A Brave New World

A

s Dubai welcomes people from across the world with strict Covid restrictions and social distancing in place, we at Starz Media, (the parent company of Filmfare Middle East), have just concluded the region’s biggest digital talent hunt - Mai Dubai presents Arab Asia Starz Season 2. The well-attended ground event, one of the few events in Dubai, felicitated the young, the brave and the raring to go millennial population. Judges Elli AvrRam and Zareen Khan who were to fly down to the event, couldn’t make it because of Covid restrictions, but they gracefully addressed the audience through a pre-recorded video. We also launched the Filmfare ME first ever digital cover that had Elli on it. The Swedish beauty was enamored of Bollywood right from the moment she watched Devdas and decided to learn Indian dance – she is trained in Bharatanatyam and Kathak and learnt Hindi as well. Check out her cover and her interview on www.filmfaremiddleeast. com where she tells us how and Indian family who she was close to, named her “Krishna.” On the July 2021 cover, we have the vivacious Alaya F, who won the Filmfare award for Best Debut this year for her film Jawaani Jaaneman. The young sensation is the daughter of actor Pooja Bedi and the grand-daughter of Protima and Kabir Bedi. Alaya spoke to me about how each member of her family has inspired her to do better. What is more, she discussed both her grand-parents memoirs. Protima Bedi ‘s Time Pass was compiled by Pooja Bedi after Protima passed away tragically in a land slide a few years ago and Kabir Bedi’s recent book Stories I must Tell: The Emotional Life of an actor, Kabir Bedi has been lauded widely. For a video interview of Alaya F, do check out the Filmfare Middle East onYou Tube. As the temperatures soar and we are 100 days to the Dubai Expo (at the time of writing this editorial), the busy Filmfare ME team are busy putting together their next big event, details of which will be revealed soon. I met actor Shishir Sharma in Dubai. The veteran actor has been part of memorable movies such as Talvar and the recent Raazi was visiting his daughter in Dubai. So were music composers Sachin-Jigar who spoke to me about how the rich culture of Gujarat, their home state influences their music. Do check out our story on the Golden visa that was awarded to expatriates in the UAE and their responses to the move. In 2017, I co-wrote a play with actor and producer, Tall Tales Production, Asad Raza Khan titled ‘Just Like That (JLT)’ and it won accolades galore. The play is being staged again on July 8th and July 10th at The Theatre, Mall of the Emirates. Do watch it and have a good laugh. It talks about Dubai and us - the multiethnic people of Dubai. As the days get warmer and Dubai opens its doors to tourists and visitors the world over, let’s not forget to stay safe, stay responsible and keep our hygiene practices top on priority like we did for the last two years. Happy Summers People!

Mercury Rising!

’m getting my first taste of the sweltering Dubai heat and trust me, it’s no exaggeration when they say that you have to feel it to believe it. But also what set the temperatures soaring was the sizzling event we recently had. We certainly raised the bar yet again with the grand finale of Mai Dubai presents Arab Asia Starz Season 2 powered by TikTok and brought to you by Starz Media. The event was a roaring success and the talent, glamour, style all under one roof – not something you see every day for sure! Dubai’s also gearing up for the upcoming Eid Al Adha. A time to feast and tuck in the most scrumptious and delicious dishes that the city serves up especially during this time. Late evening barbecues, family get-togethers, lavish dinners… The Eid celebrations apart, residents are also looking forward to a six-day holiday. Staycations are already on the cards of many. To be honest, a spa-cation is what my dreams are made of, but I quite dig this concept of a staycation too. For working professionals, especially the ones who can’t take much time off their hectic schedules, the quick, fun getaways are a great way to unwind and rejuvenate both mind and body! And the best thing about a staycation? You don’t need another break to recuperate from your vacay, right! Well, for the ones who may not be able to head to these haven-promising luxurious properties, there’s nothing to worry as there’s no compromise on entertainment at all. Most of these OTT giants chalk out enough interesting programming to make sure of that and have much in store for you. However, for those travel buffs who can’t wait to grab their passports, schmooze their way to the airport, and fly out, looking over the horizon from the window of their flight, awaiting to explore their new destination, there’s good news! A whole lot of countries across are now opening their travel corridors for vaccinated Dubai residents sans the quarantine. (Have shared some of my recommendations in the pages ahead!) Yes folks, it’s time to beat the heat. Take that much-awaited summer vacay and get ready to sass up in your airport attires once again! So tell us what are your plans this July?

Eid Al Adha Mubarak..

ADVERTORIAL

“Just Like That”( JLT) is back – ONE LAST TIME LIVE One of the most successful plays in the UAE, “Just Like That” by Tall Tales Production, is back after two sold out runs ONE LAST TIME LIVE! Imagine how would it be to see life in Dubai played out onstage? The very people you meet, with the same problems, set in the same context with similar amazing stories, all peppered with a dash of comedy? Dubai based Tall Tales Productions presents to you an original comedy “Just Like That” (JLT) which is based in JLT in Dubai. First staged in April 2018, and then in April 2019, to sold out shows, the play is back with two shows on July 8th and July 10th 2021 at The Theatre, Mall of the Emirates. This much loved, multi-award-winning show is a microcosm of Dubai – there is an Emirati writer, a British businessman, a European entrepreneur, a Lebanese airhostess, a Filipino housewife, a South-Indian security guard, and an Indian %*3&$5&% #: 13*:"/," +0)3* or Pakistani Investment Banker (you will be guessing the entire play which country he comes from). Director Priyanka Johri says, “Very rarely as a 5) director you come across a script that you can repeat on stage thrice with 1. 5)do +6-: ] it still being just as enjoyable to you, your cast and your audiences! With an original script like this one, the foundation remains the same, but the jokes and references get updated the script- fresh and relatable to its time (post The Theatre Mall ofkeeping the Emirates Dubai pandemic).”

We are paying tribute to “Hamilton” and “Rowan Atkinson” in the production,” he says.Manju Ramanan,co-writer of play mentions, “What started out as a vigorous brain storming session on various experiences over gallons of coffee has materialized into this pun and fun filled play that laughs with you and not at you.” Christina Papachristou, a talented Greek actress living in Dubai, is happy to play the character of ANNA for a third time. “I’m thrilled to be part of a delightfully funny and relatable Dubai story on stage. Eric Drury, who plays the British businessman Steve says “When we started this journey,we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. I wanted to work with two of my colleagues, Asad Khan (Actor) and Priyanka (director) so I said yes to the production. SAVIOUR OF THE MASSES

Sonu Sood was the messiah for thousands of migrant workers making their way to their homes in far-off places last year. He arranged transport and food for them and earned their gratitude. This year too, he’s helping people get oxygen and medicines. Thousands reach out to him on his social media. Now it seems he’s meeting people at his residence as well.

AAMIR KHAN’S UNIQUE BUSINESS MODEL Everyone knows that Aamir Khan is known as Mr Perfectionist. But what many don’t know is that Khan has a business model, when it comes to his remuneration. And it seems to have worked wonders for him. Elaborating on the business model, the actor says, “I’ve stopped taking money upfront. I don’t charge a single rupee for my films. If a film does well, first the investment is recovered. When everyone is paid and the cost is recovered, I earn a percentage in profits. So if a film doesn’t work, I won’t make money. But no one should suffer a loss, I feel responsible for that.” He further adds, “The model that I work on is, let’s say a film costs INR 100 crore to make. So all the cost involved -- cast, crew, production -- I don’t take any money. When the film releases, at that point I get zero money. As it starts to earn money, it goes towards the P&A (prints and advertising), which is over and above the 100 crore. Then, the investment is paid back. Now, the producer has recovered his cost. And then, I go into percentage of profits. There is no way the producer loses any money. So if the film sustains a loss, I don’t get paid. The first rupee I earn is when the costs have been recovered,” he added. It’s a healthy practice and we wish more stars would adopt the model.

DISCO DANCER TO BE ADAPTED AS A PLAY

DISCO DANCER (1982), FEATURING MITHUN CHAKRABORTY, OM PURI AND RAJESH KHANNA IS ALL SET TO BE MADE INTO A PLAY. POPULAR MUSIC DIRECTOR DUO, SALIM-SULAIMAN, ARE SET TO PRODUCE THE MUSICAL. “I HAVE GIVEN THE SCREENPLAY RIGHTS OF THE FILM TO SALIM-SULAIMAN AND THEY ARE COLLABORATING WITH SA RE GA MA ON IT,” DIRECTOR BABBAR SUBHASH REVEALED. SALIM MERCHANT SAID THEY WOULD RESTART WORK AFTER THE LOCKDOWN. SUBHASH IS TIGHT-LIPPED ABOUT WHO’D BE REPRISING THE LEAD ROLE IN THE PLAY. “FILMS AND PLAYS ARE TWO DIFFERENT MEDIUMS AND I REALLY DON’T KNOW WHO WILL BE ABLE TO PLAY THAT CHARACTER,” HE SAYS. expert advice Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan set destroyed by Tauktae Cyclone Tauktae has led to the deaths of many people and has also wreaked havoc in its wake, cleaving through many properties. According to media reports, it appears that the cyclone has not spared Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan set either, which was located on the outskirts of Mumbai. While there were no casualties reported, the set on which a large part of the film was supposed to be shot, stands destroyed. “There were about 40 people on the set when the cyclone hit the Maidaan set - the guards and the curators of the football ground which largely comprises the set tried their best to save as much as they could but their efforts proved almost totally futile,” said a source. This is the second time the makers of Maidaan have suffered a setback because of the set. In 2020, a 16-acre, high-maintenance set built for the film was dismantled due to the COVID-19 lockdown and the rains. “The Maidaan makers Boney Kapoor (producer) and Amit Sharma (director) had hoped that the ongoing lockdown would be eased beyond May 31, 2021, and they would wind up the matches in the next 15-17 days. But all those plans, for now, stand washed out,” the source added. Boney Kapoor reportedly will have to shell out an extra seven crores to remake the set, once the lockdown gets lifted and shooting permissions are given.

Ranveer Singh shoots with Russian artistes for Cirkus

DR. SANA SAJAN Director of American Aesthetic Medical Center

THE MOST POPULAR GLOW TREATMENTPROFHILO PROFHILO IS AN INJECTABLE SKIN RE-MODELLING TREATMENT CONTAINING ONE OF THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATIONS OF HYALURONIC ACID (HA, ESPECIALLY FORMULATED FOR PEOPLE WHOSE SKIN LACKS VOLUME AND ELASTICITY. RATHER THAN JUST PLUMPING AND FILLING WRINKLES, THE SLOW RELEASE OF HA, IT STIMULATES PRODUCTION OF COLLAGEN AND ELASTIN AND IMPROVES SKIN TONE, HYDRATION AND THE APPEARANCE OF FINE LINES. THE RESULT IS IMPROVED SKIN QUALITY LASTING FOR UP TO 6 MONTHS.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

It draws and holds water from your body, and acts as a hydrator rather than a filler. This makes it fantastic for those with tired, dull-looking skin, transforming it into firm and luminous skin. This effect takes place within 3-5 days of treatment. Over the next few weeks collagen and elastin production is stimulated, producing a secondary effect of skin tightening. This is useful because levels of collagen, elastin and Hyaluronic Acid in the skin rapidly drop from the age of 30, resulting in signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles and lacklustre skin. Profhilo acts to reverse some of these changes.

WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT INVOLVE?

Profhilo is injected just below the skin’s surface over 2 sessions 4 weeks apart. It is absorbed within a 2cm radius of its injection site, so to treat the face only 10 injection points are needed in total.

Ranveer Singh and Rohit Shetty team up again, after the success of Simmba, for Cirkus. The film is based on Shakespeare’s Comedy Of Errors where Ranveer Singh and Varun Sharma both play a double role. The film started shooting in November last year and now is nearing completion. We hear that Ranveer Singh has been shooting for the film with some female Russian artistes. With Rohit Shetty helming the film, it is obvious that the movie will be colourful. The makers have been careful about the lead actors’ looks and none of the pictures have leaked from the set. Cirkus’ leading ladies are Jacqueline Fernandez and Pooja Hegde. The film is apparently set in the ’80s. Well, Rohit Shetty films have always been fun-filled comic capers and we can’t wait for this one too.

WHAT ABOUT RECOVERY?

The downtime following a treatment is minimal, and you should be able to return to normal ‘light’ daily activities immediately after your procedure. Avoid physical strain and sports on the first day and don’t have a sauna or steamy bath for the first few days and intense sunlight.

Ask for your consultation now!

Our cover girl Alaya F epitomizes all things lively and radiant. Filled to the brim with infectious enthusiasm, a warm bright smile that reaches her eyes and a positive energy that hugs you with her words full of love, warmth, knowledge, insight and deep wisdom. As she chatters away pleasantly, you want to listen to her while she phrases her sentences with effervescence, seasoned with joie di vivre just like her mom Pooja Bedi. The young actor won the Filmfare award for Best Debut (Female) this year for her film Jawaani Jaaneman where she plays a daughter looking for her father and held her ground among seasoned actors such as Saif Ali Khan and Tabu. The stunner talks about her nana Kabir Bedi’s book “Stories I Must Tell: The

Emotional Life of an actor, Kabir Bedi,” that released recently and compares it to her nani Protima Bedi’s book ‘Time

Pass’ published a few years ago. Manju Ramanan catches up with the girl, who likes to talk. Go, on girl, we are all ears!

WHAT A SMASHING DEBUT IN JAWAANI JAANEMAN. WERE YOU NERVOUS WHILE SHOOTING? Thank you very much! I spent a long time, training just to make sure that I had a basic grasp of what I was getting into. The testing process was intense too. I had auditioned for many projects but they never came through. But when Jawaani Jaaneman came my way, something felt different. I felt highly attached to the project and felt closer to it. I never felt like that with the other projects. I had always felt distant. When I auditioned for it, I felt that this was going somewhere. And when I got it, I was over the moon. I had done all that was needed for the role. I learnt dancing because I had two left feet, I sang for voice modulations, I did kick-boxing because I was overweight – all to prep for my shoot. I enjoyed the process and I still continue to do all of it. DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE AN ACTOR? No, I didn’t. My friends who want to be actors were always at parties, dancing to Bollywood songs, watch movies, and were Bollywood buffs. Not me. Because my family was from the industry and I saw the ups and downs, I ran away from it and wanted to pursue something more stable. I was already studying something else in New York and moved to an acting course and then came to Mumbai where my real training actually began. I gave myself a two-and-a-half-year crash course and learnt everything I could and did it over and over again to an extent that it became my habit. Today I feel that craziness and madness has helped me. YOU ARE TO THE MANNER BORN. YOUR GRAND-PARENTS ARE KABIR BEDI AND PROTIMA BEDI AND POOJA BEDI IS YOUR MOM. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM EACH OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS? All of them are incredibly wonderful people and so distinctly different than each other, though similar in many ways. My nani, Protima Bedi, I think was totally fearless, was out there, did what she did in the most positive way. The biggest learning from her, is the discipline she had. She decided to be a classical dancer very late in life and learning something like a classical dance form that is usually done when you are very young. She not only learnt Odissi, she excelled in it and did it with her heart and soul. She moved to a new place, started Nrityagram (a dance school) with the seed of discipline sown deeply in her. I would like to imbibe that from her. My nana, Kabir Bedi is an epitome of elegance, poise and knowledge. There is a wonderful aura around him and he has a beautiful heart. I found so many things in his book that I didn’t know of. He is a private man and his perspective was so lovely. From my mum I have learnt how to treat everyone with a lot of love, kindness and respect. I think that is something I have always noticed and loved about her. BOTH YOUR GRAND-PARENTS WROTE BOOKS ABOUT THEIR LIVES THAT WERE PRETTY UNUSUAL. HOW DID YOU REACT TO THE WRITING?

COVER STORY

Time Pass that my grand-mother wrote was much ahead of its times. It was bold, brazen, brave and so today! My nani is so much like people we see today. So, in her era she was futuristic. I was pretty young when I tried my hand at reading the book and I read half of it. It was too much for me to take. I knew everyone in that book. Then, an older me, picked up that book and read it. It was honest, vibrant and gutsy. That is how she lived her whole life. Now I am planning to read it again since I have read my nana’s book and see where the two stories are interwoven. Both my grand-parents have been truthful to themselves and the world around them. As for my nana’s book, there are so many stories within stories – his family’s history, history of the country and his own personal history of being an actor who made a name overseas. It was fascinating to read how times were then and how people back managed their challenges and triumphs. My nana’s book is like him, very rich in content – he is well read, well-educated and even a normal conversation with him will be full of wonderful thoughts, quotes and experiences. And there is a string of emotion with which he wrote the book.

My nani, Protima Bedi, I think was totally fearless, was out there, did what she did in the most positive way. The biggest learning from her is the discipline she had. She decided to be a classical dancer very late in life.

ANY FAVOURITE CHAPTERS IN THE BOOK? I loved the chapter where my grand-parents meet, then I love the one on Sandokan and Parveen Babi as well as Ramblings on the Beach – a story my nana had written when he was 29 years old. The most heart-breaking one was the chapter on Siddharth Mama, my uncle who passed away. There was so much love my nana poured into his words and when he describes his parents too. YOUR MOTHER’S FILMS YOU HAVE WATCHED AND ENJOYED? I have watched Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander and loved it but recently, on her birthday we were all together and we watched Vishkanya. Like all kids making fun of their parents, we had a good laugh and made fun of her asking her “What were you doing. We laughed and laughed.”

TELL US ABOUT INTERACTING WITH SAIF ALI KHAN AND TABU? I lucked out in my debut film because I was around these wonderful people who didn’t treat me like a junior who didn’t know anything. Everyone treated me like an equal who had as much to give and my opinion was heard just as much. There was an initial fear I had that I had to work hard and give my best but that was in the first few days only. Tabu mam’s character in the film is so similar to my mother in real life. When I was reading the script at home (while Tabu maam was still not cast) I told my mom, this is like you, this woman is you! How uncanny is that. Literally two days ago, my mother and I had an argument and in the middle of a heated conversation, she said, “I think the Feng shui between me and you is all wrong”. I burst out laughing. How was I going to take her seriously after that! (Laughs) I had most of my shoot days with Saif sir (Saif Ali Khan). He is easy, fun, motivating and has no hang-ups at all. A wonderful actor and a great human being. He is fun to work with. I lucked out in my first film. There was not a single day when I felt bad or sad.

My nana’s book is like him, very rich in content - he is well read, welleducated and even a normal conversation with him is full of wonderful thoughts, quotes and experiences

WHAT IS YOUR KIND OF CINEMA? Commercial cinema that we watch today is exactly the type of cinema I love. I love Ayushmann Khurrana’s movies and Badhai Ho is my favourite film. It is all heart and so funny, watchable and real. I like unpretentious cinema and that is also the type of cinema I want to do. But that doesn’t mean I will only stick to that kind of cinema. I want to do films everyone enjoys watching and challenge myself. In the job that I am blessed to have, why should I be tied to one kind of film? YOU HAVE BEEN A REGULAR VISITOR TO DUBAI. WHAT ARE YOUR MEMORIES? I absolutely love Dubai and have come here since I was little. My dad loves Dubai and every time I speak to him, he tells me that he wants to move to Dubai. When I was younger, once a year we would come to Dubai and my dad would already be here. We would visit the Atlantis, go skiing at the Mall of the Emirates Ski Dubai, get wet in the fountains of Marina and do fun stuff. These days I get to see another kind of Dubai and there is still so much left to see. I love the city.

ANY NEW SKILLS YOU PICKED UP DURING THE LOCKDOWN? The lockdown taught me so many things like it did to a lot of people. Like proper solid life skills, learning to stay positive, build relationships and nurture them. I learnt fun skills such as cooking, started doing yoga and painting. I also picked up reading as a hobby. Learning yoga started out because I would scroll through these yoga videos and every day would make it a mission to excel in one pose. I would tell my followers on Instagram that I don’t know yoga, I am only having fun because it looks cool. But then I realised that I had a natural leaning towards it and now I do it properly. DID YOU BINGE WATCH ANY WEB SERIES ON OTT? Yes, I watched Money Heist during the lockdown and every night I would complete all my work and watch it back to back. It is tough to choose a favourite character in it because all characters are grey and sometimes they get annoying and sometimes they are really sweet. But I was obsessed with it. I am a total reality TV fan and love watching competition shows too. CAN YOU RELIVE YOUR FILMFARE AWARD MOMENT ONSTAGE FOR US? That moment is very hard to top. One of those incredibly special moments in my life where I was walking to my nana and he had so much pride in his eyes. I walked to him, gave him a hug and basked in the joy and pride in his eyes and in my joy too. The award was worth all the work I had done. It made me proud of making my people proud. I trained really hard. Not like going to one or two dance classes. I trained sincerely and crazily. I am from an Englishspeaking household, I learnt to speak Hindi. I was 15 kgs heavier, I lost weight. The award was a culmination of all the work put together. I have to work harder to top this moment. WHAT ABOUT YOUR MUSIC VIDEO WITH TAAHA SHAH FROM DUBAI? Oh, I didn’t know he was from Dubai. Dharma 2.0 was producing the song and Manish Malhotra did the outfits. Punit Malhotra called me to ask me if I would do to. I gladly agreed because it sounded like fun and it had been a while since I was

Two days ago, my mother and I had an argument and in the middle of a heated conversation, she said, “I think the Feng shui between me and you is all wrong. She is so much like Tabu mam’s character in Jawaani

Janeman.

on set. It was fun shoot and it looks so beautiful HOW DO YOU PROTECT YOUR INNER SPACE OR IN YOUR MOM’S WORDS, YOUR FENG SHUI? By having a lot of conversation with myself, I tune to myself. It sounds very funny in theory and this skill I developed while doing my training. I would be tired every day and spent a lot of time with myself. I am a very social person otherwise but due to the training daily, I was to myself most of the time. When you confront yourself, you cannot lie and you can be negative – like saying I am fat, or I am useless. I learnt to get past that and treat myself like I would treat someone I really love. Would I be discouraging of that person? Would I be unkind to the person I loved? Would I use harsh words? No. I started talking to myself with the same love and respect that I would give the other person. I learnt selflove and it gave me a great sense of calm, inner peace and confidence. So, when I am frustrated, I solve my own problems. Self-love is so important. WHAT ARE YOUR NEXT FILMS? I do have a bunch of projects but the announcements haven’t been made yet and so I cannot speak. Each is a little different than the other and super challenging and fun in its own way.

GOLD & GREEN MAGIC PRIYANKA CHOPRA AND NICK JONAS WHERE: BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS 2021 THE X FACTOR: POWER OF TWO

Priyanka Chopra is one to make bold choices for the red carpet and she did not disappoint in her custom-made Dolce and Gabbana gold number. The ‘naked’ dress featured a plunging neckline, a thigh-high slit and a thick metallic belt that screamed Cher as the diva stepped onto the red carpet. Complementing her in a forest green ensemble by Fendi was Nick Jonas. His silk shirt was the perfect contrast to the texture of the ensemble. And that bling around his waist topped off the look to perfection. Priyanka and Nick both aced their looks individually and were a visual delight together on the starry night.

Bag To Defer A fancy bag never hurt nobody Bags aren’t just about carrying your things around. Used wisely, they can make a simple outfit look like a million bucks. You can throw on a simple dress or a t-shirt with jeans and top it with a quirky handbag to elevate it a thousand fold. From unusual sizes, as small as a bag around the wrist to duffle bags that have pop-art references on it, we’ve seen B-town fashionistas carry ’em all. So what may seem like a low on functionality investment is high on style quotient.

Dubai on a

plate Dubai may be known for its glitter and glam, but what it’s equally well-known for is its global food culture! A melting pot of ethnicities and cultures, the city is home to cuisines from all across the globe. But what truly makes its culinary scene one of the most happening in the world is that there’s something for all tastes and all pockets too! Whether dining surrounded by clouds in one of the most lavish restaurants in the Burj Khalifa or tucking in the delicacies in the quaint bylanes of BurJuman, experimenting at food trucks or just enjoying family time at local restaurants, the choice of cuisines is huge. Variety is certainly the spice of life here. And Aakanksha Naval-Shetye checks out some of the most-popular global cuisines that have made this city their home!

Dial D for Desi

Be it the lip-smacking Indian street food like pani-puri and pav-bhaji that’ll transport you to beaches of Mumbai or the heavenly biryanis that’ll remind you of rich Hyderabad and Lucknow flavours, mouth-watering South cuisine, and yummiest North Indian fare chole kulchey to Butter chicken and the unlimited variety of snacks from dhoklas to samosas, the aromatic Indian dishes have a huge fan-base here. The cuisine is a part of the street food scene as well as the most luxurious high-end hotels and they are a hit not just with the desis, but the firangs too who are regular patrons of the cuisine!

Indulge in authentic Arabic flavours You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to local delicacies whether sweet or savory. Especially since there’s more to Arabic food than Hummus, Labneh, Shish Tawook, Shawarma and Pita bread. Coming together under this umbrella is a host of traditional dishes from across the Middle East. Dig into the Egyptian Mulukhiya and Kushari or relish the Lebanese Kibbeh, Manakish, Tabbouleh and Fattoush. Try on Pakistan’s Haleem, Kormas, Nihari, the Iranian Khoresh-e Ghormeh Sabzi, Saudi’s national dish Kabsa or indulge your sweet tooth with the Turkish baklava and Kunafa! Then there’s also Mandi, Khuzi, Samboosa, Iranian Sangak, Al Harees, Chelo Kebabs, and the famed Camel platter!

Calling Continental cuisine-lovers! With the huge population of expats, it’s hardly a surprise to see that continental cuisine is all the rage here. The cuisine finds its way on the best of menus! From pies to patties, and steaks to sizzlers and salads, several restaurants here specialize in the freshest of Mediterranean and European offerings on a platter with a delightful mix of meats and veggies. The brunches are quite a hit part of the food culture here and in that the Continental cuisines are usually the hero dishes!

Fast and Foodalicious The fast-food scene of Dubai is perhaps one of the mosthappening around the world. The variety of instantgratification foods that the city serves up across is enough to make it a food haven for fast food lovers. The burgers and wraps are a huge hit and so are the pizzas that are a part of the fast food culture here. The world’s biggest chains have their outlets here and are constantly growing still. You name it and chances are that you’ll find them here. The malls to the market-places are all bustling with these food joints and the crowds at their counters are a witness to their popularity. GO

!

With travel restrictions easing off and countries opening borders without quarantine requirements to vaccinated tourists, especially from Dubai, Aakanksha Naval-Shetye takes a look at some of the destinations you should be packing your bags and heading to this summer and end an almost year-long hiatus from vacationing abroad

Seychelles

Covid protocols:

Quarantine is not required while travelling to or from Seychelles for vaccinated tourists. Proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to travel is to be provided on arrival. A mandatory health declaration form is to be filled on arrival.

Airports:

To meet the rush of the UAE tourists heading to the island for their Eid Al Adha travel plans, Air Seychelles will be adding more flights from Dubai to Seychelles International Airport on the picturesque island of Mahé, which is also home to the small capital, Victoria.

Places to visit:

Whether it’s relaxing by the beaches soaking in the sun and the sand, or indulging the adventurer streak in you rock climbing and diving in the pristine waters, Seychelles has something for all. A haven for aquatic pursuits, surf, sail or snorkel, this tropical island is the home to thriving coral reefs, virgin beaches, jungles and an array of flora and fauna. Populated with marine sanctuaries, the islands boast of some of the richest fishing grounds in the world as well as home to the Morne Seychellois National Park.

We recommend:

The three main tourist islands are Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue. Anse Intendance and Baie Lazare on Mahé are just not to be missed. While Anse Intendance makes for a great surfing spot and turtles are huge attraction here, Baie Lazare is a stunning little village boasting of the neo-Gothic Baie Lazare Church, which is one of the area’s main tourist attractions. Mahé is also home to Morne Seychellois National Park. Anse Lazio (Chevalier Bay) on the North of Praslin is a beach just not to be missed. A hike over a hill will take you to this stunning spot with its azure waters and culinary options. Praslin also boasts of the UNESCO-listed Vallée de Mai, while La Digue – the fourth largest island in the archipelago - is home to the most scenic beaches and reflects the traditional island life. The Veuve Nature Reserve is situated here as is the La Pass to Grand Anse Trail. Also don’t forget to binge on the Créole cuisine. 22 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2021

Covid protocols:

Vaccinated tourists are required to submit proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to travel.

Florida

Airports:

Emirates flies to Orlando - the destination to head to if you’re looking for a fun vacay with family in Florida.

Places to visit:

This central Florida city is home to the most-popular and loved iconic theme parks especially Walt Disney World and is the family-friendly go-to destination around the year. Movie fans can indulge at the Universal Studios Florida. Then there’s Sea World Orlando for the dolphin and seal shows, Disney’s Animal Kingdom for the wildlife enthusiasts. Not just the theme parks, Orlando also has the Kennedy Space Center as well as the Dali Museum and Orlando Art Museum!

We recommend:

Besides the theme parks, the outdoors are a great draw in Florida. Kayak around the Shingle Creek, explore the Ocala National Forest, or enjoy golfing at the city’s well-known golf courses. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, head to Miami for a dose of the happening beach life and the water sports.

Italy

Covid protocols:

Besides providing proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to travel, vaccinated tourists are required to submit a Digital Passenger Locator Form before the travel. A QR code then issued is to be presented at check-in. On arrival in Italy, they are required to take a Rapid Antigen Swab Test.

Airports:

Emirates is offering the Covid-19 tested flights that allows tourists to travel without quarantine to Venice, Rome and Milan and are looking at increasing the frequency. Meanwhile, the low-cost airline FlyDubai is scheduled to start direct flights to Naples.

Places to visit:

From pristine beaches to high glam fashion, from ancient monuments to museums to the mighty colosseum to the leaning Tower of Pisa, the canals to Lake Como… Italy is one of the most popular tourist destinations. And with the Covid cases on a dip, the country is welcoming the tourists once again. Rome, Tuscany, Capri, Venice, Florence, Naples, Milan, you’re spoilt for choice here!

We recommend:

You can wrap up most cities and towns in Italy in one to two days each and not feel rushed. So depending on whether you’re a museum connoisseur or fashionista or a student of art, or history or looking at just a relaxing vacay or a romantic getaway, plan your cities accordingly. The capital city Rome is home to the most iconic landmarks - Vatican, the Sistine Chapel and the Colosseum. Next is Venice with its world-famous canals, gondolas and the architecture. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is another one on the bucket-list of any avid tourist. A quick stop when traveling from Florence to the Cinque Terre, it can be done in a day. If fashion is your call then you can also plan Milan between your travels to Venice and Florence.

Covid protocols:

Quarantine is not required while travelling to or from Armenia for vaccinated tourists from the UAE. Proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to travel is to be provided on arrival

Armenia

Airports:

From Dubai, the most opted flights are to the capital city of Yerevan (Yerevan Airport).

Places to visit:

Armenia promises the best of Europe and Asia – be it geographically or culturally and a mix of the ancient charms and modern architecture. The beautiful landscapes, mountains, caves, extinct volcanoes, street markets, scenic rivers and lakes make this little hidden jewel worth a visit. Yerevan is the home to several ancient monuments, holy sites, museums, delightful cafes, and bustling market places.

We recommend:

You just can’t miss the Hraparak Square, known for its singing fountains and mosaic rock carpet. Kickstart your vacay right here and move on to explore other Armenian treats like Amberd Fortress which is an hour’s drive from Yerevan. This 7th century fortress offers the most stunning views. Also check out the ruins of Zvartnots Temple. Lake Sevan is the perfect picnic and leisure spot dotted with beaches and monasteries. Take your pick and spend a relaxed day by the lake, sunbathing or exploring. If adventure is your thing then you can go exploring the ancient caves at the Noravank Gorge and get a slice of history. Also add on your itinerary the second largest Armenian city of Gyumri, which is the home to some of the most significant museums. *PLEASE NOTE: THE TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS MAY CHANGE AT A SHORT NOTICE SUBJECT TO THE CURRENT COVID-19 SITUATIONS

INTERVIEW

Living it Up

X A M ! E L Y T S He is the story of survival, spunk and style. He has won the coveted title of Mr Dubai 2019 and over everything else, is a male breast cancer survivor. Meet the handsome and affable Max Fardan or Maruf Asimov who is a top model and brand ambassador who was one of the judges of Arab Asia Starz Season 2. Manju Ramanan chats up

with him! TELL US THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME MAX FARDAN? Actually, there is a long story to this name. It all started when I came in Dubai to begin my career and it was a bit difficult for some of my friends from my company to pronounce my name. So, they used to call me Max or Max Fardan. After I was detected with and survived breast cancer, a few editors wanted to write my story of surviving the condition. I didn’t want my family back home to know that I had breast cancer. So, I thought, I better use this name so that my family will not come to know. Luckily now I am fully cured and my family also knows what I went through. So, that’s

why people know me as Max Fardan. YOU FOUGHT AND DEALT WITH CANCER, WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF DURING THAT PERIOD? The one thing I have learned from this experience is to enjoy every moment of your life, even though you have little time to live. HOW EXCITED ARE YOU TO BE ONE OF THE JUDGES FOR ARAB ASIA STARZ? I am very excited to join Arab Asia Starz as a judge and I really had a great time and memorable experience. WHAT IS STYLE ACCORDING TO YOU? The most important for me is how

comfortable are the clothes you wear and in most of my styles I add a bit of my culture and my taste on it. WHAT ARE THE THREE THINGS OF DUBAI THAT YOU LOVE VERY MUCH? Dubai is my second home country. I love it and I am thankful to Dubai for what it gave me. I love everything about Dubai. WHAT ARE THE TIPS YOU WOULD GIVE TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BE MR DUBAI LIKE YOU? I would say “just be yourself, represent your true self and your country.” The truth will always rise to the top.

Young talent is

Fearless Says the bright-eyed and bubbly Pallavi Tiwari, RJ, emcee and social media influencer, who hosted Arab Asia Starz Season 2, the region’s biggest digital talent hunt.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW THAT THIS IS THE SPACE YOU WANTED TO BE IN? I always knew that I was never going to pursue a 9 to 5 job. I was always creative as a child. So, everything happened very organically, started with theatre and my love for stage, radio and television happened simultaneously. WHAT HAS YOUR PROFESSION TAUGHT YOU AND HOW DID IT CHANGE YOU? My profession has taught me the power and value of each day. In radio each day is a new day. The fabric of a show each day is different, the trivia, contests, information, music changes every day. The art of doing radio has taught me that each day is a brandnew day and you have the power to design your life each day the way you want to. What was relevant yesterday might not be of any use today. On a philosophical level, we have the power to create and recreate miracles every single day just like we do on radio.

WHAT ARE YOUR BEST MOMENTS ON AIR? ANY FOND MEMORIES? A few ago something very special happened with one of my listeners. She was a fan and going through a rough patch in her life. She said my voice gave her hope and positivity in her life. She would call almost every day on air and talk and there came a point where she shared her relationship problem on air and I tried to speak to her positively. A few months down the line, she came to see me in the studio with her husband. It was such an awesome feeling when the husband said Pallavi your voice and talk changed my wife’s life. We were going through a rough patch and your voice was the best friend she needed in Dubai. I can never forget how that made me feel HOW DID YOU MANAGE FAUZ PAS ONSTAGE WHILE HOSTING? Ha ha ! It happens all the time, but, guess one can breeze through with a

smile and correct it . I ‘ve been blessed with a good audience always (they’ve always been forgiving) so lucky me HOW DO YOU SEE YOUNG TALENT OF TODAY EMERGING? The younger generation is super talented and fearless, they don’t shy away from expressing themselves. I am amazed as how cool and almost effortlessly they come up with creative stuff. It’s wonderful to see them take over and I also get to learn a lot just by looking at them. A FAVOURITE SET OF SONGS THAT KEEP YOUR MOOD POSITIVE ALWAYS? Ohh! I am a radio baby I can never choose a few songs only. I live them all. It totally depends on my mood. Peppy foot tapping numbers when I am in a good mood and mellow romantic numbers when the mood is slightly different. July 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 33

INTERVIEW

Tuning

in to their Roots

MUSIC COMPOSERS SACHIN-JIGAR MEET ME AT THE DUBAI HILL’S GOLF CLUB WHERE THEY ARE COMPOSING MUSIC FOR MADDOCK FILM’S PROJECTS THEY ARE CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH. THEY MET TWO DECADES AGO IN MUMBAI, WHILE WORKING WITH THEIR GURU AND MENTOR RAKESH ROSHAN AS MUSIC ARRANGERS AND EVENTUALLY TURNED TO SUCCESSFUL MUSIC COMPOSERS. A TETE-A TETE WITH THE BOYS WHO HAIL FROM MY HOME-STATE GUJARAT, CONFESS THAT THEY ARE NOT OVERTLY AMBITIOUS AND LET LIFE TAKE ITS NATURAL COURSE. WELL, THEY HAVE STRUCK GOLD WITH THAT ATTITUDE WITH THEIR RECENT SONGS SUCH AS PANGHAT AND NADIYA PAAR REACH 200 MILLION VIEWS! EXCERPTS FROM THE INTERVIEW. MANJU RAMANAN

What brings you to Dubai? Sachin: We have been working here for a while now but surfaced a bit late. Jigar was already here and I joined him a little later. I was suffering from Covid back home. I came after I was cured. We have a sound engineer from here we work with and so we keep coming to Dubai pretty often. We are working on Hum Do Humaare Do starring Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Sannon and another Maddock film called Shiddat. We understand B Praak and Guru Randhawa are also in Dubai currently and Amaal Mallik just left. Dubai feels like home because we know many musicians, artists and technicians here. Are you moving here too, like some Bollywood stars and musicians? Jigar: We are very happy where we are back home. Our families are back home and most importantly our kids are in a good school there. We do go away to Ahmedabad or Goa sometimes to take a break and compose music. Dubai is a destination like that for us. How did you meet? We met at Rajesh Roshan jee’s studio. Sachin: I used to play tabla and wasn’t a great tabla player and so, Rajesh jee introduced me to the key-board and encouraged me to play the piano. Amit Trivedi was there too and he introduced me to Jigar. Jigar: We hit off very well and we never sat down and signed an agreement that we will be partners. We just wanted to do good music and still have no plans. Honestly, there is a lack of a killer ambition in this combination. We just let destiny take its course.

34 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2021

34-35-FFME-july2021 SachinJigar.indd 34

29/06/2021 1:16 AM

Sachin: I come from a Hindustani music background and Jigar has a western sensibility. We bonded over food over everything else. We also worked with AR Rahman and gained a lot of perspective from him but we never believed we would end up as composers. What did you learn from Rajesh Roshan? We were very raw when we met at Rajesh jee’s home and studio. We hadn’t seen a studio of that size. He was a rebel of his times. All his music was against the tide. He did so many Amitabh Bacchan films and films such as Kunwara Baap, Jhoothi, Karan -Arjun, King Uncle etc and has been a gentle path-breaker. We trained rigorously under him and learnt cabling, making tea and coffee for the singers, getting them warm water, powder for the percussionists because their dholaks would need it. Once, he put me inside the studio when a singer was singing this was to observe finer nuances of when the song starts or ends. Both you have been part of theatre composing music? Yes, in 20 years, we could have easily done around 500-600 plays in English, Hindi and Gujarati. Theatre took us everywhere. The training in theatre strips you bare of several things and you understand your craft deeply. You start appreciating the story. We follow the same route in films too. Our music follows the story of the film. You sing a new song in every interview of yours stating that the songs will be offended if you don’t sing them all? Sachin: Yes, we treat songs like our children and we cannot neglect them. There is no formula to how a song takes birth. But when it is born, it is like a human being – it will demand attention, time and nurturing. Jigar: Whether it becomes a hit or not, is not in our control but we as parents have to do our best. Not all your kids become superstars. Some do though!

an artist’s work. We used to wait for Sonu Nigam’s or SalimSulaiman’s newest song to buy a CD for Rs 160 at one point. Today kids decide if they want to book an annual subscription for the music they like online. This generation has no prejudice and are open in their hearts. They listen to so many melodies and not bound down by a certain tradition because they are educated and aware in varied ways. Jigar: There is just too much mud out there. But as we speak, I am just told by my team that our songs Nadiya Paar and Panghat have crossed 200 million views. You cannot avoid this new benchmark – we have to crack it but we can’t be enslaved to it. When we made Go Goa Gone, it was a whacky album and though it has been 8 years old – Babaji ki Booti is a college memory for many. Many couples find resonance in Saibo. People remember songs they connect with. How influenced are you by Gujarat and its rich tradition of music? Sachin: For many years Gujaratis settled abroad had to be at par with the foreigners they interacted with purely for the basis of survival and prosperity. In the process they started speaking their language resulting in a bit of neglect to their own tradition. What we are trying to say is, it is cool to go onstage and sing a Gujarati song. You don’t have to lose your own identity at all. While you respect and adapt to other cultures, respect your roots too. I fell in love with AR Rahman’s music but all of it was in Tamil. Rahman sir sang Tamil with so much conviction and he broke that barrier. Jigar: Gujarat is like a mother and she is ever-giving to us in terms of her tradition and influence. Folk songs like the ones sung at Garbas during Navratri liberates us from a classic tradition. Classical music is all about discipline, folk music is a rebel. We as Gujaratis are making a conscious attempt to revisit our own music and make it popular. You can see traces in Saibo and Ladki. It is now a passion for us to give Gujarati youngsters pride and a sense of cool about themselves.

Are you active on social media? No, because we cannot be compelled to create content daily. Today artists are the content. None of us are social media heavy but some people post every day and have to shoot a video daily and four music videos every month or four songs have to release. We cannot do that. This is like popcorn and we are not about fast food. We compete with our last song. We never thought we would have a signature tune to Sachin Jigar. Have you every disappointed by a song that didn’t do well? It happens with every album. All songs don’t fly. But we have also seen that some songs - the slower it grows, the longer it lasts. How do you see the trend of independent music? Today you can be in Taiwan creating music, post it online and be a sensation without any mediums or platforms promoting you. You don’t have to be in Mumbai or Bollywood but you should believe in the type of music you make. You still have to express who you are and not worry about numbers on your social media, likes and comments. It will find its way to people’s hearts if you are persistent. The danger is when people pursue the likes and the comments over content. Which means, you are chasing success before hard work. Do you see a difference in young music lovers today as compared to an earlier generation? Sachin: Today, younger people have to impress the world in 15 – 30 seconds of a social media post. If people like you, they will click and watch what you do. Unlike our time when you gave time to soak in

INTERVIEW

e c a r G Of & Strength!

She’s rocked the small screen, made heads turn on the Cannes red carpet, impressed with her big screen outings and is currently creating waves with her music videos. But while on a professional high, it’s been a tough few months for Hina Khan. Having lost her father recently, the actress herself is recovering from Covid-19. However, she’s a portrait of strength and grace as we catch up with one of TV’s most-loved and popular stars for our exclusive interview. In a heart-to-heart chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, Hina talks about her successful innings and her latest hit music videos, but also bares her heart about her journey to recovery

so films and projects have all gotten delayed and have had to be postponed.

Your latest music video ‘Baarish Ban Jaana’ is creating quite a buzz, what was the draw to do it? There were a lot of reasons really. It’s composed and sung by Payal (Dev) and Stebin (Ben) has also lent the vocals. The song has a very 90s feel to it and the melody is very soothing, so I loved the song in itself. Also I was working with Shaheer (Sheikh) for the first time, so that was also exciting. But most of all we shot the song in Kashmir. Shaheer and I have this special connect with Kashmir so that was also one of the reasons.

You’ve been getting a lot of offers on the OTT, are there any genres you’d want to or not want to explore there? I don’t have any restrictions when it comes to OTT. Again, it’s fun and doesn’t consume a lot of time. But for now again that is not possible. There were a couple of things on OTT, as well but you know the shoots are not happening.

Tell us more about your Kashmir connect I’m a half Kashmiri, my mum’s a Kashmiri and I speak Kashmiri very well. As for Shaheer, he is also from Kashmir. So we both have that strong connect. Your screen chemistry with Shaheer created quite a buzz. How was it off screen? Yes, I’m glad that people have really liked the chemistry between us. We hardly worked for two days, but in those two days I think we managed to create that screen chemistry that the song needed. And off screen we really connected instantly and it was a lot of fun. In fact in the flight itself we went on and on about going to Srinagar, and while we were on our way to Pehalgam which was like three hours from Srinagar, we were chatting all the way. We had a lot to talk about since we both belong to Srinagar and there was just this strong connect we had with the place, so yes it was super fun.

The love around you keeps you going. When you have people you want to take care of, I think it automatically gives you a lot of strength.

Music videos are quite a change from the usual shows… To be honest, since we got into the pandemic and in these difficult times, we hardly have a choice. And music videos are a great option because it’s like short term. We shoot for two - three days and we are done. So it’s easier for us to look after ourselves and be more cautious too about our own sanitization and safety. Also it becomes easier to take care of our family by being there with them. It’s also great to be able to entertain people with new songs and ourselves too. What makes you say a yes to any project? See, every actor tries to do different kind of work, whether it’s a music video or a film or a short film, so I’m also character-hungry. I want to play different characters and even if it’s a music video and I get to play something I haven’t done earlier or some other character that’s different from my previous music video then I take it up. Tell us about your upcoming projects? I have a few films lined up, I have signed them, and I was to start the shoot for one of them in London. And the other one was to be shot in Rajasthan, but unfortunately I could not go ahead with that because we were back in lockdown and the second wave was even more fatal than the first one

How are you coping with this phase? I’m currently on a road to recovery and on medication as well, but I’m exercising a bit, not stressing much, spending time with my mom. Covid doesn’t just go, it takes time for your body to heal even after you’ve tested negative and that’s what I’m doing. I am keeping myself and mom busy, taking care, having as many as natural products as possible and staying fit. I don’t want to get into the details, but at the stage where I am right now, I’m okay with taking things a little slow and see where life takes us. So, it’s not like I’m not doing anything, I’m working on a lot of other things, my music videos keep coming but I don’t want to risk it right now. I want to go slow. I want to go easy. Quarantine can be quite an ordeal… Yes, the isolation even at home can really hit you bad, especially if you have anxiety or panic attacks. I can’t imagine what people in the ICU go through. But it’s very important to keep yourself busy. We are in that phase in our life, but I force my mom to watch something on TV, and just try to keep her occupied.

How do you look back at the past year and the way ahead? I’m just not very happy about the fact how we have had to spend the past one-and-a-half year. A lot of time has been wasted. I feel really sad about it, like there’re so many lost opportunities, not just for me, but a lot of people. But the only way forward is to stay strong. What’s been your strength in trying times like these? I was in a lot of pressure when I got Covid, physically and mentally. But you know that you have to fight because there are people who love you, who depend on you and you got to stay strong for them. So, I think the love around you keeps you going. When you have people you want to take care of, I think it automatically gives you a lot of strength. Like I know the phase I am in, but knowing that I have to take care of someone who needs more care than I do, you know you can’t break and you have to keep going. When you know people need you, you want to take care of yourself even more. You should visit Dubai soon! Yes, I so want to come to Dubai. Even my mom loves Dubai. In fact, the first thing I want to do after the travel restrictions are eased is to bring her to Dubai. July 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 37

Says Armaan Mallik who is literally going places. After conquering Bollywood with his songs, with a huge fan following on social media, the young singer has his sights fixed into the western world. Manju Ramanan chats up with the youth icon of music ECHO IS ECHOING ALL OVER THE WORLD. TELL US ABOUT IT? ‘Echo’ is my fourth English single and first-ever international collaboration with K-Pop singersongwriter Eric Nam, and renowned music producer KSHMR. It is about fighting so hard for a relationship and reaching a point where you ask yourself why you’re still holding on to it. It’s so emotionally draining to be in a back-and-forth relationship because one-minute things are great, the next it’s just completely dark, and you’re left all alone, picking up the pieces. The song lyrically describes a place where both individuals in the relationship begin to question each other: “Tell me what we’re fighting for, and is it really worth the battles?” A realization then sets in that being with each other is actually breaking their hearts and that there’s no good coming out of this relationship. ‘Echo’ was incepted when I met KSHMR in Los Angeles right before the onset of the global pandemic and the release of my first English single. He played some unreleased material including ‘Echo’, it just stuck, and I recorded my demo verse at his studio itself. Around mid-2020, Eric and I had this little interaction on Twitter that sparked off an internet friendship and our teams got connected as well to discuss a potential collaboration. The track we all gravitated most towards was ‘Echo’ and we spent the next few months making it sound like it does right now. It feels amazing to create a magnificent song with such talented artists like KSHMR and Eric because we all coming together for a song really had one common goal, which is more Asian representation in global entertainment. YOU HAVE VENTURED INTO THE WESTERN WORLD FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE AND ARE YOU AIMING AT THE GRAMMYS? Entering into the Western world with my English music was a natural move for me because I believe this has always been my career trajectory. At first, I was quite worried about starting from scratch in the world of global pop and not knowing how it would affect the career I’ve built in India all these years. However, with the love that I have received from my fans back home who have supported me from day one, this journey has been a breeze! All the fears and uncertainties diminished to zero after seeing the love that my Armaanians showered on my first English track, ‘Control’ and it has only quadrupled with ‘Echo’! While these aren’t completely alien markets for us, we are trying to make the best out of our limited resources and learning on the go. With each passing day, I am coming closer to realizing all

my dreams, and bringing home a Grammy is definitely one of them. I hope that it only gets better from here! WHAT ABOUT YOUR PROJECTS BACK HOME? WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON? A lot of new regional and Bollywood projects! So much music is incoming in the next few months, I will share the details very soon, so keep an eye out on my socials! TELL US ABOUT YOUR INDEPENDENT MUSIC? Everything you hear on my independent music is unadulterated Armaan Malik. It’s the exact way I envision myself and for you to listen to. While Bollywood has given me the identity and platform to reach out to millions of listeners around the world, I still wanted to make music that represents my true artistry. It has been a lifelong dream for me to sing and write English music as well as be the first musical artist to truly take India on a global stage. This music is inside of me, it’s my DNA. INTERVIEW

that’s something that comes naturally to me. This genre also gives me enough space to deliver my thoughts and create music that’s most palatable as well as relatable to my audiences. Apart from the pop stuff, I genuinely love EDM! For the longest time I was yearning to collaborate with an EDM producer, and then we made ‘Echo’ happen! WHAT IS THE BEST COMPLIMENT YOU HAVE RECEIVED FROM A MUSICIAN YOU HAVE ADMIRED? Well, I remember this one instance when my Sonu Nigam called me up and praised me for my work in ‘Bol Do Na Zara.’ He was driving back home from work and he happened to hear the song on the radio. That’s when he called me up and expressed how he loved my rendition and my expressions in the recording. I was overwhelmed with joy when this happened! Sonu sir is a singer I’ve always looked up to since childhood and to have received praise about my singing from him, genuinely meant a lot to me! ANY PROJECTS IN DUBAI? I cannot wait for the situation to get better, fly down to Dubai again to shoot exquisite music videos and perform for my fans there. Apart from work, I always make it a point to travel to Dubai once a year to relax and take it easy. It’s one of my favorite cities in the world!

WHAT ARE YOUR VENTURES WITH BROTHER AND COMPOSER AMAAL CURRENTLY? Amaal and I have worked on a lot of new music in the last few months. Even though he was in Dubai for a while, we wrapped up around 6-7 songs. We recently released Kya Kiya Hain Tune from Sidharth Shukla’s new web series, Broken But Beautiful 3 and we cannot wait to unveil the WIP projects! HOW MUCH WORK COULD YOU FOCUS ON DURING THE LOCKDOWN? WAS IT EASY OR VEXING? YOUR THOUGHTS. Working in lockdown hasn’t been easy for me. I’ve had to force myself to work on certain days where I didn’t have the energy or the enthusiasm to do anything. More than the physical aspect of things, it was the constant mental battles that were the hardest to overcome. However, I am glad I could gather the strength to create quite a lot of music during this period and put out tracks that brought not only my fans but also me, some semblance of normalcy, peace, and enjoyment. THE MUSIC THAT IS EXPLODING AROUND THE WORLD – DO YOU SEE THE AUDIENCES GET MORE DISCERNING? Definitely! Social media now is an indispensable part of entertainment in our lives and with the availability of almost any content in a matter of seconds, the audiences have become more aware as well as critical. IS THERE A GENRE THAT YOU LEAN TOWARDS MORE THAN THE OTHER? WHICH ONE AND WHY? Pop/R&B is my all-time favorite genre of music to listen to as well as release as a musician because 40 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2021

Playing a Black Cat Commando was like an award for me, Says Arjan Bajwa, who played Shahid Kapoor’s older brother in Kabir Singh and stole the show in ‘The State Of Siege 26/11’on Zee 5 that was based on the Mumbai terror attacks. Bajwa is currently working on his web-series with Mithun Chakraborty and Shruti Haasan and waiting to produce a documentary on the Air India Kanishka air crash that shook the nation a few decades ago. Manju Ramanan chats up with the Fashion and Rustom actor. YOU HAVE RECEIVED APPRECIATION FOR YOUR PERFORMANCE IN STATE OF SIEGE 26/11. HOW TOUGH WAS IT TO RELIVE A TRAUMATIC NATIONAL TRAGEDY? Shooting for The State Of Siege 26/11 was an amazing experience since I relived the time it happened when I was in Mumbai. Col. Sunil Sharon, the role I played in the series, was out of the ordinary and playing his character, was difficult, He was stoic and headed the whole operation of Black Tornado with great precision. His second-hand command in real-life, Lieutenant Commander Col. Sandeep Sen, who was the consultant, guided us. He supervised everything right from our uniforms to the way we walked, talked and the mindset we had. He trained us with weapons, paid immense attention to minute details and shared the experiences that Col. Sunil Sharon went through in real life. It was the biggest award for me to play a character of an Indian army real life hero, the commanding officer of Black Cat Commandos (the elite force in India) and to be appreciated by him. NAME 5 OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ROLES AND WHY? My first would be Mani Ratnam sir’s film Guru where I played Arzaan Contractor. The second would be Fashion where I shared the screened opposite the global icon, Priyanka Chopra. The third would be the film Rustom, with Akshay sir and Ileana Cruz. Then, my OTT series The State

of Siege 26/11 where I played Col. Sunil Sharon, the commanding officer of the NSG during the 2008 Mumbai Attacks. In the Telugu industry, my first ever film called Sampangi was a stepping stone into my cinema career. It is my 5th favourite role! YOUR FAVOURITE CO-STARS AND YOUR MEMORIES WITH THEM? At the moment I am working with Shruti Hassan and Mithun Chakraborty Sir. Mithun sir’s humility, stardom and way to handle things on set are so endearing and have been a learning experience for me. Shruti is a rock star and a multi-talented girl! She is an actor, music composer, singer, speaks multiple languages and has won many awards for her performance. I feel lucky to have shared the screen with Priyanka Chopra who is a global icon now. With Akshay Kumar sir too I had a fantastic time shooting during Rustom. He is so very disciplined. WHAT ABOUT YOUR OWN PROJECT ON THE KANISHKA CRASH? The Air India Kanishka Crash project is very close to my heart. During the 1985 incident, many people lost their lives including the cabin and cockpit crew. People are unaware of what horror was built into the aircraft while taking off from Canada and before landing in India. I will try my best and make sure that it is out in the right light. Chef Izu Celebrity Chef

N

igeria-born, London-raised Chef Izu Ani is often referred to as “Dubai’s chef”, owing to the number of projects he always seems to have on hand.

WHAT DOES BEING AWARDED A GOLDEN VISA BY THE UAE MEAN TO YOU? I feel honoured and proud to have been recognised with the UAE Gold Card Visa. To me, Dubai is not a transient place, it is somewhere that we can call home, rather than just pass through. It is a destination that allows us to grow. When we invest in ourselves, in our passions and projects, we plant the seeds of development. Seeds that can grow into cities, where we can spread our roots. With hard work comes reward and recognition, and it is so inspiring to live in a place where we are able to achieve our goals. AS AN ARTIST AND CHEF, HOW DOES IT ENCOURAGE YOU? When we work with passion, we can enjoy the art of dedication and practice. By focusing on improving every single day, we can see how much there is to achieve and really embrace the process. I believe that the milestones are often found in the small moments. I find the most pride and pleasure when I am consistent and striving towards my goals every day. Receiving the UAE Golden Visa is a beautiful symbol of recognition and a heart-warming touch that motivates me to keep going, keep building and give something back to our community. Dubai has a way of accelerating our creativity, its ever-evolving nature gives us the ability to expand our skills and learn about different cultures, tastes, flavours and people. DO YOU FEEL MORE KINSHIP TOWARDS THE COUNTRY OWING TO THIS MOVE? Dubai enables us to see the world with the eyes of a child, to explore and build our dreams into our realities, and for that I will always be grateful. The UAE holds a special place in my heart, it is an incredible place to have the opportunity to grow and develop. I feel humbled & thankful to the UAE royal family and its government for their overwhelming support. 44 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2021

Kris Fade Radio Host, Presenter and Entrepreneur

WHAT DOES BEING AWARDED A GOLDEN VISA BY THE UAE MEAN TO YOU? I moved to the UAE 12 years ago, and came here for two, that was the plan. And this country, I fell in love with, has given me everything I could have ever dreamt of. Being offered the Golden Visa, is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I am honoured to carry the Golden Visa and I am just so proud. AS AN ARTIST AND PRESENTER, HOW DOES IT ENCOURAGE YOU? Not that I needed the approval of the Golden Visa or acknowledgment because I love the UAE and always will. But that Golden Visa has brought the UAE even closer to my heart. DO YOU FEEL MORE KINSHIP TOWARDS THE COUNTRY OWING TO THIS MOVE? I believe the UAE does something to many of us. We come here as a guest, we come here as a visitor but very soon we turn into someone so proud of the UAE and we feel like we are UAE citizens even though we are guests in the country. We become so much more than that. We talk of the UAE like we are born and raised in the UAE and the Golden Visa definitely gives me just that little bit more passion. Not that I didn’t have it before but now, I have it even more.

INTERVIEW

"DON'T FLIRT WITH ACTING. MAKE IT A SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP," Says actor Shishir Sharma, who I met in Dubai recently. The Raazi actor is visiting his daughter who lives in Meydan and he was headed for India after shooting in Turkey for the Parineeti Chopra starrer Agent Durga. My meeting with him at a café at The Mall of the Emirates was a free-wheeling chat on theatre, commercials, cinema, voice-overs and OTT over three decades. The actor, whose parents were part of IPTA, who has been seen in a number of series, webseries and films including Raazi and Talvar though, is still recognized for his role in the 90’s T V serial Swabhimaan. Excerpts from the interview. Manju Ramanan 46 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2021

WHAT BRINGS YOU TO DUBAI?

My daughter lives here and I was shooting in Turkey for Agent Durga that stars Parineeti Chopra, Dibyendu, Rajit Kapoor, Sharad Kelkar and Hardee Sandhu. So, Dubai was a natural stopover to see her family and visit the beautiful city.

YOU HAVE PLAYED A NUMBER OF DADS ACROSS CINEMA OVER THE YEARS. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH TYPE-CASTING?

It is irrelevant to me. When I play a general in the Indian army and then a general in the Pakistani army, the way they speak will be different – so I don’t see any typecasting there. Each and every dad I have played is different. No two people are the same and so no two dad characters I have played are the same. If you meant typecasting, I would give you examples of actors such as Jagdish Raj and Iftheqar saab who played inspectors all their lives in films and roles very similar to each other. An actor wants to play each character different than the other. I have been given strict disciplinarian characters to play because that is the way I look! (laughs)

SO, ARE YOU STRICT IN REAL LIFE?

No no! I am what I am. But, if I am offered the role of a principal, I have to bring strictness to the character. I can’t be easy about my character. Nobody has yet given me the role of a sarpanch of a village or a role with comic timing. I did one recently with Renuka Shahane called “What the Fork,” about a man with amnesia and the comic timing was really good.

RAAZI HAS BEEN A MEMORABLE ROLE TO YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

I worked with Meghna Gulzar in Talvar and she is a woman of few words. But after the film I did tell her that I would like to work with her again. I also met Gulzar saab during that time and we became good friends. When Meghna was casting for Raazi, I got a missed call from her. I called her back and she reminded me that I had asked to work with her. I asked my wife to pinch me because I was very excited to work with her again. I went to meet Jogi who narrated the story to me and told me some parts will be narrated by Meghna herself. She met me and narrated the character of General Brigadier Syed, Alia’s father-in-law ‘s role. I can proudly say, it has been my best work till date. The character I was playing had to shift between friendship, love towards the country and loyalty and betrayal. And what breaks him is the fact that his own friend across the border betrays him and he can’t blame him because he is in the service of his country. Meghan and Bhavani Iyer make a lethal combination when it comes to scripting. Dilbaro is a song that will be iconic for a long time and Meghna cried on sets while filming it, so did we.

DO YOU FEEL PEOPLE FROM THEATRE MAKE BETTER ACTORS?

Honestly, yes. Take any theatre actor, starting with Naser saab, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Rajit Kapoor, Rajat Kapoor, Manoj Bajpai, Ashutosh Rana, Irrfan, Atul Kumar, Rohini Hattangadi,

Amrish Puri (I did Aadhe Adhure with him) or Amol Palekar. All these guys come from a focus towards acting and have a strong theatre background. In my workshops, I have always told aspiring actors to start with doing theatre for 5-7 years before facing the camera. In Meghna Gulzar’s Talvar, there is this roundtable scene that was all of 13 pages. All of us at the table were from theatre and we completed the scene in a day and a half because we understood the rhythm. Work was done quicker than usual – lines are not a problem, improvisation isn’t an issue and there is spontaneity and focus that comes from theatre. That’s why I tell my student, don’t flirt with acting. Make it a full-fledged relationship.

YOU ARE EXTREMELY FOND OF NASEER SAAB?

Yes, I am. I met him in 1974 while rehearsing for a Pandit Satyajit Dubey play Sambhog se Sanyaas Tak. I was told to step onstage and I had no background of acting. He had come from FTII and did a workshop with us that I didn’t understand anything about. We started doing this play and then many plays over the years and I got to know him closely. I have seen his ascent and have admired him always to the Naseer he is today. I have always idolized him. Also, my parents have been very close to Ratna Pathak - Shah’s family and she is a dear friend. Ratna is phenomenal too and who can beat her in roles such as Sarabhai vs Sarabhai or the recent Lipstick Under My Burkha.

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE AN ACTOR?

No. I didn’t at all. My parents though were part of IPTA but my father had a business and I helped him with it. I still continue it. I was having lunch at Ratna’s home with Ratna and Sunil Shanbagh and the door opens and in walks this gentleman Pandit Satyajit Dubey who looks at me and tells me that I should be an actor. “Mai tumhe actor banaake hi chhodunga,” he said. He saw in me what I didn’t see in myself. My father had produced MS Sathyu’s Garam Hawa and my mother had starred in Balraj Sahni’s Kabuliwaala. So, the background was there and now I was triggered by this veteran of theatre and acting took over my life completely. Theatre, commercials, voice-over, films and now OTT! I speak Marathi and Gujarati too apart from Hindi and voice-overs are something I enjoy doing because you have to emote with your voice. Television happened in a big way before the Ekta Kapoor era with serials like Swabhimaan, Shanti etc. The content was edgy and modern and we had actors such as Manoj Bajpai, Ashutosh Rana etc. Exciting times and people still call me out on streets as “Major Saxena.”

HAVE YOU FOUND IT EASY TO SAY NO!

I am clear on what I want to do. During the auditions of Shanti, they gave me a bottle of white boot polish and asked me to apply it to my hair to whiten it. I said ‘no way” and suggested another actor’s name. I have said no to web-serials whose content is only to titillate audiences. That is surely not my cup of tea. Even if there are no lines in a role but the part is meaty enough, I am happy to do it. It has to make sense to me to say yes or no. So, yes, I have said no many times. INTERVIEW

STORMING THE SCREEN! The climb to the top has been a slow, but steady one for popular South star Adivi Sesh, who admits to not having had the most conventional start to his now flourishing film career. However, within a decade since his first tryst with facing the camera, the writer-actor has come to be known as one of the dependable names and a bankable star in the Telugu film industry. And this year sees Sesh expand his reach across India as he readies for his first Pan-India release with the multilingual Major, in which he portrays the title character of the 26/11 martyr Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan. The actor is readying to shoot the last leg of his ambitious film when we catch up with him. And in a candid chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the talented star talks all about playing villain before establishing his name as a hero, his dream project, upcoming films and also reveals why he’s not ready for marriage yet

YOU’RE ON A ROLL WITH BACK-TO-BACK HITS, BUT YOUR ENTRY IN THE FILM INDUSTRY IN 2010 WASN’T THE MOST CONVENTIONAL ONE? Yes. I was down from California and a rank outsider. The business isn’t very open and there’s no guidance, but you start learning. I’m grateful that I had the advantage of being able to spend some of my savings in dollars in the initial years (laughs). I thought of people coming from other smaller towns, so I felt better placed than most. Even when I didn’t have a lot of my savings left, perhaps it was just the way I came across that people assumed I was this cool kid from the US, someone who’d probably be driving a Lamborghini back home. WERE YOU? Not back then! (Laughs) But that was the perception that people had. It did give me an edge though with the people I was interacting, because I looked like someone who doesn’t need them. So you slowly learn the ropes and find your way. WHAT WOULD YOU CALL THE TURNING POINT IN YOUR CAREER? My film Kshanam (2016) which was remade in Hindi as Baaghi 2. That was sort of the game-changer in my career. Tab tak I was sort of the lead villain and as a lead actor I had only done one or two films that hadn’t done so well. But I was just working towards gaining that credibility as an actor and I got that with Kshanam that I co-wrote as well. It was like suddenly the people who you respect and look up to were noticing your work. Sajid Sir (filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala) called that he wants to remake it. We knew we had a whopper, but didn’t expect it to be so huge a storm as it turned out to be. IT’S BEEN A LONG WAIT FOR MAJOR SINCE IT WAS FIRST ANNOUNCED… Yes, and we are in no rush to release it in a hurry either. There’s a few days of shoot still remaining that we hope to complete this month (July). It’s a film that required extensive research, plus now we’re waiting for the Covid-19 curve to flatten out too, but it’s been a journey worth the time. It’s a mainstream Hindi as well as Telugu film, so the timing of release is crucial. A lot of films are waiting to release as soon as theatres open up and we want to make sure that we balance the glut of other films. So we will ensure the release happens at the right time and not in a rush just to get the film out there. THIS IS YOUR BOLLYWOOD DEBUT… I don’t think it feels any different. I grew up in the US, so for me it was always that I was making Indian films just in different languages. I don’t look at it as a different industry or different audience. The story is relevant and relatable to everyone from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, so the industry doesn’t really matter. Major is not just a Pan-India film, it is an all-India story.

Unnikrishnan’s life, we are not recreating it step-by-step as it’s not a documentary on his life. So there are cinematic liberties taken though we have stuck true to the essence of who he was and his greatness. So, the biggest learning is of understanding how he would have reacted, rather than imitating his actions. So, this has been a very different way of approaching the part This is by far bigger than any landmark or milestone film in my career. It’s my dream project. YOU’VE BECOME THE GO-TO GUY FOR ANY UNIQUE CONCEPT TO BE EXPLORED IN SOUTH CINEMA, BUT IS THERE A GENRE THAT YOU ARE WAITING TO EXPLORE? Yes, if there’s something different, people do share it with me. But I would love to do a romantic film, that’s something I’ve never done. Like a Badrinath Ki Dulhania which was so beautiful. SO WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER PROJECTS? I’m committed to three films already. One of them is a Telugu bilingual, but the makers are yet to make a formal announcement. This will be my second Hindi film. Then I’m also shooting for HIT 2, it’s a sequel to the cult film HIT: The First Case (2020) and will be on a bigger and better canvas. Goodachari 2 is on the cards after Hit 2. IS IT A CO-INCIDENCE THAT YOUR FILMS ARE BEING PRODUCED BY TWO OF THE BIGGEST SOUTH STARS – MAHESH BABU AND NANI? It is. My favourite actor Mahesh Babu is producing Major and my dear friend Nani and one of my favorite actors again is producing HIT 2. These are game changing actors, I really respect and look up to in many ways. So it’s a lovely feeling. WHAT ABOUT DIRECTION? I realized very early on that I’m not much of a director. I don’t have the temperament for it and definitely it’s a different kind of talent. Direction is from head, acting is from heart. And on set I always have my heart on my sleeve, so I’m not suited to direction I believe. And I’m happy that I’m able to come up with script much before we even approach the set and then someone else is able to take that, visualize it and just make it something beautiful. That’s what happened with Kshanam, that’s what happened with Goodachari. And that’s what’s happening with Major. Interestingly Goodachari is helmed by Major director Sashi Kiran Tikka.

Well, I am in a relationship, but not looking at marriage. I am as far as I can be from the idea of settling down any time soon. In many ways I am married to films at this point (laughs).

WHAT’S BEEN THE EXPERIENCE AND TAKEAWAY AS AN ACTOR FROM THIS FILM? I think whenever we do a film we always strive to do our best, but here it was also a huge sense of responsibility that you are trying to be loyal to someone’s life and do justice to who they are. We have been clear that this is a film inspired by Major Sandeep July 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 49

INTERVIEW

I was told that I was ‘too Indian’ to be successful in

America

Says rapper and singer Raja Kumari. Manju Ramanan chats up with the American Indian artist who was commissioned to perform at the AAPI inaugural ball as part of the Joe BidenKamala Harris Inauguration and has lent her voice to popular chart-busters such as Allah Duhai Hai, Husn Parcham, the Wakhra song besides writing and producing her own musicc. How did you take to the performing arts and blending Bharatanatyam and Hip-hop in one thread? Music has been a big part of my classical dance and training. I am trained in three dance forms: Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam and Odissi. The first dance that I did as a six-year-old was to Mahishasur Mardini, so I was a demon slayer at six. Between the ages of eight and 14, I would do a 15-city tour in India with an elaborate eightpiece orchestra. I just wanted to bring the whole 360 degree drama onto the stage with me through my music and dance. I’ve been practicing Indian classical dance since I was about five years old. I trained with my guru for 7 hours a day. I always knew I wanted to connect people through art, and this was my way of doing that. I think my parents poured all their Indianness in me. To me, it is a big deal. I think when you do it for 20 years, it’s part of you. I haven’t given a performance in a few years as I have been busy with my music but I would love to do a classical performance. Everything I do comes through the prism of classical dance. Apart from

incorporating Indian rhythm in my music, my onstage persona is totally a result of me being a classical dancer first. I can never turn up for a performance without being elaborately dressed. It is sad that Bollywood doesn’t do much classical stuff anymore. It is shocking how a country that preserved certain values and traditions for thousands of years suddenly has begun to forget those in favour of Western culture. I have learnt to treasure whatever bits of India we could find in the US. You don’t know how it feels like to be in a room full of people who look like you. I seldom had that growing up. How did you take to rapping? As a teenager, I started listening to hip-hop music and found that this was the best way to express myself. When I first listened to ‘The Fugees’ The Score that my brother presented to me, I fell in love with music. It wasn’t until I got to high school and was watching bands like NSYNC that I realized I could do this for a

living. In high school, I would always freestyle rap in cyphers and that’s kind of where my style was born. I started writing and recording my own songs and performed at a few clubs here and there and I loved the feeling of being on stage. I wrote poetry as a child and we studied Shakespeare, and things like the iambic pentameter and a lot of stuff about the arts. So when I heard rap and hip-hop, I immediately appreciated it as an art form. It’s poetry set to rhythm. See, I had already toured India with an orchestra, so I had spent time with the violin, mridangam, nattuvangam, veena and flute. I would be intimately involved with ragas but I did not learn it. Like I know adi tala but as a child, nobody sat me down and beat that in me. I learned classical dancing but the music was just something that I was moving to. And I realised that rap was just like jaathi. I remember the day I unlocked the art form, I was like: ‘Oh my god, we have been rapping for thousands of years. Also, I have always felt that hip-hop has been the voice of the marginalised, the minority… it speaks of struggle. I mean, I wasn’t struggling financially because my father was a doctor and as with most American success stories, dad gave me the American dream. But in way of identity, I struggled a lot, especially having to make sense of the two worlds. I had a lot of friends who liked hip-hop and they didn’t have the same lifestyle as me. They were not from very rich neighbourhoods… my best friend MC Bird, we made a hip-hop group together; actually he taught me a lot about hip-hop. The genre also helped me feel and understand everyone. Did being coloured ever pose a challenge to you? How did you deal with it? One of the main issues I faced trying to get started in

America was racism. I was always told to tone down my ethnicity, that I was “too Indian” to be successful in America. I struggled to find someone to look up to as South Asian kid in America. I remember, on weekends I would travel for classical dancing and wouldn’t necessarily share that with my friends. I would come to school with the alta (painting the palms and feet with a red dye) fading on my hands and they’d ask me what is that? Do you have a hand disease? Things are evolving in the US now. I like to call it the ‘brown renaissance’ Indians are more relevant in so many fields, especially entertainment. My family did a really great job for preserving the culture for us. We don’t fake it. We wear sarees for pujas, my mom does Vijayadashami and Navratri, I have studied Indian music and dance. As a result my style is just a balance between the East and the West. I think learning to navigate both worlds with authenticity has helped me become the artist I am today. I have carved a place for myself in the maledominated music circuit by staying authentic and rooted to my culture. I think there a lot of women in the industry who say a lot of things from the female perspective about relationships, broken hearts, love lost, pain, sadness, happiness or sexiness; there are so many of those voices. I felt like we were missing my perspective. Of course, I could sing soft and beautiful songs but there are many people to do that. You were chosen to sing at the virtual Asian American ball recently. Tell us about the experience? I performed “NRI” at the AAPI inaugural ball as part of the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris Inauguration, and representing the IndianAmerican community was absolutely surreal. The song was written out of a desire to claim space that was never meant for us...and performing this song for such a momentous occasion shows just how far we have come as a culture...that a little Indian girl born in Los Angeles could grow up and pursue her dream to represent her culture and be a part of such a historic day. This election was personal for so many of us and watching Kamala Harris become the first South Asian & African American women to hold the office of Vice President will be the most awe inspiring moment...something we tell our children about. The Biden administration has already set the tone by celebrating diversity and cultural exchange, not only on the campaign but also on their choices for the cabinet. A lot of people want to focus on the division in the US, but I’m more inspired than ever to focus on our mutual goals for a better America. I feel proud and can resonate with this administration and am looking forward to a less divided, more united America. Your collaboration with DIVINE and then being part of Gully Boy? Divine and I had been fans of each other’s music for some time and connected on the internet. Gully Boy has given a much-needed fillip to the hip-hop culture and has made the genre more mainstream. I feel India has so much talent and that hip hop revolution has begun! July 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 51

INTERVIEW

Different shades of

Divya! Divya Dutta has broken every box that she’s been pushed to fit in as an actor and chosen not to be stereotyped in any image. Ask the powerhouse performer and she’ll tell you that if there’s one thing she most craves for when it comes to choosing her roles, then it is the chance to explore something completely different from what she’s already done on screen. And whether it’s Shabbo of Veer-

Zaara or Shobha of Badlapur, Kajri of Ram Singh Charlie or Jalebi of Delhi 6, the actress has played each of these different roles with equal conviction and credibility winning hearts and critical acclaim alike. And as we catch up with Divya Dutta for an exclusive interview, the talented actress tells Aakanksha Naval-Shetye about her journey of making those bold, unconventional choices, shares what the real Divya truly is like and reveals her upcoming films that include international projects as well. Excerpts

FROM A VERY CONVENTIONAL BOLLYWOOD DEBUT TO THESE UNCONVENTIONAL VERSATILE ROLES THAT YOU’VE COME TO BE KNOWN FOR, HOW’S THE JOURNEY BEEN? It’s been an interesting journey. What’s been really good is that I carved my own path than follow the rules that were set. I came in at a time of multi-starrers, did a few films that were like with a lot of dance numbers that I thoroughly enjoyed. But I was always considered more of an ‘actor’ and I too was craving for more of acting-oriented stuff which I wasn’t doing that time. But it changed with Train to Pakistan and that kind of put me on a different track. You know I had always dreamt of being launched by Yash Chopra and that was my biggest wish. That happened in the most unconventional way when I did his Veer-Zaara. The film was like my relaunch in Bollywood. And I kind of smiled to the universe that it did hear me after all and I got reintroduced to the industry by the man I wanted to be introduced by in the first place. IN AN INDUSTRY WHERE IT’S EASY TO BE TYPECAST, HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO BRING THE VERSATILITY IN YOUR CHOICE OF ROLES? Yes, like right after Veer-Zaara, apart from the recognition, I realised that I was flooded with similar kind of offers. There were the biggest makers, the best of money, the best of co-stars, but I didn’t work for a year as I didn’t want to go on doing the same kind of roles. So yes you

52 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2021

29/06/2021 2:45 PM

do let go off projects and that’s a price you pay to gain that versatility in roles. In fact, I was so frustrated that when Delhi-6 came my way and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra offered me the role of Jalebi, the first thing I asked him was if it was a ‘Punjabi vivacious role’ and he said no. So I asked him why was he offering it to me and he said because I was a good actor. And I took it on and it was a fabulous journey because it was a role totally unlike me. It helped me shed all my inhibitions as an actor and taught me to be totally bindass in front of the camera. So that film also won many awards but what it brought me was similar kind of roles again. So I realised that every role that you do and you do well, people will always offer you the same stuff. So I think the journey then on became a journey of reinventing myself with every film rather than do a lot more films and not be happy and satisfied about it. SO VEER-ZAARA, DELHI-6… WHICH OTHER FILMS WOULD YOU CALL THE MILESTONES IN YOUR CAREER? After Delhi-6, it was Stanley Ka Dabba and then Bhaag Milkha Bhaag that made me like the nation sister (laughs) and the kind of reverence that came my way became very hard to break. And then came Badlapur that again changed the game for me. I think after Badlapur filmmakers realized that if they come to me, they have to come with different roles and that kind of gave me an image of not having an image. And I love that. IN YOUR RECENT RAM SINGH CHARLIE WE AGAIN GOT TO SEE A VERY DIFFERENT YOU… This film was a journey for me, because I remember when Nitin (director Nitin Kakkar) was narrating the story, I upfront said I wanted to play the wife’s role and he said that I didn’t fit in because I’m an established star and he was making the film with his Filmistaan team. So I asked him if he thought that I couldn’t perform, and he said I could, so then I told him that it was his problem to present me not as a star. In fact I had even told him to see who else could perform as well. And after a month, he asked me to play Kajri, and I asked him how would he present me differently? Well, the role brought out the most vulnerable aspect of me as an actor as he did not allow a speck of make-up on me. You are so used to the vanity that stripping that off was a revelation. There would’ve been no Kajri if he didn’t present me the way he did. I don’t think I ever looked the way I did in Ram Singh Charlie, so yes that was a very different Divya you got to see in it. It’s beautiful to work with such directors whose journeys are so amazing and you are a part of it, it is satiating to be a part of their films.

I THINK AFTER BADLAPUR FILMMAKERS REALIZED THAT IF THEY COME TO ME, THEY HAVE TO COME WITH DIFFERENT ROLES AND THAT KIND OF GAVE ME AN IMAGE OF NOT HAVING AN IMAGE. AND I LOVE THAT.

BUT YOU NEED TO BE FEARLESS AS AN ACTOR TO TAKE SUCH RISKS… WHERE DO YOU GET THAT FROM? You just have to be honest to yourself. My first and foremost duty is towards myself to thoroughly enjoy my biggest passion which is acting and I will not enjoy it if I keep July 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 53

INTERVIEW

I’M AN ABSOLUTE CHILD-WOMAN! I’VE SEEN A LOT OF PEOPLE SAY THEY ARE CONSCIOUS OF ME, BUT IT’S THE KIND OF SERIOUS IMAGE THAT SAVES ME BEFORE PEOPLE KNOW ME. BUT IF I’M COMFORTABLE WITH A PERSON, THEY GET TO SEE A VERY FUN SIDE.

expectations. So, it’s never a pressure, it keeps me going on to discover and rediscover myself. And I think that’s the magic mantra.

doing the same stuff. So I don’t ever take up a role that keeps me in my comfort zone. I take on roles that make me nervous. I like taking on such challenges and I’m so glad that filmmakers give me those kind of roles. To look into the mirror and find a different Divya each time is very satiating. And if that isn’t happening then there’s no point in the process. TODAY THE FOCUS IS NOT JUST ON THE STARS ALONE, BUT HAS MOVED LARGELY ON THE CHARACTER ACTORS… I’ve never liked the word ‘character actor’ because how I look at it, you are either an actor or you are not. Earlier it used to be hero, heroine, supporting actor, comedian, and villain. So, when I started to be different, people didn’t know where to place me, because I wasn’t the lead, yet my roles were most significant. So, I was doing this earlier as well and it’s not different for me, but now everyone seems to be doing it. And I’m glad. DO YOU FEEL THAT PRESSURE OF CHOOSING YOUR NEXT ROLE? I sometimes feel that I’m representing the audience myself when I’m choosing a role. It’s very instinctive and intuitive. I see if I’m going to enjoy the journey of the role. And if I enjoy it, the surge of excitement shows and the audience can feel it too and it reflects on the audience. Besides, it’s lovely to see

IS THERE ANY SPECIFIC GENRE ON YOUR WISHLIST? You know you’re asking a greedy actor what she wants. There’s lots I want to do. I recently did Music Teacher, it’s a very Gulzar type of movie and the songs are all Pancham da kind of music. My most favourite song ‘Phir Wahi Raat Hai’ from Ghar has been filmed on me so I like this genre of what you’d call a very mature romance or love story. I’d like to do more of that. But more than the genre, it’s working with directors who can see you and present you differently and they make your journey exciting in which ever role you take up. Like I’ve just done an action thriller Dhaakad that has me playing a crazy, mad role and I surprised myself by finding such a mean streak in myself, like am I really like this! So it’s fun. It’s great to find things even you’re not aware of and the director manages to get something totally different out of you. So that’s the most amazing thing, there are directors who have a vision and you follow it and pave your path to create a completely new role. HOW IS THE REAL DIVYA LIKE? I’m an absolute child-woman! I’ve seen a lot of people say they are conscious of me, but it’s the kind of serious image that saves me before people know me. But if I’m comfortable with a person, they get to see a very fun side. I like to be real, I don’t like carrying a façade of an image, and I am just what I am. That keeps me grounded and happy and it will never take me far away from myself. TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS There’s a beautiful subtle-drama directed by Dibaker Banerjee called Freedom. Then there’s Umesh Shukla’s comedy film, Anubhav Sinha’s satire. And then there’re two web-shows but I can’t talk about them and I am supposed to start three films here that’ve been pushed to postAugust sometime and I have two international projects as well. So, I’m glad that I have covered all genres and I’m getting to explore different styles with different directors.
