RANVEER SINGH IS SLB’S BAIJU BAWRA Sanjay Leela Bhansali may be busy with the post production of his next Gangubai Kathiawadi, but that hasn’t stopped him from planning his next – Baiju Bawra. The project has been on the director’s wishlist for a long time. Rumours were rife that Ranbir Kapoor who made his debut with SLB in Saawariya will reunite with the filmmaker for this musical. However, Ranbir Kapoor turned down the offer. Later Kartik Aaryan’s name too was thrown in the ring. But it looks like Kartik was in talks with SLB for some other film because the latest reports say it’s none other than SLB’s blueeyed boy Ranveer Singh who has been finalised for the dream project. After Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Bajirao Mastani Ram-Leela Padmaavat, Ranveer and and Padmaavat SLB will team up for the fourth time. Baiju Bawra is said to have an ensemble cast comprising stalwarts like Ajay Devgn and Bhatt. Deepika Padukone Alia Bhatt too was said to be in the film but reportedly parted ways as SLB wasn’t willing to pay her the same remuneration as her husband.

IS IBRAHIM ALI KHAN ASSISTING KARAN JOHAR IN ROCKY AUR RANI KI PREM KAHANI?

SAIF ALI KHAN’S DAUGHTER SARA ALI KHAN HAS SUCCESSFULLY ESTABLISHED HERSELF IN BOLLYWOOD AND HIS SON IBRAHIM ALI KHAN IS ALSO MAKING INROADS INTO THE INDUSTRY. RUMOUR HAS IT THAT IBRAHIM IS ALL SET TO GET SOME EXPERIENCE BEHIND THE CAMERA WITH KARAN JOHAR. A SOURCE HAD REVEALED THAT THE STAR KID IS SET TO DEBUT AS AN ASSISTANT DIRECTOR WITH ROCKY AUR RANI KI PREM KAHANI. THIS PROJECT MARKS KARAN’S RETURN TO DIRECTION AND FEATURES RANVEER SINGH AND ALIA BHATT IN LEAD ROLES.

ZOYA AKHTAR SET TO LAUNCH SUHANA KHAN & KHUSHI KAPOOR There has been a lot of speculation around Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter, Suhana Khan’s acting debut. Suhana has been doing theatre for a while now and was also part of a short film that surfaced on the internet last year. There were reports of Karan Johar looking to launch her with a film but rumour has it that Zoya Akhtar beat him to it. A report on an online portal suggests that Suhana will be seen in Zoya’s directorial venture that will be based on Archie comics. Furthermore, speculation is that Sridevi and Boney Kapoor’s younger daughter, Khushi Kapoor will also make her acting debut in the same project. Casting them as BFFs Betty and Veronica, Zoya is all set to bring some young and refreshing talent to the OTT platforms. While the report says this casting is finalised, the actors for Archie and Jughead are still not decided upon. A source did add that Ibrahim Ali Khan is being considered for Archie but there is no definitive news on the same as of now. Looks interesting alright!

THE IMMORTAL ASHWATTHAMA STARRING VICKY KAUSHAL SHELVED In the last couple of months, Vicky Kaushal had been giving us glimpse of his preparation for his next big role – The Immortal Ashwatthama. He’s been working hard in the gym for this superhero film and had been learning archery and horse-riding. We now hear that the VFX-heavy film has been shelved. The reason behind this drastic decision apparently is budget constraints. The sci-fi flick has a huge budget. But it seems owing to the current situation, the producers aren’t getting the required finance. Ashwatthama has remained one of the most anticipated films in showbiz. The film was going to be directed by Aditya Dhar who directed Vicky in Uri: The Surgical Strike. Vicky Kaushal will now focus on his next, where he plays Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. The actor even has Mr Lele in his kitty which stars Bhumi Pednekar and Kiara Advani.

expert advice BHUMI PEDNEKAR TO TEAM UP WITH SHAHID KAPOOR Ali Abbas Zafar who’s known for films like Tiger Zinda Hai, Sultan and the OTT release Tandav, is gearing up for his next film which will star Shahid Kapoor in the lead. It looks like the filmmaker has found his leading lady too. Bhumi Pednekar will be seen opposite Shahid Kapoor. The film is going to be a remake of a Hollywood thriller. Bhumi Pednekar recently finished shooting a schedule of Raksha Bandhan with Akshay Kumar. Meanwhile, Shahid Kapoor has finished shooting for his web debut helmed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK. Looks like an interesting project.

KARAN JOHAR’S NEXT PRODUCTION TO BE BASED ON THE LIFE OF FREEDOM FIGHTER USHA MEHTA With Shershaah, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has tasted success with a biopic for the fourth time after Raazi, Kesari and Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl. Dharma is all set to make yet another biopic and reports suggest it’ll be about a freedom fighter this time around. A report suggests that the production house has acquired rights to make a film on Usha Mehta’s life. She ran an underground radio channel during the Quit India Movement against the British, called the Congress Radio. A source said, “Dharma Productions has been developing a number of scripts, and one of them is based on Usha Mehta. The said script has been in the making for the last few years, with the production house carrying out extensive research about her.” The report further stated that the script is based on a play called Khar Khar written by Amatya Goradia and Pritish Sodha. The source further revealed, “Karan Johar is looking at roping in Kannan Iyer to direct the venture. As for adapting the play for the screen, Darab Farooqui is working on it.” Interesting much!

KRITI SANON TO TAKE UP DIRT BIKING FOR GANAPATH Kriti Sanon is currently basking in the praise her recent release, Mimi has been showered with. But the diva has no time to pop the bubbly. Kriti is currently shooting for Adipurush – a hugely mounted film starring Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan. What also keeps the actress busy is the fact that she is training for Ganapath. The film is an action flick by Vikas Bahl and it reunites her with her first co-star Tiger Shroff. Kriti won’t be a damsel in distress but will be kicking some ass alongside Tiger. What’s more, we’ve heard that Kriti is going to do bike stunts in the film and is learning to ride a dirt bike for the same. The film will go on floors sometime this year and looks like she’s wasting no time to prepare for her role. Kriti has a bunch of other projects – Bachchan Pandey with Akshay Kumar, Bhediya with Varun Dhawan, Shehzada with Kartik Aaryan, and a film with Rajkummar Rao as well. Now that’s some big line-up.

ACNE SCARS: A QUICK LOOK AT HOME REMEDIES AND MODERN-DAY TREATMENTS.

Acne is common among people of all ages, from teenagers and young adults to women going through menopause. While it can be distressing, the good news is that it is possible to manage acne scars effectively. As far as home remedies are concerned, application of aloe vera gel extract, coconut oil, vitamin E, raw honey, shea butter, grapeseed extract, icepacks, lemon juice, etc., can effectively lighten the acne scars on the face. However, in cases of severe acne, acne marks may require a more thorough treatment to make them less noticeable. A wide variety of acne scar removal treatments are available, but the right one depends on the type of acne, its severity and the extent of damage it has caused to the underlying skin. So, it is best to get expert advice from a dermatologist to choose the right and best acne scar treatment for you. There are numerous treatments available to remove or lighten the scarred surface, reduce its size or improve its appearance. Here are a few most effective ones:

CHEMICAL PEELING:

This involves the use of strong chemicals (acids) to remove the outer layer of skin and reduce the appearance of scars. Various chemicals such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA), glycolic acid can be used depending on the skin type, severity of acne and scarring caused by it. It is especially effective for deeper scars.

BOTOX INJECTIONS:

Botox injections are very effective for acne scars with puckered skin around them. This puckered area can be relaxed with an injection of botulinum toxin (Botox) to improve the appearance of skin.

PUNCH EXCISION:

This involves surgically removing an acne scar through a punch matching the size of the scar.

DERMABRASION:

Reserved for the most severe acne scarring, the procedure involves removal of the damaged top layer of skin with a rapidly rotating wire brush or wheel with a rough surface. The procedure deeply exfoliates the top layer of the skin to reduce the appearance of deeper scars.

MICRONEEDLING:

One of the most recent advances in pimple marks removal treatments, microneedling uses a small, handheld pen or needle-studded roller to puncture the skin on the surface of the scars. As the punctured skin heals, it makes collagen and reduces the visibility of acne scars by smoothing out the skin.

LASER RESURFACING:

Laser treatment for acne has recently gained a lot of noise for its superior and early results without using any chemicals or scrubs. The procedure involves the removal of the top layer of skin to reveal the underlying younger skin cells to reduce the appearance of scars. It creates a more even surface of the skin.

Winning hearts, accolades and acclaim with his incredible performance as real-life war hero Captain Vikram Batra, Sidharth Malhotra has clearly rewritten his success story with Shershaah. The film that celebrates the martyred Param Vir Chakra-awardee’s valiant spirit and honors his invaluable sacrifice in the Kargil War (1999), is being hailed as Sidharth’s career-best so far. The actor has always earned praise for his performances, and with this epic war-drama, the actor’s talent has been validated with the stamp of success once again, cementing his bankability as a star. In this exclusive conversation with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the star du jour Sidharth Malhotra talks about his journey from Student of the Year to being a student of Bollywood, scaling new heights as an actor and he also reveals his take on romance and marriage

Nine years since your debut with Student of the Year… …And it’s been an amazing nine years journey as a student of Bollywood I would say and I’m looking forward to the next coming years. You have unanimously been winning hearts, accolades, and critical acclaim for your outstanding performance as Captain Vikram Batra in the Amazon Original movie Shershaah. How special was the role for you when you first took it on? This is the most passionately involved I have ever been in any of my films and it has been the most special role that I have played for many reasons. It’s the first time that I play a real-life hero, and he’s a hero who has given his life for the country with such pride and confidence. There’s so much people talk about him being this good-hearted, confident person and how he was sitting on that battlefield - battered and bruised - and still saying ‘Yeh dil maange more sir, yeh dil maange more’! He’s such an inspiring and gratitude-filling, such an aspirational personality for all, so that made it a big responsibility for us to do justice, first to his family, and then to the Armed Forces. To be honest that’s the only review I was looking forward to or cared about because it’s more than a film for them and for me too. Yes, there’s a commercial side to it, but to be honest I cannot have looked at this film from a purely commercial point of view ever. I met the family even before I heard the script and once you meet the family, you realise that it’s not a story or a film for them, it’s about their son. And I am just glad that they feel we have done justice to Captain Vikram Batra’s memory and the film gives an essence of his life and his personality. Were you expecting Shershaah to be this huge a success that it has become? When we saw the film rushes, they looked pretty exciting and interesting. I think on a script level we already knew we had a very special film, a special story of Captain Vikram Batra and his heroic life. But everyone hopes for this kind of reaction. I’ll be extremely pompous and confident in saying that I expected it. I hoped for it, but I think it’s gone beyond our expectations as a team. I’m extremely happy and excited, for me it’s been a long journey of five years and in the end it’s been extremely gratifying.

It is being hailed as your career-best performance… Well, I’m someone who’s always very critical of my work and I always feel that there’s scope for improvement. I like to get into details and detailing. So I always leave it up to the audience to decide. I’m happy that people say that so far it’s my best, but I would say so far and I’m really geared up for my future work and hopefully I will get that response in the future as well, so getting better and better from here. In Shershaah, how much of Sidharth do we get to see versus what the real Captain Vikram Batra would have been like? The first thing that struck me is that his family is very similar to mine. We both come from a Punjabi culture, his parents are school teachers, my father’s in Merchant Navy and Vikram too was thinking of joining the Merchant Navy at one point. My grandfather was from the army and he served in the Indo-China war where he got injured and had to take an early retirement due to that. So there are a lot of personal references from my life, from his life. When I met his family, I felt like this could be my family. We’d done a lot of research, so pretty much 95 per cent of the film is documented or spoken about by his family, friends or colleagues from the army. More effort went into the army aspect of it, because it’s always a challenge when you play someone in uniform, especially a heroic character like him. How did your family react to your performance and what’s the best compliment you’ve received so far? Well, I was fortunate enough to show this film to my family with Vikram Batra’s family on the big screen in New Delhi when the Indian Army had a screening of Shershaah. And well, my family thinks this is my best, they connected with this film the most. They were extremely emotional at the end and they felt they saw a different boy on screen than what they know me as in my personal life. The best compliment definitely came from Captain Vikram Batra’s family, whether it’s his parents, or his brother or whether it’s his nieces or nephews who said how they all had heard of Vikram Chachu, but never met him. And now through this film, they October 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 11

Shershaah’s success is a great motivating factor, it gives me more fire in my belly to feed, to feel more passionately about my scripts and my future projects. I hope I entertain and inspire people in different genres. I still feel this is just the beginning, there’s so much more to do, so many more stories to tell. So many characters to play and this just gives me wings to fly and try new things.

understand why people talk about him and his heroics. So, their reaction means the world for me! Especially, Vishal Batra, his twin brother saying that he’d never seen Vikram in combat, but now whenever he thinks of him in combat, he sees my image. And I felt that was extremely emotional. These are extremely special moments for me as an actor and I will cherish these responses. You played an army officer in Aiyaary too, but it is in Shershaah that we see you in the uniform… Yes, Aiyaary was the tip of the iceberg. In Shershaah I was completely involved in it whether it’s training with the army, learning their etiquettes, their mannerisms, battlefield postures or using guns. I was actually using a fully functioning INSAS rifle in the film with fake blanks and all of us carry that. So we got amazing support from the Indian army to use their facilities to make it more authentic, so I think it’s more than just the uniform. But even the uniform, any Indian boy wearing that, it changes your posture, it changes your personality, there’s more confidence and that’s thanks to the legacy and the reputation that the Indian Army rightfully has. Now that I have seen them closely, my respect for them has grown a hundred folds. I was aware of it because of my grandfather, but then seeing it now as an adult is a completely different experience. So it was an honour and a far more emotional aspect playing Vikram and

wearing his uniform. Your chemistry with co-star Kiara Advani is also being much-talked about, what’s the secret? Well, I feel the only thing you can attribute good chemistry between two characters is good acting. There is no secret recipe or ingredient, it was always there in the writing. Of course it helps having a co-star who you can improvise with, be more comfortable with. Having a director who lets you try things, so I think it’s a combination of all those. And we’re happy with the response coming in, it’s me and Kiara coming together for the first time and it was Vikram and Dimple’s love story, which is a very integral part of Vikram. So I’m happy people are enjoying Vikram and Dimple’s love story. Which co-star do you think you have shared the best chemistry with on screen? Akshay Kumar in Brothers! I spent so much blood and sweat with him. Physically we’ve had the most intimate scenes in Brothers (laughs), rappling and grappling both half naked. I know him pretty well and I think our chemistry was superb. There are rumours about your personal life, so what’s the take of one of the most eligible bachelors of Bollywood? I am. My parents are also asking me questions ‘when is the date’. And ‘would you want to be married or not’ and I keep saying ‘what’s the hurry, what’s the rush’. There’s so much time, there’s so much to do in life (laughs). What is your romantic side like? Everyone has romance in their

lives. Especially in my profession we have the luxury to travel and that’s something I really enjoy. Having that partner. I think you can tell a lot when you spend that quality time with someone in a more isolated situation. But yes, romance is also so many other things. It’s tough to articulate what specifically though. I feel like I am more spontaneous kinds, like if I want to travel or do something, I just do it. I like outdoors and I love exploring whether it’s the sea or mountains or the jungles… I love being in nature and that I think trickles into any of my relationships too. So would you call yourself very romantic? I don’t know. That’s for that other person to answer. But yes, there’s a side of it, a different version of romance. Everyone’s definition of romance is different. I would say I’m someone who’s emotional and sensitive and hopefully the other person feels the same. Your choice of roles has been very versatile, what about the film makes you say a yes to it? I like slightly imperfect characters. Whether it’s a Hasee Toh Phasee or Ek Villain or any of the other films like Kapoor & Sons... And it’s what I’d like to watch as an audience too. Something has to intrigue me, October 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 13

COVER STORY

I don’t know what the real me is and that’s the fun part of being an actor that you’re always exploring and can’t define yourself in one or two boxes. But yes, once you see Shershaah, the household part of him, the love story part of him, I would say I could relate to much more.

something different and that’s what my attempt as an actor is. What’s the real Sidharth like? Wow… I feel one of the special things of an actor’s life is that we get to live so many lives in one lifetime. Whether it’s a love story or a family film… I feel there’s a bit of me in all of them. There’s always a side to the character that you can empathise with. I don’t know what the real me is and that’s the fun part of being an actor that you’re always exploring and can’t define yourself in one or two boxes. But yes, once you see Shershaah, the household part of him, the love story part of him, I would say I could relate to much more. You’ve had the ups and downs, enjoyed success and faced failures, but you’ve constantly been moving forward like a force…

Yes, and now it’s no longer just about coming to Mumbai from Delhi wanting to be an actor. When I started my journey here, it took me years to get an audition to get into an ad film and it took me years to learn about filmmaking and get my first film and then the films have had their own struggles. So I feel, it’s the journey, it’s the boy who comes from Delhi who cannot give up even if people say that he’s not for this. But I said then maybe for that one, and then for the next one, and I think it’s the same for every Friday. It’s been a learning. It’s something that’s no longer a want, it’s become a need now. Need is stronger than wanting, but now this is something that I need for my satisfaction. Something that I need for the actor in me, the person in me, or for the family that I’ve left behind in New Delhi in coming here. So I think the need aspect is

what keeps me driving. I’m more emotionally attached to my material and hopefully, that would show on screen and we would have many more of these conversations. What about success? What is that for you? I think over the years the definition of success has changed for me. Like in my early 20s it was ki yaar chalo ab Mumbai jaeyenge and I will work and pay my own rent. When I did that, I felt successful. Then if I get a chance to audition and get selected for a film that would be success. Or if I go on to become an Assistant Director and I get a big film which I did that was success. So I think every small peak that I reached over my life was success. And it keeps changing, it can’t be a constant. I wanted to be an actor but the day I became one with Student of the Year, I achieved that and now it’s been nine years to that. So the definition of success changes. As of today my definition of success would be to do justice to films. Like in Shershaah it was to do justice to the family of Vikram Batra where they see the complete film and they feel that it’s given them a sense of closure or it’s giving them the essence of their son, that’s success. With the next film it will be different, it keeps changing, we’ll just have to see.

What does this film’s immense success mean for you in terms of your future projects? Well, for me Shershaah’s success means everything. It’s something that I hold very dearly and close to my heart and its true gold! It’s better than any financial gain, any personal gain. Because I came into this business to do movies like this, to inspire people to say inspiring stories and it’s extremely gratifying when you get this kind of love and response especially for a film like this. I have been associated with this for five years and backing it up, through all the changes it’s been through. So, when you feel so passionate about something, this kind of response gives you an immense boost for future films and makes you believe in your convictions. Seniors are still reigning, juniors are coming in, how do you look at all the competition? Competition is great, I’m just not up for jealousy. There’s a big difference there. Healthy competition pushes you to work harder, inspires you. And in the last 15 years when I came to Mumbai I was competing with so many people when it came to auditioning, as a model, as an actor, so it’ll never end. It’s great till it stays healthy and does not go to the negative emotion of jealousy. Any lesson you hold dear to heart? Over the years there’s a great amount of learning that comes in, as to what and how. As I said, I’m truly a student of Bollywood. When you start learning, sometimes there’s a lack of guidance. So you are yourself and you have to make your decisions and good or bad, you learn to stand by them. Also I have matured over the past years and I’m far more equipped to handle Bollywood today than I was nine years ago. What are your upcoming projects? There’s Mission Majnu, a spy thriller set in the 1970s that’s inspired by true events about how India derailed Pakistan from becoming a nuclear power. Then I have Thank God which is Inder Kumar’s film with Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh. Then there’s an action film that follows after. So, yes as I said, I’m very attached to the materials as all have great merit in their own genres and I’m looking forward to hopefully things getting back to normal and many more films coming out.

There’s nothing like being overdressed when it comes to ethnic wear. You can wear a saree, add a trench coat to it, accessories it with a statement necklace, wear blingy heels and carry an embroidered potli and there’s still going to be scope for more. To help you go that extra mile and not let your hair take the back seat, a fancy hair accessory can go a long way. You can go the traditional way like Sonam Kapoor with an eye-catching maang-tikka or opt for a chic scarf for your bun like Vidya Balan or a boho feathered extension like Madhuri Dixit Nene. All these styles make your look elegant ten fold. The latest addition to hair accessory is from Rhea Kapoor’s bridal look where she added a pearl veil instead of a regular one and we can’t help but gush over this beautiful and elegant way to accessorise a simple saree or lehenga.

KRITI SANON

The simplest way to add some glamour to your hairdo is wrapping around fresh gajra or flowers to a bun or simply pinning back your hair with metallic bobbypins. This is both functional and trendy to look at.

It is said that the first impression comes from the hair and the shoes. So concentrate on these things and express your personality. 16 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST October 2021

On the Rise! INTERVIEW

There’s no stopping Zarnish Khan! The Pakistani TV actress who first shot to instant stardom with Susraal Mera (2015), has been on a roll since. Having made her mark on the small screen with her strong performances, the young star continues to prove her acting mettle time and again. Earlier this year, she also made her debut as a singer with Behta Darya. In an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, Zarnish Khan talks about her passion for singing and also shares her upcoming projects 34 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST October 2021

So, I am attracted to roles that are strong and have some depth, especially that portray a story with substance and a public message. I feel that my character should have something to say and convey. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PASSION FOR SINGING! I think every person sings for fun while growing up. I am no exception. I love music, dancing, and singing too. Even today, it is quite hard for me to see myself as a singer, but like everything else, I really wanted to try it. When my first song Behta Derya came out, I was very overwhelmed by the response of my fans. The love and support of my fans gave me the confidence to try it again. WHAT ABOUT OTT? OTT is the future and I would love to do a full series on the digital platform too. In fact, I just did a short film Dulhan Exposed and that was a lot of fun. I’d like to do more projects like that again if they have some kind of message and meaning attached to them. I am also keen on experimenting with different roles provided they have enough substance. WHAT ARE YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS? Well, there’s Aitebar. It’s a drama show for Hum TV. Then there’s Kashmir Beats Season 2 that I’m very excited about, and then there’s the short film Dulhan Exposed on OTT .

I am attracted to roles that are strong and have some depth, especially that portray a story with substance and a public message. I feel that my character should have something to say and convey. HAVING STARRED IN OVER 15 SHOWS, WHICH ONES WOULD YOU SAY HAVE BEEN THE MILESTONES IN YOUR CAREER? Every role has in some way or the other made me the actor that I am and I’m equally proud of all my shows. But having said that, Laaj and Ishq Zahe Naseeb are the two shows that have been the real milestones for me professionally. WAS BECOMING AN ACTRESS ALWAYS A DREAM? No, not at all. I am a free spirit, and as a teenager, I just wanted to try everything. Even when my first drama aired, acting wasn’t my passion. However, when I won an award for the Best Actress in my first year in the industry, that was the turning point for me and I started taking acting as a full-time career. Truth be told, I still feel that there is so much more I have to do in life. Let’s see how my life pans out in the future. IS THERE ANY ROLE THAT YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH? The role that I would is close to my real personality would be Mehru from the serial Khubsurat. However, my fans identify me with the character of Lali that I played in Sun Yaara. I feel that as an actor somewhere you do relate to every character, because unless you empathise with the character you can’t do justice to the role on screen. But yes, some characters you find easier to identify with. WHAT ARE THE KIND OF ROLES THAT ATTRACT YOU? Roles that somewhat resonate with the kind of person I am tend to get my immediate attention. I feel that with every role, you somehow make a social statement too. October 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 35

INTERVIEW

happiest ‘I am the

that I could be’ …says Gauahar Khan as we catch up with the spunky actress for an exclusive chat. Having tied the knot with Zaid Darbar last year (December 25, 2020), Bollywood and TV’s much-loved and popular star reveals that though marriage has not changed her as a person, she’s certainly more content than she ever was. In a candid conversation with Aakanksha NavalShetye, the 14 Phere and Kaali Peeli Tales actress talks about life post-marriage, starring together with husband Zaid Darbar, and her other upcoming projects TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR MOST RECENT OUTING KAALI PEELI TALES… It was as exciting to do as it is to watch. There’re six different stories, so there’s a lot of variety for the viewers. My story is very interesting and it was challenging too. My character in the film, Anu, she’s a strong person, someone who can take her decisions even though she’s in a phase where she’s very vulnerable. She really needs her husband’s support, but it doesn’t work that way, so what she does and how she deals with the situation was interesting to do. HAS MARRIAGE CHANGED YOU? Well, not really. I’m always hyper and like to do things at a particular time. Even with Zaid I’m hyper, so I’ve not changed as a personality. It’s not really about being calm or being in a different state of mind. So, I’m still not calm like that, but I think I have just become more content. There was only one element in my life that was probably not ticked off and that was a partner, a soulmate and I found Zaid, so I am the happiest that I could be. He has been an anchor in my

36 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST October 2021

29/09/2021 2:12 AM

life. Whenever I want to sail he’s there and when I want some holding he’s there too. YOU AND ZAID STARRED TOGETHER IN A MUSIC VIDEO FOR THE FIRST TIME RECENTLY THAT WAS REALLY WELL RECEIVED… Yes, it was our first project together. We starred in the music video of Waapis, sung by the famous Ali Brothers. They’re just so talented, and I’m glad that the song hit a tune with everyone. WHO’S THE MORE ROMANTIC OF THE TWO? I think Zaid. He’s really good with surprising me randomly, when I’m not expecting it at all. Like he’ll surprise me with little gestures, like he’ll get me a flower without any occasion, so these little things that you’re not expecting make it really special. WHAT’S THE ONE THING ABOUT HIM THAT’S MOST ENDEARING TO YOU? He’s very thoughtful. Like I don’t have to tell him I need something, somehow he always knows. I was recently in a hospital and he was coming from home. He knows that I like to sleep with this particular soft toy that I have and he got that for me. So it’s these little gestures that matter the most.

MY APPROACH TO WORK IS THE SAME. IN FACT, WORK HAS NEVER BEEN BETTER. ZAID HAS NOT JUST BEEN SUPPORTIVE, BUT ALSO VERY LUCKY FOR ME. SINCE HE’S COME INTO MY LIFE I’M BEING OFFERED SO MANY DIFFERENT KIND OF ROLES.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR STRENGTH THROUGH YOUR JOURNEY AS AN ACTOR? My family. Without them I am nothing and my faith because that’s what makes me who I am. That gives me the values of life, so my faith in the Almighty… I need him and my family. ANY PLANS OF COMING TO DUBAI? Yes, I’d love to come to Dubai soon as my family is there.

DO THE TWO OF YOU DISCUSS WORK? Scripts yes, but it’s never about seeking approval of whether I should do it or not because there’s a lot of trust we have. So we don’t interfere on that level. But yes, I do discuss that I have this offer or that project and he tells me the same. So we discuss work but not permissions, it’s a healthy exchange. HAS YOUR APPROACH TO WORK CHANGED POST MARRIAGE? My approach to work is the same. In fact, work has never been better. Zaid has not just been supportive, but also very lucky for me. Since he’s come into my life I’m being offered so many different kind of roles. Some roles may look like, as a husband, he may not approve of or may not like, but he’s very supportive. He’s not somebody who wants to control me like that. He knows that I know my limits and I know that I’ll never do something that’ll jeopardize my relationship with him. We just trust each other, so that’s most important. WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER UPCOMING PROJECTS? I have three music videos coming up that I have already shot for. One of them is again with Zaid. Besides that, I have already completed a big OTT show that will be out in October or November. Then there’s a film too, so there’s a lot going on. I’m really looking forward to the kind of response people will have, because after 14 Phere, the feedback I’ve got is that people are looking forward to seeing what more can I do. YOU HAVE ALWAYS GARNERED A POSITIVE RESPONSE FROM THE AUDIENCE AND CRITICS AND OFTEN MOST EVEN FEEL THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN MORE SCREEN TIME? Well, yes, I’m ready for a lot more screen time. I’m right here (laughs). But to be honest more than that screen time, I’m very satisfied with the kind of response I get for my work. So I’m grateful and I’m happy. happened! In fact, the acclaimed director of super-hits like Arinthum Ariyamalum, Pattiyal, Billa, Arrambam, reveals that he was not keen on biting the bait of going Pan-India by taking up offers of remaking any of his own hits in Hindi. Instead, what finally made the filmmaker take the Bollywood plunge was a chance to bring to screen the inspirational story and the bravery of Kargil war-hero and Param Vir Chakra-awardee Captain Vikram Batra! The Amazon Original film starring Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani released on Amazon Prime Video and has gone on to add one more superhit to the director’s impressive list by becoming one of the most-watched Hindi films on the OTT platform. We caught up with the Shershaah Director for a quick chat. YOU WERE CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH BOLLYWOOD IN YOUR EARLY YEARS AS AN ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SANTOSH SIVAN AND AN ACTOR TOO, BUT WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG TO DIRECT A FILM HERE? Because I have worked in Bollywood before, I wanted to go back to my roots when I started directing. That was years ago. So I was enjoying making films in the south and they were doing well too. Even then a lot of offers were coming my way to remake my films in Hindi. But for me, it was never about wanting to come back to directing the same thing in a different language. There’s nothing exciting in that and with every film you want to bring that element of excitement, that challenge of doing something new. But when Shershaah happened, I couldn’t have asked for a better Bollywood debut. Like the team that was bringing it together, there was Dharma (Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions), there’s Sandeep (writer Sandeep Shrivastava), a beautiful cast and crew, above all, a film based on Indian army that I have never done before, a biopic that of a real life hero especially one based on the life and a story which is so inspiring and needed to be told… Like what else does a director need! I would have dropped everything else to come and do a film like this. WERE YOU EVER SKEPTICAL ABOUT SHERSHAAH BEING COMPARED TO THE OTHER WAR-MOVIES MADE EARLIER? Yes there have been war films made, not just here, but also globally. But I was clear to not use any of those as a reference ground. I wasn’t concerned about what the people would think. Instead of worrying about that aspect, we focused on what we wanted to show on screen and we were clear about that. Sandeep researched extensively about Captain Vikram Batra. From meeting the people close to him, his batch-mates, army colleagues, the family members to every single friend, his lover Dimple, trying to gather information of what actually happened. The aim was to understand the kind of person he was, that would translate to the film being genuine. Even when it came to the warfare shots, which were one of the most difficult ones, we did not want to take any international reference of how we want to shoot it. The peaks that Captain Batra captured are one of the most important features and we wanted to stay true as much as possible. YOU HAVE CAPTURED THE EMOTIONS BEAUTIFULLY, WITHOUT RELYING ON JINGOISM OR MAKING IT ALL OVER-DRAMATIC! What happened makes for such genuine emotions that you don’t need to rely on anything dramatic. They are

real stories of bravery that move your heart and that’s how we wanted to present it. What we heard and felt in our interactions with Captain Batra’s family and friends is so real that we wanted to keep that true and real rather than overtly dramatize it or make it star-heavy. The film should make you feel their sincerity, the patriotism and the idea was to present it all treated with minimum of cinematic liberties used to just push the emotion, including action. YES THE FILM REFLECTS THAT BRILLIANTLY… This film is an opportunity to see what genuinely happened. It is to show the audience visually how difficult it was. Our army fought at an altitude with the lowest oxygen levels at 16,000 feet and we filmed at 14,000 feet which is still with very low levels of oxygen and that’s what we wanted to reflect. So yes even while shooting, it took time to get used to it and was certainly not easy. WHAT’S BEEN YOUR TAKEAWAY FROM THE MOVIE? It’s pretty much for today’s generation to know what really happened in 1999. It’s a story that’s told many times over, and this was an opportunity to tell this story of valour and bravery of people which is inspirational. That is the biggest takeaway! Look at what he (Captain Vikram Batra) accomplished at the age of 24 to become a legend. It makes you question, what do you want to do with your life? So it’s inspirational, it’s touching the heart, a hero’s story. You end up recognising and appreciating manifold these bravehearts of the army, the service Indian army is doing, the feeling of pride that we had while making the movie is the feeling being translated into the film’s vision. There’s no greater joy than that. TELL US ABOUT SIDHARTH PLAYING CAPTAIN VIKRAM BATRA AND THE ENTIRE PROCESS OF PREPPING FOR IT… The idea was to make sure that Sidharth was not imitating the man, but being him on the screen. And the most beautiful part was that he too met the family, the friends to get his story, which was nice as he was vital in maintaining those genuine emotions. Then living with those facts and memories becomes a part of your muscle memory and then all you have to do is react. By the end of the training and the sessions we had with Sidharth, we could see him transform naturally into Vikram, we didn’t have to forcibly make him do anything at all. So by the end we could see Sid as Captain Vikram Batra.

And counting! One of the most prolific actors of Indian cinema, Jayasurya is also one of Malayalam cinema’s busiest stars. The powerhouse performer who has as many as six films lined up ahead, is known for his brave choices on screen and his knack for playing those parts to perfection make the National Award and this Filmfare Award South winner one of the most sought-after names in the industry. Now the actor’s added yet another laurel to his list of illustrious screen outings with Sunny that also marked his 100th film. In an exclusive conversation with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the talented South star talks about his love for challenging roles and crossing the landmark number in his career.

YOU’VE COMPLETED A CENTURY WITH SUNNY. HOW EXCITED ARE YOU ABOUT THIS ONE? To be honest I’m more excited about the film being released on an OTT platform like Amazon Prime Video, because that means the film will have a wider reach. Yes this is my 100th movie, but that’s just a co-incidence and not planned. Personally these numbers don’t matter to me, what matters is that we make a film that pushes the envelope.

TELL US MORE ABOUT SUNNY... During the lockdown, Ranjith (director Ranjith Sankar) and I had been sharing many ideas and thoughts. At that point I really wanted to do a movie like Cast Away and 127 Hours… that genre of movies, so that was on my mind and when Ranjith bounced a similar idea, we sat and discussed, but somehow that didn’t work out. But that idea did not leave me completely and I told him that Sunny is haunting me. So we sat and discussed the character and we found so many layers that we wanted to explore the idea on screen. The idea of a lonely musician, who could not be as successful as he hoped, he is losing his self-confidence, has many family issues. So he’s a very regular person suffering from multiple emotions in isolation. THIS IS YOUR EIGHTH FILM WITH RANJITH. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EQUATION WITH HIM! We are both comfortable and critical of each other’s work. He’s very open as a creative person and there’s no ego at all. And most of all, he trusts me. He understands my grasp of the character and trusts me that I will go to the extreme to get that perfection for the character. And the main thing is that we sit and talk about the character, we discuss, and explore so many aspects and layers to a character and the story. Also I am always curious about my character and ask a hundred questions and he always has the patience to explain it to me. We are like the bouncing board for each other.

YOU’VE NEVER SHIED AWAY FROM TAKING RISKS AS AN ACTOR? I don’t see any of my films as a risk at all. Every time I have agreed to play a different character, it is because I have felt that character. And if that character is strong, I’ll definitely do that. There’s a challenge, but I don’t look at it as a risk. As an actor I never want to cling to a comfort zone. Where’s the challenge in that? So I really want to do different genres, tap myself. And Ranjith and I as a directoractor combo have tried this many times. Wheteher it’s a Njan Marykutty or Su.. Su… Sudhi Vathmeekam. If there’s something interesting then I am up for it.

WHEN YOU PLAY AN INTENSE OR A BROODING OR A DISTURBING CHARACTER, DOES IT WEIGH ON YOUR PERSONALITY POST SHOOT TOO? Not at all, because my character never feels disturbing to me. For me, every character I have played is like a family member and special for their own peculiar reason. But they all hold a space in my heart and I recall them with fond memories. HOW EXCITING IS OTT AS A MEDIUM FOR YOU? I feel it’s not about a small screen, but about a wider reach. A film like Parasite

is accessible to us and after watching it people will look further and find more films of the same director, the same actor. It’s the same here. So, the OTT has not bridged, but broken language barriers and made works across industries accessible. It’s not just Pan India, but global. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? There’s John Luther, then Meri Awaz Suno, and many more exciting films coming up.

WHICH ONE WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHALLENGING ROLE ON SCREEN? I would say Njan Marykutty. I don’t know if I could do it again, playing a role like that. But I believe that we can’t choose films, the film has to choose me. So I feel that I didn’t choose Sunny, Sunny chose me. WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART ABOUT SUNNY? It’s a one-man show and that was challenging because there’s nobody else other than me to look at. So you have just one character to watch who has to keep you engrossed with his emotions for one and a half hours. That was challenging and interesting both. Because there are so many layers to the chacater. And that’s the thing, if it wasn’t so challenging, I wouldn’t have done the film in the first place. October 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 41

Luxury is a Tree of Life A 432-year-old giant Olive tree greets you at the Arora household at Emirates Hills which spreads across 60,00 sq feet. The full-blown tree, was uprooted from Spain, shipped to Dubai and holds pride of space in Deepak and Ritu Arora’s subtle and luxurious home, surrounded by greenery. Manju Ramanan speaks to the couple and their son Raghav Arora on what does luxury mean to them!

D

eepak Arora, MD of the DRA Group, an architect by profession came to Dubai in 1976 to work in an architectural consulting firm but always nursed an ambition to start on his own. In 1981, he got married to Ritu, a Masters in English Literature from Lady Sriram College in Delhi and the couple set up home in Sharjah in a one-bedroom-apartment and then eventually to a three-bedroom apartment when their sons were born. “There was this bottle shaped building in Sharjah and the tallest one there and we lived there before we moved to Dubai,” adds Ritu. The couple have an unusual love for plants and that is evident in a plant they own, dating back 40 years! “We were both fond of greenery back then too. In fact, we bought our first plant for 40 dirhams back then – a Monstera plant. After 40 years, we still have it,” says Ritu who believes that the plant takes care of them. “It is energy after all and we value it.” Says Deepak. “It needs daily care and attention. One has to value life and people. We have developed a bond with the plant.” Their home opens out into larger spaces and is a seamless

collaboration between outdoors and indoor spaces blending all the five elements – earth, water, air, sky and fire. “We don’t like confined spaces and the home reflects what we are. We have nothing to hide in life and we are transparent,” says Ritu. Ask them if they believe in Vaastu or feng shui and Deepak states, “Vastu to me is orientation and that natural elements need to be utilized to bring out the best. We take care when we design but we are not obsessive,” he adds. Life in Dubai has been good for the couple who built their first home in Emirates Hills in 2004 but as their sons got married, they needed more space, they built this home three years ago. Ask the couple what luxury means to them. “Luxury is a very individual thing. Good space, a well-lit home, nature, greenery, sunlight is luxury for me,” states Deepak. Ritu admits that she enjoys the good things in life. “But with age, I believe, luxury means good health, a roof over your head, a loving family and children. Yes, we do enjoy material things in life too, who doesn’t” But how is it when an architect builds his own home.

“There are no limitations. When you build someone else’s home, you take-into-account their choices. But with your own home, you know what you want,” adds Deepak. Do they have favourite corners in their massive home. Yes! They do! For Deepak it is the space under the tree and the lounge next to the bar. And for Ritu, she is usually found in the seating place next to the tree. “It is the central part of the house and it opens to the sky and you can hear the birds chirping there. In the early morning, it is a natural aviary,” she adds. Was it tough transporting the tree? “No, we had experts doing that. It was shipped from Spain but when it arrived, it was in the customs for 15 days and had turned brown. So, when we planted it here, we weren’t sure if it would live. We got cranes in and planted the tree and looked after it but it showed no signs of life. Every day we would come out and see if something had changed. But on July 15th, which is my birthday, we saw a small green leaf. We were so thrilled. It felt so good,” states Deepak. The tree has adventitious roots so, the house has a parking under the tree. “You can say that the tree is literally floating,” adds Deepak. Ritu who follows Vedanta, believes in plants and energy and states philosophically. “You can admire a tree but you cannot bring it to life. Money cannot buy life.” Their older son Raghav, an architect himself who has supervised the making of the home States that when he started the project, he knew it was going to be a very big house stretching out to 60,00 sq. ft. “We wanted it to be airy, open, not to be lost within the house. So, he kept spaces open and one factor is to allow natural air and ventilation to come through the house. Another idea was to allow anyone living at home, to be able to view the sky outside. “That makes you feel connected to the outdoor. There is an Inside/outside amalgamation – blurring the indoors and outdoors. The interiors are all subtle and muted and reflect who we are at people. No prints or patterns, we kept it quite neutral.” With a sculptural chandelier and Sujata Bajaj’s massive work and a Ganesha sculpture, the home has a few curated pieces of art including driftwood. “We choose art that speaks to us and that is how it becomes valuable.” Both he and his brother have baby boys and the home is roomy enough for the kids to run around. The Aroras, who have several prestigious projects have designed over 100 villas in Emirates Hills and have completed work at the India Pavilion, Dubai Expo, the Emirates Airline Pavilion and the Enoc Centre. They are the architects of Dubai’s massive temple coming up near the Jebel Ali Gurudwara. “It will have 15 deities and will be a massive space. It should be ready by Diwali next year,” states Raghav. As I leave the space, the serenity of the home envelopes me. Luxury is this too. A chapter in subtlety, space and a tree of life. PHOTOGRAPHS: YASIR ARAFAT

The High Life Manu and Sapna Jeswani’s sprawling home in Emirates Hills, is a lot about space, lights and the colour blue. With art pieces from Italy collected lovingly over the years, the much-featured home is like a mini resort, with its own beauty parlour, home-theatre, massage room, gym and a party hall with a dance floor. Manju Ramanan takes a tour.

Paresh Maity painting dominates the dining room of Manu and Sapna Jeswani’s home and like Maity’s love for blue, the owners love the colour too and you can see it splashed across the furniture, lights and décor of the home. Manu Jeswani, the CEO of Shoemart, part of the Landmark Group for the last 43 years finds his home lucky. In fact, his first ever home was built in the same land and the family lived in it for 9 years from 2007. A few years ago, the couple decided to refurbish it but ended by pulling the old home down to create a new structure. “We took our time to create a home that was luxurious and cultural,” he states. The home also has a beautiful temple 44 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST October 2021

because my wife insisted that if we have big rooms for ourselves we should have one for our deities as well.” The house took three years to be built because it has a massive basement that houses the beauty parlour, massage room and the party hall. The drawing room with high ceilings gives space for chandeliers and the couple love their collections that are diverse and aplenty. The Landmark group started in Bahrain in 1975 and Manu Jeswani who joined the group in 1978 is one of the pillars of the company “Whatever I have is because of the Landmark Group and our Chairman Micky Jagtiani,” he adds. After their wedding in 1982, the couple lived in Bahrain for a while and then moved to Dubai in 1990. Their initial years were simple but soon, they moved to

Emirates Hills in 2007 and built their first home. “We never imagined that we would be living in a such a big house,” says Manu Jeswani. “He would often tell me in the initial years that we will have our own home and I will read the newspaper in our garden. Today all that is a reality,” says Sapna Jeswani. A house estimated to cost AED 80-90 million, it is priceless for the family. “We built it to live in it, not to sell it. We want to enjoy the house,” says Manu Jeswani. What are their favourite spaces around the house? “I love to sit in the lounge area or in the home theatre or the family dining area,” he says. And for her, it is her temple. “It is serene and peaceful and I can spend hours there,” she adds. Ask him who is the avid shopper between them and he points to his wife. “We both love to travel and she collects art and both of us love art pieces from Italy. The furniture came from Italy and Portugal. From Indian art, I got Indian artist Paresh Maity to paint for us because my wife likes blue. For the temple we travelled to India to buy marble statues.” The center-piece of the house is

a massive chandelier from Italy that is giant grape bunch that changes colour. Each glass case in it is shaped differently and made in a different material – amber, silver etc. “Luxury and comfort to me is when my family is with me. I value relationships and always wanted a big house with family the loves you and servants who respect and love you. Home is a place where you feel comforted and respected. I find that in this home.” Interestingly, the home has no mark of shoe related art. “I don’t have that element. We wanted a simple and straight home without too many corners. It had to look elegant and not over-powering,” he adds. After the house was built, the interiors took one year. “The interiors guy suggested pale colours for the furniture but I wanted blue. I like vibrant colours and dull colours are so not me,” says Sapna. “Life is to live and not just to save. Dubai teaches us to live in the now,” she signs off. True that! Living life KinG-size! As the Chairman and founder of Daredia Constructions, Sikander Daredia is known for having established his business empire successfully in Hyderabad. But the real estate mogul is equally renowned for his passion of cars and his collection boasts of quite an envious list of four-wheeled beauties too. We caught up with Sikander Daredia on his recent visit to Dubai and in an exclusive chat with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, the construction baron talks all about his love for cars and enjoying his life in the lap of luxury!

A

s the head honcho of Daredia Constructions, Sikander Daredia is a much-respected name in the industry circles. But while the chairman and founder of Hyderabad’s numero uno construction company believes in working hard and not counting on shortcuts when it comes to success or making his brand a trustworthy name, he also strongly believes in maintaining that balance when it comes to his work and personal life. An astute businessman, a loving husband and a proud father of two, Sikander says, “I have been into the construction business since 20 years now, and while I constantly strive to better the growth prospects, I also make sure that I balance my life and in that my family, my friends, all play an important

part. I believe in living my life King-size.” Candid about his love for cars, travelling, fashion and all things luxurious, the real estate mogul adds that cars especially hold a special place. Talking about his much-prided collection that boasts of more than five super-luxury and exclusive cars, Sikander adds, that he harboured a passion for cars since he was a child. “Owning such supercars was a childhood dream and by God’s grace I got even more than what I had dreamt of,” he says. “My friends and I, we go for drives on Sundays, so it’s an amazing sight to see these 15 - 20 supercars all out together on the roads. onlookers in passing vehicles and on the road certainly makes you beam with pride,” he admits candidly. Talking about his favourites from his collection, he says that the G Wagon Brabus (Mercedes-AMG G63) of which there are only two in India and one of them is owned by Sikander is his favourite. “I have two G Wagons, but this one’s a favourite. And my other favourite car is the Lamborghini, although I am a fan of Rovers too,” he shares. As to what attracts him to a four-wheeled beauty, he says that it’s not the speed, but the power an engine exudes that charges him up. “I’m not so much into speed as such, and I always make sure that I never rash-drive. So yes, I take

extra care of that. But the luxurious look and feel of the car is what draws me.” Looking back, Sikander reveals that his journey to the top hasn’t been without a struggle. Having lost his father when he was 23-years-old, he shares that he has built his empire from scratch. “After losing my father, there came a time when he had to sell off everything. I did not start from zero, but from a minus. I have struggled a lot and one of the basic lessons I learnt is that money is important and I have no qualms in admitting that either. It’s taken hard work to reach here and while continuing to work harder I also want to enjoy the luxurious lifestyle that I can now have.” Going ahead, he says, “I just want to gain more trust of the people connected with me, that’s the main factor in business. And that will always be paramount.” Talking about success, he says that there can’t be one definite benchmark for it. “Success changes. There’s no limit. After every achievement, the level keeps rising. The goals keep changing and you always want to grow more and get better. So what is luxury for him? “It is living the good life, enjoying the lifestyle you have, travelling, and being able to pursue what you dream of.” As for his favourite travel destinations, Sikander shares that Dubai ranks high, apart from London. “I love Dubai. Its proximity to home is one of the big draws. I can have breakfast here and have lunch with my mom in India. Second destination that I love is London, especially for shopping. And I also love the US.” Having achieved such heights with sheer dedication and hard work, his advice to all is, to dream. “Dream and dream big, they do come true. But also there are no shortcuts to success so you have to work hard, there’s no compromise there at all.” October 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 47

Model and celebrity anchor Simran Ahuja tells Aakanksha Naval-Shetye about her love for

showbiz and dance and also shares her most cherished and funniest red carpet moments with the stars Did you always want to be a part of the showbiz? Yes, always. I always dreamt of showbiz. What do you most enjoy about it? Being present amidst the legends and some of the most talented artistes who are passionately driven. To have a conversation with them, laugh with them, dance with them, celebrate with them and also get inspired by them is very special for me and something I cherish. I also enjoy the non-stop working hours, without realising its work, since it’s my first love. What is the most interesting interaction you’ve had with a star? All my interactions with the superstars have been truly interesting. Especially one with the heartthrob Hrithik Roshan… having a fun conversation, asking him questions, staring in his eyes (actually mesmerized by them), posing for selfies in front of the cameras, the fun, laughter and the awesomeness. Also with Ranveer Singh when he won the Filmfare Best Actor Award (2020). Again a long conversation, where I saw his different moods… right from energy personification to happiness, to getting emotional and expressing gratitude. All the feelings at one go. How excited are you about the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night? I’m extremely excited about the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night. Dubai is a very special place and to have all our stars here for the utmost spectacular show is a super thrilling

feeling for me. The glamour, the glitterati, the excitement all around. Can’t wait for the 28th of October.

How do you prep ahead of an event? Any tips that you keep in mind? Right from the gorgeous gown to shoes, I imagine myself with everyone, visualise the best version of me. And the most important thing is to keep my excitement, calm and be graceful, as I’m really excited for the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night. Also knowledge about the stars and some research regarding their movies, etc. is an important part of the preparation. What was the funniest moment you’ve had at a Red Carpet event? At the Red Carpet it was one of the best moments that I had with the gorgeous star diva Madhuri Dixit Ma’am and Sriram Nene Sir… but the way it was shot made it quite funny later. I had asked her, ‘Madhuri Ji when you wake up in the morning, what do you touch first, the smart phone or the toothbrush? Her answer was the smartphone. But then a few days later, that video became viral and the question became a meme, by showing the pic of Nene Sir to the answer of my question.

shows at Zurich, USA, London Parliament House, and Africa this November and December. Also tell us about your passion for dance. Dance gives me the soulful feeling of happiness. I feel like Radha dancing with my Krishna. As if I don’t exist and am dancing with the Gods with all Grace and love. I’m known as ‘Goddess of Folk Dance’ having played for 18 years and won consecutive 18 Folk Dance titles in India and America. From never being allowed to dance or learn dance to winning some of the top titles has been an interesting journey for me. As the Cultural Ambassador at Paris, we take our Indian Folk Dances across borders. My workshops all across the globe makes me realise that dance gives me energy and new life, and allows me to be best version of myself in every endeavour. Dance rejuvenates me, and makes every cell of my body happy. So it’s always amazing when I get to dance with our stars… Ranveer Singh, Farah Khan, Aamir Khan, Emraan Hashmi, Zareen Khan, Chunky Pandey, Ananya Pandey, and many more.

What are your other upcoming projects? There are four music albums to be released in November and December. Then I have a movie that I’m shooting for this year and it releases in 2022. There’s a documentary short film on Mirabai to be released soon. Then there are two TV talk shows that are currently on air and I will be doing two new talks shows for US channels. As the wellness ambassador, there are health and fitness shows to start this November. And I also have LIVE

I have had a minimal experience in acting. Apart from AK v/s AK where I played myself, long ago I did a play called Devta that was directed by the late Amjad Khan. There, interestingly, my brother Anil Kapoor, was playing my son and Mithun Chakraborty’s first wife Helena Luke was playing the female lead. Anil fell ill and dropped out of the play but I continued to play the dad role. After that I got deeply into the other aspects of film-making that includes being an assistant director, director and then into production in a big way. So, I never wanted to be facing the camera because I was too occupied and passionate about what I was doing. Now that I am surrounded by actors, I have become one too. We are the largest acting family in the industry – there is Anil, Sonam and Harshavardhan, there was Sri, there is Janhvi and Shanaya and more soon. In fact, Maheep was part of a series too!

Will you all star in a movie soon?

one from Ranbir’s angle, one from Dimple’s, one from mine – so you have to be alert and prepared.

How did you take to the make-up and other paraphernalia?

How was it working with Ranbir, Shraddha who you have seen as kids?

Why not. If we get a good script, we just might!

I am not used to make up, so I had to get used to it. But thankfully, these days, the natural look is in whereas earlier you were dolled up. Also mugging up lines isn’t that easy. I am playing Ranbir Kapoor’s dad and Dimple Kapadia’s husband – both great actors. Shraddha Kapoor is in the film too and then there are a bunch of new actors. The girl who plays my daughter is a new actor too. Of the lot, I have the lowest experience in acting. My years of being behind the camera has to be forgotten and I treat this as my debut. While I have experienced film-making, I am exploring film-acting as a craft. I need proper training to play someone who is not me. In AK v/s AK, I played myself and I had the freedom to say my lines. Here it is different. The cameras capture different points of view of the same scene –

Ranbir and Shraddha, I have known as kids. I knew Dimple before she started Bobby, when she was around 16-17 years of age. I met Shraddha again before she was considered for Baaghi. And I am a new actor in front of all of them. I will take it as it comes. And besides this, I already have 5 films on floor as a producer.

How has life been over the last two years?

I have reached a stage where I want to be occupied all the time. After losing my wife I don’t want to stay idle where I sit and think because I fear that I might get into depression. Thanks to my kids, they kept me occupied. We played indoor games and all that during the lockdown. It was tough for me, going back to the same bedroom I shared

with my wife. Of course, my old friends have helped me and stood by me. Nowadays I am dead tired when I walk into my bedroom, but it pushes me to sleep.

How do you think the late Sridevi, your wife, would have reacted to your acting stint?

She would not have allowed me to act. I am very fussy about my appearance, shoes and clothes and she would often tell me – thank God you are not an actor. I would tell her that since I am not as good looking as you are, I have to enhance my appearance with nice clothes to complete my look. She dreaded the thought of being an actor. I am fond of super luxurious things and I pamper my actors as well as pamper myself. She would call me a spoilt brat.

Are you dancing or singing in the film? Not that I know of. But wait and watch. I might surprise you! (Laughs)
