The Change Makers

I

t is the season of change. And as Dubai welcomes events with social distancing and Covid protocols in place, the Filmfare ME team is gearing up for the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night, our annual gala event scheduled for October 2021. Last year, the same event had to be postponed due to the pandemic and this year, we are planning to make it bigger and better! Over the next few days, keep a close watch on our social media pages for dough on the event that will felicitate achievers across spectrums with a sharp focus on Covid warriors, philanthropists and the army that helped quell the pandemic crisis in the UAE. With that thought, as we celebrate the change we see in content today, who better to talk about change than our cover girl Kriti Sanon. Her recent film Mimi saw her play a surrogate mother from a small town in Rajashtan. The engineer turned actor, has played several small-town girl roles in her films and has garnered praise for it – be it Heropanti, her debut film for which she won the Filmfare award, Bareilly ki Barfi, Lukka Chuppi and so on. The spunky, sassy Sanon loves poetry, is keen to push the envelope with progressive cinema bit by bit. She has the highest regard for the army of script writers, directors, male and female as well as film-makers and actors heralding this change. Our local pages in this edition are dedicated to the people from the UAE who have a deep connection to Bollywood. This includes the business magnate and Co-Chairman of the Galadari Brothers, Suhail Galadari, business tycoon and film producer Rajan K Lall, businessman and Bollywood promoter Bu Abdullah and artiste and businessman Jai Shankar. The latter in fact has been mentored by the late Dilip Kumar (Yusuf Saab) who got him to Dubai following an interesting episode. Read the interview to know more about him, as we deeply mourn the loss of Indian cinema’s biggest and most emulated name, Dilip Kumar. The veteran actor, who was ailing for quite a while, died at the age of 93 years. A close friend of the showman of Indian cinema Raj Kapoor and the suave Dev Anand, with the passing away of Dilip Saab, we bid goodbye to an era of insurmountable talent, old world charm, sophistication, grace, innate goodness and generosity. Pranutan Bahl, Mohnish Bahl’s daughter and legendary actor Nutan’s grand-daughter spoke to us about her next film ’Helmet’ with Aparshakti Khurana. Also check out a story on the most quote-worthy stars and the wisdom they share. In lieu of Dubai preparing to host the Dubai Expo, check out my interview with Shekhar Kapoor, who is one of the consultants of the Dubai Expo, who, along with music maestro A R Rahman aims to create a show of magic and splendor at the venue embodying the relentless spirit of Dubai and the UAE. As we move to an era of events helmed by the Ustad Raahat Fateh Ali Khan concert recently, here is wishing the August birthday boys and girls - Kajol Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sara Ali Khan, Randeep Hooda, Genelia D Souza, Maniesh Paul, Mrunal Thakur and Tapsee Pannu a very happy birthday! Stay safe and keep healthy!

EMI GALA AWARDS - A STAR-STUDDED EVENING

Coming soon!

ubai is getting back in the groove! Social calendars are cramming with events, airport looks are back in trend, and party-hoppers can’t wait to start schmoozing again...

Filmfare ME has an even bigger news! It brings to you a night to remember full of entertainment, entertainment and entertainment. The region’s biggest star-studded and entertainment-packed event hosted in Dubai. We are so excited to announce our Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night 2021! Yes, this most-awaited red carpet event that will be graced by the biggest names in cinema and entertainment – from Bollywood to Pakistan to the Arab world - is set to rock the Middle East soon. Follow our social media platforms and keep your eyes glued for the details. Talking about social outings, can fashion be far behind? There’s so much written about the fashionista uber-chicas and their favoured haute-couture labels, but the one thing I have also come to admire about Dubai’s fashion scene are the men and their love for style and immaculate grooming. These guys do have their finger on the fashion pulse and in the pages ahead we present to you the styles they totally slay in with utter ease. Also going full throttle here are the preps for Expo 2020. The world is gearing up for this megaevent - where one gets an opportunity to explore 192 countries in one place - and the city is gearing to host visitors from across the globe. Meanwhile, the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 were off to a great start too. The games witnessed many firsts and new records being set. Of course, not seeing the usual cheering stadium crowds is something we’re sure the players and sportspersons miss the most. But nevertheless, here’s wishing them all the best and hope they continue to make their countries proud. Back home in Bollyland, there’s a new buzz-word doing the rounds these days – Bio-bubble! Films are going on floors, shoots are resuming and ensuring safety are these bio-secure environments. Trust some of them to even flaunt this, but hey we aren’t complaining. Staying safe is all that matters, right?

So guys, stay safe, stay sassy! Aakanksha Naval-Shetye DEPUTY EDITOR

Designer dreams! Managing Director of Erkan, Kushal Bhatt talks to Aakanksha Naval-Shetye about his label, shares the brand’s vision and reveals what sets it apart WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR OWN BRAND? Indians living all over the world follow Bollywood celebs for fashion tips. So naturally every planned wedding includes a trip to Mumbai or Delhi, the hub of designers. You are spoilt for choice and the process is time consuming and exhaustive. To save families from this turmoil of travel and decision-making, ERKAN by Kushal Bhatt was launched. Our fashion directors forecast the upcoming trends and we create and bring the latest in fashion for you in Dubai itself. WHAT’S THE VISION AHEAD FOR THE BRAND? We are collaborating with various talents. Our latest collection is by photographer-turned-designer Vickky Idnaani. What sets this collection apart is the sharp trained eye that a man from behind the lens can create and something that the camera will love. The three collections that he has made for us are unique in design and also different from each other. WHO’S YOUR MUSE? IF THERE WAS ONE NAME YOU COULD DRESS UP, WHO WOULD IT BE? Currently it’s my family… My father Chetan Bhatt, my brothers Mahesh, Paarth and Adidev. In fact, we’re even doing a shoot with my dad soon! Also we have done a shoot with Yasir Khan, TYB who is my fitness and life-style guru. However the one name we aspire Ajrak design on Erkan’s Makhmal collection

to see sporting our label someday would be Ryan Gosling... Wouldn’t he look great in a kurta! As for Bollywood, we’d love to dress up Meezaan Jaffrey. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR CURRENT COLLECTIONS We have quite a few collections right now. One of them is very understated and elegant in pastels. Then there’s another one called ‘Makhmal’ (velvet) - rich in Indian textile, colour and heritage. We have also done a line of cotton kurtas with hoodies. You can wear them to a mehendi, a brunch or even for a house-party in the evening!

(L-R) Richa Idnaani, Kushal Bhatt and Vickky Idnaani

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPANSION PLANS? We at Erkan want to start a fashion consultation too for the grooms, as well as for the men from both sides of the families for the upcoming weddings. Starting from our outfits to grooming, accessories, make-up and hair, etc... Basically going the whole nine yards! August 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 7

AAMIR KHAN SAYS HE’LL BE HONOURED TO PLAY VISWANATHAN ANAND IN HIS BIOPIC

DILIP KUMAR PASSES AWAY Legendary actor Dilip Kumar, who was popularly known as the ‘tragedy king’, passed away on the morning of July 7. The actor was 98 and is survived by his wife, veteran actor Saira Banu. Doctors treating him said Dilip Kumar suffered from advanced prostate cancer that had spread to other organs of his body. “He had water in pleural cavity, and he suffered kidney failure. He required blood transfusion multiple times. We carried out the last transfusion but it did not help.” The actor was bedridden for several months and had become unresponsive in the last few days. With a career that spanned over five decades, he’s considered as one of the greatest actors that India has ever seen. Some of his best films include Devdas (1955), Naya Daur (1957), Madhumati (1958), Mughal-e-Azam, Gunga Jumna (1961), Ram Aur Shyam (1967), and Shakti (1982) to name a few. Our condolences are with the family.

Aamir Khan shared that he would be honoured to play the lead in the much anticipated biopic on the Indian chess prodigy Vishwanathan Anand, which is currently in the works and will be jointly produced by Aanand L Rai and Mahaveer Jain. Aamir and Vishwanathan Anand recently came together for an online event to play chess and raise funds for members of the chess community affected by COVID-19. Their exciting game and conversation traversed various topics that kept the audience glued. The conversation soon drifted to the upcoming biopic and Aamir was asked if he was interested in playing Anand in it, if offered. “Is that even a question?” the actor asked. “It would not only be an honour and pleasure to play Vishy but it would also be highly exciting to get into his mind. Whenever I am playing a character, I try to understand the person’s mind. With Vishy being a real person, I would spend a lot of time with him to understand his mind and how his mind works. I would also understand from his wife and his family how his mind works. And hopefully, I will surprise Vishy when I play him on screen. If and when that happens, I would look forward to that,” added Aamir. Fingers crossed.

HARSH VARRDHAN KAPOOR REVEALS KATRINA KAIF AND VICKY KAUSHAL ARE TOGETHER We’ve heard about Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal being in a relationship for the longest time but neither of them have ever confirmed the news. So we’ve let them be. Recently, however, Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor confirmed that the two are seeing each other. The Mirzya actor was on the Zoom show By Invite Only. He was asked to reveal one Bollywood relationship rumour that he believes is true. The actor quickly mentioned Vicky Kaushal’s and Katrina Kaif’s names. He even said he might land in trouble for this. He said, “Vicky and Katrina are together, that’s true.” He continued, “Am I going to get in trouble for saying this? I don’t know. I think they’re quite open about it.” Well, well… we believe Katrina Kaif and Harsh’s sister Sonam Kapoor are good friends. So there’s a possibility of Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor not getting into trouble over this. Meanwhile this news will surely make Katrina and Vicky fans happy and put the rumours to rest. In the past, Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal both have refused to comment about their relationship status. Vicky Kaushal had even said in an interview that this is his personal life and he would like to guard it. Katrina too has not been open about her relationship. We’re willing to wait for them to make it official. In the meanwhile, we’ll savour this piece of information.

expert advice SALMAN KHAN, FARHAN AKHTAR, AND ZOYA AKHTAR TO PRODUCE DOCUMENTARY ON SALIM-JAVED DR. SANA SAJAN Director of American Aesthetic Medical Center

DERMAL FILLERS V/S ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS MANY PATIENTS ARE STILL CONFUSED ABOUT VARIOUS TERMS LIKE INJECTABLES, ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS, DERMAL FILLERS, SKIN BOOSTERS AND COLLAGEN STIMULATORS. THE FOLLOWING IS A BRIEF OVERVIEW.

Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar are two of the most celebrated writers of the Hindi film industry. We hear that Javed Akhtar’s daughter, filmmaker Zoya Akhtar is working on a documentary on the life of Salim-Javed. She wants to pay a tribute to the duo through her documentary. Salim Khan has also confirmed that a documentary is in the making with Zoya working on it for the last two months. The documentary has been reportedly titled Angry Young Men. The term Angry Young Man has been long associated with Amitabh Bachchan after his portrayal of the angry cop, Vijay Khanna in Zanjeer (1973). The film, whose success turned Bachchan into a superstar, was written by Salim-Javed. It’s said the documentary will show how the two veteran writers changed the positioning of writers in Bollywood along with real-life footage from the past, some interviews with Salim-Javed’s peers. It will also focus on the fallout between the two giants. Angry Young Men will be produced by Salman Khan Films, Excel Entertainment, and Tiger Baby. This is the first time that Salman will collaborate with the Akhtars.

HOLLYWOOD STAR TOM HIDDLESTON PRAISES SHAH RUKH KHAN Shah Rukh Khan is truly a global icon. His fans are spread across the world and they include celebs as well. Recently in an interview with an entertainment portal, Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki in the Marvel films and who currently has his own series on Disney Plus, talked about Devdas (2002) and how he was mesmerised by the film. The Hollywood star said he was in awe of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film and said that though he’d seen it a long time ago, he still remembered the experience of watching it in a local cinema hall. He termed the film and the experience as extraordinary. He then played a word association game and took Shah Rukh Khan’s name when he was asked to associate a word to Bollywood. The Loki actor said, “Am I allowed to say Shah Rukh Khan again? “ SRK re-tweeted the video and showered the actor with love and said, “You are kind, God of Mischief… hope there’s no mischief behind this claim though. Lots of love Tom and can’t wait to binge Loki!!! Starting now- Ep 1.” We love this mutual admiration that has developed across the seven seas.

COSMETIC INJECTABLES

These fall into 3 main categories. -Anti-wrinkle injections restrict muscle movement. They smoothen lines by stopping excessive muscle movement. - Dermal fillers work by filling in and replacing lost volume in the skin that has occurred over time, enhancing features, or correcting asymmetry. Skin boosters or skin hydrators improve skin quality through superficial injections. - Collagen stimulators stimulate the body to produce more natural collagen.

ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS

The treatment is very safe and relatively simple but the key is having an experienced practitioner who can achieve natural looking results. A procedure repeated every 4-6 months.

DERMAL FILLERS

Not without potential side effects, this is a medical procedure that should be performed in a medical clinic environment. High movement areas around the mouth may need follow up in 6 months but areas like cheeks and tear troughs can have results for 1-2 years.

SKIN BOOSTERS

They are superficial and add hydration to the surface of the skin for a natural glow and radiance Also called ‘skin conditioning’ to distinguish it from dermal fillers. A popular procedure on the neck, décolletage, and the back of the hands.

DERMAL FILLERS

The product restores facial volume by activating fibroblast cells in the skin to produce new collagen. Unlike dermal fillers there is less chance of bruising or downtime and the results are gradual with improvements lasting around 2 years before a top up treatment is needed.

KRITI SANON TELLS US WHY SHE IS AAM JANATA IN HER CHOICE OF ROLES

12 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST August 2021

28/07/2021 7:21 PM

I first met Kriti Sanon when she came to Dubai for promoting Dilwale that featured her opposite Varun Dhawan in an SRK-Kajol movie. The four stars came to the FilmfareME 5 gala at Fort Island, Madinat Jumeirah, celebrating 5 years of Filmfare Middle East in 2015. Since then, the actor has scaled many heights in films such as Bareilly ki barfi, Houseful 4, Raabta and now plays a surrogate mother in the upcoming Mimi. In conversation with the tall and lissome actor who has an impressive line of films post Mimi. Read on. Manju Ramanan

Are you nervous of heading a near solo project like Mimi? It is a very special project and very close to my heart and yes, I am leading the film that has a lot of work put on it. I have been with Mimi for two and a half years and now, know her very well. The role is a once in a lifetime opportunity since it has a range of emotions right from anger, frustration, love, passion and more. It is a story of a girl who has a lot of dreams. She is the girl who is from a small town but is the best dancer there and aspires to be in films. She even talks to Ranveer Singh’s poster. She hates kids but becomes a surrogate and that changes her. It was a tough role to play. I am not nervous but excited and anxious yes because I am eager to know how

audiences will like it. It is my first OTT release. We completed shooting just before Covid hit. How has the lockdown been for you? Each and every one of us has gone through things and I feel that blessed for basic things like having my family around, food on my plate and everyone around me safe. I went through Covid too and have lived to tell the tale and feel blessed. You walked around with a 5 kg prosthesis belly. How was that experience? I walked around with 5 kgs of the belly and the 15 kilos I had put on for the role. So, it was 20 kgs over all. I have played small town girls before but we have so many flavors in India and after every few kilometers our lingo, food, habits change, the characters I have played, are different too. Mimi belongs to Mandawa in Rajasthan and is the best dancer there but something happens and she becomes a surrogate mother. I feel and look like a different person in the film. I wanted to look pregnant in close up shots too, so the weight gain helped. Unlike a lot of people, you struggle to put on weight? Yes, I do. I have always been skinny all my life and blessed with a metabolism that looks after me. I eat everything and used to flaunt that too but putting on 15 kilos was no joke. I was already eating unhealthy food, so that didn’t add to any kilos but my dietician put me on a diet where I ate thrice a day and completed each meal with a dessert. She also over fed me. I used to crave for khichdi and she would add three spoonsful of ghee to it before my meal. I wasn’t allowed to do any work outs. Even yoga wasn’t allowed. Eventually, not having 3 months of not working out, showed in my face and bodymy joints had started clicking and when I got up from the floor, my body started aching. To run with a total of 20 kgs on me was no joke either. I was wearing this corset with a bump that was suspended from my shoulders and I did end up with shoulder and back problems. Also, it was interesting how, when I slipped into the corset, I would automatically get tired and people would naturally offer me a seat to sit. I have more and renewed respect for pregnant women after this role. You are an engineer by degree. Were there instances in your film career where you had to dumb down? Certain characters and genres are not you. For instance, certain scenes in Houseful 4 weren’t just me. I don’t talk like that but the situation and genre is such that, you have to play that girl. It depends on the character sometimes. For instance, Mimi doesn’t know of surrogacy. Also, at times, there are some characters that are not very intelligently written. COVER STORY

You have stated that your choice of cinema is very Aaam janata? Yes, I choose the films that I enjoy watching. Watching films is a very personal thing and sometimes your choices can go wrong. What I mean by this is that, as an actor, you are supposed to know a lot on cinema that includes popular, parallel, art and intellectual cinema. I am a Bollywood film fan and started watching English movies only after moving to Mumbai. So, when I hear a script, I am the Bollywood janata listening to the script. Content is prime to me and I don’t like formula type commercials. What are your five favorite films? Andhadhun I loved, I liked Queen, loved Jab We met, 3 Idiots and absolutely loved Hum dil Chuke Sanam. As for Article 15, I liked that genre. I liked Ludo, it is quirky and Good Newzz. The onscreen women characters you have admired? Kangana Ranaut’s Queen of course has stayed with me. Geet of Jab We Met, is one of a kind – the era of the bubbly, spunky girl was heralded by Geet. I liked Kashibai’s charcter in Bajirao Mastani. As for Priyanka Chopra’s work, Fashion was amazing. I love when the characters are flawed and they are imperfect. Alia Bhatt’s characters in Udta Punjab and Gully Boy and so well written. You remember characters when they are unique. In 3 Idiots, Bebo’s character wasn’t long length wise but it was strong. Scripts are being female - led today and that is a happy change! And the best thing is that both men and women in the filmmaking space are contributing to that change. Ashutosh Gowarikar, for instance, makes all his women characters very strong. If you look at a testosterone heavy film like Panipat, you would wonder 14 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST August 2021

12-17-FFME- AUG 2021-COVER STORY KIRTI .indd 14

28/07/2021 7:21 PM

if there is a girl in it. But there is and he made my character so strong. He writes the characters that way because he himself is of that mindset. His wife is a big personality and has had a strong influence on him. Ashwini Iyer Tiwari who wrote Bareilly ki Barfi made my character Bitti liberal and out of the box, though she is from a small town. She had the target to marry someone which is traditional but she asks him if he is a virgin when he asks her the same question. Laxman sir tells me that he doesn’t want to see me in roles that aren’t worth my time and often says aapo aise hi role karne chahiye. I like roles where the character has flaws, spunk and she is real. Only then, they connect to the audience. When the name of the female lead is the name of the film, it is a good feeling. When we make such films and they start working with audiences, more film makers will put money on them. And then female actors will start refusing film roles that don’t talk to them. In the world of social media, are you burdened with the responsibility of a role? Films depicts reality and if you are showing a character from a small town who hasn’t opened up or is liberal, it is because the character is like that. She might be strong headed but not exposed to life and if there is something the film gives to her and she transforms, that is interesting to see and enact. You are poetically inclined. What is that the music that you loved the most. Rihaayee is so beautiful and so is Yaani Yaani and the other songs. I am a lyrics person and started writing poetry in high school and college. But I write on and off and when I came to Mumbai, lost touch with poetry since I used acting to express myself. But the current lockdown helped me. I wrote something to the character of Mimi recently in Hindi and English. Here is the English version.

My leap of faith: My Mimi Sometimes you have to stop climbing but by bit Stop fluttering your wings Just jump off that cliff You’ll be scared Unsure of your strengths Almost petrified But when flying is the only option you have my Mimi You will learn how to fly August 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 15

COVER STORY

What are your future film roles that have pushed the envelope? After Mimi, I have Hum D Humare do, with Rajkummar Rao, Ratna Pathak Shah – that is a film about adopting parents. It is a film on bonding and will bind any family together. Then, Bachhan Pandey with Akshay sir, has a unique plot and I play an assistant director who wants to be director. It is a complete package with twists and turns, action, comedy and romance. Then, there is Bhediya with Varun Dhawan that is my first horror comedy. The script is very funny and interesting and I have never looked like that before – wait and watch. Also, Varun is a friend offscreen too and there is a lot of fun chemistry between us. The director Amar who had made films such as Bala and Stree is great to work with. In Adipurush I am shooting with Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan. I have completed one schedule and it is a different kind of experience since, it is a larger-than-life film. You have to imagine things around you, like a waterfall, etc. The role comes with a lot of responsibility and Om Rawat is amazing at what he does. His technical knowledge is outstanding and his vision stays rooted to the ground and the values we have but it shows it in an interesting and unique manner. After that I have Ganpath with Tiger Shroff. He and I are working together after 7 years and I am so looking forward to the film. I’ll also be doing the action in the film and have just started prepping. I have a tall body frame and in action it is useful. I am excited about that film. It starts somewhere in October. You won the Filmfare award in 2015 for Best Debut? It has been a while. I want another one now! Everyone who becomes an actor covets the black lady. It was a dream come true for me and the first thing I felt when I received it was, gosh this is heavy. One of the few moments you never forget in your life. 16 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST August 2021

We’ve seen neon on the runway, we’ve seen it in couture. Now, since casual is the new big thing, neon is sliding into our wardrobes in the casual wear section too. It’s one of the most universal colours to stand out even in a simple outfit. While summers are for lighter shades, this bright colour seems to be a constant for fashionistas around B-town. A unisex trend, we’ve seen neon in active wear and summery ensembles. If you want to elevate your look, you can opt for a co-ordinated ensemble or simply pair with denims or a dull colour to balance out the hue.

… first t i id Di d The year 2020 will be known for the resurgence of comfort clothing. We’ve

spent so much time in baggy sweatshirts and yoga pants in the lockdown that materials like denims and velvet seem suffocating now. Couture has been temporarily replaced with a comfort-first wardrobe. With the rise of active wear and breathable dressing, the biker shorts have become a rage once again. When you look at this piece of clothing, you are instantly reminded of the image of Princess Diana, walking in a parking lot with a bag in one hand and her keys in another, pairing her biker shorts with an oversized sweatshirt. We’ve seen several recreations of this outfit over the years and now it’s more than just a rendition, it’s the year's most spotted trend. So if you’ve not tried it yet, please do it pronto. Move away from the dreams of princess gowns and opt for princess biker shorts instead.

FASHION

Fashionably forward! When it comes to fashion and style, Dubai Men certainly know how to put their best foot forward! Whether its haute couture or street-style, going all traditional or sporty, they do have their finger on the stylish pulse. And while it’s important to not let clothes overshadow your personality, here’s taking a page out of their style files and checking out 5 looks that you too can ace with ease!

1

Suit ‘em up! Nothing spells classy like a gentleman dressed in a smart tux. Team it with a stylish bow tie, slim fit pants, add that dash of glam with a pair of cufflinks, an elegant watch and the dapper you is ready to slay the evening like a star!

2

Stay street-smart! Perfect for that Dubai weather – throw on cotton shorts, half-sleeve linen shirt and a pair of loafers and you’re street ready in no time. Wayfarers only add to that style!

3

Play it safe, but go Hunky! You can just never go wrong with a classic white shirt or check shirt paired with a well-fitted pair of denims. Baggy style is a big NO though! Opt for boots to complete that hunky look. You can also try the denim shirt, white tee and jeans look with white keds or Samba style sneakers.

4

Go Sporty! Who says a sporty look is only for the gym! A well-fitted Tee, or a hoodie, tracks pants and sneakers do the trick on a casual outing. Throw in that cap to complete the look.

5

Biker’s club!

Summers may not be the ideal time for these, but it’s always a good idea to invest in a smart leather jacket. Ripped jeans, a bandana, aviators and some chunky accessories complete that look.

Award winning director Shekhar Kapur who is one of the consultants of the

Dubai Expo spoke to Manju Ramanan on his plans with AR Rahman on creating a spell-bounding spectacle at the Al Wasl Dome, Dubai Expo.

The well feted and veteran director of Masoom, Bandit Queen and Elizabeth fame shared a poignant post on his collaboration with musical genius AR Rahman who is an integral part of the dubai Expo. Rahman who met Filmfare ME last year was, at that time, scouting for talents for his all-women-orchestra that he was planning for the Dubai Expo. Shekhar Kapur shared this on his Instagram

When the amazing Al Wasl dome at the Dubai Expo was under construction, A R Rahman and I walked into it. Awed but challenged by its immensity. And we both knew what was in each other’s mind. So much was left unsaid but completely understood. “Could we,” I asked “It is a challenge,” replies AR Rahman.” No one has done it before.” “That’s why we should, shouldn’t we,” I said.

And no more words were needed. Rahman and I are going to put up a live musical show in this amazing space. In association with one of the best projections/live shows companies in the world ‘Artists in Motion.’. with credits like King Kong on Broadway… with 50 high density moving projectors point at the sky. With a story transcending the space between the earth and sky, Wisdom and Curiosity, timelessness and consciousness, is the musical story of Ship of Human Endeavor. A new collaboration between us. Would not have been possible without the constant encouragement and support from HE Reem Al Hashimy HE Reem Al-Hashimy is the UAE minister of State and managing director for the Dubai World Expo 2020 Bid Committee and Shekhar Kapur is all praise for her vision and leadership. “The world has gone through a tough time and HE Reem Al Hashimy has held her head high and I am super impressed by her leadership. The vision of Dubai will be achieved,” he says.

About his interaction with AR Rahman, he says, “When we walked into the Al Wasl dome, there was a moment of silence and we both understood what the other one was thinking. We wanted to create a celebration of music, dance, performances, projections on the dome with a theme that will travel across curiosity, wisdom, space, explorations and the cycle of thought. It is an explosion of expression, a breakthrough with international music, dance and a dramatic story of all that the Expo is aspiring to achieve.” Ask him if there will be a hint of Bollywood in the celebrations and he says no. “It is time for the world to understand that India is not Bollywood. That would be restrictive. If the UAE and India can send the space-craft to Mars, why should Bollywood be part of the picture?” Shekhar Kapur is also working on a feature film on Baba Zayed or HH Sheikh Zayed, the founding father of the UAE. “While the world looks upon HH Sheikh Zayed as a leader, he is a huge spiritual force of the UAE like Mahatma Gandhi. We all look upon him spiritually,” he says. August 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 33

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DEBUT FILM NOTEBOOK AND THE MEMORIES ASSOCIATED? WERE YOU NERVOUS AT THE FIRST SHOT? I have some beautiful memories of my debut film Notebook shot in Kashmir in 2019 opposite Zaheer Iqbal. I was very nervous in the beginning but my director guided me, so I eased out later. I have wonderful memories of Srinagar and its people – they are all warm and hospitable. WAS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO ALWAYS? Always. I have literally grown up on film sets. Be it Mehboob Studios, Filmalaya, Kamalistan etc. In fact, I used to joke that all my extra-curricular activities were in film studios. I learnt to cycle at Kamalistan studios for instance. YOU COME FROM A FAMILY OF ACTORS, WHAT DID YOU LEARN AND PICK UP FROM THEM? As a child you pick up so many things from your parents. I have learnt some great qualities from them – how to be disciplined, be amiable and most of all to be good to work with, because, your energy speaks so much about you and that is so important. I am a daddy’s girl. My dad has taught me to always live with integrity and he has taught me that by example. HOW HAS THE LOCKDOWN BEEN FOR YOU? DID YOU LEARN ANY NEW SKILLS? We did get a lot of time with family which we don’t otherwise. I feel a lot of gratitude towards the universe because I was working throughout the lockdown. As for new skills, I bettered my cooking skills. You can say that I have a little more knowledge about cooking now. WHAT ARE YOUR GRAND-MOTHER NUTAN JEE’S FILMS YOU HAVE LOVED AND ADMIRED THE MOST? My favourite film of my dadi is Bandini and I am a huge fan of Bimal da (Bimal Roy). What Bimal Da and my grand mom created in Bandini is just genius and even in Sujata, she is so good. Every film of her is inspirational to me. Be it Mai Tulsi tere aangan ki, Saudagar, Seema – all of them are beautiful stories. Dadi is legendary and all her roles are inspiring. WITH SUCH STRONG WOMEN IN THE FAMILY, HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF CHOOSE YOUR FILM ROLES? We are blessed with strong women in the family. (Kajol is Pranutan’s aunt and her father’s first cousin. Her grand aunt and Kajol’s mom, is the legendary actor Tanuja. Pranutan’s mom Ekta has been an actor too) These strong women have been path breakers in their career and as personalities in themselves. All that influences you as a young girl. Whatever choices I make, I believe they are good and that they are right for me, my career and my life. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY’S ASSOCIATION WITH SALMAN KHAN. Salman sir and my dad were friends even before they appeared in films. We have had a long and warm association with him and his family. He is a very simple, down-to-earth person despite the global superstar he is. He is never afraid and shy to ask for work. He tells us that I ask for work from x, y and z, for someone else, there is no shame in asking for work. And I absolutely love that. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE KAJOL MOVIE AND WHY? I simply love Kajol bua’s Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ). I think it is a fantastic film and she is brilliant in it. I love the way she portrayed the memorable character of Simran – it is a classic role.

WITH A FAMILY OF ACTORS, DO DINING ROOM DISCUSSIONS, END UP ABOUT CINEMA? Not at all. None of our dining room conversations are about movies. It is about daily stuff. It is usually about how was our day, how was school and homework. When I was a child, both my parents who are actors, never spoke of movies at all. We had real and regular conversations. YOU ARE NAMED AFTER YOUR GRANDMOTHER. HOW SIMILAR ARE YOU TO HER? Unfortunately, she passed away before I was born. I really don’t know. People who have known here and have known me, can answer that. TELL US ABOUT YOUR RECENT MUSIC VIDEO? DO YOU SING TOO? I had a wonderful time shooting for my music video in Chandigarh. I have trained in music very briefly, about 3-4 months in classical music but I cannot sing. My sister Krishaa sings very well and even plays the key board. She is musically inclined. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PROJECTS? Helmet is coming up. It is releasing super soon It is produced by Dino Morea sir and Sony Pictures and it has Aparshakti Khurana in it. It is a funny and quirky film with a social message. I have signed another film too, that I am very excited about but I am not allowed to disclose anything about it. There must be a story within the director that wants to come out. That’s the reason why Dil Chahta Hai, Lagaan, and Rang De Basanti worked so well: Ashutosh, Farhan, and Rakesh had a story inside them. It’s very important that the director should have the fire in the belly to tell the story.

The Newsmaker!

As the Co-chairman of Galadari Brothers, Suhail Galadari is renowned for his business acumen and entrepreneurial vision. Leading his well-diversified group in various industries of Media, Printing, Heavy Construction Equipment, Automotive, Hospitality, Food & Beverage, Engineering, Industrial Trading and Travel & Tourism, the Brands portfolio of Galadari Brothers include Khaleej Times Daily English Newspaper, Komatsu, JCB, Mazda, Baskin Robbins, among others. And while the business magnate has come to be respected for his enterprising spirit, his love for cinema is equally well-known. Schmoozing with the stars, hobnobbing with the who’s who of the movie industry and Bollywood biggies is nothing new for Suhail Galadari. In an exclusive interview, the Emirati Business Tycoon and Media Mogul talks to Aakanksha NavalShetye about this love and passion for Bollywood. The head honcho also shares his vision ahead, talks about overcoming the challenges in the post-pandemic phase, and reveals his rules of success

AS ONE OF THE MARKET LEADERS, WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE THIS PAST YEAR DURING THE PANDEMIC? One of the bigger challenges has been the unexpected reduction of investments made into the market which has affected both the bottom lines and top lines in most businesses. However, we have remodeled and reshaped many of our businesses to adapt to the changing circumstances and I am happy to say that we have found most of our business lines back in good shape. WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE WORK OPPORTUNITIES THAT DUBAI

OFFERS? Dubai has always been a land of opportunities and given the positive long-term vision of our Rulers, Dubai will continue to be the most sought-out destination for talented resources from all over the world. With changing times Dubai has redefined its USP and therefore stays relevant in a present and futuristic context when it comes to job creation. The emphasis laid in the past on the creation of icons like Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City, Dubai Healthcare City, Dubai Design District and several other such initiatives have reaped rich results in creating quality jobs for youth across the globe.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION AHEAD? With the help of my family and the senior management at Galadari Brothers we would like to grow our businesses in line with the future growth of our country. Our endeavor is to create one of the best run companies in the private sector. Our company should be recognized by our partners and employees on the basis of best practices and ethos of integrity and professionalism. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A LEADER? Very transparent, I do lay emphasis on sharing lots of enthusiasm and encouragement with my team, I treat them with regard and respect for their professionalism. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN THAT WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE BALANCE? It is extremely important for me to maintain a strict work life balance. Once I am out of the office my focus is centered around my family and some close friends. I have been blessed to have very good friends with whom I spend quality time. WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU MOST LOVE ABOUT BEING YOU? The fact that I am very uncomplicated! What you see is what you get. I am by nature upfront and honest. BESIDES WORK, WHAT ARE THE OTHER PASSIONS YOU PURSUE? I love the ocean and I need very little encouragement to jump on to my Yacht and go off sailing into the Arabian Gulf. ARE YOU A MOVIE BUFF? Very much so! CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR LOVE AND PASSION FOR BOLLYWOOD? Bollywood and UAE have a deep-rooted relationship and since an early age I was exposed to Bollywood movies and Pakistani drama. I have always appreciated the art and cultural elements in movies and dramas. Both are culturally entwined with our own lifestyle so really movies have been a natural extension of entertainment and learning for me. THERE’S A STRONG CONNECT YOU SEEM TO SHARE WITH THEM? After I saw my first LIVE shooting of a movie as a kid I realized that movie making was really a very tough business. Attention to every detail was so important and couple this with high quality directional skills made me appreciate cinema from a very serious viewpoint rather than just the flash elements of cinema making. I learnt to respect cinema. Years down the road I found similarities in the directing of a company and directing a good film. In a company you encourage your team members to keep trying harder to keep performing and helping them all the time. A good movie director does the same with his star cast! WHO AMONG THE STARS YOU’VE MET ARE YOUR FAVOURITES? I have so many dear friends in Bollywood and it will not be fair to talk about favourites, each one has a special ability and stands out in specific roles. Shah Rukh Khan may not be able to play a Dabangg role of Salman Khan and likewise Salman could not possibly better the Devdas role played by Shah Rukh! IF THERE WAS A MOVIE MADE ON YOUR LIFE, WHICH STAR WOULD YOU WANT TO PLAY YOU? I think either Salman or Akshay (Kumar)… WHAT ARE YOUR RULES FOR SUCCESS? Hard work, honesty and a determined focus are the usual common denominators if you are serious about attaining success. However, equally important is the constant dialogue one must have with your team, giving words of encouragement, sharing rewards, imbibing virtues of teamwork, getting everyone aligned and sharing a one page strategy towards the long term mission and vision of the organization. All these relevant factors lead the team towards success. If my team attains success then it means I have succeeded! Above all, remember that Success is an endless road… just keep working towards it. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BE AN ENTREPRENEUR? I became an entrepreneur to be successful in life and to earn respect from friends and family. All this motivated me to be a businessman. I always wanted to be the decision maker and what is better than being an entrepreneur where you are your own boss and can direct businesses as per your experience and expertise? On the other side, I love to help people from different nationalities and communities and hence, have always been a part of charity events. WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU OVERCAME OVER THE YEARS. In today’s market, there are many people trying to be the best in their work and to be part of the number game. I try hard to always maintain my position which only keeps getting higher and higher, by the grace of God. Also managing my 270 companies from different fields is a big task for me. It take it up as a challenge and I am successful in it.

A Heart of Gold His business portfolio spread across 270 companies, is diverse and encompasses several industries – be it legal firms, real estate companies, start-up assistance, companies in partnerships to charity and most interestingly, cinema and film stars. He has rubbed shoulders with the who’s who of Bollywood, been part of film productions and even walked the Cannes red carpet recently. A philanthropist, entrepreneur and a film buff, he greets us at one of his many offices in Ajman and speaks of his love towards Bollywood with the same zeal and enthusiasm as he speaks of his passion towards business entrepreneurship and working with all nationalities. Manju Ramanan catches up with the tolerant leader and man of many tastes, the versatile Bu Abdullah.

WHAT ARE THE 5 RULES OF A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN 1. Surround Yourself With the Best. I firmly believe that we become who we are surrounded with. If you surround yourself with the most inspiring mentors, positive team members and powerful information portals on a daily basis, you will succeed. 2. Remember, Life Is Short. Every time I take on a new project, I ask myself, at the end of the day, if I will be proud of my work. You need to be proud of what you do because life it too short to live in regrets. 3. Finish What You Start No matter what I’m working on, I make sure I complete it in the right way, shape, and form. Completing a project I have started, is an important task for me. 4. Always Be Transparent Being completely transparent with everyone you are in business with, is the key to establishing meaningful, long-term relationships. You need to have the courage to be open-minded and transparent, to receive the same amount of trust in business. 5. Never Stop Learning There is always more to learn, no matter what industry you are in. Knowledge comes from all quarters and be hungry to learn at all stages of your life. YOU HAVE MULTIPLE PROJECTS HOW DO YOU MANAGE ALL EFFICIENTLY ? “Yusuf Saab once visited the Tirupati shrine in 1983 with me,”

says Jai Shankar Iyer, Dubai based businessman MD, Project and Equipment Supplier Ltd FZE and artiste, who, the late Dilip saab personally flew to Dubai and settled for employment. The godson remembers the father- figure in his life and the legendary Hindi cinema thespian who passed away recently!

I

t all started when I was doing my Masters with Economics in Chennai, at Madras Christian College. My brother in law had a leather manufacturing firm and sent me to Singapore for looking after the office there. I chanced an opportunity with Singapore Television and became a known TV star singing Bollywood songs. That is when I met actor Krishnam Raju, (who is actor Prabhas’ uncle), and we became good friends. He offered me a job opportunity in Hyderabad in 1984 and I decided to give it a try. He was making the Hindi version of popular Telugu movie Bobbili Brahmanna, titled Dharmadhikari, with a multiple star cast that included Dilip Kumar, Jeetendra, Sridevi, Shakti Kapoor and assigned me the task of looking after Yusuf Saab (Dilip Kumar) since I could speak Hindi fluently. I went to the Rajahmundry railway station to receive him at 3:35 am and the train there stops exactly at one and a

half minutes. I used my clout with the station master and got him to get all 20 coolies to the station at that time. I’ll never forget the vision in white who stepped out of the train. Yusuf Saab in pure starched white, looking sleepy but immaculately dressed. Within less than two minutes the luggage was huddled into a van and I sat on the front seat of the ambassador with him and Saira jee at the back heading towards the producer’s bungalow where he was to stay. As I was leaving, he asked me where I was going and I told him I was going back to my hotel room. He insisted I move bag and baggage to the next room in the bungalow and stay with him through the shoot. That was the beginning of a beautiful mentorship and friendship with the legend. During the schedule of the shoot, I requested a few hours off from him since I wanted to visit the holy shrine of Tirupati. He, at once, asked me “Akele Jaoge?” (Will you go alone?) and came along with me. As we were driving, I narrated to him the story of the temple and its deity and we had to pass through a deer park enroute and he spotted a deer. When we reached the place, I was apprehensive because some Hindu shrines are particular about not allowing non-Hindus to enter the place. But as luck favoured us, the mayor of Maharashtra and later, President of India Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma was visiting the place and happened to be a big fan of Dilip Saab. So, we could enter the sanctum sanctorum and spend half an hour in front of the main deity. “For half an hour Dilip Saab stood in front of the Balaji idol with his eyes closed when the offering and puja was being made. We were looking at him praying fervently. He even signed on the guest register. Later on, he told me that when I was narrating

the story of the lord to him, he had decided that if he saw a deer in the sanctuary, he would believe me. And he had spotted a deer.” I am used to recite the Shiva tandava stotram (a hymn) daily and he used to watch me do it. In the film Dharmadhikari, there was a scene where he narrates the hymn and told the director of the film Shri Raghavendra that I would assist him in that scene. The whole unit watched us create the scene. That was his aura, his command over his craft. At another instance, Jeetendra challenged me to a bet. There was an early morning shoot the coming day and it required the entire star cast to be there at an outdoor location early in the morning. Yusuf saab would usually be on set by 11 am and Jeetendra challenged me that he would not be there. In our morning walk that very day at 5 am, I requested Dilip Saab if he could report to the shoot early that day and he agreed. Everyone in the unit was shocked. But that is what he did for me! The legend commanded respect wherever he went. Once we had a schedule in Mumbai and went to the Chola Sheraton to book a suite and were told that it was already booked by Rajesh Khanna. Then we went to the Taj and booked a suite next to where his dear friend Raj Kapoor was staying. We checked in and the manager called me to tell me that we had to move from there because Mr Amitabh Bachchan had already booked the place. When Amitabh got to know that Dilip saab was inconvenienced, he came personally and fell at his feet and asked him for forgiveness. That is the respect he commanded. Another great quality he had was to always pay his own bills, be it his trunk call bills or bills incurred on personal expenses. My life’s turning point however came when the legend agreed to come home for a meal of idlis and dosas. I was married by then and the time for lunch was set. What I didn’t know was that my employer was flying in to Chennai the very time for a lunch he had invited Yusuf saab for, at the Taj. “When Krishnam Raju called Dilip saab, he said he wouldn’t make it there because he was going to my house for a meal.” He came home and enjoyed a simple meal we made. Next day I met Krishnam Raju for a drink and he was triggered by a comment by one of his subordinates that Dilip Kumar had refused to come to the producer’s house but went to my home. He started abusing me stating that I was a mere emplouee and that Dilip Saab came to my house only because of him. I even when I kept pleading that I didn’t know or else I wouldn’t have allowed it. The argument went on to a crescendo and finally I told Mr Raju that I would like to be his friend not employee. I didn’t go to work the next day onwards. Yusuf Saab got to know what had happened because he kept calling the office for me and couldn’t reach me. That is when he asked me to send him my passport through FAX. Next morning, he called and told me to come to Mumbai and asked me if I would go to Dubai to work. I agreed. The plan was to meet his friend Gopal who was a successful businessman, who wanted to open an office in Dubai and Yusuf Saab had recommended my name. His friend would fly in from London to Dubai to meet me and him. He arranged for ticket to Mumbai, my visa and told me that I would be away from my family and spoke to my wife too. The beauty is that he came with me to Dubai, we stayed at the Hyatt. He had a suite, I had a room and the next morning I was to meet Gopal saab. I landed the job and my office was at the Ramada roundabout – with Salim Sharifi as my sponsor. That is why my journey in Dubai began. Years later, I started my own business and have continued living in this city. Dilip Saab and Saira jee used to visit us several time and stayed at home. They were very close to my children who were born later and since then has been part of my family. I couldn’t meet him for the last few years since he wasn’t well but the news of his death has shattered me and I am devastated. It seems like I have lost a parent. Photography :Gulam Murtaza

Memories in Celluloid

Business tycoon, film producer, music connoisseur, singe, aesthete, state level badminton champion and cricketer, Dubai based Rajan K Lall, the Founder, Chairman and MD of GTA Group of Companies, is a treasure trove of all things cinema. A meeting with him is a crash course on the cinema and the cinematic figures starting from the 1950s to today, well seen in the immaculately documented photos from his picture gallery. Raj Kapoor singing Teri Duniya Mai Dil Lagta Nahi in his drawing room, to casual dos with legends like Jagjit Singh, Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajnikanth and Kamalahaasan and more. orn in Karachi in the February of 1947, Rajan Lall is a child of the partition. The same year in August, his large family including his parents and uncles left Pakistan, came to Mumbai and set up base. His uncle JC Jain, one of the pioneers of the Filmfare magazine, who instituted the Filmfare awards had joined The Times of India as its General Manager. A

- Manju Ramanan man of great clout and influence, he was a king-maker and threw huge parties in his Malabar Hill home, attended by the who’s who of the Indian film industry. Lall, a favourite of his uncle, attended the first ever Filmfare awards at Shanmukhananda Hall as a child and though didn’t know that it was a historical event, was taken in by the glamour and razzmatazz. “My uncle had a huge bungalow in Malabar

Hill, et al with his white Chrysler, threw some of the biggest music parties in his home. Madhubala, Suraiya, Bina Rai, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and many such legendary names were casual visitors at these parties,” he says, as he leafs through one of the many black and white photo albums he possesses. All preserved and documented well by his mother, who he adores and admires. “My mother was a Chartered Accountant and my father, a businessman who worked in Insurance. What struck me about my mother, was that she was a real superwoman but wore it casually - she managed a home and socializing with great aplomb. She would serve my father his meal, leave for work, come back to serve him lunch and would return home before he came back from work, fully dressed to be ready to go out, if need be.” They had a fantastic social life and Lall, grew up in the midst of all this, soaking in the celebrities, the musical nights at home, the powerful names in the industry and so on.

The late actor Vinod Mehra and Lall went to college together and till date, his wife Kiran is good friends with him. The actor had once requested Lall to speak to his dad recommending him to film producers and he spoke to producer FC Mehra of Eagle Films who used to produce several Shammi Kapoor starrers. “Vinod had acted in a film with Tanuja then titled Ek Thi Rita and we arranged a screening for them in Worli. FC Mehra watched the film and left the theatre without a word and Vinod’s heart sank. He felt his career was over that the producer had left the screening without a word. The next day my dad spoke to him and he called Vinod over and offered him two films, Elaan and Lal Patthar. For one, he was given a cheque of Rs 50,000 and for the other one, he would be paid Rs 1 lakh. Vinod couldn’t

believe his eyes. When he hugged me with happiness, I asked him if he had a bank account at all and he said he would open it that very day. Such are my memories with him.” In a week’s time, he greeted him outside my home driving a white-green Impala and in one year he had bought a bungalow in Pali Hill. A charming human being who was good with everybody and was ever considerate to his producers. He did Southern films too. I miss him,” he adds. Lall is currently mentoring his son Rohan Mehra, who was seen in the Saif Ali Khan starrer Bazaar. “Singer Mahendra Kapoor was a bit on the heavier side and I had discovered a passion for singing. We struck a

deal – I would teach him badminton and he would teach me music. He was a good teacher and I even won the Sangeet Mandal Award in college. I still regret that I didn’t pursue music back then. But a whole lot of singers and musicians are my closest friends. Talat Aziz, Anup Jalota, Pankaj Udhas, Bhupinder, Mitali, Roop Kumar Rathod, Sonali and Jagjit Singh”. In fact, Jagjit has lived in his house and apart from getting him a hair-cut, helped build his career through his contacts. In the work front, Lall started his professional stint with Ciba and handled the publicity and advertising of Binaca Toothpaste and worked closely with the legendary Amin Sayani in the Binaca Geet Mala. He then joined Bayer, and eventually joined his dad’s friend VM Sabarwal who inducted him into the business of making collar interlining. Lall branched out on his own when his close friend Kiku Samtani gave him Rs 10,000 to start his own business.” I started ITL around that time in 1971 with Rs 500 in my bank and soon it became a huge brand name. Today Mainetti group, that he is part of, manufactures hangers and controls 80 percent of the market share.” Lall reminisces of the great camaraderie shared between his actor friends – Sanju (Sanjay Dutt), Mahesh Bhatt, Anil Kapoor, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Shafi Inamdar, Dalip Tahil, Marc Zuber, Dipti Naval who were all home for daily parties during the pre-release of Mahesh Bhatt’s Arth. Lall helped the maker Kujit Pal market and showcase the film. He narrates the story of Saaransh that Lall had decided to produce with Mahesh Bhatt as director. They decided to cast Haribhai (Sanjeev Kumar) in the role but Anupam Kher was aghast and threatened them saying he would die if we didn’t give him the role since he had prepared that hard. And the rest is history. Lall and the legendary Shatrughan Sinha continue to be thick friends for the last 40 years plus. He particularly idolizes the late Sunil Dutt, who has had a stellar influence in his life. “A friend, philosopher and guide, for the last 40 years, he changed my outlook towards life,” he says. Their core group consisting of Lall, Yash Johar and Gulshan Arora stayed with Sunil Dutt during Sanjay Dutt’s term in jail when all his friends had deserted him. Lall has always walked the path less trodden and looked for niche markets to explore. He dubbed and released Appu Raja in Mumbai when films such as Dil and Ghayal were creating noise. After the dubbing market of South films saturated, he moved on to dub Hollywood films into Hindi – True Lies, Jurrasic Park, James Bond movies to name a few. Rajan Lal moved to Dubai eventually and produced Mani Ratnam films such as Nayakan, Roja and Dalapathi. He also produced Chaaila, Love Birds, Nehru: The Jewel of India and a film called Indira directed by Suhasini Maniratnam. He is responsible for bringing AR Rahman to the Hindi film industry through Roja and even produced the animation of Ramayana in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Today at 74 years of age, he is unstoppable – with offices in Dubai, Jordan, Kenya, Ethiopia, S. Africa, where the group creates 17 million hangers for the US market, he has also branched out into creating car traction batteries for the Kandhari group here and controls plastic pail sales for the paints market in the Middle East. The grand show goes on… (More of Rajan Lall in his upcoming book. Watch this space for more updates) August 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 47

Garnering critical acclaim for his act in Haseen Dillruba, Vikrant Massey has scored yet another powerpacked performance to his name, taking the curve on his career graph to a new high. The role wasn’t an easy one, but then the actor seems to have mastered the art of capturing the subtleties and nuances of most layered and complex characters and portraying them on screen with utter ease. We have seen that acting brilliance in films like A Death in the Gunj and Chhapaak, amongst others and also in webseries like Mirzapur, Criminal Justice and Broken But Beautiful, where he’s made people sit back and acknowledge his acting skills. We catch up with the actor for an exclusive interview and in a candid chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, Vikrant talks about getting to live his childhood dream, his cinematic sensibilities and choice of roles, and also reveals why inspite of his increasing popularity, he prefers being a simple boy at heart. Excerpts: YOU ARE ONE OF THE MOST VERSATILE ACTORS OF THE CURRENT GENERATION… DOES THAT ADD PRESSURE WHEN YOU CONSIDER YOUR NEW ROLES? Not yet. I don’t want to overcomplicate life and I don’t want to sort of add any extra burden or baggage about these frills. I just want to keep it as simple as possible. If expectations are concomitant of good performances, than I’d rather concentrate on my good performance. Because if there are people who are expecting me to perform in a certain way then the only thing I must focus on and deliver to them is this performance. This is the process that I’ve been following all these years and I hope to continue doing the same. TAAPSEE (PANNU) IS THE BEAUTY, HARSHVARDHAN (RANE) IS THE BRAWNS AND YOU ARE THE BRAINS IN HASEEN DILLRUBA? TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS COMPLICATED CHARACTER YOU PLAY ON SCREEN… Yes, it is a layered character and that is one of the reasons why I ended doing the film because it provided an opportunity that I had never tapped into before. A lot of roles have come my way but they have been very simple… nothing as complex as my character in Haseen Dillruba. When I read the script, I kind of understood the world these characters came from and this was one of the most complex characters I had ever come across. You end up reading so many scripts day in day out and this one really stuck out for me. But I wouldn’t want to take all the credit for it. A lot of it should be shared with my co-actors, Taapsee being the most important one because most of my screen time is with her. She is very instrumental in what I have done. What you see on screen is a lot of reacting to her acting, so it’s a lot of team work. I accept all adulation and admiration coming my way with humility but I wouldn’t want to say that I’m the only reason for it. What you see on screen is a lot of give and take. YOU STARTED ACTING VERY EARLY. DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE AN ACTOR? Always. That was my dream and my biggest aspiration, even back in my school. By the time I was in my eight standard, I realized that this is something I want to do and I was guided into it by my teacher, principal, my parents, friends… they all kind of recognized this possibility in me and pursued me into it. YOU STARTED OFF ON TELEVISION BEFORE MAKING YOUR MARK IN THE MOVIES. WHICH ROLE WAS THE GAME-CHANGER FOR YOU ONCE YOU ENTERED BOLLYWOOD? I think it was A Death in the Gunj. It was Konkona’s (SenSharma) first film as a writer-director. It actually brought me out in a different light. Konkona believed in me and persisted and her faith in me is something I will always be grateful for. A lot of things in my life changed

because of that film. And I will always be indebted to Konkona and everyone associated with that film. AND ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE KIND OF ROLES COMING YOUR WAY? Absolutely. I wouldn’t ask for anything else. Even if I had an option to sort of rewind and alter a few things, I would change nothing. I am really happy with the way life has been, and I’m really grateful to the audience who’ve stuck by me and supported me for the last 17 years. I’m thankful that they love to see more of me, they shell out their time and money to watch me… What else can I ask for! I’m getting to work with the finest technicians in the country, the best of filmmakers and co-actors. Of course there’s a lot more to do, but I am just really happy with how it has all shaped up for me and the way things are going ahead. TAKING RISKS AND NOT SHYING AWAY FROM EXPLORING CHARACTERS… That’s where I belong. I’m fairly new in the film industry… six or seven years old and I still have a lot to do. I really want to showcase all that I have in me, entertain my audience, at the same time push my limits as an actor, explore boundaries, step closer to my aspirations and I think there are so many permutations and combinations that I want to explore. But I really do feel blessed that I am getting to do all of it. IS THERE ANY CHARACTER YOU ASSOCIATE WITH THE MOST IN REAL LIFE? Every character that I play has a part of me, although the degree varies from character to character as it’s impossible to disassociate completely. Also vice versa, there’s always a part of the character that you somehow take along with you and that becomes a part of your real life. So I’m a bit of everything I’ve done... Shutu (A Death in the Gunj), Bablu (Mirzapur), Rishu (Haseen Dillruba)…

I really want to showcase all that I have in me, entertain my audience, at the same time push my limits as an actor, explore boundaries, step closer to my aspirations and I think there are so many permutations and combinations that I want to explore. But I really do feel blessed that I am getting to do all of it. August 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 49

INTERVIEW SO HOW ARE YOU IN REAL LIFE? I’m a simple guy, like any other middle-class guy from Mumbai really. I still live in the same premise that I have lived all my life and I want to keep it that way. I am boring at times, I’m entertaining at times, I’m a family man at times, outgoing at times… So I’m a bit of everything. I don’t socialize much, stepping out is usually with friends or close family. So, I can be very boring in a lot of ways (laughs). WHAT DRAWS YOU TO A ROLE? There are so many reasons as to why I choose one particular script over another. The idea is to do atleast three to four films in a year and I want to do varied kind of stories belonging to different genres. I want to make sure that I reach out to the audience who made me what I am, and I’m consciously trying to do that. But at the same time and most importantly it has to offer me a challenge that I have not been offered before. It is of paramount importance for me to choose varied characters. At this stage in life I’m still fairly new and I really want to come out to my audience, my writers and filmmakers and showcase what I possess. DO YOU HAVE A PREFERENCE BETWEEN OTT OR MOVIES OR TV? I would apply preference to story not mediums. My job as an actor is to go out there and entertain people. I have done that on TV, in films on OTT. I really would not want to segregate or prioritize any medium per se, because all of these mediums can co-exist happily. As long as I communicate to my audience whatever way that suits them, I would use whatever medium, there’s no choice. But yes, OTT has given us all a chance to reach out wider. Consumption patterns have changed and we all have to adapt to these changing times. OTT HAS HELPED OPEN GATES FOR ACTORS ACROSS LEAGUES… VIKRANT’S WORD FOR:

It definitely has. It has opened so many opportunities not just for actors, even for writers, directors, producers… it has given them an opportunity to diversify and tap audience worldwide… to cater to more than 150 countries at one go. So the world has shrunk thanks to these OTT platforms. YOU ARE ALSO A TRAINED DANCER. DO YOU HOPE TO SHOWCASE YOUR DANCING SKILLS AS WELL… I’m not waiting for it, but somewhere down the line I am hoping for a role that brings out that facet of me too. So, I’m just taking life as it comes, but if there’s something that comes along on those lines then yes, I would like to take up that challenge and portray that as well. WHAT GENRE DO YOU FIND YOURSELF DRAWN TO THE MOST? Drama! I believe that human interpersonal relationships and conflicts are something that I specialize in. Like I said, my observations are something I want to bring to screen, so yes, drama it is. ARE YOU A METHOD ACTOR OR YOUR METHOD IS BEING MORE SPONTANEOUS? Depends on the part. There’s no one method. Different scripts demand different preparations. But I would want to say that I try maintaining that fine balance between spontaneity and method acting. I am still evolving as an actor, I’m still very young… so there’s lots of learning and growing, but yes there’s a mix of method and spontaneity there. WHAT ARE YOUR UPCOMING FILMS? There’s 14 Phere, a social comedy with Kriti Kharbanda. Then there’s Santosh Sivan’s Mumbaikar, the official remake of the Tamil action-thriller Maanagaram. Then I start filming for Forensic which is again an official adaptation of the film of the same name. It’s with Radhika Apte. WHAT’S THE ONE LIFE LESSON YOU HOLD DEAR? I always aspire. You know sometimes you succeed, sometimes you fail, but the idea is to stay relevant and communicate with the audience. To maintain that relativity and relevance with the audience is something I pay attention to consciously. The idea is to be real, to bring my observations from the world around as truly and sincerely as I can on screen and that’s what I want to do.

Paras ! l l o r a on Reigning the music video scene currently, TV star Paras Chhabra has been quite a rage post his stint on Bigg Boss 13 and his sizzling chemistry with rumoured girlfriend Mahira Sharma has been all the buzz. We caught up with the actor and in an exclusive chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, Paras talks about launching his own production house, turning director with his music video and reveals the secret of his

came to recognize me on a much larger scale.

special equation with Mahira

HAS THERE BEEN A CHANGE IN OFFERS POST BIGG BOSS? Absolutely, especially when it came to music videos. Also OTT is something I’m looking at.

YOU’VE HAD A VERY INTERESTING START IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY? Yes, people know about my journey as the winner from Splitsvilla 5 (2012), but my journey started much earlier that no one knows about. Before making it big on TV I have worked in call centers, worked as a manager in cab services, salon and even cold storage. But I would end up getting sacked from all these places as I was underage. Later when I joined a gym as a manager, as part of our training, I lost a lot of weight myself. From a 120 kilos, I was down to 86 kilos in two months and my features also got sharper. It was then that I got my first offer to walk the ramp and I was the only fresher among top models. So after the show there were girls wanting to be clicked with me, young kids taking pics, and I got my first taste of fandom. It was then that I decided that this is what I wanted. But I was a novice and I remember I had walked in for an audition without a portfolio, but luckily I was selected and I went on to do the brands that John Abraham and Arjun Rampal had done when they first started out. But I wasn’t satisfied with hoardings and posters and wanted to do something bigger, so I did international brands too. Splitsvilla followed and during post-production I did some of the biggest and leading brands. So yes, people don’t know much about this journey as a model. TELEVISION AND MORE POPULARITY FOLLOWED? Ironically back then, when I was trying for TV, nothing was happening, so I tried photography. But when I was just settling there, I suddenly started getting offers from TV and there was no looking back once that started. SO WHAT WAS THE GAME-CHANGER FOR YOU? The big milestone of course was Bigg Boss 13. Till then I was known among the youth because of Splitsvilla and largely the TV audience besides the modelling fraternity. But Bigg Boss made me a household name pan-India and people

YOU PREFER MUSIC VIDEOS OVER SHOWS? I think it works great. It’s quick work as compared to shows especially during the pandemic when shows and movies are on hold. YOU HAVE RECENTLY LAUNCHED YOUR OWN PRODUCTION HOUSE AND TURNED DIRECTOR TOO? Yes, I have launched my own production house and we are going to release our maiden production – our first song. I have also directed the video. I’m a creative person and I have imagination issues and I’m always imagining things (laughs), so I’ve used it in my videos. But it’s too early to talk about it. All I can tell you is that it’s a hip-hop, rap number and its shot interestingly. It’s a new vintage look and features Mahira. YOUR EQUATION WITH MAHIRA… TELL US ABOUT THAT. We are very close and share a great comfort zone. Our off screen chemistry just translates well on screen too. We are friends, we are family… we vibe really well. So call it what you will, but we trust each other as friends and actors and yes the chemistry is there. SO DO YOU WANT TO DIRECT ON A MUCH LARGER SCALE, LIKE A MOVIE? Yes someday for sure. But these are future plans. Till I have face value, I want to act and act more. But then on the side, I also want to continue understanding the craft of filmmaking. DUBAI SEEMS TO BE AMONG YOUR FAVOURITE CITIES. It’s definitely one of my most favourite cities. We shot for my latest song ‘Kashmiri Apple’ in Dubai and we are looking forward to shooting some more songs there. In fact, I wanted to celebrate my birthday in Dubai, but could not travel due to the travel restrictions. August 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 51

Independence DaySpecial!

As India gears to celebrate its Independence Day on August 15, here’s taking a look at some of the most-popular Bollywood films that stir up the patriotic fervour and fill you with pride

Border (1997) The JP Dutta war-drama pays homage to India’s brave soldiers.
