I

t is the right weather for all lovebirds to express their love. There is a nip in the air, there are occasional rains, the mellow winter sun gives Dubai a golden glow and it is tourist season. Despite the pandemic around us, the month of February is plastered across town as being the unofficial month of professing, expressing and showing love. And who better than the handsome and eligible bachelor and music composer Amaal Mallik on cover, to tell us about his love interests and his ideal girl. Known for his soul-stirring melodies, Amaal has quite a bit on his platter in 2022 including composing for the upcoming Radhe Shyam starring superstar Prabhas. Amaal performed at the Filmfare Middle East Achiever’s Night in October despite and injured foot and displayed his astute professionalism and love for music. Check out his cover story where he talks about all things love, his grand-father, the legendary Sardar Mallik and his famous sibling Armaan Mallik. This edition seems to lean towards music and musicians and a whole lot of them were in Dubai. Music composer turned singer, Sheykhar Ravjiani promoted his single Rang by Sufi Score here. He told us how he composed a song every day during the pandemic to keep the artistic fire within him alive and Rang struck a chord with audiences worldwide. Check out, Benny Dayal’s interview where he speaks about how his 12 th class teacher who was also a numerologist predicted that he would “stumble upon,” A R Rahman in Chennai one day. Dayal performed at the AR Rahman show at the Dubai Expo and displayed his versatility at performing in different languages. I met up with Amrish Puri’s grandson, the soft-spoken and respectful Vardhan Puri, opposite whom, Kaveri Kapur, Shekhar Kapur’s daughter is making her film debut. The film is directed by Kunal Kohli and titled Bobby aur Rishi ki Love Story. Pakistani heartthrob, the young, dashing and multi-talented Ahad Raza Mir met me in Dubai and spoke about his childhood fascination for Hrithik Roshan movies. Mir grew up in Canada and learnt Urdu when he decided to make his career in Pakistan – he tells us about the process where he weathered people laughing at him and dismissing him off, till he won them over. As you leaf through the local stories that dedicate itself to food reviews following the Filmfare ME F & B Night due this month, check out my interview with Dubai based designer, stylist and artiste, Varoin Marwah. A known name in Dubai, Varoin has designed for the biggest names in Bollywood and the Arab world – Ranveer Singh, Mohammed Ramadan and more. Varoin designed Amaal Malik’s outfit you see on cover. As tourists flock Dubai, it is the season of love and we celebrate it with abandon and happiness. Party safe and remember to be masked up well! Love is in the Air!

It’s February, the month of Love with Valentine’s Day around the corner! That time of the year when you start planning that perfect date, hunt for a perfect gift… think of all ways to make the day special for your loved one. While we do agree that love is something that we ought to celebrate daily in our lives, isn’t it beautiful to make that celebration special in some way and worth the smile and happiness you see on the face of your partner! And we believe that for the singles, it should be no different… You don’t have to wait up for that special one to turn up and celebrate you… Why not do it for yourself, after all a little bit of pampering hurt no one, right! Well, the month has all of us excited for another reason too! We at Filmfare Middle East will be hosting our very first FFME F&B Night that celebrates excellence in the culinary world and honours the best in the food and hospitality industry. Announced last month, we are thrilled to see the excitement and buzz it has created across the city. And the VOTING’S LIVE now, so don’t miss the chance to make your favourites win! Go and check out more about it on our website: www.filmfaremiddleeast.com and get clicking. Talk about clicks, I must confess that navigating through all the choices available on the remotes of our TVs these days can be a bit overwhelming… I’m sure many of you would agree when I say this. To be honest, I love the choices, but it can be exasperating too, especially when there’s so much to watch out there. No complaints though… What’s really interesting is to see how the projection of romance, the idea of love has been evolving over the years in entertainment and the pop culture. Realism has seeped in gallantly in our love stories, unconventional is the key, the romantic fairy-tales are being redefined, the rules of love are being rewritten… and yet strangely, there’s still a comfort in revisiting the classics, those old-school love stories where undying love’s still the order of the day. Well, I guess for all our modern ideas of love and independence, good ol’ romance and a little mush is what our hearts will always beat for! So bring on the love...

Happy Valentines’ Day

keep loving & stay sassy

a bird’s-eye view of show town’s happenings

IS HRITHIK ROSHAN DOING A FILM WITH HOLLYWOOD HOTTIE SAMANTHA LOCKWOOD? Samantha Lockwood treated the Bollywood fans with some pictures from her meet up with Roshan. Samantha Hrithik Roshan herself is a renowned American actor who has starred in movies like Shoot The Hero and Hawaii Five-0. Recently, she treated her Instagram family with three pictures from the meet. Hrithik looked dashing as he sported a pair of black pants with a white T-shirt, whereas Samantha looked cheerful in a colourful ensemble. The pictures showed them holding up Shaka signs, one where she flexed her biceps and another where Hrithik and Samantha were lost in deep conversation. She captioned the pictures, “Fun to meet this actor who also comes from a movie family, loves action and Hawaii… superstar @hrithikroshan.”

TIGER SHROFF HURTS HIS EYE WHILE SHOOTING FOR GANAPATH Tiger Shroff is known for his extreme action sequences and stunts. The actor is not known to hold back his punches. Apart from physical strain, such stunts can cause injuries if one is not careful. Tiger seems to have been a victim of one such incident. The actor took to his social media to share a picture of an eye injury he incurred during the shoot of his next film, Ganapath. Tiger clicked the picture on the set and captioned it, “S*** happens (hot face and ninja emoji) #ganapath final countdown.” He chose Play hard by David Guetta ft. NeYo and Akon as the background music for this post.

SAMANTHA TALKS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH Samantha attended the launch ceremony of the Psychiatry At Your Doorstep initiative of Roshini Trust and Datla Foundation recently. She highlighted the importance of seeking help for mental health issues during the event. At the event, Samantha said, “We live in an increasingly stressful world where there is so much focus, whether it is on social media, on portraying perfect lives. It is becoming more difficult to speak about our weaknesses, our pain, our anxiety because there is so much focus… Being very active on social media, I noticed the stress on portraying perfect lives. No one’s life is perfect, trust me.” She further added, “I think it is time for people like us, people like me most definitely, to speak about not just the glitz and glamour but also the pain, the suffering, the lows. It is normal for all of us to go through that, it is too normal to talk about it and it is normal to ask for help.” Samantha gave her own example and accepted that ‘talking to others’ helped her pass through the ‘difficult time’ of her life. She said, “I have gone through a difficult time in my life and asked for help. I have sought help from my friends and counsellors and that has made a huge difference in my life. If I am sitting here today, strong and ready for the next part of my life, it is not just because I was strong but it is because many people around me helped me to be strong.” The actress separated from her husband Naga Chaitanya, last October. 8 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST February 2022

ALI FAZAL, RICHA CHADHA TO TIE THE KNOT THIS YEAR

expert advice DR. SANA SAJAN Director of American Aesthetic Medical Center

VENEERS V/S LUMINEERS

Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal have been dating for a while now and the latest rumour doing the rounds is that they will tie the knot in March. A source close to the actors has told a leading news portal that Ali Fazal and Richa Chadha have decided to hold a summer wedding. According to media reports, the two will celebrate their wedding in Mumbai and Delhi and that it will be attended by close family and friends. The lovebirds supposedly met on the sets of Fukrey in 2012 and formed a close friendship that turned into something more. The couple also has a production house together which is called Pushing Buttons Studio. Rumour has it that the two were all set to tie the knot in April last year but had to postpone the date due to the ongoing pandemic.

NORA FATEHI IS A PROUD AFRICAN NORA FATEHI HAILS FROM NORTH AFRICA AND SHE’S PROUD OF HER ROOTS. HER LATEST DANCE NUMBER, DANCE MERI RANI REFLECTS HER PRIDE. SHE PRESENTS A BLEND OF CULTURES AND DANCE MOVES FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF AFRICA LIKE NIGERIA, SENGAL, GHANA…REVEALING THE INSPIRATION BEHIND HER LOOK, SHE STATED, “GROWING UP, I WAS SURROUNDED BY BEAUTIFUL AFRICAN WOMEN, BE IT MY FAMILY MEMBERS, MY FRIENDS, MY MOTHER, WHO WERE BLESSED WITH BEAUTIFUL CURLY HAIR. I WAS ALWAYS IN AWE OF THE VARIETY OF BEAUT Y WE HAVE IN AFRICA FROM DIFFERENT SHADES OF SKIN TO DIFFERENT TEXTURES OF HAIR. AND I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO CELEBRATE THAT AS AN ARTISTE. THE AFRICAN IN ME ALWAYS WANTED TO CELEBRATE AFRO BEAUTY AND AFRO DANCE ON A BIG SCALE THROUGH MY ART. Veneers are a treatment option, dentists use, to cover discolored or broken teeth so they appear glossy and white. Traditionally, veneers are made of porcelain material. They are cosmetic coatings for your natural teeth and resistant to staining and most appropriate in cases where teeth appear to be yellowed or brown, or showing signs of decay or staining. Your dentist will make a mold of your prepared teeth and make you temporary acrylic veneers. A dental laboratory will fabricate a custom set of porcelain veneers from the mold. Veneers take approximately 2 to 4 weeks to be made and your dentist will then cement the veneers to your prepared teeth using a special bonding solution. Traditional veneers can last 8 to 10 years on average, with high success rates up to 20 years. Lumineers are a brand of veneers that take less preparation and advanced dental work than traditional veneers. They are made of “ultra-thin” laminate and are more translucent than veneers. You don’t have to grind your teeth to thin them before application. Your dentist will have a customized set of Lumineers made for your specific treatment needs. They last between 10 and 20 years

Crowns are another type of tooth covering that cover an entire tooth, as opposed to veneers, which only cover the front of your teeth. A crown is a treatment for a tooth that’s severely damaged. A veneer may not be able to fully cover a tooth that’s broken down from cavities, badly positioned, or extremely discolored.

KEY TAKEAWAYS IF YOU’RE SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT YOUR SMILE, THERE MAY BE OTHER OPTIONS YOU WANT TO TRY FIRST, SUCH AS BRACES, ALIGNERS, OR TEETH WHITENING. IF YOU’RE SERIOUS ABOUT VENEERS, TALK TO YOUR DENTIST. THEY CAN ADVISE YOU ABOUT THE BEST COURSE OF TREATMENT FOR YOUR MOUTH — AND YOUR BUDGET

e v Lo O

ver the years, the super talented and young composer Amaal Mallik and I have

had several interactions. That it becomes an interview is incidental. Because the man who has composed over 70 romantic songs in a career spanning seven plus years is a great conversationalist. He’s self-depreciating, self-critical, hungry to learn more, explore unconquered vistas in rhythm and music, funny,

knowledgeable and upholds a tradition of talent, blessed by his grandfather, the legendary Sardar Mallik. Amaal Mallik talks on love, longing, heart-break, envy – all of which reflect in his music and choice of music. What are the songs you associate with love? If you look at my own songs, the song Roke na Ruke Naina was composed out of real heart-break. I liked someone and it didn’t work out. It was made out of a real feeling. This is my song that I associate with love. Not that I am saying that love is sad but this song was composed out of a real state of mind. What was your first heartbreak like and how did you deal with it? My first heartbreak in life was when I was 16 years old. Actually, I broke my own heart. I didn’t tell the girl that I liked her and someone else did before me. Maybe later in life I told her. But at that time, on that day, I had a lot of pizza! (Laughs) What attracts you about a woman? I think, a lot of people would assume that it would be good looks for me. That may be a bonus. I would be very attracted to someone who is real, A lot of people try to portray that they are real but aren’t. I dig someone who is herself and real. Someone who is comfortable in her own space and her own skin and voices an opinion without caring,

someone with a mind of her own and being sincere about who she is . Whenever, I make friends, it is important for me to see sincerity in conversation. I can see through fakeness. That is a problem. Are you in a relationship? No, I am single and working very hard. What are the songs that you are currently waiting to launch? As a musician, every artiste feels that every song has a special value. My parents heard my forthcoming song from Radhe Shyam and they think it is my most special song. We were all on a drive yesterday and mom said that this is the song that I want my son to be known for. We are in lockdown mode again and I am hoping that when the film releases, this song gets its rightful place under the sun. Like the film is multilingual, the songs would also be released in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada. The songs you sing to yourself on a bad day? I listen to Shaame Malang si. It is multilayered. It helps you with the journey within and takes you on an imaginary road February 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 11

trip while you are still sitting in your drawing room. Your mom’s favourite song of yours? The upcoming one from Radhe Shyam. Out of what is released, she really likes Tere Mere from Chef. Are there songs that have made you envious? Yes, there are three of them. Pritam Da’s ‘Tum Se Hi’ from ‘Jab We Met’ Sachin Jigar’s ‘Jeena Jeena Kaise Jeena” and Rahman sir’s “Naadan Parinday.” Naadan Parinday is so much from our generation and marries braj bhasha with rock. I always listen to these three songs and wish that I had composed them. I am happy to admit it and I am always going to admit it. Whose concert would you never miss? I missed Lucky Ali’s concert in Goa. I haven’t been to an AR Rahman concert and I look forward to it. I want to watch the great score master Hans Zimmer’s work. I am a proper fan at these concerts. Musically I don’t try to break it down then and there. I go there as a listener and have fun. Even if my friends take me to watch DJs perform, I don’t immediately start analyzing – that I will figure out anyway. I try and connect to the mood and the soul of the artiste performing. I hadn’t listened to this particular artiste and when I felt a connection to his work, I went to watch the artiste perform live. How do you see the happy deluge of independent film music? It is fantastic. I admire Dua Lipa for her ability to speak for a whole generation of girls. Billie Ellish and her brother Finneas who worked with Hans Zimmer for James Bond are favourites. I enjoy listening to the work of Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber grows better through the years. From the Indian musicians, Armaan’s doing quite well, so are Prateek Kuhad, Malavika Manoj and others. We have all these talents. People tell Armaan that he is giving hope to them and now that they too can try and achieve, what he did. What is your favourite love story, onscreen and offscreen? There are many. One of them is Serendipity. But I really like Blue Valentine, that is a beautiful love story. Even Titanic is epic and Avatar too. As far as Indian cinema is concerned, any film of SRK is

great. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge is great but I am undecided between DDLJ and Kal Ho Na Ho. How responsible do you have to be towards fans since you are a big public figure? I send my posts to a lawyer. (laughs). Today you don’t know if you will offend someone. I was brash at one time. Now I have my own respectful way of giving back. I saw the kind of love I got from my fans and altered what I post. Some of my fans are 10-12 years of age and their parents know that they are my fans. Initially I would post photos of me smoking and some of them commented ‘please don’t do that.’ I heard them and never posted such photos. How do you deal with anger and rejection? Rejection is a daily process. People think it is easy once you make a name for yourself in the film industry. Sometimes a song is rejected six months after it has been okayed. A lot of things happen today and there are many options and composers and few manage to make the cut. Even now, several successful singers and composers are pitching for films. Producers are not contractually bound to work with us. Even if

a composer gives his 100 percent, it might be rejected for several reasons. I used to get upset earlier. I wouldn’t step out and would spoil my mood. But eventually I learnt to deal with it. It would anger me in the past that a song was snatched from me. Now I feel that I can use the time to chill, spend time with my dog Handsome, my family and work on my music. I don’t chase anymore. I let projects come to me. Even if I get three small films in a year, I am happy. Whatever presents itself to me, I do that. Do you find music closest to divinity? Completely. Music and painting are closest to God. For me, music is even closer, not to take away from any other form of art. I have great respect for musicians. We can wake up with a song buzzing inside our head and compose it. You cannot teach that to anyone. Musicians create from thin air, create a melody from nothing. Tell us about your grandad’s influence to your work? Quite unbelievably, today is his birthday. He would have been 97 years old. We had a fantastic grand-dad grandson relationship

despite the generation gap. I was with him from 5 years to 14 years of age. He would sit facing the window, watch the sunset as he played jazz on the keyboard and hum some Hindustani classical music. I was very lucky to be living with him. Though I am trained in western classical music and Trinity college, the classical side of my music has permeated through him. I was watching his music at home and my relationship with this great music composer who was also my grandfather was solely about music. In 2005 when Veer Zaara released and people took to Madan Mohan jee ‘s music, he was very keen to record his music too. He was his contemporary. He would share with me his dream of creating music but he passed away when I was fourteen. I didn’t know anything at that time. I wish I knew how to produce music and make him sing and put it out there. But he told my dad that both his sons are gifted and he needs to look after them. He found something unique in me and Armaan and wanted us to pursue music to take his legacy forward. Which is why, my song Mai Rahoon ya Naa Rahoon is a tribute form the 14 year- old me to my grand-father. What is your ideal love story? I wish I could sing my song from Radhe Shyam. Out of all the romantic songs I have made - this somehow beats it all with one simple emotion. It is a forever love story. It has Roke Na Ruke and the Mai Rahoon emotion all in one. It has a little shade of pain, a little bit of melancholy. The perfect love story for me is the one that stays forever. We usually say that the best love stories are the ones that stand the test of time. Any tips to deal with an artist’s block? Just when I got back from Dubai in November, I got an artist’s block. I had fractured my foot in Dubai and in India it was a homecoming holiday. I haven’t composed anything for the last 2-3 months. I tried once or twice but I was getting monotonous. Are you critical and judge yourself? I actually laugh at myself and tell myself that you haven’t worked hard. I fight with myself and reprimand myself nicely. But then the composer in me comes forth and manages the situation. I am a Gemini but both sides of me are innocent and sweet. 14 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST February 2022

We just announced my upcoming love anthem sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh for the upcoming Bachchan Pandey. Penned by Kumaar, it is a heartfelt composition. I have collaborated with Shreya, Arijit and Kumaar individually and the songs have been chartbusters. This is the time the four of us will be joining hands for a song. I am really excited about my next song from Radhe Shyam and so are my fans. I am collaborating with Prabhas for the first time.

Samantha went the fusion way in a beautifully handcrafted Anamika Khanna blazer set. The single share co-ord, layered with the vibrant blazer was a winner on the awards night. The South beauty looked stunning and was far removed from her character Raji from The Family Man 2. Konkona Sen Sharma wore a beautiful weave from Maku Textiles. Monochromatic with earthy notes and a very soft nude make-up, Konkona looked like a sight to behold on the red carpet. Huma Qureshi manifested the Black Lady by dressing up like her. She turned up in a custom noir classic wrap gown by Aniket Satam. A neat high braid and the smokey makeup took this simple yet effective look to the finishing line. Taapsee Pannu’s dress caught attention for a lot of reasons. Apart from just looking stunning on the actor, this Ashwin Thiyagarajan number was cycled from brocade scraps. Sustainability and style at its best. Tamannaah Bhatia took to the red carpet of the MyGlamm Filmfare OTT Awards with a futuristic twist. Opting for a Dolce & Gabbana faux metallic dress, Tamannaah’s experiment with this unconventional look paid off well. She looked gorgeous as hell in it.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui announced that he wore the same Khanijo suit for the Emmy’s red carpet but now that he wore it for Filmfare, it’s going to be all over Google and rightly so. This all-black look deserves all the recognition it can get. Jaideep Ahlawat lived up to his sharp but casual vibe in a midnight-blue suit that he paired with a black tee and white and red sneakers.

ushrratt Bharuccha has always hit the bulls-eye at the box office with her light-hearted comedies like Pyaar ka Punchnama, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, and Dream Girl, amongst others. However, the year 2021 got to see a completely new facet of the actress as she aced in an array of versatile and intense roles – first in Ajeeb Daastaans and then in the horror flick Chhorii that created quite a buzz and raked in much appreciation from audience and critics alike. In fact, the success of the film has goaded the makers to work on a sequel with Nushrratt once again in the lead. As we catch up with the Bollywood star for an exclusive chat, she tells Aakanksha Naval-Shetye her process of choosing a project and reveals why Chhorii has been her most challenging film yet!

You’ve garnered much appreciation and praise for Chhorii that premiered on Amazon Prime Video. It was clearly a challenging role, but what drew you to it in the first place? Yes, it was challenging. I think first of all, the very idea of the film stuck with me, it was something that I instinctively wanted to do and be a part of. These kind of survival stories have got such a fighting spirit and have got such strength, I’d love essaying such characters. I also love watching such stories. They kind of hit the right chords right from the start. Then there was Vishal Sir (director Vishal Furia). I had worked with him on another project earlier and I knew that he has a great vision and understanding of films. I had hoped to work with him someday and when this came along, I immediately said a yes to it, that’s it.

have been able to bring mine alive in an uninfluenced sphere. So I chose not to see hers, and just do my version of the film and do my take of it, make my own Sakshi, be my own character, and that was fun. What’s been the takeaway from this film? I think I changed and evolved quite a lot as an actor, because there was so much happening to this girl in the film that

You’ve had an interesting career graph… But recently we are seeing you do more intense roles. Has that been a conscious shift towards doing such films? I’ve never had a vision as such of wanting to do a certain kind of film, so no it’s not like I chose to carve a path like this. I’ve loved doing everything that I’ve done so far… Dream Girl, Pyaar ka Punchnama… If those films are made today, I’d be doing those too. So it’s not like I chose one genre over another. It’s just that these films came my way and they’re just such strong inspiring and full of heart films, that I agreed immediately. My sensibilities have always been about wanting to do such kind of films too, but the offers never came. Now that they are coming, I’m doing them. And I understand that when you see them they look like more serious films but as an actor, I’ve put in the same kind of effort in every kind of role that I did. So for me the mount of prep and the intensity is always the same, it’s just that you see me in a different role. Are you a fan of the horror genre? Oh yes, I love horror. If there’s anything releasing in the genre, then I’d be the first one watching it. But I also get scared, so I watch it in the day, and then I watch a lighthearted comedy or an animated children’s film so that I can forget the horror that I just saw (laughs). Chhorii is the remake of the 2017 Marathi film Lapachhapi. So had you seen the original ahead of the shoot? No, I’d not. See what happens with a performance that’s on celluloid is that it’s that actress’ interpretation of the role and the character. If I see that, I might get restricted with it, I will feel closed by that vision, and her imagination. But as Nushrratt I have my own imagination and vision of the character, so if I’d seen hers, I wouldn’t February 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 25

INTERVIEW

What is the real Nushrratt like? A bit of me is in every character that I have done. But I feel I am a mad person who can’t not experience things in life, not live it to the fullest! Like if I’m on a diet but I want to eat something then I will eat that… I will not deny myself that joy. Later on, I will work out extra to burn off that fat but then I will have it at that moment. Also I think my zest for living the life and truly living it, is what makes me ‘me’. If someone says no way I can do it, I’ll be the first person to do it. I never start with a no! I pack my life with so much, I want to be able to experience so much, so that’s who I am. What’s the craziest thing you have done? Shooting the way I have been shooting, I never thought I’d be able to do this. I had sprained my leg earlier while shooting for Janhit Mein Jaari and I couldn’t stand, but I didn’t want to stall the film’s shoot, and I turned up and told the team that I will do it, but to be prepared for me to shoot accordingly, and I had two Assistant Directors holding me by the waist while I hobbled on one leg and completed the shoot. These things that I end up doing surprise me, but also give me confidence that I can do this, you put me through fire and I will come out if it. Tell us more about your upcoming projects… Hurdang is ready for release. Then there’s Ram Setu, Janhit Mein Jaari, another film with Luv Films Productions, so a couple of releases.

These things that I end up doing surprise me, but also give me confidence that I can do this, you put me through fire and I will come out if it

to constantly be in that emotion it took a lot of mental and emotional focus. Also being a mother, I’m not one, but then to do a space that is unreal for me and do it with conviction was so challenging, that it kept me on my toes. So I was constantly working on myself, and I don’t think there’s a moment where I think that I was lax about being the character. So this role has been more challenging as compared to others? 120 per cent, it has been by far the most challenging film I’ve ever done. Has your process of choosing your films changed in all these years since you first made your screen debut more than a decade ago? I think my process of picking the film is still the same, that’s not changed at all. I read the story or hear a narration and then I think from the audience’s point of view. If as an audience, the script grabs my attention, or has kept me hooked on then I consider the story, and I want to do it. But what has changed is the fact, that now I do have to consider factors like have I done a similar role earlier and the fact that I have watched so many films and seen so much different kind of content on screen, that now I have understood that does this in the true sense of it reflect anything interesting. Like will it add to a layer for me as an actor, explore a new emotion, showcase a new side of me… So that understanding is new.

You’ve completely made it on your own as a credible name in the industry. Do you have any rules that you follow? I do have many rules… Like I have stopped getting bothered or bogged down by the reality, if a person doesn’t want to work with me then there’s no reason why. I don’t want to go there, similarly, if I don’t work for a film, then I don’t. I don’t sit and ponder over the whys. What the industry has really taught me is not to take myself too seriously, to not get affected. There will be successes and failures, there will be things getting easy and sometimes it will be tough. There are no reasons and you can’t be a reason for it all. So, I’ve stopped victimizing myself, like why me! And I’ve made that the mantra, that I’m here today, I may not be tomorrow… and that’s okay. Are you happy with the kind of roles coming your way? I’m very happy, even with the next three films that I have, I can’t wait to get on the sets and start shooting for it. I’m waiting to bring the characters onscreen. From box office numbers to appreciation from critics, what is success to you… All of that is a part of the workings of the film industry, the business of a film is so much more than the film that it’s a hit. It gives the producer the money to invest back once again, encourage more actors, invest in new stories, and give them a chance to make a film again, so it’s a true growth of sorts. Success does play an important part in making this path for actors, to venture on. When you talk about critical acclaim, that is what we look for growth. Take the bad and take the good and use it positively. Don’t let the good get to the head and don’t let the bad get to your heart. Balance that and use all of that constructively to work on yourself to build as an actor and grow from there. Negative feedback or positive, I believe in growing from it. What’s your take on the OTT? That’s very exciting, it’s a huge thing for us. The point of making a film is to reach out to as many people as possible and with an OTT platform your film reaches to a huge diaspora and so many countries that’s amazing. It’s a huge boost to films like Chhorii that are aiming to reach as many an audience as possible.

Superstar Salman Khan’s rumoured ladylove, Iulia has made Mumbai her home, where she is busy with her docu-series Beyond the Star, Bollywood movies, music videos and singles… She was recently in Dubai where she walked the ramp as the showstopper at the Fashion Week 2021. I caught up with Iulia backstage, where looking gorgeous in a royal blue Varoin Marwah creation, she met me with a warm hug and her ever-charming smile. INTERVIEW Tell us about your Dubai experience! Well, I love Dubai. It’s like my third home after Romania and Mumbai and I come here very often. It’s an extension of India for me because I have so many friends here, I feel really welcome and also there are so many amazing things to do.

news anchor which was a different experience for me, being a journalist in a way. And then I hosted Dancing with the Stars. Then I started singing in India, which is again totally different. I feel everyone should find their calling. We have so many facets as a person and it’s so beautiful to explore them and find who you are through these experiences.

You were the showstopper at the Fashion Week 2021… Varoin Marwah is a very good designer and a lovely person too. I loved the message of his collection, that no matter what life would be, it will always move upwards and onwards. The message was one of the reasons that made me very happy to walk the ramp as the showstopper for his new collection.

And now there’s Bollywood too? To be honest, I never thought that I will do movies in India, that was never the plan. Even initially when I received the acting offers, I just refused them. But then this friend came with a really beautiful story, and I said okay, let me try it. Even then, it was never with the thought that I want to have a career in Bollywood as an actor. But I love acting too so for me, it’s just another side of me acting, singing hosting, and if I have beautiful projects coming my way, well, I’d do them, I don’t see limiting myself. Also, today there are so many different stories and platforms especially with the OTT, the world has opened up for an artiste. There are so many opportunities for everyone, so I don’t think, there are any limitations at all for anyone.

Moving to India was a big move for you, how has the experience been since? I came to India with an open heart and a lot of love, willing to understand the culture, to know the people, the places. And I’ve been lucky enough to meet beautiful, amazing people around me who have welcomed me with so much warmth, so for me it’s been a beautiful experience. I’m so grateful that I had a chance to live in another country and that country is India. It has made me grow and evolve as a person and that’s a beautiful thing for me. You’re an actor, a host, singer… what do you enjoy the most? I don’t know… All I suppose (laughs). But I would say I love the LIVE shows when I connect directly with the audience and I feel that exchange of energy and that’s amazing, if you are singing, dancing, performing or if you are acting on stage because I have done theatre as well, been in a musical, so that was an incredible experience and nothing can beat that because it’s about energy, it’s about love, it’s about the instant feedback that you get. I feel so connected and that’s also the best part of my work. I don’t even call it work per se, it’s more about passion, and you enjoy it so much that it doesn’t feel like you’re working. Nothing better than doing what you love… Yes, absolutely. I think it’s a blessing and I’m blessed enough to do what I like since I was a teenager. I started as a model at 16, then at 19 I started my TV career as a

Are you more comfortable with Hindi? Yes, I recorded recently and there’s definitely been a progression, as I realized I could record faster now that I have a better grip of words and better pronunciation. It’s a little difficult when you are a foreigner to get the right nuances, so it’s work in progress but I’m more comfortable today. What are your upcoming projects? We are still shooting for Beyond the Star. Then there are some songs coming, music videos and singles, and we are in discussions for a web-series too. Then there is Prem Soni’s Laila Manju that we shot already and the movie is ready for release. So yes, there are many beautiful projects happening and I’m looking forward to all of them. Your docu-series Beyond the Star chronicles Salman Khan’s journey to superstardom. Tell us more about it… We are still shooting for it, but it’s an incredible experience and a journey for me. Every day I’m getting to know a person through different angles with a new perspective, so that’s interesting.

You have known Salman for a long time now, but when you’re presenting him in a docu-series, how do you draw the line between his personal life of what can be shown to the viewers and what can’t? Yes, I know because the curiosity is very high! The thing is that we wanted to know the star through everyone’s perspective and cover all aspects of his persona, his personal life, the professional life… everything that his brand means. I’m interviewing the people who’ve been with him, seen his journey, helped him grow… So yes, you’ll find out many things BTS secretly kept in the series! It’s so incredible to speak with his friends and find out how Salman was in his childhood, because we are covering the whole journey – from him being a little boy in Bandra to now when he’s such a big star, the Bhai of Nation, so we are covering everything. We have witnessed his whole journey and I wanted the story to be inspirational and not just a glamour driven portrayal. I want people to understand that beyond the glamour of the star’s life, there are ups and downs and difficult moments and there are struggles, so it’s important to have certain people right there for you to lift you up, to give you that kind of support and we are talking about all the people who are around him, his team, his family, his friends, those people who have made him actually who he is. Because at the end, we are a sum of the people that we’ve met and we’ve learnt from. What’s the most special thing you learned from Salman’s life? Oh, many things, but the most important thing is that you have to be special in your real life to become very special in professional life, for everyone to love you so much. I understood that your energy and what you are, your personality, will transcend and break the screen and make the people love you or dislike you. So, I think the kind of person you are in the end, especially after so long, that is what will make an impact on your career and on everyone’s life in the end. And this is the one thing that I have noticed is that he has done a lot of good in this life and I think all those blessings are coming back. And they were coming back in all these years, so yes, it’s about who you truly are in the end, that gives you success or not! Will you be making similar docu-series featuring other stars too? Yes. When we initially conceptualized the docuseries, it wasn’t keeping Salman in mind. That just happened and it was incredible that we could have him to start the series with, because he is one of the biggest stars in the country, people are interested in his whole aura and his whole life, so that was wonderful for the team to start with. But this format can be applied to any success story because it’s all about a journey. So of course we are planning to do it with other big actors and sports people, and other people who we have a lot to learn from, not just from showbiz, they’ll be stories of success that people can learn something from, be inspired, get motivated, add values to their lives, to learn the way out in those low moments, to find what can give you that kind of strength to help you lift yourself up and move forward.

I was actually planning to visit the Expo 2020 Dubai. I heard it’s amazing and it’s so beautiful to see so many countries being represented there. One of my dreams is to travel the world. So going to Expo is the thing to do, you can know so much about different cultures, it’s like a teaser of all the amazing countries I’ve been hoping to visit. February 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 29

or OTT star Akshay Oberoi, fearless is the way when it comes to choosing roles that have made the filmmakers look beyond his chocolate hero looks to cast him in roles that are unconventional in every sense of the word. From debuting as a romantic hero to playing antagonist and characters with grey shades with a flair and then exploring romcom once again with Dil Bekaraar, his acting journey’s also come a full circle! Your screen choices have been very unpredictable and versatile, always surprising viewers, be it the looks or the characters! It has been intentional. I think everyone looks for their USP, mine has always been to try and surprise the audience with different roles and be as versatile as I can possibly be, do a large gambit of things. What has always excited me is the actual acting bit of it, so I try and search for a different character each time to surprise audiences, including changing my looks drastically for each role. What attracts you to a project? Many things… Could be the director, the script, the character… but it has to strike a chord creatively and get me excited. My process of choosing is usually instinctive, like most of the work I’ve done so far. Like within five minutes of the hearing, even before I read the script I almost immediately know if it’s something I’m going to do. If I have a good feeling, then I know I should do it. But also when I’m scared of doing something… that attracts me even more. I feel like this is already a very scary industry and a scary profession, so you might as well put everything at risk. I feel that every time it seems like a gamble, it just might be a risk worth taking.

space did not open up because films were already selective, it was being made by a set of people in the industry and there were only a few big movies being made that would get you any attention. I think I have done a bunch of movies that I really liked… Pizza, Kaalakandi, Laal Rang, Gurgaon, these are good films but they just did not work because they couldn’t be positioned as per market value. The release wasn’t great or was releasing alongside a big star’s film. The OTT kind of helped save that. It got eyeballs as people did not feel the burden to go to the theatre, to buy the ticket to watch and it kind of revived our careers, so yes I mean I’m so grateful to the OTT. Among the roles you have done, which have been the most challenging ones? A lot of people would feel that it was Danish Aslam’s Flesh opposite Swara Bhaskar, but actually for me it was Dil Bekaraar. I find it easier to hide or play things behind a mask and eventually the character and make-up are so convincing that I’m able to play it better. I think when it’s bits of myself because Dylan Singh Shekhawat (Dil Bekaraar) is probably the closest to me in real life, than all the other characters I have played, that’s always hard for me… to play parts of myself.

Was it easy to shed that lover-boy image What genre do you now want to explore? considering your real looks make it easier for Comedy, please somebody come out with a comedy and I makers to slot you in romantic roles? would like to do it as it would round off my career. I think That’s exactly what was happening I have done almost all the possible initially, and I really wanted to genres except comedy. I have even go in a different direction and do done action in a film titled Junglee something interesting. I mean, with Vidyut Jammwal, but the film there were other actors doing the did not work, so I feel like comedy I’m fearless when it comes to romantic lover-boy thing much is a thing that is left. better than me. Even though my craft because I only focus that worked for me as well, but What are your upcoming on the acting, I don’t focus on I wanted to do the kind of roles projects? that you wouldn’t imagine a face Well currently I’m shooting for a the money, the success, the like mine doing, which is why I film called Cold which is a superwent ahead and did projects like natural love story directed by fame, the glamour… What gets Gurgaon, Laal Rang, Kaalakandi, Vikram Bhatt and it’s written by me out of bed each day is to Flesh, High and now that I have Mahesh Bhatt Saab. done all that, I decided to go to make fearless choices and do the romcom space and did Dil What medium do you prefer something that is scary and try Bekaraar with Habib Faisal. That’s towards movies, so as Akshay why I’m fearless when it comes to Oberoi I think I like movies better my craft because I only focus on the acting, I don’t focus on as I grew up watching movies. I think that’s when people started seeing me capable a lot of competition. I think if I could repeat life, the only of playing a negative character, an antagonist. I think the things I would work on is being better on social media and silence and the mystery the character creates on screen showing up to more events. I’m getting better at it (laughs), thanks to Shankar Raman’s beautiful direction… that kind of but I think I should have started doing it earlier. Other than changed people’s perception towards me and my work. this, any failure has only made me grow and look at things differently. Acing the

Game

Oblivious to his father’s fame in Pakistan, Ahad Raza Mir, son of actor Asif Raza Mir, grew up in Canada. He, eventually chose to follow his illustrious dad’s footsteps and pursued acting in television. Mir worked as a theater artist in Canada while studying at the University of Calgary and returned to Pakistan in 2015 and first earned recognition with the television series Sammi (2017) and became a young star much followed, lauded and admired. A man who believes in facing challenges head on, weathering it out instead of resting on legacy, learning things on his own and most of all, willing to be laughed at - this young actor schooled in the west, learnt and mastered the urdu language and acted in it too, acing the game. Ahad Raza Mir was in Dubai for the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night. Manju Ramanan catches up with the young and impressive talent from Pakistan.

N

Did you grow up on Bollywood films? ot really, because I was raised in Canada. Occasionally, mum would encourage me to watch films. I was seven years old when I saw Kaho Na Pyaar Hai and have loved Hrithik Roshan since. He could act, dance, romance and played a double role in the film. One of a decent young man and the other character, being an arrogant one. I have followed Hrithik’s career over the years and I feel that he just got better and better. He has so many facets to him. And in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, he sang too! He is fantastic to watch. And Ranbir Kapoor has impressed me too. I haven’t watched Roy and Bombay Velvet but Rockstar is my all- time favourite film and Tamasha was brilliant. It was an unusual film and I loved the way he takes us on that journey – I get to see the graph so well. Also, you know that he has worked so hard on that role. There is a base level that every actor works towards but when there is work put into a character, it shows. Someday I would like to sit with Ranbir and discuss the process. I cannot see the typical formula in his work. He is awesome. Jagga Jasoos too was so refreshing and Rocket Singh. You cannot compare any of his current work to his past work. I am waiting for Brahmastra.

Your own journey with acting has been interesting? I actually don’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be an actor. I was very lucky. When I went to school, I was good at academics but acting was something I loved. I learnt to not fight the urge to act. Then, I trained in theatre for 4-6 years and enjoyed every moment of it. Stage is for real, the rest of the mediums are hyper-real. I wasn’t aware of my dad’s legacy of acting since we were in Canada. I knew of his acting career but thought he was one of the actors. Also, I grew up in Calgary where there weren’t that many desis. When we visited Pakistan, I saw the crowds and the cheering for my dad at the airport and was shocked that he was so popular. I told him that he had a lot of explaining to do. I never knew he was this popular. How did you master Urdu? When I decided to try for work in Pakistan, I didn’t speak any Urdu. We spoke bits and pieces of Urdu at home and here I was giving auditions in Pakistan. People made fun of me and I couldn’t even communicate with my driver at one point. Needless to say, all my auditions were exceptionally bad. (Laughs). But I decided to learn Urdu and had a tutor for a week. Her teaching was bookish so I stopped and started learning on my own. For six months, I spoke no English. I watched television and surrounded myself with Urdu. And

then, the first day on it was equally challenging. People laughed at me and I was okay with it. In theatre, you learn that the biggest tool is failure. When I failed in auditions in Canada, I learnt that rejection is part of the process. It pushes you to fail but you move on right away. My first TV serial changed my life. I had my first brush with fame when I attended a college event and people went berserk calling out my name. Every star prepares for that day but for me, the transition wasn’t gradual but immediate and that sort of puzzled me. I couldn’t believe it initially. Creatively, is being on stage more satisfying than being on camera? I cannot say that. On sets these days, it is relaxing. When you are rehearsing a scene, it is different but when you are prepared, it is ok. Onstage, you are on autopilot. When you start your scene, you have to go with the flow and complete your act to a live audience. On set, you might have to give takes and retakes. When you are on set, you have to be present to that moment. You might have woken up to a bad mood and might have to perform to a completely different emotion to how you are feeling internally. Or your co-star has that moment and you have to make the best of your scene. In serials, you spend a lot of time on set waiting for your shot. Also, the shooting isn’t linear. You have to graft the whole schedule in your head – that today I am shooting the 5th act’s third scene for instance. Both mediums though are collaborative and satisfying. As for films, I just did a couple, and haven’t yet found a film that I could connect to. Are you choosy about the work you do today? I pick and choose what I do. The more success you have, you get choosier. You owe it to yourself and want to tell people of the kind of actor you are. When a script comes to me, these days, it is less about ‘we would like to do it with you’ and more about ‘what would you think you would do with this role’? That for me is exciting, challenging and participative. Can I own the role? Make it my own? Lend it my take? The participation is more important to me. I expect a lot from myself. Did you shoot during the pandemic? During the pandemic, I shot quite a bit. I did Dhoop ki Dewaar where I play an Indian in love with a Pakistani. Both our fathers are martyred soldier and what starts out as a spat, ends in love. Sajal Ali (my wife) plays my Pakistani love interest. In the series, we never meet. Also why I did it (Laughs) Set in the backdrop of IndiaPakistan conflict, the web series depicts that how peace is better than war. What about music? Half the population of Pakistan didn’t like my first song Ko Ko Korina. I am trained in string instruments. I used to love rapping when I was young and then my dad heard what I was listening to and introduced me to rock and house music. In fact, I use music as a tool to stay in my character while acting for a role. But I am a cinema guy too and would go three times a week to watch movies. There is so much fun in buying the popcorn, watch the trailer, and then discuss the film. February 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 33

At the age of 5 years you fell in love with MJ? Yes, my dad gifted me a cassette of Michael Jackson songs and MJ messed my mind. All the neurons in my brain got triggered and I started dancing soon after. He awoke a lot of creativity in me. My mother enrolled me in dance class. Only, she tricked me to join Bharatanatyam class. Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form and when I went to class I was the only boy there. I came back from class and told mom that the whole class was filled with girls. But I was apparently very good and though I was reluctant to start class, in a concert I came third. That sparked interest in me. In school, I was laughed at because I was a male dancer. I never saw one annual day in school right from kindergarten because I participated in each one of them. I was always backstage in costume and heavy make-up associated with Bharatanatyam and my friends would laugh at me. It was in high school when I started choreographing then, I was the cool guy and the go-to guy. Then it was all awesome.

Did you adapt quickly? When it comes to dance forms, ragams change but in Carnatic music, everything are on scale and it is very rigid and strict. Today everyone recognizes me for non-Carnatic music. The background helps immensely. Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam is great for children when they start it early, say the age of 4 years. The brain is fresh and you grab it quickly. Both forms teach you the nuances and you always respect the decorum. But I took that background and discovered my own world of music, and dance. What are the advantages of being multilingual? My ideal of a multilingual artist is Usha Uthup jee. I grew up watching here wondering ‘how does she do this’? I remember watching her perform in Seychelles and in her saree, jhumkas, bindi and gajras, she was singing in Creole. She is such a charitable person, you should know how much she does for the music industry? She has an awards show where she recognizes

There has to be art for people to have business. But business cannot control art.

When the ‘Dil Se,’ the album came about, that triggered you again? I was 14 years old and heard the Dil Se album by AR Rahman and it hit me. I had listened to his songs earlier but this one caught my fancy. Since I was also learning music, ARR’s music expanded my horizon. From childhood I had this longing to do something always and this song opened my mind and gave me a possibility to express myself differently. I was learning Carnatic classical music but I was a rebel. I believe that I am a juggernaut and that art cannot have any limitations. In Class 12th, I had a very cool teacher who was Mangalorean and he was good at numerology. In one of his sessions, he asked me what I planned to do after my 12th standard and I told him that I plan to go to Chennai and do music. He told me that I was a number 4 and that I would meet AR Rahman there. Golden words that came true So, from then on, it was bye to Carnatic music and hello to everything else.

the spot boys, event companies and technicians. I have performed for her events and it is a humbling experience. So I have sung in a lot of languages that include Tamil, Malayalam, Bangla, Assamese, Gujarati, Telugu and so on. The trick is to make sure that I forget my mother tongue Malayalam while singing in these languages. You can’t record with Malayalam slapped on to your forehead and connect with the soul of the language you are singing in. Look at Hariharan jee’s way of rendering ghazals. To get rid off the accent is a big deal. You need to switch on and off. Do numbers on YouTube add to the validation of a musician? I put up a motivational video recently. You cannot escape hard work and sincerity at all. Marketing gimmicks can give you the numbers and push the song. But from all this, comes negativity. Gimmicks won’t last, talent will last. You cannot be associated with a number. Art is beyond everything. There has to be art for people to have business. But business cannot control art. February 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 35

hat’s what Kirti Kulhari has been doing with each screen outing. Whether on OTT or in Bollywood, the star’s name has become synonymous with versatile roles, strong

characters and stronger performances. From Pink to URI and from Four More Shots Please to now Human, the actress has proven that on camera, she’s pure talent. And now Kirti Kulhari has trained her sights on production too. In an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the actor-producer talks about her affinity for strong characters on screen and reveals her vision as a producer 36 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST February 2022

You have come to be associated with playing very strong characters on screen. Do you organically gravitate towards such roles? Yes, I think over the years I have gravitated towards and chosen such roles. I pretty much like to do all kinds of interesting roles, so that’s always been the only criteria. But now people do associate me with certain kind of work and I get offered some really good projects too. Now I don’t have to go around looking for the kind of work that interests me. It comes my way more easily. And I get to choose better and stronger characters with every project Do you strongly identify with any of your screen characters? I identify with my characters on screen in some way or the other, at different levels, depending on the character and on the different traits of the character. So there’s no particular character that I completely identify with, but there are different characteristics of different characters that work for me. One character who I really identify with is ‘Sasha’ from Shaadisthan. Over the years, I do feel I am a lot like her and would love to be more like her. Even ‘Anjana Menon’ from Four More Shots Please, ‘Seerat Kaur’ from URI: The Surgical Strike and now Dr. Saira Sabharwal from my latest series Human. They are all great characters. And I relate to and identify with different aspects of all these various characters I play. OTT or movies, which projects get your preference? In the last couple of years OTT has kind of taken a lead over Bollywood, theatre, films, etc. But I don’t choose my projects on the basis of OTT or Bollywood. As long as the script and the character offered to me is something that excites me, I don’t care whether it’s OTT or movies. I just want to do good work. No doubt, cinema has a different appeal altogether. Seeing yourself on a big screen as an experience is incomparable, but as an actor, I think both the mediums are equally great. What makes you say yes to a project? The script, the writing, the subject, my character, how well the story is written… And, of course, the director and what is his or her vision, and how capable they are of bringing the story alive. All these things are what make me decide whether I say yes or no to a project. What would you say has been a game-changer for you in terms of success and recognition? Pink was a big game-changer for me, for sure, in terms of both success and recognition as an actor. And so was Four More Shots Please, both season one and two. Both of these projects have been really big game-changers for me, followed by many more significant projects, which have surely added to the success and recognition in between. You have been garnering a lot of accolades for Human... It feels great to be acknowledged and recognised for my work yet again, through Human. I’m extremely thrilled and happy to know that the audience could connect with my performance. Dr. Saira Sabharwal is indeed one of the most special characters I have played. I am immensely grateful to everyone who has made Human possible… my writers, directors, co-actors, the whole team and all the people who are watching and appreciating it. My heart is filled with gratitude and it feels great for sure. You have never shied away from projects with an ensemble cast… Why would I shy away? I am very comfortable being cast with others in pivotal roles with myself standing shoulder to shoulder with anybody else who is a part of the project. As an actor, I never have the insecurity of being lost. I love ensemble casts, it’s amazing when good actors come together to play the characters beautifully to make a good

watch and present strong and powerful stories for the audience to watch and enjoy. What are your upcoming projects? There is Four More Shots Please Season 3, which will probably be released in the latter half of the year. There is also a feature film, Nayeka that I just started shooting for. It’s a dark comedy thriller. No other stuff I can talk about. These projects are the highlights for the year. How do you reflect on the struggles and the highs and lows? I reflect on the struggles and the highs and lows from a very neutral and objective viewpoint. Life will always have its share of highs and lows, we have to just learn to take it all in our stride, and strive to be a better person. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters. It doesn’t matter what you go through, what is important, is the person that you become at the end of it. I’m filled with gratitude towards everything I have had to go through in my life… be it good, bad or ugly... I would always look at it with a lot of gratitude and humility in my heart. What has been the biggest challenge along the way? I think the biggest challenge has been my inner journey of dealing with conditionings and the experiences that I’ve had. The trauma left behind by the bad ones, the healing of all that trauma, the ability to stand strong in the face of difficulties and live through it, hoping for it to pass and for a newer day to come. Going through the bad times, the sadness and the pain, believing and reminding yourself that it’s all happening for a reason and there’s light at the end of the tunnel. I think all of this has been the biggest challenge. I feel it is all about overcoming your own demons. The enemy is not out there, it is unfortunately something we make within ourselves and create in our own minds. It’s not about what’s happening to you but how you deal with it and what you make of it, which can make your journey easier or tougher. Realizing all of this, the more important truths in life have been the biggest challenge but I’m so glad that I am here today, speaking about it all in a very objective way. I

want to make films that make a difference. I want to INTERVIEW

tell stories that are empowering and that haven’t

been told before. And even if they’ve been told before, I want to say them differently. I am very keen to work with new talent, good people, and truly create cinema I can be proud of.

The roles that are being written for women have undergone a radical change in the past decade. Would you say that you are here at the right time when these strong roles are out there? Yes, absolutely. I’m so grateful that I survived and stayed on to see this day and phase in my life and career, where I’m getting to do the kind of work that really excites and inspires me and others as well. It keeps me motivated all the time. In terms of storytelling too, women are being given the centerstage to lead and stories are being told about them or revolve around them, and that is a great change that’s coming into the world. It is very empowering and a welcome change that’s happening in the society where women are being considered important. Their stories are being given the kind of value and attention that they deserve. It is surely the coming of age of not just our industry, but of the world we live in, in general. I am more than happy to be a part of this revolution.

You have recently also turned a producer... Tell us more. What made KINTSUKUROI FILMS happen and what’s the vision ahead? It feels great. I have surely come a long way and it’s not very often that I have this realisation but yes, I think I have managed to survive and make a mark for myself not just in this industry but also in the hearts of people and I think it’s a big deal, something I am really proud about. I never imagined I would be a producer someday but for now, I’m happy with the fact that I am here today where I have actually taken the step to open a production house. As I embark on this new journey, I truly hope I’m able to find the right support, the right people to collaborate with and make the kind of cinema I really believe in manifesting the intention of backing unique, honest and heartfelt content. Your first production is Nayeka. Could you tell us more about the film? It’s a dark comedy thriller, written and directed by Ajaykiran Nair. It’s a film about a struggling actress who still believes she can make it big and how she gets caught in a crime and what follows is a cat and mouse chase. The story consists of a lot of madness happening with different characters with different greeds and motivations coming in way of each other… How and where it all ends is the story of Nayeka. It is something I have never done before. We have just started shooting and I am super excited about it. What kind of films would you back as a producer? While the answer to this will show in my actions with the kind of films I actually end up producing, for now I would say… I want to make films that make a difference. I want to tell stories that are empowering and that haven’t been told before. And even if they’ve been told before, I want to say them differently. I am very keen to work with new talent, good people, and truly create cinema I can be proud of. The kind of cinema everyone can connect with. 38 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST February 2022

Making a unique impression! Influencer – artiste Muhammad aka Ganook King talks to Aakanksha Naval-Shetye about his love for creating unique content and also shares tips for aspiring influencers How did you come to be such a popular influencer, how was the journey like? I’ve always been interested in creative content since a young age which has now grown into a passion to create unique and attractive videos. I started by sharing my lifestyle on my personal social media channels, that started getting very high engagement. This made me commit to my audience regularly. My efforts and passion with my content was appreciated and people started loving me. I anyway enjoy every single day creating new content and the love that I got for my content encouraged me to keep doing more and better. The social media changed my life! What keeps you inspired for content? Every video that I put out has a different story to tell that hopefully motivates people to learn something in life. The positive feedback that I get for my creative videos and the inspiring messages I receive keep me motivated too to deliver new content. As an influencer, what’s been your biggest strength? My biggest strength… always has been my audience. How do you handle the trolls? The first thing that always comes to my mind is to ignore them. Trolls are trolls, but somehow we need to stand up by our own show, content and express who we are and I’m always positive with all the up and downs. At the same time, I’m open to constructive criticism and suggestions. Also if I mistakenly hurt someone then I apologize and admit my mistake.

Any tips for aspiring influencers? Be your own, be unique. Make the efforts and create your own content. Also always be inspired and motivated to create a content strategy that provides value to the conversation. Use good and believable captions. Connect with co-bloggers and influencers. Use hashtags and most importantly keep your content of good quality. That will make you last in the long run as a credible respected name. Can you share some highs? For me the highs have been gaining followers or good engagements, but more than that its creating attractive content. Tell us about your passion for music! Music has always been my happy place; it is something that gave me the courage to be “Me” and showcase to the world what magic I really possessed as a singing talent. At an early age, when other kids were busy with their hobbies, I understood I was made for something else, and it was music that made me feel I was different. Music forms the very core of my heart, and it is something that has added more meaning to my life. I absolutely love singing, and God has been kind to gift me a mesmerizing voice, which so far has connected well with my listeners. The passion I have for singing and music overall has given me this insane energy and enthusiasm to always give my best. Whenever I get a chance to be in front of the mic or jam in my room to further hone my singing talents, I feel closer to a certain infinite energy, which makes me believe I was made for this, such is the passion I have for singing and music. n an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the gorgeous Bollywood star Jacqueline Fernandez talks about

sharing an amazing chemistry with her co-stars, and decodes her style and fashion choices. What do you most love about Dubai? Dubai is extremely rich in its culture and that’s what I love the most about the city. You’ve been super-busy shooting. Tell us about your upcoming projects… Yes, it has been a crazy time shooting for multiple projects. I have two releases with Akshay (Kumar) Ram Setu and Bachchan Pandey. Then there is Cirkus with Ranveer (Singh), Kick sequel with Salman (Khan) and Attack with John (Abraham). I have also shot for a couple of projects which are yet to be announced.

associate with a project or a brand, what’s your priority? I always prefer to associate with brands that have substance and purpose.

Which actor do you think you look best with? With who do you share the best chemistry? (Laughs) I can’t pick one. They all have something unique about each one of them. I have enjoyed performing on-screen with all of them and ended up being friends. When you spend so much time together, it’s natural to develop a bond with your co-stars. I think the friendship I share with them, also reflects on screen.

As a fashion diva and a style icon, what is it that you look for in eyewear? I look for style and comfort when it comes to choosing a pair of eyewear for myself. What attracted you to the eyewear brand Nova? Like I said, I prefer to associate with brands that have substance and purpose and Nova is one such brand which is not only about style, but also stands for substance in style. It is a brand which adds value to fashion, by addressing the need of vision correction and protection, without compromising on aesthetics. Nova brings confidence and comfort with a great pair of eyewear.

Fashion or comfort, what comes first for you? I prefer comfort over fashion. What is that one style rule you swear by? While there are on-going fashion trends which everyone follows, I swear by clothing / accessories which I am comfortable in. If you are comfortable then you have the confidence to pull off anything and everything.

Your bespectacled look in Kick was much appreciated… Was that your input for the character? Thank you, I am glad that everyone liked it. It was actually a collaborative decision made by my team and me.

I think the friendship I share with them (co-stars), also reflects on screen!

How do you pick that perfect pair of glasses for your eyes? Any tips! A good pair of eyewear with UV and blue-light protection is essential for maintaining healthy vision and protecting the eyes from harmful rays. Today such functional eyewear with advanced technology offered by international eyewear brands such as Nova comes in stylish frame shapes and designs and I am definitely fond of them. You!

Dubai based designer, stylist and entrepreneur Varoin Marwah is a known name in the UAE landscape and in the world of Bollywood. Amaal Mallik’s outfits that you see on the cover story and the cover are designed by him. A creative soul and a constant learner, Varoin aces the game and stuns us with his very-wearable but stylish accents in clothing every season. Manju Ramanan chats up with him.

When did you realise that this is the space you wanted to be in? I always knew I will get into fashion ever since I was a child. The love for fashion was always evident in my growing up years. I remember as a child I used to demand to have my outfits stitched as that would give me the opportunity to choose the colour/ fabrics and eventually design the garment as per my wish. From the airline to the design industry, three learnings? Three learnings that are actually applicable to the fashion business from the airline industry are1. Being on time!-Deliveries always have to be on time. Just as the flights always aim to depart on time I ensure all my commitments are met on time or before time

2. Understanding people’s needs - Being emotionally intelligent is a very big part of fashion as well as airlines as you deal constantly with various individuals which means one has to be constantly “emotionally aware,” of people’s needs. 3. Innovation- Keep evolving and always try to offer something new to your clients. How do you customise your clothing depending on personalities? I get to know my clients as individuals and most of my designs come after the in- depth initial meeting where I try to get to understand my client’s personality and requirements. I am curious to know everything like where they will wear the outfit to, the weather at that time, decor of the place, time they will be wearing the outfit and if there’s any particular theme or what their spouse will be wearing?

gowns. The response has been exceptional and I am happy to build myself more into this area along with my existing men’s wear. It’s a shame I am not much available online as yet but this year I have promised to be available more online and cater to different clients from around the world digitally. Tell us about shooting the Filmfare ME cover? It was a fantastic experience to work two of my favourite Amaal Malik and Mohamed Ramadan. Thank you Filmfare ME for making me a part and enabling work with two of my absolute favourites.

How has Dubai been a breeding ground for your creativity? The multicultural environment of the city has been such a solid base for my work. I had to ensure my brand can cater to every nationality and represents every individual’s personality in the best form possible. I have worked with various clients from different cultures and each one has a distinct taste. I consider myself blessed with this experience as I can safely say the exposure I have on daily basis here, not many designers around the world get to have. How has the Bollywood fraternity catapulted your work? My work got picked up from Instagram. It’s as simple as me posting my designs and slowly but surely various celebrities stylists started to request for my look-books and started working with me. I have not met half of the stars personally that I have dressed as I believe when your work can do the talking then that’s more than enough. I have been blessed with a lot of love and support from the fraternity and truly appreciate everyone who I have worked with. I owe them a huge thank you as my organic work relationship like these reassured my belief in the power of doing what you do the best and everything else will flow. Tell us about designing for the stars - Ranveer Singh, Mohammed Ramadan and now Amaal Mallik? Each star has his/her own distinct personality which is what I try to work around and enhance. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Ranveer Singh’s stylist Nitasha Gaurav as she understands my designs so well and always knows which piece would work the best for which occasion. Mohamed Ramdan and Amaal Mallik are both are artistes and singers but very different personalities. I loved working with Amaal as he is super humble and open to suggestions. Mohamed Ramadan is and always been exciting to work with as he, like Ranveer, enjoys experimenting. Both of them have a strong desire to wear something futuristic. You were part of the Fashion week 2021. Tell us about that experience? The experience was fantastic. The platform was built by two of the most talented and hardworking individuals- Kevin Oliver and Saif khan. They managed to curate a very strong platform together. The best of the best designers came together to showcase their collections and I consider myself blessed to be a part of such an amazing experience. What are your plans for 2022? INTERVIEW

Sheykhar Ravjiani’s new pop song Rang by Sufi Score has just hit the internet and is a great success. Hummable, well written lyrics, a well-shot video shot by Ravi Jadhav against the backdrop of Mumbai’s known landmarks with two beautiful dancers with their languid movements, the soothing and hummable song, is one of its kind. The music composer and singer, who was styled by his daughter for the video, was in Dubai to promote his song and I had a chance to catch up with him at Palm Jumeirah. The weather was just right, the winter sun shone bright and the gentle waves of the sea in the background added to the poetry in the conversation. Excerpts from the interview with the composer turned singer. Tell me about Sufi Score and how did you associate with them? The people at Sufi Score are music lovers and good friends of mine. They are working with artistes across the world and are keen to promote good poetry, lyrics, ghazals and songs. I had promised them one song. They are working with artists across the world to get a flavor of western and Indian classical music.

Colours of

You composed the Hanuman Chalisa a few years ago for your dad and this one is for your mom? My mother really liked this song. Things had gotten dark and scary because of the pandemic and lockdown was announced and every single artist was househound. At time I thougt, I would’nt let the fire within me extinguish but make it burn even more brighter. Every single day compsoed one tune. I got my recording set up in my house in my bedrooma and, everyday I would wake up and compose a song. I called my lyric- writer friends Rashmi Viraj, Kumar and Priya Saraiya and sent them a tune daily and they would write the words for me and by the end of the day I would have composed a song and would hear the song on my headphones when I went for my evening walk at 5:30 pm. I cannot count the songs but I can tell you that my hard disc is full. Out of what I had composed, I chose my top 30 and then minimized it to 20 ,then to 10 and from the top 10, my mom connected very well to Rang. She kept hearing it 6-7 times and soon she started humming it all day. So, I chose this song and we set a date of release. Tell us about Rang? The song has a classic vibe to it. It has a European flavor with mandolin, guitars as well as accordion,

that dad plays very well. That flavor of the West and brij bhasha come together in this song and we decided to talke to Ravi Jadhav to direct the video. So, Sufi Score, Ravi and I put it together. We shot it in a South Bombay terrace and at twilight. We had exactly 15 minutes to shoot between 7:15-7:30 pm, exactly the time when the Taj dome lights are lit. You can see Colaba Causeway, the Taj and the Gateway of India in the background. We shot the song in double speed and the two dancers who are in the video with me, Upasana and Aishwarya are brilliant. The entire mood is of a band playing in the terrace and the general ambience is of grace, happiness and poetry. We started rehearsals at 3 pm and by 6 pm with both dancers and got it done in 15 minutes. The lyrics are by Priya Saraiya. I wanted to digress from the normal words we usually hear and didnt want to use Punjabi, but something on the lines of the immortal Piya Tose Naina Laage Re from Guide. In fifteen minites Priya wrote it for me and sent it across. A man is singing the song from the girl’s point of view and it is about the girl being jealous of a guy who is in love with someone else. Mr Amitabh Bachchan endorsed this song and none of my songs are complete without his blessing. You cannot find a better friend than him. He understand and follows music and reciprocates so well. The way he jams, collaborates and loves music – he is one of a kind. Over 21 years in Bollywood and advertising. How do you see the change in yourself? The last one and a half years were the busiest two years of my life. The ‘most beautiful busy,’ where I could find myself and fall in love with music again. Suddenly I got the vibe I had 25 years ago. I connected to the kind of artist I was 25 years ago. I went back to that stage. It was like a flashback in your head and then you transport yourself to that space. I come from a musical family where my grad-dad played Shankar Jaikishen, my mom sang Lata ji, and dad listened to the Beatles. It seemed like that I went back to era and brought back the time machine with me. How do you define romance? Poetry thrives on the longing in romance. A lot has been written on unrequited love, insecurity, romance with a tinge of sadness. In Rang, the girl has an emotion of not sharing her man with anyone else. It is happy-sad with a bit of envy on the other girl who is the subject of the man’s affection. The emotion of sadness due to envy becomes cute when it is done subtly. We are never fulfilled when we are in love. You want to be in that state and you want to stay young because the state of being in love is always youthful. A slightly mature love is when you buy things for your girl-friend or wife and she smiles. It is quieter and subtle but the young love has more passion, more dramatic complaints.(Laugh) What did failure teach you? More than failure it is rejection that teaches you a lot. People once told me to quit music and that you can never sing or compose. People from the music industry thought I was good for nothing. In 1995-96 I went with a friend who was auditioning for Sa-re-ga-ma. I lost the battle by 2-3 points to a student of Pandit Hridaynath Mageshkar. I felt like an achiever because I lost to him. I resolved that I would come back to the show not as a participant but as a judge and in 2007 I came back as a judge. The head of a record label had once told me I should just quit. Unfortunaltey the tables have turned and the thing is I work with many of such people. You might hate that person but you thank him too. That fire wouldn’t have been ignited if someone didnt challenge you or reject you. But I am amazed at today’s generation. If you reject them, they will ask you to go to hell and try something else. They have good self worth and self confidence has gone through the roof. I often see the attitude of “I am the king/queen. How dare you tell me. I will do it and show you,” in today’s generation. How do you judge the songs that have millions of views today? You judge excellence by your choice. There is a huge platter

kept in front of you and you have to decide what you want to consume. There are various streaming platforms where artists put out thier material. The listener needs to put in a little more effort to curate his choice of music. Earlier we had a few choices, today, 700 things release every second day. How do you choose? Having said that some great artists are not on social media, and if they do, they might have 20 followers. What is your opinion of fly-by-night talent? Fly by night talent is pure destiny. I have seen mediocrity celebrated as excellence. You often hear that the person is making money, being booked for so many shows an has bought so many properties. Everyone has come with a destiny. People have made him successful. No one is forcing him on anyone’s throat. If the audience connects with your persona, music, presentation or marketing – people are successful. You have to admire marketing! Does the artist Sheykhar get influenced by Sheykhar, the music composer? Not anymore. The artist Sheykhar has found wings to fly and lives, breathes and loves music. I have surrendered myself to my pristine past and it is nurturing me like never before. That is the beauty of independent music. it liberates you. You dont need anyone’s stamp on it. I am not willing to put my own stamp on it. I feel like a painter deeply involved in the painting he is creating - expressing freely without judging or asking anything. It was time to break away from being a composer to a singer and go back to what I was 25 years ago. But now that I have found the singer in me, there is immense joy in creating. The beauty is that I dont expect anything from what I create and that is when your best work happens. It is a dangerous place to be in. Do you connect to divinity through music? Music is one of the closest art forms to god. But I can put my feet into the ocean, hear birds chirping, walk on the sand and hear natural sounds like the rustling of leaves and get a connection. There is music in everything. You could hear the faint temple chant from the corner of a street or the voice of pandits, be at an art exhibition and be taken in by the colours connection can be anywhere. INTERVIEW

PHOTOGRAPH: YASIR ARAFAT

Charming his way into

Hearts!

That’s Karan Deol. The star-kid may belong to the third generation of one of the most-loved and respected film families, but there’re no starry airs as we catch up with the upcoming star at a café. Here to ring in the New Year, he confesses his love for the city, ‘Dubai is a food haven and being a foodie at heart, this is one of my favourite destinations!’ Shy and reticent like his father, Sunny Deol, Karan has a warm candour just like his grandfather, the Bollywood legend Dharmendra, a mischevious smile like his uncle Bobby Deol and a strong connect to realism like Abhay Deol. He is clearly a chip off the old block… but also his own, I find out as we chat nineteen to the dozen in between our rounds of coffee and digging in his favourite carrot cake. Excerpts -Aakanksha Naval-Shetye You have been garnering much praise for Velle that released on the OTT recently… Yes, I am thrilled with the response I have been getting for it. I had really enjoyed shooting for it and now to see the audience enjoy it just adds on to the experience. It took quite a while for the second release after your debut Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas? Yes, we had a lot of expectations from Pal Pal… unfortunately it didn’t do as well as expected and then the lockdown happened, so it was just one thing after another and there wasn’t much we could do but wait. How did you deal with it, the film didn’t do as well

even though your performance was appreciated? It’s a blessing life has taught me to be patient and wait it out. Like I said, there was lockdown soon after, so I utilized that time trying to assess my performance and work more on myself. I realized that certain things are out of your hand, what is in our hand is to give a sincere performance, with the right intentions and the people can see that. Success and failure are both temporary here. The film may work or not, but if you do well, people remember that. The numbers are important as they lead to the next film, but your performance is what will stay longer than the number talk. As actors we are always work in progress, this is something my dad always tells me, so I kept myself engaged positively and did not take the film not doing well to heart. It was a great

46 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST February 2022

27/01/2022 11:01 AM

learning experience for me, so I took it all in my stride. I did online workshops, read a lot of books, scripts too. As an actor I can only bring in my 100 per cent to the table, but I want to make my 100 per cent to be the best it can be. Velle was different though… Yes, I think the more you work, the more you grow as an actor, and grow as a person with these experiences and slowly you find your own way. Pal Pal… was my debut film so there was a certain baggage too, dad was directing it and I was probably nervous… the second time around, I got to enjoy the process more. Of course, Pal Pal was a different learning experience, but with this one I came more into my own. You are quite the chip off the old block? A little bit, not exactly. I have grown up watching dad’s movies, but when I do my scenes I try to be myself than try doing it like my dad or try his style. He’s brilliant, but I’d rather not imitate him at all and instead learn from him and see how he tackles his work. And one of the things I’ve learnt from him is to just be the character, when in front of the camera, just forget everything else and be that person you’re supposed to be. There’s an influence of so many different personalities at home for you… Your dad, grandfather, uncles… Each from a different genre of cinema. What kind of roles do you see yourself gravitate to? Well, they were brilliant in what they did. But while I’m inspired by their process, I’m keen to carve my own path and find my space. So, I’m pretty much open to doing anything. I want to experiment, make mistakes, learn, grow… and keep it all as real as possible. Like dad started as a romantic hero, but went on to do some of the most amazing action films out there. That was his path, his mould. I would love to do action too, try to bring in his level of intensity and emotions, but in my own way. I know there’s a goodwill and I’m expected to carry the legacy forward, but I also want to carve my own niche. What’s the talk on the dinner table like in the Deol household? Well, we all talk about movies, TV shows, gym, I’ve started working out more intensely as I’m starting Apne 2 where I will be playing a boxer, so I need to be at my fittest best, so lots of talk about that too. Apne 2 is different from both your previous films? Yes, the film will present a different side of me, and that’s the intention. With each film, I want to explore more to myself as an actor. What’s your process like? I just want to be out there, doing as much as I can, learning on the job. I have no starry hang-ups nor do I want myself to be projected as this larger than life hero. I’d be happy establishing myself as an actor on any platform – movies or OTT. I’d rather be an unconventional hero than get comfortable in any slot. I want to explore and with OTT, it’s all the more exciting. The senior generation is still reigning, but then each generation has come with their own brilliance… Yes, the newer generations know the craft and are bold, not afraid to break barriers and doing it for the right reasons. There are no heroes now, so that is liberating for any actor. Like I am open to auditions, to workshops, this was rather unheard of in the older generations. What was your childhood like? Do you have many industry friends… No, most of my closest friends are from my school. We were

On the Personal Front

‘Well, I’m seeing someone, but I’d rather not talk about it. She’s not from the industry.’ never brought up like industry kids, so I’ve never been in that space. Like dad, I still don’t attend film parties and all. But movies, gaming and football were always a passion. Watching a film in a theatre is a huge part of my childhood and Chandan in Juhu was a regular haunt. I miss that seetimaar crowd in single theatres, the balcony seats, the samosa, popcorn… that’s something that we as the newer generations will not enjoy as much. The one advice you follow as a rule… Is what my dad told me… That is to never give up. He told me there will be good times and bad. The idea is always to improve and grow. The growth never ends. And also to always be kind. I’m grateful to be a part of this industry, and fortunate to be a part of a loving family. So, this is one thing that my family believes in and I’ve grown up imbibing… That love breeds more love, so there’s no room for hatred or negativity in my life at all.

Quick take The one thing you’d want to take from: From Daada (Dharmendra) - His natural comic timing, he’s very witty! From Dad (Sunny Deol) - His intensity, he doesn’t need to speak to express his emotions. His eyes, his frame speaks volumes. Bobby Chacha (Bobby Deol) - He’s reinventing and exploring so much as an actor. Abhay (Abhay Deol) - His subtlety is what I like, he keeps it real. He had the courage to do a completely new kind of cinema and choose brave films that were ahead of their times. He never cared about

INTERVIEW

My grand-dad was about

tough-love and I am

indebted to him

Says Vardhan Puri, the legendary Amrish Puri’s grandson, who will be seen opposite Kaveri Kapur, Shekhar Kapur’s daughter in her debut film Bobby Aur Rishi ki Love Story directed by Kunal Kohli. A theatre buff who was AD to several Yash Raj films including Ishaqzaade and

Shuddh Desi Romance, Vardhan was in Dubai to be part of the Expo2020. Manju Ramanan catches up with him at the coffee shop at Emirates Towers. Waht beings you to Dubai? I came to Dubai to meet a few people and attend the Expo 2020. I watched the spectacular Why” The Musical and was transported to a different realm with its visual magic and song. I forgot where I was and I have no words to describe the experience. I was shooting in London for a horror-fantasy film and this is a good break before I head out to India. We shot in London and Cardiff and it is my first tryst with this genre. How was it? Any spooky experiences? On and off set too we had strange experiences. We were living

in a hotel and a random human like person entered my room and attacked me in broad daylight. I don’t know whether people will believe in all of this. It was crazy that some apparition showed up and started throwing my things all over, attacked me, pinned me to the bed. I was disoriented the executive producer and people from the reception and house-keeping ran to my room. Some people did see that apparition and the hotel staff seemed a little unnerved and not surprised but it was insane. They drove it out of the hotel and in ten minutes it attacked someone at the coffee shop. The police were called too. On the first day of the

shoot, our director told us that the story of the film was a real-life story to do with real incidents and we need to pray and take permissions from the energies because we were presenting them in our film. When we started the action scene I got injured and the wound looked like a clearly written letter ‘A.’ Apparently the initial of the character I was playing was from A. If you look at the good side, my sister and I both saw my grandfather a day after he passed away. We were very close to both my grandparents. In fact. we would sleep between them. A day after he passed away, I was in my sister’s room and the door opened and there he was standing in front of us in his favourite night suit. We were stunned. Then the door shut with a bang and he was gone. Your grand-father had a remarkable influence in your life? I was a very excitable kid. When dadu wasn’t around, I would wear his moustache and costumes and behave like him like the onscreen Amrish Puri. While everyone else was entertained he was scared and he didn’t want me to get obsessed with being a filmy Kid. He told me it wasn’t my age to think of acting since I was only 7 years old. The doyen of theatre Pandit Satyadev Dubey came home one day and he asked Dubey jee to take me under his wing to break my ego. “Isko filmy keede ne kaati liya hai. Ise theatre mai daal do,” he said. Next day onwards, I started going to the theater after school. On weekends it was all day. I did everything there – served tea, took print outs, swept the floor etc. Dadu was clear that no one should treat me specially. He wanted me to have a normal upbringing. I am so glad that it happened this way. Also, I was good in my studies and was good academically, though my sister was the topper in class. There was a lot of pressure to cope up with both sides studies and theatre I was very stressed and pressured too. When I have children in the future I don’t know if I ll make them do the same thing. A lot of important moments of my childhood were at the theatre. Now I am living my childhood. I feel way younger than my age and do what my heart tells me. How was it at the theatres? I became an understudy for Tughlug. Then I did Surya ki Antim Kiran a lot of Premchand etc. Dadu used to come for rehearsals to see if I am doing well. He never praised me in front of people but behind my back he would be proud of me. I asked him why do you become so strict when you are onstage and he said that he would assume that persona organically. In theatre he liked the chain of command. Imagine I was on stage and the age of 12- 13, he would sit in the audience and making those serious Amrish Puri faces at me. Even Dubey saab did not praise me. But that is how the older generation was. They believed in tough love. But it helped me in my career immensely. Was Mr Amrish Puri strict at home? No, he wasn’t. He was very sweet and kind. He would call me Tiger or sher. He was very meticulous. He would keep

a hand-written diary to note down his schedules. He did all the coordination himself and never needed a secretary. He answered the phone by himself and was extremely organized. I try to do the same. Also, the booming voice he is known for, he wasn’t born with it. He cultivated it over a period of years- between the age of 25 years to 41 years. You have a hero in your grand dad? He was 41 when he did his first commercial film Hum Paanch, produced by Boney Surinder Kapoor and directed by Bapu. It is outstanding and once you see him in that movie and the magic of the character, you know what a great artiste he is. Who among your house guests impressed you? I was 14 years old and the legendary Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya aunty came home for dinner. Bachchan saab insisted on simple, home cooked meal with bhindi. Throughout the meal, he and Amit uncle held hands and spoke very affectionately in Punjabi. There was no façade, no mask between them. While we were having dinner, Bachchan saab’s driver called him and he asked him to go and then, once the meal was done, my father said he would drop him home. We went to drop him home and it was so cosy, so endearing. He is a very close friend of dadu who was 10 years older to him. It was like watching two children. Everyone had tears in their eyes when he left home after the meal. Any actor you look up to? Shahrukh Khan is extremely warm. I was an AD during Ishaqzaade and he met me on set and connected to me. He didn’t know who I was and we hung out together and when he left, he gave me a hug and kissed me on my cheek. Later that evening, he was told that I was Amrish Puri’s grandson. He was very respectful of him. When SRK had made his debut with Deewana, he was a young actor on set and was looking for some chai with his smoke. My grand-dad arranged ginger tea for him. Shahrukh still remembers that. That makes him great. What are your current projects? Kaveri Kapur, Shekhar Kapur’s daughter who is a student of music is making a debut opposite me in my next film, that is Kunal Kolhi’s Bobby Aur Rishi ki Love Story. At the moment, I have a rigid contract with an international series that is a large-scale production with actors around the world. It is a thriller and I am very excited about it. There is a film I am doing for an OTT platform. How do you see cinema content change post pandemic? After this pandemic and after the world has been exposed to world content, people binge watch shows. My staff watches the shows I watch and I believe that commercial cinema directors have to understand that shift and create content accordingly. It will be a collaborative effort between film-makers and actors. And script is central to all. At one time writer Salim saab had charged higher than the lead actor of his film. It was a miracle in those days. Todays it is becoming the norm. I am glad that writers are getting their due. February 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 49

FOOD REVIEW

A

taste

for success! Bharat Harpalani, Business Partner, Dialogue talks to Aakanksha NavalShetye about his concept and vision for Dialogue How did you start in the hospitality business? I have been a part of the events industry for more than a decade now. When the lockdown kicked in and events took a backseat, I got time to spend on developing my longtime dream project – that’s Dialogue. We found a great location and from then on everything just fell in place. Tell us about your vision and concept for Dialogue? I always felt that Dubai had no Indian dining and lounge that focused on exquisite modern Indian cuisine combined with the right kind of entertainment. Entertainment was restricted to either pubs or bars and exquisite cuisines were restricted to finedining restaurants. I felt that combining the two would be a great idea. And as the team kept coming together the vision was pretty clear. Not just the F&B, the ambience and the music too is quite a hit with your patrons… As I mentioned earlier I have been a part of the events and the nightlife industry for more than a decade. During that time I have worked with various DJs and grasped a pretty good knowledge about people’s taste in music. All I had to do was to share my ideas with our resident DJ Pierre and magic just began to happen. What segment of patrons would you say you are targeting? Anybody and everybody who loves good food, good music and a vibrant ambience is my target market. I just ask people to come down once and try it, post that the experience will make them come back for more again and again. What would you say is the USP of Dialogue? There was only one USP that I had envisioned for Dialogue from the beginning - The Overall Experience. We try to give our guests a scintillating experience from the moment they set foot into the lounge. From the entrance to the settlement of the bill, our team only works towards making sure that your night out was the ultimate one. Our Mixologist Rocky has created some very popular mocktails, for which we have got great response. In due course of time we intend to keep trying and delivering the best of the best in this segment. Can you tell us more about the food and the fusion concept? We have created the menu after talking to our patrons and understanding what they crave. Twisting comfort food with our Chef Avneesh’s experience in Global cuisines has given our dishes a new look and feel. The menu at Dialogue is inspired from various cuisines from around the world. For instance in our best-selling dish The Makhni Risotto we substitute the Arrabiata sauce with the classic makhni gravy giving the same feel but with

an Indian twist. We have also created a healthy version of the classic chilly chicken whereby we use grilled chicken instead of the regular fried chicken. We have a few vegan dishes on our menu as well. In a nutshell, we cater to everyone’s cravings thereby making it the ultimate food destination. What are the special events we can look forward to? Sticking to our core we intend to be more of an experiencebased venue than an event-based venue. However we do have our regular events that are ongoing. Every Wednesday we have a Ladies Night, which is the best deal ladies can sign up for. At 99 AED women can have unlimited house pouring beverages starting from 6pm all the way to 3am whilst enjoying Live singing. On Thursdays we select the best of the best bands to provide Live entertainment. Fridays we host the most happening desi night, AKS Nights which are the longest running desi night in town. Our guest DJ gives you the best in Bollywood and commercials. Saturday Nights are our home-grown Bollywood Nights with our resident DJ Pierre. How do you stay ahead of the curve in this competitive industry? Competition is always healthy. It teaches you the dos and the don’ts of the industry. We at Dialogue are always ready to learn which helps us to constantly keep on evolving not only to give the best to our guests but also to set new benchmarks in the industry.

was a treat for sea-food lovers. But what we would totally recommend is their ‘Chicken Chapli Kebab’ and the ‘Pindi Choley Hummus’. While the kebabs were perfectly done, and served with flavoursome mint chutney, we also loved the Middle Eastern blend with the good old Choley. This one was Choley flavoured Hummus served with Zatar. We would also highly recommend a few other dishes including ‘Chicken Tikka’ that comes served on a generous layer of masala cous cous. All the dishes were well-marinated and tender. Perfectly cooked, the unique tastes would satiate the food-adventurers, and even the ones not so high on experimenting. We’d definitely recommend most on the menu. Their drinks section are like the perfect icing on the cake. Ambience The interesting funky graffiti styled artworks on the wall made for an interesting décor. The place has a small stage for Live entertainment and the DJ is known to play some of the best music in town.

Dialogue You just can’t have enough of it! Looking for the best in fusion dishes with generous doses of LIVE entertainment, then Dialogue is the place to be, finds Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

Service The staff is extremely friendly and courteous, serving up the dishes with a great flair. The waiting time for each dish isn’t much either and the service is prompt. Verdict Located in Majestic Hotel, it is very popular with the crowds. The place makes for perfect dining choice whether with family or friends. Making reservations ahead helps as the place gets quite full on the weekends especially. If you are a food-lover, then Dialogue should be right on top of your ‘must-dine’ lists!

Dialogue is a foodie’s delight! This we discovered when we recently popped into the lounge. While one side of the lounge gives you the feels of a luxury nightclub, the other half slightly on a higher ground, overlooking the lounge, is funkier and vibrant, and we loved both the options equally as both had their own charms. Having settled in, what we were not prepared for were the surprising fusion dishes that the chef had on the menu. Each dish, finely curated and created by Chef Avneesh Gautama had a twist to the taste. And while there was no limits to the creativity and the experimental dishes, there were no compromise on the delightful taste and each dish was as delicious as the other. We were spoilt for choice, and so will you be, as we learned that the Chef also cooks up something special on demand! So, if you’re craving for any flavours not on the menu, you might get lucky if the Chef is around.

Tandoori Prawn Rechado

Butter Chicken Samosa

Chicken Desi Goreng

Food We kickstarted our culinary experience here with the most odd-name on the menu - a dish called ‘Black’. With no description given of what the dish might be, we decided to go for it. What looks like a burnt serving, with a black sauce, is actually one of the yummiest on the menu. A twist to a popular Indian snack, the dish taught us that just like books, the foods too should not be judged by the looks! Next, we tried their ‘Tandoori Prawn Rechado.’ Cooked in coconut reduction, this popular Goan inspired dish

FOOD REVIEW

Farzi Cafe Their brand-new menu is a treat for food-lovers! Famous for its flair for global fusion, Dubai’s innovative modern Indian bistro now has a brand new irresistible line-up of theatre-filled dishes, finds Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

If Indian flavours tickle your taste-buds and creativity and innovation satiate the gastronome in you, then Farzi Café is where you should head to. Located at City Walk, the Indian bistro is known for delivering thrilling flavour combinations and a contemporary take on classic Indian dishes. Boasting of a beautiful interior, and an equally fun walk-side seating area, the restaurant looks inviting and you are spoilt for choice when it comes to taking your pick of the dishes. As we discovered, each dish comes packed full of flavours and cleverly constructed fun elements with a dramatic contrast of colours. Created by one of the city’s favourite culinary experts, Executive Chef Pradeep Singh Negi, the dishes are a treat for food-lovers. He says, “We are always trying to find new ways to excite the sophisticated culinary palates of Dubai diners and we’re confident our new menu will deliver. Taking inspiration from dishes we’ve tried from around the world and sprinkling them with a bit of Farzi magic, the new plates give our guests the chance to challenge their perception of what flavour means.” 52 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST February 2022

Food Kicking off the new flavour revolution, we dig in the entrees starting with the desi street-food favourite – the Bombay Bhel with a twist as it comes with the artistic touch of yogurt spheres. The mouth-watering tangy sauces and the burst of curd in the mouth, only prepare you for more yumminess to come… Succulent and tender, the Farzified Kebab Platter (chicken tikka, tandoori prawns, mutton seekh kebab) and the Tandoori Lamb Chops (Pot roast lamb chops served with caramelized oinion and mint chutney) are equally lipsmacking. While another IG-worthy twist on the classic Indian tikka combines tender Wagyu and vibrant purple potatoes roasted on the tandoori in masala spices. We strongly recommend their Dahi Kebab served on hash brown tikki for the veg-lovers! For the main course, there’s the hero-dish that’s sure to set the taste-buds firing, Farzi’s new Mutton Korma Pot Pie is a sight to behold. Burnished gold on the outside, its pasty crust is dramatically cracked to reveal melting chunks of mutton slow-cooked in a rich korma gravy. Served with a fresh pile of methi-infused paratha to soak up the juices, this indulgent showstopper is a joy to be shared with family and friends. Also do try their Parsi Chicken Curry with coriander paratha and the Jhol masala chicken biryani. You can also try the all-time favourites - Kerala shrimp biryani with black gram pachadi and double dairy dal makhni. For the non-meat eaters, there’s also the Rajasthani kadhi. Much attention and detailing has been given to the presentation as well that adds to the experience. For the desserts, dive into their culinary masterpiece –Phirni Oxide - the much-loved Indian rice pudding phirni is given a contemporary ‘oxide’ twist and made from risotto rice for extra punch but still sings with cardamom and saffron. Also go for the farzified kunafa nest, with lace-like nests of kunafa filled with rasgulla! For the drinks, we had what we’d call an absolute beauty and perfect guzzler for the cool evenings – Dark Chocolate Bomb (dark chot chocolate with marshmallows) an absolute must-have for chocolatelovers! In contrast, we also tried their Wild Berry Delight, a refreshing berry flavoured drink that actually went quite well with the foods. Ambience Well-spaced, the restaurant is beautifully lit and the minimal yet eye-grabbing interiors lend it a warmth and welcoming feel. Service They score high on this too. The service is very prompt and the staff is friendly. Verdict An amalgamation of traditional global cuisine with regional influences, local flavours and contemporary presentations, Farzi Café offers a European bistro style experience. Patrons can enjoy the finest of modern-day cuisine laced with an adaptation of some iconic dishes from around the world.

ombining the concept of a fun night out with good food and the best in entertainment, it is easy to see why Headlines outlets – Campus, Premier and Executive - are such favorites for those looking for a good time. And while the food is a huge draw, what makes the patrons keep coming back for more is also their LIVE entertainment. The brainchild of Mr. Suneel Bhambani (CEO Fusion Group), the HEADLINES Concept is famous for its’ Live Celebrity Bands (many of whom actually got their launch platform at Headlines), Celebrity DJs, Stand Up Comedians, Dancers, Look-Alike Artists and more – all forming the colorful plethora of Fusion Entertainment. Suneel’s interests and love has always been for cinema, theatrics, standup comedy and music, and this passion shows in the nightlife feels of all the HEADLINES outlets. In fact, some of the most trending nightlife F&B concepts have been standardized in Headlines. Food From popular Indian dishes such as Butter Chicken, Biryani, Naan, Chicken Tikka to contemporary fusion Continental foods like Pastas, Pizzas, Burgers, Salads and from popular Arabic dishes such as Shawarma, Shish Tawook, authentic grill items like Tandoori Chicken, Kebabs to the famous Mumbai street food varieties such as Kheema Pao, Samosa Pao, Vada Pao, Bhelpuri, there’s something for every taste. FOOD REVIEW

Headlines Executive Strategically located, it’s a venue everyone talks about. The highlight was being located in the heart of the Dubai World Trade Centre - the leading global exhibition hub. Situated securely in the lobby area of one of the leading hotel chain brands of UAE – IBIS by Accor – Headlines Executive was formed with the idea of ‘Meet-Greet-Party!’ By the day, the venue serves scores of business persons, professionals and corporate groups who hustle in the WTC and can have meetings, discussions or even unwind with peers over some contemporary food. The grandest in size of all the Headlines outlets, this one caters to huge private affairs and celebrity gatherings. What is truly amazing about this outlet, is how it completely transforms into a spectacular Nightlife Destination by evening, dazzling guests with Celebrity Live Band Performances, DJ Nights and Lights!

Headlines Premier

The third Headlines outlet is perched on the topmost floor of one of the most elite 5-Star Hotels of Dubai, Stella Di Mare in Marina. Suneel shares that the venue was conceptualized with the slogan ‘Views Bites Cocktails…’ Serving modern fusion bites with superior barista flair, this place is perfect to enjoy panoramic bird-eye views of Dubai, overlooking beautiful seas by JBR and Marina. A notch higher in standards than the others, the venue offers exclusive celebrity band performances with top-grade service and international appeal. Headlines Premier is beautifully designed, with a section that can be exclusively reserved for private gatherings and events. 56 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST February 2022
