Vito Ippolito FIM President “The 2011 season has come to an end and the time has come for us to reward all our Champions in a ceremony that will hopefully do justice to their efforts and achievements, and be seen through television by many TV viewers throughout the world. It is exactly this type of exposure that has helped redefine all our disciplines over more recent years with all forms of motorcycle sport enjoying increased coverage both on TV and in the media of the highest quality. So today we can be both pleased and proud to see some motorycle sports ranking alongside some of the most major sports in the World. We welcome the people who are the most important in the sport and acknowledge the status that they have earned through their achievements: our riders are the real heroes of our sport. Every sport started with athletes trying to push the limits, and these sportsmen and women – in each and every sport - who have achieved success at the top-level deserve our utmost thanks and respect, and must be rewarded for their prodigious performances, not to mention their dedication. It is fair to say no world title is ever won easily, not even for athletes who dominate their discipline as some riders have done recently. No title is won before it is actually won, but the preparation that all champions
undertake is the often the first and most important step of this process. Then for those champions who successfully defend their title, they will always acknowledge that the next title is no easier to win and can often be more difficult and complicated. All our sports have evolved and one very important step has been the wider inclusion and recognition of the women who now participate in a number of disciplines, especially in the off road sector including Trial, Motocross and Rallies but also in Road Racing and World Record Attempts. So we would like to offer a very special welcome to our women riders. Finally without the long and rich history of motorcycle sport, we would not stand as high as we do today, so it with this mind we welcome our heroes from the past who through their achievements over the years are now the legends with whom we can associate so much of this success. Without any doubt, this second edition of the FIM Gala Ceremony, held at this great place, the Casino of Estoril, will be a big success. My sincere greetings go to all the people involved in the organisation of this event, and, above all, to all the FIM World Champions, whose contribution to our sport has considerably helped spread the magic of the motorcycling sport all over the world. 3
Carlos Carreiras Mayor of Cascais Welcome to Cascais, Welcome messages are often used by the host as an opportunity to highlight the unique marvels of his city. I could talk to you about the impressive splendour of the Atlantic Ocean and the golden beauty of our coastline, blessed with 300 days of sunshine a year. I could tell you about the mysteries of our Natural Park and its well-kept treasures. I could mention the charms of our world-class museums and even our sophisticated hotels and tourism activities. But I won’t. Because for many of you, this visit provides an opportunity to meet a highly respectable 647-year-old lady: our Town of Cascais.
Over the years, Cascais and motor cycling fans have cemented an intimate bond of friendship. Both of us share a passion for two wheels. For adrenalin, adventure and the spirit of freedom. It’s no accident that our autodrome in Estoril has consistently hosted the Moto GP since 2000. This year is the 11th edition. And we continue to hope that the next race will be just like the first. I’m sure that you’ll find a unique atmosphere for your Conference and Annual Gala. I’m quite certain that we’ll continue to enthusiastically receive world motor cycling’s finest brands, bikes, pilots and fans - for the best race of the season. Here in Estoril. Once again welcome and make yourselves feel at home: in Cascais.
Instead I’d prefer to talk about something else: how wonderful it is to see old friends back in our Town. 5

Suzi Perry Master of Ceremony Suzi has often been referred to at the First Lady of Biking. A rider herself she became the first female in the world to present motorcycle racing back in 1997. Covering FIM Grand Prix, World Superbike and Speedway, She became the star of Sky Sports, then moved to the BBC where Suzi remained for 11 years bringing her chatty informative style to the nation via BBC2 and their news channels. Over a 15 year broadcasting career she has presented and starred in many UK shows. The Daily Telegraph ran a preview MotoGP column written by Suzi and she is also a regular contributor to Motorcycle News and many other 2 wheeled publications and websites.
Suzi now hosts the popular consumer technology series ‘The Gadget Show’ now in its 17th series! In 2009 Suzi was given an Honorary Fellowship by Wolverhampton University in recognition of her achievements and services to her home town and technology. She is a patron of the children’s charity Promise Dreams and is also closely linked to the UK Youth Charity, Marie Curie and the National Association for Disabled Bikers. Last year she was voted ‘Gadget Personality of the Year’ at the T3 Awards. And she is back and looking forward to hosting the FIM Awards for the second year running.

2011 FIM Road Safety Award Andrés Pérez Rubio This year the award is made to Mr Andrés Pérez Rubio. It recognises his exceptional contribution to the improvement of road safety for riders over many years. Recently he has come to public attention outside his native Spain for his work with the ROSA project. He worked with the European Union and other project partners. These included the Spanish Directorate General of Traffic, the FIM, the research institute CIDAULT and the company DORNA – the FIM’s commercial partner for MotoGP. Selected MotoGP events were used to showcase this work to the public.
37
Andrés
Pérez Rubio The ROSA project concluded with an event held in the European Parliament where the results were presented. Prior to this Andrés Pérez Rubio has campaigned for many years to seek improvements in other aspects of road safety. Most notably in respect of road infrastructure. In this he and colleagues from Spain have been the leading advocates for improvements to roadside barriers. In 2007 he commenced work with the REAL AUTOMOVIL CLUB DE ESPAÑA bringing a new dimension to the work of the RFME. One of the judges for the FIM award, Dr Luciano Iorio, chairperson of the Road Safety Forum of the United Nations ECE in Geneva wrote to the FIM: “Andrés Pérez Rubio is the right prominent example of a sport champion with a strong frame of mind and high resilience. He has transformed a personal setback to achieve valuable solutions in road safety for the motor bikers’ world.” Andrés Pérez Rubio was twice Spanish road racing champion in the 500cc class in 1982 and 1985. In addition to his talents as a rider he was also an innovator in racing technology developing a linked braking system
38
which he used on his Yamaha racing motorcycles. This was before this type of technology became as common as it is today on some road motorcycles. In 1993 he suffered a serious road accident in which he lost both hands when he struck a roadside barrier. Showing exceptional fortitude he assisted with the management of the scene of the accident and subsequently surgeons were able to operate and save his hands. Despite continuing disability he is able still to drive and ride his scooter. His enthusiasm for road safety work continues and in 2011 he has also been appointed to the FIM Public Affairs Commission. The FIM extends its thanks to the judges: Dr Luciano Iorio Chairperson, Road Safety Forum of the United Nations ECE in Geneva; Mr Tim Buche President of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation USA and Mr Antonio Avenoso Executive Director of the European Transport Safety Council.

2011 FIM Environmental Award In order to encourage a greater awareness of environmental concerns within the motorcycling world, the FIM has created fifteen years ago, an Environmental Award to reward a significant contribution to the protection of the environment. This Award is given each year and it is granted for rewarding individuals, National Motorcycle Federations, Continental Unions, clubs, organisers, manufacturers or other organisations that have made a significant contribution or done something important to enhance environmental awareness in the field of motorcycling. Candidatures for the Environmental Award are submitted to the FIM Administration by National Motorcycle Federations, Continental Unions, Specialised Associations or Board of Directors and are examined by an independent Jury. The independent Jury is composed of one FIM Member of the Board, the FIM International Environment Commission Director and three independent experts chosen by the Board of Directors. The Environmental Steward is the principal source of nominations for this important award. In the course of carrying out their responsibilities at FIM events, they should be vigilant in looking for examples of quality
60
activities, innovative management of environmental challenges, and Federations or individuals doing an exemplary job. These nominations should be submitted, along with a description of the occurrence qualifying for the Award, to the FIM Administration with the event check-list. “Understanding is growing among governments, businesses and individuals around the world of the important – but often overlooked – contribution of the environment to our well-being and economic security. The world of sport is no exception. The commitment of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) to caring for the environment is exemplified by its Environmental Code, an essential tool for national affiliates and other organizers of FIM events. Through its initiative, FIM has demonstrated its determination to be part of the solution to environmental sustainability, and not part of the problem. Mr Achim Steiner United Nations Under-Secretary-General Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme

YES, THIS IS THE WAY TO PRACTICE AND AVOID TRACK CLOSING DUE TO NON-COMPLIANCE WITH THE RULES
LOTS OF RIDERS THINK THEY CAN RIDE ANYWHERE OR THAT THEY ONLY NEED TO GET LANDOWNER'S PERMISSION. BUT THAT IS WRONG!! THEY SHOULD ALWAYS ASK LOCAL AUTHORITIES OR MOTORCYCLE CLUBS WHERE RIDERS CAN PRACTICE IN ACCORDANCE WITH LAWS

Who?
Javier
Villegas
Born on 12 August 1983 in Santiago de Chile, Chile Javier Villegas made his first NIGHT of the JUMPs guest appearance at the 2010 FIM FreeStyle Motocross World Championship grand finale in Fortaleza. The Chilean rider made an immediate impression with his extreme style and hardcore flip combos, qualifying easily for the final. This year, he participated in all rounds of the FIM World Championship and scoring podium positions at almost all events. Javier rides with a lot of style!

Rémi
Bizouard
Born on 11 June 1986 in Bergerac, France Rémi is freestyler rider of the new generation. The ease with which he rotates in the air can hardly be explained in any other way. The 25 year old Frenchman started the FreeStyle competition in 2003 and has already won two FIM Freestyle Motocross World Championships! At the 2007 “Night of the Jumps” in Graz, he was the first rider ever to perform a “360” on a 250cc motorcycle. “Ruler Flips”, “Switchblade Flips”, “Cliffhanger Flips”, he does them all!

Assen
FIM Overall Landspeed World Record holder Born on 18 May 1965 in Tauranga, New Zealand
92
2006
As a passionate motorcycle rider, Richard Assen got addicted to landspeed record attempts when he saw some riders running flat out on the salt bed of Lake Gairdner, Australia. That was in 2006. The Burt Munro movie confirmed Richards’ addiction and with his mate, Jason Swan, the two Kiwi’s y started a 5 year project. Naturally, a visit to Bonneville, the holy ground for land speed records, was required.
2011
From then on Richard and his 400 bhp turbo charged Suzuki Hayabusa, have been going faster and faster. Last September, he finally succeeded. Richard is now the fastest man, riding a conventional motorcycle at just over 420.663 km/h!
