Hera Pheri, the cult classic comedy, is getting another sequel. The rst lm, which was released in 2000, featured Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, and Paresh Rawal. The stars reprised their roles as the original trio in the second lm, Phir Hera Pheri, which was released in 2006. Since then, fans have been waiting for a third instalment. And now, it looks like we’re closer than ever to getting it. According to reports, producer Firoz Nadiadwala has con rmed Hera Pheri 3, with Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, and Paresh Rawal returning to the comedy lm franchise. He said that fans will get to see the lm “very soon with the same star cast.” He added, “The story is in place, and we are working on certain modalities. It’ll be made in the same way, retaining the innocence of the characters.” So far, the lm’s director has not been locked in, but an announcement is reportedly coming soon.

Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor are soon going to be parents, and the internet is in a tizzy alright. Ranbir’s late father, Rishi Kapoor, is sorely missed during this momentous time for the Kapoor family. The actor, who passed away two years ago, had once shared his thoughts about fatherhood and Ranbir Kapoor starting a family. In an old interview, Rishi Kapoor opened up about his bond with his son and the kind of bond he hoped Ranbir would have with his kid. “He (Raj Kapoor) did not have time for his children. Either he was working for someone, or he was directing and starring in his own movies. So when I became a father, I decided to not shoot on Sundays and dedicate that day to my kids.” He added, “I know what I missed out with my father, so I made sure to ll in those gaps. Likewise, I am sure Ranbir will do something with his kid that he missed out on with me. I think I have inculcated a sense of tradition and culture in that boy.” Wise words indeed.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Don franchise, directed by Farhan Akhtar, is one series that has left fans eager for more. Buzz around Don 3 has emerged over the past few years as the lm is reportedly in the works. And now, it looks like there’s an exciting update coming from the makers. In Don 3, we will likely see Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan team up in a crossover of our dreams. As per reports, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan might share screen space in Don 3. Speculations around the lm resurfaced when Big B shared a black and white photo of a massive crowd outside a theatre for his lm, which arrived in 1978. Meanwhile, there are also multiple reports of a Don 3 script in the works. Excel Entertainment is eyeing a sequel to Don 2 (2011). While details about the next instalment are being kept under wraps, the possibility of two Bollywood legends returning to the franchise is exciting indeed.

Factor in his other commercial commitments and ventures and industry insiders peg the numbers to be at around Rs 1,500 crore. But interestingly, it’s not just the number-crunching at the Box-Office that his films have always been associated with. The actor has for quite some time now been churning out more substance, than just entertaining fare.

Doing films that are based on true incidents – whether a Kesari or Airlift or BellBottom – does that add that extra bit of pressure on you with expectations? The pressure is magnified definitely, especially when there’s history involved, every aspect needs to be correct otherwise you’ll have nothing but a storm on your shoulders, and all efforts go out of the window. But the benefit of having the courage to make films based on true events is that they bring knowledge or history or even culture for that matter back into our busy lives. Some of my films are now being screened more in schools, and that in itself is a huge success rather than being they want to experience something refreshing, that’s where I feel I need to provide an assortment of content. Everyone loves ice-cream, but no one wants ice-cream every time they go out, same is the case with films…
Tell us something about your upcoming release Raksha Bandhan, what made you choose this film? As the name suggests, Raksha Bandhan is a story celebrating the unique bond of a brother-sister. Strangely, our industry is a couple of decades old now but we don’t have too many films on this special relation. It was the simplicity of the story which attracted me to Raksha Bandhan. With the availability of better technology, our films are now high on action, VFX, they are larger-than-life, but somewhere we’ve forgotten the power of simple story-telling and that’s what this script reminded me of. There’s a beautiful tagline of the film, ‘Return To Feelings’ that’s what this film is all about. Raksha Bandhan is high on emotions. a Blockbuster. Changing people’s perception for the better is a far greater thing in this world than an award as your mantel piece.
What’s your take on the pandemic affecting the release of films and their success? More than anything, for me it’s more heart-breaking for the technicians of our industry who had to rush back to their villages, some never made it, some must have and still are

entertainment superstar and being an actor of substance and impact? How? By taking a big gulp, and swallowing any ego or bravado that may stand in the way of me making something worthwhile and me making something that’s commercial. Remember, commercial films don’t always work out! Even comedy entertainers can flop. It all comes down to whether you’re prepared to sink or swim, that’s the only difference. Some can find the thought of sinking too much of a gamble, but I have sunk many times and I’m still here, so what is there to be afraid of? I know I can swim no matter how deep the water may be. Faith and strength from within are a necessity to survive the everchanging tide, especially in this industry. The audience doesn’t always want to laugh, sometimes suffering from lack of work, money, and opportunity. Many are thinking about the audience, about film producers, actor’s projects being put on hold, but we all still have roofs over our heads. The industry will always bounce back, hoping people will always need TV and cinema to take them away from daily stress. Our struggle will continue till this virus goes away completely, but that doesn’t mean we hold out till it does, we learned to live with the current circumstances and make the most of it as safely as possible. An entertainer should never stop entertaining just because his audience is less, they will only come back if there is something to come back to.
Money-spinner of Bollywood, Boxoffice King, Superstar, Khiladi… so many titles, which one appeals to you the most? Being a father will always be my greatest title because titles come and go according to people’s moods, but being a father to my kids, and a father-figure to many others will never be taken away, that title will never fade. I can work hard, try my best, give as much as I can to my industry, but my work doesn’t hold me at night, it doesn’t take my pain away, it can keep me busy but my kids keep me fulfilled…

It has changed completely! Earlier I used to work to feed my family, I never thought of doing something I enjoyed, it was always about survival. Now I love my work, I don’t fear surviving anymore, now I work to help others survive, which gives me the best feeling. The more I work, the more others can work, and so on. My drive is to change lives now, I’m no longer climbing the ladder, I’ve climbed it so much, now I want to change the view, the view of many situations in India. Earlier I used to only want to do action, then I only wanted to make others laugh, now I want to make a difference, that’s my drive! You continue to be the fittest stars, giving the young ones a run for their money… What would you say is your secret and what’s the one advice you’d give them? That’s very generous of you to say… My advice is simple, don’t cheat… eat right, train right, sleep right! Treat your body like how you’d like your children to be nurtured. You are only as healthy as what you allow your body to consume, if you give it the wrong things it will rebel against you one day. Don’t let that day arise. Life is all about moderation, everything in moderation gives you balance, anything that is not in moderation will tip you off, and once you’re falling it becomes harder to regain the balance, not impossible, just harder. What’s your take on the OTT changing the entire face of entertainment dynamics – with film releases as well as content? I think OTT is what it is, it’s part of our future, I’ve always said listen to your kids, my son told me very clearly when he was a teenager “OTT is the future, get involved, don’t be a dinosaur!” So I listened and I’m glad I did, because entertainment is entertainment regardless of where you are sitting. A family guy, a doting dad, a loving husband, a bankable star, how do you manage all roles so beautifully and which has been most challenging? To manage it all one needs to wake up early, there is so much one can do before the sun rises. Anything and everything is possible when you start your day right. Without discipline you are a slave to your own moods, so be disciplined. As for me, my most challenging role

Making it in films was a whole new ball game I had to learn to play on my own, but I had their blessings every day, and that’s what made everything I’ve ever tried to do fall into place in its own sweet way… So much of super-stardom and fame, yet you are one of the most down-to-earth people… How do you not let so much of fame not affect you and what’s the one lesson you hold most dear? Fame is something others have control over, audience, media, fans, critics, they all decide your fate, when you admit that you are only as important as the people make you, and remember these same people can break you, you eventually come to terms with the fact that it doesn’t matter how famous you were five or 10 years ago, fame is fleeting if you don’t handle it maturely, and nurture it daily. Actors are just regular humans with interesting scripts withSurrounding(sometimes).yourselftherightpeople is key to being grounded, like all good Kung Fu movies, never forget your roots, never forget where you came from, who are you without the crowds because when the curtains are drawn, you’re just a man who got lucky. I think when we started, more than fifteen years ago, we didn’t think that ‘okay, we are designing gowns that are floor-length with long trains and we did not think that we’d be worn by celebrities.’ We just designed them because we wanted to. We didn’t think about who was going to wear them or buy them. At that point, no one was wearing gowns, like none of the actresses were wearing gowns on the red carpet. They used to be wearing sarees and all. It started with celebrities wearing our gowns. It first startedwith Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu, who started to wear our gowns, and it just kind of really took off from there because other celebrities noticed, and then we started dressing celebrities often. At that time, actresses did not have any stylists, so we used to get calls from actresses, their offices, or their managers, and then we used to meet them, so it was all very Gauri and Nainika Katrina Kaif personal. We used to sit with Aishwarya and decide how it would go. We used to sit with Katrina Kaif and Bipasha, and it was a lot of fun because we started designing gowns for them and soon they all started wearing our gowns. Suddenly, a lot of actresses were wearing our gowns for their red carpets and premieres, especially Aishwarya Rai, Katrina Kaif, and Deepika Padukone. Nainika: Deepika wore our gown for her first Filmfare Awards, for Om Shanti Om, where she won the Filmfare Award for Best Debut. That was very special to Gauri and me, and we were very happy about it. It was like finding that you’ve imagined something and people have loved and worn it, but no one else was doing it at that time. It was a lot of fun, and it was probably a watershed moment in our careers because women wanted to wear our outfits to special occasions. Every bride started having a black-tie event, a cocktail party, or a bash aimed at youngsters for her wedding. Now it has become common for the bride and the groom to have a party that is blacktie where the theme is

Some people like making a very bold statement, others like to keep it clean, so yeah, each star has their own style gowns and everything, but then it just started. I think looking at the actresses, a lot of brides started doing that and people started wanting to wear gowns for their special occasions, so occasion dressing took off for us where there was no market for it in India. So it was a lot of fun and, yeah, no looking back. Do you feel your dreamy ensembles have a certain connection with Bollywood Gauri:fashion?
When you say dreamy and Bollywood, the whole thing becomes a fantasy. And Nainika and I say the same thing about our clothes. We always say that when someone steps into a Gauri Nainika dress, they are transported to a different world. They step into the shoes of a princess or a Bollywood star or a movie star because it is like highstyle glamour right now. In some ways, we are selling that dream… Nainika: … I wouldn’t say selling the dream but women are living their dreams in the clothes they buy from us. How would you say Bollywood fashion has evolved over the years when it comes to experimenting? Nainika: Fashion everywhere in the world has become international ever since social media started. The latest couture collections are literally on your mobile phones, done by the biggest designers internationally or done by Indian ones anywhere, right? I would say Indian and Bollywood fashion has become international. You can see Bollywood celebrities wearing international designers, carrying off bold and exaggerated silhouettes. Everyone has got a new statement. It is all about trying out something new and different and having the guts to do so. At red carpet events or film festivals, Indian actresses wear a lot of international designs. I believe that the world has moved forward and become one big place, and Bollywood has become the same way. Out of the many stars who’ve worn your designs, how would you define the individual styles of Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Kareena Kapoor Khan, who are major fashion icons in the world of cinema? Gauri: All of them can pretty much carry anything. They are confident and beautiful, and we’re sure they could wear anything. But definitely, each has their own style. Some people like making a very bold statement, others like to keep it clean, so yeah, each star has their own style, but yet they also understand that this is a brand that they are wearing and that brand has a certain philosophy and they can flaunt that philosophy as well. IS BOLLYWOOD MORE THE FOCUS THOUGH? HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WITH THE WIDE VARIETY AVAILABLE FOR ACTORS TODAY? I’ve gotten everything, or atleast I would say that the recent brigade of actors has gotten it all from the OTT and we do have a wider choice! But even with all those choices, I want to focus on good stories and good work. I’m not particular about where that story is coming from or meant to go, as long as it is a good story. Also I’m not a big fan of doing something in a language that I’m not comfortable with. Words carry a lot of power, so unless you are not good with the language, it’s not something I would say a yes to. Some things are colloquial so unless I learn it, it’s not something I would be too keen on. ARE YOU VERY SELF-CRITICAL? Yes, I am very critical of my own performances, so that way I’m never really satisfied. Maybe that’s a good thing, maybe I’ll stop trying if I start being happy with my performance! But having said that, I am satiated and satisfied with the projects I have been associated with because of the people I have gotten a chance to work with. The trust I have been given in the roles that I get to do and be a part of, that means a lot. But I do feel that there’s always a lot more that I can do. YOU HAVE TWO BIG BOLLYWOOD FILMS LINED UP AHEAD? Yes, there’s R Balki Chup with Dulquer Salman, and the teaser of the teaser just came up and people have shown a lot of love to that and they’re really curious. And then I have Sabbir Khan’s Adbhut with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Diana Penty, Rohan Mehra… so that’s also interesting and hopefully will be out soon. Then there’s also Mumbai Diaries Season 2 on the OTT. ARE THERE CERTAIN ROLES THAT YOU FIND YOURSELF DRAWN TO MORE? I genuinely feel that I want to participate and be a part of various genres, and just don’t want to be relegated to doing this or that. I really don’t want to be typecast. BUT ACTION ROLES NEED MORE EFFORT AND YOU HAVE BEEN APPRECIATED FOR THAT. WAS THAT EASY FOR YOU? Because I am never satisfied I do believe that everything I do can always be nicer-looking in terms of believability. So in that manner I’m not sure if it comes easy, but I don’t know how hard it is too. If you work at it, it’s a 50:50 (laughs). ANY ROLE IN RECENT TIMES THAT YOU WOULD HAVE WANTED TO DO? Elvis Presley! Though I would never think I’m worthy or capable but that’s a role that blew me off. When I saw Elvis and what Baz Luhrmann and Austin Butler have done, If I was ever to something like that, I will retire after that! CAN YOU DISASSOCIATE WITH YOUR SCREEN CHARACTERS EASILY OR FIND IT DIFFICULT TO GET OUT OF THE ROLES? I do tend to be a switch-on and switch-off actor because I like to treat my work like work. I feel as actors, you should be able to use your training and play that character in that moment, but the idea is to keep trying to be effortless and convincing.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST MEMORY OF DUBAI? My family and I always try to pull off the perfect surprises for each other, so this time we pulled off the perfect trip to Dubai and surprised my sister. I was in Dubai for Dubai Tourism so it was very special for me.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN THE GAME-CHANGER FOR YOU? I think The Family Man gave me the push for sure, but it was Scam 1992 that actually put me out there. Like my role got me noticed, it made people realise that I exist.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CONNECTION WITH DUBAI… I was two months old when I shifted to Dubai, then we moved to Bahrain, Doha, then Sharjah… I’ve lived all across, so I’m not just a Dubai kid, I’m a full Middle Eastern kid.

So I have been doing theatre, but it was something about being on the sets of a film that clicked for me and you know how people talk about love and you know when you know, so that’s what I felt about acting in a film.
WHAT IS THE REAL SHREYA LIKE? I don’t know how to describe myself. Like I know what I like and what I don’t, but who I am and what I am is a bit of a deeper existential question. But I am honest, I’m principled and that gets me into a lot of trouble (laughs). I have abnormal reserves of energy, so I can be fun, and boring too… But there are not a lot of people that I want to spend that energy on. I do love travelling though.

YOU HAVE PLAYED SOME VERY INTENSE CHARACTERS, SOME VERY GOOFY CHARACTERS AND MOST VERY ROMANTIC ONES. HOW ARE YOU IN REAL LIFE? Very much like my characters I think. Shayar sa banda hoon. Aapko kya lagta hai (laughs)!
It’s team work, good writer, good director, good cast… The important thing is for a producer to first select the right idea, the right concept for the audience and then as actors what we try is to make something that people can relate to and should be fun. It’s important that people enjoy the film in cinemas. Back home in Pakistan, the content in serials and TV shows is usually very serious, but when it comes to films, people want to be entertained whether it’s action or comedy or romance. Also good songs are a part of our culture so they’re important too. Both India and Pakistan share that love and culture. So the only secret is that I’ve been blessed to work with amazing people on beautiful films and shows. HOW HAS YOUR PROCESS OF CHOOSING FILMS OR SHOWS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? 20 years ago I was mostly doing serials, so the attempt was more to choose a subject that’s issuebased. But these days it’s become like a science that you have to make a serial in which people can relate to the issue, but it should have romance too. The hook has to be created like that. So the craft is different, the craft has changed between back then and now. So, accordingly the process of choosing has evolved gradually. Now when I do a film, I want to be sure that it will be entertaining. And when it comes to serials, it should have a story and a screenplay that works as a hook for the audience, so that people stay with that.

It’s been 25 years of my marriage and my career both, so Mashallah she is fine with it. In fact, she feels good about that. She is always very happy with my success. Earlier too she has always been supportive, but because she comes from a very conservative family, initially there were a few times when she used to worry, but she’s also aware of the nature of the work, so she knows. She herself is a producer now and is running a production company with my daughter Sana called Next Level Entertainment, so she is now part of the game.
I think the best thing I like is the respect. The respect I get from my fans and well-wishers, that is priceless. The richest of people don’t get the kind of respect that we get. It’s a blessing from Allah. So I accept it humbly and I pray that the this izzat and sehat always stays and yeh hamesha bani rahe.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR TAKEAWAY FROM THE FILM LONDON NAHIN JAUNGA? The character in the movie is very different from the real me. He’s very simple, jat banda hai, main itna jat banda hoon nahin, of course with the simplicity there are a few similarities there, but I enjoyed doing the character a lot because the accent is the same that I adapted for the earlier film Main Punjab Nahin Jaungi. So I was missing that accent and I have kept the same accent in this one. So that was fun.

YOU ARE ONE OF THE MOST HANDSOME STARS IN PAKISTAN, ONE OF THE FITTEST TOO… Not the fittest, not very handsome, but I look fine. There’s no secret either. The thing is that I don’t take too much stress. I used to worry a lot earlier, but now I don’t. When I initially started as a producer, it was very tough. And these days it’s even tougher, as everyone has their own temperaments. But I don’t stress, I know what not to worry about. So that’s one thing about me that I am very calm and that’s one of the reasons probably. The other thing is that I eat a lot and I jog a lot.
WHAT DO YOU MOST LIKE ABOUT BEING A STAR?
The respect I get from my fans and wellwishers, that is priceless. The richest of people don’t get the kind of respect that we get. It’s a blessing from Allah.
ONE ADVICE YOU WOULD WANT TO GIVE YOURSELF WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER? Back then I was not so health-conscious, so I feel if I was I would have been even better. Like I feel I’m fine now, but I could be better and I feel there are so many better than me too.

YOU HAVE PLAYED SUCH DISTINCT ROLES ON SCREEN, WHAT IS THE REAL YOU LIKE? A combination of all the characters you see, and some parts of the real me are there in all the characters. But having said that, at the same time as an artiste, the idea is to get under the skin of the character that I am playing instead of being myself and the whole idea is to subtract myself and instead extract that character out of me and bring that character forth. That’s the idea and that’s what I try to do. If you want to know who the real me is… I would say I am the person who is sitting right in front of you. What you see is what you get (laughs).

Absolutely! I am still single… But not ready to mingle. SO WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU CHANGE THAT – YOUR SINGLE STATUS? A guy who has everything that I want in life. But I haven’t found one yet.
Absolutely. All these dialogues are very close to what I feel love should be. And there are so many more things about love. I am old-school and I like the whole idea of writing letters and having phone conversations and going on long walks, on drives. So, I’m very traditional and old school like that.
WHAT’S THE WAY TO WIN YOUR HEART?
YOU AND HUMAYUN SHARE SUCH AN AMAZING SCREEN CHEMISTRY. TELL US MORE ABOUT IT? Yes, it’s more because we are such good friends off the camera and we both are professionals. What creates magic is that we try to build the scene together instead of doing it individually or being selfish as actors where I want to stand out or I want to look the best and be more worried about how I will look and take the lead. Instead, it’s more about building it together and I feel that when both of you are on the same page and want to make it more believable then there’s a lot of hard work involved, there are reading sessions involved, we rehearse a lot before the scenes, so there’s this understanding and professionalism. The magic comes naturally when we are on the same page because if I am not doing well or if he isn’t doing it well then there’s a crack somewhere and it shows. It won’t hit the audience the way it should. The more we are in character and feel passionately about being the screen character, the more authentic it looks. It connects stronger with people.
WHAT ABOUT YOUR SCREEN CHARACTER HAS STAYED WITH YOU? My relationship in the scenes with Saba Aapa. What I share with her is quite beautiful and profound and I think that’s what I will hold in my heart. It’s just beautiful.
IS IT MORE DIFFICULT TO FIND LOVE IN TODAY’S TIMES?
Not one, it’s a long list of things. I am not easy to please. I have set such high standards for myself, I became the man that I wanted to marry, I would say. So if you are talking about a man wanting to win my heart, he will have to work really hard and it’s not the big things for me, it’s the small tiny gestures and those small little things that make all the difference. I think love is enough… it’s all that can win my heart, just genuine love.

TALKING ABOUT PASSION, WE DO KNOW THAT YOU ARE VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT SOCIAL CAUSES THAT YOU STRONGLY SUPPORT. WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR STRENGTH FROM? My mother. She was also from this industry. So, I have been raised by a strong woman and I’ve had a lot of strong women around me while growing up. And I have always looked up to them. Especially being in this industry, you face a lot of stuff that is just thrown at you and at the same time you have to have a very thick skin to survive here. I have been given the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz. I was awarded by the State for my contributions towards art and cinema. I had already been speaking about a lot of issues, but that’s when I think it just added a lot more responsibility on my shoulders and being an artiste and having so much of influence and following, I always feel that we have to make the …Being an artiste, we have to take those steps that will bring about some positive change in the society and also fight for rights of the people who don’t have a voice. It’s disservice and a waste of opportunity if I can’t speak for the ones who need to be heard. So I try to make the most of all that I can for the people. best of the platform that has been provided to us. And that’s why I have been speaking up about issues that I believe in at all these platforms that I have been on. I like to take that opportunity and I like to make the most of it. AS A CHILD ARTISTE YOU STARTED OFF IN BOLLYWOOD, BUT YOU’VE GRAVITATED MORE TOWARDS SOUTH NOW? It was just a very organic shift that happened. I was doing films, then I kept getting more and they were all interesting scripts, so it just continued. But honestly today when the barricades of language and the lines dividing North and South cinema are getting blurred. So, Bollywood or South industry, it’s all just entertainment for us. DO YOU HAVE A WISH-LIST? I am a greedy actor so anywhere I can learn, gain experience… I’m game for it.
HOW ABOUT DOING A MOVIE WITH HRITHIK ROSHAN WITH WHOM YOU HAD SHARED SCREEN IN KOI... MIL GAYA AS A CHILD ACTOR? I call myself an entertainer, so whenever I get a chance why not?
WHAT’S BEEN THE GREATEST LEARNING AND TAKEBACK IN ALL THESE YEARS? I’m still evolving, learning every day. So I cannot say that there’s just one thing. But patience, time is what my experience has taught me. I always say that whichever job you choose, there’s hard work and patience, there are sacrifices, nothing comes easy. But the hard work makes you cherish it that much more. Like for me I have been working for over 20 years now. And looking at my journey, I would say hard work and patience have got me where I am today.
YOU’VE ALSO HAD YOUR SHARE OF TROLLING, CONTROVERSIES, RUMOURS…
All of that I don’t care about at all. There are crores of people and they have their own imaginations, their own minds, and opinions but it doesn’t matter to me. I don’t take trolls seriously. There are idle people with too much time on hand, looking for some bit of attention, but sorry they aren’t going to get any from me, so they can say what they want. I’m not wasting my energies on them. I am just not driven by comments or the feedback on the social media. I’m happy in my zone, so you can judge the film, but not me!
YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE IS ALMOST AS MUCH OF SENIOR ACTORS. HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK AT YOUR JOURNEY? You know time teaches and brings on so much of experience. I started off very young, I was 8 and now I’m 30, so almost a journey of 22 years in the industry. I’ve always been hustling, this is what I know, this is what I have been taught, this is what I do for a living, this is how I hustle, this is my passion, this is my everything. In fact, for the longest time I didn’t think I would already be on my 50th film till Maha came and the producer and the filmmaker pointed that out for me. But more than the number of films, the body of work I have done is what matters. Also for me what has mattered is that I’ve worked with some amazing filmmakers and people who’ve been involved in my journey that I could complete 50 films.

WHAT WAS THE GAME-CHANGER FOR YOU? The idea of being an actor was a gamechanger. I was eight years old when I decided to be an actor. It’s usually at the age of 15 - 16 when children decide what they’re going to do after college and after 10th, but before I could think of what I have to be, I was already an actor. So for me it just worked in my favour.
From being one of the most popular and famous child actors in Bollywood to now reigning the South marquee with her impressive performances, Hansika Motwani has come a long way. But more than resting on her laurels of having worked in the film industry for 22 years now, the actress is more excited about her promising slate of films ahead including her 50th film Maha that was up for release when we caught up with her. Hansika is equally elated about making her OTT debut this year, she tells Aakanksha Naval-Shetye in an exclusive interview
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 50TH FILM, MAHA! Not just my 50th film, Maha is also my first female-centric film, it’s a subject that I’ve never touched before, so yes it’s special. I’m a little nervous, a little excited and a little overwhelmed.
The actress is in Dubai where I catch up with her in her hotel room. Casually dressed, she looks stunning even without a speck of makeup. But the thing that charms you the most is her infectious smile and a vibrant energy that made talking to her an absolute delight. Her exuberance is balanced with a focused approach that belies her age, even as she brims with excitement talking about doing what she loves the most – facing the camera. FROM BEING A CHILD ACTOR TO NOW, HAS THERE BEEN A CHANGE IN THE METHODOLOGY OR THE PROCESS OF PREPPING AND FACING THE CAMERA?
Since my journey has been so organic, my experience in acting has been very organic too. I really haven’t had to put in any efforts to kind of work on facing the camera, I have only enjoyed this. Now it’s probably my bread and butter but when I started off, it was only my passion, it was what I loved doing and still do. So I think I would give the credit of appearing to be effortless to the organic journey I had.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY WATCHING MORE, BOLLYWOOD OR SOUTH CINEMA? Not just Hindi and South, I watch a lot of movies in general, as long as they entertain. In genres, I like comedy, romantic films, I love thrillers and action is a big yes. So except for horror, I enjoy all genres.
WHAT’S YOUR FITNESS MANTRA? I’m not a fitness freak as such but I do like to stay fit. Also my time zones during shoots don’t really help me to push myself to that super high level of fitness because there’s lack of sleep, hectic hours, flights in and out of Mumbai. But I do yoga and play squash.
WHAT’S NEXT AFTER MAHA? I have nine films lined up, and hopefully by the end of the year I’ll probably be on my 60th film. I have two releases in Telugu, four in Tamil and one web-series on Disney+ Hotstar called MY3. It’s a robotic love-story which is going to come soon and I’m very excited about it.
HOW HAVE YOU DEALT WITH THE PRESSURE OF CONSTANTLY BEING IN THE SPOTLIGHT RIGHT FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD? Simple. By being down-to-earth and the credit goes to the people around me as they keep me really grounded. My mom, my brother, and my core friends. So yes they keep me grounded, but I also believe I am someone who has become something from being a nobody, like when I was a child, I was a nobody. And I feel that if I have to connect with my fans or my audience, then I have to be like them, so that’s my thought process and I enjoy that. I want to be real. I can’t fake it. I can only fake in front of the camera because that’s my job. I am the kind of person who believes in vibes. Like if I like someone or don’t, it’s on my face. That’s as honest as I can be.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN NOT FACING THE CAMERA? I sleep, because that’s the one thing I don’t get to do when shooting. I’m constantly on the go, so sleep is a luxury. Also I paint, I cook. I’m very domestic. Also, I can’t be free for too long either. I start missing work and want to get back on sets. Like on a vacation I get bored after a few days and can’t wait to get back to work, so the vacation is boring for me!
IS IT EASY TO FIND LOVE IN THE INDUSTRY? With me, I am very clear that I won’t marry a boy from the industry, that much is for sure. I don’t want to shop from my own shop! I want to come back home and not feel like I’m still on sets (laughs). Because you know, you hustle so hard on the set, you are working so hard on the films all the time, then everyone anyway talks about movies, because we are a country that loves cinema and it’s a common topic so I just want to come back home.
SO WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU ON THESE TRIPS?
IT’S YOUR OTT DEBUT! Yes, also it’s a dual character I play. A robot and a human, so yes, it’s going to be fun, it’s a lovely character actually, a lot like the real me. There’s a lot more of Hansika in that. We all have that vulnerable side and I do too. But it’s just that I choose never to show that side. I just think it’s a passing phase and it will pass. It’s a feeling and feelings don’t stay forever, they pass. So I always tell myself that. This is something I learnt from Mr Amitabh Bachchan.
IS THERE ANY SPECIAL COMPLIMENT THAT YOU CHERISH THE MOST? There have been many compliments, but the one I get often is that I was meant to be an actor. For me that sums it all up. I do believe that it’s good that I chose to be an actor because it worked well for me. I did the right thing as I followed my passion and am doing what gives me happiness. I get to live different lives, do what I love, experience that and it gives me more space to learn too. I am happy where I am.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN ROMANCE AND LOVE? WHAT’S HAPPENING ON THAT FRONT? I believe in romance, but I am single right now. I think it’s beautiful to be in love and the whole journey is beautiful. When the right time comes I will settle down too. But as of now, I am very happy, and even if it sounds clichéd, “I am married to work” (laughs).
THIS DOMESTIC SIDE IS QUITE A SURPRISE? Well, been there done that (laughs). I’ve had my share of the crazies too, still do. I take off two times a year on solo trips. Yes, a lot of people don’t know that.
I’ll be out mostly having my ‘me’ time, discovering fashion, observing people, since we actors do pick up small nuances from watching people. I love travelling, but I prefer going to cities. Like I’m not a mountain or a beach person when I do solo trips. I can’t sit in a jungle. I am a concrete jungle person! You will always find me where there are lights. The place has to reflect my personality, like Dubai, Paris, New York, London. Basically some part of my profession has to be there… so there are lights and glamour (laughs).
TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR LOVE FOR DUBAI… I love Dubai in general. I love the shopping, it’s a lovely vibe. I like going to the restaurants that have a great ambience. So I’m not a foodie at all, but I like the vibe and music. I enjoy it.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH? Well we all have that vulnerable side and I do too. But it’s just that I choose never to show that side. I just think it’s a passing phase and it will pass. I remember we were shooting for a winter sequence in the heat and I asked him, ‘Uncle, are you not feeling hot?’ And he told me ‘child it’s all in the head. If I don’t allow myself to say it’s hot, its not.’ And it stuck with me and I believed in it completely. So I just think that good, bad, it’s a phase. Nothing is permanent and it’ll pass.

The actor also admits that doing a film like this was certainly out of his comfort zone. “It was a big challenge as I have never ever played a character like this or been in a move like this. But my partner in crime – Karan, is somebody who gave me a lot of confidence. Shamshera is a very angsty, a very angry film. Of course it has the light moments of comedy and romance and all of that but that’s something that doesn’t come naturally to me. So that was challenging and I had to work very hard on that. I have never slapped anybody in the movie also and here I was in this action bonanza, so everything was new for me. Everything was like tough, it was challenging. There were days when I was giving up, but I think the intention to tell this story to the
However, when it comes to playing the reel dad, he reveals that the script had it all. He says, “The characters were so strong. I was offered to play the son’s part and I offered to do the father’s role too as the valiant and fearless, Shamshera. That’s when the journey began with a lot of look tests and trying to make both the characters very different and at the same time very real and very cinematic.”
Shamshera is a film of many firsts! Hardly a surprise then that all sights were set on this bandit warrior tale for this reason, as well as several others. After all, the film marks Ranbir Kapoor’s return to the big screen four years after his last release – the much-acclaimed hit - Sanju in which Ranbir had won accolades for his performance as Sanjay Dutt. But what’s equally exciting about Shamshera is that not only do we get to see Ranbir Kapoor play the quintessential commercial action-hero for the first time, we also see him essay a double role as the father and son. “I have been playing roles in too many coming-of-age films in the last 15 years now. I have come of age now, my soul has been searched, and nothing is now left to search,” laughs Ranbir referring to his ‘lost boy on a journey to discovering and finding his true self’ films that he had become the poster-boy of. “We take our lives too seriously like we are these serious actors and change cinema and change the world but we are just here to make good movies to entertain the audience,” says Ranbir. The larger-than-life action-fuelled thriller bankrolled by Yash Raj Films and directed by Karan Malhotra showcases Ranbir in never-seenbefore avatars. From hard-core action to horse-riding, to the desi style song and dance, this one has Ranbir doing it all! The film also stars Sanjay Dutt. Ranbir and Dutt’s Sanju connection is hard to miss here. Talking about his own equation with the senior star, Ranbir adds, “Sanjay Dutt doesn’t take his stardom too seriously and I love him. I am so glad that I have his support and I have his hand on my head… He reprimands me, encourages me, inspires me and I’m very grateful to have that father figure in my life.” Interestingly, while Ranbir plays a father on reel, he is set to become a dad in real life too, as wife, actressproducer, Alia Bhatt and he are expecting their first child. When asked about being prepared for the role of a father in real life, he shares that while he’s thrilled with embracing fatherhood, he’s still preparing for it. “I’m not prepared yet and I will get qualified once the journey of fatherhood starts. What I am doing though is collecting people’s life’s experiences as a dad.”

As for Vaani, who plays Sona, a rustic dancer, the challenge lay in bringing out the desi. “The challenge was to channelize the inner desi, which was not too difficult too as it’s in our DNA. But it was interesting and a change to play someone so different from the contemporary modern roles and characters that I have played so far.”
Ask Ranbir who he could relate to more – the son, Balli or the father Shamshera – and the actor confesses that its neither. “To be honest I am nothing like them. And I think that was the challenging part of playing a character out of my comfort zone. I have played many roles in my life, many characters that I have related to much more than this. But having said this for an actor to do any film, he must reflect something of his own personality… that’s when you make the character relatable. But with Balli and Shamshera, there was a lot of creation. Between the director and myself, and a lot of other crew members and the cast to put this Whiletogether.”thefilm pushed the lead actors out of their comfort zones, it was no different for the director too, who had to unlearn a lot of processes of filmmaking to transform the 21st century to the 18th century. Karan says, “When we’ve been conditioned to make films in a certain manner, I have been an AD (Assistant Director) for over 10 years, so we’ve learnt in a certain manner. But what happens is that when we’re making a period film, we have to unlearn and let go of a lot of old baggage and a bit of education, so you can fly high with the technology and not make it your weakness. Because normally when something new is throw at a filmmaker, the first instinct of a creative mind is to get a bit wary of it. Because it’s kind of out of your comfort zone, but you know Shamshera taught me to embrace technology rather than kind of get scared of it. Once we did it, we were able to create the visual spectacle.” But was the five year wait for the film to come to fruition post-pandemic frustrating? “Well, we got extra time to work on VFX,” says Karan. Ranbir adds, “When it comes to the actual release, I have come to that stage in life where I am not very excited about the release because that’s truly the judgement time and that kind of scares me. But to be honest that’s what we are working for, to show the film to the audience. We worked really hard on this film, with a lot of love, patience, literally blood, sweat and tears.”

Yes, we spared no expense on the videos of that album. We got the best team, we flew them down from the US and they are all names who’ve worked in Hollywood and it was great to kind of take that to the next level. Like we did with ‘Ilzam’. There is no video that’s made like this. Some of the top artistes here have been calling and asking me how I made this, and a lot of them are now chasing the director of the music video.
THERE ARE ALSO SOME VERY INTERESTING COLLABORATIONS IN THE ALBUM… And it’s not even the half of it… So the album is releasing in two parts. The first part is already out now that has seven songs and the second part is now lined up that should be out end of the year. And those are very interesting collaborations. The first part was more in my space and I was working with artistes I already know like KING and Rashmeet Kaur, I collaborated for the first time, but I’ve known her for a while and generally I felt like being in my space. But Part 2 is very outside my comfort zone, it’s a very different space that I’m not used to making music in and I’m excited, that will be interesting.

The year couldn’t have been more special for Arjun Kanungo. While professionally he’s thrilled to have released his debut album – the singles of which are already proving to be chartbusters –personally too there’s much to celebrate as the acclaimed artiste-producer-actor marries his fiancé Carla Dennis on August 10th. I caught up with Arjun ahead of the wedding and in a candid chat we talk about his big day and the success of his debut album ‘Industry’. Arjun’s clearly in a league of his own and in this exclusive interview we also find out what sets him apart from the other artistes. Excerpts Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

BUT WHY THE LONG WAIT TO RELEASE THIS DEBUT ALBUM? I think that this was the right time. When I started writing the album, I thought that I would release it by the end of 2021. It was actually to happen in 2020, but then the pandemic happened, so it didn’t make sense to release it then. I had released a few singles, but obviously I couldn’t shoot or release any video, so it made sense to wait until the pandemic got over. I also wanted to plan a city tour and visit and perform LIVE for the fans.
CONGRATULATIONS… THE YEAR IS TURNING OUT TO BE RATHER SPECIAL FOR YOU PROFESSIONALLY AND EVEN MORE SO PERSONALLY? Yes, absolutely. It’s the best year so far, so thank you. I’m very excited as it is quite a big thing for me to be married and obviously it’s one of those oncein-a-lifetime kind of things. My fiancée and I have been together for two years now, and it’s been a long time coming to get married as the pandemic had kind of postponed that. And then of course there’s my recently released debut album ‘Industry’. I have been in the pop music business for almost seven years now and I’ve learnt a lot and tried to put everything I’ve learnt into this album. So, yes there’s a lot happening, it’s exciting. THE SINGLES OF THE ALBUM ARE ALREADY BREAKING RECORDS… Yes, ‘Ilzam’ is doing phenomenally well and overall too, the songs are close to over 80 million views and counting.
YOU HAVE BEEN IN BOTH - THE INDIE AND THE BOLLYWOOD MUSIC SPACE. WHAT’S MORE LIKE YOUR SCENE? Indie music definitely. I’m not really a film musician as such and I have not even put my efforts into being one and I don’t see that happening either. Maybe I’ve not been too interested or maybe I am lazy, but I love the pop space and I have always told people
UNCONVENTIONAL… What appears as unconventional to you is the normal for me. It’s the way I am. So for me it’s not unconventional. It’s the only way to be. People don’t associate that space with success, although now they are opening their eyes to that space. But I do know that it will be some time before people accept me in that space. I’ve to spend a lot of time convincing people that I’m good at what I want to do even though I shouldn’t have to do that. So I’m going to have that same struggle. Like I tried being in the Salman Khan way and I tried doing it. And it was a great learning too, but now I want to do it the way I believe in. So, later this year there’s a film in that space with me as the solo lead too.
AS A MUSIC PRODUCER ARE YOU LOOKING AT ENCOURAGING MORE INDIE ARTISTES? My label’s called One Mind Music and we have signed several artistes. The idea is to take these grassroots artistes who have talent but no direction. So the idea is to educate them and help them understand the eco-system of the industry. The music label business is very complicated. So as an artiste myself I understand that and their fears too, I give them a platform to build their own brand, but also educate them about how it works. So my label is about them, it’s not a brand, it’s a platform.
DO YOU THINK THAT THE PANDEMIC PERIOD BOOSTED THE INDIE SCENE SINCE THE FOCUS MOVED TO MUSIC VIDEOS AND SINGLES? In India, Bollywood is so huge that they create more content and because they create more content, they take up more shelfspace in a music market. But the fact is that half of Bollywood songs that are popular today are just remakes of old songs done in the 90s and the 2000s. You look at ‘Kala Chashma’ or a ‘Bom Diggy’, these were all nonfilm songs that were recreated for films. So, I would say there is a misconception about the non-film music. It’s always been there, but yes, it’s just that the volume of non-film songs has increased and now its more profitable. It’s a very academic question, but yes the pandemic in a way did accelerate the nonfilm music. So, it was always growing but its growing faster now.
I’m very excited as it is quite a big thing for me to be married and obviously it’s one of those once-ina-lifetime kind of things. My fiancée and I have been together for two years now, and it’s been a long time coming to get married...
I think there were a few songs over the years. What happens is that every artiste has these different moments in his life where they get breaks and then another big break. One thing I have learnt in the pandemic is that things can just change overnight. Just because you are famous for one song Bollywood or not, doesn’t mean you will always be. You have to keep building that career and we as artistes can see that the career spans over 30 years not just 3 years. Like ‘Baaki baatein peene baad’ was my debut and it put me out there. But for me ‘Fursat’ was an equally big song because that’s when people got to know the real me more. Then I had two big hits in 2018. ‘La la la’ and ‘Aaya na tu’. Both were massive hits like these two had a completely different listener base. One worked big time in the Punjabi music scene which is a big industry in itself. So that was a big thing for me. Then I had a lot of hit songs which were not hit videos essentially like ‘Woh baarishein’ and then ‘Fursat hai aaj bhi’… So all these songs solidified my place. Your chance of being a mainstream artiste increases with each song, ‘Ilzam’ really changed it for me. Its doing a million views daily. So I mean being a debut album that one song working for me is really amazing. That’s very exciting.
WHAT WAS THE GAME-CHANGER FOR YOU?
YOU MADE YOUR BOLLYWOOD DEBUT LAST YEAR WITH RADHE… WHAT’S NEXT ON THE ACTING FRONT? There’s a lot happening there. I realise that I’m very Indie when it comes to being an actor too. So, although I’m acting in Bollywood, I don’t see myself as a typical Bollywood hero. I would want to be in the space of Ayushmann Khurrana when it comes to the kind of films I’d like to act in… Not attached to the biggest of films but attached to the best of content. That’s pretty much what I also want to do.

from day one like in 2015 when I started that I knew that pop music in India will one day be bigger than Bollywood in the music space. Because I think as any country kind of evolves in terms of their culture, they start looking for artistes. It’s not just about one song anymore and that’s the trend worldwide. Only in India we have music that’s coming from Bollywood and it’s unique that our music industry is based on our film industry. But the fact that there’s so much proof worldwide that pop artistes become mainstream artistes, makes me believe that it will happen in India as well and I have always chased that dream. So that’s where my comfort is, that’s where my dreams are. I’m not looking to be a big Bollywood musician. I like to be featured in my own videos, I like to write my own songs, my own music. I like to make music for music and not have it as a backdrop for something else. I think music is big enough and profitable enough.

AS A CREATIVE PERSON, WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM? It’s a good question… I think it’s a personality type! I’m just naturally excitable and everything inspires me. Every artiste… small or big is inspiring. The motivation has to be real. Like if the song work because of the marketing, then that doesn’t work for me. Every day to do something new to create something is exciting for me, so that keeps me going.

Most actors are mostly full of themselves, but he’s always generous in his praise of fellow actors and directors. Family is the most important thing for him. He’d rather gift them quality time than shower them with baubles. As an actor, he believes in taking risks, and most of those risks have paid off. Whether it was playing a cad in LSD, a concerned journalist in Aligarh or a gay cop in his most recent release, Badhaai Do, he has completely immersed himself in his character. In this emotional chat, he reveals how important it is for actors, who lead insecure lives, to have a steady support system. He’s thankful to have found it at different phases of his life and is grateful to the universe for that.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE SHE HAS GIVEN YOU? The first thing she said was to be honest in my profession, to work hard and be kind to others. My mother was a real fighter, which is why I have this immense respect for women all over the world. IT MUST HAVE BEEN HARD FOR YOU TO COME TO TERMS WITH YOUR MOTHER’S PASSING? I haven’t yet come out of it. Life goes on, and Patralekha is always there. She’s the biggest support in my life and has made me a stronger and better person. When mom passed away in 2016, I was shooting for Newton in a small town in Chhattisgarh. I remember I had given my shot when I saw this guy running towards me, and I was wondering why he was coming into the frame. He came and gave me the phone, and Patralekha broke the news. I tried to be very brave and
WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHO WOULD YOU TURN TO FOR ADVICE? My mother was always there. I remember I was in class XI and I liked this girl; she liked me, but she had a boyfriend who was in college. One day, he came with some 30 guys to bash me up. All I kept saying when they were hitting me was not to hit me in the face, as I wanted to become an actor. I was quite a braveheart. When my brothers came to know about the fight, they got their friends to beat them. I told my mom about the ongoing fights, and immediatelyshetook miss her every day. During my struggling days, I would call her every time I was disappointed or felt low. And I remember she always had one thing to say: “Great things are going to happen to you, just hold on. Don’t worry.” Even after my National Award, Filmfare Award or any good thing that happened in my life, she kept saying that me to that boy’s house. Within fifteen minutes, we were friends, and he even said to let him know when my film is released. That was my mom. She’s no more, and I

AND HOW DID YOU ALL HOLD IT TOGETHER? I didn’t have an easy childhood. I became a dance teacher when I was in class eight. I started giving home tuition to one kid, teaching her whatever I knew. I used to feel so happy with the 300 rupees I got as tuition fees every month. I used to get ghar ka saman like ghee for 50 rupees and dal for 25 rupees. I felt proud that I was contributing to the daily needs of my family. They were tough but great times. We are a joint family and really close, and that helps us hold together. I learnt so much from my family and my brothers (we are four brothers and two sisters).

I got to know that there was a girl called Patralekha who would be acting with me, and we both had to travel together to Pune. YOU MENTIONED YOU WERE VERY INSPIRED BY MANOJ BAJPAYEE AS AN ACTOR. SO WHAT WAS IT LIKE WHEN YOU FIRST MET HIM? When I was growing up, I watched a lot of Hindi films. On one hand, I was watching DDLJ and imitating Raj watchingthecharacter),(ShahMalhotraRukhKhan’sandonotherhand,Iwas Shool and trying to be Samar Pratap Singh (Manoj Bajpayee’s character). I met him for the first time when we were shooting for a film called Chittagong in 2010, right after LSD. I become a student whenever I meet a senior actor, so I started asking him questions about acting, his process, and films. He’s my senior and I have immense regard for him, but whenever we meet now it’s like two friends meeting, but I still maintain that respect and dignity. He’s very chilled out and I can talk to him about anything.
I BECAME A DANCE TEACHER WHEN I WAS IN CLASS EIGHT. I STARTED GIVING HOME TUITION TO ONE KID... I USED TO FEEL SO HAPPY WITH THE 300 RUPEES I GOT AS TUITION FEES EVERY MONTH those two years. So I really enjoyed that.
HAVE YOU EVER WATCHED ANY OF YOUR FILMS WITH YOUR PARENTS? WHAT WAS THEIR REACTION? I haven’t watched any films with them, but my brother told me when my first film, LSD, was released, he and my parents, along with some other family members, went to watch it. You know, I have this scene in the climax where I am almost naked. In fact, I had told my mother about this scene ahead of time, and she had said it was fine. But when that scene came, all 12 or 13 of them didn’t know what to say. Everyone was feeling awkward and was waiting for the moment to pass. YOU HAVE PLAYED SEVERAL COMPLEX CHARACTERS IN YOUR CAREER. DO THEY TAKE A TOLL ON YOU? Not all the films, but some, like Shahid, Trapped, Newton, Bose, had a huge impact on my life. Also, they teach you some things. I feel like I have become a better human being after playing these parts. And then I was working with such amazing filmmakers. But after the making, you have to come out of it and prepare for the next character.
HAS IT EVER HAPPENED THAT DURING YOUR STRUGGLING DAYS THEY SAID, “TUM ACTOR NAHI BAN SAKTE” (YOU’LL NEVER BECOME AN ACTOR) AND OTHER KINDS OF INSULTS? Nobody said, “Actor nahi ban sakoge.” In fact, people were helpful, and after an audition they would say “you are good” and things like “be at it, if not for this film, maybe something else.” But there were some who asked why I was trying for films and that it was not going to work out. I knew that it was going to be very tough for me. I told myself, “fine, since I’m here, I am going to enjoy the journey.” There was no looking back for me. n

That the dishes on the menu should be nothing, but the best and there’s just no compromise when it comes to the quality, flavours, taste, aroma, the freshness of ingredients and even the presentation. Any dish that you feel is not going to be the best it can be, then it should not be featured on the menu. Anything that does not live up to the mark or is average, or you are not a 100 per cent sure about, whether people will like it or not, then do not risk it. Every single dish is one that you should be confident about creating and recreating just as good consistently. At the end of the day, what you serve should enhance the total culinary experience and make the patrons keep coming back for more.

I feel that when a person eats, all senses should be indulged. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BE A CHEF? I was keen to pursue medicine and I also had a natural knack for fixing tools and machines around. I love doing that… But whenever I saw grandmom cooking, like simple foods, she would put a simple desi ghee ka tadka, and the house would come alive with the aromatic fragrance. She used the simplest of ingredients and still created wonders. The flavours I can still recall and they take me back to all my happy memories associated with my childhood. That fascinated me. Eventually I started cooking, first because it was a need to cook to not stay hungry and then developed into a passion for seeing happy faces when they enjoy your dishes.

Abhishek Bajaj was last seen in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui. He played the antagonist Sandy, who happens to be a fitness athlete. Abhishek has got a good physique and he amped up his bodybuilding routine to look the part. In fact he even got injured and got 16 stitches and yet kept on shooting despite that. He adds that he had no qualms about playing a negative character. “Sandy wasn’t evil but arrogant. He thought he was the best and lost in the end because of his arrogance. It was a physically challenging role as I had to look the part but there were layers to it as well,” he explains.Hehad a good time shooting the film with his ‘brother’ Ayushmaan Khurrana. They bonded over workouts, Punjabi food and music. He says he’s

Analita Seth chats with newcomer Abhishek Bajaj, who was last seen as the antagonist in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui been bowled over by Ayushmaan’s professionalism. “He had to bulk up for Chandigarh… and was totally committed to it. I love the fact that he follows a vision and has been signing films in accordance with that vision. It was a learning experience working with him,” he gushes. He bonded well with Vaani Kapoor as well and praises her bold choice of playing a trans woman in the film. He thinks casting her and not an actual trans actor worked in the film’s favour. “Vaani has a bigger reach, and because of that people loved watching the film. And if it doesn’t reach a lot of people then there’s no use. She has a higher face value and she is a great actor. Casting a person who is unfamiliar to the audiences or not known to all would have not helped in making this unique love story accessible to a wider audience.”Delhi-based Abhishek started off as a model and moved to Mumbai after college. He continued his foray into the adworld and entered into acting by chance. “I came to know through Facebook that there’s an audition going on in Viacom 18, and I was selected in my first audition itself. I heard that it takes years for people to know how the industry works. I ended up doing 18 TVC’s and then I bagged my first TV show Parvarrish during my first year in Mumbai, so I got lucky, I guess,” he adds. The popularity of Parvarrish led to shows like Kuchh Khattee Kuchh Meethi and Dil De Ke Dekho and then he debuted with Student of the Year 2 (2019). He had to go through four rounds of auditions before getting selected. Being a Dharma film, he knew he was walking into a huge setup and vowed to give his 100 per cent to the project. That’s the reason why he kept shooting despite being injured during the film’s climax. “I got injured a couple of times (shoulder injury, ligament tear) and still I shot for the Kabbadi climax. I knew I couldn’t let the team down during the crucial segments and learnt to balance myself despite being in pain.”
Having worked in both TV and film, the major difference Abhishek finds between the two mediums is the pace. “In TV an actor barely gets time to prepare for a scene as everyone is running on a deadline whereas in films actors get an ample amount of time to prepare and to get in the skin of the character. This was one of the major reasons why I decided to make the switch from TV to film,” he reveals. He has also been part of the OTT series Your Honour and is open to more OTT projects. He feels OTT gives even more scope to the actors to showcase what they’re capable of.After playing a raw, negative character in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, he’s all set to showcase his sophisticated, sensitive side in Babli Bouncer.
