e are one of the safest cities to live in, Dubai has proved it yet again. Determined to go mask-less in the future, the emirate has been proactive in curbing the pandemic and has successfully upped the quality of life in these turbulent times. No wonder then, the city attracts talent and tourists worldwide. Shishir Sharma, the actor of Raazi fame is in Dubai currently visiting his daughter based here. He flew in from Istanbul where he was shooting a film with Parineeti Chopra. Music composer duo Sachin - Jigar is here creating music for their upcoming films along with the Maddock film crew. Music composer Amaal Mallik just left for India from the UAE and as we go to print there is news of singers Guru Randhawa and B Praak in town. The city is already home to singer Sonu Nigam whose family has moved here and superstar Sanjay Dutt and his family. Southern cinema sensation, actor R Madhavan shuttles between his second home Dubai and India. His son Vedaant is a national level swimming champion and lives and trains in Dubai. Actress Shilpa Shirodkar has been in Dubai for a decade and so have other stars and producers who have a summer home here. here’s been some fantastic news on the Royal front. Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and his wife, Sheikha Sheikha bint Saeed bin Thani Al Maktoum have been blessed with twins, becoming proud parents of a baby girl and a baby boy. Talking about the Royals, we were also privy to Her Highness Sheikha Sana Al Maktoum’s collection of unique and stunning jewellery pieces that were showcased at her first pop-up event in collaboration with Christies. A jewellery designer and GIA-trained Gemmologist, Sheikha Sana’s ‘My Treasure’ collection inspires confidence and reflects elegance making the contemporary pieces much-coveted by women of style and substance. Well, ever since I’ve moved to Dubai, it’s been a neverending tale of falling in love with this city. And it’s made us all proud once again after being ranked as one of the safest cities in the world. Also proving that not just a city of gold, it has a heart of gold too with all the loving support it has extended to its neighbours especially India in times of the Covid crisis. In the entertainment world, it was time to grab that popcorn and let Rachel, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey, Ross, and Monica win our hearts once again as they came together in the most-anticipated reunion ever - Friends: The Reunion - after a wait of 17 years since the last episode of Friends aired. Also the first half of the year in showbiz is dominated by some of the most prestigious celebrations of international entertainment. So there were the Oscars, the Grammys, the BAFTAs, and the most recent Billboards Music Awards, though Cannes stands postponed to July. But adapting to the new normal, the red carpets at these global events have witnessed a much lighter load of the glamourous footfalls and seen a dip in the power presence of the celebrity heavy-weights this time around. From rescheduling dates to virtual LIVE events and alternately resorting to low-key affairs, the celebs and the viewers are both coming to terms with the limited doses of glam being dished out to them. However, closer home, there won’t be any discount when it comes to entertainment at the upcoming grand finale of Mai Dubai presents Arab Asia Starz Season 2 brought to you by Filmfare ME and Starz Media. AJAY DEVGN WANTS PEOPLE TO CALL HIM SUDARSHAN Ajay Devgn had left a cryptic tweet on his Twitter profile where he asked his fans to now call him Sudarshan. No, he hasn’t changed his name. It’s his way of creating intrigue for his upcoming OTT series. Yes, you heard that right. Ajay Devgn will appear in an action series for OTT. We hear that Ajay Devgn’s show, called Rudra: Edge Of Darkness, is a remake of the British show Luther, a psychological crime thriller starring Idris Elba in the lead. Looks like Ileana D’Cruz will also star in the series. The show will be directed by Rajesh Mapuskar who has helmed films like Feraari Ki Sawaari and Ventilator. Meanwhile, Ajay is directing his third film called Mayday which also stars Amitabh Bachchan. He also has Thank God in the pipeline and important roles in SS Rajamouli’s RRR and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi. He’s not slowing down, is he?

Chehre, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi will see Rhea Chakraborty returning to the silver screen. Rhea went through hell after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. She was at the receiving end of a social media witchhunt. Later as the mass hysteria mounted, she was even questioned by three separate state agencies and had a drug charge slapped on her. And was also imprisoned. She was conspicuously absent from the promotions of Chehre. She wasn’t part of the poster, she wasn’t part of the teaser and was seen for a fleeting second in the trailer. Producer Anand Pandit claimed he did it for humanitarian reasons while talking to a leading newspaper. He said, “I don’t see any reason for not mentioning her name. She is among the eight artistes in the film. We signed her much earlier and she completed her part satisfactorily. So, we are looking at her as one of the actors who’s done a good job. Also, I don’t want to take undue advantage of her situation for the commercial benefit of my film. That’s why we decided that for the second poster, we won’t mention her name. She’s gone through enough turmoil in her life, and we didn’t want to add more ripples. We got her into the picture, only when she was comfortable.” Sweet!

expert advice RANVEER SINGH TO STAR IN SHANKAR’S ANNIYAN REMAKE Ranveer Singh and South filmmaker Shankar have joined hands for their most ambitious project. Shankar will direct Ranveer in the official adaptation of his cult blockbuster Anniyan, which has been a dubbed satellite hit under the name of Aparichit.. Speaking about this collaboration, Ranveer says, “I’m blessed to have this opportunity to be a part of the spectacular cinematic vision of Shankar sir. He is an exception to the norm, a true disruptor who has shown us that no vision is large enough to achieve on screen. I had always hoped and dreamed that I would get a chance to collaborate with him, and I have a strong feeling that we will create magic together. To lead a film like Anniyan is a dream come true for any artiste. Vikram Sir, one of our country’s finest talents, an artiste who I hugely admire, gave a colossal performance in the original, one that can never be matched. I can only hope that my interpretation and rendition of the part also connects with audiences in the same way. It’s undoubtedly a oncein-a-lifetime performance piece, and I am ready to give this role every single ounce of my being. Shankar Sir is a genius filmmaker and a true visionary. Words don’t do justice to just how excited I am at the prospect of being directed by him.” Ranveer is no stranger to unusual roles and we’re sure he’ll do well in this one as well.
KARTIK AARYAN OUT OF DOSTANA2
Sometimes, things happen so unexpectedly in our industry. Kartik Aaryan, the blue-eyed-boy of the industry was rudely ousted from Dharma Productions’ Dostana 2. The rumour mill stated it was because of Kartik’s attitude problems, though in their official statement, Dharma chose to maintain a ‘dignified silence’ over the whole affair. “Due to professional circumstances, on which we have decided to maintain a dignified silence, we will be recasting Dostana 2,” they said. It’s said they’ve incurred a loss of over 20 crores as Kartik had already started shooting for the film, which also stars Janhvi Kapoor and TV actor Lakshya Lalwani, who is making his big screen debut with it. We’ve heard that Karan Johar has now approached Akshay Kumar to replace Kartik. Akshay however, hasn’t given his nod yet. It’s also being touted that the original bad boys from Dostana, John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan, will make a special appearance in the film. Why not bring PeeCee back as well? Just a suggestion. Anyway, we will keep you posted about the new developments in the story.

There’s something unique about Randeep Hooda. Oozing raw masculinity, combined with an earthy appeal, a sapient intelligence and his cinematic sensibilities made him an instant heartthrob! And though the macho star may have conscientiously steered away from being the quintessential Bollywood hero and instead opted for the more intense and challenging roles, yet his quirky choices over the years have not dented his commercial viability at the Box Office. Neither has it dimmed the hunky appeal that his fans swear by. Having cemented his spot as a powerhouse performer with films like Highway, Laal Rang, Rang Rasiya, Sarbjit, amongst others, he’s currently rocking the scene with his high-octane, action-pumped outings in two massive blockbuster entertainers backto-back. His Hollywood debut that saw him raise the temperature in Netflix’s Extraction also starring Chris Hemsworth and most recently in Radhe! Interestingly, the actor who made his debut with Mira Nair’s Monsoon
Wedding in 2001 also completes two decades in the industry. Riding high through the journey, working on his terms has seen Randeep hit a few lows too. But the star’s risen like a Phoenix each time to claim his spot in the sun! In an exclusive interview, the man du jour Randeep Hooda talks about completing 20 years in the industry, uniting the actor and the star in his performances and discovering his love and a flair for action. Excerpts:
You complete two decades in Bollywood this year. How do you look back at your journey? A lot of ups, downs, questioning oneself, adjusting, soul-searching, a lot of gratefulness… A sense of validation that I was somewhat choosing films that were ahead of their time. When I went for my audition for Monsoon Wedding (2001) little did I know that I will be giving this interview two decades later and it’s a great feeling that one stuck to the convictions through the journey. In 20 years, I’ve not done many films as compared to a lot of other people, taken three years off in between for just one role, but I’m really grateful that the filmmakers still see a lot of untapped potential in me and offer me new things. I have tried to follow art which is essentially a business in our country, but in that space too I have done commercial films, independent films, experimental films. Looking back, it’s been a journey of more or less being a student who learnt bad habits, got rid of them, had a chip on my shoulder. I was very brash to start with, but it’s all changed into humility and things that really matter are the ones that I’ve now been involved in, the rest have fallen by the wayside. There are a lot of movies you wanted to make but could not make, many you could. All in all it has been a very fruitful experience. Now I think I’m at a place where a lot of things are in equilibrium. Also vis-a-vis the opportunity that I have now also has a larger fan-base which are the consumers of your product in which you try and put in some art (laughs)! I’m very grateful for all the opportunities and I’m still very driven, still very interested in my work, still looking for answers, still looking for ways to better myself, still growing into being the actor that I probably can be. So yes, a very interesting journey and I hope that there are two more decades left if not more (laughs). You’ve been fearless when it comes to choosing your roles even if they were offbeat and like you said ahead of their time. Has that process of choosing your films changed over the years? You choose the best of what you get. I’m not the kind who goes out and panders to anyone, so whatever I get I try to choose the best from it. I try and keep doing new things and if there’s something I haven’t done or I like the people involved in it, I’ll go for it. Yes, I’ve been quite fearless in my choices, done all kinds of genres – from Highway to Bombay Talkies to Jism to Main Aur Charles. So I hope to keep choosing and I hope to keep being fearless in my choices. What has changed though is that earlier I used to look just for my roles, like what am I getting to do, but over time I’ve come to realize that you’re just a cog in the wheel of the entire process. So while you would still work as hard, if the makers do not give that kind of a platform to your work then there are lesser people who watch it, translating to lesser money, and then it becomes more difficult for you the next time to make a film. collaborate with, not just a good story to tell or a good part for me to do. Now it’s also important to see if they would give it a platform that a movie needs to reach people. Well, you seem to be on a roll with Extraction and now Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai… Yes Radhe is as commercial as it can get, and then there was Extraction which was watched by people across the world. So in doing these two films backto-back I have covered most of the globe it seems (laughs). The more people watching your films means more money coming into the coiffeurs of the producers, and that is very reassuring. And as I said, you are doing the art in it, but ultimately it’s a business product, so to be a part of two of the biggest commercially hit and massy entertainment films and that too in action I’m quite thrilled about it. When you talk about the commercialisation of art, have you had to compromise in trying to maintain the balance? I have been in both boats! I’ve been critically acclaimed and I’ve also seen commercial success. So I wouldn’t say compromise, I would call it adapting. But this ability to adapt myself has probably always been the cornerstone of my career, because I’ve always gone and adapted myself to the role and the genre instead of imposing myself on it and that is also what has created the variation in my work and led to my so-called indie-commercial thing. So you can look at it as compromise, but I look at it as adapting and I will do it to the best of my abilities.You know, the one thing I realized with experience is that nobody owes you anything, the world doesn’t owe you anything. So, there’s no ‘I should’ve been given this or I should’ve gotten that’. You just have to keep contributing and hope for the return, so I have been adaptive as an actor as well as in my choice of work, I won’t call it compromise.
All I want and I’m trying to be is a part of some amazing films and grateful that my work is getting appreciated. You know what they say in our business, something that I never believed in… ki dikhta hai to bikta hai, so yes I had not bikaoed for many years in between. And yet I’ve come back and gotten work and am being appreciated, so I’m very grateful. I don’t look back at it with anything except a sense of gratefulness that I got to work again
So, are your choice of roles finding a better balance between being a commercially viable star and an actor pursuing his art? Well, yes, I feel there is a better balance now. In India there’s a notion that there are stars and there are actors, I hope to make them one, hopefully sooner than later! Talking about adapting, you’re easily the king of biopics with all those mind-blowing transformations… Yes I have done a few biopics, but I don’t choose a film to change myself or to show off my ability to do all that. Those transformations are damn hard and I hate it (laughs). It’s physically, mentally and emotionally just so exhausting, so no, I don’t choose a film for that. I choose a film and while exploring it, you try to feel what the real person’s life was like, what he thought or felt, and in that scrambling you make that character yours. But having said that, it’s also the most liberating feeling that you are absolutely somebody else and you give yourself the opportunity to take on the life that you’re supposed to live through the script. Yes, its

hard work, but I feel very driven for it. How’re you taking to the action-hero tag? It’s very strange that there was a certain image that people had of me relating me to violence, tough guy roles, though I had never really hit anybody with my fist in a movie ever until I did Do Lafzon Ki Kahaani where I play a Mixed Martial Arts fighter. Even then it was in the ring that I was a fighter. So, when I did Extraction, I did not know that the action was going to be so elaborate, but I found that my body responds well to it. My body and mind become one when pulling off those action sequences. So it is now, 20 years later that I have discovered this flair for action movies, and I’m quite enjoying this space and genre and I hope I get to do some more, which are a step further from what I’ve already done in Extraction and even Radhe. Of course, I’ll have to keep doing other genres too, but yes, doing action has been great especially what we did in Extraction, which is real high-grade action even by Hollywood standards. Even the action sequences in Radhe. It was fun jumping off a helicopter and surviving it, I felt quite resurrected I must say (laughs).

You share an interesting camaraderie with Salman Khan on screen, what about off it? We have shared a great bond off screen too. We’ve had our ups and downs in the friendship we share, but there’s obviously an elder brother kind of thing we have. You know he’s always given me good advice, not that I’ve always followed it (laughs), so yes it’s just been a bond where there’s a sense of respect and our work together… Kick and then Sultan. With Radhe it has gone a notch higher, it’s also a Salman movie, so it’s his generosity that he really wanted me to do this part, so the things he says are ‘kabhi sun bhi liya kar’ (laughs). Is this another thing that’s not changed in 20 years, you still don’t listen to advice? (Laughs) No, I listen to it a lot more now, though in certain ways I still don’t. What’s the best advice you’ve got? Learn your lines and don’t bump into furniture!
What’s the one life lesson that you follow as a rule professionally? There’s no hard and fast rule really that I have. I’m very approachable, listen to the director, turn up on time and I’m always interested in what I’m doing so I feel that these are the things you can give to your collaborators - your directors, your producers - which go a long way in making a film. On top of that if you deliver a good performance then that’s just an icing on the cake. Earlier on, I used to burden myself and others sometimes with my way of working but I don’t do that anymore. Now it’s a more personal process and I find more freedom in doing that. Which have been your most special roles or the ones you’d June 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 13

I have learnt a lot of great things due to the proximity to Naseer Bhai, whether it’s his workshop or theatre troupe which has really made me find my own self, as an artiste, as an expressionist. Now I listen less to performance advice and more to life advice.

COVER STORY into the people’s conscious and then there was Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster that I liked. Then subsequently many films, Highway of course is one of the roles that I’m remembered for more, then Sarbjit more for in your face transformation though I rarely played myself in the movie, but yes that was another turn around. And then Extraction, and now Radhe. I have basically tried to do the best in every role whether I am doing a film with Bhatts or Karan Johar or Prawal or Imtiaz. But the most special film for me, maybe because it’s been closer to the milieu I grew up in is Laal Rang, which didn’t get such a great release, but has become quite a cult film on the OTT. You had given almost three years to prepping for Battle for Saragarhi which ultimately did not take off. Does that make you bitter with the workings of the industry or do you take it in your stride? My kind of preparation or approach doesn’t really work in the industry. I mean Aamir Khan does that, but otherwise it doesn’t really work, we’re not conducive to that kind of filmmaking. So I found it very hard to struggle through it. I did the best I could, but you do feel disappointed. The disappointment is not because of the hard work you put in or about your time, what hurts is that it didn’t reach the audience and I couldn’t share this character with them. But it wasn’t forced upon me, it was something I took upon myself. I went to the Golden Temple and vowed that I’m not not going to cut my kesh till this movie reaches to fruition. It took three years to reach the fruition that it’s not going to go forward. At the same time I got Extraction and I was reluctant doing it because I’d have to cut my beard. But then I went to the Gurudwara, I apologized and in tears I sheared off my navel-length beard and hair that was upto my hips. But it did take me a long time to get out of it. So, yes it does get disappointing not sharing that role with the audience, but at the other end it was your choice and you have to own it and move forward. At that time I did not realize that not just physical, there was a mental state of gloom that I kept fighting. Now that I look back I was very depressed, but then one has to pull oneself out of it. consider the milestones in your career? Roles that matter to you and what they do to you professionally are two totally different things really. My roles would be Monsoon Wedding, then D, which was really my first Bollywood film that made me the blue-eyed boy for a while, till they realized that I’m not going to pander to them and that I’ve got my own way of doing things (laughs). Then after that a milieu of interesting films that I did, one of them was Rang Rasiya, which was released very late, and then I came back with Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai that brought me back
But inspite of these setbacks, you’ve always risen like a Phoenix each time, come back and made a statement with your performance? I’m humbled. But it’s been totally unintentional. All I want and I’m trying to be is a part of some amazing films and grateful that my work is getting appreciated. You know what they say in our business, something that I never believed in… ki dikhta hai to bikta hai, so yes I had not bikaoed for many years in between. And yet I’ve come back and gotten work and am being appreciated, so I’m very grateful. I don’t look back at it with anything except a sense of gratefulness that I got to work again. Instead of having a

chip on my shoulder about it, I’m just grateful for the opportunity. So how much does the Box Office standing and success matter to you? What a great film does to you is that it simply gives you another chance to do a good movie or a movie with good people attached. And if that works out you get another good one and that’s all there is to it. Of course BO matters because the movies are a business, not just art. For me, Extraction and Radhe coming one after another will hopefully add to the ease of making other projects that’s all. Your hunky appeal has a loyal fan base… I’m grateful for that love. I have tried to make myself all kinds of ugly and real in many characters, but somehow the people have been able to see my soul in them. So I don’t know, inspite of the physicality of some of the unwanted things you are doing on screen they still love you and I’m very grateful to them. I really don’t know what it is, and I have a sneaky feeling that the day I know what it is I won’t have it anymore. I definitely don’t let my real-self over-power any of my characters. Probably that’s what works. You certainly attract a lot of female attention, what do you find attractive? I don’t know. It’s all subjective. Every one’s got their different take on what’s attractive. As for me, I’m attracted to nice eyes and smile. Apart from movies, you’ve been equally passionate about your equestrian pursuits? Over the years I have left movies because I’ve been riding competitions, or show jumping, but I don’t do that anymore. I quit playing polo early and now it’s mostly show-jumping. It’s been a couple of years since I competed properly, but I’m looking forward to doing it again. I always felt that movies are opinion based, so you can manipulate an opinion into something good or bad. But in sports it’s a much more definite sense of achievement, so I really like it. I’ve been into this sport since school and I still tease my classmates that all of them can’t play the sport they used to back then, but I still can play my sport which I chose very wisely (laughs). You’ve also been very vocal about environmental issues, and have also been the UN Ambassador for aquatic migratory species of birds? I’ve always been very connected to the dirt and the grass. Even as a kid, I’ve loved being around animals although back then it was farm animals. If you are interested in something you learn more about it and that’s what I did. Over the years one realizes the folly the humankind is making and the course of our destructive human behavior. So I got into it thanks to my friend Afroz Shah with his beach-cleaning that started in Mumbai and the drive is still on and is expanding. I realized that if there’s something that we have to fight for it should be the environment. This is something I’m very vocal about and I feel privileged that I have a voice in it and I have been able to influence some people, somewhere, and I hope to do even more. Any plans of making your own documentary on these? I have done a lot of those things, written down shows, penned articles on it, but you know I have a job to do in another kind of filmmaking industry so that becomes a bit hard. But yes, I will

It’s what is called the conservation photography, where you bring back images of places and understand the eco-systems and animals that inhabit them, hoping that people go, experience it, but also do their bit towards preserving it.
definitely delve into it and I do have a few ideas for it. So more on that will happen but it has to be something that will make a difference when I do it, not just to get my mug on TV. What are the projects you’re looking forward to? I’m looking at a few projects overseas, so that’s one, and of course here as well. As I told you I’ll be looking at a lot more action films. There’s a comedy coming up to break things up a little, Unfair and Lovely. Then I have ventured in the OTT space as well with Jio’s Inspector Avinash. So I’m already venturing into these spaces and I hope something comes and blindsides me one of these days. Something that I have not thought of and I feel like this is exciting. DID YOU SPEND A LOT OF TIME PREPPING FOR THE SONG WITH AAMIR KHAN AND HOW GOOD A DANCER IS HE? I prepped for 7 days for Har Funn Maula. For the first few days I was dancing alone and the rest of the days, it was together with Aamir. I must say I was very impressed and he’s done a great job for not being a trained dancer. The thing I was most worried about turned out to be the best, and that is how good his grip is! When your dancing partner needs to hold you, or lift you up, you always worry about if he knows how to do it, and with Aamir it was just amazing! I wasn’t scared at all to fall backwards onto his hand, or when I jump up on him before the spin, because of his grip being so secure. The reason I mention this specifically is because I’ve had those experiences with trained dancers, where they’ve dropped me! YOU ARE TRAINED IN INDIAN DANCE IN SWEDEN AND THAT IS UNUSUAL. DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU LL COME TO BOLLYWOOD? I fell so in love with Bollywood movies and its dance. There was a soul connection immediately, the moment I saw it on the Swedish television for the first time! What spoke to me was, that the story and emotions were felt, not only by the dance steps, but also from the facial expressions and that amused me so much that I immediately wanted to learn the Indian dance forms. So, I did not only learn Bollywood dance, but took classes in Bharatnatyam and little bit of Kathak, where there’s lot of face expressions being taught. There was always that feeling inside of me, that kept telling me, you have to go to India and try your luck! I was always filled with so much excitement, as if Iwas already in Bollywood! Every time I danced, I used to feel I’m a Bollywood actress, and so I can maybe say that yes, my soul knew I will come to Bollywood one day. It was just a matter of me physically helping myself to get on a flight and come to India!

Madhuri Dixit is the dancing queen whot has inspired me ever since the first Bollywood movie I watched, which is Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali sir. What I love about Madhuri mam is that she is graceful and her soul is seen through her eyes, when she dances. She is a performer who is truly being one with the song and that, it is being felt. WHAT ARE YOU FUTURE FILM ROLES? They are all I’ve ever dreamt of. WHAT ARE YOUR DUBAI MEMORIES ? A fond memory is when I went for horse riding in the desert during the sunset! That was just magical, and second I’ll say is when I got to kiss a dolphin! Dubai is a city that allows you to experience so many amazing things, and let’s not forget to mention the tasty food too! WHAT HAS THE LOCKDOWN TAUGHT YOU? That living in the present moment is all that matters, and all we should do. Because the past is the past, and the future only depends on what we choose to do in the ‘now’. YOUR CHILDHOOD WAS FILLED WITH STORIES WITH SINCE YOUR MOM IS A STORY TELLER. ANY INDIAN STORY YOU REMEMBER WELL ? I grew up mostly hearing about the Greek mythology, which is very similar to the Indian one, I’ve understood! When I move to india, I was given the name Krishna by the Indian family I was staying with, and I liked it, because I’ve heard many stories about Lord Krishna which I really find interesting and connect with!
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING ON OTT PLATFORMS. WHAT MORE DO WE EXPECT ? I love the OTT platforms because it has given more opportunities to actors and filmmakers! My next projects I’m currently working on are movies. However due to the current covid situation I don’t really know if they’ll be released in the theater or on a OTT platform. Nobody really knows right now about the future, isn’t it! WHAT ATTRACTS YOU ABOUT A ROLE ? There has to be performance and challenge in it. Just being a pretty face with few dialogues does not excite me at all and I’ve said no to many such roles. YOUR TRYST WITH LEARNING HINDI IS COMMENDABLE. WHAT WERE THE STUMBLING BLOCKS ? I simply believe that it’s a must, if I want to act in Bollywood cinema! Learning a language means, learning a culture and ways of thinking. In the beginning I wasn’t able to connect as much as I do today. Because I’ve learnt the language, and so I’ve understood things and connected to them on a deeper level. I’m able to express and explain myself better, and also understand everyone around me more, that today I will also say I’m indian in a big way! YOU SEEM TO HAVE A KNACK FOR PICKING UP INTERESTING PROJECTS AND STATEMENT MAKING ROLES? I would love to take credit for my skills of choosing projects that have worked well, but I’ll have to say that much of that has been luck. Also I feel I’m very fortunate to be here at a time when there’s a variety of roles available to choose from. Like 10 years ago, the roles and platforms were so limited, but today there’re so many options in terms of characters for women and scripts being written. So a lot has been about me being there at the right place at the right time. BUT WHAT’S BEEN THE DRAW FOR YOU FROM THE CHOICES AVAILABLE? I truly believe that artistes really kind of get what they want to do and what they are seeking. Of course along the way people may advise you differently in terms of your career, etc, but there are a number of things I consider when selecting a project. I look at the script, the role, the diversity of the role with respect to what I have done before. I see if it’s testing my skills, letting me do something new as an actor, explore a new facet of myself. So that does matter in my decision-making process. But if there’s one thing that’s becoming increasingly just as important for me is the set of people I work with. As an actor your job is to be vulnerable and I only want to work in a space that respects what you bring to the table and respects that vulnerability. WHAT ROLES WOULD YOU SAY HAVE BEEN THE GAME CHANGERS FOR YOU? There were different roles at different times. Qissa was a turning point for me as an actor, in terms of the kind of role I had, the kind of film it was, plus the director and co-actors I had. The film introduced me to the possibility of the wide range that I could perform as an actor. At that stage I had been around on the acting scene, but I had never done something so impactful, so that was a very encouraging thing. The kind of respect I got from Irrfan or Tisca Chopra or Tillotama shome changed the way I perceived my possibilities in performance. It is something I will always hold close to my heart. So, it introduced and exposed me to a different league of cinema. Mirzapur was the turning point in terms of popularity and the wide audience it reached to. Before Mirzapur, the projects that I had done were sort of in the independent space, the kind of audience I had was more niche. So, inspite of the larger commercial formats, films like Manto and Qissa had limited releases. But Mirzapur gave me access to a much wider audience and that gave me the constant engagement with the audience. BUT WEREN’T YOU AFRAID OF RISKS EVER? Of course yes! I’ve had my apprehensions and share of doubts with everything I’ve said a yes to. That continues to happen even today. You keep questioning yourself on your choices, even though the success probably gives you more confidence to go ahead and take more risks. In fact it gets harder because the stakes are higher as your career progresses. So I think I’m always wondering
and sometimes it’s just changing constantly. But at the moment it seems a correct decision, so it might be the best decision or it might be wrong, but it was the best decision I could do on that day. I take a call depending on what felt right at that moment. WHICH HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING FOR YOU PERFORMANCEWISE? Mirzapur I felt was challenging and different for me as I was trying to understand the space of a person that I don’t know and didn’t relate to at all. My character of Beena Tripathi in the series, has a certain body language and this character on paper was such that

when she walks into a room, she should draw attention to herself… not something outlandish but a magnetic quality. And I’m not like that in real life at all. I am the kinds to very happily and successfully blend into the background. But I totally enjoyed playing Beena Tripathi and it was so refreshing to play this character because of the contrast it presented in the real me and reel me! SO IS THAT WHY YOU TOOK ON THE ROLE IN THE FIRST PLACE? That’s always the desire as an actor to be able to not look like yourself or like the other characters you’ve done before. So when people watch and say so she can be this also, that’s a great compliment. HOW HAS LIFE CHANGED POST MIRZAPUR? Mirzapur had already created quite a buzz because it was a character very different from anything I had done before. But my other works like Delhi Crime, Lootcase have been equally impactful for me in that zone. WHAT IS THE GENRE THAT YOU ARE ATTRACTED TO THE MOST? Drama has been my preferred genre and I’ve had more experience now. But I’ve always been drawn to comedy and would definitely like to explore more of that. So, yes comedy is high on my list ahead. TELL US ABOUT PLAYING DR MIRA KAPOOR IN OUT OF LOVE AND NOW THERE’S SEASON 2 AS WELL? There were things about Dr Mira Kapoor that I understood and things that I didn’t. The show is set in a small town, and I grew up in a small town myself, so I understand the social dynamics of a town like that, where the lives of the people are intertwined with each other. The sense of community is very strong, at the same time there might be more interference than you might want or like. So that was a world I didn’t have trouble understanding. But the character is so unpredictable and that made it interesting to play. There are complex layers to a seemingly simple surface and I enjoyed playing that
layered character. HOW HAVE THE DYNAMICS CHANGED FOR ACTRESSES IN TERMS OF THE ROLES BEING WRITTEN FOR THEM TODAY? I think there’s been a huge change overall in the way women characters are written today… they are more nuanced and real. And I think women are finally being acknowledged as normal human beings who have desires too and they are unafraid to embrace that on screen now. Rather than just being objectified, they are being looked upon as characters with their own backstories and stories and that I think is a very positive change. And I have no shame in associating with women characters who are being shown to have desires too. And finally the overall quality of writing is improving, so that’s heartening, encouraging and empowering for an actor.

LOOKING BACK AT THE JOURNEY, ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE KIND OF ROLES COMING YOUR WAY AND YOUR CAREER GRAPH? To begin with, I never had a career graph in mind and I have just flown and grown with the roles. I did not come with a career path or with a set idea that this is where I want to reach. I had come to Mumbai only thinking that this is what I want to do for as long as I can.I guess as an artiste this is not something that you can plan anyway. What I most love about the journey though is that it’s most real. No two actors’ journeys can be compared, its individual, and I’ve always gone along with what enriches me as an actor and artiste. So the lack of strategy has been my only strategy (laughs). I’m just playing it as it comes and happy to embrace new things as they come and with the kind of decisions I have made so far in my career. Somewhere if I had a career path I mind then I would not have made these decisions so bravely. So, I think it’s a mix of things of not being externally tied down and being able to go where the work takes you. I really do enjoy that freedom of what you want to do with the work. Of course it’s a lot of luck and where you are at a given time, it’s a combination of all that so the journey is such that I’m very grateful for the kind of people I’ve had an opportunity to work with and the kind of roles I’ve gotten to play. SO HOW’RE YOU IN REAL LIFE? DO YOU RELATE TO ANY OF YOUR SCREEN CHARACTERS? Well, there may be bits and parts that you get a glimpse of once in a while I suppose because at the end of the day basic human emotions are the same universally. But no, there’s no one such character that I completely relate to. Also, how we are in real life changes with our experiences, so I am just simple and real. HOW DO YOU TAKE TO TAGS? I don’t believe in tags, so I don’t pay attention to them. If they are praiseworthy, then I embrace them if not, I don’t pay attention. I don’t believe in putting people or characters in any slots, neither do I feel the pressure or the disappointment of any labels good or bad! TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS Well, there’s a mix of new shows and some subsequent seasons like Season 2 of Out of Love. There are some other projects too, but currently it all depends on the lockdown and the dates and the projects that take off finally and when.

Fearless He has completed a decade in Hindi cinema and apart from his films, is known to be have promoted the ancient martial art form of Kalari Payattu worldwide. Counted among the top ten martial artists in the world, Vidyut Jamwal is in Dubai on a personal visit and Manju Ramanan chats up with him.
TEN YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY, HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK? With pride. Three months ago, my fan page called Jamwalians told me I am about to complete ten years in the film industry. I had no clue. When I saw their reactions, I saw this as big. Today I realise the value of it. For me, personally though, the first TV set I bought with my earnings in Mumbai was my first biggest achievement and I got a mithai dabba distributed to everyone including my ex-flat mate. The second time I celebrated was when I paid the rent of my flat by myself. My dog Salvador Dali cost me 25,000 rupees and I celebrated again. In these 10 years, the divine has been very kind and has let me be here in the film industry for a decade. ANY INCIDENTS WHERE YOU COULD HAVE GIVEN UP BUT REFUSED TO? My only competition are my injuries. It is never this guy or that guy. I don’t have a single tattoo but an injury imprints a memory. But you have to meet your injury. When your body is in pain, the mind doesn’t work. I had a terrible injury and was advised surgery but I let my body do the healing. Sometimes you have to defy what is taught to us and follow your inner rhythm. Also, I am a healer and know the human body minutely through my work with martial arts.

YOU ARE AVERSE TO THE WORD “STRUGGLE.” I don’t see ‘struggle’ in a negative way. If working hard is struggle, everyone works hard for a living. Why single out an actor? I am a trained martial artist. What I do looks easy because I do it with alacrity but how many years does it take to perfect it? If that is struggle then, everything else is struggle. But I have been fortunate. I have received help from people when I least expected it. YOU ARE A HEALER, SO YOU DON’T SEE HURT? Pain is good if you know how to take it. Don’t avoid it. Pain cannot be bigger than you. It is like this. When you do the full split, the small pains you have encountered have vanished because the bigger pain has made you reach the place where there is no pain. WHAT MAKES YOU CRY? Being overwhelmed makes me cry. When I see my mother beam with pride when someone asks her is I am her son, my eyes go moist. Crying can be a moment of ecstasy and a tear coming out of you could be a symbol of great happiness. It is like anger. Anger can be a good emotion and people who get angry are transparent people.
YOU COME FROM A CLASSICAL TRADITION OF MARTIAL ARTS AND THEN YOU COME INTO BOLLYWOOD, DID YOU HAVE ANY SETBACKS? No, I came with no expectations. I am not ambitious as a being. When I did a show in Canada and performed Kalari Payattupeople didn’t know what I was doing. For me the ambition was everybody should know Kalari. Today people in Bollywood and outside identify me with that form – it is the mother of all martial forms that dates back over 3000 years. It went from India to China when Bodhi Verma went there to start the Zen philosophy. When I went to China to receive the Jackie Chan award, they announced, Vidyut Jamwal, Kalari Payattu. It was my biggest moment. Sylvester Stallone wanted me to teach him Kalari. What better endorsement to the martial arts form? WHAT ARE THE STUNTS IN REAL LIFE THAT HAVE CHALLENGED YOUR BODY LIMITS? The stunts that people have watched me do in films and on TV is nothing compared to what I do in real life. On my birthday on December 10th, I went into a beehive dressed in ganji and track pants. The key is when

the bees are on you, don’t react. A little movement and they will bite. They will be everywhere including your ears, mouth etc but it all starts in your head. If you are determined that you can command it, nothing can stop you. Fear should be with you all the time but what you do with it, is important. When I have to jump between two buildings for instance, I have to have fear – I think of all pros and cons. What if my face gets hit? what if I slip? But I jump and let fear be there and after I have achieved my task, I thank God.
Amit Sadh is a great guy and a dear friend. He is madly curious and loves travelling just like I do. A genuine human being!
YOU HAVE GARNERED PRAISE FROM HRITHIK AND PINKY ROSHAN? Yes, there are very few people who acknowledge good things. When I won the Jackie Chan award, I was the only Indian to have won that award. When my name was included in the top martial artists in the world, I didn’t get a single call to congratulate me.There was a list of ten people across the world you shouldn’t mess with that had the name of the Russian president and it had me. So, when Pinky Roshan maam or Hrithik message me, I know that they are confident beings and sincerely mean what they say. I believe in something – when you are genuinely happy for others, you will get what you want. That is my secret formula of success. Be genuinely happy for your friends and people who have a spark. A few years ago, I visited my friend’s home and he had the best home I had ever seen and I was genuinely happy that he owned the place. I spent 30 minutes playing with his dog too. Amazingly enough, very soon I got a home and a dog like that. It just happened. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING FROM A SMALL TOWN? I remember working with a superstar kid and we were debating as to who knew India better. We decided a common destination to figure out who knew the place better.We norrowed down on Hampi. He was there for 45 days but knew little about the place. You cannot live in 5-star hotels and understand the vibe of a place. You have to mingle with people. That is the difference between travel and tourism. As for being from a small town, I can walk into a 5-star hotel and show respect to staff there including front office people. My sister used to have a job like that. Porters at airports train with me. They tell us how stars behave, They don’t even look at them. Most small towners have a sense of respect towards everybody. I have seen people with money, they have a great life, We have a better one.

A Sentence and several other cinematic gems, like The Lunchbox, Masaan, Haraamkhor,
Gangs of Wasseypur 1 and 2, Soorarai Pottru, Pagglait, amongst others, the celebrated producer clearly has her finger on the pulse of movie-lovers. In an exclusive interview with Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, Guneet Monga talks all about believing in her convictions and taking that leap of faith when it came to her cinematic journey
YOUR FILMS ARE A PERFECT BALANCE OF MEANINGFUL CINEMA AND MAINSTREAM COMMERCIAL FARE, SO WHAT’S THE VISION AS A PRODUCER? Each time I hear a story, I try to envision how far this story can travel and what could I do to make it happen. Each story that is made into a film has something unique to say. Commercial success does not always mean breaking into a 100 crore club, it is to ensure the budget doesn’t fail the project. Also I feel that meaningful cinema and commercial success are not mutually exclusive. Even if Box Office numbers are the only benchmark, then also a well-defined content-driven film could fare well at the Box Office once we strike the right balance. The Lunchbox, Stree, Badhaai Ho, Newton, Secret Superstar are few of those many marvels. The producer needs to have a clear vision to understand the pulse of the audience, the scope of the content and help derive a perfect amalgamation of the two to deliver. I always strive to provide the right packaging and the platform to the story while choosing the right format for it. With so many avenues now, it is exciting to break into various formats of storytelling.
TELL US MORE ABOUT THESE VARIOUS FORMATS OF STORY-TELLING THAT REFLECT IN THE DIVERSIFICATION OF YOUR PRODUCTIONS Every story starts as an idea and my journey is to make that idea reach as many people as possible. One has to see what format is best suited for that idea to grow into; be it a podcast, a short film, a series, a feature or a documentary. At Sikhya Entertainment we have five divisions catering to these various avenues of entertainment. I believe in making impactful cinema which led us to collaborate on Oscar-winning docu short Period. End of A Sentence. With the lockdown, the audience’s appetite for varied formats of content like audio shows, short format, snackable content became more evident. Meanwhile at Sikhya, we were already working on podcasts and audible shows, we made an anthology Zindagi inShort. This was over and above our feature films. We recently forayed into an innovative space of interactive thrillers with Kaun? Who Did It? and are currently working on a whole bunch of exciting projects for the future. GLOBAL MAP, ESPECIALLY THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL CIRCUIT… As a producer taking an independent film to a festival is a lot of work. My first film festival was in 2012 with That Girl in Yellow Boots that was selected at the Venice International Film Festival. From networking at least two months before the screening of the film, making global distributors sample your film, getting reviewers to cover it, one needs to travel, figure best dates, understand festivals… all this does take years of exposure and experience to build a network to be able to tell our unique stories globally. I feel as producers we should keep learning the ropes of festivals which present our work on a global stage.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR CINEMA COLLECTIVE INDIAN WOMEN RISING… I was curious and did some research to find out that we have only five per cent women directors in Indian film industry. I shared this with Tahira Kashyap Khurrana and we were determined to do something about it. We then approached Ekta Kapoor, who came on board in an instant and Indian Women Rising came into existence. With Ruchikaa Kapoor Shiekh, we four are determined to change this status quo for good. Karishma Dev Dube approached me for her short film Bittu which was contending for the Oscars. We turned all stones to ensure Karishma and her gem of a film was supported and travelled across. We made it to the top 10 in the Live Action short film category at the Oscars this year. Bittu was the first of many more exciting projects to come from IWR where it would be our constant endeavour to shine the spotlight on the deserving Indian female filmmakers. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY… I started as a 16-year-old in international films in Delhi. I was the photocopy girl, keeping stock of all the stationery in the office. Then I interned with Pan Nalin. I always had people skills, and the zest to make things happen, but I learnt a lot on that job. More projects followed and after a few years I became a Line Producer. With confidence came courage and I took the big leap of faith. I raised money and moved to Mumbai to be a producer at the age of 21. My first film as a producer was Say Salaam India. Soon, I started my own company Sikhya Entertainment and co-produced Dasvidaniya. In 2008, I had a huge personal tragedy and I lost both my parents. Being the only child, I had to wrap our lives in Delhi and move to Mumbai lock, stock and barrel. I took up a job at Balaji Motion Pictures as a supervising producer, I was then hired as the CEO at Anurag Kashyap Films in 2009. In the span of five years, I produced films like That Girl in Yellow boots, Gangs of Wasseypur 1 and 2 , Shaitan, Aiyyaa, Michael, Tasher Desh, Shahid, Trishna, Monsoon Shootout to name a few. I travelled with these films to international festivals and film markets, and got to network and expand my horizons. I was able to learn more about the treaties India had signed with various countries for co-production of films. Even though the IndiaFrance treaty was signed in 1985, I was the first one to use it for The Lunchbox and then Masaan. As AKFPL shut operations in 2013, I came back to running Sikhya Entertainment with The Lunchbox and followed by Masaan, Zubaan, Haraamkhor, Peddlers, Tigers, What will People Say, Ashram, Sorrarai Pottru and Pagglait. I now run my own production company with an incredible team led by

It’s important to understand the process and the business in and out, but the key is to show up with a smile every morning and keep sailing through, no matter how high or low the tide is. AT A TIME WHEN BO BUZZ WAS ALL ABOUT FILMS ENTERING 100 CRORE 300 CRORE CLUBS, WHAT WAS THE THOUGHT PROCESS BEHIND BACKING GAME-CHANGING FILMS LIKE GANGS OF WASSEYPUR? Gangs of Wasseypur was ahead of its time and will remain a cult classic of Indian cinema for years to come. It was the unique vision of Anurag Kashyap that made the film that it is today. I strongly believe in the power of story and the vision of the maker, but at the time a film’s success was measured by its Box Office and GOW was obviously offbeat. TODAY COMMERCIAL CINEMA IS BEING REDEFINED AND CONTENT IS GAINING PROMINENCE. WHAT WOULD YOU ATTRIBUTE THIS PARADIGM SHIFT AMONG AUDIENCE? I think we lay a lot of importance on dividing content and commercial films. It’s all part of the business cycle. We need big ticket releases as much as we need smaller films which continue to work on calculated risks. Like any other industry, this is also a demand and supply driven business. We will continue to see all kinds of films as long as there is an audience for it. It is equally true that with democratisation of content and easy access to both regional and world cinema, Indian audience is sampling much more diverse content than before. The shift is reflective in their choices too. As makers, it has to be our constant goal to make not just what sells, but also resonates with the ethos of the audience and in our case, also move a needle when it comes to impacting the viewer. I do feel we have witnessed a change with Indian cinema coming of age. For instance, there was a time when going to film festivals was considered a taboo, today it adds validation to the content and is celebrated.
new markets providing platforms to not just filmmakers but also actors, writers in order to expand their base. WHICH OF YOUR FILMS ARE CLOSEST TO YOUR HEART? Pagglait came from an extremely personal space. As we say it in the film too - it was driven by divine will and I am extremely grateful for it. Making this film happen was cathartic for me. Losing family at a young age, I deeply connect with the story and each day I feel humbled that we could put it out the way we did. Pagglait resonated with people who needed to heal and rediscover themselves. As a filmmaker, what more could one dream of. I’m humbled beyond words. WHAT ARE THE MILESTONES IN YOUR JOURNEY? Every project has taught me something, the successes have taught me gratitude and the failures drove me to strive better. I believe in learning and every assignment that I worked on and has added to my knowledge and abilities is a milestone for me. I learnt everything that I know on the job, making each film a piece of my heart. If I have to point fingers at a select few, I would say the thunderous applause with a standing ovation at the Cannes film festival for The Lunchbox echoes in my mind even today. The journey of a short documentary film Period. End of Sentence all the way till the Oscars has been very dear. And now Pagglait. A BAFTA NOMINEE, AND BEING AMONGST THE FIRST PRODUCERS FROM INDIA TO BE INDUCTED IN THE ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES, TO YOUR MOST RECENT HONOUR, HOW IMPORTANT ARE THESE RECOGNITIONS? Achievements and awards are always special, they sort of validate the hard work and dedication we exhibit into our work and encourage us to live up to the expectations the honours confer upon us. The Chevalier dans I’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) was a pleasant surprise for me. I grew up watching French movies, and then to be recognised by the same country is an honour. It fills me up with humility as well as inspires me to roll up my sleeve and continue to do more and better!
IN TODAY’S WORLD OF OTT DO YOU SEE YOUR FILMS BECOMING ALL THE MORE RELEVANT? It took years, multiple projects navigating through failures and success gaining invaluable lessons at every turn to acquire the recognition that we have today. There was always a hunger for content, OTT has forced to open

SO, YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO BE AN ACTOR? I don’t remember clearly when it happened. Being born into a family where both my parents are actors, I grew up in film locations. That is where I wanted to be and what I wanted to do. I knew that you had to work a lot. But there is a right time for everybody. The audience has to like you. YOU HAD AN ELEPHANT AS A PET WHILE GROWING UP? Yes. His name was Kannan and he passed away a few years ago. Elephants are a normal sight to Kerala but yes having a pet is not usual. But I have good memories.

All memories are good memories and I was working with Sathyan Anthikad who is like a godfather to me. I used to talk a lot during shoots but I was given ice creams as treats etc. I look back and think, what an idiot I was! HOW DID YOU REACT TO SATTAR FROM PAAVA KADHAIGAL WHEN YOU READ HIM? AND THAT VULNERABILITY … WAS UNUSUAL? All credit to Sudha Kongara maam. It takes a whole lot of courage to cast someone like me, an upcoming actor in a role like that. Thank you ma’m and then I thank myself for believing in myself though I had made a lot of bad decisions in the beginning of my career. I had taken a decision of quitting acting and was doing a theatre course abroad when Sudha maam sent me the script. She was offering me the role of Saravanan’s character but I wanted to play Sattar because his role made me cry. For me, personally, the whole process of representing a community was no joke. I was aware of my responsibility to portray them on screen. Sattar’s character is partly based on a book but I had to make the character my own. A lot of Sattar is real. THERE IS A KIND OF DEFENSELESSNESS IN SATTAR’S CHARACTER? Yes, I agree. Every guy has a feminine side to him and I had to evoke it. Once I broke that barrier, everything was very accessible to me. I could feel the emotion. While it was good for the film, it wasn’t good for me. I found it very hard to get back to my real self. I spent a lot of time home with my mother and sister and they had to face my mood swings. They were at the receiving end. I am thankful to them. End of the day, you complete your work and go home and that is your nurturing space. ARE YOU CHOOSY ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO? You don’t have to do a lot of films. Quality is more important than quantity and if I am not 100 percent into it, passionate about it, I don’t think I will do the film. I select the character that make me work hard and challenge me. In any way, I don’t have to be the lead in the film – even one scene done with great conviction is good.
WHO ARE THE BOLLYWOOD ACTORS YOU HAVE ADMIRED? I remember watching Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in Chennai. I personally connected to SRK and I am a huge fan. Of late I am fond of the work of Vicky Kaushal and all the new actors. Everyone is improving – very hard to choose a favourite. YOU ARE KNOWN FOR YOUR MIMICRY LIKE YOU DAD. DO YOU CONTINUE WITH IT? Sudha mam had directed Soorarai Potru that starred Suriya and I used to mimic Suriya onstage a lot. Unknowingly, my body language during my shoots used be like him and Sudha maam checked me every time it happened. I had to unlearn it. It was very difficult. Somewhere or the other, there is an influence of one character over the other and to erase it, takes time. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE FILMS OF YOUR DAD AND MOM? Tenali, Shesham and a lot of my dad’s films and for mom, it is Vadakkunokkiyantram WHAT ARE YOUR MEMORIES ASSOCIATED WITH DUBAI? Dubai is like a second home to me. I have a cousin uncle who lives here and I have been to Dubai for a lot of events since the Malayalaees are abundant there. I also shot Argentina Fans there and have beautiful memories associated with Dubai.
YOU SHARED SCREEN SPACE WITH YOUR DAD IN THE AMAZON PRIME SERIES PUTHAM PUDU KAALAI ? We shot this film after we shot Thangam. It was during the lockdown. Amazon Prime had contacted Sudha maam and I got lucky again. She was looking for actors who are quarantined at home and could shoot. Dad and I me worked together after 22 years. Though we didn’t have any scenes together (I play his younger self in the film), it was an amazing experience.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE OTT SERIES/FILMS YOU HAVE WATCHED AND ENJOYED? The Serpent on Netflix is really good, so is Shadow and Bones. I loved My Octopus Teacher. Good content is exploding into OTT and times of the over-dramatic hero have gone. YOUR FUTURE PROJECTS? I am working on a Malayalam - Tamil bilingual film called Rajni. Social media is getting
less toxic
today
Says actor Suniel Shetty who has been relentless in his work towards helping NGOS and amplifying their causes to battle the current pandemic. Manju Ramanan chats up with the actor, producer and businessman. THE CELEB GETS ALL THE CREDIT WHEN NGOS SHOULD He is one of the celebrities who we can count among the altruistic people helping out the Covid 19 affected. Self-effacing, humble and matter of fact, he stands up for his own community of Bollywood actors, some of who are silently helping out and donating time, money and resources to those affected. “It is a chain of people helping out and that includes activists, common people who want to pitch in, celebs as well as front line workers, donors etc. But what happens in the bargain is that people only name the celebrity.” The important thing to understand here is that the celeb is here for the amplification of the cause. There are populations of people who are working on ground for the same issue.” I am hesitant to take credit for these things that’s why,” he adds. “If I am helping out in Mumbai, I am only reaching out to my pool of people. There are people helping each other in the different parts of India. It is heartening to see so many people come together to support each other.” Shetty is all praise for Mr Amitabh Bachchan who he feels epitomizes the adage “Neki kar dariya mai dal.” (Do good and tell no one). “I admire him for the work he does and doesn’t care to talk about it. That is exactly how it should be. It is about blessings, karma, reaching out and more”.
PEOPLE HAVE REALLY HELPED EACH OTHER The deluge of help that has come from the world across is heartening. “Some people are spreading awareness, some are working on the first mile, some on the last mile – and all of them are important. We have an NGO which we have been running for more than 30 years. In the last few days, the entire team checked out the supplies of the essentials, coordinated for the logistical issues, and other restrictions due to the lockdown. We got the necessary permits and now the idea is to reach out to these underprivileged families by providing them grains, groceries and other essentials. Ours is not a temporary solution and we are looking at doing this for the long term till the time these people don’t stand back on their own feet,” he says. “At a time like this, even a Rs 10 donation makes a huge difference. My own staff has donated whatever they can so it is really the thought that matters. A lot of people have reached out to help in their own way. The idea is to make sure that the supplies of families especially with children are taken care of. This is the time to be with them and to let them know that we are together in this,” he explains. The actor has also reached out to with special needs children, “The pandemic has impacted each one of us. And for some, the impact is much harder. Our school has a lot of kids who are hearing and speech impaired. They use a hearing aid for which

they need batteries. It was difficult to procure them but we have somehow managed to do it. SOCIAL MEDIA IS GETTING KINDER? Shetty also agrees that social media is less toxic today. “Social media seems kinder today and people are bridging the gap between the providers and the needy. But there are still people who are doing nothing but take pleasure in criticizing those who are doing work. It hurts when you see them talk ill of your colleagues who are working hard and are silent about it,” he adds. Ask him whether the kinder actor will be more popular in the future, Shetty answers with a yes and a no. “Commerce has its place in the world and the one willing to spend will be popular and liked. But today celebrities with a heart will have a stronger fan base and a far more involved fan base compared to those who haven’t done much.” Another pertinent point he raises is that this is also the time for audiences and the population to be discerning. “A lot of stars work overtime on their PR and today is a fertile ground to show how compassionate you are. People will see through PR versus real work. You don’t need to broadcast all that you do,” he laughs. Shetty’s NGO has been working in the area of preventing child trafficking and child abuse. “Today children are most affected. They have been home for two years. They haven’t met friends; their classes are online. Unemployment, the inability to step out have taken a toll on parents and the effects can be seen in the family and the way children are treated sometimes. It has a long-term effect on them,” he adds. Averse to the world where we are talking to our screens rather than to each other across the table, Suniel Shetty narrates how he hates to talk to his mom in Mangalore over a zoom call. “I want to be in a world where I go meet her and talk just to her, watch her and soak in her energy. Not talk to a screen that has her,” he adds. THE SOUTHERN SOJOURN Shetty has been seen in a host of Southern movies of late. In fact, he has returned to Southern cinema after 27 years. “I had thought I had forgotten acting after taking a break after 4 years. I wasn’t well versed with the Southern languages but they thought of me and that was heartening. I had to learn the pauses, the body language etc. People in the South treated me with so much respect and love,” he adds. In total awe of his co-star Rajnikanth, Shetty is amazed at the way the legend switches on and off his roles. “He is punctual to a T and when he wears his makeup, he is a director’s actor, following all cues his director gives him. He is very polite and loving to everyone on set too. Once his makeup is off, he gets into a Zen space. There is a godly aura around him and he is

In the middle of the pandemic last year I had to drive to my hospital to get some paper work signed for the government and I got a fine at 3 pm for not wearing my mask. “When I was growing up, I was influenced by my grandmother who was always against the grid. She is the first woman in Dubai to drive a car. My mother Dr. Husnia Gargash is the first gynecologist of the UAE. So, it was natural for me to never look at issues such as gender parity because a lot of battles had already been fought for me. “There was never a concept of why are you doing what you are doing and that was so liberating,” she says. An MBA in Hospital Science Management from the UK and then furthering her education with the 3rd largest university in South America and Spain, Ghada started the Gargash Hospital last year with her mother. “While other countries haven’t managed the pandemic well, the UAE has been very effective in containing the virus,” she says. It is because we let our governments do their jobs. We don’t question them. One strict lockdown for a month followed by two months of curfew timings curtailed the pandemic. By the end of the year over 80 percent of the population will be vaccinated and Dubai will go mask-less.” “The vaccination might not make you test negative but you will not be able to spread it. You could be asymptomatic and yet test positive but you will be

ooking at Dubai’s history over the past twenty years, one would be fascinated by how this city has transformed and grown from a dream to a beautiful reality. All of this wouldn’t be possible without the consistent efforts of Dubai’s leaders who ensured safety to be the main pillar for stability. Dubai is ranked today as one of the safest cities in the world in every aspect. The low crime rate with a highly responsive emergency system makes the city a popular destination for residency, investment, business or tourism, which is remarkable, considering the city never sleeps. The city welcomes people from across the globe and promotes tolerance for all people regardless of ethnicity or religious belief, making it the most peaceful coexistence. It’s not just in the civic administration, but safety is in the DNA of Dubai. The city has laid down the most stringent laws in real estate development for protection against crime, disaster, health hazard and mishaps. The governing laws make investment extremely fast
and safe in every sector protecting the rights of all the parties. There have been several efforts and special drive put in place for road safety. Keeping in mind the open borders and extremely high volume of transiting passengers, the border security has been impeccable. Extremely important matters of child safety, drug abuse, e-crime and many modern-day hazards are difficult to exist in this super safe city. So how does it happen? Its not that safety does not get challenged in the city of Dubai; the authorities remain vigilant and demonstrate governance, swift decision, regulatory framework, and innovative infrastructure along with strict action to keep its people safe. The visionary leadership has intent and care for its people. One of the best examples of safety is how Dubai handled the COVID-19 pandemic; the government took bold and swift decisions. The result of which can be seen through the stretch of the nation with busy streets and bustling restaurants. The people of the UAE felt blessed as the government performed its role better than every other country and now you see people from other countries flocking to the UAE as a safe haven for their family. Amongst many priorities, two things every human wants to be in control of are happiness and future; it starts from safety; Dubai understands and delivers better than any other metropolis.

eing an Emirati and having lived in Dubai all my life, safety and security or the lack of it has rarely crossed my mind. I am grateful to our leadership for always prioritizing public health and safety. This is particularly evident when looking at the data. More than 80% of the country’s population consists of expatriates. These expats would not shift base to the UAE or Dubai if this country did not safeguard their lives, well-being and assets. The sense of security thus allows them to focus on raising their children, advancing their career and focusing on their personal development without fear. A recent competitiveness report that took into consideration 100 indicators for safety ranked Dubai among the top 10 safest cities in the world. This is reassuring to the say least, however
having lived in this city for my entire life, I was not surprised by this data. I only had the realization of how safe Dubai is when I moved to the UK in the year 2014 to pursue post-graduate degree in the UK. For me, it was reasonable to leave my belongings behind me for a short while in a public area or to not have any access codes into residential buildings. My UK-based friends considered my behavior reckless and it took me a while to get used to keeping a check on my belongings. Safety and security is a fundamental right of every individual. Cities that have failed to provide people this fundamental right fail to progress. Successful cities are built on people-centricity and their ability to put people at the center of progress and innovation. Dubai is a shining example of such a city. June 2021 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 47

TELL US ABOUT YOUR LOVE FOR DUBAI Yes, I do love Dubai and it feels like my second home, even though I only come here for shoots. But in the future I’d definitely want to shift here. It’s my dream to own a beautiful house in Dubai. YOU SEEM TO BE LIVING IT UP IN THE FAST LANE WITH ONE HIT MUSIC VIDEO AFTER ANOTHER, WHAT WAS THE TURNING POINT IN YOUR LIFE? You know you have a dream and you just know what you want from life and what your heart wants. Well, I’ve just gone after my dreams and I’m very happy with where my dreams have taken me. Having said that, I’m very choosey about my work and not in a rush to reach anywhere. I have a few dreams, but they are important and I’m fulfilling them. As for the turning point, it was undoubtedly Bigg Boss. Before that I have done TV shows and albums in Punjabi industry where people knew me, but in Bollywood it was Bigg Boss that got me here and now everyone seems to know who Mahira is. Now I’m working towards bringing more such turning points in life (laughs). It’s just been a start now. YOU MAKE QUITE A STYLE STATEMENT WITH YOUR FASHION SENSE… I don’t dress up to impress or show off to anyone, I love doing it for myself. And I have been like this since my childhood, I like dressing up. I’m a huge Kareena (Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan) fan and she’s my inspiration. So for me, it was like when I grow old I will do this, when I become an actor I will do that. So that’s been my real-life class, watching myself in the mirror and training to dress up and I enjoy styling and fashion. Even today, I’m pretty much the same when it comes to my love for dressing up.

IS THAT A GENRE YOU ARE DRAWN TO? I always prefer acting first where I can perform. I don’t look for things like, ‘oh she’s looking cute or pretty!’ What I want to hear is that, ‘wow she’s acted so well or her performance is something that I will remember’, so for me the genre is not important. There should be a variation, so even when it comes to choosing songs and doing music videos, there’s a variation. Like one of the most recent songs ‘Nazaraa’ that Paras and I did with Wadali Brothers, it wasn’t like anything we had done before. YOU ARE ALSO DOING A MUSIC VIDEO WITH ASEES KAUR? Yes, I shot two songs in Dubai and one is with Asees Kaur and other with Afsana Khan. WHAT ABOUT COMING UP WITH YOUR OWN SINGLE? I’m a very bad singer, I can’t sing (laughs). Haan maybe in the future. See, I like to bring out one facet of my personality at a time and till I don’t believe that I’m perfect in something, I won’t be ready to come out with it. I am used to listening to a ‘wow’, so people should go wow when they hear me sing, not say that hey she can sing!
SO WHAT DO YOU RELATE TO MORE IN REAL LIFE – THE SIMPLE GIRLNEXT-DOOR OR THIS ULTRA-GLAM-GAL? That’s my secret! (Laughs) I’m a child at heart and just enjoy life. I presented a very strong self on Bigg Boss, so people would take me seriously and respect my opinions too, but to be honest I’m like this naughty, mischevious kid. Of course when it comes to facing the camera, I can switch into any character and that’s how I like to surprise my audience. WHAT SPACE DO YOU ENJOY MORE, TV OR MUSIC VIDEOS? I’m very moody so I have phases. Like right now it’s the music video phase. But post the pandemic, I might switch to something else. WHAT ABOUT BOLLYWOOD OR OTT? I will consider a good script, but to be honest, I haven’t gotten anything interesting enough yet. And I’m in no rush to enter films, so it’s not something I worry about or get depressed thinking about why am I not acting in movies! I want to make a name for myself, but I am happy with what I do. In fact after Bigg Boss I had several offers including a few webseries, but back then I rejected it all. I was skeptical that I can’t do web or can’t do bold scenes, so I had seven web-series offered but I had my inhibitions. Later when I did become open to web-series, two were finalised, but then they were halted due to the pandemic. But yes there are a few in pipeline. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR EQUATION WITH PARAS Paras and I are real and natural. We don’t pretend to please anyone or hide anything in fear. Ghost laughters Bollywood’s going all out celebrating its new-found love for the lesser-explored genre of horror-comedies on screen. Aakanksha Naval-Shetye checks out some of the films in this genre coming up soon
While horror-comedy is not a new genre in Bollywood, it’s been a largely unexplored one and the films can really be counted on fingertips – right from Kishore Kumar’s Bhoot Bangla to Akshay Kumar’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Amitabh Bachchan’s Bhootnath, to name a few! However, the Rajkummar Rao – Shraddha Kapoor starrer
B h e d i ya This horror-comedy will have Varun Dhawan transforming into a werewolf. The Stree duo – producer Dinesh Vijan and director Amar Kaushik – reunite for Bhediya that also stars Kriti Sanon, Abhishek Banerjee and Deepak Dobriyal.
Stree seemed to have changed that and spurred by its success, filmmakers are now increasingly discovering the potential of this genre. Most recently there was Laxmii and Roohi. There was also the OTT laughter scare-fare web-series Aapkey Kamrey Mein Koi Rehta Hai. And now the months ahead have several more Bollywood stars tapping into this genre including Katrina Kaif and Varun Dhawan and there’s a slew of films lined up. Now the makers are back for round 2 with Kartik Aryan stepping in for the second installment in the horror-comedy franchise. The film also stars Kiara Advani and Tabu.
Roc k e t Ga ng Tipped to be a dance horror-comedy, the film stars Aditya Seal and Nikita Dutta and also marks the directorial debut of ace choreographer Bosco Martis. Though touted to be a family entertainer, the film is said to have hints of the horror element clubbed with comedy too.

For the last four years, much before we got used to masks, DJ Emwee has appeared in masks in his Insta profile and when he plays music in clubs. A radio and media personality, he is voted as the world’s top 100 hip-hop DJs. Heavily tattooed, hair dyed in white, sporting black nail paint and pierced, he embodies the quintessential gothic look. Manju Ramanan tries to unravel the Chhattisgarh boy behind the glamour and the glitz!
WHY ARE YOU CALLED EMWEE? They are the initials of my father’s and my mother’s name. My actual name is MV Manu Nair. So, I changed it to its phonetic sense ‘emwee.’ ARE YOU ALWAYS MASKED? Yes. It is a great idea that Playfield Entertainment, the company that manages me, came up with. All public photos of mine have me in mask. I quite like it. When I am, onstage or performing, my mask is on. It is intriguing and interesting. FROM KORBA IN CHATTISGARH, INDIA TO DUBAI, YOU HAVE HAD AN EVENTFUL JOURNEY? I grew up in a humble Malayalee family in Korba, a small town in Chattisgarh. I started out as a dancer. I used to dance in Ganpati
visarjan. I loved music from a young age and started mixing music from audio cassettes. It was laborious. We used to hear music on the Walkman, pause it, then cut it and reattach it with tape. Then I downloaded a software on my laptop called Virtual DJ and started practicing on it. HOW DID YOU LEARN THE ART OF DJING PROFESSIONALLY? When I moved to Bhilai to graduate, I went for an audition at a night club and when I started playing from my laptop, the owners started laughing at me. They realised that I had the talent but had no means to the equipment. They agreed to teach me but I would have to play with them for free. They gave me food and Rs 20 daily for
petrol but no money. The owner Ravikant Sharma finally taught me what I needed to know in 2007. I then started playing professionally and won all DJing competitions in Chattisgarh. It wasn’t enough. My parents weren’t keen that I pursue music. They thought it was a big bad world and I would get corrupted with drugs, women and alcohol. They are simple people. HOW DID DUBAI HAPPEN? My mother wanted me to move to Dubai to work and I arrived here with my first job as a data entry operator where I was paid AED 1200. In my second job, I got to teach DJing in a music school in Festival City. I would work in the
day and play music in the night. Eventually I met my tribe of people. I met Dixit Dev who owns Playfield Entertainment last year and since then I’ve been working with him on my project and they represent me. HOW DO YOU SEE THE MUSIC SCENE IN DUBAI? Dubai needs original tracks rather than remixes. While remixes are great for big gatherings, in clubs, original tracks, work better because people want to sing and dance to the songs and not guess what tune comes next. DON’T YOU WANT TO OPEN YOUR OWN CLUB? I am planning a club in Bhilai with my friend Arun. I want to promote talent from my home truf.

ﻧﻔﺴــﻲ اﳉﺪﻳﺪة ،اﻟﻨﺎس ﻻ ﺗﻌﺮف ﻣﺎ ﻣﺮ ﺑﻪ اﳌﺮﻳﺾ ،ﻳﻌﺮﻓﻮن اﻟﺘﻔﺎﺻﻴﻞ اﻟﺸــﻜﻠﻴﺔ وﻟﻴﺲ اﻟﻨﻔﺴــﻴﺔ وﻣــﺎ ﻣﺮرﻧــﺎ ﺑــﻪ ﻣــﻦ ﺧــﻮف وأﻟﻢ. أﺳــﻠﻂ اﻟﻀــﻮء ﻋﻠــﻰ ﻫــﺬه اﻟﺘﻔﺎﺻﻴــﻞ اﻟﺘﻲ ﻻ ﻳُﻔﻜــﺮ ﺑﻬــﺎ اﳉﻤﻴــﻊ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﻨﺼﺘــﻲ ،ﺑﻌﺾ اﻟﻨﺎس ﺗﻌﺘﺮض وﲢﺰن ﳌﺸﺎرﻛﺘﻲ ﻣﻌﻬﻢ ﻫﺬه اﳌﻌﻠﻮﻣــﺎت ،وﻟﻜﻦ أرﻳﺪ أن ﻳﻌﺮﻓﻮا اﻟﻨﺎس ﻣﺎ ﻣــﺮرت ﺑﻪ .ﺑﻌــﺪ أن أًﺻﺒﺖ ﺑﻪ ﻟﻠﻤﺮة اﻟﺜﺎﻟﺜﺔ، ﻟــﻢ أﻋﺪ أﺧﺎف ﺷــﻴ ًﺌﺎ ،ﺣﺘﻰ ﻟــﻢ أﻋﺪ أﺧﺎف أن ﻳﺄﺗﻴﻨــﻲ ﻣﺮة أﺧﺮى .اﻟﻔﺘﺮة ﻫﺬه ﻏﻴﺮﺗﻨﻲ ﻛﺜﻴ ًﺮا واﺳــﺘﻬﻠﻜﺖ ﻣﻨﻲ ﻋﺸﺮة ﺳﻨﻮات ﻷﻛﻮن ﻳﺎﺳﻤﲔ اﻟﺘﻲ ﺗﺮﻳﻬﺎ اﻟﻴﻮم. ـﻌﺮت ﺑﺄﻧـ ِـﻚ ﻫــﻞ ﺗﻌﺮﺿـ ِـﺖ ﻟﻠﺘﻨﻤــﺮ أو ﺷـ ِ ﻣﻀﻄــﺮة ﻟﺘﻘــﺪﱘ ﺗﻔﺴــﻴﺮ رﻏــﻢ أﻧـ ِـﻚ ﻟﺴـ ِـﺖ ُﻣﻠﺰﻣﺔ؟ ﻧﻌﻢ ﺗﻌﺮﺿﺖ ﻟﻠﺘﻨﻤﺮ ﻛﺜﻴ ًﺮا ،ﰲ ﻓﺘﺮة اﳌﺮاﻫﻘﺔ ﻛﻨــﺖ أﻋﺎﻧــﻲ ﻣــﻦ اﻟــﻮزن اﻟﺰاﺋــﺪ ﳑــﺎ ﺟﻌﻞ اﻟﻨــﺎس ﻳﺘﻨﻤﺮون ،وأﻳﺎم اﻟﺴــﺮﻃﺎن ﺗﻌﺮﺿﺖ ﻟﻠﺘﻨﻤﺮ.
ﻧﻌــﻢ ،ﺑــﻜﻞ ﺗﺄﻛﻴــﺪ .ﻋﻨﺪﻣــﺎ ﻳﺮوﻧــﻲ أﻣﺸــﻲ وأﻧﺎ ﻣﺮﺗﺪﻳﺔ ﺑﺎروﻛﺔ اﻟﺸــﻌﺮ ،ﻛﺎﻧﻮا ﻳﺸــﻴﺮون وﻳﺴــﺘﻐﺮﺑﻮن .وﻟﻜــﻦ ﺳــﺮﻋﺎن ﻣــﺎ أذﻫــﺐ إﻟﻴﻬــﻢ ﻷزﻳــﻞ ﻋﻼﻣــﺎت اﻻﺳــﺘﻔﻬﺎم وأﻗــﻮل »أﻧــﺎ ﻣﺮﺗﺪﻳــﺔ ﺑﺎروﻛــﺔ اﻟﺸــﻌﺮ ﻷﻧــﻲ ﻣﺼﺎﺑﺔ ﺑﺎﻟﺴﺮﻃﺎن« .اﻟﺘﻨﻤﺮ ﻣﻮﺟﻮد ﺣﺘﻰ ﰲ ﺣﺎﻻت اﳌــﺮض .ﻻ أﺣــﺪ ﻳﻌﻠــﻢ اﳋﻔﺎﻳــﺎ أو اﻵﺛــﺎر اﳉﺎﻧﺒﻴــﺔ اﻟﺘــﻲ ﺗﺮﻛﻬــﺎ اﻟﻌــﻼج اﻟﻜﻴﻤــﺎوي. اﻟﻨــﺎس ﺳــﺮﻳﻌﺔ ﺑﺈﻃــﻼق اﻷﺣــﻜﺎم واﻟﺘﻨﻤﺮ. ﻋﻨﺪﻣــﺎ ﺑﺪأت ﺑﺎﻟﻌﻤﻞ ﻋﻠــﻰ ﻣﻨﺼﺘﻲ ،اﻟﻜﺜﻴﺮ ﻣــﻦ اﻟﻨﺎس اﺗﻬﻤﺘﻨﻲ ﺑﺄﻧﻲ اﺳــﺘﺨﺪم ﻣﺮﺿﻲ ﻣــﻦ أﺟــﻞ اﻟﺘﺮوﻳﺞ ﻟﻨﻔﺴــﻲ ،وﻟﻜﻨﻨــﻲ أﻛﻤﻠﺖ ﻃﺮﻳﻘﻲ ﻷوﻟﺌﻚ اﻟﺬﻳﻦ ﻳﺮوﻧﻲ ﻣﻠﻬﻤﺔ. ﻓﺮاﻏﻚ؟ أﺧﺒﺮﻳﻨﻲ ﻣﺎذا ﺗﻔﻌﻠﲔ ﰲ وﻗﺖ ِ ﻟﻴــﺲ ﻟﺪي وﻗﺖ ﻓــﺮاغ ﰲ اﳊﻘﻴﻘﺔ ،أﻧﺎم ﰲ اﻟﺘﺎﺳﻌﺔ ﻣﺴﺎ ًء وأﺳــﺘﻴﻘﻆ اﳋﺎﻣﺴﺔ ﻓﺠ ًﺮا. أذﻫــﺐ ﻣــﻊ ﻛﻠﺒــﻲ ﻟﻠﺘﻨــﺰه وﻣﻦ ﺛﻢ أﻋــﻮد إﻟﻰ اﻟﻌﻤﻞ.
ﻋﻨﺪﻣــﺎ ﻳﻜــﻮن اﳌﻮﺿــﻮع ﻫــﻮ اﳌﻮﺿــﺔ ،ﻣــﺎذا ﻧﺼﻴﺤﺘﻚ؟ ﺳﺘﻜﻮن ِ ِ راﺣﺘﻚ« ﺳﺘﻜﻮن »اﺧﺮﺟﻲ ﻣﻦ ﻣﻨﻘﻄﺔ وﻟﻜــﻦ أﻟﻴــﺲ اﻟﺴــﺮ اﻷول ﻹﻃﻼﻟﺔ أﻧﻴﻘﺔ ﻫﻮ أن ﺗﺸﻌﺮي ﺑﺎﻟﺮاﺣﺔ؟ ﻗــﺪ ﲢﺒــﲔ اﻷﻟــﻮان اﳊﻴﺎدﻳــﺔ ،ﻛﻤــﺎ ﻫــﻲ ﻏﺎﻟﺒﻴﺔ اﻟﻨﺎس ،ﻷﻧﻬﺎ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻘﻄﻊ اﻟﺘﻲ ﻳﺴــﻬﻞ ﺗﻨﺴــﻴﻘﻬﺎ .وﻟﻜﻦ ﲡﺮﺑﺔ اﻷﻟﻮان ﺳﺘﺆﺛﺮ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻧﻔﺴــﻴﺘﻚ ﺑﺸــﻜﻞ إﻳﺠﺎﺑــﻲ ،وﻣــﻊ ﲡﺮﺑﺘــﻚ ﻟﻸﻟﻮان ﺳﺘﺸــﻌﺮﻳﻦ ﺑﺎﻟﺮاﺣﺔ واﻟﺜﻘﺔ ﺑﺎﻟﻨﻔﺲ ﻣــﻊ اﻟﺘﻐﻴﻴــﺮ ﻫــﺬا .ﲡــﺮأي ﻋﻠــﻰ اﻟﺘﺠﺮﺑــﺔ وﻣﻌﺮﻓﺔ أﻣﻮر ﺟﺪﻳﺪة ،اﻛﺘﺸــﺎف ﻣﺎ ﻳﻠﻴﻖ ِ ﺑﻚ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻨﻈﺮة اﻷوﻟﻰ. أﻧﺖ ﻣﻦ ﻣﺤﺒﺎت اﻷﻓﻼم؟ ﻫﻞ ِ أﻧــﺎ ﻣﻦ ﻋﺎﺷــﻘﺔ اﻷﻓﻼم اﳌﺼﺮﻳــﺔ اﻟﻘﺪﳝﺔ، ﺗﻠــﻚ اﻟﺘــﻲ ﺗﻜــﻮن ﺑﺎﻷﺑﻴﺾ واﻷﺳــﻮد .أﺣﺐ رﺷــﺪي أﺑﺎﻇﺎ ،ﺷــﺎدﻳﺔ ،ﻓﺎﺗــﻦ ﺣﻤﺎﻣﺔ ،ﻋﻤﺮ ﺷــﺮﻳﻒ وﺳــﻌﺎد ﺣﺴــﻨﻲ .ﻓــﻦ ﺛﺎﻧــﻲ وﻋﺎﻟــﻢ ﺛﺎﻧﻲ ،ﻟﻦ أﻣﻞ أﺑ ًﺪا ﻣﻦ ﻣﺸﺎﻫﺪة ﻫﺬه اﻷﻓﻼم اﻟﺘﻲ ﺗﺘﻤﺘﻊ ﺑﺎﻟﺮﻗﻲ واﻻﻟﺘﺰام واﳊﺐ. ﻳﻮﻧﻴﻮ 2021ﻓﻴﻠﻢ ﻓﻴﺮ ﺍﻟﺸﺮﻕ ﺍﻷﻭﺳﻂ 58

ة ،أ ،أ ان أدون اﳌﻘﺎﺑﻠــﺔ اﻟﺘــﻲ أﺟﺮﻳﺘﻬﺎ ﻣﻊ إﺣﺪى اﻟﺸــﺨﺼﻴﺎت اﳌﺆﺛﺮة اﻟﺘــﻲ ﻗﺎﺑﻠﺘﻬــﺎ ﻣﺆﺧــ ًﺮا ،وأﺣﺘــﺎر ﺑﺎﻟﻔﻌﻞ ﺑﺎﻟﻌﻨــﻮان ،ﻓﻬﻲ ﻗﻮﻳﺔ وﻧﺎﻋﻤﺔ ﰲ ﻧﻔﺲ اﻟﻮﻗﺖ ،ﻻ ﺗﺴــﻜﺖ ﻋﻦ ﺣﻘﻬﺎ وﻟﻄﻴﻔﺔ ،ذات ﻧﻈــﺮة ﺣﺎدة واﺑﺘﺴــﺎﻣﺔ داﻓﺌــﺔ ،إﻻ ﺑﻌﺪ ﻫﺬه اﳌﻘﺎﺑﻠﺔ ﺷــﻌﺮت ﺑﺎﻟﻘــﻮة ﺗﻐﻤﺮﻧــﻲ واﻷﻣﻞ ﻳﻐﻤﺮﻧــﻲ أﻣﺎ اﻷﻟﻮان ،ﻓﻜﺎﻧﺖ أﺷــﺒﻪ ﺑﻠﻮﺣــﺔ ﻓﻨﻴــﺔ ﺟﻤﻴﻠــﺔ ﲡﻠــﺲ أﻣﺎﻣــﻲ ﺑﺄﻟﻮان ﻣﻨﺴــﻘﺔ ﺑﺄﺟﻤﻞ ﻃﺮﻳﻘــﺔ ﳑﻜﻨــﺔ .أﲢــﺪث ﻋﻦ ﻳﺎﺳــﻤﲔ ﻳﺴــﺮي ،اﳌــﺮأة اﻟﺘﻲ ﲡــﺮأت ﻋﻠﻰ ﻛﺴــﺮ ﺣﺎﺟﺰ اﳋــﻮف ،ﲡﺮﺑﺔ ﻛﻞ ﻣﺎ ﻫﻮ ﺟﺪﻳﺪ وﻣﻼﺣﻘــﺔ أﺣﻼﻣﻬﺎ .ﻣﻘﺎﺑﻠﺔ ﻏﻤﺮﺗﻬــﺎ اﻟﻀﺤﻜﺎت ،اﻟﻠﺤﻈﺎت اﳉﺎدة واﻟﻜﺜﻴﺮ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺪروس واﳌﻮاﻋﻆ .ﺣﻨﺎن ﻳﺤﻴﻰ ﺗﺘﺤﺪث ﻣــﻊ ﻳﺎﺳــﻤﲔ ﻳﺴــﺮي ﻋــﻦ اﻷﺣــﻼم واﳌﺼﺎﻋــﺐ وﻃﺒ ًﻌــﺎ ﻋﻦ اﻟﺴﻴﻨﻤﺎ اﳌﺼﺮﻳﺔ .ﻣﻘﺘﻄﻔﺎت...
وﻇﻴﻔﺘﻚ ﻟﺘﺪﺧﻠﻲ ﻋﺎﻟﻢ ﺗﺮﻛﺖ ِ ذﻛﺮت ﻟﻲ أﻧﻚ ِ ِ ﻣﻮاﻗــﻊ اﻟﺘﻮاﺻــﻞ اﻻﺟﺘﻤﺎﻋــﻲ واﻟﺘﺪوﻳــﻦ ،ﻣﺎ وﻇﻴﻔﺘﻚ ﺳﺎﺑﻘً ﺎ؟ ﻛﺎﻧﺖ ِ أﻧﺎ ﺧﺮﻳﺠﺔ ﻛﻠﻴﺔ اﻗﺘﺼﺎد وﻋﻠﻮم ﺳﺎﺳﻴﺔ ﰲ ﺟﺎﻣﻌﺔ اﻟﻘﺎﻫﺮة وﻗﺴﻢ إﺣﺼﺎء وﻳُﻌﺘﺒﺮ واﺣﺪ ﻣﻦ أﺻﻌﺐ اﻷﻗﺴﺎم .أي ﺷﺨﺺ ﻳﺨﺘﺎر ﻫﺬه اﻟﻜﻠﻴﺔ، ﻳﻜﻮن ﻟﺪﻳﻪ ﻫﺪف اﻟﻌﻤﻞ ﰲ ﺳﻠﻚ دﺑﻠﻮﻣﺎﺳﻲ إﻻ أن ﻫﺪﰲ اﻷﺳﺎﺳﻲ ﻛﺎن اﻟﻌﻤﻞ ﰲ ﻣﺠﺎل اﻟﺒﻨﻮك .ﺗﺨﺮﺟﺖ وﻋﻤﻠﺖ ﰲ ﻋﺪة ﺷﺮﻛﺎت ﺣﺘﻰ ﻋﺎم 2014ﺣﻴﺚ ﻗﺮرت أن أﺳﺘﻘﻴﻞ ﻣﻦ ﻋﻤﻠﻲ واﻟﺒﺪء ﺑﺎﻟﻌﻤﻞ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﺸﺮوع أﺣﺒﻪ. دﻓﻌﻚ ﻻﺗﺨﺎذ ﻫﺬا اﻟﻘﺮار؟ ﻣﺎ اﻟﺬي ِ ﻣــﺎ دﻓﻌﻨــﻲ ﻻﺗﺨــﺎذ ﻫــﺬا اﻟﻘﺮار ﻫــﻮ ﻣﺮوري ﺑﺘﺠﺮﺑــﺔ اﻟﺴــﺮﻃﺎن ﺛﻼﺛــﺔ ﻣــﺮات ،وﻫــﺬا ﺳــﺎﻋﺪﻧﻲ أن أﻋــﺮف ﻣــﺎذا أرﻳﺪ ،ﻣــﺎذا أﺣﺐ اﻟﻘﻴــﺎم ﺑــﻪ .ﰲ ﻋﻤﻠــﻲ اﻟﻘــﺪﱘ ﻛﺎن اﻟﻀﻐــﻂ ﻫﺎﺋــﻞ وﻟﻜــﻦ ﰲ اﻟﻨﻬﺎﻳــﺔ ،ﻛﻞ اﻟﻌﻤــﻞ ﻻ ﻳﻜﻮن ﻣﻦ أﺟﻠﻚ .ﻫﺬه اﻟﺘﺠﺎرب دﻓﻌﺘﻨﻲ ﻟﻼﺳﺘﻤﺘﺎع ﺑﻮﻗﺘﻲ ،أﻧﺎ أﺣﺐ ﻧﻔﺴﻲ واﻟﻘﻴﺎم ﲟﺎ أرﻳﺪه. ﻟﻚ؟ ﻣﺎ ﻫﻮ اﻹﳒﺎز ﺑﺎﻟﻨﺴﺒﺔ ِ ﻛﻞ ﻋﻤــﻞ أﻗﻮم ﺑــﻪ وﻳُﺴــﻌﺪﻧﻲ أﻋﺘﺒﺮه إﳒﺎز. اﻟﻘﻴــﺎم ﲟــﺎ أﺣﺒــﻪ واﻟﺘﻨــﻮع ﲟــﺎ أﻗــﻮم ﺑﻪ ﻫﻮ إﳒــﺎز ﺑﺤــﺪ ذاﺗــﻪ .اﻹﺑــﺪاع ﻫــﻮ ﻣﺠﺎﻟــﻲ، اﳌﻮﺿﺔ ،اﻟﻌﻼﻗﺎت اﻟﻌﺎﻣﺔ واﻟﺘﺴــﻮﻳﻖ ،أﺷــﻌﺮ ﺑﺎﻟﺴﻌﺎدة ﲟﺎ ﻟﺪي.
ﻛﻴــﻒ ﻛﺎﻧــﺖ ردة ﻓﻌــﻞ ﻋﺎﺋﻠﺘـ ِـﻚ اﲡــﺎه ﻗــﺮار ـﺘﻘﺎﻟﺘﻚ ﻣــﻦ ﻋﻤﻠـ ِـﻚ ﻣــﻦ أﺟــﻞ اﻟﻘﻴــﺎم اﺳـ ِ ﺧﺼﻮﺻــﺎ أن اﳉﻤﻴــﻊ ﳝﻴــﻞ ﲟــﺎ ﲢﺒﻴﻨــﻪ؟ ً ﻟﻠﻮﻇﻴﻔــﺔ اﻟﺜﺎﺑﺘــﺔ اﻟﺘــﻲ ﺗﻮﻓــﺮ ﻟﻠﻔــﺮد راﺗــﺐ ﺷﻬﺮي وﺗﺄﻣﲔ ﺻﺤﻲ؟ أذﻛﺮ وﻗﺘﻬﺎ أﻧﻬﻢ ﻃﻠﺒﻮا ﻣﻨﻲ اﻟﺘﻔﻜﻴﺮ وﻣﻦ ﺛﻢ اﻟﻘﻴﺎم ﲟﺎ أرﻏﺐ ﺑﻪ ،ﻟﻢ أﻣﺮ وﺣﺪي ﺑﻈﺮوﰲ، ﺑــﻞ ﻫــﻢ ً أﻳﻀﺎ ﻣﺮوا ﲟــﺎ ﻣﺮرت ﺑــﻪ .ﻳﺪرﻛﻮن أن أي ﺿﻐــﻂ ﻧﻔﺴــﻲ أو ﺣــﺰن ﺳــﻴﺠﻌﻠﻨﺎ ﻧﺮﺟــﻊ ﻟﻨﻘﻄــﺔ اﻟﺼﻔــﺮ .ﻃﻠﺒــﻮا ﻣﻨــﻲ اﻟﻘﻴــﺎم ﲟــﺎ ﻳﺸــﻌﺮﻧﻲ ﺑﺮاﺣــﺔ أﻛﺒــﺮ واﻟﺘﻔﻜﻴــﺮ ﻣﺎ ﻫﻮ اﻻﺳــﺘﺜﻤﺎر اﻷﻓﻀﻞ ﻟﻲ .وﺑﺎﳌﻨﺎﺳﺒﺔ ،ﻣﻮﺿﻮع اﻟﺘﺪوﻳــﻦ ﻟــﻢ ﻳﻜــﻦ ﲢﺼﻴﻞ ﺣﺎﺻــﻞ ،ﺑﻞ ﻛﻨﺖ ﺑﺎﻟﻔﻌﻞ أﻗﻮم ﺑﺎﻟﺘﺼﻮﻳﺮ ﺧﻼل ﺳــﺎﻋﺎت اﻟﻌﻤﻞ وﺑــﺪأت ﺑﻌــﺪ ذﻟــﻚ اﻟﺘﻔﻜﻴﺮ ﺑﺎﳌﻮﺿﻮع ﺑﺸــﻜﻞ ﺟﺪي .واﻟﺪي دﻋﻤﺎﻧﻲ ﺑﻬﺬه اﻟﻔﻜﺮة. ﻣــﺎ ﻗﻤـ ِـﺖ ﺑــﻪ ُﻳﻘــﺎل ﻋﻨﻪ »اﳋــﺮوج ﻣﻦ ﻣﻨﻄﻘﺔ أو اﻟﺮاﺣــﺔ« ﺷﻌﺮت ﺑﺎﻟﻨﺪم؟ ،ﻫﻞ ِ أﻧﺎ أﻋﺸﻖ ﻏﻤﻮض اﻟﻘﺪر ،داﺋ ًﻤﺎ ﻳﺜﻴﺮ اﻟﺘﺤﺪي وﻟﻜــﻦ ﺑﻄﺮﻳﻘﺔ ﻓﺮﻳﺪة وﺟﻤﻴﻠﺔ ،ﺟﻬﻠﻨﺎ ﺑﺎﻟﻘﺪر ﻫﻲ ﻧﻌﻤﺔ ﻣﻦ اﷲ .وﻟﻮ ﻓﻜﺮﻧﺎ ﺑﺎﳌﺴــﺘﻘﺒﻞ وﻣﺎ ﺳــﻴﺤﺼﻞ ﻟﻦ ﻳﺤﺪث إﻻ ﻣﺎ ﻛﺘﺐ اﷲ .اﻟﻘﺪر ﻟــﻚ أﻣــﻮ ًرا ُﲢ ِ ﺳــﻴُﺨﺒﺊ ِ ﺰﻧﻚ وﻟﻜﻦ ﺳــﻴﺘﺒﻌﻬﺎ ِ ﺳﺘﺴﻌﺪك .إن رﺟﻊ ﺑﻲ اﻟﻌﻮض وأﻣﻮر أﺧﺮى اﻟﻮﻗﺖ ،ﺳــﺄﺗﺨﺬ ﻧﻔــﺲ اﻟﻘﺮار .ﻧﻌــﻢ ﻣﺎ ﻗﻠﺘﻪ

ما هي المشاريع التي تتطلع لها؟ أنا أتطلع إلى عدة مشاريع عالمية ،هذا بالتأكيد باإلضافة إلى مشاريع هنا ً لك ،سأتطلع أكثر إلى أفالم األكشن إال أنه يوجد فيلم أيضا .كما قلت ِ ً كوميدي Unfair and Lovelyفي الطريق لكسر الروتين قليل .وبعدها غامرت في عالم المنصات الرقمية بمسلسل Inspector Avinashمن إخراج جيو .لذلك أنا أغامر بالفعل في هذه المساحات وآمل أن يأتي ً شيء ما ويغفلني في أحد هذه األيام ،لم يخطر أبدا ببالي هذا الموضوع ً وأجده مثير لالهتمام .أيضا يوجد الكثير من المشاريع األخرى ولكننا نحاول اختيار المشاريع األفضل لنقدمها للعالم. مع األفالم ،شغفك لمسابقات الفروسية نفسه؟ ً على مر السنوات ،تركت أفالم ألني كنت مشاركا بسابقات الفروسية، أو عرض قفز ولكني لم أعد أفعل هذا .توقفت عن لعب البولو واآلن فقط عروض القفز .قد مرت عدة سنوات منذ أن شاركت في مسابقة فعلية ،ولكنني أتطلع للقيام بها من جديد .لطالما أدركت أن األفالم تعتمد على األذواق واآلراء ،ويمكنك أن تتالعب بالرأي سواء بشكل جيد أو سيء ،ولكن في الرياضة ،األمر واضح للجميع ،وهو حس واضح ً من النجاح ،لذلك أنا أحبها جدا .دخلت عالم الرياضة منذ أن كنت في المدرسة وكنت أغيظ زمالئي لعدم قدرتهم ممارسة الرياضات التي كنت أمارسها وقتها ،ولكن الزلت قادر على ممارسة الرياضة التي اخترتها بكل حكمة (يضحك).
اهتمامي في الحياة البرية بدأ من هنا وأقوم بها كل ما سنحت لي الفرصة قضاء وقت في البراري وهذا ما ُيطلق عليه اسم الحفاظ على حس التصوير ،حيث تجمع صو ًرا متنوعة وتفهم النظام البيئي والحيواناتً ، آمل أن تذهب الناس وتعيش التجربة ولكن ً أيضا تأدية واجبهم للحفاظ عليها. بطريقة أو أخرى ،استطاعت الناس أن ترى جوهري .ال أعلم ،بالرغم من بعض التغييرات الجسدية التي ال تحبذها ولكن يجب عليك القيام بها من أجل دورك، إال أنهم الزالوا يحبونك ،امتناني لهم وصل عنان السماء .ال أعلم ماذا ُيسمى هذا، وما أعرفه هو أنه في اللحظة التي أدرك ما هو سأخسره .ما أنا ُمتأكد منه ،هو أني ال أسمح لشخصيتي الحقيقية بأن تسيطر على الشخصية التي أمثلها ،وعلى األغلب هذا ما ينجح. بكل تأكيد تجذب انتباه الكثير من السيدات ،ما الذي يجذبك أنت؟ ال أعلم ،الموضوع يختلف من شخص آلخر ،حيث كل شخص فينا يرى ما هو جذاب بالنسبة له وقد ال يكون كذلك بالنسبة لغيره .بالنسبة لي ،أنا أنجذب للعيون الجميلة واالبتسامة.
ً تتحدث أيضا عن مشاكل متنوع تعاني منها البيئة وكنت سفير األمم المتحدة للكثير من أنواع الطيور؟ ً ً لطالما كنت متصل باألرض والطبيعة ،حتى عندما كنت طفل ،كنت أحب أن أكون ً محاطا بالحيوانات .وعلى مر السنين ،عندما تكون ً مهتما بشيء ،تتعلم أكثر عنه وهذا ما فعلته .يدرك المرء الحماقة التي تصنعها البشرية وترى أنه ما لم يبدأ عدد كبير من الناس في إجراء تغييرات صغيرة ،فلن يغير ذلك مسار سلوكنا البشري المدمر .دخلت هذا المجال بسبب صديقي أفروز شاه مع حملة تنظيف الشاطئ الذي بدأ بها في مومباي والزالت الحملة تتوسع .التقاط األوساخ من على الشاطئ سيمنحك فكرة عما نتسبب فيه ،وعندما تتجمع هذه المعلومات في رأسك ،ستدرك أنه إن كان يجب عليك أن تقاتل من أجل شيء فسيكون ً من أجل قضية البيئة .هذه الجائحة الصحية أيضا نتجت عن تدخلنا ً بالبيئة وإن لم نفصل طرقنا هذه الفيروسات ستأتي مجددا .هذا واحد من األمور التي أتحدث عنها بكل وضوح .هذا قتال ذو هدف سامي وأشعر بالفخر كوني صاحب صوت في هذه القضية واستطاعتي على التأثير مكان ما وآمل أن أقوم بهذا بشكل أكبر. وإلهام بعض الناس في ٍ وحبك لتصوير الحياة البرية؟ اهتمامي في الحياة البرية بدأ من هنا وأقوم بها كل ما سنحت لي الفرصة قضاء وقت في البراري وهذا ما ُيطلق عليه اسم الحفاظ على حس التصوير ،حيث تجمع ً صورا متنوعة وتفهم النظام البيئي والحيوانات، ً ً آمل أن تذهب الناس وتعيش التجربة ولكن أيضا تأدية واجبهم للحفاظ عليها. هل لديك أي خطط في بدأ أفالم وثائقية عن هذه األمور؟ قمت بالكثير من هذا النوع ،كتبت عروض ،حفظت مقاالت ،ولكن تعرفين أنه لدي وظيفة في نوع آخر من صناعة األفالم ولذلك األمر صعب ً نوعا ما .ولكن بكل تأكيد سأخوض بها كما لدي بعض األفكار .نعم سأقدم عمل كهذا ،ولكن يجب أن يكون له تأثير كبير عندما أقوم به وليس فقط من أجل دخول عالم الشاشة الصغيرة.

كله .من قبل ،كنت أدفن نفسي والذين معي بالطريقة التي أعمل بها ،ولكن ال أقوم بهذا اآلن .أشعر بأنها مرحلة شخصية أكثر اآلن وأشعر براحة أكبر بها. ما هي أقرب األدوار لقلبك أو ما هي األدوار التي تعتبرها األهم في مسيرتك الفنية؟ األدوار األقرب لقلبك واألدوار األهم في مسيرتك الفنية هما أمرين مختلفين ً تماما .األدوار األقرب لقلبي هي D ،Monsoon Weddingوالذي هو كان فيلم بوليوود ً ً لبعض من الوقت، األول لي والذي جعلني محبوبا ومميزا ٍ أي إلى أن أوضحت لهم بأني لن أخضع لهم وأنه لي طريقتي الخاصة بإنجاز األمور (يضحك) .ووسط عدة أفالم مثيرة لالهتمام التي قدمتها ،من بينها فيلم Rang ً متأخرا ،وبعدها فيلم Once Upon ،Rasiyaوالذي ُعرض A Time in Mumbaaiالذي أعادني إلى ذاكرة الناس ً ويوجد أيضا فيلم . Saheb Biwi Gangsterوبعد ذلك، أفالم كثيرة ،دوري في فيلم Highwayمن األدوار التي ً أتذكرها باألكثر ،وأيضا من األدوار التي أتذكرها ،فيلم Sarbjitلعملية التحول الكبيرة التي خضتها .وبعدها فيلم Extractionومن ثم .Radhe حاولت ً دائما تقديم أفضل ما لدي سواء مع كل المخرجين .ولكن الفيلم األقرب لقلبي هو فيلم ،Laal Rangولكنه لم يحصل على نجاحا ً ما يستحقه عندما عرض الفيلم ،ولكنه حقق ً واسعا على المنصة الرقمية. كرست ثالث سنوات من أجل التحضير لفيلم Battle for Saragarhiوالذي لم يتم عرضه بعد ،هل يشعرك ذلك باألسف للعمل في الوسط الفني أم تأخذ الموضوع كخطوة إيجابية لصالح نفسك؟ طريقة تحضيري للعمل ليست األفضل في الوسط الفني، أعني أن عامر خان يقوم بما أقوم أنا به ،ولكن بشكل عام هذه ليست الطريقة األمثل .نحن ال نميل إلى هذا النوع من األفالم ،ولذلك كان الموضوع ً صعبا بالنسبة لي ألعاني فيه .قدمت أفضل ما لدي ،ولكنك تشعر بخيبة األمل، وللتوضيح ،خيبة األمل ليست بسبب العمل الجاد الذي تبذله أو بسبب الوقت الذي تمنحه ،ما يؤلم بالفعل هو أن كل هذا العمل لم يصل إلى الجمهور بشكل كافي .ولكن، لم يتم غصبي على هذا ،بل أنا من قمت بهذا االختيار. ذهبت إلى المعبد وتعهدت على أال أحلق لحيتي حتى يتحقق الفيلم .ولكن ،استغرقت ثالث سنوات من عمري حتى عرفت أن ثمار هذا العمل لن تتحقق .في نفس الوقتُ ،عرض علي فيلم Extractionولكنني لم أكن ُمرحب بالفكرة ألني كنت سأضطر لحلق لحيتي .ولكنني ذهبت إلى المعبد وكسرت عهدي وبدموع تنغمر على وجنتي حلقت لحيتي، ً وأخذ مني الموضوع ً وقتا طويل ألتجاوزه .نعم ،األمر ُيسبب خيبة أمل عندما ال ُ تتاح لك فرصة مشاركة هذه الشخصية مع الجمهور ،ولكنه اختيارك في النهاية، لذلك عليك أن تحترم قرارك وأن تمضي ً قدما .في ذلك الوقت ،لم أكن أعرف ً أن الموضوع جسدي فحسب ،بل هي حالة نفسية أيضا كنت أعيشها وأقاتلها. في هذه النقطة من حياتي ،عندما أتذكر تلك الفترة ،أدرك أنني كنت أمر بفترة اكتئاب ،ولكن على كل أحد فينا االستمرار والمضي في الحياة. ولكن برغم هذه االنتكاسات ،عدت من رمادك كطائر العنقاء في كل مرة وأثبت للعالم قدرتك الكبيرة في التمثيل؟ أشعر باإلطراء ،ولكن لم يكن األمر مقصود على اإلطالق .كل ما أريد القيام به هو
جزءا من ً أن أشارك وأكون ً أفالما قوية يقدرها الجمهور .تعرفين ماذا يقولون في مجالنا، ً وهو أمر ال أصدقه على اإلطالق “ما ُيمكنك رؤيته ُيمكنه بيعه” .لم أقدم أعمال لعدة سنوات في مرحلة ما ،ومع ذلك ،عدت وحصلت على بعض األفالم ويتم تقدير عملي، ولذلك أنا ممتن للغاية .ال أتذكر الموضوع إال بالكثير من االمتنان وليس العكس. ً إذا ،إلى أي مدى يهمك النجاح والمبيعات المحققة في شباك التذاكر؟ ما يمنحك فيلم رائع قمت به هو فرصة القيام بفيلم رائع آخر أو فيلم مع طاقم تمثيل ً رائع ،وإن نجح فهو أيضا يمنحك القدرة على تقديم عمل ناجح آخر .بالتأكيد يهمني المبيعات المحققة في شباك التذاكر ،ففي نهاية هذا نوع من أنواع التجارة ،فهو ليس فن فقط .بالنسبة لي ،فيلم Extractionو Radheسيضيفان عنصر السهولة للقيام بمشاريع أخرى. إطاللتك لها ُمعجبيها... أنا ممتن لكل هذا الحب ،حاولت أن أبدو ً بشعا لشخصياتي التي تطلبت هذا ،ولكن

عندما شاركت فيلم ،Extractionلم أكن أعلم بأن مشاهد األكشن ستكون بهذه الدقة ،ولكن جسدي استجاب بشكل إيجابي .اتحد عقلي وجسدي من أجل تقديم هذه املشاهد .لذلك، اآلن وبعد عشرون عامًا اكتشفت هذه املوهبة في أفالم األكشن، وأنا بالفعل استمتع بتقديم هذا النوع من األفالم وأتمنى أن أقدم املزيد ،عمل سابق بخطوة عما قدمته في فيلم Extraction وحتى Radhe
ً ً شخصا مختلفا الشخصية لك .ولكنه شعور فريد من نوعه أن تكون ً تماما وتعطي نفسك فرصة عيش حياة أخرى من خالل نص .نعم هو عمل مجهد ولكنه شغفي. ما رأيك بوصف بطل األكشن الذي يطلقونه الناس عليك؟ ً من الغريب جدا أن هناك صورة معينة في عقول الناس عني وهي أني أميل للعنف ،أدوار الشخص القوي ،رغم أنني لم ألكم أي أحد في أي فيلم حتى شاركت في فيلم Do Lafzon Ki Kahaaniحيث قمت بدور محترف مهارات قتالية ،وكنت أالكم عندما أكون في الحلبة فقط .عندما شاركت فيلم ،Extractionلم أكن أعلم بأن مشاهد األكشن ستكون بهذه الدقة ،ولكن جسدي استجاب بشكل إيجابي ،حيث اتحد عقلي وجسدي من أجل تقديم هذه المشاهد. لذلك ،اآلن وبعد عشرون ً عاما اكتشفت هذه الموهبة في أفالم األكشن ،وأنا بالفعل استمتع بتقديم هذا النوع من األفالم وأتمنى أن أقدم المزيد ،عمل سابق بخطوة عما قدمته في فيلم Extraction وحتى !Radheبكل تأكيد علي تقديم أعمال متنوعة أخرى ،ولكن ً خصوصا ،ما قدمناه في نعم ،تقديم أعمال أكشن هو عمل ممتع ،Extractionوالذي هو فيلم أكشن بدرجة عالية حتى حسب معايير هوليوودية .حتى سلسلة األكشن في فيلم ،Radheكان من الممتع ً صريحا ،شعرت بأنها نهاية القفز من على متن مروحية والنجاة ،ألكون الدنيا (يضحك). بينك وبين سلمان خان صداقة قوية أمام الكاميرا ،ماذا عن خلف الكاميرا؟ ً تجمعنا رابطة قوية أيضا ،مررنا بلحظات جميلة وصعبة خالل صداقتنا ولكن تجمعنا عالقة أخوة قويةً . دائما ما يعطيني نصائح جيدة ،ولكن لم أتبعها ً دائما (يضحك) لذلك تجمعنا صداقة مبنية على أساس االحترام وعملنا مع بعض ،فيلم Kickو .Sultanمع فيلم ،Radheأصبحت عالقتنا أقوى .كما أنه فيلم سلمان خان ،وكان هذا كرم منه أن يرغب بأن أقدم أنا هذا الدور. هل يوجد هناك أمر آخر لم يتغير في آخر عشرين سنة ،بجانب عدم استماعك للنصائح؟ (يضحك) ال ،أنا أستمع إليها أكثر اآلن ،إال أنني في بعض األحيان ال أفعل. ما هي أفضل نصيحة حظيت بها؟ احفظ نصك واعرف أين األثاث لكيال تصطدم به. هل هذه النصيحة من نصرالدين شاه؟ ً ممازحا .لقد تعلمت الكثير من األمور الرائعة بسبب أخي نعم ،قالها نصرالدين شاه .سواء كان بسبب ورش التمثيل التي نظمها ،أو فرقه المسرحية التي ساعدتي في العثور على نفسي ،من ناحية الفن ومن ناحية التعبير .لذا ،اآلن أستمع أقل لنصائح عن التمثيل وأستمع أكثر للنصائح عن الحياة. ما هي النصيحة عن الحياة التي تعلمتها وتطبقها كقاعدة على الصعيد المهني؟ ال توجد لدي أي قاعدة في الحقيقة ،أنا سهل المعشر ،استمع للمخرج ،آتي في الوقت وأنا ً دائما مهتم بما أقوم به ،وأعتقد أن هذا ما ُيمكنك أن تقدمه من أجل زمالئك في العمل – المخرجين ً والمنتجين – الذي يقطعون ً شوطا طويل في صناعة الفيلم .فوق هذا كله ،عند تقديمك أداء قوي ،فما هذا إال إضافة جميلة للعمل يونيو 2021فيلم فير الشرق األوسط 68

ُ ُ سيصبح أصعب بالنسبة لك أن تقدم عمل جديد .ولذلك ،اآلن أعمل على اختيار أشخاص أفضل للعمل معهم ،ليس فقط من أجل قصة أفضل ألرويها أو مشهد أقوى ألقدمه ،اآلن من المهم رؤية ما إن كانوا سيقدمون المنصة المناسبة للفيلم ليصل إلى الناس. يبدو أنك ُمنطلق مع فيلمين Extractionواآلن Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai ً نعم ،فيلم Radheفيلم تجاري وأيضا يوجد فيلم Extractionالذي شاهده الكثير من الناس ،لذلك مع تقديم هذين الفيلم بشكل متتالي ،يبدو أنني وصلت إلى العالم كله (يضحك). ُ ناس أكثر ُيشاهدون أعمالك يعني مدخول مالي أكبر وبالتالي هو أمر مطمئن. ً كما قلت سابقا ،أنت تضيف إليه عنصر الفن ،ولكن في نهاية المطاف ،هو نوع من أنواع التجارة .ولذلك ،ألكون ً جزءا من أكبر التجارات على الصعيد ً الجمهور والدخل ،أنا متشوق جدا ،وبينما في وسط الجائحة الكل كان تحت حظر التجول ،تم عرض فيلمين من أفالمي ،ومنح الناس فترة راحة ،بشكل عام، شعورا ً ً رائعا للجميع. منح عندما تتحدث عن التجارة بالفن ،هل اضطررت للتنازل من أجل المحافظة على التوازن؟ لقد كنت في الجانبين ،لقد حققت نجاحات على الصعيد النقدي والتجاري. لن أقول مساومة أو تنازل ،ولكن سأقول التأقلم .القدرة على التأقلم هي في الحقيقة الحجر األساسي في مسيرتي المهنية ،ألنني لطالما أقلمت نفسي ً على األدوار الجديدة وأنواع األفالم التي أقدمها بدل من فرض نفسي على األدوار ،وهذا كان ً سببا لجعل أعمالي متنوعة وهذا ما ُيطلق عليه مصطلح االعتمادية التجارية (أي مزيج من األعمال المستقلة التجارية) وهذا كل ما مكنك أن ترينها كتنازل ،ولكن أراها كتأقلم ،وسأقدم أفضل ما لدي. قدمتهُ .ي ِ تعلمين ،األمر الذي أدركته بالخبرة ،هو أنه ال أحد يدين لك بأي شيء ،العالم ال يدين لك بأي شيء ،ولذلك عبارة «كان يجب أن يحدث هذا لي» أو «كان يجب أن ُيمنح هذا لي» .كل ما عليك فعله هو تقديم أفضل ما عندك واألمل على أن تحصل على ما تريد ،لذلك كنت ُمتأقلم كممثل وفي اختياري
كل ما أريد القيام به هو أن أشارك وأكون جز ًءا من أفال ًما قوية يقدرها الجمهور .تعرفين ماذا يقولون في مجالنا ،وهو أمر ال أصدقه على اإلطالق «ما يُمكنك رؤيته يُمكنه بيعه» .لم أقدم أعما ًل لعدة سنوات في مرحلة ما ،ومع ذلك ،عدت وحصلت على بعض األفالم ويتم تقدير عملي ،ولذلم أنا ممتن للغاية .ال أتذكر املوضوع إال بالكثير من االمتنان وليس العكس. ألدواري ،لن أقول عن ذلك تنازل. إذا ،هل اختياراتك ألدوارك توفر لك التوازن بين أن تكون وجه معروف من ناحية األفالم الناجحة على الصعيد التجاري وكممثل أو فنان ُيالحق الفن؟ في الحقيقة ،نعم ،أشعر أنني حققت هذا التوازن .في الهند يوجد مفهوم ينص ً ً شخصا واحدا ،على أمل على أنه يوجد نجم ويوجد ممثل ،أتمنى أن أجعلهما اليوم قبل غد. بالحديث عن التأقلم ،أنت بكل تأكيد ملك أفالم السيرة الذاتية مع كل هذه التغييرات في الشكل المذهلة... نعم ،قدمت بالفعل بعض أفالم السيرة الذاتية ،ولكن ال أختار الفيلم من أجل أن أظهر قدرتي على التحول .كل هذه التغييرات في الشكل هي صعبة للغاية وأنا أكرهها (يضحك) هي متعبة على الصعيد الجسدي ،العقلي والنفسي ،لذلك ال، ال أختار فيلم من أجل هذا .أختار فيلم وبينما أعيش تجربته ،أتخيل كيف كانت حياة الشخص الذي أقوم بدوره ،كيف فكر وكيف شعر ،ومع الوقت تجعل هذه

ُ ستكمل العقدين في بوليوود هذه السنة ،كيف تتذكر رحلتك إلى اآلن؟ الكثير من لحظات النجاح ،لحظات الفشل ،الشك بالنفس ،التأقلم على التغييرات ،البحث عن الغاية والكثير من االمتنان ...حس فيني يختار األفالم السابق لعصرها، واآلن نراها ذات شعبية كبيرة .عندما ذهبت إلى تجربة األداء لفيلم ،Monsoon Weddingلم يكن عندي أي فكرة أن بعد عشرين ً عاما ستكون لي فرصة تقديم مقابلة كهذه وهو لشعور رائع ،االلتزام واالستمرار بالرحلة. خالل العشرون ً عاما ،لم أقدم الكثير من األعمال ُمقارنة مع نجوم آخرين ،مع أخذ ثالث سنوات كفترة استراحة ً في منتصف الرحلة ،إال أنني حقا ممتن لكل ُصناع األفالم الذين يرون فيني إمكانيات لم يكتشفها أحد بعد ويقدمون لي كل ما هو جديد .حاولت اتباع الفن والذي هو في حقيقة األمر تجارة في بلدنا .ولكنني قدمت أفالم تجارية ،أفالم مستقلة ،أفالم تجريبية ولذلك نعم ،أنا ُ ً ً ممتن جدا لكل الفرص التي أتيحت لي ،الزلت شغوفا وال زلت ً مهتما ً كثيرا بعملي ،الزلت أبحث عن أجوبة ،الزلت أبحث عن طرق ألحسن بها من نفسي ،الزلت أعمل على نفسي ألصبح الممثل الذي أظن أنني باستطاعتي أن أكونه .لذا ،هي رحلة مستمرة ،وهي أشبه برحلة لطالب ً متهورا يتعلم عادات سيئة ويحاول التخلص منها .كنت ً ً وتواضعا ،وما يهم هدوءا في البداية ،ولكن أصبحت أكثر بالفعل هي كل األمور التي بقت ،الباقي نثره الريح .هناك الكثير من األفالم التي رغبت أن أقدمها ولكنني لم أستطع والكثير من األفالم األخرى التي استطعت تقديمها. بشكل عام ،هي تجربة مثمرة ،وأعتقد أنني اآلن في مرحلة متوازنة من حياتي ،وكما تعلمين أن الفرص التي قدمت لي جميعها لها جمهور كبير ،هم مستهلكين المنتج الذي ولكنك تحاولين إضافة الفن إليه (يضحك) .لذا تقدمينه ِ نعم ،هي رحلة مثيرة لالهتمام وأتمنى أن يكون باقي لي عقدين آخرين من الزمن إن لم يكن أكثر (يضحك). أنت معروف بأنه ليس لديك أي مخاوف عندما يتعلق الموضوع باختيار األدوار ،حتى وإن لم تكن األدوار المطلوبة وكما قلت من قبل ،سابقة لعصرها .هل طريقة اختيارك لألفالم تغيرت على مر السنين؟ أنت تختارين األفضل اختيار األفالم الذي تتحدثين عنهِ ، لك ،وأنا لست من النوع الذي من بين العروض المقدمة ِ ُيلقي بنفسه على أصحاب األعمال أو أذهب إلى الخارج من أجل أن أتحدث عن نفسي أو أقنع أحد بموهبتي. أحاول ً دائما وأقدم ً أمورا جديدة ،وإن كان هناك دور ُ جديد لم أقم به ،أو عمل يتضمن أناس أحب العمل معهم ،أوافق على المشروع .نعم ،أنا ال أخاف عندما يكون ً ابتداء الموضوع اختيار أدواري ،قدمت كل أنواع األفالم، ً ً من Highwayوصول إلى Bombay Talkiesوصول إلى Jismو .Mair Aur Charlesآمل أن أبقى ً قادرا على االختيار وأن أبقى على هذا القدر من عدم الخوف .ولكن ً ما تغير هو أنه سابقا ،كنت أهتم فقط بالدور الذي أقدمه، ولكن مع الوقت ،أدركت بأنك تكون ً جزءا ال يتجزأ من عملية كبيرة ،فعلى سبيل المثال ،إن كنت تقدم عملك وتفان ،ولم يكن صناع الفيلم يعملون على بإخالص ٍ ُ تقديم هذا العمل على منصة مناسبة ،فهذا يعني أن أناس أقل ستشاهد العمل ،وبالتالي مدخول مالي أقل وبالتالي،

يوجد شيء فريد من نوعه في رانديب هودا، حيث أن هذا الممثل الفريد من نوعه كان يرفض تماما فكرة ممثل بوليوود الساحر الوسيم ويميل ً ً دائما لتقديم مشاهد قوية وأدوار تلمس المشاهد. ولكن ،اختياراته على مدار السنة لم تساعده ً كثيرا في مبيعات شباك التذاكر ،وال حتى إطالالته التي يعشقها كل جمهوره .عزز مكانته بأدوار قوية في أفالم مثل Highway، Laal Rang، Sarbjitومع الكثير من األفالم األخرىُ ،يقدم ً حاليا شخصيات تتمحور حول األكشن واإلثارة في فيلمين متتالين ،وهما Extractionوواحد من أجدد أفالمه !Radheوبشكل مثير لالهتمام ،الممثل أيضا أكمل عقدين في الوسط الفني منذ أن قدم ً أول عمله له ( )Monsoon Wedding 2001من إخراج ميرا نيير .وبينما هو يعمل على نفسه، أيضا مر ببعض األعمال التي لم تنجح رانديب ً بالشكل المتوقع ،إال أنه كان يعود بشكل أقوى كل مرة ،كطائر العنقاء األسطوري الذي يولد من رماده ليعود إلى أفق نجاحه .في مقابلة حصرية مع أكانكشا نافال شيتي ،رجل اليوم رانديب هودا عاما في الوسط الفني، يتحدث عن إكماله عشرين ً وأيضا عن جمعه للنجم والممثل في تمثيله ً ً مؤخرأ .مقتطفات: النجاحات الكبيرة التي حققها
