Kartik Aaryan, who has been basking in the success of his horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, is currently making headlines for his upcoming action drama Shehzada. The movie will also star Kriti Sanon. Interestingly, there were reports that Shehzada would be hitting the screens on November 4 this year. However, as per a recent update, the movie has now been pushed to 2023. Shehzada will mark Kartik’s second collaboration with Kriti after their 2019 release, Luka Chupi. Apart from the action drama, Kartik will be seen in Hansal Mehta’s Captain India, wherein he will be seen as a pilot; Shashank Ghosh’s Freddy with Alaya F; and Sameer Vidhwans’ next. With so many hits to your credit now, are you more confident about your film’s release as compared to back when you started off as a newcomer?
I think I’m just blessed to work with such fabulous actors and to have the kind of choices of scripts that I have been getting to choose from… What else does an actress need… you have a great script, a great role, great co-actors and amazing directors to work with, so I look at it like an entire package! Filmmaking is a team effort, so what matters is that the team needs to be on the same page, no matter what the temperament. And I’m fortunate enough to be getting one film after another with the best filmmakers and at a rather initial stage of my career to be working with names like Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra or Gowtam (Tinnanuri), for me that’s an achievement.

You know honestly I’m the kind of person who believes that once you’ve given the exam, it’s done, now whatever the result. It’s the same when it comes to movies. You do the best you can. Then it all depends on the audience and I always appreciate the feedback, you grow with each film. But yes, I’m definitely more confident as an actor when it comes to the process.

You have within a short span of time worked with some of the topmost stars as well as acclaimed filmmakers… But they all also come with their own temperaments. How’s the experience been for you?

Yes, but it’s not just the heroes (laughs). I always ask what the climax of the film is and feel how’s that impacting me, because that’s what we go home with and that for me is very important and crucial. So, that’s largely my deciding factor! When I was a child, movies were my escape, like it is for most of us. And I think if I’m successful today, it is because of these characters I had been inspired by and somehow I too want to make that kind of a difference to someone’s life. And movies are that medium of entertainment where people often turn to. Be it in Toofan or Jersey or Dhamaka… the climaxes have been most important. So not just the actors or underdogs, I also get attracted to different roles. Like playing Vidya (in Jersey) was a very difficult role, because in all my roles so far, I’ve always been like happy and smiling. But Vidya had different shades, the character has layers to it. So I am happy to be associated with a film that would change the way people think, not just about themselves, but also people around them. When I was offered Jersey, I wanted to be a part of

acting, but I am someone who likes to derive, channelize and invest my memories, experiences or observations based on circumstances to that scene when required. Besides, being an actor it’s important to be an individual too and disconnect from all the glamour and stardom atleast for some time. I like to be aware of life, of what’s happening around you. With fame and stardom, things change, but I realized that I had stopped living my life and that it’s just not me. Obviously you have to oblige fans and all that, but you can’t stop living your life. And I feel it’s very important to not carry your characters home. That’s my job as an actor and I leave it there once done. When I did Love Sonia, it had taken me months to

You stepped into Bollywood with Love Sonia, a film that looked challenging film on multiple levels including the intense character you essay. But you pulled it off with an effortless brilliance. Was that because as an actor you have done television earlier or dabbled in Marathi films or it’s just your passion for cinema? I think it’s an amalgamation of everything. I have always been a student of cinema, and I always study characters. In fact, I watch movies not just to be entertained, but I study them, some I watch over and over again and every time you watch a good performance, you can explore something new about it. No, I think it is unfair to say this because you can’t compare the sun and the moon… Each shine at their own time. All I focus on are honing my skills, my strong points… Obviously I want to work on improving my other skills like dancing, but acting is really always a work in progress as you constantly evolve and grow with each film. And in all of this, never do I think about wanting to compare or being compared. I mean all actresses out there are good at something that maybe I am not, and maybe I am

If I am torturing myself to go through the pain that my character is going through, then it’s being unfair to Mrunal - as a person. So I believe that it’s important to disconnect to the character once the cameras stop rolling. I know that a lot of actors do prefer the method

And what’s your take on romance? I am so, so, romantic… like I can’t tell
Tell us about your upcoming projects…
There’s the remake of Thadam happening with Aditya Roy Kapoor and I’m very excited about it as it’s an extraordinary role. Then there’s Pippa and a few other very interesting films that are already underway. So yes, exciting work happening.

Your film Sita Ramam co-starring Dulquer Salmaan is an out-and-out romantic film and everyone’s been raving about the amazing chemistry you have on screen…
get out of that phase. I got so much into it, it really affected me mentally. So now I try to not carry the characters traits and experiences back home. Attachment should not be on a long term basis.
So what can we catch you doing when you aren’t shooting?
I’d either be travelling or eating and then trying to burn off those calories (laughs). All my friends know that my weakness is food, and travel. So whenever I get a holiday I just book a ticket and pack my bags and leave.

Well yes, romance somehow feels like my genre. That’s why even when it comes to chemistry, it just works out good with all my heroes. You know romance is a part of everybody’s life and

Who’s your celebrity crush… My crush... that’s a long list there But(laughs).there’s one who’s always been there on that list… I have this massive crush on Keanu Reeves. Be it as John Wick or in Matrix… I’ve always liked him. Like even today, every time I see his photos, even the old ones rotating on the internet, I am just like when will I get to see him.
…A dream come true! Yes, that would be the best day of my life. You know how they say that if they get an Oscar they can retire, for me if I get to share screen with Keanu or even Meryl Streep, I will retire happily. It’s an ultimate dream.
Yes, absolutely. I am just happy and feel so blessed to be an actor… to be a part of this industry and be doing what I so love and enjoy. Being an actor, I get to explore so many characters, live so many lives, travel to so many places... But yes, it’s all the more exciting to be an actor when times are changing. We are celebrating women of all ages, content on OTT is so great, there is no shelflife, there is no formula. We are celebrating stories not just heroes.

HOW WOULD YOU DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE TWO GENRES WHEN DESIGNING FOR A PERIOD DRAMA LIKE PADMAAVAT AND THEN DOING A HORROR-COMEDY LIKE BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2?

R: We are thoroughly enjoying our journey in the realm of Bollywood costume design. Working with and interacting with some of the most creative individuals of our generation has been an enriching experience. To be able to make costumes that help push forward the movie’s narrative and bring to life the director’s vision, to be a part of the movie’s success in our own way, is a fulfilling feeling.
Inspired by old miniature paintings and murals, Rimple and Harpreet Narula’s
H: With Padmaavat, we were designing costumes for four historical figures. We were dealing with characters from four different provinces: Padmavati, who was a Sinhalese princess turned Rajput queen; Ratan Singh, who was a Rajput king, Khilji, who had Mongol/Afghan lineage; and Mehrunissa, who was a tribal Ottoman princess. Hence, we had to do intensive research to get the costumes right. We made regular trips to the Jaipur and Calico museums, and read documented travellers’ accounts from the 15th to 17th centuries. I’ve also read various books on that era. The fabrics and the colour palette we used were earthy and organic, mixed with luxe kitsch elements. Given the varied origins of these characters, we got an opportunity to work with an eclectic set of references: Mughal and pre-Mughal costumes; tribal attire from Kazakhstan and Turkey; and warrior costumes from the various princely Rajput states. H: For Alia’s appearance at Berlinale this year, we wanted to create an outfit that would bring together the certain sense of joie de vivre that Alia is associated with, as well as nuances of her character’s style on the red carpet. The ensemble had to be reminiscent of the iconic Gangubai portrayed by Alia and at the same time reflect our brand’s aesthetic philosophy and love for vintage. Once all the details of the ensemble were finalised, we started on the look and

feel, embroideries, etc. We wanted the overall effect to be sublime and ethereal, so we decided to reference some Edwardian and French lace shawls that are part of our archives. Over the course of two weeks, the saree was handcrafted at our atelier using various embroidery techniques.

For Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, we were dealing with a more contemporary period as well as the double role portrayed by Tabu. It was a classic story of the good sister and her evil twin, which is also reflected in the costumes we designed. For Anjulika (the good sister), it was delicate chiffon and georgette sarees in a soft pastel colour story, while for Manjulika (the evil sister), we used heavier fabrics and a dark, gloomy colour palette centred around black. The surface ornamentation also reflects that.

The sanitary workers, the frontline workers who were most affected by Covid in the first wave. No one was talking about them or to them. That video might not have helped a single person, but I believe you can either influence people in a good way or bad. So, I chose the former. I wanted to tell them that okay, you can’t help them financially, but at least make sure of their well-being. It was a very humble attempt to just put it out there.
Johnny Sins, who’s like such a phenomenon. I really wanted to do an episode with him, but I never thought of reaching out to him. He had tweeted something and I re-tweeted it and he DMed me asking if I could connect him to a translator because he had started his YouTube channel. I helped him with that and when we spoke about the chat show I told him that I wanted him to be in the second episode. After SRK, I didn’t want the talk show to only go the Bollywood way. Well, I am lazy. Like if you’ve seen the laziest person in the world, I am slightly lazier than him/ her. Also I love sleeping. In fact, there were times when I have missed a day. Like I slept on a Tuesday and I woke up on a Thursday. There are days when I sleep for two to three hours. Because I am nocturnal, I can’t work in the day, I can only work in the night. And this has been happening with me since the past four years that I’m sleeping at 7 in the morning and I wake up at 10 am - that’s three hours of sleep. So, sometimes when I sleep, I sleep non-stop. My mum used to say that I work on the US timelines, ‘Tu vahi ke liye sahi hai,” she used to say. The third thing - I don’t like talking. Like I am here in Dubai since two days now and this is the maximum I have spoken to. I don’t like conversing much. This one’s an exception!
WHERE DOES ALL OF THAT CREATIVITY COME FROM, WHAT’S YOUR SECRET? There is no secret. I love acting, I love music. I remember in school, I knew that I can’t study, but I wasn’t a bad student. I scored 75 per cent in school. Even then there’ve always been ideas that kept brewing up in my head. And I had that urge, 24/7 to put them out somewhere. And I keep writing. In fact, I love writing. I read a lot, not books per se, but ‘shayari’. I really want to learn Urdu… So there’s so much to do and my head is always brimming with different ideas.

What drew you to this project?
the OTT platforms coming in. And at any point of time, you know how people love to say, “the 90s actor”, so I said you know but even if it is, I don’t want to be the 90s kind of actor. I did not want that to be the comment. So, as an artiste it’s not unique to be evolving and adapting all the time, but when you’re doing something new, it is always a challenge. That nervousness was definitely there.
Oh, totally different because the way of working has changed a lot. The way you work has changed too. Goldie (Husband, filmmaker Goldie Behl) always told me that I’d enjoy working now. I didn’t really believe him at that point of time, but I do now. I really enjoyed the experience also because back when I was working in movies, I think other than me or maybe one or two female artists, there were no other girls, no other women on the set. And here, my team itself is like an all-girls team and there are so many other women on the set. The atmosphere is so much more fun and nicer. Other than that also, it’s more real now, the kind of content and audience is also evolved especially in the last two years with
I THINK THE BEST INVESTMENT IN LIFE THAT I MADE, I REALIZED, ARE THE RELATIONSHIPS. AND FOR ANYBODY AND EVERYBODY I WILL ONLY SAY THAT THERE IS NOTHING MORE VALUABLE THAN THAT.
I wanted to play something relatable, wanted a story that was relevant and when I read this script, I just loved it. The story is very well written! That was the biggest reason for me to pick it up. Also I was keen on playing a character that has a strong voice. And I think Amina Qureshi in the series has a very strong voice, and yet there are vulnerabilities and I think that’s what is beautiful about her. So, I had great material to build on. Also it has a great director, amazing cast - Shriya (Pilgaonkar) and Jaideep (Ahlawat) are fabulous performers - and the team was superb to work with. It’s a combination of all these things. This show ticked all the right boxes for me and it all just fell into place perfectly.
Well, my son has grown up and I think there’s much more ‘me time’ I would say. I don’t want to be the helicopter parent anymore who’s constantly around him and he needs the space too, so the best thing to do is get busy and also get back to doing what I realize, I love doing the most. So here I am, back to doing fiction. It’s been a while since I did it, so I was very excited about it.
I know it’s been a long time since I came here, but Dubai always manages to surprise me because every time you come there’re lots of new things coming up.
Overall how different is it now from back then?
I missed being on screen too. I didn’t realize how much till I got back onto it.
You have made a stunning debut on the OTT with the Zee5 Original series The Broken News that also sees you star in a fiction format after almost a decade. So what made you return to the screen with this one?
Yes, the series is doing rather well and you’ve been getting some great reviews for this... That’s encouraging and good to know. For me, coming after a long time, it’s a different world. So it was interesting, and I was a bit scared wondering if I would be able to do this!
When you look at the content today, do you wish they had such content back in the 90s too?
What is it that you’re looking for in a project today?
You’ve tided over the lowest phase health-wise, seen the ups and downs with so much grace and grit, where do you draw your strength from?

Do you feel that the male stars have been more privileged in the professional space?
That’s the story that goes all around the world and it has always been the case. It is patriarchy, but I’m happy that the conversation has started, and people are talking about it. Earlier they wouldn’t even think about it. But today things are changing. Also, I think most of us, we’ve all continued working. Maybe in different ways but we’ve continued working. And the fact that we are having this conversation itself is an amazing thing. But I wouldn’t say that “oh we didn’t get an opportunity” because I don’t think I’m that kind of a person. I mean life is different, world is different,
I think family and friends is what it is all about. And

Well I have a chance to do it now. There’re no regrets. At that time what I was doing was the norm of the day and touchwood, it worked good. I mean I cannot complain about what came my way. So, I did well, and I have a chance to do it again.
What about your son Ranveer? Any plans of him joining the industry? He hates me talking about him. Now that he’s all grown up, he should do his talking himself - if he deserves to be talked about. He has to earn it.

Eventually it’s the relationships and I don’t mean just the family that you’re born with but also the family that you build around. I think the best investment in life that I made, I realized, are the relationships. And for anybody and everybody I will

I’m looking at different things I could do. It depends on what is the story and what is the character that I’m playing. And I just want to play my age. Because I do think for me life is just about beginning. I don’t even think it’s a halfway mark. Today there are so many different kinds of stories being told and this space was not there earlier. So it feels like it just happened for Andme.the one thing that life has taught me is to enjoy the process. When I was working in the 90s, it was more about getting a paycheck… there were responsibilities, paying the rent... The paycheck is still important (laughs), but I want to enjoy the process and not just the end result. I wish I was always in this kind of a space but better late than never.

It’s all just music! I’m not a very complicated person, so I have a very simple way of looking at life even as an artiste. You go to the studio, there’s a song and the only aim is to have fun creating that song and enjoying the process. I forget everything else. When I’m in the studio, I just like to bond with that song and connect with it and express it in my way.

YOU’VE BEEN VERY FEARLESS WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING THE SONGS. DO THE NUMBERS AFFECT YOU? I always look at music as music because when I started there wasn’t any Facebook or Instagram. I mean if tomorrow there’s no social media would you stop doing what you do? So I think it shouldn’t be about an external force, it should be about yourself, the real reason why you’d do this. It should be about you and not because someone expects numbers from you. I’ve never been motivated by that. What motivates me is the feedback I get from my listeners. If my song can connect with someone, that’s motivating. So, I don’t go by numbers. I go by the connection that people have to that song.

There is no such one song, one project, one award that will change your life forever. It doesn’t work like that. I think it is a myth that we’ve been fed as children that you make it there and you’ll be fine. There’s no such thing. I think your entire life is a game-changer. You need to keep working every single day. There is no one day that’ll change you. It’s the other way around. Even after you’ve had a failure, and if you pick up yourself and go back to work the next day. And work because you want to do it. I think that’s a game changer because everyone sees your successes. But between those successes there are many failures which only you know of. And when you get up and you go back to work, that shows the sheer love you have for what you do. My playlist keeps changing. If I hear something I like, I immediately shazam it, but yes, there are some things that are perennial and that never leave your playlist, like Sting. Also Jazz numbers, that’s an eternal genre. So, you know they don’t leave the playlist. But you keep adding to it.
When you’re starting, you obviously have no idea what’s going to happen with the song. And this is my 16th year, and I still don’t know anything. I’ll be very honest. Because there’s one thing that, once we finish the song, it’s not ours. It belongs to every listener. So hamara kaam itna hi hota hai ki hum usko pyaar se gaa lete hain. I think that we think way too much and we feel too little. We must feel more. I think that’s what music does, no matter who fronts it. If it’s not making you feel then, I’m sorry you’ve not hit the spot.

Yes, it’s not meant to be in the forefront. The beauty is that the background music is not meant to stand out, but blend in, complement the scene to create and enhance a visual experience, because that’s what cinema is and the audio happens to be a part of that visual experience. With the right scene and right background music, you’ll feel even more than you would if there was no music. Be it comical or emotional or a
National Award winning Julius Packiam is best known for his background scores in blockbuster lms like Dhoom 3, Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, 83, Mardaani, amongst several others. In an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the acclaimed background music composer talks about background scores getting their due recognition as creative arts and not just as a technical aspect. He also tells us about his own journey, creating the signature tunes and reveals his upcoming projects.
That’s a very crucial question. If you look at music in most other countries, when they say music of a film, they mean the background music. Whether its Hollywood, Korean film, Japanese, Israeli, Iranian… when they write music it means the background score of the original film. When they have songs in those films, then they mention that this song is by so and so. For some strange reason, in our industry when they write music, it means the songs of

There are quite a few tough ones. There was Dhoom 3 that I did that had Aamir Khan in it. The first two franchises were done by Salim-Suleiman. When I came in on Dhoom 3, the Dhoom tune was already an iconic melody that everybody knew inside out. So, I had to do something different with it and the instructions were to use the essence of the tune, but make it different. We didn’t want to spoil that iconic tune, yet give it a unique touch. Also that tune is played at a crucial juncture in the movie, so that was a very challenging scene. Gladly the director loved it and it was wellreceived.
Probably in the future sometime, maybe the producers will. I’m glad you brought this up because it’s always been happening in the West. Hopefully, it will happen here too. Interestingly, the songs are getting lesser and there’s more focus on background music today. So, I think they will realize that they are just having two songs in one film, so might as well release a few themes along with it and see how the response is.
All genres are equally exciting and the challenges are exciting too. It is important because then it pushes your ability to what you’ve done earlier and push the envelope further. It’s important that we create something different, something that hasn’t been heard before, something unique and with its own signature.

I have always focused on doing roles that have something to say, something to do, or some impact to make,” she explains. The film dealt with the issue of female foeticide. Shalini claims she was moved by the film’s message and thus decided to act in it. “It might not have as many footfalls as expected, but its message did go across. And as long as that happens, I’m happy. I gave it my best, and I’ve heard people loved my performance. Also, I was working with one of the best actors in India, Ranveer Singh. That was a plus as well,” she states. She mentions that she was initially nervous about being cast opposite Ranveer. But her jitters melted away on the first day itself as he made her feel completely at ease. They ended up being pals through the course of the film.

Somehow, I got the role and my journey began. I’d been a film buff since childhood and always imagined myself as the heroine. Finally, my dream came true.”

Yes and it’s important for every person. I work hard, but I make sure that I’m there for my family. The lounge looks a bit crowded and could have done with more space, though the neighbouring tables are not overimposing. The outer area makes for perfect dine-out with friends, while the lounge is a cosier spot for families.

For starters, we opted for the Vegetarian Kebab Platter that had an assortment of vegetable and cottage cheese kebabs and we also tried the Tandoori Aloo (vegan version). Next up was Bhatti da Smoked Lamb Chops, which is barbecued lamb chops served smokey in a jar and it tastes just as delightful as it looks. We also had the Murg Malai Kebab and came away impressed. For the sea-food lovers we’d recommend the Sunehra Jhinga. Moving on to the main course, we had the Lamb Rogan Josh, Butter Chicken and Shrimp Chettinad! For the veg, there was Achari Baingan that we really liked and Aamchuri Bhindi, that went really well with the assortment of naans and breads. All dishes were cooked to perfection and their authentic flavours had us wowed! The spices were just perfect and the ingredients right from the vegetables to the meats were absolutely fresh. Chef Arif Mohammed tells us that only the choicest and freshest ingredients are used. The preparation time isn’t too long, so expect dishes to come soon once Besidesordered.the rich flavours, the presentation of each dish wins it brownie points too. Each dish is a good serving for two. But what truly had us asking for more serving were the accompanying sauces and chutneys. We’d give a thumbs up to all the dishes on all counts here. For the mocktails, we’d suggest you to try their suggestions that go best with the dishes. You won’t be disappointed!
