English Resources for the new

curriculum

Helping you to apply the new curriculum The overall aim for English in the National Curriculum is to promote high standards of literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the written and spoken word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. Our guide includes key products to help you get to grips with the new National Curriculum and its assessment in your classroom. The range in this guide has been selected to help you interpret the new curriculum for the classroom and to ensure your pupils gain a full understanding of the subject. We asked our curriculum expert Sue Hackman to review our English products in light of the new curriculum. Sue was the Chief Adviser on School Standards to several Secretaries of State at the DfE between 2006-2013. Some of her responsibilities included improvement, pedagogy, catch-up programmes as well as the core subjects. Prior to joining the department she worked as an adviser in a Local Authority, and her teaching experience spans all Key Stages.

Curriculum aims to ensure children... ✓ Read easily, fluently and with good understanding ✓ Develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information

✓ Acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language

✓ Appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage

✓ Write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences

✓ Use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas

✓ Are competent in the arts of speaking and

2. Story Maker’s Chest by Pie Corbett The Story Maker’s Chest is an award-winning, best-selling discovery box for teaching creative writing at KS2 and KS3. Here’s what just a few fans have to say... “The real treasure trove in this chest lies in the teacher’s guide - a cornucopia of tried and trusted ideas that work in any classroom.” Kevin Harcome, TES Review “Children get a lot of pleasure out of having something tactile and something tangible to feel, it’s a sensory experience for them…it gives you unlimited creativity.“ Adrienne Jones, Educational Consultant “There’s a lot to offer in the chest, and particularly the way in which Pie Corbett opens out how the writing process takes place. It really did catch my imagination, and I think if you can capture an adult’s imagination, that’s going to come across with the children that they’re teaching.” Helen Wolstonecraft, Primary Literacy Specialist How does it help you… • It unlocks the potential within all your pupils - harnessing the power of their imaginations, giving it shape in a written form • It offers you step-by-step support from teachers’ favourite creative writing expert - Pie Corbett • It allows for your input - you’ll be delighted how varied each session is, as all the activities and resources can be as open-ended as you like HCL250568 pack £79.95
