Bespoken Celebrating the New!

Bliss !

New is always exciting. That promise of fresh starts, hopes, resolutions, prayers, and celebrations! Taking confident strides into the New Year, there’s much we have to look forward to, starting with the new Saturday - Sunday weekend offs! We are also super-thrilled and happy to announce our very own Filmfare Middle East F&B Night that honours excellence in the culinary world. Registrations open soon. For more deets, log onto www.filmfaremiddleeast.com Talking about the F&B industry, the year 2021 ended on a good note, especially for them as well as the entertainment and the fashion industry! Tourism in Dubai is at an all-time high, theatres are welcoming back the footfalls and the movie-lovers are once again celebrating their stars on the big screen. If Hollywood had the Marvel global blockbuster Spiderman: No Way Home to celebrate, Bollywood too had its money-spinner Akshay Kumar raking in the moolah at the Box Office with his cop-caper Sooryavanshi, while Ranveer Singh hit the ball out of the park with his outstanding performance as the former cricket captain Kapil Dev in the brilliantly crafted 83 that chronicles India’s victory of its first World Cup! Looking ahead, there’s much excitement on the OTT. Several more Bollywood stars will be seen making their debut on it including Shahid Kapoor. While in the moviedom, Pan India films are all the buzz, blurring lines between Bollywood and the South film industry. The year will also see Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan return on the big screen after more than three years and that certainly has their fans across rejoicing. What I am currently enjoying, however, besides the pleasant wintry Dubai weather, is the DSF (Dubai Shopping Festival) that will be on all this month, right uptil January 30. And if you think that it’s us women who give in to the temptations of the ‘sale’ tag, then you should check out the crowds here! Can’t say that the men outnumber women, but they certainly don’t shy away either when it comes to shopping! After all, what’s better than having a new wardrobe for the new year ahead right! So, guys, ring in the new, bring in the cheer, and on that note, here’s wishing all of you…

SRK CONCERNED ABOUT HIS SON’S SAFETY Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan was embroiled in a drug case and was imprisoned for nearly 20 days before he was discharged on bail. Before King Khan’s birthday, his son returned home and his fans rejoiced with him. Shah Rukh Khan had put all his shoots and other commitments on hold and now that his son is back, the superstar will get back to work. We hear that SRK has taken some important measures for his son’s security. Reports suggest Shah Rukh and Gauri have decided to keep a bodyguard with Aryan 24/7. It’s said that the superstar will allot his most trusted security guard Ravi Singh to his son. Shah Rukh Khan believes that his son is quite a reserved lad and won’t be comfortable with a new person and hence Ravi Singh, who has been with SRK for some years now, has been assigned to Aryan now.

IN CONCERT The new besties in tinsel town, Janhvi Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan and her brother Ibrahim Ali Khan attended the Punjabi Singer AP Dhillon’s concert in Mumbai recently. Janhvi went there with a broken arm and still grooved to the music despite the sling. What made bigger headlines however, was the fact that the trio opted to take the iconic Mumbai taxi, the kaali peeli cab home. It sure made the day of the waiting paparazzi, we must say.

FIVE AREAS WHERE DERMAL FILLERS WORK LIKE MAGIC ANTI-AGEING, FILLERS, INJECTIONS Dermal filler injections are currently one of the most popular treatments in the field of medical aesthetics. The injections require no recovery time and provide immediate results! Medical grade filler injections typically consist of hyaluronic acid or collagen, which occur in the skin naturally. They restore collagen that is lost with age, creating an effect that fills in wrinkles & plumps volume in desired areas. Check out this list of 6 common areas where fillers can be used! 1. VOLUMIZE LIPS Despite a frequent association with over filling, lip filler treatments can be easily customized to achieve a subtle enhancement to the natural shape of the lips & to even out the texture by filling in lines & creating symmetry. 2. PLUMP CHEEKS Expertly injected fillers can restore volume & the youthful appearance to the cheeks without the “face freezing” affects that can be associated with Botox. This creates an overall energized & younger looking face without the traditional face lift surgery. 3. FILL IN FOREHEAD LINES Unlike Botox, which temporarily paralyzes muscles to eliminate the movement causing certain wrinkles, fillers reduce the appearance of static lines visible even when the face is at rest. 4.ELIMINATE MARIONETTE LINES & NASOLABIAL

FOLDS Marionette lines are those lines below each corner of the mouth that can significantly add age to one’s face. Fillers can very easily fill in that lost volume in these lines to instantly take years off a face. 5.REDUCE APPEARANCE OF SCARS Marionette Dermal fillers can be used to lessen the appearance of scars & even out the surrounding texture.

he most influential film personality, music and film-producer, Bhushan Kumar’s career has grown from strength to strength over the last two decades. With a whopping 200 million subscribers on YouTube, with a line-up of 30-40 films scheduled to release in 2022 with the biggest names of Bollywood, he rules over the Indian film and music industry. Manju Ramanan chats with the young Mogul who has proven to be chip of the old block. With a whopping 200 M subscribers on YouTube, what is your goal now on the online platform? We have indeed crossed a milestone! We are not only thrilled to be the first ever channel crossing an incredible 200 million subscribers but we hold this pride to put our country first on the global map of entertainment. We’re truly indebted to discerning fans who have always bestowed us with so much love. It reinforces our belief that content is and will always remain king! This success encourages us to up the ante and continue to hone our content and curation every day to better delight our audiences. Your talent pool has moved on and created history. What is your mantra of success? Content is king. I have always maintained that. I credit my success to my father who envisioned this. He taught me the ropes right from when I was a child and I have honed that talent over the years. Good content and understanding what the audience wants is what is key. The audience’s tastes vary from time to time and identifying that is surely the mantra of success in the field of music and film production. The T-Series team is my backbone and I owe a lot to their hard work in terms of marketing each project. An ideal team of young mavericks is what is imperative to produce good content as well. What are the films you are producing in 2022? What about regional cinema? As you know, we are the only production house churning out maximum number of films in the industry and that too across various genres. The year 2022 seems very promising as we have a big slate of films with around 30-40 projects in pipeline. We are aiming to bring the magnum opus Adipurush with Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali January 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 11

Khan with Om Raut at the helm of it which is a 400 crore investment for us. Adding to that we have Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s film with Luv Ranjan, then Animal, a Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s directorial with ensemble cast of Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra. We are also looking forward to release Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon starrer Shehzada which is currently on floors, then we have Ayushmann Khurrana’s Action Hero which is an Anand L Rai directorial. We are also working on Bheed starring Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar which is helmed by Anubhav Sinha, there’s also Vikram Vedha with Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan. The list just goes on. Talking about the regional cinema, even as music producers we have enjoyed working with a fusion of regional languages similarly, in the film space we are currently diversifying and working with some really talented producers and directors in the country. Moreover, our films Radhe Shyam and Adipurush too will be bilingual releases. We understand the importance of regional cinema and music and hence have always made it a point to include these languages in our work. What about OTT content? As a production house, we are making content for OTT releases too. For instance, Atrangi Re will release on an OTT platform. Today this platform is very important given the shift in the audience’s tastes to easily available content which is essentially the basis of OTT platforms. It is the best

and quickest way to reach the three tier cities and the masses. The digital space is very important and we understand that. In the past when we would release CDs and cassettes, it would take roughly ten to fifteen days to make the album available to rural areas. Now it can happen merely with one click. OTT platforms are important in that aspect and we can even see the change for satellite channels. They are now giving equal or maybe even more importance to their OTT counterparts as compared to live television forecasts. It is a parallel platform today to theatres and I am sure that both of them will glow in their own way. Having said that, I understand the importance of OTT content and the audience will surely get to see T-Series’ projects on OTT platforms from time to time. Would we see T-Series launch its own OTT channel as well? How different would it be? I am an ardent lover of the theatrical experience. The joy that a director or a producer gets when their project releases in a theatre and the audience’s reactions to the film is unparalleled. I don’t see T-Series launching an OTT platform anytime soon as we feel now is the time to maintain our top position as the leading production house in India and the biggest YouTube channel in the world. How do you choose your subjects in the films you produce? Like I mentioned earlier, understanding the pulse of the audience is key. Be it music or films, the team at T-Series and myself, we dedicate ourselves to understanding what is the need of the hour. The knack

I don’t see T-Series launching an OTT platform anytime soon 12 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST January 2022

to select the right content to convert into a production by T-Series is what I pride myself in and the results are evident for all to see. My father (the late Gulshan Kumar) had always told me that content is king and to sit back and observe the audience and their wants. I also have the privilege of working with the top film makers and producers in the country such as Om Raut, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Luv Ranjan, Anurag Basu, Nikhil Advani, Aanand L Rai and many more. When such powerhouses reverberate off each other, the end result is truly amazing. Of course there have been times when I have not succeeded in selecting a project that the audience absorbs but that in itself has been a great learning experience. There are 3 things in selecting the subject of a film, hard work, learning from your mistakes and passion. The same passion that my father possessed has been passed down to me and that’s how I have taken his legacy forward and reached where I am today in terms of the content produced from T-Series as a label and production studio. Your family members are in the entertainment and music industry too. How do you motivate them to be independent of your umbrella as well as work with T series? I feel like all of them who are in this space have what it takes individually to make it big. I don’t think I need to motivate them as they all are performing splendidly. My father had always said that it is only hard work that will give you the recognition and accolades that you deserve and I feel they all follow just that, regardless of T-Series. Everyone is performing well outside of the company as well and I am positive they will always do so. What are the setbacks you have encountered and how did you deal with them? There has been quite a learning curve in my graph as a producer. I had started off at a very young age and I have learnt quite a bit in

My father had always said that it is only hard work that will give you the recognition and accolades that you deserve and I feel my siblings follow just that, regardless of T-Series my journey. There have been times when a project has not worked out commercially, as much as I may have expected it to be. In such instances, I sit back and evaluate what, when and where we went wrong and we try to rectify it. There is no text book

to teach one to be a producer, it’s all about learning from your mistakes. Success and failure go hand in hand and if you see any notable personality from any field in the world, everybody has learnt from their failures only to emerge stronger. January 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 13

COVER STORY How did you cope during the pandemic with no films releasing? Did you see a surge in the music business? Surely the pandemic was a big blow to the entertainment industry with no new projects being shot or released in theatres. As a studio, we took the steps that were important to keep the business going at all times. So now, we have a list of films that will be released in theatres and some that were pre-committed to OTT platforms will have a direct to digital run. The decision to release content for different platforms was to ensure that we keep our audiences entertained during the pandemic. As a film and music maker, it was our duty to give the audience what they wanted. Hence our music productions increased tremendously as that was the easiest avenue for us via which we could give the

audience new content and keep them entertained. We released several chartbusters during the pandemic, a lot which were rotating around the audience’s sentiments at the time which is what accelerated our growth and made us the top YouTube channel in the world. What are your learnings from the pandemic? The impact of Covid-19 is indeed devastating and not just me but everyone got to learn something out of it. Obviously while we realized the importance of work-life balance that one needs to maintain – it eventually adds to overall productivity and does have a positive impact on quality of life. So this pandemic like most of all, I was able to devote more of my time to my family. Talking about the work-front, it definitely hit the industry badly and everything was at a standstill; the movies releases were stalled for a long time – though we envisioned some sense of stability time to time however this pandemic taught us to be prepared for the opposite. On a bright side, we saw an upsurge and a shift of content being consumed on digital platform. Our YouTube channel was on its way to becoming a sensation in the world and the audience’s yearn for more content during the last 2 years made us create more and more YouTube content which eventually accelerated our race to becoming the top YouTube channel in the world. From heading T-Series at a young age to being one of the most influential film personalities today - what are the five things you would say you learnt on your journey. Ever since I stepped into the world of production at a young age, it has only been a learning curve for me. I feel my father has passed down his impeccable sense of identifying the right kind of music and that is something which I have honed over the years. Another thing I have learnt is to be observant. Pick up on the current trending lingo or catch phrases. For example, the hook line of the popular Bhool Bhulaiyya song; Hare Ram Hare Krishna was something that I heard in passing and I remember calling Pritam instantly and asking him to use it in a song for the film. Learning from my mistakes too has been an important lesson in my journey as a producer. There are some times when a project does not click the way you expect it to. Instead of being dejected, I analysed the issue and till date I continue to implement what I learnt and that is how the T-Series label has reached where it is.

The hook line of the popular Bhool Bhulaiyya song; Hare Ram Hare Krishna was something that I heard in passing and I remember calling Pritam instantly and asking him to use it in a song for the film.

Lastly, hard work and team work is something that my father always promoted. He had a vision to make T-Series into the biggest film studio in the country in addition to being a music label and that teaching has helped me catapult the company to where it is today. I am grateful that I am able to take my father’s passion forward with my years of experience throughout the journey. What is a day in the life of Bhushan Kumar? Being at the helm of the biggest production house and music label in the country, there is no normal day in my life. Everyday a new curve ball is thrown at me. A day in my life essentially comprises of script readings, brainstorming sessions with my team on casting the right actors for a particular project, giving approvals for the music composed by my artists and a lot more. I like to be absolutely involved in all the productions be it music or films. For instance, I make it a point to visit the sets of a film that is underway, I pick up the phone on my artists and give inputs on songs that they are composing and I have several meetings with the team of each production so that I can overlook its operations. I also make it a point to spend time with my family and take regular holidays so I can dedicate time to them minus work. What are your plans at expansion in 2022? It’s only onwards and upwards for T-Series. My goal is to never stop and continuously explore new avenues, new subjects and new talents. Music is my first love and I will never forget that my father began this company as a music label. His passion was to make it a film studio as well and that is something I worked tirelessly towards. The film slate for 2022 is illustrious with around 30 to 40 productions in the pipeline and underway. T-Series has put the country on the world map and the sky is the limit now. I have many exciting films and music singles in the pipeline which will only add more feathers to our hats. As for expansion plans in particular, we will surely announce it when the time is right! Beauty call

Sonakshi Sinha What is your AM and PM skincare routine?

I’m still trying to figure out a proper skincare routine because I take full advantage of my good genes and my mother’s skin that I have inherited. But the one mantra that I always follow is to never sleep with your makeup on. I try to keep myself hydrated. I’m now trying to get into a nightly moisturising routine. Nothing hectic though. I don’t like messing around with my skin too much.

Five makeup essentials you can’t live without… 

Eyeliner

Matte lipsticks

Concealer

Tinted moisturiser

Eyebrow pencil

Haircare tips you swear by…

First has to be oiling. That’s something I started during the lockdown and it really made a big difference to my hair. I mix coconut and castor oil and it’s really improved my hair quality. Then deep conditioning, maybe once in two weeks if you can. My hair is subjected to a lot more heat and styling, so to prevent damage and make it look healthy, I have to do it.

What’s your AM and PM skincare routine?

I’m not the best at this but when I’m shooting, I’m more regular. However, everyday I wake up, wash my face and put on sunscreen without fail. Maybe twice a month I go to bed for an extended period of time. If I’m tired and haven’t slept, I’ll doze off on my couch and wake up two hours later. But I usually use a nice night cream and a healthy amount of sunscreen in the day.

Five beauty items you can’t live without…

I’m actually big on desi nuskhe. It is my absolute dream to either find an organic, sustainable and ethical beauty brand to invest in or start one myself. Things like Kumkumadi tailam are so good. I guess my essentials would be sunscreen, castor oil that works very well on lashes, eyebrows and lips, Multani mitti to get rid of tan, collagen night screen and rose water as a toner. Basically if you have

these and a healthy bowel movement and a clean gut, your skin glows.

Three skincare tips you swear by…

Let me tell you some great skincare hacks. This is India and there are a lot of things you get for cheap prices here. You will be surprised how expensive they sell haldi as turmeric formula abroad. I swear by Multani mitti, it softens your skin but the trick is to not leave it for too long. Make a thick paste, apply it and wash it off in 4-5 minutes. It’s the best detanning and moisturising thing. Spray rose water later. This is all for normal skin, not oily or dry. Second, if you want a quick fix for the glow and you don’t have time, take a papaya and remove the seeds and rub it on your face for a few minutes till it hardens. It gives you the best glow. It works like magic. Finally, apply potato slices on your under eyes. They work like a bleach. January 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 17

The journey has been incredible, I have seen my downfalls, learnt from them, risen for them, I have seen my best highs, yet I feel there is more to come, more to achieve, become more successful, as there is no end to my creativity. Tell us about your latest collection?

My new collection is inspired from the Baroque and Gothic period which I am showcasing in Dubai Fashion Week 2021. Baroque and gothic traces influence the brand with a design sensibility that is luxurious in aesthetic yet simplistic in style. Creating a neo-Victorian era, we celebrate the grandeur of the past in the present with glamorous and edgy designs. Old world charm comes to life with a new-age magic in dramatic silhouettes, decorative prints and intricate embroideries.

How would you define your style?

I would define my style as comfort with luxury. I love the color black and athleisure.

You complete three decades in the industry soon, how do you reflect on the journey? The journey has been incredible, I have seen my downfalls, learnt from them, risen for them, I have seen my best highs, yet I feel there is more to come, more to achieve, become more successful, as there is no end to my creativity.

What’s been the game-changer for you?

I can’t really say if there is one project, all my projects have been a game-changer for me, I have had different kinds of learnings, experiences with all my projects, and I have just tried to get better with each one.

You’ve been a front-runner when it comes to fashion in Bollywood on screen and off it… How would

you say, has fashion evolved, especially in Bollywood?

Over the years, fashion in Bollywood has changed drastically! They have become more upfront when it comes to trying new styles, silhouettes, patterns and experimenting with looks.

Everyone’s talking about sustainable fashion post pandemic, what’s your take on it? Our brand strongly believes in sustainability, we tend to use fabrics which are less harmful to the environment. We reuse all the leftover fabric which encourages sustainability.

Who have you enjoyed dressing up the most? I have enjoyed dressing up everyone, since they have their own unique sense of style.

Any tricks of the trade you’d like to share with young designers? There is no trick in the trade. It’s just hard work, passion and consistency.

What are the fashion trends you’d predict for the upcoming year?

There is a rising level of awareness about body shape acceptance and body positivity, size-inclusive fashion and gender neutral clothing.Forthcoming trends includes traditional motives woven with silk, light weight lehengas, interplay between color reflection and geometry restoring heirloom pieces reviving techniques with a modernize touch.

T

he year 2021 ended on a high note for Vicky Kaushal. On the personal front there couldn’t have been happier news than that of him tying the knot with the love of his life, Bollywood star Katrina Kaif. The two got married in what can best be described as a fairytale wedding in a private ceremony held at the Six Senses Fort Barwara in Rajasthan on December 9. But not just personally, the

actor had much to celebrate professionally too. Vicky has garnered much acclaim and high praise for his sterling and power-packed performance for his titular role as the great freedom-fighter and revolutionary in Sardar Udham. In between all the excitement, Aakanksha Naval-Shetye caught up with the man du jour for an exclusive chat. Excerpts:

Fearless in his choices, and bold in his convictions, Vicky Kaushal had won hearts with his very first film as the lead, Masaan (2015). When as Deepak, he cried, ‘Yeh dukh kaahe khatam nahin hota’ movie-lovers united with him in his grief. His debut may have been unconventional, but his success story is what dreams are made of. Within a short span of time, the actor has become one of the most bankable stars of his generation bridging that gap of being an actor and a star with successes like Raazi, Sanju and the superhit URI: The Surgical Strike to his credit. Finely balancing that scale of showcasing his brilliant acting chops in meaningful roles as well as being the quintessential Bollywood hero in the truest sense of the word, Vicky proves that he’s easily a cut above the rest. You’ve had a pretty unconventional start in the industry. Unlike most debutants who come in playing larger-than-life roles, you came in as a dependable actor and then moved on to establish yourself as a bankable star and a viable name at the BO… To be honest, early on I was not in a position to choose at all. It was not like in the beginning I had an option that I have a Singham or a Masaan to choose from, and then I chose Masaan. I was fortunate that Neeraj (director Neeraj Ghaywan) gave me an opportunity to be a part of Masaan which was a beautiful story and I thank my stars that I got to start my journey with a beautiful film like that. Also, I think the film industry, as a fraternity and as an audience, together we all were going through this beautiful phase where the lines between parallel and mainstream cinema were blurring. They are really blurred right now, so people don’t mind watching great stories with less popular faces. They take those films back home, appreciate them, they talk about those films, they google out those actors and they really put them on a pedestal. We are also living in a time where the film could be as mainstream as possible but if the audience does not connect with the story, they do not really end up celebrating that film. So I feel it has really become important for us to keep the story as the hero of the film because that’s what the people take back from the film now. I was just fortunate to be entering into this industry at this beautiful bend when it was not just about how fair you are or handsome, or how many abs you have! It was about the relatability that the audience felt they had with your character through your performance and that’s what I

continue to do. I keep striving that whatever roles I do and whatever films I pick up, I look at relating the audience with that film and with that character. You have been fearless when it comes to choosing roles. Like a Raman Raghav or a Manmarziyaan must’ve been a huge risk back then. Has that process of choosing films changed now? I had actually not taken on any role for eight months after Masaan, before Raman Raghav came my way. After Masaan I had been getting a lot of scripts, but all of them were either UP-based or Bihar-based roles. I could understand that post Masaan that kind of role was what most filmmakers saw me in, but I wanted to break that and I waited for an opportunity which would be diametrically opposite to Masaan. And that’s when I got the opportunity to do Raman Raghav. I knew it was a niche film, very dark and not for everyone. But I wanted to showcase that okay there was a Masaan, where I was playing a good guy, now let me attempt a bad guy where it is a fully dark film, but where people would find credibility in that performance. I wanted them to feel that if he can do this and that he might be able to play something in the middle also and that’s exactly what started happening. After Raman Raghav, I started getting a lot of roles between these two. So it’s been my constant quest that I got to play different parts, I get to grow as an actor and get to work and collaborate with filmmakers who would get that good work out of me. So that’s been my quest and it will continue to be so. But with more money riding on you today, is there more pressure of delivering a hit? When it comes to pressure, I actually organically don’t end up taking any. Choosing a film is a very instinctive call, it’s a very impulsive call. Like I hear something, I read something and if I feel affected by it, then I just take the plunge. Of course, there’s a sense of responsibility, like I really wish for my producers to earn back that money and be in a profitable space always, but you can’t perform having that baggage on that shoulder. Once you have signed the film, you have to release all those pressures, do your work honestly and not worry about those pressures.

More than success or failure, what is really important for me is to be rooted. I want to stay connected to my roots all the time, be it my family or my closest friends and that’s what matters to me. That’s where I find my center. January 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 29

INTERVIEW You are on a roll personally and professionally. How much does success matter today? More than success or failure, what is really important for me is to be rooted. I want to stay connected to my roots all the time, be it my family or my closest friends and that’s what matters to me. That’s where I find my center. There’s a famous poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling that goes, ‘If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two impostors just the same... you’ll be a man, my son.” And they really are impostors, so I try to not take any of them seriously, neither success nor failure. That’s how I will keep working and enjoying the process. So for me what’s important is that beyond success and all that is to make sure that I am connected to my roots which fortunately I am and for me that is the meaning of success. What’s the real Vicky like when he’s not the actor on camera? I am just a regular middle-class guy, living with my family in Mumbai. You have once again proven your mettle with Amazon Prime Video’s Sardar Udham, getting into the character and making it your own! I have given it my best. For me it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to play such a part. I think there are so many unsung heroes in our freedom movement who have sacrificed their lives for us to live in a democratic country and it is important for us to keep those stories alive, those legends alive and it’s our small and humble effort to bring such stories to the audiences.

I don’t care if it’s the 100th patriotic film I do, but if it’s a story that’s really touched the chords of my heart, I’ll take the plunge.

What was the process of preparation like? Belonging to a Punjabi family, I have grown up listening to stories about Shahid Bhagat Singh, Udham Singh, Jallianwala Bagh massacre, so there is a familiarity to these great revolutionaries and freedom fighters. Once I got on board with the film, I had some documents from the research team where I got to actually see some archival pictures of Sardar Udham Singh. As there are only a couple of them, I got to see him for the first time and understand the look and the get-up. He used to keep changing his identities and his looks and that was very fascinating for me and eventually for me the process became all about getting his emotional state of mind right and for that I kept falling back to the vision of Shoojit Sircar because eventually it’s his depiction of the freedom fighter. He is the person who’s studied Udham Singh for over two decades. It’s been 21 years since he first wanted to make this film which he couldn’t. And now is when he’s finally been able to make the film and bring it to the audience. So he’s done an in depth research about these great freedom-fighters and I have

30 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST January 2022

30/12/2021 1:54 PM

I feel it has really become important for us to keep the story as the hero of the film because that’s what the people take back from the film now. never met a more knowledgeable and emotionally driven person about our freedom movement. So anything I had a doubt about what Sardar Udham could be feeling or going through I would just fall back to Shootjit, so we just kept exploring that. Since there was no reference point when it comes to specifics like body language, how much of Vicky did we get to see in the role? I’m sure there were some shades of me. Eventually whatever character you play biopic or non-biopic, it comes from you, so every character would have a shade of you. Somewhere you would connect to some emotions ki okay, this is similar to how I am, this is how Vicky Kaushal feels and responds to a situation. But I really have tried to step into the shoes of this freedom fighter whose ideologies were far bigger than even his actions. You seem to have become a poster boy for films based on true events especially patriotic movies… I do get very inclined as an audience when I get to know that a movie is based on true events. I get very excited to see that because I get an introduction into a world that I have not lived and that for me becomes very fascinating. I think that the residue of that excitement kind of falls onto these subjects when I get to hear of them as an actor. So I automatically get very excited about eras like the 1930 or 70s. Somewhere the trigger point is that, but eventually when I hear something I just go by my instinct. I feel that if I get triggered by it, affected by it, emotionally attached to it then I just want to be a part of that story. I don’t care if it’s the 100th patriotic film I do, but if it’s a story that’s really touched the chords of my heart, I’ll take the plunge. The audience too don’t care if they’ve see the genre before. Like Rome-Juliet, it’s a romantic film that never gets old, or comedy films. We never say ‘Oh we’ve done like 100 comedy films so we should stop’. You laugh, you have a good time, and you don’t mind another comedy film. Similarly if it’s a patriotic film and if it touches the right chord in your system, then I don’t calculate too much, I just take the plunge and be a part of that story. What are your upcoming films? I have finished two films last year which will be out this year but I can’t talk much about them now. And there’s Sam Bahadur directed by Meghna Gulzar. January 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 31

Weaving a World of Words Javed Akhtar Over the years whenever Javed Akhtar saab has come to Dubai, I have had the golden chance to speak and interact with him. An institution by himself, he will patiently explain a tough urdu word during a mushaira by translating it for you, enthrall you with his own nazms and shayiri, pause to spin on a word’s rhetoric and pull your leg jocularly midconversation creating a general camaraderie of humour, good will, knowledge and happiness. Here are some excerpts from my interview with the master taken from the back seat of a car while dropping him back to the Hyatt Regency from my friends Irfan Azhar and Deeba Irfan’s home at Jumeirah Park. Javed saab was in Dubai attending the Jash-e-Javed event organized by Jash-e- urdu group where shayars from India and Pakistan were invited. The event also celebrated his and the iconic Shabna Azmi’s 37th wedding anniversary in Dubai. Manju Ramanan

Do you consider today cinema to be today’s literature? I think in the 1940s, cinema and literature were very near to each other. This is true till the beginning of the sixties. The emerging Middle class, that consumes cinema the most, then would have been the third or fourth generation educated masses and they were close to the classics and literature. But after the era of liberalization, there emerged a middle class in overwhelming numbers that was different. They lived a higher quality of life, their children went to good schools were turning towards a better future. In this race, quite a lot of things were lost including the habit of reading and literature. Also, there was a big advent in technology and the focus shifted away towards knowledge and not reading. We know that today, reading habits have declined and we are yet to develop the same relationships with books or works of art, as we used to. We have a keen younger generation waiting to look for more stimuli from the baggage our generation left on the platform. I am not a pessimist. But how many films today are based on classics. On that account, we are still a long way before we say today’s cinema is today’s literature. Is it a challenge to write for a younger generation addicted to social media today? Life has increased its tempo and its fast pace. People won’t accept stories that are slow. We have to be careful yet not surrender to the pace of the modern times. There has been a compromise between speed and depth and one shouldn’t rule another. Also, rhetoric has gone out of fashion. There was time when language was art itself and people would express their art through their control of language with great flourish. Today brevity is the virtue. Saying a 100 different things in ten words is the challenge. But shortening things has its benefits because it cuts out fluff and gets more real. One-liners are more interesting to a population rather than use whole sentences. There is no room for elaborate descriptions or melodrama. Films used to adopt the language of the theatre. Now they adopt the language of the streets. How do you see the rampant trend of biopics in Indian cinema? A shortage of real stories pushes people for biopics. Also, actors cannot be blamed since they can only accept what is offered to them. Biopics give a ring of the truth and real and

reality stories are very important to us. Do you see OTT democratize content? A great development in these days in the advent of OTT. It has not only brought in good content, I believe that this deluge of good content will not remain water-tight for very long. It will start affecting mainstream cinema because the audiences are the same for both platforms. It will push commercial cinema to increase its level of authenticity and reality. Commercial cinema has to up its ante to match the reach and the popularity of OTT.

I don’t believe that all films of the past were good films. People often romanticize of the past era like that. There were good and bad films back then as they are now. I have watched and admired Article 15, Udaan and Masaan films of today

INTERVIEW How do you distinguish a good song from a popular song today? As you are aware that a lot of songs get pushed by sponsorship for its million views etc. So what is popular today need not necessarily be authentic. A good song or a hit song cannot be measured till the time the publicity for the song is withdrawn. If it survives, it is a good song. So many songs come and go without a trace that is why. Today all the music reality show contestants who are in the age group of late teens or midtwenties still sing the songs of the sixties. Why? Why don’t they sing new songs? It is because the hype that is created around a new song might be unreal. Also, it is largely enforced on you through various channels. The moment the sponsorship is gone and you remember it, then it is a popular song. Do you see romance dwindle from Bollywood movies? Romance is getting lost from real life too and that is reflected in movies. Love is there but there is a difference between love and romance. Romance has a drama and dream like quality. It has pining within it, it has distance and the sweet emotion of waiting. Today, with technology, that wall is broken. There is no pining left. You can reach out to your lover or girl-friend easily. Do you think Romeo and Juliet today wouldn’t have texted each other,if they were today’s lovers? There is a big movement in the world of independent Indian music. How do you see it grow? I welcome it with open arms. Good music doesn’t need the vehicle of Bollywood to carry it forward anymore. Shankar Mahadevan and I and a few of our friends have gotten together to start a company called Gun Guna Lo and it will be the Netflix of music. Each shareholder will contribute 4 songs every year. This will be of his/her choice and we won’t interfere with the creative process. About 30-35 members will create a bank of songs of their own choice and it will be on this platform we are creating. The royalty will go to the creator and a tiny part to the company. It has the who’s who of the music world in it and I believe aristes will feel more secure, empowered and free with this initiative.

I am appreciative of what they do. Their standard of good work is very high and they have imposed it upon themselves and aren’t willing to compromise their standards at all. You are such a successful name yet you say that terror motivates you? I m a very lazy man. I keep talaoing my work and when I am dangerously near a deadline, I start to work. Sometimes the work I have done is unimaginable. I have written lyrics while on my way to the recording studio, at the back seat of my car. I am lucky to have made it this far. One day I will get caught! How do you protect your inner space? I will quote the Gita here. Arjun asks Krishna how much should one be involved in life and he gives him the example of a lotus leaf that floats on water. It is wet on one side but the other side is absolutely dry. It signifies attachment and detachment. You need objectivity and subjectivity in a person. While we go through love, friendships and relationships, the other side should watch it with a discerning eye just like you watch an OTT show. So you are both in it and outside it. That is where humour comes from. If you start taking things seriously, you become a very boring person. Also,a little objectivity makes you look at things clearly. There is joy and sorrow in making mistakes but it is inevitable. Just don’t repeat them. Make new mistakes. How do you see content change post the pandemic? It is yet to be seen. We will come out of it slowly because the pandemic is still around. If we write a contemporary script, should we mention Corona or not is the question. What is the protagonists come with masks on their faces. Should be set the story in post or pre- pandemic era. We have had three years of the pandemic. How do we negate that out of our stories.

Two creative people in a marriage that lasted 37 years. How did you manage it? The terms ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ have gathered a lot of moss around them. They are institutions that have coined these terms and the caveats to each. Two people = be it two Are you critical of your children’s work? brothers, sisters, business partners, lovers, can live happily I am critical but by and large they have done excellent work and with each other by respecting and loving each other, looking after themselves, and each other’s respect, their egos and internalizing the reality that the other is as important as them. That the other has the right to dream and pursue it. This is particularly important to men than women. You are not the son and your partner’s life is not meant to orbit around you or spin around your needs. Every person is a star in himself. If we accept that, things are smooth. Also, there is a gross misunderstanding of the word equality. Equality doesn’t mean that both partners will be equal. It means that it shouldn’t be one partner’s privilege to have the final authority. Leadership should move and shift between them as per the situation. What are the films that you would like to see remade today? I have nothing against remakes but if a script has explored his final optimum and flourished, I would leave it alone. But if it hasn’t due to reasons of budget, writing or any other reason and can be improved upon, then why not. I feel that Meri Jung and Arjun can be made better today because my script fell short in the second half I feel. I think it could be improved. I am told that Arth is going to be remade again. It all depends on who is playing Shabana’s role. Any actor who cannot come up to her level will be rejected. So, are you self-critical? You better be. When you are working, you are totally involved, be it a chapter, a poem or a book. Don’t fall in love with what you have written because you might have to be merciless when you edit it. You should be totally unforgiving of your work if it doesn’t match a certain standard. Cut everything out if the impact is not there. The narrative won’t get damaged but you have to be honest to it. 34 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST January 2022

INTERVIEW

I

would have loved to

record with the late Rafi saab says AR Rahman

He smiles his benign smile and shows relief that there is no camera in the room. So, we sit down for an old fashioned print interview where he converses on topics closest to his heart – music, spirituality and philosophy. The maestro spoke to me a day before his concert at the Dubai Expo that was a major hit. The next in line is Why? The Musical, created by Shekhar Kapur and music by A.R. Rahman. Manju Ramanan

Do you find music closest to divinity? I think the music is such a complex thing that if your mind is wavering, you are done. If you are creating a symphony for instance, you have a hundred musical instruments and you have to carry all of them in one song with multiple things happening. I arrange my song myself and so the entire song comes under one source. So, the one-ness of the mind is so imperative to music. When I am travelling or rehearsing and one goes into a zone where there is a unity in your mind, you feel that there is a space that connects you to the divine. So be it musicians who practice Hindu, Muslim or Gospel music, the closest path is the path to experience something that is outwardly There is a soul connect completely. Do you use the same formula for film music? There is always an attempt to derive the music from the higher source and one tries hard. And I tend to gravitate towards that space. But music is like penance. Sometimes you reach there, sometimes you don’t. Ishq Bina for example had a qawaali and bhajan feel to it and some other songs too. One aspires ( Laughs). The real joy for anybody is the mind. Happiness comes from the mind. You might be the best in the world but if your mind is messed up, you cannot enjoy

anything. You might be sitting in the costliest car but your mind is thinking about mortgage, tax to pay or that someone will attack you – is that enjoyment. How do you protect your inner space? The foundation of spirituality and philosophy is how temporary life is. Good people die, so do bad people, so do the beautiful, so do the ugly. When life is so transient, why bother. So, things are chilled out when you think like that. This is the basis of peace. Fame is temporary, so is pain. But how do you nurture ambition within all this. Ambition is a result of people’s love towards your work. You want to give them an experience they haven’t had before. You have a responsibility towards that love they shower on you. Life is to live and to give and that makes you who you are. Hariharan jee told me that what you see about AR Rahman is just a tip of the ice-berg. He works immensely behind the scenes too? That is so kind of him. The process comes from the experience of learning and unlearning, whether it is arrangement or composition. Sometimes, the mind tells you I forgot to do this or that, so the working behind the scene helps. Sometimes it is just the vibe and you know it is right. Poet and lyricist Irshad Kamil and you performed together recently

during the promotions of Atrangi Re? Even though Urdu or Hindi is not my mother tongue, there is a fascination towards it. A simple line in urdu appeal to me or falls flat. The vibration of the sound of the word is very different than Tamil so I try to grab it there. Sometimes I use the same formula in Tamil, to grab the vibration of the word. We had a good jamming session. During your concerts, when you perform to your sufi numbers, the energy changes magically. Yes, that creates another magic. Whenever I do that it gives us all a great sense of joy that is vast and abundant. Spiritualty is free for everyone. You can just close your eyes and you are connected to the universe. It brings a sense of unconditional love and surrender. The deep feeling when you are singing a bhajan, gospel or a qawwali zones you out of the earthly realm. I always feel that let us do something special instead of doing it for the sake of it. Also, the bar is set so high of this genre by artistes such as Hridaynath Mangeshkar etc that is it blasphemous to not attempt something spectacular. But we have seen the amalgamation of sufi poetry, music and philosophy in a modern setting. Rockstar for instance? Rockstar wasn’t work. We were just enjoying the process. Post Oscars, the expectation were very high and we decided to not do something usual. Between Imitiaz Ali and me there was a great synergy of give and take. There was no ego there like I had experienced in the last two decades where the directive was to follow the brief. Here we were all seekers. Now it is more about travel, the search within and seeking. Each director be it Imitiaz Ali, Maniratnam, Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra or Aanand Rai triggers something different within me. Are you happier the way all your songs are picturized. Can you detach from a composition at all? I am not that commercial minded when it comes to storytelling. Sometimes the song with dancers are part of the screenplay like Aanand rai does – a song that take the narrative forward. And is some movies, the song just appears like a item song. I want to be as naïve as possible in this respect and don’t want to get smart. If I knew the formula, then my creativity wouldn’t thrive. If I knew that there was a formula that works then my mind would be trapped with that hook word or a tune. So, there wasn’t another song like Sadda Haq or Phir se Ud Chala. When you go off-track, you experiment and come up with a whole new thing. Sometimes if you get too experimentative, you might lose the connect. That is why when it is a film, there are people to tell you what works and what doesn’t. in Thalli Pogade, for instance the word comes at the very end. And we did a whole version where we start with the word but it didn’t work. So we went back to the original. It is quite a unique song that way. Do you see that a song has its own destiny? Yes, it does. While making it, you know something is happening. So, I tell the producer, I would need some more time. It happened with songs such as New York Nagram or Taxi Taxi, and Talli pogade. Sometimes your instinct takes over. How do you dissociate with a song you have created? I let it go. If I was attached then I wouldn’t have made not more than 5 albums. As for remixes, I stand by fans who believe that why corrupt their memory of a song that they love. Remix is an art and it depends on what you take to remix. Don’t take something very recent. If you went back to the masters from Bollywood, who would you have to loved to record?

Mohammed Rafi saab anyday. I have been lucky to work with Ashaji and Lataji. In fact, I secretly recorded Lukka Chuppi with Lataji. It was designed for me to sing with her. Films on music you have enjoyed watching The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Mughal e Azam, Alaap (Yesudas sang all the songs). Has an actor inspired to create a song in a certain way? Dhanush has a way of using English and Tamil in his mannerisms , so the songs that I have composed on him might have that effect. Even Rajni sir has this uniqueness. He has these quotes and one-liners and they are so powerful. Even Singa Penne picturized on actor Vijay is like him – he has a certain energy about him that I have tried to capture through song. You have said that when you mentor, you learnt too. What did you learn from the Firdaus gang? They are perfectionists and usually are so musically literate that they keep the score in front of them and can read off them like a newspaper. Most trained musicians do that. But these girls asked me to give them some more time and they played without the score in front of them. They internalized it. That was very touching. Tell us about Why? The Musical! Why? The Musical will follow the story of a curious young girl and a wise old man in a dynamic spectacle that will take audiences on an incredible journey of discovery, while also instilling empathy towards our planet and inspiring action to create a cleaner, safer, healthier world. The show, which aims to stir visitors’ emotions and draw on a childhood thirst for knowledge, will include seven of my compositions, two of which were launched on 22 December during my concert at Expo 2020. Lyrics have been created by Sohaila Kapur, Dana Dajani and Shivang, with Artists in Motion leading the production. The musical features more than 100 dancers, musicians and performers in a 45-minute production that includes stunning visuals on the world’s largest 360-degree projection screen. It showcases the vibrant and burgeoning arts scene of Dubai and the UAE, and exemplifies Expo 2020’s role in promoting creativity and fostering global cultural cooperation by bringing together the best storytellers, composers and creatives from across the planet. “Wisdom starts with curiosity and, together, they provide hope and inspiration for a better future.” January 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 37

INTERVIEW to the prestigious location and the quality of the hotel. When and how did you start your journey with beauty? I am always passionate about beauty and every woman wants to maintain herself, I saw that Dubai was lacking this because I couldn’t go to one place where I was contented. I wasn’t happy with any salon that I went to. Even if they had, someone was good at hair, they wouldn’t have someone who was good at makeup or nails. As an entrepreneur there is always constrain of time. If you can do everything within two hours, of course it’s better for you. Otherwise, you have to be on your toes to move from one place to another. Eventually it was my friends who convinced me to take the leap: I said OK maybe I should do something like this for me so I can be happy and then my friends could use it as well, this is how I started my journey in the beauty Industry. I initially started the first branch in 2015 with a small salon but the location was very good in Emirates Hills at Address Montgomery’s I started there and I called it Laloge. I wanted to create the feeling of a private dressing room where a performer will go and transform themselves before a show. So, she will enter as a normal woman and then she will emerge as a superstar.

Beauty On the Rise Reem Abou Samra is no stranger to the beauty and fashion world of Dubai. The owner of Laloge salon and a social media influencer herself, she tells Manju Ramanan how looking good adds to your confidence meter, any age, any shape or size you are! We agree! You were looking for a high-end salon that would make you look like a star and then you created your own. Tell us about the first step? I have a passion for beauty. I love the self -confidence that it gives a woman when she has just walked out of the salon with a new haircut and color and a fresh set of nails. Every woman wants to look and feel their best and I noticed that there was a gap in the space between a luxury spa and a salon. Spas have traditionally offered the ultimate luxury but are generally very expensive, whereas salons have never offered the same level of luxury and relaxation. I wanted to change this by giving the best of both – the luxurious feel and service of a spa, but with the affordability of a salon. When you combine these two ingredients, you can’t really go wrong. To launch a business in beauty, to me, it was such a natural step and progression. I have always been obsessed with the feeling when you leave a beauty salon. The confidence that you feel when you know that you look good… it’s something you cannot explain or put into words easily. For me, I like to socialize a lot and I would always have my hair and makeup done before going out, plus of course nails and facials, So the natural development from this, was to employ the team that I loved and start my own salon. Where all are your salons located and how many people do you work with? We have currently 6 luxurious locations. We always look for partnerships with brands that hold the same values as we do. A love of great service, attention to detail and luxury. This is why we have chosen the venues that we have. Address Downtown, Downtown is our newest location, then we have Address Montgomerie, Emirates hills, Address Boulevard, Downtown, Address Sky View, Downtown. As Four out of the six locations are located in the Address Hotels, it shows the strong bond that we have. In addition, Mandarin Oriental is one of the most elegant and beautiful locations on the Jumeirah beachfront and Caesar’s Palace Bluewater’s was a perfect fit for us too, both due

You are a social media influencer too. How do you manage the various roles of your life? When you love what you do and have a passion for it you have the energy to balance, the secret is love and passion. Your intention also must be right and pure and your aim must be to influence or impact people to do the right things in a positive way. Then the universe will support and provide you with the necessary energy to make things possible for you in the most efficient manner. What are the 3 lessons you learnt in the beauty business - that you remember always? Never stop investing in yourself. Learn as much as you can and soak up the knowledge that is right in front of you. People invest in stocks and shares because they want a return on their investment, to see their money grow. But many, fail to see the return on investment by investing time in your own self and learning process. Do something that you truly love. If you are truly passionate about something it will naturally shine through in everything that you do. This is contagious and everyone around you and your business will feel this also. Create balance. You need to have a good work/life balance in order to be at your best when it comes to decision making. It also helps to have the support of your loved ones, who can’t support you if you are not working as a family unit. What change have you brought to the beauty industry in the UAE? We have brought the salon in the fore front to international standards in UAE in elegance, professionalism etc we are in process of certification from international bodies as an ISO certified salon and for Laloge customer service is a major thrust in business, and we ensure there is no comprise on that, we have a special designated team who work diligently to take regular feedbacks and make sure they are a happy customer. How important is it to love yourself? All that I do in beauty and in the field of business is an expression of me loving myself and I see all customers have the same feeling and are satisfied and happy every time they step in and out of the salon. It is very important to love oneself as that shows in every aspect of work they do in the most positive manner. What according to you is beauty? Beauty is being like nature for every expression in nature there is a uniqueness which contributes to the World of nature, we as a part of nature we must imbibe the and furnish the same in each aspect of our life.

Bochenko meets me at the Oberoi Hotel where she is part of a children’s event for Christmas. She walks in a white long dress paired with a long jacket inspired by the abaya. Bochenko worked with Roger Moore in the Moonraker and when the film celebrated its 50th year, even recorded a song with Moore himself. The first time even that James Bond appeared in a song with a Bond girl. Manju Ramanan speaks to the glamour model turned actor who found her true calling with music.

“Being the Bond girl was not a job. It is a defining moment of my career but I found my true calling after that. I became a song writer and singer and wrote for very big French artistes and carved a career in music,” says Bocheko. And why is she in Dubai? “My son who is an engineer works here and I have come to visit him. Also, I’m planning to expand my music career and wouldn’t mind looking at the UAE to do more work,” says the Polish French artiste. Ask her about Roger Moore and how was her interaction with the then Mr Bond and she says she was too shy around him back then. “I was too young and very respectful of Roger Moore. Though as a model, I had travelled the world – to Venice, Brazil and Argentina and had never seen such a massive set in France that I had seen of the Bond movie. Once, very shyly I approached him with my camera for a photo and he was very cheerful and kind about it,” she states. Bocheko also wrote to Bond’s manager on the 50th anniversary of Moonraker since she planned to tribute the film with a song. She wrote to him about recording a duet with him in her music video and in an hour he replied. “Of course,” he said. “He gave me a beautiful gift. Never has James Bond appeared recorded a song with a Bond girl,” she says. The Bond girl as we know is no ordinary girl. She epitomizes beauty, body and desire most of all. “I have moved way from that kind of objectification. I found my passion in music apart from acting and started singing and doing concerts in Europe. I sing in French and English since my dad was French and my mother was Polish.” Bochenko states that she had the most beautiful parents in the world who always supported her ambition and dreams. What about the OTT space?” I have been proposed things but it doesn’t interest me. What I am looking for is a live performance where I get to interact with the crowds. Also, I am fond of Bollywood music. I will be happy to collaborate with talent from India in Dubai.” Bochenko grew up as the only sister among four brothers and has deep respect for women. “I wrote and shot a song on 50 women from across the world and I am waiting to perform it in Dubai.”

FLAWLESS MASTERSTROKES! A WELL-KNOWN NAME IN THE INDUSTRY, FOR PROFESSIONAL CELEBRITY AND BRIDAL MAKE-UP ARTIST AISHA SIDDIQ LAKHIYA, MAKE-UP IS AN ART THAT BRINGS OUT THE CREATIVE BEST IN HER. WITH FACE AS HER CANVAS, THE MASTER MAKE-UP ARTIST TRANSFORMS PERSONALITIES WITH A FEW STROKES OF HER BRUSHES. IN A CANDID CHAT WITH AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE, AISHA TALKS ABOUT THIS PASSION WHAT DO YOU MOST LIKE ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION? Art has always been my passion, be it any form. Make-up is art for me. I love playing with colors, creating different looks, working with different faces eye shapes excite me. It’s never boring, never monotonous is what I like the most. TELL US YOUR FIVE BASIC RULES FOR MAKE-UP? • Always prep and prime your skin with a good moisturizer or primer. • Use color corrector and not concealer for any pigmentation or dark spots. • Always use a wet sponge to blend foundation. • Always use a wet brush for upper eyelid eyeshadow. The color will be more pigmented. • Always use a mascara before applying lashes.

WHICH MAKE UP ASSIGNMENT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING FOR YOU? HOW DID YOU ACCOMPLISH IT? Recently I worked with Dubai Fashion Week Russian edition as an official backstage make-up partner. I had a team of 30 makeup artists. We were working with 10 Designers and around 80 models for four days. It was pretty challenging as there was language barrier, every designer had a specific look for their show, there were time limits, lots of madness and chaos but I am proud of my team and their hard-work and patience that everything went well. They loved our work and as they say all’s well that ends well. I ran the whole show as a lead. I call it my biggest achievement till now. Also working with some of the most popular Bollywood stars for the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night was an experience I will always cherish. AS A MAKE-UP ARTIST WHAT IS THE ABSOLUTE MUST-DO AND DON’T THAT YOU ADVICE NEWCOMERS? I would advise them not to set any rules. Make mistakes and learn from them. Experiment with different products, try different techniques, educate yourself about different brands, don’t set boundaries, be fearless and remember you can always wipe off if you go wrong. Free your hand and you shall master the skill and yes don’t depend your makeup on filters. IF YOU COULD WORK ON ANY STAR WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? WHAT LOOK WOULD YOU PLAN? As a makeup artist, I wish to work with many celebrities and create looks for them, but if there’s one I would love to work with, it’s Deepika Padukone. She is so charming but I don’t see her experimenting a lot with her looks. If I get a chance, I would plan a bold look for her, she has beautiful big eyes so I would like to see the pop of color on eyes with glossy lips, dewy look and some playful hairstyles.

Urfi Javed - Make- up by Aisha

WHAT MAKE UP TRENDS DO YOU PREDICT FOR 2022? The pandemic has turned the trends upside down. People have now become comfortable in their own skin and laidback looks. I believe 2022 will be more about skincare than make-up. In make-up, I would say it would be more on natural, nude, subtle and matte side. I predict the emphasis would be on eyeliners, black and coloured and its different strokes.

in food!

Yogi, owner of the popular lounge Haveli, talks to Aakanksha Naval-Shetye about bringing together the passion for films, food and fun music all under one roof One of the most-loved and popular desi hangouts in Dubai, Haveli recently completed one year and celebrated the success with a big bash. And the owner of this hip and happening night-hotspot, Yogi couldn’t have been happier. “It was a passion that took the shape of Haveli,” he shares as we catch up with him at his lounge. Excerpts from the interview: Passion project Inspite of it being a weekday, the place is filling up fast we point out and the vibe is infectious. “It’s crazy on weekends,” he reveals beaming with pride. With no formal training in the F&B industry, and yet running this ship expertly, Dubai-bred Yogi reveals that the secret lies in loving what you do. “I started very early in life doing odd sales and marketing jobs and then doing it on more professional level. But at one point, I had to make a choice of continuing to doing that or pursuing something on my own. Being a party person myself, I have always loved nightlife here. So, I thought of having this place where people could enjoy good food and music. That’s how Haveli was born,” adds Yogi.

With the quirky take on popular film dialogues and much-heard desi catch-phrases, Haveli is a slice of Bollywood in Dubai. “It was a concept that I was very clear about right from the start. Every desi relates to this. See, there are a few things that connect us all, they are films, food and fun music and we have combined the three to offer them a great dining and partying experience,” he explains. “In fact, the name itself is a take on the popular dialogue, Aao kabhi Haveli pe,” he adds.

Live band. Called a pioneer of the Live Music concept in lounges in Dubai, for Yogi, music has been integral to the start of Haveli. “Music has always been an important part of my life. In fact I remember that I had this Live Band concept in my mind for a good six months, but none of the clubs or lounges were ready back when I wanted to start. In 2017 there was no culture of Live music in Dubai. Most of the places then were focused on food and the DJ playing music. But this one has a different vibe, so I was very particular about having live music play. It becomes so much more engaging and I love to see my patrons join them and have fun with the songs. Live music changes the vibe of the place and I’m very picky about the music being played,” says Yogi. We can’t help but notice the name Haveli too has strong musical connect with the mic and instruments used in the brand name. Also their menu cards are made to look like Vintage Vinyl Records. A music-lover himself, Haveli even has a karaoke room. “Yes, we want people to enjoy themselves completely, so for small groups, its ideal. They can sing, watch matches and just chill.”

Music has always been an important part of my life, so I was very particular about having live music play. It becomes so much more engaging and I love to see my patrons join them and have fun with the songs. busy clicking pics between their bites. Yogi himself goes and meets the patrons on their tables, many of who are regulars and know each other on a first name basis by now. “By God’s grace, anyone who comes here once, often ends up being a regular, so I know most of them by their names now. As for me, I am here each day, from 6 pm to 3 am in the morning,” he admits. “For me it’s not work, it’s all very exciting. Seeing happy faces, makes working fun.” Creativity at its best Not just the names of the foods, the dishes themselves come with amazing and surprising twists. Like their Pav Bhaji fondue called ‘So Fond of You Fondue’ and the popular Indian-style noodles but cooked with a twist and served with paratha, ‘Will You Maggi Me’! “We have given a twist to most of the simpler dishes too and we experiment, try to gauge what works with the regulars and we recently upgraded our menus too based on their choices. So we know that the basic flavours are desi but with fun twists. Also a lot of thought process has gone behind the names too as we want them to stand out and represent the creativity in the dishes too.” Theme nights Haveli also has its special theme nights planned out, among which is the very popular and hit Ladies Night Out. “It’s a hit concept that lets the ladies come and just chill, let their hair down and have a good time. So we have special discounts for them too,” says Yogi. USP “From the karaoke, to the theme nights, from serving the yummiest dishes on their platters to the fun vibe, Instagram spots, quirky decors, we ask Yogi what is the place’s USP and he says, “Definitely a combination of all, but the big draw is the music too. We are the only ones with the Live band playing relatable music and our patrons love that.” Vision ahead “Well, Dubai already has one of this. So instead of wanting to grow locally, we hope to branch out globally. It’s too early to get going on it immediately, but yes that’s the long term plan,” shares Yogi. 46 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST January 2022

FOOD REVIEW hot’ – smoky puris filled with chicken tikka and the perfect chaat masalas. Then there’s also ‘Olive you so much’ which is like Chicken tikka really well-marianted in olives. Served in adequate quantity, the starters can be very filling. So for the main course we opted for their star dish, ‘Coal for the Soul’ – a butter chicken preparation with garlic naan. Served with a black-coloured gravy, the twist will leave you surprised, but the taste will tempt you to have more! All these amazing dishes were rounded off with the dessert ‘Never say no to ‘Quinoa’ – a delicious preparation of quinoa in condensed milk with a tangy orange flavor. Their drinks variety is equally amazing. The foods were fresh and cooked to perfection. The chef definitely gets brownie points for the creativity in food without compromise on taste. One of the plus points were the spices. It’s easy to go overboard with the hot quotient when it comes to snacks, but they have got it just right. Ambience Just like the food, this is one segment that they score very high on. With several instagrammable spots, vibrant feel and the Bollywood vibe, it’s perfect for that fun night out with friends.

Haveli

Service The service was prompt and staff courteous.

A desi haven for food-lovers! Planning a fun night-out with friends, head to Haveli for one of the best dining experiences, writes Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

Step into Haveli and it’s easy to figure how the place got its name! Celebrating Bollywood kitsch culture unabashedly, this desi haven is bound to resonate with the filmi-keeda in you! Neon-lit popular film dialogues and catchphrases adorn the wall, while the LIVE music adds to the vibe. They even have a VIP area for their celebrity guests and a soundproof karaoke room too. And the main hero, the dishes with their quirkiest names and unique twists in flavours that are served on your platter too complement the décor and ambience perfectly well.

Verdict Centrally located in Dubai, at The Atrium, Al Habtoor City, the place instantly transports you to Mumbai. The place though large and vibrant, has a crowded feel to it. Also it would be advisable to book ahead, because even though we went on a weekday, the place was packed and buzzing, clearly it’s a favourite with many. Their creative takes on regular foods are clearly a hit. Overall, it’s not just a dine-out, it’s a fun experience that’ll have you coming back for more. So take their word and ‘Aao kabhi Haveli pe’!

Food An Indian cuisine on their menu, with Indo-Italian and Indo-Chinese add-ons, they have a rather huge variety to choose from especially in the starters section. And their innovative names make the choices all the more interesting. We started off our evening with a round of their popular starters - ‘Light ‘N’ Crisp’ (Crispy spinach fritters drizzled with curd, chutney and masalas). They really were perfect as starters, light and crisped to perfection just like the name suggests. Definitely a must-try. Among the other starters that we quite enjoyed are ‘You’re the Idli of my eye’ a unique twist of the South favourite with desi Chinese flavours, and their baby samosa version, ‘We got fillings for you’. For the meat-lovers, we’d recommend their ‘Taco dirty to me’ – again a lovely twist of mini uttapams served taco style with the yummiest meat fillings and their ‘Pop it like it’s

As an upcoming brand, “exceeding expectations” has been the primary motto since its inception. Who is your mentor in the business world? I would say that for being successful, a person has a lot of mentors in the business world; however, I work on a very simple principle...Dream, Seek, Achieve. First, I am incredibly thankful to the Almighty for blessing me with supportive parents. For any businessman, it’s essential to rely on our ability and have a team that trusts you and your plans. I have a very hardworking and qualified team working with me round the clock here in Dubai and back in India, motivating me to take more significant leaps in the business arena. What is the thing that you make sure that all your customers enjoy while visiting your restaurants? As the famous saying goes, “Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten”, I believe that quality service is fundamental for customer satisfaction and the

success of any FNB business. The food that we serve is delicious and presentable. We have an expansive variety of cuisine on our menu suitable to touch the taste-buds of the multi-national customers that we engage with. I have made great efforts to add a personalized touch to all my signature dishes. We endeavor to make sure that we give our best to make the experience of the visit worth remembering. What is your advice for those who are planning to open their own project? My sole advice is if you are confident of the service and quality you can deliver on day one, you can provide the same for years. Then this is the industry to jump in. A cafe or a restaurant can attract customers at one time with a pleasing ambience. But, if the service and quality continue to be the same, the definable customer becomes a regular customer. Besides, UAE is one of the best places to work. If you are looking to establish a business away from home, this is the place. “A home away from home”. Why did you choose UAE for your business? Personally, Dubai was always a dream destination for my business. UAE connects the world and it’s one of the safest and best country for entrepreneurs. The norms and the government support here are helpful for business development. The visionary leaders of UAE made working in Dubai so easy and enjoyable, even for expats arriving here from across the world.

FOOD REVIEW Desserts This part is for those with a sweet tooth. For our chocolate cravings, we ordered the ‘Deadly by Chocolate’ cake it’s a mouth-watering, irresistible dish. This cake comes with vanilla ice-cream and is rich with nuts and chocolate flavor. For our second dessert, we decided to go desi and ordered Jalebi, crunchy, sweet and luscious dish from India. Ambience and Staff The ambience is cozy and so is the music. The service was fast and the staff was friendly! Quantity Each dish comes well-balanced and we would say the quantity served per dish is on the generous side for two people.

The Sheesha Factory All things fun under one roof! If you are looking for a new place to enjoy your time with your friends, The Sheesha Factory in Oud Metha might be the place you are looking for. Hanan Yehia and Aadharika Gandotra visited the restaurant and here’s what you need to know about it!

Beverages We started with the ‘Popcorn Milkshake’. All popcorn lovers will definitely enjoy this drink that has a mix flavor of caramel and salted popcorn. The second drink was the ‘Unicorn Coffee’ the ombré colors of this drink will kindle your curiosity to know how it tastes, but, the taste is pure coffee with some candy flavor. For those who love fruits, the ‘Strawberry Colada’ is your drink! Rich with the real strawberry flavor and it’s an explosion of tastes! We completed the drink tour with the virgin ‘Saudi Champagne’. The Main Course We ordered the ‘Thai Curry Pasta’ which is a treat for all seafood lovers. This pasta comes with prawns and is flavorsome. The ‘Italian Chicken Tikka’, melts in the mouth with cheesy creamy flavor. We tried the ‘Hong Kong Chicken Rice’, which has both flavors of spicy and sweet. The serving is enough for two to three people! we enjoyed the famous ‘Punjabi Samosas’ that were crunchy and delicious.

INTERVIEW

The Triumphant Life! From moving to Dubai in his early 20’s with nothing but dreams of making it big here, to becoming a leading force in the oil and gas industry, Founder and Chairman of PetroGas Piping, Nazimuddin Mohammed’s journey has been an inspiring one. In an exclusive interview with Aakanksha NavalShetye, Nazim as he is fondly called, talks about success and fulfilling his dream of building a solid infrastructure that enables oil companies to look at them and Dubai as a globally-recognized distribution house at par with international companies

I

Tell us about your journey to the top? came from humble beginnings in India and moved to Bahrain when I was very young with the sole purpose of finding a way to actualize my dreams in Dubai. I moved to Dubai in 1972 with a very specific vision in mind and started working on oil rigs when I arrived. My journey hasn’t always been easy which I am sure comes as no surprise, and after a few ups and downs, I found myself working in an industry that I really enjoyed and thrived in, which is the oil and gas industry.

Under your able leadership, what are the biggest changes that the sector has seen in the past decades? When I first started in Dubai, the city was a transit point within my industry. Earlier, most of the oil companies used to depend on European, American and Japanese distribution houses for supplies and one of my visions was to make Dubai a stocking hub for clients globally. Over the decades, we have built a solid infrastructure with world-class service, quality and delivery systems that enabled oil companies to look at us and Dubai as a globally-recognized distribution house that is at par with international companies.

The UAE, and Dubai in particular, are one of the few places in the world What do you think of UAE as a business destination? I would struggle to put into words the amount of respect I have for the UAE and our leadership. The UAE, and Dubai in particular, are one of the few places in the world which champion innovation, growth and entrepreneurship to such high levels. Recent changes in the law have made it even easier for our new generations to set up businesses and over the past 50 years, I have seen the country grow to allow people with different skill sets set up shop here. How did you tide over the challenges of COVID in the past year? COVID has been a difficult time of course, but it has also been an opportunity to strategize and explore new options for growth. With the right mindset, you can turn disadvantages to your advantages. This is what we did with our business and from a personal point of view, I took the time at home to connect with my family and strengthen our bonds with each other. Tell us about your family life? My wife and I have two sons and one daughter and all three are involved in the family business. I also have six lovely grandchildren, two daughters-inlaw and one son-in-law, all of whom live in Dubai and who I am very proud to call my family. We get together on most Friday afternoons for lunch and while the lunches tend to be large and noisy with all the children running around, I smile and count my blessings to know I have them by my side at all times. How do you maintain that work – personal life balance? I have a true passion for my work and for my personal life and I am lucky to have a supportive wife who through the years made my progress easy and stood by me. We now enjoy a happy social life with our friends and family and I make sure I make the time for all the aspects of my life.

which champion innovation, growth and entrepreneurship to such high levels. Besides, work, what are your other interests? Anyone who knows me well knows that I love to sing and it is my way to de-stress! I have always enjoyed singing and I’m happy to say that I have a few friends who enjoy joining me too! If there was one advice you would have to give to your 20-yearold self, what would it be? As a 20-year-old, he had left home for greener pastures and while he didn’t know what the future would hold or how he would get there, he knew he was going to make his dreams happen. I would tell him to explore the market and seize opportunities as they come without fear. Learn from those around you and have a clear vision and execution plan and stay true to this vision. If you had an alternate career to choose from, what would it have been? It is very difficult for me to imagine an alternative career as oil and gas runs in my blood and I feel very passionate about what I do. If I wasn’t doing what I am right now, I’m sure I would’ve found a similar industry but within the same vein of entrepreneurship. What would your advice be to young professionals? It is of the utmost importance to work hard, have a dream and figure out ways to make that dream come true. Also, I would remind the younger generations that no one can make your dream come true except for yourself. Someone can help, support and advise you but ultimately, it is only you who can take it forward, implement it and make sure it happens. January 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 51

LADY WITH THE MAGICAL TOUCH! Licensed and certified celebrity make-up artist, hairstylist and educator Abeeha Mamoon is also the first Asian to win the UAE Bridal Make-up Championship. In an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the renowned make-up artist talks about creating magic with her make-up brushes

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE PROFESSION? As far as I can remember I’ve always been fascinated by beauty, visual story-telling and creative conceptualisation. While searching for a career that would allow me to combine all these things, I decided to study Make-up Artistry and became a freelancer in 2017. WITH THE FIERCE COMPETITION - BLOGGERS, YOUTUBERS… HOW DO YOU STAY AHEAD OF THE CURVE? I’ve worked really hard in my field and I’ve earned my spit in the sun with dire hard work. I do not compete, I believe in my hard work and keeping my focus. AMONG THE NAMES YOU HAVE WORKED WITH, WHICH ONES HAVE YOU ENJOYED THE MOST? I’ve enjoyed working with almost all of them but if I’ve to name some, they would be Sir Vivian Richards, Tony Kakkar, Heli Daruwala, Anil Kapoor, Urvashi Rautela, Mansha Pasha, Maniesh Paul, Salman Khan, Sunil Grover

and Sonya Hussain. I had really liked doing the make-up for Daisy Shah at the Filmfare Achievers Night and was thrilled with the compliments she got for her looks and performance. WHAT IS THE ABSOLUTE MUST-DO AND DON’T THAT YOU ADVICE TO FOLLOW AS A RULE IN MAKE-UP? Skin care and the selection of the right shade, undertone of the foundation is a must-do. No one needs a face covered with layers of foundation. Avoid excess products. WHAT IS THE ADVICE YOU’D GIVE TO ASPIRANTS? Be fearless, believe in your abilities, surround yourself with positivity and fellow artists who are moving in the same direction and who inspire you. You’re influenced by those closest to you, so choose wisely and if you ever have business questions or need motivation, these people are in the same or similar industry and can give you a view from their perspective. Evolution is the process of nature, new talent always find its place. Commitment to work and stay humble. Perseverance commands success. WHAT’S THE ONE LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT AS A PROFESSIONAL? Be patient and have faith in yourself. If you’re honest and hardworking, good will definitely come your way. WHAT MAKE-UP TRENDS DO YOU PREDICT FOR 2022? No make-up look is back and here to stay. People will be forfeiting a complicated slow beauty and let their natural skin texture shine through.

On a musical high! Singer - DJ Kimi talks to Aakanksha Naval-Shetye about her passion for music Tell us about your journey in the music industry, when did you decide to become a DJ? Music is in my blood! I was exposed to music very earIy on as I was born in the family of Bollywood artists Dinesh Hingu and Harish Hingu. So music has been a part of my life right since my childhood. I used to have my shows as a singer, and then in 2015 I learned to be a DJ as I have always been interested in remixes. So I thought of combining both my loves – singing and remixing - and today I’m probably the only DJ in Dubai who is a singer as well. What music do you enjoy playing the most? I enjoy playing Bollywood music the most.

What are your most memorable gigs or events? I would say, my most memorable gigs have been the ones I did in 2016 at Halol India, then in 2019 for New Year at ND’s Bollywood Studio and also the Rak Bin Majid Holi events. How do you look at competition? I never look at any competition as such. I trust my own art and believe that there’s always room for you if you are talented. Who are the music artistes you follow and what’s on your music list? I follow Nucleya, and also AR Rahman is an absolute favourite. My music list is more of Bollywood songs and some Arabic and English. If not a DJ, you’d be… Still a singer! I love the process and have loved creating my songs. January 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 57
