes I can’t relate to my friends when they speak about having a generational gap with their parents and not getting along with them because my mother has always been a friend to me. We have our disagreements and arguments, of course. But she started working at a very young age, and she has her respect as an individual. She has always lived life on her terms, she doesn’t care what other people

think and in that way, she has helped me not live up to other people’s expectations. Not having that pressure. She has been progressive and liberal and has never had any generational gaps with my friends or me. It’s just a human-to-human thing. Her identity to me is not just that she is my mother, and my identity to her is not just that I am her daughter; we see each other as individuals.

What kind of cinema would you talk about or watch together?

She was very particular about the fact that I shouldn’t be watching mainstream Bengali or Hindi

films, this was the ‘80s and ‘90s when I grew up. Of course, I watched some here and there and loved some of them as well. But we watched a lot of world cinema, art house films, whether they were Bengali or from the South. In the ‘90s, I remember when The Bold and The Beautiful used to come on Star TV and everyone used to watch it and she would come and say, ‘No no this is crap, you can’t watch it’ and of course, I would whine but listen to her. Of course, I watched a few episodes here and there. Then when I would only be reading Enid Blyton, she said that now that it’s done, read some other books as well.

Yeah yeah. We read a lot. Sometimes we would be fighting over the same book on a holiday. I remember going on a road trip with my mother and taking turns to read the same book, and both of us loved it.

How different are you two as actors and directors?

We have the same sensibilities, by and large. But we are quite different. She has directed some 10–15 films. I have barely directed one and a half, so we can’t be compared at all. I am what I am because of her, she is the biggest

influence in my life.

Your character in Wake Up Sid! is one that every girl keeps going back to.

I get so much love for Wake Up Sid! even today. The credit for it goes to Ayan Mukerji. It was his first film and he smashed it out of the park. He created Aisha, it’s his story; it’s his film. It is fantastic what he has done.

When are we going to see you in a Bengali film again?

I am open to a good script. When I get something good that excites me and is a good project, I am happy to go with it.

There’s an almost seamless transition as Amit Sadh moves from playing one challenging character to the next. Having claimed his spot on the acting circuit, the Kai Po Che! actor has earned much appreciation in all his screen outings as he transforms effortlessly in the most intense and often edgy roles. Juggling between movies and series with elan, the actor has carved his own niche whether it’s Bollywood or the OTT. And seeing him push the envelope further is the actor’s most recent release Duranga Season 2 on ZEE5 Global in which he plays a rather dark character. We caught up with the versatile star ahead of the show’s release and talk to him about his passion for interesting stories and penchant for playing challenging characters

Duranga Season 1 on ZEE5 Global had ended on a cliff-hanger note and Duranga Season 2 was highlyanticipated, what’s your head space like ahead of the release?

Very excited, like you said that the Season 1 had ended on quite an interesting turn and that’s what the beauty of a good thriller is, to keep you on the edge of your seats and waiting to see what happens next.

Your character in the show, Sammit Patel is at the crux of everything that’s happening…

Without giving out too much and getting in trouble for revealing anything at this point, all I can say is that it’s a very interesting world which everyone is seeing. And my character in this season is shown that he wakes up from the coma and he just wants his identity back. And in terms of the whole story that was existing in season 1, it’s like how he gets entangled with the whole ‘getting my identity back’ with everyone, with Gulshan’s character. There’s something I want to share with you, sometimes you know how people say, I know it’s with a lot of love, somebody also wrote an article that “Season 1 mein Amit Sadh ka chota role tha, Season 2 mein vo main lead hain” It’s just that a story is not like that. You know what I mean? This was always a two-part series and I was told that Season 1 we need these many days from you and this is your character and in Season 2 this is what happened and the prominence is on what happens after you wake up and then we actually show that storyline because in Season 1 there were a lot of question marks. That’s the setting or the narrating pattern. And of course in Season 2 you see me much more often.

How was it for you playing a character that is so edgy and dark?

I’ll be very honest, I’ve never done a character like this. I mean I’ve done thrillers, like Breathe was a thriller too, but this is different. This is wicked. I mean the whole show is wicked. This show could have been called ‘Wicked’ instead of ‘Duranga’ (laughs).

Like you said, the character has wicked shades, how much do you enjoy having that grey shade to your character? I know the trailer gives it away and this is the kind of series where the audience knows what is going on but the characters in

the series don’t know what’s going on. So there’s not much hiding or staying behind the curtains but I would still want the audience to experience and not give them any tonality. And I always feel people say hero and anti-hero, I have never taken a character like that. I think it’s a character. This one is just blurred inside him. There’re these blurred lines. And for me one of the most amazing things for this character is that there’s a very childlike innocence in him. When he’s angry, he’s angry. When he’s happy, he’s happy and you also have to imagine that he’s out of coma after 14 years. I’m not medically that equipped and I’m not aware how person would be after 14 years of coma but then it’s an amazing thing to create a character’s imagination. So I have kind of imaginative EQ, IQ, behaviour and body language of this character and my basic intention from day 1 for myself was to do something which entertains people. Always kind of spikes the insulin.

And there’s a face-off expected, that would be really something to watch out for?

Yeah, exactly like a face-off. It is an apt title for all that is happening in the series.

You are known to bring in a lot of gravitas and intensity to every character you play and all through you have been making some very strong, brave and even risky choices playing very versatile and challenging characters…

Well, first of all, thank you for acknowledging, it means a lot! Whether it’s this role or any other character in any movie or series, the most basic rule is that I like being honest to myself. Many years back, I think I heard George Clooney or some other actor say in some conversation, “I do one for the money, one for the heart,” or something like that. But I don’t have any such thing. For me it’s only for the heart. I came here to do movies, I came here to tell stories. So, I am just trying to remain honest and true to myself and at the same time. I’ve been very fortunate that makers, producers, they keep throwing challenges at me or they keep giving me work that makes me push myself harder. Even the media industry, they have been nothing less than loving towards me.

What was it that made you say a yes

to Duranga?

To be very honest, I did not know the script of Season 2. It was a leap of faith. I knew the genre and they gave me a little gist. And you know in movies, in our industry, things happen on faith and trust. But I had some kind of like a bechaini, a restlessness and I was a little anxious hoping the script is nice and I hope I don’t have to do anything silly because till today I’ve only done scripts that are bound and ready. I just hoped they know what I’m doing, I know what I’m doing, and there’re no surprises. So for me it was a big leap of faith but I knew the producer and the creators of this series and I just had faith. And I also had faith on ZEE5 Global. So I just went on and took like this leap of faith. When I finally read the script when it came to me, I had a sigh of relief. And then at the same time I had this ‘dhak’ like what! When, how, where… so I think that was just a very brief moment because I realized how deep this one goes. I always wanted to do something different and new and here’s the opportunity. I just put my head down and I just dived, that’s it.

You do seem to be quite a favourite with ZEE5 Global?

This is like my third or fourth project with them and they’ve always been fair with me. They’ve never let me down and they’ve given me great work.

OTT is huge and you seem to have found your space and made your mark in it… Yes, OTT is a giant. I think it has shrunk the world and it’s a big component or a big aspect of the inclusivity that has started. The kind of stories that we can tell, the kind of series you can make. We’re adapting, we’re going into territories we never imagined to be in. So, it’s a great space to be in!

How has the journey been for you overall?

You know as an actor the biggest excitement and motivation is to be able to explore, experiment, evolve and keep pushing the envelope to surprise your audience and yourself too. And as long as I am being able to pursue that, I would say that the going’s been good. To be accepted and so loved by the audience through all the ups and downs, to be acknowledged for the work and having earned that faith where I have industry watch out for what I have to bring to the table next, I think that’s being blessed and I do feel grateful and blessed.

Watching Junoon perform LIVE in Dubai was nothing short of nostalgia as the band’s members Ali Azmat, Salman Ahmad and Brian O’Connell belted out one hit song after another - from ‘Sayonee’ to ‘Pyaar Bina’ and ‘Dosti’! The world-renowned band known to many as the ‘U2 of South Asia’ blends a powerful arena rock sound with the epic tranquillity of Sufi poetry. Junoon has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, including the multiplatinum albums ‘Azadi’ and ‘Parvaz’ and together the band has spawned numerous hits. Pioneers of Sufi Rock, the band that started out in the 90s and ruled the charts with their soulful rock songs has completed 35 years since, but as I caught up with the trio backstage, there seems to have been no time or love lost between them. Amidst the excitement of having performed a super successful show that celebrated 25 years of their hit album Azadi at Dubai’s Coca Cola Arena, the trio seemed to have enjoyed every moment just as much as their fans did. They saunter in teasing each other and laughing over inside jokes. Their bromance and camaraderie with each other speaks volumes and the fun and candid banter continues as we talk to the musical veterans about their music and Junoon!

You totally rocked the evening, it was magical and the crowds just loved it…? Salman Ahmad: The audience in Dubai, you know we’ve been coming here for a long time, but it was so loud, I couldn’t hear myself playing guitar. Brian O’Connell: It was wonderful It is amazing to have you three come together… How has the experience been for you? Brian: When we’re playing up there, we feed off of the energy of our fans and tonight it was almost an overdose. It really was nice. Everyone was getting into it, everyone was right there visible, we could feel their love, people were enjoying it and that makes us really enjoy what we do. The crowd is half the show. So, among the three of you, who’s always been the ladies’ man? Ali Azmat: Of course me (laughs). Brian and Salman: Of course him!

So, how do you think has the overall music industry changed with respect to that genre of music? Also, the overall scene as today you have that many more platforms like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok… Salman: Yes and then there’s the AI… But I just want to see Roger Waters, Pink Floyd… His entire show is so powerful and he’s singing songs from 50 years

People were like this man is crazy and then seeing this music tonight… I mean this music is so much relevant to us. I kept saying bring out some organizations again and again because it affects every day’s life. But the kids today, I mean they have seven seconds of concentration span. Which is why we wonder we’re still around after 35 years, it’s been 35 years since we’ve been doing this and so our fans who are 15 or 10 or 12 are now 50 years old just like all of us. So I mean they stick to us which is a good thing. Salman: There’s a girl called Sayoni out there who was 27 years old. So if the song came out 25 years ago, the

fan would have been 2 years old. Tell us one secret about each other? Salman: Okay there is this one thing that I’m such a bad liar. Like my face will show that. So if I say things, they have to be real otherwise people don’t believe it… Brian: That is the truth! Ali: I don’t believe him… I don’t believe any of this (laughs). Can you share any interesting anecdote or any fun incident that’s happened while you were performing on stage? Ali: There have been many times where mentally you were completely blank and I forget lyrics all the time and today I forgot like lyrics to a few songs and many other things. So I’m blank again (laughs).

The Great Indian Film Festival and its segment The Rising Stars will be back this month. How was it conceptualized and how has it evolved since then?

The festival is co-founded by me and my wife Rinku Paul, who is an educator for last over 17 years. Like me, she too has a great contribution to make towards the festival. We started The Great Indian Film Festival in Gurgaon through a very modest screening known as Open Frame where we would screen award winning short films. In no time it gained popularity and evolved into The Great Indian Film Festival and we hosted the first chapter in 2020 at PVR, New Delhi. Last year we were invited by FICCI Government of India to bring our festival to the Expo 2020 Dubai where we showcased over 65 films from more than 25 countries.

So what can we expect this time around, what are going to be the highlights this year?

Like every year, the highlight of our festival is that we have a great representation from short filmmakers and documentary filmmakers from around the world. And this time also we have films from over 25 countries taking part in this year’s edition happening at the Reel Cinemas Dubai Mall on 22nd and 23rd of November.

Tell us more about The Rising Stars?

The Festival in its initial year itself had to go through the setback of Covid 19 where the world was locked, and so were the children. And that’s when we decided to get them busy by encouraging them to make films from home on their phones itself. After Covid lifted, it took the form of Rising Stars, where we encourage young and upcoming talent from all over UAE and

India, in which children make films, and we showcase them along with experienced filmmakers in a movie theatre.

How can one participate and what are the takeaways?

We are on Film Freeway and now will be inviting films for our 2024 edition. Filmmakers from around the world can participate in it through our website or Film Freeway. This is a great opportunity for upcoming talents and budding filmmakers especially as their works are showcased on such a massive scale.

What are the major challenges you’ve had to overcome in presenting a festival of this magnitude and making people aware about it?

Running a festival is not easy as it involves a great commitment towards short films and documentaries. But we are grateful and thankful to some of the big industry stalwarts such as Mr Gulshan Grover, Mr Anupam Kher, Mr Shekhar Kapur, Mr Vivek Oberoi, Sonakshi Sinha, Maniesh Paul, and more who have always supported these talented short filmmakers through our festival and we have been able to arrange for a grand showcase for them.

Tell us more about your interest and passion for cinema as an active founder, but also as a movie buff? I am an MBA finance and not educated into filmmaking or cinema, I forayed TV shows and films seven years back, and found my love for stories and films and this festival is my creative outlet.

Going ahead what’s the vision?

Our vision with TGIFF is to make every year’s event even bigger and also we want to support production of short films in the years to come.

DIMPLE KAPADIA Dimple Kapadia plays the enigmatic wife of a major arms dealer in Mumbai in Christopher Nolan’s film Tenet. But she pulls a bait-andswitch when she reveals herself to be the one making the decisions. “A masculine front in a man’s world has its uses,” her character tells the Protagonist (John David Washington). Her natural acting style complemented the tense, thrilling tone of the film.

Amrish Puri portrayed many iconic characters during his career with his role as Mola Ram in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom being one of his most well-known in the West. Amrish was a very busy actor when Steven’s team chose him for the role and he was working on nearly 22 films at the time. When Spielberg found out, he flew to India to audition Puri and cast him in the role. After the shoot wrapped, Spielberg signed a handwritten note to Puri, which the family has preserved to this day. “To my best villain, you are unique in all the world as a bad guy and in the real world we live in. You are a terrific human being. I loved every minute of our work together and can’t wait to work with you again,” the note read.

SQUID GAME: THE CHALLENGE

The biographical drama is based on the National Emergency implemented during the reign of former Prime Minister of India, the late Indira Gandhi.

The action-thriller is the third installment in the spy universe of Tiger played by Salman Khan and Zoya played by Katrina Kaif. The film marks the entry of Emraan Hashmi as the villain setting the ground for Tiger to step in and save not just the country but his loved ones too.
