Since your debut with Dhadak to doing films like Good Luck Jerry and now Mili… the industry and critics have been talking about your evolution as an actor. What is the difference you see in your own performance and what has changed for you?

To answer your first question, I think the audience will be the better judges for that. But, what has changed are the kind of scripts coming my way. I have been offered strong characters and I am grateful for that.

What has been a game-changer for you in terms of being taken seriously as an actor?

I wouldn’t say game-changer, but Gunjan Saxena (Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl) will always be a special film to me. I could feel the perceptions towards me changing after that.

What is the draw for you to do a film today?

Above the producers-directorcast-money involved, it has to be a good story that can touch hearts.

Oscillating between commercial formula films and middle-of-the-road cinema, your choices are unpredictable… aren’t you wary of these as risks?

Honestly, I haven’t been calculative. I take up a project if I see the conviction in it. I have just been doing the kind of films that excite me. If it helps me grow in my art, then I think it’s a risk I’d love to take again and again.

Tell us about your upcoming projects.

After Mili that releases on 4th of November in theatres, I have Bawaal which is helmed by Nitesh Tiwari along with Varun Dhawan. Then there is Mr and Mrs Mahi which I am currently shooting for.

Given your background, there is a lot of love and goodwill but there’re also times when people tend to be harsh in their opinions about you as an actor or as a person. How do you deal with that?

These are all chatters that I have become indifferent to unless there is constructive criticism. At the end of the day, what matters the most as an actor is what we do on set between

How do you deal with being under scrutiny all the time as a star... I try not to take it seriously. I try to remind myself that all of the scrutiny and all of these noises are consequences of my actual job. I love cinema, I love what I do, and I love acting so much that it’s a very pure relationship for me. And I just don’t let the noise cloud my judgement and cloud my intentions because I feel like I need to protect that relationship and make sure that it doesn’t turn into a toxic one.

English Vinglish, Lamhe, Naagin, Mom… the late Sridevi has given such iconic performances. If you could’ve done any one film from your mom’s filmography which one would it be?

I don’t think I would dare to attempt any films from my mom’s filmography. I don’t think anyone should because I don’t think anyone can do what she’s done.

Are you looking forward to doing a South film anytime soon?

Oh yes! I love watching the kind of cinema that’s made in the South - be it Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam. I would love work in one.

What do you most love about being an actor?

I love how being an actor allows me to grow and have experiences and move people through films and through my art. Make them feel things and give them a memorable experience when they come and watch my films because I think that making movies and watching it and enjoying cinema is such an emotional experience and it’s such a big part of our culture and it’s such a big part of my identity too.

What’s your idea of romance?

I really don’t know. I don’t think I have any idea!

With you doing so many versatile roles, would you say this is the best phase of your life career-wise?

I think this is just the start of my career!

Tell us about working on your father’s production Mili?

I’m waiting for this film to release, and I had such a great time working with him. I always have greater discussions. But I think right now our focus is on Mili and then figure what we want to do next.

What’s the one advice you hold most dear given by your mom...

Just keep your head down and work hard. Focus on your work and dedicate your life to being the best. If you’ve decided to do something, like becoming an actor, you need to give it your all.

MAJUMDAR listens mesmerised as evergreen screen goddess KAREENA KAPOOR talks about life, stardom, career and more

She’s the quintessential movie star, one of the last in Bollywood. In the age of social media and instant access to actors, she’s managed to maintain an aura of mystery around her. She once famously said that she doesn’t need to be on social media because she is all over it, anyway. “That’s so Bebo na,” her fans say every time they come across a statement of hers that no other actress would have dared to utter. Be it Poo from K3G, Chameli from Chameli, Geet from Jab We Met, Dolly from Omkara or Mahi from Heroine, her stardom goes way beyond the films she’s chosen or the box office hits she’s delivered. Speak to any film critic and they’ll bemoan the fact that Kareena is a good actress who doesn’t choose “good” films. They’d like her to do “cinema” instead of starring in the masala fare she’s known for. But the 41-year-old is content. She’s not one to have regrets. Whether she stars in a 100-crore movie or a flop, she’ll always remain the one and only Kareena Kapoor Khan. On the eve of Laal Singh Chaddha’s release, the actor sat down with us for an exclusive interview. Little did she know it would turn out to be a milestone performance...

In these twenty-two years, what is your main takeaway from being in Bollywood?

Talent is key. Being consistent and humble is important. And always be proud of your accomplishments as well as your failures.

How important is talent and how important is temperament when you’re an actor?

Both go hand in hand. Over the years, I’ve also become a calmer actor, and as you grow, your calmness also grows. I kept growing and now I am better than

what I was twenty-two years ago.

Do you feel like you’ve become calmer when it comes to picking scripts or caring about the box office?

I’ve always worn both my failure and my success very proudly on my shoulders. That’s actually what kept me going. Because as an actor, you must be prepared for both. And I think there are takeaways from both. There are lessons from both. So, whether it’s picking scripts, whether it’s performances, with age and constant ups and downs, calmness has just

come with it.

Where do you get your self-confidence from?

I think the confidence is in the fact that I know that I love my work, I know that I can do it, and I’m a good actor. Working with Aamir three times over, you know, making it different with 3 Idiots and Talaash how will that be possible? I’m always like, “No,it will be, and I’ll make sure it is.” So there’s also a little bit of that. You must have that tenacity within you.

Nothing lasts forever, so they say. That is, unless you are Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Are there days when you’re not confident and if yes, how do you deal with that?

Not really. Maybe I don’t feel good on a particular day or about something but that’s normal. But I don’t think there’s been a day that I’m not confident about the fact that I know what I’m doing.

Has this self-confidence been a practice over the years, or is it something that you were just born with?

It’s always been there, it’s not practised. Nothing is calculated - that is one thing about me. I don’t have four agents and two PR people telling me what I’m supposed to do. I’ve never been that actor. Like ‘oh why is this not there, why am I not on this cover, why am I not at this event, what am I doing’. ‘We need to do this, or we need to do that’. For me, nothing is calculated. I was quite clear and confident, even at the age of 12.

You don’t put filters on your selfies. When I came to Mehboob Studios for this interview, I sauntered in my jeans and my T-shirt, and I would’ve been happy to talk in that. But obviously, there’s protocol now. But otherwise, I’m happiest when my hair is tied and I’m sitting in my jeans. And I don’t know any other way.

You’ve never retracted a statement. I’m okay with whatever and now I’ve become boring, like how I was on Koffee With Karan.

Do you remember your slanging matches with Ameesha Patel?

Oh god, I don’t know how. I don’t even remember that part of my life.

Does it seem like another lifetime?

It feels like another lifetime. Everything was just so pointless. But now everyone has grown, matured, for that matter, even the media has. Somehow, it’s just different now. People also want to talk about more different things rather than catfights and things like that.

From size zero to the changes that come with motherhood, how has your relationship with your body changed?

Like every girl, when you’re in your teens, you’re like, “God, we all want to be thin, we all

want to look this way.

I wish I had thinner legs, I wish I had thinner arms.” Now I’m just like... I’m done. I just want to be happy the way I look. Because I think I look great. And when I look in the mirror, I look amazing. And that’s what’s important. I don’t want to have a six-pack.

Does Kareena Kapoor Khan ever look in the mirror and find flaws in herself?

No, because I’m not that kind of person. I don’t want to find flaws, I want to love myself. Because if I don’t love myself, I don’t know if others will love me also. You have to first start loving yourself for that. And, and I think I do well-even if I know that I have flaws or I’m no more than a size zero (which I don’t want to be and I don’t think anybody should be). But I don’t have long legs, or you know, I’m not a particular height, I’m like, it’s fine. People still love me. I am the way I am. You know, I am the girl who actually wants to watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and eat burgers and fries all her life. If that means that I’ll have to be a size ten or twelve, I’m really happy about that. And that’s the space I think every girl should be in.

But will that grey hair you’ve noticed bother you, or that small wrinkle on your face? It’ll never affect me. Because you’re as old as you look, and you’re as fit as you feel. You have to feel good. I feel amazing now, like after my workout, after I look, I feel I look good. So, I’m just like, I’m like, I’m as old as I look.

So, do you think movies have changed in that sense? Because there was a time when actresses would hide their age? Hide their age, hide their pregnancy, hide their marriage. They would do everything.

And you have actually announced it to the world. So, do you think the attitude in the industry has changed?

I think so. And I’m hoping that it will. It is high time that it changed. Today, it’s not just about being a twenty-something and getting a role and, you know, whatever. Because of the types of performances that are taking place today, I believe that you must be a serious actor. Whether it’s on the web or OTT, whether it’s in films, people. I think there is work for serious actors. Like now, it’s all about

how the game has changed. I just worked with Vijay (Varma) and Jaideep (Ahlawat) and I found the whole experience to be amazing. Because you get to learn so much. I’m dying to see Darlings because I know all of them are just going to be unbelievable. So today it’s not about that. And if like-minded people are thinking that way. It’s really archaic.

But you know how it used to be. Actresses used to sit at home after having kids. Now it’s no longer the case. No, now I believe there are roles for everyone. Today, actors are cast if they are suitable for the role, and if you know what they can bring to the table. Not just for their star value.

But do you feel like the era of the superstar is over? Even when Karan first introduced you on Koffee, he stated that you are the quintessential, bona fide movie star. We are in the day and age of accessibility. Stardom is very different and it’s more difficult for this generation. Because they have to be really, really good. Because anyone today can be amazing and be on top. So today, everybody has to be on their toes.

From donning the dancing shoes to sitting in the director’s chair - Bollywood’s ace choreographer Bosco Martis who’s had some of the biggest names of the industry dance to his tunes and numerous chartbuster dance numbers to his credit, in a career spanning close to 25 years, is set for his big directorial debut with RocketGang! It’s a dream that the industry’s numero uno dance director has been nurturing for over 11 years now. The journey to realising this dream wasn’t without challenges, the debutante director tells me as I chat up with him for our exclusive interview - The biggest obstacle being Covid playing spoilsport time and again! But overcoming all obstacles in true-blue Bosco spirit – with faith and a smile – the director says it’s been worth the wait! Thrilled with the overwhelming response the film’s name as well as the trailer has been garnering, especially among the children, Bosco talks about the big release coming up on 11.11.22

From being the top Bollywood choreographer to finally making your debut as a director with Rocket Gang… It’s been a dream realised after 11 years. How has the journey been? Quite a journey, I’d say. And who’d know it better… You’ve been a part of this journey too. From having this dream 11 years ago to seeing it finally coming true. But this number 11 has been so ironical… more so with the release date now – 11 / 11 / 22! The film was first supposed to release on 6th of May, but then it just came to be this date and it all seems to have fallen into place perfectly. The trailer has gotten such an amazing response from everyone, so we’re off to a great start!

What was the headspace like walking on to the sets as a director instead of a choreographer?

The one thing I was sure about was that I shouldn’t take myself seriously now that I’ve become a director. So I kind of walk on the sets and the headspace is like - keep it cool, keep it easy, it’s just another shoot, just another day. And you’re going to be filming a sequence without music. So you’re going to get people to act the way you would do like in a song. Just that you don’t have music. But in the back of my head, I was always playing background music. And I was trying to figure out how to make this the best entertaining film.

Yes the kids seem to have caught on to the song and even the name really well… That’s the beauty of kids. They just want to be entertained and they just see what they like and if they like they’ll clap and if they don’t, they’ll make a face that okay next. What do you have in your bag? Bring on the Santa Claus vibe. They are so pure that you get an immediate reaction. And I was stunned by how the kids were reacting… They loved the songs and visuals! The audience is hungry for this kind of entertainment, especially for kids! I felt that was a void that needs to be filled. And I felt that my film’s story is so powerful that I just had to tell the story the way I envisioned it. And here it is - a visually good-looking film, great story, entertaining film with fantastic actors. Also there’s great music - Amit Trivedi has rocked this for me. And ‘Nachoge Toh Bachoge’ is going to be the anthem for the next coming years.

Did you ever feel the pressure of expectations? Challenges along the way? I just had fun directing this. A director who had this coming for 11 years and who’s showcasing his journey as a director and he’s got everything going wrong for him. Three days before we were going to

start filming, COVID hit us. The sets were ready and we had to drop them. That was a time of great uncertainty for everyone including all of us involved in the project. But I am grateful that the industry, the studio… my stars, technicians, everyone stood by me. Right from Bachchan Saab (Amitabh Bachchan) to Hrithik Roshan… they all showed their support and Rocket Gang the title was registered and so was the tagline ‘Nachoge to Bachoge’. And from then on, there was no looking back. My schedule got over, and the next day I got covid. Then there was the second wave of Covid. And I had great support from the studio again. So all that happened and yet here we are.

Tell us about the cast…

We have a wonderful team… Aditya Seal, Nikita Dutta, then there are the five phenomenal kidsMokshda, Jason, Sahaj, Dipali, there’s Aadvik, Jayshree, Siddhant and Tejas... They’ve put their heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears… everything into this film and it shows in every frame. Even my team that’s been with me for the last 18 years. And of course Caesar, because he’s been my support!

Do you already have your next script planned?

You know I have the biggest of films waiting. But when I did Rocket Gang, I realized that this is bigger than any other film. So yes, there are films that are there in the pipeline. I’ll wait and watch who brings in their bit and wants to be a part of my vision. So, let’s see how it all happens. Yes, there are films. I’d like to explore and do some really entertaining stuff.

Which filmmaker would you say has inspired you the most?

There are so many of them. I’ve worked with so many. They are

all so extremely talented. Right from Bhansali Sir (Sanjay Leela Bhansali)… When I watch his Khamoshi, I am like ‘what a magician!’ Then I loved Farhan’s (Farhan Akhtar) space. I loved Zoya’s

tagline can never be diluted. I’ll keep my avenues open. So, whatever I feel best - a film, a song, reality television… anything that goes with my personality. If it suits my vibe, I will do it. So the avenues are big enough.

How do you always manage to get the right vibe and have a finger on the pulse of the audience, creating amazing hook steps and trendsetting dance moves?

are filmmakers who have really gotten everything - emotions, entertainment, swag, the style of filmmaking. As a maker, I felt like I should have my own swag, I should have my own style. Whatever it is, accepted or not! People have their own ways of telling a story and I felt that let me just tell a story and because we do that in a song which is about three to four minutes. And now you’ve got two hours to do that. So I think it’s a journey to explore and definitely witness.

What would you now want to be addressed as? Choreographer? Filmmaker?

I’ve never thought about it… Just entertainer I guess. Because we need to sell entertainment. That’s about it. And just make people, laugh, cry and let them clap, let them just forget their sorrows in tough times.

What would you say is Brand Bosco… Top choreographer, now director, you’ve also been a celebrity judge on talent show, so what is priority? I think as a brand Bosco-Caesar - this

For the last 25 years, before every song, I go to Mount Mary Church and I just pray and say, ‘whatever I do, I surrender this to you’ and I just feel this energy in me. Each time I feel like I’m going to shoot the first song of my life and it’s just the team support. But I believe I am blessed and there’s a higher power taking care of me. There must be a lot more talented choreographers, but I think there is a certain amount of blessings that me and my team have got and that resonates. Sometimes you use all the dancing, and it doesn’t work. And sometimes you have something, and it just becomes like a colossal hit. So, I’m sure it’s my mom’s blessings and her prayers that translate into good work.

What would you say is different about the Bosco today versus the Bosco 25 years ago?

He was a boy who was just fearless. We were less exposed to a lot of things, and we were just raw. It was like being a kid who is given a ball and said okay now score a goal. And he does it, falls, gets up and plays for the love of it. So, I think dancing was the first love. Back then people did exploit us. They would make money from our talent, and all they used to give us was a friendship band (laughs). We used to dance for the passion of dancing, not for making money. So, we danced for friendship bands, for t-shirts that were used for promotions and given to us. We just dance and there was money made out of us. That phase was a learning experience. Today we have wizened up. We still dance for passion, but make sure that no more dancing for friendship bands only!

One of the most preferred filming destinations globally, Dubai has also always been a hot favourite with Bollywood and the Indian film industry. Filmmakers across the world clearly can’t get enough of the stunning locales and the varied landscapes the city has to offer to be captured through the lens for the screens – both big and small. I met Mr Saeed Al Janahi, who as the Director, Operations Dubai Film and TV Commission, has been one of the key forces in not only making the city a leading production-and-filming friendly dream destination, but also encouraging local talents on several platforms through numerous initiatives. In an exclusive interview, Mr Saeed talks all about the 10 year old journey of DFTC, tells me about his love for cinema and also shares his most special Bollywood memories. Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

It’s been 10 years since Dubai Film and TV Commission (DFTC) came into force. How was it formed and how has it grown from then to now?

Earlier there was a department called the Location Approval Services that was doing this job, but on a smaller scale. So, Dubai Film and TV Commission was extracted from this department under Dubai Studio City and established in May 2012. After we became a commission, there was more authority, wider reach, greater variety of work and more avenues to explore and reach out to.

Interestingly, back then… just two weeks after we started, even before this was out in public and while we were still working on finalising the announcements, we got a call from Shah Rukh Khan’s office Red Chillies Entertainment. They told us that the filmmakers are visiting Dubai and they have a new project that they want to shoot here. So, it started on a happy note with Happy New Year, that was shot in 2013. Farah (Khan) was the director and they gave us one year to work on the project. So we had enough time to do it on a lavish scale. It was a very successful project for us. So that was the start. Through the last 10 years of course we went through so many journeys of Bollywood and Hollywood. Not only movies, but also TV series, documentaries, music videos, reality shows, and commercials. Today Dubai is a bigger market for commercials compared to others, because that’s Dubai, everything is fast! So it’s all done in 2-3 days. Dubai usually makes things faster and easier.

Has the process of giving filming permits also eased over the years?

Absolutely! We have changed a lot over these 10 years. Today, we are the fastest city in the world and you can get a filming permit within one working day – it is that fast! I believe no other city can provide this service. And its fully online. We are 100 per cent paperless. So you could be anywhere in the world, and you can still apply for your permit - ground or aerial! You can just focus on your project and creativity without having to worry about the filming permits. We are from the school of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and the Ruler of Dubai. He loves Dubai and has always encouraged these kinds of initiatives that strive to make Dubai easier, faster. We are also very closely linked to the other departments and sectors. So, if you have any project happening in Dubai, all the government departments, the private sectors, they come on board and they support the project. The city as

a whole understands and both private and government sectors are supportive.

What about local talent?

As this country is new, we are 50 years, I can’t compare it to Bollywood or Hollywood, or to Egyptians. All these industries are more than 100 years. We are still a new industry, still learning and constantly growing. So is the local talent, regardless of whether they are Emiratis or non-Emiratis. But yes, we have all the manpower and resources available right here to say, shoot a commercial. When it comes to movies or television, the makers usually have their own teams. They want to bring their own people. And I would say, yes there are more professional people and sometimes you find them outside because there’s more happening outside. Hollywood, or Egypt or the US. the volume of the cinema or shooting of the movies are more, compared to which we

have less of endorsement.

But you have also been encouraging talents here?

Yes, a few months ago we had announced our initiative ‘Ticket to Bollywood’ through which we aimed to connect local talents, script-writers regardless of whether they are Emiratis or non-Emiratis, with a couple of studios in India. We did that with two studios and when we launched it, the third studio came on board to support these talents. We are not just looking for new talents, but also encouraging established talents. So, once they are shortlisted, we will connect them to the studios in India. We are working on it.

What makes Dubai such an ideal and a favourite filming destination?

When you go to any city, first of all that city should be welcoming of the filming industry. And that’s what Dubai is. It is shoot-friendly and the process is simple and fast. To top it all, the variety of locations, the availability of the best equipment and infrastructure go a long way too. You get the best, most technologically advanced equipment here, so you need not bring it and that helps minimize travel and damage costs. There is no shortage of talent and that can be sourced locally.

Plus, the most important thing is how the city is known for its efficiency to issue permits much faster. So essentially, you save up a lot of

production money. So, Dubai is like a one-stop destination for everything related to filming.

Also Dubai itself is a like a big studio. If you put your camera anywhere, it will give you a different location, different taste and feel and so much variety of landscapes. No matter where you go, you can’t find the variety of so many iconic locations -from Jabel Ali to Hatta! You can cover the beaches, the mountains, desert, skiing if you need some snow. Everything is provided right here. That’s why we say

Talking to the iconic legend – Amitabh Bachchan. It was one of those moments which I can never forget… meeting this gentleman, this legend. And it was one superstar (Shah Rukh Khan) introducing me to this legend (Amitabh Bachchan). I have one special picture which is very close to my heart - of the three of us in one frame. That’s one of the things I can never forget

that the filmmakers can make Dubai into any location that they want it to be. Today we have so many projects that are shot here and also passed off as other cities, from Europe to India. We can recreate them here! So many movies, TV series, documentaries are shot in Dubai and passed off as other cities. And we completely support them because at the end of the day it is production.

The Indian film industry is a huge market… Yes, India is our biggest market when it comes to shooting in Dubai for movies. Second, would be Europe for filming commercials. Hollywood shoots here lesser in comparison. For them it’s easier to recreate everything back home than travel across

varied timelines with a time difference of as much as 12 hours. With India, we are just four hours away. We have atleast seven flights per day between India and Dubai daily. So the travel is easier in comparison. Also culturally we are very close to India. Since ages we’ve been together in this region and working together.

Tell us about your own love for the movies. Have you always been a fan of the cinema? Yes, personally I have always loved movies. I think a lot of us in our generation grew up watching Indian movies. We started with the legend Amitabh Bachchan and continue to where we are today. But yes, that was the interest. I’d never thought that

one day my profession will be such that I will meet all these stars who I used to only watch on TV as a kid.

Do you recall any special or memorable moments of having met any of them?

Sure… I’ll never forget when I met the legend Amitabh Bachchan! I was in India and I was invited by SRK (Shah Rukh Khan) on a shoot. He said come to the studio, I have a commercial and I want you to see how we shoot in India. So, when I went there, while we were talking, I saw Mr Bachchan come out of his vanity. Unfortunately, I was out of town every time that Mr Bachchan visited Dubai. So, I didn’t get a chance to meet him in Dubai, but I met him in India. And when SRK introduced me to him, it was something! Talking to the iconic legend – Amitabh Bachchan. It was one of those moments which I can never forget… meeting this gentleman, this legend. What is the kind of cinema that you enjoy?

I don’t like reading subtitles too much and prefer listening to the voice from the actor directly. That’s why I only watch three cinemas in the world, Arab Cinema - Egyptian, Indian and Hollywood. In Indian films, unfortunately I only understand films in Bollywood. The others I watch but I don’t understand and have to rely on subtitles. But I feel that when you read subtitles, you don’t feel the taste of the movie. The beauty of Bollywood movies is that it’s usually a mix of genres. Now I understand their words, their scenes more compared to old days. So for me I like comedy and action. And I’m still a cinema person. I do watch shows and films on other platforms, but I believe the movie should be watched in theatres. I enjoy going to cinema, putting my mobile on silent and enjoying the experience.

Which movies did you last watch in a theatre?

I recently watched an Akshay Kumar film and I also saw Vikram Vedha.

The filming hadn’t really stopped here even during the COVID pandemic. How was that phase for the DFTC? Yes, and I will thank our government once again that had so many regulations and precautions for filming during the Covid that we never needed to completely stop filming here. During the lockdown, we were issuing special permits just for the government to shoot. There were not many movies or shows being shot at the time, but there commercials being shot and there were several superstars who shot here during the time, because they know all the precautions Dubai is taking. So, we were taking right precautions to make sure no one be affected while shoot is going on.

Your new film Monica, O My Darling is up for release. How excited or nervous are you?

I’m usually not a very nervous person. Like I remember even before Guilty released, everyone was so stressed and I was the only one who was like sitting in all the screenings and watching us and feeling very happy. But yes, this time I think I’m a bit nervous because it’s been so long. Also, there are so many people in this film, I’m acting with such great actors. So, I’m a bit stressed… I want my character to register and want people to love the character and that’s making me a bit nervous. Because there are so many amazing actors, I don’t want to get lost.

Akansha Ranjan Kapoor doesn’t believe in taking the conventional path! Having made an impactful debut with a rather powerful performance in Guilty, the actress is now gearing up for her new release Monica, O My Darling! Thrilled that her role in the second film is a stark contrast from the intense role she played in her debut, the actress shares her excitement of getting to showcase yet another facet as an actor. So, while Guilty helped her earn that faith from filmmakers in her talent as an actor, her new release will have audience see her quirky side, she tells Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

You played a rather challenging role in your debut film Guilty and pulled it off very convincingly too. Does playing such a complex role so early on in your career give you more confidence as an actor? Definitely. I remember Vasan Sir asked me - Why did you take up that role to make your debut? I said, ‘Sir, so that people like you take me seriously’. Actors always hope that serious directors would have faith in them. So, I definitely think that doing a role like I did in Guilty eased things up for me in terms of directors having confidence in me and actually taking me seriously. The confidence that directors show in your work and in you as actors is reassuring. Like even the directors who I’ve done ads with… like Abhishek Verman, who repeatedly call me back for more work… that’s a good feeling to know, even though you’re one film old, there’s that faith. So, definitely in those terms of being taken seriously, Guilty was the best decision of my life.

But doesn’t it narrow down your choices, because now your next work has to raise the bar higher? True and false. No two films or characters will be the same. I guess there will be ups and there will be downs and I’m happy to explore different things. I did something very hard hitting with Guilty, but then I work on like a Monica, O My Darling which is a comedy and I’m playing a role that’s a bit mad and quirky. And if I pull that off convincingly, that’s a different kind of appreciation. So, you’re doing different things and you

can get appreciated for different kinds of work which is also exciting.

Which role came more easy to you - the one in Guilty or the one you play in Monica, O My Darling?

Now in retrospect, I think both. Because I put in everything in a character when I am prepping, I feel like both eventually were as easy or as difficult. It had a lot to do with director, it had a lot to do with the dialogues, the collaborative effort we had on set. I am a funny person, so that way I’m closer to the character of Nikki that I play in Monica, O My Darling. But I think we prepped so much for Guilty back then, that I think I was Tanu by the end.

In Guilty you co-starred with Kiara Advani. Wasn’t that a risk back then to step into the industry with a film where you’re not the solo lead? Absolutely! In fact, a lot of people asked me how I made that difficult choice. But I don’t think like that at all. When I read the script, I was like ‘Wow, this character is crazy’. If I pull this off, that’ll be amazing. So, I almost had blinkers on, I didn’t see what’s to left or to the right of Tanu. Having another actress in the project didn’t matter to me because I’m not an insecure person or actor. My worry isn’t that someone will overshadow me, my only worry is how much can I kill it. How much can I do with this character, what all can I bring. And the way I looked at it, I was like, ‘I have great actor with me, we have more eyeballs’. I looked at it as an advantage.

Your sister Anushka had made her Bollywood debut with a home production, didn’t you want to debut in a home production too? Never. I wanted the opposite. I manifested Guilty. In fact, my family was the last to know. I

called them after I signed the film. I think also times were changing by the time Guilty came out, there was more OTT, more character-based roles, more serious cinema and there were a lot of newcomers who came and the year before who did the song and dance and vanished. That wasn’t my plan at all.

With your parents (Producers Anu and Shashi Ranjan) being in the industry and Anushka being an actress, are films the usual table conversations? It’s kind of the opposite. We usually don’t talk about films. Like even if it’s me and my best friends, all of us

are from the films, or me and my sister, we don’t talk films. And I guess that’s what makes us sane, because then work is just one part and not the whole you. That’s what’s important.

Your choice of films seem unpredictable… 100 per cent. Even my next film which is going to be announced soon, is fully different. So I guess that’s the plan. Not to be in a bracket and just do stuff that’s exciting and fun. I want to love going on set and enjoy what I’m doing. I’m not overthinking it, or trying to be unpredictable. I’m just trying to see something that speaks to me and speaks to people. And people will have fun and I just want to go for it.

Big screen or the OTT, do the platforms matter?

Right now I’m in a good space with OTT. But my next film is going to be theatrical… For me, at this point, it’s great that my first three films have been on OTT, because I’d rather do a film where I’ve been liked and appreciated, and everyone’s watched it. Like I’ve a bunch of friends whose films have not done too well at the box office but the minute they come on Netflix, they literally tell me that they’ve got more messages now than they got when it first released. So in terms of that, because I’m a newcomer, probably my film would have been more watched on OTT as against it would have in theatre. I guess it worked pretty well for me that when OTT started picking up, in the lockdown is when my films started on OTT. But of course, who doesn’t want to see themselves on big screen?

What is that one advice given to you by your parents?

To just be kind. I think they can’t stress on that enough. Be kind and gracious whether you’re up or down. Be kind, gracious and work hard. And that’s it. Be on your path, be nice and work hard. Simple.

Actors always hope that serious directors would have faith in them. So, I definitely think that doing a role like I did in Guilty eased things up for me in terms of directors having confidence in me and actually taking me seriously. The confidence that directors show in your work and in you as actors is reassuring.
