A screening by AD Media & Events as a Polish contribution to Cinema Day in Belfast. The film is directed by Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski, based in the UK. A college lecturer flees to Paris after a scandal costs him his job. In the City of Light, he meets a widow who might be involved in a series of murders.

His animal friends try to convince him to leave the jungle before the return of the evil tiger Shere Khan. Will Mowgli remain with his friends or will he go to live a new life with the humans?

The Celluloid Man 7:00pm (doors open 6:30pm), Beanbag Cinema, Exchange Place, Belfast BT1 2NA This is the story of Mr P.K. Nair, a man who talks, eats, dreams and sleeps cinema. Lovingly known as Henri Langlois of India, P.K. Nair is the man behind the archiving of many films in India. Like the grown-up protagonist in 1988’s Cinema Paradiso, Nair is often glimpsed bathed in the glow of a flickering cinema screen as the film depicts a man with an all-consuming passion. As physical film rapidly gives way to digital media, The Celluloid Man’s illuminating and impassioned case for continual film preservation resonates deeply. In The Celluloid Man we have a delightful and insightful documentary that is above all else a love letter to cinema itself. Ken Loach Double Bill: Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach and I, Daniel Blake 5:00pm Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach
This is a fitting tribute to a director who has made a career out of telling the stories that most urgently need to be told. Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach is a documentary on the life and times of his politics in British TV and Cinema and the chaos he has caused the establishment for 50 years. I, Daniel Blake is a stark portrayal of a man thrust into the benefits system after suffering a heart attack. He is declared fit for work despite his illness. Jimmy’s Hall
The Aurora returns to Rostrevor
3:00pm, 53 Sawmill Road, Ballyclare BT39 9SY Jimmy Gralton returns home to Ireland after years of exile. When he – “an intruder” - reopens the village hall, enabling the community to gather, sing, dance, paint, study & box, the local establishment take a dim view. People who think and unite are difficult to manipulate, aren’t they? From the moment Jimmy re-opens his hall, the establishment bully and use every means possible to get rid of him and his “dangerous” hall. Director Ken Loach’s 2014 film – set in 1932, post partition, pre “troubles” – somehow resonates with 2017 Northern Ireland and its current political polarisation. Please note: The screening is being held in an old farm barn building. There is no heating, so dress according to the weather. Be prepared to use a domestic toilet. Unfortunately, the venue is not wheelchair accessible. This is an intimate and unique venue so expect a “cosy” experience. Refreshments will be available at the venue.

The Passion of Joan of Arc (film and live score) 8.15pm, Strand Arts Centre, 152-154 Holywood Road, Belfast. The Passion of Joan of Arc is hailed as a landmark of cinema. The 1928 silent film depicts one of history’s most captivating women. It is a prime example of how some of cinema’s greatest ever storytelling was achieved without the need for dialogue. The film will be accompanied by an original live score by musicians Heliopause & This Ship Argo, using layered vocal loops and electronica to emphasise the film’s unusual cinematography and portrayal of Joan’s emotional state of mind. So extraordinary is this film’s power, you will believe you are watching her actual trial. Directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, France, 1928, 115 minutes, Cert: PG Basic disability access.
