FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT

56 days that will rock your cinema world! Well, here we are again… it’s Awards season! I was reminded of such by a communication that came my way from AMPAS (the Oscar® people) listing nine categories’ shortlists of potential nominees. Now, they’ve been doing that shortlist thing with Foreign Language films for quite some time – there’s a lot of films out there in the world, it would be rather too much for the Academy members to have to watch them all! – but, to my knowledge, they’ve not before done it with any other category. It may be it’s for the same reason of sheer volume as above, but I guess what it also does is allows a greater number of films a reason to mention their Academy Award status in their advertising. I can see it now, “Academy Award Nomination shortlisted…” written on the poster. Where will it all end I wonder, “Academy Award Nomination eligible…”? As luck would have [nothing to do with] it, one of the films on the Foreign Language short list – which at this point in time seems the overwhelming favourite – is Bong Joon Ho’s utterly brilliant Parasite, which takes its place alongside a programme of films that is simply the best line-up of new cinema I’ve seen in a long time. There’s not just the aforementioned South Korean masterpiece, there’s Sam Mendes’ extraordinary ‘one-take’ wonder 1917 (google ‘1917 behind the scenes featurette’ and prepare to simply have to see this film); Taika (‘Wilderpeople’) Waititi’s WWII, Nazi Germany-set, Jojo Rabbit; Armando Iannucci’s breathless Dickens, The Personal History of David Copperfield; Robert Egger’s uniquely bonkers, fog-bound The Lighthouse; Kidman, Robbie and Theron taking on the Fox News patriarchy in Bombshell; and to cap it all off, and possibly the best of the lot, Céline Sciamma’s exquisite Portrait of a Lady on Fire. As if all this wasn’t enough, the 56 days contained herein also includes the best part of an entire Federico Fellini retrospective, in this the centenary year of his birth. Happy New Year!!!

Jojo is a lonely young boy living in Germany in the final months of the war. With his father absent, Jojo is an enthusiastic albeit inept member of the Hitler Youth, with his imaginary friend none other than Adolf Hitler himself (Taika Waititi). But when he discovers his mother has been hiding a young Jewish girl in their house, he is forced to confront the veracity of his own beliefs. Tackling the ludicrousness of racism and nationalism, Taiki Waititi crafts a riotously funny and surprisingly touching comedy.

If they do not make it, hundreds of soldiers will walk straight into a deadly attack and Blake’s brother is among them. Played in one continuous shot, this poignant drama fully immerses you within the brutal reality and haunting fears of trench warfare in the First World War. Directed and co-written by Sam Mendes and starring a host of British stars, 1917 is a masterpiece in the making.
Adam Sandler gives a career-high performance as Howard Ratner, a charismatic New York City jeweller and degenerate gambler always on the lookout for the next big score. After coming into possession of some rare African stones, Howard makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime. But faced with marital problems, business issues and vicious debt collectors, he soon finds himself in serious danger. The Sadfie brothers (Good Time, Heaven Knows What) apply their signature gritty feel to the tale, delivering an edge-of-your-seat, electrifying crime comedy.

Suhaib Gasmelbari • France/Sudan/Germany/Chad/Qatar 2019 1h33m • Digital • Arabic, English and Russian with English subtitles 15 • Documentary featuring Suleiman Ibrahim, Ibrahim Shaddad.
From visionary filmmaker Robert Eggers (The Witch) comes a hallucinatory tale of two lighthouse keepers on a remote island in the 1890s. Isolated for weeks with only each other for company, the two men (superbly played by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson) begin to suspect the other, and gradually lose their minds. Featuring dreamy seascapes stunningly shot in 35mm black and white, matched with a claustrophobic soundtrack of crashing waves and shrieking gulls, Eggers delivers another brilliantly original and distinctive film.
The ‘Sudanese Film Club’ brings together four retired film directors, looking to revive the film history of Sudan. Passionate and thoroughly uplifting, this documentary brings attention to a country’s history interwoven with rare footage of older African films. The four protagonists, dedicated to their art and to bringing cinema-going back to Sudan, are symbols of resistance in a country facing political oppression. Director Suhaib Gasmelbari explores how film continues to be a liberating voice in the dark.

Calling all the lovers to Filmhouse for a Valentine’s Day special! This was the first time Greta Garbo had been seen in a film that was predominantly comic (though it was hardly the first time she’d laughed, as the ads insisted). But her character still had an icy aura, at least at the outset - Garbo plays a Russian comrade staying in Paris on government business, a situation providing writers Wilder, Brackett and Walter Reisch with rich material for impish political jokes. Then she meets the acceptable face of Capitalism in the form of Melvyn Douglas, and succumbs to his suave looks and honeyed voice...

Sat 11 to Tue 14 Jan (screening on select dates only)
Tamara Kotevska, Ljubomir Stefanov • Republic of Macedonia 2019 1h27m • Digital • Turkish with English subtitles • 12A - Contains infrequent strong language. • Documentary.
John Chester • USA 2018 • 1h31m • Digital • PG - Contains mild threat and images of dead and injured animals. • Documentary.
In the mountains of North Macedonia, Europe’s last female beehunter scratches a living for herself and her elderly mother by harvesting and selling honey, until a nomadic family arrive, disrupting both their lives and the delicate ecosystem required by the bees themselves. Beautiful, and quietly devastating.
THE IRISHMAN Mon 13 Jan at 2.00pm & 7.00pm Martin Scorsese • USA 2019 • 3h29m • Digital • 15 - Contains strong violence, language. • Cast: Robert De Niro, Anna Paquin, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci.
Scorsese’s majestic gangster epic arrived in November on the back of a string of 5-star reviews. We waited for the critical backlash, but it never came. Yes, it’s another gangster film, like Goodfellas or Casino (if a tad longer!), but one imbued with a deep sense of regret and morality the earlier films rarely traded in. (The titular) Frank Sheeran looks back at his life as a hitman for the mob, and his friendship with Teamsters’ Union boss, Jimmy Hoffa...
An irresistible and massively timely documentary about John and Molly Chester who staked everything to set up a self-sustaining, bio-diverse agricultural operation in barren, rural California - and filmed it all. Deeply personal and objective in equal measure, and utterly inspiring.

Quentin Tarantino • USA/UK 2019 • 2h51m • Digital • 18 - Contains strong bloody violence. • Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Timothy Olyphant, Margaret Qualley, Al Pacino.
Quentin Tarantino’s ninth feature film was the absolute must-see at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, if the bun-fight on the way into the screening was anything to go by. A paean, albeit a violent one, to the ‘Golden Age’ at its end, an aging actor and his best buddy/stuntman navigate their way through a changing Hollywood.

The Edinburgh Short Film Festival is delighted to be participating in the Shortcutz Amsterdam International Audience Award 2020. At each screening, audiences will vote for their favourite film, and the winner will be announced on Sunday 19th January. Don’t miss your chance to see this fantastic programme!
As a precursor to this year’s EIFF retrospective, The Big Score, EIFF and Filmhouse are proud to present Countdown to The Big Score - a special retrospective screening once a month, running from January through to June. Acknowledging outstanding work by composers such as Wendy Carlos, Philip Glass, Angelo Badalamenti, Trent Reznor and DJ Shadow, screenings will include Steven Lisberger’s Tron (1982), Marc Singer’s Dark Days (2000), David Lynch’s Lost Highway (1997) and a 4K restoration of Paul Schrader’s Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985).
TRON
LOST HIGHWAY
Fri 31 Jan at 8.45pm
Tue 4 Feb at 8.25pm
Steven Lisberger • USA 1982• 1h36m • Digital • PG - Contains mild fantasy violence and infrequent mild language. • Cast: Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, Cindy Morgan, Barnard Hughes.
David Lynch • France/USA 1997 • 2h14m • Digital • 18 - Contains strong sex, language, violence and bloody images. • Cast: Bill Pullman, Patricia Arquette, Balthazar Getty, Robert Loggia.
Scored by electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos, Steven Lisberger’s influential sci-fi classic Tron sees software engineer Kevin Flynn digitised and uploaded into a visually-stunning world of deadly computer games. Having already delivered extraordinary scores for Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange and The Shining, Carlos proved to be the perfect composer for the futuristic Tron; collaborating with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the UCLA Chorus to create a groundbreaking fusion of electronic and orchestral music.
Featuring a superb cast led by Bill Pullman and Patricia Arquette, cult-classic Lost Highway is a stylish and surreal psychological thriller described by director David Lynch as ‘psychogenic fugue’. The soundtrack, assembled by Trent Reznor, is exceptional, mixing original score from Reznor, Barry Adamson and Angelo Badalamenti with tracks by artists including Marilyn Manson, The Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Lou Reed and David Bowie. The album reached #7 on the Billboard chart and achieved gold status in the U.S.

Moving Cinema is a Europe wide project designed to encourage younger audiences to enjoy the very best in contemporary and classic European film. EIFF’s Young Programmers are proud to be part of this network of young curators in Vilnius, Barcelona, Izola and Berlin. Over the last five months, EIFF’s Young Programmers have met weekly to watch, discuss and eventually select two films to share with Filmhouse audiences in February. The project also reaffirms that European cinema will always have a place in our hearts, and on our screens, here at Filmhouse. Each film will be introduced by our Young Programmers, who will also be presenting new films at Edinburgh International Film Festival in June.

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN Sat 1 Feb at 5.55pm Lynne Ramsay • UK/USA 2011• 1h52m • 35mm • 15 - Contains strong language, once very strong, strong sex & sexualised nudity Cast: Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Ezra Miller.
Lynne Ramsey’s third feature is a superb film, featuring outstanding performances from Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller as the mother and son at the dark heart of a hauntingly alluring tale. With a non-linear narrative, and her inimitable visual style, Ramsay explores the lead up to and consequences of a child’s terrible crime, exploring themes of motherhood, nature and nurture, and leaves us questioning the very nature of evil itself. Unmissable. - Angelica Petherick
Showing from 35mm prints. Tickets are £3. For more information contact: education@cmi-scotland.co.uk More details of Moving Cinema can be found at: www.movingcinema.eu/the-project/

TICKET OFFER | SEE PAGE 15 The blend of what is real and what is constructed has become a common trend in the documentary genre over the last decade. The 7th edition of the IberoAmerican Documentary Film Festival in Scotland creates a safe space to open a dialogue between genres and disciplines. In this inclusive space we will look into isolation, colonialism and migration. In a time of new walls being erected (Trump, Calais, Brexit...), growing support for extreme parties and increased inequality, and anger, we will explore how gender roles in society are changing. Two new strands, and a focus on Portugal, frame the 2020 IberoDocs edition, that will take place from the 26th of February until the 15th of March in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Obrigados! Spanish filmmaker N. Ballús makes her first fiction film after The Plague, but does so without betraying her documentary approach. Staff Only tells the story of a 17-year-old girl, who spends the Christmas holidays in Senegal with her brother and father. Tired of planned trips and the ceremonious actions of the hotel employees, as well as her father’s behaviour, she opens the door to the staff area and finds a world that allows her to develop close and complex relationships. This Scottish Premiere screening will be followed by a Skype Q&A with Neus Ballús.
After the success of Jonas and the Backyard Circus, producer Paula Gomes comes back with a fiction feature that openly flirts with reality. João is a lonely 13 year-old boy living in the outback. With no friends, no mother, and no bond with his father, he is scorned as ‘Son of Ox’ and desperately wants to escape. When a small circus arrives in town, João is announced as the new clown. Will he overcome his fears and finally find a place to fit in? This European Premiere screening will be introduced by Lusofonias - Oficinas de Português and followed by a Q&A with producer Paula Gomes.

Federico Fellini Retrospective 2020

FILMHOUSECINEMA.COM
One of world cinema’s most exuberantly playful filmmakers, Federico Fellini’s career stretches from post-war neorealism to the MTV era. Although best known for his epochal early 60s films La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2, he first came to international prominence as a director in the mid-1950s, thanks to back-to-back Oscar® wins for La Strada and Nights of Cabiria, both featuring unforgettable central performances from his wife and muse Giulietta Masina as well as the bittersweet music of Nino Rota. Fellini’s kaleidoscopic, often sharply satirical narratives draw freely from his own personal obsessions, fantasies and memories and have gone on influence several generations of directors, from David Lynch to Pedro Almodóvar, Sofia Coppola to Paolo Sorrentino. This season marks the centenary of his birth and offers a rare opportunity to savour Fellini’s extraordinary body of work on the big screen. This retrospective is part of the Fellini 100 official international tour, coordinated by the Italian Ministry of Culture, led by Istituto Luce-Cinecittà, who have provided the films. All films have been digitally restored by Istituto Luce-Cinecittà, Cineteca di Bologna and Cineteca Nazionale. With thanks to the Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh. All text is courtesy of Dr. Pasquale Iannone, who will introduce selected screenings.

LA STRADA Fri 24 to Sun 26 Jan Federico Fellini • Italy 1954 • 1h48m • Digital • Italian with English subtitles • PG • Cast: Giulietta Masina, Anthony Quinn, Richard Basehart, Aldo Silvani, Marcella Rovere, Livia Venturini.
An unassuming milestone of world cinema, Fellini’s heartbreaking tale of Gelsomina, a guileless young woman sold by her mother to travelling circus strongman Zampanò (Anthony Quinn), made a star of his wife and muse Giulietta Masina. Rich in allegory, La Strada’s influence has been profound, stretching far beyond the medium of cinema (Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson, for instance, both wrote songs inspired by the film).

THE WHITE SHEIK
FELLINI’S ROMA
Mon 20 & Tue 21 Jan
Wed 29 Jan at 12.20pm and 6.00pm
Federico Fellini • Italy 1951• 1h27m • Digital • Italian with English subtitles • U • Cast: Alberto Sordi, Brunella Bovo, Leopoldo Trieste.
Federico Fellini • Italy/France 1972 • 1h58m • Digital • Italian with English subtitles • 15 • Cast: Peter Gonzales, Fiona Florence.
Italian comic actor Alberto Sordi takes on the titular role as the star of a photo comic strip magazine. Newly-wed wife Wanda is one of his biggest fans and, while on her honeymoon with husband Ivan in Rome, is determined to track him down.
Despite hailing from the northern city of Rimini, Fellini was always closely associated with Rome. Spanning several decades - from the Fascist era to the twilight of the hippie movement - Roma is the director’s deeply personal love letter to the Eternal City.
AMARCORD
CASANOVA
Thu 30 Jan to Sun 2 Feb
Mon 3 Feb at 2.30pm and 5.35pm
Federico Fellini • Italy/France 1973 • 2h4m • Digital • Italian and Ancient Greek with English subtitles • 15 - Contains moderate sex and sexual references. • Cast: Pupella Maggio, Magali Noël.
Federico Fellini • Italy 1976 • 2h43m • Digital • Italian, French, German, English, Czech, Latin, Hungarian and Neapolitan with English subtitles • 15 - Contains moderate sex and brief strong nudity. • Cast: Donald Sutherland, Tina Aumont, Cicely Browne.
Amarcord draws on Fellini’s childhood during the Fascist years. Mischievous, satirical and often moving, the film features some jaw-dropping set-pieces together with one of his most wistful main themes.
Casanova is far from fawning hagiography. Fellini used his adaptation of Giacomo Casanova’s memoirs to puncture the myth surrounding the legendary lothario.
I VITELLONI Wed 5 & Thu 6 Feb Federico Fellini • Italy/France 1953 • 1h47m • Digital • Italian with English subtitles • PG - Contains mild sex references. • Cast: Franco Interlenghi, Alberto Sordi, Franco Fabrizi, Leopoldo Trieste.
The best of Fellini went into this bleakly funny study of five young men adrift in the wasteland of their home town. Middle class layabouts living by cadging off their families, aimlessly spending their days in pursuit of amusement while nursing vague ambitions never likely to be more than pipe-dreams, they are trapped as much by their own moral bankruptcy as by the futureless society in which they have never quite grown up.

Federico Fellini • Italy/France 1963 • 2h18m • Digital • Italian, English, French and German with English subtitles • 15 - Contains moderate sex references, hanging scene • Cast: Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Cardinale.
Giulietta Masina won awards at both Cannes and the Oscars for this - her finest - performance as the eternally hopeful, life-loving prostitute Cabiria, untouched by cynicism about life and men.
A famous movie director, unable to find the inspiration to start his new film and harried by people in the industry, his wife and his mistress, retreats into personal recollections, dreams and fantasies.
JULIET OF THE SPIRITS
GIULIETTA DEGLI SPIRITI Wed 12 & Thu 13 Feb
THE VOICE OF THE MOON Sun 23 Feb at 12.55 pm and 5.55pm
Federico Fellini • Italy/France/West Germany 1965 • 2h17m • Digital Italian with English subtitles • 15• Cast: Giulietta Masina, Mario Pisu.
Federico Fellini • Italy/France 1990 • 2h3m • Digital • Italian and Japanese with English subtitles • 12A - Contains moderate sex, sex references. • Cast: Roberto Benigni, Paolo Villaggio, Nadia Ottaviani.
Married for 15 years, Juliet seems to have it all: a beautiful villa, the latest fashions and good friends - if only her wealthy husband would remember their anniversary. Juliet is facing a midlife crisis...
Fellini’s final film is a typically episodic narrative following Ivo, a wide-eyed young man who’s released from a psychiatric hospital. The film includes a dazzling nightclub sequence set to Michael Jackson’s music.
GINGER & FRED GINGER E FRED Tue 25 Feb at 12.40pm and 5.55pm Federico Fellini • Italy/France/West Germany 1986 • 2h7m • Digital Italian and English with English subtitles • 15 - Contains strong language and moderate sex references. • Cast: Giulietta Masina, Marcello Mastroianni.
Originally intended as an episode for an anthology series, Ginger and Fred turned into the first feature-length film collaboration between Fellini and actor wife Giulietta Masina for more than twenty years. It sees her star opposite fellow Fellini regular Marcello Mastroianni as two ageing dancers who are brought out of retirement to perform on TV after decades away from the limelight.

INTERVIEW INTERVISTA Fri 28 Feb at 3.30pm and 6.05pm
Federico Fellini • Italy/France/West Germany 1970 • 1h32m • Digital Italian, French and German with English subtitles • U - Contains very mild bad language, sex references, comic violence. • Cast: Federico Fellini, Riccardo Billi.
Federico Fellini • Italy 1987 • 1h47m • Digital • Italian, Japanese and English with English subtitles • 15 • Cast: Federico Fellini, Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Sergio Rubini, Maurizio Mein, Lara Vandel.
Fruit of his long-standing fascination with the figure of the clown, The Clowns sees the director affectionately recreate episodes from his childhood. Fellini appears in the film himself meeting several important figures.
Intervista evolved into a characteristically free-form piece of filmic autobiography. The picture includes an emotional reunion of the stars of La Dolce Vita, Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg.
IL BIDONE THE SWINDLERS Mon 2 Mar at 6.00pm
Wed 4 Mar at 1.00pm and 6.10pm
Federico Fellini • Italy/France 1955 • 1h31m • Digital • Italian with English subtitles • 12 - Contains mild violence and sex references. Cast: Broderick Crawford, Giulietta Masina, Richard Basehart.
Federico Fellini • Italy/West Germany 1978 • 1h13m • Digital • Italian and German with English subtitles • 12A - Contains mild violence and sex references. • Cast: Broderick Crawford, Richard Basehart.
A trio of petty Roman thieves dress up as priests to con peasants out of their treasures. We see Fellini’s eye for the grotesque and strange all shot through with an uncharacteristically gritty, cynical bleakness.
Fellini made the political allegory Orchestra Rehearsal for Italy’s RAI, a TV film which featured composer Nino Rota’s final score for his long-time collaborator.
ORCHESTRA REHEARSAL
CITY OF WOMEN LA CITTÀ DELLE DONNE Sat 7 Mar at 5.30pm Federico Fellini • Italy/France 1980• 2h19m• Digital• Italian with English subtitles• 18 - Contains strong nudity, sex references and one use of very strong language. • Cast: Marcello Mastroianni, Anna Prucnal.
Marcello Mastroianni, long assumed to be Fellini’s alter ego in La dolce vita and 8 1/2, comes back as a certain Snaporaz, who loses his way and finds himself in a congress of man-hating, man-hungry feminists. At the time of going to print, we are unable to confirm the availability of And The Ship Sails On, Fellini Satyricon and Lights of Variety. We are very much hoping these titles will be available to screen in March.

Dull, suburban, married, with children, until an outbreak of madness infects mom and dad making them thirsty for blood - their own flesh and blood! Their daughter and son try to survive by locking themselves indoors. Veiled as a metaphor for parents destroying their children’s futures, this fun flick will tickle Cage fans and entertain horror enthusiasts.
