What a Night it Was!

A

million selfies will not suffice when it comes to memories of the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night. A night of celebration, a night of abandon, a night of glamour, talent, performances and shows. Several episodes followed the main narrative in this case but didn’t stop the momentum on D Day. A day before the event, Mr Prem Chopra who won the Lifetime Achievement (Male) slipped in the restaurant and had to be rushed to hospital. Despite fractures to his fingers and his arm on a sling, he walked up onstage the following day with Rohit Roy, to receive his felicitation amidst a standing ovation. Music composer and singer Amaal Mallik slipped during rehearsals and had multiple fractures but performed despite the pain and inconvenience. We at Filmfare Middle East are very grateful to all the stars, actors and performers who were part of our event and made it a grand success despite the grave covid situation. An event hosted by the franchise owner of Filmfare Middle East, Mr Rizwan Sajan, Founder and Chairman of the Danube Group. On our cover is the superstar of the Arab world, Egyptian Rockstar Mohammed Ramadan with Bollywood actor and beauty queen Urvashi Rautela. Urvashi Rautela, who joined him onstage for their common song Versace Baby added oomph and power to the night. The November edition’s cover was unveiled at the event as well! The Stars Shine Down!

tunning, Spectacular and Sizzling! The Milano Presents Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night Powered by The Dua Group was all this and more. A night to remember when the stars shone down, where talent, glitz, glamour walked hand-inhand down the red carpet, a night that saw global entertainers set the stage on fire and most of all a night that celebrated Achievers. Legends and stars from Bollywood, OTT, Southern cinema, Pakistani and the Arab world, all under one sky, this much-awaited event was one extravagant treat for fans. Kajol, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Buthaina Al Raisi, Mahira Khan, Maya Ali, Manish Malhotra, Jaideep Ahlawat, Sunil Grover… the list was a long one topped by Legends of Indian cinema - Prem Chopra, Zeenat Aman… Star entertainers – Mohamed Ramadan, Nora Fatehi, Kanika Kapoor, Sunny Leone, Sattar Saad, Tulsi Kumar, Daisy Shah, Amaal Mallik, Udit Narayan, Urvashi Rautela all set the temperatures soaring with their mind-blowing performances! Turn the pages for more… Personally, guys, it was my first FFME Achievers Night. Being in this industry for over 15 years and having witnessed countless such events, this one has definitely come to be more special! Unlike hosting the celebs in the city back home, this involved flying in stars from across the globe adding to the world’s race towards normalcy from the global pandemic. It was a vision that Founder and Chairman Danube Group and Filmfare Middle East franchise owner, Mr Rizwan Sajan had and believed in inspite of the many challenges it posed. And we as a Team were driven by his passion and enthusiasm for it. We are a hardworking Team and have pulled off several successful events in the past year, however this event made us test our limits like no other. But backed by Mr Rizwan who put full faith in his Team, we overcame all obstacles to put on a show that made months of hard-work worth it. Sharmine Khan, this tigress spearheaded the team and has all my respects for putting together the memorable grand event. But more than that, it is for pulling the team closer still and leading like a fierce warrior. Manju, ensuring the smooth show flow, Aadharika, Hanan, Amit, Disha, Murtuza Bhai, Saniya, Sandra, Shubham and even ex-intern Ambika… all multi-tasking brilliantly. Here’s a Team that did not give up when most others would have… The Achievers night belonged to the Stars that the world knows about… But for me, my Teamies are also the stars that I will always celebrate. Take a bow you guys ! And on this note...

Here's Wishing All Of You a Very Happy Diwali

VALENTINE WEDDING FOR KATRINA-VICKY? Rumours about Katrina Kaif’s and Vicky Kaushal’s engagement refuse to die down. Our sources claim that the couple has taken their relationship to the next step. They insist that the couple is engaged and is ready to tie the knot. If our sources are to be believed it’s going to be a Valentine wedding. Come February and Katrina and Vicky will reportedly be wedded. We hear the preparations have already begun. Sabyasachi has started work on Katrina’s trousseu. We also hear that Katrina is trying to finish off all her work so she can take time off for the wedding. We are ecstatic to hear the news. And we wish the couple a very happy married life.

RANBIR KAPOOR READY FOR HIS OTT DEBUT Ranbir Kapoor is all set for an OTT debut. The actor might be part of an anthology which is titled Aisa Waisa Pyaar. According to the reports, the actor will be part of one of the four stories that connect each other. The makers want Ranbir to be part of this romantic web project as they are sure that his involvement will attract more eyeballs. Apparently the actor has given his nod for the project. Other actors like Ajay Devgn, Hrithik Roshan, Sonakshi Sinha are also planning their OTT debut soon.

KRITI SANON IS KEEN TO PLAY MADHUBALA AND MEENA KUMARI

KRITI SANON HAS JUST ‘DELIVERED’ A HIT WITH HER LAST FILM MIMI WHERE SHE PLAYED A SURROGATE MOTHER. RECENTLY, SHE LISTED OUT HER WISHLIST ABOUT THE KIND OF FILMS SHE WANTS TO DO. SHE SAID, “THERE ARE CERTAIN PERSONALITIES IN OUR FILM INDUSTRY WHO HAVE BEEN ICONIC AND WHOSE LIVES I FEEL PEOPLE DON’T REALLY KNOW MUCH ABOUT. BUT PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THEM. AND APART FROM MADHUBALAJI, I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY MEENA KUMARIJI IN HER BIOPIC. BOTH WERE ICONIC HEROINES OF THEIR TIME AND I PERSONALLY TOO WOULD LOVE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEM.”

BUILDING TRUST! Alia Bhatt has been accompanying Neetu Singh at the construction site of the KrishnaRaj bungalow, which is under reconstruction. The two women in Ranbir’s life have become quite close to each other and are said to be each other’s emotional anchor. It’s being said that Ranbir and Alia will shift into the completed house after their marriage. We’re surely looking forward to what’s going to be the biggest wedding in showbiz.

expert advice SALMAN KHAN AND KATRINA KAIF’S TIGER 3 TO HAVE A SONG GRANDER THAN SWAG SE SWAGAT

DR. SANA SAJAN Director of American Aesthetic Medical Center

THE MAGIC OF CHEMICAL PEEL An advanced treatment system that involves deep exfoliation of the outer layer of the skin using chemical peels, this procedure can improve the texture, tone, colour of the skin by smoothing fine wrinkles, clearing break-outs, correcting imperfections and scars, reducing the effect of sun damage and stimulating new collagen for visibly healthier, younger looking skin.

WHAT IS CHEMICAL PEEL?

A safe and simple cosmetic treatment that helps improve the appearance of dull, affected or ageing skin, chemical peel is performed using organic acids or peels of defined strengths. The procedure, which is usually done on the face, neck and arms can be safely performed in both men and women including teenagers by trained dermatologists with utmost care and precision.

Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan jetted off to Turkey to shoot for Tiger 3. Katrina even posted pictures and a video rehearsing some steps. The video stoked reports that the dance track in the film would outdo any song that the actress has done so far. According to latest reports, the song is a peppy track and will be shown at the end of the film during the rolling credits. Moreover, the song will be shot in Cappadocia and is expected to be grander than Swag se swagat which broke several records online. Directed by Maneesh Sharma, Tiger 3 is being bankrolled by Yash Raj Films. The budget of the film is set to be 350 crore making it the most expensive Bollywood film ever.

VARUN DHAWAN’S EKKIS BACK ON TRACK It was around 2019 that Varun Dhawan had announced that Sriram Raghavan was going to direct him in a film called Ekkis, which is based on the life of second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal. However, due to the pandemic, the film never took off. Now it seems the makers are ready to bring the film back on the floors. According to reports, Varun Dhawan will start working on the film from November this year. The actor will undergo extensive preparation and learn the diction, body language and other details as it’s his first biopic. The film will roll out in February 2022, if everything goes by plan. Fingers crossed!

HOW DO CHEMICAL PEELS WORK? The technique involves using organic acids or peels to exfoliate the superficial layer of the skin. It induces collagen re-modelling and promotes healthy skin cell regeneration to reveal brighter, younger looking skin with lesser wrinkles, blemishes and scars. It reduces the impact of sun damage and discoloration on the skin, rejuvenates oily, lifeless, acne / pimple prone skin and removes acne scars and hydrates the skin. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELS? Superficial Peel, gently exfoliates the skin to rectify mild skin discoloration. Medium Peel, penetrates to middle layers of skin to remove damaged skin cells. Deep Peel, helps remove moderate lines, age spots, freckles and shallow scars. HOW ARE CHEMICAL PEELS PERFORMED? The patient’s eyes are closed during the procedure. The skin is cleaned thoroughly and the chemical peel is applied. The peel is neutralized after the prescribed time. Chemical peels should be done every month for about 6 months to obtain the desired outcomes. WHAT ARE THE SKIN PROBLEMS / CONDITIONS THAT CAN BE TREATED USING CHEMICAL PEEL? Chemical Peels help treat: Acne prone, oily skin Sun-damaged skin Ageing skin Age spots Wrinkles Crow’s feet Hyperpigmentation Sagging skin

He drives into the Meydan Hotel in a Mercedes Benz jeep and reeks of power. He then rolls down his window and flashes a big smile that reaches the eyes and gives me a warm handshake. The Egyptian marvel is a sensation in the Arab world with fans dying to get a glimpse of him and watch him perform.

Mohamed Ramadan

A few selfies down and we settle down at the outer courtyard of the hotel as his phone rings. “My mother is calling to check on me.” he laughs. The biggest superstar of the Arab world, Mohammed Ramadan is charm personified – he is warm, friendly, gracious, generous and down to earth. We chat about his family, his children, his fast-paced life, his concert in Morocco that had not less than 400,000 people - easily the population of a small town! Unfazed by the adulation, he says it like it is. “My persona is for the stage. Off stage I am like anyone else. I am like you, I am like him,” he states. We are shooting the cover of the November edition at the Sajan villa where he arrives with his team. His album Gaw al Banat is about to release and he is a tad nervous about it. But soon, it is time for celebrations since the song is a chartbuster! In fact, there is a small cake cutting ceremony arranged for him and his happiness knows no bounds!

The Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night! The much-awaited performance took the event to its crescendo with Ramadan arriving to the scene in a Lamborghini and dancing for the crowd and belting out his famous numbers! Now we know why he is Number 1! Mohamed Ramadan was felicitated with the Filmfare Middle East Superstar of the Arab World! From school days you were interested in acting and performing. Were you never shy to go onstage? What was your first role? I started my journey early, while at school. For that reason I always encourage people and school to concentrate more on different activities, as children start building their personalities and visions early. It’s an amazing thing to provide the child with different options that will help him discover his interests. I always speak about the importance of having different activities as part of school programs. Was your family supportive of acting? How did they encourage you? They supported me from the beginning and encouraged and motivated me and always made me feel better. They attended all my shows and acts and really cared about me. Tell us about the TV series Cinderella and how were the struggling years? I played the role of a big Arab celebrity named Ahmed Zaki in Cinderella. I also did a series called “Awlad Shawria’a” and it had the Egyptian actor Hanan Turk. My first play “A’adeen Leh” was with the late actor Saeed Saleh. November 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 11

COVER STORY

The great Omar Sharif praised you and named you as the man who would take his legacy forward. Tell us about this experience? What the great Mr Omar Sharif said about me humbles me. It is a responsibility and I would always like people to think that he had a point when he said that. From 2018 to 2021 - your career shot up. How did you prepare for this fast paced life and immense popularity? My career started in the year 2012 with the first movie and it was a huge hit and was successful. I have always believed that I can make my dreams come true and was always prepared for success. What are the five important things to be No 1 in the Arab music world? I wonder why you aren’t asking me about 3 things (Laughs). To bond with the audience , creating different kinds of things for their entertainment, giving them better quality of work, ensuring that I am offering my audience good entertainment across different age groups and types of people - has always been my aim. Tell us about your interest in football and how did learning a sport help in your music career/ What qualities are same to both? Sport is a very important thing to me. My work depends on my fitness whether it is a web-series or a film, a performance in theatre or a music video - all of this requires a high level of fitness. I move for over 2 hours onstage and for that my fitness levels have to be great. Were you a naughty child? What did you buy for your mother frin your first salary? No, on the contrary, I was a quiet child is what I am told. I bought my mother a ring from my first salary. Tell us about the importance of family? Family is the most important thing for us. It helps in creating the personality of a human being and prepares and evolves his vision and ambition. All that. a man aims for and how he plans his future, comes from his family. How do you look at power? How does a powerful person change the world? Power itself is not enough to change the world. Vision changes the world and the one who has a strong and clear vision will be able to change the world. Power without vision or intelligence isn’t enough. Those who have the energy and insist to win will change the world. You aim is be the first Arab, African, Egyptian actor to be number one in the world. Who is your motivation? I am an Arabic Egyptian- African actor and my audience has to be convinced that I am number one. While my people in the Middle East and Egypt are convinced, my concentration is now on Africa. That is my main goal. You have performed to an audience of 400,000 people. How do you connect with so many people? That was at an event in Marrakech sponsored by the king of Morocco, His Majesty King Mohammed VI. It was a great feeling since I communicated with the 400,000 people from my heart and I know that those are my people and my second family. When I am on stage I feel like I am at home.

You are an online sensation. How do you use your fame to inspire young people? I don’t work for fame. I work for art and what I can give to people.I work for my projects and connect to people since I try to bring out what audiences would like to hear. To be famous is not my main focus. It happens. Earning so much love and respect in the world is a blessing. How do you see fame and how do you deal with it when you are not onstage or in front of the camera? When I am away from the stage and camera, I am normal and simple. Allah blessed me with a huge audience and I thank God. I can repay this love by loving people back. I am happy that I can give them something very special, through my art. What are your future projects? Will you collaborate with Bollywood? I am working with the legendary Soolking who is Algerian and well known in Europe. I am also working on a project with Gims, a French-African singer. I have a new movie and a music album that will hit the grounds in 2022 and a project with an Indian celebrity. It is a video shoot for a brand that is present in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. It will be a big hit for Indians and Arabs. You worked with Bollywood star Urvashi Rautela. Tell us about the collab? I am very happy to be working with Urvashi and she is a dear friend. She believes in me and what I am capable of. I am very grateful that she helped me with my song Versace baby. I always look forward to projects that will bring us together in the future.

Urvashi Rautela She is a regular face in Dubai and flawless to a T. I meet her at the Al Habtoor Hotel where she talks of her Golden visa and how it is an honour for her to receive it from the government. It is a month to go to our event and she is excited to be performing alongside Mohammed Ramadan who, she starred with in Versace Baby.

We meet for the shoot at Sajan Villa where she enters wearing a pink track suit and dark blue framed glasses and tries on the many outfits laid out for her by our stylist Chloe.

I meet Urvashi at the breakfast table with her mother and manager Prashant. All the stars have arrived and the air is heavy with star power. She rehearses her act onstage at the Meydan Apron view and we know that her performance is going to be electrifying!

Urvashi Rautela receives her felicitation for the Filmfare Middle East International Icon (Versace Baby). She sizzles on the dance floor and also appears with Mohamed Ramadan in his song!

COVER STORY When did you realise that acting was something you wanted to do? Acting wasn’t something I had decided to do always. I was in school in Uttarakhand, probably in my Class 7 when, during the weekend break my dad’s friend, who was a regional filmmaker chose me for a small role in his film. It was the character of a small girl who was devoted to her nation and I had to face the camera and talk about my country and state. This was the first time I was introduced to the field of acting. Years later, after I won Miss Universe India, Aditya Chopra offered me the lead in Ishaqzaade that I couldn’t take up because of my Miss Universe commitments. Then Singh Saab the Great got released and I went with the flow and realised that this is where I want to be. What does being a beauty queen mean to you? Beauty isn’t just skin deep. Your heart has to be beautiful and that is what matters. It is what you maintain after the beauty pageant titles, magazine covers or photo shoots. It will be my charity work and public appearances espousing a cause that will matter always. I work through my foundation – the Urvashi Rautela foundation that works in the field of education, caring for the elderly and women empowerment. Move the world with your actions and not just the way you look. What are the most challenging aspects of your life and how did you overcome them? I had to work on a lot of things. These included fear – fear of self-doubt, insecurity, fear of failure, material limitations, fear of the unknown, fear of trusting in guidance. I have battled and won issues of self-acceptance, selfidentity and moved towards the path of self-empowerment. I have been an out-ofbox thinker and that has helped me chase my dream. Also listening to my inner guidance that taught me to be brave and resilient, has made it all happen. If you trust the process, you will see the light at the end of the tunnel. You have been awarded the UAE Visa? Is Dubai like your second home? I am the first Indian Bollywood actress to receive the golden visa. It is a privilege and I am honoured to receive it. The UAE is a great place to live, work and thrive. It is picturesque with beautiful blue skies and a well- sculpted water front and the blue sea waters. It has many sports clubs and dining out experiences that are exceptional. It has great education and culture and since there is no tax on income, people enjoy all luxuries of life. Shopping is great here and crime is low, people drive the best cars here and the standard of living is high, so it is the best places to live. It is my second home and

the golden visa has the security of insurance and that makes me feel extra secure about living here. Tell us about your fitness regime and how a disciplined life helps you to always be on the top of the game? Fitness is in the quality of food you intake and the quality of your work out. I avoid fried foods and drink a lot of detox juices and my meals are small portions always. When I am not in the mood of workouts, I prefer dancing and that uplifts my mood and keeps me well toned. When did you meet Mohamed Ramadan and how did the collaboration happen? I met him during a concert in Jan 2019.The Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred had

14 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST November 2021

invited me and I went to watch the concert and after the show, Mohamed was performing. He then offered me Versace Baby and we shot it during the lockdown. He also offered me Ya Habibi but there was lockdown in Egypt and I couldn’t travel. It is elating to know that he considers me in his first choice in collaboration. Are you working together again? What are his qualities that you admire the most? Mohamed Ramadan is a great musician, singer and a rockstar. But he is also a versatile actor and though he looks like a spoilt brat in his music videos, his film roles are very different. He has a lot of conviction as an artist and he can be part of any Bollywood film too just like I can be part of an Arabic film. In the future there will be more of fusion between these two industries in terms of music, films and concerts and I am looking forward to it. What are the 5 qualities about yourself that you admire the most? I am loyal, sincere, disciplined, dedicated and honest and these are the qualities I admire about myself. What are your international collaborations now? I have several international collaborations. One with an American musician, one African and one Russian collab. I am also busy with my Bollywood films and now Tamil cinema as well. I have a lot on my plate right now. Tell us about your support systems? I am extremely grateful to my mum and dad and blessed to have them in my life. They have always supported me all the way and it is a blessing to have such parents and I am really lucky. You are venturing towards South Indian cinema. How do you manage the language? The language might be different but how we portray and expression onscreen is the same. A new language is tough but you can mug up your lines and portray the right emotion. And when you have the right director, things are much better Do you have a five-year plan? Honestly, I never plan. Things might go the other way if I do. I like to live with the flow though I am goal oriented at the same time. Tell us about your childhood years? You come from a family of strong women? I was always taught to be strong physically and mentally. I was into sports and I had a physically stimulating childhood along with studies and co-curricular activities. I had amazing childhood. Tell us about shooting the Filmfare Middle East cover with Mohamed Ramadan? We really connected well. Also, we have a few similarities. We are dedicated towards our job and towards our work. We bond well and we both are workaholics and want to do the best. So, shooting the cover with him was fantastic.

GREEN REVOLUTION KIARA ADVANI WHERE: SHERSHAAH PROMOTIONS THE X FACTOR: THE UNIQUE GREEN HUE

Kiara Advani and sarees are a lethal combination. Right from the start of her career, she’s served some of her finest looks in sarees and one of our favourites came along during her recent movie promotions. Kiara looked like a dream in this lime green drape by Torani. The intricate white embroidery around the scalloped border and the floral blouse with a V-neck made this one of her most raid-worthy looks. She finishes it off with a low neat bun, a pair of jhumkas and bright pink bangles to add a pop of colour to this stunning look.

The pandemic has made us fall in love with the casual wear in our wardrobes. Work from home means we can stay in comfy sweat suits and pyjamas even when duty calls. So much that we've learnt to transform these into impeccable party wear. One piece of clothing that’s doing the trick for us ladies is the classic trench coat. You can just let it hang off your shoulders or belt it over athleisure and you’ve got yourself an ensemble ready for the outside world. We’ve spotted this trend more than ever before in B-town. Making casual sportswear look super chic, our divas have been resorting to overcoats and trenches to make a style statement.

Being at the helm of the largest English language newspaper in the Middle East is a long chapter in constant learning and updating oneself as per the changing times. Manju Ramanan speaks to the very accomplished and much respected Abdul Hamid Ahmad, CEO, Editor-in-Chief & Executive Director Publications, Gulf News and Mr Meher Murshed, Executive Editor, Gulf News, Al Nisr Publishing LLC.

YOU HAVE BEEN A CHEMICAL ENGINEER MR ABDUL HAMID, A SHORT-STORY WRITER,JOURNALIST AND HEAD OF THE DUBAI POLICE MEDIA. TELL US ABOUT YOUR STORY? Mr.Abdul Hamid You have done your homework. I started in 1979 and it has been over 40 years with publications. I started with a magazine and moved to an Arabic newspaper daily Al Bayan and since 2001, have been part of Gulf News. I have been through the brand’s struggles and challenges and many achievements. We were the first in the business to launch the tabloid, the first to be introducing color pages, the first to re-size to international standards and recently, we are transforming our media to be more digital. ‘Digital first’ is our strategy and we are the only newspaper to go behind the wall. It was a challenge at one point and now a reality and a successful one at that! YOU HAVE MEMORIES OF THE FIRST CAR THAT DROVE INTO YOUR VILLAGE AND NOW YOU HEAD A HIGHLY DIGITIZED NEWSPAPER WHICH IS ALSO IN PRINT? Mr.Abdul Hamid Yes, I do. I am born in 1957 and we call ourselves the golden generation. We lived in difficult times. I have been through a time when we didn’t have enough water to

drink. Also, schools weren’t available as they are now. I have seen the union of the UAE when it became one country and this year, we complete 50 years. I have experienced both the old and new eras of this country and still learning and developing new skills and enjoy being updated with the latest development in the digital space. So yes, I have been part of the old and the new worlds. As for short stories, I have three collections so far. I used to write a daily article in the Arabic newspaper and some of the articles are part of my book. Some of my own experiences are there in the stories I have written. THE PANDEMIC WAS A TRYING TIME FOR ALL OF US. HOW DID YOUR DIGITAL ARM TAKE OVER DURING THAT PERIOD? Mr.Meher Murshed: The pandemic was the time print had taken a hit and people were online most of the time. It was also the time our digital traffic increased and it wasn’t something we didn’t fathom. We had studied audience behaviour and had decided to place our news accordingly. In fact, we launched paywall and it did very well (where you can partially read an article online and have to pay to read the full article). Social media

INTERVIEW

We tell our people that whether you write on the bark of a tree, a blackboard or in the digital space, the platform does not matter - the story has to be

strong. It has to be correct and verified. numbers shot up since print was restricted. During the pandemic our online traffic was very high because our information was accurate and relevant.

Meher Murshed

TELL US ABOUT INCORPORATING PAYWALL, HOW BRAVE A DECISION WAS IT AND HOW HAS IT IMPACTED YOUR REACH? Mr.Abdul Hamid: We lead the business in this region and we do take risks but calculated risks. We prepare well and are confident of our content, that goes beyond news reporting. We are in constant touch with our readers. The verticals we launched are reader-friendly and gives them information, explanations and tips of what is happening around them locally, regionally and globally. ‘Living in the UAE,’ for instance, is one of our products that is designed for people planning to come here and those already living here. We have products on how to save money and we help people with wealth management. Parenting is yet another area of our interest and so are investigative reports and success stories. News might be available everywhere but the way we guide the reader to what could impact him or her is our strength. More of such products are being planned to be added to the pipeline. Mr.Meher Murshed: We are in the strongest position ever in terms of paywall and we have seen other people use the same concept and fail. What was important for us was the self-belief that if we switch to paywall – it would happen successfully! And we had to strike the fine balance to not succumb to social media pressure resorting to ‘click bait’ content that is flippant. We all know that print is declining and the younger generation consumes news and entertainment on their mobile phones. So, sooner or later, we have to get there. But content should have a price. It is a necessity. And we do not compromise on our ethics. On the work front, my boss is a very senior journalist who heads the department and understands content the way journalists do. It is a great plus for me. YOU HAVE MENTIONED THAT, TO BE THE NO 1 NEWSPAPER IN THE ARAB WORLD, IT IS THE CUSTOMER BASE THAT HAVE TO BE LAUDED. HOW DID YOU KEEP THEM WITH YOU DURING THE TRANSITION FROM PRINT TO DIGITAL? Mr.Abdul Hamid: Over the years we have gained a huge amount of trust among our readers and they have been with us always. We have a huge responsibility when the audience trusts us. We might hold back announce new announcements sometimes till we are 100 percent sure. We never post anything till we are totally 20 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST November 2021

certain, since we have that responsibility. People believe that if they read it in Gulf News, it is the truth be it print or digital. Mr.Meher Murshed: We tell our people that whether you write on the bark of a tree, a blackboard or in the digital space, the platform does not matter - the story has to be strong. It has to be correct and verified. And most print journalists have gone through a learning curve today where they are facing the camera. We also cater to this generation that doesn’t look at print but continues to consume news and entertainment on their phones. So, you have to be there. The reader is smart and we build our content around our readers. We have Mr Anis Sajan, Vice Chairman of the Danube Group (also called Mr Cricket UAE) who covers cricket for us, as he loves the game. We also had our readers do the same. Our readers are knowledgeable. WITH REDUCED ATTENTION SPANS AMONGST READERS, HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH LONG FORM CONTENT? Mr.Abdul Hamid Long form is not everyone’s cup of tea. But the digital space has created more room to make long form interesting. When we do special features, we can create a box link leading to a certain part of the story, or add a video or sets of photos. So, our storytelling process gets stronger. Reporters can turn around a story instantly and then we have the research team who specialize with facts, figures and graphs that add accuracy to the story.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ASSOCIATION WITH FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST AND THE FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST ACHIEVERS NIGHT. IT IS A HUGE CELEBRATION POST PANDEMIC! Mr.Abdul Hamid In Gulf News, we have always supported local events, be it in the world of sport, culture, art and cinema. Filmfare is a prestigious name to associate with and it comes with a legacy, history and culture. So, we decided to partner with the show as the media partner and this is a start to a long association. The event was a grand success. The UAE has opened up to several events and there is great hope in these events. People are waiting to dress up and go out and be entertained. Mr.Meher Murshed A partnership with Filmfare Middle East’s Achievers Night is also telling our audience that we are listening to what they want. It is therefore important for us to be part of them.

MR.Abdul Hamid Ahmad presenting felicitation to Manushi Chhillar

The Arab world has a Bollywood DNA too Mr.Abdul Hamid

After the pandemic, people want to feel normal. Be it the Dubai Expo, the IPL or Bollywood events, we are coming back to normal.

Mr.Meher Murshed When Covid-19 struck, we had medical experts on board who would guide people. There was so much of information online, some of it completely baseless and untrue, that we had to lay the precedent with careful research and streamline news to the reader so that he was educated about the ground reality and empowered as well.

THE ARAB WORLD HAS SUPPORTED BOLLYWOOD IN A BIG WAY AND CONTINUES TO DO SO. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE REASON FOR THIS ARDENT LOVE OVER THE YEARS? Mr.Abdul Hamid The UAE, has a special relationship with India. We have an exchange of trade and culture across the two countries. In the 1950’s in the UAE, many people studied and even worked in India. During the 60s and 70s, nearly all cinema theatres used to run Bollywood films. It was a rare sight to see one or two Arabic or Hollywood films back then. The Emiratis love Bollywood and I have watched the movies of Dara Singh and Dilip Kumar. At that time, I remember some young Emirati boys would even get costumes done like the ones in films. The Arab world has a Bollywood DNA, too. November 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 21

Beautiful

The gorgeous Manushi Chhillar who is a medical professional turned actor is the perfect example of beauty and brains. The actor who espouses the cause of menstrual hygiene has been Miss World 2017 and has used her fame, skill and social media to extend out to humanitarian causes. She will be seen opposite Akshay Kumar in her debut film Prithviraj. She plays the role of the ethereally beautiful Princess Sanyogita in the much-awaited Yash Raj Film. The upcoming actor walked the red carpet and was felicitated at the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night 22 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST October 2021

Manushi, who won the coveted Miss World crown 17 years after Priyanka Chopra bagged the honour of Miss World, is a vocal citizen who uses her social media to bring awareness towards various relevant issues like menstrual hygiene for young girls in India, vegetarianism, immunization etc. She was part of World Immunization Week engaging with people on social media to spread this important message far and wide. Manushi says, “Vaccines have helped generations of children grow up in good health, safe from infectious and dangerous diseases like polio and measles. To save lives, we must redouble our efforts to vaccinate children - particularly the most vulnerable. We must not let #COVID19 disrupt children’s access to life-saving childhood vaccines.”

MANUSHI

She adds, “Vaccines will help protect children from the most devastating impacts of infectious diseases. As we wait for #COVID19 vaccines to roll out more widely, let’s remember to vaccinate our children against other highly contagious diseases which remain a serious threat to their lives.” Manushi who is a vegetarian herself has always encouraged everyone to try being vegetarian. The Prithviraj actress was roped in by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India. In the PETA, national campaign Manushi sported a crown made of broccoli, asparagus, and tomatoes to drive home the message of vegetarianism. “For me, staying vegetarian was a personal choice that I made long back. I wanted to concentrate on how that impacts my overall fitness. Food is a personal choice and we must eat what we feel is best for us, but my friends at PETA India and I encourage everyone to give being vegetarian a try for Earth Day and beyond if they so choose.” According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, animal agriculture – breeding, raising, and slaughtering animals for food – is responsible for about 14.5% of global greenhouse-gas emissions, which, by some estimates, is greater than all the world’s transportation systems combined. What’s more, animal agriculture uses one-third of the world’s fresh water and onethird of global cropland for feed. Water scarcity already affects every continent – over two billion people live in countries experiencing high levels of water shortages, and more than 690 million people still go hungry.

CHHILLAR When Manya, the daughter of an auto driver from Uttar Pradesh, was crowned at the virtual Miss India ceremony, Manushi was all praises.” There is no challenge that cannot be overcome. Manya’s story will always stand as a true testament to this fact,” she had reacted. Ask her about her character Sanyogita in her debut film Prithviraj and she states that she is one empowered woman. “Imagine choosing your match in a public gathering. She was a force of nature,” reveals Manushi. And what about working with Akshay Kumar? “He is extremely disciplined and I am inspired by that quality. He is an early riser and since I have been a medical student and used to wake up early to study, I am early riser too. There is so much to learn from his approach to discipline and fitness and I am lucky that my first film is with a superstar like him,” she signs off. October 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 23

to Bollywood and cricket. In a few years, he realizes his dream. This description though, is a lot easier said than done. From a single staffer employed back in 2014, today over 300 people work for Amit Majithia, Founder and Owner of BCC Events, Dubai and BCC Music. Manju Ramanan chats up with successful entrepreneur who is passionate about the work he does and dismisses off several arduous working hours, toil, patience, resilience as ‘part of the job.’ His focus is on the bigger picture – that includes making music, producing a webseries and owning a cricket team. WHEN DID YOU COME TO DUBAI AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE BUSINESS OF ENTERTAINMENT? I came to Dubai in 2016 and got into the business of entertainment between 2017-18 because we figured out that people love music here. There were many avenues for English music but a limited number for desi music and live singing, despite the Indian population being very fond of music. Also, there wasn’t a single casino theme café and I decided, why not do it? DO YOU HAVE A BACKGROUND IN MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS IN YOUR FAMILY? Music is my passion and it echoes in my soul and I have been an ardent music lover for over 27 years. I would listen to music daily for 2-4 hours and though I am not a professional singer, I can identify and judge songs very well. I can tell when a singer’s voice has gone awry and it is all from experience. I am a 90’s music fan and have grown up to the music of Kumar Sanu, Abhijeet, Shaan, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan etc. I know 5000 songs plus their lyrics by heart. One of my favourite songs in Chaand Taare from the film Yes Boss, sung by Abhijeet. I love that song! WHERE ARE YOU FROM BACK HOME AND WERE YOU ALWAYS INTERESTED IN THIS SPACE? I grew up in Kutch in Gujarat and then moved to Ahmedabad. I was always interested in the entertainment industry. I was creative and would take part in school dramas to show my talent. I am fond of comedy and would go onstage at weddings to perform a comedy act. In fact, I did a 15-minute-act at my own wedding. But music is my passion and I use money from my other businesses to ensure that l keep my interest alive. I can afford to do that today. HOW WERE YOUR INITIAL YEARS IN THIS INDUSTRY AND WHAT WERE THE LESSONS YOU LEARNT? We made huge losses in the initial years and with the money I lost, I could have easily bought 2-4 clubs. I have learnt to not get too excited and use my budget discerningly. I have learnt to not believe in people blindly and listen to what people are saying and take my own decisions. Look at where you want to spend money and spend it sensibly. Do it well and do it yourself with your team. YOU STARTED OUT WITH EMPLOYING ONE PERSON IN 2010 AND TODAY HAVE A STAFF OF OVER 300 PEOPLE, HOW DID YOU SUSTAIN THEM DURING THE PANDEMIC? November 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 39

In a year we will be 1000. As for the music department I have about 10-12 people and we plan to make 40 songs per year. Out of this 20 will be with established artists and 20 will be with new talent that includes RCR, Amit Kumar of Indian Idol 6, Shahid Shabash and more. HOW DID YOU MANAGE THE PANDEMIC? My business wasn’t affected by pandemic and I didn’t have to cut salaries because work was getting done from home. My other businesses fed the ones that were not doing well. We value our staff like family and none of them were asked to go. WHAT ARE THE DOS AND THE DON’TS OF THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS ACCORDING TO YOU? We all know how social media likes can be bought and many big artistes have a coterie where they promote each other before the release of their music or film and make it viral. New comers don’t have that advantage. So, for our new artistes, we keep a promotional budget so that they are presented well. I have realised

that it is not how tasty the food is, it is the way it is presented that matters after all. I see a lot of songs being copied. I have been approached by lyricists telling me that they will sell their work to me and I could add my name to it. I don’t accept that. I tell them that they are your songs and you need to get credit for them. WHAT MAKES YOU UNSTOPPABLE? I have a few rules that I follow. My brother, who was my guru, passed away and I have learnt from him to never accept defeat and always treat your staff like family. I am the captain and my staff is my team. I don’t have the boss-employee relationship in my office and treat everyone equally. What makes me unstoppable is simple – if you have a flaming idea in your heart and the money in your purse, there is nothing you cannot buy except your parents and God. My favourite line is this – What I know I will do and what I don’t know, I will learn and do. This has helped me always in my life. YOU ARE PRODUCING MUSIC THESE DAYS. TELL US ABOUT IT AND WHAT IS THE LINEUP WE CAN EXPECT FROM YOU? I am working with talent such as RCR, Samarjeet, Amit Kumar of Indian Idol and many big names but I cannot reveal anything

right away since the papers are being signed. THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS GOING THROUGH A HUGE CHANGE WITH INDEPENDENT MUSIC MORE HAPPENING THAN FILM MUSIC TODAY. HOW DO YOU SEE IT? My attempt is to be one of the top 3 music companies in India in the next 3-4 years. And what do I do when I reach there is what is important. I want to see talent and music industry grow and not just make money. I want to see lyrics writers, musicians, composers and singers from every house and that talent is encouraged. WHAT ABOUT GETTING INTO PRODUCING FILMS AND WEB SERIES CONTENT? Yes, I will be working on a web-series on cricket shortly. WHAT IS DAY IN THE LIFE OF AMIT MAJITHIA LIKE? I am party animal and I party 27 days a month. I sleep at 4 am and wake up by 12 pm. I answer 400 whatsapp messages daily and handle my own social media and PR. I am my own brand. Apart from gaming, BCC music and events, I also work for a few NGOS and will start my own soon. My aim is to retire before I turn 45 years old after which I will do things that satisfy my soul. YOU OWN THE BCC CLUB THAT PROMOTES YOUNG ARTISTS. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PLANS AT EXPANSION? We will be taking BCC to a 5-star hotel soon by March 2022. We will then open other branches at two more locations on SZR and Dubai Marina. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS? I have to create 50-60 music through BCC music, I plan to produce a web series on match fixing that will release in the beginning of 2023 and then I want to buy a cricket team and get into sports management too.

Beauty Naturally! DUBAI BASED MAKE-UP ARTISTE ENRICAA SPEAKS TO MANJU RAMANAN ON HOW BEAUTY ISN’T SKIN DEEP. WHEN DID YOU START YOUR JOURNEY WITH BEAUTY AND HOW DO YOU SEE IT GROW? My journey with beauty started as soon as I came back from university in 2011. First, it started with managing a ladiesonly beauty & wellness business, then, moved on to pursuing makeup artistry in 2015. I’ve seen the industry evolve in a way where natural beauty looks still remain at the core of everything, but to the point where women are trying to seek perfection in looking “natural” but actually doing a lot more to get there. UAE is also a market that has been expanding in this sector year over year, and I can see the industry make progress with the growth of local homegrown beauty brands, both in makeup and skincare. These brands are trying to attract the local customer base, gain their loyalty and grow this market further, in order to be recognized on a global scale. Homegrown brands are becoming a much more cost-effective option for the locals, and the drive to support local businesses has become fairly prominent. WHAT ARE THE FIVE MUST DOS FOR THE WINTERS WHEN IT COMES TO SKIN AND HAIR? a.Hair seems to get drier in the winter just like skin does, so definitely start incorporating a hair mask regularly in your routine, and take extra care if you have a dry scalp, as it sometimes leads to flaky dandruff. The best way to avoid dry scalps is a good oil massage to keep the scalp healthy, or an anti—dandruff shampoo. b.Use richer moisturizers/ moisturize extra to keep the skin well hydrated and moisturized in the winter as skin loses moisture faster in this weather, making it feel drier and itchier in some cases. Use creams over lotions, as they

are thicker in texture and a lot more moisturizing. c.If you’re facing hair static problems in the winter, turn to leave-in conditioners for your hair. That extra moisture needs to be put back into your hair, to avoid further damage to your tresses. d.Skin health is also from within. Eat more of foods that are rich in healthy fats such as avocados, to maintain supple and bouncy skin. Healthy fats are essential in preventing skin on your hands and face to dry out, and keeping them looking healthy throughout the cold months. e.Incorporate face oils into your skincare regime if you feel your skin needs extra nourishment in winter. Don’t use the oil on its own, but mix a few drops in your day or night cream depending on your skin type. If natural oils (argan, rosehip etc) don’t suit you, then consult a dermatologist to prescribe the right routine for your skin. f.Avoid fragrance and alcohol- Try using a lighter fragrance-free cleanser for your skin, as stronger soaps can worsen skin making it feel itchy and dry. Turn to cream-based cleansers if you’re addicted to washing your face. Gentler face cleansing options will be more soothing to your skin in these months, especially if you already have dry skin. WHAT IS SPECIFIC TO DUBAI AND ITS BEAUTY DEMANDS? The demand for halal beauty, clean beauty, vegan and cruelty free cosmetics are rapidly increasing in this region, and entrepreneurs are innovating and grabbing every opportunity possible. When it comes to makeup, there are all sorts of styles in this city. You can go from natural international glam to

a full Arabic makeup glam, but the beauty lies in the variety of work being offered by artists here. There’s a solution for everyone when it comes to being dolled up for an occasion. The demands here can be challenging especially if you haven’t had enough work experience in this industry or enough exposure, so it is important to create that for yourself, and grab every opportunity of work to adapt to this fast-paced market. Over the years, makeup artistry has become a more demanding field and beauty standards have been raised, as people have become more aware of trends etc, and have more content easily available to learn from, so it is important to know where you stand, and work to improvise your art every single day. Also, with the progress of the digital world, it’s a lot more than just doing makeup for an artist- it’s an entire network that you have to build and leave a mark on, almost like defining your personality & identity to them in as many ways possible. It should be an experience to remember. TELL US ABOUT THE CELEBRITIES YOU WORK WITH? I’m so grateful to have worked with such iconic figures in the industryAnanya Birla, Kanika Kapoor, Shalmaleei Kolgade, Rahul Bose, Amaal Mallik, just to name a few. HOW DO YOU DEFINE BEAUTY? For me, beauty has no boundaries. I like to define it many ways, one of them being a way of empowering yourself by embracing your imperfections, and working on enhancing your natural self in a way that feels so powerful, almost like you are ready to conquer the world. With the right makeup, you don’t have to BE flawless, you have to FEEL flawless- it should be a feeling inside and out. WHO DO YOU THINK ARE THREE MOST ADMIRED ARTISTES? My favourite makeup artists that are also truly my inspiration are Mario Dedivanovic, Pat McGrath & Val Garland. November 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 43

Jaideep Ahlawat is clearly one of the most celebrated names on the OTT circuit today. After making audience sit back and notice his impressive acting chops in films like Gangs of Wasseypur,

Commando, Raazi, amongst others, and wowing critics with his break-out performance as Hathiram Choudhary in Paatal Lok and cementing it with Ajeeb Dastans, Jaideep is on a roll. Honoured at the Milano Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night as the Most Iconic Star on OTT, the actor talks to Aakanksha Naval-Shetye about his journey and well-deserved success

How does it feel, being recognized as the Filmfare Middle East Iconic OTT Star? I have always believed in letting my work speak. And I guess it has spoken. I’m happy, I’m thrilled, and I’m inspired to do even better. Thank you Filmfare Middle East. How much do awards and the success of your projects mean? I won’t say that awards and recognition don’t matter, sure they do. Even at home as a kid, if you did something good and the parents appreciated you just to recognize the effort that you put in, it made you happy and it made you work harder. So it’s a motivation to work, it gives you pleasure, but then again, if you don’t get it, I don’t take it personally. You can always aspire to reach there. So there’s a motivation there too (laughs). But it’s great to have that award or recognition in your hand, its human nature. And I don’t think there’s anybody who would say that they really don’t care. You are recognized as one of the most talented performers currently, do you think it was long due? I don’t know, you tell me whether it’s long due or not. Well, I do think it should have been much earlier. But I believe everything takes its own course of time and I’m glad I finally got it. But I would like to continue to surprise my audience, thrill them with my work, entertain them, show them something new and something amazing each time I take to the screen. So that’s my thing… to try and do my best. What would you consider as the turning point in your career? There have been many such turning points all through, like Gangs of Wasseypur, Raazi, Paatal Lok, Commando… But I think the biggest one was Raazi and then Paatal Lok, because Raazi made the industry see and believe that there was this actor who one should watch out for. And then ofcourse Paatal Lok came and changed everything. After this there was no one who didn’t know of me as an actor, so I think the biggest one is Paatal Lok, though it was Gangs of Wasseypur and Raazi that put me out there. What have been your milestone roles? Like I said, Shahid Khan in Gangs of Wasseypur, AK74 in Commando, and Khalid Mir in Raazi, and ofcourse Hathiram Choudhary in Paatal Lok, these would be definitely my milestone roles. What’s your process of choosing a role and how has it changed since you started your journey as an actor? Well the most important thing is the story for sure,

because if you don’t like that screenplay and the storyline, there is no point in doing it except for the big cheques. But if you hear a story and it doesn’t affect you in some way, then there is no motivation to do it so that’s what the criteria is. Then of course there’s the director and the production house, and the way the script is written and how much contribution your character is going to make into it. It’s great to have fantastic co-actors as it’s not your responsibility to save that film (laughs). So it’s great to have a good director and DoP (Director of Photography), but yes, the story is primary. It has to have that magic. Today actors are being as celebrated as stars, what’s your take on that? It’s a great thing to have actors celebrated as stars, but I feel it’s always been there in some percentage in Indian cinema. But yes it’s a great feeling. I strongly believe that if you find the actor who can hero your story, that’s always great. Because at the end of the day, there’s a story and there’s a hero of the story so that’s always going to be interesting. Are you happy with the kind of roles coming your way and what’s on your wish-list? To be honest, I’m happy. But you know, we are all greedy as actors and so am I when it comes to good roles, good stories and everything else. So you can be happy, but you also want something new, something more challenging and interesting each time. So I’m happy, but also want more, that’s how I would put it. I always just want to be a part of great and really good stories. What kind of roles do you find yourself attracted to the most? As I said, for me it’s about being a part of a great story. When it comes to roles, I love characters that are layered, that have more aspects to the personality. Well-developed layered characters who are vulnerable, yet strong. That was also what made Hathiram so interesting. He can be the most powerful, intimidating, and most ruthless, yet he’s the most weakest and vulnerable around. So that’s such a human thing, and I like those characters. How do you look back on your career graph? I never look at my career graph as a struggle. Because that’s what I wanted to do and that’s what I signed up for, knowing that there will be ups and downs, and that struggle cannot be exclusive in anybody’s life. The term itself cannot be exclusive, we are all a part of that, so I had my graph. I had my ups and downs when I almost got the films I wanted, then there were slip-ups and did not get them as I was not a recognized face, and then there are roles that don’t take you anywhere and that hurts too. But you go November 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 45

back and work harder, than you get something that people recognize, but there is no outcome sometimes and it doesn’t translate to the kind of work you want. That went on for 10 years, but I think it’s a part of the journey. And some people get it soon and some get it later. But it hurts sometimes that it could have been earlier, but then it’s okay. Every day is a new day you move on. How do you plan to balance between movies and OTT, is there a preference? No, I don’t plan to balance anything as such. In fact, there’s no point on planning anything. You wait for good stories whether its OTT or movies, you go for it, and then you wait for the next one, so I don’t want to make any plan out of it, let it be organic, let the stories find me or I find the stories. I want to work on both and would love to have great stories on both of them. Who have been your acting role models? Many to be honest! You see as actors, you get inspired when you watch good performances. And in that, my favourites are Irrfan saab, Manoj bhai (Bajpai), Naseer Saab (Naseeruddin Shah), Om Puri Saab, Sanjeev Kumar Sahab…. And of course Dilip Saab (Dilip Kumar). It’s always great to watch these actors. There are these actors who generations across can watch and get inspired. Among the international actors, I really admire Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman. I always enjoy watching them on screen so yes, many people who have inspired me. Tell us about your upcoming projects? After the pandemic we started shooting and I did Maharaja with YRF (Yash Raj Films) directed by Siddharth P Malhotra that will release soon, and there’s a web-series that I did with BBC, it’s a remake of the show called Guilt, so we are making that in Hindi and I just finished these two and I’m moving to the next one. So hopefully a couple more in the months ahead and the journey goes on. 46 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST November 2021

INTERVIEW

k s Ma C I S MU & i t s a M

These are the three words that describe DJ Emwee. You don’t need to see his face to recognize him. DJ Emwee has won the Best DJ in Arab Asia Starz and we saw him mixing music at the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night on the 28th of October at The Meydan Hotel. His music has no boundaries and his mask is not just for the sake of following Covid-19 protocols he’s had one since year. Hanan Yehia Mulazem speaks with the man who plays music on his finger tips and discovers what’s the secret of his DJ name. WHAT IS THE SECRET BEHIND THE NAME EMWEE? When I came up with my DJ name, I wanted something powerful, but with meaning. The ‘M’ and the ‘V’ are abbreviations of my parent’s names, Madhu and Vijaya, hence EMWEE. I came up with the kind of name that will always be connected to me, and represent everything I believe in. HOW DID YOU START YOUR JOURNEY IN BEING A DJ? I have a unique connection with music and in mixing it. I constantly felt the need to bring out something of my own in the world of music. Mixing up different

styles and coming out with something no one’s heard before inspired me to start a career as a DJ, and yes, the journey was not easy. I have been able to carve a name for myself in the densely competitive world of “DJing”. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF MUSIC? My music is all about creativity, novelty, a blend of different languages and music styles. Mixing music and creating new ideas is a talent and I love to experiment various styles and genres of music. I try switching up my style often by mixing Bollywood with

Hip-Hop or Latino – Arabic mixes. HAVE YOU TRIED MIXING ARABIC AND WESTERN MUSIC? I’ve encountered diverse cultures and nationalities, which inspired me to bring out the same in my music. Arabic and western music have had the most impact, and the way the mixes visibly touch people. The kind of connection I have with the audience will is another level. FROM YOUR POINT OF VIEW, WHAT IS THE QUALITY THAT A DJ MUST HAVE? Music is a universal language that transcends through time and age, without any barriers. And I believe, as a DJ, we can make it our mission to

help spread the message of love and positivity. As DJs, we should be inspired to showcase our love for music to encourage and make people more aware of the music scene around the world. YOU ARE FAMOUS FOR YOUR MASK. IF THE WORLD ANNOUNCES THAT MASKS ARE NOT NEEDED ANY MORE, WOULD YOU TAKE IT OFF? I started wearing the mask back in 2018, way before life as we know it now, and if we ever go back to life without masks, it wouldn’t change my aesthetic. The real reason behind me wearing a mask is to shed light on my music and not on the looks. Wherever I am in life, it is solely because of my music, and that truly inspires me to push the boundaries of creativity and entertain the crowd. November 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 47

uriya’s name has come to be synonymous with blockbuster action entertainers. The South superstar who has given mega-hits like Singam, Ghajini, Kaakha Kaakha – all films that have been successfully remade in many other languages including Hindi – is known to set the cash registers ringing at the box-office. But while the theatrical releases took a massive hit during the past year under the global pandemic wave, the actor trained his sights on the OTT and here too, wowed audiences and critics alike with his acting prowess that catapulted him into the Pan India hero circuit. What’s more, the success of his Amazon Prime Video release Soorarai Pottru

After doing so many cop films it was certainly a contrast playing a lawyer. The body language is restricted and controlled. It’s not my comfort zone but we believe in it and we did it. It has added a new dimension to whatever I have done earlier. and debut Netflix web-series Navarasa, clearly showcased that there was more to Suriya as an actor than merely being a headliner as an action ‘hero’. And now the actor is set to hit a hattrick of hits in the digital space with his latest Amazon Prime Video release Jai Bhim. Unperturbed about the directorial releasing on the OTT instead of having a theatrical release, the actor reveals that the digital space has provided him with a far wider reach and audience base. Talking about his new film, Jai Bhim, he says “Every time a film is made, it’s a new journey. We don’t know how it’s going to shape up and how it will reach out to the audience. But this one somehow right from the start kept attracting the right people. It’s a beautiful film that’s made with a beautiful team.” Based on a true incident that took place in 1995, the courtroom drama has Suriya play the lawyer Chandru. Talking about the high-voltage social and political drama that has been written and directed by filmmaker TJ Gnanavel, he adds, “We actually have a wonderful journey as he (Gnanavel) helped me start my Agaram Foundation. And to see him direct me, is just too overwhelming.” He continued that the film releasing on OTT or in theatres is not the driving factor for him. Crossing the language barriers, Suriya adds, “We stuck to the real content. It’s a jaw-dropping experience for us so we are sure that people from any state or language will connect with what we are trying to say. With Soorari Potturu, we were able to tap new territories, new audience, and we definitely got a good response from cinema-lovers not just fans. Though the theatre experience is always amazing, I’m very glad that it’s releasing

on Amazon Prime Video, we have new audience and more territories too.” “Definitely it will also inspire a lot of people - be it young lawyers or a lot of young people - to have a different perspective that we see through this film. It highlights how judiciary and the police department should be hand-inhand to bring things justice.” He adds, “We as a society have to collectively march towards betterment. When we see a true story like this biopic, it shows hope, how people have stood by their convictions and how we can get better as people. It’s not about politics but voicing the right things that may bring about some change.” A far cry from his action avatar, Suriya admits that playing advocate Chandru has been a stark contrast from his cop roles. He says, “After doing so many cop films it was certainly a contrast playing a lawyer. The body language is restricted and controlled. It’s not my comfort zone but we believe in it and we did it. It has added a new dimension to whatever I have done earlier.” When it comes to choosing genres, he adds, “I remember watching an interview of Irrfan Khan where he says that any genre that I take, I deep dive into it, be it education or romance. So I try to deep dive and ask difficult questions. I am also enjoying the films that are coming my way now. So yes, it’s a hardhitting intense film that won’t be just an entertainer, but will have recall value. Take-aways will happen. I’ve enjoyed Irrfan and Ayushmann Khurrana films and I see similar beautiful writing happening in my recent films.” November 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 49

Stylist Jishad Shamshuddin who has had a Dubai footprint to his work, started with designing Salman Khan’s jacket in Race 3 and has styled, among many celebrities, megastar Mohanlal for Big Boss Season 2 and 3 . Manju Ramanan caught up with the creative artiste! WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOUR PASSION FOR DESIGNING STYLING? Back in my early 20s, I loved to dress up uniquely, I still do. I hate wearing the same clothes as everyone else. I have always been a very picky person. I didn’t like to wear tedious clothes. I would get a pair of t-shirts or jeans from stores which were priced around two thousand rupees mark, which, ten years back was a significant amount of money. I would then customize these newly bought clothes to my liking which would mean distressing them or splattering them with different tones and colors of paint. For denim jeans, to achieve a unique flavor I would often opt for the ribbed look and personalize it by adding some of my designs to them. This was achieved all by hand wherein due to the lack of tools at that moment in time. The painting of the jeans was mostly done by mixing the paint with water and using hands to splatter them onto the jeans as for achieving the textural details. I would make use of sharp stones and kitchen knives wherein I would carefully run them along the material to get my desired effect. Later on, I was able to acquire the proper tools like a hack saw blade. The best part of all this effort was the positive response that I would receive from my friends. While all my friends complimented me, my parents raised some concerns, like the damage that I was doing to new clothes and the cost it thus incurred. What they weren’t able to grasp at that point in time, was the shift of fashion into the denim era. I moved to Bangalore and spent a good amount of a year modeling for various people and brands but it was not my cup of tea that led me to start my career as a stylist, an e-com stylist for an online brand. Never would I expect I would work for Bangalore fashion week. I was the backstage stylist during the event and assisted many big designers during my stint there. This year I have stepped into something that I never dreamed of, acting! They say you never find your life passion, moreover, you discover it, and not just that but

you have the option of having multiple passions. I never imagined going from a model to a stylist to designer to have it culminate as it stands now as an actor. TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK IN DUBAI? For you to understand my work in Dubai, I should paint some context as to what led me to be a denim artist in Splash fashion. Upon arriving in Dubai, I was not exactly sure as to what I should do specifically. I was finally selected by this company Parmar Tailors who are the best suit makers in all of Dubai. To build contacts, I would try to engage the more established members of the industry and I met Raza Beig the CEO of Splash Fashions whom I reached out through social media. On our second meet I’ve shown him pictures of my designs that I’ve done in denims. He later texted me and said he’s not sure whether they’re hiring anyone but insisted that I go to their office in Marina and I went to the 22nd floor of the building. “Don’t give up on your attitude man, wear whatever you feel like wearing” those were his parting words. The HR asked me to come back after 3 days and I was back in the room with him, Deepak Malati, Head of Buying Head, Stephen D’Souza, Creative Head of Fashion Ali Namdar, DNM Head Rakesh who asked me what my intentions were for the denim and what can be done. I explained the various techniques that I do to the denim rather than just distressing. They provided me with two pairs of jeans and I had one on my person. It took me 20 minutes to make my designs and submit in front of them. The reception was fantastic. This is how my career there started as an In-store denim artist, then within a 3-month span being promoted to an In-House denim artist. After that, I was promoted as the designer of the street fashion team, and later on, placed as a fashion buyer. Not just that I got the opportunity to work on many projects such as the Fashion Forward Dubai (FFWD), their show, Iconic Youth Fashion Show, World Comic Con, Virgin Radio REDFEST Dubai, UAE Masala Awards 10th Edition, Denim Festival Tour -Mumbai/ Bangalore/ Hyderabad/Delhi —which was an amazing experience for me which kept me motivated to work. WHAT DOES DESIGN MEAN TO YOU? Design can mean whatever you want it to mean. It is a personal interpretation. Design is about communicating feelings through visual sensations and unique experiences. Fashion designers attempt to design clothes that are functional as well as visually pleasing. As human beings, we buy our favorite clothing products in part, because of how they make us feel. People don’t just want products that look good, nowadays they want something very unique and different, which gives them the experience of standing out in crowds. THE CELEBS YOU WORK WITH AND THEIR PERSONAL STYLE. I’ve styled Bollywood personalities like Sunny Leone and Randeep Hooda. I have also styled Mollywood personalities like Suraj Venjaramoodu, Innocent Sir, Kunchacko Boban, Devan, Mamta Mohandas, Unni Mukundan, Shanthi Krishna, November 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 51

Ahaana Krishna, and Honey Rose. I worked as the official personal designer/ stylist of Mohanlal Sir in Big Boss season 2 and season 3, and the official stylist for judges like K. S Chithra, Shareeth, Venugopal, Stephan Devassy in the popular show Asianet Star Singer. I started my career in the movie industry by designing a jacket for Salman Khan in Race 3 for a special song sequence. I also did the personal designing and styling for Mohanlal sir for the upcoming movie called Arrattu. Recently, I did the costumes for the Mollywood movie named Peace with Joju George as the lead actor, which is also the movie I debuted as an actor. I can’t express how grateful I am for being able to undertake the costume and acting in the same movie. Now, we’ve been eagerly waiting for a project with great personalities and leading actors from across the country titled, Mission Konkon directed by Mr. V.A Shrikumar Menon. And currently, I’m assigned as a personal designer for two renowned actors, Mohanlal sir and Tovino Thomas. When I style the celebrities, I would always give them different looks that would also reflect their everyday styling but I don’t miss to add my personal touch to the same. WHAT MAKES YOUR WORK UNIQUE? The most crucial characteristic to becoming a successful stylist and designer is to be a team player. This job is so much more than creating or assembling

outfits, it is also about managing personalities and often egos. And the need to seek out that necessary discomfort that always pushes me into new territory which makes my style and designs unique. I try to take as much of that as I can and interpret it through my work. It’s not a completely conscious action. I just try to make my work something that I enjoy, something I’m proud of, and that feels like me. When it comes to fashion, there are so many different ranges of styles we can mix and have fun with. Especially by merging cultures, climate, music, and attitudes, we can discover more unique ideas for design and I had an unforgettable time. WHO ARE THE DESIGNERS YOU ADMIRE AND WHY? Before I jump into answering I should explain my concept of ‘design’. I am moved by ‘design’ that, as a novel thought, changes our life and brings a newer sense of meaning, purpose along with new trends in aesthetics. The designer who inspires me is Alexander McQueen. The late designer is often regarded as one of the most influential and innovative designers of all time. For me, Design is an equal part of a thought process and an aesthetic manifested into a physical form. Although the inspiration behind each collection might differ, it is important to look deeper into who inspired them to begin designing in the first place. Many

designers use multiple muses for inspiration, but there is almost always one specific muse that originally inspired the designer to become the creative artist they are today. TELL US ABOUT WORKING WITH MOHANLAL SIR AND WHAT INPUT DOES HE HAVE TOWARDS YOUR WORK? There are a handful of names that comes to your mind when you talk about the Mollywood industry and its icons. The fact that I was able to get the coveted spot of working with one of the most prestigious and decorated actors in the industry is something I never dreamed of. I started my career with Mohanlal sir by styling him in MyG advertisement Campaign, directed by V.A. Shrikumar Menon sir, and a few days later, I got a call from Director Shrikumar Menon, and he told me that “Jihad, Mohanlal sir will be calling you soon, I’ve shared your number with him.” I was exhilarated. A few hours later, Mohanlal sir called me and entreated me to style for an award function, followed by Big Boss season 2. Henceforth I’ve been working with him as his personal stylist for the past two beautiful years now. The endeavor he has towards my work is astounding and is always ready to leave his comfort zone and try new looks. I am also grateful to his viewers and fans, who never fail to appreciate and state opinions about my works and selections. I am glad that he is comfortable in the clothing I choose for him. I am sure people all over would vouch for the fact that how stunning he appears in a Mundu paired with a kurta/shirt, but I have always wanted him to broaden his style in all ways within his best interest at heart. Mohanlal sir, as we know is known for his different styles and fashions. As a stylist, I got a better window to make him remarkably more stylish and this is mainly because of Big Boss. As a character in the movie, Mohanlal sir has certain extents in terms of dressing. Big Boss being a reality show, we didn’t have to face such consequences and limitations. It was an impeccable platform for me and my career. I can’t begin to express my gratitude and happiness to be able to work with a personality like him. When it comes to my styling, I mostly cover Western Casual, Boho Linen Japanese, Indo Western, High Street, Smart Suit, Retro, and of course the traditional Indian Clothing. When it comes to fashion, there are so many ranges of styles we can mix and have fun with. And I certainly never miss a chance to enjoy it. WILL YOU HAVE YOUR OWN LINE AND STORE SOON? WHAT WILL BE UNIQUE ABOUT IT? I can confirm that I will be launching my clothing line soon. As to what to expect with the line I’d rather keep it on the down-low and hear what you have to say when you get the product in hand. I was working on my brand for past three years and I’m so happy as well as thrilled. This was my long-term goal and the effort behind all this was truly humongous. As APJ Abdul Kalam sir once said “Dream is not the thing you see in sleep but that thing doesn’t let you sleep” so has this been for me. So, the wait is over and my clothing line will be getting in your hands by the end of 2021. November 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 53

Author, filmmaker, influencer and a cancer warrior, Tahira Kashyap Khurrana has paved her path as a strong individual by communicating about self-love, acceptance and embracing our individuality with all flaws. Marking the Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, Tahira shared a reminder for all women across quarters with her inspiring post. Last year, she joined the league of Kamala Harris and Sudha Menon; became a trendsetter who initiated a globally relevant conversation that included the likes of actors, musicians, politicians, authors and comedians, among others. Some of the eminent personalities featuring in the list include Kamala Harris, Vir Das, Shantanu Moitra, Sudha Menon and Nitish Kumar. The cancer warrior, author and mother of two who is married to superstar Ayushmann Khurrana has always something innovative up her sleeve. Here are some words of wisdom from the multi-talented Tahira who was part of the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night.

YOU ARE WORTHY! “Protect yourself Value yourself Nurture yourself I have gone through this route hence can suggest please do regular self-examinations and protect yourself from breast cancer.

AGE DOESN’T MATTER

Cancer doesn’t look at older or younger aged people. Do not become an ostrich if you feel something is wrong. The wrong only gets detected timely if you take action towards it. Action means letting the doctors examine you and to go through their protocol. YOU are very significant, worthy of adding lot of value! Never forget this! An early detection of breast cancer can save your life.

SELF - LOVE IS CRUCIAL!

Fighting the stigma around breast cancer is important. So is acceptance and self-love, through and post recovery from breast cancer. Empower yourself and others!

Through her best-selling book ‘The 12 Commandments of Being A Woman’, Tahira struck a chord with the audience portraying the relatable, goofy, quirky and candid side of womanhood. With a witty and humorous undertone to it, the book chronicles Tahira’s childhood anecdotes, her journey, her experiences and her battle against cancer. She has also addressed the issue of casual sexism in the book. An anthem for women and intrigue for men, it emerged as one of the best sellers even before it’s launch. The book became a runway success and Tahira, whose story of courage and survival continues to inspire everyone currently battling cancer, joined the league of contemporary female writers with a strong voice. Tahira’s short-film ‘Pinni’ also created a stir across quarters for the subtle yet impactful message of embracing individuality. Now, Tahira Kashyap Khurrana gears for her fifth book ‘The 7 Sins Of Being A Mother’ as well as her debut feature film ‘Sharmajee Ki Beti’. November 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 55

Luxury is a state of mind! …Says Komal Agarwal, Director Finance at ARL Tyres and the owner of the cricket team Toronto Nationals, as she talks about all things luxury and balancing that work – home life with elan, in an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye Whether it’s running a globallyrenowned company, owning a cricket team or taking care of family and home, it’s all in a day’s work for Komal Agarwal. Driven by the goals she shares with her husband, the leading businessman Amit Agarwal, and fueled by the love of her family, this Boss Lady believes that to pursue your passion is the biggest happiness!

Taking forward the Legacy

Back in our hometown, we had an automobile spare part store and my father-in-law always wanted to be a manufacturer and not just a retailer. Moving to Hyderabad in 1985 we started a small scale cottage industry, as time passed, by the grace of God and his hard work we grew each day which resulted in the benchmark created by ARL, which is known all over the world today. My husband Amit Agarwal now takes care of the entire company and I join him in looking after the finances. We also own a cricket team titled TORONTO NATIONALS at the league - GT20 in Canada, and I’m entirely involved in taking care of this trophy business from the start.

Balance factor

The second name of a woman is balance! Streamlining the schedule 56 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST November 2021

is important. We as women are programmed to balance our house, work, kids and social commitments. I think it’s pretty easy, just prioritize and you are set! It’s about prioritizing between comfort and convenience.

In Pursuit of Happiness

To pursue your passion is the biggest happiness! Maybe passion is the only drive to pursue your dreams. Talking about passion, as a family we are very passionate about traveling, and with my two beautiful daughters growing up in their teens it just becomes even more fun and enjoyable. We often make these short impromptu holidays as the situation permits.

Luxury is coming back home to happy faces, a meal with family and friends with love and laughter, heart touching conversations with your partner and definitely a good sleep.

Luxury speak

As Oscar De La Renta said, “Luxury to me is not about expensive things, it’s about living in a way where you appreciate things.” I would not say I don’t splurge! Yes, I do and I do it a lot, but again luxury is a state of mind! What I totally believe in is luxury is the importance of relationships in life, luxury is a stress-free lifestyle, and luxury is genuine happiness. Luxury is coming back home to happy faces, a meal with family and friends with love and laughter, heart touching conversations with your partner and definitely a good sleep.

Favourite Shopping Destination

My favourite shopping destination has to be London. I love everything about London, the place, the vibe, the air, and the feel!

Weekend Vibes

A typical weekend in my family is all about spending quality time with each other. It could be just at home with some good food and a movie or even stepping out, but it’s all about being together.

Vision for growth

As the Japanese say: “Vision without action is a daydream, action without vision is a nightmare.” My vision for growth for my company has always been to be one of the most admired companies to work for and to enhance value for our customers by providing world class products, and efficient solutions.

Advice to upcoming entrepreneurs

“Achieve capability, success will follow naturally.” To make it simple, if you are able to do something then you don’t need to run behind anything, success will follow you. Work hard until you feel success is following you and last but not at all the least, as we at our company always say and believe in “keep going!” November 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 57

ounder and CEO of NB Ventures, and owner of T10 Team – Delhi Bulls, Neelesh Bhatnagar talks to Aakanksha Naval-Shetye about the secret of his success and shares his idea of

From being one of the frontrunners in taking the Landmark Group reach the pinnacle of success, launching their electronics retail brand Emax and establishing it as a leading name to now heading NB Ventures as the Founder and CEO, Neelesh Bhatnagar is clearly a man with the Midas touch. Afterall, every project that he sets his sights on, goes on to be supersuccessful ventures. We recently caught up with him at his sprawling office and in an exclusive interview, the biz honcho talks about his journey and also tells us why luxury is more about personal satisfaction than being an ambition. The ace businessman also talks about his love for Bollywood, his passion for cricket, a zest for travel and delight for food. For Neelesh Bhatnagar, who first decided to come to Dubai 35 years ago, the journey has been one of marking successful milestones all along. But the head honcho says that when he first came to this land of dreams, there was no plan. “I would say that things happened, I got some great opportunities that I never imagined, and then I took those up even when there were few risks involved. But yes, I’m a risk taker in life and even moving to Dubai in 1986 was a risk back then,” says Bhatnagar. And he’s never looked back since. A Chartered Accountant by qualification, Bhatnagar moved here as the financial controller with Xerox

The man with the Midas touch Emirates and then went on to take the Landmark Group to great heights in the industry. He recalls, “It was a different Dubai back then. I have seen the city grow and change, and become what it is today, so it’s been an amazing journey for the city too. Everyone knew everyone in the industry and small place has its advantages, there’s no rush, no rat race. Everybody was happy. Today with the opportunities that Dubai is providing to make money everyone is in a rush to make money.” During his long run with the Landmark Group, he briefly left to work for another company, but returned when his mentor and Group Head, Micky Jagtiani, offered him a challenge he couldn’t refuse. “The Landmark Group had just been formed, the business was well set everywhere, and they wanted to set up the entire business in Saudi. This was in 1995 - 96. I set up there for two years. We met with unbelievable success and my two year stint became a nine years one. Once that was established, we realised that we were lacking electronics. Then I started working on the retail of electronics Emax,” he says. Started in 2005, by 2012 it was already one of the largest chain of electronics in the Middle East. “We had about 75 stores within 10 years. It was a great experience. By 2015, I had given 20 years to the Group and I decided to do something on my own and possibly have my own identity and that is the time I set up NB Ventures. I exited Landmark

Group and I started working on my own. That was in 2016 and its five years since,” he adds. A leading name in the industry, NB Ventures has under its verticals a versatile portfolio. There are restaurants under the Food Division, Fitness Clubs under Fitness Division and then there’s distribution of electronics along with him owning the T10 league Team Delhi Bulls. About his passion for cricket, he says, “Cricket is a passion for any Indian. That’s going good and its improving significantly year on year.” As for the Food Division, they have signed up with the masterchef Sanjeev Kapoor and run a successful chain of restaurants – The Yellow Chilli, Hongkong, and Pressman Sandwiches. “Then there’s also the cloud kitchen concept – a new way of business, where you don’t have a restaurant, but you only have a kitchen and you deliver. During the pandemic, it helped a lot. Biryani Box, Khichdi Tales are the two that are up and running under the Cloud Kitchen and we are in the process of launching a few more,” he elaborates. Bhatnagar also shares a strong connect with India and he says that the focus has increased in the past 5 years. “We have an office in Bangalore. NB Ventures is like a capital investments ventures as they are called. The investments in startups is a new thing here, but in India it is quite popular. It’s a risky game though and you need to be careful, you need to understand the risks involved. Startups only make money when they scale up, when they grow. That’s when the evaluation grows. I have more than 50 companies in my portfolio, so this is where we stand after 35 years,” he elaborates. Bhatnagar is equally passionate about movies and Bollywood and he has also been the co-producer on films like Akshay Kumar starrer Rustom, Ruchi Narain’s animated film Hanuman and her webseries 100. Films, food and cricket, besides his venture do keep him busy but he ensures that he spends time with family – wife Rachna, daughter Nikita, who has done a PhD in clinical psychologist and son Rishabh, who is looking at his own startup and is also working on gaining experience under the guidance of his father. “For me, family is very important and I have been a family man all through. With my kids all going ahead in the right directions, we do take holidays. I enjoy travelling, but not for a long duration. I get homesick after a week, so I don’t mind frequent travels but the duration needs to be short. We have a group of friends, and many a times we all travel together. In the last three years, we have been to Turkey to Switzerland, and London… I’m lucky to travel a lot,” he says.

Talking about his love for shopping, Bhatnagar says, “I love shopping but I’m not brand conscious as such. But we do like outlet malls and branded stuff but at good rates. No matter where I shop, there’s a consciousness for value for money. So, I am not a splurge person.” About his take on luxury, he elaborates, “Sometimes luxury is just indulgence because it’s a peer thing. But I’m a very conscious spender. And though I believe that if you have the money, it’s okay to spend it too, I don’t go on a splurge spree. Cost control has always been an important factor in any business and somewhere it gets trickled in to your subconscious mind. So that habit has been cultivated in my personal life as well. Neither me, nor my wife or children are spendthrifts. We are a rather grounded family.” He continues, “Luxury means a comfortable life and getting to spend where it matters, but it also is personal satisfaction and comfort rather than giving in to showing off to the world. So I think we are good mix of being grounded as well as having a luxurious life. I had never imagined when I first came 35 years ago that I would have this kind of lifestyle. Of course, I want to be successful but it was never with a dream of having expensive cars or a house like the one I have. I used to shy away from these things. But on my 60th birthday, my family bought me a Rolls Royce and the gesture meant so much.” His mantra in life? “If you have a Rolls Royce, great, enjoy, but if you don’t, never mind, and enjoy whatver is there.” And his advice to the budding entrepreneurs! “Don’t get awed by the perks. Build a nice team, take people with you and walk on the right path with the right attitude, and it will lead to the right destination. Try to do things in the right way, in a very passionate way, the rest all follow,” he signs off.

RENOWNED FILMMAKER AZIZ ZEE TALKS TO AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE ABOUT HIS AMBITIOUS INDO-ARAB PROJECT THAT WOULD BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN BOLLYWOOD AND DUBAI

of filmmaking, Aziz reveals that it was on the sets. “The process of filmmaking I learnt as an actor. I would sit in editing rooms, with technicians, and though I never assisted anybody as a director, I one fine day decided to take that plunge into filmmaking,” he says. “I was very inspired by Satya and my school of filmmaking comes from Ram Gopal Varma and Anurag Kashyap, so my very first film was a gangster flick Phattu Saala. Post this I got more offers and as cliched as it sounds, there’s been no looking back since.” The filmmaker adds that though he is open to acting, his focus is now on filmmaking. “The process of filmmaking is amazing. I don’t want to do anything else and there’s nothing else I know how to do (laughs) so I just want to keep making films for as long as I can. And this is just the beginning.” The filmmaker is also thrilled with the advent of OTT. “It has changed the entire scenario and been such a game-changer. Now as filmmakers we have the creative and artistic freedom to tell the stories the way we want, and this freedom gives us a chance to explore stories unhinged,” says the filmmaker. Looking ahead, Aziz feels that getting into Bollywood was the toughest part of the journey. “Now all I have is to look ahead. Filmmaking here in Dubai is still in very early stages and I want to put Dubai as a film hub on the global map someday,” signs off the director.
