The Year of Hope It is December and we come to the end of 2021 which was a mixed year but the year of hope. The Dubai Expo kickstarted in the UAE and brought in visitors from the world over. The pandemic in the UAE was curbed efficiently and people could start organizing as well as attending events, with social distancing norms in place. We, at Filmfare Middle East started the year with The Social Night where we brought in social media influencers, Youtubers, Bloggers and felicitated them. Nora Fatehi unveiled the February 2021 cover. Then came the coffee table book launch on the Most Influential Women that gathered the boss ladies of the country together on our platform and we had the music composer Amaal Mallik enthrall them with his songs. Our home-grown event Arab Asia Starz that ushered in the second season brought in talent from across the country and India in the fields of fashion, beauty and entertainment. Our celebrity judges were Zareen Khan and Elli AvrRam. The actors couldn’t attend the event owing to travel restrictions from India.

We have the powerhouse performer Nawazuddin Siddiqui on our December cover. A man whose talent, the world has acknowledged and recognized through his numerous film roles and then roles on OTT. I first met him at the Dubai international Film Festival when he came to promote a film titled Monsoon Shootout directed by Amit Kumar. It had three endings wherein Nawaz play the antagonist and Vijay Varma plays the cop. Over the years I met him at several film promotions in Dubai that included Maanjhi: The Mountain Man, Freaky Ali, Manto, etc and each time I met him, he greeted me in exactly the same warmth and affection as he did when we first met. Nawaz walked the red carpet at the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night on October 28th 2021 and was felicitated with the Filmfare Middle East Excellence in Cinema. As we speak, his film produced by Kangana Ranaut, Tiku weds Sheru is being shot. I met Pakistani actor Ali Zafar at the Address Beach Resort last month where we spoke on music, spirituality and how the last few years have been tough on him. Zafar is perhaps one of the first Pakistani actors to have made the successful crossover between Pakistani and Indian cinema having worked with SRK, Katrina Kaif, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Aditi Rao Hydari, Govinda, Yami Gautam to name a few. The TRP queen Rakhi Sawant spoke to me about her love for the UAE and how she lauds the country’s foresight and open-ness to include all cultures and be open to advancements and events. Ranjeet saab, the baddie of Indian cinema spoke to me at length about his life and times and how he was destined for the big screen and stupendous success. An Indian Air Force aspirant who found his way to Mumbai and make a mark as a villain in Hindi cinema is a story to catch up on. He particularly mentions how his actresses would be comfortable working with him though he had some violent scenes with him and the he would give them cues such as ‘slap me’, ‘pull my hair,’ etc, to make the scenes look authentic onscreen. As we wait to welcome 2022, here is a wish going out to all of you to have a Merry Christmas and indulge in all the partying, the end of the year brings with it Party with care though! COVER STORY NAWAZUDDIN SIDDIQUI GETS CANDID WITH MANJU RAMANAN
Bespoken Bliss ! Ring in the cheer! 2021 seems to have passed us by in a rush! And it’s almost like the social dams had burst this year - whether it’s the ongoing marriage season or the party scene – it’s a no holds barred show. And for good reason too, people do want put behind the reminders of the global pandemic and add in as many years as possible furthering themselves away from 2020. But the biggest celebration of them all. The country celebrates the 50th UAE National Day on December 2, marking the glorious golden jubilee since its unification of the seven emirates to form a federation. What’s most amazing is how the country has become the window to the world and has come to represent hope, progress, and that opportunity to accomplish and achieve your dreams not just for the locals but for the professionals from across the globe who have made it home. A big salute to the rulers, the visionaries and the spirit of UAE! It’s December folks… A month that spells fun vacays or cosying up at home with gifts tucked under the Christmas tree and delectable cinematic treats as well as those from the food cabinets waiting to be raided. A time when we can kiss our dieting plans good-bye and even get rid of the guilt by promising ourselves to go on a strict diet from the next year as part of our ‘New Year Resolutions’. For those who will be working, there’re always office parties and Secret Santas to keep you pepped up. So loads of shopping and partying ahead. I personally can’t wait to see Dubai being lit up all across. It makes me want to believe in Santa Claus once again, believe in magic, in fairy tales, and in love. It’s also that time of the year when the memories of the year gone by and the excitement of what lies ahead in the new year puts us into a euphoric bubble. And while ‘tis the time to eat and make merry, there are many who do end up being rather hard on themselves. Looking back with mixed emotions, I believe it’s a good time to actually remind ourselves of how far we have come. So as we countdown to new tidings, let’s also count away all negativities and celebrate ourselves this New Year. So ring in the cheer guys! Here’s wishing everyone...
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and see you all in 2022! Aakanksha Naval-Shetye DEPUTY EDITOR

AKSHAY KUMAR TO PLAY WAR HERO MAJOR GENERAL IAN CARDOZO After Atrangi Re and Raksha Bandhan, Akshay Kumar and Aanand L Rai are collaborating once again. This time for a biopic called Gorkha, which is based on the life of major general Ian Cardozo, a legendary officer of the Gorkha regiment of the Indian Army(5th Gorkha Rifles). The film will be helmed by Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan. “I feel honored for this story to be told on the 50th anniversary of the 1971 war. It commemorates the courage and sacrifice of the armed forces of India. I look forward to working with Anand & Akshay as they bring this to life. This story reflects the values and spirit of every officer of the Indian Army,” shared major general Ian Cardozo AVSM SM.
RANBIR BELIEVES ALIA WILL WIN NATIONAL AWARD FOR GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI Alia Bhatt is one of the most phenomenal actors in our country. Her performance and choice of roles just gets better with every film. We can’t wait for her next - Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi. Ranbir Kapoor who watched a few parts of Alia Bhatt’s film was reportedly mesmerised by her acting. A close friend of RK spoke to a portal and said that Ranbir believes that Alia will win the National Award for the film as she is mind blowing in it. Well, our excitement for Gangubai just doubled. This film is all set to release on January 6, 2022 and also stars Ajay Devgn in a cameo. Incidentally, Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn will also be seen in SS Rajamouli’s RRR, which will also release on the same day. More the merrier.
Ibrahim Ali Khan assisting Karan Johar Saif Ali Khan has confirmed that his son Ibrahim is assisting Karan Johar for Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. The young lad is also preparing to become an actor. Assisting Karan is the first step towards that direction. He’s hoping to learn from the film’s lead actors – Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. Karan Johar earlier had Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan as his assistants in My Name Is Khan (2010) and then he directed the boys in Student Of The Year (2012). Now we wonder if the director will take Ibrahim under his wings too and give him the big break. 8 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST December 2021

expert advice KARTIK AARYAN HAD TO GAIN 14 KGS FOR FREDDY Stars like Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Vidya Balan are known to transform their body to fit the requirements of a role. Joining this list of dedicated actors is Kartik Aaryan, who had to gain almost 14 kgs for Freddy. The role required the fit actor to bulk up. Despite being a vegetarian, he made it happen within the set time frame. Kartik worked with his trainer Samir Jaura to get the required weight and body shape. The actor had grown a moustache for Pati Patni Aur Woh, he finished Dhamaka in just 10 days. He sure knows how to give his all to a project.

GOT OVERFILLED? NOW WHAT? We are lucky to live in a time of dermalfiller injections, but when botched, you are swarmed with images of scarily-altered faces of celebrities who barely look like themselves.
WHAT DO YOU DO? 1. HAVE PATIENCE When you’re in the midst of super-swollen lips, “patience” is the best advice. Take a few deep breaths, and remind yourself that swelling does not always occur evenly, and until all swelling dissipates it is impossible for you to evaluate your results. If the swelling is super problematic for you, taking an OTC anti-inflammatory can help, and icing the area may provide relief. Everyone heals differently, but your body can need up to 2-weeks to fully integrate the injected product. If not, opt for: 2. FILLER MASSAGE The product will remain malleable for a month after it has been injected. The younger the patient, the stronger the facial muscles and the product might migrate. Sometimes these muscles can pull the filler into areas other than where it was injected. Don’t worry though, unruly product usually can be massaged into obedience.
REVATHY TO DIRECT KAJOL IN HER NEXT
ACTRESS TURNED DIRECTOR REVATHY WILL DIRECT KAJOL IN HER UPCOMING FILM, THE LAST HURRAH. INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY, THE LAST HURRAH TELLS A TALE OF AN EXEMPLARY MOTHER, SUJATA, WHO BATTLED THE MOST CHALLENGING SITUATIONS ONE CAN EVER FACE WITH A SMILE. THE FILM IS CURRENTLY IN PRE-PRODUCTION AND WILL SOON GO ON FLOORS.

KATRINA-VICKY ARE HAVING A DESTINATION WEDDING Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal have always maintained that they’re just good friends. The two never opened up about their relationship status and always kept us guessing. And before the masses could enjoy their not-so-secret romance, the actors are already on their way to walking down the aisle. While neither Katrina nor Vicky have confirmed the wedding rumours, we hear that Kat and Vicky will get married at Six Senses Fort Barwara, a resort in Sawai Madhopur. This fort is close to Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan. It’s a 14th century fort which has been converted into a sanctuary and wellness spa. The fort has a palace and two temples. It’s said that the wedding will happen in the first week of December. Meanwhile, we’ve also heard that Katrina has already roped in Sabyasachi for an elaborate wedding attire for her D-Day.
3. HYALURONIDASE INJECTIONS (VITRASE, WYDASE) As long as you were injected with a filler that is hyaluronic-acid based (and most of them are; including Restylane, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, and Juvederm Voluma) you always have the nuclear option: the filler can be dissolved away with Hyaluronidase. This allows you to return to baseline like the whole thing never happened. 4. SELECTING THE RIGHT PROVIDER Put your face in the hands of an experienced injector always.
FILLERS MADE WITH POLY-L-LACTIC ACID (SCULPTRA) OR CALCIUM-BASED MICROSPHERES (RADIESSE) AREN’T PERMANENT, BUT BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT HYALURONIC-ACID BASED THEY ARE NOT AS EASILY REVERSIBLE AS THE RESTYLANE AND JUVEDERM FAMILIES.

s we hear about his nomination at the International Emmy awards, he walks into the Meydan Hotel as he checks in for the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night and the crowds wait to catch a glimpse of him. A gentle smile, a wave and a flurry of selfies
later, you get a glimpse of this powerhouse of talent, who has risen to the annals of fame and stardom by being an actor – true to his core and lauded across the world. Never has Nawazuddin Siddiqui accepted roles that didn’t speak to him. He has never played the typecast Hindi film hero. In fact, he is very critical of the cliched way in which they are portrayed. Starting his career with a half a minute sequence in Sarfarosh, where he misses a bullet, to playing a pick-pocket in Munnabhai MBBS and then winning awards and accolades worldwide in the film festival circuits with films such as Bypass, Miss Lovely, Gangs of
Wasseypur, Lunchbox etc and then huge commercial success – Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a name to reckon with in the world of cinema. Humility, patience, resilience and sheer talent has given us gems such as Kahaani, Talaash, Gangs of Wasseypur, Manto, Photograph, Raman
Raghav, Manjhi: The Mountain Man, Thackeray, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Lunchbox and more. His OTT series have won hearts and accolades galore – be it playing the famed Gaitonde of Sacred
Games or Ayyan Mani of Serious Men, the satirical comedy film directed by Sudhir Mishra, to featuring in music videos by B Praak and now playing the protagonist in Kangana Ranaut’s first production Tiku weds Sheru. Manju Ramanan chats up with the actor-par-excellence Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
You have been busier than ever, travelling the world for your shoots during and post lockdown? Yes, I have been travelling a lot. It is a different experience when you shoot in different countries. I shot in London during the first lockdown and it is great to be surrounded by a different kind of crew, different people with varied thought processes. Actors can absorb and learn from people and it enhances our experiences. That way, we are in tune with what people think and enter a whole new world of thought. I shot Heropanti 2 in London as well as Sangeen. I have a base in Dubai and my kids study here.
Tell us about your latest project Tiku weds Sheru and working with Kangana Ranaut? It is Kangana’s first film as a producer, she is super passionate about making films and this is her first venture. She is very systematic. Every department is filled with experts on the job. The cameraman for instance is from Spain, her make up department, her costume unit, all of it has experts at the helm. I sincerely hope that with such passion injected to every department of the film, it will certainly make a big mark. What about Adbhut. You have worked in this genre before? Yes, I have but this is a very different kind of film. It is extremely realistic, cool and intelligently made. Sabbir Khan has directed the film and he is known to direct commercial projects. I didn’t fathom that he could look so minutely into the field of acting but he did so and got the best out of his actors. It is a stupendous approach. The way he has designed the character and given it fire, is very interesting. Otherwise the character is boring and only bothered about his December 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 11

work. These kinds of characters are often explored in European cinema but, for the first time, they have been explored in Hindi films. It is a passion project for me. The supernatural thriller also stars Diana Penty, Rohan Mehra and Shreya Dhanwanthary. Tell us about the OTT space and script being centered around interesting characters such as Serious Men? It has been rare in Bollywood that a film is character-centric. Mr Amitabh Bachchan has done many films where the character has been the centre of the film, more than other actors. But that genre gave way to the story being central to the film. Thanks to the change in recent years, films and web-series are now becoming charactercentric. In the OTT space, characters with grey shades are interesting because the characters bond with audiences and remind them of people they know or have seen around. The hero/heroine/villain formula is dying out and audiences today are more discerning. In fact, they have contributed immensely to this change. Do you see the era of superstars change with OTT? If the superstar film is content driven, people will watch it. Or else, people have options in the OTT space. Often small budget films are ignored by theatre owners because nearly all big screens are booked by superstar films. OTT has liberated them and given them an equal opportunity to showcase their work. I used to go to international film festivals and I have seen people make fun of our cinema. I mean
I
have seen that time when I didn’t even have a single penny in my pocket. And it stayed like that for two-three years. I used to have lunch at one friend’s place, dinner at other’s and a third friend would
get cigarettes for me. I came to Mumbai with Rs 2,500. If I again face a situation where I am left with just Rs 2,500, I would not feel like a failure. I am not afraid of anything. 12 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST December 2021

the typical ones. I was told that they are made because the audience likes only that kind of cinema. No Land’s Man was at the Busan Film Festival. Tell us about it? Yes, the film went to Busan and then to Cairo film festivals. It is a fast-paced film and it is a lot engaging than films you would expect to see at festivals. It is about a man in search of his identity and that journey is the film. Mustafa Farooqui has handled the script so well and the screen-play is amazing too. You have been part of music videos too. A romantic image has been created? Is that a conscious decision? I never thought of doing a music video but it came my way and I gave it a shot. Thanks to Jani and Rajesh Khera, we could record it in B Praak’s voice. I will be happy to do another music video as well. It is a challenge and I like to get out of my comfort zone and do these things. I have done light, romantic love stories in films but my characters are always intense. Who knows I might do a romantic film where the character is not intense. From the village of Budhana that was known for gun, ganna aur gehun to dominating the film and OTT scene, how do you see your journey? What are the moments of laughter? My village Budhana has a lot of interesting people and some, very dramatic too. A lot of characters I have played onscreen are people I have seen around me, with their nuances and their quirks. There is a lot of drama in their life and I have picked many of their characteristics while playing my role in Gangs of Wasseypur, the cop in Kahaani and so on. When I think of adding nuance to a character, my imagination goes to the people I know, the ones I have grown up with and that is why they look authentic when portrayed onscreen. I have a lot of memories of my village Budhana and this is my life and though certain incidents happen to you back then, you realise that after a long time that you can sit back and laugh at it. You have blasted the stereotype be it the conventional hero or the conventional formula film - how tough was it to say no to formula? Formula films se door ka rasta raha hai. Ek napi-tuli kahaani hoti hai. (I have a distant relationship with formula films. It is a measured
and weighed story). It doesn’t fascinate me that a conventional Hindi film hero, who we have seen for the last 20-25 years, who has no major skills and has the heroine fall for him, who kills 40-50 people by himself, whose inner thought processes you hardly December 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 13

With simplicity, you can deal with everything in life. If you take things seriously, then it is tough. Fame comes and goes and some people think you are an actor, others call you a star. It is in their perception. I just want to do good work, focus on my acting, that is all. It is motivation, hard work and honesty that you need to present a character that is authentic to the audiences and that is always my chase. Would you return to theatre someday and would you direct plays or films? What are your future projects? I always wanted to be an actor and that is all I can do. I cannot direct either plays or films. Right now, I am not interested in theatre. My next releases are No Land’s Man, Tiku weds Sheru, Heropanti 2 and Sangeen and I am excited about all of them.
know, is heralded as the ultimate in cinema. The Bollywood hero is a filmy hero not the heroes you read about in books – extraordinary people who cross tough situations and win in their life. I can never play that hero. I like characters who have usual and unusual habits in them, thought processes that audiences can gel with or a transformation in their inner world. The word ‘unconventional hero’ is a coined term without any clear sense. What is unconventional to others can be conventional to me. I have been told that I am not the beefy, fair and handsome hero material but I find that description unconventional because most people in India look like me. The average skin tone, their height, size and the way they are. I am conventional (Laughs) and the zameeni reality (earthy reality) shown in my films adds to what I am. You never wanted to be a star. You always wanted to be an actor. Now that you are both, how do you deal with the fame?
How do you find Dubai and its people? You won the Filmfare ME Excellence in Cinema felicitation at the Filmfare ME Achievers Night? Dubai is a beautiful city and my children study here. Everything about the city is organized and people are honest here. I love the city and the audiences were very loving and respectful. I felt very proud to receive the Filmfare Middle East Excellence in Cinema felicitation. I feel I should come to the city more often. Who are the people you admire and look up to? Rajesh Tailang, Girish Kulkarni and Manoj Bajpayee sir. How many films did you consume during the lockdown? I have been bingeing on films. I have watched close to 150-200 films of my favourite actors Anthony Hopkins, Matthew McConoughey, Tony Lang, Kevin Spacey etc. Also, during the lockdown, I had the opportunity to speak to myself and reflect on my thoughts. Your memories with the late Irrfan, who we lost last year? I know Irrfan bhai from the year 2000 and he recommended me in many films including Slumdog Millionaire. I couldn’t make it for that film and I didn’t know it would become so big. He directed me in a star best seller and then we did Bypass. He was my mentor and longtime associate. And then we did Lunchbox. He was phenomenal in it!

How has your relationship with makeup changed over the years?
Would you pick heels that look great but hurt or flats that are ugly but very comfortable? I’ll pick heels that hurt.
What’s the last thing you think before walking the ramp?
Am I looking PHAT (Pretty Hot And Tempting)
What are the three things you look for before signing a film?
Obviously, the script, my part and how important it is in the story and now, the third is where the shoot is happening. With children it is very difficult to do a movie that is shot all over the world. It’s not possible. Also,

For me, I’ve probably tried everything possible in make-up. Through my association with Lakmé, we’ve always tried to reinvent. Be it the Kajal or now the lip paint, I think I’m always ready to experiment. As an artiste, I like to try new things, whether it is in photoshoots or films. For instance, when nobody was going for the clean look, I did Dev and Omkara. When no one was wearing a bold red lip, I did an entire film like Chameli with the garish make-up. So, I love to experiment with make-up. It depends on how I’m feeling.
You’ve had an unmatched longevity in Bollywood. After 21 years in the industry, what continues to drive you?
Just the idea of believing in myself. I know it’s been 21 years but I know there’s going to be another 21 years because I’m confident about it. I know I have to make it happen. Maybe fewer films because of the children but I know I want to keep doing something

that about his collection. But his collections are always very OTT and meant for cocktails, princess like, divaesque. So it’s perfect for the finale.
As sustainability is of top priority, how much have your choices changed over the years?
want to read about it. Don’t come to my page because I just want to have fun. Simple.
People are making a lot more conscious choices than before. Thanks to the blogs and the endless writing about it, I’m happy that the conversation has even started. Whether it is inclusivity, diversity or sustainability, these things need to be addressed in fashion. I’m just happy they are talking about it. This fashion week was also about that and I’m excited to see the conversation is going ahead.
You last walked for Gaurav Gupta in 2015. What’s different this time around?
If you were in a room with Poo, Geet, Chameli and Rosie, who would you greet first and why?
Whether it is inclusivity, diversity or
sustainability, these things need to be addressed new and it’s time to try something different. It’s all about my confidence. Be it walking the ramp in the different phases, like when I was pregnant, or I had just delivered or being seven months into giving birth, the idea is to be super comfortable in my skin, look super good and be confident. It’s my way of sending out a message to all women that confidence can take you places.
What’s the most
in fashion
bizarre trend you saw on social media that made you cringe?
There are quite a few but my digital team will kill me if I point them out. I’m still getting used to the social media drill. But I’m enjoying it. I love taking my selfies and putting them up. I’m having my fun. I don’t read comments and I don’t want to know what people are saying. I don’t want any negativity on my page. If people are negative, I don’t

INTERVIEW
The
Baddie of
Tinseltown He wears a ready-made turban that looks like an Arabic head-gear and teems it up with his robe that has become his signature style over the years. Legendary bad man and well-known onscreen villain Ranjeet, who attended the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night speaks to Manju Ramanan in a candid interview.
It is not easy to suppress laughter when the legendary Ranjeet saab talks about his roles in Bollywood. That he played the role of a brother in two films and then was the onscreen thug even serial rapist in over a 500 plus films. Called Goli fondly for being an ace goal-keeper playing football in real life, Ranjeet Saab was chosen to join the Indian Air Force but was suspended when his coach disliked his closeness towards his daughter. Cinema and the Hindi film industry happened by chance and on the first day of his arrival in Mumbai, he was dining with wellknown film-maker Chetan Anand and actress Priya Rajvansh, the second day was dinner with Sunil and Nargis Dutt and the third day, he met Raj Kapoor. Destiny had carved his path for him and he confesses that he never had to knock doors to be in the Hindi film industry. Small roles in films happened till he struck gold as the proverbial bad man onscreen.
From Gopal to Ranjeet
No one except Kareem Morani addresses me by my birth name Gopal. I was born near Amritsar on September 12th 1942 and come from an orthodox family that eventually moved to Delhi. We weren’t allowed to read any magazines with photographs of women and when I eventually went to Mumbai, I would refrain from looking at the provocative film posters thinking that they would weaken me. My grand -dad was the school principal and was very strict. I remember the time of the partition faintly. The houses burning, the screams of Har Har Mahadev and Allah hu Akbar and how everyone would put utensils in their heads and cover that with a dupatta or

shawl to avoid sword strikes on them. Sunil Dutt saab gave me this name and it stuck!
Childhood Musings
I was a playful child and studied in a government school. During exams the school would build tents on our school grounds and conduct oral exams and written exams within it. Once, I had completed my oral exams and was waiting in the writing exam tent. This tent had a lot of inkpots where we dipped our wooden pens and wrote on Takhtis (wooden slates covered with multani mitti). I used to play marbles and when I saw the ink pots, aimed at each one of them and broke them with my marbles. Needless to say, I got a sound thrashing. I come from a strict vegetarian family where we didn’t eat garlic or onions too. We were encouraged to drink fresh milk. I remember, how we used to wait for the milkman would squirt warm milk right from the cow’s udders to our glasses and we would relish it.
Carefree Adolescence
After school, I applied for the Indian Air Force and was selected too. However, I got friendly with one of the girls there whose father was a coach and I was thrown out. The good thing was, I wasn’t bothered about it at all. I went to college and hung around the place despite dropping out. That is when I met producer Ronnie Singh at a friend’s home who thought I could act in movies. I went to meet him at Claridge’s Hotel in Delhi and he was making a film on truck drivers Zindagi ki Raahein and wanted me to play the cleaner. He is the reason I came to Mumbai. He put me up in hotel Sun n Sand and my journey began. To my parents though, I lied that my football team wants me to be in Mumbai. And my innocent parents believed in my lies. My mother gave me a Patek Phillipe watch and a gold chain. She told me that it is a big bad city and if at any time, I wanted to come
home, I could sell my gold chain and return home.
Surrounded by Stars
Ronnie took me to meet Chetan Anand the next morning and I met him and actress Priya Rajvansh. That night I spent in his home fighting mosquitoes and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa because I had never stayed away from home and felt unsafe. The following day, we were at the Sun n Sand Hotel pool area and it was the very first time I saw women wearing bikinis and swim-wear. The same diving board where Sharmila Tagore had stood in a bikini and given that famous shot was infront of me. Soon, I was introduced to a Malaysian lady who was researching on the Ramayana who was Mr Sunil Dutt’s guest and then, walked the handsome Sunil Dutt wiping his wet hair, his eyes blood-shot red due to the chlorinated water in the pool. I remembered his dialogues and was awe-struck by his personality when he told us to join us home in Pali Hill. So, off we went and started our drinks and partying till 3 am when a sweet voice reminded us to have our dinner. It was Nargis Dutt, whose Mother India was a rage and here she was attending to her husband’s guests at 3 am midnight, feeding them. Her matka ghosth was well-known and they served me. When I told them I was vegetarian, she graciously served me daal and warm rotis. I was touched by her gesture. Such famous people but so humble. The third day I met Raj Kapoor saab when Ronnie took me to his studio. I actually saw a scene of Mera Naam Joker being edited by Raj Saab himself. I was taking in the city – that brought all these people to my life. I never struggled or asked for roles. They just came my way.
Aamchi Mumbai
I felt safe and secure in Mumbai despite Ronnie deciding to shelve the film and return

to London. I was on his payroll earning Rs 750 per month, living in a big bungalow with a car and servants and all that. So, money was never an issue since I had no spends. It was also the time I was planning to return home to Delhi though I had made good friends in the industry that included Sanjay and Feroz Khan, Dutt sahab etc. One day Dilip Kumar’s brother met me and offered me accommodation in his sister’s bungalow near Mount Mary and I moved there. Help was extended to be automatically. I didn’t go seeking anything. Sunil Dutt offered me a role in Reshma Aur Shera where I play Waheeda Rahman’s brother and I got a role in Saawan Bhadon as Rekha’s lazy brother. Those were the only two films where I played the brother because destiny had other plans for me (Laughs). He reminisces on how, during the shoot of Reshma aur Shera, he, Amitabh Bachchan, writer Ali Raza, BS Thapa, Waheeda Rahman and Rakhee would share the same tent. Amitabh would read the Geeta every morning and diligently write letters to his parents. It was on the flight back with Rakhee, that she told her about her next film Sharmilee and recommended that he meet the director. That kickstarted his innings as the onscreen baddie of Hindi cinema.
Playing the Villain
Sharmilee became my turning point. The premiere happened in Delhi. By then, parents had got to know that I had become a marasi (entertainer) and looked down on my choice of profession. They were sad. But their sadness hadn’t started. (Laughs). During the premiere of the film, I had become reasonably famous and had started signing autographs. During the break the entire star cast was called onstage and I was called too but I saw my folks missing from the audience. On my return, I had to drop Rakhee and go home.
I went home to an aghast family. They were ashamed that I chose to pull women’s sarees and misbehave with them. They told me why I didn’t choose to play a doctor, policeman or an honest guy. How will they face their friends back home or family members? Eventually they understood what I was doing and at times my mom used to take her friends to watch my movies – but wouldn’t stay till the end since I would usually die. She would start crying hysterically when she saw me die onscreen.
The Hectic Days
Then I started getting work right, left and center. Pran Sahab, Prem Chopra and Madan Puri dominated the scene in those days and I was the young baddie. Films around that times were very simple. By taking me in the film, they didn’t have to establish the villain because I was the villain always. We designed our own look. We had tailors those days and not dedicated designers for all. I started wearing different collars or torn collars and wore big lockets to establish my look. A tie somewhere, broad belts somewhere else, it was all personal styling. I had no complex about being beaten by the hero. I had no creative confusions or yearning to do different roles. Around the 80’s I decided to quit acting and be a film maker. I did two films – Karnaama and Gajab Tamasha and both were well appreciated.
My actresses were my friends
I have had the greatest friends in the actresses I worked with. There was a time that my home was open to all the stars who hang out there even when I wasn’t at home. I wasn’t married then and it was

usual to see parties where Reena Roy is making parathas, Moushmi Chatterjee cooking fish, Parveen Babi serving drinks and actors such as Amitabh Bachachan, Dharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha chilling at my farm. I would sometimes have to take my girlfriends away in my trailer van for some privacy. (Laughs). Onscreen all the heroines I misbehaved with would want to work with me because I would give them cues on how to react. “Pull my hair, slap my face,” I would tell them and they were comfortable in those scenes. Unlike others who would take advantage of the situation. In fact, scenes were created in films for me for special appearances. In parties’ people would hide their wives from me thinking that I would ensnare them. My onscreen image of a lecherous man was rampant though I wasn’t like that in real life. I lived well – I drove the best cars, lived in the best home and lived well. I don’t smoke and I don’t enjoy drinking but onscreen I did everything. But by the 90s I got bored of onscreen killing, kidnapping and raping. I was working so hard that I couldn’t meet my parents visiting us. When my parents took a cab to reach the airport and my dad yelled at me, is when I realised why am I running after work so much. I declined 18 films and decided to quit acting and focus on film-making. I made Karnaama which is about a man and his beloved horse – the film was made against the background of horse racing. I got a standing ovation and praise from film makers. Also, most people were surprised that the love scenes in the film were aesthetically shot and was not lecherous or sleazy.
What are the qualities of a proverbial villain?
I don’t know. Nothing. Be normal. Don’t show off. At one point the villain was distinguished with his black and white cigarette box or his large framed glasses or his wide belt. Not anymore. Today there is no such character anymore.
Cinema Today
I worked with Akshay in Housefull and loved it. I worked in a TV serial Baat Ban Jaaye and people started recognizing me as Col Khanna instead of Ranjeet. I also did 7-8 plays and toured the US with theatre. They were Papa Don’t Preach and Hanky Panky. December 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 27

t’s not every day that one gets to meet a magician and to be honest, I have never interviewed one before. The word magic and magician conjures all sorts of images. Hats, rabbits, wands, cards, robes, tricks… even witches, wizards and the world of Harry Potter. And though I have followed DMC and his intriguing series on Netflix, I find it hard to imagine what to expect even as I walk in for our scheduled meet. Looking dapper in a sharp suit, an unmissable vintage snake brooch, a bespectacled gentleman greets me with a warm smile and the three Hindi - hosla (courage), pyaar (love), vishwas (faith) tattooed on his bald pate confirm that he indeed is Drummond Money-Coutts - one of the world’s most famous magicians!

Naval-Shetye, the card specialist talks all about his fascination with
magic,
his

connection with India and also reveals why he doesn’t always confess to being a magician
I start with the most obvious questions that had been high on my mind. Considering that magic is approached with so much skepticism and has so many different connotations, what is the first reaction he gets on saying that he’s a magician. Confirming the validity of the question, he says, “The trick is that a lot of times I don’t because I know the next few questions that will follow. So depending on the situation, I either confess to being a magician or I make up a far less interesting profile. So it’s not always that I do confess to being a magician.” He continues, “It depends more on the location than anything else and the culture of the place I am at. Like in India it’s jaadu and there are jaadugars, P. C. Sorcar is part of the culture here… so there’s a lot of warmth and acceptance towards magic. I would say there’s a lot more cynicism in the UK than a lot of other countries and people there like to challenge the magician.”
Magical attraction! Admitting the initial apprehensions that some may have in believing in magic, DMC feels that most actually just would like to enjoy it. “There’s hardly anybody on the planet who doesn’t adore that childish sense of awe and wonder and astonishment. Almost everybody just wants to feel and enjoy that rush, enjoy that experience of magic.”

Love at first ‘sleight’ Belonging to London’s wealthy and renowned financial dynasty of Coutts & Co that his family has headed for decades, what made him delve into magic as a profession? “Literally underneath the vaults of the Bank that my father headed, there was the oldest magic shop in the UK which is more than a 100 years old and run by the 4th generation of the same family. When I was eight, my father took me there, and I was just so amazed. That’s how it all started.” He adds that while he had always been fascinated with life’s great mysteries, he suddenly discovered this world of magic as a performance art. “I bought a deck of cards and I started learning card magic. It gave me such a powerful sense of astonishment, I discovered that I could hand that same feeling to other people. My family are all bankers. I was studying to become one too and even started working after college. But I realized I could make more money with my private shows than I did there. It was quite a transitional moment for all of us. So by the time I left university, I went full time into the London scene successfully and then to Los Angeles and having the highest budget production of magic show ever made.”
India connect “I have been coming to the Middle East for quite a few years, doing shows for some of the royal families in the Gulf. I have a lot of love, respect, romanticism for this part of the world and its culture.” But it is with India that Drummond admits to sharing a strong karmic connection with. A love that was first felt by his grandmother who visited India in the 1960s. A love that was rooted deeper in him. In fact, his belief he’s tattooed are Hindi words. “I remember landing in Delhi after being in the pristine glass and steel office for six months back in London and suddenly it is this beautiful chaos, the food, energy, the people… It was like stepping into one of the romantic novels of India and that love has only gotten stronger. In fact, my dream is to base myself in Mumbai. India has always been my ek number. It’s one of my favourite places, so I would like to be based there, but very much coming to Gulf region.”
Magical tidings What makes DMC unique from others his kind is his approach to story-telling. “I think many magicians are fixated on the idea of fooling someone and that’s where it stops for me. Magic has always been a vehicle for something that emotionally resonates with you or has a narrative or a purpose to it, and not just something that baffles you. It’s like a piece of music that sounds good, but then there is music that touches you in some way and the lyrics move you. And I have always aspired to create magic that does that. I love it when someone truly adores magic, and that’s the greatest thing. Seeing that childlike hunger for the experience of magic that tickles a part of their mind, that’s the real magic.”
of magic. Some of these are very positive, but some can be destructive and negative. I try to travel as much as possible to both experience and perform magic.”
Challenging audience “People have always sought to expose magic for its fundamental powers. But for me that is one part of the experience. Even if someone thinks they know what I am doing it becomes irrelevant to me as it’s just a tiny part of it. So it’s good to have people challenging me and then me wowing them. That’s the experience of magic.” He adds, “Nobody cares about the secrets of magic, it is the experience that is magical. It’s like guarding an empty box. People want to know about it, but once you stop holding on to that, it’s not going to concern them.”
Big screen capers “I liked Hrithik Roshan in Guzaarish,” he says talking about the portrayal. He’s also performed for Amitabh Bachchan, who incidentally had played a magician in Jaadugar. “He has a curious, and a sharp mind,” says DMC.
Defining magic “I believe there’s far more magic in the world and within ourselves than any work of the magician.” From turning skeptics into believers, Drummond reveals that the greatest joy is to see people embrace magic that they were challenging minutes ago. “It’s like I need new haters because all old ones have become fans,” he smiles. Explaining what magic truly is, he says it’s an ever shifting Rubik’s cube. “The dimensions, the interpretations are always changing. A kid in Disneyland and a monk in the Himalayas will approach it differently. It changes geographically, culturally, historically, and then there’s the universal magic of kindness, of the human spirit and so many elements of the human mind that lie beyond the magic tricks. It’s like love. Each will have a valid interpretation and definition formed by experience. Magic means everything and nothing, it’s not tangible. It’s a powerful stirring and emotional sensation that one can feel. From the birth of a child to a beautiful sunset or a poetry or a trick. It’s not what magic is, but what magic does that makes it real and makes it beautiful. It’s a personal journey. Like Roald Dahl says, “Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
Busting myths Ask him if people always expect him to pull out rabbits out of a hat or make watches and rings disappear and what about associating magic with witches and wizards? “The anthropological interpretations of magic varies vividly across the world. In the West we have diluted magic to this trickster someone who does card tricks. Here in parts of Middle East and India and Central America and Africa, magic has much deeper connotations. So, as a performer, one has to be sensitive with the approach to the word magic. I want to dive deep into the interpretations
My dream is to base myself in Mumbai. India has always been my ek number. It’s one of my favourite places, so I would like to be based there, but very much coming to Gulf region.

INTERVIEW
From ruling the television roost to making an impact in Bollywood as an actor and director, hosting LIVE shows to now wowing on the OTT, for Rohit Bose Roy it’s been an eventful journey of 25 years in the industry. We caught up with the popular star who was in Dubai for the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night. And in a candid conversation with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the multi-talented actor talks about his innings on the screen and also juggling his multiple passions for directing, fitness, bikes and sneakers. YOU ARE GETTING A FANTASTIC RESPONSE FOR YOUR LATEST RELEASE SANAK… Sanak has me in a completely different role from what I’ve been doing all these years. It was difficult because Sanak is not who I am, it’s totally different from me, as in the real person that I am. So that was good. I remember I had finished shooting for it and Vikram Bhatt (filmmaker) messaged me after seeing the edit and he said in one line that this is quite simply my best so far. I was taken aback because I didn’t think much of my portrayal, but then the reactions started pouring in and they’re the kinds I got during Kaabil. That’s overwhelming. WITH KAABIL YOU’D REALLY PUSHED THE ENVELOPE… Yes and for me that was a big thing because I was playing a negative character for the first time in my life and people were like ki yeh kya kiya Rohit ne. Even Hrithik (Roshan) had tweeted saying, it must be difficult for a good boy to play a bad boy so good. I’d say that was my top role because I’ve never been a bad boy. IT’S BEEN MORE THAN 25 YEARS SINCE YOUR DEBUT AS RISHABH MALHOTRA IN SWABHIMAAN, AND WHILE THAT STILL REMAINS ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC CHARACTERS ON INDIAN TELEVISION, YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN SLOTTED IN AN IMAGE… Yes, and I’m thankful for that. I have always maintained that Rishabh Malhotra is like my Gabbar Singh and Swabhimaan my Sholay. I can never repeat, replicate or even match up to that kind of fandom or adulation that I received in the first year of my life. It’s been 25 years and people still remember Rishabh Malhotra. But I’ve been fortunate that people also recognized me as Rohit Bose Roy and not just as that particular character. A lot of TV actors become lost in becoming the characters they play. They end up being recognized for that show and that particular character. Thankfully that hasn’t happened to me. TODAY WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO A PROJECT? Now the only thing that attracts me to a project as an actor is that I have to drive that project in some way. I cannot do it just for the heck of being a part of that project. I have to be enthused about it, my role, and even about the people I am working with. Secondly, for all practical reasons, making money is important too. It’s not like I’m born with a silver spoon or I’ve earned enough to retire, so I have to go to work, be practical and make money. But this reason never transcends the first one, my main reason primarily always remains that I have to be excited about what I’m doing. YOU ARE AN ACTOR, DIRECTOR, HOST… WHAT ROLE EXCITES YOU THE MOST? Being a director. And if I could just direct and do nothing else I would be the happiest. ANYTHING IN THE PIPELINE? There are certain projects, but it’s too early to talk about them. There’s a new show that I’m doing and it has Ronit (brother and actor, Ronit Bose Roy) and me acting in it too, so it’s going to be our first time that both of us are going to be sharing screen space on OTT. We both have done TV and cinema and now we’re doing it on OTT. It’s a fantastic script about a lawyer and a cop who are brothers and I am playing the cop while Ronit is playing the lawyer. People have been waiting to see him back as a lawyer since Adaalat, but this character
is completely different from what he played in Adaalat. This guy is a lot more urban, upscale, south Mumbai, kind of lawyer. But it’ll again be very interesting because he’ll be seen in a light he’s never been seen before. Apart from this, I’m also looking forward to the release of my next film Forensic with Vikrant Massey and Radhika Apte. YOU ARE ALSO QUITE A DOTING DAD TO YOUR DAUGHTER KIARA? To see a smile on my daughter’s face is a greater achievement than any award. So her happiness, Manasi’s (wife, actress Manasi Joshi Roy) happiness and my mom’s happiness... That’s what my real life is about. As far as my work is concerned, of course it is something that I really enjoy and I want to make my family happy with the work I do, but that is really not the be all and end all of my existence. For me my family is more important… There are a lot of sacrifices that have to be made by actors. Whoever you see on the top positions, they all have made a lot of sacrifices to be superstars. I unfortunately could never make those sacrifices. I would run away from shootings to attend my four-year-old daughter’s school annual day. Whether she saw me or not was unimportant but for those 30 seconds that she came on stage, I wanted to see her. For me those memories are far better than even winning the National Award. So they’ve always been priority. But now Kiara has gone abroad for her higher education, Manasi is back to work, so that leaves me with my only focus and that is to act and direct and hopefully produce soon. So now my second phase is going to be more about myself and my work. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PASSION FOR BIKES… My next bike ride is in Sikkim, which is supposed to be one of the most picturesque rides in the world. Two years ago, I did the fifth most dangerous ride in the world, when December 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 31

INTERVIEW I went to Leh Ladakh, Manali, Lahaul and Spiti. For almost 20 kms we had to ride through knee-deep slush with constant water falling from the mountains. A small mistake, and you could be down the cliff. But completing that route successfully gave me a lot of confidence. YOU ARE QUITE A SNEAKER-HEAD TOO… I hope Manasi doesn’t see this (laughs). Because she kills me each time I order a pair of shoes. And I have just ordered another pair. YOU ARE ALSO QUITE DISCIPLINED ABOUT YOUR WORKOUT REGIME, IN FACT MORE NOW THAN YOU HAD BEEN IN YOUR INITIAL YEARS. Again it boils down to the fact that I still have to make a living. I cannot rest on my past laurels, I have to keep reinventing myself, keep looking for good roles, I have to keep competing with people like Tiger Shroff and Varun Dhawan. I have competed with Hrithik Roshan and John Abraham, now it’s time to take on the younger boys (laughs). As an actor a little bit of vanity is good. Also I’m an Aries which is the childside so in our minds we never grow up. I think I need a body to match that right (laughs). HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK ON YOUR JOURNEY? My journey has had more downs than ups. It’s a wonder that I’m still around and getting to play a hero on OTT. I have had successes that I can count on the fingers of one hand, especially when it comes to movies. But I’m still here playing the roles that I played 25 years back, so something has been done right. The fact is that main shiddat se kaam karta hoon. But having said that, I wish I could have changed a few things about my earlier days when it all went to my head. Swabhimaan created a monster in my head which I could never shake, the kind of response I got was so out there that a small town boy obviously got affected. And I had never seen that kind of success, that kind of high, and have somebody like a Mahesh Bhatt who puts you on a pedestal. And what happens is that you start thinking that anything and everything you do will work, but it’s not going to work unless the projects are good. And that’s what happened to me. I signed all the wrong films, I worked with wrong directors, scripts I had not liked. My roles were good, but in totality the films were crap. But even then, nobody ever said that I was bad in a show or a film. So I guess that held me in good stead. But if I could change something about the past that would be the one thing I would change. And that’s what I would advise the newcomers too. Don’t let the initial success go to your head because it’s all transient. Nothing is permanent. Thankfully, like success even my failure was not constant. Like I failed for 10 years and I came back with a Kaabil. So things are good since. Workwise, I’ve done all four mediums and here I am today, at the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night and it’s great to be here with so many achievers. 32 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST December 2021

From 1800 Rupees to a million dollars An inspiring tale of financial freedom! The Founder CEO, LPH Financial Services, Leena Parwani is a well-known name in the insurance industry. Having established her strong presence in a male-dominated sector, Leena firmly believes in financial freedom and the keys to it - working smart, working intelligently and careful planning TELL US ABOUT YOUR START IN THE INDUSTRY… I started working in 1998 for a company in India. It was a full-time job, my first salary being 1,800 INR. When I came to Dubai, my first job paid me 1800 AED per month. From there, to a million dollar company, it’s been quite a journey! CAN YOU SHARE A FAVORITE MEMORY FROM YOUR EARLY CAREER DAYS? When it comes to a favorite memory, I would say that my entire journey from my first job to this million-dollar business has been a fantastic memory in itself. Coming from a small village in India, it was a hard time for me to stand up as a leading financial advisor in Dubai. Inspite of my great work ethic and industry knowledge, I was fired from three jobs before starting this company. But I didn’t hold myself back. I am grateful for all those jobs as after getting fired from those, I went on to ultimately chase my dreams. Today, when I look back, I find that I did make the right decisions at the right time in my life. WHAT DO YOU MOST LIKE ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION? Since I started my insurance firm, I have been working with some of the most influential personalities in Dubai. Again, my clientele is majorly from India, Dubai, Iran, Tanzania, Oman, and Britain. And over the time, I have gained expertise in estate protection especially in addressing the
third-generation syndrome i.e., planning the wealth and assets with a view to save them for three generations to come. This is the best thing that I like about my career. HOW DID YOU BALANCE YOUR JOB WITH YOUR VOLUNTEER WORK, HOBBIES, AND OTHER INTERESTS? DID THE BALANCE CHANGE OVER TIME? I would like to mention here that work-life balance has not been that big an issue in my life. Thanks to my time management skills. I am very particular about my time. I strongly believe in the “work while you work, and play while you play” concept. Post work hours, I spend time with my kids. I teach them to be humble. And I myself have worked on being very punctual yet humble and knowledgeable enough to help people around me effortlessly. I might say, it was never an easy task, but I managed to bring this balance early in my life. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WISH YOU HAD DONE DIFFERENTLY IN YOUR CAREER? ARE THERE ANY JOB OPPORTUNITIES OR CAREERS YOU WOULD HAVE LIKED TO EXPLORE? No, I am grateful for everything that I have received so far. I think I had the strength to make the maximum out of every opportunity that I came across in my life. This kept me going without any dissatisfaction or unfulfilled expectations from life. WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO A YOUNG ASPIRANT ENTERING YOUR FIELD? Young people, I would say, are smart enough to bring remarkable revolutions in the industry. I would like to advise them about strengthening their work ethic, and time management. I personally am a person who sticks to my words. And this has helped me over time. So, this is one simple yet important skill that you should definitely develop throughout your career. Lastly, always be humble. No matter how high you rise, always be grounded WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM? I have to say, the people in my network, my friends, my clients, I’ve been lucky and grateful to come across them. I draw a lot of inspiration from the people I work with. And that’s the reason why I started my podcast six months ago. ‘Leena Parwani’s Audio Experience’ has hosted entrepreneurs, business-owners, successful women, sports celebrities and many more inspiring people across the globe. It’s been going great and I look at it as a way of contributing to the society, by inspiring young entrepreneurs. December 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 37

Refreshingly
Rakhi She is a force of nature and you never know the curveball she’ll throw at you to shock you out of your wits– all done in good humour and with a kind heart that encompasses and loves everybody. A name that resonates with comedy, gimmicks, drama and controversy. Rakhi Sawant engulfs you with her love and warmth and says it like it is. She entertained the crowds at the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night and made quite a few stars shake a leg. Manju Ramanan chats up with her. WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOU WANT TO BE IN THE BUSINESS OF ENTERTAINMENT? I come from a poor family, with a police background and my family has been orthodox. Girls are married off early but I wanted to make a name for myself and not go the domestic route of cooking for my family and raising kids. I wanted to be an actor and entered the industry. I have acting and dancing within me and Bollywood was a natural destination. THE 5 LESSONS YOU LEARNT ON THE WAY. Work hard, prepare yourself to be part of the Bollywood industry, work honestly, do not cheat people, do not lie, pray to God every day and do not fear anyone ever. Your faith in God will keep you away from harm and no one can defeat you. Don’t be afraid to fail. Keep trying because one day you will succeed.

THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING BOLD AND OUTSPOKEN The sun and the moon don’t stop giving me light if I am outspoken. Only people mind me being upfront and frank. God has made all of us similar but people judge each other. They judge how a woman should be and how a man should behave. I believe in God Almighty and follow his laws and when I tell the truth, it becomes a controversy. But I won’t stop telling the truth.
I TRUST EVERYONE EASILY AND THAT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM I AM TRYING TO FIX
WHEN DID YOU FIRST MEET SALMAN KHAN AND HOW HAS HE BEEN A GUIDING PART OF YOUR LIFE. I met Salman Khan 12 years ago and have done about 8-9 seasons of Bigg Boss. I have also been part of Dus Ka Dum and his stage shows. I have a great rapport and relationship with Salman Khan and his family. But I am an SRK discovery. He chose me when I auditioned for and gave birth to my career in the movies and then I was guided by Mr Salman Khan. How lucky am I? All the big stars respect me because they feel I am God’s child, truthful and upfront. HOW DID YOU LIKE DUBAI AND THE FILMFARE ME ACHIEVERS NIGHT. I am planning to do lots of work in Dubai and it is the first country I know that doesn’t have fear at all. They did the Expo here, Filmfare ME Achievers Night happened here all because of the vision and benevolence of its ruler. H; H is afraid of no one. When other countries were scared, Dubai opened its arms to people. Shootings happen here, events are always glamorous here and people live a normal life despite the pandemic. I loved the Filmfare ME Achievers Night and I will come again next year to entertain the people of Dubai. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE ROLES? I have shot more than 80 videos and 25 films, done lots of work on reality TV shows for the last 15 years. Salman Khan told me that I am the reality show queen and the TRP queen and I am all about entertainment. From Bigg Boss to Koffee with Karan, I have been on most shows. I want to now do a comedy show on TV. WHAT ARE YOUR BEST QUALITIES? I treat everyone the same – old, young, rich, poor even those I don’t know. Also, I forgive others easily because God has forgiven my sins. I have no enemies and everyone loves me. December 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 39

Art is Not just the pandemic, musician, composer, actor and artiste, Ali Zafar has battled a storm in his personal life as well. Manju Ramanan catches us with him on his next innings in music, nurturing music talent, content creation and his big step into the world of spirituality.
What brings you to Dubai? Several things actually. The Pakistan Expo is happening within the Dubai Expo and it has been designed by my teacher from college Rashid Rana. Also, I got a message from the PMO’s office that I was nominated for the Golden visa. And I had to shoot for an ad as well as my new music video. All this included a vacation with my family. We haven’t stepped out of home for the last two years and Dubai is the best place to take a break. When a film unit hires you, you take away many jobs because you are multi-talented? (Laughs) Yes, I am a musician, a composer, I write my lyrics, sketch, act and have been a film producer to Teefa in Trouble that I co-wrote as well. Do you miss working in Bollywood? I love working in Mumbai and it is sad that we cannot. SRK is one of the nicest people I have met in Bollywood and so was Alia Bhatt with who I had some scenes in Love you Zindagi. Also, Ranveer Singh, Govinda jee I worked with in Kill Dil, with Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan in Mere Brother ki Dulhan,
with Aditi Rao Hydari in London, Paris, New York and with Yami Gautam in Total Siyappa, Taapsee Pannu in Chashme Buddor. I have the fondest memories of my work in the Mumbai film industry. What about the OTT space? That is a game changer. OTT platforms give you the freedom of creativity and you are not restricted by region and what kind of content you will create. When creative freedom is so strong, the young will explore more genres and areas and expand all boundaries. I am in the process of writing something for OTT. What about music? My main focus is music. I have a new album titled Husn and I launched Lightingale Records as well. I have started this initiative to nurture raw talent and give them a platform to perform. I am trying to create an infrastructure for the youth of the country to hone their music skills. When I was 18 years old and started my music career, I struggled for five years to release my first track Channo. I had no one to guide me or mentor me. Through this initiative I want to give back to the world of music and mentor and

lead talent to the right destination. We have an inhouse team that looks out for talent and sometimes talents approach us. I will be collaborating with them too in the near future. I have already done Allay with 12-year-old Urooj Fatima and Laila o Laila as well. This is the era of independent music and luckily, we don’t need a film to carry our music into the world anymore. There was a time every music composer wanted to be a Bollywood singer but I feel music is a stronger identity than any film industry.
Are your children inclined towards the arts ? Alyza my daughter is excited about painting and music and my son Azaan is Zen like Buddha. Put your fame, money and creativity one side to see your kids smile and laugh has no comparison. We are programmed that the meaning of success is something else. It boils down to the quality of human relationships. The pandemic reminded us of that. Look at the animal kingdom during the pandemic – the earth benefitted, the trees and animals did. We are just a part of that eco-system.
In the post-pandemic era, do you see change in terms of renewed compassion? If one is to zoom out, I see chaos before organization. We are still in the post chaotic chaos and it will still take a little while to settle down. When things get worse, they tend to get better. There will be more collaborations and art will transcend all limits and I hope it happens sooner than later. As for compassion, I think, today it is a reverse of compassion. Every kid today has his/her own gadget. From community spaces, we have migrated to virtual areas for meeting and interacting with each other. People are absorbed by their image of self, their likes and comments on social media, their fans rather than real life conversation. You have developed a deep interest in philosophy and meditation? I have always been lenient towards brain sciences and spirituality and now I have ventured deeper. My wife Ayesha is an NLP practitioner and I do practice the science of meditation and manifestation. We are all vibrational beings at the end of the day and we are about frequencies. We are all limitless energy bounded by limited human perception. Music is about frequencies and that is why it is closest to spirituality. That is why a song becomes that much attached to you. You do a movie as an actor, it has a limited shelf life, but a song and a thought and an idea always remain forever. So, my focus has really been on music and writing songs as well leaning more towards philosophy than human emotions like love. I paint too. I gifted my dad a life size painting on his birthday. The last few years have been tough on you. How did you cope? My spirituality helped me and if I wasn’t in that space and see things from another perspective I couldn’t have survived it. You can only fight it with a divine force. Every adversity imparts you with the opportunity to be stronger and when you are seeking that spiritual elevation, you will be crushed again and again. I thank all those experiences like I would thank my teachers. December 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 41

INTERVIEW
Smells like success! What started in 2016 with a simple vision of trying to bring niche and
Mr. Mahsam Raza - Perfumer & CEO, The Dua Group
expensive fragrances to the masses has within a short span of time blossomed into reality for the Dua Group. Perfumer & CEO, The Dua Group, Mr Mahsam Raza and The Group’s Vice President Branding & Business Development, Mr Syed Ali talk to Aakanksha Naval-Shetye about what makes their brand unique and a favourite with consumers WHAT WAS YOUR VISION WHEN YOU FIRST LAUNCHED THE DUA BRAND AS A COMPANY? Mr Mahsam Raza: The vision was simple - to create niche quality fragrances for the masses without the exuberant price tags, so everyone can access high quality fragrances without breaking the bank. WHY PERFUMES? WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO PLUNGE INTO THIS PARTICULAR PRODUCT? Mr Mahsam: I’ve been a collector and a fragrance enthusiast since the age of 10; my dad was a fragrance aficionado so the passion and love for perfumes runs in my blood. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS HELPED YOU ACHIEVE SO MUCH SUCCESS WITHIN A SHORT SPAN OF TIME? Mr Mahsam: Honesty, integrity, and the genuine passion for perfumes would be the key things because of which I would say we have been so successful. WHAT MAKES YOUR PERFUMES SO UNIQUE? Mr Mahsam: Our fragrances are made using the best raw materials today’s perfumery world has to offer and in addition to that we have developed our own proprietary molecules which help in toning down the astringent effects of alcohol in fragrances and add a skin moisturising affect because of which our fragrances last and project longer.
CAN YOU TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS MODEL? Mr Syed Ali: Our business model is simple. We ask our growing fan base what they would like next in terms of smells and we make it happen. Making custom and personalized fragrances for individuals and businesses is what we excel at. LOOKING BACK, WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT IN BECOMING ONE OF THE LEADING BRANDS IN THE INDUSTRY? Mr Mahsam: I would say getting our fragrances to more and more people has been the most challenging aspect. But we’ve grown organically, simply by word of mouth. Once you try our fragrances, you’ll never think of fragrances the same. WHAT’S BEEN THE ONE CONSTANT BELIEF THAT YOU SWEAR BY AS AN ACE BUSINESSMAN? Mr Mahsam: We as a company firmly believe in working for our customers; we’re even starting to do bespoke for our fan base and provide them with the opportunity to bottle their creativity. Being a customer-oriented fragrance company is what we aim for and have achieved. YOU ARE ALSO A VERY SOCIALLY CONSCIENTIOUS COMPANY. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR ENDEAVORS FOR CHARITY. Mr Ali: We firmly believe in giving back to the society and take this humanitarian approach very seriously. Five per cent profits of all our sales from any division is solely for the purpose of charity, especially for orphans. We believe in educating orphans so that one child who grows up to be successful can change the life of their whole family. WHAT IS THE WAY FORWARD FOR THE THE DUA GROUP? Mr Ali: Dua is headed in many directions, from doing celebrity fragrances to doing bespoke for our customers to developing a skin care range with the same belief that organic and luxury skin care should be for the masses. We’re also working on a model where customers can come online and cherry pick their favorite fragrance notes and we’ll put their vision together for a minimal cost for their wedding and events. This is yet another different approach than doing bespokes.

Twinning with
Success!
They are the original spice girls. They are young, raring to go and have infused new energy to their dad Harish Tahiliani’s flourishing spice business. Manju Ramanan speaks to the twins, Heena Tahiliani, Head of Business Development, Arab India Spices and Dimple Tahiliani, Head of Operations, Arab India Spices on the blueprint of their future. WHEN DID YOU JOIN YOUR FATHER’S BUSINESS AND WHY? Heena: A year and a half ago. Unlike Dimple who has always known she wanted to join the family business, at first, this wasn’t what I had planned for myself. I wanted to be a lawyer so post my BBA, I wanted to pursue a GDL degree from London. But Covid knocked and in my quest to keep busy I joined the business. But now that it’s been 1.5 years, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I got an opportunity and could pair it well with insight and meaningful learnings about the business. I love what I do and look forward to what new lessons and knowledge each day is going to bring to me. WHAT ARE THE VERTICALS EACH OF YOU HANDLE AND HOW DO YOU BRING ABOUT CHANGE IN IT? Heena: I look after the retail segment within the company and oversee all the marketing, market intelligence, branding, social media marketing and the new initiative projects across the organization. The market dynamics have been very versatile and are now evolving to be much better. We are also in midst of diversifying the products range / offerings and pushing tech use in any possible manner and bringing in synergies to the table. Dimple: I look after the operations and HORECA (Hotel/Restaurant Catering) division within the company and I would love to incorporate more aspects of sustainability within the business framework. COVID brought challenges but we found the solutions and I am glad that each solution we worked on paired well for the company. DO YOU HAVE AN E COMMERCE PLATFORM? HOW DO YOU PLAN TO EXPAND IT? Dimple: Holding an e-commerce platform was never a plan since we are already present on major e-commerce platforms running in the UAE. Our products are available on several online platforms that cater to B to C and B to B customer bases. Some of them being Noon daily, Amazon and Talabat. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FATHER MENTORING THE TWO OF YOU IN BUSINESS MATTERS? 44 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST December 2021
Heena: I find myself lucky enough to be able to have my mentor alongside throughout. Despite his busy schedule, he always makes time to guide us and advice on which business opportunities would be good for us to take on, to meet our long-term goals and we always take time out to brainstorm them. Apart from that, his biggest advice to us has always been to play fair, play smart, take risks and most importantly respect time. WOMEN IN THE WORKFORCE ARE AN ASSET COMMENT? Heena: I don’t see employees being an asset to the company as something that is gender dependent. To me, any capable employee is an asset. However, it is essential to have a balanced workforce. Women and men naturally have different experiences which lead to different perspectives and therefore, in my opinion, the more diverse a workplace is, the more unique number of ideas come together which will ultimately aid in the sustainability and growth of any organization. HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR WORK SPACE FRIENDLIER TO WOMEN STAFF? Dimple: For any change to take place, there must be an acceptance in the overall corporate culture. Some of the few ways we ensure that we do so is, by giving equal opportunity and making gender diversity a high priority within the company. Today women in our organization are accelerating their growth at par with men and I won’t be surprised if this equation gets in favor of women sooner than later. HOW DID YOU MANAGE WORK DURING THE PANDEMIC AND WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS? Dimple: Perhaps for the first time I could practically realize and understand the meaning of “necessity is the mother of invention”. Businesses never realized
the necessity of hygiene as much as they did, during COVID days. We, being one of the critical partners in the food supply chain, had to reinvent the production, processing, packaging and transport mechanism in order to achieve best hygiene and timely delivery. Despite any possible challenges during peak COVID days, we ensured uninterrupted food supply. I am proud to share that today our robust supply chain has brought renewed confidence in our capabilities and that has reflected in new customer additions ever since. WHO ARE YOUR ROLE MODELS AND WHY? Heena: Of course, my parents. I am in awe of how disciplined, ambitious and hardworking both my parents are. Apart from them I also adore Roshni Nadar Malhotra, CEO of HCL enterprises and Falguni Nayar, CEO of Nykaa for their contribution to the corporate world and setting the tone for all women trying to make a name in their respective fields. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS OF EXPANSION OVER THE NEXT 5 YEARS? Dimple: Our goal is to become the leading brands in retail and one stop shop for the HORECA industry within UAE for grains, condiments and ready to cook categories. We have come a long way and we see a longer journey alongside these opportunities. We expect to double our turnover over the next 5 years and penetrate into new geographies. WHAT IS YOUR ME-TIME LIKE? Heena: Meditation, reading, journaling, listening to a podcast, cooking a healthy meal and going on a run are my favourite ways to unwind and just be by myself. Also, I love living with a sound healer, aka my sister. Doing sound healing sessions with her are so grounding and calming. December 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 45

INTERVIEW
Blissful
Impact! Seema Gupta, Founder and Managing Director of Orgabliss tells Aakanksha Naval-Shetye about their eco-friendly and sustainable products for women’s intimate health and personal hygiene and the importance of gifting women a blissful organic life obnoxious behavior, a lot of hesitance before I could finally get a ‘YES’ from influencers. To be precise, my main struggle was to convince people and make them understand that menstrual cycles are nothing to be ashamed of; rather we all should be more cautious about it in order to give our daughters a better tomorrow.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO COME UP WITH ORGABLISS? The chemicals in our conventional sanitary napkins are way too harmful that can even lead to deadly diseases like cancer. When I found that out, it was scary. This was the time when one of my relatives recommended me to use organic sanitary products. In no time, I felt a comfortable difference. This change was my inspiration to make a better future for women, to offer them with a life that’s healthy and hygienic. Hence, the birth of Orgabliss, gifting women with a blissfully organic life. WHAT’S THE USP OF YOUR PRODUCT? WHAT SETS IT APART FROM THE OTHER BRANDS AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET? The 3-in-1 anion chip is the one that makes our product oneof-a-kind, not only compared to the chemical-rich sanitary napkins, but also from other organic brands. This chip helps in generating fresh oxygen around our intimate area, thus cleansing the uterus, boosting metabolism, and easing cramps. This is the primary reason why women don’t feel bloated or itchy. In addition, the Japanese SAP technology integrated in our products can soak up to 150 ml of liquid. It can keep them dry for longer than any other brands available in the market. You can say that our products are the perfect combination of nature and advancement. While we use 100 per cent organic cotton, our products come with magnetism and far IR that keep the intimate area balanced with enough oxygen. This technology also kills bacteria, keeping a check on diseases like UTI, PCOS, itchiness, irritation, and even cancer. WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHALLENGES YOU’VE HAD TO FACE IN CREATING A NICHE FOR YOUR BRAND? Menstruation was and is still considered a taboo. It’s like we are forbidden to talk about this natural cycle openly and freely, even though we are very well aware of the same. So, the acceptance was the biggest challenge. There was a lot of
HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THOSE? Firstly, I was patient with the dominant mentality. I never argued to people; I started talking to them while trying to change their way of thinking by questioning them and showing them facts. And secondly, what helped me the most in reaching out to people, was the cooperation from gynecologists. When I explained them about Orgabliss and how it can help eliminate a bunch of menstrual issues, they were not only quick to accept, but understand as well. Their practical experience dealing with women gave me the upper hand of spreading the knowledge of health and hygiene. It takes us one step forward in life; hence, we should be more vigilant and learn how to keep ourselves safe with the right choices. WHAT IS THE ONE ADVICE YOU’D LIKE TO GIVE TO WOMEN WHEN IT COMES TO MENSTRUAL HEALTH? The only advice that I have for my fellow women friends out there is, “Do not be ignorant about your menstrual health.” Just like drinking water, eating, and sleeping are necessities in our lives, so is menstrual health. You should protect it with the right choice and proper hygiene. And no, chemical pads are so not the solution. WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT SINCE YOU STARTED? My biggest achievement has to be the “Thank You’s” I get from our users. It becomes a pleasure when women come to me and tell me how they have overcome the discomfort by using Orgabliss. When I hear that itchiness, bloating, irritation, wetness, and all the other period-issues are dealt with, I get the feeling of attainment that cannot be compared to anything. I am literally grateful for all the faith and love I have been receiving. WHAT’S THE VISION GOING AHEAD? I have the dream of reaching every woman around every corner of the world, make them aware about the importance of menstrual health, let them know how harmful these chemical pads are and help them switch to organic so that they can live a better tomorrow.

INTERVIEW
The Elixir of Life Mr. Alexander van 't Riet, CEO - Mai Dubai LLC, the fastest growing bottled water company in the region and the largest solar-powered company in the Middle East, speaks to Manju Ramanan on sustainability, responsibility towards the environment and setting the highest quality of international standards as a global brand
TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY WITH MAI DUBAI AND HOW DID YOU ENSURE THAT IT IS THE FASTEST GROWING BOTTLED WATER COMPANY IN THE REGION? On a personal level, my journey with Mai Dubai has been exciting and professionally rewarding. I have been fortunate to be in a company that nurtures and values its employees and believes that its greatest strength is the workforce. Mai Dubai cultivates a work environment that is anchored on unity and respect, and this is what makes it inspiring for me. In return, our teams are motivated, inspired, and passionate in driving the overall business growth. My previous work experiences with small and large companies prepared me to help Mai Dubai reach its goals. I was fortunate to have a comprehensive background in sales, marketing, operations, as well as in general management. Leveraging all these, and having an equally experienced staff, allows Mai Dubai to move towards sustained profitable growth and expansion. As we continue to grow, we give utmost attention to enhancing our processes and systems, making them more robust, tested and right-sized for the future. This means investing in health and safety, security and of course product quality. We leverage technology and continuously seek methods to upskill our employees through trainings, both off and on the job. Recently we marked a milestone with the launch of the fastest bottled water production line in the Asia, Oceania, and Africa (AOA) region which can produce 86,000 bottles an hour; that is about 23 bottles per second. A truly remarkable piece of equipment engineering. And looking ahead, with our success, I am confident to claim that we might need more capacity in the future. FROM 2012 TO 2021, WHAT ARE THE DEVELOPMENTS ATTAINED BY BRAND MAI DUBAI? We have reached several landmarks since our founding in December 2012. In March 2014, our business operations and commercial production officially began, and from that, our progress has been unstoppable. Since then, we have managed to become one of the leading bottled drinking water companies in the UAE. We successfully positioned Mai Dubai as a regional brand adhering to the highest quality of international standards, as well as in providing exemplary consumer experience. We
continuously innovate products. One of our innovative products is our Zero Sodium Alkaline water which is produced at our Al Qudra factory in Dubai. We launched this with healthy hydration in mind. We also developed attractive and entertaining packaging (bottles with Tom & Jerry characters), designed to encourage children to drink water instead of sugary drinks. I also want to highlight our sustainability journey as this is a very important component of what we do and relevant to future generations. Mai Dubai is known for having the second-largest solar roof installation in the world and it is the largest solarpowered company in the Middle East. In 2020, we reduced our overall carbon footprint by activating the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology across our facilities. We became a net-zero energy consumer and even supplied the Dubai power grid in 2020 with our rooftop solar PVs generated a total of 30,245,073 kWh while our overall operations consumed only 26,054,859 kWh. Today, Mai Dubai has 52,086 solar panels installed at our facility and our head office is LEED-certified. All these efforts, I am proud to say are recognized by consumers and helped Mai Dubai become successful and a household name not only in the UAE but in several global markets as well. HOW DO YOU ASSURE SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND RESPONSIBILITY AS A BOTTLED WATER COMPANY? Social and environmental responsibilities are part of our ethos since day one. We value and recognize the importance of being responsible as we can positively impact society and the environment. Aside from our renewable energy source mentioned previously, we also practice proper waste segregation and waste management in our factory. We believe that waging war on waste is good and can help create a domino effect in responsible resource management. One of the environmental challenges the industry is facing is the misconception around the use of PET bottles and its ecological impacts. We are very aware on environmental matters and help educate around environmental impacts. One element is that we highlight that PET bottles are 100 per cent recyclable with low environmental impact. We also partner with companies like DGrade, a manufacturer of eco-friendly
52 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST December 2021

28/11/2021 9:26 AM
PET based clothing, to promote recycling and raise awareness about responsible waste management. As long term partners, we have managed to encourage and engage the many members of the community in various sustainability programs that promote reducing, reusing, and recycling. Through these programs, plastic bottles are collected and transformed into flakes and fibers, and subsequently converted into yarn to be used to produce clothing items such as T-shirts. In addition, we are a proud and active supporter of DGrade’s Simply Bottle programme aimed at increasing recycling rates of plastic water bottles among schools and universities. We believe that through this initiative, we are encouraging the younger generation to participate in environmental protection programs while instilling in them the importance of sustainability. We are committed to adopting responsible practices across our operations and we are proactive in mitigating and reducing any possible environmental and social impacts of our business. Sustainability has been, and will always be, a part of our key strategies. WHAT INNOVATIONS HAS YOUR TEAM DEPLOYED TO MAXIMIZE YOUR REACH AND SALES IN THE REGION? The evolving trends and changing needs and preferences of our consumers have always encouraged us to leverage innovation. With strong focus on innovation, we know we have a competitive advantage, and we are steps ahead of the game. For instance, our ‘Zero-Sodium Alkaline Water’ is the first product of its kind in the world. This is a game changer in the market, marking another milestone in our product innovation with highly positive market response. The product combines the benefits of sodium free composition with the goodness of alkalinity aspects of water. Our operations are also all about automation and innovations starting from the arrival of raw material in the warehouses till the loading of product batches onto the trucks for dispatch, ensuring 100 per cent hands-free operations. We integrate Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Warehouse Management System (WMS) platforms to ensure smart and smooth intra-logistics. Further, our highly automated industrial facility is powered by our solar roof installation, which contributes to reducing 10,000MTs of carbon emissions annually. All these innovations are necessary in advancing our sustainability efforts and provide safe and efficient products and services. We seek to be innovative while remaining socially and environmentally responsible. HOW HAS YOUR EXTENSIVE INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE ACROSS ASIA, EUROPE, AND AMERICA AIDED YOUR CAREER PATH IN THE ARAB WORLD? It helps a lot that my work experience spans from creative labels to flexible packaging, from sales, marketing and operational roles to exposures to many cultures around the world. The studies and relevant on the job training prepared me to become a general manager in multinationals and private equity companies alike. All these roles and experiences have contributed to my deeper understanding of the industry, the way I work with various team members, as well as of the responsibilities expected from me. HOW EFFECTIVELY HAVE YOU USED SOCIAL MEDIA TO ADDRESS THE LARGER AUDIENCE ACROSS THE WORLD? We live in a digital era wherein social media has become a powerful communication tool with widespread influence over cities and remote areas. We also believe in the significance of maintaining engagement and connection with our market, so we leverage the power of social media to sustain our engagement as well as further widen our customer base. Mai Dubai has strategically leveraged social media through our ‘Mai Dubai, My choice’ campaign. We tapped social media influencers in our brand film and outdoor campaigns wherein they managed to make the campaign viral. By using influencers, we effectively mixed traditional platforms with social media,
Mr. Alexander van ‘t Riet with his family
and were able to reach a broader audience and increase our engagement. Campaigns such as this go beyond the product promotion; it also creates positive messages using the most powerful communication tool today- social media. WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR MARKETING CAMPAIGNS? We have been in charge of some major marketing projects, which have included some notable collaborations. Apart from the premise of brand positioning, our primary focus is on delivering the message of hydration and fitness to our consumers and stakeholders. We’ve been a title sponsor of the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon for three years and have been delighted about the changing perception of the local community towards healthy lifestyle. We also extended our association as official hydration partners with the cricket extravaganza - IPL Twenty 20 (T20) event – this year. On top of that, other collaborations include Dubai Duty Free Tennis and Top Golf. While our ongoing brand campaign ‘Mai Dubai, My Choice’ revolves around the choice and the strong loyalty of the Mai Dubai Consumer, we devised a cohesive messaging that strives to highlight everything that makes the UAE unique and distinct. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK “IN PURSUIT OF CHOCOLATE, A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY.” In Pursuit of Chocolate, A Journey of Discovery, is a story about my family transitioning from an expat life in Austria to an on-the-go lifestyle, traveling 106,557 kilometres around the globe. It delves on a 246 days captivating journey with lighthearted narrative about places, events, and people. I think the backpacking life has been in the minds of many, but only a few truly take the leap. The book talks about the irrational decision to grab four backpacks and embark on a travel across the world as a family while doing volunteer work on the way. The main message is about the pursuit of happiness and the sense and non-sense of volunteering. It gives a glimpse into the beauty and the not-so-nice elements of the world we live in. Above all, it shows that a trip like that is an education in itself as well as gives an illustration of the amazing resilience and accomplishments of mankind. I invite everyone to grab a copy and journey along with the characters. December 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 53

INTERVIEW
The Perfect Fit!
Casting director Kavish Sinha speaks to Manju Ramanan on how casting for films or OTT for him is an intuitive process. Right from casting Kajol in her first ever web serial Tribhanga to working with Rani Mukerji in Mrs Chatterjee versus Norway, Sinha tells Manju Ramanan, how empathy is an important quality in his line of work

WHEN DID YOU REALISE YOUR TALENT FOR CASTING? I would never watch a film or show without watching the end credits. I love people and I’m blessed with a memory where I’d mostly remember names of all actors. In a sudden shift in career, I joined YRF as a casting assistant. It was there I realized I was cut out for this. Frankly, casting is more about imagination and astuteness than talent. If you can figure who and what’s right for a part, you’d be good at this. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PROJECT? My first project was a feature film for YRF called FAN on which I worked as an assistant. That’s where I learnt the basics of casting under my mentor Shanoo Sharma. When I forayed independently, my first projects were Shaadi Boys, a web-series for Voot and Laakhon Mein Ek, a web- series for Amazon Prime Video, both were cast concurrently. HOW DID THE PANDEMIC WORK FOR YOU? It worked wonders for me professionally. It might sound strange but I’ve had the best work come to me during the lockdown. I’ve not had a single day off. My team and I were constantly working during the lockdowns. The results of which are here already and many more to come.
5 BASICS OF BEING A CASTING DIRECTOR
Instinct, Intuition, Innovativeness, Empathy and an Aptitude to see beyond Appearances. TELL US ABOUT “THE EMPIRE”. HOW DID YOU ARRIVE TO THE BASICS CAST? The creator of the show Nikkhil Advani asked me to read the first book in the series to understand the world. Being an avid and imaginative reader, I could already start picturing my actors in those words. We had to create a universe which none of us have personally been a part of. It was history, it was grandeur, it was all mega. From the looks to the language, we were particular that we cannot cut corners with this casting. Actors had a lot of responsibility in making The Empire how it was envisioned and I had no choice than to get the best talents on board. TRIBHANGA LOOKED LIKE A REAL FAMILY OF PEOPLE HOW DID YOU MANAGE THAT CAST? Tribhanga was a supremely special project. It was Kajol’s debut on OTT and you want to put all your heart and soul to create a world which can live up to her presence on screen. My director Renuka Shahane, who also happens to be one of my most favourite humans had a simple brief for casting - good actors, real looks and real emotions. We stuck to the Maharashtrian setup for the film. From Vaibhav Tatwawadi to Arha and Antra who played younger Kajol, all were chosen with extreme precision. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PROJECTS? I just did Mumbai Diaries 26/11 that releases on Amazon Prime Video. There’s Those Pricey Thakur Girls and Rudra for Disney+Hotstar and Rocket Boys for Sony Liv. I have feature films like Satyamev Jayate 2 with John Abraham, Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway with Rani Mukherjee Chopra and Blurr with Taapsee Pannu, that will also release in some time. WHAT ARE THE 5 BASICS OF BEING A CASTING DIRECTOR? Instinct, intuition, innovativeness, empathy and an aptitude to see beyond appearances. December 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 55

INTERVIEW
Saluting the Spirit of the UAE Declared as the Year of the 50th, 2021 has been seeing celebrations on in full swing as UAE completes 50 glorious years since the Union of the seven Emirates on December 2, 1971. The UAE was founded under the visionary leadership of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, known as the Father of the Nation. He also became the Federation’s first President. December 2 has since then come to be celebrated as UAE’s National Day and marks the unification of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al-Khaimah, Ajman, Umm alQuwain and Fujairah under one federation
The largest of these emirates is Abu Dhabi which is also the capital of the UAE. The National Day is marked with grand celebrations including fireworks, air shows, military processions, with the national flag being displayed all across the country. And as the Nation steps into its Golden Jubilee this year, there is much that the country has to celebrate and be proud of. A melting pot of diverse nationalities, cultures and ethnic groups, the country has come to represent a beautiful blend of the ancient with the latest in modern advancements. From being known for its pearl trading to progressing as one of the most cosmopolitan nations, the country has evolved rapidly to emerge as a global hotspot in the 21st century.
While Sharjah was named the “Cultural Capital of the Arab World” by UNESCO in 1998, in 2009 the UAE became the first country in the Middle East to host the FIFA Club World Cup tournament. The country also houses some of the most marvelous modern architectural wonders including museums and monuments. In fact, Dubai has emerged as one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations boasting of the second most 5 star hotels in the world as well as housing the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. Dubai also ranks high when it comes to safety of women. The country has been lauded worldwide for its effective handling of the recent global pandemic and their vaccination programs. 56 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST December 2021

عملي القادم سيكون No Land’s Man، Tiku weds Sheru، Heropanti 2و ،Sangeenأنا متشوق لكل هذه األعمال.
