he pious month of Ramadan ends reinstating the qualities of generosity, charity, reaching out to the less fortunate and the spirit of giving. With Eid celebrations, this is the time to bring each other closer with food, festivities and travel. With the pandemic quelled in most parts of the world, people are setting out to travel with the new normal norms in place. This edition celebrates adventure in its essence – the spirit of quest for newer experiences, vistas and people. Aakanksha Singh who was seen in Runway 34 was in Dubai vacationing with her friends and I caught up with her. She wrote a poem for none other than Mr Amitabh Bachchan who responded back with a poem and some kind words. Read her interview and check out the translated poem for you all. In the Southern cinema section, check out my interview with music composer Rahul Subramanium who is keen to start a music academy in Dubai that specialises in breathing techniques of yoga. Also meet Dubai’s new resident and Golden visa holder, fitness coach and spin cycling expert Baqar Nasser, whose unique story is sure to move you. Baqar lost his mother in Mumbai during the pandemic and her funeral, that seemed to be an impossibility happened miraculously with the help of his influential friends, good will and a dash of divine intervention. His story can easily inspire a good sports biopic that Bollywood seems to be chasing these days. As for our YouTube interviews, check out my interview with Grammy awardee Rickey Kej, flautist Navin Kumar and entrepreneur and star wife Gauri Khan. As we conduct season 3 of our annual talent hunt Arab Asia Starz this year, we will have the beautiful Richa Chadha grace our event and judge our entries. The event is being held at the High Note Pool Sky Lounge and Pool bar at Al Mina. Keep up to our social media pages to know more about Arab Asia Starz Season 3. The season for celebrations are on. Wish you all a happy and safe Eid break!

A SUHOOR TO REMEMBER

Bespoken Bliss ! Reach out to the stars!

T

he holy month of Ramadan – of fasting and festive-gifting, of beautiful Iftars and blessed Suhoors - has come to an end as the city celebrates Eid in all its glory! And as we move full throttle into the month ahead, we are also staring right at the infamous Dubai summers. But that’s not the only thing that’s setting the temperatures soaring. Raising the heat is our Arab Asia Starz Season 3 for which the votings are on and the event is already a marked date in Dubai Social Calendars. Get ready to be dazzled and bowled over by the young talents across Entertainment, Beauty and Fashion who were shortlisted by our celebrity judges – Mr Rizwan Sajan, Founder and Chairman of Danube Group; Ace Bollywood Choreographer and debutant Director Bosco Martis; Renowned Celebrity Hairstylist Dani Hiswani and celebrated Fashion Designer Lara Shareef. Gracing this much-talked about event will be our Cover Star Richa Chadha! The actress is well-known for her outstanding performances in rather brave roles and she will be here cheering the winners with us. Lauding the digital talent hunt, the Bollywood star tells me that it is amazing to see deserving young artistes get such a wonderful stage to showcase their talents. Check out all about it on www.arabasiastarz.com The month also has me excited for a very special movie – no points for guessing – it is Tom Cruise returning with Top Gun: Maverick. Reprising his role as Lt Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, the actor who fuelled fantasies and became a global crush, is back after 36 years no less! But the Hollywood heartthrob’s charm doesn’t seem to have diminished a bit and I, like most women on the planet can’t wait to see him ‘Take our Breaths Away’ once again as he takes to the skies thundering, ‘I feel the need, the need for speed’! Well, that’s the magic of Tom Cruise. But to think of it, Dubai too is a place that does take your breath away, especially if you are a true-blue adventure junkie. Sky diving to deep pool diving and from zip-lining to exploring the wilds in a safari, there’s something for all outdoor enthusiasts. Turn the pages to plan your own adventure trail!

So... Get, Set, Go! keep loving & stay sassy

WEDDING ZINGERS Ranbir Kapoor and Alia’s romance started on the sets of Brahmastra in 2017. Though it was in 2013 on Koffee With Karan that Alia first professed she has a crush on Ranbir. Their first public appearance was during the Sonam Kapoor-Anand Ahuja wedding in 2018. During the 2019 Filmfare Awards, Alia said I Love You to Ranbir Kapoor on stage and created a fan frenzy. In 2020 they made their relationship insta-official. And they confessed that they would’ve gotten married but covid got in the way. They later started appearing in public together on a regular basis and even vacationed together. In March 2022, we heard the buzz of their April marriage. It was a hush-hush affair till the last minute, where every kind of secrecy was maintained. We wish them a blissful married life for years to come.

Ram Charan, who is currently basking in the success of his latest release RRR, has stated that while he expected the film to be a hit, he never expected it to top the global box office on its first weekend. “I did expect it to be a big hit, but the No 1 tag I never expected – that was a beautiful surprise. That was mind-blowing for us, even for Rajamouli I feel.” Ram Charan, who plays Alluri Sitaram Raju in the movie has reportedly gifted 10 gram gold coins each to all his RRR unit crew and other assistants. The actor hosted a breakfast and invited the team. After breakfast, Ram Charan reportedly gave one kg. sweetbox with 1 Tola gold coin to them. The gold coin had the RRR symbol embossed on one side and Ram Charan’s name on the other side.

AMITABH BACHCHAN RESUMES SUNDAY MEETS WITH FANS Amitabh Bachchan has resumed his weekly meetings with fans at the gate of his Mumbai home, Jalsa, on Sundays. Amitabh wrote on his blog that if the meets are arranged, it will be done with caution. He also referred to the relaxation of several Covid-19 protocols in Mumbai as a blessing. “Alright... the news about the city of Mumbai is that no more masks and protocol of CoviD... which comes as a blessing... and the restrictions of flights in the International to be given operations as normal... So hopefully travel from far off lands shall be in permission... and perhaps the Sunday meets at the Jalsa gate on the Sunday to be revived, albeit with given precautions... Such a desire to look forward to when I am back”, he penned. The thespian’s meets are something his fans look forward to and we’re sure they’re happy to have him back.

S(K)INTILLATING SUMMER WHAT HAPPENS TO SKIN IN THE SUMMER?

Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Saif Ali Khan recently met Saudi Arabia’s Culture Minister Bader Bin Farhan Alsaud. They were reportedly discussing collaboration opportunities. Alsaud later took to his social media to share pictures where he is seen posing with the top Bollywood actors. He captioned the post, “It was great to meet members of the thriving Indian film community including Bollywood superstars @iamsrk @BeingSalmanKhan @ akshaykumar #SaifAliKhan and explore partnership opportunities together! #SaudiMinistryOfCulture #Saudivision2030.” Shah Rukh Khan had also very recently hosted the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival, Mohammed Al Turki at his Mumbai home Mannat. Al Turki shared an Instagram post captioned, “Ramadan Greetings from India with my brother @iamsrk”.

TOM HANKS TO BE SHOWN LAAL SINGH CHADDHA People have been super excited ever since Aamir Khan announced the Hindi remake of Tom Hanks starrer Forrest Gump. The English film was exceptional and with the veteran Hollywood star in the lead, it has only raised the bar and expectations from the Hindi remake. We hear that Aamir Khan is planning to have a special screening of the film for Tom Hanks. According to a source, “Closer to the release of Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir would hold the screening for Tom Hanks in the US or travel there to personally show him the film. It is because he wants Tom Hanks to watch Laal Singh Chaddha and share his thoughts.” The film is helmed by Advait Chandan and co-produced by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. Aamir Khan will be sharing screen space alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh, and Naga Chaitanya. The film is slated to release on August 11, 2022.

ALIA BHATT’S SERIES OF FIRSTS WHILE SHOOTING RRR SS Rajamouli’s period action drama RRR reached a figure of 900 crores worldwide in just ten days. RRR can be considered Alia Bhatt’s stellar debut in South Films. Alia Bhatt played the role of Sita in the movie, which also stars Jr NTR and Ram Charan in lead roles. Alia recently shared a video on her YouTube channel titled, “The first of many on RRR by Alia Bhatt”. In the video, she describes the things that she has done for the first time while shooting for RRR. She recalls how she learned and spoke Telugu for the first time for the movie, and learned both the lyrics and dance to Sholay as the lyrics were kept strictly confidential. She also shares that she had biryani on set for the first time. The Gangubai actress also shares her experience working with SS Rajamouli, she talks about how the director would narrate stories from Amar Chitra Katha. The video makes for a very interesting watch, as it gives us a lot of insights into the hit movie.

Extra sunshine in the summer naturally causes the skin’s environment to change. This requires us to take extra measures to ensure we are protected. More hours spent in the sun make it absolutely crucial to apply (and re-apply) adequate UV protection to avoid skin cancer, brown spots, wrinkles, and sagging skin. While many would describe tanned skin as a “healthy glow,” skin actually darkens when exposed to sunshine as a protective measure against UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. There are also aesthetic treatments you can book at our Dubai office to ensure you are practicing the best summer skin care. The skin specialists at AAMC are here to keep you looking and feeling your best all year long, no matter your skin type or concerns. Here are our suggestions for med spa treatments to book for the best summer skin care of your life!

She’s brave when it comes to choosing her roles, but she’s even more fearless when it comes to speaking her mind Meet Richa Chadha! Known for her power-packed performances in movies like Gangs of Wasseypur, Masaan, Fukrey, Sarbjit, the actress has wowed critics and audience alike pulling off some of the most unconventional roles and playing strong women characters on screen with great aplomb. And the year ahead isn’t too different for Richa who has an impressive slate of projects lined up, including her maiden production. We caught up with the actor-producer for an exclusive interview, and in a candid chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the feisty star talks all about her bold choices, her vision as a producer and also reveals her wedding plans with actor Ali Fazal. Excerpts

Right from the beginning of your career, your choice of roles has not been the most conventional heroine characters we were used to seeing. What made you so fearless when it came to picking up the kind of non-conforming and disruptive roles that you did? I guess from having confidence in my skill as an actor! That’s it, mostly. I feel like I can do anything when it comes to performances. So I guess if you are confident of your skill-set, and you are confident of your preparation as an actor, then there comes a certain confidence in your dialogue delivery or your swag and a lack of inhibition. Has it ever happened that people found you intimidating just because of the roles you’ve portrayed on screen? Yes, it’s happened a lot of times. People are surprised to see me gentle or vulnerable. But honestly, it’s their problem. I think it’s very childish if they go around assuming how a person or an actor is based on their screen roles. I find it silly when people say, “… but we thought you are like this.” Even directors often assume and tell me “Oh but we thought you are like that” But, I am not going to dispel their notions and they can think whatever they want to. You have played such versatile roles, maybe it’s difficult to figure out the real Richa behind all the reel characters… So, what’re you really like? It’s good if people can’t figure it out. That way I’ll have a real life, a real personality left. I don’t think I have done any part that’s close to who I am yet, because they have been very experimental and unusual. Most of them, especially in the Indie-commercial space. So I think if I probably write something for myself, then I can give a more real portrayal of what I am like. As for what I am really like, well, I’m May 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 13

him and its vice versa too! We are intellectually stimulated in each other’s company.

Is marriage on the cards for you and Ali Fazal this year? Yes, hopefully, we will find time for it this year. We both are kind of lazy about it (laughs). You know wedding is a lot of work, inviting people… so low-key we are very petrified of the social ramifications of the process. But yes, hopefully this year we’ll plan it. Something tasteful and small. We can never do a big tamasha out of it. We will party but we’re not interested in doing anything huge, that’s not us.

When you did all those roles back then, they were not the most conventional choices and the scenario today is far more accepting when it comes to normalizing flawed female characters, especially with the influx of OTT… Well, there were strong roles being written for women back when I started too. Like I remember in 2013 I was nominated for the Filmfare Awards alongside Sridevi for English Vinglish, Vidya Balan for Kahaani 2, Priyanka Chopra for Barfi, Rani Mukerji for Aiyya, and Kareena Kapoor for Heroine, and I was very happy being in the company of all these power house performers. But yes, those kind of roles are far more in number, more acceptable and normalized today due to the OTT. A lot of content is female-led on the OTT too. So I really feel there will be

What do you most like about Ali? He’s a very committed, hardworking and diligent person. What I love about him is that he keeps himself engaged, he reads a lot, he likes to solve puzzles and out of curiosity he will even read up a book on Math! So that really keeps things exciting and I’m very happy to learn from

more changes and there will be more representation of all age groups and genders. And this change is global. One has a lot of freedom today when it comes to choosing interesting, engaging, and meaningful pieces. You started off with doing roles that many actresses hope to do at some point in their careers… Honestly I would think that a lot of actresses are luckier today because they have had the chance of really juicy author-backed roles and characters. Of course the mega stars always had it but someone like Sanya Malhotra are incredibly lucky to do huge commercial films and then do such a diverse role so quickly like she did with The Photograph. There are a lot of actresses whose fan I am, like Tillotama Shome did a Monsoon Wedding and she’s brilliant in Sir. Then there’s Kalki Koechlin who’s consistently so amazing. As for me, I really don’t look at myself as a trailblazer, I would say the roles have been trailblazing incredibly written parts.

29/04/2022 4:59 PM

How has your process of choosing projects changed over the years? I guess my only change has been that I have become smarter about who not to work with! Earlier I didn’t have that kind of smartness about me, I really took people at face value. Now I’m more careful about making these choices, I like to know who is making the film, their background, their past works, and what’s the bandwidth like in terms of the budgets, etc. I remember, earlier I would not worry about any of these. But today I have become very choosy, and if I feel that I can write a better script than the one being offered to me, then I won’t do the film, even though I have never written a script before. I don’t know where this confidence comes from. Maybe it’s foolish (laughs) I don’t know. If I am not convinced I will not do it. And then I’ll just work on something else. I have been doing it a lot more off late. This year especially, I’ll straight up say no. What were the game-changers for you? My game-changer would be Gangs of Wasseypur. It just blew everyone’s minds and became a cult film, then Fukrey has an undying audience too. It proved to be a game-changer in a different way as it was young people carrying the film and it opened the commercial world for me. Then Masaan, which was just one of the most beautiful films in my filmography and something I’m very proud of. Now I want to get to the next level by hopefully creating something in my own voice. Has there been a change in roles coming your way and are you happier with what’s on offer? I am happy, I am satisfied, not content – I feel like for me to truly stretch my full limit and explore my potential, I’ll only have to write something for myself. I’d been thinking of that for a long time and I’m in the process now. So if you were to make a film on yourself what would it be like? Maybe something like a fantasy or surrealism. Nothing normal.! No simple boy meets girl romance! Are there any rules you follow?

I don’t have any rules as such. But I have said no to anything that has made me uncomfortable in the past, even if there’s big money involved or it’s a big banner. If something doesn’t sit right, then I say a ‘no’ without wasting anyone’s time. In all these years, it’s not like I haven’t made mistakes, I have made plenty. But if there’s one advice I would give to newcomers, then I’d say

that saying no is far more important than saying a yes. Don’t be in a hurry to doing everything that comes your way. All your mistakes guide you along the way too. Do you think the OTT has washed out the star-system? There’s been a change for sure, but all actors and stars have their own niche markets. There’s TV, or the option of being able to jump from TV to doing films… That transition is more evidence now and the people’s acceptance for character actors is a lot more evident. With the boom of OTT, you watch what keeps you most engaged. Also actors who were say popular only in theatre also have been introduced in households. So technology necessitates that revolution. Also there’s social media. So I don’t know if the star system has been washed out, but it’s a diversification for sure. Like Shah Rukh Khan’s stardom will not be affected by this, but now there are other niches where people worship the other celebrity too. Also tell us about your upcoming projects? There’s Fukrey 3, The Great Indian Murder Season 2, Candy 2, a film in July, then another film - a crossover towards the end of the year and in October we will be taking the film that we are producing on the floors, so yes it’s a busy year ahead. That’s also what’s keeping us very busy. What can we catch you doing when you’re not facing the camera? THIS! (laughs) I’m a regular person… So gardening, or just spending time with my cat or meeting friends or writing something… it could be anything. Well, I realized that I was the busiest during the lockdown, because it was a forced break for me. Never do I get a break like this. Of course there were household chores, but I still found the time to explore new hobbies, to try and write and I can multitask very well. Even now I’m busy because I have come back home after a month of shoot, and I have a lot of production work.

Tell us more about your production house Pushing Buttons Studios… We have just started so we’re still taking baby steps there. I would really want more time in hand for it. As a producer what content are you looking

at putting out and do you have any preferences between OTT and cinema? I want to just get behind interesting stories. If they turn out as shows then good enough, or if they turn out to be independent films then we take them to festivals. The story will show which platform it belongs to and we will try to find its spot.

FASHION & BEAUTY

THREAD TALK

Costume designer Sheetal Sharma explains his vision to Tanisha Bhattacharya

Sheetal Sharma who has lensed a palette of engrossing storytelling through his costumes in films like Kesari, Manto, Stree, Mimi and Gangubai Kathiawadi, highlights the power and prowess of characterisation through the art that is costuming. He narrates a tale where films meet fashion - as he peels off the layers of the pristine wardrobe on the silver screen, which makes the audiences gasp with an enviable sigh. He delves deeper as he unearths the carefully embedded details in the outfits that elevate the storyline to a captivating height. He draws your attention to what makes the characters of the film come live through the garbs they don. Excerpts...

Gangubai Kahthiawadi

How did you discover your passion for costume designing? I was inclined since childhood towards art and craft. Artworks of the Renaissance period and Victorian art and clothing, the beautiful depiction of beauty and drapes of saree in Raja Ravi Verma paintings, Pakistani artist Abdur Rahman Chughtai, art derived from miniature Mughal art paintings were a great influence.

During my time in fashion college, we were introduced to the beauty of World Cinema and its magical power to bring art forms alive. Films like Amelie, In The Mood For Love, Fallen Angels or V Shantaram films did play a very important part for my passion towards film costume designing. After a three years course in fashion technology and a top-up MA in London on costume designing, I met a college senior who

18 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST May 2022

introduced me to film making and costume designing in films. Miss Lovely was my first project, it showed me the potential to explore art with ensembles and I loved it and to top it, it was a film based in the backdrop of the ‘80s. Getting to work with director Ashim Ahluwalia was a great learning experience for a first-timer. The rest just followed. What is your take on costumes being used for characterization in films? As a costume designer I always try to imagine a backstory to the character, episodes, or situations of the past that would have influenced the characters. The most difficult part in such situations is convincing the actors to go out of their way to allow some discomfort so that the essence of the character is more authentic on screen. When you are too comfortable with the way you walk or how your outfits look - you are restricting yourself to being a star, when you surpass that and work hard on yourself, the character

Meena Kumari’s style of hair, her walk, and the way she wore her pallu slightly on her head and tucked into her blouse became the main reference for Gangubai Kathiawadi comes to play. You’ve done multiple period projects - Kesari, Manto, Raees, Airlift, and the most recent ones - The Empire and Gangubai Kathiawadi - how would you say the process of costume designing differs in a commercial film from that of a period production? Research is the core of any period drama. Especially when you talk about realistic content. For Kesari, a quick visit to the Saragarhi museum in Amritsar and books suggested by director Anurag Singh were very helpful.

Rafih FiLLi Founder and CEO of FiLLi Café,

Brewing Success! I

t was their Signature Zafran Tea that first took the tea-drinking experience in the UAE with a storm and what started as a dream is today a globally-renowned iconic brand as they make their presence felt in six countries with more than 70 outlets. But, for Founder and CEO of FiLLi Café, Rafih FiLLi, this is just the beginning. In an exclusive interview with Aakanksha NavalShetye, the ace businessman and the man behind the super-successful chain of FiLLi Cafés, talks not only about transforming the traditional ‘tea drinking’ experience in the UAE, but also shares his plans to reach out to even more countries including the USA, UK, Canada, India, and Saudi Arabia Photography : Yasir Arafat

You are known as the man who transformed the traditional ‘tea drinking’ experience in the UAE, was that the goal when you first started out? Yes, I found this opportunity from the start: when it comes to places to drink tea, there’s nothing quite like coffee shops. The iconic brand name FiLLi seems to have a very interesting backstory, can you tell us more about how the name came about? Yes, we playfully called our group of friends FiLLi, made of all the members’ initials. Was it initially difficult to break into the market with your signature tea, considering it was largely known to be

dominated by coffeedrinkers? I would not call it difficult because tea is a part of UAE’s culture, and many people drink it here multiple times in a day. But convincing everybody to pay more for tea in the beginning was challenging, as they were used to paying only .50 per cup. What would you say sets FiLLi café apart from the others in the market, what’s its USP? At FiLLi, taste is the sole reason why each of our customers keep coming back. The Signature Zafran Tea was appreciated by people and thus began a new trend that is going global.

FiLLi set the precedent right from the beginning by establishing themselves as an ambient and cosy hang out spot for endless conversations rather than just another tea joint. Besides your iconic saffron-tea, every dish on the menu seems to be wellcurated, tell us more about that process? Yes, it’s a specially curated branded experience. We have a unique tea and food range using premium ingredients served in a fashionable environment. Each recipe is developed from the Indian subcontinent and offers the best in street food - much of which is eaten during festive times. Our recipes

INTERVIEW

have been tweaked to create a unique blend of authentic Indian spices and flavours. What’s been your ingredient for success? I had many ideas when I was young and dreamed of accomplishing them. Throughout my journey, I always focused on achieving my goals, never doubting myself and never looking back. From your first outlet to now owning a successful chain of multiple outlets in over six countries, it’s quite an inspirational journey. How do you look back at it? I am grateful to the United Arab Emirates and our loyal customers, who have helped us grow. And I shouldn’t forget to mention the aspirational work done by my team. We consider it a great honor to be known as an UAE born brand, and we are working hard to become a global brand. So much more is possible for us to accomplish. Globally, what are the markets you are now looking at exploring further? USA, UK, Canada, India, Saudi Arabia! How is Dubai as a market different from other markets and which markets would you say have been the most challenging for you? UAE is a very dynamic market. You will be exposed to many new things, which you may find inspirational and may frequent often. Dubai is a city that adopts trends quickly. UK was challenging for us. Covid happened in between and it became worst. 28 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST May 2022

29/04/2022 9:47 PM

However, now it is a fresh start for us in the UK, and I am very optimistic about the potential of that market. What’s your vision ahead for the brand? We aspire to be the Starbucks of Tea. No matter where you are, there should be a nearby FiLLi that’ll warm you up! Our mission is to be a global concept of FiLLi Tea n’ Talk by creating exceptional experience for our guests, meaningful opportunities of growth for our team members, high value for our stakeholders and a positive impact in our communities. And our vision is to pour a unique cup of saffron tea globally in the warmth of passion - IN EVERY CUP, EVERY TIME, EVERYWHERE! Besides, helming the brand and the business, what are the other passions you pursue? Travelling and exploring new tea-related innovations. The brand FiLLi is also a featured case study in the Harvard Business Studies, what’s the one lesson you’d say your success story has that everyone can learn from? There is no short cut to success. Aim to be successful because in your achievement there lies a success of thousands. From your experience, what does it take to be a market leader? Embrace the change! When life gives you lemons, be a lemonade maker. As a successful market leader what have been your must-follow rules in business? Work hard. Stay focused. And get it done. What is the one advice you’d share with aspiring entrepreneurs? Not all ideas are genius, but those that go further than the brain have a good chance.

We consider it a great honor to be known as an UAE born brand, and we are working hard to become a global brand. So much more is possible for us to accomplish.

HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK AT CONTENT THEN AND TODAY? Growing up, several things I have been part of NSD and FTII before I joined Shekhar Kapoor as an AD – then worked closely with Javed Akhtar, Boney Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Anupam Kher etc– our group was work oriented. The training has always been to adapt to the times to be happy and successful. The audience was innocent back then. They weren’t informed about stardom or editing. Today there is no mystery to the star anymore. Now social media is the watchdog – if you are accepted, you are accepted well. Or you can be trolled mercilessly. Real cinema has taken over and it is a great time for content creators. As an actor, I can say that if I essayed Calendar in Mr India back then, I also did a Soorma, Udta Punjab, Scam and Bloody Brothers. YOUR SCRIPT OF KAGAZ WAS ONE OF THE BEST IN HINDI CINEMA? Yes, it was one of the best films of last year. I bought the rights in 2003 and wrote and rewrote the film. In fact, my wife was so tired of me talking about making the film that she told me either chuck it or make it. My friend Vikas Maroo from Dubai is one of its producers and the film ‘found its own destiny,’ as the great Raj Kapoor would say. I signed Pankaj Tripathi for the film when no one would put money on him. He was my junior at NSD and I knew his potential. He was so thrilled when I approached him because I had spoken to other actors like Nana Patekar before that. The fact that a man in India, due to a faulty government record was declared dead and spent 18 years of his life proving to the world that he was alive, made for a fantastic topic for a film. I happened to narrate it to Salman Khan during the making of Bharat in Malta. He took to it instantly and said he would produce it. I told him that like Tere Naam was one of the best films of his career, he would be proud of Kaagaz. And it is true. It turned out to be one of the best films of last year. It is a film rooted in reality of Indian life. I had called it ‘Sache bharat ki sacchi kahaani’. People today want us to narrate our own stories and are not awed by

Switzerland and America. The stories are in the small towns. NOW THAT YOU HAVE SET THE BAR HIGH WITH KAAGAZ, WHAT IS YOUR NEXT FILM? I am working on a script wherein my protagonist is a 55-year old woman. The movie is called Aarti and it is a big screener. I took a Malayalam movie rights – Nirnayakam that I watched in 2016. It is based on right to protest versus the right to movement. I am apolitical in my film but they do make a point about our governmental systems. After Kaagaz a lot of government officials told me that I had made fun of the workings of the governmental system in a good humoured way but not in a negative way. Humour is a great trope to tell uncomfortable stories. YOU WORK A LOT WITH NEWCOMERS? Yes, I do. I keep speaking to a lot of writers from nowhere. There was a man in my village in Haryana who gave me a script that was eventually made into a Haryanvvi film, “Choriyaan chhoro se kam nahi hoti.” It won the national award too. Dialogues of my film Kaagaz were written by two advertising agency boys from Delhi. I keep looking for good writers. And look at me. I had

not written a simple inland letter in my life but my career made me be a writer apart from being an actor, producer and director. WHAT ABOUT STARTING AN OFFICE IN DUBAI? I am here on a family trip and collect my UAE visa. I was thinking that it is a great idea to work in Dubai - it offers a great space for shoots, equipment is high tech and we are not far from Mumbai and Delhi and so many people speak Hindi and Urdu. In fact, we are touched by the warmth of this place. The other day, we were at Dubai Mall and we went to a coffee shop that made a special coffee for my daughter Vanshika on the house. Also, you can tell Indian stories here that are multinational since there aren’t any biases here. Actually, this is the best period of my career. I am in the position to give new talent chances. I worked with Pankaj Tripathi as the main protagonist years ago, today is a huge name to reckon with. YOU WORKED WITH RISHI KAPOOR IN HIS LAST EVER FILM? Yes. Sharmaji Namkeen is an unusual concept because Paresh Raval stepped in to complete Rishi Kapoor’s role in the film after he passed away. About 50 percent of the film was over and then Paresh Raval took over. Rishi Kapoor has been the darling of the masses and the perfect romantic hero but the second phase of his career blew everyone’s mind. When he was offered Agneepath, he had scared the producers off but they were persistent and he did the film and look at the legacy he left behind. He directed me in Aa Ab Laut Chalein, his first directorial and I was to direct him in one of my films and he passed away. It is very tragic since we had good fun while shooting Sharmaji Namkeen. He had come home from the US after treatment and was doing well, always joking and narrating qissas on set. We will miss and cherish him forever.

MY NEXT FILM HAS THE MAIN PROTAGONIST AS A 52-YEAROLD-WOMAN. THE FILM IS RELATED TO TERRORISM. May 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 31

INTERVIEW

Game-changer! Lavanya Vikram, the founder-owner of the successful chain of Blush N Curls, talks to Aakanksha Naval-Shetye about staying ahead of the curve and being a game-changer in the industry with her salons going chemical-free What keeps you and your chain of Blush N Curls salons ahead of the curve? I do a lot of research in terms of keeping the salons regularly upgraded with the latest in chemical-free products and all products are tried and tested before we launch them for the customers. We host wellness events and educational events under our BNC Awareness Program through social media on topics like how to be safe and going chemical free. I also do TV Wellness Talk that airs twice a week highlighting the same. Your salons focus a lot on being chemicalfree, what are some of the services that clients really stand to benefit in this? Most of us love straightening hair, colouring it or going for hair make-overs and these hair products are the ones in which most toxic chemicals are found. So over a long period, a lot of users go through hassles of hair loss, hair damage, breakage, severe skin irritation and in the longer run – more severe health hazards like cancer, asthma, allergies, alopecia, etc. At BNC, our products are 100 per cent free from toxic chemicals and safer for pregnant ladies, breastfeeding mothers and even kids. Our clients have seen good results and become loyal customers. What has been your biggest learning in the beauty industry? It’s a very vast industry with multiple segments, so every single day there’s something new happening and so something new to learn. I’m a true believer of keeping the skin healthy, breathing, clean and safe and this has been another of my learnings. There are innumerable products out there, but before we deposit it on our skin, we should know our skin well, listen to it and then decide what we need to use to enhance it. Awareness is always important. What would you say has been your key to success?

Never giving up, working hard, faith, loyalty, trust and persistence. Also its very important to keep learning and keep growing as it helps me stay one step ahead. Also passing on those learnings to my Team, as well as sharing the informative stuff through any media. As a well-known influencer, what’s your focus? INTERVIEW

I run away from cookie cutter roles YOU ARE IN A FILM WITH AJAY DEVGN AND AMITABH BACHCHAN. TELL US ABOUT IT? I have a background in theatre and TV and a film Badrinath ki Dulhaniya. I am grateful for this film because I have watched these two stalwarts on the big screen. Though I play Ajay sir’s wife in the film, with Amit jee I don’t have any scenes. But like a whole lot of us, I am enriched just watching him performing him on set. Working with him was on my bucket list and I have to pinch myself to see that this is coming true. We are in the same film but we haven’t exchanged dialogues. During the film shoot, I fractured my foot and my plaster had written a hashtag called tutti-frutti. My Bachchan is very observant and soon he was ragging me saying that tutti-frutti isn’t sharing her food with me, etc. I went home and told my husband about it and he said that he might actually like me. True to his words, the next day Mr Bachchan sent a buggy to my home to ride to work. He is extremely charming and caring.

Aakanksha Singh

AND YOU WROTE A POEM FOR HIM? On the last day of the shoot, I penned a poem for him. I went to his vanity van and told him that this is for you and please read it when you get time. He smiled and told me that “Accha likh leti ho. Kab se likh rahi ho?” (You write well. From when are you writing?). And I told him that I have been writing since childhood. This is what I wrote to him.

AND THEN YOU RECEIVED A LETTER FROM HIM? Yes, the very next day I was at home and I got a call from a local courier who had a parcel for me from Mr Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow. When I opened the envelope, he had penned a few lines for me. Prashansa ke patra aate rahenge (Letters with praises will keep coming) Pehle yeh karuna bhari bhet sweekar keejiye (Please accept my gift enveloped with kindness) IS AJAY DEVGN A TASKMASTER? It was an amazing experience working with Ajay sir after Mayday. His style of shooting is completely different. He uses 12 cameras and the effect is amazing. He is a thorough professional as an actor and director and producer. I play his wife in the film. DID YOU ALWAYS NURSE AN AMBITION TO BE AN ACTOR? I am from Jaipur and my mother Renu Seth has been a theatre actor. So, I nurtured a love for the stage from a young age. I loved dancing and writing though but one day my sister called me to play a part on stage and I fell in love with it. I enjoyed the process. But I grew up to be a physiotherapist though I could never practice it a single day of my life. One day my drama teacher called me to attend TV serial auditions that were happening there and I was skeptical. I thought nothing comes out of these things but I went for it and they liked me. He later contacted me and wanted to cast me. My exams were going on so I recorded the audition and sent it to him but got selected. My first TV show made me move to Mumbai and it ran for over a year and people started recognizing me. I played a widow at the age of 21 in that series and soon and predictably enough, I started

getting similar roles and I had to decline them. I would rather go back and do theatre back home than be stuck in typecast roles. But I did commercials and Badrinath ki Dulhaniya happened and some films from the South happened. HOW DID YOU MANAGE THE SOUTH INDIAN LANGUAGES? I have worked in Tamil Telugu and Kannada films. I follow Telugu better than the other languages and I find Tamil pretty tough. Also, I was doing bilinguals – so you speak the entire line in one language and the repeat it another. There was a process of learning and unlearning! WHAT ABOUT OTT? Yes. I am playing three different age groups in this series called Rang baaz 3. I play a 20-year old, then a 30-yearold and then a woman in her 50s. It is challenging for me and I look forward to do it. I always look at a role to see if I have scope to perform. I am really waiting for this anthology film under Nani’s production. It is called ‘Meet Cute’ – and is a role I haven’t played before. It is a Telugu web series written by his sister. YOU WERE IN DUBAI RECENTLY. WHAT DID YOU INDULGE IN? We went on a yacht, shopped, went sky diving and the works. I am not a freaky shopper, I am sensible shopper. Last December in Turkey I shopped a lot. I loved the Dubai Expo for its creativity, crazy crowds and the sheer will that it happened during a said pandemic. Also, the hotel at Al Barsha I was staying in, is the hotel I usually check into. So, there is a great feeling of nostalgia. WHAT ABOUT WRITING? I never plan. If you give me one word I can write a poem on it. In fact, the letter I wrote to Amitjee happened interestingly. I was asleep and dreamt that I was writing a letter to him. I woke up from my sleep and penned it, lest I forget. Sometimes if I am very lazy I will record my poem in my voice so that I can pick it up later. In fact, I have recently written and composed a song. WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ACTORS IN THE HINDI FILM INDUSTRY? Amit sir for his professionalism, the way he acts, delivers dialogues. You can see the same passion in his eyes for his work as actor. I love the work of Shabana Azmi jee, Tabu maam, and Alia Bhatt. May 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 35

INTERVIEW

Riding the wave! S Sonal Chauhan

onal Chauhan had a dream debut in Jannat as she became a star overnight with its

success. However, the actress chose to take a break to pursue her academics

till the camera beckoned her once again. And now

with several biggies in her kitty, the gorgeous star is back riding high. She was here in Dubai, shooting for her action thriller The Ghost with South superstar Nagarjuna, when I caught up with her on the sets. Donning a bullet-proof cop-jacket, Sonal steps into the vanity van looking every bit an action star, and while she digs into her fruit salad, we plunge into a candid conversation. Excerpts -Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

POST A RATHER IMPRESSIVE DEBUT YOU KEPT LOW FOR QUITE A WHILE BEFORE COMING BACK WITH A BANG AGAIN… I was very young and came from a background with no connection to films at all. In fact, I had never even planned to be an actress, but then Jannat came my way and it just clicked. It became a huge hit, but neither me, nor my parents understood what it meant to have such a huge hit. And it wasn’t just a hit. I was loved and accepted, everywhere I went, I was called the ‘national crush’ and all that was overwhelming! But then my parents wanted me to study more. I didn’t know better and went back to studying. I realized I loved acting more than what I was pursuing, so I came back. But I’m very bad at asking for work and didn’t network. So I let movies find me instead and for me it didn’t matter that the films were in South as they were good roles and scripts.

I REMEMBER MEETING YOU POST JANNAT AND RECALL HOW UNFAZED YOU WERE ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF THE FILM Yes, I know. I didn’t enjoy my success. I actually didn’t fathom how huge a deal it was and didn’t realize the enormity of it all. IN SOUTH, ONE GOOD FILM LEADS TO ANOTHER FAR QUICKLY THAN IT DOES IN BOLLYWOOD? Yes, it’s simpler there in terms of this. If you are a part of a good film, working with good people and it does well, you get more work more organically.

heroes, but our own women super-heroes. WHAT ARE THE OTHER PROJECTS COMING UP? Some very exciting work! There is Adipurush that I’m very excited about, then I’m making my OTT debut with a webseries and really looking forward to that. And there are some more big projects that will be announced soon. ARE YOU BETTER PREPARED THIS TIME AROUND? Yes, definitely! We learn from our mistakes. So have I. So if something like Jannat happens to me now, Inshallah, 100 per cent I would try to take all the right steps in the right direction and not hold it all back. ARE YOU VERY ROMANTIC AT HEART? Yes, I am a hopeless romantic. In fact, I’m all about love and I think I am born for love. I am that romantic. I just think it’s the most beautiful thing in the world and a human being is the happiest and nicest when they are in love. It’s a beautiful feeling and not just romantically. The love that you have for your parents or your friends. You are just happy. It brings out the best in you.

I feel we need to have not just women action heroes, but our own women super-heroes! DO YOU THINK YOUR JOURNEY WOULD’VE BEEN DIFFERENT IF YOU HAD A MENTOR? Absolutely 100 per cent! Having someone to guide you, would have definitely made things better. But I am very proud of how I turned out as a human being and every experience has shaped me into who I am. Sometimes I think about it and I’m like, maybe I would have turned out to be something else. But I think whatever happens, happens for the best. IS THERE A SPECIFIC GENRE OR ROLE THAT YOU WANT TO EXPLORE? So many. I’m greedy when it comes to roles and genres. But I would really love to do a period film. Action was another genre I wanted to explore, which I am now doing with The Ghost and I just love it. I had wanted to do it since a long time.

SO ARE YOU DATING ANYONE? No, I am single. My expectations are such, I’m also a little old school when it comes to being in a relationship. I like to be romanced in an old school way. Romance is one part of it and there should be an intensity, a passion. I don’t like anything mediocre. That’s why I am single. Of course there are people but I haven’t found the person who can love the way I love. IF YOU WERE DATING SOMEONE, WOULD IT BE ON THE SOCIAL MEDIA? I don’t know I’m not dating anyone. But I think if I am with somebody or if I am in love I would never want to hide it. That would be disrespect. Unless he wants it like that and if he has a good reason. I am a romantic and I would want to shout it from the rooftop. I just think that love is so beautiful that you need to share it and tell it to the world. How is it wrong? TELL US ABOUT YOUR LOVE FOR DUBAI! Dubai is a home away from home. I love the vibe and it’s very fascinating seeing how the city has developed. It’s like if one has the will, one has the way. Nag Sir and I were discussing this. I always look forward to coming to Dubai. The shopping, the food, the people… amazing. The kind of love that we get here from across nationalities is heartwarming.

AND YOU’RE STARRING WITH NAGARJUNA. HOW’S IT BEEN WORKING WITH HIM? When I sit with him I feel like I am with someone my age, like a friend. He is super intelligent, an all-rounder when it comes to genres and so charming. I have been told that we look good together on camera, so touchwood (laughs). THIS ACTION ROLE SEEMS TO BE TAILOR-MADE FOR YOU AND YOU’RE CARRYING IT OFF WITH SO MUCH CONFIDENCE AND POISE! This means a lot because it was very important that physically the actress look convincing and that was what the director’s priority was when it came to casting too. And of course there was a lot of hard work too, there was action training, weapons training and I even fractured my toe. People give their sweat and blood, I have given my bone as well (laughs). On a serious note, it is a really special film. As much as I wanted to do an action film, I was initially skeptical if I would be able to pull it off, as there aren’t many action roles for women, in Bollywood or South. But I think there is so much scope. And now all the actresses are so fit and active, so I feel we need to have not just women action May 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 37

INTERVIEW

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE AN ACTOR AND WHAT HAS YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING AN ESTABLISHED NAME IN THE INDUSTRY BEEN LIKE? Growing up, several things interested me and my parents always encouraged me to explore them. I always felt that I had a performer’s instinct. I was very comfortable in front of the audience, on stage, and on camera. It was only much later in college when I started learning Kathak and when I was assisting and making short films and documentaries that I found myself being drawn towards the process of filmmaking and acting. I am glad that my love for acting came out so organically, and not just because my parents were already in the industry.

SUCCESS! OTT STAR SHRIYA PILGAONKAR HAS BEEN MAKING HER MARK IN THE DIGITAL SPACE WITH ONE SUCCESSFUL SERIES AFTER ANOTHER. AND NOW SHE’S EARNING PRAISE FOR HER STRONG GRASP OF CHARACTER IN THE RECENT RELEASE GUILTY MINDS. WE RECENTLY CAUGHT UP WITH THE ACTRESS AND IN AN EXCLUSIVE CHAT WITH AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE, SHRIYA TALKS ABOUT HER ORGANIC CALL TO ACTING AND NOT LETTING CREATIVITY BEING DEFINED BY THE SCREEN SIZE

MOST RECENTLY, YOU HAVE BEEN GARNERING MUCH APPRECIATION FOR YOUR LATEST SERIES - GUILTY MINDS ON AMAZON PRIME - HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? Gautam Krishan Chandani (renowned casting director) asked me if I would like to audition and I agreed. I remember reading the three scenes sent to me and all of them had an emotional touch that made me realise that the script is interesting and once I got the part I was ecstatic. I feel like the part chose me, the role of Kashaf Quaze chose me and I couldn’t be happier. TELL US MORE ABOUT IT! I was instantly drawn to her the first time I read the name Kashaf Quaze and I wanted to know her more. Guilty Minds is a courtroom drama and I personally love courtroom dramas so for me a script like this is very exciting, especially when my director Shefali Bhushan has an intimate understanding of lawyers since she comes from a family of lawyers and is very well-versed with this universe. I feel like our show has an authentic and realistic approach to the world of lawyers. What I love about Kashaf Quaze is that she is very strong in court, passionate, and takes the cases she believes in and her sense of right and wrong is really strong. At the same time, outside the court, she is a private person and someone who shows concern for her deepest fear. There’s an interesting story, her equation with college friend

29/04/2022 9:29 PM

Deepak (Varun Mitra), has an interesting tension. The show explores not just different cases, but also the depiction of interpersonal relationships is handled delicately. I have been able to carry a project on my shoulders which is why it is so special to me. WHAT ARE THE KIND OF PROJECTS THAT INTEREST YOU AS AN ACTOR? I’m at a stage wherein I want to prove that I am a versatile actor and every decision I make is based on being part of an interesting script. I don’t ever want to play a part that doesn’t make an impact, so no matter what I do it has to be impactful and make people move. Till now I have tried genres such as the crime thriller Mirzapur and Murder in Agonda which is a quirky murder mystery. This year, there’s going to be a bunch of projects and I feel like I have not gotten a chance to play a light part and something largerthan-life or a masala film in which I can dance. There is no strategy in my mind right now, but I’m hungry to work with directors who want to creatively challenge themselves and as an actor, I want to explore creative things. HAS THERE BEEN ANY ROLE THAT YOU’D SAY HAS BEEN THE CLOSEST TO THE REAL YOU? I feel like every time one is developing any character, one needs to add their personal experience to it. I feel like there are bits and pieces of me in many characters I’ve essayed. For example, Kashaf is very protective of her family and friends while there’s a difference that I am much more expressive than Kashaf. What Sweety Gupta in Mirzapur and I have in common is that we are unafraid. In Murder in Agonda, Sarala and I have very curious minds so there’s something or the other that is perhaps the same. AND WHICH ROLES HAVE BEEN THE MOST

CHALLENGING? Kashaf Quaze. I think I had that much time and involvement in the project through which I could explore the emotions and layers of the character. For every character that I am playing, I want to get into their skin. However, one doesn’t always get scripts where one can show the graphs. So Guilty Minds is very important to me because I have been able to explore and experience it. I depended a lot on my director (Shefali) and surrendered to her vision. At the same time, I had to trust my instincts. It is difficult to portray something that you’ve never lived. The challenge is always to do it effortlessly and make it look easy even if it’s hard. HAVING SUCH RENOWNED ACTORS AS PARENTS (ACTOR-FILMMAKER SACHIN PILGAONKAR AND ACTRESS SUPRIYA PILGAONKAR), IS THERE PRESSURE, SUPPORT OR BOTH? IS THE TABLE TALK ABOUT CINEMA AND DO THEY GUIDE YOU IN CHOOSING THEM? The conversation I have with my parents encompasses everything under the sun and I am blessed to be born into a family of artistes. I respect them not just as my parents but as artistes. They’ve brought me up in a way that I am confident in my decisions and I take responsibility for them. When I discuss something with them, they won’t tell me what to do but will help me resolve it. More than career decisions they want me to be happy, not just as an actor, but also be emotionally strong as an individual. I always go to my father when I get to the dialect of any character and look at my mother for the body language. WHAT IS THE ONE ADVICE YOU HOLD MOST DEAR? No work is too big or too small. Everything that I do needs to be given importance. Also, I think enjoying the journey is more

important than stressing on the outcome as the industry is uncertain. Every project has its destiny. YOU HAVE A FULL SLATE AHEAD, TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS This is an exciting year for me and I have different genres coming up. I have Crackdown Season 2, which is an action series and The Gone Game Season 2, there’s also a comic project coming up and a potential film in the pipeline. YOU HAVE DIRECTED SHORT FILMS AS WELL. IS THAT SOMETHING YOU WANT TO

TAKE ON TO THE NEXT LEVEL? I love the process of filmmaking and I will definitely take it ahead. I am inspired by my father who is not just an actor but a director and so many other actresses are also doing it, but right now I am focusing on acting and my process of learning hasn’t stopped and it is important to take control over the narrative. I would like to explore it when I feel like I am ready and experienced to take it on. THEATRE, MOVIES OR OTT, WHAT INTERESTS YOU THE MOST? All three are fun and creative. I owe a lot to all the three mediums so picking one is impossible. I started my career with theatre, OTT has been a game-changer for me and the magic of cinema is irreplaceable.

…ENJOYING THE JOURNEY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN STRESSING ON THE OUTCOME AS THE INDUSTRY IS UNCERTAIN. EVERY PROJECT HAS ITS DESTINY!

INTERVIEW

We are excited to see our relationship with Bollywood grow Majed Al Suwaidi

Majed Al Suwaidi – Managing Director, Dubai Media City, Dubai Studio City and Dubai Production City speaks to Manju Ramanan on his plans for 2022 and ahead! In terms of media production at the Media Cluster, are there any new initiatives to attract businesses to come to Dubai to use the facilities? More so than focusing on short-term initiatives, we focus our efforts on adapting our offerings to the needs of creatives, whether you are working on a feature film or a collection of freelancers building their portfolio. That’s our strength – for over 20 years, we have built a uniquely flexible and integrated ecosystem which includes leading media and content companies and talent in Dubai Media City, state-of-the-art soundstages and facilities at Dubai Studio City and a complete production environment at Dubai Production City. We even have a skilled force of freelancers through our GoFreelance service who can provide short-term services on projects, as well as media-focused start-ups at the in5 Media enabling platform, which aims to incubate, train and mentor aspiring entrepreneurs with access to industry-standard creative facilities including green screen studios, editing rooms, voice recording rooms and more, which are available for short-term use for freelancers and production studios at competitive prices. We also maintain close ties with regulatory bodies such as the Dubai Film and TV Commission (DFTC), who are responsible for overseeing filming and approving permits – something they can do in a day if needed! Knowing that you can find such comprehensive resources takes a lot of stress out of the production process. And because we have such an end-to-end media ecosystem, we can offer businesses competitive and cost-effective solutions. All this is to ensure that creative producers have access to all the necessary framework to execute best in class projects and attract new talent to boost the Dubai’s creative economy. How has the post pandemic situation been for business at the media cluster? The post-pandemic climate in Dubai has been quite promising 40 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST May 2022

40-41 -FFME- MAY 2022-MAJID.indd 40

29/04/2022 9:26 PM

for the media cluster. The government swung into action with robust social distancing measures and a complete vaccination programme which enabled Dubai to open borders faster than other markets around the world. Even our media production companies were able to return to on-the-ground projects, with DFTC ensuring that all COVID protocols were followed for the health and safety of the staff. The advent of Expo 2020 Dubai provided a valuable boost to the media landscape. The pandemic also accelerated the adoption of a lot of new media consumption habits that we feel will steadily impact the media cluster. Digital streaming and subscription video-ondemand through OTT providers went up significantly during the pandemic – one of our own business partners, STARZPLAY, recorded a 141% increase of unique users from 2019 and has since then sustained that growth. The incredible success of streaming platforms is driving up a demand for more and original content, which is sure to impact film and TV production across the board. Do you see the Dubai Expo propel business back to Dubai? Expo 2020 Dubai has strengthened the emirate’s position as a regional and global hub for media, content creators and influencers. Many institutions, media platforms and production companies have been able to boost their local presence in preparation for the event, as well as throughout it. Even our media ecosystems witnessed a surge in media activity and demand for some special facilities and equipment, including production studios for roundthe-clock coverage. After the challenges of COVID-19, Expo 2020 motivated the gamut of all media platforms and institutions, large and emerging production companies and independent creators to get back into action and provided opportunities to develop unique global content. What is the calendar of events planned and what do you expect out of them? We have a year-long calendar of activities geared towards spotlighting the incredible creative talent across our communities – and considering we have well over 34,000 professionals in our media ecosystems, there is plenty to show! We are set to carry on our key initiatives including “Reel Talks,” which are live interactive sessions with leading regional industry figures, DMC Amplify, a live show which aims to promote local artists, and Behind the Music which aims to empower and inspire aspiring songwriters by sharing their journey to success in a competitive entertainment industry. People in the film and content creation should stay on the lookout for other activities and workshops part of our “CineMENA” initiative, which

we host in partnership with our enabling platform, in5 Media, to nurture homegrown creative talent and encourage more production of locally sourced content. In addition to those, we’ll be hosting a number of flagship industry events to engage our community and connect them with peers around the world. What we expect from these events is to provide our brilliant, creative figures, established and emerging alike, a platform to showcase their work, share their experiences and collaborate. What are the newer venues you are promoting at the Media Cluster? Few venues beat our sound stages at Dubai Studio City. They are the biggest sound stages in the MENA region at 50,000sqft, and comprise boutique studios, workshops and a five-meter-deep water tank studio. You can transform the entire space into a custom-made set – which was done for “Star Trek Beyond” – or we can divide it in half for smaller productions. Even freelancers are welcome to rent rooms for shortterm projects at competitive prices. It is also readily equipped with green screen components so you can recreate any setting you want within a controlled environment. Other than that, DFTC also offers a digital platform to scope out various locations across the city. Dubai is home to such a plethora of iconic tourism destinations, natural landscapes and more, so you’ll surely find something that caters to your imagination. How do you plan to attract Bollywood to Dubai? Our proximity to India, complete media ecosystem and on-ground support already make us an extremely popular destination for Indian cinema. Dubai is a convenient choice – and it is costeffective compared to other parts of the world, so directors and producers can focus on creating outstanding works. The UAE and India have enjoyed a long-standing

relationship marked by decades of cultural and economic trade – and many major Bollywood movies have also been filmed here, including ‘Khiladi’, ‘Laxmi Bomb’, ‘Chor Nikal Ke Bhaaga’ and many more. In fact, last year, in5 Media was transformed to serve as a key location for a blockbuster starring Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu. During the two-day shoot, the actor was seen shooting at various in 5 facilities for his movie. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and the UAE will further enrich that relationship and intensify bilateral engagement in diverse areas. We’re excited to see our relationship with Bollywood grow in kind. How do you see more investments and talent migration coming to Dubai post the UAE 10 year visa? This new initiative will enrich our creative sectors by attracting and retaining more skilled talent to choose Dubai as their place to live, work and develop original content. Dubai has thriving media, arts and culture industries, and the Golden Visa allows us to sustain that momentum. The city already offers world-class infrastructure and a comprehensive business ecosystem with our media clusters at the heart of it, which even includes support for start-ups through in 5 Media. With all this framework in place, the Golden Visa is the next step for Dubai to achieve its vision of becoming the world’s Creative Economic Capital. More talent and companies setting up in Dubai fertilizes the scope of opportunities available regionally. We will surely see more ambitious projects play out on a larger scale, attracting more creative figures to seek out a place within it to grow and succeed, as well as investors who see the incredible promise and wealth of talent available in our emirate. INTERVIEW

WHAT BRINGS YOU TO DUBAI? In 2019 I came to ride a cycling race in Dubai. The love for cycling and sports attracted me to Dubai and my two daughters love the place too. Cycling tracks here are amazing and I am keen to spread the love of spot cycling in the Arab world. I am keen that my children will blossom into sports people in this country. I have had the honour of receiving the UAE’s Golden Visa.

They stand by him and support him and he has motivated several towards their weight loss journeys. Sports and fitness instructor Baqar Nasser who is Dubai based now, shares his amazing story of struggle against all odds, losing his mother and staying undeterred under all circumstances while pushing forth his mission to spread fitness awareness across the globe. Manju Ramanan

TELL US ABOUT YOUR GROWING UP YEARS? I am originally from Mumbai. My dad’s family is 5th generation Indians from Zanzibar in Tanzania and my mom was Bahraini. I grew up in Dongri in Mumbai, that is notorious for being the breeding ground of some infamous underworld dons. But my family supported my brother and me in our love for cycling as a sport and we made a name for ourselves, bringing glory to the family.

SO, YOU DIDN’T REALLY LIKE CYCLING? No, I didn’t. At 5 years of age, I completed a 30-40 kms race. I never liked it since, during the rainy season, the entire body got wet while cycling but the helmet kept the face dry. I didn’t like that inconvenience. When I was 8 years old, my father suffered a massive loss in his auto spare parts business and suffered a paralytic attack. At the age of 9 years, I was representing Maharashtra for cycling. I was winning but hating the sport. When I was 11, at NSCI, my brother who was a cycling champion, was taking part in a cycling competition met with a massive accident. YOUR LIFE STORY SEEMS TO BE OUT OF A HINDI FILM? If you have watched the hit Hindi film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, that is my life story. The film talks of two brothers with an age gap between them. The older one is a cycling champion but is grievously injured during a cycling match mishap and is rendered incapable of any sport. But he trains his happy-go-lucky younger brother to take up the sport and be the winning champion. My brother was that champion and a national level bronze level cyclist for 200 meters. But a crucial race happened in Mumbai where my champion brother Habib Nasser with another rider was riding towards the finishing line at 60 kms per hour when two riders clashed. While the other rider fell into the grass and had a fracture, my brother was hurled towards the wall and his helmet buckled open and his head went and banged against the bank with a crash. Blood oozed out of his ears, nose and mouth and he fell unconscious. I remember him being dragged into an ambulance and after being rejected by 7 hospitals. A government hospital took him in and he had a clot in his brain. He survived the ordeal but forgot how

to walk, a condition he slowly overcame because he is an ardent sportsperson. I was watching all this helplessly. My brother was my hero and he was in this condition. He would walk around like a robot and it took him two years to recover and he started training again. He even got selected for an international race and came 6th. He didn’t get the gold medal for India. DID YOUR BROTHER’S INJURY MAKE YOU A SERIOUS SPORTSMAN? Yes, it did. He encouraged me to take it seriously. I was 11 years old and I became a state champion winning all gold medals and representing my state at the nationals. This continued when I was 14, 15 and 16 years of age. Around that time, I had a small accident and the under 18 Nationals were happening. The rider who represented the state got fever and had to pull out and my brother requested my coach to put me there. I was underage but I was allowed to take part and came third with a bronze medal. It was in news everywhere that the under 16 sportsman won the race for under 18. I started winning many awards after that at several competitions. My school started getting known and I was excused from many classes because I was the sports hero. Thrice I became the inter-state champion. YOU STARTED WORKING WHILE YOU WERE IN COLLEGE? Yes, we were not from an affluent background. At 18, I joined the Indian railways and was positioned at the purchase department. I would bike in the morning, go to lectures at HR College at 7 am. attend college and run to the VT office of the Indian Railways at 11 am, sign the muster and be there for 4 hours. My job was to do odd jobs and take print outs for the bigger bosses. We had dot matrix printers around that time that used to take a long time to process. I found easier ways out to use the jet laser printer and worked smart to complete my tasks. One day, Indu Shahani who used to be my teacher saw me cycling in the morning hours where I was chasing her car. In an hour, I was attending her class at 7 am. She was shocked and announced this to the whole class. She eventually became the sheriff of Mumbai. YOU WERE INTO FASHION AS WELL? Yes, in college, due to my physique, I was part of fashion shows. Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh and I grew thick and both of us used to take part in college ramp walks and won many awards for our college. While in college, a friend of mine took me to Exert gym, one of the most expensive gyms in Mumbai. I met the late Kaizad Kapadia there who went on to start the K 11 Academy. He told me that since I was a national champion, I would work out there for free. That is when I started my tryst with spin bikes – stationary bikes at the gym. From not knowing how to operate a CD player, I became a star trainer at the gym with maximum clients coming to my sessions. With a railways job and college, I was now earning extra bucks training people thrice a week. I could soon afford a fancy bike to go to college. I earned every bit of the lifestyle I was funding for myself. DOES FAILURE HELP YOU DISCOVER ANOTHER ROUTE TO SUCCESS? I represented India at the Colordo 20 Mountain Goat. For the first time ever, I was on a plane – it was a double decker flight and I was wearing the Indian sportsman blazer with the national emblem. I fared miserably in the race and the decided to diversify into something else. I wanted to study it now. I went to New York and enrolled in Shwin, an indoor cycling course and did well in it. I got a job in New York for 20 dollars a month and there my classes became so successful that I started earning 60 dollars an hour. That is when it struck me that I wanted to own a business, not be employed in one. HOW DID YOU START YOUR OWN VENTURE? I came back to India and was planning to place an order of 100 bikes to start an indoor cycling space when Proline

approached me and told me that they would invest in my concept wherein I become their partner and a brand ambassador for Top Spin. We opened in Delhi and eventually in other places and my life changed. Some of the people I worked for in Exert gym became my employees. Soon, when Top Spin was sold, I bought it and made it my own. I had autographed bikes, sipper bottles and other merchandise that I created. And then the recession hit us. Around that time, I got married to a simple girl who my sister met at a mosque. Her father was keen that I move away from Dongri, so we moved to Bombay Central with my mom and my two girls were born. A lot of stars became my clients and friends and my work started getting recognized. I trained Sanjay Dutt since Suneil Shetty called me for it. I went to him with a doctor and checked him – don’t touch him, he has sciatica. But I could train him through seated cycling, walk etc. I trained him in 40 days,he was 14 kilos down and he signed a movie Blue. I was there for his wedding. Then Akshaye Khanna, Vinod Khanna jee, Anil Kapoor, Amisha Patel, Sonam Kapoor etc. HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO MOVE TO DUBAI? My mom passed away during the pandemic and I was down in the dumps for a month after she died. I gave away all my bikes at the gym and started online classes. We made more money in three months than I would do at my studio. Since Dubai has a good sports culture, I decided to move here. My wife who is a physiotherapist has a close relative here Atul Mittal. At one time, he was paralyzed and she cured him. I later worked on him and today he is an avid triathlon participant and cycles regularly. He is quite an inspiration. We also did an event together called 50:50:50 where we raised money for a kid’s operation. Each person donated a few hours towards fitness and that would be borne by a sponsor for charity. I am in Dubai now and I am keen to spread this awareness of sports here. My children are 9 and 5 years old and my older daughter has four pack abs already. The girls eat clean and I am keen they will grow up to be known sports people in the region.

aheer Iqbal has just been

honoured with the Golden Visa when we catch up with the young actor in Dubai. The city is his

second home, he tells us over a cup of hot coffee! Zaheer’s screen debut, The Notebook

Zaheer Iqbal

did not have a dream run at the Box Office inspite of being much appreciated across, but the actor’s clearly taken it all in his stride. He’s now awaiting the release of his next film,

Double XL with Sonakshi Sinha. Brimming with a self-assured confidence, he’s excited about his platter being full of exciting films including one with his mentor Salman Khan. In a candid chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the young actor talks all about it and confesses why he’d prefer being a saleable star than just be known for his acting chops. Zaheer also spills the beans on his rumoured relationship with Sonakshi Sinha and reveals the life lessons he’s learnt from the Bollywood superstar

Salman Khan

YOU AND DUBAI GO BACK A LONG WAY, SO CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR GOLDEN VISA. Yes, thank you. I love Dubai. I used to live here in 2009 and I still come here very often. I have lots of family and friends here. So I am really happy, as I have been honored with the Golden Visa. It’s a very big deal for me, as Dubai’s like my second home. They have put everything that you look forward to in your travels in one place. There’s best of food, there’s snow, desert, beach... It’s like a genie, say what you want and it has it. I also love the fact that it’s filled with expats and it’s so multicultural. In fact, the module of Dubai is very similar to mine, just be happy (laughs). I anyway come to Dubai often, and now I will even more… Hopefully buy a house here and stay for longer periods of time. I hope I shoot here very soon. INSPITE OF BEING MUCH-APPRECIATED, YOUR DEBUT FILM, THE NOTEBOOK DIDN’T SET THE BOX OFFICE ON FIRE. WHAT WAS YOUR TAKEAWAY FROM THE EXPERIENCE? Nitin (Kakkar) is a fantastic director and the amount I have learnt from him I don’t think I will ever learn so much in one film. The passion with which he taught me was the same passion with which I wanted to learn. So I would say I was very lucky to have that experience no matter how the film fared. Every film has its fate and its best to accept it, learn and move ahead rather than indulge in a blame-game. Also, like you said, the film was much appreciated. So I’m really happy about that.

WHAT’S YOUR PROCESS OF CHOOSING A FILM LIKE? I don’t have a game plan, because it doesn’t work like that. I’m just trying to do good work. I try my best, hope and pray every night that the films that come to me are different and versatile and luckily that’s what’s happening. My second film Double XL is completely different from my first, my third is even more different. And my fourth is also very different. So touchwood till now it’s going great and all I want is to do different kind of work. I don’t like monotony in anything. IS THERE A GENRE YOU ARE MORE KEEN ON? I’m comfortable in all. But big, commercial action films are what I get drawn to most naturally. Because that’s what I like to watch too. I’d prefer a wholesome entertaining film, over a slow film where the director is trying to flaunt his skills and everyone is trying to show off and call it art. So I really want to be a part of entertaining cinema, OTT… If you tell me to perform here on the road I will perform. I don’t care where it’s being showcased. I just enjoy the process and work. CONSIDERING YOU HAVE THE PHYSIQUE TO PULL OFF ACTION EASILY, DO YOU SUGGEST FILMMAKERS, “THODA AUR ACTION DAAL DO”? No, I don’t overstep my boundary ever. I may suggest depending on my equation with the director, but I will never say it on my own unless asked. WHAT KIND OF AN ACTOR ARE YOU IN TERMS OF PREPPING FOR A ROLE? I am still figuring it out. I worked with Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi in Double XL and I was amazed with their spontaneity. They know the right amount of preparation. So I’m trying to find the sweet spot. Of being prepared, but not too prepared.

movies, whether your acting is 3/10 or 10/10. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR LOVE LIFE. People speculate, but they don’t know anything and I am going to keep it that way (laughs). THERE ARE TALKS ABOUT YOU AND SONAKSHI SINHA? I really have a good laugh about it. All I’ll say is, she is my best friend, and we are genuinely close friends… Me, Saqib (Saleem), Huma (Qureshi) and Sonakshi. We are on each other’s speed dial! So we hang out together, go for dinners… don’t best friends do that? We have even done a movie together, so that has got us even closer. She is such a phenomenal actor, so I got such a good opportunity to learn from her and even Huma. So that’s about my friendship life. My love life, they still don’t know!

WHAT IS SUCCESS TO YOU? Happiness. The day I feel I am chasing success, but I am unhappy even for a moment I will stop chasing it. As long as I am happy chasing success I will enjoy it. I enjoy the process. It’s not very hard to be happy. Happiness for me are my friends, my family, my people around me... Success is my passion, not my goal. It gives me a kick that’s it. WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU HAVE LEARNT FROM SALMAN KHAN? I have learnt to be calm from him. I have seen him during his ups and lows. He doesn’t get too happy with success or sad with failure! You can see him on his best and worst days and cannot tell which is which. And this he has taught me by not telling, but by showing. That’s something I’m learning by just watching him. He has made peace with the fact that he is going to be judged, spoken about, good, bad, ugly and that’s okay. In the industry we are in, it’s easy to be affected by everything. And I’m as a person very hyper, so I hope to find his level of calmness. SO AT WHAT POINT WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOU HAVE REALLY MADE IT? When I am a sale-able star! At the end of the day it’s all about the numbers and box office. Critics ke bolne se mujhe films nahi milti. Critics praised my performance in my first film, but did I get a film after that even for a long time? So this is also I have learnt that if you give a box office hit you will get

This vegetarian restaurant is buzzing even on weekdays, and it clearly seems to be a local favourite, as we saw several customers place their orders even without referring the menu. But we did check it out and were amazed with the huge variety of the desi street food they offer. From starters to the main course and desserts, if authentic Indian flavours are on your mind, then this is the place to head to. Also try their wide variety of the freshest and yummiest desserts and mithais. From Agra pethas to Bengali Sandesh, and Malpuas to the Rabdi Matka Kulfi, they also have their own innovations with the current seasonal fruit – Mango! 46 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST May 2022

Food It was almost like being back in India with the dishes we had at Desilicious. The starters blended beautifully into the main course as one dish followed another and each with a unique burst of flavours. We kickstarted with the chaats and tried the mouthwatering Mumbai Dahi Batata Puri and also their famous Mumbai Veg Grill Sandwich that’s served with the chutneys and French Fries. What we’d really recommend is their Jinny Dosa that came up next. Try it with the coconut chutney or the garlic one and the sambhar. Next on our table was the Chole Bhature, and the Cheese Pav Bhaji, which were both cooked to perfection! From their Indo-Chinese dishes we went for the Crispy Spinach and Paneer, again a musttry. They also offer a variety of thirst quenchers. We opted for the chaas and water melon juice and rounded the meal with a cup of hot chai! The desserts we just couldn’t get enough of and these are the ones we’d highly recommend. We could see patrons buying sweets off the counter as take-aways too. We tried their mango speciality – Mango Delight that has Rasgulla in fresh mango puree. This is an absolute must-have. Then there was the Kheer Kadam, Gulab Patti Sandesh, Santra Sandwich, Ras malai, Malai Sandwich, and Sugar Free Pineapple Alaska which is fresh malai (cream), with pineapple and topped with almonds. We also had their pethas. All are prepared with the freshest of ingredients and in their sweet shop itself, they inform us. This one is certainly recommended for the sweet cravings. No wonder, almost all customers are seen leaving with sweets take-aways, us included! The restaurant scores extra brownie points for the presentation of the food. All dishes are beautifully garnished and well presented. The ingredients are fresh and though spices are mild, there is no compromise on the flavours. Ambience Well-lit and spacious, the restaurant seemed to be quite a hit with families. The place is vibrant and is buzzing all through the day. The restaurant’s location makes it a good option too. Service The staff is courteous and friendly. The service is prompt and serving time is quick. They very patiently explained the difference between the many sweets we asked about while choosing and answered all our queries with a great pride and delight. We like their spunk! Winning laurels Dubai’s home-grown brand, Desilicious, which is the newly rebranded avatar of Shree Gangour Sweets, has also won the coveted ‘Most Innovative Brand of UAE’ award at the AsiaOne Media’s 17th edition of Asia-Europe Business and Social Forum 2022, held at London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square for the innovation and change it has done while rebranding itself. Naresh Gurnani, owner of Shree Gangour Group UAE, says, “Known for our authentic range of Indian food products. All our products are made under the strict supervision of experienced chefs using the finest ingredients. We want our customers to get the real taste of India and we ensure that there is no compromise when it comes to quality and taste.” Verdict For a fun lunch with friends or dining out with family, the place is a definite must-try. The sweets are highly recommended especially if you have a sweet tooth.

INTERVIEW

Music beyond all heights

DJ Shadow When was the first time you got amazed by music? I think music has been running in my blood since my childhood. I remember as a child, I used to dance to music whenever and where ever I was. The first time I knew that I want to be a DJ was after attending the first live DJ performance, and how the DJ had a complete control on the crowd just through the music that he played. That amazed me and I wanted to do that too. What’s Dubai’s choice of music? Dubai being the center of the world, has a mix of music from the east and the west. It has the best amalgamation of different cultures. Dubai has different nationalities and numerous cuisines, which makes Dubai a one stop destination to know more about the whole world. This influences me as a DJ, because I mix eastern and western music and I credit this to Dubai. we see artists from all over the world come and perform in Dubai, which paved the way for me to collaborate with celebrities from different industries. What is your favorite type of music? I listen to different types of music. Being a music producer, I believe that you should always know all types of melodies. Techno music is the most happening, so in many events, I’ve played Techno music. Bollywood music is what made me, it’s part of my life. It will always be there. You’ve worked with many celebrities, with

He is a multi-award-winning Bollywood DJ. He worked with Pitbull, Sean Paul, Guru Randhawa, Badshah, Bohemia and more. He wanted to be an astronaut, but his fear of heights made him choose different kind of heights. Hanan Yehia Mulazem in a heady conversation with DJ Shadow whom you’ve enjoyed working with the most? Yes, I have worked with many celebrities, but the two names that are popping on top of my head are SRK and Pitbull. I worked with Shah Rukh Khan for his private party in Dubai. He is one the humblest celebrities that I have ever met. At the end of the show, he came to me and said that he enjoyed the show a lot. It’s no doubt one of the most inspirational moments in my life. the energy that Pitbull had at the studio and the set was unbelievable. After we were done with the shooting, he came and thanked me for making him part of my song. Where it was absolute pleasure to have him. They both made me understand how important is be humble in order to

reach that high level of success. What is the defining element that each DJ mush have? There are loads of elements that make a DJ popular and successful. But, the main thing is to understand the audience. Even a robot can mix songs, but the key is the ability to know what the crowd really wants, and how prepared the DJ is to different crowds and how to relate to them. This what separates a good DJ from a great DJ. Besides that, you must have your basics and foundations right. You’ve chosen “DJ Shadow” as a name, Why “Shadow”, particularly? I chose the name “Shadow” quite early in my career. I was shy when I was in school. Shadow represents this side of me, and being on stage, the crazy side of me is like going out from the shadow. Mixing Arabic and English music has been trending a lot, but, would you mix Bollywood and Arabic music? Arabic music is trending worldwide. Mixing Arabic and Bollywood songs is definitely my next thing to do in my agenda. I would really love to collaborate with Sa’ad Lamjarred. If you weren’t a DJ, what do you see yourself doing? As a kid, I always wanted to be an astronaut, but then I have realized that I get scared of heights. Jokes aside, if I weren’t a DJ I would be a magician on a stage, where I can interact with the crowd. Sounds fun?
