Lulla, who is active on Clubhouse, has discussed Bollywood fashion and the challenges encountered while shooting Sanjay Leela Bhansali films. While we were revelling at Ashutosh Gowariker’s Jodha -Akbar song, ‘Khwaja Mere Khwaja,’ song, she was worried that the swirling dervishes’ head-gear stayed in place. This and more in an in-depth interview with the gorgeous designer who we are all proud of. In the midst of the crowded Dubai Mall, well -masked, hence well hidden, walked in Raveena Tandon and gave me an interview. The mast mast girl who is super slender and fits into clothes from her college days spoke on fitness, motherhood, lost love, moving on and how she is so thrilled that the OTT space has room for real and raw talent. In the local stories section check out real life romances of people from Dubai who have mixed marriages. HIGHLIGHTS

Highlights

a bird’s-eye view of show town’s happenings

RANVEER SINGH MAKES HIS TV DEBUT Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and even Aamir Khan… these are a few superstars who made their TV debut by hosting reality and quiz shows. They have had a successful stint with their TV outings and now joining this list is Ranveer Singh. The handsome hunk will make his TV debut as a host with a quiz show called The Big Picture. Talking about his small-screen debut, Ranveer Singh said in a statement, “In my journey as an artiste, the urge to experiment and explore has been constant. Indian cinema has undeniably given me everything – it’s been a platform for me to excel and showcase my skills as an actor, and I have been fortunate to get immense love from the people of India. Now, I look to connect with them in an extremely unique and engaging way through my television debut with The Big Picture. The proposition of introducing India to a ‘now’ generation quiz show sealed the deal for me.” We’re surely rooting for this one.

SURIYA’S SOORARAI POTTRU TO GET A HINDI REMAKE Two of India’s leading content creators and producers, 2D Entertainment and Abundantia Entertainment announced they’re joining hands to remake the globally applauded Tamil film Soorarai Pottru (Praise the brave). Soorarai Pottru is an emotional and impactful story of Nedumaaran Rajangam or “Maara”, played by Suriya, who sets out to make the common man fly and in the process takes on the world’s most capital intensive industry with the help of his family, friends and sheer will power. The film was partly inspired by events from the life of Air Deccan founder Capt. G.R. Gopinath. It was among the ten Indian films to be screened under the Best Foreign Film category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards and was also sent for screening at the 93rd Academy Awards. While the casting for the Hindi remake is yet to be finalised, the director of the original, Sudha Kongara, will be directing the Hindi remake as well.

JANHVI KAPOOR ALL SET TO BEGIN SHOOTING FOR THE REMAKE OF MALAYALAM FILM HELEN Janhvi Kapoor is surely picking up the best of the best when it comes to films. The actress who was last seen in Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl is all set for her next film which sounds equally interesting. Janhvi Kapoor will star in the remake of Malayalam film Helen (2018), which is a survival drama. The film will be shot on real locations. They’ll start shooting the film by August. The crew is currently busy with its pre production. Helen is a thriller and released in 2019 and won several accolades. Director Mathukuttty Xavier who helmed the original will direct the Hindi version too. Sources also say that the film will be titled Mili. Janhvi Kapoor is surely in the mood for some remakes. The other film that the actress wrapped shooting for earlier this year, Good Luck Jerry, is a remake of a South film called Kolamavu Kokila (2018), which starred Nayanthara.

RAM CHARAN BUYS A HOUSE IN MUMBAI

SOUTH SUPERSTAR RAM CHARAN HAS BOUGHT A LUXURIOUS BEACH FACING BUNGALOW IN KHAR, MUMBAI. AS HE IS GETTING A LOT OF OFFERS FOR BOLLYWOOD FILMS, RAM CHARAN DECIDED TO BUY A PLACE IN MUMBAI SINCE HE HAD TO STAY IN A HOTEL EVERY TIME HE VISITED THE CITY. RAM CHARAN AND HIS WIFE UPASANA HAVE ALREADY PERFORMED THE HOUSE-WARMING CEREMONY. A SOURCE REVEALED, “CHARAN IS DELIGHTED TO HAVE A BUNGALOW IN MUMBAI; HE FEELS IT’S HIS PRIZED POSSESSION AND SOMETHING VERY DEAR TO HIM. SINCE HIS TRIPS TO MUMBAI HAVE BEEN INCREASING SINCE HE STARTED WORKING ON THE RAJAMOULI-DIRECTORIAL RRR, WE MAY EVEN SPOT CHARAN MORE OFTEN IN MUMBAI.” WE SURE WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM IN HINDI FILMS.

Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Dutt to do a film together? Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Dutt have been seen together on screen fleetingly. Once in Ra.One and the other time in Om Shanti Om’s title track. However, as per reports, the actors will soon be seen in a full-fledged collaboration. Both SRK and Sanjay Dutt are superstars and their collaboration is sure to create a stir among the audience. The reports state that the actors have already started shooting for the film in Mumbai. The flm is being produced by Viacom 18 and will have them playing crucial parts. It has been tentatively titled Rakhee. We are excited for this one, what about you?

Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh’s next with Karan Johar is titled Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani Karan Johar announced recently that he will be returning to the director’s chair after five years. Treating his fans on his birthday, which falls on July 6, Ranveer Singh posted a motion teaser of the title, followed by Alia Bhatt and Karan. Titled Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, the film will be an entertaining love story. It’s the second time after Gully Boy that Alia and Ranveer will share the big screen. The film is written by Shashank Khaitan, Ishita Moitra and Sumit Roy and is expected to hit the big screens in 2022. Announcing the news, Ranveer wrote on his social media, “A special announcement on my special day! Presenting - Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani along with my dazzling supernova Alia Bhatt, directed by the genre himself, kaleidoscopic visionary Karan Johar, & written by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan & Sumit Roy. Coming to charm you in 2022!” The film also stars Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi.

ALIA BHATT SIGNS UP WITH A POPULAR HOLLYWOOD TALENT AGENCY After Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Deepika Padukone, looks like Alia Bhatt is too eyeing Hollywood. She has reportedly signed up with a top Hollywood talent agency – WME. William Morris Endeavour Entertainment (WME) is an American talent company which is primarily located in Beverly Hills, California. Signing with a top Hollywood talent agency means that the young actress is interested in a Hollywood outing. Alia Bhatt recently turned producer for her next film Darlings which co-stars Shefali Shah and is backed by Shah Rukh Khan. And now it looks like the actress is going to take the West by storm with her talent and screen presence. WME handles talents like Jessica Alba, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Whoopi Goldberg. So Alia surely is in august company.

WHAT IS A THREAD LIFT? A THREAD LIFT, ALSO CALLED A BARBED SUTURE LIFT, IS A COSMETIC PROCEDURE THAT AIMS TO LIFT AND SCULPT THE SHAPE OF YOUR FACE OR BREASTS. IT USES TEMPORARY, MEDICAL-GRADE SUTURE MATERIAL TO “STITCH-UP” YOUR SKIN SO THAT IT’S DRAWN TAUT. THE TYPICAL CANDIDATE FOR A THREAD LIFT IS IN THEIR LATE 30S TO EARLY 50S. THOSE WHO CAN’T HAVE A SURGICAL FACE LIFT BECAUSE OF MEDICAL CONDITIONS THAT MAKE GENERAL ANESTHESIA RISKY MAY CONSIDER A THREAD LIFT AS A SAFER ALTERNATIVE. THE PROCEDURE IS A MINIMALLY INVASIVE ALTERNATIVE TO FACELIFT SURGERY AND TIGHTENS YOUR SKIN BY INSERTING MEDICAL-GRADE THREAD MATERIAL INTO YOUR FACE AND THEN “PULLING” YOUR SKIN UP BY TIGHTENING THE THREAD.

SAFETY

Thread lifts are considered a low-risk procedure with minimal recovery time, but side effects of redness, bruising, and swelling do occur.

CONVENIENCE

This procedure can be performed in about 45 minutes, and, if you want to, you can go right back to work. Finding a trained, licensed provider is the key to a safe, effective thread lift.

COST

The average cost is between 250-1000 AED per thread depending on size and area

EFFICACY

The procedure isn’t dramatically effective as facelifts and last from 1 to 3 years. For best results, surgeons recommend combining a thread lift with other kinds of anti-aging procedures, such as ultherapy.

A wife is also a mother and nurturer and the spirit that brings order to a home – did you slip into that role easily? What did you learn about yourself? I have been a working woman all my life. I have always taken care of myself and loved the ones around me. When I became a mother, I felt it was an extension of who I have always been responsible, loving and a care-giver. It didn’t feel like a transition rather like an extension and expansion. I learnt so many things about myself. I learnt just how incredible the human heart is. Our hearts are capable of so much love despite any adversity and I felt it expanded multifold after I had my children. On the practical side, I learnt patience, multitasking and managing my time. I always say this and still say it - women are incredible in how they juggle motherhood with the rest of their lives. So much respect to all the mothers out there. Did you always have an entrepreneurial bent of mind? Tell us about your trading business? I have always been passionate about business and creation. From a young age, I have dreamt of being an entrepreneur. My trading business is based out of Dubai. We trade in edible commodities. I started this business after studying the market carefully, doing my research and understanding where our company could grow and sustain that growth. Slowly and steadily we have been consistently climbing our way up and I am very proud of where we are today. A creative soul who pursues his artistic talent needs a conducive atmosphere to flourish in. As a multi-tasking woman, how do you achieve that balance? I think multi-tasking is in the genes of women! I am a very focused person and I am clear about my goals. This helps me manage my time constructively. Also, I am passionately protective about my time - which is why you won’t see me at filmy dos and parties. I keep low key so I can manage and spend my time with family and focus on my work. Family is always the priority and then my work. Which is your favourite love story and why? Every love story is special and unique, so it’s hard to have a favourite. However, if I have to pick a film love story it has be Sadak. So poignant so beautiful, it resonates with you even today. What is your skin care and fitness regime? I work out regularly - this is something that I don’t compromise on. Not only does regular exercise keep you physically fit, it also helps you mentally as exercise releases

a t a y a n a a M endorphins. I firmly believe that if you don’t feel fit and happy from within, you won’t be able to take care of your family or work. So, regular workouts, daily cleansing moisturizing and toning of skin, a balanced leafy diet, makeup ‘only when necessary,’ and always removing makeup before bed- these are some simple tips I follow to keep healthy. Also, I try to think positive and be a kinder person. This only helps me be happy from within which reflects on my skin and body. What is your “me-time” like? My me-time is generally spent pursuing my passions such as cooking, reading, exercising, catching up with friends - all of these are small ways I show self-care to myself. You are amongst Bollywood’s biggest names and have had an eventful life. How does your family and home energize you? They are my rocks! They keep me sane, grounded and give me perspective. Stardom can rob you of these things so it’s important to have a family that keeps you balanced. My wife and my children are my world! I can do what I am doing happily only thanks to them. Spending time with them is the happiest part of my day. As an indulgent dad to three children, what are your dreams for them? Who do you think might take up your profession in the future? I just want all my three children to be happy and passionate about whatever they do. I am still acting today because I truly love what I do and I want the same for them. Between them- Trishala is a psychiatrist and is doing so well as a counsellor. She loves her work and I am so proud of her. Between my younger two, Shahraan is bent towards football. In fact, he recently fractured his

foot while playing. Right now, he’s passionate about the game, but I still feel he has all the makings of an actor - he’s observant, intelligent, loves dancing and can charm people with his humour. Iqra is more of an artist - her paintings are incredible and so beautiful. It’s hard to believe someone her age could paint so beautifully! What are your films that your family enjoys the most? Apart from the Munnabhai series, they also like Sadak, Khalanayak, Vastav, Dhamal, All the Best, Son of Sardar, Agneepath and Haseena Maan Jayegi. They never get tired of watching me in those films! Tell us about playing the antagonist in KGF? It’s been such a great experience. I love playing grey characters. They are so much more nuanced and complex to play and Adeera has been one such character. He’s larger than life and it’s been my absolute pleasure getting

into his skin and playing him. What are the kind of roles that attract you today? I love playing grey complex characters. I am fascinated by human nature and it never ceases to amaze me what we humans are capable of. Characters that push boundaries, that are quirky, that are flawed, even lovable- I love playing characters like these. What about your next production? What do we expect? We have a few projects in pipeline which were to happen last year, but got delayed because of the pandemic. Now they are back on track and we are excited about them! Any web series you have watched that you have liked immensely? Vikings and Peaky Blinders Which is your favourite love story and why? Me and my wife!

A power couple – where one is a huge Indian mega star and the other one, an astute business woman, how do you complete each other? And what do you learn from one another? MAANYATA - There’s so much from all these years that we have shared together. We have given each other strength in our darkest times. I learnt to never give up from Sanju seeing how he’s faced all his adversities head on and not given up. He always handled his stardom with such grace and humility, I learn what it means to stay humble from him. SANJAY- I have seen Maanyata stand like a rock beside me in good and bad times. She’s given me a family, who are my anchors in life. She’s brought nurturing love, care and strength in my life. I learnt what it means to be a husband, father and man from her. Tell us about the early years of your marriage. How did you both attune to each other? What were the hiccups and how did you work around them? MAANYATA - Of course there were hiccups! Every relationship has them. But what kept us going was the faith we both had in each other and our relationship. And if given a chance to do it again, we would do it exactly the same way and not trade a thing.

What is that you find incredibly admirable about your spouse? MAANYATA -His resilience SANJAY - Her faith and belief in herself and us You have been with each other through thick and thin – how did you keep yourself and your partner motivated during the toughest of times? MAANYATA - Faith. In each other, in our relationship and in God. It gave us strength in the toughest of times. And we knew we were always there for each other no matter what. SANJAY - That one thing that kept us going then and keeps us going till date. We always said to each other - this too will pass. Why did you choose Dubai as your second home and how do you find the city and its people? SANJAY- We both love Dubai! Maanyata has her trading business here and for her Dubai has always been her second home. It’s such a wonderful warm multicultural cosmopolitan city. The people here welcome you with open arms. There is no lack of anything here and so much exposure to different cultures cuisines and lifestyles for our children. We are happy and proud to call Dubai our second home.

TALES OUT OF THE CLOSET NIKITA JAISINGHANI STUMBLED UPON HER CALLING AND NOW SHE STYLES SOME OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL MEN IN THE WORLD OF SHOWBIZ. ANALITA SETH FINDS OUT MORE ABOUT HER LIFE AS A CELEBRITY STYLIST

She’s the woman behind the most dapper man in B-town -- Karan Johar. She knows all his sartorial secrets as she’s the brains behind what goes into his wardrobe and what get thrown out. But it’s not just Karan that Nikita Jaisinghani loves to style. She’s styled for everyone from Abhishek Bachchan, Arjun Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur to Siddhant Chaturvedi. And have helped them make a statement. Men’s fashion has been the fastest evolving branch of the industry in the last decade. Stars have gradually moved away from the classic tuxedos and tailor-made pants to eyecatching silhouettes and ensembles that have put them on the edgier side of fashion. Unisex prints, silhouettes and colours are the future of fashion and our celebs have taken to them wholeheartedly. Stylists like Nikita Jaisinghani are at the forefront of this mini-revolution. Talking about this shift, the avant garde stylist shares her styling secrets with us. Here’s how she makes every blazer, every shoe and every sunglass she selects the hottest accessory in town.

When did you decide to be a stylist? I wanted to do something in entertainment, not necessarily styling. I didn’t even know I could do this. This was just a knack I had. I actually studied animation. But then I realised that wasn’t my calling. I just got an opportunity to style one day and I enjoyed it. It was just random. Then I got a call to style Karan Johar. I took it up. I remember I went to meet him with a presentation and a mood board and even he was laughing. But it has all paid off very well. What are the pros and cons of styling Karan Johar? He is now open to wearing different kinds of silhouettes and brands but in the beginning he was slightly apprehensive about that. Earlier, he had restrictions about what colours he would wear, the silhouettes that suited his style but now he’s open to experimenting. Also, he’s aware about his personal style and fashion in general. I did my homework and I assisted him so I got familiar with his tastes. As for the pros, the biggest one is that he ends up looking nice in anything he wears. For cons, it’s the restrictions he has to what he likes and dislikes on his body type. But I can’t complain, this is part of every job.

Sidharth Malhotra

Who do you find harder to style--high on fashion Karan Johar or low-key Abhishek Bachchan? There is back and forth with both of them but you need to understand a person’s frame of mind when you’re styling them. You have to present the clothes in a way that they end up having faith in you. For instance, when I started styling Abhishek, he was not okay wearing a t-shirt or a knit with a suit. I remember the first time I met him, I said, “I need to change the silhouettes of the suits you wear because I’m not okay with that.” So it took us a lot of time, several fittings, meetings and back and forth, to come on the same page. Sometimes he would find something too flared but then you find a middle ground. For KJo, earlier he would only wear

Arjun Kapoor

Varun Dhawan

black but now you see him trying all sorts of colours. It’s all about faith. What’s the one look you’re extremely proud of so far? I gave Karan a Maison Margiela jacket to wear for an award that looked awesome on him. And one more look that I’m proud of is with Abhishek Bachchan. It’s his entire wardrobe for the Big Bull promotions. Sometimes when I look back, I wonder, “Wow, what was I thinking, I want to think like that again.”

She walks into the crowded Starbucks at Dubai Mall, wellmasked and happy about the fact that she can get away without the crowds gathering around her. Ordinarily, this would create a commotion of fan-moments and a deluge of selfie requests, for that is the effect the Mast Mast girl has on the Dubai crowds, be it desi and non-desi. As she places the order, the lady at the counter asks her name and she says Raveena. The lady can’t get it in all the noise, so she says, it is Rasha (her daughter’s name) and we settle in one of the corners of the buzzing coffee shop. The beautiful Raveena Tandon then, lowers her mask, insists that I order a cookie and we start chatting… What brings you to Dubai? We haven’t left home in the last two years and Dubai is a preferred place to come always. My entire family is holidaying here. How was the lockdown for you? That lockdown has had its pro’s and con’s and I feel that the pandemic has given all of us the value of time. Under normal circumstances, kids are busy with schools, classes and friends and so are we. This was a good time to bond and we as a family had such an amazing time with each other – we sang, we danced, we were together and that kept our spirits high. The pandemic is a sad lesson to learn for humanity but I believe that positive thinking saves the day, though the word positive isn’t a great word to throw around these days. (Laughs). Depression has killed a lot of people because your own thoughts surface and you have to confront them. Also, there have been natural calamities everywhere and we have to be prepared for the best and for the

I remember Saroj Khan very fondly. Once, during a shoot, there was this other heroine who came up to me and started screaming and shouting nastily and as I was about to react, I felt a hand on my arm. It was Saroj ji. She said, “You are bigger than her and more mature na. Take it easy. Don’t react.” I have always had the tag of being the mature one, though I have given it back to people at times too. INTERVIEW worst. Hope we grow compassionate as people and understand the perils of being materialistic. How do you address the issue of excesses? God has gotten us to the basics. My Dubai trip is my first trip in two years. I didn’t come here to shop because when I opened my wardrobe back home, I had brand new clothes with the labels up. We hadn’t gone anywhere in the last few years. I don’t need to shop and splurge. If you look at any of my interviews, I have always maintained that we need to repeat our clothes. What examples are we setting to impressionable minds that we have an unlimited supply of luxurious clothes, shoes and bags? They will then pester their parents for extra pocket money to splurge. I reuse all my clothes and accessories. In fact, since I still fit into my bell-bottoms from my college days and the fashion has returned, I use them even now. Reuse, recycle and reduce the wastage of cloth. I teach my daughter the same thing – don’t waste food. If you don’t want to eat, store it. If your clothes are not in fashion anymore, store them for another time. Do you see charity being the next cool in the world? I hope it is that way. However, charity is not just about what you give but about staying quiet about what you do. It helps to not have a zealous PR who reports everything to the press. I never retweet when people thank me for what I have contributed. I just save the screen shots to show to my dad. I hope and wish that the most popular stars of the future will be those who helped in the pandemic. You have a few projects on OTT? Tell us about it I call myself a “retired housewife.” (Laughs) and have been blessed to be still getting roles. There are two of them currently and a few more in the pipeline. I have shot a cop drama with Parambrata Chatterjee and there is one with Akshay Khanna that is a corporate story. Then there is KGF 2 and a suspense thriller in Telugu. I have tried to maintain a balance between roles. Much like, I did a Bade Biyan Chhote Miyan to an Aks, a Ghulam Mustafa to a Shool.

I don’t have the patience to pretend, to air kiss and gossip on kisne kaunsi party attend ki hai, who bought diamonds to who, who bought which purse brand. I am all about my family, parents, my girls, my work, my staff, my dogs and sincerely, don’t have the time for anything else. Mere se hota hi nahi hai. No fake friendships. I cannot pretend.

Have you found it tough to say no? No. I am not about political correctness. I am honest about things and back then when people asked me if I was dating someone, I would say yes, if I was. I walked out of a relationship at one point in my life and yes it hurts too since you have invested in it. But you have to get back on your feet and move on. When I see people losing themselves over a man or a woman, I feel bad. If someone is toxic, it is important to recognize that and walk away. A supportive family backing you, is always a boon. But you have to learn to value yourself. Like they say “Duniya Mai Aur Bhi Gham Hai Mohabbat ke siwa.” I have never gone to a temple to complain or bribe, I have always gone there to thank God for what I have and what I have been blessed with. I also teach my daughter to ignore nasty comments on social media. We need to focus on the good at all given points in time What about film production? I am a disaster when it comes to that space. I did two movies Pehchaan and Stumped and ended up getting duped. Anil my husband is

the producer. I am happy being the creative soul. In fact, I have written a story with Bani J, that has been with me for a while, that will be onscreen soon. I shall reveal details when the time is right. Around 1999- 2000, I remember discussing a story with Onir and he said it was too forward for its time. Now is the time to experiment with these things with OTT exploding into brilliant content. You are working in South Indian cinema too? There is no divide between the south and the north these days with talent migrating always. I acted in many south Indian films and I love to work there. I love the food, its people, its culture and the way they work. KGF - 2 is coming up, then I have a Telugu film with Anand Deverekonda, Vijay Deverekonda brother. In the past I have worked with Kamalahaasan jee in Abhay and with Venky in Taqdeerwala. Also, the Ghazi attack that starred Rana Daggubatti was our film. The OTT series you have enjoyed watching? From our Hindi web series stable, I watched Panchayat. It was a little slow initially and then I was hooked and am waiting for season 2. As for Family Man, I messaged Manoj and first apologized that I had watched it pretty late and then told him that I binged watched both seasons back to back! I told him that I have got a hangover now and need Season 3. He laughed so much! The boys who directed the series are really good. I watched Delhi Crime and then Criminal Justice and loved both of them. So many of your songs have been remixed? How do you see them? I love it. When each time a song of mine is remixed, be it Mast Mast, Sheher ki ladki or Tip Tip, there is a recall of the original. I like all versions of the songs since they are all tributes to the original. As for Andaz Apna Apna, I have heard that for the past 10 years they are planning a remake! Do you miss the dancing when you do content heavy cinema? “Reality shows mai dance hota hai na” (Reality shows have all the dancing you need). I have to literally tell them “Aur kitna nachaoge.” So, it is a good balance to do films that might not have dancing in them. But I have always enjoyed doing live shows. When you go to a huge stadium and the crowds are watching you perform, the euphoria is another level. The love that they pour out is instant and is a good high for any artiste. But I do not dance at weddings and I am careful about the ads I endorse. I believe, as stars, we have a moral responsibility to our pick and choose what we do. What are your films that your children have liked? I have made them watch Dulhe Raaja and Andaz Apna Apna. Rasha, my daughter though, loves watching Aalia’s films. The late Divya Bharti and you were contemporaries. How did her demise affect you? Divya and I did Kshatriya together and the entire unit lived in the same bungalow. She was a year or two younger than I was and I used to wake her up in the mornings during the shoot of Kshatriya. I was about to leave for the shoot of Aatish and in-between Laadla when she passed away. I told Kareem Morani that I wanted to see her and pay my respects and went to see her body in the morgue. It felt like she was sleeping. The attendant mentioned her by the tag number of her body and that is when I realised that this is what happens to all of us in the end. I knew Divya much before both of us entered movies. She was friends with my neighbour. An actress gone too soon. It was a life lesson for me. September 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 27

INTERVIEW

Embellishing

a Dream

The legendary Neeta Lulla speaks to Manju Ramanan on designing for the best names in the business, the influence of her mother to her designs and her favourite brides.

Your Ted X speech talks of growing up with your mom who was passionate about converting her sarees into beautiful outfits. Tell us about your experience of loving design and colours early in life? There is so much to say. My mom always loved to convert her sarees into dresses for me, be it frocks or tunic dresses for weddings. I was more of a tomboy and loved my Paithani suits, jeans, shirts or shorts. However, there were some sarees in ma’s wardrobe and those were my favourites. I even wore one to my farewell party at school and often later. I would wear sarees that she gave me as I loved them so very much. A hobby that became a profession. Did you start designing for common people and moved to designing for film stars? How did you cope with the change and was it tough? I started my journey of studying fashion out of a choice given to me by in-laws who wanted me to either learn cooking or tailoring. So, tailoring it was! I studied fashion and realised I wanted to be a choreographer post my studies. I trained under Hemant and Jeanne Naoroji and was an assistant choreographer for 2 years. As luck would have it, a member of my family was making a film and asked

me to help out and I was simultaneously commissioned a bespoke bridal order. So, my journey in both fields started simultaneously. I never found it tough to cope with both verticals. In fact, I enjoyed the very process of work and its challenges and went with the flow of things. You have been part of big musical dramas and historical movies. How early on does your research begin and tell us about each of these films you have worked with - how do you make the design historically accurate yet contemporarily relevant? The process starts with reading the script over and over again for the story to sync in and to start the process of visualization of how I look at it. Post this, I meet with the director to understand his vision so that there are two different creative perspectives. This is then followed by illustration and character sketches that start simultaneously with a lot of research in fabric, color, jewellery, design details and costume details from libraries. The creative design process starts and sketches are then rendered. Then, fabrication, surface ornamentation, sourcing jewellery and embellishments finally culminate into the production of garments. A look tear is scheduled and we put the garments on the actor to bring the character to life. For me this process takes 6-8 months depending on the magnanimity of the film and quantity of costumes which is never less than 2000 pieces. A fashion designer, a costume designer, home ambience artiste and a painter - what about a design school? I did start a design school in collaboration with Whistling Woods School of Fashion but gave up the partnership in a couple of years. However, my teaching journey started in 1989 when my college asked me to come back and teach. Ever since, I have been teaching and mentoring at various colleges and at present I mentor fashion aspirants at Hamstech in Hyderabad and on Hunar online. Hunar is about empowering women who are housewives and have domestic responsibilities. My number of students per year are anywhere up to 5000. You have looked beyond age and created beautiful outfits for the middle aged - how different and challenging is that from creating outfits for the young? For me creativity has no age. It is your perception, mindset, the way you look at life and handle situations. I have always felt very free and happy when I am designing and that can be for any age. I guess the happiness and passion transcends into the work and thus it is a manifestation of happiness, a meditation and gives great satisfaction rather than being challenging and age bound. Reuse, recycle and being sustainable is today’s fashion mantra. How do you manage it in an industry that used to thrive on excesses? As influencers of the industry, we are aware of the times

and its changing needs and we should be able to make people aware of the same. Reuse and recycle has been the Indian mantra and we have it in us to be sparing. Reusing age old outfits be it from your parents’ cupboard or grandparents’, symbolizes a mark of respect or love for what we have grown up seeing and admiring. However, I was able to bring this aspect about despite it being excessive in Devdas where it inspired many to go through vintage clothes and reuse them to make it look glamorous. You are currently working on Shankuntalam and you just completed Thalaivi. How different is it working in the South? Working in India has the same ethos and work format. As it goes whenever there is an emergency outfit required we have to adhere to it. Directors today are prepared for pre-production and work as per the script. But sometimes, there are situations that demand urgent requirements. Who are the film-makers you admire and have worked with who have a keen sense of fashion and the way they want their characters to be presented through their look and clothing? I am blessed to have worked with some of the most brilliant directors in the industry. The late Yash Chopra ji whom I worked with, had a fabulous sense of visualization on how he wanted his cast to look. The kind of colors he worked with, were simply brilliant though he loved his whites tremendously. He is the first director who I worked with who did not mind using whites repeatedly in his film. Mr Subhash Ghai who shot the garments with so much magnanimity was great to work with. I worked with him in Khalnayak, Taal, Yaadein and Kisna. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, a mastermind in pushing me beyond my creative limits, created the larger-than-life feel and a play of colors in both Hum Dil Chuke Sanam and Devdas. Ashutosh Gowariker, who I worked with in Jodha-Akbar, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se, What’s your Raashi, MohenjoDaro and Panipat, has always made me walk the thin line September 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 29

INTERVIEW

between adhering to research and keeping it well within its domain of styling yet look realistic. As much as they may not have known fashion, but they are masterminds in bringing out a very different statement out of the designer for the look of the film through their communication research and visualization, yet giving me a free hand. A film that didn’t do too well but was known for its outfits you created? I think unfortunately if a film does not work, everything goes with it. Does music move you? How does it stimulate your creativity? What is the kind of music you listen to while working on design? Music definitely moves me and stimulates my creativity. I don’t restrict to one kind of music. My pencil or brush or fingers move with music and I feel that I am in the enigma of a creative zone where the Zen of it brings out a sense of visualization. And I would like to create something in that zone that calms me like I am meditating. In the world of arm-chair stylists and Instagram and social media influencers, how do you see legendary and genuine talent like yourself keep up to the wave? A strong foundation is created by education. Creativity gets fortified with experience of observing and practice. The possibilities are limitless in what you can create and genuine talent helps you stay on top of the wave. But it doesn’t stop there. It is then the process of challenging yourself by moving away from what you have learnt and done before with passion and excitement. Thereby, you don’t just create a niche of your own, but open a wondrous path which is just your own to stay ahead. Tell us about your love for sarees and how the garment stays relevant over the years through designers like yourself. It is a 6 meter of wonder which I now play with draping and pushing it into 9 and more yards. When did I develop this love for sarees I cannot tell but have always loved seeing my mom wear these beautiful sarees and ladies in my family embroider beautiful pieces in their spare time. As I write this being a milestone that shaped my design sensibilities I am sharing this with you about my mother “Ma” A beauty in a crisp Finlay’s organdie saree in pastel color with beautiful floral motifs that she embroidered herself, she has a distinctive style of sarees that she wore at home. And when she went out, she was a Diva transformed, clad in beautiful georgette embroidered sarees or kanjeevarams teamed with sleeveless blouses. Each of her sarees was an aspiration!”

KRITI SANON

What is the kind of saree you would like to suggest to these actors Vidya Balan- Soft crepes and georgettes Sonakshi Sinha – Mysore georgettes. To Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma, Alia Bhatt, Radhika Apte, Taapse Pannu and Deepika Padukone, I would suggest a variety of sarees georgettes Benarasis Kanjeevarams, Lucknowi Chikankari and Kalamkari sarees. All these would work very well on them! Who do you think are the best dressed male actors and celebrities in the industry and outside and what is that you like about their personal style? In today’s time that is very difficult to say as mostly all look good. With stylists, they have access to a lot

of information on social media that influences their style statements. You have been heavily awarded including Filmfare awards and National awards, can you relive the moment for us? I have won 4 national awards. When I got my first National Award for Lamhe, I was busy working on Sridevi’s outfits for a huge international show,so I requested my husband to go collect it on my behalf as I was busy. But Sridevi explained to me the importance of me going to collect it and that is when I went onstage. I was a bundle of nerves and realised the magnanimity and the relevance of such a prestigious award and then, receiving the next three awards have been a moment of joy. I feel humbled that my work has been appreciated and blessed that I was capable of creating art with commitment and passion and work that will go down in history and be remembered.

Tell us about being part of the Oscars and being part of the top panel? It was a surreal experience when I heard about it. It was difficult to comprehend, but being on the jury’s e-meeting with designers and the governors, listening to their perspective on costumes in films was an enlightening and educative experience. Though watching 174 films to judge is tedious, but the spectrum of genres and the work I get to see of various talents from various parts of the world, is absolutely mind blowing. I am enjoying every process of being part of this prestigious panel.

What are your future projects? Currently I am working on a multi lingual project Shaakuntalam in Hyderabad with the main lead Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Dev Mohan. The film is directed by national award-winning director Gunashekhar Karri. Any memories of Dubai that you can share with us? Dubai is a city I love coming to and has memories of happiness specially with my dearest friend living there. I love visiting her and my other friends. Taking walks on the beach, eating out at the fabulous restaurants, spending quality time in company of my dearest friends are the fondest of memories.

INTERVIEW

Making an impact! Movies are meant to entertain. But while US-based Pakistani Indie writerfilmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal affirms this, she also believes that films are meant to trigger conversations, give out message of hope and birth ideas for a change. The filmmaker credited with having her debut film

Josh (Against the Grain) as being Pakistan’s first film to be on Netflix has recently released her new film I’ll Meet You There! A poignant tale that talks of intergenerational conflict, as well as addresses several issues that Asian communities often find themselves facing in the West. And as Aakanksha Naval-Shetye catches up with Iram, the acclaimed filmmaker talks about making an impact through her cinema. Excerpts: YOUR FIRST FILM WAS VERY WELL-RECEIVED AND NOW YOU ARE WINNING ACCOLADES FOR YOUR MOST RECENT RELEASE I’LL MEET YOU THERE… Yes, in fact my first feature film’s world premiere was at MAMI (Mumbai), so I’ve had a lot of support from the Indian community. And I’m fortunate that inspite of the struggle during the pandemic that delayed my film’s release by more than a year, we’ve finally managed to see it in theatres in the Middle East. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR FILM! I’ll Meet You There is a story about a desi American family, living in Chicago and about the intergenerational conflict that happens between a cop who has not spoken to his father in 12 years, but then he shows up unannounced. It is also about him and his teenage daughter who is a ballerina, and addresses the taboo of dance. But most of all, it is about the struggle of trying to stay true to yourself and still belonging to your community. SO WHAT WAS YOUR VISION AND THE IDEA BEHIND THE FILM? The story is an original, but comes out of a mixture of personal experiences. The film’s name comes from Rumi’s quote: “Out beyond the ideas of right-doing and the wrong-doing there is a field, I’ll meet you there.” So the message here is that it’s important to be willing to talk. Right now given the sort of political world we are in, people are not willing to talk if you don’t have similar views. But if the conversation is over, the hope is lost. WHAT MADE YOU PICK THIS PARTICULAR STORY? Multiple things. My first love is dance. So, the taboo of dance in certain communities has always troubled me and that was a very personal story for me. Also the way the general diasporic desi community continues to suffer post 9/11. You are always an outsider. So the film explores finding that middle ground whether it’s between identities or between two generations.

At 21, I backpacked around India which is very rare for people of Pakistani origin to do. I’ve been fortunate enough to see so much kindness in people and that’s where my hope comes from. On a daily level, I just try to be honest to myself. That’s why my films are honest too.

Humanizing people and understanding their flaws and nuanced characters, that’s where this film lives. For me the pressure was to portray the community in a fair light. That is the beauty of the film and also the challenge. That you feel entertained but also have that emotional connect and it makes you think. WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS AN INDIE FILMMAKER, BESIDES THE PANDEMIC? Well, besides film festivals being cancelled due to the pandemic which is a huge setback for us, we didn’t get to watch the film in a theatre until this July, after waiting for a year and three months. But the real challenge as a filmmaker lies in making the sort of films that honours the audience and their intelligence. In the film market, to make and distribute it, are both difficult. Also I will not deny that being a woman filmmaker and on top of that being a female filmmaker of colour in the western world is not easy. But the fact is that we have knowingly chosen a tough road in life, because we want to say something that would make an impact, so that’s the journey then and I’m okay with it. WHAT ARE YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS? My next is Wakhri which in Punjabi means Anokhee, one-of-akind. It is about social media trolling and will be shot in Lahore. There are a couple of more television projects, and there’s a project out of Mumbai that I’m very excited about. It’s a TV series, but because of corona we had to put it on hold.

The game-changer was the day I decided I was going to do this. My favourite role too, and I always say this, is the last role I played whether it was a hit or a flop. name on TV and theatre. And now his outing as Majeed in the recent release I’ll Meet You There! has him showcase yet another shade of his talent on the big screen. In an exclusive chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the versatile actor talks about his diverse choice of roles and dealing with the stereotyping of Asian actors in the West TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR MOST RECENT RELEASE I’LL MEET YOU THERE! This film is very close to my heart as it talks about a bigger universal experience that most immigrants go through no matter where they come from. Some of the films that have addressed the immigrant issue in the past have been more about immigrant parents having a clash with their new generation who are more westernized, which is very true. But at the same time there’s another story like ours where my character Majeed who is an American cop and has assimilated in the American culture is dealing with a different set of issues as a son, a father and being a cop. What this movie does beautifully is that it doesn’t vilify anyone. Rather, it brings together different point of views to the table and shares how everyone in these situations has a justified stand. The message of the movie is that nobody is at fault, but the issues are serious and we need to deal with them with sensitivity, empathy and with love. HOW DO YOU BALANCE BETWEEN DOING BIG STUDIO FILMS LIKE AN IRON MAN AND INDIE FILMS LIKE THIS ONE? It is in one word a challenge! How I look at it is that I am always going to be a student, never a master. I always want to keep learning. And I can’t learn if I keep on doing the same thing over and over again. I think as an actor, it is my job, my responsibility, not only to focus on making money or doing a 100 movies, but also diversify my palette as an artiste and try to have more offerings and learn from it. So that’s why I never

make any distinction between a big studio commercial movie or an indie film or TV or Theatre. It’s all about a role to me. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH STEREOTYPING OF ASIAN ACTORS IN THE WEST? That’s a good point there. My approach is very simple. If I read a script and feel like it is stereotypical and there’s no room for me to even be in a conversation about it then the responsibility falls on me. I can always say a ‘No’. But the bigger challenge is how to engage the makers in a conversation because sometimes stereotypes can happen not because of hatred, but because of the lack of information they have about your community. So for me the challenge is to try and show them a larger perspective. Sometimes these are battles that you win and sometimes you don’t win them, but if you’ve had a true conversation, they may at least consider what you were saying, if not for your role then may be for another character in another of their projects. So yes it’s always my prerogative and my privilege if I don’t want to do a movie, no matter how much money is involved. If it doesn’t sit well with me, then I’m not going to do it, that’s it. ARE THERE ROLES YOU REGRET TURNING DOWN OR TAKING UP? Yes that has happened. I won’t take any names, but yes there are times when you come in with a hope that we can make something beautiful and sometimes it doesn’t work out that way. That’s disappointing. But you know you keep going and you keep trying. It’s always that. Hope springs eternal. WHAT ARE YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS? There’s a lot happening! I have some movies coming up, The Window, an animated movie called Lamya’s Poem, which is about Rumi the poet, then there’s another animated Batman movie, and there’s Martial Artists. This apart there’s a TV Series coming soon The Old Man and currently I’m directing another TV Series - two seasons of it, so that should come out soon. So yes there’s a lot happening. Hopefully people will not get sick of watching me on screen (laughs). So, yes a busy and exciting year ahead. Very diverse and versatile roles. September 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 33

INTERVIEW

I was

missing my

Adventurous side!

…Confesses Divyanka Tripathi. One of the mostloved and popular TV stars, the actress surprised everyone as she unveiled a very bold and fearless facet of her personality recently on Fear Factor:

Khatron Ke Khiladi. However in a candid chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the stunning actress reveals that there’s not been any image make-over with the reality action show, but an unmasking of the real Divyanka, that had been lost in the kind of characters she’d come to be identified with in the past 15 years. In this exclusive interview, the

Yeh Hai Mohabbatein actress also talks about her choice of roles post KKK and reveals the secret of her happily married life with husband, actor Vivek Dahiya. Exceprts:

YOUR CAREER GRAPH HAS SEEN A CONSTANT UPSWING… You don’t always think about it as a specific career graph, but things are constantly changing and evolving around. I’m just happy that everything has been happening naturally and very organically. YOUR AUDIENCE SEEMS TO HAVE A VERY STRONG CONNECT WITH YOUR SIMPLICITY AND FIND YOU REALLY DOWN-TO-EARTH… Again, it happened naturally. The idea was to be honest to the work and hope people accept and like you as an artiste. But to be honest, that simplicity isn’t always perceived like that. People doubt your intentions when you are nice to them. The times are such that people find it difficult to accept goodness and kindness without any intention or ulterior motive. So, people have often doubted me too and been suspicious about my intentions, but over time they realise that someone can be just like that for real too without any hidden clauses. WITH FEAR FACTOR: KHATRON KE KHILADI 11 THERE WAS A COMPLETELY NEW FACET REVEALED ABOUT YOUR PERSONALITY… A VERY BOLD, FEARLESS AND ADVENTUROUS DIVYANKA! That’s the real me. That’s the one I missed being. I was very adventurous when I was a kid, during my growing up years when I was in Bhopal. But when I joined TV, it all kind of mellowed down. I’m a very strong girl when it came to my personality or presentation, but then I had to transform into this more docile person on TV and somewhere it became a part of who I am. So the real adventurous me got buried somewhere and was lost in the kind of roles I was doing back-to-back. This facet was masked by the characters I played on screen in over 15 years. I never got to revisit my adventurous side, in fact I was missing it. So it’s good to rediscover yourself. NOW THAT PEOPLE HAVE SEEN THIS BOLD AND FEARLESS SIDE OF YOU, DO YOU THINK THERE’LL BE A CHANGE IN THE KIND OF ROLES COMING YOUR WAY? I hope so. I had been getting a lot of offers before Khatron Ke

Khiladi, but they are the same kinds. Most recently I was offered a web series by a very big production house, but it was a run-of-the-mill character. And I gathered strength and said no, because it is not what I want for myself. Now I want to do something different and that’s why I wanted KKK to be aired before I take on any new project. So that people and filmmakers can see me in a different light. I’m keen on doing OTT for sure. I just hope makers can think outside the limitations of looks to cast characters. And I’m waiting to do something interesting for sure. DO YOU THINK THAT ACTORS HERE GET TYPECAST BASED ON THE PERCEPTION OF THEIR IMAGE OR LOOKS? Yes, absolutely. In our industry, the character portrayal of an actor is very much based on the looks. So if a girl is bossy, she should look a certain way, if she’s a homemaker, she should look a certain way. But in real life, the fact is that women are and can be it all. So people need to look at women differently and accept that there can be layers to a woman rather than a single dimensional face. Like people look at me and assume me to be docile, but the fact is I have been strong and adventurous all along. It’s just that Now you see a different layer of me, but all of this has always been me. There’s so much to a person but we limit the personality in the way we perceive them. WAS THAT THE DRAW TO DO KKK IN THE FIRST PLACE? When I picked up this show, it was not with an intention to change my image. I just wanted to relive the real Divyanka that had been lost somewhere along the journey. KKK was one of the only shows that I had wanted to do since it came up, but I never got the time. And when I finally got time, I felt like I was not fit enough for it. I wish I had gotten a chance to do it back when I was 18 or 19 and new in the industry, it would have meant something else altogether. But thankfully, I didn’t surprise the audience alone, but myself as well. I understood that it’s all in your head, your inhibitions, fears…

too. Working women especially should go a little easy on themselves. We should accept that not everything is our duty and responsibility alone and we really should stop being hard on ourselves. And partners and families need to be supportive too. AS A ROLE MODEL DO YOU FEEL RESPONSIBLE WHEN CHOOSING YOUR ROLES? Yes, I do and that’s why there are a whole lot of projects that I have said a no to in the past as well. I did agree to do a project like Crime Patrol that I recently anchored, but that was because it was a lot about women. But it was important to send a stronger message that is why I gave my inputs like providing helpline numbers. So I was trying to give a solution as well. Shows about women empowerment should be about how women overcome obstacles rather than highlight the obstacles alone. So I’d like to be a part of more such shows. WHAT’VE BEEN YOUR CONVICTIONS ALONG THE JOURNEY? I’m a firm believer of karma and also believe that nothing is permanent - not your failures, nor your success. So you can’t be too happy or too sad. Life is like an adventure, live it as it comes, and not take it seriously. Yes, I am serious about my work, but not necessarily about the perks or the outcome. I’m a very quick learner and I learn from my bad experiences also real fast. I don’t let them affect me too much. I also firmly believe that we all deserve happiness. Because of bad experiences, we become bitter and afraid to let happiness come in. We need to overcome that fear and take that bit of a risk for happiness.

YOU’VE ALSO GOTTEN MORE PASSIONATE ABOUT FITNESS? Not really. I’ve always been into it, but what’s happened is that today people know about it thanks to the social media. DO YOU THINK THAT WOMEN’S PORTRAYAL IS NOW CHANGING DUE TO THE CONTENT OUT ON OTT? Partly, but there’s still a long way to go. The thought process needs to change, not just of the society but of the women

THE SECRET OF YOUR HAPPILY MARRIED LIFE WITH HUSBAND, ACTOR VIVEK DAHIYA ...IS THAT WE KEEP IT REAL, THE LOVE THE RESPECT. I’M VERY LUCKY THERE. VIVEK IS THE PERFECT PARTNER! IT’S NOT COMMON HERE TO SEE THAT A MALE PARTNER ACCEPTS AND CELEBRATES THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE FEMALE PARTNER OR TAKES PRIDE IN IT WITHOUT MAKING IT AN EGO ISSUE. BUT MY IN LAWS ARE JUST AS LOVING, SUPPORTIVE AND ENCOURAGING IN EVERY WAY TO ME AS THEY ARE TO VIVEK. THE ACHIEVEMENTS ARE CELEBRATED EQUALLY LOVINGLY BY BOTH SIDES OF THE FAMILIES. THANKFULLY IT’S A VERY EQUAL HOUSEHOLD EVEN WHEN IT COMES TO RESPONSIBILITIES AND I HOPE PEOPLE CAN LEARN AND IMBIBE.

INTERVIEW

Not just a Raw and brutally honest, rapper Naved Shaikh better-known as Naezy, is just like his music that comes straight from the heart. No sugar-coating of words or starry attitude either, as we catch up with the famed and popular rapper whose life and musical journey inspired Zoya Akhtar's much-acclaimed film

Gully Boy starring Ranveer Singh. In an exclusive chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, Naezy the Baa gets candid about his struggles, achievements, experiences - both good and bad and also talks about his upcoming projects!

What would you consider as the milestones of your career? There were several and very early on in my career. Performing on any stage was a milestone for me back then, the performance at the music launch of Gully Boy, performing in England, Australia… But I believe that my biggest milestone is yet to come and I hope that I achieve it soon. How do you look back at your journey and struggles? I’ve had a long journey, lots of struggles too, but the only time, I look back is to take lessons from that journey. I feel that those struggles are what have made me all that I am today. The thing about someone who overcomes these struggles is that we never take the success for granted. So that keeps us working harder too. You value things like happiness, success, this acceptability of your talent by the world that much more, because you know you have earned it through sheer hard work and your talent. What are the lessons learnt along the way? A lot really. I have not had the best experiences with people and have come across many who have cheated me. I have also learnt that it’s naïve to believe and trust people in this industry out of just love or respect. You have to not take people on their face value, so just be smarter when it comes to dealing with people really. But my journey has also taught me patience and a lot

38 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST September 2021

28/08/2021 6:23 PM

of humility. Also I’ve learnt never to take decisions in anger or haste. How different are you as Naved and Naezy? As Naved I’m an absolute gentleman, very shareef, a home person, a family guy. As Naezy I’m a completely different person – I’m a stage guy. A performer, musician, aur main thoda angrezi ho jata hun in all the techno and hip-hop (laughs). Naved is Urdu, Naezy is English. What do you look at for inspiration? My own life, my own struggles, the area I lived in, my house, the society around me, the hollowness of the system, what’s happening around, and the fact that everything is not right and nothing is being done to set it right either. So many things in your life are not correct but nothing is being done to change it, so that inspires too. How can we make things right is an inspiring thought. My art inspires me. There’s a curiosity in me and I want to know what and how much can I do with my art, so that keeps me going and inspired. That curiosity is my inspiration.

Journey so far ! Naezy bursts on to the music scene with his debut music video Aafat! (2014) followed by his breakout hit Mere Gully Mein (2015) with fellow rapper Divine that put the spotlight on the Mumbai gully rap scene. Disha Rindani’s documentary Bombay 70 (2014) based on his life wins best short film at MAMI. The singer takes a break for a year in 2018. Zoya Akhtar’s acclaimed-film Gully Boy loosely based on Naezy’s life releases in 2019. Naezy returns with hits like ‘Aafat Waapas’ and ‘NY Se Mumbai’ (with Nas, Divine and Ranveer Singh). Naezy’s hits include ‘Aafat!’, ‘Mere Gully Mein’ (with Divine), ‘Bombay 70’, ‘Aane De’, ‘Aafat Waapas’, ‘Dhoond Le’, amongst several others, his album Maghreb, and his most recent single ‘Kasa Kai’.

There’s so much pressure with creativity and constant competition, how do you deal with it all? Of course there’s immense pressure and competition but, that is something I deal with easily. I keep quiet and let my work do the talking. I pour my efforts there, I keep quiet because I know I have faith in my talent and I know I’m way better than a lot of the others out there. I have full faith in myself and my art. And I work from my heart. Are you happy with the focus that a film like Gully Boy has brought to the underground rap scene in India? Yes, I am very happy that Gully Boy has put the spotlight on the underground rap scene in India, and happy that because of artistes like us there is so much happening in the scene of hip-hop there. I am glad that it has given a chance and inspired so many others to come to this platform and the scene is getting bigger. I am very proud of being a part of Gully Boy and knowing that somehow my life triggered such a change in the music scene. If there’s any one thing you could change about your life, what would it be? If I could change something, I would go back and the song ‘Aafat’ that I had recorded in a garage, my first rap song I wish I had never recorded that and never become Naezy. So what are you looking at next? Next, I’m now working on releasing my EP album and producing music. Also I want to create a bigger platform where more artistes can come with me and collaborate. Also there are plans of international tours and collaborating with international artistes, creating new production sound, new documentary, new music videos and creating something completely new and unique. Ekdum kuch cheer faad karne ka soch raha hoon (smiles). So lots of plans. September 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 39

What plans for MFN next season? This pandemic has put quite a damper on our plans, but we have some big things in store for our comeback in the next couple of months! We look forward to being back in Dubai and bringing forth our baddest event yet on 24th september. You featured in a music album recently. Tell us about it Yes! and I think, captured who I am so well through the video. I thought it was a kick ass concept bringing 5 badass ladies together to showcase empowerment in such a fun and unique way. Would you consider being an actor sometime in life? Honestly, it’s still a no. I’m not one to shy away from the cameras or the limelight, but I want to do things that involve me being my authentic self. What is your favourite food indulgence? Pizza for savoury and Nutella for sweet... I could eat both for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on repeat everyday if there were no repercussions! How do you motivate others to stay fit? Fitness is a very personal journey and I’m not one to preach... I honestly stay focused on my own path and what I need to do everyday to be better than I was yesterday, and if that motivates people along the way, then I consider that a great accomplishment in itself. Your own story of fitness is inspirational. When was the turning point? My turning point would have to be when I was 23 years old (5.5 years ago) and going through my first (and only) heartache. After putting him above myself for 3 years, I was finally able to divert all that energy towards my own self. The rest is history. Memories of Dubai ? Way too many! Dubai is like my second home. Every time I go, I meet some amazing people, see the most amazing things and places, and above all, eat the most delicious food ever! What more do you need? I love it. You have two very successful actors in the family. What is it that you admire about about them? What I admire most about dad would probably be his free spirited nature—the fact that he’s able to adapt to any person or setting and owns it each and every time. What I will forever admire about Tiger and continue to strive to learn from him is his incredible drive to be the best. Having him as my elder brother is the only motivation I need to do better everyday. My mom is my gym partner and I am constantly amazed by how she pushes her limits daily. was inspired by Mumbai

Born to a Maharashtrian middle-class family who resided in a chawl in Dadar, Dhaval Parab who also goes by the stage name D’Evil is one the most accredited members in the Mumbai underground hip-hop community. At 11 years of age, he was known for his poetry and started writing rap lyrics at the age of 16, when he was first introduced to rap music by watching telecasts of Eminem, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on MTV. In his earlier days D’Evil was formerly known as Hustler and had teamed up with Ankur aka Enkore to form an ethnic rap group called MUNKY RHYMZ. His first two solo singles Kadki in 2016 and Chal Bhakin 2018 got him fame. A creative powerhouse shuffling between acting (Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s ‘Freaky Ali’),

illustration(Mr. Doodlekar) and scriptwriting, he rapped the theme song ‘Baba’ for 2018-released Sanjay Dutt starrer,

Saheb Biwi aur Gangster 3. In 2019 he contributed to dialoguewriting for the lead roles and lyrics of some of the more popular tracks including Apna Time Ayega in Zoya Akhtar’s

Gully Boy. Coming of the back of few strong collaborations in 2019 including Mawali Qawali, Smoke, Wazan Ha’, Shot Deke

Gaya, he signed to DIVINE’s independent venture, Gully Gang Entertainment and contributed to the track Gully Gang Cypher and DIVINE’s debut album Kohinoor by being a part of the track called ‘Vibe Hai’. In 2020, he released his popular single Mumbai Darshan and was also a part of DIVINE’s latest album called Punya Paap for the track

TELL US ABOUT WORKING WITH EXCEL AND THE RAP IN THE MOVIE? I have worked with Excel before for Gully Boy which was an amazing experience. Due to the pandemic, I couldn’t connect much with their team nonetheless it was an overwhelming and amazing experience. On the rap, I received a message one day from an unknown number which turned out to be Farhan Akhtar, he then asked me if I would be interested in creating a track for Toofaan. He briefly explained the plot of the film and said that I’d get a call from Rakesh Omprakash Mehra who will explain the character to me which I represent in the track. When he told me that the film is about a boxer who lives in the slums of Mumbai, Dongri, I immediately jumped on board since I drew inspiration from the city. DID YOU WRITE IT ESPECIALLY FOR TOOFAAN? WHAT WAS YOUR BRIEF AND WHAT WAS YOUR INPUT? Yes, I wrote this track especially for the film, the character, and the situation. This is the first time I have experienced something like this. Rakesh Omprakash Mehra explained the background of the character, the plot of the film & the exact situation when the song is going to come on screen. They also called me to their excel office, and they showed me half of the film till the part where my song comes in. My only input was that I had to understand the character and the reason why the song has to be in the film. Things started connecting one after the other with the song when I started writing the song lyrics. DID YOU START RAPPING BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO BREAK FREE. WAS THERE AN ANGST THAT YOU WERE ADDRESSING? Yes, I think any art form is used for expression. Not only did rap freed me, but it also helped me understand myself better, it always made me a better person and it changed my life. Whoever I am today is because of what I do. I rap. Not only angst, but every emotion that I’ve had I have addressed it through my songs.

and doodles. That would help me imagine more and get some ideas for my music. WHEN YOU COMPOSE, HOW DO YOU PICK UP THE LATEST LINGO? I don’t pick up the lingos, I make them haha. But jokes aside, I only use lingos in my songs inspired by real life. Being born and brought up in Mumbai city, I have seen generations of lingos. Every lingo has a phase, it just naturally comes to you when you’re from the city. WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE SINGERS FROM BOLLYWOOD? Sukhwinder Singh, Shankar Mahadevan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, KK, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Lucky Ali and Richa Sharma WHAT ABOUT WOMEN RAPPERS IN THE INDIAN MUSIC SCENE? WHAT ABOUT REGIONAL LANGUAGE RAPPERS? WHAT STRIKES YOU ABOUT THEM? I think there is a lot hidden in the underground that people need to discover about women rappers. There are a lot of powerful voices out there and they are making their way towards being heard, very soon. In music language has no boundaries, India being a linguistically diverse country, voices need to be heard in every corner that’s why we need regional language rappers. Not everybody in India understands Hindi that doesn’t stop rap or Hip Hop Music from being created. India has a vast variety of regional rappers so don’t be surprised if you find a kid rapping in your native language. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PROJECTS? You guys will see me drop singles with music videos very soon and I’m looking forward to some collaborations hoping that they turn out good and see the light of the day.

WHAT MOVES YOU AND COMPELS YOU TO WRITE AND RAP? Everything around me needs to be alive but at some point I need to be left alone. I take inspiration from my surroundings, I see no difference in living and non- living things, I drive inspiration from everything. And if there’s something I really care about, I rap about it. WHERE DO YOU HIDE THE DHAVAL PARAB IN D’EVIL. DOES HE SURFACE? WHAT IS YOUR DIALOGUE WITH HIM? I don’t like to hide Dhaval Parab from everyone. When I’m out on the mic, I am Dhaval Parab. With my close ones I am Dhaval Parab. When you throw me in the recording booth, the Evil is unleashed. All I would say to D’Evil is ‘even though we are going the right way, let’s keep doing the right thing’. WHAT DID YOU CREATE DURING THE PANDEMIC? Toofaan was one of my main projects during the first wave and it hasn’t been very easy since there was no change in environment. I drive inspiration from my surroundings and this was a very unusual experience. However, if I would feel like taking a break from music I would indulge myself into drawing cartoons September 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 43

hen real estate businessman Iftikhar Yousuf, now, MD of Park Investments, went to Bosnia to look for greener pastures to expand his business, he met the tall and stunning Ema, who owned a fullservice Marketing Agency called Ebbe Comms there. The Germany-bred Pakistani businessman found in Bosnia, a slow and steady life that would facilitate his real estate business and ensure a work-life balance for himself and for the people of the world willing to invest in the country. Ema, a former model and beauty queen, pursuing her doctorate was far from thinking of getting into a relationship then. The hard-nosed businesswoman with rich experience in working with the ministry took up his project as a work assignment with her company. So, you can easily say that work brought the duo together and soon they spent long working hours with each other. Though Iftikhar was already enamoured of Ema, it was when he left and came to the UAE that she started missing him. She realised that she was in love with him too.

PHOTOGRAPHER: GM SAQIB

Iftikhar is born in Pakistan and hails from Kashmir though, is a German national. In 2002, he came to Dubai to start his real estate business that was booming here and eventually diversified into restaurants and more. Being a student of political science, he had predicted that the future of the world would be inclined towards farming. A road trip through the Balkans, with a stop over at Sarajevo seemed to be destined and Iftikhar decided to buy land there at the spur of the moment when he saw an advertisement. The duo is married for a year and are your proverbial lovebirds. Each complementing the other in terms of work, companionship and being a match of equals. “In Bosnia we live a slow life. We are surrounded by mountains and we grow our own vegetables and are into health and fitness in a big way,” says Ema who found her dream man in Iftikhar. “We met at an age where we were sober and started dating each other. We enjoy life together, are the best of friends and can converse for hours together.” Park Investments in Bosnia, that they collaborate on, is the best of both worlds. It is a gated community that people from the GCC can invest in and it has the best of natural resources, being in sylvan surroundings, with latest amenities And the story has only begun.

Living a fairy-tale! Aftab Ahmed & Zeynep Ahmed Marriages are made in heaven and Dubai-based businessman Aftab Ahmed and his fashion designer, wife Zeynep Ahmed’s love story and fairy-tale wedding is a proof of that, finds Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, as she catches up with the adorable couple and their beautiful children at their lavish home For Aftab Ahmed and wife Zeynep, it was love at first sight, followed by a whirlwind romance that quickly culminated into a fairytale wedding. That was 2005. Now 16 years later and as proud parents to three beautiful and exceptionally intelligent girls Isra Aftab (13), Mairaj Aftab (11) and Azima Naaz Aftab (3), the couple shares that there’s not one thing they would want to change about their life.

“From the moment I first saw her, I knew she was the one. I wasted no time in asking her hand from her parents and I am glad to have found a perfect partner in her,” says Aftab looking lovingly at his wife. That she is Turkish, while he is Indian is not something that ever mattered to the two or their families back home in Turkey and India, highlights Zeynep. “The interracial marriage, the cultural diversity didn’t really matter much, because both love and respect are universal,” adds Aftab. “Main Hindi bol sakte hain,” says Zeynep endearingly, and adds with a laugh, “I am well-versed with Indian culture, though I still struggle with the rotis if I ever had to cook. They vary between looking like maps of India and Turkey. But yes, our home is an organic mix of two cultures, though our kids speak Turkish, English, and Hindi is not often spoken at home.” Interestingly she has Indian roots too as her mother is a Kashmiri. “But I have barely been to India. Once as a baby, once to solemnise our wedding vows in the presence of Aftab’s family in New Delhi.” The couple share that they had a lavish wedding in Turkey, as well as a formal ceremony in India. “Our families have been most accepting of each other and it’s been a blessing for us,” they add. The two also bonded strongly over Bollywood. “I love Hindi movies and their songs and dances,” says Zeynep, adding, “Aftab is more into the old classics though, that love for the old songs he shares with my father.” The two admit that they did have their ups and downs too like any other married couples, but the fact that they stood rock-steady with each other always helped tide over all obstacles. “In the end all that matters is loving and accepting each other as they are and respecting for who they are, this we would say has been the secret to our happily forever,” they smile. We got married nearly 25 years ago. We had a very small wedding about 50 people, and we got married in a high-rise banquet hall in downtown Miami. It was a small and very intimate wedding and a beautiful celebration. We saved our money and went on a lovely honeymoon vacation in Cozumel, Mexico. SINCE THE TWO OF YOU BELONG TO DIFFERENT CULTURES, HOW WAS IT ADAPTING TO EACH OTHER’S WAYS? SYLVIA SHUKLA: It was not too challenging for me because I knew Neel for about six years before we married. We met very young and are both quite open-minded. Neel did not impose any cultural rules or beliefs. He always made me feel included and respected my own culture and beliefs. WHAT IS THE ONE THING IT HAS TAUGHT YOU? Be open and accept cultural values and differences.

For Love’s Sake!

WHAT’S THE SECRET OF YOUR HAPPILY MARRIED LIFE AND WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO MARRIED COUPLES? SYLVIA SHUKLA: Love, understanding and compromise are the most important ingredients for a good marriage. There may be some turbulence in a couples’ life. Small matters and differences should not become big issues. Always be open to new experiences together and support each other’s goals.

Neel Shukla & Sylvia Shukla For acclaimed Art Director of Four Seasons Ramesh Gallery, Neel Shukla and his wife Sylvia Shukla, who’ve been married for close to 25 years now, the vast diversity between their cultures has never mattered much. And assimilating both, their father’s rich Indian culture and their mother’s vibrant Colombian culture, are their three children Neil Dimitri, Joaquim Franco, Emma Gabrilla, who are truly global citizens in many ways. In an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the Dubai-based entrepreneur power-couple talks about their journey together HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET? WAS IT LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT? NEEL SHUKLA: We met at Bloomingdales in Miami. I was working for Ralph Lauren home line and Sylvia was working at cosmetics. It was love at 46 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST September 2021

“I am sure INTERVIEW

Dubai will do

wonders to my

l a c i s u m urney,” jo says Shweta Subram the voice of Jalebi Baby and a Dubai girl. Hereʼs a candid chat with the girl who went to Canada when her parents emigrated there but the city of lights pulled her back to where she belongs. In conversation with Manju Ramanan DID YOU START YOUR MUSICAL JOURNEY IN DUBAI? TELL US ABOUT GROWING UP HERE? Dubai played an important role as my vocal training started here during my childhood years. I won my first national level competition, when I represented my school, The Indian High School, at a competition organized by Dubai Arts Lovers Association (DALA). I have very fond memories of growing up in Dubai, from going swimming at Al Nasr Leisureland to shopping at Burjuman Mall and enjoying Indian delicacies at Kamath restaurant. I have had amazing times with my family and friends here. We also traveled a lot, especially since Dubai is so well connected to the world. Even after leaving this beautiful city, I always felt connected to it and longed to come back here. YOUR PARENTS MOVED TO CANADA THEN, HOW DID YOU TAKE TO THE SHIFT? To be honest, I hated it at first. I had to build a new set of friends and adjust to a whole new environment. But eventually I got used to it, and slowly Canada became home. However, my love and fondness for Dubai never went away. HOW DID CANADA ENHANCE YOUR MUSICAL SKILLS? I continued singing in school events and community functions, although as a hobby. It was when I won a North America wide singing competition organized by Sangam Kala Group, I decided to experiment with making a career through music. It has been a roller coaster ride since. Being in Canada also exposed me to musicians of various genres and helped me get into the “Urban Desi” music scene which is what I would classify my first two singles, Jee Le and Ajooba, as. So, these various experiences in Canada helped me grow as a musician. I also continue to learn from my guruji, Sunil Borgaonkar through Skype. AYUSHMANN KHURRANA FOLLOWS YOU AND THEN YOU SANG A SONG FOR HIS MOVIE. TELL US ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE? I had done a cover of Ayushmann Khurrana’s Mitti Di Khushboo. His team really liked my rendition and felt that my voice would go very well for his upcoming movie at the time, Hawaizaada. I was at the airport in Mumbai when I got the call, so it was serendipity. Working with his team was a great experience. Ayushmann is extremely down to earth and was a pleasure to work with.

HOW DID JALEBI BABY HAPPEN AND THE ENSUING EUPHORIA? Jalebi Baby happened out of the blue when Tesher reached out to me and told me he wanted to use my voice for some background vocals. I sent over my voice, while giving him multiple options to work with. Before I knew it, the song was released where my voice was actually used as the hook of Jalebi Baby. The euphoria associated with this song has been surreal. I get daily messages where people want to know if I am the singer of Jalebi Baby. YOUR RETURN TO DUBAI STORY AND YOUR CAREER TODAY? I returned to Dubai just over a year ago, with plans to spend time in Mumbai and work on more music. However, the pandemic halted many of those plans. However, as a bittersweet experience Jalebi Baby happened with Tesher. I am excited to be in Dubai, as I see a lot of positive energy and appreciation for various genres of music. The Indian scene is also very vibrant here, so I remain optimistic that Dubai will do wonders to my musical journey. WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL QUALITIES OF AN INDEPENDENT MUSICIAN? Confidence and perseverance. It’s a non-conventional path with a lot of obstacles. The desire to succeed must be very strong and you cannot lose focus. You also need to define what you stand for and create a niche for yourself to be successful as an independent musician. HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR LOWS? I am very social person. I have found that being alone when I feel low makes it worse. What has helped me is opening up to at least one trusted friend. I would tell everyone to not bottle up their frustrations and seek a friend that you can talk to. When I feel low, I also try to find an escape by going shopping or watching a movie though I have found opening up to someone you trust is the best thing you can do. WHAT PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? I would love to sing in Arabic as well as for Indian films, be it Bollywood, Kollywood, Mollywood or others. Besides that, I will continue to focus on my original content as well as collaborations with other talented musicians. I really cannot see a life outside of music.
