t is four years that Filmfare Middle East relaunched in the region. It stands tall today because it is backed by the Founder and Chairman of the Danube Group, Mr Rizwan Sajan who has a serious passion for the Bollywood film industry, its talent and its films. In 2017, the magazine that was owned by another company, of who I was Group Editor, had shut its franchise and had returned to its parent company with The Times of India network.

A year of sheer hard work and manifestations from my friends and loved ones brought the brand back to light and life when Deepika Padukone came to launch the first cover of the magazine in March 2018. In 2019, Sonam Kapoor, walked the red carpet at Oman and Ishaan Khatter, Jahnvi Kapoor, Nora Fatehi, Jacqueline Fernandez and Raj Kummar Rao performed to an ecstatic audience. The same year we had Kartik Aaryan launch his cover followed by several other events in the following years. In 2022, Kajol Devgn walked the Filmfare ME Achievers Night red carpet and received a felicitation. Egyptian superstar Mohamad Ramadan who performed at the night became the first Arab celebrity to grace the Filmfare Middle East cover last year. He was flanked by Indian actor Urvashi Rautela. As I sit reminiscing the years, it feels like a train journey of several milestones we conquered and sailed through. Firstly, to establish a brand again with a renewed sense of trust in the market, ensuring that there was no dilution to its stature and credibility and then making it relevant in the Middle East. My dear friend Jitesh Pillaai guided me in the path of making the brand seamless to the Middle East and India. This edition that devotes itself to food talks of some of the finest eateries in the emirate. Gaurav Tandon who was one of the celebrity judges to the F and B Night spoke to us, so did the owners of High Note Bar and Pool Lounge and Epitome Dubai. Watch the reviews of both these restaurants that will drop onto the Filmfare Middle East YouTube soon! Also, with the Dubai Expo’s fanfare ending in March 2022, the edition has several interviews conducted during the event. Grammy awardee for Slumdog Millionaire, PA Deepak spoke to me about working closely with AR Rahman. So, did music composer and singer, George Peter, who is working on the AR Rahman concert, that is due to hit KSA in October. As I was hosting the FICCI session at the Indian Pavilion of Dubai Expo 2020, on sharing stories between India and the UAE, on the panel were some truly esteemed guests that included Hans Fraikin, the Chancellor of the Abu Dhabi Film Commission, Abhishek Vyas, Founder, AVS Production Dubai, Vani Tripathi, Member of CBF and Producer, Mayank Agarwal, DG Doordarshan, Alankar Pandian, Film Distributor, Reem al Houni, CEO, Ti22 Films and Dubai on Demand and film maker Nayla al Khaja. Keen on collaborations, the future will see content being created across the UAE and India in a bigger way. Bollywood has always been that bridge, now we will certainly see more migration of talent across the countries. With the AR Rahman mentored Firdaus orchestra that is an all women orchestra with musicians from all over the world or the Shekhar Kapoor-Rehman collaboration of Why? The Musical that brought in several nationalities on one stage, here is more to 2022 as covid restrictions ease and the city is enveloped in the pious season of Ramadan.

FAN TATTOOS RANVEER SINGH’S FACE ON HIS BACK

Ranveer Singh’s stardom keeps increasing manifold with each passing day. Recently the paparazzi requested him to come out of his car and pose when he was reaching Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s office. “Kya Covid khatam ho gaya kya (Has Covid-19 come to an end?),” commented Ranveer. However, he obliged the paparazzi and he must be glad he did because he chanced upon a die-hard fan just then. This fan informed Ranveer that he had his face tattooed on his back and proceeded to take off his shirt and show the artwork to the star. Ranveer was pleasantly surprised at that and exclaimed, “Kya baat.” He expressed his gratitude and clicked pictures with the star.

HIS PARENTS CALLED HIM JAI HEMANT SHROFF AT THE TIME OF HIS BIRTH, BUT HE GOES BY HIS NICKNAME, TIGER.. THE STAR REVEALED THAT THE NAME CAME FROM PEOPLE COMPARING HIM TO A TIGER DUE TO HIS TENDENCY OF BITING. “I USED TO BITE AS A KID... I LIKED TO BITE EVERYONE AROUND,” HE SAID. THE ACTOR REVEALED THAT ONE OF HIS VICTIMS WAS A TEACHER FROM HIS SCHOOL. “I BIT MY TEACHER IN SCHOOL, AND EVEN GOT PUNISHED FOR THAT,” HE RECOUNTED.

HIS LAST BOW

Seeing our favourite yesteryear Bollywood Divas on various reality shows these days has become a common occurrence. Urmila Matondkar who made a special appearance on the hit music reality show – Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, shared a nostalgic memory of how she had to wear a five kg lehenga and jewellery weighing 15 kg for her hit song Chamma chamma from China Gate (1998). “When we did a look test and photo session for this song, Rajkumar Santoshi Sir asked me, ‘aren’t you wearing too much jewellery?’. I told him that the accessories are important for the Banjaran look in the song. The lehenga itself was around 5kg because of all the authentic work while the jewellery weighed around 15kg.” She joked lightheartedly saying, “When I started filming, the first step was that I had to give a side look, and as soon as I did, my own earring slapped me. Us tamache ki goonj mujhe aaj tak yaad hai (I still remember the echo of that slap).” Ouch!

Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor recently attended a special screening of Rishi Kapoor’s last film, Sharmaji Namkeen. The actor passed away before the completion of the film and Paresh Rawal graciously stepped in and finished the film. What a nice gesture. The screening was also attended by Neetu Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Riddhima Kapoor, Sahni, Shweta Bachchan, Aadar Jain, other family members and friends of the Kapoor family. Alia was at Ranbir’s side throughout and the two later reportedly went on a dinner date.

expert advice SHAH RUKH KHAN’S LIFE CHANGED AFTER THE BIRTH OF ARYAN KHAN It’s known to anyone that Shah Rukh Khan treats his children as friends instead of having authoritative control over them. In an interview after the birth of Aryan, with an American TV channel, Aryan Shah Rukh was asked how it feels to be a father. The actor replied, “Everybody asks me this. It feels just the same.” On being further asked by the interviewer if it means life is not different, Shah Rukh said, “I just have a newer friend, that’s all.” The interviewer also asked the actor how he balances his work life with his personal life and if he wishes that he could spend more time with his family. To this, the Baadhshah of Bollywood said, “I have loads of time with him. There is no problem on that count. I was just with them before I came here and maybe on Monday, I will go and be with them again in New York. They are with me but it’s a little hectic travelling around.” Shah Rukh and Gauri also have a daughter Suhana Khan, born in 2000 and AbRam Khan, born in 2013 through surrogacy.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN IN SUMMER? FACE WASH TO REMOVE EXCESS OIL In summer, oily skin can get oilier. Use a face wash that can deep cleanse and remove all the dirt and grime. People with dry skin would need a nonfoaming cleanser. OPT FOR A GOOD SKIN CARE ROUTINE Choose gel-based (for dry skin) and water based (for oily skin) rather than cream-based products as the former are lighter and non-greasy. INCLUDE ANTIOXIDANTS IN YOUR SKIN CARE REGIME Antioxidant serums protect your skin from environmental damage, help to boost collagen, and scavenge free radicals to prevent damage to skin. KEEP YOUR SKIN HYDRATED You can use a hydrating face mask after you wash your face at night for some extra hydration while you sleep. Splash your face frequently with water or carry a facial mist to freshen your skin at regular intervals. EXFOLIATE FOR HEALTHY SKIN Use a face scrub at least twice a week to remove excess dirt and oil from the skin. Make sure you exfoliate the lips and the neck too.

WEAR SUNSCREEN The sun’s UV-A and UV-B rays can give you a stubborn tan, they can cause premature aging, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. A good sunscreen with SPF 30-50 is vital for the summer months for all skin types too.

AVOID HEAVY MAKEUP Heavy makeup prevents the skin from breathing. Consider using a tinted lip balm and a tinted moisturiser if you need to wear some makeup.

USE A GOOD TONER

Priyanka Chopra opens up about wearing mangalsutra Priyanka Chopra recently shared a post on social media where she shared what feelings she went through when she wore mangalsutra for the first time after she married Nick Jonas. “I remember when I wore mine for the first time… because we have grown up with the idea of what it means. It was just a very special moment for me. At the same time, as a modern woman, I also understand the repercussions of what it means. Do I like the idea of wearing mangalsutra or is it too patriarchal? But at the same time, I am that generation that’s sort of in the middle. Maintain tradition but know who you are and what you stand for. And we’ll see the next generation of girls might do differently.” Well said, indeed.

The maximum number of sebaceous glands are found on the T-zone of the face. To prevent sweat and oil from clogging these pores, use an aloe vera or cucumber-based toner as they are lighter.

MOISTURIZE WELL Choose a non-greasy formula based on your skin type. But look for ingredients like antioxidants like vitamins A and C. If it has SPF, even better.

ACTIONPANTI

Tiger Shroff style! He is to the Bollywood manor born, but Tiger Shroff has clearly earned his stripes. The young heartthrob is relentless when it comes to discipline, his fitness, his films! Constantly trying to better himself, the actor admits that he does get very tough on himself! Now with Sajid Nadiadwala’s Heropanti 2 the action star has yet another blockbuster in the making and as Tiger tells Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, this one is special for more reasons than one. Read on to know why…

You are one of the youngest action stars and the only one in your league with multiple movie franchises, what is it about performing the daredevil sequences and stunts that excites you? Nothing excites me about the daredevil sequences and stunts. It’s always a scary feeling before every stunt. I always hold on to my life before every stunt, and I always pray to God that nothing happens, everything goes smoothly. But when the director says, ‘roll camera’ then all of my fears vanish and then I just manage to see through and I just think about the good time my fans will have when they see these larger than life spectacles. You continue to raise the bar each time with your action and dance both… what comes easier? I think they both are a form of movement, both of them don’t come easy to me at all. I guess the only thing different is the fact that dancing doesn’t hurt as much as action and it’s not as scary as doing action. Besides action, what’s the one genre that excites you the most and you are really keen on exploring more? Besides action, the one genre that really excites me… I don’t know, I’m so obsessed with doing action and there are so many forms in action you know… whether it’s a romantic action film, whether it’s action comedy. I would like

I always hold on to my life before every stunt, and I always pray to God that nothing happens, everything goes smoothly. But when the director says, ‘roll camera’ then all of my fears vanish… to do everything around this honestly, as the base and then just add different things in terms of whatever other genres there are, and combine them. How is Tiger of Heropanti 2 different from the Tiger of Heropanti? What can we expect? Tiger of Heropanti 2 is very different from part 1… The characters are completely different, he’s obviously a lot more mature now, in terms of physicality, I have tried to better myself from Heropanti 1 in all my physical attributes and talents, and also as a performer I have learnt a lot through the years. I was very raw, very new and scared in Heropanti 1, so I think there’s

just a sense of awareness now. Other than that, the two are totally different films, only the character’s name is the same. I think the audiences will be in for quite a surprise, you know I have tried something very different in Heropanti 2 in terms of action, comedy and I am also playing a couple of different shades in this film. So I hope that comes across nicely and hope the audiences like what they see. It’s an industry known for parties and socialising, how do you stay out of it, yet stay relevant in it? I don’t know, just growing up I have April 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 11

You know watching dad perform has always been a little bit moderating to me. So effortless and easy. Whereas I am a kind of an actor who really puts in a lot of effort, so it doesn’t come naturally to me unlike how it comes to him. So, very blessed just living in the same house as him. Tell us about working with Sajid Nadiadwala yet again… Sajid Sir has been my second father and I’m very lucky and grateful to have the number one producer in my corner! I am learning something from him each day and when I work with him I feel like I’m at home and nothing can go wrong. He is a huge inspiration to me. Sajid is known to be quite an indulgent producer, but what about him do you like and respect the most? There’s not a single thing I don’t respect Sajid Sir for. So this answer can be endless. What’s your take on competition as new faces are coming in, and seniors are still here? Blessed to be around so much talent. It inspires me to work harder every day. When not shooting or working out, what would we catch Tiger doing? When not shooting I loveeee to eaaaat all day!

I’m very blessed and grateful to Sajid Sir (filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala) for giving me this platform. I’m very blessed that I have my biggest hits so far with him and I hope we continue our record together, scoring a hattrick very soon. always been shy and an introvert. So any social gathering is very out of place for me, party toh dur ki baat hai. You were signed for Heropanti in 2012 though it released in 2014, so that actually marks a decade for you in the industry, does that make it all the more special? Yes, that makes it all the more special because it’s sort of a milestone for me I guess. And it’s life coming to a full circle from Heropanti to Heropanti 2. I’m very blessed and grateful to Sajid Sir (filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala) for giving me this platform. I’m very blessed that I have my biggest hits so far with him and I hope we continue our record together, scoring a hattrick very soon. How has your process of choosing a film changed since your debut? Honestly, I am not a very picky actor, this script sort of chose me rather than me choosing scripts. I get films which are luckily quite tailor made for me. I’m very grateful to my producers and directors who see me in a certain role or a certain genre and they feel I can do justice to it. Your dad (Jackie Shroff) is an institution in himself. What’s the biggest lesson you have learnt from him?

If people tell you they want to be like you, what would you say is the best thing about being Tiger Shroff and the most difficult? I’d say don’t be like me (laughs). I’m a loner and am too hard on myself. Please enjoy life! Biggest lesson learnt? Listen more, speak less. What are your upcoming films? There’s Heropanti 2, Ganapath, and Rambo.

er 35! SandupCounting Super-hit could well be Bollywood’s hotshot producer Sajid Nadiadwala’s middle name! Carrying forward the 70-year-old legacy of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment is the ace filmmaker, who himself completes 35 years in the industry. From dishing out commercial blockbusters like Baaghi 3, Bachchan Pandey for the masses to tapping the classes with films like Highway, Super 30 and 83, amongst others, the leading producer has his finger on the pulse of his audience. And in a candid chat with Aakanksha NavalShetye, the producer talks about ruling the roost as he consistently hits jackpot at the Box Office How has it been shooting for Heropanti 2 in the UAE? Very exciting because this is my favourite place. I first shot here in 2003 with Salman (Khan) and Akshay (Kumar) for Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, then we shot here for Dishoom with John (Abraham) and Varun (Dhawan) and now it’s Heropanti 2 at Al Ain. I had earlier come here as a kid, but officially I’m shooting here for the first time, so its special. On one hand you are shooting with the senior stars like Salman and Akshay, and then on the other hand you have the new stars Tiger Shroff and Kartik Aaryan. So how do you choose and balance that out and how has it been working with the entire spectrum? Very interesting. So, we go by what the story requires, and we do the casting according to the script requirement. These younger guys are so demanding they keep you on your toes. Whether it is Tiger or Varun or Kartik or Ranbir (Kapoor)… Ranveer (Singh). So as a producer it takes experience to understand them and their requirements. I started my career

It was due to the lockdown that I got a chance to be with Tiger in London for several days and I realized what a boy he is, what a personality he has grown up to be, such a superstar! He is still undervalued, he just has so much potential, he’s very hard working, and very focused.” from Mr Bachchan (Amitabh Bachchan) and Dharmendra ji, so that was one generation and they had their requirements. And then there was the next lot and now this lot! So a producers’ job is like a shock-absorber. Toh, from Mr Bachchan to Tiger, socho kya hoga mera temperament inn last 35 years mein (laughs). Your family has completed 70 years in the industry and you have completed 35 years, what would you say have been the biggest changes in the industry from then to now? Earlier films used to be made in five years and if it was made in three years, it meant that it was a fast production. Today if it takes longer than five months, then

people lose interest in the film. How has it been working with Tiger considering you launched him in Heropanti? So I narrated the film and signed him in 2012-13, then the director took over, I saw the film in the editing room and then I met him at the trial. Then I narrated him Baaghi 2 and 3 and now this film happened during the pandemic. It was due to the lockdown that I got a chance to be with Tiger in London for several days and I realized what a boy he is, what a personality he has grown up to be, such a superstar! He is still undervalued, he just April 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 13

has so much potential, he’s very hard working, and very focused. There is this thing that the youth today have, that if they get an opportunity, they take it and don’t let it go. They will work on it day and night and not let it go. It was not the case earlier. You have been producing such varied content, churning out scripts and productions, isn’t there a temptation of wanting to direct them as well? I became a director by default! During Kick there was something that happened so Salman told me, ‘you direct it’ and I ended up directing it. And the film crossed Rs 200 crore at that time, so I did that get that hit as a debut director, which was great. But you know, I like to write scripts and I’m more of an indoor person. So I write the scripts and hand it to my directors, and they execute it so beautifully. If I start directing, then I will be making only one film at a time, so it becomes very difficult. I am happy in my space. There may be stories where I feel that I want to direct, maybe in the future but not in the next two to

three years for sure. Maybe then I would like to direct a film, but you can’t write, produce and direct a film at the same time. I remember in 2014, I was directing and my four films released as a producer and all four were different genres! There was Highway, then 2 States and Kick and I launched Tiger in Heropanti in the same year, so four films in four months. So it was too tedious for me (laughs)! But Allah has been very kind and merciful. How are the Fridays for you, is it all money-driven? Yeh line aissi hai that if you make films for money, you will never make it, you have to make films for your passion and then watch money flow in. Jumma is anyway special for us, even as a kid, and now the profession is such that again the day is special, blessed one! But yes, Fridays can be a difficult thing too. Like everyone likes it, but there’s something that goes amiss and you can’t explain what. Like ‘83. Everybody who saw the film gave it such an amazing rating, but then there

are sections that didn’t watch it, so yes Jumme ki ahmiyat toh hai, you cannot take it for granted. How much of a risk-taker are you, like you had four films all in different genres? I’ve done my Chartered Accountancy and I’ve done law too, so legally and financially I am very sound and aware that way, but creatively I try taking different directions like Highway was a different film from Kick or then I go in for a film like Tamasha, so I try taking chances, but not at the risk of my balance sheet. I’m from Gujarat, so Shahrukh’s (Shah Rukh Khan) line from Raees, ‘Baniye ka dimaag and Miyaan bhai ki daring,’ fits perfect. So it works parallel, but yes, Allah has been kind and I’ve been doing good. What has success come to mean over the years? Is it Box Office numbers or is it getting to produce your kind of movies on your terms? It’s a very relative term now because I’ve had a 90 per cent track record of success. But the irony is that by the time you realise that you are successful you

14 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST April 2022

are already on to your next film. So there’s no finishing line, you think the race has ended but another race has already started from there. And every Friday is a new Friday. The audience only remember you for that Friday. What you had done on the previous Friday… they have nothing to do with that. For them what you are giving that day is what matters, not what you gave earlier, as the branding doesn’t matter. You are as good as your last film. How do you manage to stay ahead of the curve and with so much content, have that finger on the pulse of the audience? If you see the top films in India, there’s Dangal, Baahubali, Sultan, 3 Idiots, Kick, Dhoom… so if you see all these films, they are all very Indian at the core of it. Only the way of telling the story is different, but the content is the same. So the audience like it, they are used to the Indian culture on screen and they want to connect with these stories. So that at the heart remains the same. It’s all about understanding this. What about OTT? No, I’m not an OTT storyteller. I’m a ‘Beginning’, ‘Interval’ and ‘The End’ person who likes to whistle, likes to clap on hero’s entry. Where are these reactions on OTT! Your son Subhan is already being spoken about in the industry as a kid to watch out for… Is he ready to enter Bollywood? Well, he is working it out. He should get his due in two to three years, there’s time for that. Tell us about your upcoming films Holi was Bachchan Pandey, Eid will be Heropanti 2, then I have another film with Salman for next Eid. The working title is Bhaijaan. And then there is a film with Nitesh Tiwari starring Varun and Janhvi (Kapoor), with the same team of Chhichhore. Then there’s a film with Kartik, so yes, a versatile slate of movies coming up.

The irony is that by the time you realise that you are successful you are already on to your next film. So there’s no finishing line, you think the race has ended but another race has already started from there. And every Friday is a new Friday April 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 15

A NEW HOPE

Saisha Shinde celebrates a year of freedom and fashion. Analita Seth listens in as the designer shares her journey How have your sensibilities about fashion changed in the last one year? I used to favour heels all the time and now after wearing heels, I’ve understood that I can look hot and sexy and cool without heels as well. Secondly, small details like the armhole should be of a certain width, the back should be of a certain depth, especially if it’s day wear. If I’m wearing lingerie then I need to take care of this. The process is much more personal now. Each and every detail is something that I’ve experienced in my new life. Prior to my coming out, I used to just create without understanding on what occasion was my client wearing the outfit. Why she should be wearing this? But there is a much more sensitised understanding of what women are going through. It helps me understand the nuances better. Like what fabric or texture will work for a particular outfit. This attention to minute details

is something I’m giving a lot more importance to right now. Where do you see yourself in the future It’s literally a Pandora’s Box that’s opened in my life currently because there is so much that I have been wanting to do. We are working on a line of jewellery, we are working on a line of bags, we are working on a line of shoes, apart from the collection. Beyond and above that, I am hoping to start a makeup line soon as well. What’s your take on ‘fat tax’ that charges plus size women more for the same outfit? I’ve never charged a client anything extra than what the actual cost of the outfit has been. Probably the fabric consumption varies from person to person, but does that mean that if the client’s size is much smaller than the model’s size, are you going to reduce the cost as well? If you don’t plan to reduce the cost when the fabric consumption is less, why do you plan to increase the cost when the fabric consumption is more. As Saisha, I realised the

importance of making designs and creating designs that can work on all body types and all identities. I am limiting my biases to a specific size, which has taken a complete 180 degree turn since my coming out. Is fashion a necessity or is it a luxury? I personally feel fashion is for everyone depending on your pocket. We don’t need to shop for a designer brand every second week. Adding value to each and every piece you design is far more superior than just randomly making designs every second day. If anyone wants to purchase a designer outfit, there should be value to it. But if you’re going to make two lakh pieces of the same style, its value is lost because it’s no longer something that you’d aspire to own. It’s as expendable as a pair of jeans that you can buy at a random store. Do you have a favourite look that a celebrity sported? Harnaaz Kaur’s gown for Miss Universe is now going to be super special for me. But

Deepika Padukone

my new line of Saisha is not out yet. So, I have yet to see it on women but I’m dying to see it on Deepika Padukone because I love her. I’ve worked with her and she’s absolutely amazing. Do you have a specific stylist who you think styles your clothes the best? I can’t stress more on how Shaleena Nathani has been instrumental in my professional life. She came out of nowhere and gave my clothes to Deepika. And that was like a second life to me. So, for me Shaleena is God, as far as styling is concerned. Eka Lakhani is God, I mean I have done a lot of period costumes with Eka for movies and her understanding of costumes for movies is unparalleled. What are the things that you are doing for the environment and sustainability? Fabric wastage is one big concern and the other one is of course labour wages. What we have consciously decided to do is make a certain number of styles and they are going to be produced in a specific amount only. And once those styles are sold out, they won’t be produced again. There is less wastage and

you get to wear a piece which is absolutely going to be limited. Because these pieces are special, they are gonna be priced, which means that my workers will be given a goodwage as well. Is social media a boon or a bane? There’s no way to control the trolling. We wanted the world to grow smaller, we wanted everyone to access our lives, we wanted everyone to see where we are having breakfast, with whom we are having dinner and which restaurant we are sitting with and what we are wearing. You want to put your life out there? Well, guess what, everyone has an opinion on everything. Welcome to the jungle.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Making a

difference! The founder-owner of the successful chain of Blush N Curls Ladies Salon & Spa, Lavanya Vikram is also a well-known influencer. In a candid chat with Aakanksha NavalShetye, the entrepreneur talks about the importance of safe-to-use organic products in the beauty industry and also about her initiatives to support women How did you start this successful chain of salons and how has the journey been? When I first decided to open Blush N Curls, the aim was to break the stereotype of a ‘parlour’ and move towards a safer community, hence the birth of Blush N Curls being 100 per cent toxic chemical free. As for the journey, it wasn’t easy going chemical free! The products weren’t cheap, the concept was unique, so we were competing not only on the pricing, but also educating on hygiene. It was a roller coaster ride but when I look back, I realise that I learnt a lot and I’m proud that we made a name in the industry. Tell us more about the concept of Blush N Curls Ladies Salon & Spa Inhaling chemicals generally used in salons every day is a safety hazard as it can cause severe health conditions. Sadly, this is ignored in the beauty industry. But like I said, Blush N Curls is aimed towards a safer community and hence the goal is that anyone who is associated with us – whether working in the team or a client availing our services - wouldn’t face any kind of health hazard due to the chemicals, not just in the short run, but over a long period too. We offer almost every kind of service from head to toe, and every single product used is either organic, vegan or natural, and absolutely free of toxic chemicals that can cause health hazards like cancer, stroke, hypertension, miscarriage, blood thinning, etc. Would you say this is also your USP? Absolutely! We are the first salon in UAE that has gone 100 per cent toxic chemical free making it safer for pregnant ladies, breastfeeding women

and kids too. We are also ‘A Gold’ Certified Salon from DM. What’s the vision ahead? A lot of our clients include cancer survivors as their doctors approve of our products. So going forward, we want to spread the wings to the entire UAE and make it a safer community in beauty Industry, creating as much awareness as possible about the use of toxic vs non-toxic chemicals. What have been the changes you’ve seen over the years and what do you predict ahead? Well the beauty industry has been constantly changing more so now with so many new trends in social media. Back in 2016 when I spoke at a Summit or an event, there wasn’t much interest in organic or vegan products. But now in 2022, there is a massive change where people are more aware, which is nice to know and I’m happy I could in some way educate more through my YouTube, Instagram or through TV or radio. In the coming years, I think brands would be forced to look at their formulation and move towards using safer ingredients. You are also a leading influencer and are known to lend

support to a lot of aspiring entrepreneurs. I remember when I started initially I faced a lot of rejection and there was no support. So when my clients talk to me about their skills, but share how they are afraid to start something on their own, I encourage them. Today I see so many of them running their own establishment successfully and it makes me happy. It’s my little way of giving back to the society. As influencers, we carry a major responsibility, so if I can help promote a business or inspire someone, then why not, and I am happy to support more brands. Tell us more about your social initiatives… I started working at the age of 13 when I lost both my parents and had a sibling to take care of. I’ve always learnt to give back a small part of what I get and that has helped me in many ways by God’s grace. So, in 2018 we started a small campaign where we started giving free services to domestic help across UAE and we will continue this across our branches. We also cater to cancer survivors and host pampering sessions for kids with special needs. Besides this, like I said, I continue to educate consumers about the chemical vs non chemical products, support businesses, and encourage and inspire women in whatever way I can. What’s that one message you’d give to women? Just be yourself and accept all your rejections as a stepping ladder to step higher. Also be consistent, never give up. …And Tahir Raj Bhasin is undoubtedly the frontrunner! Easily one of the most exciting names on the entertainment scene today, the young actor has come a long way within a short span of time. Kickstarting his Bollywood dream with an unconventional role as the negative lead in Mardaani, this year saw him transform into the quintessential romantic hero and own the space with his acclaimed performances in Ranjish Hi

Sahi, Yeh Kaali Kaali Aanhkein and most recently Looop Lapeta. We caught up with the versatile actor for a quick chat and tried to peel away the layers from his complex onscreen characters to understand what the real Tahir Raj Bhasin is like. And in a candid interview with Aakanksha NavalShetye, the actor reveals that he’s actually quite a romantic at heart and also talks about being fearless when it comes to choosing roles on screen

YOU HAVE PLAYED SO MANY LAYERED COMPLEX CHARACTERS ON SCREEN, WHAT IS THE REAL TAHIR RAJ BHASIN LIKE? Because of the types of roles I have done, especially early on in my career, the perception is that I am very reserved, and a very cold kind of a guy, but I’m actually quite a romantic at heart, with a sense of humour, so I’m very different from what you see on screen. SO WHAT’S YOUR IDEA OF A ROMANCE? My idea of a great date is to travel, also I love a great sense of adventure, and Iike I said, I’m quite a romantic at heart, so I like the old school romance – candle-light dinners, beach, travel and I’m sorted. A great sense of humour is important too, that’s like the icing on the cake. YOU’VE BEEN PITTED WITH VERY STRONG WOMEN CHARACTERS IN MOST OF YOUR SCREEN OUTINGS – WHETHER IT WAS RANI MUKERJI (MARDAANI) TO NOW TAAPSEE PANNU (LOOOP LAPETA), WHAT’S THE DRAW THERE? I had never really joined the dots to bring out that similarity, but now that you mention it… yes it’s true. I think it has more to do with the audience getting more matured and the fact that there is an evolution happening in story telling in India where gender roles are being reversed in a narrative. That’s also what’s exciting about YKKA or a Looop Lapeta, because conventionally, in Indian films, it’s usually the male character who’s obsessively chasing or lusting after the heroine. But here it’s completely reversed and I feel that’s the beauty why people have connected with it. Because its disruptive and it changes gender norms and it’s the same in Looop Lapteta. I love the fact that when Satya’s in trouble, he calls his girlfriend to help him out and it’s not like the typical scenario where the hero is like beating up all the goons single-handedly and solving it all out. Also the fact that Satya wears a nose-pin, again it was considered such a gender-defining female accessory, but here he is wearing one and normalizing it. I think it’s incredible and really a sign of the times today that there are no actors and actresses, they are all actors! And that’s a step in the right direction.

THREE BACK-TO-BACK SUCCESSES… IT SEEMS LIKE A TAHIR RAJ BHASIN FEST ON THE OTT WITH YOU RULING THE ROOST… Yes, it’s been a fantastic dream beginning to 2022. It takes an actor a lot of work and a window of two years for something like this to happen, but I’m so glad that the stars have aligned to let me enjoy this run. I’ve had an amazing time because as an actor it’s given me the opportunity to showcase my acting in different genres. Also it’s the first time that I have done ‘romantic lead parts’ which have been so fabulous to do. What made it even more interesting was that I play the romantic lead in all my three releases this year. THE SEASON 2 OF YEH KAALI KAALI AANKEHIN HAS ALREADY BEEN ANNOUNCED! Usually, it takes months to decide on a new season, but with YKKA, it took them barely 15 days to lock the next season, thanks to the resounding and overwhelming response the series garnered. FOR SOMEONE WHO HAD A RATHER UNCONVENTIONAL START PLAYING THE NEGATIVE LEADS - FIRST IN MARDAANI THEN FORCE 2 – TO NOW PLAYING THE ROMANTIC LEADS, HOW HAS THE TRANSITION BEEN FOR YOU? I’d like to admit that playing the romantic hero is actually my comfort zone, it’s the kind of cinema I have grown up watching, where you are goofy, a charmer, you’re romancing. So I’m very lucky that I got to stretch myself as an actor early on to play the anti-hero in Mardaani and in Force 2, because these were roles that showed parts of me that even I didn’t know I had. And it’s been great doing a variety of roles. So if you think action, there’s Force 2, if you think sports there’s ‘83, if you think college-drama, there’s Chhichhore… and I think doing this variety and doing such disruptive roles is what keeps me engaged as an actor. April 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 31

30-32 -FFME- APRIL 2022-TAHIR .indd 31

27/03/2022 12:29 PM

INTERVIEW EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE PLAYING THE ROMANTIC LEADS, YOUR CHARACTER OF VIKRANT HAS GREY SHADES… You’re right about that. I’m someone who believes that no one is all black or all white, there are different proportions of that good and bad! It’s the circumstances in that person’s life that tilt the balance from being in a light space to going to a dark space and that’s where my character in YKKA is. He’s just an ordinary boy in extraordinary circumstances and if he has to save the lives of his people then he has to go down a path that he has no experience in and that’s what the audience have related to the most. That vulnerability is shown and it’s a man who really doesn’t know how to use a gun or how to hire a contract killer, so he’s like googling these things out. It’s fictional, ‘do not try this at home’ (laughs) but to answer, yes I have truly enjoyed these characters that have layers to them, where they are good but they are being pushed into the grey zone.

What really excites me about where I am today, is that the world is my oyster and I can go anywhere from here because I have spent the past few years creating a brand or the perception as a performer where there’s a variety and variation and you cannot box me in any particular category. That’s very fulfilling to know that I can work in any genre, and give that confidence to a production house. There’s a great sense of freedom in knowing that you created your own path, and been on this journey out of your choosing and will.

TALKING OF FREEDOM, IS IT ALSO LIBERATING THAT WITH YOUR UNPREDICTABLE CHOICES, THERE’S NO BAGGAGE OF PEOPLE EXPECTING A PARTICULAR CHARACTER FROM YOU? I’m very competitive as a person, but my only competition is myself so, if I have done something in 2021, I would want to do something completely different in 2022. Better than what was done and the goal is always disruptive content. That challenges the norm. So yes, it’s liberating. When you are expecting something bad, but he’s the good guy or he looks like a hero but is the bad guy, and that’s interesting. Like Satya is a romantic hero, but he is a fool and is flawed in the way he wants to get the girl of his dreams. And so it is the flawed human-ness in the characters that always attracts me and it’s good to surprise the audience. BIG SCREEN OR OTT, WHAT’S THE PREFERENCE? There’s something very magical about being in that dark theatre connecting with the characters you see on screen, sharing a piece of art in a community experience, but at the same time, with YKKA, what I have experienced is getting messages from the audience from across the globe… like Japan, South America, all on the same day. People across the globe watching Indian content with subtitles is an incredibly proud feeling. So what I love to think about it is as a hybrid stardom and that’s where I believe the future is. You can be a star on the OTT or you can be the film star at the same time. When Mardaani happened a few years ago, at that stage you could either be a film star or you could be a TV star there was nothing in between. Now there’s this great hybrid that people who are working on films can also work on telling episodic chapter-wise stories like YKKA. So I think that hybrid stardom is the way to go, and if OTT star is what the buzzword is then I’m very proud to wear that crown.

YOU HAVE COMPLETELY MADE IT HERE ON YOUR OWN. HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK AT YOUR JOURNEY? Pride is the word I would use. It’s not easy because if it was then everyone would have been there, but it has been challenging and it helps you discover who you are and how much are you willing to pursue your craft. 32 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST April 2022

Hybrid stardom is the way to go, and if OTT star is what

YOU HAVE BEEN QUITE FEARLESS WHEN IT COMES TO TAKING RISKS? I think the job of an artiste is to take risks, it is to go to lengths and push their art in a direction where people do not see it going. I’ve made a career out of taking disruptive parts and I’m very proud of that, because I think that’s where the audience is entertained today. They have such a large palette to choose from whether its international OTT content or domestic or films that if you’re not pushing the envelope and going out of the comfort zone then you’re not growing. So that’s what I am doing, chasing those roles.

the buzzword is then I’m very proud to wear that crown

The Sound of

Music

Photography :Ghulam Murtuza

He has taken his first PCR test to travel overseas and is pretty excited about it. The soft-spoken Grammy awardee ( for Slumdog Millionaire) PA Deepak who is part of AR Rahman’s technical team as audio engineer, is self-effacing too. But watch between his words and you meet a brilliant mind with a sense of humour that lives and breathes music. Deepak is currently working on an album with a Dubai based producer and his 3rd album has got nominated for the 64th Grammy Awards 2022. Manju Ramanan chats up with him on his musical journey. When did you start learning music? I started learning the guitar when I was 6-7 years old. I grew up in Vishakapatnam (Vizag) and was soon part of orchestras and bands. When I met with a small accident, I couldn’t play the guitar since the waiting period during the healing was long. So, I checked on other things I could do and there was this music studio without any sound engineer at that time. I started exploring everything I could do around music and soon I was the only audio engineer in Vizag at one point in time. I also interned in local Doordarshan serial in 1998, till Nagesh Kukunoor came by and Rockford happened. I also did another film with him called Bollywood Calling, that has Navin Nischal in it. Then some Telugu films happened too but I wasn’t satisfied. I felt like a frog in the well. How did you move out of your comfort zone? I have friend who is a flutist with Navin Kumar who has played with AR Rahman. I asked him of the possibility in getting into his gang. Through him I met Ranjit Barot and then Saleem Sulaiman too. Also, a flight ticket to Mumbai from Vizag, back in 2004, used to cost Rs 26,000 back then and I couldn’t always fly back and forth and

both of them told me that they will let me know in some time. Within one month, I got a call from both people saying there is a film we have and you need to come to Mumbai to complete it. Both the engineers working with them had left. So, I told Salim Merchant that I had already promised Ranjit sir that I would work with him. I joined him and work was hectic and I would even sleep in a space in the mezzanine floor at the studio. That was the time Farah Khan used to come pretty often to the studio during the making of Mai Hoon Na. There is a massive choir section in the film and that is when I saw the stalwarts such as Clinton, Vijay Prakash etc who were part of the singing chorus. I was like a kid in a candy shop. It was like wow! When Ranjit sir used to go for concerts, I would work with Salim Sulaiman – I worked on films such as Mujhse Shaadi Karoge etc. You are a musician turned technician. How does that work to your advantage? The advantage I have is that I have been a musician and then a technician. So, when I am giving

34 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST April 2022

29/03/2022 6:56 PM

instructions, I can point out a certain note to the musician during dubbing. For instance, telling the musician that there is an issue in the fourth line is easier for him to understand. Also technically speaking, my calculations are much quicker than my explanations. If you send me a questionnaire and ask me to answer things, I get a brain freeze (laughs) or you tell me I want a little course for my school, please send it to me, I will freeze again! Each brain works in its own way. I am closer to numbers than letters. When did you meet AR Rahman? I was working on Subash Ghai’s Kisna with Ismail Durbar sir and ARR sir and one day he came for the dubbing and sat next to me. That was a fan moment for me. Sir is very jovial and has a great sense of humour. Often when he sees me sleepy after work in the studio, he will bundle us all up in his car and take us for a long drive and he drives very fast! Tell us about winning the Grammy? So, work on. Slumdog Millionaire happened in between Yuvraj and Ghajini. ARR and Bharat Bala used to do a lot of international projects and I thought this was one of them. Then sir told me that this is a Danny Boyle film! I had just watched Sunshine and liked his work. ARR asked me to create a nice track and we started. We had little time and we worked really hard on the project and sir would come and see the changes. But each movie is the same for us – the Oscar or the Grammy comes later. Once I asked him how do you want the music to be and he said, “Inspire me.” That was my challenge. How does music move you? It is about the joy you derive in it. For instance, while creating Rehna Tu – Rakeshy Mehra was waiting for

what a big music section after the antara. Rahman sir said he wanted a little time with it and I got busy mixing Rehna Tu and Kaala Bandar. He then called me and said, come ! I didnt hear any music section in the middle but in the end. A flute solo and it was so surprising, so new and so inspiring You learn that from ARR sir to be creative and new but also risk the possiibility of the piece being rejected or used for another song. Do you listen to a lot of other music? I have been a voting member for the Grammy much before I won it. I listen to many artistes and I am working with several others too. I try to imbibe from them so that I sound better. How did the pandemic affect you? We did a lot of work during the pandemic, about 6-7 albums. Live streams were happening all the time and we were doing everything on software. We finished our dubbings with artistes and Javed Ali and Jonita Gandhi sang from the comforts of their homes and studios. I finished Ricky Cage’s album that has been nominated to the Oscars. How has life changed after the Grammy award? While it is great for your CV, people think that either you have an attitude or that you are very expensive. That is the only change. How is ARR as a mentor? Sometimes he will challenge you saying, hey Grammy award winner, finish the song. I will reply back saying “Yes, double time Oscar winner”. He jokes around constantly. I don’t usually eat sweets and he will generally say, he will need more Grammy awards before he eats sweets.

Trouble shooting is an intrinsic part of the job. Two hours before a concert, the back up system crashed. It is our Plan B in case the main system has problems. I had to instal all software and just 15 minutes before the concert, readied the 2nd system. You grow when you take risks. Each step is challenging but so worth it. INTERVIEW

Life is a

Song He’s been part of one of India’s first rock band 13 AD as a lead singer, is associated with AR Rahman’s oncoming concert in KSA and is recording his English album with a Dubai based producer. Manju Ramanan catches up with music composer and singer George Peter who is based in Cochin and visits Dubai regularly. Were you always about music? Yes, my dad is a violinist and has been quite a serious musician who has played with the legendary Yesudas. Both my maternal and paternal grand dads have been seeped into music. My dad’s dad played the violin and mom’s dad played the piano and composed songs. So, my dad encouraged me towards music. In fact, my grandfather gave me my first guitar when I was three years old. He made it for me. As for my first public performance, I was in Class 3 I learnt the piano and passed with honours. I then, lost formal training in music that I would stumble upon later! Majorly! How did that happen? An uncle of mine gave me a cassette of Phil Collins and

Michael Jackson when I was in 8th standard. It was a new chapter in performances, sound and composition and I was drawn back to music. I joined the school band when I was in the 9th standard and dad then got me a guitar. Our band won a lot of competitions and when I started college at St Paul’s, the music continued there too. I later joined St Alberts college and our band VALHALLA won first place at the National Youth Festival. After that, we went to Hotel Sea Lord to chill and watch the iconic band 13 AD play. Suddenly I was called onstage to sing and I sang ‘Hey You’! I was all of 19-20 and soon, Pauly, the bassist of 13 AD arrived home and asked me if I would join a good band and asked me to come to the hotel that evening to sing again. I sang ‘When a Man Loves a woman,’ by Michael Bolton and a week later I joined 13 AD. So, Zoology studies took a backseat and I travelled with the band across India to packed concerts. We went to Delhi, to Pilani, Saturday club shows in Kolkata, Mardi Gras,

I am fond of Sting since his lyrics are deep and musical.

shows in Bangalore, Mangalore. In a month we used to have 3-4 concerts and that became my mainstream work. In 1994, we went to Muscat and in 1996, we disbanded. How did you meet AR Rahman? I came back and joined the film industry. My dad’s close friend Rex Issacs, a legendary violinist, who plays the viola for ARR and Illayaraja took my CDs to him and my younger brother’s friend and music composer Deepak Dev took me to his studio. ARR asked me about my previous work and I told him that I had worked with Mohanlal and Usha didi (Usha Uthup). I then recorded a song for his then film Bose, that was a Shyam Benegal movie. After that I went back to Cochin, waiting for my next call and sure enough it came. His then manager Noel James, asked me to come to Chennai and Sivakumar gave me the song to get accustomed to the melody. But when I met ARR, he told me that Adnan Sami had already sung the song and there was another song for me - Mario Mario with Karthik. ARR then asked me if I wrote lyrics and gave me a piece of paper that

had a few words as pointers. That is when I wrote ‘One Vision’ inspired by ‘Ignited Minds, the book by the late President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam. It was filmed on several known singers and iconic actors from all over India. It was a biggie and ARR took me to Delhi to meet the President of India, My friend Mehboob (who also wrote Vande Mataram) wrote the Hindi version). For some reason, the song couldn’t release. I later joined ARR for the UNITY OF LIGHT world tour and 3D world tour , where I was in charge of the choral section. Some of the songs I arranged music for him include ‘Chori Chori, Ghananan Ghanan,’ and a lot of harmonies in Lagaan, Saathiya and the song ‘Ru Baru’ that won the national award. I also did songs for Malayalam

cinema and in Chennai, I was handling the technicals of ARR’s music scoring after being a rock musician. I also composed music for the Malayalam film ‘Heartbeat’ that was well appreciated. Did you miss being a rock musician? I want to come back with this album I am recording in Dubai. Performing in front of a live audience is the biggest high in the world. My friend Alex George, who I have known for the last 7 years is producing the album. There are songs based on social and environmental issues around the world and a song on women empowerment. INTERVIEW

Celebrity make-up artiste and educator, Zeenat Jaffer who owns Z Haus Make up Consultancy and PR that specializes in beauty, cosmetic and personal care, make up, destination weddings, films and fashion events, is a known name in Dubai. Well versed, distinguished and in the correct know-how of the world of makeup, she has been an integral part of several big events in the UAE. I catch up with her at the Marina Mall in Dubai over coffee and what follows is an insightful conversation on how make up is perceived today. Manju Ramanan

Beautiful P People

eople have this concept today that the right make-up is the one that presented on Instagram. The drama of the filters, people working with colours, lashes and the works enamors people. What they don’t realise is that, it is not enough. The influencer who people are going gaga over is good to create a signature look for herself. She might not be able to do it on you because each of us have a different skin type, texture, shape of the face and many other features that we may overlook. Make up is not a joke or a mode to merely look good. There are professional schools where people spend arduously long hours studying aspects such as anatomy of the face, the changing texture of skin, what looks good in front of the camera as per your personality and more! There is so much to learn. I tell my students that it will be disillusioning for them if they think that they can come to me and soon start doing Instagram make up. I would get upset initially when people called me a ‘parlour wali.” You need to be honed in theory and

38 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST April 2022

25/03/2022 11:38 PM

foundation skills and work on several skin types, shapes, textures etc. A person tells you right away what their expectations are from you. You need to understand if the person comes from a culture of make-up. You are here to enhance the person’s beauty and understand his or her need to look good. And that is customized to each person. And then be told sometimes, “Kya make up Kiya. Kuch Kiya hi nahi.” Make up is like the food you order. It has to be delivered at the right time in the right taste. And food is customized as per taste. I have had a client whose husband made her remove her make up each time she got ready and then when we worked on her, she got her whole family to see it. There was a lot of make up on her but it was the no-make up look.

the front stage. We started student internships, kids who interned under seniors. Dubai has picked up that culture well and I am hoping it evolves more. They were limited to working under teams and now they are freelancers. Some celebs know their make-up really well. Kanika Kapoor knows her make-up and she carries her colours and her contours with good knowledge. She has good understanding of what works with her. Neha Kakkar too will give you instructions on her face. Amongst the men, it is Arbaaz Khan.

Simplicity is the highest form of sophistication and that comes with knowledge and working hard. I have had many people who are really good artistes and a lot of people who do theory and intern with us – there is so much education we have imparted over the years. Many people don’t know their colours, their analogs, their complementary colours or a colour that negates their look. A good make-up artiste is a stylist as well. Because it is not enough that you do the make up well. She should know how the hair falls, advise on the hairstyle if the client has a broad face, even direct the colours to wear because the overall look matters in the end. It has to be aesthetically pleasing. Beauty is about involvement. Artistes don’t know that same shades of colour changes on various skin tones. If you are Caucasian, you could be European or Scandinavian. What is brown, looks red on you. Your eye brow and lashes are blonde – you are not the standard type and so the make-up artiste needs to be well-versed and not just care about the end product. Most influencers don’t have the experience of beauty. They can do make up on themselves but they cannot do it on every other skin tone. People don’t care about this aspect and what they see is what they are impressed by since they don’t want to invest much time on what they are getting into. Beauty consultants need to present themselves well – their eloquence is important, is hygiene, brand selection and the projects they associate with. You cannot be rushed. You have to draw a line and first ask to consult the client before starting a project. We are one of the first to bring the backstage to April 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 39

INTERVIEW

Nurturing Notes His wife, Jyothi Mallik is shopping in Marina mall when I catch up with Dabboo Mallik over coffee. His leg is in a cast and he jokes that he walks like a robot. His sons, singer Amaal and composer Armaan Mallik are in town and he has released his single with Sunidhi Chauhan, under their own music label MWM – Music with the Malliks. A man who nurtured the talent of his two sons when his father, the late Sardar Mallik told him that they are unique, who saw them through their careers is a pleasure to speak to. Manju Ramanan catches up with him

So, you’ve started your own label? MWM – Music with Malliks, a name curated by Jyothi was incorporated in 22nd July 2021 Armaan’s birthday and Amaal and I head the company. Our latest project Firaaq with Sunidhi Chauhan was recorded under the label. This will be followed by Amaal’s song and then other projects. The concept is unconventional, where we encourage new talent, shoot their videos and put it out there. Our first one garnered 14-15 lakh views in one week. Also, I had several composed songs that were part of voice notes and didn’t make their way into films. So, Amaal came up with the idea of not let them remain just voice notes but leave my own legacy. He directed my singing – he is very strict, at times using a foot ruler to correct me (laughs). He is a tough music director to work with and sees to it that we do our very best. He will spend days to get the perfect song. Right now, we have 4-5 very good songs. You have known Sunidhi Chauhan for a long time? I have known Sunidhi from the time she was 14 years old and I was 30. Unlike a lot of artistes who tend to get an attitude quickly, this is one girl who is a child when it comes to music. She is like my heartbeat – such a wonderful artiste and a pleasure to work with. When she came to the studio to record the song, she told me that she hasn’t sung ghazals and if I wasn’t satisfied with the result, I could give the song to someone else. It was a different take to the songs she has sung before. But it turned out to be a clutter breaker and she sounded different and so good. The kind of attention she gave to the song, she

40 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST April 2022

behaved as if she was singing the first song of her life. Her first show was in Dubai in which I was there too – it was an Annu Mallik evening at the Al Nasr Leisure land. We were put up in a hotel with largely non-Indian people, largely Europeans. At the club, a few of them were singing and I took her there and announced that she was one of India’s emerging singers. She sang a Whitney Houston number and go the crowds transfixed. It is the same with Armaan. Once at home, long ago, he was about six or seven years old when I heard him play the guitar. He was in the laundry room just playing on an instrument so well. I carried him and the guitar and rushed to a teacher to teach him. Amaal was 13-14 years old when I bought him a Mac book and his understanding of technology is amazing. He is razor sharp. I remember watching Sonu Nigam perform live in Dubai to Mohammed Rafi songs when he was about 20 years old and when he sang, you knew inside that there is nothing stopping this man. Tell us about your closeness to your father, the legendary Sardar Mallik? My legacy in music goes back to over 70-80 years. My dad was from a Muslim family from Kapurthala Punjab and left home at 14 years of age because he was fond of music and dance and his family had reservations. He tells is that he ran behind a running train and followed the railway tracks, to leave home for ever. He would have walked for 50 kms to reach the next station and soon he saw a Maharaja’s procession go by. He broke the royal barricade and told the king that he didn’t want to go home and he wanted to pursue dance and music. As fate would have it, Pandit Uday Shankar, who had a performing arts centre in Almora was part of his entourage. For the next 4-5 years, he was taken to trained in dancing and music. He trained under Ustad Alauddin Khan sahib who recognized his natural talent and taught him. His classmates at that time were names such Guru Dutt, Pandit Ravi Shankar and Mohan Sehgal. They were his guru bhais. On his death bed, he told me that both my children Armaan and Amal are exceptionally gifted and I need to nurture them. He was very frail when he told me that Armaan will become a “Lata Mangeshkar,” and Amaal has a deep understanding of raagas and rhythm and that these kids have understood the essence of music. From that day, I became their coach and Jyothi became their manager. How did you meet your wife? I was doing a musical play called Khelaiya and we had taken the dramatics department in Narsee Moinjee college when a girl entered the common room where we were rehearsing. I looked at her and told my friends that I will marry her one day. They told me that I stand no chance with her since that was the same girl who got 123 roses on rose day. But apparently, the spark had struck and she came looking for me. I wasn’t that regular in college but one day when I went to collect my certificate she came looking for me. As she walked towards me I said hello to her and asked her if she would marry me. I was all of

19 and she was 15. We dated for five years and got married. My family was liberal but her’s wasn’t. They were a strict Telugu family and she had to endure a lot to get married to me. How do you look back at your career? I did a lot of things before I realised that music is what I wanted to do. I did Tv serials like Mahabharata and films such as Baazigar and Tiranga. I am the guy who plays Shilpa Shetty’s boyfriend in Baazigar that Shah Rukh Khan’s character kills. During the shoot SRK would see me complete my shot and keep writing stuff and be hooked to my Walkman and told me that I would do great in music. I was producing a music series for TV called Harmony when I realised that music is what I wanted to do. In 1999 I met Sohail Khan and Salim uncle and we got close. When he asked me what I did, I said I did a lot of things and that is when he sat me down and told me that he knows me to be associated with music and that is what I should focus on. I did songs for them that included Thoda sa Pyaar hua hai and films such as Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam and Maine Dil Tujhko Diya etc. But the music scene changed in between 2005-2006 with songs such as Dus Bahane and Dhoom. The shift moved away from romantic numbers. How do you see the future of music now? We are in a digital era and both my sons have fans who have grown with them. So, if they started following them when they were ten, they have grown up with them. Their fan following across the globe and on Instagram is to be seen to be believed! INTERVIEW

The King, The Kitchen

and His Khazana

A culinary master and chef extraordinaire, Chef Sanjeev Kapoor is easily the most celebrated face of Indian cuisine globally. From running a successful chain of as many as 65 restaurant outlets in over 10 countries to continuing to sharing the delightful recipes on his YouTube channel, the renowned culinary personality continues to inspire food enthusiasts. The Master Chef was recently in Dubai as the Guest of Honour for our very first Filmfare Middle East F&B Night, where he was also honoured as the Food Icon of the Decade. In an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, Chef Sanjeev Kapoor talks about the changing food scenes globally, what excites him about flavours and foods and he also reveals his own favourite foods You have been amongst the frontrunners of the Indian food scene, how has the journey been for you? I’ve always been passionate about gastronomy, but along with that, ever since my childhood, I have been determined on exploring the unfamiliar paths and doing something out of the ordinary. I believe that brought me into this beautiful world of culinary arts. Back in those days, for educated men, cooking wasn’t considered as a real profession, so I faced quite a bit of criticism from my friends and relatives. Fortunately, my parents were okay with my choice of profession. I have never been afraid to try out new things, so after working for a few years in a professional kitchen, I started hosting Khana Khazana, the longest running popular cookery show, and that

turned out to be the stepping stone to my success. Of course the path wasn’t an easy one, but my focus, hard work and my family’s support got me going. Eventually I started receiving all the love from the audience, my efforts were recognised and I won accolades and honours, not just in India but abroad too. That motivated me to work harder. So I must say, I enjoyed every bit of my journey till date. I learnt a lot throughout and I guess there is a lot more to come, picture abhi baaki hai… What keeps you so excited about flavours and foods? I belong to a family where food is at the forefront of our thoughts almost through the day and night. When it comes to crafting a particular dish, each ingredient has a different role to

play. With the right ingredients, dher saara pyaar (lots of love) and utmost innovation, any dish can go from ordinary to extraordinary! Personally, I enjoy experimenting as I can play with ingredients, methodology and presentation to get in the signature touch. Each time, there is so much to learn. Food is like a canvas, where one can unleash creativity with flavours, taste and textures. Hence, my creative side gets in the much-needed tweak required to suit the current trends. Then I share these masterpieces with my beloved audience, and they love it. So this motivates me to keep doing more of what I do.

Globally, there’ve been so many cuisines that are accessible today that weren’t on the menu years ago, so how do you look at being a market leader inspite of the competition? It is absolutely rewarding that more and more cuisines are now being able to set such a strong foot on a global scale. I feel gratified that I could contribute to this. I had stepped into this industry with a dream to bring gastronomy to the limelight, and now as I see the success, it fills up my heart with pride. Now I am glad that the industry is growing and everyone is busy exploring possibilities and being creative in their own space. Being called as a market leader puts more responsibility on my shoulders, but my mantra is to take challenges head-on, with a smile on the face, share knowledge and most importantly keep learning. I am a teacher at heart and love sharing not only my knowledge but also my secrets with the so called competitors. After all, we are all heading to the same destination to make this gastronomic world even more beautiful. How have you over the years, kept yourself relevant with the changing markets yet stayed connected to the roots so firmly? Staying relevant comes naturally when you are passionate about what you do. Of course, it is also important that you learn, re-learn and keep learning throughout life. The concept that worked yesterday, might not work today. Especially in this digital era, nothing except change is constant. Everyday cannot be the same! I realised that early on. Nonetheless I was never afraid to try out new things. You know, I hosted the TV cookery show when no one else ventured to that arena. Gladly, it has brought me up till here and I’ve no regrets or complaints! What I mean to say is, one must be able to access the need of the hour and experiment, it is only then they can create a masterpiece. Besides, keeping up with the trends and creating your own unique trend always comes in handy! I love technology and have always embraced it with open arms and heart. I have been working on Culinary AI and ML through my venture Tinychef. I go with the flow but never without a thorough research. Throughout this journey, my family and audience’s support kept me grounded, it is because of their support that I am here. With the multiple platforms available today, do you think that the chefs have it easier today compared to when you started off? I really cannot compare it per se because every journey is different.

It is true that in today’s digital era, more information is available at the fingertips, chefs can easily reach a wider audience and showcase their talents through such numerous platforms, and also opt for online classes to refine their skills. My generation didn’t have that, but still I believe where there is a will there’s a way. I grew up watching and learning from my parents, so it is really up to the person to judge and choose wisely what is best for them, utilise their time in a direction that’ll be helpful for them in the long run. Besides, there are also some cons that are attached with the multiple platforms like trolling, again which my generation didn’t have to face or at least it was in a different manner as compared to today. So, I think whichever generation you are from, whichever profession you are into, your journeys will be different, and so everyone must put in hard work to succeed. Only good thing for today’s Chefs is that they have my knowledge bank at their disposal, I am sure, that will make their life slightly easier. Tell us more about your chain of restaurants and your vision ahead for them? My passion of cooking and feeding people the best of the dishes from around the globe, brought me into this space of the industry. With a clear ideology of serving classy food at affordable prices, I opened my very first restaurant, Khazana and since then there has been no looking back with Signature, The Yellow Chilli, Hong Kong, Sura Vie, and many more. Currently there are more than 65 outlets in about 10 countries all over the world serving my signature recipes and a lot more. All of which have been receiving an exceptional response. During COVID we had to alter a few things as per the situation and it was not easy to survive but things are getting back on track now. SK restaurants stand out for and deliver the best – be it food, ambience, hospitality, everything. So, menus are constantly worked on by the skilful team of chefs to keep moving with the times. We derive inspiration from all around – ingredients, approaches, situations, fresh takes on old standards and much more. Looking forward, I hope to drive consistent growth and expand the chain even further. I have plans to launch more outlets around the world. So to say, a lot is happening or I’d say ‘cooking’ and a lot is yet to come. What have been the biggest game-changers in the food scene globally?

There is no doubt that I am a big foodie, but for me ‘Maa ke haath ki kadhichawal’ (Curry- Rice made by my mother) was, is and will always be my favourite food. The love and affection with which she cooks makes it a whole lot special. Till date, I can never get enough of it!

I believe digitalisation has been one of the biggest game-changers in the food scene globally. In this world full of hashtags and trends, people overall love to try out #What’sTrending - be it dance, reels or food! With social media, exploring new recipes and cuisines, making your own version of the same and again sharing it further has become a ritual so to say. I am glad that people are now paying more attention to flavours and happily accepting cuisines from around the globe. Online learning has become possible, so many have also taken up culinary arts as their profession. All in all food is getting more recognition which it totally deserves. Any tips for aspiring chefs? Becoming a professional chef is not an easy task, but I have a lot of hope from today’s youth and the coming generations. My mantra for life is to take challenges head on, with a smile on your face. Never be afraid to try something new! Be patient, steadily explore your potential and follow your dream wholeheartedly. For that you may have to get out of your comfort zone and go that extra mile. In the beginning, you might tumble but the ‘fruits of your labour’ will be really sweet and bring you happiness along with laurels. And once you are successful, never forget your roots. Keep acquiring knowledge! Best wishes to each and every aspiring chef. April 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 49

INTERVIEW

My Journey with

Celebrity food critic, influencer and host Gaurav Tandon who was one of the judges of the Filmfare Middle East F and B Night spoke to Manju Ramanan on his tryst with the world of good food!

Food

When did you realize that food is serious business in your life? I have always been a foodie from the time I remember. Till date I don’t know anything that I would love more than a good meal. We were talking to the President of SONY TV when they wanted to launch a TV show in the UAE and he asked me “what would you like to do a show on,“ and my instant answer was “Can we do a show on food” . We started with ‘Eating Out’ (now modified to Weekend Out) and the rest

50 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST April 2022

is history. The show has been going on for 14 years now. We actually do 5 TV shows on food and it is certainly a significant business vertical for us! Do you cook. What can you make? I am actually a very good cook but I don’t enjoy cooking! I don’t have the patience for it. But if I have someone to do all the work for me I can make great Lobster Thermidor and Paella! What was your journey towards realizing your TV show? I wanted to produce TV shows and not host them. It was my wife Kritika who pushed me to host my first show. Hosting came naturally to me as I was already hosting the evening prime time show for 11 years on the number one radio station in the UAE. The show was an instant success and then I started enjoying hosting it.

looks to me, K KOMPANY will NOT do it. How has life changed after your baby was born. Any new foods you learnt about? Life has changed 360 degrees after Kyra was born. It has been the most fulfilling experience of our lives. Kyra has give both of us purpose and we have understood the need to balance ( work – life balance). Yes I learnt about baby food after Kyra was born! What is are the three rules for success The 3 Cs for Success in that order.. - Consistency - Creativity - Change But post Covid I have also added - Credibility - Collaboration and - Compassion!

How did you manage your first setback? Haha ! This is a funny story. Our first setback came when I was about to launch our first TV show Weekend Out on SONY TV. We had shot in 6 restaurants for our first 2 episodes and I had hired a production company to produce the show for us. That time there was no food shows here in this region. The restaurants also didn’t know what the show would turn out to be so permissions to shoot were difficult to come. And as bad luck would have it 10 days before submission of the episodes when I went to the edit studio the guys said they lost tapes of one full episode. (yes, we used to shoot on tapes at that time, can you believe it!). If I didn’t submit the show on time I would have had to pay a penalty of 20,000 USD. I fired the production company overnight, hired 2 people as freelancers and started my own company immediately. I reshot all 3 restaurants and somehow, we managed to submit on time. So actually, I became a production house because of my first set back. A blessing in disguise. How many types of cuisines have you tried? Oh my God difficult to answer with exact number but I have tried a lot of food. I promise you there is not much that I haven’t tried in the last 14 years..after reviewing more than 2000 restaurants in more than 23 countries around the world. How has Kritika been integral to your professional growth? Kritika has been the most integral part of my growth. In fact, all my growth can be attributed to her. She is a visionary and has a big role to play in all out strategic decision making. I never take a decision without consulting her and having her OK. If she is not convinced, no matter how good the opportunity April 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 51

Striking a High Note

They are young, raring to go and keen to make a mark in the F and B scene in Dubai. Hari S Kaimal, Founder and CEO, Goldmead Hospitality and Sanju Nair, CFO, Goldmead Hospitality, speak to Manju Ramanan on their journey from the

healthcare industry to the food industry in Dubai.

meet Sanju and Hari at the F and B Night at the Canvas Hotel where they have won the honour of being the Best Pool and Sky Lounge/bar. Chatty, fun and enterprising, the duo is from the healthcare background, but have an innate passion for food. But first on how they met. As Hari says, “I came to Dubai in 2013 and I worked in India, US and Singapore and here in the healthcare industry. I met Sanju Nair on the first day of my work and we connected instantly. He was into accounting and finance, the guy we went to for salaries, moving allowances etc.” The two hit off and met for lunch nearly every day, trying out different food places in and around JLT where their office was located. Since the duo ate out a lot, be it Asian, Indian, fast food, steaks and pizzas and the works, they decided to start a small venture in the F and B industry. They started a small cigar lounge called Underdogs in what was once the Melia Hotel. They demolished the earlier lounge and rebuilt it from scratch including changing the tiles and the look of the space. “We even hand-picked the tiles and added funky quotes here and there to spruce it up,” says Hari. “We spent a lot of money on it since it was our first venture,” adds Sanju. The duo also has a fashion distribution business wherein they are into

the distribution of designer fashion bags, but that is on an autopilot mode. It was Hari’s brother who was visiting them who suggested that the duo start a full-fledged bar and restaurant for a wholesome experience and the idea hit home. The two, then started looking for spaces to start their work. “The same year, we started Bombay Bandstand at the Royal Ascot, a Bombay street food eatery – with a spread of vada-pavs, pav bhaji and the works.” They opened it in July that year and built a culinary team. Due to the pre Covid situation, they even grew the business, 30-40 percent month on month. But then Covid happened, they were stuck with two outlets and coming back to business was an uncertainty after a 4-month long break. “We had decided to cut our losses and shut it down but I guess the F and B industry was meant to be and once the lockdown lifted, a lot of work happened. Both places picked up and did well and are doing pretty well till date,” says Hari. That is when they decided that F and B would now be their main business and viewed two places every week and finally narrowed down the roof of the Aloft Hotel at Mina road, Port Rashid for their next venture. They named it High Note Pool and Sky Lounge and today it is a successful initiative. With stunning views of the skyline of Dubai, the place has a swimming pool, a beautiful lounge space, the bar and some great music that caters to all nationalities. “We also have Filipino bands playing here apart from the regular ones,” says Sanju.

How do they handle the harsh summers? “As we speak, we are drawing plans to enclose the space but we are conscious that the view of the lounge stays intact,” says Hari. “The place opened on December 15th last year and the journey has been very interesting. The Expo 2020 bought in a lot of different kinds of people to Dubai as well.” Their next venture, opening shortly, is best suited for all those people who live near Jebel Ali - an Indian restaurant at the Oaks Ibn Batuta called the Saffron Boutique. A Pan Indian restaurant with a full assortment of dishes from all over India, it is a large property,” says Hari. The restaurant will add to the fine dining spaces in Jebel Ali and is scheduled to open shortly! The sky is the limit for this dynamic duo who will soon venture into other businesses apart from food! Let’s wait and watch them soar!

SAPORITO

Italian flavours to satiate your taste-buds! Pizzas to pastas and the yummiest fondues - Saporito is the place to be for the most flavorsome Italian and Mexican cuisines, finds Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

S

aporito means flavorful, and that’s exactly how we would describe the food when we visited this Italian food joint. Nestled in Oudh Metha, it makes you leave behind all the bustle of the busy street outside. Spacious and well-lit, the restaurant looks inviting and doesn’t make you regret one bit once you do decide to try on their Italian or Mexican cuisine. Food We started off our journey of Italian flavours with some amazingly appetizing starters. The Cheese Corn Balls and the cream of tomato soup came first, with the cheese garlic bread. Crisped to perfection, the corn balls are something we’d strongly recommend. All of these came with dips that enhanced their flavours. We also tried their Tex Mex Wedges which is a must-try especially if you are a large group. Their servings are generous… This dish of crispy potato wedges served on a bed of refried beans 54 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST April 2022

topped with lots of nacho cheese, tomato salsa, sour cream and seasonal guacamole will make you clear off the plate down to the last bite. For the mains we tried the Handmade Ravioli – a lush preparation in thick sauce consisting of small pasta envelopes stuffed with a mix of spinach and ricotta cheese. Again a dish we’d recommend. For the pizzas, we tried the Chef’s special BBQ pizza – topped with barbeque sauce, smoked vegetables, caramelized onions and mozzarella and we also tried their Mediterranean Pizza, with a lavish spread of capers, olives, basil leaves, artichokes, mozzarella and Mediterranean sauce with sundried tomatoes. On the chef’s recommendation we also tried their Spicy Sundried Tomato and Basil Fondue with Pine Nuts – warm, cheesy and delicious, this one’s an absolute must-try especially for cheese-lovers! For the desserts we dug into their chef’s special - Belgium Chocolate Mousse, as well as Death by Chocolate, both delightful chocolate treats to round up the savoury course. All the ingredients were really fresh, and the dishes cooked to perfection. The pizza base is made in their own kitchens, they inform us. Their cooking time is a minimum and the quantity of servings generous. The food was a perfect mix of herbs and flavours. What’s more this pure vegetarian restaurant even has Jain options. We also quite enjoyed their mocktails. Ambience Spacious and well-lit, the place is sparsely decorated but done in good taste. The place gives you the feel of an American all-day diner. The tables can easily seat large groups, and especially with their spreads, it makes the dining very comfortable. Service Prompt and friendly, the staff is courteous and their recommendations worth considering. The service was quick and efficient.

Verdict Whether it’s a fun outing with friends or an elaborate dine-out with family, the restaurant is perfect for both. The authentic flavours certainly ensure that you will want to visit here again.

Vega by Puranmal A luxurious experience in rich flavours and culinary heritage! From varied multi-cuisine menu to lush dining options, this signature theme fine-dining restaurant has something for all, finds Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

Vega by Puranmal is undoubtedly one of the city’s most popular fine dining restaurants. With a rich culinary legacy that the house of Puranmal has come to be associated with, this signature theme restaurant also offers a wide variety of cuisines and has come to be known as one of the best in progressive eateries. So, while the brand is known for its desi flavours, their other cuisines are just as popular and loved. But eating here is not just a delectable culinary treat, as we found out one lovely afternoon. The place has its own art gallery that houses some of the most beautiful and contemporary art works and the choicest collections, making it a delightful experience for its patrons. Food We began our lavish lunch with a refreshing round of starters. And what better than some much-loved street foods to dig in for whetting our appetites. So Pani-Puri, Sev-Puri, Dahi-Puri, Bhels led the way to the larger grill Mixed Kabab Platter comprising an assortment of different varieties - paneer tikkas, mushroom tikkas, the kebabs, potatoes and cauliflower! Then we also tried the mushroom preparations – one in hot garlic sauce and the other spinach based. Then came our absolute favourite - the very famous Naram Dil Tikki (delicately spiced cottage cheese roundels dipped in cornflakes and 56 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST April 2022

deep-fried to perfection). Not just the desi starters, we also had their Hummus with Crispy Breads and they tasted just as delicious. Orange juice and lassis are what we’d recommend alongside. For the main course, we dug into their Puri-Chhole – an absolute must-try and a Puranmal favourite. The puris are a highlight as unlike the maida (fine flour) preparations, these are prepared using whole wheat flour. Also the kulchas are highly-recommended. Not just the desi delights, their other cuisines are equally well done. We also tried their pastas and pizzas and the flavours hit home instantly. Choosing from amongst so many delicious options just got more difficult here! But the treat for our taste-buds didn’t stop here. What came on the dessert is what left us completely bowled over. We had a tough time choosing between the usual favourites - faloodas and the kulfis - to their unique gulab jamun flavoured ice-cream and the ras malai flavoured ice-cream! Yes, Puranmal has introduced their specialty signature Authentic Indian Mithai ice-creams with Kwality under which they are planning to introduce many more flavours across. This one again is a must-have. While the food ticked high on all counts from flavours to the generous portions, what we were most impressed with was the variety. The restaurant doesn’t just score high on authentic Indian flavours that it is known for, but also Oriental, Italian and Arabic cuisines.

Ambience Sprawling and spacious, the restaurant offers a variety not just in its menu but also the seating. Pleasant evenings call for an outdoor eating space, and its most tastefully done. It offers enough privacy for an intimate romantic dining. For a quick lunch hour break, there’s the ground level eating space. A lavish treat with friends or family, calls for their upstairs dining area. They also have a private dining space that could host up to 20 guests. From exquisite Tanjore paintings to fine pieces of handicrafts, gift items and collectibles from across the globe to contemporary works and stunning jewellery, the gallery is a haven for art lovers. “Every piece has been selected with great finesse and holds a story,” he tells us. We can’t help but notice how the place is a treat for all senses. Raising the bar While Puranmal is known for the desi foods, this one has wowed us even with the other cuisines. Mr Imitaz tells us, “Yes we are known for our foods, but we also cater to a huge clientele not from Indian origin. So there’s something for everyone, including Indian patrons who crave for international flavours and cuisines. We at Puranmal want to keep pushing the envelope and we are thrilled to be doing it so successfully.”

INTERVIEW

Towards a

Stylish Vegan Lifestyle Ankit Sanghvi, Owner, Epitome, Dubai speaks to Manju Ramanan on Dubai’s first licensed vegan restaurant and bar, Epitome.

How did you start your venture?

Epitome is Dubai’s first licensed vegan restaurant. F&B is at the core of our family business; after running a few successful restaurants in Mumbai and Pune we knew that we were ready for Dubai and felt confident in finding Epitome its second home and our first one overseas. With Epitome in India; we have been very lucky and are grateful to our guests as despite the pandemic our patrons love us and keep coming back hence why we thought to make a bold move even during these unconventional times; that’s how much we believe in our

concept and thankfully it has lived up to its expectations. Tell us about your USP?

We at Epitome, offer all our guest’s meat-free and dairy-free cuisines. We aim to break the myth successfully that “Vegetarian food is super-boring and is all about salads and curries. We wanted to show how the high-end, desirable, and stylish vegan lifestyle can be for a culinary experience.Vegans globally are looked at as people who only eat salads and slowly that perception is changing. Growing up as a vegetarian in India, I am used to

eating a large variety of dishes that are vegan and vegetarian that taste amazing and that is my mission to share with the world that we need not harm the animals for our pleasure and there is a quite a lot of amazing, attractive and yummy food that is vegan and vegetarian. Along with the food, the elegant interiors feature beautiful artistic elements, Roman statues, turquoise handpainted walls, zig-zag floors making the place top-notch. And the amazing ambiance will make your dining experience even more memorable. Guests can choose to

enjoy their fine dining on the outdoor terrace where the entire skyline is visible. We also offer Ladies nights, Bollywood Nights, and other special offers. The venue features Art Deco elements, Romanesque statues, and a plethora of vegan options How do you plan to expand?

We at Epitome aim to provide all our customers with a unique experience. Our team is constantly traveling, observing, and learning to stay ahead of global trends. This was also one of the main reasons for us to choose Dubai as our first venture abroad as this city and the UAE’s mission is to offer everything that is the best to the world which matches Epitome’s motto- to offer a new vegetarian experience in the work and continue to innovate and evolve. You are totally vegetarian. Have you managed to convert the meat-eaters to try veggie food?

We are always going to be strong followers of vegan and vegetarian lifestyles and have taken it as a family business goal to open more branches around the globe to spread our love for animals, awareness about the harmful effects, meat can have on the health while

still sharing our love for music, parties, and good times. How is constant innovationpart of your industry?

Our biggest challenge is convincing people to try the food as they still think it may taste bad but we insist on them trying it once and we are very sure that they will be asking for a second helping in no time. We strategically chose our first location in Dubai close to old Dubai as these the residents who know our brand from Mumbai and it was a calculated risk to some extent but in the future, we would love to open in New Dubai with a completely different nightlife and music scene that is not limited to Indian/ Pakistani music. Our Biggest success – seeing our restaurant and bar full almost every day of the week; as we too were met with a lot of skeptics who don’t think a fully vegan and vegetarian restaurant can work but this is what excites us as we want to break this myth and also show the vegans/ vegetarians a good time who sadly; usually end up eating from the “sides” part of the menu at most famous restaurants in the world.

cuisines, and they appreciate the evolution of the culinary world. Our chef believes in creating recipes and dishes that do not exist or have never been experimented with before.

What do you keep in mind when you design your menu?

Do you have personal inputs when the menu is designed?

People in Dubai are much more open to trying out a variety of

Yes definitely. From the start I was well engrossed with my chef and till date and in the future as well. April 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 59

INTERVIEW

You are as big as your dreams! For Aftab Ahmed - owner of Miza Steel FZE, Miza General Trading LLC and Bhushan Steel Trading LLC Dubai - a person is as big as his dreams. “I had never imagined that I will achieve so much in life, but I was sure that I will never give up without trying first,” says the leading businessman as we catch up with him at his beautiful home. With his beautiful wife Zeynap and three doting daughters Isra Aftab (13), Mairaj Aftab (11) and Azima Naaz Aftab (3), Aftab says that this is his paradise. Looking back, he says that it’s been a long journey, but he’s been fortunate to have been blessed with not just success at work, but a happy family life too.

Gangawali to

Dubai!

Hailing from a small village in India to becoming a leading businessman in Dubai, owner of Miza Steel FZE, Miza General Trading LLC and Bhushan Steel Trading LLC Dubai, Aftab Ahmed’s inspirational story is one of hard-work, persistence, business acumen, but most of all of grit, passion and determination to succeed. And as Aakanksha Naval-Shetye traces his journey to the top, the self-made biz honcho talks about his key to success, balancing work with family life and reveals a strong connect to his roots

Humble beginnings “I come from a small village, Salawat Nagar Gangawali District Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, India. I was born in a family of farmers, and belong to an agricultural background. So besides studying, I grew up working on farms,” shares Ahmed. It was after his 12th that he came to Delhi for BUMS Graduation, post which he spent a year in Mumbai before deciding to come to Dubai to try his hand and luck in business. “Once, when I was in Delhi, during my struggle period, I was watching people, I saw people driving cars, and thought that this is the life I want. I read about the achievers, the businessmen and one day I decided that I want to become a successful businessman too!” Dubai calling! Aftab moved to Dubai to make his dream come true in 1995. “I failed in the first three years, then luck turned again and I moved to Khartoum Sudan, and started dealing in leather with El Waleed Fayat, and the business picked up. By the third year, I started dealing in steel and that business really took off, so I gave up leather and only dealt in steel and moved to Dubai,” he adds. Registering more than 200 million turn-over in less than 3 years, there’s been no looking back for him since. Keys to success! He says, “As a businessman, my rules have been simple. I believe that if you are straight in your dealings and work hard, then no one can stop you. Don’t cheat anybody, don’t hurt anybody.

Trust is the real currency I’ve earned!” As for taking risks, he shares that you have to watch the markets and understand before investing. “No business is risk-free, but there is a time to sell and a time to buy, that takes fine-tuning and an understanding,” he states, adding that he’s also invested in a lot of real estate. Family first “My daughters, my family is my real investment,” says the doting dad and husband. “The pandemic changed me a lot. Now the business is on an auto-pilot mode and the sysytems are in place, so my focus are my kids. I don’t want to miss out on their childhood! So I’m there as a father, a friend, a driver, even a cook (laughs). In fact, my social life now largely revolves around my daughters and I want to spend as much time as possible with them.” A lover of cars and 60s music, Aftab admits that he enjoys time more watching cartoon films with his children. “Music has a strong connect. I feel the lyrics of the 60s era go straight to the heart. I play the same music even while working out in the gym,” he laughs. Social take! For Aftab, there will always be a strong connect with his roots back home in India. “My soul belongs there. I don’t visit home often, but it’s very much a part of me,” he says. Besides, his other investments back in India too, he runs a factory with about 120 people. “I have not made a single rupee from it, but I have ensured that it stays running to keep the people of the village employed. I don’t look at it as a profit venture, but a heartfelt one,” he shares. Vision ahead Looking ahead, Aftab is currently working on his new factory in Sudan. “I have also invested in Gold trading,” he shares. “There is no end to what you want, but I don’t run after money. Like I said, I my focus is now being with the kids, and seeing them settled happy and healthy,” he smiles.

INTERVIEW

Papon

Photography : Yasir Arafat

Unplugged!

A versatile singer, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, Papon is as known for his soulful numbers and melodious Bollywood tracks, as he is known for his independent compositions that reflect a strong connect to folk music. And now the multi-talented artiste turns filmmaker as he is all set to present to the world more of the ancient classical sounds as well as folk music of the North East through two upcoming films. We caught up with the multi-talented singer in Dubai, where he performed at a concert with Shaan. And in an exclusive chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, Papon talks about dodging the trappings of stardom and also reveals more about him turning a filmmaker

How exciting is it performing in Dubai? Very. It’s been a while since I’d performed in Dubai. In fact, it’s been a while performing anywhere because of the Covid situation, but yes, it’s always really exciting to sing and perform for a LIVE audience. There’s a strong commercial factor in playback singing, but more creative freedom in the independent music scene. What’s the draw for you and how do you balance between the two? The draw is always good music… It can be from any style, genre, space, film, non-film, folk, modern… And as an artiste I just want to do good music that touches and moves you in some way. So I take it one good song at a time! That’s the only thing that takes me in search of going deeper in this art. Creatively what’s the difference then? Indie music is like saying your own story, so you get to say it the way you want to and you feel those emotions more closely. But then again, if it’s a film song, it’s still a story, it’s of another person, but you are still the medium to tell that story, so you do it with all honesty. In fact, it’s more challenging to be true to someone else’s story, and there’s a bigger responsibility there. So woh toh nibhana hai, you have to become that story, become that song even if it’s not yours. At the end of the day, it’s all the same emotions, yours or mine.

What are the songs that resonate most closely with you? A lot of my film songs… I’m very romantic a person, so most of my songs in films have also been romantic. So being a hopeless romantic, I think every romance is beautiful and I relate to all my romantic songs. But otherwise, my song like ‘Main toh chalta hi raha’, that would be one of the songs that describes a bit of my journey. How do you look back? Was there a struggle phase? I live from song to song. I don’t know which one my next Bollywood popular song will be. I don’t plan really. So, it’s never been a struggle. For me it’s always been another day of singing and making songs. Now that I am here, I look back and feel like okay I have done some stuff, and that’s why I am being asked these questions (laughs). But otherwise I’m the same person I was when I first started. People have come to associate you more with art than the commerce aspect of music… Thank you for saying this. This has been how my father and mother were as artistes and somewhere I feel I’m only taking forward that legacy, that belief, that emotion. I remember my father had once told me, ‘do whatever kind of music, just do it with honesty and so it with your heart’, so that’s what I have held on to. I do a song only if I feel it or relate to it. How do you avoid the trappings of stardom? Sab jhooth hai, sab mithya hai, sab maya hai! That’s how I would put it. I have seen it with my parents, they were very famous, respected artistes, successful musicians and truly legends. I have seen their graph… dealt with pressures of being a star kid, seen the fame, the glory, I have also seen the downward journey, the end! So the stardom doesn’t really matter to me. All that matters is whether someone is really respecting my work, my take on life, are my friends believing in me as an honest person, so for me that matters more. Rest all comes and goes!

Tell us more about your filmmaking. We heard it will highlight music and the culture from the North East… I’m actually working on two films. One is on Vaishnavite music designed 550 years back, very classical, grammatical in nature. I’m amazed how the world hasn’t heard it. Even the Hindustani music we know is 300 years old, so this is older than that. It’s still being practiced but the world doesn’t know about it. Another film is on the music from the North East that is less heard which is what I want to document and bring to the world. I travelled to places with no roads, no boats, no electricity, lived with some tribals to document their way of living and their music. I heard sounds I had never heard before, so I want to reproduce it and bring it to the world. It may take a long time though. What would you say has been a game-changer in the music industry - the various platforms that are available today? Yes, definitely. It has brought to us a lot of music that we would not have heard of otherwise. India is under this huge Bollywood music umbrella and it has great production value project wise, but thanks to the internet, a lot of musicians who didn’t get through that narrow bottle-neck of Bollywood can now present their music, be heard and they can reach out to people. So there’s good music, bad music… both. When I started as an independent artiste, we didn’t have as many platforms which is good for artistes today.

B

eing a hopeless romantic, I think every romance is beautiful and I relate to all my romantic songs.

Things you didn’t know about Papon I cut my own hair. I cook and I really like cooking fish I love window shopping.

I take a lot of forest trips and walks. In fact, forest and trees are my first love and music is my second love!

I love to paint and draw! That’s what I had started off as a kid and music came much later. I’d like to get back to it someday.
