Introduction
LOVE & MERCY
THEEB
THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
”If you’re blue and you don’t know where to go to…” As I write this, that’s EIFF over for another year. And what a splendid edition it was! As per, I lent a hand hosting intros and Q&As, and once again had the very real pleasure of meeting a whole bunch of filmmakers who were, as is nearly always the case, lovely folks. None more so than that Ewan McGregor I’d have to say, once I’d gotten over the shock of him not remembering me from the last time we met. I mean, it was only 15 years ago! We now have the long and (presently) hot summer stretching out in front of us, and the triple challenge of competing for your attention against the weather, the world’s biggest arts festival, and the film industry’s habit of clogging the summer schedules mostly with blockbusters… of varying quality. Having said that, there is more interesting stuff around this July/August than usual, and I’m told that is set to continue year on year as the industry shifts its usual practice once again. Customarily, some of those films (Mistress America and 45 Years) are available to our local competition in August and not to us until September for the usual bunch of hokey reasons, but that’s fine because we know you’ll wait to see them here… Despite such challenges, I can confidently assert we’ve delivered an interesting and varied programme despite the seasonal and enforced exiguity (thanks to University of Edinburgh alumnus Roget for that one) of our preferred kind of films. One of the films that the local competition I mentioned earlier doesn’t, thankfully, seem so keen on is Theeb (page 6), but it’s actually the best of the lot. I watched it many months ago and had no particular expectation of it as just one of hundreds of films needing to be assessed for screening here, but fell for it in a big way. It’s set during the First World War, around the same time and place as Lawrence of Arabia, and tells the tale of the young Bedouin boy of the title, drawn by his devotion to his elder brother into the dangerous world of men – soldiers and bandits – and the desert. Many of the screenings are in our biggest screen to make the most of the stunning Fordian/Monument Valley-evoking Jordanian locations. If you see only one film this month, I would make it this one. Trust me, you won’t regret it - and if you do, then I’ll try my best not to despair of you! Use the Filmhouse Explorer deal (page 4) and enjoy what might be the best cultural experience you can have for £4.50… The Diary of a Teenage Girl gets a release following its triumphant EIFF bow (sorry ladies and gents, we can’t promise Mr Skarsgård in attendance this time); and, playing like a Spanish True Detective, the 10 Goya-winning Marshland (La isla mínima) tells the dark tale of two homicide cops on the hunt for a serial killer in the astonishing landscape of the country’s deep south Doñana region. Beyond Diary, there’s also a whole host of other films coming around that played at EIFF, such as the brilliant, very singular take on the biopic (of Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson); Love & Mercy; and Oliver Hirschbiegel’s stirring and harrowing film, 13 Minutes, about the man who nearly blew up Hitler in 1939. And there’s a few classic restorations too, including Dziga Vertov’s seminal doc; Man with a Movie Camera; Hoskins and Mirren in The Long Good Friday and Jirí Menzel’s Oscar-winning Closely Observed Trains. We’re partnering up again with our friends at the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival Powered by YouTube (26-28 August) for some great events; and comedian Greg Proops drops in for a couple of editions of his Film Club, where he’ll be hosting rare screenings of Bullitt and Young Frankenstein. At the beginning of the 1980s, Spain is still undergoing its transition to democracy after decades of Fascist rule under Franco. In Villafranco del Guadalquivir, a forgotten town in the wetlands of Andalusia, two teenage girls go missing, bringing two homicide detectives from Madrid to try and track them down. With troubled pasts and decidedly contrasting approaches, Juan (Javier Gutiérrez) and Pedro (Raúl Arévalo) must put aside their differences to hunt a predator who has spent years terrorising a community rooted in misogyny and machismo. Drawing equally on classic noir and modern detective drama, director Alberto Rodríguez (7 Virgins) has crafted a tense and richly textured period thriller.
In 1970s San Francisco, precocious young cartoonist Minnie (Bel Powley) can’t wait to grow up. Her mother’s (Kristen Wiig) no-holds-barred approach to partying colours her adolescent judgement, encouraging her to seek grown-up thrills anywhere she can. Instigating a liaison with her mother’s boyfriend, Monroe (Alexander Skarsgård), she begins a passionate affair with a man two decades her senior, and despite the age gap remains utterly in control. Expertly handled and light-hearted in tone, the film boasts great performances, including a truly accomplished central performance from star-in-theascendant Bel Powley.
Somewhere in the Argentinean rainforest, a mysterious man (Gael García Bernal) witnesses the brutal murder of an innocent farmer and the abduction of his daughter. With an instinctive knowledge of the surrounding area, he sets out to rescue her, leaving a series of inventive and brutal booby-traps in his wake for anyone who dares to follow him. Modelled on the Westerns of Ford and Leone, and with a slew of stylishly bloody setpieces, The Burning is a visually jolting thrillride of vengeance and valour.

Oliver Hirschbiegel • Germany 2015 • 1h50m • Digital • German with English subtitles • 15 - Contains scenes of torture, hanging Cast: Christian Friedel, Katharina Schüttler, Burghart Klaußner, Johann von Bülow.
An 18-year-old secondary-school girl, Sakuko, learns about the deceptions of the adult world in this pleasingly lowkey and thoughtful film from director Koji Fukada. When she accompanies her aunt on a seaside summer holiday, the new faces she encounters include a philandering college professor, a tough young waitress and a troubled young refugee from Fukushima who is working at his uncle’s love hotel. The spirit of Eric Rohmer lives in Japan!
Oliver Hirschbiegel returns to the Second World War (he made the acclaimed film Downfall) and German-language cinema for this tense and fascinating story about a determined German man who tried to assassinate Hitler in 1939. He brilliantly fleshes out the story of Georg Elser (an impressive Christian Friedel), who planted a bomb behind Hitler’s lectern in a Munich beer cellar. But the explosion missed by those 13 minutes. A gripping look at Germany in the early years of Hitler, and a tribute to a man of great courage and will.

1916. In the farthest reaches of the Ottoman Empire, a young Bedouin boy, Theeb (Eid Al-Hwietat, impressive in this title role), and his brother Hussein (Salameh) act as guides to a British Officer (Fox) and his companion. When - suddenly and abruptly - their plans go awry, the brothers must adapt and survive in the desolate yet beautiful landscapes of the Hijaz region. With tense sequences and knowing nods to classic Westerns, this coming-of-age adventure is an impressive debut from its director, Naji Abu Nowar.

The summer of 1968 saw a milestone in American television history, when then-struggling ABC broadcasted a series of live debates between liberal Gore Vidal and conservative WIlliam F. Buckley Jr. Explosive exchanges were to follow, and both men’s mistrust for one another was matched only their belief in their own respective ideologies. Audiences, riveted, tuned in en masse, and this arguably marked the beginning of modern television political punditry. Best of Enemies examines these irrevocably intertwined men, their verbal sparring and the televisual influence on
Dziga Vertov • Soviet Union 1929 • 1h8m • Digital • Silent U - Contains funeral and childbirth images
The best-known work of experimental documentary pioneer Dziga Vertov, Man with a Movie Camera is one the most influential films in cinema history. A poetic vision of urban life in 1920s Russia, Vertov’s extraordinary montage presents a bustling city at work and at play - a high-octane metropolis invigorated by an increasingly industrialised economy. Narrative-free and stripped of many of the conventions of silent cinema, the film exhibits a technical confidence that belies the fact that it was the director’s first feature. With its stunning range of camera angles and imaginative use of cinematic tricks (including dissolves, split screen, slow motion and freeze-frames), Vertov’s ‘mechanical eye’takes centre-stage, his images ingeniously edited together to present an exhilarating ode to Bolshevik Russia. The 23 August 3.15pm screening of Man with a Movie Camera will be introduced by Dr David Sorfa, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh.

Director Peter Bogdanovich throws back the years and delivers a screwball romp that is reminiscent of his 1970s classic What’s Up, Doc? The strong cast - including Owen Wilson, Imogen Poots, Jennifer Aniston and Rhys Ifans - shine in this story of privileged showbiz types: a hooker with a heart of gold, obsessed older men and an angry therapist. A devastating health documentary that will have you seriously looking at your food choices and worrying about sugar intake. The debut film from Australian actor Damon Gameau, who sets out to expose (in true Morgan Spurlock style) how much sugar we consume without even realising it. The science is presented in fun ways - plus he has cameos from Hugh Jackman and Stephen Fry to help things along - but at heart this is a serious film with a tough message. And not one to sugar-coat. When a series of bizarre crimes breaks out in Northern France - beginning with one in which a corpse is found stuffed inside a dead cow hidden in a World War II bunker - Commandant Van der Weyden is sent to investigate. But, throughout, he is dogged by a gang of young scoundrels, led by the eponymous P’tit Quinquin. Originally conceived as a four-part television serial, P’tit Quinquin is a slapstick, metaphysical murder mystery pitched somewhere between Twin Peaks and True Detective, and with a lead character equal parts Clouseau and Columbo. Directed by the acclaimed Bruno Dumont (La vie de Jésus, Hors Satan), and with a cast composed entirely of local actors, the film is absurdly humorous - but also does not shy away from the director’s trademark controversialism, here manifested in some decidedly unpleasant depictions of casual racism.
For over half a century, it was thought that most of the films starring master magician Harry Houdini had not survived. But, in 2015, silent cinema and magic fans alike thrilled to the rediscovery of the complete The Grim Game, now restored to its full length after only previously existing in a five-minute excerpt. In it, Houdini stars as Harvey Hanford, a reporter who attempts to break into jail by faking his uncle’s murder. But, when his uncle is found killed by a gang who have framed Hanford and kidnapped his girlfriend, he must go out of his way to prove his innocence. Which means, of course, that he must undertake a spectacular series of increasingly daredevil escapes from those who try to hold him back. Capturing on camera some of Houdini’s greatest tricks including the still-stunning feat of freeing himself from a straitjacket whilst suspended from the top of a skyscraper - The Grim Game is a marvel of genuine movie magic. Screens with a new recorded score by composer Brane Zivkovic.

A terminal cancer diagnosis is met with a buoyant and inspiring response in Julien Temple’s freeform documentary. The patient: former Dr. Feelgood and The Blockheads guitarist, Wilko Johnson. Widowed nine years earlier in similar circumstances, Johnson’s reaction to his own looming mortality was to embrace a new appreciation of life. As he embarks on a ‘farewell tour’ and the recording of a long-discussed album with old friend Roger Daltry, Johnson’s sudden joie de vivre in the face of grim circumstances is matched by Temple’s distinctive, digressive filmmaking style.
Alice Rohrwacher • Italy/Switzerland/Germany 2014 • 1h51m • Digital • Italian, French and German with English subtitles 15 - Contains strong language Cast: Maria Alexandra Lungu, Sam Louwyck, Alba Rohrwacher, Sabine Timoteo, Agnese Graziani, Monica Bellucci.
The family of 12-year-old Gelsomina (Maria Alexandra Lungu, in an extraordinary debut) lives in the Italian countryside, tending to their beehives and staying at arm’s length from the outside world. But that world is growing ever more unavoidable, whether in the form of hunters who stalk their land by night or new regulations on their honey harvesting. One summer, the family’s fragile unity is attacked on two fronts: by the arrival of Martin, a boy from a work rehabilitation program, and from‘Countryside Wonders’, a glitzy prize competition hosted by ambiguous star Milly Catena (Monica Bellucci). Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, this second fiction feature by Alice Rohrwacher (Corpo Celeste) is a glimpse into a meticulously-constructed rural world, filmed with the objective eye of a seasoned documentarian and shot through with expertly-deployed touches of wry humour and magic realism.
A compelling chronicle of the French electronic music scene, from underground raves to established eminence, all set to a pulse-pounding soundtrack. Centred on the experiences of co-writer and influential DJ Sven Løve (brother of director Mia Hansen-Løve), Eden follows rising musical talent Paul Vallée (Félix de Givry) over more than two decades. Although he helps found the influential ‘Cheers’ club night, and watches two local talents go on to world domination as Daft Punk, his immediate circle of friends enjoy only small-scale successes and mainly insular fame. As this balances against a string of broken relationships, as well as personal tragedies, financial setbacks and expensive drug habits, it becomes increasingly apparent to those around Paul that the musical paradise of their youth may already be lost. “Mia Hansen-Løve’s Eden is the most interesting movie I’ve seen so far in 2015: gorgeous, haunting, epic and intimate.” - Bret Easton Ellis

Henry Hobson • USA 2015 • 1h35m • Digital 15 - Contains strong threat, bloody images Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Abigail Breslin, Joely Richardson.
This gripping story of police corruption gone out of control makes for gripping viewing. The title refers to the Brooklyn precinct where young patrolman Michael Dowd morphed from smart young recruit to a hardened criminal who stole money and drugs and later worked alongside a Dominican drug baron. The true stories of dirty cops who worked alongside brutal drugs gangs in New York in the 1980s prove more amazing than any fictional version, the interviews are gripping and the documentary becomes a fascinating delve into a world of gleeful corruption.
This is no simple, formally-structured biopic. Instead, Bill Pohlad’s mesmeric film focuses on two contrasting periods in the life of Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson: the sun-kissed success of the 1960s, when Wilson (played by Paul Dano) defined the sound of the group; and then contemporary times, where the middle-aged Wilson (now played by John Cusack) starts a romance that sees him set to clash with a controversial therapist who has taken over all aspects of his life. An elusive and enthralling film.
A zombie film with an art-film sensibility, the engrossing, engaging and genuinely moving Maggie sees a bearded Arnold Schwarzenegger at his very best as a loving Midwest farmer who is determined to bring his daughter Maggie (Abigail Breslin) home after she is infected by cannibalistic zombies. As the disease takes hold, her loving father stays by her side, fending off the military and police (as well as other zombies) with the inevitable transformation growing ever closer. A memorable variation on the zombie movie.
After Love & Mercy, see the real Brian Wilson in The Wrecking Crew (page 11), a documentary about the session musicians who played on hundreds of classic 60s albums, including Pet Sounds.

A wealthy London mob boss struggles to retain control of his untouchable lifestyle when he unwittingly becomes a target of the Irish Republican Army. In a changing city where property development is exploding into life and corruption is accordingly rife, gangster kingpin Harold Shand (Hoskins) sees his ambitious plans go awry when he is routed by a sudden and unexpected IRA attack. John Mackenzie’s hard-edged thriller showcases the talents of two British all-time greats - Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren - and skilfully weaves cultural themes and events of the late 1970s into its plot, culminating in a truly memorable final scene. The 1 September 1.00pm screening of The Long Good Friday will be introduced by Dr Jonny Murray, Senior Lecturer in Film and Visual Culture at Edinburgh College of Art.
In the spirit of Standing in the Shadows of Motown and 20 Feet from Stardom, The Wrecking Crew explores how a single group of session musicians - known to those in the industry, but barely heard of outside it - provided the backing music for an entire swathe of iconic pop songs during the 1960s. Their previously unheralded contributions were to affect tracks from ‘Mrs Robinson’ to the ‘Mission: Impossible’ theme, and for artists ranging from Nat ‘King’ Cole and Frank Sinatra to the Beach Boys and Ike & Tina Turner.

Emmet is a perfectly ordinary, generic construction worker. He spends his days following the instructions and building whatever is desired of him. That is until he discovers the Piece of Resistance, a relic which heralds the coming of ‘The Special’. As the prophesy has foretold, The Special will save the world from ultimate destruction. Emmet goes on a wild adventure through all the Lego realms, from The Wild West to Cloud Cuckoo Land, on a quest to save the world and ultimately discover what is truly special about himself.

Peter Yates • USA 1968 • 1h53m • 15 - Contains strong violence. Cast: Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, Jacqueline Bisset, Don Gordon, Simon Oakland.
The Greg Proops Film Club is a popular new podcast covering old and new movies. Quick-witted US comedian Greg Proops invites you to sit down and watch some of his favorite movies with him. It’s the cinematic companion piece you never knew you wanted (but can’t live without!) from the Smartest Man in the World.
Steve McQueen thriller about a taciturn cop and his awesome wardrobe. Suede bootlets, turtlenecks, tweed coats with patches and a groovy shoulder holster - Clint stole the outfit for Dirty Harry. Jacqueline Bisset is an architect and her hair is great. The timeless theme of corrupt rich people covering up their dastardly crimes is embodied in the oily Robert Vaughn as Mr. Chalmers. A postcard travelogue of San Francisco in the 60s, the city even let them shoot up the airport - try that now! Also, one of the great insane car chases in movie history where, yes - McQueen did his own driving. You will thrilled by the chase and you’ll goggle at the clothes. No one will be seated during the last 15 grimaces by Steve McQueen.
Mel Brooks • USA 1974 • 1h46m • Digital • English and German with English subtitles • PG - Contains mild language and sex references, and comic horror Cast: Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr.
Greg will give live introductions (30 mins approx.) - which will be recorded for the podcast - before the two screenings. And, after the films, join Greg in the foyer where he will be signing copies of his new Smartest Book in the World. (The book will also be available for purchase from the Filmhouse box office from Sun 23 Aug until Fri 28 Aug.)
Mel Brooks’ best-made picture. I saw this when it first came out and the audience was literally crying with laughter. A black and white riot - guaranteed. If you have not seen this on the big screen, now is the time. Gene Wilder is wildly over the top as the egomaniacal mad doctor; Madeline Kahn is superb as his society girlfriend and victim of the monster; Peter Boyle is brilliant as the monster; and Marty Feldman as Igor (whose hump is everchanging) is in top form. Rounding out a fantastic cast are Cloris Leachman as the old crone of the castle, Frau Blücher; Teri Garr as the sexy assistant, Inga; and Kenneth Mars theTransylvanian prefect of police. This is a pitch-perfect parody of a Universal Horror film of the 30’s. But so what? It is an all time great comedy. Shameless, loud and full of naughty sex jokes. Be there, or say you were.

Coming Soon Our September 2015 brochure will feature a stateside return for Woody, the Michael Powell Award winner from EIFF 2015, an Antonioni restoration and a special screening for Pink Floyd fans to savour... NEWRELEASES
Irrational Man Showing from Fri 11 Sep Woody Allen • USA 2015 • 1h36m • Digital • cert tbc Cast: Jamie Blackley, Joaquin Phoenix, Parker Posey, Emma Stone.
Woody Allen’s 45th feature sees him returning from continental Europe to the leafy collegiate environs of Rhode Island. Here, writer and newly-appointed professor Abe (Joaquin Phoenix) is in the midst of grappling with a long-standing bout of ennui - unable to write, uninterested in life and unhappy in his competing relationships with colleague Rita (Parker Posey) and brilliant student Jill (Emma Stone). But, after overhearing a passing conversation at a restaurant, Abe finds himself drawn down an unexpected path, leading him towards philosophical crises, hidden dangers and late-night games of Russian roulette...

Roger Waters The Wall
Andrew Haigh • UK 2014 •1h35m • Digital 15 - Contains strong language, sex. Cast: Charlotte Rampling, Tom Courtenay, Dolly Wells, Geraldine James.
Tue 29 Sep only
One of the best British films of the year, Andrew Haigh’s subtly devastating film is about the fractured relationship between a couple - delightfully played by Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay - as they head towards their 45th wedding anniversary party. A powerful and enthralling follow-up to Haigh’s critically acclaimed 2011 film Weekend, the film (winner of the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film at Edinburgh International Film Festival 2015) dwells on how an apparently happy union can be tormented by an echo from the past, with a decades-long bond threatened by insecurities and irrational jealousy.
Roger Waters & Sean Evans • UK 2014 • 2h15m • Digital English and French with English subtitles • cert tbc Cast: Concert film featuring Roger Waters, Nick Mason.
Roger Waters, co-founder and primary songwriter of Pink Floyd, fuses the epic and the personal in Roger Waters The Wall, a concert film that goes well beyond the stage. Based on the groundbreaking concept album, Roger Waters The Wall could be called a concept film: it’s a state-of-the-art show that dazzles the senses, combined with an intensely personal road trip that deals with the loss Roger has felt throughout his life due to war. After the film we will present The Simple Facts, a unique opportunity to see Roger Waters and his Pink Floyd bandmate Nick Mason - reunited, unscripted and in conversation, answering questions submitted by fans from around the world.
ALSO COMING SOON L’Eclisse A new restoration of Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1962 film, starring Monica Vitti and Alain Delon. Take One Action Film Festival The 8th Take One Action Film Festival promises yet another armful of the most inspiring new international films, debates and avenues for change for a better world. Mistress America Noah Baumbach’s second writing collaboration with Greta Gerwig (who also stars) is a smart, witty comedy drama about a disillusioned college student who is taken under the wing of her spontaneous soon-to-be stepsister.

HONEYMOON
Made in Prague A biennial UK showcase of contemporary Czech cinema, is back for the fifth time with five titles crisscrossing the UK. Capturing the country´s dramatic past and its influence on contemporary life and culture, five internationally acclaimed films tour 24 UK venues. Burning Bush, a mesmerising docudrama by Polish/US director Agnieszka Holland portrays the Czech experience after the 1968 Soviet invasion of the country and draws on her personal experience, while Andrea Sedlackova´s Fair Play is an intimate study of a young female athlete caught in a web of state sponsored doping. In the contemporary psychological drama Honeymoon by Jan Hrebejk, the happiness of the central couple is threatened when an uninvited wedding guest questions the groom’s past. Miroslav Krobot’s humourous debut Nowhere in Moravia focuses on eccentric characters looking for love and living an isolated life; whereas in Martin Dusek´s fascinating and sensitive documentary Into the Clouds We Gaze it is car tuning which substitutes for love and lack of opportunities for the main character.
BURNING BUSH
Burning Bush Horící ker
Sun 9 Aug only Agnieszka Holland • Czech Republic 2013 • 3h26m • Digital Czech with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Tatiana Pauhofová, Jaroslava Pokorná, Petr Stach
In protest against the Soviet occupation, student Jan Palach set himself on fire in Prague in January 1969. As the police searched for his followers, the government began a denunciation campaign against Palach, forcing his family to hire charismatic attorney Dagmar Buresova (Tatiana Pauhofová) to defend his reputation. Concentrating on the impact Palach’s sacrifice had within the social and political climate, director Agnieszka Holland acutely depicts a web of conflicts among the student protesters, the police and the media, all of whom attempt to advance their own interests while watching their backs. Anna, a talented young sprinter, is in training for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. When she finds out, she risks everything by refusing to continue, forcing her dissident mother, who sees the Olympics as Anna’s escape route, to conspire against her. Highlighting the Eastern Bloc policy of doping athletes, director Andrea Sedlácková delivers a powerful account of how the Communist régime sought to control the lives of individuals, and the moral dilemmas which resulted. Thirty-something Maruna runs the local pub and lives with her sister and domineering mother. With few eligible men around, she sleeps with the blundering mayor and a promiscuous roofer while looking for love. This darkly humorous debut from Miroslav Krobot presents a deadpan portrait of village life - one which opens with a funeral and closes with a murder. Its eccentric characters live their isolated lives in a forgotten place of grim beauty, and their characters are wonderfully captured by actors from the award-winning Dejvice Theatre Company.
Jan Hrebejk directs this gripping drama about a rich society wedding thrown into chaos by the arrival of a stranger with a horrifying accusation to make - one which implicates the groom in a violent incident from the past. Beautifully acted by an expansive cast, and shot with the elegance and clarity of a Robert Altman classic, the film recalls Dogme 95 masterpiece Festen in its exploration of privilege, corruption and the horrible repercussions of suppressing ugly secrets. At once acidly funny and painfully moving, Honeymoon makes for compulsive viewing.

A beautifully shot observational film from documentarian Martin Dusek (The Analogs), this riveting study of a proud petrolhead living in Bohemia combines shrewd observation and haunting imagery to paint a portrait of a very specific lifestyle and place in time. A funny, melancholic and lyrical portrait of boredom, stasis and the culture of aimless Czech youth, set in one of the more remote areas of modern Europe.

Thu 20 Aug at 6.10pm
Made over five years, this self-styled‘frockumentary’follows a sextet of stars of the East End drag scene, recounting how they became involved in London’s alternative drag phenomenon and watching how their lives change during the filming. As Amber embarks on her transition and Scottee finds success with his confrontational one-man shows, Holestar battles against prejudice about women performing drag acts and DJ John Sizzle considers retiring from the scene altogether. A raucous, riotous spectacular with a killer soundtrack, and an ultimately joyous celebration of a group who have left their glittery mark on the face of East London for all time. Scotland’s premier Queer Party Dive (2014 List Top 100), Filmhouse and Edinburgh’s ‘Queen of Cabaret’ Miss Annabel Sings have joined forces to present a cabaret in the Café Bar just before the film. Hosted by Miss Annabel (“Divine” - Time Out) and starring Jonny Woo (one of the stars of Dressed as a Girl) and a bevy of wonderful queer performers from all over the country. Expect a half hour of high-speed, high-energy, high-kicking fun! The show will start at 9.00pm. See you there, darlings!

All is well with this unconventional arrangement - until their fairytale existence takes a unexpected turn. Premiered in the Un Certain Regard competition at Cannes, A Girl at My Door is a fresh and rare gem from July Jung, one of the few female filmmakers to have emerged from South Korea.

Television Festival powered by YouTube
The Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival powered by YouTube is one of the most prestigious media events in the UK – bringing together all parts of the television and digital world to celebrate the creativity, diversity and inspirational talent in our field, and to debate the major issues facing us as an industry. Established in 1976, we’re still the only event both run by and for the television industry - as the Festival is governed by its Executive and Advisory committees. We are a charitable organisation with a mission to identify and nurture the next generation of talent, whatever their background. We run two talent schemes – The Network gives brand new entrants a vital first step into the TV and digital industries while Ones to Watch supports those at the early stages of their career. Both benefit from fully-funded places at the Festival which includes tailored workshops, masterclasses and networking, plus we offer year-round mentoring, training and events. www.thetvfestival.com

The enormously popular, BAFTA-award winning competition for professional chefs returns to BBC Two this autumn for its eighth series. Formidable perfectionist Monica Galetti has been assessing the skills, commitment, palate and style of MasterChef: The Professionals for the last seven series and this series launch sees Marcus Wareing and Gregg Wallace team up once again to judge the country’s most high-end cooking competition. After an exclusive preview screening of the first episode, judge and chef Monica Galetti will be answering questions about the incredible competition which sees professional chefs tested, challenged and pushed to the edge of their gastronomic limits, in the hunt for the next culinary superstar.
Join Scottish indie rock band Glasvegas in an exclusive screening of Singing in the Rainforest, the new show from Watch, which sees musicians leave their creature comforts behind and embrace life with remote tribes from all around the world. Glasvegas visited the Waorani of Bameno, Ecuador in one of the most remote areas of the Amazon rainforest. Bameno is located two days, by canoe, from the nearest road and all of the band’s equipment had to be paddled in. Each episode of Singing in the Rainforest, produced by Gogglebox Entertainment, a joint venture with Sony Pictures Television, takes well-known artists and bands out of their natural environment and challenges them to immerse themselves in tribal life for one week, with no home comforts to fall back on. They will be exposed to rituals, customs and above all the tribe’s musical culture and, in turn, the artists will present their style of music to the tribe. At the end of the week the visiting musicians will collaborate with their hosts and create a piece of music that will be played in a grand finale concert for the village and its neighbours. The newly recorded track, which will blend two very different musical cultures together, will be made available for download, with shares of the sales benefitting the tribe. The screening will be followed by a Q&A chaired by Andrew Collins, and a live performance from the band. £12/£8

Drone brings us inside the covert CIA drone war. The film follows those who live under drones in Pakistan, and the drone pilots who struggle with the new warfare. It covers the recruitment of young pilots at gaming conventions; the re-definition of ‘going to war’; the morals of engineers behind the technology; the world leaders giving the secret ‘greenlight’ to a targeted killing program outside declared war zones; and the people who fight for transparency, accountability and justice. In the face of rapid technological advancements and lagging international legislation, the film shows how drones have already changed war and may affect our future. Join us after the screening as we meet with experts on drone usage to discuss the challenges of 21st century warfare.

The euphemistic “culture of welcome” pervades this film, which documents the results when two well-to-do North German villages are obliged to welcome a group of asylum seekers. Their denizens hastily form citizens’ initiatives to take legal action against this impending doom, all the while stressing just how welcome the foreigners are in principle - although only in reasonable numbers, and not to their town. A Very German Welcome casts a harsh light on everyday racism that comes in the guise of charity and democracy, but also doesn’t fail to recognise those who buck this trend.

7 Days in Syria
Newsweek Middle East editor Janine di Giovanni submitted a proposal to cover the war in Syria. The magazine denied the request, deeming the situation too dangerous. She decided to go anyway. Journalists are targets, yet she and her crew put themselves in harm’s way to make sure the world knows about the suffering of the Syrian people. 7 Days in Syria is a documentary feature unlike any other, offering a glimpse at life during war, and insight into the incredible lengths to which journalists will go to shine a light in the darkest places on earth. Join us after the screening as we meet with producer Scott M Rosenfelt, and hear about the making of the film and the importance of journalists working in dangerous circumstances.
Burden of Peace tells the impressive story of Claudia Paz y Paz, the first woman to lead the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Guatemala. The country, ravaged for years by a devastating civil war in which nearly 200,000 Mayan Indians were systematically massacred, is today one of the most violent in the world. As Paz begins an attack against corruption and drug gangs, she does something everyone had hitherto thought impossible: she arrests former dictator Efraín Rios Montt on charges of genocide, leading to the first-ever conviction of a former head of state for genocide in a national court.
God Is Not Working on Sunday! reveals the reality of today’s Rwanda, a country still coping with the consequences of genocide. Twenty years on, it is considered one of the most economically successful countries on the African continent. And, in particular, the emancipation of women has moved the country forward. But the trauma of war still persists in the minds of many women. Director Leona Goldstein follows the work of activists Godelieve and Florida as, together, they help women overcome difficult memories of the past and the burdens of their present lives, and encourage women to speak out, fight for their rights and support each other.

In the darkness of a cinema space, the audience sits blindfolded. Behind each row of audience members is a row of children who in hushed voices describe a film only they can see. Accompanied by the soundtrack (which has no dialogue), the whispered descriptions are a fragile, fragmentary and at times struggling but courageous attempt by the children to make sense of what they see projected on the screen. Based on the method of audio description, Blind CInema is an experience where the act of watching a film becomes a shared investment: A collaborative and imaginative act between seeing children and blinded adults. It embraces the fact that the act of trying to find the right words to describe (even if at times being ‘at a loss for words’) and of trying to hold onto the unstable images created in the mind’s eye, will always only be an approximation. In focusing on that which lies beyond the sense of sight (leaving the illusory reality of cinema to re-enter that of the imagination), the attention oscillates between each shared but internal world guided by the whispering voice, and the shared physical space of the darkened cinema. Note: The film screened during the performance will be seen by the children for the first time. Each performance involves a new group of children (aged between 8 and 11) and is preceded by a workshop.
Presented by Screen Education Edinburgh in partnership with Filmhouse, the Write Shoot Cut platform is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing independent short films from Scotland. This month we have five short films either made by Scottish based talent. We have laugh out loud comedy, thoughtful drama, beautiful imagery and insanity personified! Each film will be followed with a Q&A with the filmmakers involved, giving the audience the chance to enjoy what they see and gain an insight into the creative process. If you are a filmmaker, or someone with an interest in Scottish film and a desire to see something out of the ordinary, then this is an excellent opportunity to connect with the local scene, watch some great films, network afterwards in the bar and meet potential collaborators.
Hailed by some as one of the most elegaic anti-war films ever made, Peter Weir’s Gallipoli is the defining cinematic treatment of the disastrous First World War military campaign which began in April 1915, on what is now known as Anzac Day. The film centres on the friendship of two young Australian sprinters, Archy Hamilton (Mark Lee) and Frank Dunne (Mel Gibson), who, although fictional, stand for so many of the idealistic young men of their country who headed off to join the army and see the world. Together, they trek across the outback towards Perth, then onward to Cairo and, finally, Turkey - little guessing the horrors that lay in wait for them there. Our screening of the film coincides with the historical event which forms its climax: the futile Battle of the Nek, a doomed final push against the Turkish trenches which took place on 7 August 1915. Screening as part of The First World War in Cinema, a four-year series of films, programmed in association with the University of Edinburgh, that relate to the First World War, some timed to coincide with the real events of 100 years ago and others which are not tied to specific dates.

The Adventures of Prince Achmed, with live score by Sink Thu 13 Aug at 9.00pm Lotte Reiniger • Germany 1926 • 1h5m • No dialogue • U
Widely considered to be the first full-length animated feature in the history of cinema, The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a superlative piece of storytelling with some experimental and semi-abstract sequences thrown in. Based loosely on the Arabian Nights, the film is an exciting and fast paced tale of sword fights, chases, genies and adventure. Continuing a four year collaboration with Filmhouse, acoustic trio Sink are delighted to bring their sounds to this very special animated feature. Reaching beyond their more usual instrumentation of violin, accordion and saxophone to include mizmar, tuned percussion and vocal elements in a score that is in part composed and in part conjured, like painting bright colours onto black and white film, they shall set the quiet air into magical vibration. www.theplughole.org Tickets £10/£8 (Photo credit: Olivier Bardina)

Dirty Harry Mon 24 Aug at 8.15pm Don Siegel • USA 1971 • 1h42m • Digital 15 - Contains strong violence Cast: Clint Eastwood, Andrew Robinson, Reni Santoni, Harry Guardino, John Vernon.
As well as providing one of the most quotable questions in all of cinema, Don Siegel’s fourth collaboration with Clint Eastwood is a crisp, suspenseful cat-and-mouse crime thriller that manages to raise difficult questions about the ethics of law and order in the process. Tough, sardonic San Francisco police inspector Harry Callahan (Eastwood) is assigned to track and apprehend an unhinged, manipulative killer (Andrew Robinson), and finds himself forced to go beyond the stringent limits of protocol to stop him. An iconic role for Eastwood - channelling his Western intensity into Siegel’s expertly-shot urban setting - and the mould from which many rogue cop thrillers have been fashioned.
The Man Who Would Be King Tue 25 Aug at 2.30pm & 8.20pm John Huston • Britain/USA 1975 • 2h9m • 35mm • PG Cast: Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Christopher Plummer, Saeed Jaffrey, Doghmi Larbi.
In John Huston’s wonderfully enjoyable adaptation of a story by Rudyard Kipling, Sean Connery and Michael Caine play two British soldiers-of-fortune seeking their wealth in a remote region of Afghanistan. The film is a classic adventure that makes sharp thrusts at imperialism and the corrosive effects of power, and Connery and Caine are perfectly matched as the comrades whose wit, courage, and ambition carries them towards the fulfilment of their dream.
